WORKERS FALL INTO TAMAKI RIVER: Four construction workers have been taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries after a scaffolding collapse at Panmure Bridge on Tuesday morning. Fire Service northern communication shift manager Scott Osmond said they received the call at 9:50am and arrived to find one person trapped under scaffolding. Six people in total fell into the Tamaki River below and were rescued by fire crews. Times photo Kelly Teed

Scholarship ‘a chance to change my life’ By KELLY TEED

R

eceiving a health scholarship was the final kick one Cockle Bay resident needed to turn his life around. A streak of bad health issues had left Tony Frith hospitalised on multiple occasions and weighed down both physically and mentally. A motorcycle accident, a misdiagnosed broken ankle and a torn calf muscle as well as a series of

lung infections left the primary school teacher struggling to get back to his active lifestyle. Regular lung infections resulted in frequent hospitalisation and courses of antibiotics to no avail. The culprit turned out to be mould in Mr Frith’s air conditioning unit but by then the lack of activity had taken its toll. “I got quite overweight and lacking energy...just really not in a good health state.” When his mother heard about a

scholarship from Total Sport, Mr Frith knew it was exactly what he needed. “When I found out I’d got the scholarship I thought this is a chance to change my life, a chance to get back on track and start meeting some of those goals that I’ve got.” He was selected as one of 15 participants on a $1500 scholarship programme designed to help him get fit for the Partners Life DUAL Scholarship Programme.

The scholarship includes a weekly boot camp, personal trainer, nutrition advice, online support, exercise gear and the entry fee to the Partners Life DUAL event on Rangitoto and Motutapu islands next month. Director Aaron Carter from Total Sport says that the scholarship was designed to help people who really wanted make a total lifestyle change, and get fit and healthy – both mentally and phys➤ Turn to Page 3 ically.

There’s a new mix of power and excitement in the Blues team for tonight’s opening match of the Investec Super Rugby competition against the Rebels in Melbourne. The squad includes Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) senior member Sam Prattley and ex-Saint Kentigern student and PURC junior Matt Duffie.

Steaks high for local butchers A team of butchers from New World Howick is hoping to carve up the competition at New Zealand’s first Meatstock festival this weekend. Last year’s festival in Sydney sold out with more than 10,000 tickets and similar success is expected on this side of the ditch. If the team makes the cut for first place in the butcher wars, they’ll win $1500 worth of cash and prizes.

Females for football Bucklands Beach AFC is kicking off the football season this Saturday with the hope of getting more females involved in the game. Gemma Lewis, AFF Football Development Officer and BBAFC Academy coach, will be running fun sessions to promote the game to girls with skill sessions and 5v5 games. There’s also the chance to play with the best - some of the Football Ferns will also be there running games and training sessions. Boys are also welcome to join the fun with the opportunities of giveaways, spot prizes and the chance to get signatures from the Football Ferns - Saturday 25th February, 10am-1pm; Where: Bucklands Beach AFC.

“Total Sport has a simple mission: to get more people outside and enjoying participating in more events and experiences in the wonderful locations New Zealand has to offer,” he says. Mr Frith certainly falls into that category and takes inspiration from his active family and their outdoor pursuits. “My mum walks marathons and I’ve got a little brother who’s doing Coast to Coast this weekend – I’d love to have a go at the two day course on that,” he said. He has so far dropped around six kilograms which is predominantly from healthy eating and getting more sleep. He says he’s noticed a range of positive changes so far, both mentally and physically and is working towards a goal of possibly completing the Tarawera Trail marathon towards the end of the year. A change of mindset has also been a driving force when it comes to motivation for Mr Frith who lives in Cockle Bay but teaches year 3 at Southern Cross campus in Mangere – now not even

Green go-ahead for Botany-Pak branch By Laura Brookes

T on track: Cockle Bay resident Tony Frith is training for the Partners Life DUAL Scholarship Photo supplied Programme.

Auckland traffic can stress him out. “It’s not really stressful unless you make it that way, there’s no point getting angry at anyone else because what value is it, where’s the positivity in that? “I’m a lot more positive than what I was and I hope that comes through to my family and friends and my kids at school,” he said. “I want to be a difference maker, I want to help these kids [and] show them they have a choice, they have a chance and they can do it. “That’s exactly what this scholarship is - it’s doing it, not making excuses.” For more information, or to register for the event, go to www.thedual.co.nz

he Botany-Pakuranga branch of the Green Party has kicked off to a grand start after the first public meeting was held on February 16. It was attended by around 20 people, including MP Marama Davidson, who discussed how she got involved in Green Party, what motivates her and why she believes Green Party policies and values are important for the future. The event also featured a segment with other 2017 candidates running in this year’s general election, an explanation of how the Green Party works and a Q&A session. Campaigning, fundraising, markets, door knocking and event hosting are top on the list of activities for the Botany-Pakuranga branch in the lead-up to the general election on September 23, said event organiser Julie Zhu. The 24-year-old has been involved with the Green Party for three years, and said when she finally found enough time to dedicate to the establishment of a Botany-Pakuranga branch, she couldn’t wait to get right into it. It’s about bringing more awareness to the community of what the Green Party does, Ms Zhu said. “Botany/Pakuranga has never had a strong Green presence so people don’t have a good understanding of

what we stand for so it’s important for us to be able to reach out and engage with as many people as we can and we rely on our grassroots to do that,” she said. “This is a great time to grow our movement and presence in the area as we see inequality and fear growing all around the world with Trump and Brexit. As the rich get richer, the rest of us start to turn against each other in a bid to survive, when really, we should be challenging the system that we live in where those with the most power

and privilege get to dictate how the world works.” A Botany local, Ms Zhu ran in last year’s local board elections under the Green Party banner, is passionate about the Green Party’s commitment to “socially conscious values” and hopes to stand in this year’s general election as a Green Party candidate for Botany. The next branch meeting is being planned for early March and is open to members and non-members. To find out more, contact Ms Zhu at juliezhuu@gmail.com.

HOWICK VALLEY Moore St, Vincent St, Elliot St, Wellington St, Union Rd

Winter is coming – what’s the right fire for you? Grasslands, the outdoor power equipment specialist and wood fire retailer, believes now is the perfect time to plan for your winter heating. It may still be summer, but the occasional chilly evening has reminded us that winter is coming. June 1 is not that far away. Owners and operators of Grasslands, Steve Anson and Graham Sowden, know their stuff. They have combined knowledge and experience of more than 45 years. “When choosing a wood fire, there are a couple of things to consider to make sure you get the right one for your space. “What type of fire best suits your room? What type of firebox is best?” the said. There are two main types of clean burning fires – convection fires and radiant fires.

Grasslands Howick showroom.

A convection fire has a casing around the firebox which allows the air to flow. As the air passes the firebox, it is heated. This action is known as convection. Convection fires provide a more even heat to the room. The air is warmed from the ceiling down. It operates in a cycle where it heats the air surrounding the ceiling area first and then pushing the warm air down. The convection fire is more suitable for a room or house with a standard ceiling height and where more even

heat distribution is desired. Radiant fires heat quickly and if you sit close to them, you can get warm even if the whole room has not had time to warm up. A radiant fire transfers about two thirds of its heat by radiation and one third by convection. A radiant fire is more suitable for rooms with high ceilings. ow in its third year, the Tamaki River Festival hosted on Saturday by the Howick Local Board at Bramley Reserve, Pakuranga was a great family day out. Buzzing with activity there was plenty of on-stage entertainment and fun activities that involved water walker zorbs, kayaking, sailing and canoeing. Captain Festus McBoyle and his

motley crew of pirates was a fun act; while a bouncy castle, scavenger hunt, fishing games, education on seashore survival as well as Westpac helicopter-flight simulator made sure everyone had something of interest. Some of the children were spotted having a chat about life with Harold the Giraffe, while others kept busy learning about estuary wildlife and gazing at shells dis-

play. Civil Defence tsunami maps, plans and tips for the area were also on display. “The great thing about this event is that as well as celebrating the marine environment that Howick people really treasure, it is a chance to champion local organisations like our volunteer coastguard and fire services,” said Howick Local Board member Garry Boles.

Our petition has garnered more than 6550 signatures and was presented to a full meeting of the Mayor and Councillors this morning (Thursday, February 23). We will be asking for the roll back of the intensified zoning which was introduced along Mellons Bay Rd and Picton St and we will be asking for the establishment of a protected viewshaft from Stockade Hill, which limits the heights of buildings along these roads and a Plan Change to ensure these are enacted. We are still reeling from our unexpected defeat in the High Court. Unfortunately there is no right of appeal either from our High Court Case. That was heard under special powers which excluded the right of appeal for us. In fact, we are still struggling to pay our legal bills so certainly we would not have had the finances to pursue further litigation. We cannot thank our supporters enough for the donations you made and the sacrifice many of you made to contribute to the test case which we hoped would bring us a telling victory.

Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club

HPCC celebrates 150 years O

n April 21, 1867 the newlyformed Howick Cricket Club took to the field against the visiting Onehunga Cricket Club on the Village Square – the ground we now call Howick Domain. Howick Cricket Club was formed at a series of meetings held in Whites Store chaired by Dr Hovell, who was prominent in Howick Village affairs and was elected the cricket club’s first president in November, 1866. The members played two married/singles matches and held practices to prepare for the first official match on Easter Monday. There was great excitement on the day of the match with most of the community coming to watch. The match was followed by a magnificent dinner at Howick Arms prepared by Mrs Brady. As was the custom in Victorian times, there were many toasts drunk and speeches made. The Howick Cricket Club was made up of local people who came from all walks of life. Howick was just a small village and very isolated from Auckland City and as life was so hard, people had begun to move away to the city or Thames Goldfields. Shortly after the first match, Howick Domain became unplayable due to its swampy nature.

LEGEND: Left, Kyle Mills, a former Black Cap and HPCC’s greatest player, becomes a new HPCC Legend on March 2, 2017; middle, an outstanding opportunity to join with Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club and hear one of the all time greats, Sir Ian Botham, on March 5, 2017; right, an extensive history of 150 years of cricket in Howick and Pakuranga to be launched on April 21, 2017. Pictures supplied

The club was offered the use of a field on Every Macleans farm on Bleakhouse Road. This led to a major change in the club’s direction. For the next 20 years, the club drew from the wider East Tamaki district, as Howick Pakuranga was referred to, and became known as Pakuranga Cricket Club, although there was always a Howick club in the background. Pakuranga became well-known as a strong country club that could foot it with city clubs when they met. In 1895 the Howick and Pakuranga clubs joined forces to play in the Franklin Sub Union competition, winning it four times before splitting in 1900 to Howick and Pakuranga.

The Fitzpatrick family were the basis of the Pakuranga club for the late 19th Century. Edward Fitzpatrick was an outstanding cricketer and is regarded as the father of Howick Pakuranga cricket. It was he who initiated the move to play on Pigeon Mountain Domain and he, along with his brothers John and Bill, who organised the club. The clubs stayed separated until 1935 when, once again, they amalgamated to play in the Manukau Sub Association competition. The fact was that players were turning out for both sides since around 1870 because the area could not sustain two full teams. The combined club was known

as Howick Cricket Club and Pakuranga Cricket Club’s name disappeared. After the end of World War II, Howick Cricket Club came out of recess and gradually built up its numbers as the population grew, adding more teams every year. In 1965, the club joined the Auckland Cricket Association, entering the Senior B Grade. It changed its name to Howick Pakuranga in 1968 because the committee believed it should take responsibility for all cricket in the area. Finally in 1976-77, Howick Pakuranga gained premier status and went on to win its first championship in 1981-82. The population of the district exploded during the 1970s and

Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club matched this growth to the extent that by around 1980 it was one of the biggest clubs in New Zealand and has remained so ever since. In 2015-16 the club had nearly 1000 members. This season, Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club members Glenn Phillips, Colin Munro, Colin de Grandhomme and Mitchell McClenaghan have either played for the Black Caps or are in the Black Caps squad, and Cody Andrews, Shawn Hicks, Danru Ferns and Donovan Grobbelaar have played for the Auckland Aces. Howick Pakuranga has come a long way from that day in April 1867 when the first Howick XI took to the field against the might of Onehunga Cricket Club. The club has a lot to celebrate this year and there are plenty of events planned. ■ March 2: Induction of Kyle Mills as the twelth Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club Legend held at Clubrooms ■ March 5: Annual Howick Pakuranga Dinner with Ian Botham as the main speaker at Sacred Heart College ■ April 21: Book launch at HPCC Clubrooms of Jim Allnatt’s THE MIGHTY MAROONS – 150 Years of Howick Pakuranga Cricket.

Kay leaving after 43 years at Pak College By Farida Master

S

he entered the portals of Pakuranga College as a newly married, 21-year-

old. After spending more than four decades at the college, Kay Davies retired last Friday at the age of 65, marking an end of an era. Mrs Davies aka Mrs Thorn has been a “much loved aunty/ grandmother ” to many international students as well as dean of Rimu House to different generations of students. Always dressed impeccably, she stands tall, cutting a striking figure which had some refer to her as the elegant ‘Lady Kay’. Considering her years of dedicated service to the school, it is not surprising that she has been a teacher to some of the current teachers at Pakuranga College. There is a joke doing the rounds that when Social Science teacher Mike Williamson told Mrs Davies that he started school in 1973, the same year that she did, she looked a little puzzled and said “Oh, but I don’t remember you as a teacher.” Only to have Mr Williamson smile saying, “That’s because I was a Year 9 student then!” Having worked with six principals over the last 43 years, Mrs Davies has undoubtedly impacted thousands of lives. It’s not unusual for students

to walk up to her in far corners of the world, be it the US, UK, South East Asia or Australia and introduce themselves. “It’s wonderful when exstudents remember something you said so many years ago that impacted their lives, because as a teacher you are just doing your job,” she says, a day before her retirement. Mrs Davies admits that in all the years she spent at Pakuranga College she never felt a hint of boredom. As a young girl from Hasting she started her career teaching Physical Education. It wasn’t long before that the principal at the time asked her if she would be a sports co-ordinator as well as assistant dean for 7th form. “After six and a half years in that role, I felt I was running a bit empty,” she recollects about a challenge she thoroughly enjoyed. “In 1994 there was a massive change in thinking. I was asked to be on the committee to restructure pastoral care. It was the first time that we looked at a vertical house system which worked very well,” she says of change in the education system. During her long tenure at Pakuranga College, Mrs Davies was a relieving deputy principal thrice. However in 2004, she took a break from school due to family reasons. “During my year off, princi-

pal Bali Haque requested me to bring out the school magazine which I gladly did. I also did a small tutoring group with the students before I returned as dean of Rimu House in 2006,” she says. In 2011 when the current principal Michael Williams realised there was a big surge in international students seeking admission, he asked her to be dean of International Students, a role she cherished. “There has been a huge change in the ethnicity mix and I love the multicultural feel of the college. I admire the international students for leaving their country and coming to a different culture,” she says. Much as she will miss school where she has spent twothirds of her life, she now looks forward to Sunday nights. “I could never relax on a Sunday night, wondering if I was prepared enough with the lesson for Monday at school or if I had finished marking papers,” she smiles. Despite her strict instructions that she wanted a very low key farewell, the staff organised a high tea befitting Mrs Davies. It took her by complete surprise on her last day at school. Principal Williams says, “She is an institution in herself and will be leaving a big hole in the school. She’s a real treasure-trove of information and will be dearly missed.”

New LJ’s restaurant in town W

hile LJ’s is certainly not just your average fish and chips store, their brand new restaurant-style outlet at 500 Ti Rakau Drive takes the brand to a whole new level.

Located in the same block of shops as Kmart, LJ’s Ti Rakau has gone to the next level in their menu, store design and customer experience, with more on offer than ever. Loyal customers can be assured the classic fish and chip combo is still available, and the popular kids combos haven’t gone anywhere either, but there’s a few fantastic additions in store! The revamped, expanded menu includes a choice of grilled options presented in a pan, icecreams and green lipped mussels in a secret sauce. With a proper coffee machine on site, LJ’s Ti Rakau is your destination for your breakfast meetings, coffees and lunch breaks. “We wanted to create a classy yet affordable environment for the whole family,” said restaurant managers Mr and Mrs Naidoo. “In New Zealand, there’s no casual seafood restaurant... [and] the place was too big and the position was too great to just keep it as a fish and chip shop, so we went broad,” said Mrs Naidoo. LJ’s was the perfect launch pad for this phenomenal concept – new to New Zealand with East Aucklanders being the first to enjoy it. “It’s not just a copy and paste – it’s something new.” It’s all about creating an international feel to appeal to the whole community, said Mr Naidoo. The international concept was mostly influenced by ideas taken from South African food outlets, where the LJ’s head chef is origi-

nally from, and along with a few ideas brought back from Malaysia by LJ’s managing director, Ben Frewin, the international concept was created – with a strong focus on including seafood cuisine from different parts of the world. It’s a store to definitely keep your eye on! “We want to create an environment where people can come have a meal of seafood, mum having the grilled salmon and salad, dad having the snapper and chips, and the kids also enjoying a kid’s meal of fish nuggets and chips,” said Mr Frewin.

“We will also look to offer a very limited range of beer and wine to the menu – you always need a beer to wash down a snapper, and glass of sav to wash down grilled salmon!” Mr Frewin knows of two other stores who will be transitioning into the new format sometime in the next month or two, and is excited about the potential to roll it out in other areas of New Zealand. “We are moving from a more traditional fish and chip offering, into a fast-casual seafood offering... [and] there is plenty of scope to roll this format out in

New Zealand. With New Zealand having the fifth largest Exclusive Economic Zone in the world, we are an ‘Ocean Superpower’. “Seafood has traditionally been seen as an expensive meal for eating out on, and what we want to do is celebrate this awesome resource that New Zealand has, and offer it to the New Zealand public for a fair price.” Since the February 9 opening ceremony, Mr and Mrs Naidoo said the restaurant has been brimming with customers checking out the new design, tagging LJ’s Ti Rakau in Facebook posts and trying out new items

on the menu. It’s exciting to see for the restaurant managers, who believe their hard work has paid off, and can’t wait to show more customers around the new place. I

n a volatile world where immigration has become a dangerous word, dragged in the midst of a fiery political debate, it must be hard being the Minister of Immigration. But Michael Woodhouse, Immigration Minister, also Minister of ACC and Minister of Workplace Relation, says “it is the best job in the world”. “Though it is quite complex,” he concedes as an afterthought. Mr Woodhouse was in this patch at the behest of local MP Jami-Lee Ross who the minister refers to as “a bright young spark of the National party”. After a closed door meeting with a group of local immigration agents and advisors at the office of Immigration Advice NZ at Harris Road on Friday, Mr Woodhouse talks to the Times. He says that meeting up with local immigration agents gave him some valuable inputs. “There is nothing like hearing it first-hand from them,” says at the office run by former Times columnist and immigration advisor Saif Shaikh. Talking about the about the

current situation where racism is being (mis)used worldwide to fight terrorism, he says: “In a restless world, New Zealand has been held as an exemplar in terms of a skilled based balanced immigration policy. “It saddens me when xenophobes refer to migrants as “they” and blame them for the housing problem. “Immigration is not the dominant issue when it comes to rising house prices. That is a different issue. Migrants are strong contributors to the economic and cultural growth of the country.” However, there are times when he has to take a tough stand, more so when it comes to the much publicised case of deportation of Indian students. Mr Woodhouse says the media has not told the whole story. “We gave the students ample opportunity to leave voluntarily. Two have already done so. Also, six of the remaining seven have been awarded the qualification they came to NZ to study towards. So they have achieved what they came here for.” Of the total 191 students served the Deportation Liability Notice or Deportation

Orders, 125 have left New Zealand. “Each case has been handled on its own merit. We wanted them to leave voluntarily and not force them so that they can go back to the country with dignity,” he says. He believes the fault lies with fraudulent agents giving a wrong picture to the students. “We are also working on expectation management. I worry that students are being told a story of education being a pathway to residency in the country.” He says he has visited India and that Immigration New Zealand is working closely with partner agencies providing regular advice and information to education industry providers. Mr Woodhouse also mentions that there has been a change in the skilled migrant category. “We have worked on a higher skills visa and have raised the skilled based points from 140 to 160 points. “We are working on a remuneration policy in terms of qualifying for residence. The announcement on skills is about to come,” he says.

he area’s largest sporting club Pakuranga United Rugby is gearing up for a busy year which will include setting up an All Blacks Fan Zone during the Lions midyear tour and welcoming some 600 players for the World Masters Games in April. First off though, the club is preparing for the annual junior registration and weigh-in’s beginning this weekend. Weigh-ins will take place on Saturday (February 25) between 1pm and 4pm and on Sunday from 9am to 12pm. Youngsters will also be able to weigh-in on Wednesday (March 1) from 4pm-8pm and on Saturday (March 4) between 1pm and 4pm. For full details on how to get your child involved in rugby check out the clubs website purc. co.nz. PURC general manager Stephen Hackett said the club placed a great deal of emphasis on junior rugby with the “nursery” grades of Under 5s and 6s being a great way for families to meet new people in the area and get young children into team sport. “It’s non-contact with a focus on having fun and learning to play the game,” he said. “There are post-game activities including a sausage sizzle and drinks for the young ones. It’s great for parents too as there is no travel to matches as they’re all played at the club.” The junior tackling grades are also set to see big change in 2017 with new grades and new rules to play under. “We pride ourselves with the experience we give children entering the sport and this year with safety improvements in the tackling area in place, it’s going to be a fantastic improvement for children learning the game,” Hackett said. Other changes will see the junior grades U9s/U10s now

play in weight categories rather than age categories. “This will allow for greater flexibility in children’s growth at this age,” said Hackett. In the upper junior to intermediate grade levels, another change will see players stay together through the grades in the Saturday competitions. “These children would have been playing together since U5s or 6s in some cases and we want to keep them playing together and each Saturday with their friends where possible,” he said. “The whole aim of junior rugby is to grow players skills and get them ready for college rugby and we pride ourselves at being the best at this under the direction of former All Black Pita Alatini (PURC’s director of rugby).” At the end of the season the club is introducing a two day junior rugby festival. The club will also be sending five teams (U9s-U13s) to a rugby festival in Taupo. Also this year, an U10s/U11s squad of around 40 boys will head to Australia for the annual Beecroft Cherrybrook tour (the Sydney club came to NZ last year). Meanwhile in senior PURC, the club will announce its premiere squad on March 22. Alatini, who is also the pre-

The club is preparing itself too for the World Masters Games running from April 2130 which will see as many as 600 players using the PURC facilities during seven days of rugby. The fields look ready too with the number one pitch sporting lush green rye grass replacing the couch grass which left the ground brown the last few seasons. This will all be set off by the new electronic scoreboard which will be installed this month. Lastly, In June/July the club will brace itself for the much-anticipated Lions tour by setting up an All Blacks Fan Zone. “We know many fans in the area did not get tickets to the Lions test matches so we intend to be here to give our fans a great venue to enjoy all the action like at the 2011 RWC,” said Hackett.

Auckland tackles freedom camping issue

Exclusive doco screenings at Bruce McLaren By Laura Brookes

A

bumper tourism season is increasing tensions between freedom campers and locals in Auckland, prompting new moves by Auckland Council to see if the conflicting needs of freedom campers and local residents can peacefully co-exist. This week, council is beginning a two-month pilot “dispersal” programme that could see freedom camping visitors encouraged to spread out over 29 locations across the city, rather than crowd into a few well-known hot spots. The pilot sites – including four in Howick, Pakuranga and Eastern Beach – have been selected following extensive consultation with local boards, resulting in seven of the 21 Auckland local boards participating. At the outer edges of Auckland, the Franklin and Rodney local boards have approved seven and eight sites respectively. The Howick Local Board has approved sites in Eastern Beach, Lloyd Elsmore Park and two Howick public carparks. In Maungakiekie-Tamaki, sites have been approved at Panmure Lagoon’s Domain Reserve and the Panmure Wharf Reserve. Puketapapa Local Board is offering Margaret Griffen Park for the pilot and AlbertEden Local Board has a site at Western Springs Community House. Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has approved five sites and the Upper Harbour Local Board has approved the use of Rosedale Reserve in Albany for the pilot scheme. “A key aim of the pilot programme is to try and reduce the impact of freedom campers on local access to parks, beaches and amenities,” says Councillor Linda Cooper, chair of the council’s Regulatory Committee. Throughout the trial, council officers will be ensuring the sites are kept well-maintained and tidy, with clear accessways for the public to

traverse and park. “Both park users and campers need to be kept safe, and toilets and other amenities need to be maintained in good operating order,” says Councillor Cooper. “We want to be welcoming hosts to our visitors. Campers bring an estimated $1.2 million a month into our economy over summer. However the influx of freedom campers into hotspot areas - particularly in north eastern coastal and inner city locations - is creating problems. Overcrowding, parking and access difficulties, and increasing rubbish at popular destinations is frustrating local communities and other park users.” Auckland is the gateway for most of the 3.4 million tourists that come to New Zealand and Auckland Council estimates 320 freedom camping vehicles per day are either travelling on its roads or parked in public places over summer. “If we can encourage campers into new areas, we hope to reduce overcrowding and spread the tourism dollar to other local board economies, while also introducing visitors to some of the lesserknown but lovely corners of our city,” she says. The council proposes using a range of regulatory and

non-regulatory approaches to try to move campers around Auckland. “We’ll be making good quality travel planning information more readily available to campers, using social media and printed information about alternative paid and free camping sites,” says Michael Sinclair, Manager Social Policy and Bylaws for Auckland Council. Information about day trips, events and things to do in participating local areas will encourage campers to explore and enjoy their surroundings. “We want to do everything we can to encourage voluntary moving on, including ensuring our suggested alternatives feel safe for visitors, so we have been careful with

location choices and will have security monitoring at sites,” says Mr Sinclair. There will also be increased monitoring of toilets and rubbish bins. “During the pilot we will be vigilant with compliance monitoring. We will retain the ability to deploy a quick response team to any areas not coping with demand, and we will modify the conditions of camping (for example, by reducing the length of stay) or even shut down designated sites if they are causing a nuisance,” he says. A report on the pilot programme will be presented to the council later in 2017 and will help inform the development of policies and regulations on freedom camping in Auckland.

Starting this Monday, the residents at Bruce McLaren retirement complex will be treated to a four-session entertainment roadshow hosted INSPIRED: The late by the Aotea Youth Dr Jim Sprott was the Symphony (AYS) presenter of the eight and Sinfonietta documentaries. Three swimmers make junior squad Three East Auckland youngsters have just earned a place in a coveted national junior swim squad. Sophie Spencer (13 years), from Beachlands, Ella Crowe (11), from Half Moon Bay, and Judd Brown (9), from Howick, won their age group categories at the Legend of the Lake swim in Rotorua on Saturday which was the fourth event in the seven swim New Zealand Ocean

This means they will travel to Auckland with a caregiver for a weekend camp with some top name elite swimmers and coaches in May. Throughout the season, each qualifying event will allow children the opportunity to earn a place in

the 36 member squad. The NZ Ocean Swim Series runs from November 2016 to April 2017. The 2017 Jetstar Super Swim Squad Camp will take place in Auckland on May 6 and 7. quarter in 2015 ($503). Rent for a three bedroom home ranges from an average weekly rent of $419 in Franklin/Manukau to $887 in Central Auckland. One bedroom properties averaged $344 per week (up 5.1 per cent from $327 in the October to December quarter 2015), and two bedrooms $437 (up 5.1 per cent from $416), while 4 bedroom homes brought in $658 (up 3.4 per cent from $636) and 5+ bedroom homes averaged $812 (up 3.2 per cent from $787).

Rents slow to rise

Demand for rental property management up

Average Auckland rent has risen at a relatively reasonable pace despite high demand for rentals, rising property sales prices, and long-term interest rates tipped to go up. Based on the latest data from Barfoot & Thompson Auckland’s largest property management company, Auckland renters paid around 4.4 per cent more on average in the October to December quarter (Q4) of 2016, compared with the same quarter the year before. Average weekly rent across all property types and locations in Auckland was $524, up from $502 in Q4 2015. Average rent rose more in South Auckland (6.3 per cent), and slightly less in Central Auckland, Franklin/Manukau, and Pakuranga/Howick (2.6 per cent, 3.1 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively). “Rents have risen at quite a modest rate given the record

house sales prices we saw last year. Most property owners would prefer a trustworthy longterm tenant, paying rent on time, to asking for higher rent,” says Barfoot & Thompson director Kiri Barfoot. “Landlords obviously consider the return on investment, but are very conscious an empty property doesn’t pay rent. This is why we don’t tend to see tenants being hit with large rent increases even when house prices or interest rates rise.” Regular rent review is an

important part of professional property management service. “Rent is determined by property location, size, and number of bedrooms, as well as taking into desirable features such as internal garaging and sunny outdoor spaces,” says Ms Barfoot.

One bedroom averages over $300 anywhere in Auckland “In the past year, the largest rent increases in terms of property size were for one and two bedroom homes. For the first

time the average rent for a one bedroom property in all areas of Auckland passed $300, ranging from $302 in Manukau/Franklin to $373 in Central Auckland. “However, three bedroom homes are the most common rental and the best reflection of what the overall market is doing,” says Ms Barfoot. The average weekly rent for a three bedroom home in Auckland during the October to December quarter was $525, rising less than 1 per cent on last quarter ($520) and 4.4 per cent on the same

Property owners are turning to professional property managers in droves to mind their most valuable assets. Barfoot & Thompson was managing nine percent more rental properties at the end of the 2016 than in 2015. Based on data from October to December 2016, Barfoot was managing between 12 and 16 percent more properties in Franklin, Rodney, Central Auckland, and South Auckland, than in the same quarter the year before. “Typically we sign on around 450 new properties every month. There are two clear trends, the first is a desire for professional management in areas further north and south as rental demand increases beyond the traditional city limits; the second is owners coming to us as developments are being completed in the central city,” says Ms Barfoot.

Spare a few hours to help Kiwi kids with cancer Child Cancer Foundation is calling for volunteers nationwide to lend a hand for its annual street collection, taking place on Friday and Saturday March 17 and 18, during Child Cancer Foundation Appeal Month. Dedicated volunteers are urgently needed to donate their time and help raise vital funds to support more than 500 families’ nationwide in hospital, at home and in the community. Robyn Kiddle, chief executive at Child Cancer Foundation said more than three children in New Zealand are diagnosed with cancer every week. “Child Cancer Foundation receives no direct funding from the government, and we rely heavily on the generosity of New Zealanders to continue to support these children and their families in need,” she said. “We are grateful to anyone who can spare a couple of hours to raise funds to help brave Kiwi kids and their families, facing their cancer battle. “There are collection sites nationwide – including sites in Howick and Botany- and

Regular price a diversion

Re ‘Petrol: 22c difference’, Times, February 2. Any inquiry should also question the price difference between regular 91 fuel and super (96/97/98 octane). In the Bay of Plenty the difference is typically 25+ cents. With more vehicles now requiring the super grades, the cost of regular fuel is just a diversion. Price cutting does not seem to apply to the super grades. North American cost difference is typically 8 cents per litre. Steve Boyle

A journalist recently wrote that John Key’s strength and also his weakness was running New Zealand as a business and I can understand that. There are two fundamental flaws in every business model. Firstly, one in four businesses fail and in most large companies (with domestic debt running at half a trillion dollars and the government’s own personal debt at sixty billion), such a situation would be considered a failure. Secondly, one definition of business states that commerce and profit must override personal feelings and it is quite clear many New Zealanders have become pawns from which the maximum financial return can be made. The most tangible evidence of that is the never-before-seen

numbers of Aucklanders being forced to rent or, because of the imposed financial pressures, move out of Auckland altogether. They are being replaced by wealthier new immigrants, some who quickly buy up five or a whole lot more houses for renting and the whole escalation of prices and housing shortages just continue to spiral skyward. would be to build minimumsized apartment blocks with parking underneath. The question is, would the public and environmentalists accept that knowing the present mood of the general public and the ambulance-at-the-bottom-of-the-cliff mentality of both the council and our government, I very much doubt it. Gary Hollis Mellons Bay

Parking getting worse

Residents of Golflands need to be aware of the imminent vandalism of a number of local streets by Auckland Council, with the scheduled, and apparently unnecessary resurfacing of Golfland Drive, Faldo Drive, and one or two other minor streets in the area. Our superb hotmix tarmac surfaces, which have lasted for up to fifteen years, are to be covered in the dreaded chipseal, creating everlasting problems with loose gravel and tar on our driveways, and in our homes, and with chipped cars. Chip-seal also creates extra road noise, both inside and outside vehicles, and deteriorates rapidly. Why, oh why does the Council continue to downgrade our streets in this way? No doubt Council will brush off my question with the usual flannel when confronted with this topic. Graham Pilgrim, Golflands

I predict the council’s lack of vision will become apparent as the intensive housing gets underway. Many, many streets in the suburbs are fully parked right now. Once the three storey houses are occupied, the additional cars are added, streets simply won’t cope. The Pakuranga Highway, for example, offers very little parking. Perhaps a councillor could explain. One example placed on the web is a sign of things to come. This unfortunate had acquired a new neighbour who promptly parked his car in front of his only parking spot. His only option was to park five houses down, and that was on a roundabout. Such chaos is only the tip of the iceberg that will ensue from the more intensive housing. There is a solution and that

Olympians at Weet-Bix Kids’ TRYathlon Hundreds of Auckland children from 34 schools got up-close and personal with some of New Zealand’s top athletes at the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon on February 12. Participants from local schools like Mellons Bay School, Wakaaranga Primary School, Sunnyhills Primary School swam, cycled and ran to the finish line to receive a medal from Olympians Sarah Cowley Ross, Anita Punt, Nikki Hamblin, 2016 Olympic games bronze medalist Eliza McCartney along with All Blacks Reiko Ioane and Ofa Tu’ungafasi. Held at the Pt England Reserve, this year’s series marked the 25th anniversary of the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon, and had around 2800 students participate.

he annual RSA Welfare Charity Tournament, run by the Howick RSA Golf Section, has raised $5000 which will be donated to the Howick RSA Welfare Trust. Howick Golf Club’s Susi Brumback said it is the second largest amount raised to date. This tournament has been held for the past thirty five years and last year raised $6800. “The Welfare services that the Howick RSA provide are many — transportation to hospital/ medical visits, help with hearing aids, glasses and various medical accounts and education scholarships to name but a few,” said Brumback. “Our charity golf day generates funds from sponsors, the players and the RSA and sponsors donate cash and /or prizes that the RSA would otherwise have to pay for from tournament entry fees

paid.” “The Pakuranga Golf Club donates the course at a reduced green fee. “So a proportion of the entry fee paid by the players adds to the cheque that goes to the Howick RSA Welfare Trust,” she said. “In addition we have raffles with prizes that are donated from sponsors for the quick fire raffles in the club house after the day’s golf.”

Bring on the Petal Heads, Rastafairies H

owick Children’s and Youth Theatre has a lineup of two fabulous new productions taking place next week – Patch and Badjelly the Witch. The outdoor performance of Patch will be the world premiere of the production, written by local Howick musician and author Kay Shacklock, who has also written a book based on the play. It is a prequel to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which rival fairy gangs the Rastafairies and the Petal Heads get up to midnight mischief in the forest. Patch director Kelly Scott says the production will be suitable for young and old alike. The well-known story of Badjelly the Witch will also be performed by staff of the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre over the same weekend. Badjelly tells the story of two

Ladies, hammers and workshop humour Grab your gal pals and make sure you get yourself along to the Howick Little Theatre for The Pink Hammer directed by Patricia Wichman. The upcoming Kiwi comedy is based on the lives of four very different women who each answer a flyer for The Pink Hammer Workshop, which is a ladies-only woodwork class. Expecting empowerment and sisterhood, they turn up and instead find that the tutor Maggie, who was advertised on the promo flyer, has gone a little AWOL! Taking her place is husband Woody, who isn’t a fan of hosting a bunch of crazy women in his workshop, but as it turns out, he may not have

a choice in the matter. It’s a production guaranteed to give viewers a laugh or two, as well as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life. Ms Wichman has been directing since 2011 and this will be her first show performed at the Howick Little Theatre. She received first place in Acting at the National round of the World Championship of Performing Arts in 2010, and secured a place representing New Zealand in the International round held in Los Angeles. The production runs from February 25 to March 18 with both evening and matinee sessions available. Visit http://www.hlt.org.nz/ for more details.

CX-9 is practically fun By Alistair Davidson

T

here comes a time in life when candlelit dinners make way for drivethrough burgers, and instead of a romantic DVD and a bottle of wine when you get home it’s a Barney the purple dinosaur video with the kids. The contents of the garage change too. That sporty MX-5 convertible is history in its place sits that universal symbol for middle age and responsibility: a MPV, or in modern lingo, a seven-seat SUV. “You know what honey? Let’s go for a fun spin along a twisty coast road in the people mover,” said nobody ever. Well, newsflash people: practical doesn’t have to be boring. Don’t believe me? Well, go take the latest, allnew Mazda CX-9 for a test drive and you’ll soon see what I mean.

CX-9 handles beautifully, and the electric power steering is light but has a good level of feel. The GSX model is offered with either two-or fourwheel drive ($52,995 and $55,495 respectively), while the $62,995 Limited tested here is all wheel drive only. The previous model had a V6 under the hood whereas this one, which utilises Mazda’s SkyActiv technology, has a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. It’s a new engine, and one that’ll find its way into other models; think performance orientated Mazda3 and Mazda6. In CX-9, the turbo four is set up for real world driving, so rather than having heaps of power high up in the rev range it delivers a useful 420Nm of torque at 2000rpm. This means excellent throttle response and quick overtaking (particularly with

the six-speed auto in Sport mode), or relaxed effortless cruising. CX-9 isn’t boring to look at, either. Somehow Mazda has managed to make sensible look exciting in a classy and understated way. Sure, that big trademark Mazda grille is in your face, but that’s an exception; the rest of the styling is a case study in ‘less is more’. Same goes for the interior. Fit and finish is superb, and the choice of materials is what you’d expect from a high-end European sedan, not a seven-seat crossover. The middle row of leather clad seats is roomy enough for three adults, whereas as the third row is the kids’ domain. There are multiple ways to fold and slide the back two rows, so if mum and dad want to escape for a weekend there’s enough room to take those neglected mountain bikes off the garage wall

and stash them in the CX-9’s load area. The Limited’s specification is impressive. Radar cruise control with stop and go function, Smart Brake Support (SBS), lane departure warning and Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS), Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW) and a heads-up windscreen display add safety to practicability. A sunroof, tinted windows and a power tailgate are also standard fare. It’s quiet too, thanks to additional sound deadening and a thicker floor pan compared to the old CX-9. A lack of mechanical and road noise means that you’ll have to crank up the Limited’s awesome premium 294watt, 12-speaker sound system to drown out the kids asking ‘are we there yet?’ Little do they know, the CX-9 is so enjoyable to drive and comfortable that you’re taking the long way home.

from left to right: All-wheel drive CX-9 Limited rolls on 20” alloy wheels; the 8? colour touchscreen display can also be managed by a BMW-style rotary controller; the interior is like origami, with the seats folding every which way depending on the passenger to luggage ratio; developed primarily for the American market, CX-9 is big; it’s 1969mm wide and rides on a 2930mm wheelbase. Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 16, 23, 2017 — 27

Is this the Warriors’ year? D

ynamic teenager Isaiah Papalii is one of several good reasons why the Warriors should improve dramatically on past disappointments. At 18, the young second rower has the size, power and pace to give the Warriors pack that extra punch so necessary to mix it with the big boys of the NRL. A power lifter, Papalii showed in Sunday’s Palmerston North pre-season 26-6 win against the Gold Coast Titans that he has a nose for tries. Others to shine were new captain Roger TuivasaSheck, scrum half Shaun Johnson, prop Albert Vete and veteran loose forward Simon Mannering. Tuivasa-Sheck set up three of the Warriors five tries with well-timed passes, was brave and assured in defusing the Titan’s bombs and fast and elusive on attack Johnson made one glorious sidestepping run but, apart from that, it was the sting he put into his tackles

TIMES FISHING GUIDE:

Agnew’s Angle that impressed most. Vete’s powerful charges regularly committed three Titan tacklers to stop him and Mannering combined his rock solid defence with some good offloads. As new coach Stephen Kearney confessed, it wasn’t a perfect performance. But it was a big improvement on their previous 30-18 loss to Melbourne although the Titans were without stars Jarryd Hayne, Kevin Proctor and Konrad Hurrell. However there are some promising signs, with Isaac Luke looking much fitter than he was last year and young Ata Hingano looking capable of filling the fiveeighth berth until Kieran Foran returns. Hopefully too much won’t be expected of Foran following the mental problems he has suffered over the past

year. But should he recover to be the player he was, he will be a huge asset to a backline that needs his direction. While Solomone Kata and David Fusitu’a are big, fast centres capable of breaking defences open, both need to improve their passing skills. In Manu Vatuvei, Tui Lolohea and Ken Maumolo, the Warriors are not short of finishing power on the wings. While hope is said to spring eternal, that of devout Warriors fans has been seriously tested over too many seasons when it turned to hopelessness. However this year I have a hunch the tide will turn, with the team giving loyal fans something to cheer about. Having watched the Black Caps humiliated by the brilliant South Africans in the Eden Park T20, cricket supporters would have been heartened by the huge improvement in Sunday’s first ODI in Hamilton when AB de Villiers’ four secured a

win for the tourists with one ball to spare. Whereas it was spin wizard Imran Tahir with five wickets from 15 balls who reigned in Auckland, it was pace bowler Chris Morris who did the damage with four wickets before Colin de Grandhomme and Tim Southee’s 51-run strand from 23 balls gave South Africa a decent chase at 207 for seven. At 117 for one, South Africa looked set to romp in before losing four wickets from 14 balls. Southee and Boult were superb. However it was the turn extracted by spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner that provided valuable backup in all but putting the Proteas to the sword. While South Africa remain favourites to win the five-game series, more of the same fight from the Black Caps will do much to enhance their reputation. Gillion shines at Futsal AFF Futsal representative Emily Gillion is one of a number of players who have seen the Women’s Futsal pathway come to fruition. The 16-year old Macleans College student took up the five-aside game less than a year ago, and already finds herself coming up against the best female talent the country has to offer. Gillion has earned selection into the Nic Downes-coached Auckland National Women’s Futsal League side and AFF Futsal Development Officer Marvin Eakins says the selection has come off the back of strong performances in the Auckland Women’s Futsal League.

ameron Brown, honoured in the New Year’s Honours List, will look to further his world records after being awarded number one seeding for the 33rd Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand in Taupo next month. Brown, 44, from Dannemora, is chasing his 13th victory in Taupo and a win will extend his global record for the most wins of the same Ironman event and the oldest male to win an Ironman. He will take on a powerpacked line-up on Saturday March 4, with the professional men’s field announced this week. Meanwhile top seed in the women’s race is American Meredith Kessler, who will chase a sixth straight victory in Taupo to equal the six wins in a row by New Zealander Joanna Lawn. The 2014 Ironman New Zealand champion, Marko Albert from Estonia, returns as the second seed ahead of Kiwi star Terenzo Bozzone, the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, who achieved his

his Ironman debut just a few weeks after finishing runnerup in the Coast to Coast multisport event, which he has won three times. Ironically, he will come up against the Coast to Coast winner Sam Clark who returns to join 25 male professionals confirmed for the race. Kessler has 11 Ironman wins to her credit after another outstanding year in 2012, as she returns to her regular starting race in Taupo, which has become second home for her and her husband. Second seed is Australian Carrie Lester, who enjoyed a top-10 finish at the Ironman World Championship, after wins at Chattanooga and Cairns. Colourful Netherlands triathlete Yvonne van Vlerken is seeded third on the back of seven Ironman victories and nine podiums including runner-up in Hawaii in 2008. There are 1200 entries from 49 countries entered, with the professionals chasing a $115,000 prize purse.
