OR the first time in years, there’s been an increase in the school role of Howick Intermediate. Yolande Franke has been an extraordinary catalyst of change since she took over as principal on October 13 last year. Changing the school uniforms was one of the easier tasks she took on in the first few weeks of her appointment as principal. Opening up the communication channels was the next step. When the school’s old website burnt and crashed, she introduced a user-friendly website. While Ms Franke was expected to turn the school around, she knew the change had to be a sustainable one. It had to be accompanied by proper infrastructure and systems in place. Even as she set about creating a modern learning environment, coupled with new leadership roles, she’s been sensitive to the staff’s beliefs and value system. “Change can be threatening to people as it questions their core beliefs that they’ve held for so long. It’s important to share the strategic vision and get everyone excited about it, she says. Apart from getting the community on board and asking them about the expectations of the school, Ms Franke had a one-on-one with every staff member and teacher to first understand their hopes and aspirations, and where they were coming from. “Relationships are very important and we need to build on them. “While there are a lot of fresh ideas we can introduce, everyone including the staff, teachers, parents and the community need to understand the end goals and stay connected to it. From a school that had no access to WiFi to 135 students bringing their devices to school, the learning trajectory has changed. Sitting in a temporary make-shift office which was formerly a dance studio, Ms Franke says the school is

in the midst of major renovations. “Twenty classrooms are not fit for occupation and will be taken off site. Some other buildings are going to be upgraded, she says. The Ministry of Education is backing her vision all the way. “There’s been a lot of strategy aligning and showing people what direction we are heading for. What excites me is building leadership

capacity. It’s gratifying to see a lot of initiative conversations now coming from our new leaders. “There is an amazing synergy as we have the right people in the right place, taking ownership for it. To carve a new identity of a high performing school, Ms Franke has been systematically developing links with educational networks and introducing a new work culture.

She’s partnering with colleges to create science learning pathways. Howick Intermediate has also joined hands with other schools to participate in music festivals. Another fresh initiative involves students and teachers learning the Mandarin language. “The opportunities that Asia holds in terms of career pathways are huge. Our children will conduct business

with Asia and we need to equip them to understand their customs, protocol and language. While the response to change has been overwhelming, the cycle of improvement will be ongoing, she says. “A growth mindset involves critical reflection. It’s being mindful of changing practices to ensure our students are successful.

Looking to find perfect soulmate By MARIANNE KELLY

A

SEARCH for the ‘perfect woman’ is set to send theatregoers into stitches. The Love List, by Canadian author Norm Foster, is Howick Little Theatre’s (HLT) first production of 2015 and its director Vic Leilua says it makes for a lot of laughter. But there’s also a message in there if people choose to read into it. “It’s a wonderfully written comedy, full of witty lines and comic moments, he says. As facility coordinator at Auckland Council’s Nathan Homestead community arts centre in Manurewa, Mr Leilua has directed many children’s plays. He became involved with Howick Little Theatre in 2012, working on lighting design and technical operations. The Love List is his first major production as a director, with skills honed from an introduction to directing course under the watchful eye of experienced HLT director Terry Hooper. The play revolves around Leon, a mediocre novelist, and his best mate Bill, a statistician, who make a list of the 10 most

desirable characteristics for Bill’s ideal woman. But when the allegedly “perfect woman turns up at Bill’s apartment, the men quickly realise their list could use a few revisions, resulting in hilarious results. “I like comedy, Mr Leilua says. “The Love List is light, conversational and physical comedy, almost leading to farce situations in parts. “The physical action intensifies the humour and the audience will be kept on their toes. The allegiance of each character is not as straight forward as when it starts out. “There are a lot of twists which keep the audience wondering and on the edge. The narrative revolves around just three characters, Simon Shreeve playing Bill, Brian Keegan as Leon and Katherine Mewett playing ‘the perfect woman’ Justine. One of the best things, Mr Leilua says, is watching the actors develop the variety and conflicts that run through the script. “When they are somewhat over a theme, they come up with something fresh, he says.

BEST OF PLANS: A plot goes awry for these two, Brian Keegan, left, playing Leon, and Simon Shreeve playing Bill when Justine, played by Katherine Mewett, rear, arrives on the scene. Photo supplied

“That’s the magic; a collaboration and watching creativity happening. “You get to a way you thought the play would work, then in rehearsal it changes. “You must be open to a theme. It makes for a more interesting play, he says. “When that happens, the actors need the freedom to try something different. “It might be in delivering some of the lines, humour we had not

thought was there. “That’s what I like about this script; there are different ways to interpret it. Mr Leilua says there is a lot to think about in Norm Foster’s work and it’s up to the audience. “A message is there if you choose to read into it. The Love List, a ticketed event, plays at Howick Little Theatre, Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga, at 8pm from February 28-March 21, and at 2pm on March 1 and 8.

Calling environmental leaders

Campbell says: “We’re looking for students with a passion for adventure and the environment who want to develop their leadership skills. “It’s a hands-on five days where they’ll engage with Kiwi leaders from all walks of life and help answer some of the tough questions facing our country and environment. Applications close on Monday, March 2. Optimistic pupil mourned By Chris Harrowell

A

POPULAR former East Auckland school pupil who lost her life in a tragic road crash last week is remembered as a girl who lived life to the full. Natasha Strydom featured in the Times in 2008 as a talented 13-year-old. The then pupil of Elim Christian College in Botany was named top junior horse-handler at the National Arabian Championships in Christchurch. She and her best friend, both aged 20, lost their lives in a tragic road crash last Tuesday on State Highway 25 between Auckland and the Coromandel. Sergeant Dave Reid, of the Waikato Police district command centre, says emergency services were called to the scene at about 7.45am. “A head-on collision has occurred between a Thamesbound Mazda Demio car and a Volkswagen Passat vehicle heading north away from Thames.” Ms Strydom and her best friend Jani von Wielligh were travelling in the Mazda Demio car. The female driver of the Volkswagen vehicle was flown by helicopter to hospital for medical treatment. Ms Strydom was living in Waiuku at the time of her death. She was studying toward a science degree at Massey University in Palmerston North. Elim Christian College principal Murray Burton says he remembers his outgoing former pupil as a “beautiful and bubbly kid” who “lived life to the full”. “Natasha’s family was very involved in our school when she was a student here and made a huge contribution,” he told the Times. “She had an optimistic character and was the sort of pupil every school would like to have. “Natasha went from strength to strength, was following her

horse, named Farli, to ensure they were both in competition form. The youngster was excited about beating seven other competitors to become top junior horse-handler. “I prayed for a first [placing],” she said. “I have been training really hard and I’m really proud of myself.” Despite having been bitten, kicked, stood on and fallen from a horse, she dreamed of studying to become an equine vet once she left secondary school. The young Ms Strydom said she had to balance her love of horses with her school work. “I have to finish all my homework and my chores before I can go and ride.”

dreams, and was a wonderful girl who loved life.” Mr Burton says Ms Strydom’s passing will leave a large hole in both her immediate and extended family. “Like many of our school’s families she came here from South Africa,” he says. “Her loss will be so much more keenly felt in that the distance will be excruciating.

“Their comfort will come from drawing on each other’s strength, but it’s just devastating to lose one of your beautiful daughters. “It’s difficult for the rest of us to imagine what that’s like.” Former Times news reporter Amanda King spoke to Ms Strydom in 2008. She described her as a confident teenager who spent up to two hours daily training her Arabian

THE annual Rotary Charity Yacht Regatta will mark a significant milestone when it takes place on March 13. The event, which is run by the rotary clubs of Howick and Half Moon Bay and based at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, started in 1986 and turns 30 this year. In that time, it has raised more than $1.5 million for various charities. Individuals or companies pay to be aboard one of up to 30 yachts, which can accommodate between six to 12 people. The 10-15 metre craft are manned by a skipper and crew, though the guests are encouraged to take part in the sailing. “[The skippers] are more than keen to get people involved as much as they want to be,” says Half Moon Bay Rotarian Simon Woodward. “There are people who are happy to sit back, watch the action and take it all in. “The racing itself is very laid back. Some people want to get serious about it and they are more than welcome to. “It’s a great day out on the water for team building.” The day starts at around 10am with a cooked breakfast and meet and greet, before a safety briefing. The regatta starts at 12.30pm on a course starting at West Tamaki Head and cruising past Rangitoto, Motutapu, Motuihe and Browns islands. “The overall objective is to give a lot of non-sailors an opportunity to get out and experience it,” says Mr Woodward. “The important thing is to have a good time on the water.” After disembarking around 4pm, there is a buffet dinner, prize giving and charity auction at the yacht club. This year’s charities are Kidz First Children’s Hospital and the Child Cancer Foundation. There are still spots up for grabs, with details on how to enter the event at yachtregatta.org.nz. “The more entries, the merrier and the more the regatta can raise for its charities,” says Mr Woodward.

Stage career within sight By Chris Harrowell

A

BUBBLY personality combined with fierce determination helps to explain why Chelsea Sloan is so successful at such a young age. The 18-year-old former Botany Downs Secondary College (BDSC) pupil is the youngest student accepted into this year’s The Actors’ Program. The intensive one-year course is based in Central Auckland and is normally only open to actors and actresses aged 20 and over. Its tutors include well-known names such as Sara Wiseman, Michael Hurst and Jennifer Ward-Lealand, among others. Miss Sloan, who lives in Burswood, learned she had made it into the program on her 18th birthday last month. “I didn’t really want to study acting initially as I was kind of put off by the overtraining a lot of people get, she told the Times. “Then I spoke to [actor and producer] Peter Feeney and he said I should audition for The Actors’ Program. “I was the youngest person there and I didn’t know anyone who is famous. “The others all had friends in the industry, but I was just a girl from Botany. Miss Sloan has been acting since age four and took classes at the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre. She’s acted in numerous school stage productions over the years. Her future plans include moving overseas next year to pursue a professional career in the industry in Australia, United States or Canada. “Acting in a way is a weird occupation, but it’s such a great feeling

to put yourself in other people’s shoes, she says. “You’re able to feel what they feel, so you empathise with what

they’re going through. “I love theatre, but think I would prefer to go into film and television. The industry in New

Zealand is so small, so you have to do all of it. Classes Miss Sloan is taking as part of The Actors’ Program include voice training, singing, fitness, dance, and improvisation. “We also have guest speakers, such as Simon Bennett, the producer of Shortland Street. One of the toughest aspects of the course is learning how to channel the ability to cry on stage when required. “You have to put yourself into this really bad place [emotionally], she says. “There was a lot of screaming and anger, and I think we had some noise complaints. All 16 of us were doing it at the same time. Despite that, it’s exactly what she wants to do for a living. “It’s very emotionally draining, but it’s an awesome feeling, says Miss Sloan. “You feel so satisfied at the end of the day and like you’re in touch with all of the emotions in your body. “I love feeling alive. BDSC head of drama Jacqueline Hood says she’s excited to see her talented former pupil follow her “passion for performance. “As Chelsea’s teacher I’m very proud of her for achieving a place on the course and I’m sure it will lead to great things in the future, she says. “She’s a talented young woman who’s focused on learning as much as she can to enable her to become a versatile actress and to give herself the best start in her chosen career. ■■Anna Baird, an accomplished Howick Little Theatre actor and formerly in charge of the HLT box office, has also been selected for The Actors’ Program.

Protecting young eyes With increased awareness about keeping sun-safe, many schools include a brimmed hat as part of the uniform. Fortunately, some schools are now encouraging the wear of sunglasses – as they are beginning to realise the importance of protecting young eyes from the sun. Kristine, owner-optometrist at Eyes of Howick, explains: “Like our skin, it is thought that 80% of ultraviolet damage to our eyes occurs before the age of 20 as young people spend so much time outdoors. While it is true that a wide brimmed hat will shield the eyes from some of the harmful UV rays, the only way to keep eyes completely protected is to wear well fitting, wrapped sunglasses which are certified to block 100% ultraviolet light. This should apply year round, as UV exposure occurs even during winter. For the past several years Eyes of Howick have run their free sunglasses for new entrants starting school campaign. “We are delighted to be able to offer this again and encouraged by the number of local schools supporting this initiative, says Kristine. Kristine personally delivered hundreds of free sunglass vouchers to participating schools but says that if any additional schools wish to take part it is not too late. “This is a year-long initiative as children start school through the entire year and we wouldn’t like kids to miss out. So if any additional vouchers are required, or other local schools wish to take part, they just need to contact us by the end of this month.

Included with the sunglass voucher is a gift voucher which may be used by any member of the family at Eyes of Howick. This can be used towards an eye exam or purchase of frames, lenses or sunglasses. As Kristine herself has a young family, she is passionate about eye care for children. “Most of a child’s learning is done through their eyes so there is a clear link with how well a child can see and how well they may develop either academically, socially or athletically. “As an Optometrist, I understand that children with uncorrected vision conditions or eye health problems face many barriers in life. “High quality eye care can break down

Cyber device update time THE start of a new year is a good time to update your cyber security including changing passwords for all your internetconnected devices says Communications Minister Amy Adams. February 10 was Safer Internet Day which aims to remind people of the potential dangers that can be found online. “The internet is now part of our everyday lives and while this brings great benefits to New Zealanders, we must be aware that it can and does contain some risk, Ms Adams says. “To avoid becoming victims of internet fraud and scams, or exposed to harmful and objectionable material online, we need to be smarter about protecting ourselves online. “Safer Internet Day reminds us that we should be proactive in improving our personal digital security. Don’t wait until it’s too late. “Secure all of your internet-connected devices, including your smart phones. Protecting yourself also helps to protect all your friends, family and colleagues. Ms Adams says the Government recognises the huge benefits of being digitally connected and is therefore committed to helping New Zealanders feel safe online. “We know that one reason people might choose not to become engaged with digital technology is a lack of confidence. Our cyber awareness initiative Connect Smart is helping people learn about how to protect their security and privacy online, so they become more active and confident online citizens. In line with the new school year, Ms Adams said Safer Internet Day was also a reminder for parents to discuss the harmful potential effects of cyberbullying with their children. “Digital awareness should start early. In this technological age of Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, it’s important we ensure children and young people have the skills to operate safely and responsibly online from the moment they are given access to social media. ADVERTORIAL 127527

these barriers and help enable your children to reach their highest potential. For this reason it is never too early to have your children’s vision and eyes assessed. In fact the New Zealand Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their eyes examined: s AT TO MONTHS OLD s AT TO YEARS OF AGE s BEFORE STARTING SCHOOL s THROUGH THEIR SCHOOL YEARS AS INDICATED by vision screening, school performance or the optometrist. It is particularly important for children to be tested at a young age if either parent required glasses as a child or teenager. At Eyes of Howick an eye exam is tailored to your child and their age and most kids really enjoy it! In fact, parents often comment to the team how surprised they are at how well their child managed all the different vision checks. If you have any queries regarding your children’s vision, or to book an appointment, don’t hesitate to contact Eyes of Howick and make sure your child has the best possible tools to learn successfully. N Kristine Jensen, your local Optometrist.

N Shelly Park School new entrants are proud to wear their new sunglasses.

Quality work counts Custom car enthusiasts are spending good money on their modiďŹ ed vehicles at the moment, which is where Richard Howe’s upholstery skills come in. “At the moment people are spending really good money on their cars,â€? he says. “Some of these cars are worth $100,000 to $200,000. “They are one-offs and when you think about the 1930s cars, there are not many left.â€? canvas work. While fewer new boats are being built in New Zealand, Richard says demand for quality upholstery, including squabs and new covers, is steady. “Boats, like the custom cars, are a luxury item, he says, “and a lot of people will spend money on them because the boat is the family toy and somewhere they spend a lot of time. With boats worth $200,000 to $1 million, demand for quality leather work is high, he says. “Most want quality, not budget work.

Technology meets tradition Our quaint village is getting excited about its very own app. Let’s face it, everyone has those phones attached to them 24/7 and Howick is leading the way as a village full of independent businesses coming to grips with its very own app. More than 200 businesses are putting Howick in your hand, offering convenient access to information about your favourite café, events at community centres and the latest special deals. The Howick Village smart phone device app was developed a couple of years ago when the Howick Village Business Association recognized the future was in easy mobile information shoppers could access on the go. Obtaining the app is simple by either scanning the QR code or visiting Google Play App Store to download. Best of all, the Howick Village app is FREE. The app raises the profile of Howick Village as a destination and keeps customers informed, helping those

PlaceMakers Pakuranga Monster Tool Trade Breakfast – Friday, February 27

ADVERTORIAL 127975

I

F POWER or hand tools are essential for your trade or leisure time and you love a big, hearty barbecued breakfast, you just have to be at PlaceMakers Pakuranga from 7am-9am on Friday, February 27 for the store’s annual Monster Tool Trade Breakfast. Branch Operator for PlaceMakers Pakuranga, Rowan Toms says the breakfast has been an annual treat with about 250 people turning up, but this year the team have gone all out to make it even bigger and better. “We expect it to be a great success this year with the free barbecue, along with heaps of prizes and giveaways,” says Rowan. “And, of course, there’s the practical advice on offer from the store’s leading power and hand tool suppliers. They all know the drill and will be showcasing their latest and greatest products, while offering special deals on the day. So, customers can also do some bargaining with these experts in the trade.” The special Monster Trade Tool Breakfast is a prelude to the month of March, which features the Monster Tool Sale with huge reductions on toiols throughout the whole month. And everyone who spends more than $100 (including GST) on power tools between March 1-31, 2015, at PlaceMakers goes into the draw to win a trip for two to the Monster Jam in San Antonio, Texas, USA. PlaceMakers Pakuranga is also using the Monster Breakfast to showcase its smart, new, upgraded tool section in the showroom. The new layout, plus help from friendly staff, makes shopping for tools straightforward and a real pleasure in the revamped department. But, Friday, February 27 won’t just be about a delicious FREE and very large breakfast, there will also be some well-known rugby faces in store too – several team mates from the Auckland Blues will be there on the day but staff are not revealing just who at the moment! The Monster PlaceMakers truck will also be on display and the first 100 people through the door (opening at 7am) will be given special ‘goody bags’ with some great freebies and a host of information on the tools available. Events co-ordinator at Pakuranga PlaceMakers, Aimee, expects many of the store’s regular “trade customers” will bring their children in for an early breakfast before school and, of course, to see the Monster Truck and Blues players. The Rock FM radio station will be at the breakfast too and a couple of power boats from NZ Offshore series will also be on display. They will be racing the next day (February 28) at Beachlands where PlaceMakers Pakuranga will host a VIP event on the day. With thousands of dollars worth of prizes up for grabs (including a VIP pass to the boat racing), why not come along to the breakfast and take your chance to win on Spin the Wheel. www.placemakers.co.nz Hours Mon-Fri 7am-5.30 pm; Saturday 8am-5pm; Sunday 9am-5pm

Giving The Bard that hip-hop style HE Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and Richard Jordan Productions are bringing a public showcase of Othello: The Remix to South-East Auckland. It’s performed at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau on Wednesday, March 18, as part of the Auckland Arts Festival. International hip-hop dancers the Q Brothers are planning to turn up the volume on The Bard’s classic tragedy Othello. The show is a theatrical adaptation of the story but told with rap music. It’s described as an “innovative, intelligent and utterly genius take on William Shakespeare’s iconic play. The story centres on the fictional character Othello, who in the rap version is an MC who “gets out of the ghetto and goes straight to the top. He wins the respect of his peers in the music industry, as well as the adulation of his fans and the heart of the gorgeous singer Desdemona. However, Othello has also attracted the spite of hip-hop artist Iago, who has sinister plans in mind for him. The stage production features the talents of the Q Brothers, comprised of rapping siblings GQ and JQ. The brothers grew up in Chicago in the United States and are musicians, actors, writers, educators and music DJs. They’ve formed a critically-acclaimed brand out of Shakespearean hip-hop, touring internationally

Market rise continues unstoppable THE number of days it took to sell a property in Eastern Beaches dropped to 29 in January compared with 45 the same time the year before, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) ďŹ gures. The drop is reecting the lack of listings in the Auckland market. Meanwhile continued high demand saw the average median dwelling price in Eastern Beaches in January rise 13% to $822,000 compared with $726,000 the same time the year before, while the numbers of dwellings sold increased by 20% to 127 from 106 in January last year. REINZ chief executive, Helen O’Sullivan says the continuing strong performance of Auckland prices is vexing commentators and policy makers alike. “However, the root cause of the problem remains a shortage of property available for sale. “Listings across Auckland remain low by historical standards,â€? she says. “This, coupled with continued high demand, is seeing prices inevitably move upwards. Increases in supply from new construction will help to ease this problem but, for the present, lack

of listings is the main impetus driving Auckland dwelling prices.

the number of sales made in the month of January over the two previous years, he says.

While a drop off in the average price between December and January is normal as the market gradually builds new momentum after the holiday break, Barfoot & Thompson’s managing director, Peter Thompson says this year properties held on to their high December values.

“The price segment where property is under the greatest buyer pressure is in the $500,000 to $1 million category.

Sales volumes were in line with

Harcourts chief executive,

“This is where the majority of buyers are looking and there is a critical shortage of potential properties available.

Hayden Duncan says with record migration levels, stable economic conditions and a lag in new builds coming on to the Auckland market, he expects the imbalance between supply and demand to keep house prices above 2014 levels. “Despite an increased number of building consents last year, demand for residential housing in Auckland is increasing at a faster rate than supply, he says. “We don’t expect to see any

reversal in trends this year and, with the September election now well behind us, current low interest rates and high consumer conďŹ dence, we expect that strong buyer activity will continue well into autumn. “New Zealand is in a situation where we have growing population numbers, a stable economy and growing consumer and business conďŹ dence,â€? he says. “The only thing preventing those looking to buy property is the lack of affordable housing in the areas it’s needed.â€? Realestate.co.nz chief executive, Brendon Skipper says while January traditionally attracts more new listings than December, this year it was particularly active with the strongest start to the year for some time. “This bodes well for the ďŹ rst quarter, as February and March are usually some of the busiest months of the year for new listings,â€? he says. “There appears to be no let-up in the seemingly unstoppable climb in the average asking price of home sellers. Coupled with the fall in inventory, the current property market is one of the most favourable for sellers for some time.â€?

When Di and Gordon Whiteacre bought their waterfront townhouse at Mission Bay two years ago, it was ready for remodelling, especially the 21 year old kitchen. Thanks to Caroline Charman from Jag Kitchens the kitchen has been transformed into a chic and timeless space.

“We didn’t want any clutter on show even to the point that the barstools can be neatly stacked away under the island bench, Di says.

The Whiteacres lived with the original kitchen for 12 months before calling Caroline, a Jag kitchen designer of many years experience.

In addition, an elegant white and silver dining table from Bo Concept matches the kitchen’s white colour palette perfectly. And it all ties in with stylish French Oak flooring.

“We wanted to use Jag Kitchens and, in particular, Caroline. We’d worked with her on a previous kitchen job and she was great, explains Di. “Before we pulled out the old kitchen, we had a meeting with her to discuss what we would do. Caroline is good at knowing what’s going to work and the best way to achieve it. She also knew we were very particular about detail. Caroline says she knew Gordon and Di had high standards and a vision to capture views from the kitchen. “When it came to planning their dream kitchen and ensuring none of the location’s beauty, or panoramic outlook to Rangitoto, were lost, it made sense that the design should flow seamlessly into the living area. The original kitchen had been closed off from the living which was three separate spaces – living, dining, lounge. By removing a central wall and fireplace, one large space was formed with the newly-designed kitchen now flowing into the living area. Di describes the new kitchen as “top

quality and timeless, a kitchen, which works extremely well. “It should see us out, she jokes. In particular, she loves the minimal, no-fuss, contemporary lines and says the streamlined space works well. “Of course, I now have unobstructed views out to sea – perfect. As for Caroline, she is pleased with the well-defined seamless appeal of the kitchen’s open plan flow. “What is most important to me is the fact that Di and Gordon are enjoying living and working in their kitchen and its function is perfect, especially as they entertain a lot. The new cabinets are lacquered satin Black White and are paired with Silestone Blanco Zeus Suede finish worktops. The Blanco Silgranite white sink is matched perfectly to the worktops which have the additional benefit of drainer grooves.

To achieve the desired minimalist look, aluminium extrusion handles were fitted under the benchtop enabling the Bosch integrated dishwasher to match the cabinets.

All doors are fitted with the Blum push touch hinge mechanisms and the drawers are fitted with Blum Servo Drive electric motion support systems for easy opening and silent closing.

Di and Gordon selected Bosch stainless appliances with an oven tower, containing a combination microwave oven and a second oven, allowing for catering flexibility.

To maximise storage, clever storage solutions have been used, such as a Hafele Le Mans system to fully utilise access to a corner cupboard.

The induction cooktop and the dishwasher are both fully integrated while a double-door Samsung fridge is plumbed with water and ice making.

Di and Gordon, who have four adult children, formerly lived in a large home before downsizing to the townhouse. But, their move has been seamless and they are thrilled with the ease of living their contemporary new space affords. They are particularly delighted with the help Caroline and Jag Kitchens have given them in creating an amazing workspace. “We’ve had many parties here with lots of people working in the kitchen. It really works well, Di says. Jag Kitchens specialises in customdesigned kitchens and has its own manufacturing plant. The staff also use a state of the art 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Monday, February 23, 2015 — 15

ELSIE HOUGHTON IS BACK IN TOWN! AFTER A fun-filled working holiday in London, Elsie Houghton is back in Howick busy doing what she enjoys best – selling real estate with the Howick Branch of Pakuranga & Howick Realty Ltd. “My real estate career stemmed from being a qualified New Zealand Law Society legal executive working in residential conveyancing with local law firms for more than 25 years,” Elsie says. “This valuable background has given me the competitive edge and, as a result, I boast an effective and successful rate in buying and selling houses. Elsie says she enjoys purchasers who give her their criteria for their ideal home.

“I seem to be on their wave length immediately and can picture their ideal property in my mind. In no time, after extensive research and on-line enquiries, I am happily engaged with my purchasers, showing them properties to meet their needs.” And Elsie loves the thrill of the property chase: “I never give up! I have this insatiable appetite to get a result whilst continuing to work hard to gain a pleasing result for the buyer”. However, Elsie says one important point to note is that the journey to find that perfect property should always be fun-filled, relaxed and, hopefully, stress-free. “And, then, when I have a property to sell, I ensure the owners are fully informed as to the marketing plan, the response it receives and also feedback from the open homes. “Quite often, owners mistakenly think their

house will sell within five minutes on this busy market but it is not quite as simple as that.” Presentation is a key factor and Elsie provides proper advice on how to highlight a property’s best features. “There is a lot of work involved to ensure purchasers have all relevant property information from Lim reports and title searches through to rates, CV information, local schools and even bus routes,” she says. “As an agent, I need to be fully prepared when listing a property for sale because I want the owners to feel 100 per cent confident with my ability to sell their most valuable asset. I mean business and I want to do it right! “ Elsie is waiting to do business for you. Give her a call now and, you too, will enjoy and benefit from her extensive real estate experience!

Don’t delay... call today! For a confidental meeting with no obligation, please contact:

Wealth of middle distance talent BW[Sa1ZOaaWÂżSRa

CONCENTRATION of New Zealand’s up-andcoming middle distance running talent was on display at Lloyd Elsmore Park last week. Leo Roper is a perennial front-runner in running and multisport events and was second in senior boys’ road race at the national secondary school athletics championships. Trent Dodds, also a champion multisporter, is the national junior boys’ road race winner. Theo Quax, the son of Kiwi running legend Dick Quax, is ranked second in New Zealand for the junior boys’ 1500metres. All are Macleans College pupils. At the school’s athletics day last Wednesday, a special race was organised to pit the speedsters against one another. Unfortunately, fellow pupil

and race favourite Flynn Palmer, the national junior boys’ 1500m champion, was unable to take part due to an injury. “We thought we had to showcase this to the rest of the school, says Macleans’ director of athletics Laurie Powell. “A group like this doesn’t come around very often.

The event was lightheartedly hyped by the MC as the biggest 1500-metre race in New Zealand since the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, when John Walker ran second to Tanzanian Filbert Bayi and both broke the previous world record. “Leo, Trent and Theo were

all in the lead at different stages of the race, says Powell. “It was awesome. Over the final 100m, Theo and Leo broke away. The pair was neck and neck until the finish line, with Leo snaring the win by the narrowest of margins – depending on who you talk to. “It was an amazing race, says Powell. “It was right down to the wire. Leo won by a lunging chest. There are plans to hold the race again next year, with more promising runners coming through the ranks. Also at Macleans is Nick Burke, the Auckland junior boys’ 1500m champion, Nicholas Cowley-Andrea, the best junior boys 3000m runner in the province, and Wilhelm Muller, the reigning Auckland year 8 800m and 1500m title holder.

CRICKET players at Bucklands Beach Primary School (BBPS) were treated to a visit by England international and renowned big hitter Luke Wright last Thursday. Wright is the son-in-law of BBPS teacher Sue Everard, and is based in East Auckland during the English off-season around his stints in the Australian and New Zealand Twenty20 competitions. The Sussex, Melbourne Stars and Auckland Aces player cast his eye over the

youngsters’ techniques and passed on some sage advice. “I think first and foremost you have to enjoy the game, or else you won’t practise, he says. “The only way to get better is by playing all the time and if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t commit to what you need to do. Nine-year-old Oliver Rowley was given a valuable pointer to improve his bowling action. “He showed me how to bowl straight and not off line, says Oliver, who is in

Some amazing achievements by my students: Sachini 92% (A* pass) for IGCSE Maths.

Emily

88% (A pass) for IGCSE Maths. Students normally sit this exam in year 11. These 2 students were only in Year 10!

Kairui

Excellent for all three Maths externals for NCEA Level 3. “We are so happy for him, and thought we’d better share this with you, because you are the one who really helps with his achievements! Thank you again!

Luis

Excellent for Level 3 Maths. Merit for Level 3 Physics. Luis has been accepted for an engineering course at university.

Arran

Now a Bachelor of Engineering “Hi Bill, just thought you might like to know that Arran has finished his Bachelor Of Engineering Technology at Unitec. He has been getting great grades (A’s) and has landed himself a great job at a civic engineering company at year’s end. We would like to thank you for the expert training and tuition which we believe was material in Arran’s success.

Parents should note that NCEA students are doing ongoing internal assessments during the term which count for credits in exactly the same way as do end of year exams so these should be taken very seriously, especially by those students seeking merits and excellences. Enrol now to do practice tests and to find out what the examiners are looking for when you write your answers.

TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!

Hunt named cricket club legend By Daniel Silverton

A

LAN Hunt has been hooked on Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club ever since his first training session. Hunt is one of the most successful cricketers, as a player and coach, to be associated with the club after arriving as a 21-year-old in 1980. “Don Hattaway was the premier captain at the time, Hunt told the Times. “He contacted me and said he’d be keen for me to come along. “I’ve been here ever since. Already an established premier grader, Hunt’s wily off-spin bowling and elegant batting bolstered the Howick Pakuranga line-up. “Originally I probably came as a bowling batter. As things evolved I went up the order and became an allrounder. The same year, Hunt became one of Howick Pakuranga’s first national representatives when he was selected in the New Zealand under-23 team. The following season, he helped the club to its maiden two-day championship, and made his debut in what was to become a long career in the Auckland State Shield and Ford Trophy teams. Hunt was a mainstay in the Howick Pakuranga team for years to come, when his commitments with Auckland would allow, batting at number four and always among the leading bowlers. “There was a time when Auckland players didn’t give club cricket the effort I believed it deserves, he says. “While I played for Auckland for a long time, I always played for Howick Pakuranga when I could.

STATUS BESTOWED: Alan Hunt’s playing prowess for, and commitment to, Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club has earned him a special honour. Times photo Daniel Silverton

Hunt played 67 first class matches over 13 years for Auckland, missing just one season due to an ankle injury. He was rewarded for his long service with a benefit year in 1992-3, the only non-international player to receive that honour. In 1993-94, Hunt captained Howick Pakuranga to its second two-day title, the last time it was held by the club. “There are only two of us [Hunt and Nigel Scott] who have played in

the two two-day championship winning sides, says Hunt. He also contributed to four oneday championships, the last in 19992000 as a 40-year-old. Accordingly, Hunt was named Howick Pakuranga’s player of the decade for the 1980s and 1990s (along with Blair Pocock), and was the Auckland club cricketer of the year in 1987-88. “[Those years] are very strong, good memories for me, he says.

“We had a good crop of premier players who played for each other. Everyone would stand up and do well at any given time. We had good depth and character, and cricket smarts. “We might not have been the most skilful, but we had a mental capacity that helped get us across the line in a lot of competitions. Following his playing career, Hunt went into representative coaching, first with the Auckland and Northern Districts B teams.

In 2010, he was appointed to lead the Central Districts Stags, and won the 2011-12 Ford Trophy and 2012-13 Plunket Shield in his three years in charge. He is now a coaching mentor for Auckland Cricket and a talent scout for the Black Caps. Having been awarded life membership in 2007, Hunt’s contribution to Howick Pakuranga is being further acknowledged on Wednesday evening when he is inducted as a club legend. Hunt will be ninth member to be named a legend, which is awarded to the best premier players in the club’s history, who have also displayed great commitment. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of it, says Hunt. “I just tried to be the best player I could be and contribute the most I could to the club. Does that make me a legend? I’m not sure. Hunt traces much of his success back to the initial opportunity at his beloved club. “I remember my first training day, he recalls. “I was nervous because I was new and Clive Radley, who played for England, was the premier coach. “We chatted that first night about field settings and all sorts of cricketrelated things. I immediately felt comfortable. “The same year Bevan Congdon came to the club. I ended up sitting next to those guys at matches and was able to pick their brains and learn things to up-skill myself. “That made a massive improvement to me as a player and the way I thought about things. That was the start of me never leaving.
