Mellons Bay man who admitted blackmailing Fonterra and Federated Farmers with 1080-laced infant milk formula wrote a retraction letter and apologised. Jeremy Hamish Kerr, whose name suppression lapsed this week, appeared in the High Court at Auckland before Justice Geoffrey Venning facing two charges of blackmail. The 60-year-old businessman and long-time local pleaded guilty in December but disputed some of the facts presented by the Crown. During the two-day hearing which began on Monday, the court heard evidence from 12 Crown witnesses and watched a video of Kerr’s interview with the police. Crown prosecutor Christine Gordon QC alleged that Kerr’s threats were financially motivated. Kerr’s former East Tamaki company developed Feratox, a ground-deployed rival poison to 1080, for which Kerr received 10 per cent royalties on sales, which had declined in recent years.

been working on the library and information centre as well as going through major renovations. A sea of blue hats and red uniforms avidly watch the well orchestrated waiata by the BBPS kapahaka group. Karanga (a Maori ritual welcome) by representatives of Te Whare Wananga O Wairoa, Te Waka Angamua (Auckland City Council) and Te Roopu Awhina O Wairoa Trust is followed by the blessing of the library.

Bridge cycling perilous in the long term
By Natalie Brittan
A Notice of Requirement (NoR) lodgement is expected soon for the Panmure to Pakuranga stage of the AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative) project. An Auckland Transport (AT) spokesman says it’s going through the board approvals process for the application so can’t advise when it will be lodged. All this can’t come soon enough for Sunnyhills cyclist, Jo Jalfon who nearly fell off her bike seat when AT said it would commence in 2021 and be complete by 2025, which she found “quite unbelieveable”. Currently AT is concentrating on applying for a designation and purchasing properties, so the project is ready for construction if funding becomes available earlier, the spokesman says. The estimated cost of the Panmure to Pakuranga stage is $177 million with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) providing about half and Auckland Council the other half. Six full properties and 36 partial properties, for example small slivers of land or driveway accesses, still need to be purchased for this stage of AMETI, the spokesman says. In the meantime, however, Ms Jalfon’s cycling difficulty is unlikely to be allayed in the short term. The spokesman says because the existing Panmure Bridge is narrow, there aren’t any temporary options for improving cycling.

he emotive skirl of bagpipes will once again set the scene as Lloyd Elsmore Park turns into a battleground this Sunday for the Howick Lions in the Park. Major outfit the City of Auckland Pipe Band will be performing at the annual family event in Pakuranga, fresh from its performance at the world famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo held in Wellington. Twelve-year-old Cameron Dean and his 10-year-old brother, Lachlan Dean will be playing their part. Cameron, a piper, says he picked it up a couple of years ago after his mother, who does ceilidh dancing, met the pipe major for the band. “I liked doing it and it’s an interesting instrument that not many people play.” The St Kentigern Boys’ School pupils’ Scottish heritage also was a factor. “My great-great grandfather used to play the snare drum for Black Watch [3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland] and was one of the best in Scotland.” These days the whole family is involved with the boys’ father also in the band.

the Park will provide plenty of action including mock sword fights with the Celts, the clashing of Roman gladiators as well as Scottish country dance and Highland games including the caber toss. Howick Lions president Neil Hornblow and co-organiser Howick Ward councillor Sharon Stewart are looking forward to a great turnout. Reay and Brian Neben (Times directors) will announce the Times Military Award and will be joined by the president of the Howick RSA, Ray Sangster. Dick Quax, Olympian and Howick Ward councillor, will announce this year’s champion local identity who has put in many unpaid personal hours for the community. Food and craft stalls, children’s entertainment and rides will be available and people are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch. Funds raised by the event will be ploughed back into the local community through the annual awards and sponsorships donated by the Lions Club of Howick Charitable Trust. ■■ The Howick Lions in the Park event kicks off from 11am-4pm on Sunday, February 28 at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Boundary battle lost A
rrival of bulldozers on a prime Point View Drive site in Howick signifies the end of the fight by a group of concerned residents to have a shift in the proposed rural urban boundary (RUB) to the edge of the unique ridge line over-turned. Tenders for sites in the 20 lot subdivision, called Point View Estate, are being advertised (closing February 26). The Point View Heritage Society says it is extremely disappointed and feels let down by the elected councillors. “It looks as if our efforts will have been to no avail.” The society has long advocated that the five plus hectare block of land at 178 Point View Drive be developed as lifestyle blocks with a minimum section size of 5000 square metres. This would comply with the Rural 3 zoning requirement of the Manukau District Plan, plus the ‘protected ridgeline’ requirements and be consistent with most of the properties along Point View Drive. It would also help to preserve for future generations the views from Point View Drive through to downtown Auckland, the society says. “Our opinion was shared by the Howick Local Board and
later confirmed by Auckland Council’s Edge Report by Hill Young Cooper in August 2013. This situation was also carried into the Draft Auckland Unitary Plan and we felt happy with that.” However, behind closed doors and unbeknown to the society, the council changed the zoning of the block to ‘mixed housing suburban’ and extended the Rural Urban Boundary (RUB) up to Point View Drive to allow for this. This change was carried forward into the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan (PAUP) “and to our dismay, allowed the developer to use multiple small sections”, the society says. “Our only course of action was to make a submission to the Hearings Panel, which we did, but that would not be heard for more than a year and deliberations would not be released until mid-2016. “Once this change was in the PAUP it assumed a high status and allowed the property to be considered for a fast-track Special Housing Area (SHA). So the developer quickly lodged his application for an SHA which required no notification or normal RMA (Resource Management Act) scrutiny and it was granted.” As a last effort, one of the society’s members contacted
the council’s chief executive questioning the procedure by which the RUB and zoning had been changed for the PAUP as there had been no public notification or chance for any public input before the change was made. The council strongly maintained there had been sufficient consultation and elected members exercised their democratic rights in relation to the subdivision. “Our member referred the matter to the Ombudsman, only to be told that decisions of the full council were not within the Ombudsman’s jurisdiction to investigate.” Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross advised the society that it would take an Order in Council to have the matter reviewed or overturned. “So we are very disappointed and feel we have been let down by our own elected Auckland councillors and it looks as if our efforts will have been to no avail,” the society says. At its monthly meeting this month Howick Local Board elected member, Steve Udy asked Howick Ward councillor Dick Quax whether the Point View Drive development was meeting the 10 per cent of affordable housing criteria for SHAs. Mr Quax said smaller sections were usually provided
for affordable housing. In a response to Times questions, Elizabeth Wells, SHA programme director consenting, says the Point View Drive developer has been granted consent for 68 residential lots and is providing seven for the affordable component (10 per cent) which meets the Order in Council requirements. The size of the lots for the affordable dwellings ranges from 142 to 241 square metres, she says. However, information on the real estate website says the 20 lots currently up for tender range from 566-1662 square metres. Ms Wells says a consent notice is placed on the titles of the small lots to ensure they are developed and sold as affordable. Their development will require further resource consent. “All purchasers of these affordable dwellings are required, by way of a condition of the consent, to sign a statutory declaration that they meet the eligibility criteria for purchasing an affordable dwelling, such as an income threshold or first home buyer. “All conditions of consent, including the provision of the statutory declaration are monitored for compliance by Auckland Council.”

New World Howick has confirmed a car smashed into the supermarket’s front window. “Yes, there was an incident in our store yesterday late afternoon (Monday). An elderly man accidently drove into the front window of the store,” said a spokesman from New World. “No one was hurt and emergency services did attend the accident.” The spokesman said the cleanup in store took about 30 minutes and a temporary window was installed until a permanent one could be fitted. The store is open for business as usual.

Mrs Bigwood says a significant amount of money has been spent by the Ministry of Education on the library and information centre, “and the board put in money as well. It wouldn’t have happened without the huge parent support.” She says while the school had a master plan, they have now renovated almost every classroom creating new learning spaces.

Buses strike in east
House of memories
By Natalie Brittan
A woman who grew up in the house that was razed in Flat Bush recently has described happier times at her former family home. Waiuku woman Angela Burrill says she visited the property just weeks before the fire destroyed the large two-storey house. “I was very upset and devastated that it’d been used as a pit. The outside looked like everybody had been tipping their unwanted clothes, toys.” Ms Burrill says the inside was no better. “It’d been totally trashed. All the windows, aluminium, hot water cylinders, and anything of value had been taken.” She described it as a mansion that was her parents’ dream home and where life began for the Hall family and their three daughters. “My dad built the house in 1980 and my grandfather built the pool.” There were five bedrooms on the lower level and a loft. “It had beautiful upstairs living. We had a pool table, stereo and a bit of kitchenette upstairs.” She says the upper level was in better shape when she visited. “It still had wallpaper, a beautiful wooden roof and balustrades. nger, frustration and a sense of camaraderie were the feelings of bus drivers on strike outside the Howick & Eastern bus depot on Friday. The 24-hour demonstration on Ti Rakau Drive coincided with city-wide industrial action of bus drivers against NZ Bus which serves central and west Auckland and the North Shore. The Howick & Eastern bus company which serves the eastern suburbs comes under the InMotion Group owned by Scottish billionaire Sir Brian Souter and protests were directed towards him. It is understood to be the first time Howick & Eastern bus drivers have gone on strike. They are contesting the end of overtime rates and the introduction of a flat rate of $21 while the separate NZ Bus dispute is around four-hour break times for split shifts. Picketers holding placards received toots for support along the main road in Burswood. More than 70 bus drivers were on strike, impacting the nearly 150-strong fleet. Times journalist Rumer-Grace Archer said her bus turned up but was almost empty. A large inflatable pig symbolising Sir Brian was added to the scene later in the day. Police were present to help ease any disturbances that arose. Constable Darrin Heaven says the strike was “pretty good-natured”

and “benign”. FIRST Union spokesperson Rudd Hughes, who represents the drivers, said they want to bargain. “We hope to get the company back to the table and stop attacking the penal rates of the drivers.” Mr Hughes alleged Howick & Eastern offered a lump sum compensation, depending on how long drivers worked at the company, of up to $5500 after tax. “They [the bus drivers] are actually going to be taking a pay cut if they lose the overtime.” He said drivers would have to work 60-hour weeks to earn less than they were earning previously.
He said the resentment directed at owner Sir Brian is justified. “Wherever Brian Souter’s gone, he’s gotten rid of overtime and penal rates and he’s always worked on flat rates.” Howick & Eastern Buses general manager Sheryll Otway said the company believes it has put a substantial offer on the table. “Most drivers will be better off over the next two years and the removal of overtime rates is not being done without appropriate compensation.” Ms Otway said the company’s profitability is expected to decline even with these changes and is still in direct discussions with the union and staff.

still in its former state apart from the kitchen had been taken.” She says as she and her sisters left the nest, her parents moved on. The home was rented for a time and sold a few years ago. The land is now categorised by Auckland Council as a Special Housing Area which fast-tracks development to include affordable housing and will eventually house apartments, terraces and mixed suburban residences. Officials have established that the fire that broke out on February 12 had been suspiciously lit. Ms Burrill says when she learnt about the fire from an old friend, she felt regret. “It’s a bit sad because there’s memories there. I personally would’ve loved to buy that house and do it up but the reality is the piece of land that it’s sitting on is simply unaffordable.”

HOWICK VALLEY
Moore St, Vincent St, Elliot St, Wellington St, Union Rd
We’ve lost one of our best Today we dedicate this Howick Valley page to a truly awesome guy and owner of a well-known neighbourhood business, Howick Auto Painters & Panelbeaters. Most sadly, last month, we lost Bob – Robert Norris – just before Auckland Anniversary Weekend. He was only 60 and his sudden passing has had a big impact on all of us who knew him. Bob was born on December 3, 1955. I first met him at Howick Primary School and have shared many tales down those years and caught up with our former classmates at our yearly reunion at Palmers Garden Centre, usually in May. His funeral was held at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, where both Bob and his son Craig learnt to sail. As well as the Norris family, hundreds of friends from all sorts of fields and endeavours attended the memorial service, filling the club to capacity and confirming how much Bob was loved and admired by his community. His schoolmates spoke fondly of him at the funeral – decades of friendship left them with a wealth of memories. He was always a happy, healthy, professional and articulate family man. His passion for restoring classic cars was well-known and many Howick car owners have him to thank for immaculate paintwork. He was a keen runner and had completed marathons when he was younger. When his knees could no longer keep up, Bob walked regularly never failing to venture out on his evening rounds after work. Father to two and proud grandfather to three-year-old George and six-
month-old Louie, Bob was well-loved by his family and looked forward to his trips to Australia to visit his loved ones. Among many warm tributes and stories that have been told about Bob was his daughter Leigh’s recollection of how when she went for a walk with him around Howick, she knew she’d have to cancel any other plans she had for the rest of the day because she knew Dad would stop and talk with everyone they met along the way. Whether it was friends, clients, or acquaintances, Bob’s genial nature put everyone at ease. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and Colleen, his childhood sweetheart who worked alongside him in their Howick Auto Painters and Panelbeaters business which has been based in Howick for more than 30 years. Colleen and Bob would’ve celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary just this month and were happily married. The words scripted at Bob’s service sums up how we all feel: ‘If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.’ Janine Hickmore (nee Hulse), Times Newspapers

Reluctant agreement on storm water pipe By Marianne Kelly
D
Mr Wichman said he was concerned that the council officers could move the boundaries. “It is subject to an arborist’s report. Why was this not done before the consent was granted? I find this thing Mickey Mouse. From a layman’s point of view I seen lesser things than this knocked back. So I feel uneasy about what can happen.” The board, with four abstainers, carried the motion to grant landowner approval for the installation of the storm water pipe within Bucklands Beach Domain ... subject to Parks aborist approval and conditions to be provided by the manager of Parks (South) to manage construction effects and provide for reinstatement.

SOLUTIONS, with the Citizens Advice Bureau you get there – like paying off credit cards. An excellent website to check out is the debt calculator on www.sorted. org.nz. The code of responsible borrowing is: Work out a budget – make sure you can afford repayments. Look at all the options – are there other ways to meet your needs. Find out more about it – such as knowing what you are signing. Provide real information – a responsible borrower provides all the information the lender needs to make an informed lending decision. Keep the lender informed – unexpected life events can make repayments difficult. Talk to the lender if this happens. You might also need to ask about hardship provisions and talk to a local budget adviser about your options. ■■ Solutions is provided by the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Library Building, Aylesbury Street, Pakuranga; phone 576-8331 or 0800367-222. Think before you borrow money. Ask yourself, ‘do I really need to borrow money and get into debt? Can I wait and save up the money instead?’ If you decide to borrow money, make sure it costs as little as possible as even a small change in interest rates can make a big difference to the total paid over time. Check out all the different options, for example it may be cheaper to get a loan from a bank than borrowing through a store or car yard. Look at the total cost of the loan (which the lender must tell you by law). Ask yourself if you are sure that you want to take on this debt. A budget plan can help you manage money better. This means being more prepared if there are suddenly unplanned expenses. And it means you may not need to borrow money to meet extra expenses. Set financial goals and write them down. Each goal needs to be specific and have a date you plan to reach it by. Set some big goals, like owning your own house in the next five years, or saving for retirement. Set some smaller goals to help

espite concerns about the process followed, the Howick Local Board has agreed to an application to run a storm water pipe through Bucklands Beach Domain to service a neighbouring private development. But heated debate at its monthly meeting on February 15 left chairman David Collings, elected members Gary Boles, Bob Wichman and Steve Udy abstaining from the vote. The developers are the former Pakuranga Community Board chairman Ross Warren and his wife Shirley, a former community board and Howick Local Board elected member. They have resource consent for a three-lot subdivision at their property in Devon Road, Bucklands Beach and wanted approval for the storm water pipe to connect with existing lines in Bucklands Beach Domain. A deputation, led by local resident Chris O’Loughlin, appealed to the board for a second time to consider the application as if the council-owned land next door to the development was in their private ownership. The residents’ concern was that a non-notified consent had already been granted with five waivers to the normal restrictions put in place for subdivisions. The waivers involve height to boundary infringements, a 1.5 metre high retaining wall at the reserve boundary, raising land height by 1.5m at the reserve boundary, a site access driveway width of 3.6 metres compared with the district plan requirement of 4.7 metres, and no requirement for any upgrades to public utilities serving the site. Mr O’Loughlin said the board, as owner of the reserve land, should have been notified about the infringements. Now there was a new request from the developer to have the board approve a connection to public services through the public reserve. But council officers considered the storm water approval was a minor change. Resource consents and parks department staff met with the board on January 21 to discuss the approval process and whether the adjacent landowners were considered affected under the Resource Management Act. At the February 15 meeting elected member Lucy Schwaner said the board had to remember that it was only considering approval for a storm water pipe. “We have had a workshop discussing the other items that are in a different arena. We can’t deal with that tonight, only a storm water pipe through the park. “In my mind I understand the residents’ concerns. But we should only take into account the impact on the reserve and advice we have had is that there would be minimal impact. We should leave it to
the parks staff and arborist to say whether the development should or should not move ahead.” Mr Collings said he had known the Warrens for some time and did not want to sit on the fence. “They have rights too but we must make sure there is no perception of special circumstances. We are defined by the fact that we are only consenting access to a storm water pipe. It doesn’t mean we do not have sympathy for the residents concerned. “We discussed the landowners’ concerns and why the other infringements were not referred to us. We are still seeking advice, especially on the driveway. It’s hard to understand because we have rules.”

Centenarian celebrates with fries By Marianne Kelly
I
f the iconic fast food chain McDonald’s is looking for someone to promote their food they could do no better than engage 100-year-old Margaret Dillimore. Celebrating her birthday with six close friends – at McDonald’s of course – she said: “I love McDonald’s fries. They are wonderful thin chips. And it is the best ice cream – passionfruit – it’s beautiful.” For the past six years Mrs Dillimore and four of her friends have had lunch at - McDonald’s of course. They are Friday regulars sitting at the same table every week at the Highland Park outlet. On her special birthday lunch

day she was overwhelmed. “It’s a wonderful day. I haven’t done anything for all this.” Her friends, however, beg to differ, saying she is extremely well known in Pakuranga, particularly for the Christmas lights and
nativity scene she painstakingly put together at her Pakuranga Road home for 40 years. She was 90 when she announced her retirement from the festive task, much to the dismay of the many people who
looked forward to the display every Christmas. She was also loved for the toys she hand-made and gave away, including dolls houses, prams, and wheelbarrows, all handpainted. Her building skills were honed a few years earlier when her late husband Lionel said they would build a wooden house on their property which in those days they ran as a poultry farm. Mrs Dillimore was having none of that. She wanted a brick house and, to prove her point, singlehandedly laid all 6500 bricks. Christmas was also a busy time for Mrs Dillimore who says she dressed all the Christmas dinner “chooks” the farm sold. “Christmas is my favourite
time,” she says, “and my favourite colour is red.” Mrs Dillimore continues to live at her Pakuranga Road home and says she can’t believe what is happening now. “I can’t believe that I’m 100. I know I have lived for a long time. I remember where I was in every decade.” She was delighted to receive birthday greetings from Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister John Key and the Minister for Senior Citizens, Maggie Barry. However, her friends say Mrs Dillimore has always been in the front row at New Zealand First meetings and is a loyal supporter of Winston Peters. So where’s the birthday card Winston?
Comedy queen brings life’s lessons and laughter By PJ Taylor
The concept incorporating all the advice and knowledge of a mother that she omits to tell her daughter as she leaves the family nest, delivered in a comic form, is an idea that one may have thought would have already been done. She, her publishers HarperCollins and manager Richard Carrington did extensive research to see if anyone else had covered the mother and daughter-leaveshome topic before developing the book. “I was amazed to be the first one,” says A’Court. She’s been performing Stuff I Forgot To Tell My Daughter since 2013, as “it was a show before a book”, and looks

ocialising, trying new activities and keeping active are important at every stage of life, for physical and emotional well-being. Research by University of Queensland identified that retirees who stay involved in groups like book clubs and sports groups, have a far higher quality of life than people who give up their memberships. “We see the difference our activities’ programme makes to our residents,” says Linda Sargeant, coowner of Ambridge Rose Healthcare. “People in our family-owned and operated rest homes and private hospital need interaction and activities that are appropriate for their ability.” Residents at Ambridge Rose Villa Rest Home may no longer be independently zipping off to their local book club but they are still very involved with their community. Meaningful daily activities are planned to encourage conversation, creativity and a lot of fun. “Many people notice their family members become outgoing and their health improves when they move into

Privacy is always respected in all Ambridge Rose Healthcare facilities and if someone is happier in their room and would rather not join activities, the team respects their choice. “When someone can’t come to lounges for activities we take the activities to them, if they are keen.” Call Linda or her team to chat about the options for family-oriented care for older people. outh-east light rail protagonist Nick Meyer has met with Mayor Len Brown who has told him conversion of the Manukau rail station into a transport hub for buses and trains will form the groundwork for light rail down Te Irirangi Drive and into the eastern suburbs. While it’s not as soon as the Botany Downs 18-year-old would like to see, he’s told that serious discussions for light rail could start in the next 10 years. In the meantime discussion on light rail to replace buses on the central city isthmus within the next three-five years will start next month. Mr Brown says a busway is a good starting point because light rail can be installed on the tarmac in the future. In an interview with the Times<ital> two days before he met Mr Meyer, Mr Brown said the busway down Te Irirangi Drive was just a matter of time. He’s pushing for it continuing down Botany Road, into Cascades Road and Aviemore Drive and on to Highland Park where a park-and-ride facility is mooted at Lloyd Elsmore Park. “My view is that the great mass of old Howick is on a limb so we need to take a transit system as close to them as possible,” Mr Brown says. “We can’t take it into the town centre but Highland Park is central to old Howick and Bucklands Beach as well. “The busway, which will be a major transport arterial, is part of discussions right now,” he says. “Its timing will depend on how it sits with the Government.” The need in the south-east is critical with population

growth, he says. “I see a busway in the short term and light rail in due course. It’s just a matter of when. We can go for busways first and as the patronage numbers lift and it becomes clear there is no further capacity, then we can move to light rail. It may be 10-15 years away but at that time we will be experienced with light rail in the central city isthmus.” The Transport Alignment Project between Auckland Council and the Government, he says, will be consolidated in the middle of this year. It will set out the priorities, timing, connections and ways of funding the projects. “All those discussions will be held in the next four-five months. It is a very important time agreeing on transport priorities and funding. So the Te Irirangi transit system will depend on how it is viewed against the whole network.” Mr Brown says Mr Meyer has a great vision, a good feel for how communities are growing and what it takes to get them moving around. “He’s totally on to it. It’s great to see a new generation taking up that same fascination with transport and mov-
ing people. “Youngsters are the primary users, whether its bikes, skate boards, buses and trains. They understand the way of getting around rather than mum and dad taking them there in a car. They understand public transport and, incredibly, they love it.”
CRL visit
Mr Meyer (above) says the team liked his idea [of south-east light rail] and have suggested some alterations and analysis. “Once I have done this they are interested in analysing the feasibility of the line and getting me a meeting with the AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative) to run the ideas past them. “All great stuff. I also got to meet with a lot of the engineers and architects behind the CRL and saw how everything is planned out, which was absolutely amazing. They have a lot of people working on it and their office walls are covered in planning and designs for rail stations.”
Nature competition winding up
JH10953
South-East Auckland schools are being challenged to produce the Super City’s most promising young ‘environmentally-conscious’ fashion designers and chefs. As part of its awardwinning children’s environmental education event, Eye on Nature, the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust (MBCT) is inviting entries for this year’s ‘Wearable Art’ and ‘Cookery’ competitions. First place prizes of up to $1000 are up for grabs. With a focus on ‘Water for Life – Cool, Clear, Clean’, young people will be encouraged to take responsibility for New Zealand’s waterways and its life forms during the weeklong Eye on Nature event. Open to primary and high schools, the ‘Wearable Art – Water for Life’ competition challenges students to design and create innovative, original wearable art relating to New Zealand’s waterways or the life forms within
them. Costumes must be durable and made of organic, recycled or inorganic materials. All entries will be judged during the Eye on Nature week and modelled at a fashion show during the Eye on Nature Family Day on April 9. Competition results will be announced at the culmination of the show with primary and high school categories each offering first place prizes of $1000, second place $500 and third place $250. Budding chefs can demonstrate their culinary flair with Eye on Nature’s ‘Out of the Water into the Frying Pan’ cooking competition, open to high schools. Students must design a dish featuring foods from New Zealand’s waters. Entrants will be put through their paces in a Masterchefstyle cook-off, when they prepare, cook and serve their dishes live at the Family Day, overlooked by a panel
of judges and the public. First second and third place awards, announced following the competition, are $1000, $500 and $250 respectively. Eye on Nature is co-ordinated by the MBCT and held in partnership with more than 30 environmental organisations from across New Zealand. The event is supported by the six Auckland Southern Local Boards. This year’s Eye on Nature will be held at Auckland Botanical Gardens with 1500 Year 5 and 6 students set to attend school-only days on April 5-7 where they will take part in a range of ‘water’ themed interactive educational games, arts and crafts. The event culminates in a free Family Day on April 9 which is expected to attract more than 8000 visitors. ■■ Competition entry forms and more information is at www.beautifulmanukau. org.nz/Eye-on-nature-2016competitions.

Just look at the numbers By Nick Krause
Gaye Allan, classified manager
Many of us have been there. A chat with our friendly bank whether it’s gauging our property’s equity or financing a renovation or buying a boat to tag onto the mortgage. “Ok let’s look at the numbers,” our banker might say, scrolling through your finances on screen while you fidget nervously. It’s the subject Auckland homeowners talk about when we’re done with the weather or cricket or Christmas holidays. Why though would any selfrespecting east Aucklander want to leave this wonderful spot? It comes down to a few simple and yet compelling reasons. You’re nearing retirement and want to realise some equity, you want to downsize (and realise some equity), you’re thinking lifestyle block (and want to realise some equity). Look at the numbers. The natural area where you can find your nirvana and collect on a huge chunk of your home’s equity is in the Franklin District, - Pukekohe and surrounds. The tempestuous Auckland market’s property prices, while anathema to young prospective buyers, has an enormous silver lining for those with equity willing to sell up and make a move over SH1 for a future west of the Bombays. In many ways, Pukekohe is a portal to Howick and Pakuranga and
We bought out there because of the affordability especially when we bought two years ago. Our property is two minutes’ walk to town. ‘Puke’ is strip shopping like Howick, old school, but has the mega stores as a bonus, boutique shopping. Puke seems like it’s in the country, out of the rat race. In fact, it has no sets of traffic lights! It’s the town of roundabouts! Not living there yet, maybe in the future, only drawback would be if you were working in East Tamaki or Auckland areas - traffic! Although in today’s world with lap tops etc, ideally it could suit your hours to hit the motorway outside rush hours. I think one of the bonuses would be the close proximity to Hamilton, only 20 minutes away, Coromandel only 45 minutes away, the Awhitu Peninsula, great beaches, wild scenery and great coastal walks. Another bonus would be the new retirement villages going up, house owners (baby boomers around the 1950s) are sitting on their retirement fund – literally – so the price of housing is ideal for downsizing and to have a little capital in the bank for retirement. ➤➤turn to page 4

its environs not that long ago where lifestyle options and a friendly, vibrant community beckoned. And it has comprehensive public amenities and facilities for a myriad interests as well as natural, rural and waterfront playgrounds. Embracing a wide tract of land reaching from the stunning Awhitu Peninsula in the west, the district swings in take include historic Waiuku and 20 minutes away, Pukekohe, minutes from SH1. Central to its character is Franklin’s farming and horticultural roots which still dominate today. The attraction of Pukekohe is becoming obvious to those eager to buy in. Again, it comes down to the numbers. The Salvation Army’s State of the Nation report entitled ‘Moving Targets’ released this month shows house prices continue to rise

faster than wages and salaries. By December 2015, it now takes 13 years of the average wage to buy a median-priced Auckland house. This compares to eight years across New Zealand as a whole. Both levels are unprecedented. East Aucklanders’ interest in looking to the west for prosperity and lifestyle is booming. A broader trend is bound to emerge too as buyer interest escalates in this promising district. Here are five short accounts from our own staff who have taken the leap.
Helen Perry, magazine editor We built our first home in Pakuranga in 1972 and, in all, have owned five homes in both Pakuranga and Howick. We had never
thought to move from this area which we know and love. But with retirement looming in a few years, we wanted a new adventure away from Auckland’s rat race without completely divorcing ourselves from the city. Pukekohe seemed ideal – busy rural township with great cafes, big chain stores, boutique shopping, picture theatre and an active community. It’s handy to the motorway and is especially easy when heading south – our travelling time to Rotorua is cut by about 40 minutes. My daughter’s family also lives in Pukekohe, so that’s a bonus, but not the only driving factor. We sold up at a good price in Pakuranga, are building with Signature Homes on a lovely section close to Pukekohe township and we’ll have a bit left in the bank. What more could I ask?

East Aucklanders look south-west ➤ From Page 3
Jon Rawlinson, journalist
I’ve met HEAPS of ex-east Aucklanders out our way, both socially and through work. We decided to buy out there because the village atmosphere reminded us of how Howick used to be, and we could get more for our money without being left up to our eyeballs in debt. We are further away from the city (which we visit less often since we moved) but considering east Auckland’s own (and growing) traffic problems - largely caused by it being a peninsula, which results in bottlenecks travel time to the city isn’t very much longer at all. My partner and I both commute from Pukekohe to Botany. Traffic congestion is a daily problem but, on balance, it’s worth it to own our own, affordable home in a fantastic town. Biggest plus? A closer-knit community, rural surrounds, (mostly) friendly people. What would I tell someone considering buying out there? Do so. It’s a great town in which to live with a friendly community... long-time Howick locals should fit right in!
Emma Smith, circulation manager I wanted to live in a town with a strong sense of community, one I could become part of. My

parents live in Drury so it is nice to be close to them. Homes were also a lot more affordable. You get a lot more ‘bang for your buck’ so to speak. Even though it’s part of Auckland, you don’t feel like you’re part of a big city and the hustle and bustle. It’s perfect! How do I find it compared to living here in the east? I grew up out east and it’s very similar to Howick in regards to its sense of community. As to travel time, it is what it is. Wherever you live, you are going to have to deal with traffic if you don’t work locally. It takes me roughly an hour to get to work but I don’t mind. At the end of the day I get to come back to Pukekohe and enjoy everything I love about it.

Rural gem sparkles in Waiuku A
new rural residential subdivision in the growing Franklin district has created an ideal lifestyle for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city yet enjoy a modern environment with everything within arm’s reach. Unlike other developments where the land is stripped and bare, Blackwood Park boasts a lush green oasis, a refreshing sight for urbanites’ sore eyes. The four-hectare site is divided into 11 slices of paradise, of vary-
ing shapes and sizes, all blending in with a picturesque landscape featuring native grasses, flaxes, shrubs and trees. Developer Roger Coutts says he wanted to nurture the land giving people the best start for building their dream home. “We’ve planted nearly 7000 native plants and a further 200 deciduous trees. Establishing any planting early is a bonus for residents,” says Roger. “Often people don’t get round to
planting trees until after building and, as we know, every year on a tree helps.” An industry veteran who has been involved in property and construction for decades, Roger was responsible for the Dry Hills project in Marlborough, where beautiful Tuscan-esque estates co-exist with vineyard country. Having now lived in Auckland for 25 years, Roger is investing his time and effort into Blackwood Park, creating a statement and

legacy to be proud of. Despite the rural backdrop, residents can enjoy state-ofthe-art infrastructure including fibre optics, three phase electricity and a self-sufficient water system. “The subdivision has its own water supply,” says Roger. “We’ve built a deep bore equipped with high-end water pumps and it’s actually a much more affordable option than council-supplied water.” At the centre of the site is a large pond of historical significance, with the native planting surrounding the body of water, creating a calm, peaceful setting attracting birds and other wildlife. A historic farmhouse villa built in the late 1800s is another key feature of Blackwood Park, setting up a vision for country living at its finest. The aesthetic elements of the area are further enhanced by attractive stone walls and fencing. On the doorstep of Auckland City with great schools and amenities nearby, Blackwood Park is the
place to be. “Whether it’s city folk thinking of swapping the Big Smoke for a quieter, more peaceful way of life or young families wanting to give their children an environment they can thrive in, we believe we have something attractive to offer.” To experience this unspoilt wonder of nature or to find out more call: Christine Montagna Mob 0272-745-893 Email c.montagna@xtra.co.nz

Eat, shop and play in Franklin Waiuku
Moving to a new area is always daunting but when life’s familiar pleasures are in abundance it can make the process a whole lot easier. The urban lifestyle generally consists of eating out, going to the movies, the gym, relaxing at the spa, and shopping and there’s no need to give all these up by moving further away from Auckland. Here are some attractions further down south that can help ease the transition from the big smoke to the semi-rural lifestyle:
Known for the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, Waiuku comes alive during Christmas and showcases regular festivities throughout the year. Steeped in history, the coastal town is home to a museum and historic village featuring restored buildings dating back to the 1800s. Close to the dramatic black sands of Kariotahi Beach and further on to the gorgeous remoteness of the Awhitu Peninsula, exploring the beauty of nature is just minutes away. The public Waiuku Forest also serves as the adventure grounds for the outdoors offering many swimming and fishing opportunities as well as walking and cycle tracks.
Pukekohe
Pukekohe has long been known as the heart of the Franklin ward, with its charming village-like atmosphere. Boutique retail stores delight at every turn, whether its specialty gifts, shoes, clothing or homeware. Of course, there are all the big box stores selling everything people need and more. Cinema 3 in Pukekohe with its unique setting provides just the fix for movie lovers and there’s plenty of dining options to entertain before the film. Traditional Kiwi fare including pubs, steakhouses and family restaurants dish out generous portions, and cuisines from all around the globe including Italian, Turkish, Japanese and Indian each offer different dining experiences. For casual grab and go occasions or coffee, there are specialty sweet shops, bakeries and cafes to suit

Pukekohe is also home of the V8 Supercars, providing thrill-seeking adventures for those who want to live life in the fast lane or join in the spectator sport.
Wonderfully rural, this patch of paradise makes the most of the land with horticultural and equestrian activities. Comfortably saddled between the holiday town of Clarks Beach and the famous horse studs of Karaka, Patumahoe provides ample opportunity to lead an idyllic lifestyle surrounded by a village community with a history. It also features the stunning water lilies and lotuses of Wrights Water Gardens, a true sight for sore eyes. With a gift shop, nursery and cafe, its beauty remains one of the district’s best kept secrets. The Village Bar and Restaurant is a popular destination with locals.

LOVE WITH BAKING: Children and whanau set up a stall at Botany Town Centre to raise money for Syrian children. Photo supplied
Honouring and Celebrating Life
Children fund-raise for Syria The sight of a Syrian mother boiling grass and another feeding her baby boiled water mixed with jam struck a chord with a childcare centre team who decided to help. Our Place Educare at Botany Town Centre set up a stall in the mall on February 5 and between 10am and 2pm raised $500. The gesture started after a television
news programme aired Syrian families desperately asking for food. The Educare team had a meeting and talked about organising a children and their whanau bake fair to raise the funds for Unicef. With support from the town centre owners, AMP management, the children and their families were mobilised. Home-made baking from
children’s homes and that made in the childcare centre was displayed under the children’s Love Is... banner. Unicef helped out with T-shirts, photos and thank you stickers. The success of the fundraiser has encouraged the Our Place Educare team to look at other ways they can help people in war-torn Syria.

‘park and ride’ users twice a day to meet the 8.15am and 10.15am departing ferries at the ferry terminal. An interim review during the trial will ascertain whether a shuttle service to meet the 7.30am departing ferry would also be introduced. Bus shuttle services will meet the arriving ferries at Half Moon Bay at 5.45pm, 6.20pm and 7.05pm to return commuters to Lloyd Elsmore Park. AT will review the trial period to decide whether it can be extended.
Inorganics refund for residents Super City residents who do not receive an inorganics collection service in the year ending next June 30 will get a refund. The new service, which replaces kerbside collection, will be available across the region.
However, because some collections don’t begin until after next July at the start of the 2016/2017 year, Auckland Council says it’s fair to refund those households that won’t receive the service in the earlier part of the year.
The refund involves $22.77 to 230,000 households, the amount ratepayers were charged in the current financial year to cover the cost of the new service. The refund will be credited through fourth quarter rates notices.

Feedback Fair dinkum
Why are we applauding Australia for allowing expatriate Kiwis to become citizens of their country under certain conditions? Their action is condescending and is clearly calculated to favour Australia. They need our contribution to their labour force. Financially, things are getting tougher there and many New Zealanders are apparently considering a return to their homeland where they can hold out their hand with confidence for the benefits that Australia denies them. So Australia decides to scoop the higher performers off by allowing New Zealanders who averaged earnings of $53,000 per annum or more over the past five years to become citizens of their country. How decent of them. The lower earners, or those who may qualify by earnings but have some health problems, can leave. They have served their purpose. This is cynical. Australia has benefited from their tax contributions to date but will not acknowledge any responsibility toward them in return. There should be a reciprocal arrangement between our two countries. No congratulations are due to John Key for failing to negotiate a fair deal and no credit is due to Australia for its lack of fairness. It seems to be a trait. Harvey Rosieur Howick

Referendum destined to fail
In 2003 (former Prime Minister) Helen Clark and (former Speaker of the House) Margaret Wilson forced through the abolition of appeals to the Privy Council. This was despite opposition from a majority of New Zealanders. Calls for a referendum fell on deaf ears. The government got its way by steadfastly ignoring public opinion. This year John Key hopes to force through the abolition of our national flag. This is also despite opposition from a majority of New Zealanders. Unlike Helen Clark, John Key has accepted that such a change requires the approval of the majority of the people in a referendum. However he will not get that approval. The likely outcome of the referendum will be a resounding personal defeat for John Key. The merits or otherwise of replacing the flag will be side-lined, and the referendum will become a poll on John Key’s performance, not the flag. Helen Clark forced an unpopular policy through by ignoring opposition to it. John Key is making a fundamental mistake if he thinks that an unpopular proposal will get the approval of the public. All that will happen is that he will be hugely embarrassed when his pet project is rejected by the people. There are already signs that the prospect of this inevitable outcome is causing discord within the National Party. The majority of National Party
members and voters do not want to change the flag. Last week’s report of crisis meetings of the government caucus, whilst no doubt exaggerated, show that the party is beginning to regret allowing the Prime Minister’s whim to sidetrack the government, and risk its credibility, all at a significant financial cost to the taxpayer. John Key’s judgment is on trial. John Cox
The flag and skulduggery
It would be a sad day indeed if such an important part of New Zealand’s history could be written off so cheaply by a piece of skulduggery by the Prime Minister and his spin doctors. I sincerely doubt whether the silver fern is recognised worldwide – possibly around 10 per cent of all the countries worldwide, maybe a little more. What is recognised on a much wider scale is Maori culture and the Polynesian navigation that led to the discovery of New Zea-
land and that is hardly represented, if at all, on the alternative flag. New Zealand becoming a republic could be as soon as the Queen steps down and that would be a more world-and-historically appropriate time to make changes to the flag, hopefully with a greater depth of thought than is shown on the alternative one. Gary Hollis Mellons Bay
How much goes to Maori?
Keith Beagley, Dannemora (Times, February 4) that he is concerned that his rates have increased by 10 per cent each year. Either he is very lucky or he has not included the $144 Transport Rate into his calculations. Our rates in Pakuranga have gone up 19.5 per cent since the last rate demand, which does not reflect the economics of scale we were told we would get from the establishment of the Super City.
As for the Independent Maori Statutory Board, they are only going to cost us $42 million capital expenditure, $7m operational expenditure, plus another $39.68m in miscellaneous expenditure. Or a total of $88.68m over the next 10 years – assuming their funding is not increased further. There is also Te Waka Angamau who the Council give $5.7m of our money to each year. By my calculations therefore this amounts to $145.68m given to Maori over the next 10 years. Each million dollars the council pays out costs each rate payer $2, so what will this little lot us? Also why does the council not stick to providing and charging for core services only? I do not pay rates/taxes to provide entertainment etc, for every Tom, Sione and Hu. If they want to be entertained, let them pay for it as we do for the entertainment we want. Arthur Moore Pakuranga

fter a 12-month hiatus, a Citizens Advice Bureau has been re-installed at the Botany Town Centre. Its new premises next to the Botany Crime Watch Patrol offices at the back of the Foodcourt were officially opened last Friday and it opened for business on Monday. Botany MP, Jami-Lee Ross said the new office was in a prominent location with a lot of foot traffic. “The people who draw support from the CAB are more than we realise. You are the unsung heroes. The people who draw on your support without paying a single cent would call you miracle workers.” Mr Ross said despite people living in the south-east being more affluent and with high house prices, “we don’t realise there are people in the Howick Ward who need a lot of support. Even in an affluent suburb there are people in need of support. Let’s not forget that”. After the opening he told the Times the CAB services were especially important in an area of high migrant numbers. “We often have high numbers of people living in single households. Some may be benefit-dependent, trying to move up, and dealing with renting, buying houses and

neighbourhood issues. Howick Local Board chairman David Collings expressed the community’s appreciation to Botany Town Centre manager, Bronwyn Anchor and AMP Capital for their support and making the space available on a five-year lease for free. The board provided funding for the purchase of office equipment.
Since the beginning of last year volunteers at the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau have been providing assistance to Botany area clients. Louise Boswell, manager of the Pakuranga CAB says since the closure of Botany, the Pakuranga bureau has been the nearest to service Botany, Flat Bush and Ormiston clients and the increas-
ing population in those areas. “Botany Town Centre was aware of this need through the phone calls and requests they also received,” she says. “Knowing that we have a home for the next five years to cater for the local community needs is very satisfying to us. Providing another Botany JP service desk is catering to another increasing need in this area,” she says. “We will also host an immigration clinic by appointment on Fridays fortnightly with an adviser to assist with immigration concerns and queries. “New migrants need a lot of assistance to adjusting to life in New Zealand when they are settling in.” ■■ The Botany Citizens Advice Bureau normal hours are 9.30am-1pm MondayFriday, with Justice of the Peace clinics at 10.3011.30am on Monday and Tuesday. Phone 271-5382 or email botany@cab.org.nz or visit 251 Town Centre Drive.
Work to start on sailing building The Howick Local Board will contribute $25,000 to extra remedial work at the Pakuranga Sailing Club building in Bramley Drive damaged by fire last September. Auckland Council’s insurance pool will pay
$166,288 for repairs on the expectation that it will be reimbursed from the hirers’ insurance. The building was hired for a large birthday celebration when fire broke out. The Farm Cove Maritime Trust,
which leases the building from the council, identified three pieces of work to be done during remedial work. The trust represents the Pakuranga Sailing Club, Young Mariners of NZ, and the Scout Association of NZ.

Welcome to ‘my’ opinion at HLT By Marianne Kelly
A
bungy-jump from a Central Otago bridge operated by a self-opinionated South Island farmer is the unlikely setting for Howick Little Theatre’s first production of the year. It’s the play’s premiere for Auckland and the North Island. Central Otago Man, by Nelsonbased playwright Justin Eade debuted in the South Island last year and HLT director Alex Gleed says it will be a “fresh and new” production to bring to the Howick stage. The farmer who runs the bungy-jumping platform, Tryfen Gribilco, played by David Jaunay, has an opinion on just about everything which he shares with his high-profile clients, showing no signs of political correctness. His offsider Marty Ellings, played by James Adlam, brings some poignancy as he wrestles with the fact that his parents don’t take his dream to work in adventure tour-

Mariane Rystygt, played by German Kiwi Sabine Melese is a frosty German United Nations delegate and her French PA is Pierre Mailisse, played by Rabindra Roy, a British Kiwi who speaks fluent French. A passing Dutch backpacker, Heidi Caneln is played by HLT administration manager Dominque Pritchard. Mr Gleed says he was lucky to find a cast so well suited to the parts. “The dialogue is very witty and the humour very sharp,” he says. “It’s a fine balance between Kiwisms and genuine moments of really great comedic timing in the writing. “There is a lot of humour in the reaction of the actors. It’s a very Kiwi play and even those who are

Buyer choice now lowest for years N
umbers of residential dwellings sold in the year to January were down by a third in Eastern Beaches following the Auckland regionwide trend, according to latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. In Eastern Beaches dwelling numbers sold dropped to 85 in January compared with 127 at the same time last year. However the median price was up 13 per cent in January to $928,000 from $822,000 the same time the year before. It also took 46 days to sell a property in Eastern Beaches compared with 29 days in January last year. REINZ chief executive, Colleen Milne says the Auckland region continues to experience extremely low levels of listings, despite the recent decline in sales volume. “Potential vendors are struggling to find new properties to buy and are unable to sell their existing property, helping to create a vicious circle of willing sellers if only there was something to buy,” she says. “Part of the fall in sales could be due to this reason,
compounding existing issues around the LVR rules.” The overall trend for the Auckland region, she says, continues to be flat. Over the past 10 years the average drop in sales volume for January has been close to 20 per cent, while there has been an average three per cent drop in the median price nationally. QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush says the QV House Price Index shows home values continuing to rise in outer fringe Auckland areas of Rodney, Papakura and Franklin. “However for the first time in more than a year values have decreased over the past month in the former Auckland City Council suburbs, as well as on the North Shore, in Manukau and Waitakere. QV Homevalue registered valuer, James Wilson says January has seen a continuation of the softening market conditions prevalent in the latter months of 2015, characterised by decreased activity and an easing of some Auckland submarkets, particularly investor
housing stock. “However, demand for recently constructed dwellings or purchases off-the-plan is still extremely strong, particularly for developments which offer smaller layouts such as attached townhouses or apartments as they offer more affordable options for buyers,” he says. “The construction of minor dwellings on sections with an existing home is also on the rise and is a popular method for investors to improve rental returns across their property portfolios.” Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson says no clear direction is emerging about market trends for the rest of the summer months. “January activity was the normal mix of ups and downs that occur in the first month’s trading,” he says. “However, the clear signal to emerge is that buyer choice is the lowest it has been at the start of a year for 20 years.” ■ Dannemora has made it to 17th on the Barfoot & Thompson’s 20 real estate ‘hot spots’.

Mr McCullum, we salute you T
he retirement of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum from international cricket deprives us of a massive excitement factor we have been privileged to cherish. Never a classical batsman in a purist sense, McCullum could frustrate and exhilarate, his brave daredevil style making him cricket’s Evel Knievel. How fitting that he should score the world’s fastest test century off 54 balls, two better than then mighty Viv Richards, in his
Agnew’s Angle last match at Hagley Oval. Once again boldness was his friend. That the second 50 should come from just 20 balls emphatically demonstrated how destructive he can be. In reaching 145 off 79 balls, it was a near perfect swansong.
What would have made it complete was a win to tie the series against Australia. But once again the Australians were too good, whether batting or bowling, despite the absence of the injured Mitchell Starc. Interestingly the best Black Caps bowler was the stouthearted Neil Wagner who for too long has failed to win test selection. In Christchurch his bouncers collected six Australian wickets when they amassed 505 in their
first innings. Blessed with stamina, Wagner is a brave bowler who never gives up, even when the odds are stacked against him. Unfortunately, both in Wellington and Christchurch, our bowlers have been found wanting in failing to produce the collective strike power of the Aussies. Just when we thought we were closing the gap, we had to swallow the bitter pill of defeat against the old enemy. Meanwhile finding a batting
replacement for McCullum won’t be easy despite the promise of Henry Nicholls. His absence leaves a deep void and robs fans of the special excitement factor he brought to the game. Not only does he leave with test cricket’s fastest century, but also New Zealand’s best test score as the only batsmen to surpass 300 runs. He will also be remembered for losing more tosses than any other international captain. So it’s thanks for the memories Baz. It’s been a blast.
Tigers triumph at New Zealand polo open

It was a triumphant win for the South Island polo team Edmundo Tigers amongst a 7000 strong crowd at the 49th Land Rover New Zealand Polo Open. Edmundo Tigers team, lead by Pete Dormer, travelled north to Auckland in five trucks with 45 ponies to compete against the best polo players. “It’s been a massive effort bringing four truck loads of polo ponies from the South Island and putting a team together, but the end goal of winning the New Zealand Polo Open 2016 was a true reward,” said Dormer. The final game was between Tiger Building’s team, featuring New Zealand’s highest ranked
player John Paul Clarkin with an 8 goal handicap; and an international line up including South African Dirk Van Reenan, Argentine 6 goal player Paco O’Dwyer and Australian Sam Stott. Their efforts were not enough to beat the Christchurch team lead by Dormer, who owns a Christchurch civil construction company Dormer Construction. The team included Olly Tuthill, English Polo captain James Beim, and Argentina import Jauno Burotis who replaced injured Ed Hitchman. Clevedon hosts the annual tournament at the Auckland Polo Club and executive director Simon Wilson said it was a hard fought final
with only one goal in it for the winning team Edmundo Tigers “in the most dazzling and exciting NZ Polo Open ever”. The event raised $42,000 for Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust. The affiliation between Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust (ARHT) and the NZ Polo Open as the official charity is in its second year. “By aligning with the NZ Polo Open we have set a good platform to raise more in future years as spectators understand that our marquee is a regular fixture at the New Zealand Polo Open,” said ARHT event manager Nathan Turley. TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

POLO: Tigers triumph P35
Amazing Grace on top By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER Botany Swarm’s goalie Grace Harrison is beating the odds in women’s ice hockey. Last year, Grace was the first Kiwi to win an NCAA scholarship to play top level college Ice Hockey for St Lawrence University (SLU) in upstate New York. After training hard for six months, Grace finally got her debut as a starting goalie against Harvard in mid-January and achieved a major feat, her first NCAA shutout conceding no goals. Grace’s dad Paul said her shutout attracted major attention in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) “especially as most Americans and Canadians are still struggling to understand how some Kiwi chick can be playing NCAA Ice Hockey. “Seems you have a better chance of winning the Canadian Lottery than getting an NCAA place,” he said. According to the head coach Chris Wells it was the first time SLU has beaten Harvard with a shutout. Since then, Grace has played a further seven

games as starting goalie and was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week and SLU Athlete of the week. This is a particularly unique achievement for Grace as she is one of less than 200 registered female ice hockey players in New Zealand. The opportunity to play for SLU arose after the 18-yearold was scouted while playing in a tournament for Ontario Hockey Academy in Canada. Having played ice hockey with her brothers since the age of four, Grace has also competed for the New Zealand Ice Fernz in three IIHF world championships. Grace will be returning to Auckland in May and hopes to take up a place on the Botany Swarm team again.
owick’s promising golfer, Liv Cheng, is chasing her dreams. The 22-year-old has been awarded the 2016 KFC Golf Scholarship, worth $12,000, for the second year in a row. Cheng’s impressive efforts last year have seen her secure full tour rights for the 2016 Symetra Tour. The KFC scholarship will help her chase her dream of a top-10 place on the Symetra tour money list and her ultimate goal of gaining a place on the prestigious LPGA tour. “This KFC Golf Scholarship will enable me to compete in another full Symetra Tour season in 2016, which is a key stepping stone on my journey to the LPGA. “I am truly grateful for the ongoing support of KFC and NZPWG,” Cheng says. After starting golf at the age of 10, Cheng received a golf scholarship to Pepperdine University in California in 2010 where she decided golf was something she wanted to pursue as a career. “Golf as a profession requires a lot of sacrifices, however, it also comes with plenty of privileges and I’m truly grateful everyday that I get the opportunity to wake up and do what I love,” she says.

The former Macleans College student had an impressive start to her first professional golf year in 2015 with the Australia Ladies Professional Golf tour (ALPG) in Australia and New Zealand. Achieving many of her goals, Cheng had her first win at the McLeod ALPG Pro-Am and made the top 10 ALPG money list. The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) graduate aspires to be the No. 1 player in the world. However, her immediate aspirations include playing alongside compatriot and current world No.1 Lydia Ko at the Rio Olympics. Her attitude and drive was recognised by New Zealand Profes-
sional Women Golfers (NZPWG), whose trustees all voted Cheng as the scholarship winner. “We are thrilled to announce Liv Cheng as our 2016 recipient of the KFC Golf Scholarship,” NZPWG Trustee Liz McKinnon said. “Liv displayed her self-belief and determination in grinding out a solid first season as a professional tour golfer, and we are delighted to be able to continue our support of her progress. “I’m very confident the experience Liv gained during her debut season will help her rise up the ladder in 2016 and eventually reach the LPGA.”
