VETERAN AWARD: Howick RSA service member and patroness of the Women’s Section, Jean Oldfield receives the Times Veterans’ Community Service Award for service to the Howick RSA and the community, flanked by Times Newspapers owners Brian and Reay Neben. Times photo Wayne Martin

Air force vet wins award By Marianne Kelly

T

HERE was a special symbolism about Jean Oldfield’s chosen garb when she decided to wear her Vietnam Parade polo shirt to the Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga, last weekend. To her shock and surprise she was announced the recipient of the Times Veterans’ Community Service Award for service to Howick RSA and the community. “It’s marvellous, she says. “I had no inkling and of course I was wearing the polo shirt. She acquired the garment when she and her late husband, George, a former helicopter pilot in the Vietnam conflict, marched to Parliament in Wellington in 1998 with other Vietnam veterans.

INSIDE

“The Vietnam vets were never officially welcomed home, she says. Mr Oldfield was posted to Vietnam attached to the Royal Australian Air Force 9 Squadron. “New Zealand had a ground crew there as well, Mrs Oldfield says. “They picked up many army people from the jungle. “At George’s funeral one vet said it was marvellous to be winched up and see the name of a New Zealander on the back of the pilot’s helmet. But George said he was just doing his duty. Mrs Oldfield is an RSA service member – in her own right. After a false start to a pharmacy assistant career, at the age of 18 she joined the Women’s Royal New Zealand Air Force (WRNZAF), working at the Taiere (Dunedin) and Wigram (Christchurch) air bases between

1956 and 1959. “I had read a lot of Biggles [fictional pilot] books and all my cousins were boys, she says. “I started as a radar operator with the maps on the tables, like you see in the war movies, then moved on to the Electrical and Wireless School at Wigram which supported compulsory military training. After she and George married, she retired from the Air Force and became an Air Force wife following her husband from Wigram to Ohakea (Manawatu) and then Hobsonville (Auckland) air bases. Mr Oldfield left the Air Force in 1978 and joined Air New Zealand as a safety manager. When the couple moved out of their Hobsonville base house they found one in Pakuranga. “The land agent, when he found out about our Air Force background,

took us to the Howick RSA before he showed us the house, Mrs Oldfield says. Mr Oldfield achieved life membership before he died 15 years ago and Mrs Oldfield took up from where he left off, becoming patroness of the Howick RSA Women’s Section. She annually presents a scholarship, established in Mr Oldfield’s name, to recipients at the No 40 Squadron (Howick) Air Training Corps. Of her latest award, she says: “I was shocked and had no inkling when they [Reay Neben, managing director of Times Newspapers] started to read all the history [of the recipient]. When it was said the recipient joined the Air Force in 1956, I wondered who else was here who did that. Then I realised it was me when they said the person was a corporal when she retired.

AS New Zealanders reflect on the nation’s contribution to world conflict, going back to the Boer (South African) War 18991902, and World War I in 1914-1918, the Times is inviting secondary and intermediate school students to write an essay. Anzac Day this year will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kiwi service in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey. Some students may have records and photographs of great- greatgrandparents who served there. But in this special year, the Times wants to also commemorate the service given by many brave New Zealanders in the years that followed, so the theme of the competition is “New Zealand at Warâ€? . It extends the essay competition to personal accounts of greatgrand-parents’ experience in the North African, European and Pacific theatres of World War II, of grandparents’ contribution to Asian conflicts, including Korea, Malaya and Vietnam, or their parents’ current service in theatres, such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Those with no personal recollections are invited to write about any of these conflicts or their view of what the war service of generations of Kiwis all over the world means to them. The Times will publish winning and highly- commended essays in the run-up to Anzac Day 2015. Essays should be no more than 500 words and can include copies of supporting material like photos or diary notes etc. They will be judged in two categories – primary school age and secondary school. Please clearly state your age, school and year together with contact details. The competition closes at 5pm April 13. Prizes will include Hoyts double movie passes for every essay published; an entertainment pack valued at $250 for the winning primary and secondary schools category essays. Top entries will be published on the Times website too. Entries can be emailed to paulinew@times.co.nz or posted to New Zealand at War Essays, Times Newspapers, PO Box 259-243, Botany, Auckland 2163.

TIME FOR ACTION: Pictured during a visit to Dannemora Gardens Retirement Village in 2013, Prime Minister John Key this week announced his Government is sending up to 143 New Zealand Defence Force personnel to the Middle East.

PM lays out contribution Opinion, by CHRIS HARROWELL

I

S NEW Zealand a country that stands resolutely in the defence of human rights? That’s the question Prime Minister John Key attempted to answer when he announced in Parliament on Tuesday that his Government would send up to 143 New Zealand Defence Force personnel to contribute to the ďŹ ght against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) terror organisation. Mr Key delivered an impassioned speech during a debate on the issue in Parliament on February 10, saying his Government “will take seriously its responsibilities when it comes to standing up to Isisâ€?. “I will not, as leader of New Zealand, stand back and see Jordanian pilots burnt to death,â€? he said. “I will not see young children beheading soldiers. “I will not sit back when people are thrown off buildings because of their sexuality, and then be lectured by the left about human rights.â€? He became even more heated during a debate in Parliament on the subject on Tuesday, haranguing opposition MPs that “this is the time to stand up and be countedâ€?. “Get some guts and join the right side,â€? he shouted. In laying out his Government’s contribution to the ďŹ ght against Isis, Mr Key said this country

would send a “military training missionâ€? to Iraq. Our soldiers will play a noncombat role, training Iraqi security forces at a military complex north of the capital, Baghdad, so they’re better prepared to ďŹ ght Isis. The many barbaric human rights abuses committed, ďŹ lmed and uploaded to the internet by Isis are well-known. They include the beheading of Western and Japanese hostages, and the burning alive of captured Jordanian Air Force pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh. Aside from its many human rights abuses, what scares many people about Isis is the fact it’s clearly an expansionist terror group. That’s the danger it poses to the international community. However, the New Zealand public is right to hesitate when it comes to us sending troops to Iraq. It’s also right to ask what possible difference we can make. It’s estimated the US has spent more than NZ$30 billion training, rebuilding and supplying Iraq’s justice system, military and police since the 2003 invasion and overthrow of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. If the world’s most powerful military doesn’t seem to have made much of an impact, what can New Zealand do? The other question to ponder relates to double standards.

Why do our politicians get so ďŹ red up when it comes to human rights abuses committed by the likes of Isis, but remain silent about dictatorships such as the government of China? “An estimated 500,000 people are currently enduring punitive detention [in China] without charge or trial, and millions are unable to access the legal system to seek redress for their grievances,â€? according to Amnesty International’s website. “Harassment, surveillance, house arrest, and imprisonment of human rights defenders are on the rise, and censorship of the internet and other media has grown. “While the recent reinstatement of the Supreme People’s Court review of death penalty cases may result in lower numbers of executions, China remains the leading executioner

in the world.â€? The list of crimes punishable by death in China includes rioting, treason, arson, illegal possession of or the theft of ďŹ rearms, producing counterfeit money, escaping from prison, organised prostitution and embezzlement. Despite this, Mr Key was all smiles when he met Chinese president Xi Jinping early last year. After Mr Xi visited Wellington in last November, Mr Key said: “Our relationship with China has never been in better shape. “China is now New Zealand’s largest trading partner and we have strong links in a number of areas including business, tourism and education.â€? Is it acceptable when our largest trading partner executes its citizens for crimes such as prostitution, but not when the killing is done by a non-state entity?

Teaching the old brain new tricks By Farida Master

Y

ou can be as sharp at 90 as you are at 30! International speaker Dr Helena Popovic was out to prove just that at the entertaining talk on Brain Power hosted by the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village. “After my mother died, all that my father said is: ‘I don’t want to live. Please give me some sleeping pills’, she said to hundreds of senior citizens, at the newly minted retirement village on Chapel Road. The medical practitioner is also the author of the book In search of my father – her own story of how she tried to reach out to her father who was overcome with tremendous grief, despair and depression—and succeeded at it. Peppered with interesting anecdotes and catchy one-liners, Dr Popovic’s talk on Boost Your Brain recently had everyone sit up and listen with rapt attention. Use it or lose it! The brain runs the show of our lives, she said. “Benjamin Franklin invented bifocal lenses at the age of 78! A can-do attitude is guaranteed

to reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Cut the word `can’t’ and swap it with `how’. Shift the focus. Get curious, it keeps the brain bright and active. When you question, you get an answer, somehow. Negative words put a restraining order on our brains, she said. It’s because we don’t see with our eyes but with our brains. “The minute you predetermine that it can’t be done, we work ourselves into mind blindness, convincing ourselves that we are too old for this! To prove a point, she asked one of the senior citizens to put his arms up and repeat aloud: ` I am strong’. She then hung on to his arms. But he didn’t give in. In another experiment, she asked the same gentleman to repeat ‘I am weak’. Using the science of Kinesiology, the doctor with the gift of the gab, demonstrated how easily he gave in. Language often changes our physiology. “Change your language and you will surprise yourself, she said

about optimising brain function. There were plenty of other pointers Dr Popovic shared with the residents and guests at the village named after the famous car designer and driver Bruce McLaren. Learn a foreign language or a musical instrument, write poetry, try craft, do crosswords, play golf. Do anything that is challenging. Thirty minutes of daily exercise can cut the risk of dementia to half. A 12-minute walk creates a cocktail of feel-good chemicals. Add two days of weight training to improve brain function. Don’t multi-task. The human brain is not designed to tackle more than one job at a time. If you want to achieve something, get focussed. “Get laughing, it raises the pain threshold. Try it before you go to the dentist! “Sitting is the new smoking. Beware of the chair! “Have an alarm at your desk that goes off after every 20 minutes! she said, teaching the old brain some more new tricks!

EVERY six minutes the New Zealand police attend a domestic abuse callout. To highlight this shocking statistic, anti-domestic violence charity Shine is launching its inaugural appeal called ‘6 Minute March’ throughout March. Hundreds of volunteers will be hitting the streets of Auckland to collect donations in busy public places to help fund Shine’s essential services. “Shine tackles the major national issue of domestic violence by providing a range of services focused on supporting victims to get safe and stay safe,” says Shine executive director Jane Drumm. “We also run a free national helpline assisting thousands of people every year to become safer by acting as a supportive, confidential source of advice, information and referrals to local services for anyone who is scared of, or being hurt by someone in their family.” Alongside the street appeal are a number of additional activities taking place in March. Friday the 13th is often referred to as ‘Black Friday’. But on Friday, March 13, Shine is saying ‘orange is the new black’. “Orange Friday is an opportunity to create more awareness in the community and raise funds for Shine’s life-saving services,” says Drumm. “Schools, businesses, groups, clubs and the general public will be encouraged to ‘go orange’ and raise funds for Shine in their own unique ways.” One of the Orange Friday sponsors, DTR, is providing a range of prizes from iPhones to lounge suites for registered participants who reach fundraising targets. Individuals and groups can register or find out more by visiting our website www.orangefriday.org.nz.

Waltzing into the New Year By Farida Master

HE cultural get-together on the occasion of Chinese New Year on February 22 at the Pakuranga Leisure Centre was a lot more than feasting on dumplings, dancing, opera singing and tai chi. Apart from partaking in the celebration of the Year of the Ram, Counties Manukau district commander Superintendent John Tims, and Counties Manukau East police area commander, inspector Wendy Spiller along with 25 Asian officers had an important message to share with the community. “We can’t do everything ourselves,” Ms Spiller said. “We need the support of the community to work together in preventing crime. “This was a great opportunity to acknowledge the work of the members of the foot patrol from this association. “The Chinese choir was fantastic! This is a wonderful gathering that celebrates the diverse community we live in.” While the scores of Asian police officers present at the festive gathering were acknowledged for the work they do, the foot patrol of the Pakuranga Chinese Association were felicitated for taking an

ENDURING LOVE: Left, Mervyn Clough shares a toast with his 100-year-old wife, Elsie; and, right, with their daughter Dulcie Bignell cutting the cake.

Companionship treasured By Marianne Kelly

F

ROM gas lights and long drops to the computerised world of the 21st century, Elsie Clough has been part of one of the greatest changes seen in industrial history. At the age of 95, Mrs Clough continued to relish motor home trips around Aotearoa with her husband Mervyn. Last February 1 she celebrated her 100th birthday at Ambridge Rose Manor private hospital and rest home in Pakuranga where she has been a resident for the past three years. But while age is overcoming her, the woman who has never had a day’s serious illness in her life still takes no medication. Probably typical of many women of her generation, Mrs Clough was denied the chance to study to be a veterinarian in Dunedin and then to train as a nurse because she was needed at home in Auckland. Fate was against her, Mr Clough says. Instead, at the age of 16, she got her driver’s licence and drove her ailing father who was running the family’s furniture manufacturing business. Her mother insisted she learn

to sew, so she worked in George Courts dress-making department until she was 21. She was again needed at home to look after her father while her eldest brother and mother ran the business. Meanwhile other dynamics were occurring at Mrs Clough’s Avondale home. Mr Clough’s family became neighbours in 1925 and the two families became close, often sharing holidays away together. Mr Clough, the kid next door went on the trips but, he says, “Elsie was never in on it because she was tied up looking after her dad.” On the last holiday the two families took together, Mr Clough, now 21, came to know Mrs Clough who was onboard this time. “I was not the kid across the street anymore,” he says. “Elsie came along and we realised we were pretty compatible.” Mr Clough’s trade was upholstery and, apart from a stint on his own, he worked in the furniture factory at which time Mrs Clough was working in reception. They were married in November 1949. Mr Clough was 22 and Mrs Clough 34. The couple set out

on a journey which was to involve them building a house and a boat, first in Titirangi where they lived for 11 years and then to Pakuranga where they built another house and moored their 27-foot launch on the Tamaki River. Having sold their grocery business in Henderson, the couple started another one in Kohimarama, next to a plant nursery where their future son-in-law, Geoff Bignell was working. The nurseryman soon struck up a friendship with Mr and Mrs Clough and their son, Kenneth. But a year went by before he met their daughter Dulcie. “It was the surprise package that came after,” Mr Bignell says. Dulcie and Geoff were married and eventually moved to Maraetai. On seeing the stunning Hauraki Gulf view from their home, Mr and Mrs Clough were sold on the area, first moving to Beachlands where another house and boat was built and, 11 years later to the even more spectacular view from Te Pene Road, Maraetai. A Pine Harbour marina berth came along with the Maraetai house, Mr Clough having built yet

another motor sailer vessel. “We were very satisfied with one another’s company,” Mr Clough says. “We never looked at joining clubs. Elsie always looked young. People had no idea, unless they were told, of the age gap between us.” Mrs Clough, with her love of gardening, had a special rapport with her nurseryman son-in-law Geoff, now well known on the Pohutukawa Coast for his longstanding involvement in the real estate business. Mr Bignell says the family used to refer to Mrs Clough as “the encyclopaedia”. “She was well read and when she could no longer read she listened to National radio and would know what was going on in the world. “She was very retentive of information and was always determined to keep going.” Mrs Bignell describes her mother as a good home maker and mother and “a wonderful wife”. MAYOR Len Brown says Auckland is ready to welcome the future superstars of football later this year, following the FIFA under-20 World Cup draw held at Sky City recently. Auckland will host the opening match between New Zealand and Ukraine on Saturday 30 May, New Zealand versus USA on Tuesday 2 June, and a double header involving Panama versus an African team and Ukraine versus USA on Friday 5 June. “The focus of football fans around the world will be on Auckland once again, following Auckland City FC’s great performance at the FIFA Club World Football championships in Morocco late last year,” says Mr Brown. “This is a unique opportunity for New Zealand football fans to experience world-class football in our backyard, and will hopefully inspire the next generation of All Whites.” The FIFA under-20 World Cup has proved to be a launching pad for many of football’s past and present superstars, with players like Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho all starring in previous tournaments. Many of those participating in the 2015 tournament have already established their reputations in the top leagues in Europe. All Auckland matches will be played at North Harbour Stadium, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies, four pool matches, a quarter and semi-final, the bronze medal playoff and the final. In total 24 countries will play 52 matches at cities around New Zealand. Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) will invest $2.45 million from its major events fund towards the hosting of the event. “The tournament is expected to bring around $8.6m into Auckland’s economy, resulting in an additional 42,800 international and domestic visitor nights for Auckland,” says ATEED chief executive Brett O’Riley.

6 — Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 26, 2015

Looking back, 20 years ago... From the files of the Howick and Pakuranga Times, in 1995 Rock solid tradition

February 20, 1995: The man in charge of handcrafting an impressive rock wall at the entrance of a new Howick subdivision has a passion for stone that was generations in the making. Maraetai resident Len Lavas is a third generation New Zealander following a long line of paternal descendants in the stonemasonry trade. His family hails from the Dalmation island of Korcula, where “just about everyone is a stonemason. “I visited the island once and my predecessors work is everywhere, he says. “I stayed in a family cottage that was 400 years old – and it was still as good as the day it was built. The 32 year old began his stonemasonry career at the age of 16 when, fresh out of Howick College, his father Jim and grandfather Ivan began teaching him the tricks of the trade. He now works in partnership with his brother, also called Jim, and his uncle, also called Ivan. “There is no set apprenticeship in New Zealand anymore because not many people do it, says Len. “To learn takes about 10 years, but you never stop learning. Every stone you work with is different and there are different methods of putting them together. “My grandfather was a great inspiration to me. He lived at Beachlands and his work is dotted all around the local area. He built the wall around Stockade Hill and the sea walls at Bucklands Beach. He was still cutting stone right up until six months before his death at the age of 86. Some of the basalt for the wall taking shape at the Seymour Estate on Seymour Road, Mellons Bay is stone once cut by grandfather Ivan, and dotted throughout the property are examples of the patriarch’s work – including retaining walls, granite and marble paving and a magnificent

four metre high fireplace gracing the homestead. “All the stones we use come from boulders and columns of rock, says Len, “some as big as a motorcar. “They’re split down by hand and each block is cut and fitted individually. To cut the stone you have to hit it hard with precision and strength. It’s a time-consuming process. The Seymour wall will take about two months to complete.

Supper dropped from council’s ‘public agenda’ February 27: There was no food for thought for ratepayers at Thursday night’s full meeting of the Manukau City Council. Ratepayers who travelled all the way from Pakuranga and Maraetai, and Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis were left with mouths agog when city secretary Linda O’Reilly announced that from now on, members of the public would no longer be invited to join the councillors for supper. As meeting times for council and council committees changed at the beginning of the year from 7.30pm to 5pm, it was decided that a full hot meal would be provided for councillors only, she said, to prevent them “dropping from exhaustion. Following the announcement, Sir Barry expressed surprise and embarrassment, and recommended that a cup of tea and biscuits be provided for the public after all full council meetings. “We don’t want to lose our relationship with the public who bother to turn up, he said. Meanwhile, Mrs O’Reilly rejected ratepayer concerns over cost. “We’re looking at somewhere in the vicinity of $8.50 a head for the meal, as opposed to about $7 a head for the supper, but it will work out the same.

Commemorative coin A

COLOURED legal tender 50 cent coin will be on sale to the public from next month to commemorate the centenary of the Anzac landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula. It is the first time that a New Zealand coloured circulating coin has been produced. The coin will be in circulation as legal tender and available for collectors. The Reserve Bank has minted one million of the special 50 cent coins. This number represents the size of the New Zealand population at the start of World War I. Reserve Bank governor Graeme Wheeler says the coin will circulate with New Zealand’s existing currency. “The coin honours the spirit of Anzac that was formed 100 years ago, and lives on today, Mr Wheeler says. “This is the first time in New Zealand’s history that we have had a colour commemorative circulating coin, and we expect it to be popular and highly sought after. New Zealand artist Dave Burke was commissioned to design the coin. It is part of NZ Post’s wider

reflects New Zealand’s national identity, says NZ Post Group chief executive Brian Roche. To represent New Zealand’s national colours, the mangopare is coloured white on the coin, with the background coloured black. Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae says the coin represents the comradeship forged between New Zealand and Australia 100 years ago, far away from home on the shores of Gallipoli. “This coin is a symbol of our nationhood. It reminds us of the events that occurred at Gallipoli. It helps us to remember the New Zealanders who served there and all those who have served our country during times of conflict and peace. And it is evidence that the links with Australia and the Anzac spirit endure. The Anzac circulating coin has the same specifications as the existing 50 cent coin and testing has shown it will be accepted in coin and vending machines. The coins will be available nationwide through PostShops and Kiwibank branches from March 23, and pre-orders available.

Butterflies are free T

HE flaming orange and black beauties are a sight to behold! The gardens at Saint Kentigern College have been filled with signature orange and black Monarch butterflies and green-gold chrysalises. The butterfly habitat in the horticultural area of the college has been a labour of love. Driven by Head of English department, Xanthe Noble, the efforts of the Lepidoptera Club at Saint Kentigern College were recently acknowledged by the Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand (MBNZ) Trust. For the uninitiated, butterflies and moths are members of the insect order Lepidoptera from the Greek meanings scaly wings. The students have protected and released more than 300 first generation butterflies that were once cocooned in the college gardens. Each week, they cleared areas of land in the horticultural area and planted more than 300 swan plants

RECORD number of kids from around the super-city enjoyed an annual triathlon on the waterfront last weekend. The St Heliers 2015 Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon attracted 2700 young people aged seven to 15 years. Sporting celebrities, including Cathrine Latu, Sarah Goss and Ella Williams, cheered the kids on and handed out medals at the finish line. They were joined by Auckland Mayor Len Brown and MP Simon O’Connor. Pierre van Heerden, general manager of Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing Company says it is fantastic to see so many Kiwi kids having fun while giving the event a try. “It was also great to see the amount of support from parents and schools. I’d like to congratulate the kids who took part and those in the background who helped them. The TRYathlon, in its 23rd year, has turned into a rite-of-passage for Kiwi kids. Over the years many New Zealand sporting heroes have taken part, including Alison Shanks, Andrea Hewitt and Sarah Walker. The event is the world’s largest triathlon series for under-16s, as certified by the International Triathlon Union.

TRYATHLON SUCCESS: Howick College student, Daniel Clarke, 13, shows off his medal to Sarah Goss, New Zealand women’s sevens rugby captain.

Help our guide puppies for blind VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed to collect funds to help the Blind Foundation breed and train guide dogs. The Red Puppy Appeal street collection will be held on March 27-28. Guide dogs give people who are blind or have low vision the freedom and confidence to live

an independent life, particularly with activities like catching the bus, crossing the road and going to work. Alison Wheatley, Blind Foundation spokesperson says guide dog puppies go through two years of rigorous training before they graduate. Once assigned, their working life

averages between eight and 10 years. The average time spent waiting for a guide dog is about 12 months, but it can take longer if people have specific needs. To sign up as a volunteer for the Red Puppy Appeal, go to www.redpuppy.org.nz or phone 0800-120-254.

A fascinating culinary journey International gastronomy has always represented an attention to detail, respect for tradition, and an agreeable touch of mystery. Throughout New Zealand and, of course, locally too, restaurant patrons can sample the best of flavours from around the world in fusion foods that adapt culinary traditions from abroad with a few of those from home. Whatever the inspiration, knowing how to blend the right ingredients and present them with flair is essential for a successful voyage of discovery through the scents, flavours, and continents of the world.

A & J Cafe Specialising in traditional delicacies and desserts from Bohemia and central Europe, A & J Cafe at Half Moon Bay Marina has gathered a loyal following.

WOW! Real Value Meals for Lunch & Dinner.

Unique cakes such as honey cake, walnut cake, and mafia cake are not something you see at your everyday cafe but A & J is no ordinary cafe.

Big servings, fast service, new enlarged shop.

It also serves authentic Czech food, bringing lovingly handcrafted dishes to the table – experience a Bohemian-filled omelette (unimaginably light and fluffy), a hearty goulash or spicy grilled sausage with palacinka, the Czech version of crepe suzette.

Deliciously different, there is always something for everyone.

Consistency is a hallmark of La Padella one of the district’s best-loved Italian restaurants. Regulars can rely on an enduring menu offering tried and true Italian staples from pizza and pasta to pollo marsala, manzo funghi and pan-fried fish with a white wine, shrimp and creamy sauce. The best local BYO deal plus cosy surrounds, warm service and a menu which has stood the test of time, makes this Highland Park Shopping Centre stalwart an easy and popular dining choice.

Nando’s Perfection is the name of the game at Nando’s and that means in every way. Perfect A-grade chicken (flame-grilled, not fried), perfectly marinated for 24 hours, perfectly flavoured with Nando’s signature Peri-Peri sauce and perfectly cooked. That’s the recipe that has chicken lovers coming back for more, and more. Far removed from conventional fast food, Nando’s unique taste experience and diverse menu satisfies in every way.

Playhouse up for auction

Young death stats falling

Bitchin’ Bingo and auctioning a children’s playhouse are some of the exciting events on the calendar of the Life Education Trust

THE number of children and young people who die in New Zealand each year has more than halved since 1980 according to a new report. In 2013, 515 New Zealanders aged 28 days to 24 years died compared with 1334 deaths in 1980, according to the 10th Data Report of the Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee covering 2009-2013. Numbers decreased from 674 in 2009 to 620 in 2010 and 601 in 2012. In total, 3042 children and young adults died during 2009-2013 according to the report released under the umbrella of the Health Quality & Safety Commission. The largest single cause of death was suicide, with 645 suicides in total. They included 316 young people aged 20-24, 293 aged 15-19 and 35 aged 10-14. More than twice as many males, 464, than females, 181, committed suicide. Transport-related incidents accounted for 572 deaths, 460 of them involving young people aged 15-24. Sudden unexpected death in infancy accounted for 228 children, 92 for drowning, 77 for assault and 53 for unintentional poisoning. There were 1183 medical-related deaths. Maori have the highest mortality rates, the report says, followed by Pacific people. The mortality rate increases significantly with deprivation. Dr Felicity Dumble, chair of the Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee, says the reduction in deaths reflects the success of a number of initiatives improving the health and safety of young people and children. “However,â€? she says, “any avoidable death of a child or youth is premature and a tragedy. We still need to use this information to determine where to focus our future efforts.â€? The commission is currently trialling a Suicide Mortality Review Committee, with Maori youth one of its priorities as it seeks to identify contributing factors and patterns of suicidal behaviour. The full 10th data report is online at www.hqsc.govt.nz.

ISTRESS Viv knows how to spice things up. Known for her saucy quips and irreverent wit, she will soon make a dramatic entry in a towering ginger beehive, cat-eye glasses, and all that ‘bling’. Having created a stir in Central Auckland, she’s set to raise the temperature at the Celsius Bar in Botany for the Bitchin’ Bingo fundraiser organised by Life Education Trust, Counties Manukau. “It’s going to be a fun evening with a cheeky twist, says the trust’s general manager, Michelle Kidd. “Bitchin’ Bingo is bingo with a difference. To be held at 7.30pm on Monday, March 23, there are plenty of spot prizes to be won and a raffle. The Life Education Trust, which runs mobile classrooms for children aged five-13, is also organising an Ambrose-style golf day at Pukekohe Golf Club. Scheduled for April 20, Ambrose is a more relaxed golf game played between teams usually comprised of four players each. “Since most wives complain that their husbands have been out playing golf all day, this tournament starts at 9am, followed by lunch and an auction, says Ms Kidd. “That will ensure everyone goes back home at the regular time. A beautiful children’s playhouse donated by Registered Master Builders will be auctioned at the golf event. Explaining how they got the playhouse with their mascot

award winner: Admiring the playhouse that will be auctioned on April 20 is (left) seven-year-old Holly NuttallLoughton, Life Education Trust general manager Michelle Kidd, and sign artiste Dean Lovich. Times photo Wayne Martin

Harold the giraffe smiling back, Ms Kidd says Master Builders has asked different charities to apply for it. “Each charity was randomly assigned an apprentice builder for the Registered Master Builders Carters 2014 Apprentice competition 2014. As luck would have it, Tom Southen, the carpentry apprentice assigned to the education trust,

won the national competition at a formal gala event held at The Cloud, Queen’s Warf. “His workmanship and eye for details made him a clear winner, says Ms Kidd. Also volunteering their service was iSign it, an award-winning East Tamaki company specialising in signage and display requirements. Ms Kidd adds: “When the chil-

dren’s playhouse arrived it was in raw wood. Dean Lovich, the talented artiste at iSign it known for his outstanding graffiti work, used the playhouse as his canvas to create a clean look. Life Education Trust is expecting to raise around $3500 for the playhouse which will fund the education of 200 children at a local school.

Horse course shows ropes WHILE many a keen buyer ‘chequed’ out thoroughbreds at the recent New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales, Peter Hingston from Pukekohe’s NZ Equine Training was busy developing new blood of a different kind. Designed to offer essential industry qualifications, NZ Equine Training provides the Equine Stable Skills Level 2 course. However, Peter says the school is as much about supporting the community as a whole. “The aim is to offer equine training for youth [teens aged 16-19], helping them make a career from working with horses. But, in addition to learning practical skills, they learn life skills,” he says. Catering for 21 students at a time, the NZQA-approved programme runs for 30 weeks. It is free of charge to those who qualify for Youth Guarantee funding from the Tertiary Education Commission. The school picks up and drops off students living nearby. “A lot of students come to us without any qualifications; however, they will gain them here! While our course prepares people for the industry, it’s just as much about offering them confidence and hope for a brighter future,” says Peter. “With small groups and just the one, foundation course – which covers introductory stable skills – we’re able to offer a more focused programme, with an attentive, individual approach to learning.” The school has eight horses – chosen to suit riders of any level of ability – which are most often donated by trainers and Waikato Bloodstock in Cambridge.

Originally established in Rotorua by his father, Barry, Peter and his wife, Yoko, moved the school to Franklin in 1996, first to Papakura, then Drury, and finally to Pukekohe. “It’s allowed us to develop purposebuilt facilities with more space and scope so we can deliver a better, wellrounded training programme. It was a bare block when we first came here, so it took some doing, but where there’s a will, there’s always a way!” Over the years, Peter says the school has witnessed some remarkable success stories, with graduates taking on various occupations from stable hands to jockeys. “Vinnie Colgan is probably the best jockey we’ve had come through the school. He’s won the NZ Derby a number of times and ridden overseas; we’re very proud of him! But then again, we’re proud of all of our students,” Peter says. “Another youngster who’s making his mark is Sheel Drego, who’s the breeding manager at Westbury Stud. We regularly take students there on fieldtrips to see a stud farm in action – as well as to the races and the sales too. It’s important to give them a hands-on approach to learning the ropes.” With enrolments now open, Peter says anyone interested should give him a call on 09 238 7780. “You can visit our website [www. nzequinetraininglimited.co.nz] as it has details regarding eligibility for our course as well as lots of information, but it’s always best to pay us a visit – we’re located at 2208 Buckland Road. Just give us a call to arrange a time.”

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, February 26, 2015 — 19

Belief in the Black Caps H

OW cruel it will be if long term weather forecasters are proved right in predicting rain which could cancel Saturday’s World Cup ODI clash at Eden Park between New Zealand’s Black Caps and Australia. Fortunately, predicting the weather, especially in The Land of the Long White Cloud, appears to be the most inexact science known to man despite the assistance “expertsâ€? receive from satellites and balloons. Rarely has anticipation for a cricket match reached the heights of Saturday’s encounter between cup favourites Australia and the Brendon McCullum-inspired Black Caps, who, after three wins against Sri Lanka, Scotland and hapless England, have exceeded our highest expectations. With paceman Tim Southee capturing seven wickets for 33 with his outswingers and England dismissed for a paltry 123 in Wellington, New Zealand’s eight-wicket triumph was surreal. Southee was magniďŹ cent, but no more so than pugnacious captain McCullum in blasting 77 off 25 balls and reaching his half-century in a World Cup record 18. Having scorched seven sixes in that lot, four in one over against poor Steven Finn, McCullum rendered mute a normally raucous and fun-loving Barmy Army. It was an incredible performance, especially when one considers the high reputations earned by Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad over many years. But McCullum, in this form, is virtually unstoppable as he charges down the pitch to smash whatever is delivered to him. However Australia is well aware of the danger he presents and will back the likes of Mitchell Johnson

Agnew’s Angle and Mitchell Stark in the belief they are faster and better than England’s best. Undoubtedly they are right, although McCullum is not exactly a one-man band. However, there is no denying the importance he plays, not only as a batsman but a brave and cunning strategist who sets attacking ďŹ elds for his bowlers. With David Warner, Aaron Finch, Steve Smith and possibly the return of Michael Clarke to lead a formidable Australian top order with blasters James Faulkner and Glenn Maxwell to follow, the Australian batsmen should provide the supreme test for bowlers Southee, Trent Boult, Adam Milne and miserly veteran Daniel Vettori. With India having tamed South Africa, the Black Caps currently look to be the only team at this stage ready to challenge Australia’s belief they are the best team on the planet. It’s been a long four years since they last met in an ODI and it is a match that should answer any remaining questions on just how far New Zealand have advanced over the past year. Certainly in Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor they have outstanding top order batsmen to back McCullum, supported by

the dependable Grant Elliott and hard-hitting Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi. They can expect plenty of sledging from the cocky Ockers. But they do appear to have the courage and fortitude to give them a good run for their money. While tying the Kangaroo down is a favourite pursuit of any New Zealand team, no matter what the sport, in cricket and rugby league, it is rarely achieved. However, when it is, the wait is always

worth it, with any victory cherished for many years to follow. That said, Australia deserve favouritism on the score of their consistency against underdogs who look up for the challenge. May the best team win, so long as it is New Zealand.

THE Howick Hornets is one of four Fox Memorial premiership teams taking part in this weekend’s inaugural Sportsafe Auckland Rugby League (ARL) Coastal Classic Nines. Howick will be taking on fellow Fox Memorial teams the Papakura Sea Eagles, Northcote Tigers and Otara Scorpions as well as Sharman Cup (second-tier) sides the New Lynn Stags and Manurewa Marlins. The ARL had hoped for a 16-team draw. The teams will play a full round-robin before being split into the top three vying for the championship and the bottom three to compete for the plate. The championship qualifying teams will play each other once, with the top two facing off in a ďŹ nal, with the same process in the plate round. The tournament, in Whitianga this Friday and Saturday, is sponsored by East Tamaki company Sportsafe. “The Sportsafe Coastal Classic will provide local clubs with a series of games to help ďŹ netune ďŹ tness and skills ahead of the Appliance Shed Fox Memorial and SAS Sharman Cup seasons,â€? says ARL sponsorship manager Troy Hardy. “It is also the perfect team building weekend, held at a town which will get right behind the tournament. “The nines concept has proved extremely popular already with both fans and players alike, it will be quality rugby league and is an exciting opportunity for grassroots clubs.â€? Howick made its nines debut at a Counties Manukau tournament earlier this month, placing third out of eight teams.

KEY PLAYERS: Black Caps Luke Ronchi and Tim Southee.

I

N JUST its second season, the 2K Cup motor racing series has grown into a full-blown obsession for those involved. The 2K Cup was started to provide an affordable entry point into motor sport. The criteria is simple: cars must cost less than $2000, be a maximum of 2000cc and races last for 2000 seconds (around 33 minutes), hence the 2K name. Pakuranga’s Kent Dalziell has been amongst the action since the first green light in 2013. The 38-year-old engineer races a 1988 Honda Civic he picked up for $1500. “I knew it was all down to power

have out there racing, the number of incidents is really low, says Dalziell. “The committee is really on top of safety. Mallard says: “A lot of guys are driving their cars to the track, so that is in the back of your mind – I have to get this thing home somehow. “There are three goals at every meeting for me – get home safe to my family, drive my car home, and race reasonably well. “The first two are definitely the most important. The fields have expanded to around 90 entries per round, competing in 1600, 1800 and 2000cc categories at the one time, with a number of other trophies up for grabs. The four-door models, such as

Mallard’s 1995 Mazda Lantis in John Player Special-style livery, are competing for the taxi prize, while the lemon award is self-explanatory. “There is one car every meeting that doesn’t last two laps, says Mallard, who has been hooked since he first donned the helmet. “I was a bit scared I suppose. I was trying not to get in the way of the fast guys because I thought I was going to be slow. “I qualified 35th. In the first race, I went up to 15th, so I’d passed about 20 cars and I thought I was the king of the world. “You channel your inner Peter Brock. It’s addictive. The fourth round, of six, of the 2014/15 2K Cup is this Sunday at Taupo Motorsport Park.
