SPACE EXPLORER: The prospect of finding undiscovered life is extremely exciting for Pakuranga College student Sarah Childs, who along with the head of the science faculty, Larraine Barton, will be taking off Times photo Wayne Martin on a Spaceward Bound expedition this week.

HEY’VE got stars in their eyes as their minds orbit the Spaceward Bound expedition sponsored by the Royal Astronomical Society. Year 13 student of Pakuranga College last year, Sarah Childs, and head of the science faculty, Larraine Barton, are two of the 15 people selected from across New Zealand for the week-long programme starting this Friday. NASA’s Spaceward Bound at Rotorua, Tongariro and White Island will cover astrobiology, Earth and space science with astrobiologists and other scientists. The idea is to train the next generation of space explorers by having

scientists, students and teachers participate in the study of remote and extreme environments on Earth, as analogues for human exploration of the Moon and Mars. Sarah’s face lights up when talking about New Zealand being the most intriguing place on Earth to find life forms that are analogous for possible life in extreme environments. “The fieldwork measuring wind, acidity, extreme heat and the arid cold is super exciting, she says. “It feels so good to be around NASA scientists and like-minded people looking for evidence of molecules and microbes that thrive in hot, acidic conditions and contribute to life in space. “Some of the molecules they found
on Earth came from comets, says Sarah, who plans to do a bachelor of engineering degree with a major in mechatronics at Massey University. Though Earth and space science is a relatively new subject, Ms Barton believes it’s had a big impact. “One of the topics we focus on is the possibility of planets outside our solar system [extrasolar planets or exoplanets] having habitable environments, she says. She’s proud that Pakuranga College is one of the first schools in Auckland to fully implement an Earth and space science course to scholarship level. “We participated in the citizen science search for exoplanets where we analysed data collected by the

Kepler Space Telescope to contribute suggestions for stars which might have planets orbiting them. “It’s one thing for a star to have a planet orbiting it, just like Earth orbits the Sun, but for that planet to also have suitable conditions like temperature, atmosphere and building blocks for life would be an amazing discovery, says Ms Barton. “A planet that is twice the size of Earth would have twice the gravity. You’d barely be able to lift your feet. “The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute searches for contact with intelligent life that has managed to construct a means of communication, just like us earthlings, she explains. “In 2009, when I began teach-

ing the exoplanets topic as part of a year 13 general science course, there were 375 identified exoplanets. Now there are 1773 confirmed. “That’s huge progress and also makes this whole area of study really current. “To be prepared for the possibility of sending humans to live on another planet like Mars or to explain the existence of life, scientists look for analogues on Earth – environments that are extreme in one or more way – and study the organisms that live there. “We call them extremophiles. Spaceward Bound is an expedition that studies these environments and their conditions all over the world.

ORE than 400 residents and guests were invited to celebrate the grand opening of the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village in Howick. The $120 million village in Chapel Road was officially opened on December 19 by Jan McLaren, sister of the legendary, late Bruce McLaren. He was born in Auckland and went on to become one of the most successful Kiwi motor racers of his generation. As well as a superb driver – he won his first grand prix in 1959 at the age of 22 – McLaren was also an innovative engineer and team manager. In 1963, he founded the McLaren Racing team, the Formula 1 team that’s still a major force in racing today.

Bruce was killed in a testing accident in 1970, aged 32. The new village has been named in honour of his contribution to putting New Zealand on the map in the motor sport. Jan McLaren said Bruce was well recognised internationally and it was great to see a tribute to him in his home city. “It’s nice to see his name remembered on something permanent outside of the motor sport community. We were pleased to be asked. Former NZ Formula 1 star Chris Amon, who drove for McLaren as well as Ferrari, said it was great to see his friend remembered. “He was remarkable man. He was one of those people who never had a bad word to say

about anybody, and he achieved an incredible amount at a young age which made him even more remarkable, said Amon. The Bruce McLaren Retirement Village will eventually be home to 400 people and includes independent living apartments as well as hospital-level care. Ryman Healthcare managing director Simon Challies said he was delighted the McLaren family agreed to lend the name. “Bruce McLaren was an incredibly talented New Zealander and an inspiration. “He showed what Kiwi ingenuity and a competitive spirit can do. We’re incredibly proud to have been able to name this village in his honour. The motor sport theme runs throughout the village with two

of the first apartment complexes named after Amon and the third part of the McLaren racing trio, the late, great Denny Hulme. The village has already broken a number of speed records for Ryman, said Mr Challies. “There must be something in the name. “It’s been one of our fastest built villages, and the fastest selling in our 30-year history. ■■Bruce McLaren grew up in Remuera, where his dad owned the local petrol station. He had a passion for cars from an early age and in 1958 he was selected as New Zealand’s most promising young driver. He left for England where he joined the Cooper racing team and his international racing career soon took off.

Thieves get nicotine hit “There was a similar burglary at the Whiteacres Superette in Whiteacres Drive, Pakuranga, just before Christmas.”
By Chris Harrowell
S
IX men searching for cigarettes to steal used a blunt object to smash their way into the BP petrol station in Howick’s Ridge Road. Sergeant Tim Riley, of Counties Manukau East Police’s tactical crime reduction unit, says the group allegedly broke into the business at about 3.53am last Monday, January 5. “They arrived at the service station from the Nelson Street entrance in what may have been a white Toyota Hiace van,” he told the Times. “The offenders used a sledgehammer to smash the BP’s glass front door and entered. “They broke open a cabinet and filled a rubbish bin with cigarettes before leaving.” One of the men was wearing a black baseball-style cap and a longsleeved yellow and grey shirt. He also had on grey shorts, white socks and black shoes. Another of the suspects was wearing a black jacket with the hood over his head and black pants. A third man had on a blue hooded top and dark pants. Mr Riley says the service station’s alarm was activated when the men broke inside. The white motor vehicle they were driving was spotted by a member of the public. The incident is reminiscent of another recent crime allegedly committed in East Auckland. “There was a similar burglary at the Whiteacres Superette in Whiteacres Drive, Pakuranga, just before Christmas,” says Mr Riley. “It involved six offenders, all of whom are believed to be male, and happened at about 4am on

Wednesday, December 17. “They turned up to the superette in two motor vehicles and smashed the front door in before stealing a significant quantity of cigarettes.” The two vehicles allegedly used by the offenders are described as a silver Nissan and a black Subaru. Mr Riley says the superette’s owner, who lives on site, was disturbed by the noise when his shop’s door was damaged during the break-in. “The owner entered the store through its internal access just as the offenders were leaving, but it’s also possible he spooked them,” he says. “If anyone knows anything about these two incidents, or saw the motor vehicles involved in the area at the times they were carried out, we ask that they contact police.” People with information on burglaries allegedly committed at the BP petrol station in Ridge Road, Howick, at about 3.53am last Monday, January 5, or at Whiteacres Superette in Whiteacres Drive, Pakuranga, at about 4am on Wednesday, December 17, can phone Mr Riley on 261-1300. Alternatively, phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800-555-111.

Investigation into shooting POLICE investigating a gun shooting which occurred on Christmas Eve are seeking witnesses to the incident who may be able to help with the case. On December 24, a group of young men around the age of 18 were drinking alcohol at the Maraetai Wharf at about 4pm. They left the area and drove towards Whitford in a stolen silver Nissan Teana motor vehicle. While on Maraetai-Whitford Road, police say the vehicle pulled over and an altercation occurred in the vehicle which resulted in a 17-year-old man receiving a serious gunshot wound requiring surgery. An 18-year-old man has since been arrested by police and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Counties Manukau Police investigators are looking for anyone who may have seen the group at the Maraetai Wharf, or while driving along Whitford-Maraetai Road between 4pm and 6pm. “We expect that due to the time of day there would have been a number of people travelling this road toward Beachlands, Whitford or Maraetai, who may have seen this group pulled over on the side of the road,” says detective senior sergeant Darrell Harpur. “One man got out of the vehicle while the rest of the occupants of the vehicle took the victim to the Takanini Accident and Emergency Centre. “We would like to hear from anyone who saw this group at any point while in Maraetai or while driving along Whitford-Maraetai Road. “Someone may have seen a man with a backpack or a firearm on the side of the road and we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen that,” says Mr Harpur. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Operation Lavender police investigation team on phone 261-1300, or to provide information anonymously, free phone Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.

GROWING COMPANY: Regional directors of CrestClean in South and East Auckland, Viky and Nileshna Narayan, won the business excellence in marketing award at the seventh annual BNZ-Indian Newslink Business Awards; right, director of Physio Revolution and winner of the young entrepreneur of the year prize, Ritika Bhargava, says she’s come a long way since first arriving as a student in 2006. PUNKY comedienne and corporate entertainer Michele A’Court kept everyone in good spirits, including Prime Minister John Key, at the seventh annual BNZ-Indian Newslink Business Awards. Some 900 business professionals gathered at Sky City Convention Centre late last year with plenty of politicians to celebrate the successes of the Indian business community in New Zealand. And it was not only Mr Key and Mayor Len Brown who guests queued up to have selfie photos with, but also MPs Winston Peters, Judith Collins, David Cunliffe, Phil Goff, David Shearer, Melissa Lee, and India’s High Commissioner Ravi Thapar, who all happily obliged. The entertaining awards evening showcased achievers in various categories of business includ-
ing manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, consultants and qualified professionals of Indian origin. Back from having met with Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, at the G20 Summit in Brisbane, Mr Key said there were bright prospects for higher levels of engagement with India. “The Indian business community in New Zealand are effective partners in building our relationship. Winning the business excellence in marketing award were Viky and Nileshna Narayan, who purchased the CrestClean franchise in 2005. They now oversee the operations of 75 franchises and 160 personnel providing commercial cleaning services for more than 350 customers in South and East Auckland. “Our competitive edge comes from investing in our people, says Mr Narayan. “We’re only as good as our last
clean, so we really focus on training and supporting our staff. Though I’m part of a national franchise, I’m a local business. Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing tool in the industry. Walking away with the best young entrepreneur of the year award was Ritika Bhargava, director of Physio Revolution Ltd. After training as a physiotherapist and working at Peak Pilates, the 26-year-old took a leap of faith and started her own practice. “It’s been a tough journey but well worth it, says the young prizewinner, also an advanced Pilates instructor, sports nutrition consultant and the national powerlifting champion in the under-47 class. “When I first came here as a student in 2006 with no one to even pick me up from the airport, I wouldn’t have dreamt that someday I would have my own practice at three locations with eight peo-
ple working with me, she says. Starting a physiotherapy business at a time when there were changes in ACC policy was risky, but the young entrepreneur known to do the hard slog used creative solutions apart from social media, online booking and networking with organisations to grow from strength to strength. Saif Shaikh, director of Immigration Advice NZ Ltd, one of the leading immigration advisors at the black-tie gala, summed up the evening by saying: “This is a great annual event which provides an opportunity for the extended business community to come together and hear some amazing success stories. “It’s an excellent forum for meeting like-minded business people. “Having the prime minister attend the awards function is a wonderful way of acknowledging the contribution of the Indian community to New Zealand.
AUCKLANDERS are urged to carefully manage all outdoor fires. A restricted fire season for rural areas is still in place which allows lighting of outdoor fires on rural land, but a permit is required for fires in the open air. A total fire ban is in place for all Hauraki Gulf islands. The hot and dry summer means risks of vegetation fires are higher, so people need to be vigilant around their properties, clearing easily flammable fuel such as dry leaves and debris, says the Auckland Council. It’s issuing fire permits for rural zones free of charge, but people are advised to plan ahead as they take three to five days. “Conditions are very warm, dry and windy for this time of year and last week there were a number of fire incidents around the region, says principal rural fire officer Bryan Cartelle. The council’s rural fire team advises people to be aware of the conditions and check before lighting outdoor fires in urban areas as well, including any non-gas barbecues. For information on fire safety and tips, phone the council on 301-0101, or refer online to aucklandcouncil/ruralfire.govt.nz.

ABBY Adams likes to manipulate people’s emotions. The Howick College student with a literary bent finds herself playing with words and transporting readers to situations and places they have never been to. “I like to make them feel certain things, says Tabby, who achieved the highest mark in New Zealand and the Pacific region in last year’s International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) writing examination for year 11 pupils. High school students have the opportunity each year to sit a range of external exams developed by the University of New South Wales. The optional ICAS exams are designed to assess students’ ability
in computer skills, English, maths, science, spelling and writing. Tabby, who’s an ace at debating, netball and playing the piano, says: “I like creative writing from a historical viewpoint. “I can envision scenes so clearly in my mind that it’s easy to put it on paper. The tragedy of war and the plight of shell-shocked soldiers have fired the imagination of the young writer as she’s used them as a backdrop in her stories. “I’ve written about the devastating impact of war with the loss of life that was astounding, says the girl who likes to be left alone with her thoughts. Tabby finds it fascinating to wind the clock back to the time slavery ruled society. She reveals that the subject of
racism has provided fodder for stories she’s penned on apartheid. Oscillating between reality and fiction, Tabby continues to explore and evoke a rush of emotions, be it fear, pain, hatred, conflict or an impending sense of danger, through the characters she creates. The ICAS exam last year offered a choice of proverbs for students to explore. Tabby wove a captivating narrative using the underlined message of a good turn deserves another. The nail-biting story was written in just an hour. “Find a balance between what you love and enjoy, and write about something you’re passionate about, says the award-winning student, who also has a distinction and high-distinction in ICAS exams in previous years.

Zoo vehicle gets Doris on move

TRANSPORTING animals and people is easier for Auckland Zoo with sponsorship for three new vehicles. Mazda NZ has become a principal partner with the zoo, supplying a Mazda 3, and BT-50 and CX-9 models to relocate or release animals, and transport staff and equipment for fieldwork. The zoo’s ectotherms team was the first to road-test the new alligator-themed CX9. It enabled them to chaperone one of the zoo’s five alligators, Doris, to a Northland facility and settle her in with an amorous male, says the ectotherms team leader, Don McFarlane. The spacious seven-seater was ideal for the team effort and, “being such a beautiful beast, we felt it only appropriate to officially name her [the vehicle] Doris. The motor vehicle company has supported the zoo since 2012 and zoo director Jonathan Wilcken says it, at a practical level, is helping drive conservation efforts throughout the region and further afield. “The zoo is proud to be involved in some 28 native species projects throughout New Zealand – from bats, birds, reptiles and invertebrates to predator control, he says. “For North Island projects that we’re actively involved in, having a reliable fleet of vehicles for staff to use is absolutely essential. Mazda NZ vehicle sales and marketing general manager Glenn Harris says the company is proud its vehicles play such

Works blocking traffic flow I DROVE down Pakuranga Road on the afternoon of January 6 and saw there are works going on at the site of BP’s proposed new service station (Times, January 8). It was strange to see they have a warning vehicle parked outside on the road blocking off the inside lane of the highway while work is carried out on site.
Strangling weeds
THE money spent needlessly by Mayor Len Brown on a bookcase door would have been better spent by the Auckland Council’s parks and reserves department on making the Rotary Walkway look more respectable. In most parts, the bank that runs down to it is a disgraceful tangle of weeds. Our property extends part-way down the bank to the walkway – roughly the top half of the bank is ours and the lower half is the council’s responsibility. At the time the walkway was constructed, council employees planted some shrubs on the bank below the boundary of our property. Since then we have done a huge amount of work in clearing the bank on our side of the boundary and planting many new plants. Since the path was constructed there have been a number of weedspraying events, the last of which happened perhaps nearly a year ago. The council has not returned to weed its part of that bank so it’s now choked with intrusive weeds. The ratepayer-owned plants are now choked with weeds, while the weeds are flourishing.
Is this not supposed to be a new service station? If so, why is there a need to block off one lane whilst workers are on site? I would have thought a good service station site would have good clear access both going in and out. Obviously not. What on earth is going to happen
I doubt they could now be sprayed without destroying the plants also. In essence, they were a complete waste of ratepayer money as they do nothing to beautify the area in their present situation. Meanwhile, our part of the bank is suffering from weeds that continually expand into our territory or shed their seeds on to our property as well, undoing all the work that we have done. It is the council’s duty to maintain the walkway in a proper manner and to a decent standard while ensuring its activities do no harm to private property. This it fails to do. Alan and Lynne Gautier, Pakuranga
Brighter Christmas
AFTER 20 years, Kmart and our charity partner the Salvation Army are humbled yet again by the amazing generosity of New Zealanders who give to the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal at Christmas time. The people of East Auckland should be proud of their generosity. They have banded together to ensure that Christmas was happy, not just for their own families, but for the entire community, donating an impressive 3456 gifts to the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal at
when they get a new station up and running? Are they going to have to block off the inside lane every time a vehicle wanting to use this facility arrives or departs? It makes one wonder at the wisdom of the planners who have given the go ahead for this site. Dennis Lang, Sunnyhills
Kmart Botany. The appeal is such a special tradition for so many families and the support that it receives each year is just heart-warming. We know how much it means to those who hit hard times, to know that people out there care and are willing to support in any way that they can during Christmas. As times are changing, the appeal too evolved this past Christmas to make it even easier for Kiwis to support those less fortunate. In addition to 42,273 gifts donated nationally, shoppers could also contribute online or at Kmart registers, with $9469 being raised. On behalf of the entire Kmart team and our friends at the Salvation Army, I would like to thank each and every person who donated to the appeal. You are the shining stars of this festive season. TUDENTS from Pakuranga College’s Pegasus Unit have been given a rare look at how Auckland’s top classical musicians practise their craft. The Pegasus Unit provides specialist teaching in physical education, music therapy, drama, science, art, and food technology to pupils with an intellectual disability or special needs.
Four of its students were invited backstage to meet Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) musicians before listening to their open music rehearsal on November 13. Pegasus Unit pupils Andrew Hubble, Jason Ou, Katrina Lee and David Taylor joined other blind and visually impaired adults in the Auckland Town Hall’s green room. They had the chance to handle the
APO performers’ instruments and talk to the musicians during morning tea. Pegasus Unit students are aged 13-21 and have the opportunity to study subjects by correspondence, attend tertiary courses at Manukau Institute of Technology, and take part in work experience. Unit teacher Sarah Williamson says the pupils are given the chance to explore their individual talents
and interests, including in music. “Andrew Hubble is an incredible drummer and Jason Ou is an amazing pianist who also plays the guitar and clarinet,” she says. “This [meeting the APO] is a really special experience for them.” APO sponsor and Bayleys Realty Group general manager Greg Hornblow enjoyed the day also, saying it was great to see the positive impact

Homes are where the hearts are The Our Homes TODAY editor, Marianne Kelly, looks back on 2014 JANUARY A NATIONWIDE project aimed at making rental housing safer to live in, especially for children and the elderly, got under way with ‘warrant of ďŹ tness’ ďŹ eld tests. Home assessment experts tested 25 rental properties in Auckland, using criteria such as warmth (or ability to effectively heat), dryness, mould and dampness, injury risk, sanitation, basic state-of-repair and living needs. Meanwhile home owners planning to indulge in some DIY work over the summer months were reminded to check the rules in advance to make sure their project didn’t cause problems down the track. Tim Weight, Auckland Council’s building control manager, said well before people got their tools out, they should check if the planned DIY work needed either building or resource consent and what the relevant legislation was. FEBRUARY JOHNNY Leung of Whitford’s Zen Garden described how the humble bamboo plant was used in an exhaustive number of ways throughout the world over the centuries and was a surprisingly
FEBRUARY: Bamboo is used as a feature at Zen Garden, Whitford. Photography supplied versatile building material. Strong and exible – bending in the wind - bamboo was used for ooring, walls, roofs and bridges. Even 50-60 storey high-rises in Hong Kong, Macau and China, relied on bamboo which made excellent scaffolding, he said. On the interior design front, Sarah Gregory, Resene colour consultant said digital technology had resulted in an abundance of design options for 2014, making the use of wallpaper a popular trend for the coming season. Wallpaper, she said was “no longer your bog standard printed owersâ€?, but one underlying theme was nostalgia with many new wallpapers taking their inspiration from the 30s, 50s, 70s and 80s. We also found out that residential housing sales volumes were on the wane. In line with the

trend throughout the Auckland region, the number of dwellings sold in the Eastern Beaches area fell by 12 per cent in January compared with the same time last year, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand ďŹ gures. MARCH WE DISCOVERED that Kiwi women were leading the DIY (do it yourself) charge with close to half claiming they did most of the DIY tasks in their homes, according to an Australasian survey. Results from the National DIY Report, commissioned by the 3M Company, showed that 48 per cent of New Zealand women said they did most of the DIY tasks at home and were passionate about decorating and DIY. In fact the chores once considered the
man’s domain, such as planting ower beds, painting and hanging artwork, were rapidly becoming part of the female repertoire. But American farmer Joel Salatin urged Kiwis to get into the home kitchen, meet a farmer, go to a farmers’ market, and start cutting out parts of the foodscape, such as supermarkets and processors, who were disempowering people from their food. “Many problems,â€? he said, “are created by our own innovation. We want food that is shelf stable, not that it tastes better. It’s all about sterile food that won’t rot.â€? As people extricated themselves from the system, over time food became an unknown, a culinary ignorance developed and the result was fear – “we are creating a population that fears food.â€? Back on the home front,
we took a trip to The Brae, an enclave of 12 architect-designed homes marking the start of a new housing development at Pine Harbour, Beachlands, emulating the iconic Kiwi boat shed. Key building partner Jalcon Homes had already sold four of the 12 initial houses off the plans. And we were able to reassure people who wanted to plant the grass berms outside their property that they may be allowed to. Those who had gone ahead and outed the law anyway would be able to relax, knowing that for the moment they could keep their gardens planted on public land. The council’s CCO (councilcontrolled organisation) Auckland Transport said it was reviewing its policy and guidelines for planting vegetation on grass berms.

1949, the prices of few household appliances were tracked in what was then called the retail prices index. The ones that were came into the ‘household ironmongery and brushware’ category. From 1924, prices were collected for washing boards, clothes-wringers, and brooms.
April WE LEARNED about a zero waste target for 2040 with new rules in place to cover the way super-city residents disposed of their household waste. Changes to Auckland Council’s solid waste bylaw were designed to encourage householders to recycle and compost more and the bylaw also laid the groundwork and guidelines for an organic collection service planned to start in 2015. We wondered how Easter was celebrated in one of the world’s most celebrated households, the White House in Washington DC, USA. We found that on the previous Easter Monday, 30,000 children and parents from throughout the country gathered on the Executive Mansion’s South Lawn for a day of festivities, including the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, a race where children push an egg through the grass with a long-handled spoon. In England, Germany and other countries children traditionally rolled eggs down hillsides. Back in the super-city, efforts to increase housing supply were on track, according to figures for the first four months of the Auckland Housing Accord with 3599 new sections created and dwellings consented. More new dwellings were consented in the 12 months to the end of January than in any 12-month period since September 2007, although still only half the previous peak in 2004.
July
june: A 61 hectare block of land has come on the market (boundary lines are indicative only). Photography supplied May RAY and Jill Bosher put the last block of an original 121 hectare farm in Flat Bush School Road up for international tender. The 61 hectare site, grazing more than 700 sheep, was placed strategically between the multimillion-dollar Regis Park rural development off Ormiston Road and intensive residential development underway on the north-western side of Murphy’s Road. With Kiwi television viewers moving into a new era, switching off the last analogue transmitters and making New Zealand totally digital, we looked at the history of television development. Studies, we found, were showing that with
smartphones and tablets some young adults had never watched much television. They were more likely to view TV-like content on YouTube while on the move than watching television at home. Many young adults preferred to use their laptops or tablets. June WE PERUSED the way Statistics New Zealand used its CPI (consumers’ price index) to track the path of modern conveniences in the home and found it had tracked household appliances since 1949. Over time, appliance prices had fallen relative to average earnings, making them affordable for households. Before
WE FOUND it ironic that the cost of buying plants, flowers and gardening supplies was lower than the general CPI (cost price index), yet the cost of watering them was much higher. Statistics New Zealand figures showed that from the 2002 June quarter, the cost of metered water which super-city residents paid for, climbed more quickly than the CPI. However, a scenario outlined in Auckland Council’s Low Carbon Auckland Action Plan painted the super-city in 2040 as the vibrant home to close to 2.5 million people and celebrated as a global city of choice in which to live and do business. A substantial portion of Auckland’s energy would be supplied from renewable sources and the widespread presence of renewable technologies, such as wind and solar generators, would visibly demonstrate the city’s energy resilience. But back in 2014, new builds coming onto the market were possibly contributing to flattening prices in Flat Bush. QV valuer Bruce Wiggins said a number of builders/developers who bought land on terms at about
the same time were completing construction, with the new builds appearing on the market at similar times, creating an oversupply and possibly affecting values. August A NUMBER of special landforms or sites of geological interest in the south-east were included in a schedule of outstanding features in the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan. For example, some of the best exposures of rhyolitic ignimbrite flow deposits from the centre of the North Island were found on the Pakuranga side of the Tamaki estuary. And cannon-ball concretions at Musick Point and an anticline (fold of stratified rock) at Eastern Beach were noted as the best examples in the Auckland region. Meanwhile a survey showed that new house owners were more satisfied with their house and builder if they had input into the design. Consequently the Certified Builders Association introduced its Certified Plans service giving its members access to 24 different plans for consumers to choose from. We visited John Wadsworth at his Pakuranga home where he had invented a simple home ventilation system that could be installed by a competent DIYer or trades person and at a considerably lower cost than other sophisticated versions on the market.

was up for auction and, while it boasted all the security features any high-profile politician could hope for, it was designed around the stunning view and was surprisingly informal. We found, also to our surprise, that a key factor when buying a refrigerator was whether it matched the current kitchen decor. A survey, conducted by retail finance market researcher Canstar Blue, showed that just over a third of Kiwis surveyed (36 per cent) took the energy rating of their fridge into account, compared with three-quarters of fridge owners who bought their appliance based on its ability to match the colour, brand or general appearance of their existing kitchen appliances.
deployed to create clever hinged and moveable pods resulting in the ability to cater to those wanting to flex their culinary muscles in a designer kitchen, or be reassembled into a destination for a relaxed movie night with the girls.
WE DECIDED to track the progress of radio and found, in contrast with flat-panel television sets, home theatre systems and tablet computers keeping people entertained in their homes and on the move in the 21st century, radio was the mid-20th century progression from 19th century singalongs around the piano. Meanwhile, with an indicative capital value increase of 35 per cent, Howick ward residential ratepayers were sitting around the middle of revaluation rates and slightly higher than the average 33 per cent increase across the supercity, according to Auckland Council’s three-yearly general property valuation. But the council’s registered valuer Peter McKay said it was important to remember that the property revaluation did not determine the total amount of rates collected by the council, rather it helped determine each ratepayer’s share of rates. However, rather than coming from rates, paying for rubbish disposal by bin lift and being charged each time a bin was emptied was on the agenda for super-city residents, thanks to the use of radio frequency identification tags. And we discovered a house that could be transformed and configured to suit any Kiwi occasion at Wynyard Quarter in Central Auckland. Modern architectural thinking and innovative engineering was
October WE TRAVELLED to the Pohutukawa Coast to find an architect’s vision from the early 1900s had been taken on board by a Beachlands couple and implemented with panache in their award-winning home. Darryl and John Lynn’s house won a gold medal in the $600,000-$1 million category of the Auckland and Northland Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year awards. Its minimalistic lines lay comfortably in 21st century architecture, yet the man who provided the basis for the Lynn’s brief, American architect, interior designer, writer and educator, Frank Lloyd Wright, lived between June 1867 and April 1959. At the other end of the super-city, a simple, but elegant coastal family home won a national design award for Auckland designer, David Maurice, of David Maurice Architectural. He took out the residential compact new home – up to 150 square metres section of the 2014 ADNZ (Architectural Designers New Zealand) Resene Architectural Awards, for a house at Red Beach on Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast. Astrid Anderson,
November STATISTICS New Zealand, which collected prices for 31 types of fresh fruit and vegetables each week for the consumers’ price index (CPI), showed how events beyond our shores affected the prices paid for fresh produce. In an article, Fresh fruit and vegetable prices — our global connection, Stats NZ looked at the international influence exerted on prices through the nation’s imports and exports and explained factors such as freight costs, overseas growing conditions and weather events, bio-security issues and legislation. Meanwhile unprecedented demand for information about new property valuations caused Auckland Council’s online service
DECEMBER: Flat Bush architectural designer Cameron Moore is running his own practice while writing a book, teaching tertiary students, and completing a PhD. Photography Wayne Martin ADNZ general manager, said compact homes were very much the latest trend, “and to be honest it is about time”. Back on the Pohutukawa Coast former Justice Minister Judith Collins and her family were tearing themselves away from their home of seven years. Their six-bedroom house at Omana, Maraetai Beach,
to collapse. However property owners started receiving notices of valuation in the mail and we discovered valuation increases across the south-east ranged from +15% to +45%. December HOUSEWORK, we discovered, was making life a misery for super-city residents and in some cases causing domestic spats. Asked in a survey who they perceived to have the cleanest house in Aotearoa, they voted for Prime Minister John Key, followed by fashion designer Dame Trelise Cooper. But celebs, Kiwi model Rachel Hunter, socialite Sally Ridge, and film director Sir Peter Jackson, scored dismally in the tidy homes stakes. Flat Bush architectural designer Cameron Moore told us designing homes was about how people lived and what was most important to them. The year ended on a high note with spring residential real estate prices bouncing back, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures. The Eastern Beaches median residential price was up 10 per cent in November to $801,500 compared with $730,500 the same time the year before. New Year greetings and thanks to our valued advertisers for their ongoing contribution and to our loyal readers, with best wishes for a good and prosperous New Year. Happy 2015 to you all!

UNFORGETTABLE: The All Black’s victory in the Rugby World Cup puts 2011 among New Zealand’s best years in sport.

Year could be our best yet OPINION, By Daniel Silverton

015 is going to be a bumper 12 months in international sport, and has the potential to be the best year in New Zealand’s sporting history. Just around the corner is the Cricket World Cup, to be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia – the first time the tournament has come to our shores since 1992. With the Black Caps in superlative form, this year represents our best chance to make it past the semi-finals for the first time, if not win the elusive prize. In May, one of the biggest sporting events in the world will be in our backyard – the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, featuring junior talent from the top footballing nations. By then, football could be rid-
www.times.co.nz/classifieds
ing a wave of popularity, with the Wellington Phoenix primed to make a deep run in the A-League competition. The Silver Ferns face a mammoth task in August, if last year’s form is anything to go by, at the Netball World Cup in Sydney. But they’re definitely a chance in what is essentially a three-team battle. Then in September-October, the All Blacks will attempt to become the first team to win back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles. In between, Lydio Ko will continue her charge to become the number one ranked women’s golfer. In the NRL, the Warriors can hopefully capitalise on the Kiwis’ success in rugby league’s Four Nations, in their first full season under much-touted coach Andrew
McFadden. The NZ Breakers are also poised to add to their dynasty with a possible fourth ANBL title in five years. And these are just the events and teams we are well aware of. Along the way there will be unknown athletes and surprise feats that come out of nowhere to become part of our rich sporting record. The Rugby World Cup victory in 2011, coupled with the Warriors making the NRL grand final, have that year at the top of my list for the best we’ve had to date. 1992 is also a standout, with New Zealand’s efforts in making the Cricket World Cup semi-finals and some memorable performances at the Barcelona Olympics. 1984 also has a victorious hue
courtesy of eight gold medals at the Los Angeles Olympics, and retaining the Bledisloe Cup with a 25-24 victory in the deciding third test in Sydney. And 1960 and 1964 will always have a special place, with the Olympic gold medal deeds of Peter Snell, Murray Halberg, and Helmer Pederson and Earle Wells, and the bronze-winning Barry Magee, John Davies and Marise Chamberlain boosting those year’s claims. But with scheduling and the form of national teams aligning this year, 2015 could surpass all of those in a big way, if results are favourable. So saddle up, it’s going to be a hell of a ride.

NZ selection caps big year By Daniel Silverton
F
ENCIBLES United is celebrating its first national men’s football representative to have come through the club’s development system. Sione Fa’apoi, of Howick, has been named as a defender in the New Zealand under-17 squad for the Oceania Championship which starts in Samoa this week. New Zealand has been drawn against the host nation, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Caledonia and Cook Islands in its pool. Competing also in the two-week long tournament are Vanuatu, Tonga, Tahiti, Solomon Islands, and American Samoa. The winner of the final will qualify for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Chile in October. Sione, 16, has played for Fencibles since he was seven years old, and turned out for the under-19, senior reserves and the premier teams last season. His national age-group selection caps a rapid rise in the past year for the Pakuranga College student, in largely a new position. Predominantly a striker, he was asked to play centre-back during a trial for the national talent centre squad, and excelled in the role. “I haven’t really been involved in any other rep teams before that, he told the Times. “I started improving a lot last year and trained really hard. He was put into the quasi-national Wanderers SC team for NZ Football’s ASB Youth League, and his performances in that compe-

tition saw him picked for the NZ under-17s. “I was having a kick around with my mates and I checked my emails, he says. “I saw my name in the team and I was so happy. “It was my goal to make it. There was a lot of relief off my chest. I want to help my team and play the best that I can to try to get us to the world cup. Fencibles director of coaching Roger Wilkinson says the selection is reward for Sione’s diligence to his sport. “He is dedicated and works very hard, says Wilkinson. “He has a great left foot and will do everything you tell him. He’s very committed to making himself the best he can be. Accordingly, Sione could be one of the rare players who progress from national age-group teams to bigger things. “He needs to use this to motivate himself to keep going, says Wilkinson. “Making the under-17s is only the start. With his attitude he really has the potential to push on. Fencibles chairman Paul Burns says: “Sione’s selection makes Fencibles United AFC incredibly proud and it’s the ultimate reward for his absolute commitment and the high standards he sets for himself. Sione’s humility and attitude combined with his obvious ability make him a role model and highly respected member of our club. NZ kicks off its campaign against Fiji tomorrow, with the final on January 27.
