An old home and cottage sledged down a Bucklands Beach slope onto a barge at the end of last year have made it safely to their new abode in Mangonui in the Far North. Margot Horton spied the buildings while visiting Mangonui at Christmas and sent this photo to the Times. Tim Lloyd and his crew of ex-commercial fishermen and handymen took ownership of the houses that were offered for free on condition they were

removed from their original site which has been subdivided into four sections. The larger, double storey house was built in 1988 and the early 1900s cottage behind it was built by Auckland magnate Alfred Buckland (for whom Bucklands Beach is named) for his daughter. The houses are now sited on Mr Lloyd’s farm near Doubtless Bay in Mangonui in Northland and he said he just intended to “live in them”.

Mum admits assault A

Howick woman who told media she was bashed for speaking Maori outside a bar in the early hours of New Year’s Day has pleaded guilty to assault. Shona Maiden admitted the charge when she appeared in the Manukau District Court on Monday. The court confirmed to the Times Maiden is scheduled to appear for sentencing on March 3. Police investigated an incident that occurred outside the 123 Karaoke bar in Meadowlands, Howick on Friday, January 1 and a decision was made to prosecute the 46-year-old female and a 43-year-old male. As part of the investigation, police viewed CCTV footage of the alleged incident. The version of events given by Maiden was not substantiated by the footage, police said in a statement last week. The police will not be making any further comment as the mat-

ter is before the courts. Last week the Times reported a Howick mum claimed she was assaulted on New Year’s Day after leaving a pub because she bid farewell in Maori, according to a media outlet. The NZ Herald reported that single mother Maiden was heading home after celebrating New Year’s Eve with friends at her local bar – 123 Casino Karaoke Bar, in Meadowlands – when she was assaulted. She told the newspaper she lost five teeth after she was punched repeatedly in the head by a man who angrily asked why she was speaking Te Reo. She repeated the claims on the television news as well. At the bar’s closing time, Ms Maiden, who is of European and Maori descent, claimed she said “ka kite ano” (see you later) to people standing outside. The mother-of-four said a man then

swore and yelled at her, questioning why a “palagi” (Samoan for European) would use such words, the Herald reported. Ms Maiden told reporters she responded, telling the man to “f*** off.” He then punched her several times, she claimed. Ms Maiden said the man who allegedly attacked her looked to be of Pacific descent. She went with a friend to Mid-

dlemore Hospital for treatment. “I’ve lost five teeth, my top plate is cracked ... my lip is out there, I can’t eat yet,” she told the paper. “I just burst into tears when I saw in the mirror that I had no teeth.” Her father, John Maiden, is upset at what happened to his daughter and says he wants something done about safety in the area around the bar, the NZ Herald reported. “I’m just bloody angry.” A man was killed in an alleged hit-and-run in the carpark outside the karaoke bar in October 2014. He was out celebrating his wife’s birthday. Father of three and popular sports coach Richard Samuels who lived at Maraetai Beach with his wife of 20 years, Alaina, and their children Rosalie, Dominic and Rueben – was reportedly hit by a car during a confrontation with another man in the carpark near the 123 Casino Karaoke Bar.

The Clarks found that nothing was chromosomally wrong with either of them. Mr Clark says as a last resort the couple felt they should head to the USA where success rates were higher from younger, healthier and proven donors, plus the donors were paid. They found a specialist at the Centre for Reproductive Health at Nashville, Tennessee who boasted an 86 per cent success rate, one of the highest in the country. They left on January 10, having found a proven donor aged 28 who would provide 12 embryos from her first cycle of which the

hen Louise and Darren Clark embarked on a six-week visit to Nashville USA at the start of this year, they were ready for an adventure, not just of the tourist type. The Botany Downs couple was also on a serious mission to start a family. In October 2014 the Times spoke to the couple who wanted to spread the message about the need for young Kiwi women to consider donating their eggs to help childless couples like them. Unlike in the USA where young women can be paid $5000 to $100,000 for a donated egg, New Zealand’s advisory committee on reproductive technology (Acart) has put guidelines in place to guard against birth becoming a commodity. However, the Clarks were determined to pursue their dream of conceiving a child in New Zealand rather than beat a well-worn path to the USA. Mrs Clark says 120 women responded to their appeal although not all were compatible. Arrangements with two acceptable donors fell through and then, tragically, Mrs Clark had a miscarriage with the third embryo. “It was gutting, to know

Clarks would share half with another childless couple. “That’s a big selling point for us, that she’s proven,” Mrs Clark says. Mr Clark says sharing a cycle is a bonus. “It’s good for those out to achieve a dream but it’s out of reach financially when we can share the costs with another couple.” In comparison with the eye-watering costs of the treatment at USA West Coast clinics, the Nashville exercise will cost the Clarks about $50,000, including accommodation, fares and other spending money. Mrs Clark started drugs to time her cycle with the donor’s in mid-December. The embryo is programmed to be transferred on January 24-25 and a heart beat is expected three-four weeks later. When they return to New Zealand on February

27 after ongoing monitoring by the USA clinic, they expect to know the sex and how many babies Mrs Clark is carrying. There is a 40 per cent chance of twins which is welcomed by the Clarks who want a family of more than one child. The couple say they have no regrets about trying for a child first in New Zealand because if they had gone straight to the USA they would have always wondered. However, they are pleased that the American

What a load of rubbish People have been dumping their rubbish on a vacant lot in Ormiston By Farida Master

ing New Zealand need to manage their rentals better also, so dumping doesn’t happen.” Another concerned citizen Gayle Unkovich rightly pointed out: “Imagine what it’s going to be like when the council starts charging us all for rubbish bags or bins.” On being contacted Ian Stupple manager Waste Solutions, Auckland Council said: “Illegal dumping is a highly undesirable behaviour with negative social and financial impacts, and costs ratepayers more than $1 million every year to clean up. “The council has introduced a range of new measures to stop the practice including a new enforcement team for investigating incidents, and changes to the way we collect inorganics. Instead of collecting inorganic items from the street, we now collect from inside people’s property boundaries, so we can reduce mess and hazards in our streets. “The inorganic collection changes began in September last year, and we have been encouraged to see illegal dumping volumes drop across the region, compared to the same period last year. “If illegal dumping is on council land, council is responsible for clearing it. In this case, the land is owned privately, so the owners will be responsible for clearing the rubbish.”

T

he rubbish is piling up. Old toys, sofas, mattresses, TVs, building waste, strollers, cardboard boxes, rubbish bags, cuts a sorry picture in a spanking new township, the Ormiston Town Centre, slated to be the most exciting and innovative urban development in New Zealand. When Times photographer Wayne Martin first spotted the big section of land at the corner of Pencaitland Drive and Ormiston Road, that sits across Pak’nSav Ormiston, being converted into a dump yard, he was appalled with people showing complete disregard for the environment. As he started shooting pictures, he spotted a truck and four or five cars draw up to dump their rubbish there. However, on spotting a keen lens man, they took a quick u-turn and drove away. The owner of the prime property was reportedly shocked when he returned from his Christmas holiday to see the large section being used for illegal dumping without his consent. As the story goes to press, we witnessed the crew of Rapid Rent a Fence hurriedly cordoning off the area with temporary fencing, which will be around for at least 12 months. porary fencing company said they got a call from the owner of the section saying he’d like to hire their services to put up the fence. “I didn’t realise how bad it was till I came here and saw it,” said Mr Yeoman. Once the fencing is done, the owner will reportedly have a couple of trucks to remove the rubbish. People in the neighbourhood said the land belongs to McDonalds. When the video of the illegal dumping of rubbish was posted on the Times facebook page, it got plenty of feedback. Shanell Rickard Simms responded saying: “I drove past the place two weeks ago and seen quite a bit of rubbish, then went past again today and BOOM, looks like a rubbish tip!

How embarrassing for the new Pak’n Save directly across the road! We actually witnessed a guy with his little kids, who were helping unload their rubbish, and collecting too.” Carol Hill was enraged as she commented saying:“It’s disgusting - have people no pride or respect? Same thing happened over in Mangere not that long ago. The people who are responsible for this - ask yourself - would you like to see this happen on a section next door to you! I think not! A regular reader of the Times Ro Harris shared: “Saw another large pile forming road side down from Brookby School towards Alfriston as we drove past today...grrrrrr... council needs to bring back in organics. New town centre underway The Ormiston Town Centre under development at Flat Bush is expected to be more than a shopping centre. Once complete the 19 hectare development will include retail, cafes, restaurants, commercial office space, medical facilities, apartments, town houses, a library and multi-use facility and an aquatic centre. Auckland Council owns 90 per cent of the town centre land. The council and the local board’s contribution is about $220 million for transport improvements, public open space, water and wastewater, the library and multiuse facility and an aquatic centre. The town centre will be based around a traditional main street. It will be compact and pedestrianfriendly and have strong ties to the environment and Barry Curtis Park. Initial work in the stage one area is underway. A 6000 square metre Pak’n’Save supermarket opened last November and an initial 63 terraced houses will be completed early this year (2016). The private sector is contributing an estimated $2.8 billion. Several developers are involved, including Todd Property which is developing the town centre, the Hugh Green Group, Howick Parklands and Green Land Investment. The project is expected to be completed between 2019 and 2021.

Where are our brightest going? As school leavers ready themselves to tackle the next stage of their young lives. The Times asked the student leaders of south-eastern secondary schools three questions: What I learnt from school? What I want to study at university? Where do I see myself five years from now? Botany Downs Secondary College

Howick College Georgia Beasley, Ingham House leader

Aryaman Taore, Head boy ■■ At school we were told to sit down for lunch for 15 minutes, or we were told to solve the value of x in maths. For five years I never understood why. Yet now as I head into the busy world I’d do anything for a 15-minute break; or to find the x number of friends I want to meet once again. Like the gorgeous Kerryn Higham once said: “School has not only taught us what the text books say, but also skills we will carry with us for life.” ■■ Tertiary study - I am an Indian boy, so ask my parents. Jokes apart, I would like to pursue business and technology innovation. ■■ I would like to revolutionise a wide variety of fields in technology and medicine.

Hannah Bennett, Head girl ■■ I learnt to be open and willing to try new things. There are many different opportunities in life. But it’s often the opportunities

that are out of our comfort zone and not the ones we would usually take, that make us grow the most as people. ■■ Tertiary study - chemical and materials engineering and commerce conjoint. ■■ I want to work at an engineering firm.

■■ The most valuable thing was to question everything. No matter how strange, silly, or irrelevant my questions were, teachers always took the time to answer. Through this, my curiosity became a pathway for my learning. ■■ Tertiary study - veterinary medicine, zoology or natural sciences. ■■ I see myself making a difference, using my passion for animals and the natural environment to educate people on the importance of conservation. I want to travel the world, experience its diversity, shedding light on some of the darker issues of our planet and giving the public reasons to save it.

Protect your eyes like you protect your skin When you purchase your new glasses from Eyes of Howick, you can rest assured that your eyes are being protected with the latest in anti-reflective technology with our Crizal family of lenses. For an increasingly transparent lens experience, Crizal coatings ensure perfectly clear vision by attacking eyeglasses’ five worst enemies: • Glare, caused by reflections, especially at night, or when working on the computer. • Smudges, which diffuse light as it hits the lens and blur your vision. • Scratches, which reduce visual comfort. • Dust, which can be an obstacle to sharp vision. • Water drops, which distort vision. These lenses are also the first in the world to gain an E-SPF UV protection rating. This is an index which certifies the UV protection brought to you by both sides of a lens and was inspired by the protection index used to rate skincare and sunscreen product efficiency against ultraviolet light. The higher the E-SPF the greater the level of UV protection. E-SPF indicates the overall UV protection provided by your lenses, to your eyes and to the sensitive skin around your eyes. All lenses are not equal in terms of UV protection. It is crucial to consider UV protection when you choose your lens treatment and with this new reference index in health care, you now have a clear and objective measure regarding UV protection performance of your eyeglasses and sunglasses. For example with E-SPF = 25, your eyes

are 25 times better protected than without any protection. (E-SPF excludes direct eye exposure from around the lenses). This rating system is eligible for clear and photochromic lenses as well as for sunglasses, with values ranked from 2 to 25 for clear lenses, and up to 50+ for sun lenses. Your choice of Crizal coatings • Crizal UV Forte lenses provide an E-SPF of 25. With this lens you not only benefit from its clear, anti-reflective properties but it also blocks harmful ultraviolet light from both sides of the lens. • Crizal Prevencia has also been a welcome addition to our lens portfolio. This lens selectively blocks blue light waves from the sun, artificial lighting and digital devices – which have been shown to increase risk of cataract and macular degeneration. This also has an E-SPF of 25. • Crizal Sun is a coating which we can add to the back surface of your prescription sunglasses. This not only reduces reflected glare but also provides an E-SPF of 50+. Our Crizal coatings not only come with a 24 month manufacturing warranty but also a 12-month consumer scratch warranty. That’s right – even if you scratch your lenses accidently within 12 months of purchase we will replace them free of charge. What better way to ensure you have made the right choice for your eyes. Ask us today what coating would be best for your eyes and you will receive a free upgrade to Crizal Prevencia lenses. – Kristine Jensen, your local Optometrist.

As a result I have learnt that it is vital to take all the opportunities presented to us. Inadequacy along with the ‘right’ mind-set has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and explore new things. Through the opportunities I have been given, I have learnt about leadership, perseverance, good attitude and hard work, important qualities for in building character. ■■ Tertiary study – engineering which will be a good challenge and a great way to push myself. ■■ I will most likely enter the engineering industry, however I am open to changes. Looking to the future ➤➤from page 9

Macleans College Kieran Paterson, Head student ■■ School is all about preparing for the future, a ‘trial period’ of life. You make mistakes which you can learn from and therefore grow as an individual. On the sports field I have learnt to win and lose graciously. My time in the classroom has pushed me to great lengths in order to find my real passion and the most important thing is to not take anything for granted. School is only enjoyable if you put in the effort to get the most out of what is being offered. ■■ Tertiary study - a Bachelor of Business. ■■ I see myself in a business environment, working in management and marketing, hopefully in the sport industry.

Annaliese Wheeler, Head student ■■ School has taught me to make the most of opportuni-

ties and live life to the full. I have been blessed with many opportunities to learn, develop skills, meet people, and grow as an individual. With this comes a responsibility to serve and give back to others in any way that I can. Grades are a crucial part of education, yet it is equally important to value others, whether they are teachers, students, family, friends, or colleagues, people that matter most. ■■ Tertiary study - health science. ■■ My dream is to study medicine and become a doctor, working towards making a positive difference in public health.

Sancta Maria College Samantha Teinakore, Head girl ■■ Sancta Maria has taught me the importance of my faith and whakawhanaungatanga. Making connections and communicating enables you to grow mentally, physi-

cally and spiritually. Being approachable and supportive has been a key part of my head girl role. I’ve learnt to believe in myself. Having self-confidence is the driving force and is a power which can only be found within. ■■ Tertiary study – health science ■■ I want to go into paediatric oncology and own my own practice, also study for a PhD. In five years I hope to be regularly volunteering at Starship to get experience and give back as I was a Starship kid, and also go back to Sancta Maria to help mentor the students and show them that dreams are possible.

Paddy MacKenzie, Head boy ■■ Schooling over an exciting 13 years has given me the power of knowledge and understanding of our modern world. As head prefect I have learnt that being a leader isn’t about doing everything, it’s about using every person’s unique strengths to get things done in the most

precise and efficient ways possible. ■■ Teritiary study – engineering. ■■ I see myself working for an engineering firm and/or travelling the world on an OE celebrating being a graduate before starting work.

Edgewater College Janel Tolentino, Head girl ■■ Being at school taught me that nothing is handed to you, rather you must work hard to achieve your aspirations, to excel. Plus, it feels more rewarding that way. ■■ Tertiary study - conjoint Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Arts, majoring in sports and exercise science and double majoring in French and music. ■■ I always wanted to be a teacher, but I would like to see where else sports and exercise science, French and music could take me – a sports analyst in France would be truly exciting! ➤➤Turn to page 14

Experts In Our Field

Rest your bones in good hands Motorway traffic queues are fast becoming a distant memory for many patients of orthopaedic surgeon Mr Gary French thanks to his handy location at Ormiston Hospital. Having moved from his central Auckland location in 2009, Mr French founded his private practice, Ormiston Orthopaedics, at the local private hospital without any inkling as to how things would pan out. “We took a punt, but it’s worked exceptionally well!” says Mr French. “Patients from south and east Auckland areas were finding it increasingly difficult to get to appointments when I worked in the central city. “Now, getting to and from the hospital is much easier for patients and their friends and family/whanau to visit and offer support – which is so important. “It makes complete sense for people to seek treatment locally if such treatment is available, given the ever-increasing congestion on Auckland’s main transport routes,” says Mr French, himself a South Auckland resident. “I no longer find myself stuck in the car in traffic and it’s so convenient for me to drop in and check on patients either at the weekend or after hours.”

He says that the comfortable hospital environment contributes to the patients’ happiness and wellbeing. “Our patient surveys consistently produce outstanding results, and our patients are extremely satisfied. They say it’s like staying at a hotel, not a hospital!” What’s more, those with Southern Cross health insurance are finding orthopaedic care a lot more affordable now that Mr French is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider for primary hip and knee replacement surgery. “Previously, many people with limited cover chose to go on public hospital waiting lists despite having paid insurance premiums. “Now, as an affiliated provider, I can provide certainty of costs involved with hip and knee replacements and, as a result, most Southern Cross members with partial insurance cover now opt to have their surgery in the private sector. “It’s made a huge difference to the patients, and reduces the impact on the public hospital waiting lists.” Mr French’s practice at Ormiston Orthopaedics is largely focused on hip and knee joint replacement surgery, both primary and revision. He also performs knee arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruc-

He spent 18 years at Counties Manukau DHB treating bone and soft tissue cancer patients, and retired from this part of his practice in December 2011. After more than 20 years in orthopaedics, the dedicated surgeon is highly respected in his field. Local GPs constantly refer patients to his services and the hospital is well-equipped to handle the demand. “We have plenty of back up facilities. The hospital has visiting cardiologists and a range of skilled surgical specialists, as well as excellent x-ray, MRI, and ultrasound services. “The specialists all work together at Ormiston, with the patient as their primary focus.” Although Mr French has ceased his work in the public sector, this means he has more time to focus on his patients and ensure they receive the best care possible. Angus Grainger, Head boy ■■ School has taught me so much, not just classroom learning but general life skills, learning how to lead, stand up for what you believe, to relate to others. It teaches you patience and how to use your work ethic in all areas of your life. A good school should teach you how to learn so the world becomes your learning environment, and I believe the college has done that for me. ■■ Tertiary study - a three-year jazz performance degree. ■■ I want to become a producer or songwriter/composer. It is a hard industry to crack but I want to give it a go. I wouldn’t mind being a mechanic either. I’m excited to see where my life goes and to see what career I end up in. As long as I work hard and be respectful, I should be successful in whatever I do.

yms aren’t just about pumping iron as the veteran operators behind the Jetts Fitness network in East Auckland can testify. Partners in marriage and business, Alan and Frances Spiller, have gone from strength to strength since entering the fitness industry decades ago although youthful appearances may deceive. Born in Howick to the preeminent Spiller family (son of Ross Spiller, grandson of businessman ‘Ossie’), Alan began weightlifting while studying at Pakuranga College and later went on to qualify in physiotherapy. Meanwhile, his other interest in commercial fishing paid off and he saved up enough to buy the gym he was a member at, the former Howick Fitness Centre in Moore Street. As gym traffic increased, so did the arrows in Cupid’s bow, striking the heart of a young woman who lived in Rodney Street. One day, looking out of the window onto the house that backed onto the gym, Alan saw a strange sight. “I saw this girl going backwards and forwards on a tractor on the driveway. “That was the first time I probably saw Frances,” says Alan. Frances later joined Howick Fitness and the pair met at a

gym members’ car rally Alan organised in Waiwera. The rest is history. Today, the Spillers own five Jetts 24-hour franchises and have a history of running wellknown gyms in Botany and Meadowlands. In fact, Alan recently marked his 30th year as a fitness centre owner with Frances not too far off the mark, being actively involved in the personal training and group fitness circuits. In that time, the go-getting duo managed to raise a family; daughter Dayna is now a manager at the Botany Road branch. “She does an amazing job,” says Frances. “But at the same time all of our crew are amazing. We’re an extended family. “We’re jokingly perceived as mum and dad – I’d rather brother or sister! – but we all

get on and that’s the success of the business.” Not only do the staff members take ownership of their clubs, they are also loyal to the Spillers – three celebrate their fifth year with the relatively young group this year. With a sincere, all-inclusive approach, the hands-on entrepreneurs have created a united team that genuinely wants all members to succeed. “I’ve always believed in the philosophy that how you treat the team is how they treat your members,” says Alan. Despite busy schedules, the Spillers continue to support charities such as Heart Kids NZ and the SPCA through Jetts, with the Howick arm raising the most money in a recent 12-hour treadathon. Their gyms have been a regular feature in past Santa Parades and throughout the years they have supported its organisers in advertising with the Times. The Times connection dates back even further with Alan and Frances helping with paper deliveries as teenagers. In turn, staff members frequented the gym on Moore Street when the publishing company was based in Union Road until 2004. “It’s our local community paper,” says Alan. “It’s the paper we’d pick up first – the only one in fact!”

roposed changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA) don’t go far enough to quickly resolve the Auckland housing crisis, according to the Property Institute of New Zealand. The Government has released a 180-page Resource Legislation Amendment Bill, which contains 40 changes to the RMA of 1991, the Reserves Act 1977, the Public Works Act 1981, the Conservation Act 1987, the Environmental Protection Authority Act 2011, and the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012. The changes include national templates that would standardise planning guidelines around the country, eliminating the need for each local council to produce its own. Consenting for minor works would be simplified and a new 10-day fast track consent process introduced. Councils would be required to develop ‘fixed fees’ for consents so that homeowners know upfront what they would cost. Consents would not be needed for activities already regulated by other Acts, and changes would be made to the Public Works Act in favour of faster and simpler compensation for people affected by compulsory acquisitions. The institute’s chief executive, Ashley Church, says some of the changes will make a big difference to existing homeowners and could significantly reduce time and costs. But, he says, they will do little to accelerate the rate of new dwelling construction. “These changes will be great for people wanting to build a deck or move a fence,” he says. “But they’re not going to lead

planning: New law changes are not expected to accelerate new dwelling construction. Times photo Wayne Martin

to a big jump in house building in Auckland.” Mr Church says he would have liked to see a clearer lead around the extent to which councils should be required to open up new land for development, reduced rules and costs associated with residential subdivisions, and the adoption of more recently recommended ideas, such as targeted rate funding to reduce the upfront costs of residential infrastructure on new home builders. Stephen Selwood, chief executive of the New Zealand Council for Infrastructure Development, says land use planning and resource management decisions are made under the RMA while decisions about investment and infrastructure to support land use decisions are made under the Local Government Act (LGA) and the Land Transport Management Act (LTMA). “Plans without money are almost not worth the paper they’re written on,” he says.

The council is encouraging all political parties to support a fundamental review of planning laws that would integrate urban planning development and investment and improve environmental outcomes. “During the 24-year history of the RMA, we have seen poor environmental outcomes in terms of freshwater quality, biodiversity and weak performance on climate change imperatives while the development community has been frustrated by the litigious, complex and disintegrated decision-making processes which have held back sustainable growth,” Mr Selwood says. “An obvious pathway forward would be to merge the planning components of the RMA with the planning and investment components of the LGA and LTMA, and develop an Environmental Protection Act as a separate law dedicated to delivering high environmental outcomes for all New Zealanders.”

Housing supply on the move

A touch of red R

ed is a hot colour, symbolising life, love, power, happiness, joy, sophistication and luxury. Red helps give decor a new lease on life as a feeling of warmth is created in a home. Although it’s a timeless colour that can be incorporated into all types of decors, red should be used sparingly to stimulate you rather than hit you over the head. Red furniture could be added to a room with white walls, or red cushions added to grey sofas. One of the kitchen walls could be painted red or a red appliance installed. Try not to have more than 20

per cent red in the overall decor. It especially works well in rooms where there’s a lot of white, black and grey. If you want to paint several walls red, do it in places where you don’t spend a lot of time – in the entrance hall or the bathroom, for example. On the other hand, some people love red bedrooms, which are really different and set the mood for love and passion. Saturated reds are a great choice for their versatility and brightness. It’s all a matter of taste, but if you adore red, go for it.

Growth in residential building nationally hit an all-time record of a billion dollars of work consented in a month for the first time ever, according to Statistics New Zealand building consent data. Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith says he is particularly encouraged by the 966 new home consents in Auckland as it is getting close to the 1000 a month needed to match a demand for new housing. “It is a 20 per cent increase on the previous month and three times the number consented in November 2008,” he says. “We are continuing to free up more land faster through the Auckland Housing Accord and the eight other Accords we have with councils across the country. “We have initiatives in place to constrain building material costs, rein in development contributions, cut compliance costs and invest in improved sector productivity.” The next steps in the Government’s programme include advancing new housing on Crown-owned land in Auckland, supporting Auckland Council in completion of the new Auckland Unitary Plan, consulting on a new Urban Development National Policy Statement and reform of the Resource Management Act to address the long-term issues affecting housing supply and affordability.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, January 14, 2016 — 23

Munro fills McCullum’s boots S

tepping into the shoes of retiring Black Caps cricket captain Brendon McCullum in the shorter forms of the game is not beyond Colin Munro judging from his magnificent T20 50 from 14 balls against Sri Lanka at Eden Park on Sunday. Playing at third drop behind inform openers Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson, Munro had previously impressed with his 36 from 25 balls in the Mt Maunganui international against the same team. His sensational half century in Auckland eclipsed the 19-ball NZ record Guptill had set earlier in the same game which was four better than the previous mark Guptill had shared with Aaron Redmond.

Agnew’s Angle This season the Howick Pakuranga batsman’s domestic form for Auckland has been fantastic, highlighted by a national record 23 sixes when scoring 281 from 167 balls against Central Districts at Napier. So compelling was his form for the Auckland Aces that national selector Gavin Larsen admitted he and coach Mike Hesson had no option but to select him for the T20 series. Hopefully he can maintain that

form against a Pakistan team that should present a more formidable bowling attack than Sri Lanka, especially with 23-yearold Mohammad Amir returning to the team after his five-year ban for spot fixing. When McCullum retires from all international cricket after next month’s home series against Australia he will leave behind many lasting memories, not least his test triple century and his leadership in taking the Black Caps through to the 2015 World ODI final against Australia. Previous wins in that series against Australia, England and South Africa provided thrilling entertainment, especially that semi-final against South Africa when Grant Elliott hit a last ball

six against Dale Steyn. It was also during that series that Guptill came out of a form slump to reward the selectors’ faith in him and he has continued to do so, topping the world with 1489 runs the last calendar year at an average of 55.14. It’s interesting to note that the Black Caps never lost an ODI the 10 times he scored a century With the unflappable Williamson now ranked the world’s No 1 test batsman, McCullum will bow out of international cricket leaving the team in good shape. While many fans sympathised with the manner in which Ross Taylor lost the captaincy the decision to give the job to McCullum has proved to be the right one in providing a leader with an

attacking mindset. True, there have been times when he has danced with death with reckless abandonment, but his courage and strike power have made him an amazing Evel Knievel entertainer. His successor, the thoughtful Williamson, will be a very different skipper, one less inclined to take risks. But having scored 1172 test runs last year at an average of 90.15 and a highest score of 242, he will have his team’s respect. McCullum will be missed but in Guptill, Anderson, Munro and Jimmy Neesham the Black Caps won’t lack master blasters who have followed his swashbuckling style. Isner plays with Hawks International tennis star John Isner made a guest appearance at the Howick Pakuranga Baseball Club on Tuesday.

The big baseball fan, who has thrown first pitches at Yankees and Red Sox games, learnt some lessons from the Hawks themselves.

owick boys Daniel Chapman and Cameron Meyer, both 18, helped Auckland become back to back champions of the Under 19 softball national championships at Rosedale Park last week. Keen softball players at Howick since the age of six, Chapman and Meyer joined Marist before making the Auckland U19 representative softball team at the end of 2015. The tournament began on Thursday, January 7 in Albany but with games rained off on Friday due to the terrible weather, Auckland players faced a long day on Saturday with three games to play. Making their way through to the semi-final unbeaten, Auckland faced a gruelling back-andforth battle against Wellington ending in a 4-all tie. Auckland pushed on in the gripping tie-breaker to gain one extra point over Wellington, securing their place in the final. Meeting Wellington rivals again in the final, Auckland pulled up their socks managing to win 8-nil by the fifth inning. Chapman says managing to keep Wellington at nil points

and win by the mercy rule before the full eight innings was a huge feat. “Keeping the other team at nil in the final is pretty hard to do” he says. Unfortunately, for team mate Meyer, a niggling calf injury kept him off the pitch for the last game. Chapman’s dad Peter believes Chapman will be picked for the New Zealand Junior Black Sox team after being named top pitcher of the tournament and then going on to be named in the Under 19 tournament team. “He got top pitcher of this tournament out of about 27 pitchers from around New Zealand ... he’s more than likely

going to be chosen,” he says. Chapman and his dad both agree, however, that softball doesn’t attract as much attention in New Zealand as it deserves. “There are a lot of talented people out there who play softball and we just don’t get any recognition” Peter says. Chapman goes on to add that the New Zealand team especially are very successful. “We do quite well in it as well, we usually win the World Series” he says. Having finished at Pakuranga College last year, Chapman has secured a job with Kiwi Sox coaching and eagerly awaits the naming of the Junior Black Sox team in early February.
