Stephen Handisides founded the successful MyFaceMyBody Awards, publicly held last November at the prestigious Royal Garden Hotel in London. Described as the largest global aesthetic beauty awards in the world, it’s staged to recognise successful industry innovation and customer service excellence. The awards were televised in the United Kingdom and attended by a large number of industry experts and celebrities. Mr Handisides is bringing the MyFaceMyBody Awards to New Zealand and Australia this November and is planning a North American version for 2016. He hosts the Stephen Handisides

TEPHEN Handisides has gone in a short space of time from being a young man with big dreams to an industry leader in his field. The 35-year-old former Macleans College pupil is based in London, England, and is a global expert on the subject of beauty and personal grooming. He’s learned a lot about success along the way, including that it’s important to be surrounded by positive people. “It’s vital also for people to never give up, follow their dreams, and to create their own opportunities, he told the Times. “I really wanted to be a television presenter and knew it was a competitive field, so I started producing my own TV show until I was recognised. “People get noticed when they put themselves out there as an expert in their field, and it’s helpful to make

Mr Handisides’ company also produces a glossy annual magazine in the UK, entitled The Ultimate Beauty Guide. He recently started working as a beauty expert consultant on the popular North American television programme The Dr Oz Show. His interest in beauty and cosmetic surgery stems from having friends who had negative experiences with such procedures. “There was no education portal back then where people could go for good advice on cosmetic surgery, and other non-surgical options such as laser treatments and botox, says Mr Handisides. “I also really wanted to get into television presenting, so I decided

He’s driven by a desire to educate the public about new developments in the global beauty industry. “I focus on the latest trends of what’s new in the field of aesthetics and beauty. “I’m very interested in new nonsurgical innovations, such as freezing body fat instead of going under the knife. “It’s a booming market and I’m intrigued by the motivation of people to seek out cosmetic treatments.

Mr Handisides says he’s seeing more men paying close attention to their own personal grooming and appearance. “Guys internationally are really starting to look after themselves and using good skin care cream or having minor cosmetic surgery. “In New Zealand, cosmetic surgery such as facelifts seems to be more for people aged 50 and older who want to look good. “It’s interesting that a lot of younger people in Australia are taking more proactive action as well, he says. “I recommend that everyone uses a good sunscreen or moisturiser, even in winter, as that’s the best anti-ageing solution. ■■Aesthetic medicine is a specialist field separate from plastic surgery that focuses on anti-ageing scientific treatments allowing people to improve their appearance without going under the knife.

excellent example of what all the 40 volunteers feel about being involved. Volunteers come and go, and they’re mostly the younger ones who are studying and forging careers, and there have been success stories. One is Brian Hall, who was a HVR starter and has gone on to study at the national broadcasting school in Christchurch and is now employed at a commercial station. But it’s an older crew of loyal HVR volunteers who are the constant anchors of the weekly schedule. And like in most creative outlets, the characters abound at HVR. Author of the Howick-based Sammy Two Shoes children’s books, Gavin Gosney, is an HVR institution, drawing an audience that’s spread far and wide, in Howick, and around the country and world. ONY King enjoys his Howick Village Radio slot so much that he took the show on the road during the recent holidays. The station has produced many live outside broadcasts before, at remote destinations from its caravan at events such as Midnight Madness and the rugby sevens in Pakuranga, and from picturesque locations like Howick Beach. But what Tony delivered on Saturday, January 3, was a technological ďŹ rst for Howick Village Radio (HVR): the ďŹ rst outside broadcast from beyond Howick and Auckland’s borders – a live show from his holiday destination, Kai Iwi Lakes in Northland. Tony, who writes music reviews for the Times, rigged up a mobile broadcast unit that connected through on a phone line and beamed in loud and clear with his Budget Breakfast Show. It always carries news and information, but is mostly great music and knowledge of it, like his Buried Treasure show on Wednesdays at 7pm. Tony’s dedication and enthusiasm for the station and what he gets out of the experience is an

Golden prize for doctor’s practice By Marianne Kelly
S
YSTEMS introduced by medical practitioners that their patients understand are credited for a doctor’s surgery success in an annual top performing practice award. Botany Doctor at Botany Town Centre is the 2014 top performing practice, winning gold in the East Health Trust clinic excellence awards late last year. Monthly audit figures are collated and the PHO (primary health organisation) collects them to assess the performance of the South-East Auckland practices coming under its auspices. Statistics include cardiac arrest, cardiovascular risk assessment, cervical smears, mammography, smoking cessation, diabetes check-ups and insulin maintenance. The statistics provide an overview of the screening and clinical outcomes and, Dr Marcus Hawkins, Botany Doctor’s practitioner, says the award “is a nice indicator of clinical outcomes”. In 2011, the practice operated under the Procare PHO and won the best practice Procare quality awards. “This award with East Health is much bigger for us,” he says. “We’re very pleased to have the best statistics. We’re a small, compact and efficient practice and I’m very hands on.” Practice manager and nurse, Catherine Hawkins, says Botany Doctor does a lot of self-auditing. “Nobody is perfect so we can pick up where we have slipped through the cracks, stuff that is overlooked.” A key to the success, she says, is that all the clinical staff members have spent a decade or more working in the hospital system. “We’re used to dealing with the public and the big personalities and have learned to target the questions. “It’s always difficult dealing with issues which to them [patients] could be an emergency. But we must stay focused on what is a clinical emergency and them seeing why the decisions are what they are. Our patients know our system, which makes it easier for them and us,” she says. “It’s not completely rigid, but the systems allow the patients and staff to rely on them.” For example, they (patients) know to phone for appointments the day before, and know the practice always tries to see children the same day. The system, Ms Hawkins says, encourages people to leave more

urgent messages for the nurse. “It allows us to be triaging [determining patient treatment priorities] all the time so important stuff is not getting lost.” Dr Hawkins says the practice aims for people to get an appointment the same or the next day while children get priority: “Rarely do we redirect people.” However, it also has a rule to keep a cap on patient numbers so treatments are constantly manageable, rather than having so many people that it’s no longer possible to deliver services. They describe Botany Doctor as an average-sized practice, drawing from the surrounding areas of Dannemora, Botany, Howick, Pakuranga and Bot-
any Junction. Being based in a shopping centre results in the practice dealing with a variety of issues, Dr Hawkins says. “We get more people dropping in as casuals off the street and we get a lot of young people, as we’re close to the school across the road [Botany Downs Secondary College].” It also prides itself on patients always seeing their own doctor. “I feel strongly that you sign up with a doctor, not a practice,” Dr Hawkins says. “You should have access to that doctor for ongoing follow-up and familiarity. People don’t like getting a different doctor each time.” While monthly statistics are good
indicators, Dr Hawkins says the practice likes to keep on top of other issues, such as monitoring medications, especially for older people who may be on a variety of drugs, “so it’s worth reviewing them”. Other things regularly monitored are chronic obstruction airways diseases, such as bronchitis or emphysema usually caused by cigarettes. “Smoking is still a major issue,” Dr Hawkins says. “We find the damage has been done years ago and it has to be looked after now. It’s about managing the disease.” Sexual and mental health for teenagers is also an ongoing issue. Ms Hawkins says a Governmentfunded programme is in place for
people under the age of 22, but they’re entitled to only three visits. “It’s an area that’s evolving and we see a great need for it,” she says. “But the programmes are always being cut or on the verge of being cut. “It’s frustrating as treatment can prevent so many long-term issues, such as unwanted pregnancies, terminations, and the spread of sexual diseases. “There is not a lot for young people and they don’t fall within a particular demographic,” she says. “Young people apply to this programme regardless of their background. Teenagers are not discussing these issues with their parents. And, no matter how well off the parents are, this area is a level playing field.”
Four-legged escape artist has community out searching FANNY, the tiny bichon frise dog, has been doing her very best to become famous. The little white pooch went missing from the Somerville home of her owners Gareth Bird and Taryn Lee Pewsey at about 9.30am last Friday. A resident saw a dog matching Fanny’s description near Elim Christian Centre in Botany a short time later and notified users of the East Auckland
Grapevine Facebook page of the recent sighting. A large number of people kept up to date with the hunt for Fanny and began reporting numerous sightings of her on the popular community Facebook page. One of the page’s members saw the missing dog at about 7pm last Friday near Paparoa Park in Cockle Bay. The slippery pooch was also appar-
ently seen in nearby Churchill Road. More reported sightings of Fanny followed, with her usually being seen travelling as fast as her legs would carry her. An East Auckland Grapevine page member then spotted Fanny running along Sandspit Road in Cockle Bay. The news was reported to Mr Bird, who hurried to the scene. Just after midday last Sunday, Ms
Pewsey uploaded a photo of herself with little Fanny finally contained at Cockle Bay Beach. The Facebook thread announcing Fanny was found safe and well received more than 140 comments and has been liked more than 840 times. While people were engaged in searching for the bichon frise, other East Auckland dog lovers were hitting the streets to try to find a missing bea-
gle named Monty. The four-year-old dog vanished from his owners’ Cockle Bay home on New Year’s Eve, possibly spooked by noisy fireworks. Monty is a tan and cream-coloured dog and was wearing a blue colour when he vanished. For more information, refer online to www.facebook.com, and search for East Auckland Grapevine.

ESPITE Franklin being one of the Auckland Council wards furthest from the CBD, its councillor is taking a progressive stance on the proposed City Rail Link (CRL) project. The CRL is a 3.5-kilometre tunnel underneath the city centre, with new stations at Karangahape Road and near Aotea Square. It’s estimated to cost about $2.5 billion. Bill Cashmore, the councillor for Franklin, which includes the Beachlands and Maraetai townships, spoke in favour of the project at the Howick Local Board’s monthly meeting in November. He compared the CRL to the building of Auckland Harbour Bridge in the 1950s.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, January 15, 2015 — 5

F THERE’s one thing that assistant principal of Elim Christian College, Carol Pottow, finds most rewarding, it’s seeing students blossom for five years till they walk out of the college gates ready to take on the world. “I love watching the year 9s grow into well rounded personalities. When they first enter the college they’re so awkward. “By the end of year 13, they’re confident and have character,” she says with a smile, getting mistyeyed watching year 13s say goodbye to the school that was home for five years. Ms Pottow is particularly proud of Joshua Cloke, one of Elim’s ace students, who has been awarded the prestigious Victoria Excellence Scholarship from Victoria University in Wellington, valued at $20,000 over three years. With a passion for French language, history and classics, Joshua has been on the Interact board – a service club for youths, supported by Rotary International; a part of the peer support group and the student council. He’s also been a World Vision leader, Lion’s Club youth ambassador and has participated in the Auckland Model UN Youth N2MUN, some of a long list of activities he’s excelled at. The Model UN is a springboard to help young people go out into the world feeling empowered to deliver change for the better, and Joshua is determined to make a big difference. “I’m going to take the knowledge and wisdom from the people who helped me and take it to the outside world,” says the artistically inclined, high achieving student. “I’ve learnt here what it means

to be a Christian in a secular society. The college has been a safe bubble and given me a place to grow in multiple ways – intellectually, spiritually and raised me out of what I came with.” When Joshua got admitted to the college in year 9, he had an eating disorder. His family had tried everything to help him fight it. He’d even been hospitalised but it didn’t work. “But the school welcomed me with open arms and accepted me for who I am. “My family, of course, has always

More stub out habit QUITLINE is reporting a busy start to 2015 with 1685 New Zealanders signing up to use its quitting smoking support services in the first week of the year. It attributes the high number quitting to the 10 per cent increase in tobacco excise that came into effect on January 1. “A price increase always prompts smokers to try to quit the addiction,” says Quitline chief executive Paula Snowden. “This year we’ve seen big cost increases across most tobacco brands. “One of the cheaper packs of 20 has gone up by 21 per cent. It’s now $18.20.”

CALL to retain the currently cherished leafy environment and character of a heritage zoned suburb has been made by members of the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association. Maureen Forrester, the association’s secretary, addressing the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan (PAUP) independent hearing panel, questions the concept of a “one size fits all strategy that does not recognise the uniqueness of different communities across the city and the varying amenity values each offer. People, she says, purchased properties in the Cockle Bay area knowing the provisions and rules that applied. “They bought on the understanding of the conditions that applied and paid premium prices in the case of the heritage zone. A survey of 1800 households in Cockle Bay, classified as Residential Heritage Zone in the Manukau Operative Plan, was carried out and close to 100 per cent of respondents said they wanted the heritage zone preserved rather than an ‘overlay’ proposed in the PAUP. Mrs Forrester says there was widespread concern that an overlay could more easily be removed at Auckland councillors’ whim in the future. Respondents did not want front yards reduced from 6 metres to 5m, rear yards reduced from 6m to 1m, and side yards reduced to 1m, compared with keeping 1.2m on one side and 2.4m on the other. They also did not want the yard reductions included in the PAUP’s Single Housing Zone. Few, she says, believed the proposed HIRB (height in relation to boundary) would protect privacy and they did not want a neighbour to build on their boundary. Present northern and road boundary rules cause the least shading of adjoining sites to the north and the front yard rule prevents buildings from dominating the street, she says. The 35-degrees recession plane for southern boundaries limits the height of a building so that it does not block light from the northern boundary of the neighbouring site. “The building’s proximity to the

Mrs Forrester says, “has an impact on the amount of sun received by the neighbouring site. “Buildings that are close to the southern boundary can affect the sunniest part of the neighbouring site. Therefore it’s important to consider factors such as site orientation, shape and topography when deciding on how a building should be sited on a piece of land. Mrs Forrester says the association also opposes “discretionary approval being granted by council officers for any property development controls. “Any construction that does not meet all of the development con-
trol rules – building height, density, HIRB, yards, and building coverage, should be considered a resource consent ‘non-complying’ activity and require neighbour’s approval in all instances, she says. The association is advocating a “pilot approach to demonstrate the outcomes of the Unitary Plan before imposing rezoning changes on the entire city. “Concentrate, she says, “on filling existing vacant land first to determine the outcome of the plan before imposing massive rezoning changes on the entire city, and the intensification along the rail line where millions of ratepayers’ money is being directed.

It seems wee Amy was so excited about the advent of the New Year that she forgot her own date on the calendar still had three weeks to go – surprising her proud parents Adrienne and David. The Dudleys had a quiet New Year’s Eve celebration with friends before the arrival of Amy, their first child on January 2 at 2.25am. She weighed in at 2800 grams.
Romance with sea
JANUARY 12: Popular Bucklands Beach sailor Steve Trevurza is taking the Trans-Atlantic Solo Yacht Race so seriously that he has put his honeymoon on hold until after it’s completed. Trevurza and his partner, Ponsonby yachtie Daphne Jefcoate, are to be married in September just before the start of the 6400km race from France to the West Indies. However, Jefcoate will stay in close contact with her new husband as she’s his onshore crew and Trevurza says they may use the yacht for their honeymoon after the race. “We may sail around the Caribbean in it.” Trevurza has all hands on deck in preparation, building his own 6.5m yacht which will be fitted with a relatively new swinging keel designed to provide less drag than conventional ones. A sailmaker by trade, Trevurza has sailed in two Whitbread round the world races, with his most recent one being a cook on Ross Field’s 1994 entry Yamaha. “Everything is going well and the yacht I’m building for the race is an allround craft because you can’t rely on one point of sail,” says Trevurza. A good performance in last October’s
Coastal Classic gave Trevurza his first taste of solo sailing and provided him with a victory on handicap.
Conservation prize
JANUARY 12: A Howick scientist with a passion for whales has won the Antarctic Society’s conservation trophy for 1994. Sue Miller, a dedicated marine biologist, was selected for the award for her work with the World Wide Fund for Nature New Zealand. The former Mellons Bay Primary and Howick College student works as a species protection officer for the United Nations’ South Pacific Regional Environmental Programme and is based in Apia, Samoa. Proud father and Howick resident Hugh Miller says his daughter’s work with the Fund for Nature took her all over the world, to places as diverse as Norway, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The award, which he says is a fitting tribute to a “local girl made good”, was presented largely in recognition of her efforts to secure a Southern Ocean whale sanctuary.

JANUARY 16: An enthusiastic Pakuranga gardener is amazed at the result of his first attempt to grow sunflowers. Ed Miller’s tall Russian variety of the popular flower stretch over 2.5m high – some with heads bigger than a large dinner plate – and sway brightly along the base of a cliff in front of his waterfront home. “They’re my pride and joy,” he says. Mr Miller’s fascination with sunflowers began when he was travelling around India last year. “In the south of India there are hundreds and hundreds of acres of them. I thought I’d give it a crack when I came home.”

P
HILLIP Toms is gearing up for an adventure that will likely call on every skill and bit of experience he’s gained so far in the police. Ormiston’s community police constable flies out today to begin a one-year overseas deployment on Bougainville Island near Papua New Guinea. He’s part of a contingent of four Kiwi police officers making the trip and the only one from the Counties Manukau district. “We’ll be helping the local police and community over there on behalf of the New Zealand Police,” Mr Toms told the Times. “I will be in police uniform, but won’t be carrying weapons such as pepper spray. “As advisors, we won’t be policing as such. We’ll be working with Bougainville Islanders and police and teaching them about the prevention-first strategy the police use in New Zealand.” Mr Toms and his colleagues hope to give their Bougainville Island counterparts examples of successful Kiwi policing. “We’ll teach them so they can hopefully take it and apply it,” he says. “We aren’t going there to tell people what to do.” Mr Toms undertook intense pre-deployment training, including a four-wheel driving course, to prepare for his overseas posting. He also received several medical inoculations to combat diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. “We learned how to get ourselves out of certain situations, such as if we were stuck in a creek or crossing a river,” says Mr Toms, about the pre-deployment course. “It was so we would know what

to do if we got stuck. “We also learned how to save each other using ropes and I had to jump into an ice-cold river.” One thing Mr Toms hasn’t been able to prepare for is Bougainville Island’s climate. “It gets very hot there in summer and can reach 42 degrees Celsius,” he says. “That’s what hits you when you first get there.” Mr Toms is no stranger to heat, however. As a former NZ Army Territorial Force soldier for 20 years, he once took part in an exercise in Adelaide, South Australia, where
the weather reached above 50 degrees C. Among the things he’s learned about Bougainville Island since finding out he was going there is that it isn’t particularly wealthy. “There are a lot of people who come down from where they live in the mountains to sell their produce in the markets,” says Mr Toms. “I expect to be out and about a lot and I’m excited about it. “I’d like to think I can make my mark and do some good overseas. “As Ormiston’s police constable, I have done a lot of work with shops and schools and at the road
intersections. “Hopefully I can find my niche there and help the police and local community.” Mr Toms says it will be tough to say goodbye to his young family in Auckland. “Having served in the army for more than 20 years, I have been overseas before,” he says. “I will be able to come back every three-four months though. “I’ve talked to other police officers who have done an overseas deployment and they said they learned a lot about themselves from it. “You can’t beat experience.”
Keeping safe behind wheel
A NEW campaign to debunk alarming drink-driving myths has been launched. Auckland Transport (AT) research, involving 20- to 29-year-old males and females, reveals some concerning views about what constitutes safe driving practices. Among the myths are: “Four drunk eyes are as good as two sober eyes”; “I’m the least drunk sober driver”; “better a drunk person you know than a sober stranger”; “it’s okay if your mates push you to drive”; and “I’ve sobered up, I’m sweet to drive”. AT community and road safety manager Karen Hay says the Drunksense/ Straightsense campaign highlights some “stupid and dangerous views that people hold around drinking and driving, and looks to debunk these urban myths and promote safer choices”. Traditionally alcohol-related deaths and serious injuries can spike around the holiday season, she says. While Auckland alcohol-related road deaths and serious injuries have been trending downwards since 2009, they still contribute to 28 per cent of all road deaths and serious injuries. “Young drivers aged 20-24 make up 27 per cent of all drivers involved in alcohol-related crashes, which is why the campaign is primarily targeted at them,” Ms Hay says. Crash statistics show that people of all ages are continuing to put lives at risk by thinking they can drive safely with an excess amount of alcohol in their system. “It’s not just an issue affecting younger drivers,” she says. Counties Manukau road policing manager, inspector Alison Brand, says alcohol at any level impairs driving. “Even small amounts of alcohol affect your judgement, and the ability to drive safely begins to deteriorate, even after one drink.” The campaign coincides with the introduction of the new blood alcohol limit for drivers aged 20 years and over, lowered from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood (0.08) to 50mg (0.05).

Auckland Transport (AT) and Opus International have won the New Zealand Engineering Award for Excellence in Community Engagement for their work on the Panmure stage of the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI). The award is for “exceptional engineering activities that effectively engaged with and empowered community values during planning and then through three years of construction. Last November, AT opened the 1.5-kilometre Te Horeta Road, which has a 220-metre tunnel, cycle lanes and a shared cycle and footpath. Three new bridges, a new Panmure rail station and storm water upgrades have also been completed, while improvement to Van Damme’s Lagoon is nearing completion. AT AMETI project director Peter King says members of the community were empowered to participate and have their concerns addressed throughout design and construction of the project. “There was a strong focus on working collaboratively with the community to refine options and resolve issues, he says. “We built strong relationships with people and kept businesses regularly updated on the major changes that come with construction of this size. Mr King says the project team was particularly conscious of iwi cultural values. “We worked closely with six iwi groups to ensure the strong iwi associations with the Panmure site were reflected in design. “We ensured that construction works were fully monitored and items of cultural value were treated appropriately. For the Van Damme’s Lagoon improvement, iwi were involved in relocating 450 native eels to other locations within the Tamaki catchment. Ngati Paoa Iwi Trust’s environmental manager Lucy Tukua says the AMETI project team embed-

A MAN was sentenced in the Auckland District Court recently to four years and six months’ imprisonment, following a Serious Fraud Office (SFO) prosecution. Grant Malcolm Herbert, 62, was found guilty by a jury of 17 Crimes Act charges and seven Secret Commissions Act charges. The former owner and director of the insurance brokering firm Herbert Insurance Group Limited (HIG) had received premiums from clients, but failed to forward approximately $2.5
million of them to insurers, in some cases leaving the customers uninsured. He diverted the money to pay operating expenses for HIG. He had also given an employee of an insured customer secret commissions for referring insurance business to HIG. That company was overcharged approximately $220,000 for its insurance. Prior to the trial, Mr Herbert had also pleaded guilty to using a forged document in relation to obtaining a credit facility in the

The size and complexity of the project made it imperative that members of the affected communities were able to share their views and concerns, says Keryn Kilskey, Opus project director. “The community, iwi and key stakeholders were actively involved with the design process, he says. “The importance of this involvement was reflected in obtaining the statutory approvals for the project where relatively few submissions were received for a project of this size and complexity. sum of $250,000. SFO director Julie Read says: “Clients who were uninsured as a result of Mr Herbert’s offences were exposed to a risk of loss many times greater than the cost of the premiums which they paid in good faith. “These and the other offences of which he has been convicted represent serious breaches of trust on the part of Mr Herbert. “Mr Herbert’s conduct has also had the potential to damage the community’s confidence in dealing with brokers, and thereby damaged the interests of all those brokers who act honestly.

COLOURFUL CANVAS: Artist Bill Toseland publicly displays a collection of his original paintings at the Uxbridge Cafe in Times photo Wayne Martin Howick until March 6.

ILL Toseland isn’t fussy when it comes time to deciding the subject of his next creation. “I paint all sorts of things, including land and seascapes, portraits, animals and still life,â€? the 80-yearold Howickian told the Times. “It’s whatever takes my fancy on the day.â€? Mr Toseland publicly displays a collection of his realist artworks at the Uxbridge Cafe in Howick until March 6. All of the 20 original oil paintings are for sale. The retired cabinetmaker ďŹ nds artistic inspiration in photographs he sees in newspapers or magazines, or just what he sees while out and about. “I’ve been painting for three decades, but it’s only in the past ďŹ ve-six years that I’ve taken it seriously,â€? says Mr Toseland.
A glimpse at the works in his exhibition, entitled Personal Point of View, reveals an artist with a diverse range of interests. There are depictions of an elephant and male lion, an Italian village, motor vehicles sitting in congested Central Auckland trafďŹ c, jockeys competing in a horse race, idyllic rural scenes and a row of colourful boatsheds. Two paintings featuring local scenes show people enjoying the sun while sitting outside The Good Home pub in Picton Street, Howick, and an old timber home in rural South-East Auckland. Among Mr Toseland’s favourite works in the visual display is a painting of a still used to make pear liqueur and several pieces of the fruit. “I really like the colours in that piece,â€? he says. “It’s meant to be copper, so there’s a lot of orange in there, and
I like the dark background as it makes it stand out. His creative talent received a boost when he attended four art lessons under accomplished Pakuranga painter and art tutor Tony Clarke. “Some of my paintings in this exhibition are in a very different style to what I normally produce in that they are very meticulous, says Mr Toseland. “I’m usually a bit impatient and just want to slap some paint on. “I’m being a bit self-indulgent with this exhibition. “I’ve been painting for all these years and now I’m showing off what I’ve produced. Bill Toseland’s public art exhibition, entitled Personal Point of View, displays at the Uxbridge Cafe at 35 Uxbridge Road, Howick, until Friday, March 6. Entry is free and all works are for sale.

Penalty costs debutant podium result RYAN Sissons has had an impressive outing in his long distance triathlon debut, coming ďŹ fth in the Tauranga Half Ironman on Saturday. The race was won by Australian Craig Alexander, followed by Wanaka’s Baden Currie, who claimed the national long distance championship as the ďŹ rst Kiwi home. Botany’s Cameron Brown was third. After being amongst the lead group coming out of the twokilometre swim leg, Sissons, of Howick, was rueing a three-

minutes to ďŹ nish in 3h 53m 50s, only 26 seconds off fourth place and the national championship bronze medal. Meanwhile, 42-year-old

Brown is third seed for the Ironman 70.3 to be held in Auckland this Sunday. Kiwi Terenzo Bozzone, third in last year’s race, is the top seed followed by Australian Tim Reed. This will be the ďŹ nal chance for Brown to win his hometown race, with the event moving to Taupo from 2016 onwards. He was 23rd in the inaugural staging in 2013 having suffered a puncture on the bike leg, and placed sixth last year. Auckland 70.3 starts at 6.15am this Sunday at Princes Wharf.
Corey Anderson on song C
OREY Anderson’s timely return to form with a man of the match knock of 81 runs in the ďŹ rst cricket ODI against Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval clinched a Black Caps win from the jaws of defeat despite a blazing 51 from opener Brendon McCullum. It also justiďŹ ed his selection in the 15-man World Cup squad, though I’m not convinced the same can be said for Grant Elliott’s selection ahead of fellow allrounder Jimmy Neesham. Sure, Neesham had failed to ďŹ re in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan. But he was in sparkling batting form in the home tests against Sri Lanka when he also captured wickets with the ball. A quick scorer, his powerful batting looks ideally suited to the one-day game where he could have been great value in the middle order alongside the big-hitting Anderson. With Martin Guptill going for a duck and Kane Williamson and Tom Latham each dismissed for
Agnew’s Angle 15, Elliott couldn’t reproduce his domestic form for Wellington when he was bowled for a measly single. Fortunately Luke Ronchi and Nathan McCullum helped right the ship in concert with the impressive Anderson to steer New Zealand to victory. It has been a lean year for the burly Anderson since his world record 36-ball ODI century in Queenstown last summer, but no one can doubt his enormous potential or hitting power. With Williamson’s sore shoulder keeping him sidelined for the next few games, coach Mike Hesson will be hoping Guptill, Latham and Elliott quickly produce form to justify their selection. While the batting was brittle,
Hesson and bowling coach Shane Bond will have been delighted with the bowling, though an unlucky Trent Boult deserved a much better return than his 0-46. Leading the charge with 4-36 was ďŹ ery Mitch McClenaghan, who bounced back well after conceding 15 from his ďŹ rst two overs. Speedster Adam Milne conďŹ rmed once again he’s far more economical than in the past in capturing 2-37 and spinner Nathan McCullum’s 1-38, on top of his solid batting, suggested he’s not ready to surrender his place in the side to Daniel Vettori without a ďŹ ght. Meanwhile the selectors have wisely decided to rest veteran Kyle Mills for a few more games to allow his groin injury to completely heal. While New Zealand deserved their three-wicket win in Christchurch, they can thank Milne for dismissing the brilliant Kumar Sangakkara for 4 after Williamson took one of his special catches. Instead the crowd were treated
to a magniďŹ cent 104 from Mahala Jayawardene whose timing and placement was impeccable. Should he, Sangakkara and captain Angelo Mathews ďŹ re at the same time they will pose a threat to any team at the World Cup. That will be especially true when slinger Lasith Malinga returns to the bowling crease and threatens batsmen with his toe crunching yorkers. While appreciating the class of the best Sri Lankans, it is unfortunate the players and fans were not given more variety. Seven ODIs after two tests between the same two teams is too much before the Black Caps play two onedayers against Pakistan heading into the start of the World Cup. However, the form of players as they battle for berths in the top 11 will continue to provide fascinating viewing for Black Cap fans whose expectations of success continue to grow.
Top pros play Whitford Park WHITFORD Park Golf Club will play host to some of the country’s top players for the Volvik pro-am tournament this weekend. The club has reinstated the event after a three-year hiatus, and has attracted a strong ďŹ eld of 41 professionals, who will each play alongside two amateur players. Lining up for the two rounds will be Ryan Fox, of Beachlands, and fellow high-ranking Kiwis Michael Hendry, Mark Brown and Howick’s Richard Lee, as well as Australian Peter Fowler. They will be vying for a purse of $20,000 and the chance to grab an early lead in the 2015 NZ order of merit. “Everyone is a bit shocked at the calibre of player we’ve got,â€? says Whitford Park general manager Scott Bower. The only professional woman in the draw is big-hitting Phillis Meti, the former world long drive champion who can reach 300 metres off the tee. There are two tee times of 8am and 1pm on Saturday and Sunday. There is also a skins game on Friday at 1pm between Fox, Hendry, and Lincoln Tighe, who won the NSW PGA Championship last month. The event is open to the public.

Markswoman sets new marks By Daniel Silverton
R
ECORDS that have stood for 25 years were broken at the national archery championships last week. Maraetai’s Cheree Kinnear, 18, defended her junior women’s recurve target title at the event held at Rongomai Park, Flat Bush, which attracted 196 competitors including a number of representatives from other countries. Kinnear shot 1202 from a possible 1440, and 555 out of a possible 720 in the two rounds. Her 1440 score, one of only two above 1200, would have also won her the open women’s division. She set five new tournament records, including three held by a fellow South-East Aucklander for 25 years. Kinnear surpassed marks held by Flat Bush’s Elizabeth Ellery-Siaosi from the national championships in 1990. Her score of 1202 in the 1440 beat Ellery-Siaosi’s 1122, and she set new event bests from 70 metres, also a NZ record, and from 30m. “It was really awesome,” Kinnear told the Times. “I was really happy with how I went. To break records that have been standing for such a long time was such a good feeling.” Kinnear also improved the scores of two tournament records she already held. “It was really cool to be able to see I’ve improved over the year. “It was more about working on my personal form and the records were a bonus.” However, one feat she was striving

for was beyond reach. To qualify for the world junior championships later this year, Kinnear needs to shoot four scores of 1230 in the 1440 or 590 in the 720 round by February 9. She already has one, the only Kiwi to have done so, but couldn’t add to her tally in the two attempts at the nationals, with shifting winds testing the archers. “It was really difficult in those conditions,” she says.
“I have a few more opportunities to qualify but at this point I’m looking at the following year.” Kinnear’s score in the 720 target round ranked her first for the oneon-one matchplay discipline. Having gone through the first two matches with comfortable victories, she was locked in an absorbing duel with Tonga’s Lusitania Tatafu, which came down to a matter of a few millimetres.
The pair were all square at five points each after the maximum five sets. “After a tie, you have a shoot-off round where you shoot one arrow each, and the person who is closest to the centre wins the match,” says Kinnear. “I was shooting first and shot a nine about 3cm below the 10. Then she shot a nine about 3cm above the 10, so it was really close.

“The judge had to measure the arrows, and called her the winner. “There was a little bit of disappointment but I also came out of the match quite happy because I had shot well. “To get a nine on a shoot-off was really cool because even the top people in the world struggle with them. They are really high pressure. “I feel I couldn’t have done any better than I did. I really lifted my game and she was shooting well.” Kinnear went on to win the bronze medal match to add to her haul of silverware. Ellery-Siaosi won gold in the open women’s compound matchplay, after defeating double Paralympic gold medallist Danielle Brown in the semi-final. She also won the regional mixed team compound matchplay, representing Auckland District Archery Association with Steve Clifton. Her son, Botany Downs Secondary College pupil Isaac Ellery, was second in the cadet men compound target category.
