Latest honour tops them all By Daniel Silverton

He was awarded a bronze medal of the Olympic order in 1981 for his input into the rowing at a number of Games. Among the plethora of tributes he has been decorated with, the knighthood is the most special. “This one tops them all,” he says. “It came as a bit of a surprise. “It was quite emotional. I got a nice letter from the Governor General. “It was rather peculiar because it came right after I got the Order of Australia, which is a bit unique for a Kiwi. It was very nice of them.” Last month, he became one of the few New Zealanders to receive the Australian homage, for his contribution to rowing on that side of the Tasman. He represented New Zealand and Australia on the international rowing federation council for a number

very special people. “They get me a lot more credit than what I deserve for what we’ve done together, whether it be in rowing or business. “I’m a great believer in a team approach.”

He was awarded an MBE in 1973 and a CBE in 1979, and inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame last year. On the water, Sir Don was chairman of the organising committee for the 1978 World Rowing Champion-

of years, and earned the world rowing award for distinguished service in 2009. Sir Don, 88, is now “happily retired”, and enjoys boating with his wife of more than 50 years, Coralie, with whom he has a son and two grandchildren. The first few days as a knight were spent replying to all his many wellwishers around the country, and trying to get used to now being a Sir. “I’m struggling to try and answer emails and letters. We are going to write to people and thank them for their kind notes. That is important, I believe. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. Some of my mates are teasing me, and emphasising the Sir. They are having a bit of fun at my expense.” He still assists with maintaining the course at Karapiro, and is immensely proud of the New Zealand crews’ achievements which have followed in Rowlands and others’ wake. “At the last world champs, six gold medals, two silvers and a bronze – the top nation,” he says. “Us old guys stand back in awe of what the young people and administration are doing now. “We might have kicked it off, but boy, they certainly picked up the baton and run.”

OWING is often called the ultimate team sport, and sculler Don Rowlands has stayed true to the crew ethos, resulting in being awarded the country’s pinnacle accolade. He was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year Honours for his services to business and rowing. The knighthood is the latest of a remarkable number of distinctions Sir Don has earned in his fields of expertise. In 1950, he won a silver medal in the men’s rowing eight at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, which was followed by gold in the single sculls at the 1954 Games in Vancouver. Following his successful competitive rowing career, he became involved in administration of the sport, rising to prominent national and international positions. At the same time, the engineer by trade was making a name for himself in the business world, going on to serve in executive roles in three major New Zealand companies. In 1953, he joined the Fisher & Paykel company, which was the start of a 48-year association. “I joined them as an assistant production engineer, to supervise the building of their plant in Mt Wellington,” Sir Don told the Times. “They made me manager of the plant, and I worked my way up from there to chief executive.” It was while he was serving his apprenticeship at Mason Bros Engineering that he witnessed the Waterfront Strike of 1951. The stand-off instilled his business philosophy. “That taught me a great deal about how stupid management and unions could be. “I thought, ‘if I ever got a management job, I’d never act like that’. “I always understood unions were necessary and needed to be worked with, not against.” He went on to become a director at Fisher & Paykel, and his reputation for leadership saw him asked to become chair of Mainfreight in 1983, and he remained with the company for 28 years. He has also been a director of Hamilton Jet since 1990. “I’ve been lucky. My whole life I seem to have been surrounded by

LIVING tribute has been created to commemorate a dedicated volunteer who worked tirelessly for Howick Sailing Club. Ivan Raos, who was commodore at the club from 1999 to 2002, passed away in April last year. To recognise his input during one of the club’s heydays, the Ivan Raos Memorial Centreboard Trophy was commissioned, and will be awarded to the winner of the East Auckland Sailing Series. The series, which is contested by junior sailors from the Howick, Bucklands Beach, Maraetai and Glendowie clubs, was initiated this year by new Howick commodore Marc Frewin. “In the discussion I said I’d really like to honour Ivan Raos for his efforts for sailing in the area, says Mr Frewin. “He was one of the very prominent commodores in the early 2000s era, when the club was probably at its strongest, especially in the junior division. “He made things happen. He was a mover and shaker, and the club went ahead in leaps and bounds. Mr Frewin approached Ted Waters, from The Antique Shop in Howick, who came on board

Experts ready to inspire charges By Chris Harrowell

DOZEN top art tutors are moving their work from the studio to the public arena for an exhibition designed to inspire their potential students. The annual Masterclass showcase opens at 6.30pm this Thursday at Uxbridge, Howick’s creative centre. Among the tutors taking part in the display is well-known Farm Cove artist Amber Brook. The former winner of the prestigious Estuary Artworks competition’s people’s choice award teaches a range of classes at the public arts centre in Uxbridge Road. She’s entering several of her recent works into the exhibition, including an eye-catching oil painting entitled Showstopper. The artwork is a kaleidoscope of activity and Ms Brook says it features depictions of “everything you’d want in a circus”, including an elephant, lion, tiger and snakes, popcorn, dancers and numerous clowns. Her inspiration is drawn from memories of going to carnivals and circuses over the years and of the atmosphere at the popular annual Easter Show. “It’s a subject that I’ve always wanted to paint,” Ms Brook told the Times, about Showstopper. “The artwork started with one of the clowns in the corner and everything else just flowed into it.

“I’ve seen different things and picked up various ideas for it over the years. I work on several artworks at any one time, but it would have taken me a couple of months to complete. “What I like about the Masterclass exhibition is that it’s an opportunity to meet and inspire new people.” Other Uxbridge art tutors taking part in the display include painters Merv Appleton, Ria van Rooyen and James Lawrence, sculptor Raewyn Neale, and jewellery maker Simon Misdale, among others. It’s curated by Uxbridge visual arts manager Balamohan Shingade. “We’ve got 12 of the centre’s art tutors exhibiting and there will be works including painting, ceramics, glass bead making, jewellery and sculpture,” he says. “The goal of this exhibition is to showcase the excellence of our fine and applied arts tutors and for potential students to come and be inspired. “The opening night this Thursday coincides with our annual meet the tutors night. It gives prospective art students the chance to see the tutors’ work and talk to them about it.” The Masterclass exhibition is staged at the public arts centre at 35 Uxbridge Road, Howick, from this Friday until February 18. It opens at 6.30pm this Thursday alongside the meet the tutors night. Entry is free and all works are for sale.

Girls group spreads its positive message By Chris Harrowell THE members of all-girl music group Gap5 are prepared to work as hard as it takes to achieve their goals. Gap5 became a household name in New Zealand in 2013 by finishing in the top six of TV3’s The X Factor reality music competition programme. The group is comprised of singers Alexandra Light, Taiva Ioane, Nica Israel, Nicole Hedder and HannahJane Thorne. Thorne attended Elim Christian College in Botany and lives in Highland Park. Ioane attended Botany Downs Secondary College and Hedder is a former Pakuranga College head girl. Light and Israel live on Auckland’s North Shore. Gap5 is this month filming the music video for one of two singles it hopes to publicly release before June. One of them, entitled Hold On, will be available from May to coincide with the group’s performances around New Zealand as part of the upcoming Revolution Tour public music concerts. The single was primarily written by Hedder and musically arranged by all of Gap5’s members.

It’s inspired by positive messages the group shared with its fans during a successful two-week nationwide public music tour organised by Equippers Church, based in Central Auckland, last May. “We wrote the song [Hold On] with young people in mind,” Thorne told the Times. “It’s about experiences we’ve had and the message that if you keep going you will get the rewards. “Audiences really loved it.” Thorne says Gap5 is looking forward to seeing how the wider public responds to Hold On. “It’s different from what we’ve done before in that it’s our own song,” says the 24-year-old. “All people have heard us sing is covers of other artists’ singles. “Hold On is our own special project and I think we appreciate it more because it’s an original.” Hedder, 19, says the group has eight new songs in the works that it’s looking forward to eventually publicly releasing. “We haven’t thought too far ahead of our first original single as that’s our main focus right now,” she says. “We all have such busy lives, so it’s difficult for us to come together for studio time.”

AIMING HIGH: Public performance singing group Gap5 is comprised of, clockwise from back left, Alexandra Light, Taiva Ioane, Nica Israel, Nicole Hedder and Hannah-Jane Thorne. Photo supplied

The group is particular about the quality of what it is happy to publicly release. “There’s a lot of work behind everything we do,” says Hedder. “We love being an independent group right now. “We are all free spirits. We know exactly what we want and won’t compromise on that.” Thorne adds: “We love doing things our way. “When we do it our way, we know we’ve done it the right way.” Gap 5’s members look at accomplished Kiwi performers such as Lorde, Kimbra, and brother and sister act Broods as examples of how far they can go. “Our ultimate goal is to do really well in the New Zealand music industry,” says Hedder. “Our sound is quite different from other groups. “We want to work with music producers and broaden our horizons. “We’d love to have a long and prosperous career, but it’s not about the money.” People can follow Gap5 and listen to the group’s music by referring online to www.facebook.com/ gap5official and at www.soundcloud. com.

Kid athletes win medals

BUSINESS ACUMEN: Macleans College Young Enterprise teams TutorLink, with from left, Julian Abraham and Logan Johnson, and Tick Tock’s Aditi Gorasia, Daisy Huang, Pashva Parikh, Wendy Lee, Zhong Huang, Annie Han and Esther Chow. Photos supplied

Profit and prizes earned By DANIEL SILVERTON

C

OMING up with business ideas related to education have earned Macleans College pupils commercial kudos. Two Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) teams from the school picked up awards at regional and national competitions late last year. A group of year 12 students started a business called Tick Tock, which produced clocks to help teach young children how to read the time. “My younger brother is learning how to tell the time and it triggered memories because everyone goes through that phrase,” says the team’s communications manager, Aditi Gorasia. Managing director Wendy Lee says: “We wanted to solve a problem that hasn’t really been touched

before. “We did some market research and couldn’t find anything like what we created.” The final product is branded as What’s The Time Mr Wolf and encourages a three-step process to get kids to read the minutes, decide if it’s past or to the hour, then read the hour. The group used social media and directly approached schools, playcentres and parents with young children to make sales. “We’ve had feedback from the places we’ve sold to which have said children really enjoy it and it’s quite an effective tool,” says Wendy. The team moved 35 units and made a profit, while also making an impression at the Auckland South-East regional competition. They were awarded excellence in business management and

innovation prizes, as well as being named one of two regional companies of the year. Each of the seven members earned a $2000 Massey University scholarship.

Connected learning

Not getting value for money during one-size-fits-all tutoring classes inspired year 13 students Logan Johnson and Julian Abraham to come up with TutorLink. The online service matches pupils with tutors according to subject and duration of session. “It was a result of a brainstorming session,” says Julian. “We wanted something we could automate quite easily and figured that a web-based service would be an easy option for that.” Logan says: “The idea was that once it was up and running it would be self-sufficient. We got there in the end, but it took us far

longer than we expected.” The boys contracted fellow Macleans students to write the programme’s code and be the tutors, who were paid according to the NCEA level they were giving lessons in. While they didn’t acquire a high number of users, those who did made repeat bookings. In the final week of school last year, TutorLink travelled to Wellington to attend the national YES awards ceremony, where they won the innovation in ICT award which came with a $1000 cash prize. “We were shocked,” says Julian. “It was a cool experience. We made a lot of contacts.” The plan is to keep TutorLink running and hopefully expand its offerings. “The reason it appealed to us is that you can keep on adding sales without adding cost,” says Logan.

A TEAM of 18 track and field competitors from Pakuranga Athletic Club was in Wellington for the North Island Colgate Games early this month. The Colgate Games, New Zealand’s National Junior Athletics Championships, are for athletes aged seven to 14, with around 2000 youngsters representing their clubs at this year’s event. In the 10-14 years age group, three Pakuranga athletes won medals. Thomas Wynne, 10, took home gold in the high jump with a leap of 1.42 metres, beating his personal best by 7cm. Twelve-year-old Jorien Fourie was runner-up in the 80m hurdles by less than 0.2 of a second. Natasha Smith, 11, was third in the long jump with a mark of 4.25m. Pakuranga also came away with a number of pennants for divisional placings in the seven to nine age group. Howick is about to lose a retail and style icon. The very elegant and wellrespected owner of Richmond Boutique, Dawn Richmond, has sold her business and will retire at the end of this month. Dawn is looking forward to spending lots of time in her lush garden and to collecting up her seven-yearold grandson, Sam, from school each day. But, she knows she will miss the “people contact.” “Here at Richmond Boutique, I have made so many delightful friends among our customers over the years. I get to know families and now I’m seeing their children have children.” She will also miss the camaraderie of other Picton Street retailers. Richmond Boutique was opened in Picton Street by Dawn in September 1991. It soon gained a reputation for the quality and selection of leading fashion labels. When more space was required, a move was made in July 1998 to its current premises. Dawn has always loved fashion and worked in the industry for 12 years in Remuera before starting her own business. She has always focused on good service and been backed by capable staff. Well-known faces from the team, including Tracey Campbell (who has worked there since 1992), Fran Kent and Lyn Strachan, will work with the new owners when they reopen in early February.

Dawn has sold many of this country’s top labels over the years. She names the Paula Ryan label as her personal favourite saying: “Paula’s designs suit me and can be dressed up or down for the occasion.” Over her years in Picton Street, Dawn has seen many changes in Howick, notably the emergence of the new café scene which she says is now attracting lots of people into the village. Dawn is determined not to be “a lady who lunches” when she retires, but admits she might be lured back into the village for coffee catch-ups. And, for sure, she will be one who is always stylishy dressed.

AC>>=@B :=1/: Three golds in a row By Farida Master

T

HERE’S a lot of oohing and aahing as every teacher who walks into the school reception is taken up by the gleaming gold beautifully encased in velvet. Three gold medals decorated with colourful ribbons radiantly shine in a box held by Farm Cove Intermediate School student William Han. The 13-year old modestly accepts the gush of compliments with a little smile on his face. Farm Cove Intermediate principal Linda Harvie explains that William is the only student in New Zealand and the Pacific region who is a 2014 triple medal winner in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), held by the University of New South Wales. “He’s scored the highest marks in maths, science and English at the ICAS, with 100 per cent in maths, 100 per cent in science, and 97 per cent in English, she says, acknowledging the high ranking student. William is particularly thrilled he’s scored high in English. The exceptionally intelligent student says: “In 2013, I won gold in maths and the year prior to that I got gold in science. “But this is the first time I’ve won three medals. Ms Harvie says it’s a matter of great pride considering the ICAS attracts two million student entries annually from about 20 countries. William adds: “I’ve been sitting the ICAS tests for the past five years. Anyone can sit them which make them so prestigious. He believes being a voracious

reader might’ve helped him rank high in English. “I don’t do textbooks but I read almost anything in fiction and nonfiction, except if it’s exceptionally easy, difficult or inappropriate, he says. At the library he often finds himself gravitating towards the maths, literacy and philosophy sections. “I like calculating things, knowing the facts and making well informed decisions. “I’m not one of those people who rush into things, he says. At school, he found the investigation involved in moving the Christchurch Cathedral and the John Forbes Nash Jr “research on the game theory that takes a rational approach to a problem

very interesting. “It’s okay if you don’t understand it. Even my maths teacher admits she couldn’t understand it completely, he says, smiling. The last time William watched television was during election time last September. Apart from reading, he plays football and baseball “to keep fit and also strums the guitar. The young scholar admits that it’s only recently he realised that scoring a high distinction in five out of six subjects is not something everyone can achieve. “I’ve always been in the top 1 per cent. When I got a high distinction in year 4 in the ICAS exams, I didn’t appreciate that it’s extremely difficult for most students. Now I do.

BEAUTIFUL PLACE: Motuihe Island is a jewel in Auckland’s inner Hauraki Gulf.

Photo supplied

Unspoilt gem’s a treasure MANY residents of Howick look out at Motuihe Island. How long is it since they have actually visited the island? Without your own boat, it’s difficult to get to Motuihe as there is an infrequent ferry service. This makes this little jewel in the inner Hauraki Gulf even more of a gem as it’s unspoilt. There’s none of Waiheke Island’s cafÊ scene there, just nature at its best. Motuihe has the best beaches, pristine white sand and clean water, and because of the layout of the narrow island, one side is always sheltered. Over the past 14 years, thousands of trees have been planted by hundreds of volunteers. There is now a well formed bush walk with informative signage explaining the birdlife and identifying the trees.

Inconsiderate drivers

I HAVE a gorgeous nine-month-old daughter and four Baby On Board signs displayed on my car, which no other drivers care less about. Living in East Auckland, I drive often locally and into the city. I always get tailgated and intimidated to drive faster than the speed limit. I’ve been tooted at numerous times for not pulling out when the car/s behind me thought I should have – I pull out when I feel comfortable to do so. A women honked her horn and called me a ******* **** as she zoomed past in the right-hand lane for not turning left as soon as the green arrow appeared. I thought displaying more than one or two signs would make the drivers behind me think “oh okay, there is a mother with her child in that car driving to the road rules, so I should let her be and switch lanes or chill out. I’ve had to pull over a few times to calm down or to cry from men abusing me – the anger makes me cry sometimes. I’ve been called obscene things and flipped the bird from quite a few male drivers, which really bothered me. Being 25 and having had my full licence for years, I’m a good driver, a great driver in fact. I always drive to the speed limit and conditions and am aware of my surroundings. But apparently, at least in Auck-

Several species have been released including kiwi, saddlebacks, bellbirds, kakariki, geckos and tuataras. The birdsong is now significant, and there is a well marked loop track right around the island. Apart from nature, Motuihe has a fascinating history which is explained with signage on the western headland. Maori pa sites, a quarantine station, a First World War prison camp, prisoner escapes, and a navy base are only some of the activities that have been located on this little island. Motuihe is well worth a visit. Fiona Alexander, Auckland

land, the speed is around 20kph over what the signs display, and you should always pull out in front of other drivers because you are in such a mega rush that waiting 10 more seconds is just unbearable to think of. Grrr! Lucy Star, Howick

Public ownership

IN BUCKLANDS Beach, at the corner of Musick Point Road and Clovelly Road, lies a piece of land that has for years been the playground of local children. It has hosted generations of cricket matches, soccer games and provided a fun playing space for family picnics. For the past three months it has remained unmown, unkempt, unable to be used for any games, and now with the heat of the summer it’s drying out so quickly that it poses a real fire risk. We have made enquiries about the lack of maintenance and tried to find out who is responsible for the mowing. The city plan classifies this area as Crown land. However, we have just been informed by the Auckland Council that the ownership is actually under negotiation. If this is so, why has the public not been notified? The houses on Musick Point have, I believe, already been gifted as part of a Treaty Settlement. We believe it’s essential that this piece of land, as the only flat area

clear of trees on the peninsula, remains under council or Crown ownership to meet the needs of the general public. Linley and Les Jones, Bucklands Beach

Crude decision

THE decision to go ahead with the BP filling station is a failure of democracy (Times, January 8). The community did not want this station: there were 840 submissions opposed to it. This is a poor decision motivated only by money and big business. It will make Pakuranga Road more industrialised. Where were our Auckland councillors and the politicians? They are our watchdogs to ensure sensible development of their responsible areas and to provide sensible counsel on such issues. To stand on the fence because a matter is controversial is a cop-out. How did the council agree to this? Sure BP has mitigated some aspects of the design, but mitigation is not good enough for the residents and school that have a service station on their doorstep. Is this a good time to be opening petrol stations? BP is looking at job cuts in the United Kingdom because of the falling price of Brent Crude. Why waste good money on stations that we already have enough of? Rather, save some jobs. Steve Lincoln, Botany Downs

OT getting 40 winks is making us unhappy, with more than half of Aucklanders saying they feel sad or depressed as a result of missing out on sleep. A newly released survey, commissioned by local sleep support company Tru2U, found that 58 per cent of those living in the Auckland region have felt low due to not getting enough sleep. Many of the super-city residents don’t get enough shuteye to operate at their peak physical or mental capacity either, with six out of 10 (60 per cent) believing they don’t get adequate sleep or feel well rested. It also revealed more than half of Aucklanders (59 per cent) struggle to get to sleep at night or have a family member who is left counting sheep every evening. But the dangers of not getting enough sleep are much more than just feeling down the next day. Along with low moods, scientists have also linked a lack of quality sleep with numerous health issues, including a higher likelihood of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Recent research has even suggested a link between less sleep and conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. According to the survey, nearly three-quarters of Auckland dwellers (74 per cent) get between five and seven hours of sleep every night, with just 24 per cent saying they get eight hours or more. This is despite experts recommending eight hours for most adults in order to feel rested and refreshed in the morning.

BEDTIME: People who don’t get a decent and regular night’s sleep can feel irritable, vulnerable to stress, and more susceptible to negative thinking. Photo supplied

“Many scientific studies have shown that a lack of quality sleep can cause mood swings, and particularly make people feel irritable, vulnerable to stress, and more susceptible to negative thinking, says Tru2u’s Simon Musgrave. “This research shows that for Aucklanders, this is definitely true. He says while seven hours may possibly be enough for some people, getting less than eight hours sleep is generally “selling yourself short. “Most people need eight hours or more in order to feel their best, perform at their best, and be at their healthiest. “Kiwis are active and leading busy lives, which means we need to give our bodies the chance to relax,

recover and heal overnight. “Kiwis need to make quality sleep a priority, much the same as including exercise and healthy eating, in order to feel both happy and healthy, says Mr Musgrave. “An unbroken and deep sleep helps maintain our hormonal balance, manage our weight, and enhance our memory. “People who start to sleep regularly and in a healthy routine will feel the benefits in many areas of their life very quickly. He recommends that Aucklanders establish a regular bedtime and wake-up time that allows for at the very least seven hours sleep each night, and look for natural ways to aid them if they have difficulty getting a quality sleep.

BEFORE AND AFTER: Fifteen students and teacher Sam Lyford got matching haircuts as part of their Shave for a Cure fundraising drive.

EXCITED: Olivia Benns gets her ponytail chopped off.

HE Shelly Park Primary School community has collected more than double its fundraising target for the Shave for a Cure campaign. Fifteen students along with teacher Sam Lyford had their heads shaved last month to raise money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ (LBC). The team started getting sponsorship for the hair shaving five months ago and set an initial goal of $4000. When the time came to having their locks clipped the total was $8433. “$8000 is a lot of money,” says Mr Lyford. “I’ve always seen the cause and thought, ‘what better time to do it with the school community behind us’. “I know leukaemia and blood cancer affects a lot of people. “We got a few kids involved and

some community spirit going.” The challenge was put out to senior pupils in years 5-6 and the 15 brave souls signed up. “The week before the shaving they were starting to get nervous,” says Mr Lyford. As well as the sheering session, the school had a funky hair day during which pupils paid a gold coin donation to be able to wear their tresses in crazy colours and styles. Mr Lyford was one of the top three fundraisers with $1380, along with the two girls who took part, Olivia Benns ($1900) and Jasmine Rewcastle ($930). Jasmine sought donations from friends, family and neighbours, and posted her philanthropic mission on social media. “I thought it would be cool to

shave my head for cancer,” says the 10-year-old. “I was really nervous. My friends were saying ‘don’t do it’, and others were saying it was for a good cause. “I was worried that it would hurt but it didn’t.” The haircuts were watched by a throng of supportive parents and there was a strong sense of camaraderie on display among those getting shaved. “My mum was proud of me and my sister thought it would look really weird,” says Jasmine. Shave for a Cure is LBC’s signature fundraising event and helps the charity organisation, which receives no government funding, support patients living with a blood cancer or a related blood condition and their families.

BRAVE: Jasmine Rewcastle anxiously awaits her new look.

14 — Howick and Pakuranga Times, Monday, January 19, 2015

Avoid deathly pool water traps need consent or a fence. But, the council says, any pool is still a hazard, so it may be prudent to empty them when not supervised, or place a heavy cover over the top to prevent a small child falling in.

SWIMMING pool safety legislation introduced in 1987 has helped to reduce the number of young children drowning in home pools considerably. In the 10 years to 1982 more than 100 children drowned in home pools. But numbers fell to 30 in the 10 years to 2012.

If the water depth is over 40 centimetres, fencing rules apply and the pool will need a building consent.

Denise Krum, deputy chair of Auckland Council’s regulatory and bylaws committee, says fencing swimming pools and ensuring gates are closed has made a significant difference. Simple precautions, she says, can make all the difference, such as appropriate fencing, self-closing gates, making sure there are no toys or plant pots next to the fence for little ones to use as a leg up, and active supervision of children at all times. It’s also important for pool owners to register their pool with the council. Jonny Gritt, chief executive of WaterSafe Auckland (WAI) says the regulations are in place to help and protect children, not to interfere with peoples’ enjoyment of the water. “The bottom line,” he says, “is that there is no substitute for close, active adult supervision to keep our tamariki safer in, on and around home pools.”

Because of wear and tear or ground movement, gates around pools can shift and sometimes stop closing. Fences are also subject to damage, so by law councils have to inspect pools to ensure the safety measures are in place.

POOL SAFETY: Check swimming pool fences and gates to ensure children are protected. Ian McCormick, the council’s building control general manager says the council encourages owners to carry out regular maintenance of pool fencing and gates to ensure they are still safe between three-yearly inspections. For the fence or barrier to be considered effective, it must be at least 1.2 metres high, no gap of more than 10 centimetres between the ground and the bottom of the fence, and

a minimum distance of 90 centimetres between any climb points or footholds, such as lateral supports, straps, or pipes, and the top of the fence. Gates must automatically close and latch. “Most problems can be avoided with simple checks and fixes, especially around the gate,” he says. “It’s also important for people to register their pool with

the council so we have a record of it.” Responsibilities are the same whether the pool is a traditional permanent fixture in the ground, or one of the many inflatable or frame pools, ranging from simple paddling pools to large seven metre-long structures. When the water levels in inflatable or frame pools are kept below 40 cm, the pool will not

The council’s initial inspections are free, with re-testing requiring a fee. So, the council says, it pays to make the simple checks. Council pool safety inspectors can provide free advice to make sure pools are safe and can make advisory visits on Saturdays by appointment. People can register their pool or check if an existing pool is already registered by phoning the council on 301-0101. More details are online by searching for ‘pools and spas’ at www.aucklandcouncil.co.nz.

Correze destined to be baseballer By Daniel Silverton

C

ORREZE Nepia discovered baseball by chance, but has become one of the country’s top prospects on the mound and at the plate. The 15-year-old from Cockle Bay was named on an extended roster for the New Zealand 18-and-under (18U) team competing at the Oceania Championships starting this Friday at McLeod Park, Te Atatu. He first joined the Howick Pakuranga Hawks in the under-11 grade, though he could have easily ended up playing the other diamond sport. His family was driving past the club’s Lloyd Elsmore Park fields and saw teeball being played. Thinking it was softball, they went in to sign up Correze and his younger brother Keaton, and found out it was baseball territory. The mix-up has turned out positive for the Hawks, New Zealand baseball and Correze, who has gone on to travel the world as a regular in national age-group teams.

In 2010, he attended the World Children’s Baseball Fair in Japan. He was selected in the NZ Little League teams to play in Guam and Taiwan in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Last year, he went to Mexico for the 15-and-under world championships. He has won three New Zealand titles with club teams, and was named most valuable player of the national under-15 tournament last year. He has become adept at a number of positions, playing catcher, first base and outfield, and is a valuable commodity as a lefthanded pitcher, throwing a fastball, slider and change-up. Despite not attending tryouts for the 18U team due to being at the younger end of the selection

range, he was asked to join an initial squad of 30 players because of a shortage of left-handed hurlers. “He didn’t trial because he thought he was so far outside the team that there would be no point, New Zealand 18U head coach Dan Tan told the Times. “But we have no tall left-handed pitchers, so I invited him to come and work out with us. Correze says: “It was amazing, I was really surprised. I was fortunate to get in. Following a two-week training camp prior to Christmas, he survived the first cut to 25 players, who were put through their paces last week ahead of the final 20-man squad being named. Despite being one of the youngest vying for a spot, Correze held his own

CORREZE NEPIA Times photo Daniel Silverton

against players who are older and more experienced. “I was definitely nervous, he says. “You know you have to put your best foot forward. It was a big step for me. He narrowly missed out on a place in the team, but can still take part as an alternate player. “He came in and did everything we’ve asked of him, worked his backside off and has just been pipped at the post, says Tan. “He will still be part of the team and sit in the dugout. If there is an injury to a guy who plays his position he will be the next in line. Correze will still be eligible to make the next 18U team which will attempt to qualify for the world cup in Canada in 2017. “Because of his height and his long levers, he’s going to project into a hard thrower, says Tan. “He has really good mechanics. As he develops in stature, he will also develop in velocity. “He’s got a great work ethic and has a good future in the sport.

Knocked out of Twenty20 finals A STEADY innings by former Black Cap Tim McIntosh has seen Howick Pakuranga eliminated from Auckland Cricket’s Twenty20 competition. Howick Pakuranga faced last year’s runners-up Parnell in the quarter-finals at Lloyd Elsmore Park last Wednesday. Missing from Howick Pakuranga’s line-up were a number of in-form regulars, including Dale and Glenn Phillips, who were on age-group representative duty, and Shawn Hicks. The home side won the toss and

elected to bat, but were frustrated by Parnell’s tidy bowling. They struggled to 50-4 in the 10th over, with opener Bill Walsh looking good before playing the ball onto his stumps on 23. Auckland Aces player Colin de Grandhomme top scored with 33 from 23 deliveries in Howick Pakuranga’s total of 120-8. In reply, Parnell’s McIntosh and George Harper Jnr made an opening stand of 40, with the latter out for a rapid-fire 26 from 15 balls. McIntosh went on to anchor the innings, hitting 46 at a strike-rate of 88.

Parnell cruised to the victory in 16 overs, finishing on 123-2. Howick Pakuranga used seven bowlers in the attempt to halt the run chase, with Rowan Naude and de Grandhomme each claiming a wicket. Auckland representative Donovan Grobbelaar was the most economical, allowing just 20 runs from his four overs. In the other quarter-finals, Cornwall inflicted a heavy defeat on Papatoetoe, defending champions Suburbs New Lynn beat Takapuna, and Waitakere got past Birkenhead.

TOO CLOSE: Howick Pakuranga opener Bill Walsh is dismissed after cutting a delivery onto his stumps. Times photo Daniel Silverton

HP Hawks to train youth THIS year’s Train with the Pros baseball road show is a predominantly Kiwi affair, featuring a number of Howick Pakuranga Hawks players. Major League Baseball (MLB) and Baseball New Zealand are teaming up to present the training camps, which in the past have had the likes of MLB stars Curtis Granderson, Mark Melancon and Paul Goldschmidt attending. This year, the week of world-class baseball instruction for junior players aged up to 18 features NZ Diamondblacks players, alongside some of the country’s top coaches. Among the ANDREW line-up is Baseball MARCK NZ development officers Dan Tan and Riki Paewai, who will be joined by Diamondblacks Jamie Wilson, Te Wera Bishop, Marko Lezaic, Boss Moanaroa, Alan Schoenberger, and Andrew Marck. They will be supplemented by former minor leaguers Randy Yard (Cincinnati Reds) and Nick Stanley (Houston Astros), ex-Chiba Lotte Marines, Yokohama Baystars, and Japanese national team pitcher Naoyuki Shimizu. Tan, Wilson and Marck are all Howick Pakuranga products, while Moanaroa and Bishop have been on the books of the Boston Red Sox. Baltimore Orioles Oceania scout and coach Brett Ward will assist and keep his eyes peeled for talent. The clinics kicked off yesterday in Christchurch and are at Lloyd Elsmore Park today before heading to McLeod Park, Te Atatu, for the next two days.

ARSH Motorsport has written another chapter in the drag racing history books. The East Tamaki-based team, lead by Tony Marsh with son Anthony behind the wheel, is the first to record a four-second pass in New Zealand. At the Nitro Shootout at Meremere Dragway on January 10, the Marsh’s top fuel dragster covered the quarter mile in 4.98 seconds at 288mph (465kph). The car, propelled by an 8000horsepower supercharged Chrysler Hemi engine, was bought two years ago specifically to try and be the first Kiwis to go under the five second mark. “Top fuel cars are the Formula 1 of drag racing, Anthony told the Times. “That’s the fastest car on the planet that you can buy. “We did a four-second pass last year, but the timing boards didn’t work so it wasn’t official. There are just two opportunities each year to race the machine, which runs on nitromethane. The track was too hot for its first pass at the Nitro Shootout, where the Marsh crew was up against the only other top fuel car in New Zealand, driven by Reece Fish. The conditions were just right for the second and final pass later in the day. “Everything came down to the last run, says Anthony, 27. The record time was set despite the engine blowing up just before the finish line.

“It’s like an explosion behind you. It felt like someone hit me in the back of the head with a baseball bat. “From supercharger to sump, everything is garbage. “There are lots of souvenirs. We are selling bits of it on Trade Me. People will love to have something off the first four-second pass car. Anthony wasn’t aware of his time until he saw the reactions of his teammates. “It felt alright, but as soon as I saw the crew with huge smiles running at me, I knew instantly that I must’ve run four seconds. “There was a massive crowd. Everyone got up and cheered, it was like being in a movie. It was unreal. “It still hasn’t sunk in really.

ANTHONY AND TONY MARSH

You’re a superhero one day, then Monday rolls around and you’re back at work. Marsh Motorsport has a number of other records including the fastest naturally aspirated small block engine in the world with a

199.12mph pass, and its top alcohol car is the quickest outside of the USA with a run of 5.403 seconds. With the help of sponsors Mount Shop and Segedin’s Auto Spares, the $70,000 rebuild is under way for a crack at the next goal. “The main aim of that car was to get a four-second pass, says Anthony. “Now that we’ve done that, we want to go 300mph. That’s a big thing in drag racing because not a lot of people do it.
