uckland Mayor Len Brown believes there is a common perception that the council has ballooning costs, staff and debt. Delivering his proposals for the 2016/2017 annual plan, he says the amalgamation of the legacy councils is painted as having not delivered on the expected efficiency, “and if you were to
believe some commentary, to have delivered less projects and services than those legacy councils” “It is as exasperating as it is untrue.” The mayor’s proposal sets out a list of myths doing the rounds and provides information to challenge them. ■ Since the Super City was formed, rates have gone up faster than under the legacy coun-

cils: Former councils’ projected average rate increases were as high as six per cent in 2011/2012 compared with the LTP level for 2016/2017 of 3.2 per cent. ■ Costs are out of control: More than $200 million of efficiency savings have been achieved annually so far while a city the size of Tauranga has been added to Auckland. Per capita operating expenditure (excluding interest and depreciation) is just under
$1400 in 2015 compared with $1600 in 2010. ■ Debt is spiralling out of control: In the 2015-2025 LTP debt is programmed to be capped at 12 per cent of the city’s total revenue, significantly down from 15 per cent in the previous LTP. The interest to revenue ratio is forecast to reach 12 per cent in 2017/2018 and 2018/2019, and then drop to 11.3 per cent in 2024/2025. ➤ Turn to Page 2

The driver of a light commercial truck had a lucky escape after the unit’s cab went up in flames. The driver, believed to be from an East Tamaki company, is understood to have called his boss to advise him the truck was overheating last Thursday. He was told to pull the light truck over. He did so on Ti Rakau Drive around 1pm near the Eat Asian food precinct at the Hub at Botany. He managed to get out of the vehicle with paperwork before the truck’s cab was consumed by fire. An electrical fault is thought to be to blame. Traffic heading west seemed to have only been hampered for a short time while police and the fire service dealt with the matter.

Ann dies after reaching 100th After making it to her 100th birthday on January 1, Ann Rogers passed away exactly a week later on January 8. While most of us were nursing hangovers on New Year’s Day, Ann – from Howick - was celebrating her 100th birthday in Highland Park surrounded by her family, some of whom had travelled from Australia and Wales. Ann’s daughter Robyn says her mum was very determined to reach her
100th birthday and her family are so proud of her for reaching her goal. “The thing most mentioned at Mum’s funeral and the thing I loved most about her was her sense of humour right up until a couple of days before she passed away,” Robyn says. “She was a very family-oriented person and loved watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren growing up. “In latter years she had
been quite immobile, but we are convinced that the secret to her long life was the huge amount of walking she did up to her mid 60s and the endless cups of tea she enjoyed. “She was a fairly solitary person, and enjoyed sewing, reading, (was) a prolific knitter and loved her word puzzles. Her biggest enjoyment in later years was to be taken out for a coffee where she could people watch,” Robyn says.
Ann was born on New Year’s Day 1916 in Great Britain. She married her husband Stan in Birmingham, England, who trained pilots during WWII. They had their two eldest daughters Janet and Lesley in England before immigrating to New Zealand where she had another two daughters, Jill and Robyn. After several moves around the North Island and being widowed at 53 years, Ann moved to

delivering as much as the old councils: Over the last five years the council has started to address the shortfall of previous investment in infrastructure for current residents and the 838 people who arrive every week. The 2016/2017 annual plan includes an operating budget of $3.7 billion for day-to-day services such as maintaining roads and running libraries. Annual investment in day-to-day services is: ■■ Roads, footpaths, rail stations, wharves, ferry
facilities, busway stations $310 million ■■ Funding public transport trips - +$110 million ■■ Mowing sports and local parks - $17 million ■■ Renewing and maintaining playgrounds, aquatic and recreation centres - $18 million ■■ Running the central and local libraries - $50 million ■■ Water and sewage services - +$200 million ■■ Rubbish, recycling and inorganic collections - $90 million ■■ Assistance to major facilities: Auckland War Memorial Museum $29m, MOTAT $12m, Auckland
Zoo $8m, Auckland Art Gallery $11m ■■ $60 million of grants to regional and local community arts and cultural groups and facilities such as Howick Historical Village ■■ $18 million in 2016 on major and regional events including the NRL 9s, Pukekohe V8s, Pasifika Festival, World Masters Games preparation
Capital investment
A capital programme of $1.9 billion includes a transport programme of $720 million, water and wastewater of $440 million and investment in parks, sport
and recreation of $170 million. Investment includes projects spanning multiple years, such as the City Rail Link (CRL) and the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI). Capital work in the southeast will continue on developing the Ormiston Town Centre at Flat Bush and the Flat Bush main street collector link. Over the last five years the council has had a capital spend of: ■■ Roads and footpaths, including continued investment in the AMETI project
– close to $1 billion.

Bird sanctuary closes doors By Farida Master
W
hitford’s Wild Bird Care Centre is shutting its doors. The rescued birds have now been moved to the Green Bay Rescue Centre. Times had a quick chat with Mandy Robertson, founding member, trustee and treasurer of the Wild Bird Care Charitable Trust in Whitford about the decision to close the Bird Rescue Centre and not offer shelter to injured birds from the public. The first volunteers of the rescue centre started in 2003 by Ms Robertson, her husband and her mother-in-law, were children. “They helped with the cleaning and feeding on weekends
and after school, but as the bird numbers grew we found that we needed more permanent and long-term help,” she says. “So we started recruiting folk who brought in the patients. During the height of the baby season we would have up to three volunteers a day, including children.” Sharing some of the memorable moments of running the centre she says that they would often get calls from people saying they had found a Kiwi. “The first time we received a call like this we were flat panic… what do we do?” However when the little patient arrived, they opened the box to discover it was a hedgehog! “This happened regularly but
we always gave the same instructions on how to care for the Kiwi until it was brought to us. “Until one day we opened the box and it was a real Kiwi...panic! We stabilised the chick, contacted Department of Conservation and the wee one went off to Auckland zoo. Now that was an awesome moment!” Sadly, over the years the centre was battling to cope with the increasing number of birds that needed urgent attention. Talking about the tough decision they made she says: “We tried making various changes in an attempt to reduce the growing number of birds coming into care. Unfortunately, with not being able to say ‘no’ to little ones in need, the numbers continued
to increase. “Also, with the loss of a loved family member in 2014, it highlighted the need for some normality in our lives and the ability to spend time with family as one never knows how long we have with family. “It was a difficult decision but we believe it was the right one for us at this time.” The centre has now changed tracks. While saying no to injured birds, it will continue to offer support by hosting hands-on workshops and seminars. “We are fortunate to have companies that continue to support us by donating supplies. We, in turn, distribute these items to organisations and individuals in need.”

Its unpredictable nature means the location, size and intensity of future eruptions are uncertain. Auckland’s weather is relatively unpredictable and can change quickly. Dominated by westerly systems originating in the Tasman Sea, the prevailing west to southwesterly winds can produce strong wind gusts, rough seas and persistent rainfall. During summer and autumn, Auckland can be affected

But the coasts and large harbours put Auckland at risk from erosion, coastal inundation and tsunami. Being close to the collision point of two large tectonic plates, some of the northern communities are exposed to large tsunamis. More commonly, storms can hit the region relatively frequently. Other significant hazards are prolonged drought, lifeline utility failure, biosecurity

Auckland’s extensive infrastructure network is vulnerable because some networks rely on external supplies and the geography creates ‘chokepoints’. Utilities rely on other utilities to maintain services. For example, about 95 per cent of Auckland’s fuel is supplied from Marsden Point

Aucklanders have a lower level of personal preparedness for a disaster than many other parts of New Zealand. Yet Auckland is susceptible to a wide variety of disasters, a recently-released Civil Defence and Emergency Management Plan says. They range from infrequent events, such as eruptions in the Auckland volcanic field, earthquakes and tsunami, to regular events such as flooding, electricity outages and fire. The city lies on an active volcanic field which last erupted about 550 years ago. With 56 volcanoes, Auckland’s

Heritage house to go By Marianne Kelly
O
ne of the last farm houses left in the Flat Bush-East Tamaki area is set to be demolished. Auckland Council has approved consent for bulk earthworks on the privately-owned site where Gillard House sits at 39 Flat Bush School Road. Removal of the house is a permitted activity and subdivision consent has been lodged with the council. So far no decision has been made about the application, a council spokesperson says. Howick historian Alan La Roche says the Gillard farm house has been in poor condition for several years.
It was built by John and Susannah Gillard who came from England in 1864 on the sailing ship “Bombay” with settlers for the Waikato Immigration Scheme. They arrived on March 18, 1865. After working in the Drury area for four years, they bought the land on the corner of Flat Bush School and Chapel Roads. The farm house was built in 1869 and they raised eight children, Jane, Mary, John, William, Arthur, Charles, Tom and Emily. The Flat Bush property was farmed by the Gillard family until 1966. A Flat Bush Built Heritage Review was written in 2010 by Reynolds & Associates for the then Manukau
City Council. Gillard House was one of the existing identified built heritage features in the council’s District Plan which were reviewed to confirm whether their continued protection was warranted. The report concluded that significant alterations to the house, particularly to the joinery and interior plan, had occurred since it was built and the loss of historic fabric that had resulted from those alterations had diminished its cultural heritage value. Consequently the recommendation was that the house not be scheduled for protection in the Manukau District Plan. The Gillard story can be found in Jennifer Clark’s book East Tamaki.

Butler’s coveted collection to feature at classic car show By Marianne Kelly Clive Butler was a little fellow when his interest in classic cars was aroused. Marriage to Lyn, emigration to New Zealand in 1969, and bringing up a family got in the way for a few years. But his dream became a reality in 1999 when Master Manufacturing, the company he bought 10 years before, invested in storage space at an East Tamaki complex. “It was always in my mind that it [the 300 square metre storage unit] would be good as a car workshop,” Mr Butler says. “I always had a passion

orthpark residents Harish Sharma and his wife Meher weren’t prepared for what they discovered in their fruit juice box. What they got out their Just Juice box wasn’t but pure gunk which they discovered when they poured out a glass of orange juice from the carton they’d bought from the local supermarket. Whilst pouring a second glass of juice they noticed something suspiciously clunky inside the tetrapak carton. To be on the safe side, they cut it open. The Sharmas were shocked to find a big block of green-blue coloured slimy slush staring back at them. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it sitting at the bottom of the carton,” says Mr Sharma, team leader with wholesale tool supplier Fox & Gunn. The couple shot a video of the sludge which they poured into a plate and posted on Facebook. The juice has not passed the useby date. The couple called the manufacturer Frucor after finding the dangerous-looking remnants in their drink. They were informed that it was holiday period and someone would look into the matter and return their call. But nothing has happened. They followed it up with another call. “The person on the other side of the line was quite rude,” says Mr Sharma. Finally, one of their work colleagues posted the video on the Just Juice Facebook page. It was after word got around with friends and colleagues that Belinda Mitchell from Frucor Beverages called the couple who had been waiting for the company’s personnel to take responsibility. “I wanted to draw their atten-

tion since I was concerned that there may be other spoilt cartons and the company may need to withdraw them from the market,” says Mrs Sharma, who got the feeling that no one was taking heed of their complaint. “Also, I was worried that it may have some after-effects,” she says. “Though they tried to brush aside my concerns, I insisted that they send the yucky sludge for testing and let me know the contents.” “The lady from Frucor tried to convince me that it’s ok since nothing had happened to us. She said that even if there is pin hole in the carton it leads to spoilage. “She compared it to eating a rotten apple saying sometimes you eat an apple which looks fine and then discover that it is rotten on the other side.” The Sharmas said that the company promised to send them a zip lock bag by courier and a voucher but they hadn’t received anything as yet. However, by the time the story went to press the couple did receive a voucher for three, one litre bottles of Just Juice along with a zip lock bag for the dry contents. When contacted Ms Mitchell said she would ask the corporate affairs and communication manager Bridget Beaurepaire to get in touch with the Times for further comment.

Now that’s a top shot Enthusiasm can get you a long way as David McIntosh explains. He is the one whose photos are on this year’s Howick calendars which are available in wall A4 size or desk size. Up until recently it was only really a hobby. “A few years ago I was in a café and I saw a photo of the motorway at night, which had the light trails from the cars head and tail lights (see my pic attached on my $200 camera),” he explains. “Straight away I thought, ’I want to know how to do that’, so when I

got home that night I went straight onto Google to find out how.” “From here I went on Trade Me, bought a cheap camera and tripod for a couple of hundred dollars and started giving it a go. “The biggest difference is that I’ve gone from spending $200, into spending thousands of dollars on cameras and equipment, but it’s all worth it when you get that perfect shot.” There are a limited number of calendars available at Spillers Hardware and also at Saturday’s market on several stalls.

cracker: Free cultural performances celebrate the Asian Lunar New Year at LunarFest.
Photo supplied
Annual LunarFest comes to town F
estivities, food and fun are all going to burst into action to celebrate the Asian Lunar New Year. On Saturday January 30 the stage and surrounds of Vodafone Events Centre at Manukau will be bustling with free cultural performances, pop music and family entertainment – topped off with a fireworks display. The year of the monkey officially starts on February 8 and the local Chinese television station, World TV, is pulling out all of the tricks to make sure the annual LunarFest is a cracker.
From 3pm to 11pm there will be free entertainment, masses of exhibitors, traditional Asian foods from several different countries and cultural products on offer. General manager Samson Yau says the Lunar New Year is celebrated by Chinese from across Asia, but also the Korean and Japanese communities. The LunarFest started in 2008 at Vodafone Events Centre and has been a huge success in the past few years. “World TV continues to arrange LunarFest to foster understanding and appre-
ciation for the Asian calendar highlight, and to encourage cultural integration,” says Mr Yau. In addition, World TV invites and promotes the LunarFest to all ethnicities including Maori, Pakeha, Pacific Islanders and Indians, among others. It’s a fun day out with entertainment for the whole family to celebrate the occasion at a great venue and in a unique format. ■■ 3pm-11pm, Saturday, January 30, Vodafone Events Centre, 770 Great South Road, Manukau. Waterway not driveway Residents at a Pakuranga Road property must have been wondering if they were in urban Auckland or at the end of a dairy farm cow race by the amount of water sloshing down their driveway since Christmas. It wasn’t a torrent, but enough to be a nuisance. And worse, Watercare was notified on Boxing Day and again on Monday this week. The answer then was that the leak was not a priority. The Times found the water leak on the grass berm outside the property just before the Panmure Bridge after local resident, Brian Mackereth who regularly runs past the
property, alerted us. He said the leak had been there since before Christmas and the property owner reported it to Watercare on Boxing Day. By the start of this week no repairs had been made so Mr Mackereth phoned Watercare and was told the job was not considered a priority. By the end of Monday afternoon, after the Times contacted Watercare, a spokesperson said the leaking pipe had been repaired. “We received notice of the leak among a large number of high priority jobs over the holiday
2 for
5
period,” the spokesperson said. “Unfortunately this particular leak was not picked up as a high priority and we are investigating the matter with our contractors. “We would like to apologise to the residents of 7 Pakuranga Road for any inconvenience caused.”
Mr Butler is currently president of the Alvis Car Club and on the organising committee of the Daimler Car Club. “It’s good fun,” he says. “That’s the nicest thing about old cars, the people and the fun. It’s a very social interest.” He’s disappointed that, like many service clubs, the car clubs are failing to attract new younger members. “To get younger ones involved and stay is quite difficult,” he says. “People in our era felt they had a public responsibility to do outside works. There is a lack of enthusiasm now for service clubs.”
■■ Richard Waugh, chairman of the Auckland Classic Brit & Euro Car Show committee says about 200 car entries are firmed up and there are high hopes for many more. The show will be held on March 6 at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Public entry to the show is free and donations to an annual nominated charity will be sought with the 2016 funds raised going to the Howick Historical Village. ■■ Car enthusiasts can register online at www. briteurocarshow.nz. Mr Waugh can be contacted by phoning 533-9500 (pvt), 2739044 (bus), or email rjw@ ecw.org.nz.

A 1937 BSA saloon is another of Mr Butler’s work in progress. “I took a truck to Wellington and picked it up in boxes. It’s not quite completed yet.” His favourite car, he says, is the 1923 Alvis. “But I like them all. They all have their own charm.” The fifth entry to the show is a 1965 2.5V8 Daimler which Mr Butler uses on the road occasionally. However the main roaduser car is the 1963 Alvis which has done three trips to the South Island as part of the Alvis Car Club’s annual road trip programme.

Feedback Tai chi for impaired
A tai chi master in Auckland contacted council to offer Tai chi lessons for physically impaired people. I know that there’s not a generic group of wheelchair users though, as one’s impairment or capability could be quite unique. If you and/or your agency wish to pick up on this offer to provide a meeting and exercise space and to liaise with the instructor, please let me know and I’ll get you in touch with him. They’re keen to do group work with physically impaired persons to see how Taichi could be of benefit. Hoping to hear from you soon to this regard. Bring back inorganics
This and other similar problems throughout what was previously Manukau City is the direct result of the new Super City’s leaders’ irrational decision to stop inorganic rubbish collections. While in no way condoning illegal dumping, if the council reintroduced the previous collection system, people simply wouldn’t need to dump. The new ‘home collection’ alternative system introduced by council isn’t at all userfriendly as clearly evidenced by new and growing piles of inorganic matter throughout what was Manukau. Basically the old adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it” should apply and annual collections should be rein-

Do you know where this photo is? I am Diana Hodgson (now of Rotorua) and I am trying to find the photo of mum which I took of her in the shop Hodgsons’ Home Sewing Centre on Moore St. I took this photo the day before her funeral on July 8, 2007 at All Saints Church. My sister-in-law Chris ran the shop for five years from 1994 to 1999. When a man bought the shop, I was told a customer of mum’s was allowed to take it by said owner when he sold the shop. It became a travel business. We would like the photo back to be placed where most troduced with a degree of urgency. John Whitehead
Stranger danger
I think parents need to remind their children about the dangers of what could happen if they get in a car with a stranger or wave at a stranger. I have had men wave at me who are strangers. It has never got beyond that, because I have been taught how to handle it. This hasn’t happened to me in poorer suburbs, but in areas that are middle-upper class in total daylight. I catch buses often, but I would rather catch the bus than get in the car with a stranger. I know bus drivers are strangers (and sometimes grumpy to people just for getting on

Both children and adults stand to gain a great deal from practising martial arts, judo in particular. Since it began in 1969, Howick Judo Club has produced disciplined, dedicated students and champions across East Auckland. Originally held at Owairoa Primary School, the academy has been running classes from the Howick Recreation Centre since 1976. The club is now owned by sensei Lawrie Crooke who took over from founder Ivan Willis in 2005. Lawrie, Ivan’s former student, says he first caught the judo bug when his eldest son started taking classes. “I used to keep an eye on some of the kids before finding myself on the mat,” says the former president of the Auckland Judo Association. He says for children, judo is life-changing. “Over the years, I’ve seen Owner sensei Lawrie Crooke. some really terrified, shy children who have come to us but “You’ve got to enjoy what you after a few sessions they come out do if you’re going to be any good at of the shell. Lawrie is exceptionally proud of his students who continue to do well at championships both regionally and nationally. “We have people of all shapes and sizes, from all cultures and walks of life and we learn how to respect ourselves, respect each other as well as how to deal with conflict.” The Howick Judo Club is part of Judo New Zealand which is part of the International Judo Federation. Both Lawrie and instructor Craig Bartlett are 3rd degree black belts and hold Level 3 coaching degrees, and Craig is an international referee for judo competitions. Importantly, they believe that all children should do judo. “Through judo, they know their limits and know where they stand which is important through all stages of growing up.”

Ten years ago director of Dance Xpress Claire Sciascia wanted to create a place where students could share their passion and love for dance, where they could be inspired and learn in a fun and positive way and most of all a place where they could DANCE and XPRESS themselves with confidence. Claire Sciascia, who trained as a primary school teacher, never made into the school classroom, instead Dance Xpress was born! “It was the best decision I ever made starting DX and has always been like a dream come true,” Claire explains. Over the years thousands of dance moves have been taught, hundreds of dances have been choreographed and hundreds of students have called DX a home away from home and many lifelong friendships have been formed. “I have got to watch amazing young students grow into amazing young adults over the years” Claire explains. “The best part, the part I love, is watching them grow in confidence as their love of dance grows too!” Dance Xpress specialises in teaching Jazz, Hip Hop, Musical theatre and technical styles of dancing for students of all ages. There are recreational classes for students who are just starting out and competition classes for students who are wanting to take their dance skills to the next level. A boys-only Hip Hop class runs on a Tuesday after school and a new adults fun class is starting up on Thursday evenings 7-8pm. For a full list of classes visit www.dancexpress.co.nz.

Bringing musical dreams alive We want them to experience both world of music if they want to. “I believe that a real musician has to be well rounded in their appreciation and performance. “I have been researching and looking for other pop programmes. I found out that the TMA’s Pop Course is the only one available that exposes students to a wide range of popular styles, classical themes, jazz, blues etc. “It also gives a solid foundation in the music fundamentals of reading, ear training, arranging, improvisation and theory. At the academy, Individual and Group classes are offered. Group classes which are for pop students, are held in small groups of three and are done similar to a classroom situation, without the use of a headphone. There are two Junior programmes for children aged 4 to 7 years old.

Individual lessons are tailored depending on the programme the students are enrolled in. They are encouraged to sit in exams either at the ABRSM, Trinitiy Guildhall or Trinity Guildhall Rock and Pop. Exams are however not a requirement for students to progress. Music enjoyment is also about performance thus TMA holds regular concerts and their students are involved in community activities through music. Are you getting your money’s worth in your child’s musical education? Are they taught by teachers who are not just highly qualified but experienced? Techniques Music Academy (TMA) has built a name for its students’ high standard of classical performance. It has also been popularly known for its expertise in the pop programme, using a comprehensive education system based on today’s electronic instruments. “Music is ever changing, Marilou, the director says. “TMA offers music instruction to people of any age, level and ability. “We have a basic philosophy to bring the joy of music-making to as many people as possible and to encourage the creative potential of each of our students. “The fun environment makes it easier for young people to learn an instrument and for many adults to satisfy a lifelong ambition to play a musical instrument of their choice. “Choosing a musical programme greatly depends on what one wants to achieve musically in life. “At the academy, we want our students to learn to appreciate good music, be it classical or pop.

The New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine is offering two new diploma programmes for 2016. Students have the opportunity to study Massage Therapy either with a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective or with a Western Massage practice perspective. This opportunity is unique in New Zealand and offer students the latest qualifications in these fields. The college offers a Level 7 Diploma Course in Tuina (TCM Massage Therapy). This Diploma comprises two years of full-time study, providing a mix of theory and clinical training and leading to qualifying as a Tuina Practitioner/ Therapist. The course offered includes the latest World Health Organisation recommendations ensuring that the Diploma meets the highest international requirements in training students to become practitioners in this aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tuina (TCM Massage Therapy) is a manual technique aimed at enhancing health and treating various clinical conditions. It is one of the most commonly used modalities in the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is now practised worldwide. Tuina involves using bodywork (such as massage and acupressure) to stimulate the flow of vital energy throughout the body. Today, the field of treatment is wide ranging and also includes orthopaedics, traumatology, cosmetology, rehabilitation, sports medicine, and general health care. The qualification leads to employment opportunities both in New Zealand and internationally. From February the college will also introduce the NZ Diploma in Wellness
and Relaxation Massage Level 5. By doing so it will become the first provider in New Zealand to offer this new “NZ diploma” which is going to become the standard qualification offered by all NZQA approved massage training providers. The course includes: Biomedical Science, Massage Clinical Science, and Clinical Practicum and will be offered at both the NZCCM Greenlane Campus and in Hastings through Lotus Holistic Centre. Graduates will obtain the latest qualification in this field and open the door to a wide range of jobs in home-based massage therapy, mobile clinics, retail malls or multi-disciplinary clinics or spa-based massage therapy clinics. Recruitment and student services manager, Peter Coddington, says that the introduction of these two diplomas gives prospective students the exciting and unique opportunity to obtain a professional qualification in either the most tried and tested effective “Eastern” massage therapy in the world or the very latest accredited “Western” Massage Diploma in NZ within one teaching institution. To enrol online go to www.chinesemedicine.ac.nz. If you are interested in finding out more contact the college on 580-2376 or enrolment@chinesemedicine.ac.nz.

discovered the south-east, including the Elim Church which he now attends. He stepped down from his management role at the centre last December but continues to work on contract with special needs children at Grey Lynn, Orakei and the Otara music centre. There’s no outlet for special needs children in the south-east. He currently has spaces in his private practice available for students of all ages and abilities and hopes that eventually it will include some special-needs children. With music such a powerful influence in his life and becoming aware of the role of music therapy, he studied for a Masters of Music Therapy in Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy at the University of London in 2003. Currently he is privately teaching a youngster who has autism who, he says, seems to have found the violin fascinating, supported by his “wonderful dedicated mother. “Learning the violin has shown the challenges to him, Yid-Ee says. “If not for the violin lessons, those challenges, such as being patient, would not be so apparent. The Yid-Ee Goh violin studio is at 91 Golfland Drive, Howick, phone 021 545 436. www.colourstrings.co.nz

Violinist Yid-Ee Goh acknowledges it’s important for musical students to individually work through the grades. But that’s not the end of it all, he says, especially for string instrumentalists. “I understand the peer pressure to pass grades but that is done in isolation. Students are missing out on a lot more what music can bring to you, especially the violin or any orchestral instrument. Yid-Ee (pictured) is a recent arrival in the south-east and is embarking on a mission to establish a studio where his students and others in a collaborative arrangement with other teachers can get together to see each other play their music and get used to performing to people. For that reason he is also on the lookout for a suitable concert venue. “I would like to set up a concert series so that students can see what it’s all about, he says. “It would be an opportunity for them to play their music to the public and share their talents. “I have contact with a cello teacher and my aim is to work in collaboration with cello students. I have yet to find a piano teacher so that we could have the students work together as a string quartet or an orchestra. It will be something to challenge or extend them. “Also, for a violinist, the social side is very important, he says. “Private lessons teach the person the music and technical skills. But it all comes into context when playing with others, such as with a piano, in a string quartet or an orchestra. Yid-Ee’s zest for the performance side of musicianship comes from a solid background. His first experience was with the Wellington Youth Orchestra, followed by a 10-year permanent/casual role with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, two tours with the New Zealand String Quartet and concertmaster of the Wellington Regional Orchestra (now Orchestra Wellington). Simultaneously he has worked as a violin and viola teacher in a variety of roles and, after moving to Auckland from Wellington last year, was clinical services manager of the Grey Lynnbased Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre. Last April he and his partner bought a house in Golflands and Yid-Ee

veryone would love to have a cozy bedroom that promises relaxation and a good sleep. A bedroom should be a soothing space where you can get some well-deserved rest and a peaceful night. The key to good bedroom decor is a harmonious blend of materials, colours, patterns, and lighting. Natural wood furniture and flooring with soft area rugs offer a combination of smooth and fluffy textures, which is always easy on the eyes. You could even be daring and add touches of fur, lace, and wool. These materials are unusual, but they give cozy appeal to a room. Be particularly careful when choosing the furniture, flooring, bedspread, and window coverings; make sure they add warmth to the decor. For example, a padded headboard gives a comfortable look, and cushions and welcoming throws are inviting for a comfy lay-down. Another great way to add warmth to a room is to use curtains or draperies that fall from ceiling to floor and cover the entire width of the wall. For the bed, create multiple layers with covers,

quilt, bedspread, and cushions. Scattering a few rugs on the floor is another great idea. Opt for relaxing colours, such as beige, pale blue, dusty pink, café au lait, and celadon, unless you prefer strong, dark tones for
more intense coziness. Add touches of yellow, burnt orange or warm red as an accent. Printed fabrics contribute to the creation of a cozy atmosphere as well. A good choice is a warm and harmonious mix of pat-
terns that evoke Mother Nature. Last but not least, vary the sources of light. Use a chandelier for overhead lighting, plus floor lamps, table lamps, and carefully placed recessed lighting.
Entertainer’s kitchen come to life As a keen baker and a cook, Annette Carey was never going to let a small kitchen cramp her style.
There was major work to do for a couple coming home to a former rental property in Golflands. But with the help of Jag Kitchens, the true entertainer’s kitchen they envisioned turned out to be a smooth-sailing process.
A teal splashback creates a calm, cool mood complementing the teal accents of seat cushion covers and drapes.
She and husband, Jason Carey, had bought their Golflands property many years ago and had been renting it out before deciding to “downsize” and turn it into a home. “We’ve had a total renovation,” says Annette who acted as project manager for the makeover which saw the house shrink-wrapped for many months.
Best of all, the experience with Jag Kitchens has been as seamless as the kitchen design. “Everything ran very smoothly and Caroline was really patient and understanding,” says Annette.
Caroline Charman, right, with Annette Carey. Times photo Wayne Martin
Naturally, the kitchen was a top priority.
“It’s our hub of family life and even when somebody’s working in the kitchen, we can all happily co-exist in one big space.”
“It was a cream one that came with the original house built in 1998. Everything about the house was looking old and tired and the kitchen was the same.” The kitchen ran onto an adjoining small room at the front of the house which was impractical as well, says Annette. Calling in the experts at Jag Kitchens in Botany’s Danske Mobler Home Centre, Annette met with designer Caroline Charman. “A mutual friend just had her kitchen done and she was full of praise for Caroline so I was sold. Then when I met Caroline, we discovered we had another mutual friend!”
“I do a lot of baking so all that bench space is fabulous,” says Annette. “We had 16 people in here for a dinner party here the other day!”
Caroline says it was a matter of treating the space as a blank canvas. “Everything evolved as we went along and although Annette had gone abroad for a few months we managed to pick up where we left off and work with the architect’s design.” With their children all grown up and having flown the nest, the Careys looked forward to creating a beautiful living space without the mishmash of items collected over the years. And the result is simply
breathtaking. Black granite bench tops sparkle across an infinitely long space, with sleek lines running across, creating a minimalist appearance. White cabinetry above and below run in a linear pattern, further enhancing the
streamlined look with an ample oven ample oven, dish drawers and fridge built in with trim kits. An open scullery stands where the room once was, and the kitchen is now three times the size of the former area, great for entertaining guests and flowing to the dining area.
Jag Kitchens has an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets and for providing an outstanding design service with sound advice. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.
Whether you are thinking of a major renovation or simply planning to replace an existing kitchen do contact Jag Kitchens. All designers have years of experience and are happy to discuss your kitchen project free of cost and obligation.

Ultimate walk-in closet W
Photo supplied
hat fashionista has never dreamed of owning a walk-in closet? A spacious area for storing clothes, shoes and accessories will make even the most meticulous of people happy. Here are seven tips for creating an optimal layout in your walk-in. ■■ Plan separate sections for each category of clothing such as long dresses, business suits, casual wear, underwear, and coats. ■■ Opt for short rather than long horizontal rods, as they are sturdier and will simplify your search for clothing. ■■ Avoid overloading rods, drawers and shelves. If possible, sell or give away any clothing that you haven’t worn for at least a year. ■■ Allow as much natural light as possible into the room, or install enough lighting to be able to distinguish the most subtle colours. Who wants to realize — in the middle of an important meeting — that a navy blue tie is actually black? ■■ Make room for a chair or even an armchair and at least one full-length mirror to check an outfit on the spot — and feel like a movie star in your own home. ■■ Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the room, especially if it is located near a bathroom. This removes the danger of ending up with mouldy clothes. ■■ If you’re a shoe addict, place your collection on a shelf or in open compartments in order to protect them. You’ll also be able to find the perfect pair for your outfit with one quick glance.

Good tools to start the new school year Going back to school is often synonymous with stress, for children as much as for parents. One of the ways to reduce anxiety is to prepare really well to meet the challenge of the big day. Buying clothes and stationery is obviously part of the ritual of going back to school. But there’s a lot more to it than that: ensuring the good health of your child and giving him or her the necessary tools to stay in top shape are also essential. During the summer, your child has had a lot

desk and to carrying a sometimes heavy backpack. So it is important to check the state of his or neck and back or else pain could make it hard for the child to concentrate. Perhaps your child has grown a few centimetres over the past few months. Your child’s body is changing even if it isn’t noticeable. Growth could have resulted in the start of short-sightedness. An eye test by an optometrist would show if he/she needs to wear glasses to be able to see the board at the front of the class. Finally, perhaps good dental hygiene habits have fallen by the wayside over the summer. Ice-cream cones, lollipops and other small treats can damage teeth. A visit to the dentist for a good cleaning and a check-up would put your child back on track!

ast year an inspirational man set a goal to run seven marathons in his 70th year, and now he has achieved it. When the Times spoke to Howickian Garry Donoghue in May last year, he had just completed his first marathon in Rotorua. “At that point everybody thought I was mad and so did I,” he says. After Rotorua, Donoghue went on to run the Christchurch marathon, the first since the 2011 earthquake, and the Sydney marathon which he simply describes with one word - “iconic”. It was the Melbourne marathon in which Donoghue achieved his fastest time of 4 hours 27 minutes. On the morning the All Blacks won the 2015 Rugby World Cup in early November, Donoghue ran the Auckland marathon with cheers of jubilation all throughout the crowd. Only a few weeks later, Donoghue was travelling to Thailand to compete in the booked out Bangkok marathon with his daughter. Beginning at 2am and in 28 degree heat, Donoghue said it was chaos with more than 10,000 people running the

marathon along with 25,000 running the half-marathon as well as tens of thousands doing the 5km and 2km walks. Donoghue’s seventh and final marathon was a much smaller event, an anti-climax in comparison, run by the local Harriers club in Whanganui, but which also marked another feat. “In the end I did four marathons in eight weeks. “A few rule books were broken” he says. However the athlete, who says he has always had the ability to run long distances, is proud of his achievement. “Most people in the running world or fitness world would say I overdid it. “But actually it didn’t feel like that.
“In the end I was saying I was very lucky because I could do it” he admits. Donoghue’s saviour was his wife Helen who helped with his pre-marathon diet and recovery after each run. “She’s a good cook and gets it right,” he says. Donoghue also set this challenge for philanthropic reasons to fundraise for End Polio Now, a global initiative which he is involved in as part of Howick Rotary Club. Donoghue wanted to highlight the deadly disease which caused his father to die from heart failure at a young age and which affected some friends he attended school with. “Because I was a Rotarian I set myself that goal as a part of it. “I will have raised between four to six thousand dollars” Donoghue says. As an added bonus, any donation made to End Polio Now is also matched two for one by the Bill Gates Foundation, taking Donoghue’s total up to almost $15,000. Donoghue hasn’t finished running yet. He says he is still training, running up to 60 kilometres a week in preparation for the Rotorua and Auckland marathons which he hopes to do every year he is able.

World record crowns classy triumph H
ow fitting it was that New Zealand should crown their 10 wicket T20 win against Pakistan at Hamilton on Sunday with a world record 171 partnership from brilliant opening batsmen Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson. While captain Williamson apologised to Guptill for his early run out in the previous 16-run loss at Auckland, Guptill was partly to blame for ball watching. However they made amends by combining beautifully in Hamilton. Whereas the smart Pakistani field placings dramatically reduced Williamson’s run rate in the first game, he still managed a patient 70 and dominated the talented tourists bowlers in the second when piercing their field with beautifully executed strokes. Whereas master blaster Guptill reached his 87 from 58 balls, Williamson was no sluggard either in notching his 71 from 48. The wonderful comeback demonstrated the special character of a New Zealand cricket team that continues to prosper despite the absence of Brendon McCullum who will retire from international cricket after next month’s home test series against Australia. As shown when they dismissed three Black Caps batsmen for a duck at Eden Park, Pakistan have a world class bowling attack with a good combination of pace and spin. Yet Guptill and Williamson made
their bowlers look ordinary second time round. Convincing as this win was in chasing down the tourists 168 for 7, Pakistan could still be dangerous in the Wellington decider should they break the Guptill/Williamson partnership early. Apart from Williamson the only Black Caps batsman to prosper in Auckland was Colin Munro, who followed his blistering 14-ball halfcentury against Sri Lanka with another cracking half-century. An aggressive player in the Jesse Ryder mould, left hander Munro is a sweet timer who relishes scoring off the pace bowlers. Having scored his 50 against Sri Lanka just two balls short of the world record, he has worked hard to overcome his weakness against quality spin which will play a huge role in deciding the outcome of the forthcoming World T20 championship in India. Unfortunately the Black Caps no longer have a spinner of Daniel Vettori’s class though young left arm all-rounder Mitchell Santner shows promise and appears to have overtaken Mark Craig as his country’s premier spinner. Right arm leggier Ish Sodhi is another whose best years appear are ahead of him. But Black Caps newcomer Todd Astle has struggled and has proved expensive so far against Pakistan. In contrast Trent Boult, Tim
Agnew’s Angle
Southee, Doug Bracewell, Mitch McClenaghan, Matt Henry, Adam Milne and Neil Wagner offer plenty of options in the pace department. All-rounders Corey Anderson, Jimmy Neesham and medium pacer Grant Elliott can also be useful but are far better batsmen. With Anderson having recently returned from a long injury spell, selectors Mike Hesson and Gavin Larsen will be hoping he can demonstrate his old batting prowess in the remaining games against Pakistan. Like Guptill and Munro, Anderson is a powerful striker capable of scoring a swag of sixes. Add to that the absolute class of Williamson and Ross Tayler and New Zealand have real batting depth. Hence the future looks bright following an outstanding 2015. However it remains a shame the team lacks proven international spinners capable of taking full advantage of the Indian wickets they can expect at the World ODI Cup. However their batsmen pose a threat to all-comers. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports columnist and author

Cricket club aims to dump burning debt By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER After an arsonist burnt the clubrooms to the ground in 1999, Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club are determined to rid themselves of debt following the rebuild of the new pavilion in 2001. Despite the number of fundraising initiatives over the years, Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club remained in debt after the devastating fire destroyed the entire club’s history including trophies, club photos, honour boards, and memorabilia and left 70 junior teams without equipment. The new $800,000 Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club pavilion was opened by former Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis on November 3 2001. Fundraising and marketing manager Ted Waters says that getting out of debt is now an important goal with the club’s 150th anniversary approaching next year. curtain raisers involving local college rugby, which we will continue this year. And when it allowed, the team also trained at some schools.
“This year we had the opportunity for a home pre-season game which is an ideal chance to give back a little to the community with free entry.”
The Pakuranga United Rugby Club is thrilled to host the game. “It is exciting for the club and especially for the east Auckland community,” said club manager Stephen Hackett. “It’s great to have the opportunity to host the Blues in its roots. It is an opportunity for our members and the fans out here to get in behind the match and for them to meet the Blues.” Hackett said the Pakuranga club has taken significant strides both on and off the field in the last five years and the opportunity to host a game of this magnitude is reward for a community that has really backed rugby. The match will kick off at 5.30pm with further details about
the match and entertainment to follow. The Blues other pre-season games will be away against the Hurricanes at Eketahuna on Saturday February 13 and the Chiefs at Pukekohe on Friday February 19, a week ahead of the season kick-off when they host the 2015 Super Rugby champions, the Highlanders at Eden Park. There are new options for True Blue Members this year. In addition to the eight-game season passes, fans can opt for a FlexiPlan package and pick the games that suit you best.
