BOLD IDEA: Howickian John Caldwell is looking for assistance to help him get his dream of a solar-powered boat onto the water.

J

OHN Caldwell is searching for someone able to assist in making his dream of building New Zealand’s first practical solar-powered catamaran boat come true. “I would like to see it floating by this time next year if possible,” the Howick engineer and inventor told the Times, about the unique project. “If I’m really lucky I’ll find a partner to help me and I’m definitely searching for corporate sponsorship. “It could be someone interested in owning a share in the boat, but I’m also open to it being someone with all sorts of skills. “If they had boatbuilding experience, that would be great.” Any potential business partner would be expected to contribute up to $150,000 to help complete the

enterprising project. Named the Electric Solar-Powered Catamaran, or ESPcat, the vessel will be about 11 metres long. It will sleep six people and carry up to 12 passengers on a day trip. Mr Caldwell says the boat’s cabin top will be covered in solar panels which are connected to a solar charge controller. The controller is in turn linked to a set of lithium batteries weighing up to 450 kilograms. The batteries power twin German electric outboard motors, propelling the boat forward. “If you had tried to do this five years ago it wouldn’t have been possible,” he says. “The technology wasn’t available.” Mr Caldwell works full-time as an electrical engineer for Schneider Electric in Highbrook.

He’s motivated to build a boat that will appeal to as wide a group of people as possible. One of his goals is to remove the noise and inconvenience associated with many modern marine vessels. “I set out to build a boat that was quiet and didn’t smell from diesel fumes,” he says. “Bit by bit, the idea of making it solar-powered grew. “Everyone loves the sea, but they would love it more if it wasn’t so uncomfortable to get out on a boat.” Mr Caldwell says the family coastal cruiser will have enough power for its users to go out on the water for a day without the sun. “It will be sitting at its mooring and you will see on your smartphone when the boat is fully charged up and ready to go,” he says. “Going away on it for several weeks

would also be okay. “It will be good for about four hours of outboard motor use and then you will stop, unless the sun is shining. It also charges while moving if the sun is out.” Mr Caldwell has been pleasantly surprised by the level of interest he’s received since deciding to try to build the boat. “People are always coming up to me asking how it’s going,” he says. “I’d also like to see East Auckland secondary school pupils get involved if possible. I’ve been involved in hundreds of design projects. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this, it’s that it’s not that easy.” People interested in helping Howick engineer and inventor John Caldwell build a solar-powered boat can phone him on 535-8973, or send an email to jc@espcat.co.nz.

I WRITE in respect of the article headlined ‘Service station is going ahead’ (Times, January 8). Within it, an inaccurate comment is made in one paragraph regarding the Pakuranga Bowling Club. This is: ‘Early last year, BP Oil lodged a new consent application to build the station at 322 Pakuranga Road, formerly owned by the Auckland Council, and 330 Pakuranga Road, previously owned by Pakuranga Bowling Club and now BP Oil.’ The Pakuranga Bowling Club (Inc) operates within Lloyd Elsmore Park on land leased from the council. The club has never operated from, or owned land at 330 Pakuranga Road. Accordingly, the above statement attributed to our club is untrue and misleading. As you are no doubt aware, there has been from members of the public substantial misgiving about the installation of the BP Oil Ltd service station and some public debate about the issue. Since the publication of the article, a number of members of the public have made disparaging remarks to members of my club and some family members about the article. They have been very critical about what they believed when they read the article, namely, that my club had sold the land for the service station when it is to be located adjacent to a church and school. Kelvin McMinn, Pakuranga Bowling Club president

NEW USE: The site in Pakuranga Road where BP Oil has consent to build a new service station was being cleared earlier this month. Times photo Wayne Martin

Ownership questioned By Marianne Kelly

C

ONSENT for a service station and groundwork presently under way has resulted in confusion about the original ownership of the land a new BP service station is being built on in Pakuranga. The Pakuranga Bowling Club refutes reports that it ever operated from or owned land at 330 Pakuranga Road, now owned by BP Oil which is developing the land (see letter page 1). The Times reported at the beginning of this month that changes made to an application to build a BP service station next to St Mark’s Catholic School and Church and the adjoining Pakuranga Park retirement vil-

lage swung the independent commissioners’ decision to grant consent. Early last year, BP Oil lodged a new consent application to build the service station at 322 Pakuranga Road, formerly owned by the Auckland Council. It was sold to private investment company Tram Lease Ltd and is subject to a perpetually renewable ground lease held by BP. BP’s consent application also related to the next door property at 330 Pakuranga Road. The Times has referred again to the Auckland Council’s report on the application for resource consent. The report clearly states that the 2675 square metre property at 330 Pakuranga

Road was the former site of the Pakuranga Bowling Club, which has relocated to Sir Lloyd Drive in Pakuranga Heights. ‘A somewhat dilapidated club-house is present in the north-western corner, with an overgrown bowling green occupying much of the remainder of the property,’ it says. ‘The driveway to the former club-house and bowling green is located adjacent to the boundary with 322 Pakuranga Road.’ In his recommendation to the independent commissioners, Scott Cheng, a council senior planner, said in his opinion the activity would not introduce more than minor adverse effects into the receiving environment. He noted that the general built

form of the immediate surroundings was well established comprising mixed residential and non-residential activities. These included Lloyd Elsmore Park, a church and school, a community hall, a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, a Z service station, and a McDonald’s restaurant. “It is appropriate to note that the existing activities at 322 Pakuranga Road [zoned business 1] provide an established commercial setting along Pakuranga Road, he said, “while the site at 330 Pakuranga Road was used by the former Pakuranga Bowling Club. “In this regard, I consider the vista of the neighbourhood is not predominantly residential, but rather mixed in appearance.

New leader on arts scene

By Chris Harrowell

“Everyone is passionately behind the redevelopment and we’re coming into a very exciting phase.”

V

ICKIE Bowers is ready to hit the ground running. The new director of Uxbridge, Howick’s creative centre, has taken over from Tony Morgan, who retired from his position earlier this month after five years in the job. Ms Bowers is a former Howick resident now living in Clevedon. She previously worked as a programme manager with the Auckland Council’s City Transformation Unit. The unit oversees the council’s input into major capital projects. Ms Bowers brings an extensive professional background in tourism, marketing and the arts to her new role. Her overseas work experience includes a position on the iconic Edinburgh Festival Fringe culture and entertainment event in Scotland, and as the manager of the Old Gaol Arts Centre in Oxford, England. From 2004-2010, she worked as a tourism development manager for the former Manukau City Council. “This is a wonderful opportunity and challenge for me to be in charge of Uxbridge’s redevelopment phase,” Ms Bowers told the Times, about her new position. “The centre has gone from strength to strength over the years and about 120,000 people visit our various events annually. “We’ve outgrown our current facility. “This redevelopment project has been on the cards for at least the past 10 years.” The $6.4 million redevelopment of the public arts centre in Uxbridge Road is publicly funded from the council’s long-term plan

through the Howick Local Board. The popular venue hosts numerous public music concerts, cinema screenings, art exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Highlights include the prestigious annual Estuary Artworks art contest and the Xtreme Talent Quest stage performance competition for talented East Auckland teens. It also offers a range of community classes and workshops for children and adults in subjects as diverse as photography, music and dance, and fine arts. “Everyone is passionately behind the redevelopment and we’re coming into a very exciting phase,” says Ms Bowers. “We will keep running our classes and events while at the same time managing this major building project. “We will face challenges, but we’re confident we will make it happen.” Ms Bowers says the centre’s staff will continue serving the local community while ensuring there’s as little disruption as possible during the redevelopment work. “The new additional space we will eventually have here will allow us to do more and it will give us new opportunities,” she says. “We will be able to introduce more professional events and bring in more exciting art exhibitions and public shows.”

NEWS BITES Health targets met FASTER treatment in hospital emergency departments last winter compared with the previous year is commended by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. Counties Manukau District Health Board met and exceeded its target for delivering elective surgery, achieving 111 per cent of its goal and providing an extra 453 elective surgeries during the third quarter last year, he says. More children are also being protected from preventable illnesses, with 94 per cent of eight-month-olds in Counties Manukau being fully immunised, a 2.7 per cent improvement. Counties Manukau emergency department (ED) is performing well, says Mr Ross, with 95 per cent of patients visiting ED being admitted, discharged, or transferred within six hours. The eligible population having their cardiovascular risk assessed in the past five years is 91 per cent, making Counties Manukau the second top performer. “In almost every category, Counties Manukau was in the top five performing DHBs, which is great news for our region,” Mr Ross says. “All our DHBs have made good progress since the National Health Targets were streamlined to improve health services for patients. “Across New Zealand, people are getting more checks for diabetes and heart disease, more help to quit smoking and more operations faster.”

Cats need fostering SPCA Auckland is overflowing with cats and kittens urgently needing temporary homes for three to six weeks. It has 292 cats and kittens at foster with more arriving daily. Some need time to gain weight or recover from cat flu, so the SPCA requires volunteers for more foster homes to care for them until they’re healthy enough to be adopted. The SPCA will take care of their supplies and medical needs, if volunteers can take care of them for a few weeks. If anyone can spare some room and love for a recovering kitten or cat, they’re encouraged to contact the Foster Team: phone 256-2525 or 256-7303, or email fostering@spca.org.nz.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Monday, January 26, 2015 — 5

They’d dance five-hundred miles By Marianne Kelly

A

GE, hereditary background and lack of a partner are no impediment to participation in a dance that goes back to the 18th century. This area has the luxury of two Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) clubs, Howick and Highland Park. Between them they have close to 70 members and there’s plenty of room for more. SCD is an extremely social dance, involving three or more couples. So it follows that the more members they can muster for club nights, the more partners can be coupled up. At least four sets of four people are needed. And because the clubs operate on different nights, full-on enthusiasts can attend one as a member and the other as a visitor, or join up with both. While the challenge is to revitalise the Scottish culture, Heather Mackay, who is on both clubs’ committees and secretary of Howick, says “the most important aspect is the fun you have. “People don’t need partners. Although the clubs have a surplus of women, a lot are adept at the male and female steps. As a pursuit, SCD is no longer confined to Scotland and active clubs operate around the world, including the rest of Britain, Europe, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan. So it’s not surprising the Howick and Highland Park clubs include Chinese and Japanese members. Age, also, is no barrier. “Quite a few members say they want to die on the dance floor, Ms Mackay says. “Some have danced all their lives and still attend club nights. They go until they can no longer do it. Some are in their 80s and still going like a rocket.

HIGHLAND TRADITION: Members of the Howick Scottish Dancing Club, from left, are Beth and Dave Small, Valerie Lofthouse and Murray Wilson; Highland Park Scottish Dancing Club, Shirley Butler, Jim Mackie, Jean Wright and Warren Taylor. Times photo Wayne Martin

Each club benefits from the skills of two teachers with excellent credentials, she says, with three of the four bringing overseas experience. Each teacher places different emphasis on dancing skills resulting in a rounded experience for those who attend both clubs. SCD’s social emphasis results from being able to dance with seven or more people at once instead of one partner. Smiles and eye contact are considered mandatory. In fact one anonymous commentator says there’s a lot of opportunity for relaxed “flirting. Ms Mackay says it’s important to hold the eye of another dancer as you

go past. “In the beginning it may feel like a fake, cheesy smile, but once you get into the dance it becomes more spontaneous. Beginners, she says, need to be mentally sturdy and not afraid to make mistakes. “When we make mistakes, it’s a laugh, but not a mean laugh. If you go wrong, you go wrong. “At the learning stage it’s better to be paired with someone who can haul you back from mistakes. With the current emphasis on mental and physical health, Ms Mackay says SCD caters for both. “We have to step up to the challenge to remember the dances. Say

you’re in a five-couple set, you’ll have been dancing the same thing five times from different places. Even the slower, more stately Strathspey is tiring and physically challenging, she says. Most clubs have an annual ball which others attend and Ms Mackay says when the dance MC announces a dance, it’s important to remember the formation because there’s no chance to walk through the steps. Instead of a ball, however, Howick and Highland Park clubs have annual afternoon tea dances. Experienced members also take part in major events, such as the Howick Lions in the Park and Mili-

tary Tattoo at Lloyd Elsmore Park on February 22, the Auckland Highland Games, and performances at rest homes and garden parties. Both clubs are considering holding tartan nights where the men can don their kilts and the women white skirts and tops setting off colourful tartan sashes. They’ve also discussed the possibility of encouraging young people and children to take up SCD and there is scope for schools to include it in NCEA qualifications, Ms Mackay says. Ms Mackay says she started SCD because of her Scottish heritage. The biggest export from Scotland, she says, was people and “you won’t walk far down the street here and not run into someone of Scots heritage. But, she says, people are also encouraged by word of mouth and people descended from different cultures join up because “they just like doing it. “The sad thing is these cultural things die out and in a couple of decades they could be gone. “It’s important to keep that link with the past. It’s healthy. We’re not just on Earth for a limited time span; others have preceded us. The clubs will hold beginners’ classes at the start of the new season, Howick a six-week course starting on February 3, cost $30; Highland Park, a four-week course starting on February 4, cost $20. Participants should wear soft soled shoes and don’t need a partner. The main season starts at the beginning of March running through the school holidays until mid-November. The supermarket’s owner/manager Brendon Jones says he was apprehensive leading in from the opening, “but the team really rose to the occasion. “People were keen to check us out and it all came together. January, he says, is generally quieter for supermarkets, “which was perfect; it allowed us to buy time, look and make sure we were doing everything to our very best. Most of the positive feedback he attributes to the team of 120 mainly local staff. “Customers take time to write to us, Brendon says, “a fantastic experience. “We’ve had overwhelming positive feedback and the thing that stands out is the team, focused on service which is what we were trying to do well in the

Feedback, he says, is also about the experience and “wow valueâ€? of the store; the big open spaces with an impressive fresh produce department at the entrance. The location, on the corner of Union Road and Wellington Street in Howick Valley, he says is great, being on a couple of major arteries. Regulars and those who have not yet visited the store are in for major promotions starting this week. “We’d like people to know we’re here and come and check us out,â€? Brendon says. “People have their shopping habits. We’re trying to bend over to make it an easier experience so people will then stick with us.â€?

Scott Base turns 58 A

NTARCTICA New Zealand and the Antarctic community last Tuesday celebrated the 58th anniversary of Scott Base, when New Zealand established its permanent residence on the frozen continent. While New Zealand boasts more than 100 years of history connecting Christchurch to Antarctica through the early polar explorers, the proposal for a Kiwi base there was presented to the Government by the NZ Antarctic Society in 1953. The construction of Scott Base began in 1956 to support the Trans-Antarctic Expedition and International Geophysical Year of 1956-1959. A complex of six buildings was designed to be connected by covered walkways with each building no less than 7.6 metres apart. The central A Hut was planned to include the mess, radio room and leader’s office and was considered the most important building of the base. The A Hut was erected in Wellington and public viewing was encouraged for a small fee. Each of the buildings was then systematically dismantled and packed in reverse order to assist in its reconstruction at Scott Base.

Two ships, the HMNZS Endeavour and the United States Navy ship, Private John R. Towle, were used to transport the materials south. On January 10, 1957, a D8 bulldozer from McMurdo Station and a team of Seabees levelled the site where Scott Base now stands. The following day the construction team comprising the eight men who had assembled the buildings in Wellington, set up tents on site. On January 12, the assembling of A Hut began where railway sleepers and a raft of Oregon pine formed the platform on which the building stood. At precisely 1pm on January 20, 1957, Captain Ruegg, then administrator of the Ross Dependency, made a short speech before the New Zealand flag was raised for the very first time in Antarctica by the youngest man aboard the Endeavour, 20-year-old able seaman Ramon Tito. In attendance were explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Captain Kirkwood of the Endeavour, Admiral Dufek, Captain Weiss of the Private John R. Towle, photographers and journalists. “Scott Base has been, and continues to be, a home away from home

for many hundreds of New Zealanders, says Antarctica NZ chief executive Peter Beggs. “That’s why it’s important we celebrate the history of these buildings through which many of us share such fond memories. “Scott Base now has the capacity to accommodate up to 85 people at any one time and over an average summer season will support around 11,500 person-days on base. “Over the past 58 years, our scientists, in collaboration with many other nations, have confirmed Antarctica is changing at an accelerated pace. “As such, by maintaining our presence on ice, and supporting internationally peer-reviewed science, we’ll be able to learn more about what this means for New Zealand and our families. Last week marked the beginning of the $4 million upgrade of the Hillary Field Centre to support New Zealand’s expanding science and environmental programmes. The facilities are being significantly improved through the provision of the new building. The improvements will enable Antarctica NZ to support largerscale field events, ensuring Scott Base remains a world-class Antarctic research facility.

HONORARY ISLANDERS: The Pakuranga Vet Clinic team in Niue, including owner Sasha Nowell, right.

Vets’ life-changing experience on Niue By Daniel Silverton

T

HE team from Pakuranga Vet Clinic is setting up a more permanent relationship with Niue to champion care of the Pacific island’s animals, under the banner of South Pacific Animal Welfare (SPAW). Three vets and two nurses spent a week on Niue late last year to provide free veterinary care to the country’s domestic and wild cats, dogs and pigs. The trip was supported by SPAW, which provided the medicine, vaccines and surgical material. The Pakuranga Vet Clinic members had to fundraise to cover the costs, which included flights, accommodation, freight, insurance and other expenses. “We all donated our time, the team took annual leave to be able to go, says owner Sasha Nowell. “We did 105 de-sexing surgeries and 80 consultations. We didn’t turn anything away. “There were queues of animals lining up to be treated, with up to three surgeries at once. The conditions were a lot different to what they are used to working in. Instead of the high-end technol-

ogy they normally perform procedures with, operations had to be done with just a tube in the animal’s airway while under anaesthetic. “Our steriliser was a pressure cooker heated with a gas bottle, says Mrs Nowell. “A lot of the animals just eat fish and coconuts so they are quite protein deficient. “They bleed a lot because their blood doesn’t clot as well, so the surgeries are more challenging. Despite this, the crew saved a number of animals’ lives, and didn’t lose any. “One dog came in to be spayed and the owner didn’t realise she had a fractured skull and wrist. “A cat from one of the resorts was attacked by dogs and had disappeared for three weeks. They thought she had died. “On the first day we were there she showed up at the resort, so they raced her straight down to the clinic. “We had to amputate its leg, but she’s doing really well. “A police dog was run over by a car and we fixed up his foot. “His owner sent us a really nice note. The expedition has inspired Mrs Nowell and her colleagues to

become the ongoing source of vet care for the island. “What we’ve proposed to SPAW is we’ll work on a five to 10-year plan and take Niue off their hands, but still work under their banner and guidelines. “We’ll go up there once or twice a year, provide the staff, drugs and equipment and work on the fundraising, so there is familiarity and consistency in care. “We’re just so passionate about Niue, we loved it there and it was life-changing. “The police, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, High Commission, Customs, and islanders were all so appreciative and we’re very excited to head back. “We’re going to return in May with the same vets, and the nurses who missed out last time are really keen. Pakuranga Vet Clinic is grateful to those who supported their fundraising efforts, especially Pakuranga College, which donated the proceeds of its mufti day and raised a significant amount of money to help with the cause. “The generosity of the community totally blew us away, says Mrs Nowell.

OME of the greatest lessons children can be taught can be done over a game of beach cricket, according to one of New Zealand’s leading psychologists. Manners, good sportsmanship, the ability to lose gracefully, and the perseverance to keep going when things get tough, are all skills adults can pass onto their kids, not through “parental lectures, but through a simple game of family sport, says Nigel Latta. “When you play games with the kids you’re not just spending time with them, you’re teaching them how to be great people. “Games are just games, they’re not lecturing you, they’re not nagging at you, they are just simply fun. “It’s a great non-threatening way for us to pass on life lessons to our kids. Mr Latta, host of several prime time television shows including The Politically Incorrect Guide to Parenting, says often while playing games we are simultaneously showing our children the right way to behave. This, he says, can be as simple as role modelling good manners, teaching them how to politely stand in a queue, or how to cope with failure. “Some kids aren’t good at losing and as soon as they can see they’re going to lose they start to pack up, and that’s not a good strategy for life or for coping when things aren’t going your way, says Mr Latta. “Most parents, when they see that type of behaviour, start to think about ways they can help their children adjust their approach to things. The TV advertisement for the Hyundai Beach versus Beach Cricket Cup shows a young member of the team taking out his frus-

the blessings of games like beach cricket is that you actually “don’t need any talent! And it’s cheap! A bit of wood and a ball, that’s all you need. “The best stuff you can do with your kids costs nothing. You don’t have to take them to French ski resorts.â€? Mr Latta, who in 2012 was made an OfďŹ cer of the NZ Order of Merit for services to psychology, made the comments in conjunction with the launch of the Hyundai Beach vs Beach Cricket Cup. As part of its sponsorship of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, Hyundai is encouraging families to register a team to win their share of $25,000 as part of its ongoing Family Time Project.

Sales surge ends limited choice year RESIDENTIAL real estate sales growth in December was strong with a much higher level of sales than normally expected for the ďŹ nal month of the year, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) ďŹ gures.

Regional housing market

The Eastern Beaches median dwelling price was up 13 per cent to $825,000 in December compared with $727,000 the same time last year. Numbers of dwellings sold grew 24% to 181 in December compared with 146 in December 2013, while the median number of days it took to sell a house was stable at 30.

Eastern Beaches Dwelling median price 2010 $560,000 2011 $565,000 2012 $620,000 2013 $727,000 2014 $825,000 Percentage change 2013 to 2014 – +13% Dwelling numbers sold 2010 144 2011 167 2012 180 2013 146 2014 181 Percentage change 2013 to 2014 – +24%

QV prices show the biggest residential property sale of 2014 was more than $17 million paid for a ďŹ ve-bedroom house in Bleakhouse Road, Mellons Bay, recorded as having a capital value of $12.3 million. The sale was, however, described by a property analyst as an “anomalyâ€?.

“Inventory levels are at historic lows in Auckland and this is continuing to put pressure on prices and limiting buyer choice.

Helen O’Sullivan, the outgoing REINZ chief executive says the normal December slow down “hasn’t really happened in 2014. Prices increased the most in Manukau and Auckland Central.

Last December was Barfoot & Thompson’s busiest December in the last 10 years with demand never being higher, or choice lower, the company’s managing director Peter Thompson says.

“The key issue for Auckland,â€? Ms O’Sullivan says, “is the lack of listings and continuing solid demand from both ďŹ rst-home buyers and investors.

“At the same time the number of properties on our books at the end of December was 2500, our lowest number for any month end in the past 10 years, he says.

“For us, this represents less than two months’ stock and indicates that in the ďŹ rst quarter of this year, buyer choice will remain severely limited.â€? Jonno Ingerson, CoreLogic director of research says sales volumes in 2014 continued to drop below the numbers sold in 2012 and 2013. “Looking back a little further shows that sales volumes were much higher during the 2003 to 2007 boom,â€? he says. “Volumes then dropped dramatically in

2008 during the GFC (global ďŹ nancial crisis) and have since never recovered to normal levels.â€? A useful way of comparing sales historically is to represent the number of sales as a percentage of the total housing stock at the time, he says. “During 2014 the turnover dropped and reached a low of 0.43% in August and, apart from the GFC period, this was the lowest turnover since at least the early 1980s when our

“Yet economic conditions are positive and consumer conďŹ dence high, so the low number of sales didn’t seem sustainable. Sure enough, in the last few months of 2014, turnover picked up again, but is still historically low.â€? Mr Ingerson’s expectation is that sales turnover will remain buoyant in the ďŹ rst few months of this year. But the lack of listings will continue to constrain the market. “Given strong immigration, continuing low interest rates, a shortage of housing, and good consumer conďŹ dence, values are likely to keep increasing in Auckland throughout the year,â€? he says. The latest monthly data from Realestate.co.nz indicates that the New Zealand property market continues to favour sellers, and increasingly so. â– Colleen Milne will replace Helen O’Sullivan who has resigned as chief executive of REINZ. Ms Milne has spent time at the NZ Realtors Network and before that with the First National real estate company.

Kids sample sports A

SMORGASBORD of sporting activities has been on offer at a new holiday programme that’s keeping kids active during their summer break. TrySportsNZ kicked off this year based at Somerville Intermediate, and has seen youngsters aged ďŹ ve to 13 taking part in more than a dozen different codes from all around the world. The programme was founded by Terry Worthington, who had been disappointed by the quality of some providers that he had enrolled his own children with. “When I’d go to pick them up, they’d be sitting there playing on tablets, so I thought I’d start something,â€? he says. “The programme aims to give kids a variety of sports, enabling them to try different things.â€? The extensive menu of activities includes touch rugby, cycling, netball, tramping, cricket, tennis, and many more.

Soccer instruction is provided by Auckland Football, and the Breakers’ community coach teaches basketball skills. There are also theme days such as Back to the 80s, featuring threelegged and egg-and-spoon races, and Team America, with dodge ball, baseball and other favourite United States pastimes. “I just thought of all the sports that when I was a child I wanted to play,â€? says Mr Worthington. “I’ve always coached soccer and been involved in sports. Having four children I have a good understanding of what kids want.â€? The programme runs until this Friday and will continue throughout the year during school holidays. “A lot of parents have booked their children in for one day and now all of a sudden they’re booked in for four or ďŹ ve days,â€? says Mr Worthington. “We have good qualiďŹ ed teachers on board and it’s going great. We’re getting some awesome feedback.â€?

Camps teach skills and attitude By Daniel Silverton

A

NNUAL training camps put on with the help of Major League Baseball (MLB) are making a noticeable impact on the skill levels of young New Zealand players. The MLB Training with the Pros clinics were held in Christchurch and Auckland last week, including at Lloyd Elsmore Park. In the past, the camps have been headlined by high-profile MLB players, including New York’s Curtis Granderson, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Mark Melancon and All Star hitter Paul Goldschmidt. This year, the sessions featured instruction from some of the growing list of Kiwi players who have professional experience. Among the coaches were New Zealand Diamondblacks Riki Paewai, Boss Moanaroa and Te Wera (Beau) Bishop, who have all been affiliated with MLB teams. The clinics were split into sessions for players aged four to 12 and over 13. The youngsters were put through their paces in defensive drills and batting practise, as well as given advice on the mindset needed to go far in the sport. Taking a prominent role in the coaching was fellow Diamondblack and Howick Pakuranga Hawks product Jamie Wilson. “Baseball is a sport that you need to work hard at every day, and we were trying to ingrain in the kids that you need to work hard to get anywhere, he told the Times. “The kids grew exponentially and they really understand what quality baseball is about now.

Times photos Daniel Silverton

Having been involved in junior coaching for a number of years, Wilson can testify to the effect of the training camps. “With these coaches coming in, we manage to bump up the skill level a lot and over the past two to three years it’s improved the game within Auckland remarkably. He was pleased with the way the players engaged with the coaches and the talent they displayed on the diamond. “I was really impressed with how eager they are to learn and how quickly they pick things up. “New Zealanders are athletes, we know that from the rugby field to the cricket pitch and the same thing applies in baseball. “They get taught something once and they run with it. “It blows my mind seeing how far they have come. Many of those who attended the Lloyd Elsmore Park clinic went on to enrol for the remaining sessions held in West Auckland. “We got some great feedback, says Wilson. “They turned up every morning with a smile on their face and basically had to be dragged away in the afternoon to go home.
