Beach House in hot water DESERTED: The sudden closure of The Beach House has left locals wondering.

iners and a bride-to-be were left in the lurch when a popular waterfront restaurant closed unexpectedly. The Beach House in The Parade, Bucklands Beach has been void of activity for about a month but a faded chalk board advertising Christmas events remains. The once-respected restaurant was a regular sight on online deal sites such as GrabOne and Groupon up until its closure, the most recent three-course meal voucher on Groupon purchased by more than 400 people. A Groupon spokesperson only had this to say: “Customer satisfaction is our number one priority; we have proactively contacted all customers who have
not redeemed their Groupon and issued full refunds.” A Pakuranga bride-to-be who had booked her wedding and put down a deposit of $1000, said she found out early this month that the restaurant was in trouble. “I emailed them to organise details because I was on holiday and a waitress called me and told me everything,” she told the Times. The woman, who declined to be named, said she was told the business had been put into liquidation and the owner had gone overseas leaving suppliers unpaid. She did not think the deposit would be refunded although the waitress had passed on her details to the new owners who purchased The Beach House after the saga. Her wedding will go ahead next

month at the Turanga Creek Winery in Whitford which “saved the day”. The Times made attempts to contact owner Alex Kaihea but his phone appears to be switched off. The restaurateur, who also owned The Esplanade (now Barracuda in Eastern Beach) with his ex-wife, Kelly Miller (formerly Kaihea), initially started at The Beach House in 2000 as a kitchen hand before acquiring it. In late 2012, Kelly became a contestant on hit cooking reality TV series MasterChef NZ which screened in 2013. She was booted out in the finals finishing in third place. In 2014, Kelly split from Alex, The Esplanade was sold, and she launched Diced Workshops, a
‘Never mind the eye, great win for the boys’ The Black Caps batsmen who suffered a blow to the eye by a bouncer in New Zealand’s opening one-day international against Pakistan at the Basin Reserve yesterday was one of Howick Pakuranga’s own former stars. Mitchell McClenaghan made 31 off 18 balls before retiring after being hit in his left eye by Anwar Ali’s ball that lodged between his grill and face. McClenaghan went to hospital during the second innings for further assessment
after the cut was stitched at the ground. A spokesman for New Zealand Cricket said: “There’s a slight fracture above his left eye and he will have some minor cosmetic surgery on Friday in Auckland. He won’t play before that.” Before the hit, McClenaghan’s innings was a highlight which helped push New Zealand to claim the win. Along with Matt Henry, McClenaghan helped rescue New Zealand’s innings with a

Alex has also moved on, fathering a baby boy born last year to new partner, Dani Niuhulu. Calls and texts from the Times to Kelly went unanswered. The person who answered Claudius’ phone said he got the number three weeks ago, and had received strange calls from what he thought was a debt collection agency. A worker from a neighbouring business who had just been working there for a week said her boss had said the restaurant next door was “finished” but did not say why.

All those who thought that inorganic collection has to be paid for now can breathe a sigh of relief. The Auckland Council has come up with what it believes is an improved plan that is funded by rates. There is no extra charge. The difference is that instead of leaving the inorganic waste on the kerb which creates a big mess, you can arrange a pick up from within your property. All you have to do is log onto makethemostofwaste. co.nz, enter your property address and check out the pre-planned collection in that week or month. Or call
301-0101 if you don’t have access to a computer. Residents are required to pre-book the service so that they are effectively giving permission for the inorganic rubbish collectors to enter the property and collect items. “Only one cubic metre of inorganic material is acceptable. Closer to the time, you will get a text or an email saying we will be coming to collect the rubbish,” says Auckland Council’s Waste Solutions manager Ian Stupple. You can book the pick-up, up to two weeks prior to your collection. There will be a flyer in your letterbox (mentioning
the collection week and the last day for booking in the service) three weeks prior to the collection week. The annual collection schedule runs from February to November. “The council is also encouraging people to donate their recycling. There will be more community recycling centres in your area,” he says. “We are working on it now.” The re-usable items will be given to community groups who can then find new homes for people’s pre-loved items while reducing waste to the landfill. It gives the recycled items a second

Local board challenge to storm water pipe By Marianne Kelly
T
he Howick Local Board has thrown out a request to approve installing a storm water pipe on a public reserve to service a neighbouring private residential development. At its last meeting of 2015 it deferred approval to run the pipe through Bucklands Beach Domain and asked council officers to report back on the concerns its members raised. The request came from former Pakuranga Community Board chairman Ross Warren and his wife Shirley, a former Community and Howick Local Board elected member. They have resource consent for a three-lot subdivision at their property in Devon Road, Bucklands Beach and want approval to install a public storm water pipe through the park land from their Devon Road property to connect the site with existing lines in Bucklands Beach Domain. The council report to the board said connection to the existing line in the road reserve was assessed as inappropriate as it impacted on design capacity constraints. Local resident Chris O’Loughlin told the board the council had granted five waivers to the normal restrictions put in place for subdivisions. If it were
not for these waivers being granted, the development size would be significantly smaller to fit within the rules of the district plan. He asked how the appropriate procedure for obtaining non-notified resource consent had been correctly followed when there was now a new request from the developer to have the local board approve a connection to public services through a public reserve. “How has resource consent been granted for a four-lot development when the size of the development doesn’t allow for the use of existing storm water connections? “The development at 32 Devon Road should have had a particularly high standard of procedural correctness applied to it, especially given
the developers [the Warrens] have significant previous involvement on local board matters and parks portfolios.” Mr O’Loughlin asked the board to refuse the request and direct the developers to investigate alternatives that didn’t impact on the reserve, fitted within the district plan and allowed for connection to the existing services. Local board members agreed to defer the Warrens’ request until council officers reported on concerns raised by the board. Member Bob Wichman said he was extremely concerned about the request. “It appears to be fait accompli. But councils have been known to get it wrong and I would prefer not to support the recommendations.”
Member Gary Boles said he often felt, when reports came to portfolio meetings, that the full information was not available. “It seems to me this is muddy and cloudy and I am not confident about making a decision. We’ve knocked things back relating to parks so this was a massive shock when it came up. Why did it not go to the board’s parks portfolio?” Chairman David Collings agreed saying that if the board was being asked for access to storm water infrastructure, why, as a neighbouring property owner, was it not also asked for permission for a retaining wall? Mr and Mrs Warren say it would not be appropriate for them to comment while the matter is being considered by the HLB.
Man warned about behaviour A man who approached several children in Beachlands last week has been apprehended and warned by police. Several reports were received from residents about a man in a car approaching children. He was nabbed on Friday. “Police want to thank the members of the
public who reported the suspicious behaviour of a man approaching children in Beachlands last week,” said detective senior sergeant Kevin Tiernan. “Due to the timely reporting, police were able to quickly locate and identify the man involved.”

While the man’s behaviour was concerning, police were unable to identify any offences committed and the man was warned about his behaviour. “It is a timely reminder to parents to speak to their children about talking to strangers,” he said.

Grandmaster defeats sixteen British Chess Grandmaster Nigel Short took on 16 players simultaneously at the Howick Pakuranga Chess Club last week with an unsurprising 16-0 clean sweep. Short, who is considered Britain’s best player ever, was in New Zealand to take part in the 2016 NZ Chess Open. Apart from being an infamous chess champion, Short is also renowned for his sexist comments about women and their inability to play chess. In a column in the magazine New in Chess last year, Short said the reason men were better at playing chess than women was due to gender differences. “Men and women’s brains are hard-wired very differently, so why should they function in the same way?” he wrote. Although this created a lot of controversy in the media, Short had no trouble beating all of the 20 women he played simultaneously at the Aotea Centre on Wednesday last week. Howick Pakuranga Club Captain Stan Yee said that Short also had no trouble beating all 16 of the players at the club the next day. “For the record we had three females and it made no difference whether we were male or female,” he said.

Education centre momentum builds
Textile store planned
By Marianne Kelly
Plans are underway to raise $3 million for construction of a climate-controlled facility to house the Howick Historical Village’s textile collection and other precious artefacts. Currently the delicate garments are stored in boxes on the second floor of the Puhinui Homestead and 15,000 other items are in cupboards and drawers in buildings around the village. As well as providing more appropriate storage, the facility will allow many of the items to go on public display. Village board chairman Max Heron says the new facility will cover the rear car park and the staff lunch room which is currently covered by a tent. Mayor Len Brown met with the village board at the end of last year and says he wants to see what role, if any, the council could play and how he can co-ordinate and support funding from other interested parties. “The village is funded by the [Howick] Local Board through our budgets and I want to see that lifeline continue,” he says. “I’ve had a long association with the village and I’m keen to see it flourish.” He also wants RFA (Regional Facilities Auckland) to look at ways of getting the War Memorial Museum, MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology) and the Voyager NZ Maritime Museum into discussion with the Howick village to see how they
Further funds have been allocated by the Howick Local Board to continue planning work for an environmental education centre at Mangemangeroa Reserve Howick. At its December monthly meeting the board agreed to allocate $130,020 from its discretional operational budget to progress the project. However, elected members made it clear that ratepayers should not be expected to continue financially supporting the project. They carried a resolution that the board expected the Project Planning Group (PPG) and the Mangemangeroa Environmental Education Facility (MEEF) Trust to continue investigation and negotiations to secure capital funding from outside sources for the project in Somerville Road. Last April the board endorsed the completion of stage one and approved advancing to stage two allocating $132,500 on condition that the Somerville Foundation made a matching financial contribution. While the PPG negotiated with the Somerville Trust to secure funding, the trust withdrew its support for the
project. In July the board agreed to accrue $130,020 to the 2015/2016 financial year. Following the negotiations with the Somerville Trust the PPG recruited Friends of Mangemangeroa (FOM) committee member Rebecca Robinson to work on bolstering community buy-in. She set up the MEEF to work on finding alternative sources of funding. It presented its proposal to the local board last November. The trust plans to work closely with the PPG for stage two, such as detailed design, consenting and operational costs. The idea of an environmental education centre on the reserve was born in 1994 when the former Manukau City Council bought the land from the late Archie Somerville’s estate. When the Auckland Council was formed in 2010, Howick Local Board assumed authority over the reserve and legacy negotiations. The PGC members are local board elected members, John Spiller, Garry Boles, Bob Wichman and David Collings. Ms Robinson leads the MEEF Trust with trustees, Craig Whitford-Joynt, Geoff Foster, Patrick Dobson, Colleen Graying, Linden Jonson and Kit Wong.

can work collaboratively. Currently, through the RFA, ratepayers annually fund the War Memorial Museum, MOTAT and the Maritime Museum. But Howick’s heritage village is dependent on funding from the Howick Local Board’s pool and other grants. The local board has allocated $8000 to the village for foundation repair work currently underway on the Puhinui Homestead in its latest local grants 2015/2016 round. Mr Heron says the village board has raised $13,500 from Foundation North (formerly the ASB Community Trust) to rebuild Thomas Eckford’s Farm Homestead. “Getting money to rebuild facilities is not the main problem because we can go for grants,”
Mr Heron says. “But we have to cover operational costs. We have just spent $32,000 on re-working the shell footpaths and driveway which was partly funded by the local board. “The balance comes from our own funds that we raise,” Mr Heron says. “For example about 400 people came to our Halloween night and we raised $5000.” Mr Brown says: “Sixty thousand people visit the village a year. It’s a big operation.” Howick Historical Village volunteer Judy Wilson has written a book Out of the Box which provides fascinating detail about the garments in the village textile collection and an historical commentary about their origin. It’s on sale at the village in Bell Road, Pakuranga and costs $20.

There’s a lot of work that goes behind the scenes in Howick. Thanks to a group of dedicated retirees, the iconic All Saints Church on the corner of Cook and Selwyn Streets is kept pristine. Dubbed the ‘Tuesday Gang’, the group has been going for more than 30 years carrying out maintenance on the church grounds and cemetery every Tuesday morning. The cemetery is the resting place of historic Howick families, including the Macleans, Nixons and Hattaways, from which street names are taken. Today, the group consists of six
men in their 80s including Bob Hammond who’s been involved for about six years. “The church grounds need looking after and we do what we can do. Then we stop for morning tea and we philosophise about the world in general,” he says. Joanne Rutherford of the church office says everything looks immaculate thanks to the Tuesday Gang. “They come rain, hail or shine. As long as I have MallowPuffs for them they keep coming.”

balancing act: Role models - the old and new school leaders from local colleges. Photo supplied

eing a leader doesn’t mean you have to be a goodygoody! “Just because you are the head girl, people expect you to be Miss Goody Two-Shoes,” says Hannah Bennett, former head girl of Botany Downs Secondary College. “It could also mean you are a push over and do exactly what your teachers expect you to. I thought about being a role model and realised that I’ve been selected as a head girl so that I can represent a mix of students at college. I don’t have to be perfect!” The more experienced and outgoing leaders that the Times covered in the issue dated January 14, held a workshop on facing the challenges of being a school leader, making speeches, project planning, running effective meetings and teamwork at the Botany Downs Secondary College last weekend. It was to groom the new batch of leaders to cope with pressure and debunk common myths. Winnie Chau, head girl Pakuranga College says that though there are plenty of
courses on leadership, there is nothing out there for school leaders. “The idea is to create a support system and help leaders network from different schools. Though you cannot be completely prepared for the role, this gives you an idea about the different leadership styles and what to expect.” This year they included student leaders from Edgewater College and Santa Maria College. Head student Jerry Zhang from Pakuranga College says that balancing the personal with the professional and academics is tough. “Being a leader is very demanding and it takes a while to get the balance right.” For Hannah it meant giving up on something she enjoyed. “When my mother told me that my grades would fall if I took up the leadership role, I was determined to make sure it didn’t happen,” she says. “But I knew I had to give up on socialising with my friends since there is always so much to do.” However, the downside was that Hannah found she had lost connectivity with her
mates while her friends who regularly hung out, got closer to each other. A sense of loneliness hit her once the final exams were over. “I couldn’t remember how to arrange outings and hang out,” she admits. “And yet, being an extrovert, I do enjoy having friends and get energy from being with people.” Hannah called on one of the former school leaders for advice and asked if he felt the same. He suggested she take up new hobbies. “I started reading,” she says sharing her insights with new head students of 2016. Annaliese Wheeler, head girl of Macleans College, had a discussion on different leadership styles and how it impacts habits. There is the amiable, driver, analytical and expressive leader. Ice breakers and team games like building a parachute with a device that cradles an egg and chucking it from level one, had everyone bond. The winning team was the one whose egg survived the fall without cracking up! “The idea is to work on delegation, time management and team spirit,” they said.

Black Caps tail stings Pakistan J
ust when the Black Cap cricketers were in dire straits at 170 for six in Monday’s ODI against Pakistan at the Basin Reserve, Matt Henry and Mitch McClenaghan showed their tail can wag merrily when needs must. With star batsmen Martin Guptill (11) and Kane Williamson (10) among those to fall cheaply to the dangerous Pakistani pace attack, it was left to Henry Nicholls to justify his promotion with a splendidly paced 82 to cement man of the match honours. It was a fine performance by Nicholls whose presence in the side was probably due to the unavailability of the injured Ross Taylor. Having dismissed Tom Latham for 11, left-armer Mohammad Amir also claimed the wickets of Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi for 10 and 5 respectively. Once again, relative international newcomer Mitch Santner confirmed his rating as a genuine all-rounder with his 48 before Henry (48 not out) and McClenaghan (31 retired injured) carried the Black Caps through to a respectable 280 for eight with a storming finish. Sadly McClenaghan is likely to be out of action for some time with a fractured eye socket caused by a ball from a nasty Anwar Ali bouncer which penetrated the grill of his helmet. Consequently he was unable to take any further part in the

TOP KNOCK: Henry Nicholls gave a Photo supplied fine performance.
match, having been replaced by Adam Milne who was unable to bowl because of one of cricket’s stupidest rules. As it turned out it didn’t matter, thanks largely to the deceptive medium pace bowling of Matt Elliott which is not dissimilar to the “autumn leaves” once floated down by Jeremy Coney. Elliott, whose last ball six in the World Cup semi-final destroyed South Africa, once more proved his worth as a man for a crisis in capturing three wickets for 43. With world ODI No 1 bowler Trent Boult taking four for 40, a gutted Pakistan were all out for 210, losing a match they looked to have in the bag by an incredible 70 runs. Still it remains a sobering thought that six of the Black Caps’ top seven batsmen failed to score better than 11 with their combined total a miserable 47. They are, of course, better than that although it is a tad disappointing that, with Taylor unavailable, there is no place for Colin Munro after his
power hitting in the Twenty20 series. On the other hand it demonstrates New Zealand’s depth which is greater now than in any time in its history. Meanwhile, fans of heavyweight boxer Joseph Parker should not be too disappointed it took eight rounds for him to stop American southpaw Jason Bergman in Apia, Samoa, on Saturday night. Southpaws, with their right lead and left banger, are awkward customers for orthodox fighters who are more accustomed to circling left around a fellow orthodox opponent’s left than a southpaw’s right. Furthermore, having won all but one of his previous 16 fights, Bergman was no patsy. At last the heavyweight division is looking interesting with big mouth WBA and WBO champion Tyson Fury eager to trade punches as well as insults with WBC champion Deontay Wilder as soon as he completes his rematch against Wladimir Klitschko. Having won 35 of his 36 bouts by knockout, Wilder should stand a good chance of shutting Fury’s gob before Parker completes his bid for a title shot. Pakuranga resident Garth Binedell will be riding 650 kilometres over seven days on a Jet Ski from Opononi to Leigh in support of Melanoma New Zealand. Binedell, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2015, says he felt prompted to inform as many people as possible about cancer. After two operations, prayers and plenty of rest, Binedell has recovered and is getting behind Melanoma New Zealand in the 2016 Yamaha Melanoma New Zealand Ski-NZ from March 5-12.
Binedell says he chose Melanoma NZ as his charity for two reasons: “I have had treatment for skin cancer in the past and there is no event like this to raise money for prostate cancer.” The newbie to the Jet Ski world also chose this fundraiser for personal reasons. “I am participating in the fundraiser to also test my endurance after my two operations and my willpower to complete the course so it is a personal challenge as well,” he says. Along with 20 other Jet Ski “nutters” and their land
crews, Binedell will ride a jet ski from Opononi in Hokianga Harbour to Leigh via Ahipara, Cape Reinga, North Cape, Parengarenga Harbour, Mangonui, Russell and Tutukaka. Along the way the riders will see amazing sights while raising funds to help Melanoma NZ to prevent avoidable deaths from melanoma and support for New Zealanders affected. Binedell has set up a fundraising page asking for sponsors for this challenge. If you would like to donate visit www.fundraiseonline. co.nz/GarthBinedell/

Is change progress?
When the laws of our courts offend the laws of God, where do we stand? For those of who recognise God’s presence in our lives and His influence in the affairs of State, we have to stand where God wants us to stand even when it means opposing those manmade laws. The Abortion Law blights this country of ours as does the samesex marriage bill. Life in the womb used to be the safest place for new life to be nurtured, but sadly not anymore. A civilised society protects its most vulnerable but what we are doing in NZ is certainly not protection. Where are the rights of the unborn child? We need more children born into caring, balanced families, not less. I’ve yet to meet a fellow Christian who does not extend love the homosexuals both men and women who are born in the image of God. However, their behaviour of indulging in sexual union man with man or woman with woman is in God’s eyes an abomination. Marriage can only be between a man and a woman to rightly serve the reproductive process for our human survival. Otherwise it is solely sexual gratification. Toleration is demanded by the LGBT brigade but they seem hesitant in tolerating God’s view and repenting. Let’s call a spade a spade and keep clear accounts with God personally and as a nation. For He sees it all anyway and is everready to forgive our errors if we admit them. His blessings which are considerable are meant for all to be enjoyed. Our sinful actions however have the ability to block these abundant blessings. Ian George Howick ■■ Editor’s note: This letter is reprinted as there were errors introduced at the sub-editing stage. Apologies to Mr George.

Sealink refuse to accept Gold Card The Sealink Car Ferry service from Half Moon Bay to Waiheke charge $168 return for a car, this does not include a driver. They insist upon charging the full foot passenger return fare of $36.50 for a driver. They state that a driver with a Gold Card must still pay the full fare whatever time of day they travel, this is despite the driver being treated like any other foot passenger. I believe they are breaching New Zealand law. Since they advertise the price for the car separately they have absolutely no right to refuse to accept the Gold Card for a passenger. If they listed the fare for a car and driver combined then that

Howick’s bus heritage to go? Most Howick residents are very upset at the proposal to change the corporate livery of Howick and Eastern buses from the traditional maroon and cream to dark blue. In 1883, John Crawford aged 21 years, with his older brother, started a horse bus service to Auckland using maroon and cream colours which has continued until the present day. Why do all buses in Auckland have to be the same colour? Howick and Eastern Buses are easily identified and are admired and loved by Howick residents.
Should stop them in their tracks. It has worked in the past. Brian Kennett We are proud of our history and the bus history is a major part of our heritage. Please leave the traditional heritage colour schemes. Alan La Roche MBE Howick Historian Shelly Park
Fern on the flag
I read in the newspaper a glowing report on the use of the fern logo on the Black Caps one day cricket uniform and rightly so, but how would it look if we were losing? When you think about it, the white fern on black on the national (no pun intended) flag could double as a nation in mourning. I suspect that is the reason no country anywhere in the world (as far as I know) risks using a sporting emblem on their flag. Gary Hollis Mellons Bay
I am here on holiday from the UK for two months, primarily to attend the wedding of my partner’s daughter here in Auckland, which happened on January 16. There was a professional photographer in attendance but I also took hundreds of photos of the wedding but did not take the precaution of downloading them straight away and then, like an idiot, left my camera on Bucklands Beach right opposite where we are staying for a month (1/31 The Parade) on Tuesday morning January 19. It was low tide when I left the camera there and high tide before we realised! Lots of frantic searching that day and since has turned up nothing. The police have been informed and I have asked at local shops and put a notice up near to where it happened. If anyone finds the camera that they either hand it into the police or contact me? It is not the camera itself I am so worried about (although obviously I would like it back!) so much as the SD card with all the photos on that is irreplaceable. The camera is a compact model Olympus tough TG-850 in black. It is fully waterproof so even if it has been immersed, the camera and, more importantly, the card should be fine. I am happy to offer a reasonable reward for safe return, in truth, more for the card than the camera! We have been coming to NZ for more than 35 years and some 10 years ago I lost a wallet in Napier and was actually at the police station counter reporting this when a man came in to hand it in which was an amazing coincidence! I can only pray that some kind Kiwi will do the same this time as there were many other valuable family photos on that little SD card. Any help or assistance would be most gratefully appreciated. charities including Howick Coastguard and Howick Bowling Club, Whiskerz has also volunteered its services at shaving fundraisers. Add the thriving barber trade, and the Whiskerz crew’s hands are full. “We’ve never been so busy,” says Terry. “We’ve always done well but now male grooming is big business.” And it brings all kinds of people through their doors in search of a good, tailored hairdressing service. “Our oldest client is 101 and the youngest one is 18 months so we cover everyone in between,” says Terry. Of course, part of the Whiskerz “X-factor” is communicated through quirky ads placed in the Times which have been a mainstay since the very beginning. “When you’re starting out in a business you’ve got to advertise. It’s as simple as that,” says Terry. “It’s served us well, way better than all the other forms of advertising actually. We both get bang for our buck I like to think!”

father who worked in radio, Terry arrived in East Auckland in 1972. Attending Pakuranga College, he admits academic affairs weren’t his calling, and opted for an apprenticeship in Pakuranga in the late ‘70s. After hairdressing stints at Highland Park and Whangaparoa – with some surfing thrown in for good measure – Terry joined John Smith at Whiskerz. Eventually, Terry acquired the business, and John, who’s been barbering since 1967, remained on scene. A father of two teenagers, and husband to wife Jocelyn, who helps out with the business and is an author in her own right, Terry’s family life revolves around Howick. “It’s a neat place. I get out on my kayak and go fishing. I love my shellfish and it’s all here,” he says. “I’ve also enjoyed seeing the dynamics of the village change to a restaurant and café hub and the population’s diversified into a multicultural one.” A supporter of numerous

s male grooming continues to rise in popularity, one Howick institution is keeping local boys and men looking dapper as it has done for the past 23 years. Having trimmed, clipped, shaved and snipped its way into the hearts of the public, Whiskerz in Cook Street Plaza has certainly earned a reputation that is seemingly a cut above the rest. Endearingly traditional but also loaded with character, the well-loved barbershop is the product of experience and savvy demonstrated by owner, Terry Horan. In fact, just over a year ago the bespectacled businessman acquired Howick Village Barbershop in the mall near the Howick Information Centre. Terry says he’s had his eye on the location for many years. “I could see the potential in it and when it came up more than a year ago I seized the chance.” And that’s how it’s always been for Terry – opportunity becks at every turn. Tosca hits big screen A
partnership between New Zealand Opera and a Pakuranga film and video production company will bring one of the world’s greatest operas to the big screen, kicking off in Howick. Ronel and Karl Shodt’s company, Shotz Productions, secured the rights to film New Zealand Opera’s production of Puccini’s Tosca last September. Now they are releasing it to 27 cinemas throughout New Zealand, starting at Howick’s Monterey. “NZ Opera was keen to see the production go to centres where people can’t usually see the opera,” Mrs Shodt says. “There is a massive audience in other places, such as Timaru and Gore which have taken three screenings because they can attract people from as far away as Invercargill and Dunedin.” From its beginnings in Howick the Monterey has

It has been produced on a shoe-string budget which included private funds, audio recording sponsorship from Radio NZ, a reduced Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra fee while the cast waived their fees for the New Zealand release. plans to take the movie to Australia and beyond. The sensational story of love, jealousy and nastiness features Irish soprano Orla Boylan as the diva Floria Tosca. New Zealanders Phillip Rhodes and Simon O’Neill, regarded as one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated living tenors, returned from the European stage to play the brutal police chief Scarpia, and the artist Cavaradossi (respectively). In its review of the live performance, the Times described the blood on the diva’s hands, sounds of offstage torture, the crack of the shot that kills the artist and the final demise of the diva, as “breath-taking in the hands of a stunning operatic team”. ■■ The cinema version of Puccini’s opera Tosca screens at 11am February 8, 7pm March 3 and 1pm April 3 at Monterey Cinemas, 4/2 Fencible Drive, Howick.

Sales volumes down W
hile the overall real estate activity trend for the Auckland region is flat, Eastern Beaches median prices continue to rise. But sales volumes are down and the time it took to sell a house in December was up by four days. In the year to December the Eastern Beaches median price was up 9 per cent to $903,000 compared with $825,000 the same time last year, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. However the number of dwellings sold fell 19 per cent to 152 from 181 the same time last year and the median number of days to sell rose from 30 to 34. REINZ chief executive Colleen Milne says adjustments to the new LVR rules continue to be evident in Auckland with sales volumes easing as a result. “Numbers at open homes have fallen, but this may reflect fewer speculators and a consequent increase in genuine buyers,” she says. “There is also anecdotal evidence that buyers headed off on holiday a bit earlier this year. While sales volumes have fallen, prices remain firm across the region.” Jonno Ingerson, CoreLogic’s director of research says any drop in values in Auckland is likely to be shallow and short-lived. Mortgage interest rates are at historic
Auckland, in a relative sense, now in the middle of the pack. “The decline in sales volume in Auckland, while noticeable, is likely transitory as the region gets to grips with the new LVR rule for investors, although the median price continues to firm.” The dominance of Auckland in national auction sales has declined significantly over the past 12 months, from 75 per cent of all auction sales in December 2014 to 51 per cent in December 2015, Ms Milne says. Andrea Rush, QV national spokesperson says massive increases in Auckland home values during the first nine months of 2015, at a rate not seen since the early 1990s, led the Government and the Reserve Bank to announce mid-year that they would introduce measures to curb Auckland investors. “These huge hikes in home
lows, migration at historic highs, and there is a substantial shortage of housing in Auckland. These are substantial factors putting upward pressure on Auckland prices. “While Auckland may take a breather, the surrounding areas are likely to continue to rise, driven both by local demand and by Aucklanders choosing to move to more affordable locations,” he says. “However, the value growth we saw in Hamilton in late 2015 of more than 10 per cent per quarter will not continue, instead settling back to a more moderate rate of value increase. Most of the top half of the North Island will continue to increase likewise.” Regional markets, particularly Northland, Waikato/ Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay and Central Otago Lakes are now setting the pace for the New Zealand real estate market, Ms Milne says, with

values and pending restrictions on investors saw many look to move or invest outside of the Auckland region for more affordable homes or better rental yields during 2015. “This resulted in an increase in activity and demand in previously slow markets in the upper and central North Island, including Hamilton, Tauranga, the Waikato District, Hawke’s Bay, Whangarei and Rotorua.” Jonno Ingerson says Waikato District, which stretches from the southern boundary of Auckland south to Hamilton City, has been a popular part of the country for Aucklanders to move to. “With improved state highways, it is possible for these people to still work in Auckland but to live somewhere much cheaper. “Since 2009 the percentage of movers to Waikato District from Auckland has climbed from 20 per cent to 46 per cent in 2015,” he says.

efore considering moving to a larger home, remember that it is often possible to optimize interior space with a few renovations and simple modifications. A more open living environment can be created by optimizing storage and tearing down a wall or two. Here are a few tips. ■■ Knock down some walls. It is normal to feel a little cramped in a house where all the rooms are enclosed. Having lots of walls creates a barrier visually and in terms of movement. For these reasons, many architects and designers favour open floor plans. If this idea appeals, ask a couple of renovation professionals to inspect your home and identify which walls can be removed without affecting the solidity of the structure. A load-bearing wall can be removed, but it will take more time and money. Check with the local council to find out if a permit is required for this type of renovation before starting any demolition work. ■■ Optimize storage. To help increase available space in a home, go through every room and decide what could be stored more efficiently. Could all those pairs of shoes lying

Selina in again
The Auckland Baseball U13 team, which featured Howick Pakuranga boys Nick Jamieson, Hunter Southey, Tray Wildbore, Jacob Wildbore, Cole Joyce, Ryan Houghton and Will Keil, won the Gold Coast Summer Classic with the fewest runs scored against them. The team played the Gold Coast Pirates, Gold Coast Crushers and Gold Coast Cougars, winning five out of six games to come away champions. Jamieson was named Sportsman of the tournament and Traye Wildbore named Batter of the tournament. The team worked exceptionally hard, training for five months before the competition with coaches Jonathan Southey, Aaron Soper and Mark Irwin. Full team: Zach Dawson, Nick Jamieson (Sportsman of the tournament), Logan Nye, Hunter Southey, Cole Joyce, Traye Wildbore (Batter of the tournament), Jason Greenslade, Caelan Hetaraka, Matt Sinclair, Ryan Houghton, Noah Whiu, Will Keil, Hiroki Yasue (MVP of the tournament), Jacob Wildbore, Caden Meyer, Peter Kenedi.

owick’s own bowls star Selina Goddard is starting 2016 on a bright note after being named in the New Zealand Black Jack squad for the TransTasman and Six Nations events in Christchurch in March. Goddard has been eager to make this team since competing as the lead bowler for the Black Jacks women’s triples and fours at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. “My last capped event for New Zealand was the 2014 Commonwealth Games and since then I’ve consistently had that hunger to wear that cap again,” she says. The 21 year old says, however, that being named in the squad is just the first step. “When you’re named in the NZ squad it is never a ticket or pass into the teams selected for events so you always need to aim for good performances and results especially in the major events.” Goddard was ecstatic when she heard the good news which came after a disappointing result at the Lawn Bowls Nationals in Christchurch at the end of 2015. “In previous years I’ve made the final stages but this year was not the year for that,” she says. These two upcoming events, Goddard says, are also crucial for the World Championships later in the year. “The World Championships is the pinnacle and it is also my goal

to be selected into that team.” “The Trans-Tasman and Six Nations is a great opportunity to play the best I can within the team. “It’s also a great indicator to see how our NZ teams are performing against some of the world’s best countries in the sport,” she says. The Times has covered Goddard’s success through lawn bowls since she started winning secondary school titles at Howick College. At 19 she was the country’s youngest ever national bowls representative and went on to win a triples bronze medal alongside Mandy Boyd and Amy McIlroy. In November 2014, Goddard competed in the under-25 World Junior Bowls Championships on Australia’s Gold Coast where she lived for the last three years. Goddard has since moved back permanently to New Zealand.

Blues back to Bell Park
East locals to race 32nd Ironman
I
t will be a case of back to the future for Blues players Joe Edwards, Matt Duffie, TJ Faiane, Namatahi Waa, and Sam Prattley who begin their Super Rugby season with a free pre-season match against the Melbourne Rebels at Pakuranga United Rugby Club. Club stalwart and Blues loose forward Joe Edwards said the team was looking forward to their first ever match at Pakuranga in February. “When you play in a big stadium and it’s not full it’s hard to get a connection as a player. But I expect the ground will be packed and have a real intimate feel, which is going to be great,” Edwards said. “Clubs like Pakuranga are where it started for all of us.” Edwards played for the club since 2001 and remembers his early days. “I started here with the Under 9s. We weren’t much good but we turned up. I loved half-time oranges best.” The Auckland and Blues loose forward played up to under-13s and then
Beachlands engineer Clint Van der Mescht, 43, will chalk up his 25th marathon in Taupo this year – after he’s completed a big swim and gruelling bike ride. Van der Mescht and five other locals are part of the massive field taking part in the 32nd Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealand in Taupo on Saturday, March 5. IRONMAN New Zealand was the first International Ironman event established by the owners of Ironman Hawaii. Today it is one of 39 global events – each comprising a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run - that qualify participants for the annual IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii. It is New Zealand’s biggest and richest annual international one-day sporting event, with the 2016 event attracting a field of more than 1300 participants from more than 50 countries. The elite professionals will race for prize money of $80,000 as well as important qualifying points while age groupers will vie for titles as well as 65 qualifying spots for the 2016 IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii. Local entrants ■ Clint Van der Mescht, 43, Beachlands, done 24 marathons. ■ Carl Rose, 43, Bucklands Beach, airline pilot. ■ Paul Hill, 49, Howick. ■ Mark Harvey, 48, Howick, mechanic. First. ■ Brett Wallwork, 44, Pakuranga, construction. ■ Quentin Fogarty, 36, Pakuranga, computer programmer, twice at Hawaii

returned after high school, going straight into the Premiers and on to Auckland ITM Cup and the Blues. “The club was fantastic. It’s a great place to play. That’s why I think this game is massive not just for the club but for the whole of east Auckland. “To get this calibre of game as a free game out in the community will have a real positive effect back into grassroots.
“I am sure it will be an eye-opener out here for a lot of people who may not watch much rugby, or may not have rugby as their preferred sport of choice. And it’s an opportunity for the region to get behind an awesome fixture.” There are five current Blues players who have been part of the club including Matt Duffie, who like Edwards played at the club as a youngster, TJ Faiane
and Namatahi Waa who got their starts after high school at Pakuranga, and prop Sam Prattley who came to Pakuranga from the South Island and moved into Auckland and the Blues as a result. ■ The Blues, with the support of the Pakuranga United Rugby Club, will put on a free game at Bell Park on Thursday 4 February starting at 5.30pm.
