t was something he always wanted to talk about but never really had the right words to say it. Mortaza Sahar finally plucked up the courage to say it loud and clear, as he spoke straight from his heart at the Race Unity Speech Awards and Conference.
The Year 12 student won the Auckland Regional Finals of the Race Unity Speech Award as he confidently stood up to racism whilst promoting harmony and unity. “Can racial unity really become a reality?” he boldly asked. “Being a Muslim and belong-

MARKETING MAGNATES: Number Nurses are New Zealand Bookkeepers Association’s most innovative marketers. Photo Jackie Russell
Funky marketing style wins the day T
aking a brave leap into a marketing concept that positions bookkeepers as nurses, mopping the worried brow of business owners has won recognition for a local company. At the New Zealand Bookkeepers Association conference, Number Nurses won the innovative marketing award for its quirky branding that shakes off dull images of administration work. The franchise is owned by chartered accountant, Kirsten Hawke, who re-launched the business in August 2016. “Number Nurses creative
presence, online and in print, is smart, sassy, informative and effective,” says Ms Hawke. The high-profile founder, Gayle Buchanan, died in 2015 and Ms Hawke was determined to continue her friend’s legacy. “The messages are infused with humour that resonated with Gayle and lighten the load for clients.” Fulfilling Gayle’s wish to franchise the brand, there are now two new franchisees on board, with one based in east Auckland. The re-launch campaign was tight and well executed with
brand exposure through an international magazine, Franchise NZ and provincial newspapers, all raising the profile of bookkeeping as an exciting career and business opportunity. Social media presence is extremely active with 6914 likes on Facebook, and the online presence and marketing materials are regularly updated. “Gayle’s larger than life personality and aspirations were a hard act to follow but we are determined to nurture her bigger plans to spread the business model here and overseas,” Ms Hawke says.

1920s New York has always fascinated me. After the horrors of World War I, the lifestyles of the rich and famous seemed so glamorous. So when I heard Howick Little Theatre was bringing it all to me in the form of The Great Gatsby, of course I had to check it out. It begins with the older Nick Carraway (Euan Chrichton) narrating his story in present day before handing over to his younger self (Nick Davies). The story follows Nick as he gets drawn into a world of wealth and indulgence through an association with his mysterious neighbour, Jay Gatsby, before becoming caught up in a story of love, longing and loss. It’s not long before we see the dark side of life in post-war America – domestic violence and controlling relationships are unveiled as revelations of betrayal come to light. Off-the-cuff comments also remind us of the era’s divisive class system – and why some things are best left in the past. That’s not to say it’s entirely a dark play – in fact it’s littered with many moments of comedic relief. But it’s a stark reminder that the glamorous lifestyle was not all it was cracked up to be – and certainly wasn’t for everyone. Ultimately, the story ends in tragedy – where the thrust stage was utilised perfectly in unison with off stage sound effects. By the end, I’d fallen in love with the story of Gatsby all over again. But don’t take my word for it - head on down and see for yourself – you’ll be transported to another era and you’ll love every second of it. The Great Gatsby is on at Howick Little Theatre now and runs until July 29. Get your tickets from www.iticket.co.nz or call 361 1000 for more information.

great sporting events, there was controversy, notably referee Romain Poite changing his mind on a penalty in favour of the All Blacks in the final minute. Enough said. Everyone’s said it. The All Blacks should never have left themselves in such a precarious position anyway.
Fox, the younger, agrees. “The ABs blew a few too many chances in the first half and probably should have put it out of reach before that “decision”,” he told the Times. “The Lions turned up to play though, with some strong defence and they
threw the ball round a bit. Just gotta wait 12 years now.” Watching in test match in Ireland did little to help. “It was tough only having a couple of All Black supporters on tour and being surrounded by Lions supporters the last few weeks.” Go well Ryan!

There’s a new Miss Auckland – and she’s one of our very own. Natasha Unkovich, 23, was crowned the winner at a ceremony held at the Bruce Mason Centre last Saturday after weeks of winner: Natasha Unkovich fundraising has been crowned Miss Auckland 2017. and Photo supplied / campaigning CCS (Colour Code Studio/ Jeff Huang) for votes. Miss Unkovich, who also won the People’s Choice award, said the win was a “total surprise”. “There was definitely nerves...I went in with no expectations and it was just nice to be able to showcase everything we’d been working on.” The Bucklands Beach Intermediate teacher said some of the highlights of the journey were getting involved with the Ronald McDonald House charity and being able to share her journey with her students. Miss Unkovich will now go onto compete in Miss World New Zealand which takes place around the middle of next year – but preparations begin early on in February.

eachlands pro golfer Ryan Fox, who has just earned a start at the British Open, had other things on his mind on Saturday night. Fox, 30, son of Grant Fox – the All Blacks great and ABs selector - on Sunday qualified for the major after a remarkable fourth place in the Irish Open. (See story, page 28, Ivan’s Angle, page 27) It booked him a spot at the Open at Royal Birkdale in Southport, UK, which runs from July 16-23. The weekend’s result moves Fox into 28th place in the European Tour’s Race for Dubai. It guarantees his place on the tour next season - the top 100 players earn their card to play on the Tour. It also bumps him up to 122nd in the world golf rankings. But Saturday evening (NZ time) brought a major distraction – the third and final test, the decider between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions. With one test win apiece, the winner on Saturday’s massive test at Eden Park would have given the victor the spoils, the bragging rights. It finished a draw, 15-15. Stalemate. And as with many

‘I felt shocked’ “At that point I felt extremely shocked and sick to my stomach, that a person who has no idea of who we are could say such a thing. “I don’t tell the story to gain sympathy. I am telling the story because I learnt one powerful lesson, which is, people are not racist to who you are but more so, to what you represent. “Let us acknowledge everyone as human beings first before race or religion.” Making a point about the importance of starting meaningful conversations about race issues, he said: “Telling people they are racists, sex-
ist and xenophobic is going to get us nowhere. Because one of the things we know about social psychology is that when people feel threatened, they don’t listen, they don’t change. “People want to be heard and when that happens it is a lot easier to put themselves in someone’s shoes.” He gives credit to his English teacher Mrs Kantha Krishna for guiding him with his speech, and adds: “The reason I like public speaking is that it gives you a platform to share your ideas and opinions and hopefully to be able to inspire people enough to spark a change. “Also, people shouldn’t

Being born in the last year of World War I and being a young bride throughout World War II appears to have created an incredibly positive and resilient a centenarian. Frances (Frankie) Tuckey was born on June 29, 1917 while Britain and its allies continued to battle during the Northern Hemisphere summer. As a newborn baby in London, Frankie was oblivious to the bombing of her city little more than a week after her birth but 100 years later, she has many great memories to share at her Ambridge Rose Manor home. Frankie grew up with her two sisters and parents in a two-room house with no running water. “We had to go to the floor below us and they had a little corner sink where we could get water,” says Mrs Tuckey. “If I’ve lived this long – we couldn’t have done too badly.” Mrs Tuckey’s parents had German and Dutch heritage and they changed their name from Diesch to Hottages to avoid conflict for the family. The children used one name for school and another for home, which caused a bureaucratic hiccup when Mrs Tuckey was an adult and applied for a passport to come to New Zealand. On October 10, 1937, Frankie married William (Bill) Tuckey and the young couple had a longdistance relationship while Bill
served during WWII. Mr Tuckey was at Dunkirk and Mrs Tuckey was bombed out of her London home. “I worked on munitions and we always had to go down into the shelter, but actually it was quite exciting and we didn’t have to work when that was going on. “In the factory, all the girls’ husbands were away in the army or the navy and we had quite a good time, even though it’s a terrible thing to say.” There were naafi (navy, army, and air force institutes) dances and because the women were working they ate out for dinner enjoying very cheap and great quality meals. On one occasion, Mrs Tuckey was told her husband was missing, which was a worry but he did return home, eventually. “When we were young we never took a lot of notice of what was happening – we just carried on.” The couple’s son, Robin was one of the first baby boomers to be born and the family lived in Brixton. Mrs Tuckey worked as a machinist, sewing pockets onto shirts for a penny per pocket and her husband worked for a moving company. “We didn’t want for anything and quite enjoyed life. “We didn’t have a lot of money but you got on with it, always managed and never complained.” Mrs Tuckey’s sister came to New Zealand, and the Tuckey family followed her when Robin was five years old.

reader lodged a complaint to the Press Council in May following a report by the Times about the discovery of the body of a man in Whitford. She had demanded that we remove the story online. That story had received a an enormous number of hits online and an extraordinary number of comments, many from trolls. We refused to remove the story. Following is the unedited finding of the NZ Press Council in full. Nick Krause Editor ■■ Case No: 2577 ■■ Adjudication by the New Zealand Press Council on the complaint of Ellen Adoko against the Times ■■ Finding: Not upheld Ellen Adoko alleges breaches of our principles of accuracy, fairness and balance, in a report published in Times Online on May 10, 2017. ■■ The Complaint The publication complained of was a short piece noting that a body had been found at Whitford, and the police were at an address “where they say that a “sudden death” has taken place”. It continued that formal identification procedures were underway and the police were not treating the death as suspicious. It also states the death would be referred to the coroner. The article concludes that the police could not con-
firm that it was the body of 55-year old John Prangley, who was missing from his Whitford home since April 13. It was accompanied by a headshot of the late Mr Prangley. The major thrust of the complaint appears to be that, although the body had not been formally identified, the editor used the photo with the article title because he was “pretty certain” that the body found was the late Mr Prangley. Although the complainant does not appear to be related or have any knowledge of the late Mr Prangley and his family, she states the family would be devastated and the article will make things worse for them. ■■ The Response The editor stated that this was not an unusual story, in that a man had gone missing, this had been reported on earlier, and then a body was found. The editor says that this information was relayed to him by a trusted source, and that the body found was almost certainly the late Mr Prangley. The editor notes that the initial Facebook page led to a number of posts which he described as “trolls”. He said the complainant was one of those, although he appears to have no evidence to suggest that that was her motivation. Essentially, his position is
that it was a reasonable link to make and he did not breach any principles of the Press Council in the story. ■■ Decision We do not consider our principles have been breached by this story. It had already been reported on that Mr Prangley had gone missing some considerable time previously and had not been seen since. He had gone missing in the Whitford area. Given that a body was found, it is almost inevitable that a link would be made to the possibility that it may have been Mr Prangley. The story clearly states that this was not confirmed, although we note it was confirmed the next day. We do not find the publication of the photograph along with the story objectionable in any way, in that it simply added a further human interest element to the story. Any privacy breach would be that of the deceased family, but they have not complained. The complaint is not upheld. The Press Council considered this complaint in committee. Chris Darlow took no part in the consideration of the complaint. The complaint was considered by Sir John Hansen, Jo Cribb, Tiumalu Peter Fa’afiu, Mark Stevens and John Roughan.

other: “That can only benefit the patients.” General manager Dale Shepherd says everyone is looking forward to having more space. “We currently have a work station in a cupboard so that someone else can use a doctor’s room on occasions. We want to offer more services to patients and we’re looking at the expected population growth and what requirements there will be, for example we will probably have more young families in the area which would give us a reason to add a midwife.” So far more than 200 steel reinforced timber piles have been driven 12 metres deep into the site “so that the building will stand on a forest of trees”, Mr Simmons says. Pakuranga was once covered in a low lying swamp that was drained and developed to create the landscape seen today. Until the 1950s the area was a sparsely settled farming community but in the following decade it was transformed into a new suburb. Consequently the deep piles have been used to accommodate the high water table. The town centre is shaped like a triangle and the master plan concept is designed to strengthen the corners and edges. Auckland Council, Mr Simmons says, wanted a business to anchor the southern corner of the triangle. It will be highly visible to local traffic bound for the Waipuna Bridge as well as to traffic going north on Ti Rakau Drive. “It will define the beginning of the town centre re-development and the way things will progress in the future.” The building is part of a ground-breaking trend, he says. “It’s designed for modular care and is one of the first ones in the country to go down this track, 100 per cent based on patient modes.” Fit-outs, he says, will give a consistent feel from a patient perspective, with consistent signage making it easy for patients to navigate the services in the building. “Patients will notice the difference,” he says.

he piles are driven and the floor slab is due to be laid this week for a building to house a comprehensive primary medical care complex and provide a corner anchor for the planned Pakuranga Town Centre re-development. Pakuranga Medical Centre staff had barely settled into their premises in William Roberts Road close to 10 years ago when the news came that the building would need to be demolished to make way for the Reeves Road flyover, part of AMETI (the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative). It was only three months after three Pakuranga GP practices had merged and settled into their building. “We initially waited asking ‘is this going to happen’?” director/GP Dr Eileen Sables says. “AMETI was on and then it was off. We never really knew when anything would happen. As it happens we had outgrown the premises anyway.” Four-and-a-half years ago, planning for a new complex started in earnest when the medical centre called in primary care project services and health planning company Medispace. A site owned by Auckland Council and Auckland Transport (AT) on Ti Rakau Drive was purchased. The 2500 square metre double-storey building will be leased by the medical centre and a range of other health care providers. Tenants are expected to start moving in next August. When AMETI is complete, access to the new centre will be from William Roberts Road which is planned to be extended to Ti Rakau Drive. Meantime access will be from Cortina Place at the back of the new building where parking is provided for 57 vehicles. Pedestrian access will be provided from Ti Rakau Drive for people using buses. Roy Simmons, chief executive and project director of the Medispace Planning Team says it was important that the medical centre remained an integral part of the Pakuranga Town Centre.
Currently Pakuranga Medical operates 15 consulting rooms while a pharmacy, physiotherapist and a blood test laboratory share the building. A dentist, radiology practice and a cafe will be added in the new building and other paramedical services are planned. The medical practice rooms will be located on level one affording them considerable light along with privacy. “We are more than doubling the space,” Mr Simmons says. Currently the practice has 13,000 funded patients on its books with 11 GPs. Dr Sables says the team is looking forward to being able to offer more services, for example there are hopes to add nurse-led clinics. One of the doctors, a specialist in travel medicine, will have more space. “And we hope to attract more specialists, for example we hope to have an obstetrician. “Everything in this concept is patient driven. People want to access lots of services in one stop. And we’d like to think our bespoke cafe will become a destination option,” she says. “However we plan to stay a family general practice. There will be no overnight emergency services.” The building has been designed to take into account future population growth in the area, Mr Simmons says. “The design has been driven by the patient journey. It’s a model of care-driven design which is becoming the way forward for medical practices. “It means patients will walk in the door to their doctors and have easy access to the other medical services. For example, he says, because some people hate needles they may be tempted to avoid a drive to the blood test laboratory. “If we have everything under one roof, we can drive better patient outcomes. We are passionate about this. “We are putting all the professionals in the one place to keep people well.” Dr Sables says the range of professional services working alongside each other means everyone learns from each

auline Abbott is reflecting on the changing times she has witnessed in the south-east real estate market.over the past half a century. On Monday this week she celebrated 50 years working with P&H (Pakuranga & Howick) Realty. She started work in Pakuranga the day decimal currency was introduced to Kiwis. “I was living in Ellerslie and was working with another real estate company. I thought it would be nice to get a job out this way,” she says. Just three people worked in the Pakuranga office in those days where she was receptionist – in the iconic hyperbolic paraboloid building established by former Manukau City mayor, the late Sir
Lloyd Elsmore, at the fledgling Pakuranga Town Centre. It was the start of development of suburban Pakuranga. Until then only sections were being sold and some building contracts had been let to companies such as Dempsey Morton and Neil Homes. After six months, Mrs Abbott says, “we sold our first secondhand house and things went from there”. In 1992 she became a sales person and for 26 years sold property from the Pakuranga office. “Those were the days when you could pick up a section for $10,800 right on the water,” she says. “We saw huge growth in that period – it was a changing era.” During this time Mrs Abbott also assisted the company’s prin-

cipal Ron Johnson to establish a small rental department. “The rentals flowed into sales – it was an exciting time for all of us,” she says. “Ron helped me a great deal. His thing was making sure everyone was happy and it flowed through the company.” Mrs Abbott worked through the multiple listing bureau system when listings were delivered by courier every day. When computers came in, everything became website-driven and ways of doing business changed. “I wouldn’t say the market is any better,” she says. “The newer people still have to learn to go back to basics. “I never had a desire to move on – I always felt very comfortable here.” Mrs Abbott has worked at the
New mountain bike trails in Whitford
APARTMENTS SELLING NOW!
The New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded the Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club $ 2000 to hire professional trail builders to construct three new mountain bike trails in the Maraetai block of the Whitford Forest. The bike club is excited about building mountain bike trails in the area which is currently being logged. A professional trail-building company will build a two to three kilometre intermediate mountain bike track. The Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club was formed in January 2010 by a group of local mountain bikers who were keen to develop decent mountain bike tracks in East Auckland and gain legal access to ride in the Whitford forest, which is on private land. The forest consists of two main blocks, the Maraetai block and the Whitford block. The latter is currently closed. Callum Wilson, president of the Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club, is very pleased with NZCT’s grant. “Our experience is that people won’t ride their mountain bikes if there are no good trails available,” he said. “Especially around east Auckland, the current offer of quality mountain bike tracks is limited. Thanks to NZCT we can use this unique opportunity in the Maraetai block of the Whitford forest and contract a professional trail building company to change that. “They will start as soon as possible and hopefully the trail is ready to be ridden by the people of Auckland by summer.”

Bethany Lane Noa is a seasoned pro when it comes to hairdressing and when it comes to winning hairdesign awards as well. This year will be the third time Bethany has made it into the finals for the New Zealand Colorzoom Global Creative Artist. Last year, she was the overall winner for New Zealand and went on to represent the country at the global grand finals which were in Sweden. She says that was an absolutely awesome experience and she hopes to do as well again this year but remains humble about her achievements. “I’m nervous and I’m excited if I manage to get through to the Global Goldwell competition finals again but it would also be great if someone else from Schnips PHd was to get through,” said Bethany. “It was a bit of a shock for me, achieving a national finalist place again this year, it’s always an honour and a privilege to be nominated. I really love the Goldwell colours we’re using in our Salons, and I definitely think they’re the best colours for all of our clients.” Bethany, Nina and Keila’s competition photos have been sent to Germany for judging, and a finalist from each country will be chosen to go on to compete in Barcelona at the Global Finals later this year. Bethany is always wanting to hone her creative skills and entering these photographic competitions allows her to do that. “It’s also really about trying to inspire my clients; many who have been with me for twenty years now.” She credits the amazing support from the owners of Schnips PHd – (Paul, Natalee and Clive) for her success and she believes that working at the Manukau salon she is immersed in an environment where she’s constantly growing and refining her craft, and learning from those around her. “Lynette John, Huia Smith and Leonie Nicholls really inspired my journey to excellence at Schnips PHd. We have a good vibe in the salon, our hairdressers are always pushing forward in to order evolve.” The theme/inspiration for the Colorzoom competition was called In-Flux, this involved dark, elegant colours coalesce with mysterious iridescence, creating a new interplay of colours in the hair.
Keila-Marie Robinson remembers going to hair salons with her mum as a child, and being fascinated by the hairdressing magazines there. Fast forward a few years and Keila’s hairdressing dreams have come true, the Schnips PHd colour technician is now a New Zealand finalist for the 2017 Goldwell Global New Talent. It was a surprise for Keila to achieve this result because it was her very first photographic hairdressing competition. She modelled last year for Bethany Lane Noa, which inspired her to enter the competition with a model of her own this year. She had the only male model in the competition photo shoot, and remembers feeling a little intimidated by the strong competition that she was up against. “I was quite nervous, it felt like the other competing stylists knew what they were doing, I just stood there with my tail between my legs,” said Keila, “though I suppose, in the end I kind of ‘nailed it’ This hard-working colourist certainly made her salon and family proud with her interpretation of In-Flux and with her national finalist award. “I have wanted to be a hairdresser since I was a little girl, my family wanted me to do teaching and stuff like that but I think I’ve shown them that I really love this profession and I’ve achieved many things along the way.” This South Auckland local never thought someone from her background would achieve this level of success but Keila says “I have learnt that with a lot of hard work, support and determination we can all do whatever we want to aim for.” Keila plans on staying with Schnips PHd for the rest of her career and is totally confident she’ll build a happy and loyal clientele there. “I believe we have the best quality stylists working here, all with a very high level of skill and experience.” If she wins the New Zealand final, she will travel to Barcelona, Spain to compete in the international finals event. “Knowing you would be going up against the rest of the world, representing New Zealand, must be the best experience ever.”
It was the stunning blues, purples and turquoise with flashes of pink glistening on a paua shell sitting on her kitchen bench that caught her eye and imagination and gave Nina Williams inspiration for her dramatic creation – which she entered into this year’s Colorzoom Photographic competition. Nina who participated in the Global New Talent category, for young stylists, (with less than five years experience) said she couldn’t believe it when she heard that she was a national finalist. Though Nina personally veers towards a more feminine look, for this event she opted for a dark, mysterious iridescence, creating a clever interplay of colours within the overall style. “I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that I was a New Zealand finalist,” said Nina who in the past had also been a L’Oreal Colour Trophy finalist. “The final NZ winner gets to go to Barcelona and I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” she said excitedly, talking about the results that will be announced on August 14. “At the international contest everyone has to recreate the photographic entry on a model, live on stage, so I guess I would be in a totally different zone if I got to compete over there,” said the friendly and vivacious hairstylist. Nina can’t wait to compete with the best on the world stage at this huge hair dressing competition, and says she could not have got this far, a NZ finalist without the support of Schnips PHd. “The team I work with here in Botany are all so supportive and are just amazing to work with. It is such a good atmosphere to work in. “I started at Schnips PHd less than a year ago and since then I’ve had so many opportunities which have allowed me to grow and progress faster than in any other salon I’ve worked at. I’ve quickly become a busy stylist and every week my clientele keeps on growing.”

Starbucks shuts doors for last time T
he store shut its doors for the final time yesterday. A sign in the window read: “All good things must come to an end...and so it is for our Botany Town Centre store. “We would like to thank all of our customers for their loyalty and for being part of the journey with us. We hope you will enjoy the Starbucks Experience in our other Auckland stores, the closest located at Sylvia Park.” The owners Restaurant Brands New Zealand (RBD) - a NZ stock exchange listed company - has not responded to requests for comment. RBD specialises in managing multi-site branded food retail chains, the NZX says.As at February 2011, NZX says, RBD has 208 stores: 89 KFC, 82 Pizza Hut and 37 Starbucks stores.
The most recent financial results suggest the Starbucks figure is 23 which takes into account the closure of the Botany store. RBD employs more than 4500 staff and every day serves more than 60,000 customers throughout New Zealand. In the financial year to February 27, 2017 New Zealand operations delivered their “best ever” overall sales and profit performance, strong trading from the KFC Australian business under its new Restaurant Brands’ ownership and the successful completion of the acquisition of the Taco Bell and Pizza Hut franchise in Hawaii. RBD’s net profit after tax for the year to February 27 was $26 million, up 7.8 per cent on last year’s profit of $24.1m. RBD said of Starbucks’ results for the financial year: “As the

Last Thursday, east Auckland experienced clouds, rain, hail, thunder and lightning and…snow? One Mellons Bay resident was shocked to discover a load of what looked like snow outside his house on Charles Dickens Drive on Thursday evening. Ray Mason arrived home from the America’s Cup Parade shortly before 7pm to see the ‘snow’ in the gutter outside his house and on the porch. “Snow was the last thing I thought it was,” he said, “but it definitely wasn’t hail.” “It was just bizarre…I’ve lived in the area for 30 odd years and I’ve never seen anything like it.” However WeatherWatch head weather Camo Pant analyst Phillip Duncan said there was reports of heavy hail in Howick, and this RABwas more than likely the case. Duncan said it was “way, way, way too Downpour Jacket warm” for snow in Christchurch, let alone • Lightweight Auckland where the temperature was packaway jacket sitting around 14-17degC. • Adjustable He said for comparison, when it did hood & cuffs technically snow in Auckland in August • Zippered 2011, the air temperature was about 4degC pockets with rain. • Black or Navy Duncan said on occasion hail can look • Sizes S-2XL like snow, citing a recent hail shower in the South Island that looked like snow. “It’s quite common for people to think it’s snow.” He said the Auckland snow flurry in 2011 was caused by an Antarctic southerly, while yesterday’s hail was caused by a subtropical nor’wester.

ald Trump to turn America around as it balances on the brink of collapse. They have sought to destroy him by baseless allegations of his collusion with Russia over the presidential elections, simply repeating the same lies until everyone should understand that it is so. This has been proven to be baseless and has resulted in the sacking of several CNN staff. Will there be headline news of this? I doubt it. It is democracy which is the real casualty. The truth is lost. America is down the drain without Trump. If America goes down, we go down. Like them or love them, America has been the protector of the free world. The saying is true. If America sneezes the world catches a cold. Harvey Rosieur Howick
Every night we are greeted by the faces of our favourite, familiar, news presenters on television, lying to us, regurgitating stories so carefully crafted and contrived for world consumption. So much of the international news is ‘fake news’. They know it and we know it, but do we really? Why do we allow it? Why do they? Our opinions and attitudes are shaped by the content of the news they present. Really? That slop? ‘Freedom of the press’ is a high-sounding expression but it has become meaningless. We are being guided by the news which is so carefully shaped and controlled by the ambitions of the shadowy ‘establishment’ which is invading our lives increasingly. For example, we are taught to laugh at the efforts of Don-

The rising mountains have everything to do with the cooling of the planet. There is ample evidence that the Himalayas and our Southern Alps are on the rise but the supreme example must be the Scandanavian continent and in particular Norway. When the weight of the melting ice from the Arctic ice shelf is added to the floor of the Arctic ocean which is made of heavier rock the downward pressure is forcing the Scandanavian continent which is made of lighter rock to rise from the ocean. Consequently its mountain peaks are thrust into the colder stratosphere snowfall increases on their tops and the glaciers begin to grow quite rapidly as they are doing in Norway at the present time. As the glacial ice is fed into the oceans, the seas become colder and the polar regions begin to grow and the planet begins to cool. Information can be found on Google and on the same page it is estimated that 90 per cent of earth’s glaciers are now in a state of growth and so the 20.000 year little (mini) ice age is poised at the turning point. The point I am trying to make is that the power of nature to right itself when measured in thousands of years makes politicians’ present efforts barely significant. Gary Hollis Mellons Bay

Mr Ross agreed to participate in the Silent Leadership Challenge to gain a new understanding of how the hearingimpaired cope on a daily basis. The idea behind the Silent Leadership Challenge is to make people more aware of how difficult it is for those living with the invisible disability. The Times in partnership with the National Foundation for the Deaf decided to tackle three communication challenges to help address noise induced hearing loss and better understand work colleagues wearing hearing aids. As part of the experiment Mr Ross wore bright yellow hearing protectors to stimulate deafness.
“My voice resounds in the headphones and I find it difficult to catch what you are saying sometimes. I can understand how difficult it must be at a more crowded place when people are talking simultaneously,” he said. According to the Listen Hear! New Zealand report released this year there are 880,350 people living with hearing loss in New Zealand. On Friday, August 4 there will be a nationwide movement of corporate and community leaders making a difference for the one in six new Zealanders who have hearing loss. The Silent Leadership Challenge offers a fun and collaborative individual/ team event with an important social message.
Lisa Talbot, project coordinator for the Silent Leadership Challenge says: “In a lead up to the event you can ask your friends, family and professional contacts to donate to a supporter web page and help you reach a fundraising target.” To end the silence on hearing loss, this year the National Foundation for the Deaf is asking for more people to front up and register for the worthy cause at www.silentleadershipchallenge.com ■ The 10-minute fundraising event challenges to be undertaken on Friday, August 4 are a one-to-one meeting, a team meeting, a social get-together at a cafe and watching TV with the family.
July 1 initiatives deliver for Kiwis On the July 1, a number of initiatives came into effect which will benefit the Botany community. These are initiatives that deliver for New Zealanders in many ways, from cheaper registration fees for motorists, more immunisation for our kids, right through to extra police starting at Police College. The $2 billion-a-year pay equity settlement benefits some of our health sector’s lowest paid workers who will receive pay rises of between 15 and 50 per cent over the next five years. On July 1 around 20,000 of this predominately female workforce, who were on the minimum wage of $15.75 an hour, moved to at least $19 an hour.
For a fulltime worker, this means they’re now taking home around an extra $100 a week, which is over $5000 a year. In the wider Howick area, this means many workers in places like the Howick
Housing product Shadowclad spurs major legal action Howick Ward residents with houses built within the past 15 years clad with exterior Shadowclad plywood panels are being advised to register their interest for a proposed class action. Law firm Adina Thorn is calling for registrations from property owners whether or not there have been problems or issues with their buildings. The Ministry of Education brought a legal proceeding against the product manufacturer Carter Holt Harvey alleging that Shadowclad used in some school buildings was defective. However the law firm believes the issue may extend beyond school buildings to homes and commercial buildings that contain the product. If there is sufficient interest from owners with
viable claims, the law firm will seek compensation from the manufacturer through a class action which it expects to be fully funded. This means there is no cost for registering or at any stage of the action. The class action will proceed if there is sufficient interest from owners with viable claims. Find out more about Shadowclad, the class action and to register at www.adinathorn.co.nz.
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany Baptist Home and Hospital, Summerset by the Park and Bruce McLaren Retirement Village will be eligible for a pay increase and the recognition deserved for their hard work. In health we also see new funding for the drug-buyer Pharmac means wider access to new medicines that will benefit more than 33,000 people. The latest drugs to be funded include a new insomnia medicine for children or teenagers who suffer from neurodevelopmental disorders. There are also new treatments for people with hepatitis B, hepatitis C and lung disease. The Government also introduced free chickenpox vaccinations for 15 month olds, as well as for any child turning 11 who still hasn’t had the vaccine. This month, the first of the extra 880 frontline Police will start Police College, with the first graduates on the beat by October. Botany is to benefit from this initiative, with Counties Manukau to receive 91 extra Police officers. This follows the announcement of the Government’s $503 million Safer Communities package earlier this year. For eligible employees and self-employed parents, the maximum weekly rate of Paid Parental Leave will increase to $538 gross a week, reflecting a 2.1 per cent rise in average weekly earnings over the past year. These changes show how a growing and diversified economy is delivering real benefits to hard working New Zealanders and their families. With these changes, Botany will continue to be a safer and greater place to live in. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

YES! The regional winners of Dragons’ Den By FARIDA MASTER
‘P
henomenal’ is how team Festivilia from Ormiston Senior College describes winning the Auckland Regional Dragons’ Den showdown— a key event in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES). More than 300 secondary schools took part in the Dragons’ Den contest at Auckland University of Technology last week. The YES programme pushes the next generation of business leaders to go beyond the classroom and develop business skills by setting up a real business, marketing it and pitching for investment to the judges. The team behind Festivilia worked on a glossy children’s book titled a Year of Festivals. “There is no time to celebrate or rest after the win,” the team says. Having sold 180 books to 10 local schools, clocking up more than 30,000 hits on Facebook and participated in the family expo Kids Fair and the Scholastic Book Fair, the team now wants to ensure that every school, bookshops, library and online retailer has copies of the book.
WINNING TEAM: Ormiston Senior College students Krishin Rama, Rylee Fraser, Vaneel Ram, Preyashi Deo and Kaden Naidoo leap with joy on winning the top spot at the Regional Dragons’ Den Finals. Times photo Wayne Martin
Illustrated by students Paula Alontave and Angela Wong, the book traces Bloop’s exciting adventure on earth as he learns about the diverse cultures that New Zealand celebrates. The team took the initiative of asking Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy to write the foreword. “She was very pleased to know the book celebrates diversity and has even asked us to get involved in the antibuying campaign she is work-
ing on.” The team of five - Vaneel Ram, Preyashi Deo, Kaden Naidoo, Krishin Rama and Rylee Fraser- meet up every day after school to decide on how to sell, upscale and expand the business. Group CEO Vaneel says: “Being a student and keeping up with your studies whilst trying to run a business can be stressful. “Every day I wake up thinking how we can better our business.”
Rylee Fraser, communications director of Festivilia, says that they want Bloop, the central character of the book “to be a Kiwiana icon”. They are also going to work on Bloop merchandise. The team is now working on the annual review company of the Year report that they have to submit in September. This is the third time in a row that Ormiston College has won the Dragons’ Den. Pakuranga College team ScrapCycle took second place at the Auckland Regional Dragons’ Den finals-. Missing the first spot by just half a point. Chief Executive Officer of the business Rishad Manecksha says: “It was extremely close, and the entire competition itself was very tough; all teams were at an incredibly high standard – East Auckland is the most competitive YES region. “Although winning is great, I was in it for the experience, and the many things there are to learn in a competition like this,” says the 17-year-old entrepreneur. “From here we carry on to take ScrapCycle forward – regardless of how close we were, it just means we have to work a bit harder.”

Baldwin tops Elite Motorsport points N
ineteen-year-old Howick race driver Jordan Baldwin has topped the points-table following the intensive week-long camp in Dunedin which commences the New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy programme for 2017. Baldwin is one of eight young motorsport competitors selected to participate in the year-long training and coaching programme designed to provide the competitors with an array of skills and knowledge to help them progress more quickly in their motorsport career. Managed by the MotorSport New Zealand Scholarship Trust, the Elite Motorsport Academy is run by world-class tutors from Otago Academy of Sport and the University of Otago’s School of Physical Education’s Human Performance Centre. Baldwin, who has raced mini-stocks and karts with considerable success and is currently a regular top-three place-getter in the hugelypopular and competitive BMW Race Series, says his motivation in seeking to be selected for the Elite Motorsport Academy programme stemmed from seeing the accelerated development of earlier acad-
emy participants. “A lot of them have come out [of the academy programme] and been extremely successful,” says Baldwin. “It’s what you learn about what to do outside of the car at the Elite Academy – that’s a huge part of being as good as we can be inside the car. It’s crucial to what happens on race day.” The academy camp sees participants learn a wide array of skills and techniques to aid their mental and physical fitness as a motorsport competitor, as well as the sponsorship and marketing, nutrition and media skills needed to succeed in the sport. “Coming to grips with all those aspects of being a top competitor, all those steps to make sure we’re the best we can be, that learning has been fantastic,” says Baldwin. “It’s been one of the best weeks of my life. What you’ll learn is far more than you can ever learn somewhere else. The academy is run so professionally. Everyone involved does an amazing job.” The academy programme also provides a 12-month follow-up package tailored for each participant to ensure they retain and further develop the training regimes and educa-
tional opportunities demonstrated during the camp. “I have a lot of ground to cover over the next 12 months; I want to develop as much as I can,” says Baldwin who aims to compete in the one-make, ultra-competitive Toyota 86 Championship. “I’m looking forward to working with the providers assigned to assist me with the year-long programme ahead – they’re all world-class. I want to put everything I can into making sure I’m the best, to see how much I can develop in the next 12 months and into the future.” The top three for the 2017 NZ Elite Motorsport Academy camp points total included 19-year-old race driver Arran Crighton, from Auckland, in second place and 25-year-old rally driver Jack Williamson, from Hamilton, in third. New Zealand’s Elite Motorsport Academy first ran in 2004 with race drivers Nelson Hartley, Christina Orr, Chris Pither and Tim Edgell among the selected participants that year. Since then, many academy graduates have forged successful international careers such as Shane van Gisbergen, Brendon Hartley, Hayden Paddon, Earl Bamber and Mitch Evans.

More funding for Beachlands School Beachlands School has funding to build 10 new classrooms to accommodate roll growth. This investment is part of a $21 million package to be invested in 41 classrooms at eight schools in Auckland. National MP for Hunua, Andrew Bayly, is pleased with the announcement. “This is a fantastic investment in the education of Beachlands children,” Mr Bayly said. “This will make sure our young people can learn in a comfortable and modern environment. “Our community is growing strongly and it’s important schools are able to provide places for local children. “A total of 4000 new student places are being delivered through Budget 2017 for the Auckland region and this announcement will contribute to this. “Combined with 17,000 places already announced, we’re on-track to deliver a total of 21,000 new student places for Auckland by 2021.”
Maori Party announces first Asian candidate W
etex Kang of Malay and Chinese descent has been selected as the Maori Party candidate for the Botany electorate in this year’s general election. “Our party believes in a fair, diverse and inclusive Aotearoa so we’re really excited about welcoming our first ever Asian candidate into our whare,” said Maori Party president Tukoroirangi Morgan. “Wetex comes from a land and people who we as Maori share whakapapa with, so that in itself is something for us to celebrate. “He’s also a highly intelligent and innovative young
man passionate about the challenges and aspirations of not only our Asian whanaunga in this country but also tangata whenua.” Kang holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy (with Honours) from the University of Otago and received his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Guidance Studies) and Graduate Diploma in Science (Psychology) from Massey University. “I’m excited to be the Maori Party’s first ever Asian candidate. This candidacy symbolises a historical moment where the tangata whenua of Aotearoa can formally express manaakitanga,

He currently runs a beekeeping and queen-breeding company with a community education focus. Meanwhile Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross said democracy is such that the people should put their hands up to stand for elections. “I am aware that 40 per cent of the population is Asian in this area,” he told the Times. “As a New Zealander of Maori descent, I have worked very hard to reach out to the Asian community and share a very good relationship with them. I even have an Asian staff member who assists me with the language if needed. “However, just because Botany has a large Asian population doesn’t mean there needs to be an Asian candidate. The interesting thing is the Maori party has diversified so much. They now have Pacific people too.”

otany Downs Secondary College has taken out first place in the Stage Challenge RAW Division with their performance Endangered species. The Stage Challenge is New Zealand’s largest and longestrunning youth performing arts event. Macleans College took third place. Botany Downs Secondary College’s performance at the ASB Theatre at Aotea Centre last week focused on the “devastating reasons that many animals are endangered”. The main issues covered in their piece included pollution, the ever-growing human population and the destruction of their natural habitats. “Botany Downs Secondary College really wowed the crowd with their moving piece on extinction,” said event manager Olivia Kinane. “Watching the narrative unfold was truly mesmerising. They truly did themselves proud.” Performance judge, Jazz Heaven said: “I can tell there has been an incredible amount of work and consideration put into the costuming, hair, make-up and props – this performance was a visual treat for me.” In a close second place was Westlake Girls High School with Materialism, a story focused around a teen fighting the decision between becoming a doctor or choosing her passion of dance. Miss Kinane said: “The RAW Division

Big drop in house price expectations P
roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church says the latest Institute poll confirms recent figures from REINZ and Barfoot and Thompson and shows that there has been a big drop in the number of people expecting house prices to rise in the next six months. According to the regular poll, which is commissioned by the Institute, the number of people expecting house prices to rise in the next six months is down to 43 per cent, the lowest level since the poll started in November last year. Mr Church says a definite trend appears to be developing, with more people becoming less bullish about house prices. “Our June poll shows that the number of people expecting house prices to increase in the next six months has dropped 12 per cent since our last poll in April and now sits at 40 per cent,” he said. “ Meanwhile, the number of people expecting prices to stabilise is up 4 per cent to 40 per cent.” “The number of people expecting a decrease in house prices is up 5 per cent to 12 per cent - a big jump in one month to be sure - but an indicator
that the vast majority still aren’t buying into the idea of a market correction”. Mr Church says the trend becomes more pronounced when the latest results are compared against the first Institute poll, taken in November of 2016. “Back in November 56 per cent of people polled were expecting house prices to keep rising – which means we’ve seen a 13 per cent drop in expectations in the past eight months.” The poll shows that women are more likely than men to expect prices to stay the same (46 per cent v 34 per cent), and fewer women than men think prices will keep rising (38 per cent vs 50 per cent). The expectation of house price increases is also considerably lower in Auckland and Wellington (both at 37 per cent) than in other parts of the country – with 53 per cent in Wellington, 50 per cent in towns and 47 per cent in provincial cities still expecting continuing price increases. Politically, Labour voters are most likely to pick increasing house prices (54 per cent) with National supporters least likely to pick rising prices (34 per cent).
New Zealand First voters are most likely to pick a decrease (25 per cent) while those who vote National are most likely to pick a stabilisation in house prices (52 per cent). Biggest Impact: The Institute survey also asked respondents who they thought were responsible for having the biggest impact on property prices, and once again foreign investors have topped the list, with developers coming second and local investors coming third.
Mr Church says that, overall, the survey confirms the view of the Institute that the ‘artificial downturn’ engineered by the Reserve Bank has worked. “There’s no question that the imposition of high LVR restrictions has affected the ability of the market to operate and has dramatically slowed the market – particularly in Auckland. “What’s less clear is what the impact of that will be on supply given that Auckland still has a serious housing shortage and no clear solutions to reduce that deficit.”
Mr Church says that rationing of finance, by banks, is now also further exacerbating the problem. “There’s no shortage of demand – there’s just a shortage of money.” Mr Church says that this is probably best exemplified in the survey result showing that 18 to 30 year olds are the most likely group to expect continuing house price inflation (58 per cent). “This is incredibly sad because these are the same people who are most disadvantaged by the current slew of policies.”
Mr Church says that he expects the deterioration in house price inflation expectations to continue over the next few months but that sooner or later a ‘day of reckoning’ will have to come. “You can’t artificially constrain house prices forever when you have a shortage of homes – but clearly you can do it for a while – so there’s a reasonable chance that the number of people expecting prices to stay the same will exceed those who think prices to rise, by the time of the next survey.”

New kitchen brings family together By removing a wall and replacing the old galley kitchen with a new Jag design, the Clark Family of Howick now have a superbly functional kitchen and a whole new open-plan living area.
very easy for us. “They stuck to their schedules with everything installed on time and all the team members involved arriving punctually as planned. And their after-service was also good with a team member checking that everything had been finished perfectly the next day.”
“The original kitchen was decorated in white with black handles on the cabinets. Some of the cupboards were waterdamaged and it was definitely past its best,” explains Jag Kitchens designer, Megan Dyer.
So instead of the narrow and inconvenient galley kitchen, the Clarks now have a contemporary kitchen/living area they all enjoy using.
“It was also closed off from the dining room by a wall and a door, which made it feel quite confined. We had this wall removed and it really opened up and lightened the space. The result was a really smart and modern open plan living area with an excellent flow.” Megan and her clients, the Clarks, were all thrilled with the outcome. They decided to stick to the original white theme with white glossy floor cabinets (Jag Acrylic Arctic White) and a white engineered stone bench. Contrasting colours were introduced with the island bench and tall cabinets in a dark wood colour (Melteca Burnished Wood) and the laminate floors in a medium brown colour. “It all tones in well and has a very warm ambience with a feature window below the bench height bringing in natural light.” Megan adds. Fisher and Paykel – including the French Door Fridge, the Elba gas stove and the dish drawers. Anthony Clark says the family is “delighted with the transformation” and it all works well for them. “The new design brings us together as a family. Our children (aged 10 and 13) use the island bench for lots of their activities – rather than carting
stuff all through the house. They enjoy sitting there and do their homework while we are working in the kitchen and of course, it’s a great breakfast bar,” he says.
“My wife, Deanne, and I found the service from the whole team at Jag Kitchens was really good - right throughout the process. They listened to what we had to say and made it all

ell over a third of Kiwis are toughing it out during the cold winter months to save money on their power bills, according to a new survey. The latest HRV State of the Home Survey, conducted by research company Buzz Channel, has found 4 out of 10 people try to reduce their power bills during winter by using as little heating as possible. Almost half of Kiwis said that cold, dampness and condensation increases the cost of heating their homes. These cold and damp conditions were also responsible for worsening the health of adults (36 per cent) and children (27 per cent), ruining curtains, furnishings and carpets (37 per cent), and the resultant extra visits to the doctor were increasing medical costs for a fifth of Kiwis. The survey of 1040 respondents, which was commissioned by HRV and done in association with AUT Professor of Sociology, Charles Crothers, aims to gain an insight into issues facing New Zealanders in their homes. Professor Crothers says people are being forced to live in colder conditions to combat high power bills with 35 per cent of respondents saying their winter power bill is “excessive” during the colder months. He says heating costs hit renters far harder than home owners with almost half saying their power bill is excessive in winter and over half using as little heating as possible to reduce costs. “New Zealand’s housing
stock is substandard and while rentals need bringing up to standard, it’s key for existing houses to be brought up to standard and that new builds are made to a high quality,” he says. “For example, only 60 per cent of those surveyed, and just 36 per cent of renters, had insulation in their homes, which is not great because that is where a warm dry home starts.”
Far from ideal home and lifestyle These findings are far from what New Zealander’s see as ideal home and living situations with almost three quarters saying they would like to live in an energy efficient home with sustainable elements, such as solar power. Just under 70 per cent said they wanted to live in a warmer and drier home. While turning the heater or heat pump on is the most popular way of staying warm (74 per cent), this is supplemented by half of Kiwis wrapping up in a blanket or wearing shoes and socks when watching TV at nights. Professor Crothers says energy efficiency and sustainability were high on people’s radar even though for most it was still a dream. Four in 10 people believe solar power is “the way of the future” but don’t have it installed at their homes. A quarter of households have invested in energy efficient products or energy saving devices to help reduce heating costs. However, home owners are more likely than renters to
have invested in these. Fewer New Zealanders compared to last year have moved out of a house because of factors such as dampness, cold and mould (16 per cent). However, says Professor Crothers, 63 per cent of renters said they wanted to move out of the home they live in now compared to a third of home owners. “There needs to be a sense of urgency around the Healthy Homes Guarantee Bill, however the parliamentary process grinds on with the bill still at select committee stage. Housing is a leading issue coming into the election and while for some it is housing affordability that is an issue, for many it is the standard of housing we are living in that is most pressing.”
Sick homes, sick days
Professor Crothers says the condition of New Zealand homes has both social and health implications for occupants. A fifth of Kiwis take more than five sick days a year, with 5 per cent of the population – that’s around 230,000 people – taking more than 10 days off each year. For renters those numbers are even higher with 7 per cent taking more than 10 sick days. “Sub-standard housing can have a major impact on peoples’ lives because it uproots people from their long-term homes. It results in everything from children being forced to move to another school, through to cutting support from friendly neighbours and upsetting the sense of community people like to feel about where they live.”

nlike droll All Blacks coach Steve Hansen I can think of far worse fates than kissing my sister, which was his reaction to the drawn rugby series result against the British and Irish Lions at Eden Park on Saturday night. However her response to kissing an ageing, wrinkly brother might be different. The 15-all draw was a thriller, even if French referee Romain Poite did a Rainbow Warrior sabotage on a likely victory by reneging on his original decision to award a penalty against Lions hooker Ken Owens’ offside. In fact it was a double whammy; for had Poite not blown his whistle, Anton Lienert-Brown would have scored the winning try. It was to Hansen’s credit he didn’t whinge. And why would he want to rob joyous Lions fans celebrating their team’s shared success in completing a tour Graham Henry predicted would be suicidal? In truth, the Lions and harassed coach Warren Gatland were far better than their crit-

They also produced some exciting players, none better than 22-year-old athletic Maro Itoje who challenged Brodie Retallick’s right to be called the world’s best lock. He is but Itoje

tors Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox have been handsomely repaid for giving talented youth its head. Meanwhile they face a headache in deciding their best midfield combination after making Sonny Bill Williams and Ryan Crotty their first choice for the first Auckland test. However with Crotty injuring his hamstring and Williams copping a suspension after his ordering off in the second, Laumape earned his chance to partner Lienert-Brown and prove he’s a cannonball juggernaut in the tradition of Ma’a Nonu. With so much talent coming through, Malakai Fekitoa was left in limbo. However he belatedly made the All Blacks squad upon playing a blinder with his strong running and fierce tackling in the Highlanders’ Dunedin triumph against the tourists. Laumape’s magical offload to Lienert-Brown in a double tackle that sparked another to Jordie. Brave under the high ball in defusing bombs, Jordie was a determined attacker who posed the biggest threat to the Lions in those dying minutes. It was a performance worthy of Ben Smith, the man he replaced and replicated as the world’s best fullback. It’s been a remarkable season for the youngest Barrett who had hoped to play second-five outside his supremely gifted brother upon moving from Canterbury to the Hurricanes. But with Laumape and Vince Aso combining with such devastating effect in scoring 28 Super Rugby tries between them, Jordie slotted into fullback in the manner born. So much so that when the admirable Smith eventually returns from an inner ear problem, it could be in his former berth as wing. However given Jordie’s youth, he also needs to be carefully managed. Fox qualifies for British Open R
yan Fox has finished tied fourth at the Irish Open overnight to qualify for The Open Championship in two weeks time. The Beachlands local joins Michael Hendry in qualifying for the year’s third major championship to make it two Kiwis in the field at Royal Birkdale. The third ranked Kiwi carded a final round four-under 68 to finish on 17-under for the tournament, seven shots behind dominant winner, Jon Rahm of Spain who recorded an impressive four eagles throughout the week. There were three qualifying spots available and with Rahm already locked in for the 146thOpen Championship, Fox secured one of the three places after missing out by one shot on two different occasions. Fox, the son of All Blacks great and current All Blacks selector Grant Fox, told the Times of his elation finally nailing his Open Championship spot. “Obviously it’s been a great two weeks…secured a tour card for next year and having just missed out on an Open spot last week it was nice to get some redemption this week,” he said. “Can’t wait to get to Royal Birkdale in a week or so.” In a press release, Fox said he

was ecstatic. “Third time lucky, I just missed out last week in France, and I missed out on world rankings at the Australian Open at the start of The Open Qualifying Series so I’m very, very happy to get the job done this week,” said Fox. “It was a great golf course this

week and a lot of fun to play. I’m sure Birkdale might play a bit tougher than what we’ve got this week. I haven’t played a lot of links golf in my career, I managed to play an Open at St Andrews a couple of years ago and I loved the experience of playing links golf. I’m looking forward to the
opportunity again.” With rounds of 67, 66,70 and 68, Fox earnt NZ$425,774 this weekend to make for an exceptional two weeks on tour after his top five finish last week to pocket NZ$812,454 in just two weeks. Not only does the last two events significantly help Fox’s
bank balance, the 30-year-old more importantly continues to climb up the Race to Dubai standings to now sit comfortably inside the top 100 to be in 28th place and ever closer to securing his European Tour card for another season. The exciting Rolex Series continues for Fox with the Scottish Open proving to be the perfect warm up event for the Claret Jug next week. However, players won’t be treating it as a warm up with there once again being a mammoth $7,000,000 USD on the line. Danny Lee has finished in a tie for ninth at the Greenbrier Classic on the PGA Tour but sadly couldn’t join Fox to claim one of four qualifying spots for The Open. Lee, who was the defending champion at the Greenbrier Classic recorded rounds of 64, 68, 70 and 69 to finish six shots behind leader Sebastian Munoz. Lee has returned to similar form which saw him inside top 50 in the world rankings last year with his recent nine finishes reading T14, cut, T5, 6, T49, T47, T3, T22 and T9. The Rotorua professional has one final chance to qualify for The Open at next week’s John Deere Classic.
