aleb Kendall’s friends and family thought a P lab caused the fire which razed their garage and destroyed a car. Kendall and his girlfriend and another couple live in a flat adjoining the garage on Latham Avenue, Pakuranga. He and his flatmates are struggling now as they had no car or contents insurance and there were items stored in the garage, including a family member’s ashes. The Fire Service had five appliances attend the blaze at around 2pm last Thursday. A large number of police officers as well as one ambulance unit were also at the scene. There was also an unusual number of media there, possibly
because several explosions had been heard at the fire site. One person suffered moderate injuries. Senior station officer Stuart Millar said at the scene the explosions were likely to have been caused by the car’s tyres or the structure’s fibrolite cladding. The fire service is investigating the cause of the blaze. Kendall and his mates – aged 18 to 20 and former Macleans College students – have only lived at the property three months and it is their first flatting experience. “The police haven’t told us anything conclusive yet but there was a dodgy power box on the wall in the garage that our electrician friend told us from day one was unsafe,” Kendall said. The loss of the car is a huge blow. It belonged to his flat mate
and best friend Billie. “It was an old school MKI Golf Volkswagen, his pride and joy that he’d been working on for about two years and saved up for since he was 15,” said Kendall. “Not only was it his hobby, but it was his savings. “He had posted the car up for sale the night before. “Also that was where he stored his stuff as we were not fully unpacked and most of his clothes are gone and tools, not to mention the priceless things like his grandfather’s ashes and family memories. “Sadly, we have no house insurance, no car insurance, I guess we didn’t expect this to happen.” As to speculation there was a clandestine P lab in there, particularly with the explosions, Kendall
takes the finger-pointing on the chin. “It was nice to see everyone helping out and showing their support...our neighbours are absolutely fantastic but my parents and friends asking me if I had a P lab in my garage was definitely disconcerting,” he said. “The fireman said the loud bangs were most likely the tyres of the car. “People go straight to P lab because of the area but, really, our neighbours are lovely and we just can’t afford to live somewhere nicer. “No one’s on the benefit either. We all have jobs. We are still without power or money – we are struggling to figure out where we should go from here. “No one has contacted us.”

ou know something’s afoot when an organisation as austere as ACC tries to get funny. On Tuesday the Accident Compensation Corporation - the Crown entity set up to deliver New Zealand’s personal injury insurance scheme – sent out a press release attempting to cash in on the Pokémon Go craze. Its media release goes like this: “A Pokémon Go user walks into a bar... and into a lamp post, a wall, a table, a pedestrian and a pot hole.” Ouch! Okay, I get it. They’re trying to tap into this phenomenon, connect with the masses. ACC goes on: “As Pokemania sweeps across the country, so does the likelihood of injury. Whilst minor injuries have already been reported overseas, ACC is yet to receive any Zubat, Pikachu or other Pokémon related claims, and we don’t want you to be the first. “So as ‘trainers’ of all ages and levels of fitness venture out into the real world in pursuit of virtual creatures ACC offers some common sense Poketips to help you stay injury free and ‘in the game’. Keep your phone at your side when walking and be situationally aware. ■■ Stay hydrated, wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately. The Pokémon may be naked but you shouldn’t be. It’s cold out there. ■■ To improve your performance
and prevent sore muscles, warm up and stretch before heading out to hunt. For some ole time gamers this’ll the most physical they’ve been since playing pinball in the nineties. ■■ Take the human equivalent of Pokestops whenever necessary, so you’re battle ready when need be. ■■ Move to a safe area when preparing to throw Pokeballs, and stop walking to perform the action. ■■ Play as a team so you can look out for one another and be vigilant in your environment, especially if looking for Gastly at night.” Wait what? Naked? Warm-ups and stretches? What the heck is going on here? That same day I downloaded the app. I needed to understand. And after several failed log-on attempts due to server issues, I was in. Within minutes I’d captured my first Pokémon, right in the Times’ lunchroom on one of the tables. The app’s innovation is its use of augmented reality (AR). The Pokémon are placed within real-life views captured by the phones’ cameras. I could see this critter. On my phone. In front of me. Amazing right? My elation was overcome by guilt and then fear. What if a colleague walked in? My curiosity piqued on Monday night. I’d caught part of a news item but didn’t get it. My teen daughter
and her mates were about to dash up to the local reserve in the dark. Their phones showed Pokémon present there. I handed my daughter a torch. She was beside herself. “Dad, they’re not real.” And the following night at home – with the app now on my phone – I couldn’t help but switch it on. One showed on the street not too far away. So I went hunting. My son – in his 20s - pulled up and leapt out of the car, incredulous. “Please tell me you’re not tracking Pokémon.” The app combines cartoon action with local landmarks, and has users hustle about outside looking for places to catch the monsters. It also features “Pokestops,” where users collect supplies and “gyms” to let their characters battle. There’s one of these Pokestops in the middle of Botany Town Centre and it’s visible from a couple of our first floor windows. I could not continue hunting Pokémon without replenishing the red ball things (Pokeballs). My phone showed insane activity down there. Research forced me to walk by after work. I counted 19 people topping up supplies. What made me smile was learning the Hell’s Angels HQ in Whanganui is listed as a Poke Stop. They’re getting a lot of traffic there. World media can’t ignore it. Pokémon Go, one US journal notes, has already been installed on a phe-
nomenal 5.16 per cent of all Android smartphones in the US, according to SimilarWeb, an app analytics firm. For context, that’s more installs than dating app Tinder. Almost double. SimilarWeb estimates that by the end of the week on Android, Pokémon Go will have more active users than Twitter! Now ACC are bracing themselves for a possible rise in injuries. A radio station host this morning revealed being a little scared out on his own in the early hours tracking the monsters. A little foolish but timely to remind people there can always be a downside. A case in point - police in Missouri put out a warning that armed robbers were believed to be targeting people hunting for Pokémon. Criminals had been lying in wait at Pokestops. “Apparently they were using the app to locate people standing around in the middle of a parking lot or whatever other location they were in.” Happy hunting.

Developing Howick’s tourism map profile By Marianne Kelly
A
drive to put Howick on the tourist map has moved on from concept plans to hands-on work which will result in reasons why local and international visitors should visit the south-east. Howick Tourism Incorporated was set up three years ago by chairman, Des Topp and a committee of volunteers who established an initial data base and set the ball rolling. Mr Topp retired recently and Charmaine Chapman, marketing and events team leader at the Howick Historical Village has taken over the reins. She wants the community to know that Howick Tourism is an active organisation and is welcoming more tourist-related businesses to join the campaign. The Howick Local Board adopted the Howick Tourism Development Action Plan which was drawn up with ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development), an Auckland Council CCO (Council-controlled Organisation). However it is holding back $40,000 because it wants
clarification on a number of points in the plan, including purchase of a visitor service van, a digital campaign and website along with an administrator. Whatever the outcome, Ms Chapman says the tourism group will knock on doors for further funding to get a website up and running and an administrator funded. “We want to model ourselves on the Matakana Coast Tourism group,” she says. MCT receives funding from membership group fees, services and events, advertising, sponsorship and project grants. Every two months Howick Tourism has an open meeting for operators on the data base where guest speakers are invited to talk about issues relevant to tour operators. Currently there are 93 organisations covering accommodation, activity, arts, attractions, business association, entertainment, golf, government, information services, marae, market, multimedia, publishing, shopping, tour operators, transport, vehicle hire, wellbeing and wineries. Another small group is working with Ms Chapman to get tangible things under-

way. Members are Blyth Biel (Sea Fury Charters), Cherry Tawhai (Te Tuhi), Vickie Bowers (Uxbridge Arts and Culture), Ellen Roy (Polish Heritage Trust Museum) and Wendy Witheridge (Auto Rentals Direct). “We are discussing the vision and what we need to provide,” Ms Chapman says. “Statistics tell us that tourism is New Zealand’s second biggest export earner. Central Auckland is over-

populated with visitors. Everything is booked out. “So we want to move tourists out of Auckland Central, helping the outer areas to establish and develop visitor and tourist trade.” Currently the group is working on the aucklandnz. com website where a page on Auckland East is established. But Ms Chapman says it needs new clips and pictures. “We want to create a visitor trail brochure covering Howick, and along the Pohutukawa Coast to Maraetai and Clevedon. We want people to stay here for longer than a day. “We are phoning everyone on our data base encouraging them to be listed on the website and we’re offering workshops to those who need it.” Ms Chapman says Howick Tourism would also like to be represented at the national travel show, TRENZ next year with the help of match funding from ATEED. The group is welcoming new members to join Howick Tourism. Email Ms Chapman at village@fencible.org.nz. The Auckland NZ site is www.aucklandnz.com/discover/howick.
Careless driving causing death case: no discharge without conviction Samuel Young, who was last year found guilty of careless driving causing death, has failed in a bid to be discharged without conviction. Young, 19, appeared before Judge Jane LovellSmith at the Manukau District Court last week. On April 11, 2014, Young was pulling out of Topland Drive in Flat Bush onto Stancombe Road. That action resulted in 17-year-old motorcyclist Brody Sutherland falling
from his bike. He was subsequently struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. He died at the scene. The court heard Young “simply misjudged the speed and distance the motorcycle was travelling”, the NZ Herald reported. He was charged with careless driving causing death and was found guilty following a judgealone trial at the end of
last year. Young was training to become a Baptist pastor and a conviction of this nature might provide significant barriers to him pursuing that, the Herald reported. . But Judge Lovell-Smith said the consequences of a black mark against the defendant’s name were indeterminate, with the congregation and committee making a final decision on any potential role in the church.
FREE orthodontic consultation
While she assessed the offending as at the lower end of the spectrum, she called the consequences “tragically catastrophic”. She accepted Young was genuinely sorry for what he did but declined his application for a discharge without conviction, said the Herald. Young was sentenced to 250 hours community work, disqualified from driving for 10 months and ordered to pay $5000 to the Sutherland family.
The man behind the 1080 infant milk formula contamination scare had an extra 15 months added to his jail term after last month pleading guilty to five drugs charges Jeremy Kerr – from jeremy kerr Mellons Bay – was sentenced in March in the High Court at Auckland to eight-and-a-half years in jail. He appeared in the same court on Friday for sentencing on the drugs charges. Last month Kerr admitted one charge of supplying a class C drug, and four charges of possession of a class C drug with intent to supply it. Media reported that in 2011, police carried out a search of Kerr’s storage units and found thousands of BZP and TFMPP party pills and equipment used to press the pills. Although Kerr claimed the pills were only worth $2 each, market value placed them at $20 to $40, or a total of up to $1.2 million, according to a summary of facts, Stuff said. Kerr was sprung by police following a sting on other associates who had been subject to a surveillance warrant as part of a large scale operation called Operation Ark. At the 1080 scare trial it was heard his blackmail attempts cost businesses and the Government $37 million. Kerr, 60, had the country on high alert in 2014 after he posted anonymous letters to Fonterra and Federated Farmers threatening to contaminate baby formula milk powder with 1080 poison, unless the Government agreed to stop using the pest poison by March 2015. It was revealed in March that Kerr’s blackmail attempts had cost Fonterra, Federated Farmers, supermarket chain Foodstuffs, police, the Government and other dairy companies $37 million in investigation and increased security costs. Justice Geoffrey Venning in March ruled following a disputed facts hearing that the Crown had proved “beyond reasonable doubt” that Kerr sought to gain financially when he wrote anonymous threat letters to Fonterra and Federated Farmers in 2014. He owed nearly half a million dollars to creditors. Following that hearing, Justice Venning said that despite Kerr’s “altruistic” intent to change Government policy surrounding indiscriminate 1080 use, it was inconsistent with the content of the letters. The letters were accompanied by samples of infant formula contaminated with 1080.The businessman received about $100,000 in royalties a year from Feratox, a ground-deployed poison alternative to 1080.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, July 14, 2016 — 5
Wattie, 96, influenced many young lives W
alter (Wattie) Fleming, who took special delight in tutoring students in all aspects of mathematics across his long teaching career, has died aged 96. He was a foundation teacher at Pakuranga College and founding principal of Edgewater College. Mr Fleming trained at Dunedin Training College in 1938/1939 and was a primary school teacher for a year. During World War II he served in the Royal Navy specialising in the fairly new field of radar. After the war in 1945 he did a two-year rehabilitation refresher university course and became a secondary school teacher.
Before moving to Howick, he was a teacher at Paeroa and Waiuku District High Schools. He was head of mathematics and physics when he joined the Pakuranga College foundation staff in 1960, two years later becoming deputyprincipal, a position he held until 1968. He moved on to Edgewater College as its foundation principal in 1968 and retired in 1979. Mr Fleming was born in Dunedin in 1920, living on a farm in Otokia on the Taieri Plains, Canterbury. He went on to become a talented rugby player, at one time representing Otago. In later years Mr Fleming

was a past-president and life member of the Probus Club of Pakuranga. He and his wife Enid moved into the Howick Baptist Rest Home and Hospital and watched the new development from their rest home rooms with great interest.
He moved into the hospital wing as his Alzheimer’s disease progressed and his family says he still enjoyed chatting with visitors, “even if he wasn’t sure who was who”. “Wattie was an honourable man with great integrity,” they say. “He was patient, persevering, loved family and his good friends. He leaves his wife Enid of 71 years, three children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. ■■ A private cremation was due to be held today (July 14) followed by a memorial service at Edgewater College, Pakuranga at 2pm, then refreshments at Howick RSA, Wellington Street, Howick.
New man at the helm for Howick Lions Grant Taylor has been appointed club president of Howick Lions Club for the next 12 months. A resident of Howick for 39 years, Mr Taylor owns and runs his own business in Cockle Bay. He has also served on the Cockle Bay Residents & Ratepayers for the last 35 years, 25 as chairman. “I have been a member of Howick Lions for
four years and I am very much interested in local community activities with a special interest in youth and their opportunities,” he said. “As with all Lions, I want to serve and strengthen the community we live in. “Howick Lions has served the Howick community for over 50 years and I’m delighted to be taking over as president in the year
when Lions International will be celebrating its centenary.” To celebrate Lions’ 100th anniversary, Lions Clubs around the world are being asked to help reach a centennial service challenge goal of serving more than 100 million people by June 2018. “With that in mind, my priorities for the next year will include developing
more programmes with the youth of Howick and strengthening Howick Lions’ involvement with the blind and partially sighted, including the guide dog appeal,” Mr Taylor said. “I would also like to thank out-going president Neil Hornblow for all his hard work over the last year.” To find out more about Howick Lions visit http:// howicklions.blogspot.co.nz
Cycle storage interim measure Installation of a cycle storage shelter at the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal has created confusion for some people who initially assumed the facility was a shelter for bus passengers until they discovered the cycle hoops. Why, one Times reader asked, could this structure have not been used as a shelter for bus passengers in the absence of anything else? However, construction has started on the new
ferry pier at the end of Ara Tai which is expected to be complete towards the end of this year. The bus stop, with shelters for passengers, will be located at the end of the pier so people can easily transfer between bus and ferry. An Auckland Transport spokesman says cycle facilities will also be installed at the new pier. The existing shelter may be relocated, “but it’s more likely we will put in
something designed for that facility”. “The existing shelter and cycle hoops will not go to waste as these will be put in storage and used at another Auckland Transport facility.” The cycle shelter was installed to encourage alternative transport, such as walking and cycling and using buses. It is located in place of a Bucklands Beach Yacht Club container near the dinghy lockers.
Phases for construction of the new pier now underway include piling work for the fixed wharf while a pre-manufactured pontoon and gangway will be floated and secured into place. Land-based construction work on the bus stop and turnaround area will be the last phase. Construction is taking place between 7am and 6.30pm on Monday to Friday and between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays.

Hand vies for national beauty title
In her first foray into the world of beauty pageants Camilla Hand has been chosen in the top 20 finalists for Miss Universe NZ. The former Macleans College student started full-time work as a trainee clinical perfusionist at Auckland City Hospital at the beginning of this year. She obtained the position after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Auckland majoring in physiology. Currently Camilla, who lives in Half Moon Bay, is studying towards a postgraduate diploma in clinical perfusion. She will head to the Miss Universe grand finals on September 3 at Auckland’s Sky City. “I have never been involved in any other pageants before Miss Universe New Zealand, she says. “However, I was encouraged by my friends and thought it would be an amazing experience.” Contestants are creating their own events to raise money to support Variety the children’s charity which will receive 50 per cent of the proceeds raised. The balance goes towards the cost of the competition. Camilla held a fund-raising bake sale at the Parnell Farmers market last Saturday. ■■ To vote for Camilla go to www.iticket. co.nz/events/2016/sep/camilla-hand or www.fb.me/camillahand.

The police staff torch relay marking 75 years of women in policing came to town last week. The relay, which is on its way around New Zealand, made a stop at the Fo Guang Shan temple in Flat Bush on Thursday. The two halves of the illuminated torch, which represents the New Zealand Police tohu, started a tour of the 12 policing districts on June 24 simultaneously in Cape Reinga and Bluff. One half is travelling up the South Island and another down the North Island, stopping off for events in a number of towns and cities along the way. Counties Manukau East area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller was amongst the guests. “It was fantastic to have a community event involving local schools and cultural groups to mark 75 years of women in police,” she said. “It was particularly special to have Botany College and Carter-Chan Dance perform and celebrate the diversity and harmony between the community and police at our local temple. “We’ve come so far that women police officers are the norm, rather than a novelty in our district which is great.” The national police torch relay will culminate and see the two halves of the torch joined together at a national parade of retired and current women Police staff in Wellington on August 1. ■■ Police would love for any retired staff interested in participating in any of these events to attend. For more details please email 75Years@police.govt.nz.

Retirement off the agenda for Wendy By Marianne Kelly
A
fter 14 years working at the Eastgate Christian Centre Op Shop and approaching the age of 70, Wendy Bell decided she was going to retire last March. She started her tenure at the shop because she felt God had called her into the work. “I never expected to be here this long,” she says. “So I thought I’m going to retire this March. But I think he [God] has gone deaf on that. So I will work until he tells me to stop.” Not that she’s disappointed. “I don’t want to leave now. I love it here. It motivates me,” she says. “What would I do if I didn’t come here? It’s like a family. “I’m the mother hen and these [co-workers] are all my chooks, male and female.” As a member of the Eastgate congregation the Howick woman became involved from day one when the church bought the neighbouring building to establish an op shop. She volunteered to clear a garden between the church and the new site. In the beginning the small op shop handled clothing only. It was suggested why not help out? “I hated clothes,” she says. “I thought ‘this is not me’. I had never bought any label clothes so had no idea what was what. “Being tall, I used to make my own clothes. I never went

clothes shopping.” So she was pleased when the church extended the shop to furniture and bric a brac and she moved over from the clothes section. “We had no tables so the bric a brac was set out on sheets on the floor and the books were in boxes. It was hard really,” she says. She worked 30-hour weeks for a couple of years and became full-time 12 years ago. Now she’s the full-time assistant manager. “I love the excitement, the things that come into the shop,
big or little things,” she says. “When someone is looking for something we say we will call them if we get it. And then it comes in. “It’s like Christmas every day. We never know what we will find.” Ms Bell is constantly amazed at peoples’ generosity and “the amazing amount of lovely high quality stuff that comes in”. “It blows me away how generous people are. We regard this as a recycling shop.” She’s also been there long enough for many regular customers to become friends. “I’ve seen pregnant ladies who have had their babies who go on to school and then college. A family came in one day and a young teenager turned to me and said ‘are you still here’?” The shop has many regulars, some who come in every morning to browse. “I love Saturdays,” she says. “It’s a highlight because it is our customers’ day off and they are more relaxed. There’s a different atmosphere in the shop.” In her spare time she helps with the church’s weekly community dinners. She knits booties and makes framed X-stitch Bible verses for the church’s missions. But her op shop customers are never far from her mind. She’s not averse to homework, taking newlyarrived jewellery home to sort, clean, label and price.

Satisfaction in council wanting Aucklanders want more evidence that the council is accountable, effective, and providing value for money for ratepayers and residents, according to The Citizen Insights Monitor. The research measures Aucklanders’ views on the performance of the council across a range of areas, including overall satisfaction, confidence in decision-making and trust in the council. The council’s baseline reputation score sits at 45 out of a total 100 points.
Fifteen per cent of respondents were satisfied with the council’s performance while 36 per cent were dissatisfied; 17 per cent say they trust the council to make the right decision while 47 per cent do not. Residents living closer to the city centre and those in South Auckland tend to rate the council more highly than those who live further out. Areas that residents cite as examples of the council’s positive impact include improving transport and the

environment and continuing its positive commitment to Auckland’s cultural diversity. The council’s chief executive, Stephen Town says the results show that it needs to work harder to earn the trust and confidence of the citizens and ratepayers. “Aucklanders want more visibility of council decisions and greater confidence that we are focussing on the right things,” he says. “We also need to do more to reach Aucklanders living further from the city centre.”

Our housing realities My grandmother tells me they were all talking about how to buy a house back in her day. I also remember it being talked about around the dinner table when I was a kid. It appears we haven’t moved far. The easy option for this column would be to list all the things we are doing and tell you it’s all in hand. The above is actually true. House construction is at a 10 year high. Much more land has been opened up for housing. We’ve targeted speculators with new taxes. Hundreds of millions in first home buyer grants are available. And 42,000 new apprentices are in the pipeline. I want to be able to tell you we’ll have it all fixed soon. I want to say your children will be able to afford a house next year. But it’s not that simple. Instead, I’ll offer a some blunt yet needed words: ■ No amount of creative “government can solve the problem” type schemes will fix this. We need more land opened up and less red tape, so the people that build houses can get on and do that. Government and overregulation is not the solution. It’s been the problem for too many decades and governments don’t make good house builders. ■ Migration is not the cause. It’s populist and sounds good at 6 o’clock. But unless we want to say no to Kiwis coming home, no to importing essential skills, and
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany no to the valuable foreign student market, the easy immigration soundbites won’t help. Foreign buyers make up four per cent of house sales and a considerable amount of migration is actually our own choosing to move home. ■ Quick fixes could do more damage than good. For every person wanting to buy a house, there’s another sitting there with a significant mortgage. Yes, we could shock the market, pass drastic law changes and intervene in the name of good politics. But the ramifications are massive. State intervention that sees thousands of families owing more to the bank than their assets are worth is a financial stability risk not worth entertaining. The hard reality is that it comes down solely to supply. We need to open up more land. We need to push council to speed up their planning. And we need more pipes and roads in place to facilitate construction. The practical solution of increasing land supply isn’t always exciting, but it’s what is needed and what is being delivered. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany
Enter the deadly Dragons’ Den By FARIDA MASTER
T
he Spice Boys at Ormiston College were focussed on winning Dragons’ Den, part of the Young Enterprise Scheme(YES), when the Times interviewed them - two days prior to the competition held at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Their confidence paid off in the fiercely competitive regional finals with 50 teams making a business pitch to 30 judges at AUT on Monday morning. Spice Boys won first place in East Auckland along with a $1000 cheque that will help as capital investment for their business. Macleans College team Life Ed won the second place. Mark Snoad, assistant principal Ormiston Senior College is thrilled that they have managed to bag not only the first place but also the third place with another team Little Print beating the rest of the 11 East Auckland Colleges to the winning post. “This is the second win in a row. Last year, team Escape won in East Auckland as well,” he says. The Dragons’ Den is a competition within the Young

Enterprise programme that marks students on the quality of their business pitches. While the business plan of the Spice Boys involved working on and selling Telza, a tasty sauce from a treasured family recipe, the real challenge for them was to comply with the food and safety standards and being label compliant, whilst bottling the sauce. Year 13 student Hetu Shah, CEO of Spice Boys says that the secret recipe of the tartar based sauce with lots of other ingredients came from another team member, Paramveer
Basra. “It’s Paramveer’s dad, a restaurateur who discovered the secret recipe and shared it with us. We also got a lot of support from Food Bowl, a facility operated by NZ Food Innovation that helps people develop business ideas.” The team now plans to sell in a retail environment at Ormiston Pak’nSave. “Our school has established a good working relationship with Pak’nSave Ormiston,” says 17-year-old Hetu who also works in the same supermarket. “

A three way tie-up By Farida Master
R
eaching out, taking responsibility and leading the way are some of the values that Bucklands Beach Intermediate School (BBI) is instilling in their young leaders at school. Encouraging them to care about the less fortunate, the school has worked on a unique three-way tie up with Macleans College and a school in Fiji. Twelve-year-old Natalia Boyle, one of the student leaders says that after listening to Paul Ross of `Making a Difference for Pacific Schools’ they were inspired to do something about it. Deputy principal Mark Steveson encouraged students to connect with a school which is not so fortunate and find out how they could be involved. Year 8 student Bryan
FIJI ACTION GROUP: Deputy principal Mark Stevenson(left to right) with Macleans College prefect Emma Sproul, student leader BBI Natalia Boyle, Macleans prefect Vihingum Siriwardane and BBI Fijian partnership leader Bryan Jeyashankar. Photo supplied
Jeyashankar says they found out that the life destroying Cyclone Winston had hit Nadi Airport School badly and they needed desperate help. “We discovered that the school has been badly hit by the cyclone, and they are struggling for things like A4 paper to write on. The students also don’t have soccer
and rugby balls to play sport with or musical instruments for their music class,” he says. Once they got the approval from the school board and principal, the student leaders planned fundraisers like a movie night and a fun run which is scheduled for term three. The young leader group also plan to have a stationary collection drive.
Fallen tears
“We’d like to have stationary that still works and people don’t use,” says Bryan. Natalie adds that in a unique partnership, the leader group is mentored by student leaders of Macleans College. Macleans College prefects, Vihingum Siriwardane and Emma Sproul are mentoring BBI Fijian Partnership leaders Natalia Boyle and Bryan Jeyashankar with guidance from deputy principal Mark Stevenson. Bryan believes that the mentoring has helped them become stronger leaders. “They give us something to aspire for,” he says, and then quickly adds: “If the Times readers have any music or sporting equipment to donate and would like to jump on board with us, please ring the Bucklands Beach Intermediate School office on 534-2896.”

Residents talk to Jude Dobson about village life.
Many tears were shed recently after the Orlando shooting and the US Senate rejected gun-control measures. At the time of writing this is still an ongoing issue. You may be forgiven for thinking ‘what will it take’? In New Zealand a firearms licence is required by anyone wishing to possess or use firearms. This includes arms dealers, their employees and anyone under 18 years of age who wants to use or possess an air gun. If you are 18 years or older you do not need a licence to own or use an air gun unsupervised. You do need a standard firearms licence to use pre-charged pneumatic air rifles with an exception being the airsoft and paintball sports. Recently the CAB was asked: “Is it legal to buy a gun on the internet?” The answer is yes, however the buyer must have a NZ Firearms Licence. Selling a gun to someone who does not have a valid licence carries a maximum penalty of a $1000 fine or three months in prison. It is the responsibility of the seller to check that the buyer has a current licence. Anyone who buys a gun without a licence can be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. This carries a maximum penalty of a $5000 fine or four years in prison. A person visiting New Zealand who wants to bring firearms with them to go hunting will need to obtain a visitor’s firearms licence and an import permit for the firearms brought in to the country. Police have seven basic rules: ■■ Treat every firearm as loaded. ■■ Always point firearms in a safe direction. ■■ Load a firearm only when ready to fire. ■■ Identify a target beyond all doubt. ■■ Check the firing zone. ■■ Store firearms and ammunition safely. ■■ Avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms. ■■ Imitation firearms – it is an offence under the Arms Act to possess or use an imitation firearm without lawful proper and sufficient purpose. Blank-firing imitation firearms may be considered “firearms” under the law. Contact a local Police Arms Office to check this out. ■■ Solutions is a regular column from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Library Building, Pakuranga; phone 576-8331 and Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, rear Food Court entrance, Botany Town Centre, phone 271-5382 or 0800-267-222 for free, confidential and informative help.

red Thomson turns 104 years old today and can still deliver a bowl, or joke, with ease. He has been a member of the Bucklands Beach Bowling Club for over 20 years or, as one of his many adoring club mates put it this week, “since Adam was a cowboy”. Thomson joined the club after moving into the Pakuranga Park Village retirement home in 1991 and has been an enduring presence on the green ever since. He often still sponsors tournaments at the club, even though he had to stop playing a few years ago, and was more than happy to demonstrate his bowling technique at a special birthday celebration there on Tuesday. Talking to the Times at the well-attended afternoon tea,
Thomson spoke of his love for the sport and club. “I’ve enjoyed every minute on the bowling green. It doesn’t matter which green I’m on, I’ve always enjoyed it. I don’t ever remember a time or a game that I haven’t enjoyed.” His move to east Auckland all those years ago didn’t stop him from playing regularly at his old club in Mt Eden either, where he is a life member and a former president. That changed. “It got very difficult and then it became just about impossible when they took the car off me.” That was about a year ago, Thomson said. “That’s the worst thing that’s happened to me, really. It [the car] made a world of difference to my life. But they were afraid I could have a stroke, you know. That apparently
happens to people getting on to my age.” Unfortunately he doesn’t make it down to the clubrooms as often any more, but still likes to go along and watch when he can. Thomson celebrated his birthday milestone at his Mt Eden club yesterday and has another function at Pakuranga Park Village tomorrow. His wife died shortly after they moved to Pakuranga in 1991. They have three sons, two of them in Australia, and three grandsons. And, of course, he has his bowling family. “You get to know them pretty well; they’re a good bunch of people – the bowlers,” he said. “They haven’t got financial worries or other worries when they get onto the bowling green, they’re just good mates. They’re a
changing group, but there’s still some of the old characters around.” Eileen Neilsen, his Bucklands Beach club mate of 13 years, was full of compliments when it came to the birthday boy. “He’s a mean bowler, I tell you, even when he was 102. We’ve always loved him, he’s just a darling. He’s always been a darling.” “Purr, purr, purr,” Thomson cheekily replied. As for the question often asked of people his age, he was adamant. “I don’t disclose it, no. I don’t want a lot of other people around about my age,” he then added with a smile. A little while later, however, Neilsen possibly let the secret slip. “I think he still has a cigar every day, don’t you Fred?” “If I can get my hands on one.”
A Rolls Royce just for Dorothy She looked like the queen mother waving out to pedestrians as she drove in a regal 1937 Rolls Royce. As a special treat for Dorothy Holford who turned 103 recently, Sharon Pittam, an activities team member of the Howick Baptist Home (HBH) Senior Living and Care, thoughtfully organised a ride for the birthday girl, in a classic Rolls Royce. Staff at the HBH Senior Living including several who were off duty that day turned up to make Mrs Holford’s birthday a very special one. After cutting a birthday cake, Gary Thomason a friendly neighbour took `Lady Jane’, as he fondly referred to her, for a drive through Eastern Beach where the senior citizen soaked in the breathtaking views, something she doesn’t do very often. Mrs Holford couldn’t stop smiling as she it was the best birthday she’d ever had.

HOP Card change a fiasco I fully agree with Councillor Sharon Stewart when she says the process of obtaining a gold HOP Card could have been made a lot easier for seniors. Indeed, if Auckland Transport (AT) had set out to make a simple process difficult, they succeeded admirably. Because it was not properly thought through at the outset, seniors have had to ascertain their position bit by bit through a series of announcements from AT and personal experience at AT’s Botany Service Centre (ATBSC). The initial announcement stated that from July 1, 2016 the Superannuitants’ Gold Card could no longer be used for free travel on Auckland buses, trains and ferries and everyone would need to obtain and pay for a (blue) HOP Card. There was no mention of whether the pensioner free concession would continue to be available. A subsequent AT release was necessary to say that it could be loaded onto the new card. When I applied for my Hop card at ATBSC, I found out that they would not accept payment in cash, and photo ID was required. I had not picked this up from any AT advertising. Was there any? And was there any guidance for seniors who did not have a credit card or cheque book, driving licence or passport? Did AT stop to think that a number of elderly people only take a bus because they can no longer drive? Then AT decided that from
1/7/16, HOP Cards with a pensioner concession loaded would be coloured gold. Was there adequate notification that existing blue HOP Cards could be used after that date? I suspect not, as I am aware of several seniors rushed to get a gold one. It has only become known very recently that once a new Gold HOP Card has been acquired that it will be cancelled if it has not been activated within 60 days. And AT tried to keep it secret that a SCG could be used for one month after July 1. The fact that information packs on the changes could be obtained from AT does not seem to have been widely made known. It seems that AT concentrated on making the changes to best suit themselves and, before announcing them, did not put themselves in the shoes of the older public. The matter has been badly handled. If the group responsible are still in their positions at AT when motorway tolls and how to collect them comes up for serious discussion, then all I can say is God help us. HEH Perkins Botany Downs

What a wonderful idea! It was with great delight I read of how it was now possible to park one’s car at Lloyd Elsmore Park and take the ferry bus to Half moon Bay. I well realise it may have been established some time ago but until I read your article, I had no idea of its existence. It must, for most Howickians, shorten their drive considerably, but more importantly, gone is the dreadful task of trying to find a park at the ferry. Now all that is needed is a timetable for the service. Thank you for the information. P Lambert Howick

So why did Auckland Council cut the budget for Kauri Dieback and remove a staff member when the councillors all voted to keep it at 100 per cent (and try to cover it up)? And why has another staff member not been replaced? Our kauri are dying every day and this is how the council’s top executives treat political decisions to support biosecurity work on the problem with contempt. Heads should roll! VILLAS AND INDEPENDENT APARTMENTS
No forward planning costs more in the end The letter from Bob Wichman (Times, June 9) points out that there will be a problem when three services will be using the existing two tracks into Britomart and that millions of dollars will be needed to widen the tunnel. This seems to echo the bad planning of two previous constructions. The Auckland Harbour Bridge and the Newmarket Viaduct are prime examples of the lack of forward planning to handle the increase in traffic volume. Years after the initial construction, clippers had to be added to the harbour bridge and as second viaduct was built. Had these structures been initially built as they now stand, the total costs would have been a lot less, being relative to the time erected. If forward planning had been in place at Britomart, the third tunnel now needed could have been built at the same time as the other two.

Unauthorised parking
There had been road works going on around the Botany area. When I pulled into the driveway that day I noticed a digger parked within the property line with cones around it. As there was no note or anything suggesting they had asked for permission, I couldn’t understand how they were allowed to park on private property. Why not the kerb in front that is classified as ‘council’ property or down the road where there is a park reserve? The next day I emailed Auckland Council to get some answers. I finally heard back a week later with the response ‘Thanks for your email. For future parking issues, please call Auckland Transport on 09 355 3553 or visit the Auckland Transport website: www. at.govt.nz.’ Not impressed. Name withheld Botany

Paul Harris Fellowship Changeovers, presentations, awards, this is that time of the year the Rotary calendar goes into an overdrive with activities and events. Adding to the buzz was Somerville Rotary Club that meets at the ALL SMILES: Philip Wilson Howick Club every with his wife Andre. Wednesday night at Times photo Farida Master 6.30pm. Last Wednesday was a special day in the club diary. Somerville Rotary Club members and guests from neighbouring clubs cheered as the Paul Harris Fellowship was conferred on two well deserving Rotarians. The amiable assistant governor Philip Wilson, and the hard working club president nominee Andrew Harvey were recognised for their outstanding commitment to the community. Somerville Rotary Club president Denise Trial said: “Both men have displayed the values of being a Rotarian through their efforts to community enhancement directly and indirectly over a sustained period of time.” The Paul Harris fellows were presented with a lapel pin, a medallion and a certificate. District Governor Jennie Herring also conferred the Publicity in Action District Award on Rotary Club of Somerville for doing exceptionally well, including their organisation of several clubs to promote Rotary in the Howick Christmas Parade. Sanctuary safety T
en years ago Yvonne Vannoort had a dream for Sanctuary Dental to be a place where people felt safe having dentistry. This philosophy extends to a sister practice in Pukekohe and the business now has a combined team of 30 people. It is paramount to Yvonne and her team that their clients feel safe emotionally, physically and financially. Emotional safety, Yvonne says, “means we need to be non-judgemental and kind. People need to feel safe to tell us what they need and know that we give time to listen to their story and understand them”. “Physically safe means ensuring that the treatment they need is pain free and gentle.” Financial safety, she says, ensures that people have a treatment plan and all the options are explained before they agree to go ahead. Lyndsey Roughton, the treatment co-ordinator with Sanctuary over the last 10 years, plays an important part here. She also arranges interest-free plans with GE and Gem Visa so that treatment needed is achieved now rather than delaying for financial reasons and allowing problems to become worse and more costly.
The dream at Sanctuary has been to have a team of people looking after others and who love to go the extra mile. “We have a team that truly love their work and helping people achieve their health goals,” Yvonne says. “They are working from their heart.” Ten years ago Yvonne introduced a number of technologies that have facilitated these aims of Sanctuary Safety. The technologies are still being used and have been updated over the years. For example, Yvonne was one of the pioneers of technology that made crowns in one visit. These crowns have saved many teeth that otherwise would have struggled over the years. All the dentists at Sanctuary and Pukekohe are experienced in the use of this technology. Yvonne now has the advantage of seeing an overview of dentistry as some of her clients have been with her for nearly 30 years. “I love seeing the families that I have known for years. I’m seeing the children and grandchildren of my original clients. It’s such an honour.” Orthodontics is an important part of the work at Sanctuary and Pukekohe,
Yvonne Vannoort
especially for these young ones. Recognising how important breathing and swallowing patterns are during development of the face and teeth, and making changes if necessary, has an influence on children’s health for a lifetime. The Pukekohe practice has recently focused on helping parents whose babies are tongue and/or lip tied. These babies struggle to feed well, mothers may find feeding painful and colic and reflux are also signs. Laser treatment releases the ties, in conjunction with chiropractors and a lactation consultant. Immediately after treatment these babies often feed well for the first time. “It can be quite over-
whelming for the mothers and my team have been known to have tears too, it’s emotional,” Yvonne says. Yvonne has a reputation for a conservative approach to dentistry with an understanding of natural medicine as well. This has led to people coming to Sanctuary from all over New Zealand for advice. Many people have also benefited from the use of intravenous sedation over the years and the team of dentists are experienced using this wonderful tool for relaxing people and allowing them to snooze comfortably through their treatments. Yvonne thanks the Times team for the contribution they have made over these years to inform the community about the good experiences people have at Sanctuary. To celebrate this first 10 years, Sanctuary is asking for nominations of deserving people for the gift of free dentistry. “We would like to recognise people who give their time and energy to others and who may also need some care themselves,” Yvonne says. ■■ To submit a nomination send your nominee’s story of why you think they deserve this gift to tracey.tebble@sanctuarydental.co.nz.

The Fencibles United Premier Men secured a must-win game against Northland FC on Saturday at Riverhills Park in Pakuranga. Sitting just outside the promotion zone by one point, the Fencibles men put together a solid performance against their bottom-of-table opposition, winning 3-0. Zane Christensen scored early to put his side ahead and ease some nerves, before Matt Chant extended the lead in the 17th minute. Alex Saniel then secured it 63 minutes
in, finishing an impressive passing move between several Fencibles players. The defensive efforts of Jack Allen, who has just returned after six weeks away with a hamstring injury, earned him Player of the Day for the home side. Fencibles will now play top-of-the-table Takapuna away on Saturday. They beat the North Shore side 3-1 at home in the first round and will be looking for a similar performance to keep the momentum going towards promotion.

Locals’ photos shine Four local photographers have seen their pictures selected amongst the top 30 images in the 24 hour dayin-the-life competition, the Nikon Auckland Photo Day. Auckland Festival of Photography programme coordinator Bev Goodwin said it is New Zealand’s only photographic festival. “It seeks to bring together artists, academics, curators, students, amateurs and professionals for the aim of encouraging the public to celebrate the art of photography,” she said. Nikon Auckland Photo Day runs from midnight to midnight on one day in June in Auckland.
It is an open access public competition run over 24 hours. For one day only, Aucklanders are asked to capture an image which reflects their Auckland. “There were four entries from your area in the top 30 which is a great result considering that about 300 photographers took part.” The locals are Aaron Whyte of Pakuranga with One Tree Hill (left); Albert Ng of Botany with A short trip to Sydney; Xueweihe Xueweihe from East Tamaki with The drizzling rain curtained the Auckland Harbour and Hongcan Chen of Pakuranga with Handing Out The Steamed Stuffed Bun.

Corrections site gets $2.75m upgrade By Farida Master
T
hey were all there. Next door neighbours, people from the Marae, Ministry of Social Development, Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall, Salvation Army, probation officers, community service supervisors and the NZ Police, as the vibrant Corrections Minister Judith Collins recently opened the newly refurbished Panmure Community Corrections site at 118 Jellicoe Road, Panmure. The Community Corrections site that’s got an upgrade of $2.75 million, manages over 600 offendersfrom Panmure to Pakuranga, Howick, Flat Bush to Otara—on more than 900 community-based sentences and orders, including home detention and community work. Community Corrections holds offenders to account, ensuring they comply with their sentences as well as reduce their likelihood of reoffending, thus helping them become productive members of society. the Department of Corrections, Ms Collins said that as part of the safety upgrade, the reception counter at the site now has anti-climb safety features. “The open plan work area allows staff members increased visibility. The security is further enhanced through closed circuit camera surveillance and
improved lines of sight,” she said. Other safety features include glazed interview rooms equipped with duress alarms. The site has also been provided with an upgraded waiting area and more space for programme delivery and training for communitybased offenders with the aim
of reducing re-offending. The refurbishment of the Panmure site is part of a fiveyear, nation-wide renewal programme to make Community Corrections’ sites more secure and better equipped to support offenders to live a life free of crime. It is to create a safer environment for both staff and visitors. Acknowledging some tough challenges staff face at the facility, Ms Collins said: “I know our staff deal with the less well-behaved people in society day in and day out and I wish to acknowledge each and every staff member who go way beyond the call of duty. “ Speaking highly of staff members who assisted a family that came to the Panmure Community Corrections Facility in desperation after they were evicted from their home on a Friday afternoon, she said: “The staff members stayed on after a long week and assisted the family to find immediate temporary accommodation for the weekend. “This commitment tells me that the community corrections is a lot more than a brand new building with fresh paint and high tech security features.”

part from it being a spectator sport, the spate of cookery shows on television has certainly sparked off an avid interest in the culinary art. Putting on their aprons and gloves for the hottest bake off were the master chefs at Howick College as they were cheered by their friends and class mates. It was English teacher Rebecca Poole’s idea to host the Hottest Home Baker competition that involved a series of four challenges throughout the year — starting with a Gluten Free Challenge, followed by a Cupcake Challenge and a Healthy Lifestyle Challenge. “The nine finalists that managed to qualify were asked to do something challenging,” says Mrs Poole. The only kitchen rules were: ‘not your usual brownie or cupcakes.’ With a line up of judges that took their job very seriously included principal Iwa Ropati, assistant principal Steve James, head of hospitality Rebecca Roberts and Janet Strode Penny from Antoinette’s High Tea and Cake Shop in Howick Village. It was Year 9 student Amelie Laing who won the first place and was declared the Hottest Home Baker of the year. Amelie’s inviting orange marmalade cakes served with yoghurt had one of the judges and proprietor of Antoinette’s High Tea and Cake Shop asking the student to share her recipe so that they could name a similar creation after her! Year 10 students Jasleen Kaur and Harsimran Hundal managed to lure the judges’ tastebuds and score second place with a delicious coke bottle cake/cupcake burgers and shortbread fries creation. Last year’s winner of the Hottest Home Baker competition, Meghan Woodfield’s caramel cheesecake with a chocolate swirl won the third place.

t’s the periods of silence that are the most magical in Howick Little Theatre’s current production Ladies in Lavender. Not just the odd pause, but minutes of deliberate silence backed by haunting classical music. Not a word is spoken for the first few minutes of the play as the two key players, Jo Crichton playing Ursula Widdington, and her sister Janet Widdington played by Carleena Walsh are immersed in a radio concert beaming in to their remote Cornish home. (The beauty of the moment spoiled only by the whispering of some in the audience who feel moments of silence must be filled in). Close friends in real life, these experienced actors expertly portray the quaint lifestyle of the elderly sisters in post World War I 1930s England. This is a story of unrequited love as the naive Ursula falls for a young Polish violinist Andrea Marowski played with

gusto by Nik Rolls who endears as he struggles to learn English interspersed with outbursts of Polish and German. Pam Browne brings things deftly to earth playing Dorcas the housekeeper with firm and at times hilarious interjections. In his first HLT appearance Steven Arnold, playing Dr Mead on one hand wields the voice of authority but just as easily dissolves into doe eyes when he encounters Sarah Venville playing the sweet holidaying artist Olga Danilof. When Olga spirits Andrea to a career as a violinist virtuoso in London Crichton leaves us in no doubt about the pain of the loss. Set designer Nick Martin has achieved a remarkable effect as the stage moves seamlessly from beach to living room, to bedroom, to a glimpse through
the kitchen window, and out to the garden. Dealing with realism is no more demonstrated than in the final scene when yet again not a word is spoken; just the sound of the virtuoso’s music. With an extensive range of facial expressions Ursula and Janet, Dr Mead and Dorkas convey their emotions. The content of the entire play is wrapped up in this extraordinary sequence. And there are few dry eyes as the sisters comfort each other, Crichton spilling genuine tears of elation, for Ursula’s virtuoso, but deep sorrow for not just a lost love, but a lost youth. ■■ Ladies in Lavender plays at 8pm until July 30 with a 2pm matinee on July 17, at Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga.

The concert opens with Escher’s Musique pour l’esprit en deuil or Music for the Spirit in Mourning. Composed when Escher, a communist, was in hiding during World War II, it is a poignant insight into the world of a war composer. Known for his love of Strauss, music director Edo de Waart has chosen the composer’s spirited celebration of the everyday Sinfonia Domestica, a humorous and serious portrayal of domestic bliss with mum, dad and baby. ■■ The NZSO’ Masterworks concert is at 7pm on July 22 at the Auckland Town Hall, Central Auckland.

abour’s entry into the housing debate has drawn praise for its leader Andrew Little who is described as knowing the difference between a property speculator and a property investor. When asked if any of Labour’s housing announcements would target investors, Mr Little clarified that they would target speculators, “those looking for short-term gain in the housing market.” Andrew King, executive director of the NZ Property Investors’ Federation says a property investor provides people with rental accommodation. They are not in the business of trading or speculating in property. “We have seen many examples recently of people living in overcrowded homes, or garages and cars. This clearly demonstrates that we need more rental properties for these and many other people to live in,” he says. Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church says Labour appears to have recognised that the most effective way to deal with the

housing crisis is to work cooperatively with private developers and Mums and Dads to build as many homes as quickly as possible. “That’s not just a good idea, it’s also the only practical way to start turning the tide on runaway house price inflation,” he says. However, while the proposal
to build 100,000 new homes over 10 years is laudable, Mr Church says the institute does not believe that the proposed price points are achievable, particularly in Auckland. “Land costs in most parts of the city are already approaching or exceeding $500,000$600,000 per section in July 2016. So unless there is an additional proposal to heavily subsidise these homes, there is simply no way to achieve, and sustain, house prices at that level.” The recent decision to cut the tax liability test from 10 to two years (‘Bright Line’ test) was to ensure that speculators were paying their share of tax while not penalising property investors who were adding to the overall stock of rental accommodation. “The proposal to increase the Bright Line test to five years risks blurring that distinction,” Mr Church says. “Since it is unlikely that a speculator would hold a property for five years before selling, the main effect would probably be to punish landlords selling for legitimate reasons.”

he inaugural New Zealand Flower & Garden Show has been postponed to November next year. It was initially scheduled for this November. Duty of care required in using the exhibition space at Okahu Bay and Bastion Point provided by Ngati Whatua Orakei is given as one of the reasons for the delay. Event director Kate Hiller says the Flower & Garden show is a new and unique event for this historical area of Auckland. “Upon application we have discovered that the event triggers several clauses in the Reserve Board Act which require a longer application period. Regrettably this will cause a delay that is not tenable for the success of the show this year.” While the leadership team is saddened that show enthusiasts will have to wait another 12 months, she says “we are excited that we have a longer development period to bring the world’s best garden designers, a coterie of experts and some incredible displays and experiences to life”. The show will be the time for New Zealand’s top gardening and landscape design talent to shine, she says. Visitors will not have seen anything like it,

that the mana of the area is respected and maintained, all while creating an event that inspires people from all cultures and all walks of life.” Ms Hillier says stakeholders, including ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development), Auckland Council, and Auckland Transport, have been right behind the project. ■■ The New Zealand Flower & Garden Show will run on November 22-26, 2017 at Okahu Bay and Bastion Point, Auckland. We are only 6 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well
TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Stunned Matilda groggy as NZ delivers big blow Kiwi Super Rugby teams outscored their Australian foes 203-63
W
ith New Zealand teams walloping their Australian rivals to leave Matilda groggy in the last round, it looks as though only South African’s Lions can challenge them for the Super Rugby crown. The Lions have amassed 52 points to lead the table and showed their class in Hamilton early in the season when beating the Chiefs in a fast-paced game more commonly associated with teams here than in the Republic. But despite a much tougher New Zealand conference, the Chiefs (51), Crusaders (50), Highlanders and Hurricanes (48) have all scored well to cement top eight playoff spots. The only New Zealand team to miss out are the rejuvenated Blues who thrashed the top ranked Australian Brumbies 40-15 last up and will be stronger when sevens Olympians Augustine Pulu and the Ioane brothers, Rieko and Akira, return next year. With the Chiefs thrashing the Reds 50-5 and the Cru-

Agnew’s Angle saders the Rebels 85-26, the Waratahs were the only Aussie team to earn respectability when beaten 28-17 by the Hurricanes. Add the defending champion Highlanders 34-8 result against Argentina’s Jaguares and the depth of coaching and playing strength in this country is highlighted. Steven Luatua wants his All Black jersey back judging from the dynamic performances he produced against the Hurricanes and Brumbies in his last two games for the Blues. With new Highlander All Blacks Elliott Dixon and Liam Squire performing strongly on debut against Wales in the Dunedin test, Luatua looked destined to have become the forgotten man. That changed dramatically when the rangy No 8 demonstrated power, pace and
a high work rate in concert with flankers Jerome Kaino and Kara Pryor to remind the selectors he’s still a contender. The latest 40-15 thrashing of the Brumbies was the Blues’ best of the season following strong efforts against the Crusaders and Hurricanes. With five-eighths Ihaia West and Piers Francis moving the ball swiftly to speedy right wing Matt Duffie and exciting sidestepping fullback Malani Nanai, the Blues backline was electrifying. Full marks to coach Tana Umaga for getting his players to move the ball, create space, back up and offload instead of dying with it when crashing into defenders. At last, players are using their brains as well as their brawn. A win against the stilldangerous Waratahs at Eden Park on Friday night would be nice way to finish their season. Saturday’s clashes between the Crusaders and Hurricanes and Highlanders and Chiefs should provide
fast action thrillers with all four in top form. The Crusaders have the strongest forwards and centre and right wing Johnny McNicholl (3), Ryan Crotty (2) and Codie Taylor (2) contributed seven of their 13 tries against the Rebels. However the Hurricanes have a tenacious pack and will be hoping for some magic from Beauden Barrett and the Savea brothers to counter their opponents’ set piece strength. A horrendous home trip from South Africa and Argentina will negate the home advantage the Highlanders would otherwise have enjoyed in their match against a Chiefs side that hit overdrive in scoring eight tries against the Reds, with Damian McKenzie and Seta Tamanivalu scoring doubles. With five-eighths Aaron Cruden and Anton LeinertBrown combining beautifully and wing James Lowe also running hot, the Chiefs are firing on all cylinders. Fox has nervous wait for Rio news It’s now a waiting game for local golfer Ryan Fox, who has done everything he can to qualify for the Rio Olympics. The Beachlands star, son of All Black legend Grant Fox, this week moved ahead of fellow Kiwi pro Michael Hendry in the RYAN FOX New Zealand rankings. Fox will now wait for the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) to confirm his place at the Games, which start in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next month. Fox needed to finish in a tie for seventh or better at the Slovakia Challenge on the European Challenge Tour to give himself a chance, and he did so in dramatic fashion. The 29-year-old was one under par after 13 holes when he sunk consecutive eagles on the 14th and 15th, finishing tied for fourth and securing himself the second New Zealand spot. “I’m pretty happy, it was a bit of a nervy wait this afternoon and we were hoping the maths was right too. I left it a little late on the back nine but happy to hit some good shots under pressure,” Fox said. “Mike [Hendry] has played some very impressive golf over the last few weeks to make it a great little battle between us and I’m sure he’s going to get his second win in Japan soon.” Hendry finished fourth at the Japan PGA Championship on the Japan Tour over the weekend. With Danny Lee holding down the number one position in New Zealand, Fox would fill the remaining spot in the two-man New Zealand Olympic golf team. The NZOC will announce its decision on Monday.

Green Machine want strong finish By SCOTT YEOMAN Pakuranga United are looking to finish their regular season on a high this weekend and restore some pride in the jersey and club, coach Pita Alatini says. Saturday’s 43-33 loss to Waitemata put them out of top four contention and Alatini said his premier side were naturally disappointed with the result. “We didn’t have a very good start, gave them a bit too much leeway, but we worked our way back and then just...made too many errors in crucial times and paid for it. “It’s taken us out of top four contention so best we can do now, after the last round [this weekend], is play for fifth. Their performance was typical of the season so far, Alatini said. “It’s not where we were meant to be, but in saying that we’ve had plenty of opportunities this year to
really stake our claim and be in the top four, but we just haven’t been able to finish it unfortunately.” He said they still have a lot to play for, however, and that it was important the side restore some pride in the jersey and club for the year. A positive fom the game was a standout performance by halfback and captain Dwayne Polataivao, who has recently returned from international duties with Samoa. Alatini said Polataivao played a key role in Pakuranga fighting their way back from an early deficit. “He was outstanding for us on the weekend – his leadership and his game.” Waitemata scored seven tries to Pakuranga’s three, with 20 of Pakuranga’s points coming after halftime. The Green Machine will play Suburbs at home this weekend.

Whitley all revved up By SCOTT YEOMAN
A
lexandra Whitley crossed the Tasman to chase her V8 Supercars dream and has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. The 22-year-old from Toowoomba in Queensland moved to Pakuranga 18 months ago to pursue a sponsorship opportunity with SsangYong New Zealand and is already making a name for herself, on and off the track. She wants to be the first female to race V8 Supercars around the world – a big dream for someone who started the sport at the age of 16. “I just decided to have a go one day and I loved it and it just grew from there,” she told the Times this week. Whitley already has a string of top five finishes in the SsangYong Actyon Racing Championship, including an impressive second place finish during the ITM 500 weekend in Auckland. She has also pulled in two firsts, a second and a third place at four Mahindra North Island Endurance Series events. “Representing all the girls - I’m quite proud to be that person,” she said. “It can definitely work against you, but I want to turn the negative into a positive and use it to my advantage. “Growing up it was hard but it’s getting a lot less discrimi-

natory towards women. There are a lot more [women] involved and people are realising they actually can do it. So it has become a lot better as the sport has grown.” This determination and indifference seems to be working for the small town, country girl. She returned last weekend from the New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy in Dunedin which, over the years, has trained the likes of Shane van Gisbergen, Hayden Pad-
don and Mitch Evans – some of New Zealand’s biggest motorsport stars. Whitley was one of only eight motorsport athletes to be chosen and the only female. “The things I’ve learnt at the Motorsport Academy – I feel like I can now jump ahead in leaps and bounds, so that’s going to be great.” She works at the SsangYong Takanini dealership when she’s not training or racing and spends as much time as she can at the Pukekohe and Hampton Downs tracks. Her aim is to race fulltime. “It’s limited to finances, if you have the money you could race every weekend if you wanted to,” Whitley said. For that reason she is constantly on the lookout for financial support from local businesses. “It’s the bread and butter of racing...you’ve got to have the backing. I feel that I go beyond for my sponsors and would love to be able to get some more on board and help them out as well in return for helping me.” As for her new home, she has quickly settled into Pakuranga and Auckland, despite the colder climate. “I’m just a local now, really. Everyone at work calls me the adopted Aussie. I’ve fallen in love with the area, so looking to buy a house here now.” Some more wins on the track should help her do just that.
