‘Reprehensible racism’ By NICK KRAUSE

B

OTANY MP Jami-Lee Ross has slammed Labour’s claims wealthy Chinese are to blame for the spike in Auckland house prices. Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church says the claims by Labour housing spokesman Phil Twyford are “reprehensibleâ€? and “an exercise in unveiled racismâ€?. Mr Twyford at the weekend released ďŹ gures to support his claim that people of Chinese descent accounted for 39.5 per cent of the property transactions in Auckland between February and April. However, Mr Church describes the data used by Mr Twyford as “shonkyâ€?

and says it has so many holes in it that it would be marked with an ‘F’ if it was submitted as a High School Economics project. “Mr Twyford uses ‘Asian-sounding’ surnames as his means to identify which buyers are ‘Asian Investors’ – without any way of knowing whether the buyer is a New Zealand immigrant who lives here, or an investor based in China. “On that basis Mr Twyford should be blowing the whistle on Scottish foreign investment in this country because a large number of Kiwi homes are owned by people who have names starting with ‘Mc’ or ‘Mac’. “This is the sort of racist sideshow we’d expect from NZ First – not a

serious political party with pretensions to hold the reins of power. Mr Ross said it was unfortunate that Labour used “questionable and potentially stolen data to attack anyone with a Chinese sounding surname. “Surnames are not a proxy for ethnicity. Nor are they a good way of distinguishing between New Zealanders and offshore purchasers, he says. “We live in a very multicultural community. The reason people see non-European faces at auctions is because there is a large number of non-Europeans living in our community, as residents and citizens. We are richer for this ethnic diversity. The requirements for non-resident

purchasers of property to provide an IRD number, offshore tax information and set up a NZ bank account will provide more accurate information when it is implemented later this year, he says. “But the more important solution to housing is actually building more houses and keeping interest rates low. No amount of scapegoating one ethnic group changes the fact that the supply of houses is the biggest problem we have. “Through the creation of special housing areas, the fast-tracking of consenting, and the use of Crownowned land for housing, we will see more houses built in Auckland. ➤ Turn to Page 2

Traffic volumes getting out of hand By Marianne Kelly Frustrated at the whims of traffic signals? For the past couple of months there has been plenty of it – frustration with the traffic that is – in the south-east and over that period the Times has been trying to establish with Auckland Transport (AT) what is causing it. Towards the end of April the Times received reports from frustrated motorists experiencing heavy backlogs on Ti Rakau Drive between Botany Town Centre and the turnoff to the Waipuna Bridge to the South-Eastern Highway, particularly in evening

peak travel times. The perception was that there had been a change in traffic lights phasing which was causing the traffic to back up. Then in May complaints started about the lights on the corner of Ti Rakau and Te Irirangi Drives where a police camera has been installed to catch red light runners. As the lights phasing let fewer cars through, more people were observed pushing the limits to get through the intersection. Then a blockage was reported at the Ti Rakau Drive/Harris Road intersection. The Times asked Auckland

Transport (AT) if there had been a change in the traffic lights phasing causing the traffic to back up. It also asked what the lights strategy at the intersection where the police camera was installed. It was mid-June when an AT spokesperson replied, saying there is “a very heavy East-West/ West-East flow along Ti Rakau Drive, which does seem heavier than it has been previously”. “Currently the Eastbound and Westbound directions appear similar to previous months.” He said, a fault with one of the detectors at the Ti Rakau Drive/ Harris Road intersection had

been logged with the contractors. But, he concluded that “on a heavily congested route, only a small change can significantly affect a route”. In other words, AT seemed to be saying that frustrations are arising as the result of traffic volume behaviour rather than the lights phasing. There’s some agreement from a Victoria University researcher who says two key components when it comes to inefficiencies in traffic are slowing down and stopping which results in fuel and lost time costs. Dr Paul Teal is heading a multidisciplinary research project to design a traffic control system that reduces operational costs and delays. Dr Teal’s research will explore

using mobile devices as a way of predicting traffic movements, thereby enabling a new kind of management strategy. “Although the traffic control system in New Zealand is relatively advanced, it can’t anticipate traffic flow, which is part of the reason why roads get congested,” Dr Teal says. “It’s also why we often find ourselves sitting at the lights even when there is no traffic around. “Our project aims to use mobile devices in cars to convey key information some time before the vehicle arrives at an intersection and use that information to set a more appropriate phasing of traffic lights.” ■■ What do you think? Action quickening on ferry terminal By Marianne Kelly

T

HE long-awaited Half Moon Bay ferry facility is expected to be operating by October next year. In a report to the Howick Local Board (HLB), Auckland Transport (AT) says the project is still on target for completion in September next year. HLB has allocated $2.5 million to the $4.3 million budget which will be shared by AT/Auckland Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency. AT says a firm budget will not be known until the detailed design phase is sufficiently developed. The project involves a 96 metre long and five metre wide wharf/ walkway; a 21 metre long, 9.5 meter wide, and three metre high pontoon; and a 24.5 metre long gangway. AT says the fabrication contractors expect to have the pontoon units ready for storage soon, while the gangway and shelter structure is being prepared for instruction and acceptance before being placed in storage in readiness for stage two. Resource consent for stage two is expected to be in place by the end of this year. It will cover the fixed walkway to the pontoon location; installation of the pre-manufactured pontoon and gangway, along with a bus facility and turnaround area. Construction will begin early next year, AT says. Since 2003 the former Manukau City Council and Auckland Regional Transport Authority and, from 2010, AT have conducted many investigations into potential solutions for the busy hub which caters for the needs of passenger and vehicle ferries, and recreational boaties. It’s also become the main heavy transport and ferry hub for Waiheke and other Gulf islands. A concept plan was adopted in 2012, following consultation with stakeholders, including HLB, the Harbourmaster, Bucklands Beach

Yacht Club, Half Moon Bay Ferry Users Group, Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Group, marine operators, passenger ferry users and residents. It came with an estimated cost of $35-$45m which didn’t include a multi-storey car park being mooted at the time. The plan included reclaiming land to create a new ferry terminal building for AT commuter ferry services and the SeaLink vehicle service; redesigning the car parking area; and future-proofing for a potential multistorey car park. However, because of the cost, the plan was shelved and replaced with the scaled-down version underway now. The new facility will be built at the end of Ara-Tai, south of the current ferry wharf location, a position that local stakeholders have questioned (see Times May 28, page 15). However, in its report to the local board AT says the location provides suitable access directly to the marine channel for ferry users. It also provides suitable safety and segregation between the existing passenger ferry services, vehicular ferry services and leisure boating activities. Specialist technical advisers were commissioned to review the concept plan’s proposed location and orientation for the new ferry pontoon, gangway placement and wharf structure, AT says. Their studies support

the proposed pontoon and gangway placement, and the wharf structure being located at the end of Ara-Tai. The location was also refined following input provided by a maritime engineering specialist and the Harbourmaster. The advice confirmed the position of the pontoon is best suited to deal with the effects of tidal flows. The pontoon will be constructed to international marine standards and follow the same principals for similar locations across Auckland Harbour, AT says.

Buslinks

TRAFFIC engineering for a bus turnaround area and landside design is underway for the new Half Moon Bay ferry facility. But local stakeholders have concerns about a perceived lack of a structured traffic plan to support development of the new facility (Times, May 28, page 15). In its report to the Howick Local Board Auckland Transport (AT) says an initial review into the current and proposed vehicle movements has been completed and the results of the review are being worked through by its operations team. Work will also continue in collaboration with the adjacent vehicle ferry service operator, Sealink. The plan co-locates ferry and bus services in one area. The proposed

bus turnaround area, bus stop and shelters, situated at the end of Ara Tai will segregate buses from the rest of the car parking area which, AT says, is expected to reduce current congestion. Bus stops with shelters for passengers will be moved to the end of the new ferry wharf so people can hop off the bus and walk directly onto the ferry walkway. The walking distance from the bus stop to ferry, AT says, will be similar to the current distance walked between the existing bus stop and wharf. However, it acknowledges that some parking may be lost to accommodate the proposed bus turnaround at the end of Ara-Tai. At this stage AT says it only has an indication of land required for the

turnaround. But it is investigating how to offset parking losses, caused by relocation of the bus turnaround area, by using current bus stop spaces adjacent to the existing ferry facility. Parking losses will be mitigated in other areas to ensure they are kept to a minimum. More work is being done on other facilities, such as park and ride, AT says, and there are plans to install cycle racks in close proximity to the ferry facility. ■■ Consultation on a new bus network for East Auckland, including buses connecting to the Half Moon Bay ferry facility, will be held in late September. Illegal planting upsets neighbours By Haley Thom and Marianne Kelly A GROUP of residents are angry that a neighbour has planted two pohutukawa trees on a road berm which have the potential to eventually block their ocean views. But Auckland Council has established that the trees were planted illegally and will be removed. Bucklands Beach Ratepayers Association president Evelyn Brown was concerned about the two trees planted on a road berm adjacent to 2 Musick Pont Road and she wasn’t alone. She and six other disgruntled residents grouped together to speak out against the trees. They

were worried that the new trees could have the potential to grow considerably in the next few years. Mrs Brown said she had received numerous complaints from locals about the trees. Merilyn Griffiths and her husband Dave have lived in the area for four years and were worried that the trees would grow too large and block the ocean view. “We have already lost our view of Rangitoto Island because of the wall and the house being so far forward on the section,” Mrs Griffiths said. “If they wanted to put something there they could have planted shrubs.” However, Auckland Council has

been on the case and the owner of the two pohutukawa will remove them in the coming weeks, says Malcolm Page, Local and Sports Parks South manager. A park ranger visited the site and discovered that the two trees were planted on the legal road berm adjacent to 2 Musick Point Rd. They were not planted by the council. Mr Page says the pohutukawa were planted to replace two palm trees. “But approval to plant them was not obtained from Auckland Council. “We are working closely with the owner to decide what could replace them.”

Auckland residents are not allowed to plant on berms, Mr Page says. Permission may be given

occasionally but this requires an application to Auckland Transport for a licence specific to their circumstances.

Gingerbread horses to hit ovens A

CALL is going out to home bakers to “bake a difference” and support a campaign for volunteers who give disabled children the opportunity to ride a horse. Members of the Totara Park Riding for the Disabled (RDA) group in Manukau are participating in the national Gingerbread Horse Campaign running from July 27 to August 2. New Zealand Riding for the Disabled (NZRDA) is asking individuals, schools and businesses to register as bakers, then bake and decorate horse-shaped gingerbread biscuits using the items provided in their baking packs. From July 27 bakers will sell their gingerbread biscuits to friends, family, workmates and the general public before banking the proceeds with NZRDA. NZRDA is hoping that more than 1000 Bakers will take part in the 2015 campaign, with the goal of baking up to 80,000 biscuits and raising more than $100,000 for the national organisation. Baking legend, Jo Seagar is the official spokesperson for this year’s campaign and is providing her special gingerbread recipe, along with prices and incentives, to the baking participants. She says she hopes that people get involved regardless of their baking abilities. “It’s all about giving it a go as a ‘baker’ and supporting a fantastic cause in a fun way.” People can sign up as an individual, business, or school bakers online at www.gingerbreadhorse.co.nz. Each baker is sent a free baking pack that contains everything they need, including a recipe card, horseshaped cookie cutter and biscuit packaging. Bakers are asked to produce at least 24 biscuits from July 27 using Jo Seagar’s recipe.

BAKING TIME: RDA rider, Noah Wheeler, left, and his cousin Ava Noelle Tuck, have been busy decorating gingerbread horses. Times photo Wayne Martin

They can decorate the biscuits as they choose, from dipping them in melted chocolate to icing them and adding sprinkles on top. Once the biscuits are decorated the bakers must use the supplied bags and inserts to package their goodies for sale. The biscuits are sold from July 27 for $2 a biscuit. To help with this, bakers will receive an advertising poster in their baking pack, as well as a handy guide detailing the different ways bakers can sell their biscuits. All funds raised from the Gingerbread Horse biscuit sales allow the 55 RDA Groups throughout New

Zealand to continue making a positive difference to the lives of disabled children and adults in the community. The Totara Park RDA provides therapeutic riding sessions to more than 55 riders each year. With 48 riders coming each week for 40 weeks, a total 1920 rider programmes are held annually. ■■ New Zealand Riding for the Disabled Association (NZRDA) is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation which provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy a safe, healthy, stimulating, therapeutic horse riding and horse-related activities. Each year NZRDA assists more than 3200 riders throughout its 55 RDA groups. Participants undertake a combined 90,000 plus riding sessions each year, supported by 1800 volunteers. ■■ More information is online at www.rda.org.nz.

From life to death REVIEW BIRTHRIGHTS

Genre: Drama Written by: David Williamson Directed by: Nick Martin Reviewed by: Marianne Kelly Times rating: HHHHH

T

AKE a dose of family rivalry, long-held resentments and throw in one of the most bittersweet human conundrums of all, child surrogacy, and the stage is set for high drama. It takes the Australian social comedy writer David Williamson to turn on the blender and produce a powerful piece of work that combines these human conditions with commentary on social and political views of the time. Howick Little Theatre has embraced Williamson’s Birthrights,

set in Sydney, Australia, covering 18 years from 1984 to 2002. It tells the story of Claudia, played by Alana Pearce, offering the chance to have a baby to her older sister, Helen, played by Elizabeth Noon, until the audience is introduced to the baby, now a spunky 18-year-old Kelly, played by Georgina Silk. Williamson explores the impact that this one act of generosity has on the three women, along with partners, the bombastic business man Mark, played by Terry Hooper, and an artistic dreamer Martin played by Ian Milnes. The story is bound together by Pam Browne who plays the women’s pragmatic mother Margaret, skilfully working her way through the aging process and bringing the play to a conclusion with the realities of death. Director Nick Martin has schooled this small team into a tight group with close to real-life empathy dem-

onstrated by the sisters with each other, their partners, their mother and the irrepressible Kelly. This play also delivers a challenge to accommodate a period of 18 years involving 29 scenes set in a variety of locations. Terry Hooper, doubling as set designer, and Nick Martin have collaborated to provide a minimalistic set hinged on opening and closing two gauze-faced room dividers. Lighting designer Rebecca Lehrke completes the illusion with strategically placed coloured lighting, underneath the raised stage and from the ceiling. And the ingredient that turns this clever design into a triumph is the work of Martin’s son Timon who has written an original music score for the HLT production. Timon Martin is musical director and guitarist for high-profile New Zealand recording artist, Kimbra, who is based in Los Angeles. But he

returned to New Zealand to work on the Birthrights script with his Dad. It’s the music that sweeps the audience through the ebbs and flows of the story, as well as providing an element of anticipation between set changes. The set design also delivers a dramatic, yet poignant conclusion as the family comes to terms with Margaret’s death and the re-ignition of precious family bonds.

The play’s underlying plot travels a well-trodden route that can be easily anticipated. But the drama is in the skilled delivery and the script’s twists and turns. Be prepared for tears, laughter, and a heart-stopping journey. ■■ Birthrights runs at 8pm until Saturday, August 1 with a 2pm matinee on July 19, at Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga.

Something to really chew on STUDENTS are being encouraged to enter a competition which will make them think about where their food is coming from and the impact on the environment their choices make. For the second year, the New Zealand Vegetarian Society is running its Society Film Competition which is offering $5000 worth of prizes for films between two and five minutes long. Three secondary school categories (for years 9-13) are animal advocacy, nutrition and health, and protecting the environment; two intermediate school categories (years 7-8) are ethical aspects of using animals for food, and nutrition and health; primary school category (years 0-6), films on any aspect of vegetarianism. Julia Clements, president of the New Zealand Vegetarian Society says young people are making decisions about what is important. “We want to encourage students to be considered and confident in their lifestyle choices.” She says the impact of animal agriculture on the environment is becoming more evident and is a leading cause of deforestation, species extinction, ocean dead zones and pollution. “The film competition encourages our young generation to explore these impacts and how simple, everyday choices can make a difference.” It’s open to currently enrolled school students. Prizes are being donated by South Seas Film & Television School, Linda McCartney’s NZ, Quorn, New Way, Hardy’s Northland, The Animal Connection, Plug in Pest Free, Ethicalshopper.co.nz, Hell Pizza and ELE Clothing. A People’s Choice vote will determine the overall winner, which will be announced on October 1, and their school will be awarded the overall prize. ■■ Entries for the New Zealand Vegetarian Society Film Competition close on August 16. Entry packs can be found online at www. vegetarian.org.nz.

Howick Hornets v Glenfield Greyhounds/Mangere FlyingHawks

Times photos by Wayne Martin

THE mighty Howick Hornets Under 7 Blue team battled the Glenfield Greyhounds. After a tight first third, both teams were locked up at 2-2. But with a strong burst of tries scored by five different players, the local team pulled away to win by 12 tries to 5. Great game played in good spirits and showing great skills and enjoyed by both at Howick Domain. Howick Hornets Lil Assassins “Humble and Hard Under 8 Open team played against the Mangere FlyingHawks. The Lil Assassins won 4 tries to 3. With a total of 12 games under their belt this season, they have only lost two. There is a great team friendship amongst this group of kids. They try hard, play hard and have great respect for the game.

DANCING TO THE TOP: Cockle Bay’s Chloe Haerewa will be competing among the world’s best performers in August. Times photo Wayne Martin

World at her feet By NATALIE BRITTAN

W

ITH LONG curly locks pulled back she looks sweet and innocent, but on stage she means business. Cockle Bay dancer Chloe Haerewa will be travelling to San Diego, USA on August 2 to compete at the World Hip Hop Championships with her dancing troupe, Swagganauts, to face off performers from 50 different countries. The 11-year-old St Kentigern College student first started dancing lessons as a four-year-old at the Carter-Chan Dance Performance Centre in East Tamaki before branching into jazz and hip hop at Beat Street Studio in Howick. She continued her hip hop focus at Howick’s Red Studio after Beat Street Studio’s closure last year and also does lyrical dance at Storm Dance Studio in Howick.

The shy but confident performer says it was her Red Studio dance teachers, Gemma-Jayde Naidoo and Connor Muller, who first encouraged her to audition for Swagganauts, a junior dance crew under the renowned IDentity Co. hip hop collective which has appeared on shows such as Dancing with the Stars and New Zealand’s Got Talent. Chloe says getting to where she is has been tough but she’s not breaking under pressure. “The training’s longer, and it’s different but still fun. I get lots more opportunities and am enjoying listening to hip hop, she says. As a result, Chloe’s most recent school holidays, weekends and school nights have been blocked up with training overseen by hip hop maestro and co-founder of IDentity Co., Joshua Cesan. A serial champion, Chloe is no

stranger to hard work and has been winning trophies for solo performances since she was nine years old. Proud mum Bernadette Haerewa, who will be accompanying Chloe on her trip, says competition will be stiff but they’re just looking forward to the experience and hopefully some sightseeing. “The judges cut half the competitors at the preliminaries so some of them don’t even get to perform in front of an audience. However, young Chloe is aiming high. “There are lots and lots of good crews but I just want to do the best that we can do and get to the finals. I’d still be pretty happy that we got to go to worlds. To find out more about Chloe’s fundraising initiatives, head to www.facebook.com/Swagganauts2015

I

HAD a near death experience last week. Surprisingly, I wasn’t driving a hot rod or riding a mountain bike at the time. It was Monday morning and I was in bed. When I rolled over and asked Sharron what she was going to make me for breakfast (okay, I made that bit up) I felt a wee tickle in the back of my throat. Oh no! Don’t tell me‌ Sure enough, by lunchtime I had all the symptoms of fullblown Man Flu. Somehow I made it through the day, but the drive home felt

like the longest commute in history of the modern automobile. “Hun, I croaked, “I’ve got the bot. My throat’s so raw I can’t swallow, my head feels like it’s going to explode and my ears are blocked. My wife Sharron is an extremely compassionate person: “Good God. Take a concrete pill and harden up will ya? Contrary to what Sharron will tell you, I have a high threshold for suffering. I’ve done a 640km non-stop endurance bike ride, and ridden from Bluff to Wellington with tape over a gaping leg wound so it didn’t completely tear apart.

If that’s not enough, I once sat through an entire episode of Coronation Street. I’m as tough as nails. On day three of Man Flu I relented and went to the docs (Yeah, I know, it’s a bloke thing). He stuck a thermometer in my lughole. “Mmmm, that’s high. “Do I have a temperature? “Actually, you’ve got a fever. I was rapt! Not because I was facing a week off work and incredible suffering, but because I could go home and tell Sharron that I was indeed As Sick As A Dog, because I had a FEVER! I burst through the front

door. I didn’t care about the sheer agony of having to speak, because for the first time in my life I could tell her ‘I told you so’. “Guess what Sharron, I really do have Man‌â€? “Sssssh will ya, I’m watching Coronation Street.â€? Man Flu might be the single most fatal disease known to mankind, but it pales into insignificance when compared to a second dose of Coro. Clutching my pink covered hot water bottle, I dragged my sorry arse off to bed. – Alistair Davidson is a Times columnist

Nurturing vs Empowering THERE are two ways we grow our children. One is nurturing and the other is empowering. Nurturing is like planting a seed. You water it each day, give it lots of light, and when it is mature enough, it can be transplanted outside. Likewise, when you nurture your children, you love them, care for them and protect them from harm. Empowering means ‘to give power or authority to’, to release your children’s abilities and potential. As your children grow, you nurture less and empower more.

Imagine that from age 13, you have five years to prepare your teen to leave school and potentially to leave home and be independent. If they go away to study or join the police or armed forces, this will be your reality. In the Jewish culture, a boy has his coming of age or bar mitzvah at 13 and girls have their bat mitzvah at 12. They are considered young adults from this age and are accordingly given responsibilities and freedoms. I personally like the

omission of the word teenager from the Jewish vocabulary as ‘teenager’ tends to carry negative connotations and assumes that teens are soft, entitled and lazy While many fit this description, yours does not need to! To set up your teens and young adults for independence and success, it’s important to pass on the baton of responsibility. I found that my parenting decisions always came from hindsight. I would suddenly realise that I had been doing

things for my kids long after they could have and should have been doing it for themselves. Remember that you are moving from control to influence. Equip, empower and expect results. Your young adult will thank you for it and you can relax knowing they can take make it on their own! Yvonne Godfrey is a parenting expert who was the host of The World’s Strictest Parents and is the author of the best-seller ‘Parenting Yadults’.

Lace up and get out and about FREE guided walks in the Super City’s southern parks are being conducted twice a month until the end of the year. They are funded by southern local boards. The Out and About park ranger walks programme was launched in 2006 and covers key sites, such as Otuataua Stonefields, Clevedon Scenic Reserve, Hampton Park (East Tamaki), Mangemangeroa Valley Walkway (Somerville

Road, Howick) and Puhunui Reserve. Newer sites include Totara Park – Puhinui Stream Forest Trail, Te Ara o Whangamaire walkway (Patumahoe), Point View Reserve (Howick), Beachlands Maraetai Walkway, Platts Mills Reserve (Maraetai). Auckland Council park ranger Anna Baine says the most visually striking walk is Mangemangeroa Valley Walkway because

it combines a good variety of landscape, such as bush, farmland, Maori archaeology and beautiful views of Coromandel. The walks are suitable for all ages, she says, but a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required as some sites are quite steep and may have steps or uneven ground. All walk attendees are asked to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a bottle of water.

The walks are free, not weather dependent and are at 9.30am-12pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. More information about the 2015 Out and About Park Ranger Walks schedule is online at aucklandcouncil. govt.nz or phone 301-0101. People who would like to participate in any of the July walks should contact the council as the events will need to be organised ahead of time.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto created Mario while developing Donkey Kong in an attempt to produce a best-selling video game. Originally, Miyamoto wanted to create a video game that used the Popeye characters. At the time, however, Miyamoto was unable to acquire a license to use the characters so he ended up making Jumpman (later known as Mario). Success followed... the Super Mario Brothers series is now in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful gaming franchise of all time. It now boasts global sales of over 240 million units. Nintendo composer Koji Kondo provided the soundtrack to Super Mario Bros. The main theme, known as ‘Ground Theme’, is one of the most recognisable pieces of game music ever recorded. The tune remained in the Billboard ringtone charts for 125 weeks and has been performed in concert by live orchestras. The versions of the ghostly Boo enemies found in Super Mario 64, are based on the wife of the game’s co-designer Takashi Tezuka. Miyamoto explained: “Mr. Tezuka got an idea about putting his wife in the game. His wife is very quiet normally, but one day she exploded, maddened by all the time he spent at work. In the game, there is now a character who shrinks when Mario looks at it, but when Mario turns away, it will grow large and menacing.

ACKLING the biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colours can be difficult for schools because the talent of boys to play Joseph’s 11 brothers is sometimes hard to find. Not so for Edgewater College which is honing the singing, dancing and acting skills of a boisterous team of youths who feature in a cast of 25 in the school’s upcoming production of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber work, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Director Shaun Holmes says it can be “scary” to attempt the musical because so many boys are needed for the cast. “It’s always a struggle to find boys to come into these productions and to find boys that can sing and act,” he says. “It was quite challenging. We thought long and hard. But we knew we had a bunch of boys in the school that could sell it. And we found some more goldmines in the auditions.” One of the keys to this team of talent is its multi-cultural make-up, including young Pacific Island boys who are blessed with singing skills as part of their culture. “They are all very talented boys,” Mr Holmes says. “We are also up against the connotation that school shows can be ‘amateur and unbearable’. But in reality we are blessed with this

cast. It’s also the first time we have had singing in four parts. The musical aspect of the cast is quite fantastic.” Many members of the cast, he says, have not come from drama backgrounds. “We really have had to start from scratch. It’s been a remarkable journey seeing the final product.” To extend the experience to as many students as possible, Mr Holmes and musical director, Nicola Haddock, have cast two Josephs, Loseli Tupou and Taia Fata, and two narrators, Isabel King and Ravynah Sukumaran. The team is also benefiting from the hands-on skills of Edgewater principal, Allan Vester.

Mr Holmes says the musical is “bitsy” with a lot of scene changes and different props. “But Allan has built every part of the set as well as doing the lighting and sound on the night. We are blessed to have his skills, ability and time.” The production is supported by Edgewater’s 10-piece student band. “The musical is fun,” Mr Holmes says, “with a huge variety of styles of songs, impressive vocal singing, big dance numbers. It will be an all-round enjoyable night. It’s one of those shows that you can’t help but tap your toes, with music from calypso, country and western to disco. It covers all the styles.”

While many of the boys and girls, he says, did not come to the production with dance skills, they have a natural rhythm. “Like any show, at times it feels that it is too hard. “From experience we know what they [the students] can produce but at times they are not realising what ability they have. “So it’s about making them believe that they can do it. And they do and really shine.” ■■ Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat runs at 7pm from July 21-24, at the Edgewater College auditorium, 32 Edgewater Drive, Pakuranga. Tickets cost $10 per person.

Test drive business networking

LL business people know wordof-mouth is a great way to build business and an ideal way of developing valuable contacts is through planned networking. Numerous local entrepreneurs schedule their weekly networking team talk with like-minded business people at BNI (Business Networking International) meetings. BNI helps businesses build personal relationships with dozens of other qualified business professionals. Local chapter, BNI Eastside is showing interested businesses the advantages of working with a group of people who become an extended sales team for members. Visitors can attend a meeting from 9am to 10.30am on Wednesday, July 22 to see first-hand how the positive, supportive and structured environment develops the exchange of quality business referrals. Right now, BNI Eastside is looking for a plumber, a graphic designer, a physiotherapist, a

we will also be looking at elements of flag design - that flag designs are timeless, can work in a variety of contexts and are simple, uncluttered and have good contrast. Colour is important as fewer colours help keep the design simple and bold. Balance is important in good design, as is style and size of any symbol. Stylised objects work best and the design needs to be capable of being rendered in a variety of sizes without distortion,” said

Professor Burrows. The Panel provided a breakdown of designs by region, colour, symbols and themes. Professor Burrows noted that when reviewed against the percentage of New Zealand population, the greatest number of designs had been received from those in Hawke’s Bay. “The average percentage of designs per capita within New Zealand is 0.1 per cent, with Hawke’s Bay leading at 1.01 per cent. Others include Northland (0.35%), Nelson (0.24%), Wellington (0.17%), and Auckland (0.12%). Predominant colours are, in this order, white, blue and red. Symbols and themes include the Southern Cross, koru, fern and Maori culture. “This is a unique opportunity in our lifetimes and I encourage everyone to suggest their flag designs before midnight July 16. From there, the Panel will start the next steps in our rigorous process to determine the four alternative flag designs. We will announce a preliminary long list of approximately 50-75 flag designs by mid-August and the final four alternatives by mid-September,” said Professor Burrows. The flag design guidelines are available on www.flag.govt.nz as well as the Designers Institute of New Zealand video guide on what makes good flag design. Breakdowns of flag designs by colour, symbol and theme are available on www.flag.govt.nz. ➤➤More Feedback Page 15

AWKE’S Bay, Northland and Nelson are among leaders in national average of flag designs with few days left before July 16. The Flag Consideration Panel released last week some of the statistics behind more than 5800 design suggestions received so far. The deadline for flag designs is midnight tonight. Flag Consideration Panel chair, Professor John Burrows reiterated the principles the panel will be considering when reviewing the suggestions. “We’ll be looking for flag designs that first and foremost reflect New Zealand’s identity, as shared with us in the values and themes that New Zealanders have expressed so far throughout this process,” said Professor Burrows. The panel has published values and themes each week on www. standfor.co.nz throughout the process to guide people considering designing a flag. Professor Burrows said these have remained relatively consistent, and included history and heritage, freedom, equality, being a Kiwi, independent, culture, environment, tradition, unity and being a Pacific nation. “When reviewing flag designs

Ban these drugs

ACCORDING to Auckland Council’s “Our Auckland” publication, Auckland Council has finally agreed where the sale of psychoactive substances - known as legal highs - will be allowed under the new Local Approved Products Policy. Apparently, the council cannot ban these products entirely, as they will only be licensed by central government. Why we even need to license these insidious drugs is beyond sense to normal people, as they should all be banned in totem, because of the very negative effect they have on people, the troubles and addictions these drugs can and do lead to. Crime is well-documented with these addicts turning to crime with dealing, robbery and house-breaking to pay for their addictions to these drugs, for a start. How any responsible politician can allow this sort of drug dealing to go on is beyond me, and I will not vote for any political party that is privy to legalising these so-called “recreational drugs”. Too many people are in trouble health-wise, psychologically and thinking-wise from the use of these psychoactive drugs. When will we ever learn to ban the lot? If these psychoactive drugs were to pass a prescription-type license for general medical use, they would, or should, be banned, or by strict prescription use only, if ever allowed. Barry Southon Burswood

Fighting for our heritage

HOWICK Ratepayers and Residents Assn Inc are continuing the fight against the deletion of Heritage zoning in Howick. It is unthinkable that the council can attempt to delete Historic character zoning for Howick Village, Cockle Bay, Mellons Bay and Howick Beach traditional heritage zoned areas when Howick is the oldest town in Auckland (1847). Everyone from all RRA (Resident & Ratepayer Association) groups is welcome to come and ask the hard questions on council spending and the additional rates we are all expected to carry for transport. At our AGM on the August 1 at 11am in the Fencible Lounge next to the Howick Library, it will be a very exciting meeting as we have invited Mayor Len Brown there specifically to answer your questions and hear your concerns. Dangerous social engineering

THE news lately seems to be full of reports of little children/babies being killed. Things seem worse now than ever before. I wonder how many of these deaths are brought about by ‘live-in’ boyfriends rather than their biological parents. The law is no help. It seems to be too busy making criminals of good, caring parents who smack their children when they are naughty, so that they will not turn into law-less monsters like we seem to have no end of now. Why do we accept bad, undemocratic laws? They are dangerous social engineering which is turning us into a heartless society. ‘Inclusive’ is the in-word. Inclusive of everything which is harmful to a healthy society. Aren’t our noses being rubbed in the dirt which we now embrace? How long..? Harvey Rosieur Howick

A war of ideologies

SECULAR energies have for years been pounding the drum of antiChristian rhetoric. In the media, in academia, in our government, there are few who comprehend the history, or the power of the Gospel to save and revive lives doomed to destruction. In the process of drum-pounding, one has to wonder if they have not unwittingly accepted a situation much worse. The renowned atheist (Richard) Dawkins [Darwin’s bulldog] agreed and wrote,’…. I have mixed feelings about the decline of Christianity, insofar as it might be the bulwark against something worse’. Vacuums are always filled and the gap left when the truth is suppressed becomes filled with whoever shouts the loudest [and has the most fearfilled barbaric PR]! The Christian community does not go around flying planes into skyscrapers, blowing up underground rail stations and bus stations, beheading innocent journalists, strapping suicide vests on children, or shooting staff of a satirical magazine. There is freedom of speech, freedom to assembly, and freedom to believe. These are precious virtues built into our western way of life.

New world order

I COMPLETELY agree with Bob Wichman’s sentiments (Times, July 9) concerning the flag. Everyone I have spoken to is of the same mind. Why then is this an issue? Is it just John Key indulging his personal whim at our expense? I find it hard to believe that he could be so irresponsible or arrogant. If there is another motive (as I suspect), what could it be? A diversion? No, I think even that would be going too far. Perhaps some more skulduggery at the behest of the UN? That would be more likely. I believe many of the bad laws passed in recent years have the UN to thank for. It would help to ‘blot out’ the old alliance in the memory of younger New Zealanders and help to promote the ‘New World Order’ which is no longer a ‘conspiracy theory’ as many have been persuaded, but a fast emerging fact (as anyone can prove to themselves by simply ‘Googling’ the words.) Harvey Rosieur Howick

KiwiRail to shut down?

THE Treasury urging politicians to shut down the rail system is both commercially naive and nonsense. If, for example, the link to the Port of Tauranga was closed and there is no indication it would be as this line is profitable, but if it was, then there would be more than 2000 truck movements a day required to service the Port. The reality is that neither Treasury nor the politicians understand transport and logistics and it is the politicians who have imposed a structure on KiwiRail that is not working and it is the structure that must change first. My suggestion to both the Treasury and the politicians is to talk to the people that know about this stuff and, while they are at it, look at a realistic port strategy that feeds KiwiRail.

They need to be protected, encouraged and strengthened before we find ourselves threatened into accepting something worse. This is war we are in, a war of ideologies or beliefs, a war that demands our decisions, a war where eternal truths must not be regarded as just another option in a turbulent sea of deceptive alternatives, but pursued at all levels of educational endeavour. Ian George

WHILE the legalization of same sex marriage in Canada was controversial, that controversy was largely over the definition of marriage no longer being that of between a man and a woman. Public servants such as marriage commissioners are now obligated to perform same-sex marriages, no matter their personal or religious beliefs. The same rules don’t apply to churches, which still have the option to perform these ceremonies, and there is debate in several faiths that they should be doing so. There was also a part about parents having their children taken away from them because they objected to the sexual orientation teaching in public schools. That’s not true, nor is (it) truthful when it states that pastors can be imprisoned for refusing to perform same-sex marriage. Even a public servant wouldn’t be imprisoned for this refusal, they would simply lose their job. Public schools across the country differ in what they teach children along this line, however, if a parent disagrees with the curriculum; they have the option to remove the child from public school and home-school

the child, or put the child in a private school that doesn’t have the same teachings as the public system. That said, the reality is that the condemnation of homosexuality is no longer going to be tolerated in any environment, not only in Canada, but in most, if not all, developed countries. Again, sanctions against such behavior in Canada are more likely to be loss of one’s job, facing civil court penalties when one is sued by an offended person or group, etc, as opposed to criminal incarceration. An example was a bed and breakfast operator turning away a lesbian couple. That business owner was sued and lost the court case, just as they would have been sued should they have turned away a black couple. Standing on a street corner and shouting one’s disgust with same sex couples wouldn’t automatically have one thrown in jail, any more than shouting about minorities or religious groups. You’d likely face more sanction in the court of public opinion than by the authorities. What the laws surrounding homosexuality and same sex marriage have essentially done is place these persons in the same category as other minority groups, religious groups, etc. One cannot talk hate about any of them and if a violent act is committed, it would be classified as a hate crime and one could be charged with such in a criminal setting. • 600g lamb shoulder chops • 2 pears • 1 bag Brussels sprouts • 300g San Remo couscous • 40g Ornelle parmesan, shaved • ž cup mint leaves • 35g Pams hazelnuts • 5 Delmaine sundried tomatoes Also need: salt, pepper, olive oil

Method:

128318-v16

Heat the oven to 1800C. Season the lamb chops, place on an oven tray and roast until cooked and crispy (about 35 minutes). If you like them less crispy take them out a little sooner. When the lamb has about 15 minutes to go, thinly slice the pears and Brussels sprouts. Heat a little oil in a pan and cook the pears and Brussels sprouts on medium. Season. Turn as they cook trying not to break them up. Prepare the couscous as per the instructions on the packet. Then in a kitchen whizz or by hand ďŹ nely chop parmesan, mint, and hazelnuts, sun dried tomatoes and mix with 100ml of olive oil. Add a little bit of water if the mixture needs help to blend. When the couscous is ready, fold the mint and parmesan mixture

through it, along with the pears and Brussels sprouts. The lamb chops can be served on the couscous either whole or with the meat removed from the bone. Add a little shaved parmesan and mint leaves to garnish.

DINING OUT Warm up by the marina

Advertisement 128475A

IT MAY be winter but eastsiders don’t have to hunker down and hibernate thanks to the lively buzz down by Half Moon Bay Marina. Marina hotspots Grangers Taphouse & Kitchen and Mezza Luna are turning up the heat at both locations with a calendar-ful of events, winter warmers and tasty promotions. In fact, all throughout the winter months, locals can celebrate and unwind with hosts Cooke & Henry offering the following weekly attractions:

Taco Tuesdays Have taco tucker all day at Grangers for just $5 a piece! These Mexican bad boys are pulling in the crowds with combinations such as black pan-fried beef, refried beans and fresh salsa; tempura white fish, coriander salsa and chilli mayo; and crispy baby corn, red slaw, jalapeno and kewpie mayo. Keep to the theme by ordering the “must-have Mexican loaded fries – pulled pork, grilled feta, jalapenos, chipotle mayo and coriander. And wash it all down with a margherita or Corona – arriba!

All You Can Eat Pizza Wednesdays Grab the family, friends and colleagues for a mid-week treat at Mezza Luna from 5pm. Forget Pizza Hut, this is pizza on a whole new gourmet level with hand-spun dough baked into a crisp, thin base and topped with

fresh delights such as wild mushrooms, cream, pine nuts and truffle oil; meatball, chilli, roast pepper and cream; or garlic prawn, prosciutto and rocket. Pair each slice with a bottle of Menabrea, fresh Peroni on tap or a glass of fine New Zealand or Italian wine – bon appetito! Bookings taken.

Girls Night Out Thursdays

Hey sister, soul sister! This weekly event is one for the ladies and kicks off from 6pm till late. Hosted by Grangers and Marina Salon, this classy do is all about champagne, canapÊs, fabulous cocktails and celebrating all things female! Just launched last Thursday, this weekly highlight is set to be a sizzling sensation. Let your hair down, turn up and have fun! Alternatively, if you’re interested

in showcasing a product, service or group, give Grangers a call.

Friday and Saturday Night Live Celebrate the weekend and party the night away at Grangers with awesome tunes from live musicians. DJs will be spinning the beats on Fridays and acoustic musicians will be in the house from 8pm Saturday. Soak up the sounds, have a drink and warm up with some top nosh!

Sunday Roast And on Sunday, he roasted, oops, rested! Well, rest and roast go hand in hand as regulars know. Changing each week, the butcher’s bounty at Grangers is paired with hearty and belly-warming trimmings such as Yorkshire puds, duck fat-roasted

veges and lashings of gravy – just $20 per person. Bookings are being taken. But it doesn’t always have to be scripted either. Call throughout the week, night or day, and sample the generous hospitality of Grangers and Mezza Luna. Mezza Luna’s Italian favourites have been just the balm for the chill featuring the likes of roast duck tortellini, parsnip puree and crisp sage; risotto of the day; roast sea bass, shellfish, gnocchi and crayfish broth; and six-hour Chianti braised beef short rib on creamy polenta. Over at Grangers, the roast dry aged

OP rib (bone-in) has been wildly popular along with its accompaniments of thrice cooked chips, jus, anchovy, and truffle and duck fat butter. With Grangers open from midday till late 7 days, and Mezza Luna open from noon till late, Wednesday to Sunday (winter hours), they are your best bets for a winter hideaway spot with flowing food, drink and good times – keep an eye out on Facebook for other upcoming events and promotions. roofs, insecure doors, excessive dampness and unsafe wiring are already covered by existing regulations and the better response is for tougher enforcement. “Other issues, like window stays, glass visibility safety strips and hot water temperature are best improved by more education. The insulation retrofitting is expected to cost $600 million with benefits of $2.10 for each dollar, while the smoke alarms are expected to cost $7 million and provide benefits of $15.10 per dollar. The reforms, Dr Smith says, will require 180,000 homes to be insulated and the 120,000 homes currently without smoke alarms to have them installed. The smoke alarms are

expected to save three lives a year. However, the Property Institute of New Zealand says the Government has missed a chance to enact ‘meaningful’ changes which appear to be motivated by political concerns rather than tenant issues. The institute’s chief executive Ashley Church says if the aim was to improve tenant comfort and safety then there should have been a focus on checking things such as whether the house is damp or leaking, whether there is clean water, whether the hot water cylinder is in good condition, whether all services are properly connected and whether there are any electrical faults. “Legislation has a funny way of producing unintended consequences and the worry is that these measures will only serve to scare property investors out of the market, further compounding the property crisis in cities like Auckland. The real need, he says, is for a national programme that will provide a benchmark against which landlords can assess the standard of their property. The new package will be included in a Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill to be introduced to Parliament by October. ■■More information is online at www.mbie.govt.nz/whatwe-do/housing/changes-toresidential-tenancies-act.

years that a full rental property Warrant of Fitness actually isn’t in the best interest of tenants. It is expensive to administer and comply with and would no doubt be added to over time with the potential to take some properties out of the rental pool. Also included in the Government’s package is a new 10-day process to enable properties to be re-tenanted where a tenant abandons a property with no intention of returning. The current process can take up to six weeks, leaving a house empty and the landlord out of pocket. Housing Minister Nick Smith says the reforms will be supported by a $1.5 million information campaign aimed at improving compliance with existing and new tenancy law requirements, as well as providing guidance on the practical ways that homes can be made healthier. “This package is a more pragmatic and efficient way of improving housing standards than a housing warrant of fitness scheme, he says. “Such a scheme would cost $100 million a year, or $225 per house for inspections alone, and these costs would be passed on to tenants in rents. “This money we believe is better spent on real improvements like insulation and smoke alarms. “Significant issues like leaky

DEAS of introducing a warrant of fitness for rental housing have been thrown out because the Government thinks the issues are already covered by existing regulations. Instead the Residential Tenancies Act will be strengthened with new requirements for insulation, smoke alarms, better enforcement and faster resolution of abandoned tenancies. The new law will require retrofitting of ceiling and under floor insulation in rental homes over the next four years. It applies from July 1 next year for social housing that is heavily subsidised by the Government and from July 1, 2019 for other rental housing, including boarding houses. However, there will be exemptions, such as where it is physically impractical to retrofit insulation because of limited under floor space or inaccessible raked ceilings. Smoke alarms will also be required in all tenanted properties from July 1 next year. The New Zealand Property Investors Federation (NZPIF) says the Government’s tenancy conditions will ensure better standards for tenants without causing a reduction in rental property supply or excessive rental price increases. Andrew King, the federation’s executive officer, says the new regulations appear reasonable. “We have been saying for

ESEARCH is showing that home buyers seldom value sustainability and resilience features over things like a nicer kitchen. The information has been revealed in year one of a two-year BRANZ study looking into whether features such as solar hot water or more durable building materials add financial value to a house. It also shows there is little help for people to value these features. And, the premium paid on resale of a house may not accurately reflect the value of the sustainability features in the home. Sustainable homes have features that reduce their environmental impact, BRANZ says. Features could include windows with improved thermal performance, energy efficient lighting, or heat transfer kits. They can also include other elements such as closeness to public transport. Resilient houses, with features such as more durable building materials, perform well in disasters such as flooding or earthquakes, with lower recovery times and costs. Builders from 10 large firms were interviewed in Auckland, Christchurch and Tauranga. But they did not generally see their role as giving advice, rather delivering what clients wanted, with exceptions based on things like personal experience.

CORNER AVIEMORE DRIVE & PAKURANGA ROAD

Few clients asked about sustainability and resilience, preferring to spend on kitchens and bathrooms. Builders mostly felt that sustainability and resilience features added little extra value. Most builders acknowledged not having much technical expertise in sustainability. A survey of real estate agents and valuers concentrated on solar systems as a well-known and discrete example of a sustainability feature. Real estate agents generally believed that solar hot water and photovoltaic (PV) systems added between $2500 and $3200 to the value of a house respectively, figures below installation cost. Valuers’ average estimates were higher, at $2400-$3700 for solar hot water and $4300-$6500 for PV photovoltaic systems. Year two of the BRANZ study will calculate whole-of-life cost and benefits for sustainability and resilience features. Research will further quantify how much the market is willing to pay for these features compared with what they are worth. It will also pilot an approach to upskill builders, real estate agents and valuers on the net benefits of these features. ■■The BRANZ Study Report, ‘Valuing sustainability and resilience features in housing’ is found online at www.branz.co.nz.

Low listings boosting prices By MARIANNE KELLY

R

ESIDENTIAL house prices are continuing to rise in Auckland and the inventory situation is extremely tight with less than 10 weeks of stock available, according to Colleen Milne, Real Estate Institute of New Zealand chief executive. Sales volumes in the Auckland region rose by 21 per cent in June compared with the same time last year, she says. The median price was also up 26 per cent on the same time last year. Eastern Beaches continue to follow the trend with the dwelling median price up 27 per cent to $922,500 in June compared with $725,500 the same time last year. Numbers of dwellings sold are up 11 per cent to 186 from 168 last June. The local market is also more competitive with the median days to sell dropping to 30 in June, down 15 per cent on 35 the same time last year. Ms Milne says the Auckland region continues to experience low listing numbers and strong demand across the spectrum. “Although some vendors are leaving Auckland, there are as many new buyers emerging, leaving the overall supply/demand situation more or less static.” Data is showing that city sales in the ‘affordable’ price brackets are much quicker than the regional median of 29 days to sell. “A reduction in the number of offshore buyers because of the requirements to have a New Zealand bank account and an IRD number may be having some impact at the top end of the market,” she says. “But for most of the market the trends evident over the past 12 months show no signs of abating.” There is increasing evidence that

Aucklanders are looking out of the region for properties, as owner-occupiers and for investment properties, Ms Milne says. Regions, such as Northland and Waikato/Bay of Plenty, have recorded significant drops in the volume of properties for sale over the past six months, with Aucklanders increasingly being identified as a significant buying group. “Further afield, there is increasing evidence that Aucklanders are making up a larger portion of total buyers.” As many as 60 per cent of people attending open homes in Tauranga are reported to be Aucklanders, while about 15 per cent in the Hamilton market are now from Auckland, says QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush. June, she says, has seen a continuation of the strengthening mar-

ket conditions across the Auckland region that have been experienced since late last year, with values up 5.5 per cent over the past three months, and 17 per cent year-on-year. QV homevalue Auckland registered valuer, James Wilson says although market level activity levels remain buoyant, there is a severe shortage of properties listed for sale, increasing competition among buyers which is further adding to upward pressure on values. “High levels of speculation are evident across all segments of the market, as well as increasing evidence of land-banking of properties which may offer the potential to sub-divide under the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan.” While the Auckland property market experienced its busiest June in 11 years, the rate at which the average price is rising slowed considerably

in the month, says Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson. “Auctions remain extremely popular and during the month about three out of every four homes put up for auction sold under the hammer.” The average sale price at $826,474 hit an all-time high, he says. “But what was noticeable was a definite slow-down in the rate of increase. Over the previous three months, prices increased on average by 3.2 per cent a month. The June year-on-year increase is now 15.7 per cent. This is considerably lower than was being experienced in the first five months of the year.” According to property listing website, Realestate.co.nz, the property market has sparked a surge in mobile app use. While the total number of the website’s mobile app users has grown at a much faster rate than

other platforms in the last 12 months, the average mobile app user visits the property portal more often than they did the same time last year. The website’s chief executive, Brendon Skipper says while the number who use the website on any platform – desktop, mobile or tablet – has shown strong growth of 33 per cent compared with the same time last year, mobile app users have increased by an even greater 44 per cent. “More significantly,” he says, “mobile app users now use the website app even more frequently than they did before. Today the average smartphone user visits the app 16 per cent more often than they did in June 2014. Clearly, serious home buyers have realised that there is competitive advantage to be gained by inspecting online listings as frequently as possible.”

I am not writing this to replace what your personal Veterinary Surgeon or Veterinary Clinic suggests, its is more about public awareness to what you may need to discuss with your Vet Surgeon on your cats next annual check up visit. Some Veterinary Practises are staying the the YEARLY VACCINATIONS and some Veterinary Practises are changing to possibly a 3 yearly vaccination. The Welfare of your cat is paramount and I believe along with your Vet Surgeon would recommend still having a YEARLY WELLNESS CHECK in between the 3 yearly vaccinations. This will help to keep your lovely cat in great condition and also regular checkups with your Vet Surgeon, can keep an eye on your cat and give you advice and suggestions. USING A CATTERY - If you are using a Cattery then we still require to see some form of documentation that your cat has had a WELLNESS CHECKUP. You might like to discuss this when you next visit your Vet Surgeon or Practise. As ALL Cattery owners we are responsible for looking after your cat and giving them a lovely holiday and would like all our cats who come in, be in good health and see weight etc, has been recorded.

COMMUNITY ADVISORY – Thinking about your bucket list W

HAT’S filling your bucket? Probably not the question players attending this week’s NZ Rugby League National Performance Camp were expecting to answer, but there was good reason to ponder. “Over the last two years, six young NRL players, not much older than you guys, have taken their lives, explains NZRL wellbeing & education Joe Harawira. “That’s six too many. “All of the boys who have relocated to Australia with NRL clubs say it’s harder than even they imagined. That creates stress and it’s tough, because

unlike a physical injury, you can’t see it or touch it to know that it’s there. The Le Va organisation specialises in mental health, especially among Pacific Islanders, and works with New Zealand Rugby League to help players understand the challenges facing them in their career paths. Counsellor Renee Haiu used the bucket analogy to help the boys think about aspects of their lives that cause anxiety. “Often, before you even start living your lives each day, you start with stuff you can’t control, she said. “There are things that stress us out

and most of the time we can cope. We might get an injury, but we work through it and get back in the game. “But sometimes the pressure gets too much and we can’t cope. Renee asked players to think about things that affected their mental wellbeing. The list was long and included things like rejection, pressure to perform, injuries, rumours, relationships, homework, temptation and peer pressure. When these things build up, the bucket begins to overflow with disastrous consequences. “How many of you think you’re

OK, but suddenly you just explode or even break down and cry? asked Renee. “That’s the pressure. If it gets bad enough, it can lead to thoughts of suicide and often people can’t see this. Some people don’t feel comfortable talking about it and others don’t see them having a hard time. There are some strategies and, again, Renee invited players to come up with the things they did to help relieve stress or empty the bucket. They included: ■■Praying ■■Going for a run or walk

■■Writing their worries down ■■Talking to a parent, family member or friend ■■Having a cry ■■Singing a song “It’s really important that you remember to do positive things to relieve the pressure, she said. One last piece of advice — identify someone you trust enough to talk through your problems with. Le Va did not just talk to the national squad players, but also their coaches and managers, alerting to the tell-tale signs that one of their players may be struggling.

the HPNC executive committee to donate the past uniform to worthy causes. Snuggly fleecies were given locally to Pakuranga Women’s Refuge and also sent to Nepal to aid families who lost everything in the April Gorkha earthquake. “Airlines have allowed passengers travelling to Nepal 30kg of extra baggage so travel companies such as Eco Travels are organising this to happen, she says. Donations can still be made through the Red Cross www.redcross.org.nz.

Almighty Johnson just getting better H

AVING moved to fourth on the NRL table, the Warriors are looking like genuine premier contenders thanks to a recently found steely attitude and Shaun Johnson’s brilliance. For that, much credit must go to coach Andrew McFadden who has them functioning as a TEAM and believes next year Johnson could become an even better ďŹ rst ďŹ ve than he is a halfback. I concur, even though Johnson’s overall game as a No 7 has developed nicely this season behind a workaholic pack of forwards who don’t shirk the hard yards or making their tackles. Having overcome a slow start to the season when Chad Townsend was the key pivot, Johnson’s form as both a tactician and an attacking gen-

ius has surpassed that of former Kiwi greats Stacey Jones, Kenny Stirling, Gary Freeman and Clayton Friend. Given more space at No 6 outside an experienced halfback like Thomas Leuluai, the magical Johnson should create even greater havoc than he is now. Meanwhile his combination with Townsend and the return from injury of fullback Sam Tomkins has ignited a backline whose passing and running has sharpened appreciatively. Bodene Thompson and Ryan Hoffman have joined Simon Mannering in adding spine to a pack which has an impressive front row in Ben Matulino and Jacob Lillyman. When you add big young props like Albert Vete, Sam Lisone and Charlie Gubb and second rower Raymond Faitala-Mariner it’s a pack that

Agnew’s Angle doesn’t lack depth and one which augers well for the future. Last Sunday’s 28-14 win against the Melbourne Storm despite the absence of the injured Hoffman, Konrad Hurrell and Manu Vatuvei demonstrated the new found grit and self-belief the side has developed since it was walloped by the South Sydney Rabittohs. Faitala-Mariner added power and pace to the pack and Hurrell’s centre replacement David Fusitu’a scored a brilliant corner try to cap a strong allround performance. With Solomone Kata adding punch

to the centres and Johnathan Wright performing solidly on the wing, every man is doing his job nicely. Just how important little hooker Nathan Friend is to the team was evident in the third quarter when the Storm staged their comeback against a side that sorely missed his direction and energy. When he returned, chased and caught a kick before somersaulting over Jesse Bromwich’s back and passed between his legs, the Warriors regained their composure. That incredible feat led to a second Tui Lolohea try which made the game safe, stopped the Storm’s momentum and gave 19,000 loyal fans plenty to cheer about. With the exciting Isaac Luke and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck signed to join the Warriors next year, the future

looks bright. Meanwhile the contribution of Friend and Tomkins remains immense before their departure back to Australia and England respectively at season’s end. Meanwhile as one who has a huge respect for All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, I was surprised to read his comment about Lima Sopoaga still having a lot of learning to do. He had an outstanding Super 12 in contributing to the Highlander’s winning of the Super Rugby crown and outplayed the Waratahs Bernard Foley and the Hurricanes Beauden Barrett in the semi-ďŹ nal and ďŹ nal respectively. Although the All Blacks can thanks Dan Carter’s boot for staving off Samoa’s brave challenge in Apia, he is still a long way short of his brilliant best.

Pakuranga rep rugby sides clean up on Australian tour TWO junior representative squads from Pakuranga United Rugby Club have returned from their Australian tour having recorded huge wins. The PURC under 10 & under 11 sides each chalked up comprehensive wins against Beecroft Cherrybrook – both teams won 73-0. The Under 10 team won all three of their matches and didn’t have a try scored against them. Abby Lockhart is the ďŹ rst girl to make the team - and she scored a try. For more than 30 years, the PURC and the Beecroft Cherrybrook Junior Rugby Union based in Sydney have been nurturing junior rugby by providing an opportunity to play against each

Tough guys take top prize

Sports bites Pair hold on to 49er title PETER Burling and Blair Tuke conquered a come-back challenge on the final day of the 2015 49er European Championship Regatta to successfully defend their title and further extend their remarkable string of victories in the class. A protest late on the penultimate day, surrounding a mark rounding incident, saw New Zealand’s Burling and Tuke take a disqualification and relinquish the overall lead relegated to third place. The Australian crew of Nathan Outteridge and Ian Jensen, who lodged the successful protest, were leading and five points ahead of the Kiwis, however the final day offered plenty of opportunity for redemption with three finals races and a medal race in the schedule. Racing off the coast of Porto on the large Atlantic swells, Burling and Tuke let their sailing speak for itself and started the day with a second place to set the tone. Next they won a race, and went on to deliver another second place in the third.

Great medals tally The full complement of medals were won by New Zealand athletes at the FISU World University Games, Summer Universiade, Gwangji in Korea. Angie Petty won gold in the 800m, Eliza McCartney silver in the pole vault, Camille Buscomb silver in the 5000m and Julia Ratcliffe bronze in the hammer throw. Petty not only scored the top medal but also went under two minutes for the first time with a gutsy performance coming from behind over the final 25 metres to pass Jamaican Kadine Simoya who had set a solid pace from the start scorching through the first lap in 56.41. Petty recorded 1:59.06, just 0.41s outside Toni Hodgkinson’s New Zealand national record set at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

AKURANGA College physical education (PE) teachers Kirsty Leggett and Graeme Brent made a pact to ‘take out’ their peers from across the region in a “tough challenge. Ms Leggett rose to the occasion, winning the female teacher award in the Tough Guy/Gal Auckland Secondary Schools Competition. The 25-year-old Health and PE teacher, who leaves for London next month on her OE, joined Pakuranga’s 34 students on the six kilometre run. The event, at Woodhill Sands Equestrian Centre, is held annually to give students the opportunity to work towards an achievement standard credit as part of the outdoor education course. Ms Leggett and Mr Brent decided to join other teachers who opted to run with their students. “Graeme and I set up a challenge to ourselves to win, Ms Leggett says. “He said ‘let’s take it out’. It kind of was a goal, but I didn’t think it would happen. I won an awesome prize, a watch, which was completely unexpected. The course takes the runners through rivers and mud, confronts them with obstacles to run through and climb over. The aim for the students is to run the

course under 35 minutes for an ‘excellence’ grade. Ms Leggett completed it in 36 minutes. “A lot of the [Pakuranga] boys did well, she says. “The students did us proud, although I think for the girls it was more

about having fun getting stuck in the mud. She says she did no special training for the event. “I just ran it. Because I was leaving the school, my class had been taken over by another

teacher. But the organisers like the extra help with the event. “The students had a six-week build-up. But because I was not teaching the class, I did my own fitness and gym work. While she didn’t find the prospect of the run daunting, she says she was a bit worried about the cold. “I was pretty excited because I had not done it before and I didn’t know what to expect, especially the obstacles and the mud. The experience, she says, was especially good for the students who usually do not get an opportunity to enter this type of event. “It was tough, especially when we were all ready to run and then found ourselves waist deep in mud. “Once we were out of it we were OK. It was a cool atmosphere. The students were enjoying themselves. They were competitive but also having fun, a great environment. And, yes, she says, it would be “cool to do the event again and she’s thinking about training for a similar event in the future. “I will miss the Pakuranga PE department, and the students are awesome as well. It was her first school posting on graduating from Teachers College and, she says, “I knew it was an awesome school.
