History
Browns Island Motukorea was sold by Ngati Tamatera in 1840 to settlers, John Logan Campbell and William Brown. Since then the island has had a succession of owners, culminating in the purchase in 1955 by former mayor and brewing magnate Sir Ernest Davis. Davis gifted the island to the Mayor, Councillors and people of Auckland in 1955. Since 1955, the island has been managed for the city variously by the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Board and the Department of Conservation, but from 2 February 2018, Auckland Council will resume management. A group of volunteers is being formed to assist in ecological restoration of the island. The Friends of Regional Parks (FOR Parks) advocates for the provision of Regional Parks in the Auckland Region with support from groups including Forest and Bird and Federated Mountain Clubs. ogy of the centrally located island, ravaged by a recent scrub and grass fire. Browns Island Regional Park is a significant step by Auckland
Council in expanding the provision of Regional Parks to accommodate the city’s rapid population growth. Research affirms this need,
showing that 75 per cent of Aucklanders’ recreation is informal such as biking, walking and enjoying beaches, with only 25 per cent involved in organised sport. FOR Parks believes council must realign its park planning and spending to accommodate recreation preferences of the majority of Aucklanders, including greater spending on Regional Parks. In the face of intensive housing development, FOR Parks calls for urgent action by Auckland Council to fund acquisition and development of new Regional Parks both to the north and south of Auckland. Among the opportunities are Crater Hill, the Okura Estuary and properties along the route of the Te Araroa walking trail. Principles to guide Auckland’s park development and a 50 year strategy were presented to council by FOR Parks in 2016.

And the news is being welcome by Auckland’s Friends of Regional Parks (FOR Parks), says President Bronwen Turner. “Browns Island Regional Park adds to the region’s chain of priceless Regional Parks along the coast and in the Hauraki Gulf,” she said. “We applaud the energy and persistence of Auckland Council to guarantee public access and enjoyment of this remarkable asset into the future.” The new Regional Park opens up a myriad of recreational opportunities for nature and heritage lovers, the boating fraternity, day walkers and campers. n aspiring teacher is on a mission to lift the stigma around leprosy. Melody Yong, a youth advocate for Leprosy Mission New Zealand, says a recent trip to Nepal to learn about Leprosy and help those affected has changed her life. “This trip has opened my eyes to a disease that affects so many people, and it has heartbreaking consequences for those suffering from it,” says the Pakuranga resident. “Leprosy sufferers are often cast out of their families and communities and most doctors are scared of treating leprosy affected patients. Yet here in New Zealand, many people don’t even know that leprosy still exists.” Yong admits that she too was ignorant about the disease before her advocacy mission, but hopes to change the perception of leprosy in New Zealand and around the world. “When I first heard about leprosy, I thought it was some ancient, biblical disease that was long gone.” The University of Auckland student says she has since learnt that someone is newly diagnosed with leprosy every few minutes and millions around the world

are suffering from it. “I want to inform people that leprosy has a cure, and people don’t have to suffer forever.” Although treatment is now fully funded by the World Health Organisation, Yong says communities affected by Leprosy still believe it to be a curse cast upon you for a wrongdoing. This age-old stigma forces leprosy sufferers to hide their symptoms from fear of being shunned and they often receive treatment too late. Alongside eight other advocates for Leprosy Mission New Zealand, Yong volunteered in Anandaban hospital, which specialises in the treatment of leprosy
affected patients, with the aim to break down stigma and empower people affected by leprosy to stand up for their rights. “We went on ward rounds with doctors, meeting the patients and listening to their stories, many of which are heartbreaking. “I met this old lady who had lost many of her fingers to leprosy, but she could still knit. And I’d watch her knit, and even though there was a massive language barrier, she taught me how to knit. It’s wonderful how little you need to connect with someone,” she says. Yong observed surgeries that helped restore movement in the hands of leprosy sufferers whose have suffered severe nerve damage, and watched leprosy sufferers undergo rehabilitation to prepare them for re-entering the community. She says one of her most important roles was venturing out to isolated communities in Kathmandu and talking to the villagers about leprosy. The Leprosy Mission New Zealand advocates are still in the process of raising $30,000 for a digital X-ray machine to improve the medical facilities at Anandaban Hospital. History re-enactments at Monterey History will repeat itself at Monterey Cinemas this week – in the form of re-enactments at least. From July 20 to July 26, the Historical Re-enactment Society will be making appearances around the film Dunkirk. The group will be on site at various times with their different items
such as replica, helmets, armoury and uniforms. There will also be a display set up in between two of the cinemas with the opportunity to discuss and learn about their re-enactment. On July 20 they will be there for both the 6.30pm and 8.10pm screening, while on July 25 there will be a special screening where
a special representative from the Historical Re-enactment society will make a presentation for half an hour before the film. The movie follows the story of allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France who are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in WWI.

eputy Prime Minster Paula Bennett has a good number of portfolios to contend with. Yet with just three hours of sleep after travelling the length and breadth of the country campaigning for five days straight, Mrs Bennett is brighteyed and bushy-tailed. She has something clever to say to everyone in the packed-to-the-capacity SuperBlues meeting hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross at the Howick Bowling Club on Friday morning. “It’s quite funny when people think they know me because maybe they have seen me on television,” she says. She narrates an anecdote of the time she was holidaying at a beach up north with her husband and grandchild. “I had no make-up on and was in shorts, collecting shells when an elderly gentleman walks up to me and says: ‘By crikey you look like my girlfriend Paula Bennett. I have a big crush on her’. “My husband responded saying: ‘I do too’. “After a while he had a closer look at me and says: ‘By crikey are you Paula Bennett’? “To which his wife promptly brushes him off saying: “Of course not darling, she is a lot younger than Paula!” The Minister for State Services, Women, Tourism, Police and Climate Change admits that she “lives in Auckland but sleeps in Wellington”. She had everyone’s attention as the room filled with laughter. “We had a bloke last year who said `let’s make America great again’. But this country is already great! How lucky are we!” Reflecting on her working relationship with Prime Minister Bill English

when she took over as Deputy PM seven months ago, she says there has been a big change. “We don’t argue anymore. Earlier we used to argue about policy but we don’t fight anymore. “I told him, there are two people in an argument. One of them was right and one of them was you,” she laughs. “Ladies, feel free to use that line on your partners, anytime.” About Mr English she says: “He’s just got this amazing big brain that can tackle really complex issues and cut it down into caring about an individual community, like how the policy can affect a woman in South Auckland.” Talking about 10,000 more jobs created every month that equates to 66

new jobs every hour; and NCEA Level 2 results success moving up from 68 per cent to 83 percent with the aim to push it up to 90 per cent, she says she is “confidently paranoid about the elections”. Later in the day as she speaks to the Times while “hanging out” at the Botany Town Centre, chatting with shop owners and even trying on a pair of shoes, the minister with one portfolio for every day of the week says she gets her energy from people. “New Zealand is so remarkable. It gives people second chances. “How else can someone like me who was a single mother at 17, dream of being the Deputy Prime Minister of the country? “Isn’t that absolutely fabulous?”
Starbucks could be returning to the east. The coffee chain, owned by NZ stock exchange listed company Restaurant Brands, shut the popular Botany store last Monday, much to the dismay of many fans. The Times’ online news story – posted on the paper’s Facebook page - reached more than 32,300 people – a record for a Times’ online news story, and recorded 149 likes and 21 shares. A sign posted in the shop’s window last week read: “All good things must come to an end…and so it is for our Botany Town Centre store. We would like to thank all of our customers for their loyalty and for being part of the journey with us. We hope you will enjoy the Starbucks Experience in our other Auckland stores, the closest located at Sylvia Park.” Meanwhile Restaurant Brands responded to the times’ request for comment but would not elaborate on precisely why the store was closed. “We are deeply saddened by this closure too. We are closing due to external factors. With the mall refurbishing we were unable to hold on to the store,” the company said. “We are looking for another great location within east Auckland, however these things do take time.” Botany Town Centre told the Times last week it was limited as to what it could share. “Twelve months or so ago we renewed some leases on shorter terms than usual anticipating possible development. Starbucks was one of these,” town centre management said. “In line with (shopping centre owner) AMP’s long-term master plan for Botany Town Centre, we are committed to maintaining a high-quality trading environment for the benefit of both retailers and customers. “As part of this programme, the centre is commencing civil works in the car park outside the Conservatory entrance.” Management confirmed there are likely to be some relocations pending development. The civil works started this week and are expected to be completed mid-September. “Starbucks has been a part of our community for a very long time, a loyal and popular retailer and we will miss their presence in the centre,” management said.

James Donovan Solicitor
It took the very first page of a well-worn Bible to remind James Donovan of the year he set up his legal practice in Howick — 1969. The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan has seen many a Howick resident pass through its doors, as with any rite of passage. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving the difficulties they may have with property, family and business affairs, and know how they should best protect their assets for their

children and for their future.” The extremely competent team at this Howick institution also offers all-encompassing law services including trusts, wills, estates, matrimonial property, and residential and commercial conveyancing. Many know to come to this wellestablished solicitor for traffic offences also. Local businesses recognise this long-
standing legal practice as somewhere they can look to for reliable advice when complications arise from business activities such as taxation, trusts and leasing premises. There is virtually nothing these excellent legal experts cannot do or resolve; as James says: “There is no substitute for experience.” Barrister and Solicitor, Michelle Donovan has joined the practice with many years experience in Public Law. Registered Legal Executives Leonie Hogg and Michelle Bailey have more than 20 years experience each in the legal arena also. Together with the stellar support from first point of call and Legal Assistant Janine Clarke, and Accounts expertise from Grace Wang, the legal practice is well known for its invaluable advice and services to the community. All staff members live locally and James Gavin Donovan has captured the essence of a Howick business, thus receiving referrals that have lasted for generations. Top honours for bookkeeping work
17th - 23rd July 2017
T
wo local companies have whipped up winning formulas for sorting out admin and bookkeeping work and their expertise has been recognised by their professional peers. Jo Mankelow from Mankelow Accounts at Highland Park took top honours, announced as bookkeeper of the year at the New Zealand Bookkeeper Association awards. Only two years ago, Jo was awarded the emerging bookkeeper’s award when she launched her own business, and her hard work to develop her business has led to dramatic growth. Since 2014, Mrs Mankelow has grown her company from a one-person enterprise to a bustling business providing employment for six women. “The last few years have been very busy and it is quite overwhelming to be recognised as a professional leader,” says Mrs Mankelow. While striving to generate and then keep up with phenomenal growth Mrs Mankelow discovered she was pregnant and then her baby son arrived early. Clients presented seemingly impossible deadlines and she just kept meeting their targets.

Howick’s very own hip-hop crew, Rebellious are taking the dancing world by storm as they prep to perform on the world stage in Phoenix, Arizona this August. The Crew, who will be representing New Zealand at the Hip Hop International World Championships, say they couldn’t be more excited to compete against the world’s best dancers. “This has been our goal since we started this crew, and it’s so exciting to be able to say we got here. I’m most excited to go there and just try our best and see if we can get a place in the finals,” says crew leader, Gemma Whitford-Joynt. Rebellious, who have only been together since February last year, still have to get through the preliminary judging in Phoenix before they are selected to compete
in the finals. “My wish for them is that they make it to finals. But this is a tough competition and judges come from all over the world and they all like what they like. The challenge is trying to convince them that even if they don’t like the styles that you’re dancing, you’re doing it so well that they can’t deny you deserve a spot in the finals,” says red Studio director, Kiri WhitfordJoynt. “It’s tricky when you’re little to be brave enough and daring enough to do this. But the crew should feel proud no matter what happens because it’s really a privilege to be going at all. Here in New Zealand, where I believe we have the best dancers in the world, there is so much competition to qualify for world champs.” Helping the crew to achieve their dancing

‘People with hearing loss are no different’ By Farida Master happy: Barrie Hung, chair of the Pakuranga Chinese Association with Rosa Chow and Yongjie Li.

Celebrating 15 years with community The huge turnout on Friday evening at the Imperial Palace Restaurant was an indication of how well connected the Pakuranga Chinese Association is with the local community. Around 600 people turned up to celebrate 15th anniversary of the Pakuranga Chinese Association that meets three times a week at the Pakuranga Leisure Centre and at Te Tuhi. The grand event hosted by the founding chairperson Barry Hung had the movers and shakers of the Chinese community turn up in full regalia. Also spotted were Howick Local Board members David Collings and Peter Young; Botany Labour candidate Tofik Mamedov; Pakuranga and Botany Maori Party candidates Carrie Stoddart-Smith and Wetex Kang; community workers Rosa Chow and Jacke Hui; and beauty queens with their crowns firmly on their heads —Michelle Isemonger, Miss International New Zealand and Annie EvansMiss World New Zealand. The evening was packed with a range of cultural performances, showcasing local Chinese talent. Mr Hung spoke about the contribution that the association has made to the community as well as the activities they host for the migrant Chinese community to make them feel at home.

he first time Joshua McKenzie heard the birds sing, he was confused. He wasn’t sure what it was - only to see tears well up in his mother’s eyes. “It was quite an emotional time for me,” says Joshua’s mum, Michelle Shepherd. “I thought he always knew what bird song was like till I saw that quizzical look on his face.” At the age of six, the Farm Cove Intermediate student was diagnosed with 60 per cent hearing loss in one ear and 40 per cent loss in the other. “He used to struggle with learning but unfortunately the hearing tests we did earlier didn’t pick up on anything,” she says. Michelle says Joshua wasn’t engaged in school as he found it difficult to pick up things and missed out on social cues. “He would miss out on the tone of the voice when he was little. “He couldn’t recognise if someone was being annoyed with him. Often it is the tone you use that gives an indication of what

you mean.” While the hearing aids make a huge difference, there are still times when Joshua can mishear things if there are other conversations happening simultaneously, says Michelle. “People make a mistake thinking just because he has hearing aids he can hear everything. But what
they don’t realise is that there can be a lot of interruptions. “It’s important that people be more patient with those with a hearing loss and spend more time with them. “There needs to be clarity. You need to confirm that they have heard it right,” she says speaking out of experience. Michelle strongly recommends that people with a hearing impairment should wear hearing aids even though I realise the cost is quite high. “Fortunately it is funded, there are government subsidies available for under18 and there are cheaper options available too,” she says. “However once they leave school there are less subsidies which can be difficult for people who are not working.” Thirteen-year-old Joshua says his advice to other children with a hearing problem is, “If you can’t hear, use your other senses. Also, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat themselves if you haven’t heard properly.” He says he is thrilled that the National Founda-
tion for the Deaf is creating awareness by hosting the Silent Leadership Challenge which he hopes his class will participate in. “It will be great if my class does the muffled challenge with hearing protectors and can experience what it feels like. “Though I don’t think my teacher will like it with a roomful of me,” he says. To enable him to hear better in the classroom, Joshua uses the Frequency Modular System with a Roger Pen. It allows the teacher to speak into the pen, a wireless microphone that transmits the sound straight into Joshua’s hearing aid—bypassing noise and distance. He also thinks that learning martial arts from the age of six has been a big positive. “Being a Brown Belt has heightened my state of awareness. With martial arts I don’t have to worry about hearing. I know I am safe and have something to protect me.” A special message he has for the Times readers is: “I want people to remember that we are not different. We are just like them.”

Your invitation to trial this new advanced technology at our Open Day Shopping centres, restaurants, meetings, and family get-togethers — these situations can all be hard to navigate when you have hearing loss. But they don’t have to be anymore. We call it a complex listening environment. You call it “socialising”. Finally there’s a hearing device that lets you hear what you want to hear, even in the most complex listening environments. It allows you to participate in multiple conversations, not just the one in front of you. Just like you used to. We’d like to tell you more about it.
Join us at one of our Open Days on Monday 6 or Tuesday 7 March and we’ll show you a new hearing aid that can make all of this easier. Ringing, buzzing, hissing or roaring, that annoying sensation in your head can take many forms. Tinnitus is surprisingly common - and although it can’t be cured, you can take control of it to significantly minimise its impact. Focus Hearing can help you manage your tinnitus through a combination of education, counselling, sound therapy and new technology. The latest ground breaking technology combines a successful tinnitus support solution with a next generation hearing device, so you can now ease the symptoms of tinnitus by playing relief sounds directly through your hearing aids. You can discreetly adjust the sounds using an app on your iPhone or Android, to get the relief you need, whenever you need it. You can also wirelessly stream additional tinnitus relief options, like your favourite music, audio books, podcasts, or even relaxation guides. rt brings communities together. Nothing illustrates it more than people from ages five to 70 adding colour to a giant pop-up mural of the cityscape at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre on Thursday morning. The 10-metre mural created by one of New Zealand’s most recognised contemporary artist, Hayley King aka Flox during the school holidays (till July 23) at the shopping centre is to connect people through creativity. “A project like this brings people from different walks of life together says,” says Hayley who works with prints, publications, murals, graphic design, stationary and has also illustrated a very popular children’s story book Tu Meke Tui as well designed an adult colouring book. The mural that features the theme ‘Love my City Auckland’ includes the city skyline with her trademark birds, flora and fauna beautifully integrated with the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Sky Tower, Auckland Museum, Clock Tower and more. “It is great to see people so engaged,” says the aerosol and stencil artist with a degree in fine art and business studies. “Besides, who wants to be

out on weather like this,” she laughs. Hayley is no stranger to making a splash in the community with larger-than-life artworks. Last year, she collaborated with another New Zealand artist, a jewellery designer and a photographer, to work on the Painted Peacock Project which involved travelling to Udaipur in India, and hosting art-based workshops for a local primary school. “We also painted a large street mural for the community on a wall near Lake Pichola,” she says about her trip to India. “The Painted Peacock Project was about our artistic
growth and more importantly sharing our skill and knowledge with the local community. “The final objective of the trip was to showcase the documentation and artwork that came out of the project in the form of an exhibition in New Zealand.” Part of the proceeds they raised went towards providing the Indian school children with new shoes and art supplies. They also raised money for KidsCan Charitable Trust in New Zealand. Prior to that in 2015, Hayley did a three- month artist residency in Taiwan, where again she created an outdoor mural and painted it live.

aturday marked the beginning of a gruelling 40 hour bike ride for three young cyclists, all in a bid to help the hungry. Macleans College students Wilhelm Muller, Matthew Wilson and Waldo Singleton have put a unique spin on World Vision: 40 Hour Famine by cycling from Auckland to Rotorua, covering a distance of 400km in 40 hours. “Staying on the bike will be the hardest part,” Singleton said in preparation for the big ride. “Crossing the Coromandel through the mountains and over hills will be tough. We think the third day is going to be our hardest because we will have two days behind us but still one more day to go. So we are so close yet so far away.” This is the longest bike ride the 15-year-old cyclists have ever completed and has been spread out over four days with a support car following to ensure their safety and to carry supplies. The idea came about when the three decided to take part in the 40 Hour Famine, which they say is something they had always talked about doing but never got around to. “Everyone says they’re going to do something and they never end up doing it, us included. This time we decided not to find excuses and just get up and start doing what we said we were going to do,” says Muller. The team have focussed on visiting bike shops in towns they come across to share their mission and encourage those they meet to contribute to the plight of hungry children around the world. Updates such as photos and GoPro footage are being

posted on the teams’ fundraiser Facebook page, We Ride For Them. The group say their most important goal is to raise awareness about the devastating impact of food inequality. “More so than raising money, raising awareness is definitely our priority,” Singleton says. “We live in a day and age where we go through life with struggle. If we don’t help each other we won’t get anywhere. It’s all about helping, putting our hand up, and doing something for each other and for those who need our help.” Wilson says they want to show their peers that anybody can help. “If a group of 15-yearold school kids can pull this together to help others, then everybody can do something to help those in need, no matter how small. You always have the power to make a difference.” Since starting their cam-
paign the boys have raised $900, most of which was donated during their ride to Rotorua. They received sponsorship from Avanti Plus Botany who supplied them with a full cycling kit and serviced their bikes in preparation for the big ride. Also on board is Pure Nutrition which has supplied the team with water bottles and electrolyte drinks to keep them hydrated. The three are planning to continue their campaign when they return from Rotorua. “We are going to speak in an assembly after the ride, and ensure that our school is aware of the issue of world hunger. Our World Vision page will still be open for donations so hopefully we can encourage some more students to donate,” says Singleton. To donate visit mycause. worldvision.org.

The winner of the 11th Estuary Art and Ecology People’s Choice Award has been presented to audience favourite, Arielle Walker. Walker’s entry, ‘Colour Alchemy - Map of the Tamaki Estuary’ was an innovative response to the theme, using dyes extracted from various plants found in the estuary to naturally colour bundles of wool which was knitted together to create a ‘map’ of the estuary. Alongside the artwork, Walker included a handbook, detailing with drawings and notes the diverse range of flora incorporated in the work, which she refers to as the ‘key’ to the map. The artist won $1000, donated by the Rice Family Partnership.

he Rotary Annual Mid Winter Plunge event was organised for the community by the Rotary Club of Pohutukawa Coast in aid of the Maraetai Coastguard. “We were lucky with fabulous weather and everyone there seemed to enjoy themselves, it certainly was a great community event,” said Pohutukawa Coast Rotary president Alex Garden. The mid winter plunge consists of a swim out to a buoy, a plunge where entrants go around the local coastguard boat and a best costume competition. The winner of the swim was Tom Stacey. The best costume judged by Franklin Local Board member Malcolm Bell, was ‘Superman’.

Now that Al Gore has been exposed as a fraud and is being sued with regard to climate change and global warming, does that mean the Nobel Prize given to him will be returned and awarded to the person that really deserved it? What about the carbon tax scam? Will the tax be returned to the payees? Also the Oscar he got for the documentary on global warming (An Inconvenient Truth) be returned? The truth is highlighted on Google’s site where Al Gore admitted he was wrong about global warming. It took the world 10 years to wake up to the conman! Margaret Scott Pakuranga
What’s going on?
Where to next? Three men in Colombia plan to marry. Each other! They consider themselves to constitute a family and legal partners. Wheels are in motion to change the law. Couldn’t you see it coming? Their upcoming wedding will be the first legalised ceremony of its kind in the country and possibly the world. It seems that the LGBT is the tail wagging the dog – globally - changing the laws and the times as it suits them, using the name of ‘inclusiveness’ (which means anything goes). If everyone tried to do the same we would have total anarchy, just as we have it in part now. No consideration is given to the harms done to society as a whole when individuals insist in selfish behaviour. It is only those who hold the line, remaining steadfast and dependable in their standards, who keep things from falling apart completely, trying to fix the messes others leave behind them. Imagine if every driver on the roads was allowed to do his own thing! Do we, the silent majority, really wish to have our future dictated; our laws, customs, standards - our very way of life- snatched away from us by this minority who invented the term ‘inclusiveness’ to bully everyone into feeling sorry for those who choose to opt out of societal norms? This has been waiting in the wings for a long time. No mat-

Mini ice age coming
I have to correct a previous letter’s statement that 90 per cent of the earth’s glaciers are growing. Subsequent research has shown the majority are shrinking. However in New Zealand’s case the majority (58 of them) are growing as is the case in Norway, France, Canada and parts of the Himalayas.

More telling are recent studies by NASA (2017) that Antarctica is gaining more ice than it is losing. And if you’re still sceptical about a cooling planet, how about Russian scientists’ revelation based on computer models the sun will lose sixty per cent of its solar and magnetic activity over the next 15 years triggering the next mini ice age and that is backed up by the Royal Astronomical Society and increasingly by NASA itself. Freedom of expression
Re your article on the front page of the H&P Times (Thursday, July 13). I notice the speaker mentions racism, and (being) sick to his stomach. Prehaps he is unaware that in both Australia and New Zealand we have freedom of expression, and long may that continue. That is why he is entitled to speak as he wishes. I would suggest the country of his religion does not allow that freedom, and that is racism. I think your article was a trifle biased. John Champion Mellons Bay

Village becomes fantasy island By Gerri Cruz
T
he Howick Historical Village entertained the fantastical world of fairy tales on Sunday. Each month, the village organises a live day for visitors to revel in festivities, made all the more exciting as volunteers dress up as their favourite characters. “What little girl doesn’t want a chance to dress up in their favourite fairy tale character and join in the fun?” said Howick historical village assistant, Grace Pearce. All the characters on the day were volunteers including Natasha Bates, the wicked witch in the kitchen. She has been a volunteer each month for 13 years. Bates started at 8am Sunday morning. The coal range was lit at 8.30am and she made butter using a hand shaker in the early morning cold. The butter had to be shaken for half an hour until it separated. “It was a good workout for my arms,” said Bates. Throughout the day Gingerbread stars, muffins and potato and leek soup were made on the range. Visitor Siew Whitworth brought along her daughter and four grandchildren. The children, aged between 5 and 9, were delighted with the games and rides hosted by the volunteers. Whitworth made the most of the day trying home-made gingerbread, the free sausage sizzle and purchased farm-grown eggs.

Whitworth, originally from Malaysia, said the village reminded her of the colonial houses back home. Visitor, 7 year-old Grace Thomson said her favourite character was the Mad Hatter because he was so funny. At home, her fairy tale idol is Repnunzel because of her long hair. Mad Hatter volunteer Rex Pearce by day is a storeman at
Office Max and volunteers with his family at each live day. Trent began as Santa Claus and has since been cast as all sorts of characters from the Easter Bunny to the Mad Hatter. “I love being around people.” “It’s the people that make the difference,” said Pearce. The next live day is Sunday, August 26. The theme? Brewing and Baking.

Price growth slowing N
ew Zealand’s property market is showing all the signs of being a two-tier market with Auckland median house price increasing 2.5 per cent year-on-year, but the rest of the country (excluding Auckland) showing growth of 11.4 per cent year-on-year according to the latest data from the Real Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) – source of the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand. Auckland’s median price increased to $850,500 (up from $830,000 in June 2016) and the national median excluding Auckland increased to $431,000 (up from $387,000). The REINZ House Price Index (HPI) for June 2017 further supported this trend indicating that Auckland house prices have decreased slightly by -0.6 per cent year-on-year but the rest of the country (excluding Auckland) showed growth of 9.2 per cent yearon-year. Nationally, the HPI showed an increase of 2.8 per cent. Bindi Norwell, CEO, REINZ says: “While median prices in Auckland have increased slightly year-on-year, the City of Sails had the second lowest rate of growth in the country in comparison to the 8 per cent seen in June 2016 and 27.1 per cent increase seen in June 2015. This is evidence that the ‘Supercity’ has showed signs of price growth slowing down – if you look at the month-onmonth figure it shows a drop of -0.8 per cent. “However, most regions across the rest of the country experienced double-digit (or close to it) growth and record median prices have been seen in three regions this month – Bay of Plenty ($555,000), again in Manawatu/Wanganui ($280,000) and Tasman ($581,000) highlighting the buoyancy across the rest of the country and the normal property cycle where regions are typically behind Auckland in terms of the growth curve,” continues Norwell.
Volumes down

country have continued to decline – in Auckland they are down -33.2 per cent for the year to June and nationally they’re down -24.7 per cent for the same period. The regions that experienced increased volume this month were Tasman (which saw an increase of 25 per cent) and the West Coast (a 3 per cent increase year-on-year). “We know that it’s winter and the election is just two months away now which typically impacts the number of properties sold in the market. The number of properties sold across the country is the lowest we’ve seen in the month of June for three years now – particularly in the $500,000 and under property price bracket,” says Norwell. “This slow-down in transactional activity, but stabilising price trend highlights the underlying dynamics between housing demand and housing supply, with population growth continuing to rise faster than building consents and dwelling supply,” she continues.
Days to sell up
The median number of days to sell a property nationally increased by 5 days – from 31 to 36 days in comparison to June 2016. Regionally, Hawke’s Bay again had the shortest number of days to sell (28), followed by Wellington and Southland (both on 31 days) and property on the West Coast took the longest number of days to sell (128), followed by Northland (47 days) and Bay of Plenty (41 days). In Auckland, the number of days to sell increased by 7 days year-on-year (from 31 to 38 days).
So, what does it all mean?
“The June figures show us that a number of things are happening across the residential real estate market – inventory levels are impacting pricing, LVRs are having a significant impact in terms of buyers’ ability to purchase properties (particularly for first time buyers) and that the major trading banks are being more cautious with their approach to lending

particularly their view of how highly leveraged Kiwis are when it comes to properties. “Talk of a decline in prices may be premature with the seasonally adjusted median price trends still rising across many regions in New Zealand. The Auckland market is the most mature in terms of the property cycle, however, at worst, prices in the Auckland region are steady at present. The data also shows an emerging trend of section sales in Auckland occurring more quickly than dwelling sales, highlighting that demand for sections is still rising in Auckland while demand for dwellings is easing,” continues Norwell. “With the looming election, Auckland prices are showing all the signs of stabilising that we would normally expect and we anticipate this being a similar trend over the coming months until the election is over,” concludes Norwell.

The number of properties available for sale rose by 1,895 in June compared to 12 months ago, although the number of properties for sale in the Auckland region has increased by 3,097 (57 per cent) providing more choice to buyers. Excluding Auckland, the number of properties for sale fell by 1,203 (-7.4 per cent). Compared to June 2016 the number of listings rose 4.4 per cent in Canterbury, 5.0 per cent in Wellington and 4.5 per cent in Waikato. The largest declines occurred in Northland (-367), Manawatu/Wanganui (-353) and Southland (-269).

“T
he Government’s $1 billion financing of much needed growth infrastructure is very welcome, but infrastructure requirements nationwide are now in the tens of billions and better planning, funding and delivery systems are required to meet the challenge,” says Infrastructure New Zealand’s chief executive, Stephen Selwood. “The Housing Infra-
R O WA N E S TAT E
structure Fund (HIF) is a helpful component of the Government’s housing response. The allocation of government debt to New Zealand’s fastest growing regions will improve the supply of serviced land where it is most needed. This month’s announcement combined with recent budget commitments to infrastructure investment is positive but a lot more is required, he said. “Analysis by the Office of the Auditor General consistently shows that councils across New Zealand are struggling to maintain and renew existing assets, let alone provide for growth. “In Auckland there is a $400 million to $700 million transport funding gap that must be bridged, and a 7000 home construc-
tion deficit accumulating every year. Against that, the 10,500 homes announced this month will add just 1000 homes a year.” Addressing infrastructure challenges, said Selwood, which sit at the heart of New Zealand’s housing supply issues demands more than one-off loans. “The private sector is going to need to step up and for this to happen there needs to be
certainty that public infrastructure will be funded and delivered in a timely way. “A clear and committed pipeline of projects will give infrastructure and home construction companies the confidence to invest in resources needed. “Government plans for Urban Development Agencies must also be accelerated. This could unlock opportunities for
urban development at scale where development is master planned to integrate fully with transport and infrastructure services. “New transport funding tools like road tolls are needed sooner rather than later. “We desperately need to improve governance and streamline our planning and decision making processes. The current approach to planning, funding and delivery of housing and infrastructure is not working. “While the HIF and budget allocations help in the short term, a longer term response which addresses the failed planning, governance and funding system in New Zealand is urgently needed,” Selwood says.

Auckland home buyers just got more choice, with the number of apartments listed for sale in June almost double the previous month (800 listings compared with 453 in May 2017). Real time statistics from realestate.co.nz show that the average asking price for an apartment in Auckland in June stood at $679,170. Compare that to the averaging asking price of all residential dwellings which was $917,250, which is 4.7 per cent lower than the previous month. “We’ve been collecting property data for more than 10 years and never before have we seen so many apartments come onto the market in one month. With apartments typically being more affordable than houses, this has pulled down Auckland’s total average asking price for the month,” says realestate. co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. “Kiwis have traditionally
been brought up in a home and garden environment, but housing has evolved over the decades, particularly in Auckland with apartments, subdivisions, cross leases and terraced housing very much a part of the landscape,” she says. “Ten years ago, apartments were largely confined to the Central Business District, but they are now an integrated part of developments in areas across the wider Auckland, North Shore, Waitakere and Manukau cities. “It has shifted the mindset that buying an apartment meant buying into the Auckland CBD lifestyle, which may have only appealed to a certain demographic. “Now, apartments are meeting a wider set of lifestyle stages and needs. There is significant choice, and buyers can take into consideration developments which meet their needs, for example schools, parks, shopping and local facilities,”
says Vanessa. “It provides buyers with a more costeffective way to approach the property market.” Nationally, one and two bedroom apartments made up the lion’s share of the apartment listings that came onto the market in June. Compared to June 2016, the number of one bedroom apartments increased by 45.8 per cent and two bedrooms by 28.2 per cent. However, the number of apartments for sale with three or more bedrooms decreased compared to the same time last year. Year on year, the number of apartments for sale in Auckland rose 52.8 per cent (one bedroom) 45.5 per cent (two bedrooms) and 18.3 per cent (three bedrooms or more). “The Auckland apartment market is catering to a wider variety of buyers, with one bedroom apartments best suited to students, two and three or more bedrooms appealing to families” Vanessa explains.

Beware dangerous Highlanders H
aving had the Hurricanes burst their unbeaten bubble in a 31-22 Cake Tin thriller, the Crusaders will be wary hosting the dangerous Highlanders in Saturday night’s Super Rugby quarter-final. While they will rejoice in having their All Blacks front row of Joe Moody, Codie Taylor and Owen Franks return, they will be mindful of a Highlanders backline attack that has been sharpened by the return of Ben Smith following his inner ear problem. Winning a championship that always escaped popular predecessor Todd Blackadder would cap a great season for new Crusaders head coach Scott “Razor” Robertson who has given the team a superior 15-man game plan. They will also welcome back
Agnew’s Angle from injury Ryan Crotty, probably at second-five, to allow David Hafili to return to fullback and shunt Israel Dagg to right wing where he had performed for the All Blacks over the past two seasons. While Dagg remains a class act, Hafili has been a more dangerous attacker from fullback than he has as a midfield back where Crotty and young Jack Goodhew have quickly formed a smart combination. With Beauden Barrett returning to the Hurricanes the defending champions should have too
much pace and class for the Brumbies in their Canberra clash. A big mover in recent weeks has been Hurricane Sam Lousi who has formed a more than useful locking combination with hard working Mark Abbott. With No 8 Brad Shield anchoring a scrum that has lively Ardie Savea and Callum Gibbons as tearaway flankers, the Hurricanes’ forwards deserve more kudos than they have received. However with Beauden and Jordie Barrett the stars in what is virtually an All Blacks backline, praise for their backs is understandable, especially with Jordie and Ngani Laumape making their debuts as All Blacks this season. Like Beauden, fullback Jordie is a versatile player who has shown he can play both midfield positions and even slotted into

first five late in the Hurricanes thrilling draw result against the British and Irish Lions. But no one in the championship makes more stunning breaks and covers more metres that mercurial Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie who, alongside Beauden Barrett, is the most exhilarating attacker in the game. Admittedly McKenzie’s daring deeds do result in him losing possession at times when he isolates himself from support, but the rewards in try assists heavily outweigh the risks. Long term, however, his best position looks to be first-five to which he will probably return when Aaron Cruden joins Chiefs team-mates Tawera Kerr-Barlow, James Lowe and coach Dave Rennie in leaving the NZ scene for abroad at season’s end.
Meanwhile the Chiefs will be hoping to recover quickly from their trip to Cape Town where they should account for a Stormers side guaranteed of strong home support. If they accomplish that, it will be a long journey back to NZ to face the winner of the Crusaders versus Highlanders clash, just as it will be for the Hurricanes on their way to Johannesburg to face a rampant Lions side that should feast on Sharks this Sunday. Meanwhile, having beaten the British and Irish Lions, the Blues hit rock bottom with a thud upon losing 48-21 to a Sunwolves outfit that the Johannesburg-based Lions had thrashed 94-7. Baseball NZ names age grade coaches
T
he coaching staff has been named to lead the New Zealand U15 squad into the 2018 Baseball Confederation of Oceania (BCO) Championships to be held in Auckland in January, while at the same time giving certainty to coaches by confirming a staff for U13 and U18 levels as well. Former New Zealand Diamondblacks and San Diego Padres pitcher and current National Development Officer pitcher Riki Paewai will be head coach for the team and will be assisted by former New York Mets Pitcher and Diamondblacks bullpen coach D J Carrasco, along with Wellingtonbased National Development Officer and former Baltimore Orioles minor leaguer Kris Richards and Auckland and Howick-Pakuranga youth coach Jonathan Southey. “It was a difficult process (to select the coaching panel) in the sense that we have started to develop a broader base of coaches in the country, which in recent years hasn’t always been the case,” said Baseball New Zealand CEO Ryan Flynn. “All the coaches selected and those who applied have put a lot of time into the national programme as well as local clubs and regional teams and we’re attempting to include as many coaches in national team camps and tournaments to upskill this core group as possible in the coming years. “Of course, we are on the hunt for coaches who have

a solid understanding of the game, who have game experience, and who are eager to develop our young players and compete at the highest level,” said Flynn, “but we were also looking for coaches who are eager to learn and get better, as we continue to be very much in a development stage with our youth teams.” This will be Paewai’s first time as head coach of a national team, having served as an assistant coach with the U13 Ripken team in 2014, the U18 BCO team in 2015 and last year at the U15 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Baseball World Cup in Iwaki, Japan, and Flynn says about Paewai: “Having played professionally and represented New Zealand at WBC (World Baseball Classic) tournaments, Riki has been exposed to playing and coaching baseball at the highest level, so he understands what is needed to compete, and compete under pressure. He has coached every age grade now over the past four years, and he had done a fantastic job, especially with our pitchers.” Baseball New Zealand has also confirmed coaching panels for the U13 and U18 age groups for the next two years, something Ryan Flynn believes will give the coaches the opportunity to build stronger rosters within each group and allow national coaching staff to focus on the top Kiwi players in the country and around the globe.

Triathlete Ryan Sissons has claimed bronze at the ITU World Series event in Hamburg, Germany. The former Macleans College student finished with a time of 54:23 after slightly lagging in the swim but made up time in the bike and run helped along by some quick transitions. Sissons snagged the podium finish by three seconds ahead of France’s Vincent Luis, but was narrowly beaten to silver by Australian Jacob Birtwhistle who came in at 54:20. First place was claimed by Spain’s Mario Mola who finished comfortably in 54:08.
