t is a mistake that hasn’t been rectified and residents have had enough. The problem of a parking lane for residents on the busy Cascades Road being used by private vendors to sell cars is a long-standing one. And it’s getting worse with traffic congestion increasing on a road and with one entire lane being used as an unauthorised car yard. A sign put up by Auckland Council at the site says “Strictly No Trading”. Despite that, on any given day there is a line up of 15-20 cars for sale, with the number going up to more than 30 cars sometimes. Locals want to know why the council isn’t issuing parking tickets.

Patrick Toon, long-time resident of Cascades Road, says the problem is a very serious one, not only for residents in and around the area but also for motorists who sometimes, due to sun strike, cannot see people suddenly stop their cars and zip across the road to check out the vehicles on sale. “It’s getting out of hand with people coming in and out of the parking lane, with a screech of brakes. “It’s a terrible accident waiting to happen,” he says. He has even questioned a parking warden for not issuing a parking ticket to those selling cars in the designated parking and service lane. “The parking warden said there is nothing they can do since the council has now taken it off their hands.” Mr Toon was told that the traffic

monitoring cars for trading at a spot that clearly has a sign saying `Strictly No Trading’. “If AT can go to the mall everyday to issue parking tickets, why don’t they come here? “There have been so many nearmiss accidents with people suddenly slowing down to check out the cars on sale. “Also, there is no marked area for crossing the road so people cross from anywhere after stopping to have a look at the cars. The other day I almost ran over someone who suddenly stepped out of the shadows to zip across the road,” she says. “We live in a street across from the Pakuranga golf course and it is so dangerous trying to take a tight turn into the flush median strip that merges into a lane leading to the roundabout.”

wardens could only issue a ticket if the cars didn’t have a Warrant of Fitness or a Registration. “The council made a blunder by taking it out of the hands of Auckland Transport,” he says. “I immediately wrote to the council to ask for an explanation and was given a job number. After much follow-up I was told that it was a mistake that the council had made, taking it off the parking wardens. “They said they would work on rectifying it.” That was two years ago. “But nothing has happened so far. The mistake has not been rectified,” he says. Vicky Chan, 35, a resident of 23 years in the area, wants to know why parking tickets are issued to those who park more than two hours at shopping malls “instead of Auckland Transport (AT)

Vicky clarifies saying: “I am not against a community car yard but then why not have it at Lloyds Elsmore instead of a busy road? “The parking lane is only meant for people living on the main road to park their cars.” Howick Local Board member Adele White says that the local board is working on a solution with the council and that it is an urgent priority.

Frustration over ongoing delay in Bucklands Beach restoration By Therese Henkin

C

oncern is mounting over continuing delays relating to a restoration project at Bucklands Beach. More than 200 people gathered earlier this month to show support for the proposed restoration effort at the beach. There are worries for the sea wall at the northern end of Little Bucklands Beach, as a decision has still not been made to repair the sea wall. That wall, which was built in the 1950s to protect the road from rough waves, has been identified as structurally unsound and requires major remedial work within the next five years, according to the Annual Shoreline Inspection Report that was released in May. Former Howick Local Board member Steve Udy says he is disappointed the Board has not yet prioritised repairing the sea wall and included it in its long-term plan. “I think that the local board needs to grasp the urgency and start to move on this, rather than just drifting with the current,” says Udy, who is working alongside resident and former Olympian Bruce Kendall to provide a solution-based approach to the dilemma. “Within five years, if we leave

the wall as is, it’s going to collapse and take the road down with it. All we are asking is that the board prioritise a seawall resolution,” he says. “Five years is not a long time, it’s basically only one council term. So this needs to be dealt with now.” Udy and Kendall have a vision for the Bucklands beach restoration which starts with the northern half of little Bucklands Beach which they believe poses the greatest risk to public safety. The pair presented their proposed solution to the Howick Local Board on behalf of the Eastern and Bucklands Beach Residents and the Ratepayers Association earlier this year and suggested fixing the sea wall with a bevelled loose stonewall that gives foundations for a footpath and restore the beach by covering the sharp black rocks with sand and shells. What Udy and Kendall are suggesting is that once the Howick Local Board include the sea wall restoration into their long term plan, they can start pushing for Auckland Council and Auckland Transport to get on board. “This is going to take more than just the local board funding to fix. What’s going to happen is that it’s probably going to have to come out the council’s environmental budget and that’s going to require

disappointed: Concern is mounting as the seawall at little Bucklands Beach Times Photo Therese Henkin remains unfixed. Pictured Steve Udy.

Auckland Council itself to get behind it. “All we want [Auckland Council and Auckland Transport] to do is start putting a couple [of] hundred thousand towards this project each year and that way there will be sufficient funds to get the restoration going,” Udy says. He believes the board is delaying the solution by taking focus away from the sea wall. “One of the questions the board is still asking, and I think it’s a

valid question, is that why don’t we do Big Bucklands, which experiences flooding several times a year, first?” “Our position on that is the Big Bucklands’ flooding problem is a far more difficult problem to solve than fixing little Bucklands, and far more costly. Also, we feel it can be managed by knowing that six times a year we are going to have the spring tide,” Udy says. “The biggest concern with that is water getting into the pipes

under the road; however Auckland Transport can manage this without going to the big fix right away. The sea wall on the other hand is going to fall down. You can already put a foot under the road. And we are racing against time to fix it.” Howick Parks Advisor for Auckland Council, Greer O’Donnell says work has been under way for some time to identify the best management options for Bucklands beach, but says a coastal management project like this is complex in nature. “The options available for mitigating further damage to the seawall at Little Bucklands Beach will be considered and a decision on the appropriate coastal management response will be made once further information is available from technical experts,” O’Donnell says. She says the availability of this information is expected in the coming months, and will ensure the best long-term management option for the area is implemented. “Both Auckland Council and Auckland Transport are responsible for ensuring that the appropriate coastal management responses are implemented in order to protect the assets impacted and ensure the appropriate level of amenity and service is provided to the public.”

TEAMWORK The team at Highland Park Jewellers is a shining example of job satisfaction and loyalty – most have been on staff for many years and that speaks volumes for the kind of business, owners Paul and Jules Taylor have fostered over 20 years. Here are the team members who have helped make this jewellery store a respected household name.

hen owners Paul and Jules Taylor opened the store in Highland Park Shopping Centre two decades ago, the goal was to serve the community with exceptional service and superior quality jewellery. It’s a goal that has never changed. Paul started out 52 years ago as an apprentice manufacturing jeweller, serving four years with a Papatoetoe jeweller before transferring to a diamond ring manufacturer in Auckland’s downtown Victoria Arcade. He rejoined his previous employer in 1971 then formed a new company, Paul Taylor Manufacturing Jewellers, after his employer retired. “Some years later, when visiting Highland Park I noticed vacant premises. That was the start of a whole new opportunity,” Paul says. “On July 4, 1997 I opened my new retail and manufacturing business – Highland Park Jewellers – and began selling retail as well as manufacturing and supplying across the industry including exporting to several countries.” Today Paul Taylor and his team of skilled designers and jewellers go to great lengths to create one-of-a-kind pieces for clients seeking something personal. “Everyone takes immense personal pride in the work they do and they ensure clients’ own jewellery is handled with extreme care,” Paul says. And among the team is his wife Jules who became fully involved when the shop had been up and running for two years. “I had my own hairdressing salon in Parnell for many years. However, when the Highland Park store became busier and busier it made sense that I should play a role. “Having been a hairdresser I found it easy to connect with people and I had a sense for retail design.” Subsequently, Jules has built up a strong relationship with many loyal customers who

I was born in South Africa and qualified at Durban University of Technology then immigrated to NZ in October 2013. I started at Highland Park Jewellers the following year and stayed. I am passionate about engagement and wedding jewellery and jewellery photography. The best thing about my job is seeing the smile on clients’ faces when they receive their very own bespoke piece of jewellery that I have been involved with from conception through to the handover.

MARTIN I’ve been in the trade for 25 years and started with Paul in 2001. I soon found my niche here as a repair specialist and jewellery designer. In particular, I have been thrilled by the success of my Rose and Koru designed ring, incorporating an English Rose and NZ Koru. I love creating gifts that will live on and I believe the special relationships I have built with customers are part of the satisfaction I gain every day.

love to chat and discuss jewellery trends. “I am always impressed at how romantic the gift jewellery can be and I love to help customers settle on that special piece for a loved one. It’s a wonderful journey.” Of course, Highland Park Jewellers, offers a wide range of services including designing and creating engagement rings and dress jewellery, remodelling of old jewellery, restoring family heirlooms and valuations. With an on-site LaserStar micro-welding workstation, the team can also repair most jewellery easily and with less risk to valuable pieces. With brands such as PUZZLE ™, Najo, Pastiche, Astina and Obaku, Paul has ensured the store carries the finest range of watches and ready-made jewellery including rings, earrings, bracelets, charms and other items. “However, we are especially known for expressive, bespoke jewellery ranging from traditional elegance to contemporary

innovation and with our on-site workshop we also specialise in remodelling existing pieces,” he says. “For example, if a customer has rings, bangles or other pieces which are no longer fashionable but still have great sentimental value, we can use them to recreate a new piece. In this way links to the past are retained and the wearer has a stunning new piece too.” In addition, Paul has also built more than 1500 master patterns of charms, supplying New Zealand and Australia with a vast array of sterling silver and gold charms. Now, after 20 years, customers can still expect individuality and flair from custommade pieces, or the in-store selection, with Paul and his team available to discuss individual requests. For more information visit Highland Park Jewellers, Highland Park Shopping Centre, Open Mon-Fri 8.30am-5.30pm; Sat 9am-4pm. Ph 537-5656.

Ann is well known for her friendly and heartwarming service always going the extra distance to make customers feel welcome. Here’s what she says about her role: “My 48 years in the industry, 16 of them at Highland Park Jewellers are, I hope, testimony to the fact that selling is my passion. I take pride is providing quality service to ensure customers leave the shop delighted with their purchase and with the attention and advice received.

SOUBINH Born in Laos, I trained in NZ and started my career here in 1985 by assembling silver and gold chains and polishing charms. In 1999 I joined Highland Park Jewellers and since then I’ve expanded my skill set by learning the jewellery casting process and how to set stones into jewellery. I am also highly skilled in jewellery repairs and welcome the chance to mend precious items so they can still be worn.

JAY After studying at MIT, I graduated as a jewellery manufacturer in 2012 and started working with Paul in 2013. Here, I have extended my skill set in jewellery repairs and manufacture and I’m now studying for a gemology degree. I am extremely passionate about all things connected to jewellery, photography and art and willingly share this knowledge. Being fluent in mandarin, I can also offer translation to a wide part of the community.

Eco-Cafe making bit of a difference

24th - 30th July 2017

By Therese Henkin

O

ne of our own is changing the way Aucklander’s think about sustainability. Pakuranga resident, Taryn Shirkey, is the founder of the new Auckland pop-up cafe, Wander Eco-Cafe, which opened its doors to the public in March. Based out of a renovated trailer in Wynyard Quarter, Wander Eco-cafe prides itself on using fully compostable packaging, mostly organic ingredients and offering fresh baked wholesome foods that come directly from owner to customer. “Our goal is to spark a little bit of consciousness around the way people consume everything, from food to packaging,” says the 22-year-old business owner. “There are so many people who are ignorant about sustainability and the benefits of using organic products. It’s about using things that are safe for the environment, that reduce waste and are good for us,” she says. Shirkey hopes to encourage people to consume sustainably by making it easier for them to create less waste. “We run a promotion where if you buy eight coffees you get your ninth free. However, if you bring your own cup, it counts as two coffees and you get two stamps. It’s a little incentive for people to use their own cups. “We also sell our own ‘Keep Cups’ that are reusable and people are quick to say, “I don’t want to spend money on that cup. And I always say, ‘its okay, you don’t have to buy

our cup, bring your mug from work’. For me this isn’t a marketing thing for my cups, it’s about the environment,” she says. Although Shirkey and her team are doing their part by providing packaging that comes from the plants, she says the biggest challenge is people don’t realise that buying compostable packaging is only the first step. “We try really hard to let people know that if they throw their compostable cups in the rubbish, it doesn’t actually get composted, but there are a lot of people who are so stuck in their ways that they don’t listen,” she says. “If it doesn’t end up back with the plants, you almost haven’t achieved anything. The only thing that you’ve helped is that if it ever made it to the ocean, it wouldn’t harm the ocean.” The entrepreneur is determined not to give up. As well as

having a compost bin available beside Wander and encouraging people to only throw the packaging away in compostable bins, she is working alongside business surrounding Wynyard Quarter to provide compost bins in their offices. She says if you had asked her two years ago if she would have her own cafe today, she would have laughed. Shirkey came up with the idea for an eco-cafe with her friend Sophie Elliot while they were both studying marine biology at Auckland University and says people are constantly surprised at her career change. “I hate how we are all forced to just have one dream. I have a million dreams, and I love a million things and I want to do all of them in my lifetime,” she says. Shirkey says that she can’t wait to come back to her marine biology career one day, but for now she believes Wander Eco-Cafe is her mission.

You may have found Ormiston Police Station unusually quiet yesterday. Instead, you would have seen more police, from frontline officers to the area commander, out on the streets. This move is part of Operation Pay Day, a fortnightly initiative started earlier this year to reduce victimisation, improve trust and confidence in the community and to improve knowledge and skills within the police teams on different areas of policing. Each fortnight focuses on a different aspect of policing with this week’s focus on road policing, which saw Ormiston Police Station personnel head out to major intersections, school zones and highspeed areas in the counties Manukau area. “Road Policing concentrates on what we call the ‘fatal five’ offences which are Speed, Intersections, Restraints, Alcohol and

High risk drivers such as disqualified or suspended drivers. These are seen as the most common contributors to people crashing,” says Senior Sergeant and Crime Prevention Manager, Stephen Richards. “This is not solely about enforcement,” he says. “It is mostly about preventing the offence before it occurs, by being highly visible in high speed areas and intersections that are high crash risks.” Reassurance visits, preventative visits, and proactive patrolling in hot locations where increased crime is recorded are also key parts of the operation. Richards says the response to the operation has been very positive, with community members and business owners expressing their appreciation for the police getting out and about. “People like to see our police men and women out on the streets, walking the talk, instead of only seeing us drive past in our cars, with

From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, they all have their quirks and Ben is perfectly placed to show us how funny they all are. Perhaps most well known for his regular Ben Hurley stint on 7 Days, Ben is Photo supplied / Kate Little no stranger to stand up either having performed comedy for more than 15 years but this show is the biggest challenge he’s set himself to date. Unlike most shows which grow out of material that’s been tried and tested on audiences throughout the year, this show has to be written specifically around this theme. Metro NZ has called Hurley’s execution “on point”. “He roars onto the stage with child-like energy and manages to keep himself – and the audience – buzzing throughout the entire hour”. Your round trip leaves from Uxbridge Arts & Culture centre on Thursday August 10th at 7pm – don’t miss it!

HMB pier among finalists in CCNZ awards T

he Waterview Tunnel construction is one of eight Auckland finalists in the civil contracting industry’s equivalent of the academy awards being held in Dunedin next week. The Civil Contractors New Zealand’s (CCNZ) four-day conference starts on August 2 and the highlight for all industry attendees will be the celebration of the CCNZ National Awards 2017 held on Friday, August 4. The awards programme is comprised of three groups: the CCNZ Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards, the CCNZ Z People Awards and the CCNZ Connexis Company

Awards. As its title implies, the CCNZ Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards recognises excellence in the construction or maintenance of assets. It has five categories with 27 finalists. Four Auckland projects are competing in the category for projects worth up to $5 million: the new tug berth structure at Waitemata Seaport by HEB Construction; the development of Le Roy’s Lookout at Birkenhead by Downers NZ; the new ferry pier at Half Moon Bay, also by Downer NZ; and the development at Kopupaka Reserve by ICB Retaining & Construction.

The Waterview Connection is up against two other finalists in the category for projects of more than $100 million: the Mackays to Pekapeka Expressway north of Wellington and the Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild. Hirepool GM of Sales & Marketing, Gary Richardson, said his company’s gear had helped build some of New Zealand’s largest projects over the last 60 years, including the Waterview Connection. “So we’ve seen the great work that these companies do up close, and it’s a natural fit and privilege for us sponsor these awards. The work these companies

have done in all entries is a testament to the people in their teams so well done to them all.” The Connexis Company Awards recognise employers that help staff to gain nationally recognised qualifications to create strong career pathways. Two of the finalists across four categories are ICB Retaining & Construction based in Rosedale and Johnstone Construction based in Remuera. The Z People Awards celebrate great leadership

in the civil construction sector. James Dawson, 30, a cadet quality surveyor / junior project manager at Johnstone Construction is a finalist in the Training Development Award. This award recognises individuals who have developed a career path and taken on offered training opportunities. The Z People Awards and Connexis Company Awards will be announced at a lunch on Friday 4thAugust while the Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards will be announced

at a formal dinner that evening. CCNZ CEO Peter Silcock said the awards were an annual highlight for the civil construction industry and a chance to celebrate the extremely hard and dedicated work that CCNZ members undertook on every project. “Our members create the backbone of the nation and the awards are a way to say ‘thanks for doing a wonderful job, we really appreciate what you do for your communities’.”

The Damaging Effects of Forward Head Posture (FHP)

T

he effects of posture on health are becoming more evident. Spinal pain, headaches, moodiness, blood pressure, pulse rate and lung capacity are among the many functions most easily influenced by posture. Many symptoms, including pain, may be moderated or eliminated by improved posture. One of the most common postural problems is Forward Head Posture (FHP). Since we live in a forward facing world, the repetitive use of computers, TV, video games, trauma and even backpacks have forced the body to adapt to a forward head posture. Repetitive movements in a certain direction will strengthen nerve and muscle pathways to move that way more readily and cause postural changes over time. It is the repetition of forward head movements combined with poor postures and/or trauma that causes the body to adapt to a Forward Head Posture. ‘Text neck’ can also be a contributor of FHP. This is the term used to describe the injuries and pain sustained from looking down at mobile phones or other devices for too long. ‘Text neck’ does not occur only from texting, looking down to read also causes this. The symptoms associated with text neck include chronic headaches, upper back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and increased curvature of the spine. Ideally the head should sit directly on the neck and shoulders, like a golf ball

sits on a tee. The weight of the head is more like a bowling ball than a golf ball, so holding it forward, out of alignment, puts a strain on your neck and upper back muscles. The result can be muscle fatigue, an aching neck, pain, burning sensations, jaw tension, headaches and bite problems. When spinal tissues are subjected to a significant load for sustained periods of time, they deform and undergo remodelling changes that could become permanent. Overtime FHP has been shown to flatten the normal neck curve, resulting in disc compression and damage, and early arthritis of the spine. Remember, long standing postural problems like FHP will cause spine and nerve damage, and symptoms rarely present early on but rather after several months or years. If you or anyone in your family has FHP, don’t wait until it’s too late!

WARNING SIGNS OF FHP: • Tight muscles • Headaches • Head forward on shoulders • Restricted shoulder and neck movement • Lack of energy • Pins and needles in arms and/or hands • Abnormal bite • Burning sensation in shoulders and neck • Tightness in upper chest • Arm, elbow or wrist pain • Tension in jaw muscles • Increased curvature of the spine

BBI students cook up fresh ideas By Kelly Teed

T

wo Bucklands Beach Intermediate Students have been named as semi-finalists in this year’s Maggi Pop-Up Kitchen Showdown. Stephanie Chong and Amy Xlong were “very surprised” to discover they’d made the cut with their quinoa salad creation. The cooking competition is now in its eighth year and encourages healthy cooking and eating habits for 11-16 year olds. Dishes must include the use of at least 1 Maggi Recipe Base from a select list, be a balanced main course with around half the plate consisting of fibrous vegetables, one quarter being a lean protein source and another quarter made up of a starchy carbohydrate such as potatoes, rice or pasta. The meal must serve a family of four people, cost a maximum of $20 to make and be able to be made and plated in 30 minutes. Stephanie and Amy were officially

announced as the first semi-finalists on TVNZ’s The Adam and Eve Show yesterday afternoon. They said it was “amazing” to be surprised with the news at school after their teacher told them Fresh Choice supermarket would be coming to drop off some ingredients for them – but a television camera crew showed up instead. They were inspired to make their creation by a former teammate’s family recipe for quinoa before the third team member quit the Maggi competition to pursue choir. The recipe started off as a quinoa salad before adding to it with sauce and a garnish of kale chips. Food Technology teacher Beth McCrystal said it was a “wonderful, amazing” achievement for the girls. “They had no idea – when the crew turned up and I told them to go and answer the door, they started screaming and shouting and carrying on.” Mrs McCrystal said the competition is a great way to encourage students to get creative in the kitchen and to try out new ingredients and flavour combinations. This is the second year in a row BBI has made the semi-finals with Mrs McCrystal at the helm – last year’s team came in first overall – and she said it was “pretty special” to make it this far again. Six semi-finalists are announced, with three teams making it to the Grand Final in Christchurch where competitors will take to the kitchen in a Masterchef-type challenge that’s nerve wracking for both teachers and students alike, said Mrs McCrystal. “The kids go into the kitchen and have 30 minutes to do it all [while] we go into another room. We don’t get to see anything until the end.” The winning school is awarded $5000 while each winning student receives $250.

Powerball’s winning streak continued on Saturday night with a player winning $8 million with Powerball First Division in Saturday’s live Lotto draw. The $8 million prize is made up of $7 million from Powerball First Division and $1 million from Lotto First Division. The winning ticket was sold at Botany New World in Auckland. This is the second time this month that the Powerball jackpot has been struck. A Tauranga local won $10.3 million at the start of the month, on a ticket bought through MyLotto. Anyone who bought their ticket from Botany New World should write their name on the back of the ticket and check it immediately at any Lotto outlet, online at mylotto.co.nz or through the Lotto NZ App. Thanks to Lotto players, Kaikoura and its surrounding communities will receive a further $7.5m in funding this year to help with rebuilding after last year’s devastating earthquake.

Are you ready for a silent challenge? wearing the provided ear protectors. Since The National Foundation for the Deaf recently opened registrations for the Silent Leadership Challenge campaign, a lot of individuals and companies are demonstrating their leadership in creating awareness about Noise Induced Hearing Loss by registering online to take part in the fundraising campaign. The Foundation’s Silent Leadership Challenge campaign manager, Lisa Talbot says: “We’ve found that getting involved in the challenge can have a powerful effect on people in the workplace - it really does create understanding to think twice about being exposed to noisy sounds over 85DB and using protectors.” You can choose your own fundraising event challenges or you can use the four x 10 minute communication challenges from The National Foundation for the Deaf which are: ■ One on one – wear hearing protectors and chat with one person ■ Team meeting – wear hearing protectors and facilitate an active discussion with more than one person talking at once ■ Being social – wear hearing protectors at a noisy café or function ■ At home – wear hearing protectors while watching TV with the family (as mentioned I am not too concerned if this challenge is not done) Fundraising ideas that other organisations have used: ■ Quiz and charade nights

■ Raffles: selling tickets to support those participating in the Challenge. ■ Morning tea: eat in silence for five minutes – either the employees bake or the company supplies morning tea and all employees make a donation ■ Movie nights ■ Black tie day, off to the races ■ Incorporate Challenges into tool box meetings Register at: www.silentleadershipchallenge.com Once you have registered a page link will be emailed, whereby you can raise funds using your social and professional networks. A welcome pack which includes your hearing protectors will be couriered. v t

A snapshot of the ‘Listen Hear! New Zealand’ report key findings shows: ■ Hearing loss is a significant issue facing the New Zealand population as 880,350 people in New Zealand now live with some type of hearing loss, representing 18.9 per cent of the population. ■ The health sector costs were estimated at $131.8 million ■ The total loss of tax revenue was estimated to be $254.6 million ■ Hearing loss cost the New Zealand economy $957.3 million ■ The net value of lost well-being and social impact were estimated at $3.9 billion ■ Total cost of hearing loss was estimated at $4.9 billion

he National Foundation for the Deaf is calling for registrations for its annual online fundraising event on August 4 called The Silent Leadership Challenge. Times Newspapers has partnered with the National Foundation for the Deaf to create awareness for those with hearing problems by undertaking a series of challenges – starting with interviewing Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross with hearing protectors. The challenge is also to raise awareness about Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) in the workplace and the consequences of losing hearing, which can be an invisible disability in the community for the 880,350 New Zealanders with hearing loss. NIHL is caused by single instances of extreme noise and prolonged exposure to noise can lead, to sudden or gradual sensorineural hearing loss, as a result of damage to the sensory cells. NIHL is commonly associated with occupational-related noise in industries such as agriculture, manufacturing and construction and may occur with noisy leisure pursuits like mowing the lawns or listening to loud music. The Silent Leadership Challenge requires participants to undergo some challenging communication tasks in the workplace and at home, wearing bright yellow hearing protectors to simulate deafness. The challenge includes communicating and participating in one-to-one meetings, a team meeting in the workplace and watching television, whilst

Peering into the past The ninth annual History Fair for Home Schoolers was held on Friday, July 14 in Manukau. It was a huge success if enthusiasm, hard work, well-researched content and presentations and overall organisation by co-ordinator Shona Rakete and volunteers. One of the judges, Wally Rice, spoke of the high standard of the visual displays and the children were well prepared and able to speak confidently on their chosen Peer Into The Past history topic. The variety of topics was broad - Albert Einstien, The History of Photography, Walt Disney, The History of the Scientific Method, The Black Plague, Ancient Egyptian Mummies, Who was Sacagawea, Roman Emperors – Infamy or Insanity and The History of Comic Sans to name a few and this provided a feast of learning for audience and participants alike. Feedback Opposition must speak up

Jami-Lee Ross writes a very good but debatable treatise on his government’s achievements. Debatable in that the growth he boasts is built on massive both domestic and government debt at such a level that we are now in the top 25 per cent. Of most indebted nations in all OECD countries and, with all such debt, inevitably chickens will come home to rest. Secondly, the sale of productive land to foreigners to also boost the economy is nothing short of disgraceful in my view. No doubt Jami-Lee is a stalwart national campaigner and he does it well. I have no gripes with that my issue is with the opposition. Pre-

sumably they get paid to oppose the encumbent party but as far as Howick Pakuranga you have to wonder if they exist. The Howick and Pakuranga Times is an excellent voice for the region so where are the Labour and Greens’ voices in it. There was a saying many years ago you could put a monkey in the electorate representing Remuera and the Nats (dare I say the Tories) would still win the electorate. Howick-Pakuranga, without opinions from the opposition, is pretty much moving in the same direction. It’s time the Greens and Labour representatives for the region earned their keep. Race Unity Speech

As regional coordinator of the Race Unity Speech Awards, I was thrilled to see the coverage of the presentation of the shields to Mortaza Sahar and his school, Pakuranga College. Mortaza was certainly a worthy winner of this year’s Auckland regional competition with his thought-provoking speech which drew on some of his personal experiences of racism. With his win, Mortaza became the 17th student to be awarded the Auckland shield since the competition was initiated by the Zealand Baha’i Community in 2001. It began after a series of nasty racially-motivated incidents which deeply concerned an

Auckland Baha’i, Hedi Moani, who subsequently consulted with the Race Relations Office to see what could be done. A “Unity in Diversity Rally” held in Aotea Square lead to further discussions with the Race Relations Office, and resulted in Race Relations Day being established in New Zealand in March 1999. Sadly, though, Hedi was tragically killed just a few months before the event was first held in this country. The Speech Awards were initiated in his memory and are held in support of Race Relations Day. The competition – which now runs in nearly every part of the country – neatly encompasses three things that were dear to Hedi’s heart: fostering positive

race relations, oratory, and youth. Congratulations to Mortaza for his part in promoting positive race relations in Aotearoa New Zealand. Hedi would be proud of you for your part in continuing his legacy. The New Zealand Police have been the principal sponsors of the competition since 2008, with other sponsorship coming from the Human Rights Commission, the Hedi Moani Charitable Trust and the Office of Ethnic Communities. The New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils and Speech New Zealand offer further valuable support. Eric Neal Golflands ■■ You can view Mortaza’s speech on www.raceunity.co.nz

Shellfish “plundered”

It’s very hard to get photos as they are so far away and spread out (all the little black dots in photos are people - there are 45 in my last photo). I have been here for half an hour (Monday afternoon) walking my dog and I have literally counted in excess of 80 people. They are constantly coming and going! It is shocking. The limit is 50 each - that’s well over 4000 cockles gone today and I’ve only been here half an hour. Rachel J Cockle Bay

Feedback Let’s look at renewable energy In New Zealand we are very privileged that those before us have valued our climate by investing in renewable energy. Today we are reaping the benefits of having approximately 80 per cent of our country’s energy from renewable sources. Although 80 per cent looks like an impressive number in comparison to that of other countries, there is still a lot of progress to be made in New Zealand in regards to renewables. If we want to be sustainable and stay truly ‘clean and green’ we must have 100 per cent renewable and decentralised sources of energy. The fossil fuel industry is impacting New Zealand’s climate through expelling carbon dioxide into the atmosphere continuously which has long lasting negative impacts causing the climate to warm. In New Zealand we are affected by the ozone hole which is directly above us. This hole is growing as the burning of

fossil fuels continues for energy production whilst endangering the health of New Zealanders. An increasing amount of harmful rays from the sun are entering our atmosphere which correlates with higher skin cancer rates therefore it is crucial that New Zealand continues towards having a cleaner energy system. The old Huntly power station creates high carbon emissions as it runs by burning coal, some of which is imported Indonesian coal. If this power station was to be decommissioned and replaced with renewable sources, it would benefit our climate in many ways. The emissions from the burning of coal would be eliminated as well as the emissions produced by transportation of the coal to New Zealand. This reduction in emissions will help New Zealand to achieve the targets set by the Paris Agreement whilst also having local health benefits by not contributing to the ozone hole. Another way in which New Zealand can move towards hav-

ing a cleaner energy system is by decentralising our energy sources. Decentralising means that our energy is produced in our communities to suit our needs and people will no longer be at the mercy of large corporates setting high prices. In New Zealand, the major energy companies are publicly owned by shareholders but managed privately and centrally. Decentralising our energy is important because the local users have control over their energy and can tailor it to suit their needs. An example of decentralising energy is in Germany where a national programme helps anyone who wants to produce renewable energy to do it in a way which is simple, stable and profitable. This programme has encouraged small, non-corporate players to become renewable energy providers. Roughly half of Germany’s renewable energy facilities are in the hands of farmers, citizen groups and hundreds of energy cooperatives.

They don’t only generate power, they also generate revenue for their communities by selling back to the grid and nearly 400,000 jobs have been created. In this example people now manage their energy source to suit their needs. This decentralisation allows for a faster transition to being 100 per cent renewable which our climate is in need of as energy production is no longer subject to market forces. As fossil fuel-based power plants are shut down in a movement towards a climate conscious energy system, a major concern is the loss of jobs of their workers. Decentralisation is shown to create jobs and opportunities for people which directly addresses this concern. Another example of this decentralisation of the energy system is in Denmark in the year 2000 when approximately 85 per cent of wind turbines were owned by small players such as farmers and co-ops. These people work within the context of an ambi-

tious, well-designed national framework with a goal other than profit-making at the forefront. There are plenty of examples around the world where large-scale and privately-owned renewable energy projects fell apart because they were imposed from the outside without local input or profit sharing which illustrates the importance of community engagement and decentralisation. With people gaining control over their electrical power, they also gain power as a community. New Zealand can make significant improvements in regards to renewables by engaging people through strong national frameworks and encouraging decentralisation of energy systems. New Zealand must continue to strive to ensure our energy is from 100 per cent renewable sources. (Excerpts taken from the book ‘This changes everything’ by Naomi Klein) Rachel Cooper, Howick

Runway plan not right

As a previous Manukau City Councillor who was kicked off the committee hearing submissions on the proposed northern runway due to my public stand against the proposal, the news announced today (July 21) that they are planning to build a longer runway north of the original site is no surprise. I believe that this was always the plan right from the beginning, as it makes more sense from the Airport Company’s perspective to get a foot in the door so to speak, and then persuade the new Auckland Council to grant an amendment to the original designation. In my opinion the original designation agreed to by the Manukau City Council 16 years ago was a “done deal” and the decision was narrowly passed by the committee after I was kicked off the panel for trying to defend the residents who would be subject to an ever-increasing noise of planes passing overheard. The alternative plan put forward by Cr Bill Kirk (ex-Air NZ pilot) and myself, was for the new runway to be built in the harbour to the south with a flight path mostly over a commercial area in Wiri and few homes. This was argued against by the Airport Company, one of the main reasons given that Maori would never accept a runway build into the Harbour, they were probably never given a

Not a great design I use the bus shelter on Glenmore Road [near Butley Avenue]. The rain pours in. When you sit on the seat you can not see the bus proper explanation and now face planes flying right next to their land at Ihumatao and Mangere. Another suggestion which I endorsed, and suggested in the past, was why not expand the existing airport at Whenuapai and share the pleasure of air traffic flights across the city, and at the same time halve the vehicle traffic to

coming as the window is facing away from the approaching bus. I agree with Paul not very well thought out. Lynne Mangere. Surely that makes sense, and maybe we who live in the East and South can fly over the north west part of Auckland occasionally, instead of those residents always having the pleasure of keeping those of us who live in Papatoetoe and Botany awake at night. Each year 48 students attend - 46 are actors selected from the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival, held regionally in mid-March to April, and nationally over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Each student is selected based on their performance in these festivals, with their development in their selected workshops, which are held over that National Festival weekend, being a contributing factor. Audiences can expect to see plays that may be new to them as well as one of the classics as this year two of the three directors opted for some of the lesser known Shakespeare plays. Peter

Hambleton will be directing The Comedy of Errors, Robin Payne, The Winter’s Tale, and Eleanor Bishop, The Taming of the Shrew. This will be SGCNZ’s 22nd NSSP, which was established in 1996, five years after the organisation itself. The week is designed to widen the students’ knowledge of theatre, as well as encourage a more personal understanding and interpretation of the world in which they live. From this group of 48 students 24 will be picked to travel to Shakespeare’s Globe in London, an opportunity that has been available through SGCNZ since Sam Wanamaker reconstructed the theatre near its original 17th Century site on the River Thames in 1997. SGCNZ NSSP 2017 will be held at Scots College in Strathmore Park and the performances will take place in Wellington in early October of this year. These are open to the public on both Saturday 7 October 2017 at 7.30pm and Sunday 8 October 2017 at 4.00pm. Further information is below.

Mayor welcomes new infrastructure fund A

uckland Mayor Phil Goff and Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore have welcomed the Government’s announcement at the weekend of a new infrastructure investment vehicle. “Funding provided through a Crown Company, Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP), will enable Auckland to speed up the construction of thousands of new homes in our city,” Mr Goff said. “Earlier this year we took to Government the concept of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to fund infrastructure in a way that recognises constraints on further Council borrowing. “Under this vehicle we have lodged proposals with Government that would enable us to bring forward construction of around 23,300 new homes in South and North Auckland, much earlier than would otherwise be possible. “The announcement of the SPV was made in Drury today (Sunday) because this area will be the likely first recipient of initial funding with 700 homes planned. “The initial investment of $387 million in transport and water infrastructure in Drury south and west, Paerata and Pukekohe will enable the construction of 17,800 dwellings much earlier than would otherwise be the case. “A further major development

will be around Wainui in north Auckland with $201 million in infrastructure funding required for an additional 5500 dwellings.” The new investment vehicle will provide capital from Government and the private sector which will not be debt on council’s books. It will be funded through development contributions and targeted rates within the new housing developments. “Auckland is growing by 45,000 new residents a year and requires unprecedented levels of infrastructure growth to keep up with demand,” said Mr Goff. “Increasing the supply of housing is a critical part of overcoming our housing shortage and slowing price rises caused by demand exceeding supply of housing. The new Unitary Plan ensures there is adequate land, green and brownfield, to meet demand, but infrastructure servicing that land is necessary for homes actually to be built. “SPVs are another tool in our toolbox to enable us to lift the scale and pace of new housing development,” the Mayor said. Meanwhile Infrastructure New Zealand chief executive Stephen Selwood said the Government’s announcement provides a means to dramatically increase housing supply. “Timely delivery of trunk infra-

structure is a major constraint on developers’ ability to deliver housing across New Zealand,” Mr Selwood said. “Under this model, Crown Infrastructure Partners will facilitate partnerships between the Government and local councils to enable private investment in roads and water treatment plants to unlock land for development. “Traditionally councils have been unable to deliver infrastructure soon enough because of other demands on funding and political constraints on their ability to increase property rates and fund debt.” Under this model, the debt will be covered by private investors. “The $600 million seed fund announced today (on Sunday) will enable CIP to cover initial demand risk until the developments are in place and new ratepayers are able to pay for the infrastructure. As the Crown is repaid, it will then be able to recycle that capital into new developments. “A key advantage of this approach is that the cost of the infrastructure is not included in the up-front cost of a home. This will reduce house prices, meaning smaller mortgages. “Instead, home owners will pay for the infrastructure services over time through targeted rates on their properties.”

New kitchen works perfectly on old footprint Janette and the entire family are enjoying the sleek new kitchen.

The new kitchen created by Jag Kitchens for the Elliott Family of Cockle Bay has beautifully blended aspects of the old with the new. The stunning new cabinetry and fittings in Arctic White were built on the footprint of the old kitchen and really complement the existing character ceiling – complete with rafters and wooden floors. “Everything is so modern and accessible, but I’m glad we retained the wooden ceilings and floors as they work so perfectly with the new style,” Janette Elliot says. She lives in the smart 80s brick and tile home with her husband, Brent, and their two adult children. When the Elliotts moved into their home, the kitchen benches were very low to cater for the original owner, who was short. Brent is particularly tall and short term they raised the bench height with the addition of some Formica tops. By the time they started researching a new kitchen; it was all looking

very dated and the wooden cabinetry particularly well-worn. Jag Kitchen designer, Frances Fothergill and the Elliotts are all delighted with the new look and a very functional kitchen. “We modernised the look totally with all the cabinetry in Artic White melamine, minimalistic Tirane handles recessed into the top of the doors and a chunky engineered stone benchtop (50mm Smart stone Gelsomino) in white with a lightly speckled effect. The old pantry with louvre doors was replaced by a smart Blum Space Tower with drawers,” explains Frances. “And instead of a small island bench, we transformed the space by adding a waterfall end at the end of the kitchen bench. Connected to this we added some lower cabinets with a benchtop overhang on three sides to form a table large enough to seat six.” A new glass splashback was added and the paintwork refreshed with Resene’s Rice Cake – giving the place a peaceful ambience.

“It’s much more appealing to make a meal in this new kitchen with everything you need close at hand – including a special drawer for oils and another for spices. The Space Tower also gives amazing access to the pantry items as the five drawers have fully extending runners.” Janette enjoyed working with Frances and the team at Jag Kitchens and found the service they offered was very good. “I loved the process of showing designs in 3D. This made a huge difference as it is so much easier than looking at a flat plan. I find it hard to imagine the end results from just a plan, but we could take away the actual 3D pictures and look at them at home and imagine the new kitchen in our space.” Jag Kitchens specialise in custom-designed kitchens and has its own manufacturing plant. The staff also use a state of the art 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.

Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE. Visit www.jagkitchens.co.nz for more information on a wide range of materials and design options or to see more kitchen examples.

Crockers Market Research July 2017 Investors’ thoughts on labour party’s rental tax reform

In May 2017, the Labour Party announced that if elected, they would phase out negative gearing over 5 years, by allowing tax deductions from investment property losses to be deducted only from housing income, not all income as is currently the rule. The intent of this law change would be to reduce property speculation and so make housing more affordable. The additional tax revenue would be used to fund insulation and heating grants.

Impact on residential property prices

Some 42 per cent of investors feel that the proposed policy change will have no effect on property prices. However, more than one third (34 per cent) of investors believe that property prices will decline, three times more than the proportion who feel that prices could rise as a result.

Impact on rental property rent

Nearly two-thirds (68 per cent) of investors stated that they will increase rents to some extent if this policy was

implemented, with 47 per cent of investors planning to increase rents by more than 3 per cent.

Using an insulation or heating grant for residential properties

More than half of investors (56 per cent) stated that they are not interested in using the proposed insulation or heating grant as they believe their properties are already up to an adequate standard.

Housing affordability income levels vs rental and sales prices

Across New Zealand the proportion of income spent on rent has remained relatively stable over the last 6 years, this trend is also consistent in Auckland. In Auckland, affordability decreased substantially between 2011-2015, anecdotally consistent with the Auckland housing market boom.

Fox narrowly missed cut

bronze: The Howick Pakuranga squad fared exceptionally well at the Netball NZ U17 championships finishing third.

ellington Black A have kept two hands firmly on the Anna Rowberry Cup for a second year, beating perennial rivals Auckland 1 in the final of the 2017 Netball NZ U17 Champs played at the Pukekohe Netball Centre. Playing outdoors but undercover, before an enthusiastic crowd of 400, the defending champions Wellington A Black surged ahead in the third quarter of the final, and had to fend off a final charge by Auckland 1, to win 34-25. Wellington’s assistant coach Irene van Dyk attributed the victory to a special harmony in the team. “We didn’t have a full squad until the week before the tournament, with two players in the Beko [Netball] League, and others fulfilling commitments to other sports. But they all worked so hard to bring it together, which showed the harmony in this amazing team,” she said. Wellington had been pushed hard in the morning’s semi-final clash, by the young Howick Pakuranga team

of predominantly Year 11 players; the capital side eventually winning 29-22. Auckland had a more comfortable run into the final, beating Christchurch 54-26. The Aucklanders took an early lead in the final, with goal shoot Bianca Nagaiya shooting well. But Wellington put pressure on late in the quarter, forcing Auckland into unnecessary errors, to close the gap to 7-5 in Auckland’s favour. Van Dyk gave the Wellington side a rousing pep-talk, and they responded by contesting every ball and snatching the lead. Auckland had adapted by the end of the quarter, but Wellington held onto their advantage, 13-12, at halftime. A wall of defence across court from Wellington gave them a formidable restart. Wing attack Salote Taufa deftly fed shooter Saviour Tui, for Wellington to score six unanswered goals in the third quarter, and lead 26-17 going into the final spell. Although Auckland rallied, Welling-

ton maintained their intensity to take the win for the second year running. Howick Pakuranga took out third place with a 29-16 victory over Christchurch. The four-day outdoor tournament is the largest event on Netball New Zealand’s calendar, featuring 38 teams and more than 450 talented young players from throughout the country.

Top baseball prospects head to Aussie Four of New Zealand’s top baseball prospects head to the Gold Coast in Australia next week, and a strong showing at the 10-day long Major League Baseball academy could be their first step towards an education or career in the sport. Or both. New Zealand Diamondblacks pitcher Kyle Glogoski (Howick College) will be joined by Elliot Johnstone (Sacred Heart College), Yuuki Takahashi (North Shore City) and Ciaran Palmer (Victoria, Australia) from 28 July to 9 August for intense coaching, training and playing alongside the best young players in Australia and the wider region. “Having been to the academy last year, I

know how it works and am excited to be part of it again,” said HowickPakuranga pitcher Johnstone, who is also the current Baseball New Zealand U19 Player of the Year. Of the four players headed to the Gold Coast, only Takahashi will be attending his first academy, with Palmer and Johnstone heading to their second, while Glogoski, will be heading to an academy for a third time. “I’m really looking forward to going this year and catching up with some of the friends I have met and played with and against previously,” said Glogoski. This year has already been another big one for the 18-year-old pitcher who performed

Glogoski definitely sees the academy as another step forward in his career. “It’s another chance to put myself in front of a lot of highlevel coaches and scouts who can really help me improve my pitching game and take it to the next level,” he said.

The academy participants will be split into two teams for the 10-day academy and the four Kiwis will likely be split into the two groups and will play each other most days. The learning opportunities and pathways for the nation’s young baseball players are steadily opening up across the globe, as this year there are well over a dozen young Kiwis either playing professional or college baseball in addition to the four players heading to the Gold Coast as they bid to play at the highest level in the sport. “These young men have worked tirelessly on the diamond and off to get chances like this,” said Baseball New Zealand

Beachlands’ pro golfer Ryan Fox and fellow Kiwi Michael Hendry missed the cut at the British Open on Saturday. US golfer Jordan Spieth, 23, won the Claret Jug after overcoming a rocky start on Sunday, shooting a 69 to finish 12-under and claim his first title at the tournament and making it his third major. Windy and challenging conditions put the world’s best players to the test during round two at Royal Birkdale in northwest England on Friday (Saturday NZ time), Stuff reported. Fox opened with a four-over par 74 and shot a respectable two-over to finish at six-over for the tournament but it was not enough to finish an agonising one shot below the eventual cut-line at five-over. Day two was more of a battle for Hendry, who started at three-over but struggled his way to a seven-over 77 to finish at 10-over.

All eyes on prem development squad Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s premier’s season is over following its 31-14 loss to Grammar TEC in the prems semi-finals on Saturday. “It’s just the reality of where our team is,” prems coach Pita Alatini said. “We will review the season in the coming weeks and then look to work hard over the off and preseason.” The prems will support the premier development squad which plays in the final against Ponsonby at Pakuranga at 12.45pm on Saturday.

Likely NZ Super final H

ome advantage should help the Crusaders win their Super Rugby semi-final against the Chiefs on Saturday, but I doubt it will give the Lions the edge they hope for against the visiting Hurricanes in Johannesburg on Sunday. When it came down to the nitty gritty on a rain-soaked Christchurch turf last weekend the Crusaders forward pack, with seven starting All Blacks, carried too much for the brave but outgunned Highlanders with a 17-0 victory. Although the Crusaders were kept scoreless in the second half, their tight defence and the slow track bogged down the attacking threat posed by champion Highlander game-breakers Ben Smith and Waisake Naholo. That could also be the fate of Aaron Cruden, Damian McKenzie and James Lowe this Saturday night unless Brodie Retallick and Ben Cane can inspire the Chiefs forwards to achieve something close to parity against the Crusaders mean machine. Owen Franks and Joe Moody don’t rate as champion ball carrying props, but they are tremendous scrummagers and stout tacklers who never shirk the hard yakka. As a leader who has taken over

from All Black Kieran Read as captain of the Crusaders, gifted lock Sam Whitelock has performed tremendously well. With Ryan Crotty and Isaac Luke the experienced hands of the backline, the development of young Richie Mo’unga, Jack Goodhew, George Bridges and David Havili has been a revelation. But with Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Cruden, Lowe and highly regarded coach Dave Rennie accepting lucrative offers to move overseas, the Chiefs are eager to give them the perfect farewell. Certainly they are better than their 17-11 quarter-final result against the Stormers suggests. However that long flight home from Cape Town and a heavy track could take its toll against a resolute Crusaders outfit who take no prisoners. Much as I admire the Lions break away from South Africa’s traditional power game to embrace 15-man rugby, it will be a tragedy if they win this year’s championship. The reason is they have made the semi-finals without facing one New Zealand team. Furthermore, they can count themselves lucky to have got there after Sharks fullback Lwazi Mvovo gifted them their quarter-

Agnew’s Angle final when his blatant offside in the dying minutes allowed Ryan Combrinck to convert a magnificent 55m penalty for a narrow 23-21 victory. A minute earlier fullback Mvovo was caught in possession when trying to run the ball when a kick deep into the Lions 22 would have earned his team an upset win on the back of a strong forward performance. The Lions are better than that. But they face a much more dangerous backline in a Hurricanes side that boasts All Blacks TJ Perenara, the Barrett brothers, Julian Savea and Nehe MilnerSkudder. Interestingly it was non-All Black right wing Wes Goosen with his two tries, the first of which was a glorious sidestepping burst past three defenders, who was the star performer in the team’s 35-16 away win against the Brumbies. That Goosen can keep 2011 World Cup star Cory Jane out of the starting 15 says much for

Enrol now and take advantage of discount rates for paying a term in advance (see next column). Parents should note that NCEA students are doing ongoing internal assessments during the term which count for credits in exactly the same way as do end of year exams so these should be taken very seriously, espacially by those students seeking merits and excellences. Enrol now to do practice tests and to find out what the examiners are looking for when you write your answers.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
