ong-standing Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson has announced that he will not seek re-election next year. The Times understands Mr Williamson will take up an overseas posting. He could not be contacted to confirm this by deadline, however. “I thank the people of the Pakuranga electorate who have so generously supported me for the past 30 years,” the National MP said on Tuesday morning in a statement. “Their tremendous support has never been taken for granted and I have always known that I needed

to earn each and every vote. “I particularly appreciated their continued loyal support after the introduction of MMP in 1996, which enabled voters to support a political party but not necessarily that party’s candidate.”Mr Williamson was a Minister for 15 of his 30 years as MP for Pakuranga and said on Tuesday that it had been a “privilege”. He was a key protagonist for the fight to have the Local Government Commission’s choice of Te Irirangi Ward changed to Howick in June 2010, before the Auckland Council was formed the following October. He chaired a public meeting which was followed by an online poll run by the Times.

Mr Williamson and the then Botany MP, Pansy Wong, took the battle to Parliament on behalf of the people and Local Government Minister Rodney Hide’s supplementary order paper to change the name to Howick Ward won the day. In 2013, Mr Williamson made international headlines following his “big gay rainbow” speech in Parliament. He made the speech during the debate for same-sex marriage, which he supported. A video of the speech went viral online and he was invited by US comedian Ellen DeGeneres to be on her day-time talk show. He later declined. He then briefly considered run-

ning for Auckland Mayor in 2013, according to reports at the time. Mr Williamson was also frequently in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. He resigned as a Minister in 2014 after it was publicly revealed he had contacted a senior police officer regarding an investigation into a wealthy businessman charged with assault. Donghua Liu initially pleaded guilty to criminal charges of assaulting a woman and assault with intent to injure during an appearance in the Auckland District Court. However he later withdrew his admissions and the domestic ➤ Turn to Page 3

(If you’re hit by a slow-moving tourist attraction you deserve it). I was up there in the Bay of Islands last weekend. There were no warning bells or traffic cones or officials with flags. And as far as I could see, there were no people hiding in the shadows wringing their hands at the notion that a locomotive and carriages from a bygone era could just push its way through town six or eight times a day. It’s winter up there. No one seemed to have told the visitors. Sure, it wasn’t bustling like it would in the

It looks grim there, not helped by the tumultuous effects of intermittent industrial action at the meatworks Affco Moerewa. Let’s talk about the Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangarei, half an hour south. It’s named for the late Austrian artist Frederick Hundertwasser – builder of the amazing toilets in Kawakawa. He suggested the art centre design, which would transform the former Northland Harbour Board building in the Town Basin, in 2003. More than 20 years after

There is a drive on to put Howick on the tourist map. This has shifted from concept plans to handson work (Howick and Pakuranga Times, July 14). I just hope we don’t drag our hands on this. I sincerely hope we get behind Charmaine Chapman and the Howick Tourism Incorporated and Howick Village Business Association teams. If our economy gets a boost from tourism dollars, we’re all winners.

inception, the centre, with Wairau Maori Art Gallery, is scheduled to open by 2019. Fundraising is currently underway, with more than $16 million needed before construction can be started in mid-2017. The story of the art centre has been complex and often controversial. But everyone’s on board now. The Government too has chucked in $4m on the basis that this project is part of the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Plan. Around 70 people will work on the centre’s construction and 30 people will be needed to operate it. The centre is estimated to bring an addition $3.7m into the Northland economy. It needs these projects, and more. And so do we don’t we?

warmer months, but the main street was a hive of activity and people were paying their $20 for the train trip (not many admittedly, but they were still turning up). Kawakawa is pro-actively pushing to not only stay alive but to thrive, to be part of the Bay of Islands tourist cog – and why shouldn’t it? It is the gateway to that beautiful part of New Zealand. Their battle – and it has been a battle I understand – has been not just with bureaucrats but with some within the community resisting things like the train. That train brings people in, it is a unique selling point. I can think of just three places in New Zealand where you can do this. The shopping strip on

Independent joins V & V team By Marianne Kelly

eteran local body politician Bob Wichman has abandoned his traditionally independent status to join the Vision & Voice Botany sub-division ticket in the upcoming Howick Local Board elections. “I have spent the last three years on the board and have realised that my philosophy is similar to theirs [Vision & Voice]. They work well as a team and I see advantages for me in that. “Being independent is fine if you get a majority vote as an independent. But ever since I have come on the board I have been impressed with the way they work. Their hearts and souls are in the right place.” Mr Wichman has a strong track record, having spent 17 years as a Manukau City councillor, 12 years on the Manukau District Health Board, and then a three-year gap before his election to the Howick Local Board as an independent for the current term. “I enjoy local board politics and helping to make decisions,” he says. “And I try to save the ratepayer a dollar. “Botany is growing all the time. It’s a nice community. I have lived here for 12 years and it’s good to be part of something new and exciting.” With a reputation of keeping his eye on what ratepayers’ money is spent on, Mr Wichman says spending by councils could be better. “The bureaucracy, in my opinion, is there to create work for itself. I’m concerned

about saving money,” he says. “I’ve run my own business for 52 years and I did not get there by throwing money away. But that doesn’t mean that I’m mean or tight.” He promises that if reelected he will keep up the pressure on the money spend. “The current board members all have the same ideas as me. They are all working people and want to see good value for the dollar.” Personal safety is a big issue on his agenda, he says. “At the end of the day if people are not safe in the community they have got absolutely nothing. It’s a shame that some people in the community seem to want to ruin things for everyone else. They don’t understand that the damage they do has to be paid for.” Lucy Schwaner is making a third bid for the local board

on the Botany Vision & Voice team. It’s her fourth in local government, having served for a term on the previous Botany Community Board. She’s keen to see Botany developments underway get closer to completion, such as the Ormiston library and arts and community centre which are still in the planning and design stage. “It’s groundbreaking and exciting,” she says. “I can’t wait and I hope the architects come up with something that is innovative.” Another Botany issue close to her heart is a stock-take of community facilities owned by the council and the wider community. “We hear a lot in Botany about no space or facilities for community facilities. But I think they will be surprised when they see how much we’ve got which will include non-council

facilities such as schools and churches.” A highlight of the current term, she says was the opening of Matariki, the rebuilt whare at the Emilia Maud Nixon Garden of Memories in Howick, and also the completion of the first stage of the Uxbridge Arts and Culture centre. She lists a personal highlight as the birth of her and her husband, Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross’s daughter Charlotte during the term. “I am thankful that I am able to continue my role on the local board while also looking after our daughter. “I always intended to stand again because I can offer a different point of view compared with the norm. Being younger we have a different view. But I like to think I have a common sense approach as well.”

violence charges were dropped last year. He was granted New Zealand citizenship in 2010 after his application was supported by Mr Williamson and then Auckland Mayor John Banks. Mr Williamson has also come under fire over the years for making inappropriate comments and jokes, some of which

were considered sexist and racist. Despite standing down from his Government portfolios on May 1, 2014, Mr Williamson stayed on in Parliament as MP for Pakuranga and was re-elected in the September 2014 general election. Since entering Parliament in 1987, he has served as Minister of Local Government,

Small Business, Communications, Broadcasting, Transport, Research, Science and Technology, Statistics, Building and Construction, Land Information, and Information Technology. Mr Williamson is currently a member of the Education and Science Committee and a member of the Transport and Industrial Relations Committee.

Peter Young was just pipped at the post for a seat on the Howick Local Board’s Botany subdivision at the last election. This year he’s pulling out all the stops standing again on the Vision & Voice ticket. “I am pleased to be on the Vision & Voice team” he says, “I hope that people who voted for me will support me again.” He’s also working hard to pull more of the Chinese vote. Two weeks before he held a recent public meeting he ran a community survey which got a 90 per cent response from Chinese people, he says, indicating new migrants’ concerns. Mr Young settled in New Zealand from Hong Kong 26 years ago. He is a former president of the Buddha’s Light International Association NZ and senior adviser of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple of which he was a founder. He’s also been a JP since 2008. “Botany has the largest number of new migrants in the ward and I can help them as a Howick Local Board member,” he says. “I am encouraging people to vote because mainland Chinese people are not used to it [democratic electoral systems].” Burglary was a major concern about safety among respondents to the survey, along with the need for additional pedestrian islands between dangerous sections of road. Many were concerned about waiting times for health appointments and transport to get to them, and a number asked for increased emergency services. Respondents said they wanted a community centre for young people and more focus on education day care for children and for seniors. Public facilities needed included a swimming pool and an indoor stadium. And 58 per cent of respondents said the rates were too high. “Many people also tell me there are not enough facilities at Barry Curtis Park,” Mr Young says. “Elderly people like to go there but there is nowhere to hide from the rain. More covered places are needed where they can do their tai chi exercises, talking and dancing. “Younger people tell me they need an all-weather soccer field in Botany.” Mr Young says he intends to work hard for Botany residents if elected. “This area is growing fast and needs more facilities,” he says. “I want to serve the area and the people and make the next generation happy. I would like to see them learn the New Zealand way and become real New Zealanders.”

Brave model says it’s time to speak up By Farida Master

T

amsyn Cornwall has kept a secret for most of her life. The 26-year-old model and bikini designer - one of the 20 selected contestants for Miss Universe - has been suffering from Crohn’s Disease since she was just eight. While intense fatigue, pain and an upset stomach have been an intrinsic part of her daily life, the former Macleans College student says she now wants more people to be aware of unseen illnesses. “I used to be very embarrassed about telling people that I suffer from an autoimmune disease. This is a very emotional topic because I am not able to do so many things I want to,” she says getting a little weteyed, as she talks about giving up her marketing job at a Fiji resort due to poor health. Tamsyn says it was tough leaving a job she enjoyed but she had to return to New Zealand when the symptoms got out of hand and she had to be hospitalised. On steroids for many years, she says the strong medication has helped her control the symptoms. Unable to work regular long hours, she took up to designing a bikini line, ‘Pixiekini’.

attitude: Miss Universe NZ contestant Tamsyn Cornwall is all set to put her best foot forward for the Photo supplied biggest event of her life.

“A lot of my friends didn’t understand why I often opted out of planned activities. And I found it difficult to explain it at that time,” she says. “I want to create more awareness for people to be kinder to those suffering from unseen illnesses.” It’s one of the reasons why Tamsyn has decided to give it a public profile as she discussed her suffering from Crohn’s disease for the first time on social media and got a lot of support. She has taken to the catwalk

two years running for Fiji Fashion Week and New Zealand Fashion Week while modelling for lots of other local brands. Tamsyn, once a child model for Farmers store, says despite the illness, she always had a vision board. “It’s my positive attitude and putting my vision out there in the universe that has enabled me to achieve my goal of contesting for Miss Universe,” says the Mellons Bay resident. Once shortlisted from 300 aspiring beauty queens, Tamsyn was invited to be part of the Stiletto camp, a three-day workshop focussing on modelling, dancing, nutrition, makeup and media training. Tamsyn is thrilled to be one of the top 20 contestants selected from the camp, a prelude to the big event. She is looking forward to the retreat they are heading to in the Philippines. Meanwhile, the Instagram model is working on custommade crochet bikini tops for all the 20 contestants. She is equally busy planning a fundraiser for the children’s charity Variety. The grand finals for Miss Universe NZ will be held at SkyCity on September 3. The winner will represent Miss Universe in Las Vegas.

Eighteen finalists were announced last week for what is arguably the world’s most prestigious business awards. “It’s an honour to be recognised among such an amazing group of business people. I’m in great company,” Mrs Patel says. The Nirvana story began in 1977 when Mrs Patel and her husband Dr Kantilal Patel took over a solo GP clinic in Otara. Today their brand of health provision is delivered through affiliated general practices, urgent care clinics, specialist centres, occupational health clinics and pharmacies. Nirvana Health Group has more than 55 sites across New Zealand and Australia, and serves more than 1 million customers a year. As well as recent work focusing on women’s leadership, one of Mrs Patel’s note-worthy initiatives is the creation of Gandhi Nivas, a programme focussed on ground-breaking early intervention to end domestic violence. She identified that four out of 14 women killed from family violence were Indian and accounted for 55 per cent of protection orders breached. Keeping it personal at Pakuranga College I f you speak about learning to any of the teachers at Pakuranga College, they are likely to tell you the same thing: “We are student centred”. As a parent, this sounds great, but what does it actually mean?

Principal Mike Williams explains. “Our students’ learning needs and welfare are at the heart of our decision making. We believe that positive relationships are the foundation for effective learning and we aim to be actively involved with parents and students when it comes to each child’s learning.” As parents we want the best opportunities for our children, but it is also important that they are treated as an individual. When I asked Mr Williams about this, he agreed: “At Pakuranga College, learning is ‘holistic’. Our teachers provide current and relevant contexts for learning that capture the students’ imagination. It is about developing the whole person – their academic, social and emotional development”. He went on to point out: “We are, of course, proud of our results; particularly with the number of students who gain Merit and Excellence endorsements.” Indeed, Pakuranga College achieves well above the national average in NCEA and university entrance and has a solid record of scholarships, including New Zealand Top Scholar and Outstanding Scholar awards.

Mr Williams, however, was keen to highlight that the college “is not only about teaching subjects. Learning, and ‘learning how to learn’ is the focus.” He added, “We strive to empower students to develop responsibility for their own learning. Our aim is to equip them to meet the challenges of their future lives and careers.” As one of the first high schools in Auckland to introduce a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ policy to enhance and personalise student learning, Pakuranga College has established itself as a national leader in eLearning. ERO recently described the school as “forward thinking and future focussed” and observed that “Innovation to benefit student learning continues as one of the hallmarks of (the college)”. Pakuranga College’s wide ranging curriculum is complemented by an impressive number of co-curricular activities, with opportunities available in everything from culture and leadership to sport and the arts. “It is thanks to our amazing staff that we are able to offer such a range of opportunities”, said Mr Williams, “we are also constantly investing in our facilities.” Evidence of this can be seen in the recently completed remodelling of the Visual Arts building and a brand new $4m double gymnasium, which will open later this year.

It’s politics, but not as we know it The US party conventions have been eye-openers

N

ew Zealanders don’t do politics on anywhere near the scale of the Americans. It’s tough, it’s brutal, it often focuses on sound bites, and the world watches on, concerned about where it’s all headed. I’m currently in the USA with a colleague, Todd Muller, of Bay of Plenty. We have both been privileged to be invited as guests to the Republican and Democratic national conventions. At the time of writing, the Republican Convention has just concluded, and the Democratic one is starting. While the primary purpose of this visit is to build relationships with US politicians and other international visitors, watching the phenomena of the two American political machines, preparing two people for the highest office in the land, is eye-opening. There are two big political issues about the US that we don’t typically understand back home. Firstly, US political parties are not anyway as unified and well-led as NZ parties. They are divided, they battle it out internally on a regular basis, and each successful presidential candidate has had to burn

ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany as many bridges as they’ve tried to build. The second contention to consider is that Hillary Clinton is not guaranteed to win the presidency. There is a real (and concerning) possibility that Donald Trump may cross the finish line. His policy prescriptions are insular, revolve around attacking many interests groups, and they cause grave concern amongst governments the world over. But there’s still a chance that he could triumph. Both Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump are also deeply unpopular and divisive characters. We have been astonished by the sheer hatred many Americans have for either or both of them. Whoever wins will be taking office with very low approval ratings and will have a near impossible task to bridge to the other side. From the view point of

Republican insiders that we have been able to connect with, Mr Trump may be the lesser of two evils to them, but he is very far from a perfect or mainstream candidate. From a NZ point of view, we have a long standing interest in achieving greater trading relationships with the US. Right now we are in a good space with the Obama administration that must continue if we want to see trade barriers removed and economic doors open up. One can only hope that the election year rhetoric we have seen in the campaigns is not reflected in how either will govern, should they be elected. While watching politics in the US up close and personal can be fascinating, it really does remind us how fortunate we are to be New Zealanders. Compared to our American friends, we are a stable nation, free from great political extremes, and our representatives all get along relatively well. The Kiwi way is far from the American way. Each has its strengths, but I know which I prefer. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Sixty years of ministry for priest F

ounding parish priest of St Mark’s Church and School in Pakuranga, Monsignor Raymond Green, recently celebrated a special Mass to mark 60 years of ordination to the priesthood. The priest, who is currently Emeritus Pastor at Owairaka Catholic Church, turns 90 in October. Joining him for the Mass last week was the Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Patrick Dunn; Christ the King Church parish priest, Reverend Peter Tipene and Deacon Jana Nair; parish priest of St Patrick’s Parish, Panmure, Reverend Michael Endemann; and parishioners from St Mark’s Parish, Pakuranga. Mons. Green was ordained by Archbishop Liston at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland . When, 45 years ago, Bishop Reginald Delargey entrusted a new parish to be formed around priest Ray Green, the site of the large Pakuranga church with its school was a farm with a derelict farmhouse and an old cowshed. The humble priest, a former plumber, started Masses in Edgewater College Hall. All the chairs had to be put out

and returned after every Mass. To save money, Father Green shifted into the old farmhouse which was described as not fit for human habitation. It had brambles growing through the walls and vermin. Father Green transformed the cowshed into a beautiful chapel which always had a Bethlehem-Christmas feel to it. The Church of St Mark’s was opened in 1971, then the school, a parish centre and finally the Presbytery. Mons. Green started his time

as an assistant priest who rode a bicycle. Among his destinations was Greenlane Hospital where he served the patients, particularly the dying. Mons. Green recalls that the nurse at the hospital wondered who would die first – the patient or the young priest! While at Pakuranga, Father Green was invited to preach at St Kentigern College by the then Presbyterian minister and his wife. He began meetings at the Baptist Church and was also invited to preach for the Brethren Church.

Moving songs on programme German soprano Christiane Libor makes her debut with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) in the next Masterworks series. She will sing the Strauss work Four Last Songs with the orchestra, along with the other concert masterwork, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. It will be an ideal continuation from the inaugural performance of music director Edo de Waart who conducted Mahler’s momentous Third Symphony in April. Symphony No.3, composed between 1893 and 1896, has music scored for children’s and women’s choir, mezzosoprano soloist and a full orchestra, whereas Symphony No. 4, composed

in 1899 and 1900, is scored for a modest orchestra, with no trombones or tuba, and a soprano soloist. Despite the obvious differences, Mahler’s Symphony No 3 deeply informs the Fourth, Mr de Waart says. “Mahler was an expert at re-purposing themes across his works and this is evident in these consecutive symphonies. “If you want to call yourself a Mahler Orchestra, then his Symphony No. 4 is very much at the centre of that,” he says. ■■ The NZSO will perform the next in its Masterworks series at 7pm on August 5 at the ASB Theatre, Auckland Central.

Charity begins at a young age A

s part of Matariki celebration this year, Lollipops Educare at Botany Junction and Botany Town Centre (BTC) took the initiative of encouraging a traditional Maori cultural practise of Taa Koha. “It is about giving what you can spare to those in need,” said Marjorie Mackey supervisor at Lollipops Educare Botany Junction as they arrived at The Salvation Army office on Wellington Street, Howick with loads of yummy packaged food. There was a lot of activity as vol-

unteers prepared for a community lunch on Friday afternoon at The Salvation Army where the lonely and hungry can avail of a hearty lunch for just a gold coin donation. Representing their class of Rising Fives were four-year-olds Skyla Yandall, Ansh Parkash, Mila Hockly and Ivan Sun along with three-year-old Yashua Londhe handed over baskets of goodies — whilst supervisors Yvette Viljoen from the childcare centre in BTC and Ms Mackey wheeled in carton loads of food stuff for the Salvation Army food bank.

“This is for those all the people who have no food to eat,” said little Skyla. Receiving the super tots with a plateful of chips and cookies were Lieutenants Ameet and Jessica Londhe who took the children around the food bank and explained to them how it works. giving: Lollipops Educare Botany Junction students Ansh Prakash (left to right), Mila Hockly, Skyla Yandall, Ivan Sun and Yashua Londhe celebrate the art of giving as they donate packaged food to The Salvation Army food bank. Making their own music

clever: Pakuranga College technology students Cullen Spence, Mathew Spencer, Dean Hoo, Andrea Twyman and Tiana Hunt have made their own ukuleles. Photo supplied

Four years ago, technology teacher Theo Blaauw came up with the idea of students making ukeleles as an alternative to boxes and mechanical toys. At the time, he had no idea that it would become so popular, but word got around and each year he now has a long list of junior students wanting to take part in the course, which now has 54 participants. The concept fits the curriculum perfectly, as it provides Year 10 students with the opportunity to complete a theoretical book covering all aspects of technology, from research, concepts, planning, practical ability to final evaluation. Mr Blaauw says: “It is a practical, hands-on project where they learn the expertise of using power and hand

tools to create an article of value. To many, it ties in with their cultural roots as well.” The students’ designs seem to be inspired by a wide range of ideas. Year 10 student Andrew Twyman has used quotes from songs by her favourite band ‘La Dispute’ to decorate her instrument while Cullen Spence was inspired by his love of snakes. Ocean themes are also common, with the ukeleles often taking the shape of manta or sting rays. So does Mr Blaauw have any ukeleles of his own? “Yes, I do have over thirty of my own, many with paua/abalone/ mother-of-pearl inlays of eagles, dragons, etc. I have also been playing with a group every Monday evening for the past three years at Picton Centre in Howick,” he says.

Golden effort good timing for worlds By Scott Yeoman

H

owick College’s Jordan Nathan-Welch is in good form leading up to the World Taekwondo Junior Championships in Canada after winning gold in Australia at the weekend. The 16-year-old from Whitford, fighting for the New Zealand national team, won the under 73kg Juniors section at the WTF President’s Cup – Oceania Region in the early hours of Sunday morning in Canberra. It was the biggest win of Jordan’s career so far and was a junior G-2 world ranking event. “It was pretty massive for me,” the quiet and seemingly shy year 12 student said of his Australian triumph. Starting at 9am last Saturday, he won three fights in a row to make it to the final, which started at 1.30am the following morning. The Times caught up with Jordan and his coach this week at a taekwondo gym in Mount Wellington, where the young athlete – his body still sore from the weekend – was slowly getting back into training. His coach, Master Dafydd Sanders, was happy to talk through the drama of Jordan’s gold medal fight. He was eight points down going into the last round. “It’s after 1am in the morning, the guy has obviously worked hard to get an eight point lead,” Sanders said. “But there’s one more round left and we’ve come all the way to here; we are going to work and work and work until the final second.” Jordan fought his way back by never getting too far ahead

of himself, Sanders said. “He just focused on what he needed to do each step of the way. “[The fact] he was down on points – he wasn’t worried about it, he was just worried about the things we’ve been training and what he needed to do in that moment. So he just took every step and did it the best he could.” One of the key moments in the final round was when Jordan executed a “scorpion kick” on his opponent. “The kick goes up the back and scores off the back of the head,” Sanders explained. Jordan went on to take the lead and win. He said it first occurred to

him that he could go the whole way at about 12am in the morning, after the third fight. “Everyone was like, ‘Ok Jordan, you have to get gold. There’s no point in waiting here all day not to try and go for gold.’” Asked how he was feeling after his gold medal win, he sighed. “Just relieved.” Anything else on your mind at the time? “Food. My stomach was screaming at me.” His main goal is winning gold at the World Taekwondo Junior Championships in Burnaby, British Columbia in November. Sanders said he believes Jordan could be the first Kiwi to win gold at the event. “A year ago, no one really rated him. But now, since he won the President’s Cup, he’s got a lot more people looking at him. “I think he’s looking good. I think the prospect of New Zealand winning its first medal is good with Jordan.” But for the athlete himself, it’s still one step at a time. He will continue to train after school five or six times a week and focus on the small things. “This will be my last chance for Juniors,” Jordan said with a quiet determination. Meanwhile, Pakuranga’s Harry Glover also returned from Canberra with a medal. The 14-year-old, also fighting for the New Zealand national team, won silver in the under 57kg Cadets section. Harry has qualified for the Oceania Championships in Suva, Fiji in November, as has Jordan and two other local fighters – Martyn Glover (Cadets under 37kg) and Cullen Te Young (Juniors under 63kg).

Love caring for babies and young children? T

he Stems FROM HOME team is continuing to thrive locally and with winter still upon us, they are looking to put the call out for enthusiastic people with a passion for children to support local families with their childcare needs. Founded by teachers Stephany Wofinden and Emma McAlister, the home-based childcare and early childhood organisation has branched out beyond all expectations since its inception in 2011. Working on the premise that when educators are happy, children are happy, Stems invests abundant time and resources in its close-knit team. From the very beginning, educators are given support including initial nursery equipment, along with access to continued resource sharing and support. A big bonus for families as well as Stems members are FREE weekly playgroups which are diverse and varied, giving little ones and educators a chance to socialise and network in a fun, encouraging, family environment. The highly sought-after weekly ‘garden-nature playgroup’ remains popular, as are the music and movement group, weekly gross motor skill development programme at Action Indoor Sports in Pakuranga, and in the summer months, little tots take to the water with pre-school swimming lessons- all offered for FREE.

As part of the educators’ ‘homebased’ individual programmes, the team has access to child first-aid training, regular evening training workshops as well as public liability and statutory liability insurances – all for FREE! And if that’s not enough, educators are supported with an annual resource grant which goes towards more educational material which helps them better run the programmes built around their children’s interests in their own homes. “We have a real mix of educators from trained ECE teachers and mums with their own children, to those who have been involved in alternative careers who have decided to follow their passion and work with babies, toddlers and young children with the solid support of the Stems team,” says Emma. Offering a wealth of benefits for those with their own young families, this career path is a fulfilling and lifechanging one for all who embark on this journey. A man on a mission C

hristian Woodbridge is taking his love of football and sport to a continent that can’t get enough of both. The 18-year-old former Macleans College student leaves for Uganda this month to volunteer in a sport education project at Hebron Junior School in Nalugala Village, Entebbe. Woodbridge, who is from Mellons Bay, will spend six weeks at the school through International Volunteer HQ. He will teach young children sport and help out with other aspects of school life. “The school is in a lot of need and I’m hoping to be able to make a positive impact on the lives of the children,” Woodbridge said. “I know I will gain a lot from this trip too.”

positive: Christian Woodbridge is heading for a small village in Entebbe where he has volunteered Photo supplied his services.

He is currently on a gap year and wants to get some life experience before undertaking further study. He has always played plenty of sport and has excelled at football.

Woodbridge was in the New Zealand Under 17 Football squad that played at the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Chile last year. On July 30 he leaves for Africa. “I haven’t got any nerves at the moment but to be honest I’ve been so busy working to save for the trip that the fact that I’m going hasn’t fully sunk in yet. “As it gets closer to departure I’m sure I’ll have a mix of nerves and excitement.” He has set up a Givealittle account to raise money for Hebron Junior School. Donations will go towards buying international textbooks, stationary, and sports equipment for the school, Woodbridge said. ■■ https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/christianwoodbridge

The Damaging Effects of Forward Head Posture (FHP)

T

he effects of posture on health are becoming more evident. Spinal pain, headaches, moodiness, blood pressure, pulse rate and lung capacity are among the many functions most easily influenced by posture. Many symptoms, including pain, may be moderated or eliminated by improved posture. One of the most common postural problems is Forward Head Posture (FHP). Since we live in a forward facing world, the repetitive use of computers, TV, video games, trauma and even backpacks have forced the body to adapt to a forward head posture. Repetitive movements in a certain direction will strengthen nerve and muscle pathways to move that way more readily and cause postural changes over time. It is the repetition of forward head movements combined with poor postures and/or trauma that causes the body to adapt to a Forward Head Posture. ‘Text neck’ can also be a contributor of FHP. This is the term used to describe the injuries and pain sustained from looking down at mobile phones or other devices for too long. ‘Text neck’ does not occur only from texting, looking down to read also causes this. The symptoms associated with text neck include chronic headaches, upper back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and increased curvature of the spine. Ideally the head should sit directly on the neck and shoulders,

like a golf ball sits on a tee. The weight of the head is more like a bowling ball than a golf ball, so holding it forward, out of alignment, puts a strain on your neck and upper back muscles. The result can be muscle fatigue, an aching neck, pain, burning sensations, jaw tension, headaches and bite problems. When spinal tissues are subjected to a significant load for sustained periods of time, they deform and undergo remodelling changes that could become permanent. Overtime FHP has been shown to flatten the normal neck curve, resulting in disc compression and damage, and early arthritis of the spine. Remember, long standing postural problems like FHP will cause spine and nerve damage, and symptoms rarely present early on but rather after several months or years. If you or anyone in your family has FHP, don’t wait until it’s too late!

WARNING SIGNS OF FHP: • Tight muscles • Headaches • Head forward on shoulders • Restricted shoulder and neck movement • Lack of energy • Pins and needles in arms and/or hands • Abnormal bite • Burning sensation in shoulders and neck • Tightness in upper chest • Arm, elbow or wrist pain • Tension in jaw muscles • Increased curvature of the spine

What a sunset One of our long-time readers and well-known business owners sent in this fantastic shot looking from the village to the west. structural and system changes that will mean school operations will look quite different in the coming years. The changes signalled will impact on compliance and reporting for schools, including an even greater emphasis from the Education Review Office on accelerating learning for underachieving students. New data infrastructure will enable closer tracking of individual students and facilitate wider data sharing across government ministries. The intention is to enable funding to be targeted more specifically to those deemed most in need and most at risk of underachieving. Governance changes will allow new Board structures and enable groups of schools to operate together and we are beginning to see this happening now with the formation of Communities of Learning among schools. As part of a Special Education update there will be changes to staffing and funding to schools in an effort to get the administration of resources closer to the end user. Communities of Learning are currently being established across the country and will see schools collaborating even more strongly to help develop

“I just wanted to share this photo of a spectacular sunset as seen from outside my hardware store in Howick a few days ago.” Paul Spiller consistency and to support one another to raise standards. These changes will have far reaching effects on the way in which schools operate and on what they can do. If I have any reservations at the moment they are around the impact that these changes might have on self-management and funding for our schools in the Howick and Pakuranga area. Traditionally, higher decile schools receive less funding from the ministry and I wouldn’t want to see this jeopardised as resources are increasingly directed to others. Likewise, our schools have been well-supported by effective communities through their Boards of Trustees and they are successfully managed. It would be a pity to lose any of the self-determination that has enabled each of our school communities thrive. I will be watching and engaging with interest as these massive changes unfold – as always the devil will be in the detail and it will be up to school leaders and teachers, with the support of our communities, to get maximum benefit for our children. I really liked the way Marianne Kelly wrote her article (Times, July 21) on speed cameras. She was clearly impartial and fair and explained the NZ Police position well. However, the person who was complaining about getting pinged by a static camera was from the “poor me” variety. Just in case he/she didn’t get the message from getting three tickets for the same offence at the same spot, here are a few pointers to stop getting them. 1. Don’t blame the cars for gathering speed going downhill. All vehicles are fitted with brakes and gears for controlling speed. 2. V ehicles don’t need to get ready to go uphill. That is why an accelerator is used. 3. U nless your vehicle is a trolley, why are you talking about getting ready to go uphill by gathering speed on the downhill approach? 4. M ost people learn by mistakes. Surely after the first ticket, he/she should have learnt not to do it again. 5. T rial and error learning should not apply to following basic road code rules that was part of getting a driver’s license. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes and consider how you would feel if you or one of your loved ones got hurt or killed on this stretch of road. How would you feel if you killed or hurt someone because you were speeding? This stretch of road is dangerous, with the NZ Police knowing this, and acting appropriately, by placing the static camera there for just that reason. I know that this stretch of road doesn’t have many pedestrians, but they are allowed to be there and there are driveways and side roads that exit onto Murphy’s Road. No sympathy from me! Giving to fight poverty By Scott Yeoman A group of Botany high school students have worked through their holiday break to drum up support for Kiwi kids in need. Morganne Meredith, 18, Rayner Clarke, 17, Harmit Grewal, 17, and TJ Lemafa, 17, aim to target child poverty in south Auckland by providing students with some of the basic tools necessary for a New Zealand education. The four Botany Downs Secondary College students want to supply free backpacks to as many students as possible at low decile primary schools, with each bag containing a raincoat, exercise books and stationary. The project is called GiveBack. Group leader Morganne said they’ll be targeting “one school at a time”

and will be making sure none of the students miss out. “Education is a major factor in bringing change to the cycle of poverty,” she said. GiveBack is the group’s entry into the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme – a year-long programme that challenges high school students around the country to make and market a product or business. Morganne said they wanted to do something different and focus on a cause rather than a profit-making business. “So we decided to look at all the issues in New Zealand and we [chose] child poverty, mainly because we’re at school and we wanted to focus on something to do with education.” The GiveBack project started in March.

teve Slipper opened the doors of his business in April 1996, founding a business that has grown into one of the largest lawn, heating and leisure equipment sales and service outlets in the region. These days Steve’s business in Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga, is known as Lawn Heat & Leisure. He took the plunge after working as a diesel mechanic/ engineer at one company for 13 years when one of the former original Lawn Boys franchises came on the market. “I was living in Bucklands Beach and knew the business,” he says. “It had been in the area for more than 60 years. It was an institution.” The name was changed to Lawn Heat & Cycle, but a couple of years later he decided that the bike business was not for him. “It was a seasonal thing and very hard unless we were carrying masses of stock,” he says. So Steve changed the company name to Lawn Heat until, in 2002, the next door business, Aquarius Leisure, a pool and spa outlet, became available when the owner retired. “We had customers who would go to them and then come next door to here. So it was another string to our bow

I ended up coming up here again,” she smiles. Currently studying in Year 11 at Howick College, also the same college that Parris studied at, Azul now lives with Parris’ aunt and studio manager Robina Siteine in Howick. She danced every day after school for three hours and for eight hours every day in the current school holiday break. “It is closer to the World Championship which is in three weeks. enrolled at Somerville Intermediate School (the international dancer-choreographer’s former school). She lived for six months with Parris’ family at their Flat Bush home. “After the World Championship in Vegas where our crew came second, I went back to Mexico. Parris’ family was really nice and looked after me very well,” she says. Once back home in Mexico, Azul realised there is no one with the same standing as the three-time international World Hip Hop Dance champion, Parris who is also the creator of Polyswag that combines sassy woman fire with aggressive inner strength. In February this year, Azul, now 15, returned to Auckland for two weeks with her dad to

hen 12-year-old Azul Fernanda Ulloa Ocana told her mum that she wanted to go half way across the world - from Mexico to New Zealand -to audition for a dance competition, her mother wouldn’t hear of it. Her mum thought she was crazy! Not many people know their calling at that age but Azul knew she had to be a part of the world-famous dance crew the Royal Family at the Palace Dance Studio, the minute she saw the auditions held by the global hip hop dancer Parris Goebel on Facebook. “I didn’t know if I was ready for it, if it was my destiny...but I told my dad how badly I wanted it and he supported me. I said it is my biggest dream and I don’t want to live wondering what would have happened if I don’t go to New Zealand,” says Azul who did this school term at Howick College only so that she can pursue her passion. “My dad came along with me to New Zealand for a week. I auditioned and got selected in the youngest dancing troupe Bubblegum. We soon returned to Mexico to inform my school about my decision.” Azul flew back to New Zealand in a month’s time and then

lose to a third of Kiwis find vacuuming the least favourite of household chores. The figure comes from the latest survey by consumer satisfaction company Canstar Blue. ‘Baby boomers’ are the most likely to not enjoy pushing around a vacuum cleaner (38 per cent) and are also the most likely to have a cleaner who vacuums the house for them (11 per cent). For the 84 per cent of people who vacuum at least once a week, “you can see why this could become one of their more boring chores”, says Canstar New Zealand general manager Jose George. “Thirty-seven per cent of women are vacuuming their homes more than once a week, while just 29 per cent of men can say the same.” Vacuuming frequency included respondents vacuuming daily (11%), more than once a week (33%), weekly (40%), fortnightly (12%), monthly (3%) and less than monthly (1%). Kiwis are well known for the DIY attitude and this is reflected in their cleaning habits with less than 10% of survey respondents opting to hire someone else to clean their home.

Choose flooring suitable for room W

ith so many flooring options out there, here are some tips to steer you in the right direction. For a glamorous style that will be durable as well, the material of choice is marble, vinyl or porcelain tiles. Hardwood, laminate flooring or vinyl planks provide a classic, timeless look. An exotic touch can be introduced with bamboo which is more durable than hardwood and is more resistant to insects and mildew. It’s stylish as well. Vinyl is affordable and easy

to maintain. However, it can show scratches, stains and signs of wear and tear. Laminate floors imitate wood, stone or ceramic. They’re easy to install and are resistant to stains, shocks and scratches. Ceramic tiles aren’t as resistant to damage as other types, such as porcelain. Linoleum is easy to maintain and is extremely resilient. Nowadays it comes in many styles and forms, including biodegradable and hypoallergenic.

Excing Opportunit

If your rooms are on the small side, light colours will make them appear larger and brighter. If you hate cleaning, choose textured surfaces. Matt finishes are also popular. Make sure that the choice of flooring is suitable for the room where it will be laid. For example, laminate flooring and hardwood are unsuitable for bathrooms because of their high humidity levels. Bamboo flooring is increasingly popular in residential homes.

Wood like never before at MC Tiles IN AUGUST Innovative and contemporary, with a vintage feel, Nirvana introduces to the MC Tiles range a new concept of wood-effect tiles, whose elegance lies in the contrasts of the bold hues and the unique character of the product. The primitive ruggedness of living wood is married with the innate elegance and practicality of procelain. This contrasting dualism and the consistency of two parallel worlds bring to life a direct and strikingly unique finish.

here was plenty of local talent on display at Paradice Ice Arena in Botany Downs recently, as the Auckland Ice Figure Skating Club (AIFSC) held its 2016 Club Championships. The competition took place over a Saturday and Sunday and saw some great skating, creative costumes and inspired performances and results. For many it was their first competition of the year and their first chance to showcase new routines. While skaters competing at a higher grade were looking for a technical score high enough to earn them a place

There were some big wins to celebrate and tough losses to reflect on at the Pakuranga United clubrooms at the weekend. The club’s Premier and Premier Reserves sides both lost on Saturday, but a number of other teams picked up important wins. The Pakuranga U21s team will be playing in the final at Eden Park this weekend after beating College Rifles 36-27. The Pakuranga U20s also had a big win, beating Grammar TEC 28-17, and the Pakuranga U85kg Rattlers are off to the finals after beating University 25-3. But the Premier Reserves team, playing in their semi-final at Bell Park, went down 10-16 to Waitemata. The Premiers – playing in the Jubilee Trophy semi-final (for places 5-8) – also lost to Waitemata, 25-28. Meanwhile, the Pakuranga U85kg Taipans lost 5-24 to the Ponsonby Ponies.

The under 18s have their last game of the championship round this weekend, before they face off against Richmond in the semi-final on August 6. The open age restricted 85kg team will also play in their semi-final on August 6. The 16/17 restricted grade team have their semi-final this Saturday

against Mt Albert, and the date for the 12/13 restricted grade team’s semi-final is due to be announced soon. Meanwhile, it has also been a year of individual triumphs for Hornets players. Chanel Harris-Tavita, Dylan Tavita, Sione Tatafu, Keanu LaumatiaPaki and AJ Kepaoa have all been named in the Counties Manukau under

17s side. Harris-Tavita was also called up to play for the Junior Warriors the day he turned 17 and Laumatia-Paki and Dylan Tavita have been training with the Warriors 20s. Laumatia-Paki was also named in the New Zealand Maori under 17 team and took part in a New Zealand Rugby League high performance camp in Rotorua recently,

along with AJ Kepaoa. Junior club captain Denie Allan said the club is excited to be helping so many young men achieve their potential within the sport. “The Hornets has been a family-orientated sports club at the heart of the community since 1961, so a number of local children have grown up being proud Hornets. “We’re grateful to all

Expect a super dogfight E

Hornets in hunt for multiple titles The Howick Hornets rugby league club will be hoping to finish the 2016 season with more than one championship to its name. The club has four semi-finals to look forward to in the next couple of weeks. Despite the Fox Premiers losing 12-18 to the Point Chevalier Pirates at the weekend – making it almost impossible for them to make the top four – four other Hornets teams are still ➤ Turn to Page 27 in with a chance this season.

xpect tough Super Rugby semi-final dogfights when the Hurricanes and Lions host the Chiefs and HIghlanders respectively in Wellington and Johannesburg this weekend. With the Chiefs having to travel from South Africa and the Highlanders flying from Australia, the Hurricanes and Lions should hold a fitness edge over their opponents. But expect a battle royal in both games because the Chiefs have a much better attack than the toothless Sharks and the Highlanders defence is far stronger than the Crusaders who were trounced 42-25 by the rampant Lions in a sad goodbye to coach Todd Blackadder. While PJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett were brilliant in mastering the swirling Wellington wind and rain during the Hurricanes 41-0 triumph of the Sharks, they will be wary of a Chiefs team that walloped the Stormers 60-21. Perenara and Barrett deserved perfect 10s for their latest performance with astute tactical kick-

ing and elusive running and Barrett’s clash with Aaron Cruden in particular should make fascinating viewing. However it hasn’t been just the established All Black superstars who have captured attention this season, but a whole bunch of up-and-comers who have taken all four semi-finalists so far. Like rookie Hurricanes locks Vaea Fifiti and Michael Fatialofa, explosive prop Loni Uhila, second five Willis Halaholo and wing Jason Woodward who, having got a start on the left wing ahead of Julian Savea, set up a try and scored another. The same is true at the Chiefs where fullback Damian McKenzie has been sensational, James Lowe continues to perform like an All Black and Anton Lienert-Brown and Tom Sanders have slotted in seamlessly in covering injuries to key players. There are not many Springboks in the Lions team, but there should be and probably will later this year if their selectors are smart.

Agnew’s Angle Unlike other South African teams who play territorial, physical rugby, the Lions prefer 15-man rugby similar to that of the New Zealand teams. And they have the vision, slick ball skills and pace to succeed at it. Warren Whiteley, Jaco Kriel, Franco Mostert and Malcolm Marx have featured strongly in an aggressive pack and Fat de Kierk and Elton Jantjies have been sharp halves who have served a hard running backline who will severely test the talented Highlanders. Rohan Janse Van Rensburg and Lionel Mapoe are smart, rugged centres who serve a dangerous back three in Ruan Combrinck, Andries Coetzee and Courtnal Skosan. Once again, Aaron Smith, Lima Sopoaga and Ben Smith played leading roles in the narrow 15-9 win

against the Brumbies in Canberra, but it was tenacious defence and several Elliot Dixon lineout steals that clinched the win. More sublime attacking moments from Ben Smith and Waisake Naholo and an improved scrum will be needed to tip the scales against the hungry Lions if they are to stay on track to defend their title. Sadly, at the time of writing, there was a probability that Dane Coles (ribs) and a possibility Sam Cane (concussion) could be ruled out of the semis with Coles injury looking particularly painful. That would be a major shame, for both have been inspirational leaders for the Hurricanes and Chiefs respectively, with Cane sharing the captaincy with Aaron Cruden. If Cane doesn’t start, it will rob fans of the chance to once again compare his game against dynamic fellow All Black Ardie Savea who has become a crowd favourite. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author
