oas Toung climbs the stairs slowly but steadily. Arthritis has taken its toll. She has a pronounced limp, even with two titanium knees. If it bothers her she doesn’t show it. Loas is nearly 84. She is intelligent and speaks with an endearing lilt and could be your gran. But she is lonely. Her husband Chien died in 2001. He was 18 years older, she 46 and he 64 when they married. Last week the Highland Park woman was meant to be re-married to a man she’d never met and purporting to be more than 20 years her junior. She fell for Steve, a man with no surname, no contact phone number that worked, and no address

that seemed to be kosher. Love, it has been said, is blind, as is trust. Loas sheepishly admits she has been royally scammed, ripped off to the tune of almost $8000. She’s another victim of the socalled sweetheart scam and is annoyed she has been fooled. But she readily admits she still takes calls from this character ‘Steve’, one the night before our interview. “I first met Steve in March through a dating site called MeetMe,” she says. “His profile was on the site and, being curious, I clicked into it. He told me he was a Telecom site engineer. We quickly became friends and, after a week or so, his first appeal for funds came.” But Loas didn’t see what was

LOAS TOUNG

happening. She’s a Christian and accepted the appeal for so much money as genuine. “He needed $3000 to pay his workers in a remote part of the

jungle in Malaysia but couldn’t get the money from the main office in KL (Kuala Lumpur). I agreed to send an overseas bank draft to him,” says Loas. “Several weeks later he said he was in dire straits because he hadn’t realised that his visa had expired, so was not allowed to leave the country until it was renewed. “He had run out of funds so was stuck at KL Airport with nothing to eat for four days and was sick and desperate. Could I please send $4500? This I managed to do.” She was truly hooked. “By this time we had established quite a relationship, verging on the romantic. We learned about each other’s lives,” says Loas. ➤ Turn to Page 13

ish fingers remind me of lots of things. Happy moments of dinners long ago. That’s why I bought a pack of these little beauties this week. When cooked correctly, they become golden ingots of deliciousness. I have fresh fish – snapper no less – in the freezer. And some crumbed hoki. I just fancied fingers of fish. For ‘old times’. How disappointed I was. Had they done something to the recipe? Was it the crumb mix? Perhaps my cooking skills ruined them. Or maybe they always tasted like this and my taste buds had matured. Absurd. My point is that sometimes we set ourselves up for a fall. Our expectations go beyond the rational or sane or scientific. But this is a part of the whole jumble we know as the human condition, right? Confident and fearful, strong but frail, knowing but just as dense as a sourdough loaf. Happy and notso-much. Like the moon and the tides, the gamut of human emotion and behaviour ebbs and flows and there’s not a thing we can really do about it – certainly not when dealing with others. But that’s the challenge isn’t it – how we cope with others. It’s that dynamic which make it exciting or perilous or scary or fun. We hear chit-chat about coping mechanisms and suchlike. We know that some of us are hardwired to adapt to our surroundings and the people we encounter. Some of us, well, not so much.

These interactions, of course, do not exclude family. A case in point, teenagers, more precisely, teenage girls. I have one. Her mother lives in Wellington. There is no foil, no cushion, no sounding board immediately to hand. I have learned much since she turned into a teenager (sounds like a vampire or zombie right)? It’s so weird being chastised by a 13-year-old. She’s 14 now and her demeanour seems to have mellowed somewhat. I remind myself not to get too excited as there’s a few years of these raging bloody hormones to come. If a parent whose child was nearing this tender age asked me what it is like having a teen daughter in the house, I would, having checked she was nowhere in earshot, offer my meagre wisdom thusly – it is like trying to walk across a motorway without being hit, whilst trying not to offend the drivers. My approaches have been numerous and a good number have failed, I believe, because I’ve tried too hard, choosing strategies that try to address things that hadn’t happened. And then last weekend I saw with some clarity the error of my ways. Just don’t force it mate. Be organic. Act natural. Try-hards fall bro. My tactic? To do nothing, or more succinctly, don’t be too pro-active Dad. Hang back. We went to netball on Saturday morning. One of her friends stayed over Friday. She doesn’t eat before a match so that was so easy. On the

way home, she asked if I could take her to Botany. Me. And her. She had to approve my ‘outfit’ before we left the house (my cargo pants failed muster as did my boat shoes) but that’s fine. Roll with the punches right. I trailed like an exhausted hound and answered questions when prompted but it was fun. Really. It was only half a dozen clothes shops. And then she came to the supermarket with me to guide me with dinner ideas. On the way there we stopped for a coffee at my brother’s mobile truck and caught up with her teen cousin at Puma in DressMart. On the Sunday, after our usual Sunday morning things including a big walk (me not her), I asked if she wanted to drive to Mission Bay for one of those KiwiYo tubs of yumminess. Just to get out. She accepted and brought a friend along. We walked along the waterfront a bit and got pictures too (not with her don’t be crazy). And on the drive home, with YouTube blasting through my car speakers (not my music) and her laughing with her mate in the back seats, I was content. Easy-peasy this parenthood thing, even when you don’t know what you’re doing.

Angry residents join chorus over dodgy fibre installation By NICK KRAUSE

L

ocals are complaining about sub-standard broadband installations. A media outlet today reported that Mellons Bay man Joe Thornley and several of his neighbours are unimpressed with broadband installations by telecommunications infrastructure provider Chorus which appear to show cable running along fence lines held in place with duct tape. Mr Thornley, in a video news piece by the Herald Online, said he signed up for a fibre connection with communications service provider Spark in April. “I’m very concerned now that what I’ve got is an infrastructure time bomb,” he said. “We’ve got insulation tape just holding together my fibre installation from the street and I’m really concerned that it may be six months ...a year when that fails I’ll be stuck with a big bill to cover this really sub-standard infrastructure installation that I’ve got from Chorus.” He complained and the technician who completed the work, and his boss, turned up. “The message

SUB-STANDARD: Jervis Lin posted this photo on social media: “You can decide if this looks crappy or not,” he writes. Photo supplied

was the installation meet chorus standards.” A conversation with them, the video says, revealed they had three or four jobs daily. “And this is the result of speed over quality,” Mr Thornley said. Meanwhile Chorus told the Times that - in relation to the case highlighted in the Herald this morning – it is working to put this right as quickly as possible. “We have visited this house this morning to work out a plan to ensure fibre is installed to our normal high standards,” Chorus spokesman Nathan Beaumont said. “Chorus is currently doing more than 12,000 fibre installs every month

throughout New Zealand and the majority of these are done to a very high standard. As much as we would like to be perfect, we sometimes get it wrong but when we do get it wrong, we will work to make things right as quickly as possible. “It’s clear that on this occasion we haven’t met our own standards. Running cables over gardens and using duct tape is simply not acceptable.” The cable mounted to the fence is a standard method of installing fibre but in this instance the way it has been done fails to comply with Chorus standards, he said. “We will also be rectifying this install as soon as possible.”

Chorus and its three most common methods of fibre installation: ■ Mounted on a fence, driveway edge or retaining wall. If a suitable surface like a driveway edge, footpath, curbing, retaining wall or fence runs from a street to a property, we can mount the fibre cable to the surface. We aim to minimise the visual impact of this and mount the cable discretely. The lightweight nature of the cable means it won’t cause any weight-bearing issues ■ Buried cable in a grass verge or garden. If the route from a street to a property is a soft surface we can bury the fibre cable. This is done by digging a shallow trench by hand and laying the cable inside. The location is determined as a low impact area to avoid being dug up and it doesn’t need to be in a straight line. We restore any surface we disturb once we finish ■ Buried cable under a driveway or path. If there is a hard surface, like concrete, from a street to a property then machinery will be used to drill or dig a trench to bury the fibre cable. Have you been affected? Email editor@times.co.nz

achel Cooper is a young woman on a mission and the Howick RSA’s Community Welfare Fund Trust is right behind her. The 19-year-old exMacleans College student recently returned from the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya as one of two New Zealand delegates representing the Aotearoa Youth Leadership Institute. The RSA trust funded half the cost of her trip which was bolstered by a contribution from the Howick Lions Club. Last week Rachel, who lives in Mellons Bay, gave the trustees a run-down on the experience. She’s studying environmental science at Auckland University majoring in human geography. “I have a special interest in sustainable development so the conference was really relevant,” she said. “This was the second environment assembly the UN had ever had and it was groundbreaking.” She was one of seven in the youth group attending the assembly which was asked

to comment on points for discussion, for example climate change. “We gave feedback on ways work on climate change could be improved and we got agreement on the changes we wanted put into legislation. I wasn’t sure whether we would be listened to but a number of people said ‘you have really impressed us’.” Rachel said she was interested to see how people went about environment issues in other countries, such as Norway. “I could see the relevance of their work to New Zealand and I can see some ways I can apply this knowledge.” Asked what she will do with the knowledge gleaned from the assembly, Rachel said 17 goals relating to water quality were discussed “and New Zealand is not perfect in any of them”. With her special interest in environmental and social issues, she has since given feedback to the Ministry of the Environment. And she has completed a research project for the Youth Leadership Institute on how to deal with marine litter, giving easy to hard options.

Rachel Cooper Times photo Wayne Martin

“I would not have been able to go to the assembly without your support,” she told the trustees. “It is so crucial for me stepping forward.” RSA president Ray Sangster said the trustees were proud of Rachel’s achievements to date. “Everyone is a winner out of this.” Barry Dreyer, who chairs the trust, says Rachel approached the RSA because of her previous association with the organisation as a leader in Macleans Upham

House and the college’s work on annual Poppy Days. “We were pleased when we learned that she was from Upham House,” Mr Dreyer said. “Rachel’s request was a very good fit for us.” The community welfare fund provides financial assistance for any youth activity, education, or welfare project. In addition the trust has an annual $2000 fee paying scholarship for the first two years of full-time tertiary study. Applicants must be at a secondary school in the Howick RSA’s catchment area and be going direct from secondary school to full-time tertiary study. Applicants must have parents or grandparents that were returned service people, but do not need a connection to the RSA. “We look at every request according to its face value,” Mr Dreyer says. The Poppy Fund is dedicated to returned people and their immediate dependants from the Howick RSA catchment area which runs from the Tamaki Estuary to Beachlands/Maraetai and from Musick Point to Flat Bush.

For she’s a jolly good fellow

News bites

By Marianne Kelly

In our June 30 story about holocaust survivor Guta Goldstein, we reported that Auschwitz was managed by guta goldstein Rudolf Hess who was the Commandant of the “death factory”. This should have read Rudolf Hoess or Hoss who was eventually hanged next to the concentration camp’s crematorium in 1947. Rudolf Hess was the deputy Fuhrer who was captured in 1941 during a solo flight to Scotland on an apparently unauthorised peace mission. He was later convicted in the Nuremberg trials after the Second World War ended.

W

hen as a child Jennie McCormick looked in fascination at the night sky stars with her mum at their home in Whanganui, little did she know that she would be recognised as one of New Zealand’s leading amateur astronomers. The woman who operates an observatory at her Farm Cove home overlooking the Wakaaranga Estuary has been recognised by her peers, becoming the thirteenth Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand. “It’s nice to be recognised by my peers,” she says. “I had no idea. It was a real shock.” Now she is pondering the subject she should talk about for the opening presentation at next year’s society conference in Dunedin – perhaps her discovery of an asteroid in 2009, or a 1999 fireball, but probably a meteorite that fell through the roof of an Ellerslie house in 2004. “I was first on the scene asking ‘what’s the chance of one landing here when we are an isthmus?’ But it was there and it was still warm. Holy moly, that was exciting.” She’s also waiting for a decision on a name from the Minor

Planet Centre for the asteroid she discovered. Unlike comets, which can be named after the person who discovered them, asteroids can not. Ms McCormick says she has put forward a name that incorporates the New Zealand population. “I think people will be pleased with the name. “I wouldn’t mind discovering a comet so I could name it after myself – isn’t that vain,” she says in jest. Ms McCormick, who in 2006 was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to astronomy, left school at the age of 15 to ride race horses. “I wanted to be a vet, but I always loved the stars and science fiction,” she says. “I remember looking at the stars with my mother in Whanganui.” As a young woman she moved to Auckland and, after her marriage in the late 80s, she bought a pair of binoculars, a little telescope and joined the Auckland Astronomical Society. “That was it,” she says. “The people at the society taught me a lot. I was married with little kids and learned my way around the sky.” With an ambition to take part in research astronomy she built

Jenny mccormick

an observatory in 1999 at her Pakuranga home – an eight by six-foot garden shed with a roof that could be removed. After she responded to a call for data by the Ohio State University she was asked to come to America to talk to the faculty – “me, a mother from Pakuranga”. She became a member of MicroFUN (Microlensing Followup Network), an informal consortium of professional and amateur observers from five continents. “I work with the planets and send the data to the professionals to use and analyse,” she says. The grunty telescope at her Farm Cove observatory came courtesy of Ohio University. She also has a special camera that works with the telescope

to watch faint far-away stars. It came from Columbia University which uses Ms McCormick’s data on cataclysmic variable stars which can be seen from earth eclipsing each other. “When I joined the Auckland Astronomical Society I never thought I would come this far,” she says. “I worked at the Auckland Observatory as a teacher for a number of years and children would ask, have you ever discovered a planet? “Now I can say I have. I have co-discovered 22 planets and being able to do it from here [Farm Cove] is really good.” One drawback is the light pollution coming from street lights across the estuary. If the lights were shielded she says she would be able to view even fainter stars. “I feel that children today living in cities never get to see a true night sky, unless they are in the middle of nowhere and away from light pollution. Kids miss out.” She tried out a solution on Auckland Council, presenting a report to the Howick Local Board about the benefits of shielding the lights. “I don’t think they got it. I received a letter saying if I wanted shields on the lights in a light polluting area 0.9 kilometres away I could pay for them!”

Pressure gets to Pakuranga Pakuranga United fell to Grammar Tec 17-7 in its Auckland Rugby Premier match at the weekend after trailing 10-7 at the break. Coach and former All Black Pita Alatini was philosophical. “Unfortunately we folded under pressure and made some costly decisions. I felt our forwards were really dominant in both set piece and phase play for most of the game.” The team is now sitting sixth on the competition table. The loss means Pakuranga has to depend on other teams’ results to get into the top four. Pakuranga meets Waitemata this weekend.

All good in the hood More than 850 community groups throughout New Zealand will share a total of $1 million, made available through the annual Z Energy Good In The Hood programme - as voted by Kiwis. On Monday morning at the Z Petrol Station in Botany, South Auckland Z Energy retailer Wayne Kennerley, who runs the South Eastern Cluster Z Energy, said it was great to see so much local support for the groups throughout South Auckland. “It was really humbling

to hear about the great work they were all doing, and see the support that exists for them in our community,” he said. “The Good in the Hood programme is a real celebration of the countless hours spent by these groups in making a significant contribution to the health and well-being of their community.” Mr Kennerley, who runs the South Auckland cluster of 17 sites, said customers voted for their charities in May and $64,000 was given to these last week. hen Geoff Lim started his electronics service business an accountant gave him some advice: “Keep it small so you can manage life easily.” But it became quickly obvious to Geoff, and his wife Barbara, that growth is something you can’t stop, “otherwise you will succumb”, he says. After working in a sales and service business with his two brothers at Lim Electronics in Mangere East, Geoff and Barbara set up their own service centre in 1993 called I Fix 4U at 106 Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga. “When people couldn’t find us I would say, ‘drive at 100 miles per hour and when you see a flash you have found me’,” Geoff says. A speed camera was strategically placed on the verge outside their Pakuranga property. By 2009 they were outgrowing the premises and the decision was made to move to their current site at 138 Harris Road, East Tamaki. I Fix 4U has added an additional staff member every year as the result of the demand. Now 20 staff members run nine service vans. They can be seen throughout wider Auckland, from Orewa to Pukekohe and as far south as Pokeno. “It was a natural progression,” Geoff says. “People like our services. Most of the work involves a high level of expertise and we are able to supply that. And we like our customers to be happy.” The team includes electri-

geoff lim

cians, refrigeration engineers and electronic technicians. Qualified with a New Zealand Certificate in Engineering, Geoff spends considerable time on the road visiting customers and supplying quotes. Over the past 15 years, he says, the company has diversified into heat pumps and air conditioning which is now the main business. It carries out warranty service work for the major brands, such as LG, Panasonic, Mitsubishi and Fujitsu. General repairs are still an important part of the business, along with commercial work for factories and offices. Since moving to Pakuranga I Fix 4U has been a regular Times advertiser and the relationship continues as strong as ever today, The customer base is diverse, Geoff says, from Kiwis to the new wave of immigrants from China, India and South Africa. “Immigrants tend to be good business people and they ask for our service,” he says. “The word gets out that we can do the work and we are asked to give a quote. A lot of it

is word of mouth.” Asked if he enjoys the work he says “yes I enjoy seeing people and I like having happy customers”. Every six months Geoff says he can identify changes in trends. “New legislation changes everything, as well as new products coming out, such as Panasonic and Fujitsu which are well-known for the air purifying performance of their heat pumps,” he says. “No-one realised so many people were suffering from things like asthma and eczema and these appliances are ideal for homes. “People now have higher expectations in their homes with centralised central heating systems that cool down as well. People expect these things with the standard of living going up.” In the future, Geoff says, centralised central heating is likely to be more popular. “Already people have moved from installing a heat pump in their living rooms to another one in the bedrooms, especially with global warming. “In the 2016 summer, with every evening over 23 degrees, people were putting in heat pumps to use as an air conditioner, especially in the bedrooms. “They are economical to use,” he says. “And a person must have a good sleep to prepare for the next day. It’s a must for parents who need energy to look after their children and go to work.”

A Day...

with Dr Bryn Thompson

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY IS JULY 28, 2016

Hepatitis is often mentioned in the media. Hepatitis is a cluster of diseases characterised by inflammation of the liver. This large organ performs many essential functions in the human body, including filtering the blood, making proteins and hormones, storing vitamins and detoxifying the body. Alcohol, obesity, certain medications and chemical injury can cause a noninfectious hepatitis resulting in poor liver function. The most common types are Hepatitis A, B and C- three unrelated viruses. Hepatitis A is caused by eating infected food or water. It is more common in developing countries that are popular travel spots. This viral infection is rarely fatal but can cause many weeks of illness. There is a non-funded vaccination available that is extremely effective against Hepatitis A. Hepatitis B is spread by contact with infected semen, blood or other body fluids. Though most commonly contracted from sexual contact it can be acquired from breast milk, a human bite or sharing a toothbrush with an infected person. Hepatitis B vaccination is a routine vaccine in the childhood schedule, though antibodies do not develop for all people. Healthcare workers, plumbers, educators and high risk travellers should consider vaccination. Hepatitis C is usually spread through direct contact from the blood of an infected person. It is estimated there are 50000 people in New Zealand with Hepatitis C but only 40% are aware they have this. It is an important diagnosis because more than 60% of cases will develop chronic liver disease left untreated. There have been remarkable developments in the treatment of Hepatitis B and C in recent years. There has been additional Pharmac funding and a hope of eradication of Hepatitis C in the future. Talk to your doctor if you may be at risk of having the disease. Perhaps take special care of your liver this month by participating in Dry July!

Yours in good health – Dr. Bryn Thompson, Lead Clinician

 WOMEN TODAY French preferbial style Wendy Janse Van Rensburg came to New Zealand in 2012 with her four children, along with a few suitcases, and immediately fell in love with this country. With her warm personality, she soon made a happy family life here. And now she has put her distinctive, stylish stamp on Cascades Trading Post. She believes “family is everything” and while houses are merely bricks and mortar, homes should be beautiful too. Wendy took over Cascades Trading Post (formerly called Pop Up) on June 1 and has established an enchanting ambience in the shop with some very affordable furniture and homeware. Furniture in French Provencal style is the basis of the collection which includes everything from retro and antique china through to delicate linen, quirky ornaments, luxurious lamps, masses of plump cushions and authentic French paintings. Many of the pieces have been custom-made by her husband, featuring special details like enamel and glass handles. Wendy has worked in the fashion and building

design industry throughout her life. The selection of secondhand handbags and shoes and the rack of designer clothes on sale showcase a chic style – and all at amazingly affordable prices. “My mother was French and I grew up sitting under her sewing table while she worked. As a child, I loved visiting haberdashery and fabric shops with her.” In South Africa, Wendy worked for many years with her husband in their own business working on interior and exterior fits for homes and commercial buildings. Wendy is now taking her shabby chic style to local markets and also is in demand as an interior designer. “I’m a very tactile person and just love beautiful things including that mix of old and new.” Wendy wishes to thank the shop’s former owner, Marilyn Boe, for her support. Driving local heritage village “It takes a village to run a village” is the motto among volunteers at the Howick Historical Village, a sentiment Charmaine Chapman can’t agree with more. She describes her job, as marketing and events team leader at the village, as multi-faceted with no two days alike - looking after promotions and publicity, advertising, sales and marketing as well as tourism. Charmaine is a former teacher who arrived in New Zealand 18 years ago from Durban, South Africa and lives in Howick. The enthusiastic pianist discovered event marketing when she completed a Master of Arts Management degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in Mount Eden, central Auckland. When a job at Howick’s heritage village was advertised in the Howick and Pakuranga Times she applied “and nearly jumped out of my seat when I was asked in for an interview”. “It made my day,” she says. “I love that fact that I can create my own work and it’s so varied. Also we have extremely creative staff here and I have to manage the logistics of it.

“My motto is ‘I live with commitment and consistency’. Without commitment nothing will be started and without consistency nothing would be followed through to completion.” Charmaine runs the Live Days and is constantly looking for new business and ways to increase the village income. A highlight came last year when the team decided to turn the village into a ‘Haunted Historical village” on Halloween. “It was completely different from anything previously done and out of peoples’ comfort zones. We decided to give it a go. This place is fantastic at night. “It was a huge success and we will do it again this year.” Another new idea is ‘Vibe at the Village’ programmed for next September when participants will be able to spend a day living exactly as Victorians did, from making food from scratch to working as a blacksmith. “You will often hear me muttering “it’s all in good fun!” “That’s what keeps me going – laughter, taking wee breaks during the day, disturbing other staff with my funny (not) jokes.”

Dynamic Real Estate agent Ellen Ming has one of the most recognisable faces on the Bucklands Beach peninsula and her journey has been an interesting one. At 19 years of age she established a clothing business in Auckland CBD that grew to employ several staff. A few years later, alongside her husband she opened and managed cafes around Auckland whilst maintaining the clothing business and starting a family. Once the children were through their primary years, she was finally in a position to move into the industry she had set her sights on many years prior – real estate. She found her negotiation and people skills gained in her previous endeavours to be a fantastic asset when navigating the real estate world. Ellen has consistently been an Elite Performer with Ray White for the 16 years she has been in the industry. Elite members represent the top 2 per cent of

the entire Ray White workforce based on sales. Her focus is on marketing homes to achieve the very best sale price for her clients and after 25 years of living in the community and knowing the houses intimately, is able to match the right buyer with the perfect home. When Ray White relocated its Wharf Road operation to Half Moon Bay, Ellen took the opportunity for a new venture. The Bucklands Beach office became a stand along boutique office, which enabled Ellen to focus on her own marketing whilst being part of the Ray White group. Ellen says, “we are very much part of the community” having helped hundreds of people move into new homes. “It is a privilege being part of people’s changing lives and seeing their dreams come true.” If you are thinking of selling your home and want to entrust it to a proven expert who has sold over 500 homes locally, do give Ellen a call.

If recent changes have caused any disruption she assures clients her regular exemplary service is right on track at Chapel Rd. Of course, this cold snap makes a Cocoon Thai Spa treatment difficult to pass by. “We have a wide range of treatments from a one-hour energy boost through to whole day luxury packages,” Gaye says.

Bill will address P-plagued homes Times photo Wayne Martin

N

ational MP Andrew Bayly is proposing changes in the law to address the problem with methamphetamine-contaminated houses. After months of research, the MP for Hunua - whose constituency covers Flat Bush, Beachlands and Maraetai - will put a Bill in the members’ ballot that would give landlords more power to test and remedy their rental properties of dangerous levels of contamination. “The number of residential properties owned or offered for sale, which are later discovered to be contaminated by methamphetamine, or P, is increasing,” Mr Bayly told the Times. “This puts the health and wellbeing of tenants in serious jeopardy, with children and old people particularly susceptible to the effects of P. It’s vital we look after New Zealand’s most vulnerable tenants and ensure all renters are living in healthy, safe properties.” The bill places an obligation on the landlord to provide rental accommodation free of P-contamination, while giving them more power to confront the problem in their properties. “You can’t rent out a property knowing it is P infested,”

remedy: Local MP Andrew Bayly proposes law change for P contaminated houses.

he says. “You must disclose to your tenant about the previous contamination.” With a spate of P-contaminated homes in the area proving to be a costly exercise for new homeowners and existing ones, the proposed changes specifically enable landlords to enter premises with appropriate notice for the purposes of testing for P and other dangerous substances. It also reinforces that tenants can be removed when a house is uninhabitable, and ensures contaminated houses aren’t tenanted. “This prevents landlords from knowingly renting P-contaminated properties and requires them to inform tenants as soon as practicable of the results of a P

test that show dangerous levels of contamination,” says Mr Bayly. The areas to look out for are the power points in the kitchen, laundry and bathroom, he says. The Government has convened a working group tasked with clarifying what levels of contamination are dangerous, agreeing on an appropriate testing methodology for P-contaminated properties, and considering remediation processes. “The Bill complements this work and asks for standardising testing results, and the remediation process,” he says. It builds on the work of the Prime Minister’s ‘Tackling Methamphetamine Action Plan’, which has seen an increase in methamphetamine-related convictions as well as a reduction in demand for the drug. “I have secured the support of the National Caucus for this Bill and will be seeking wider support from other parties,” he says having consulted with the New Zealand Property Investors’ Federation, the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand and the Auckland District Law Society who all agree that law changes in this area are needed.

Spend over $40, fill out the entry form and once a week, for four weeks, a lucky customer in each FreshChoice supermarket will have this month’s power/gas bill paid back, up to $350. Terms and conditions apply. See in-store for details or go to FreshChoice.co.nz. Competition runs 27 June to 24 July 2016.

r McIntyre, I’m wondering if the whole school can donate towels to the SPCA’, read a handwritten letter from Briana Craig-Courname, Year 6 student of Owairoa Primary School. Ten-year-old Briana asked the principal if the school could organise a collection of towels and clean bedding for SPCA. ‘Can we donate the towels for kittens, dogs and birds to the SPCA shop because they have run out of towels’, she asked. One to encourage the initiative, Mr McIntyre gave the nod and the students managed to collect 200 old towels, blankets and sheets.

Learning under the microscope A group of Year 1 students from Elm Park Primary School visited Pakuranga College as part of their science studies this month. Senior students from the college’s Year 12 applied science group showed the youngsters how to prepare and view microscope slides. Elm Park teacher Roseanne Worsfold said: “We have been studying bubbles with the children,

which led naturally to the idea of magnification. “We thought it would be great for them to see how microscopes work, so I gave Pakuranga College a call and they were keen to help.” The students prepared slides using their own cheek cells, hair and also onion skin, as well as viewing a range of interesting preprepared slides containing

items such as blood, pond weed and other plants. Larraine Barton, head of science at Pakuranga College, was delighted with how the experience went. “It is wonderful to see our students so engaged with the young children. “One of our learning habits at the school is respect and an important part of it is empathy,” she said.

howcasing South Auckland’s ability to host a high-end fashion event in the heart of the Pacific demographic of New Zealand is the Pacific Fusion Fashion Show (PFFS) for designers from South Auckland. The idea behind it is to exhibit the fashion-talent that comes from the people of Pacific ancestry, allowing network opportunities that can further enhance their fashion design careers. The event is the brainchild of director, Nora Swann who will also be running an up-styling show on the night. Mrs Swann will be using the Ivy Park brand to put together fashionable ensembles in collaboration with Topshop to demonstrate how to mix and match pieces to create a fresh, stylish look. Pacific Fusion Fashion Show will be held on Saturday, September 3 in Botany. A pop-up shop will be available on the night for the audience to purchase designer garments. As an inaugural runway show, the event has secured over 35 partners, including New Zealand Fashion Week. The event, originally targeted towards Pacific designers generated massive interest from non-Pacific designers, and is now open to all ethnici-

Sweetheart scammer ‘despicable’ ➤➤From page 1

“He divorced his wife 26 years ago and had not been romantically involved since then. He has two children aged 23 and 25. He seemed to have plausible answers.” Loas says Steve returned to Singapore and then Malaysia where she believes he is still based. She confides that he phones her once or twice a week to discuss plans for the future. But warnings from family and those close to her made her wary. Mimi Hung and her family have known Loas for more than 35 years. Loas is her New Zealand mum. Mimi is worried. “She is like part of our family. She’s the godmother of our grandchildren. It’s been quite sad for us trying to wean her off this scam,” says Mimi, who is with Loas in Hawaii this week as companion and helper. “I know it’s still going on. We’re quite lost as what to do and how to help her not waste more money on the scam.” Naturally, the family sped to her side when they learned Loas – part Chinese – was to wed this Steve, believed to be a Dutchman. “I sent them an email that I was getting married,” Loas admits. “They all converged.” She drops her head. “I even took a picture of the church (St John’s in Bucklands Beach).”

scammed: Loas Toung is disappointed and annoyed she has been scammed and says it illustrates how Photo Nick Krause vulnerable some people can be.

She’d swallowed the hook. Mimi’s two grandchildren were to be ring bearers and a tuxedo and dress duly purchased. “I believed it was true. Of course I was very flattered.” But there is a message. “I would advise anyone who is feeling vulnerable or lonely to be very careful before they make decisions regarding

these websites,” says Loas. “I’ve been duped. I think they have absolutely no scruples and should be ashamed of what they’re doing. “Taking advantage of vulnerable people is a despicable thing to do.” While down, Loas isn’t completely out. She has tried to test him, offering to pay his fare to New Zealand. He

readily accepted. “And very soon he was able to tell me it would cost $980,” she says. “I have asked him to send me a photo but, apart from a very bad selfie of him eating his dinner, nothing so far,” she says. “I suppose it was my natural curiosity that got me involved with this man. And, it is said that ‘curiosity killed the cat’.”

Investment, romance and upfront payment scams remain some of the most challenging issues for New Zealanders going online. In 2014, NetSafe received reports of more than $1.5million lost to romance scams, many looking for love online and sending large sums of money offshore via Western Union and other money transfer schemes. A total 67 victims contacted NetSafe during 2014 suffering an average loss of $23,500. The industrialised nature of online romance scamming can cause victims serious harm as they may have to deal with the financial losses involved and the additional psychological trauma of being defrauded and jilted by a ‘lover’. UK research into the psychology of the online dating romance scam (PDF) has found that “many victims are often in denial when they are told that their ‘lover’ is a fiction invented by criminal gangs to extort money”. After months or years of communicating and building up trust, friends or relatives who warn victims they are being scammed can find their claims denied with those involved vulnerable to further requests for financial assistance. Rest your bones in good hands Motorway traffic queues are fast becoming a distant memory for many patients of orthopaedic surgeon Mr Gary French, thanks to his handy location at Ormiston Hospital. Having moved from his central Auckland location in 2009, Mr French founded his private practice, Ormiston Orthopaedics, at the local private hospital without any inkling as to how things would pan out. “We took a punt, but it’s worked exceptionally well!” says Mr French. “Patients from south and east Auckland areas were finding it increasingly difficult to get to appointments when I worked in the central city. “Now, getting to and from the hospital is much easier for patients and their friends and family/whanau to visit and offer support – which is so important. “It makes complete sense for people to seek treatment locally if such treatment is available, given the ever-increasing congestion on Auckland’s main transport routes,” says Mr French, himself a South Auckland resident. “I no longer find myself stuck in the car in traffic and it’s so convenient for me to drop in and check on patients either at the weekend or after hours.” He says that the comfortable hospital environment contributes to the patients’ happiness and well-being. “Our patient surveys consistently produce outstanding results, and our patients are extremely satisfied. They say it’s like staying at a hotel, not a hospital!” What’s more, those with Southern Cross health insurance are finding orthopaedic care a lot more affordable now that Mr French is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider for primary hip and knee replacement surgery. “Previously, many people with limited cover chose to go on public hospital waiting lists despite having paid

insurance premiums. “Now, as an affiliated provider, I can provide certainty of costs involved with hip and knee replacements and, as a result, most Southern Cross members with partial insurance cover now opt to have their surgery in the private sector. “It’s made a huge difference to the patients, and reduces the impact on the public hospital waiting lists.” Mr French’s practice at Ormiston Orthopaedics is largely focused on hip and knee joint replacement surgery, both primary and revision. He also performs knee arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruction, foot surgery and other general orthopaedic procedures. He spent 18 years at Counties Manukau DHB treating bone and soft tissue cancer patients, and retired from this part of his practice in December 2011. After more than 20 years in orthopaedics, the dedicated surgeon is highly respected in his field. Local GPs constantly refer patients to his services and the hospital is wellequipped to handle the demand. “We have plenty of back up facilities. The hospital has visiting cardiologists and a range of skilled surgical specialists, as well as excellent x-ray, MRI, and ultrasound services. “The specialists all work together at Ormiston, with the patient as their primary focus.” Mr French has ceased his work in the public sector, which means he has more time to focus on his patients and ensure they receive the best care possible. Immigration has become the hot-button issue that has got people debating about it all over the globe. As emotionally charged world leaders feed on propaganda and fear campaigns about immigrants depriving locals of resources and jobs, the fact remains that most economies thrive on diversity. Prime Minister John Key says it would be ill-informed to blame immigrants for strain on house prices in Auckland. Immigration expert Saif Shaikh, director Immigration Advice New Zealand Ltd., says: “The most entrepreneurial, innovative and motivated citizen is the one that has been given an opportunity and wants to repay debt.” A former warranted immigration officer with Immigration New Zealand and a fully licensed immigration advisor, Saif who has earned a sterling reputation for himself, says that New Zealand’s migrant settlement and integration strategy recognises that New Zealand gains the best economic and social benefit from migrants when they settle here successfully. “The mission statement is to help migrants make New Zealand their home and participate fully and contribute to all aspects of New Zealand life.” The friendly team of nine at Immigration Advice New Zealand provides helpful advice and committed services to hundreds of hopefuls who want to immigrate to New Zealand. current in the ever-changing climate of immigration laws and policies. “We do realise how anxious the client would be to hear about their progress so we make it a point that are kept abreast of the process.” Anna says that their clients are mainly NZ based who extend their temporary visa or convert their temporary visa into a permanent residence. “We guide and assist the client in the right direction suggesting courses they should undertake to help them get the right job. I read in today’s Herald about New Zealand’s literacy, numeracy and problem-solving and saw I was heading from a high, based on old school reports, down a slippery slope at an alarming rate. Then the text: “HLB has given plans to improve pedestrian safety on a section of The Parade at Bucklands Beach the green light.” More detail and then: “While there was support for

My regular morning and evening walks, throughout the area, are immensely pleasurable due to consistently clear, fresh air. I do admit however, to appreciating the homely aroma of wood fires as I proceed on my evening walks. Howick is one of the oldest established areas in Auckland and must retain a certain sense of tradition. The leafy streets sadly are disappearing. Please do not contemplate banning the historic comfort of wood fires. Chris Keeling Cockle Bay

The Plunket Knitters are very grateful for all the yarn they were given after our last request in May. In the meantime we have been busy (we take about two rubbish bags of knitting to Plunket each month) and we are getting low on yarn again. We would be very grateful for any spare yarn and buttons you may have. We can use any quantity or colour of yarn, especially 8ply or 4ply. You may leave it at the Howick Information Centre in Picton Street any week day between 10am and 4pm. If you would like it collected please ring Janet on 535-4039. Janet Perkins Botany Downs

There couldn’t be a greater divide between the intentions of the board as expressed by the chair and the skew the writer of the article presented. The road safety signs sitting at intersections around our city are supposed to give drivers the message to slow down, drive carefully and hopefully remain part of our community, or so I am told. Those that thought up this brilliant scheme obviously believe they are dealing with normal people. That is the first mistake. The second mistake is thinking that the dangerous drivers care a damn for their own safety and that of other road users. I would suggest that a sign that may have more effect would have a number of white crosses in each corner, and a large white cross in the centre with the wording “Will this one have your name on it?” You don’t see cigarette packets with attractive young healthy people on the cover, and we are led to believe that campaign is working. Too often we hear about children being murdered by caregivers (a misguided name). Why are the parents and families not held responsible as well? Surely it would be as irresponsible as putting your kids in someone else’s boat without life jackets, or in a car without seat belts, or handing them a cigarette lighter to play with. Surely, if you look the other way, you are aiding and abetting in the crime. It is adults who make the bad decisions for the children, and the kids don’t have a say in the matter, they just pay the ultimate price. It would be unreasonable for an adult to accept the abuse handed out to these children, but for some weird reason, the families, friends and neighbours seem to just look the other way, and act surprised and disgusted when the inevitable happens. It’s showtime!

Children’s tale a heart warmer By MARIANNE KELLY

A

classic fairy story is described as “a beautiful story of friendship” by Kate Shaw who will direct the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre’s next production. Charlotte’s Web has a cast of 31 young people aged from nine to 14. It’s based on the children’s novel in which Joseph Robinette collaborated with the author EB White on the authorised stage version. It tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with Charlotte, the barn spider. When Wilbur is in danger of being slaughtered by the farmer, Charlotte writes messages praising Wilbur in her web in order to persuade the farmer to let him live. Fourteen-year-old Pakuranga College student, Brianna Pearce

plays Charlotte who she describes as helpful and always keeps the situation calm. Meanwhile the rambunctious pig Wilbur is the runt of his litter and he’s often strongly emotional. Owairoa Primary student, Shayna Eksteen, 10, plays Wilbur and says he’s a character. Fern Arable, the farmer John’s daughter, is played by Somerville Intermediate student, Charlotte Wellm, 11. Fern adopts Wilbur in his infancy and later visits him, trying to save him from being eaten. ■ The Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre presents Charlotte’s Web at 7.30pm on July 7 and 8 and 1pm and 4pm on July 9 and 10 at Harlequin Theatre, 563 Pakuranga Road, Howick. Phone 537-4943.

OUR HOMES TODAY

20 — Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, July 7, 2016

Worries about insurance cover Fewer New Zealanders are confident they have enough insurance cover for their home and contents, according to a new survey. Consumer satisfaction company, Canstar Blue says the survey shows a concerning trend. Over the past four years, to 2016, the number of Kiwis who said they had enough cover dropped from 83 per cent to 72 per cent. The company’s general manager Jose George says in places where property values are high and rising, this number drops even further. “Just 64 per cent of Aucklanders and those from Bay of Plenty are confident they have enough cover. “Home insurance is a must-have for home owners and contents insurance is an essential, regardless of whether you rent or own,” George says. “Having the right amount of insurance cover is important; particularly in the case of substantial or total loss. Review your cover regularly to make sure it accurately reflects your needs and is still up to date.” Ways of managing premiums include opting for a higher excess which can reduce the cost of the insurance, something that 20 per cent of the survey’s respondents did last year. Comparing policies online is another way to ensure the best deal. The survey also showed that Kiwis are taking too many chances with their possessions and security. Many often sleep with their windows open (30 per cent) and just over one in 10 Kiwis (14 per cent) leave windows open when they leave the house. Many burglaries are opportunistic crimes, George says. Respondents say the theft of their precious memories would hit them hardest, with a third naming their photographs as their most inconvenient loss. This is followed by the loss of a laptop at 28 per cent and a mobile phone at 19 per cent. Interestingly, Kiwis are least worried about their jewellery being taken (12 per cent).

Plan for water demand C

lose to $5 billion will be spent on water infrastructure projects over the next 10 years to provide for the SuperCity’s forecast population growth. Watercare plans to spend $4.5b to provide capacity in its network for 195,000 new houses. Statistics New Zealand has projected median growth of 700,000 people for Auckland over the next 30 years. The Auckland Council CCO (Council-controlled organisation) has released its latest asset management plan setting out how it plans to stay ahead of Auckland’s growing demand for water and waste water services. Chief executive Raveen Jaduram says Watercare’s networks already have capacity to allow 45,000 new houses to connect today. “Over the next 10 years we will expand that to provide capacity for a further 195,000 new homes.” Close to half (46 per cent) of the $4.9b 10-year investment will go towards providing capacity for growth. This includes treatment plant and process upgrades, the construction of new reservoirs, pump stations and pipelines. The rest will be spent on replacing existing assets (44 per cent) and improving the level of service to customers (10 per cent). Watercare’s major strategic projects, Mr Jaduram says, are planned and staged to ensure water and waste water networks continue to have sufficient capacity to meet demand as Auckland’s population increases. “The Waikato water treatment plant has been built in such a way as to support staged expansions,” he says. “The plant has already undergone two projects since 2013 to increase its

capacity. We are now preparing for further expansions that will enable the plant to meet demand over the next 20 years.” Improving network resilience by maximising the use of existing assets is also a key priority in Watercare’s planning projects. “We are building infrastructure as well as better utilising our existing assets. By doing this we can keep the costs of water supply and waste water services for our customers to a minimum,” Mr Jaduram says. Watercare receives no money from the council and does not pay any dividends. “We are self-funded so almost 70 per cent of our investment will come from our customers and those who create growth.” A key water project is the Hunua 4 Watermain, a 32-kilometre water pipe that will ultimately connect the reservoirs in Redoubt Road, Manukau to those in Khyber Pass, Grafton. The

$376 million project provides security of the water supply and allows for Auckland’s population growth. Construction started in 2012 and is expected to be complete in 2020. The pipe diameter varies from 1.6-1.9 metres. Construction of an additional biological nutrient removal facility at the Mangere treatment plant site is also underway. This facility will use the same technology currently employed at the plant to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from the waste water stream, improving the quality of the treated waste water before it is discharged to the environment. Other upgrades at the plant will include the construction of additional sludge digestion capacity and solids stream processing upgrades to increase processing capacity and replace ageing sludge tanks. ■■ The asset management plan is online at www.watercare.co.nz.

Fast track funding to SuperCity infrastructure for house build T

he Government’s decision to establish a $1 billion fund to fast-track infrastructure development will go a long way towards overcoming Auckland Council’s major objections to opening up residential land on the fringes of the city, says Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive, Ashley Church. Prime Minister John Key announced the new $1 billion fund at the weekend which will be advanced to Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Christchurch and Queeenstown local authorities in the form of interest-free loans to be repaid over 10 years. The Government fund will own or finance the infrastructure until the councils receive rates revenue from the new houses. Auckland Mayor Len Brown welcomes the proposal saying it will contribute to the acceleration of housing supply in Auckland without increasing the burden on ratepayers or adding to the council’s debt levels. But Green Party co-leader James Shaw says it’s not surprising Mr Brown wants the Government to change the new rules because the quickest and most affordable way to solve the housing crisis is to develop more homes within the existing city. “If the loans are restricted to new greenfields developments, that’s a sign that National wants

Auckland to sprawl out and not build up,” he says. “Auckland must not be forced into sprawling further out to empty suburbs, miles from jobs, schools and good public transport.” While Mr Church applauds the decision, he has repeated a warning that “nothing short of a clear and unequivocal sign to the private sector will bring about the scale of new home construction that will be required to slow down house price inflation.

“Council and Government housing initiatives are a useful demonstration of leadership, but the Government nor Auckland Council can, or should, build the volume of new dwellings required to address the extreme shortage currently facing Auckland city,” he says. The Government, Mr Church says, now needs to announce a series of initiatives designed to encourage the private sector to step up to the plate and do the

‘heavy lifting’. Such measures could include a return of the ability to claim depreciation on dwellings constructed from now; removal of all LVR restrictions on the construction of new dwellings; and an exemption from the ‘bright line’ test where the seller had built a home rather than purchased an existing home. “Moves such as these would quickly create private and investor activity in new home con-

struction and would lead to a focus on the construction end of the market – which has got to be preferable to the current situation where 42 per cent of all purchases in Auckland are made by investors selling existing homes to each other.” Mr Church says the high cost of land, particularly in Auckland, means these measures would not lead to a reduction in housing prices, but they would definitely contribute to slowing down the price growth. “Talks of moves to ‘crash the market’ or bring down house prices are naive,” he says. “That simply isn’t going to happen. Instead, we should be focusing on using the private sector to end this boom by building thousands of new dwellings as quickly as possible.” Information about how the debt for the interest-free housing infrastructure loan will be repaid is urgently needed, says Stephen Selwood, chief executive of the NZ Council for Infrastructure Development. “If development levies are used, this will transfer risk to developers and resulting higher section prices,” he says. “If targeted rates are used, this will reduce development risk and home owners will pay for infrastructure over time, rather than in section prices making houses more affordable.”

We use the “Socratic method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!

We are only 6 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

Ensuring the Warriors never give up By FARIDA MASTER

ing as an individual, I wanted to do more for the community through sport.” Being the talking point of NRL was a high pressure job. It involved being in the public glare 24/7. “The publicity they get is 10 times more than the All Blacks get in New Zealand, It was a major soap opera with a huge following,” he says of the time he used to address at least 10 TV channels and newspaper report-

e calls himself ‘lucky Jim’. Jim Doyle, CEO Vodafone Warriors has proved that it is not only the luck of the Irish but the luck of the Scottish that has come to play ever since he got his first job as a rookie electrician. “It was in 1970s when jobs were hard to come by in Scotland. Around 250 people applied for the job. And who do you think got it?” smiles the high flying Cockle Bay resident who traces his life from humble beginnings of a Scottish electrician to being a former boss man of the rich and powerful Australian National Rugby League (NRL) and currently is the chief executive of Warriors. Addressing the Rotary Club of Somerville that fundraises by manning car parks outside Mt Smart Stadium during the Warrior games, Mr Doyle says he got an electrician’s job only because he was good at playing darts! “Luckily for me the guy who gave me a job loved the game and said `if you come and play for my team I will give you the job’. In search of greener pastures, the Scotsman moved to South Africa where he met his wife, an expat from Liverpool. Working in the technology sector and studying at University after hours, he soon realised there was too much

ers at any given time. On a more serious note, he says that fronting up and being honest about slips-up and scandals is the best approach to handling dramatic highs and lows of the game. Moving tracks, he took on the reins as chief of Warriors because he believes that it is through sport that one can effect change and impact lives. The priority was to inject good values, boundaries and profes-

sionalism in the team. “The players were very talented but had no values and were not professional. We linked values like being respectful, courageous and grounded to their performance on field,” he says of the Warriors. “We wanted to create a club that we are proud of. They have to be the warriors in the true sense of the word and never give up,” he says.

violence in South Africa and headed to a more peaceful New Zealand 23 years ago. An avid golfer, he made an executive decision to live near a golf course. “The real estate agents suggested I buy a house in Howick and this is where we came to stay.” A job offer with satellite navigation GPS systems company Navman where he contributed towards steering the company from $3 million to $500m before they sold it for $100m, made him realise that money is not the be all and end all of everything. Lady luck once again smiled when he received a call out of the blue asking if he would like to be the CEO of the NRL in Sydney. “I grew up playing soccer and had developed leadership skills in business. Howick Intermediate finished a creditable third in the recent Auckland Inter Zone Rugby Competition in Avondale. The team won the South Eastern Zone competition in May to qualify for the Inter Zone last week. Howick Intermediate won three out of four games in its pool to play in the semi-finals against Viscount which it lost by one try. The school went onto play for third and fourth against St Peters and won that game 16-0. The school acknowledged special contributions from captain Ben Ake who showed excellent skills (ball handling and tackling) and scored the highest number of tries.

St Kents hang tough against Kings Saint Kentigern College held King’s College scoreless in the second-half to secure a vital 24-17 win in Round 8 of the 1A competition. In the final 10 minutes on Saturday, St. Kents foiled sequences of nine phases, 10 phases and 12 phases as they held on for the bonus point victory. Kings took a 17-10 lead to the interval after an 18-phase attack resulted in a Ajay Mua try. The Kings No 8 proved tough to contain with ball in hand. Both sides were reluctant to hold the ball in the first quarter attempting to kick for territory and force mistakes in the opposition half. In the sixth minute, Kings first-five Ciarahn Matote opened the scoring with a 45-metre penalty. Seven minutes later, St Kents fullback Etene Nanai scored a try running down a deft Dakohta Taimani grubber. In the 20th minute, Mua squeezed an offload in a two-man tackle to Edward Vaeau-Mulitalo who fended off Taimani and sprinted 50m to give the visitors the lead. St Kents responded in the 34th minute when first-five Rivez Reihana glided through from close range, but Kings led at halftime and made all the play early in the second half putting together 11 and 15-phase attacks. St. Kents rallied and drew level in the 53rd minute when Reihana slipped through again. Five minutes later, rangy No 8 Kayleb Milne reached out to propel the hosts ahead. Hope for Warriors and Blues I

Agnew’sle Ang

t’s encouraging to observe that the much-improved form of the Warriors and Blues has offered hope for their loyal, long suffering fans. Although, having failed to make the Super Rugby play-offs with six wins and a draw from 13 games played, the Blues had the Crusaders and Hurricanes reeling before fading in the last quarter of their last two clashes. While a current 11th placing in a field of 18 is not what new coach Tana Umaga would have wanted, the team has made progress since he took over the reins from Sir John Kirwan.Steven Luatua, Jerome Kaino and Kara Pryor were magnificent in overpowering the highlyregarded loose forward trio of Victor Vito, Ardie Savea and Brad Shields in the latest 27-37 loss to the Hurricanes. The rugged Kaino was rewarded with two tries, the same as speedy Hurricanes lock Vaea Fifita, and Pryor demonstrated Savea type speed in sprinting in for his. Equally encouraging was the slick passing skills of five-eighths Ihaia West and Piers Francis in igniting the Blues backline which, for far too many years, has badly lacked cohesion.

With second-five Sonny Bill Williams having signed for next year, West and Francis could be left to battle for the No 10 jersey following the failure to woo Damian McKenzie and Beauden Barrett to the Blues fold. While McKenzie’s decision to stay loyal to the Chiefs is commendable, his chances of playing first-five ahead of Aaron Cruden are negligible whereas he would have been first choice there had he joined the Blues. Admittedly he’s an exciting fullback. However first-five is his preference and seems a more natural fit for a young player who needs more game time there if he is to win the All Black spot ahead of Barrett, Cruden and Lima Sopoaga. Hopefully the Warriors will become the NRL comeback story of the year having decided to become a team in the true sense of the word from the rabble they were. Whether it was the guidance they received from former All Black coach Graham Henry, the players’ meeting they called themselves or a combination of both, I don’t know. But full credit to them for getting their act together and regaining their fans’ respect. Their winning streak would

have been even better had Jonathan Wright not bombed tries with dropped passes against Cronulla and coach Andrew McFadden played superior attacker Tui Lolohea there instead. Still, narrowly losing by a golden point to James Maloney’s drop goal was no disgrace against the competition leaders. Good, too, to see hooker Isaac Luke approaching his best form after a slow start to the season and Shaun Johnson and Bodene Thomson score dazzling tries in the 27-18 win against the Gold Coast Titans to crown Simon Mannering’s 250th NRL appearance. A video of Johnson’s best 50 tries would make fascinating viewing for no player in the game can match his combination of balance, vision, step and pace. True, he’s not perfect, but at his best he’s absolutely brilliant and certainly doesn’t deserve the criticism he regularly receives from too many Twitter twits. Nor did Manu Vatuvei, whose anger and depression at having his young children bullied at school was understandable. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Bobbie’s garden, where everybody is welcome. When Bobbie arrived at HBH Senior Living in Howick, she was in pain and down in the dumps. Ninety-three years old at the time, Bobbie had been living with her daughter, but was in need of more specialised care and medical attention. Bobbie’s daughter was drawn to HBH by the quality of care she saw there. “The staff genuinely care about everyone. It’s like one big family and it was so reassuring to me that there were people not just looking after Mum, but taking the time to talk to her and share a laugh as well. Mum wasn’t in the greatest spirits when she arrived, but that soon changed.” “Bobbie was quick to make friends with other residents and staff, many of whom she gave nicknames to,” says HBH Director of Nursing, Chris Dunlop. “I was Big Boss!” Chris saw the change in Bobbie after a few weeks at HBH. “Often it’s this sense of community that creates happiness and new spirit in our residents. And it’s something we love to see.” Bobbie and her daughter enjoyed creating a garden outside Bobbie’s room. The simple courtyard was transformed with a table and chairs and umbrella, and each season Bobbie and her daughter would fill the colourful pots with new plants. Bobbie even organised a ‘Welcome’ sign for the shared space. Bobbie’s story is just one of many from HBH residents who are given every opportunity to make the place feel like their own home. Staff care that residents share in a community and are empowered to live life to the full. Bobbie passed away on 30 May 2016. Staff are dedicating the garden to her memory with a new sign, ‘Bobbie’s Corner’. HBH is a not-for-profit organisation known for its excellent care and highly trained staff that go the extra mile. It offers independent apartment living, rest home, hospital and respite care and a day programme. If you would like to know more about the care available at HBH contact Jenny Moore, Social Worker, HBH Senior Living, DDI 538 0803.
