Theft ‘gutting’ for BMX club By KELLY TEED
A
local BMX club is offering a $500 reward after falling victim to theft for a second time over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. The Mountain Raiders BMX Club, based at Lloyd Elsmore Park had its two new team gazebos stolen over the long weekend. The gazebos, with the club’s signage on them, cost around $3000 and were only bought by the club just before Christmas. Club president Adam Darby said the repeated theft is “really gutting.” “We’re a community facility. It’s not exclusively for the club, it’s a public facility and anyone can go and ride there and it’s a

very, very popular facility as well. “We’ve got 200 club members but [there’s] probably 10 times that of the general public who use it as well.” The club has been based at the Lloyd Elsmore since 2012 after they moved from the old Pigeon Mountain track and Mr Darby said they’d had no issues with vandalism at the new site until around 18 months ago. The first time saw their industrial grade power tools stolen, which were replaced through a combination of donations and club funds and are now stored at a property off site. The club, which operates on donations and minimal funds, has building insurance but not

contents insurance due to the high excess involved, so the stolen items were not able to be replaced under insurance. “We thought once they realised there’s not much value in there that they wouldn’t bother coming back, but we suspect the same people keep coming back,” said Mr Darby. “They probably thought we’d replace them [the tools] under insurance and came back to steal the new ones then realised they weren’t there and thought ‘what else can we steal?’” The answer was apparently the heavily branded gazebos that had been used only three times. Mr Darby said the thieves may not have been aware of the extent

of the branding on the gazebos, which were covered while in storage and may attempt to sell the frames. “There’s nothing in there [the shed] that would be that valuable to other people, but they’re things which are valuable to the club. The barbeque, which was donated by Masport, was also stolen, is our main source of fundraising for the club.” He said the club is at a loss as to how to deter the thieves, who already break into the steel shipping container which is locked with “big, expensive padlocks” and damage them in the process. “We put in so much personal time and effort, we’ve made all this stuff happen...it’s not a victimless crime.”

ongratulations to Kohl Tyler-Dunshea, first place winner of this year’s prestigious Estuary Art and Ecology Prize. The Estuary Art Awards bring together artworks by local artists who have responded to the concerns of the Estuary, highlighting the diversity and beauty of the environment as well as the need to look after it. This year’s awards ceremony, held at the Malcolm Smith Gallery at Uxbridge on Saturday, June 10, celebrated the work of Tyler-Dunshea, along with the work of other finalists including Arielle Walker and Mo Stewart. Judge Ane Tonga presented the prizes generously donated by the Howick Local Board and Gordon Harris, and in her statement for the winning work, called it an “unmissable” work. “The artist’s distinctive gathering of ubiquitous materials which includes a collection of plants, placed on a found tabletop with an ultra violet LED light suspended above, is in equal parts intriguing, elegant and, dare I say, outright beautiful. I selected this work, partly, because of its sheer ‘look at me’ audacity.
WINNER: Kohl Tyler-Dunshea’s art work, Offerings, draws attention. Photo supplied
“However, Offerings, is also rich in inflections. The participative installation work allows gallery visitors to select one of the displayed plants to be placed nearby the Tamaki Estuary or a place of their choosing. Each plant was selected for its ability to stabilise the estuary banks, improve water quality and provide habitat for wildlife. Though a seemingly small gesture, the ecological issues which underpin the participatory element of this work are made explicit: both this ‘art-
work’ and the estuary need us to activate it in order to make positive change. The work shifts from slow burn to packing a punch and in this way holds us accountable to the Estuary. “At the heart of this project is a transfusion of ecological values and Tyler-Dunshea’s ability to think beyond the gallery walls to find ways for artworks to have real-life applicability. The artist’s pursuit of the potential of art to positively impact the Tamaki Estuary is ambitious and, for this reason, awarded the first prize.”

Law & Order a priority New Zealand is currently ranked the fourth-safest country in the world MP for Botany but we want to make it number one. The Government is working hard to build a safer New Zealand. On Monday next week, June 19 at 7pm, I am hosting a public meeting about Law & Order at the Pakuranga Golf Club on Botany Road. The meeting is being held to hear from locals about law & order issues, and to share some of the work that is underway. I am being joined by the Law & Order Committee chairman from Parliament, Kanwaljt Bakshi, and our local East Counties Manukau Area Commander, Inspector Wendy Spiller, as presenters. The Government has been focused on achieving results, with new initiatives, new technology, and more resources for Police. There have been some positive results and the Government’s Better Public Services targets have shown that total crime is down by 14 per cent and the number of reoffenders reducing by 26 per cent since 2011. It’s also positive to see that youth crime is down by 32 per cent and drink driving charges have halved. We still need to do more though, and Budget 2017 announcements last month see law & order continue to be a priority. We are committing $1.2b in new operating expenditure over the next four years and $786m of capital funding. The biggest part of this funding is for our $503m Safer Communities package. This will put more Police on the beat, target offenders to ensure they are off our streets, and see a greater commitment to protecting our communities from crime. Police staff will be boosted by 1,125 with extra frontline officers across all Police districts. It will also provide resources to ensure 95% of all New Zealanders will be within 25km of a 24/7 Police presence. We have more funding going towards reducing youth offending with new initiatives such as rehabilitation and integration services. Another key area we will see is greater security support for burglary victims to prevent them from being repeatedly targeted. A continued investment in Law & Order will help to ensure that New Zealand is even safer. I hope to see you on Monday night. Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

Fight on over quarry works By Farida Master
The Clevedon Protection Society highlights its key concerns with the Fulton Hogan proposal:
A
fight has broken out over a proposal by a leading civil engineering company to expand truck movements from Clevedon Quarry by up to 1300 per cent. In decisions on the Auckland Unitary Plan, the Special Purpose – Quarry Zone was expanded and recognised as a regionally significant quarry. Fulton Hogan currently operates the quarry and now proposes to expand the quarry, previously known as Warren Fowler Quarry - and increase the annual production over several years to 2 to 3 million tonnes per year, according to the Clevedon Protection Society, a community working group with 12 core members. The group wants people to sign a petition to be presented to council. The petition, addressed to Fulton Hogan, Auckland Council, Papakura/Franklin Councillors and community board, aims to protect Clevedon from increased quarry activities. Hoping to get around 2000 signatures, the petition calls for restrictions to truck movements which Fulton Hogan has applied for. Resident Jason De Graff, who lives across the quarry at Highridge Road, says a public meeting attended by around 450 Clevedon residents was held last Tuesday at the community hall. Mr De Graff

has lived in Clevedon all his life and says he purchased a property at Highridge Road six years ago mainly because of the view. “Though the public meeting was wellattended, the locals don’t realise the massive impact the expansion of the quarry will have,” he says. He believes the value of his property is going to plummet and fears that the locals “don’t have the financial clout to fight a company like Futon Hogan. “They have millions of dollars to spend on the lawyers. We are worried that just 450 locals don’t have kind of money power to match them.” Auckland Council’s Robert Hunter, manager Projects, Practice and Resolutions, Resource Consents, has confirmed council received a resource consent application from Fulton Hogan to expand the current quarry activities at its McNicol Rd site.“It proposes to increase its annual production, over several
years, to approximately 3 million tonnes per year. The application is fully notified, and the public is able to view the application on our website and make submissions until July 5,” he says. “No decisions will be made until all of the submissions have been considered, and if appropriate, a hearing is held.”
■■ Daily truck movement increasing from an average 100 to 1306 per day (or up to 90 per hour) - a 1300 per cent increase ■■ Annual tonnage increase from 201,152 to 3,000,000 per year ■■ Operating hours increase from 10 to 15 hours Monday to Saturday (50 per cent increase), with up to 24/7 operations as required including four truck movements per hour over night ■■ Removal of up to 80,000,000 tonnes of aggregate over the next 35 years The Clevedon Protection Society says if the proposal is consented by Auckland Council, it will destroy the unique Clevedon amenity and rural lifestyle that so many people enjoy. They say that though they
are not seeking to close the quarry but want Fulton Hogan to urgently reconsider its application. They fear that the community and environment cannot sustain what is being proposed and Fulton Hogan’s proposal must be substantially reduced so as not to create irreversible environmental and social damage. They want Fulton Hogan to explore all possible alternative transport routes and options. As one of the first quarry applications under the new Unitary Plan, the protection society also “urges” council to “very carefully consider this application and recognise the deep opposition being shown by the residents of Clevedon”.
What the Clevedon Protection Society says: In 2000 the Environment Court carefully considered an application by the previous quarry owner Fowler’s, and in setting strict conditions, they established a very fair balance between the competing economic, environmental and community amenity interests. Although the new Auckland Unitary Plan places more importance on quarries to support the growth of the city, the environmental and community interests of Clevedon are just as fragile and important as they were
when the Environment Court made its ruling. The roads to and from the quarry are simply not fit for purpose, and their use to transport up to 3m tonnes of aggregate a year from the quarry will drive all other users off the road including pedestrians, walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Residents along the primary truck route will be subject to significant increases in noise, dust, vibration and road safety issues which will result in a significant loss of amenity. This application will have a dramatic
impact on a raft of outstanding community and environmental amenities including the National Te Araroa Walking Trail, the Wairoa River, various horse riding and cycle routes, the residents along McNicol and Tourist roads, Clevedon Farmers Market, Clevedon Polo and Equestrian Industry, Clevedon Village and more. The proposed quarry expansion also poses a significant environmental risk to the Wairoa River and all parts of the community which operate along its shores.

School part of tree-planting initiative By Farida Master
S
tudents and teachers of Wakaaranga School are thrilled to be part of a twofold initiative by Corrections and Auckland Council that ties in with Auckland Mayor Phil Goff’s drive of planting a million trees. Enviroschools lead teacher Kylee Hanlon-Judd along with acting principal Caroline von Sierakowski and a handful of students received a consignment of 115 Meyer lemon trees from Lynette Cave, operational director Corrections Services and Marua Kutu, service manager Manurewa Community Corrections, on Tuesday morning. Ms Hanlon says: “Wakaaranga School already has around 50 trees and it is great to be part of the sustainable employment and create a greener, healthier environment. We are excited to share the trees with a cluster of other
enviroschools in the area. “Around 3.30pm today, teachers from enviroschools will be here for beekeeping. We have two bee hives in enclosures at the back of the school and so the focus today is on beekeeping. After which, we will share the lemon trees amongst us.” Partnering with Auckland Council, this initiative involves prisoners working in prison nurseries cultivating native trees and plant seedlings, while offenders being managed in the community will do the planting. This is the first of the lot delivered to Wakaaranga School, says David Grear, manager Industries Auckland Prisons. Ms Sierakowski says the partnership is worth emulating: “This is a good model for the community to come to schools.” Corrections Northern Regional commissioner Jeanette Burns says the Million Trees initiative

will give offenders the chance to give back to the community and help create a lasting legacy that will benefit the environment for generations to come. “This project is a great fit with Corrections’ goal of reducing reoffending to make New Zealand a safer place. It gives offenders an
opportunity to become engaged in purposeful work, while serving their sentence,” says Ms Burns. “Together with Auckland Council, we will be able to create not only a greener, healthier and more beautiful environment, but offenders will have a unique chance to turn their lives around,
while making a lasting contribution to society.” Offenders will gain practical skills and formal qualifications while involved in the project, which will help them gain sustainable employment and in turn lead to safer communities. Corrections deliver horticultural training in prisons, and prisoners can earn the National Certificate in Horticulture up to level 4. Participants in the horticultural programme undertake NZQAaccredited training in a range of areas, including propagation of plants, workplace safety, composting and planting. At Auckland Prison nursery, for example, around 126,000 native trees and plants are being grown. Each year, supervised offenders on community work sentences complete a total of about nearly two million hours of free labour in New Zealand communities.
Consent sought for up to 90 truck movements per hour Leading resources and civil engineering company Fulton Hogan has lodged a resource consent application with Auckland Council to expand operations at Clevedon Quarry. Matthew MacMahon, Fulton Hogan Auckland Regional manager, says the company is responding to increasing demand for aggregate from new regional road and rail networks as well as a large increase in residential construction activity across the
Auckland region. “Clevedon Quarry, first opened in 1963, sits within a Special Purpose Quarry Zone and has been identified within the Auckland Unitary Plan as a significant regional resource of aggregate,” Mr MacMahon says. “The annual demand for aggregate from the Auckland region is forecast to increase a further 50 per cent by 2031, and Clevedon Quarry has a significant resource of high quality Greywacke rock to help
meet this need for up to 30 years,” he says. By way of example, the construction of an average New Zealand house requires 250 tonnes of aggregate, while 4000 tonnes of aggregate is required to construct a single kilometre of state highway. As more quarries close around Auckland and demand keeps increasing, more aggregate would otherwise need to come from the Waikato and Northland with additional
costs and vehicle emissions. The number of truck movements generated by Clevedon Quarry will depend on how demand ramps up over time, and truck movements can fluctuate from day to day (and even during a day). However, the number is expected to rise steadily over the next 5-10 years, and Fulton Hogan is applying for resource consent for up to 90 truck movements per hour at peak times. The main transport

After much speculation about the goings on in the middle of Picton Street, Village Jeweller recently unveiled its sparkling new shop. For more than 30 years, Chris Schweder has owned and operated Village Jeweller at various locations around Howick, and the new home looks great. Formerly the location of Silks Jewellers, 59 Picton Street now stocks stunning ranges of jewellery, watches and giftware as well as the bespoke jewellery Chris and his fellow designers are renowned for. Moving the jewellery business from one end of Picton Street to the other was no mean feat. Transporting the all-important
safe took a day and re-building the popular workshop that has the artisan jewellers on display, is still a work in progress. “The last few months were an unbelievably massive undertaking and surrounding ourselves with solutions-based thinkers kept me remarkably calm,” said Chris. Although we have heard he recently went off-grid for a welldeserved few days to recharge his creative batteries.

beach homes which are rented out during peak season at say $400 per night which owners say helps contribute to the annual outgoings on the property. The rest of the year they enjoy the use of the beach home and don’t worry about the rent they have received. What about John and Jill who have a two bedroom apartment in the city and provide the second bedroom exclusively for accommodation on Airbnb and hold to the same argument that the accommodation helps with paying the outgoings so what’s this about paying tax. Bernie says that the IRD are not sympathetic to this kind of attitude. The department have established clear guidelines and rules about what it refers to as ‘Mixed Use Assets’ and the above examples will all give rise to taxes being assessed by the IRD on the income received. Just in case you thought it won’t be a problem, the IRD does have access to all the search engines including Airbnb, Trade Me, Bookabach, etc and is already investigating taxpayers and entities identified on these internet sites but not filing returns of their income. If you haven’t filed the income,
substantial penalties apply notwithstanding the possible allegation of criminal tax evasion. Another nightmarish complication which could creep into this problem is GST. Residential rent is exempt of GST but accommodation is commercial by definition and subject to the $60,000 GST threshold. Imagine being forced to register for GST, having to not only pay GST on the rent but also on the full sale price of the property when you decide to sell. Fast Money? Yeah sure but don’t forget the taxman is watching so better to keep your nose clean and make sure you are getting the right professional advice, says Bernie. Bernie is Director of Drumm Nevatt & Associates Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors.

Obviously the booming tourist market, coupled with the desperate shortage of commercial accommodation in the hotel/ motel sector, spills over to the Airbnb model which provides an attractive alternative for those seeking quality but ‘homely’ accommodation. Take the Lions Tour as an example, Bernie knows of apartment owners who are renting their pads out for $2000 per week, way over the normal rent factor because the whole basis of assessing the tariff changes from weekly to per night rates. The rental returns can be staggering and ‘too good to be true’ but that’s the nature of the accommodation market. So is this the easy way to obtain ‘fast money’ or is it the opening up of a huge can of worms for the unsuspecting property owner? Bernie says that all rental income is specifically taxable under the Income Tax Act. However there is a common misconception that in some circumstances some rental income is not taxable. Common explanations put forward are ‘it was only a one off’ or ‘it’s really boarding income’ or it was ‘only just for the holiday period’ and the really common one is ‘but the annual outgoings on the property are far greater than the rent I’m getting so I just didn’t worry about it’. Typical scenarios include

Dear Ella Bella’s Pet Boutique Customers It has been nearly 3 years since I took the small, rundown pet shop in Howick and turned it into Auckland’s first true pet boutique and I am so incredibly proud of what it has become. The overwhelming success of Ella Bella’s has been thanks to your support and your insatiable desire for something better for you and your families - four-legged and two. It is with great sadness that I tell you we will be closing for personal reasons. Ella Bella’s is Auckland’s first boutique for pets and their humans, but it is so much more than that. It is a little piece of me. Animals have always been a part of me, and a tremendous influence over my decisions. While on the path to becoming a veterinary surgeon, I worked on a research team in Maui, Hawaii studying Humpback Whales. It was there in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, staring into the eye of a 35-ft whale, smelling the fish from her breath, that I decided my path had to change - I had to save the oceans. A week after I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science, I was on a plane back to Maui where I would spend the next two-and-a-half years of my life working as a marine naturalist - educating, inspiring, and connecting with people from all walks of life, not to mention spending a part of everyday under the water where I feel most at home. I made the decision to try to effect more change in the world by putting myself through law school – a 3-year graduate degree in the States - with a focus on environmental and natural resource law. After positions with the Natural Resource Division at the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Law Section at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, I moved down here to New Zealand to marry a kiwi who had stolen my heart. With my 30-some-odd years of animal study, and my passions for people, nutrition and the environment, I created Ella Bella’s to be a place where people could expect more when it comes to their animals and their families. A place where you could turn for experienced, personalised advice and a high-quality range of unique, hand-selected products. I have always aimed to provide unbiased animal nutrition advice and holistic, natural approaches to animal ailments. For many of us, our animals are family members, not just pets, and we need a place to turn with all of our questions, issues, worries, hiccups, and, of course, funny stories - Ella Bella’s has been that place. When my husband and I made the decision to purchase the run-down pet store in the heart of Howick Village, it was with the understanding that I would take on this business as I take on every path I have chosen - wholeheartedly and always being true to myself. The result has been overwhelming and incredible thanks to your support and your love for your animals. We had hoped after the first couple of years that we would have someone to take over managing the day-to-day of the business so that I could return to law and spend Saturdays with my family; however, that has proven more difficult than we imagined. Given the level of service and knowledge you have come to expect from us, and that I demand of us, I am unwilling to let just anyone take the reigns. You and your animals have become far too important to me. Therefore, rather than sell the business on for profit, we have made the painfully difficult decision that Ella Bella’s will close its doors at the end of business on Wednesday, June 21. I am working on a simple web site that will be linked to our facebook page to provide a transition period - especially for those of you with animals on special diets - and I will be assisting in finding other stockists for you - even if I have to beg them to carry certain products! I aim to have this site live in the next week but it will be closed from July 3-July 26. Please check our facebook page for upcoming information on retaining your food loyalty count as I will make sure you all get your free bags from our suppliers - and, if need be, I will continue our web site until every single one of you has worked through your free bag. I mean that. I will also continue to do nutrition/holistic consults on an appointment basis (phone, in person, or via Skype) and have set up an email address for any of you who, at ANY time in the future, need some advice - on anything! Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at ellabellaspetboutique@gmail.com. I care deeply about each and every one of my customers and their families and will never be more than an email away. It is with great sadness that I will say goodbye but hope that you all understand. Ella Bella’s is a little piece of me but, in being true to myself, there are other pieces that dream of dusty law books and saving the oceans so that our children - four-legged and two - will have fresh water to drink and clean beaches on which to run. I thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for all of your support and for taking such incredible care of the animals in your lives. You have all helped Ella Bella’s to thrive and made it the business it is today - from the East Auckland residents who live and breath ‘shop local,’ to those of you who have humbled us with your travel from across the North Island just to visit our little boutique. I wish you all the best for the future and please never hesitate to reach out if you need advice, want to share photos, or just want to say hi. Please, keep demanding the best for your animals. In Hawaiian, we say “O hui ho!” Until we meet again. Sincerely,Tanya Cramoy Owner, Ella Bella’s Pet Boutique ellabellaspetboutique@gmail.com

ON EXHIBITION: Artist Sofia Minson with her portrait paintings Rose of the Cross and Queen of Raa.

Art a reflection of self says Minson T
alented artist Sofia Minson grew up in east Auckland, and now out of her west Auckland studio, she’s making waves with her art all across the world. For the past six months, the 32-year-old has been working to pull together her latest exhibition, Sacred Mirrors, which opened on Tuesday night at Parnell Gallery. The exhibition, held June 13-27, is her first major solo show in five years. Due to her father’s engineering project management work, Ms Minson also spent time in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China during her childhood, and as a result, developed a strong interest in the connections between diverse people, cultures and religions. All artworks in this series bear the names of ancestors and mythological deities from Maori, Egyptian, Hindu and Christian cosmology. She hopes viewers will experience the art as a reflection of themselves – as a mirror. “I think we’re capable of every single trait in the universe, light and dark. So as an artist, if something profound or loving for example, is coming through me then I must admit, those qualities exist in me. In the same way as a viewer, as someone who appreciates art, by recognising uplifting qualities or beauty in a piece of work, it is coming through you too and is a part of you. “We all know how this feels with music, when we are moved by a song or our heart breaks over some lyrics. That is compassion and we have potential for all those emotions within ourselves, all the time.
“These are large, bold paintings that give you nowhere else to look. “They confront you and then draw you in with intricate detail. Each painting is a self portrait. While I’m painting, I’m embodying the feeling,
the characters and the traits of elbatius t’nsi egami fi rotceV elbissoP the spirit of the piece onto the canvas. I’m getting my ego out of the way and letting the message come through. You could call it channelling. It might sound lofty but I think its how all creativity happens.”

One hundred days of creativity Cockle Bay resident Elise De Silva is passionately creative – and she’s just taken up her latest challenge. It’s the 100 Days Project. The annual event requires the participant to do a creative exercise daily for 100 consecutive days. Anyone can take part, no matter their skill or ability, and this year Mrs De Silva is endeavouring to paint one painting every day in either acrylic or watercolour after finding out about the project on Facebook. “I have spent a lot of my creative energy over the past few years on my writing, and really felt I needed a break from that. I have published a picture book, an adult colouring book, and written a children’s novel. I had begun painting a lot more again and was thinking about setting myself a personal challenge to improve. When I heard about the 100 Days Project I realised this was exactly

the kind of challenge I was looking for,” she said. “I’ve produced some work that I’m really proud of, but I’ve also had some epic fails. But it doesn’t matter, because I always learn something from these ‘failures’ and it’s really all about having fun in the end.” Founded in 2011, the project is an independently run event, and since it started, more than 4500 people from all over the world have taken part.

his winter, Howick Dance Studio presents The Little Mermaid in an outstanding performance you don’t want to miss. It’s the first time the studio has performed the hit since 12 years ago, said studio manager Sharon Barber. The Little Mermaid tells the riveting fairytale story of a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and live in eternity. Choreography started back in December 2016 in preparation for the shows, held at the Hawkins Theatre in Papakura from July 1-2. It’s a massive commitment, said Mrs Barber, with volunteers putting together the costumes, rehearsals every Saturday and around 150 students involved, but she’s been impressed so far and is thoroughly looking forward to seeing it all come together. Katie Heaven, who plays Ariel in the production, said she is most excited about the opportunity to “make the character her own”. The 16-year-old has been attending Howick Dance Studio since she was five, and is now involved in a number of programmes including choreography and contemporary. She’s one of the students

Locals make book awards shortlist Finalists named in Book Awards for Children and Young Adults
T
wo local authors are among 35 finalists in this year’s New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Leonie Agnew of Pakuranga and Jennifer Beck of Howick, both award-winning authors, have been named as finalists for their works (The Impossible Boy) - in the junior fiction and (Torty and the Soldier) non-fiction categories respectively. “This year’s shortlist reminds us that books are powerful vehicles for helping children make sense of their world and gain a better understanding of themselves and others,” says convenor of judges, Pam Jones. “At times, the vividly descriptive writing was brutal and heart-breaking, providing moving portrayals of life through the eyes of children and teenagers. “All finalist titles are convincing in their realism, skilfully laced with honour and honesty throughout.” Many of the books submitted dealt with serious issues. War fea-
tured highly, alongside other topical themes like teenage pregnancy, surveillance, abuse, homelessness, racial tensions and bullying. “Coming-of-age stories and characters that are living with extended family members highlighted the meaning of family and love,” Ms Jones says. There were 152 entries submitted for the 2017 awards. The Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction finalists will capture the imagination of every young reader, either immersing them in another world or reality, giving them a problem or mystery to solve or causing a laugh-out-loud response to witty conversations, say the judges. “We’re pleased to see these books feature an equal mix of strong male and female characters from different races, ethnicities and backgrounds.” The Elsie Locke Award for NonFiction category attracted a variety of entries with topics ranging from
bugs to biographies, and history to habitats. The judges note that a clear integration of text, graphics and illustrations meant that all books in this category attained a high quality of overall design. The winners of the 2017 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults will be announced on the evening of Monday, August 14 in Wellington. powerful: Convenor of judges, Pam Jones, left and award-winning author Leonie Agnew. Local duo, Isla Macleod and Ashleigh Reid are thrilled to have made as finalists after competing with top guns in TVNZ’s web series competition, New Blood. The initiative co-founded by TVNZ and broadcast funding agency NZ On Air aims to discover New Zealand’s new blood selected by a panel of judges who choose 10 finalists. Now it is up to the public to vote for their favourite pilot episode by the end of June. The winner gets $100,000 to make the rest of the series. Former deputy head girl of Maclean College, Isla co-created Oddly Even with Ashleigh, alumni of St Kentigern College, now a successful wedding videographer. The 12-minute pilot, on

They are all Kiwi emerging bands and are friends of friends,” she says. The voting is open from June 1-29 on TVNZ On Demand and the winner of the finalists is decided by public vote. “We are up against teams that have Shortland Street actors as well as Billy T award winners and writers for Jono and Ben. So we need all the support we can,” she says.

It’s a refreshing change from the glut of American and British sitcoms that hit New Zealand television screens. Isla says: “There is nothing to watch on television for people my age, apart from a few, like New Zealand TV drama, Outrageous Fortune which has stopped running. “This was a perfect opportunity to create something for young Kiwis and pursue something we love doing.” Having graduated from NZ Broadcasting School in Canterbury along with co-director Ashleigh, Isla says she is grateful that all crew members, also friends from Broadcasting School worked free. As did the cast, that comprised of graduates from top acting schools in the country. “We didn’t pay a single

Additional police for Beachlands Two more police officers are coming to Beachlands. Recently it was announced that additional Police will be allocated to the Counties Manukau area over the next four years, as part of the 1125 new Police Officers and specialist staff to be appointed across the country. This is part of the National ledGovernment $503 million investment to improve the safety of our communities. Police have now announced that the Hunua Electorate will, over the next 12 months, get two additional police staff for Beachlands and three for Waiuku, to focus on emergency response and volume crime. Other police staff will be deployed across Auckland to specifically target issues including youth crime and community work, and to staff the 24/7 Eagle helicopter. The allocation decisions have been made by District Commanders, based on crime patterns and police demand across the region. “Hunua is a rapidly growing region, and the additional staff will help build police capacity and support local policing teams,” says Hunua MP Andrew Bayly. This is just the allocation for the first of four years. The three Auckland Police Districts, including Counties Manukau, will see a total increase of 56 staff over this time, with remaining staff being allocated over the next three years based on need. The National-led Government is focused on delivering a more responsive police service, prevent harm and victimisation, resolve more crimes, and more effectively target crime in our community. Twelve new mobile police stations will also be set up around New Zealand, and there will be new challenging targets for police including 98 per cent of home burglaries attended within 48 hours and one minute faster emergency response times. The first recruits will start police college next month and be on the beat in October.
Minister: Funding will help prevent violent robberies P
olice minister Paula Bennett has announced that $1.8 million will be made available for robbery prevention at dairies, superettes and small local businesses. Businesses assessed as being at high risk of violent robberies will have the opportunity to apply for co-funding to support the purchase of panic and high volume interior alarms, DNA spray, fog cannons and time safes, she said. The money comes from the Justice Sector Fund and will be aimed specifically at small
family or individually-owned businesses at risk that require financial assistance to install better security measures. “Police will fund up to 50 per cent of the cost of the security measures. In some exceptional circumstances, they may pay a larger share. It’s expected all of the 500600 businesses considered high risk will be eligible for co-funding.” Shop owners will also be offered advice on how altering the layout of their store could make them feel safer. Over the past three months,
police officers in Auckland have visited more than 1000 businesses to discuss their concerns and provide prevention advice, as well as carrying out crime prevention seminars and increasing the number of officers in highrisk areas. “We’ve listened to the concerns of shopkeepers, that’s why we’ve put aside this money to be used for co-funding for a range of security and prevention measures,” said Mrs Bennett. “We’re taking this issue seriously. We want to stop
these awful crimes from happening to innocent victims in the first place and make sure these cowards are off the streets.” This funding follows the start of ‘There’s nothing good about stolen goods’ – a month-long police campaign this June targeting businesses or individuals receiving stolen property from robberies. Rewards have been offered through Crimestoppers for those who provide information which leads to a successful prosecution.

Where have all the letters gone? Upon driving up the main highway into Howick and approaching Stockade Hill on Ridge Road with its spectacular and panoramic views, I wonder if our many visitors ask - “Where are we?” Once upon a time, that question was quickly answered by reading the ‘Welcome to Howick’ sign which adorned the stone wall at the entrance of Stockade Hill, in conjunction with the local service group’s insignia. I have just returned from Pakuranga Plaza, buying some stationery items from Whitcoulls. The staff there told me that the store would be closing this month - the lease is up (and I suspect that the Plaza is asking for a much higher rental). So I guess the nearest Whitcoulls will be at Botany, not a lot of help to some of our nondriving people. There are now several empty shop spaces (at the Plaza), have been for months, and I wonder if the Plaza if going to turn into a mall like Chinatown, on Ti Rakau Drive? Tricia B Pakuranga
Useless expenditure
Donald Trump has announced, true to his election promise, that America is pulling out of the Paris Climate Change agreement. It was based , he said, on a hoax. I have believed that to be true from the outset. Ought not people everywhere be demanding scientific evidence to show that the causes of change in our climate are indeed man-made and that the billions of dollars to be levied on us offer some sort of guarantee of improvement? Is that not sound business practice? I witnessed a debate on tv some years ago when Helen Clark and her cronies ridiculed, insulted and besmirched the reputations of a team of independent scientists whose studies showed that the causes of global warming were not man-made. Our Government offered not one shred of evidence to support their stance , but repeatedly claimed that the ‘science was settled’. Since then we have witnessed the same bullying tactics repeatedly by media and governments who have signed
insignia remains but the letters welcoming people to Howick Village have mysteriously vanished. Where have all the letters gone? As our visitors travel along Ridge Road enjoying the pristine views of the sea and the glorious surroundings of our charming and historic village, do they wonder all the while “Am I in Shangri La?” We have a proud history which dates back to the first settlement up to the hoax. MP Nick Smith once explained that we would be unpopular with our trading partners if we stood out in disagreement. In other words, we are not willing to say that ‘ the emperor has no clothes’ as Donald Trump is claiming, but would rather be duped of billions of dollars in line with the other partner countries, who are similarly motivated by fear. That is not leadership but cowardice. Can any of our elected representatives present to us evidence that would justify the commitment to billions of dollars of useless expenditure, when they deny the homeless, the sick and so many other pressing needs because they say we can’t afford the money. Harvey Rosieur Howick
Climate change not down to man Our climate is changing all the time, it is not static. For those of us who are interested in its changeable patterns, can I suggest that you Google Dr Don Easterbrook and his presentation to the (Washington State) Senate (also Comex Joe, ex Greenpeace activist). He gives a reasoned reply with clear graphs based on reliable data. He makes the point that man is NOT responsible for climate change, that the forces at work shaping our climate are immense and largely outside our human control. The CO2 content is .04 per cent of the molecules present in the air we breathe; so even a two- fold increase is miniscule in the overall picture. CO2 is a necessary and important ingredient in the growth of plants and trees. It is not the ‘bogie man’ of global warming as the media would repeatedly tell us, but important for the growth of all our
of Fencibles arriving in Howick in 1847. Our residents strongly connect with their local identity and there exists a powerful bond amongst Howickians to embrace and preserve their historical and cultural heritage. The “Welcome to Howick” signage should be re-instated to pronounce the prominence of Howick Village and as a welcome to our glorious community that is Howick. Wally Rice & Marilyn Bakker Howick food crops. Any Greenhouse heating of earth’s atmosphere is better understood as being due to water vapour not CO2. All Easterbrook’s data points to us being in a 15 year cooling period anyway, not a warming period. Big World Government (read Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) wants to extract more taxes out of you and me via these carbon credits, creating in the process another layer of world bureaucracy. They will do nothing to change climate variations or global warming but will surely pay big salaries for big bums sitting in big offices somewhere being paid for by Mr and Mrs Citizen. Shellfish stocks hammered As a resident of Cockle Bay for over 25 years, I am extremely worried and concerned about the sustainability of our shellfish at Cockle Bay Beach. Over a recent weekend, 700plus were seen gathering shellfish, mainly cockles. Each low tide during the week it is not uncommon to see 50 or 60 people collecting. That could be around 50,000 cockles in one week. The open season is for five months - May 1 to September 30 - and most gatherers seem to be only taking their daily limit of 50 but it is the sheer numbers that worry me. Shellfish are a vital part of the marine environment and not only clean the water, but provide food for fish. What are your thoughts on a solution? Barry Wood Cockle Bay

Ladies, come and support a great cause Bellyful helps families around New Zealand when they need it most – at dinnertime! We deliver pre-cooked meals to families with new babies and families with young children who are struggling with illness (critically or terminally ill immediate family member), and thanks to our wonderful local supporters, our service is free. We know how hard those first few months with a newborn can be, and that’s before adding other children and career demands to the mix. A delivered home cooked meal can be a real sanity-saver. We are not a food bank — our service is appreciated by corporate mums as much as those at home. Bellyful East Auckland have been very

TV episode filmed at Howick Historical Village Following Queens Birthday weekend, Howick Historical Village sprang to life with a vengeance as cameras rolled and actors delivered their lines during the filming of an episode of the murder mystery series, The Brokenwood Mysteries. Now entering its fourth season, this compelling New Zealand ‘who dunnit’ television series has achieved sales worldwide, averaging 3.4 million viewers per episode just in France alone where it is particularly popular. The series is set in a fictional New Zealand country town called Brokenwood where Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) probes murder mysteries, aided and abetted by DC Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) and DC Breen (Nic Sampson). Director Murray Keane commented re working on location at the Howick Historical Village. “It is absolutely awesome,” he said, raising his hand towards the cloudless, powder blue, winter sky. “I came here over 10 years ago for one day’s filming of a children’s programme, Secret Agent’s Men. “I loved the location then and even more so this time round as we have considerably more time here. “The atmosphere is brilliant. And we are so grateful to you guys (Howick Historical Village) for helping us out.”

School embraces Chinese culture By Farida Master

urious and happy, young faces watched Chinese parents and grandparents make warm comfort food on a cold Thursday morning as they stuffed dumplings with a filling and expertly sealed them. As part of the Chinese Cultural Day, Pigeon Mountain Primary School had organised a host of activities that included dumpling making, tai chi, calligraphy, paper cutting and table tennis. Principal Ian Dickinson says that with 44 per cent of students at Pigeon Mountain
Primary of Chinese origin, the school embraces different cultures and encourages parents and grandparents to participate in a range of school activities. He informs that the primary school is part of cluster with Macleans College and Bucklands Beach Intermediate that shares a Chinese resource teacher who helps students learn Mandarin, a compulsory language at school. Libby Banks, a teacher who organised the Chinese Cultural Day says the celebration is part of International Languages Exchanges and Pathways

Some regular Howick Historical Village volunteers added authenticity to the setting by acting as extras. Colonial soldiers and villagers dressed in Victorian garb mingled with cast and crew, at times watching spell-bound as snippets of the mystery story unravelled before their eyes. The Brokenwood Mysteries is made with support of NZ on Air and will be returning to Prime TV for series four later in 2017.

Interestingly, most of the teachers at Pigeon Mountain Primary are qualifying in languages at NCEA level as part of their professional development, in order to explore other worlds through collaboration and languages. As Ms Banks who has been on educational trip to Korea and a school trip China says: “With languages we can travel and understand others better. The taskforce was set up by Mayor Phil Goff early this year with a terms of reference asking it to identify barriers and constraints to building new homes in Auckland at a speed and scale needed to meet the demand caused by population growth. The taskforce membership brought together developers, builders, bankers, economists, architects and central and local government officials. “This Report sets out strategic changes needed to address Auckland’s housing crisis,” Mr Goff said. “It is important for central and local government and the industry to analyse and respond to the report’s recommendations. Pak College scrape through for win P
akuranga College’s 1st XV held on for a welldeserved 20-18 win against Papaptoetoe High School at the weekend. The premiers took on Papatoetoe High School’s 1stXV in an exciting 1B competition match. The game was held at Pakuranga College in almost perfect conditions. Although the competition was into week 5, this was Pakuranga College’s first home game of the season, so the stakes were high. Going into the game Pakuranga College was in second place whilst Papatoetoe High School was third. With the round robin coming close to an end and both teams needing wins to stay in the top four, it was sure to be a physical and exciting game by both teams. The game started with Pakuranga coming out firing with early possession inside Papatoetoe’s 22. After a wellexecuted lineout and mid-field crash there was a massive gap out on the side-line. Pakuranga was quick to react to this with fast hands along the line before getting the ball to number 8 Carter Hackett who outran the Papatoetoe defenders and scored in the corner. The try was then converted by Pakuranga’s first five eighth Michaile Van Wyk. Quickly after the restart Pakuranga made their way back into Papatoetoe’s 22 where a penalty was awarded after a high tackle. Van Wyk took advantage of the penalty and extended Pakuranga’s lead to 10-0 after 10 minutes. After a slow start Papatoetoe found their way back into the game with multiple scoring opportunities that was cut short by Pakuranga’s “green wall” defence. Half way into the first half and with light rain coming down, both teams
exciting game: Pakuranga College’s Jarvis Kahi makes some room. Times photo Wayne Martin
started to make mistakes both on attack and defence. With many drop balls and fifty-fifty passes on Pakuranga’s side made an easy path for Papatoetoe to march up the field and score a try through the forwards. Papatoetoe managed to convert the try making the score 10-7 in favour of Pakuranga college at half-time. After a motivational speech by Pakuranga’s coach Darren Jardine at the break, the Pakuranga boys looked fired up. Scoring quickly in the first half due to some individual brilliance by Van Wyk and some passing along the line, Pakuranga’s centre Ethan Rakiraki scored the first try of the second half by dotting down in the corner. A missed conversion put the score at 15-7. Shortly after the restart Pakuranga found themselves crossing the try line again. Fullback Ethan Laban ran through untouched after a very well executed set piece of a midfield scrum. Another missed kick put the score at 20-7. However, Papatoetoe were not finished.
The visitors took another slow start to the half but found themselves back in it after two penalty kicks inside Pakuranga’s 22 after some silly mistakes by the home side. The score was 20-13 with 15 minutes left to play. In the last 15 minutes Pakuranga found themselves with little ball possession and constantly defending inside their half. The “green wall” stood strong by not letting anyone past until they were caught off guard by a quick tap penalty and excellent hands by Papatoetoe to score in the corner. With the score at 20-18 with a conversion to come, tensions were high. With the ball in an ideal location and Papatoetoe’s kicker yet to miss a kick, things did not look good for Pakuranga. However, the kick sailed wide making the final score 20-18 in Pakuranga’s favour. This becomes Pakuranga fourth win of the season and third in a row. Pakuranga’s next home game is against Mangere College on June 17 with a 12pm kick-off. Carter Hackett

Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s premiers have fallen to an in-form Suburbs side despite a fighting come back in the second half. The prems lost 24-19 having trailed 2-16 at the break. “Yes it was a close game but unfortunately we fell short,” said premieres coach Pita Alatini. “I couldn’t fault the effort by our lads as they dug deep in difficult situations to give us a chance to win the game. “We made crucial errors again and when you play a quality side like Suburbs you will pay the consequence. The prems came away with a valuable point which keeps the side in touch with the top teams. “However we will turn our attention to Eden at home this weekend which we have to win.”

ties need to be provided in order for the build to occur.” The report addresses the role that the Housing Infrastructure Fund must play in allowing this to happen in Auckland and recommends the broadening of revenue sources for council including road pricing and devolution of funds from central government. “It promotes the potential to use other sources of funding such as targeted rates on those realising windfall profits from rezoning and new infrastructure so they contribute to the cost of that infrastructure. “It raises concerns that changes in lending policies from banks
and regulatory agencies could start to act as a drag on construction. “Thirdly, the report makes a series of recommendations on consenting and risk management to facilitate housing being put in place. “It recommends a warranty and insurance scheme to give assurance to consumers and to allow council to be more supportive of innovation in building methods. “It calls for the Consenting Made Easy process being trialled by council to be fully implemented, and also says the building code and other legislation such as the Unit Titles Act
requires an update. “Also noted in the report is the advantage of innovation such as prefabrication to improve the speed and quality of construction and lowering costs. “It points a way forward to better tackle the problem of housing shortage and affordability which Aucklanders and New Zealanders have signalled are major problems calling for new approaches. “This report reflects the consensus findings of a cross-section of individuals representing groups across the housing industry. It deserves the close attention of central and local government,” Mr Goff said.

Although the landscape of East Auckland has changed drastically in the last few decades, Perry takes pride in the fact that he can recognise a house that has had the Botany Carpet experience. As a local he is only too happy to help local businesses with their carpeting needs. Having advertised with the Times from the very beginning, Perry says it has served him well. “I always have supported the Times because it covers our catchment area.” If you’re looking at spending thousands on your carpet replacement, do it once, do it right. Wonderful new carpets for super hot prices and excellent service to boot have resulted in hundreds of satisfied households. Owner Perry Child has been in the flooring industry for well over 30 years and has established a name for himself through his business in Torrens Road (off Burswood and Ti Rakau Drives) which has been serving locals for 19 years. A second-generation flooring expert who studied at Pakuranga College, Perry’s interest in carpets was cultivated from a young age. Since beginning his career, he’s floored hundreds of homes, offices, garages and buildings throughout Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and far beyond. Lions ready to rumble T
he British and Irish Lions rugby team served the All Blacks a timely warning with their brutal 12-3 triumph against the Super Rugby pacesetter Crusaders last Saturday night. It wasn’t pretty but it was tough, with the fierce tackling and accurate bombing raids sparked by Connor Murray’s boot leaving a bruising legacy among the disjointed home side. Consequently, the Crusaders failed to make many turnovers even though they had champion burglar Matt Todd in their midst. And with French referee Mathieu Raynal caning their All Blacks front row, there was little joy to be had in the scrums. Instead. with Connor and firstfive Owen Farrell directing the Lions’ aerial attack, the only way the Crusaders managed to emulate their unbeaten Super Rugby deeds was through their brave and accurate defence. Four penalties to one in favour of the victors told the story of two teams who gave their all but did not have the imagination or flair to concoct one try. Hopefully, electrifying Maori All Black backs Damian McKenzie, Nehe Milner-Skudder and James Lowe will demonstrate their class to better effect in Rotorua on Friday night. But their forwards will need to improve immensely on their feeble effort
Agnew’s Angle against Munster late last year. Against the Crusaders, the Lions proved they are ready to rumble in the three-test series against the All Blacks, starting June 24. Whether several All Blacks will be match fit is a moot point with so many plagued by injuries in recent months. Top of the list are Kieran Read and Dane Coles, our two best attacking forwards when at their peak. Read won’t be risked against Samoa at Eden Park on Friday night after a long spell since smashing his thumb and hooker Coles will be lucky to see any game time after being side-lined for much of the season with a severe concussion. Ryan Crotty has rib damage, Jerome Kaino has had knee surgery, and Liam Squire, Israel Dagg, Ben Smith and Lima Sopoaga have all missed games through one complaint or another. Still there have been heartening aspects, especially with the deserved promotion of 20-yearold fullback Jordie Barrett and prolific try-scoring midfield back
Ngani Laumape. With Jordie the best goalkicker in the squad, it will be interesting to see whether the All Black selectors will play him at fullback and move Ben Smith to the wing as a counter to the accuracy of Farrell’s deadly boot. It would be a huge gamble, especially with Smith regarded as the world best No 15, but young Barrett is a huge talent who has met every challenge thus far. The other 20-year-old who continues to excite is Rieko Ioane who, with a bit of luck, could have extended his solo try in the Blues 22-16 win against the Lions to four. It’s also been a long wait for Sonny Bill Williams, who since rupturing his Achilles at the Rio Olympics sevens, has rediscovered his magic touch. The offloads Steven Luatua and Williams executed in the lead up to Ihaia West’s match winning try were pure class. The fact the Lions’ second stringers fall well short of their best team should not detract from the major contributions made by Waisake Naholo and Malakai Fekitoa to the rousing Highlanders 23-22 win in Dunedin on Tuesday night, achieved without nine of their internationals. Hornets sting Sea Eagles
The Howick Hornets came away victorious when they played the Papakura Sea Eagles at Paparoa Park on Saturday, with a 34-16 win. Chairman John Hancock said the match was a special occasion for the Hornets as whenever the two sides play at the Hornets home ground, the Lia Johnston memorial is presented to the home side. Lia was a stalwart of the club who unfortunately
passed away early last year. The win leaves the Hornets second equal on the FOX Memorial ladder after the first round of nine games. Centre Roydon Gillette was hugely impressive for the Hornets, crossing the line for four tries on Saturday. The next home game for the Hornets is against the Glenoa Bears. Kick-off is 2:30pm on Saturday 1 July.
Fencibles U17s fall 2-1 The Fencibles United 17th Grade Metro Team played strongly as they were challenged by the New Caledonia U17s last week. The match, held at William Green Domain, was to assist with their preparation for the U17 World Cup to be held in India in October 2017. Fencibles started well in the match and after 25 minutes it was 0-0. They conceded a free kick on the edge of their penalty box and New Caledonia nearly powered the ball into the corner of the net for 1-0. With a focus on defence, Fencibles held out the visitors until half time at 1-0. A word from coach Grant Robertson at half time led to the team altering their structure and giving the game a crack, allowing them to be more competitive in the second half. Unfortunately, a defensive error pushed them down 2-0 but continued their proactive approach to the game. This was rewarded by a goal by Danny Mackenzie after great individual work from Felix Thannavy. This gave the team a lift and allowed them to take control of the match. They were awarded a penalty and a chance to level the
game up. Unfortunately, the penalty was saved by the New Caledonian keeper. Fencibles continued to push and dominate but were unable to get the goal to even the game up. The final result was 2-1 to New Caledonia.
