ONE MAN’S RAVINGS...
Weet-Bix, coffee and a little too much Trump for brekky “M
ummy, who’s Donald Trump?” Eddie mumbled, small Weet-Bix flakes fluttering from his face. (He liked five in his bowl because it would make him an All Black). “Oh, are you studying the US elections?” “Nah. One of the teachers at school said he was a bloody muppet and looked like a clown.” “EDWARD! You cannot say that word. Ever!” “What’s wrong with saying muppet?” “Young man. You know perfectly well what I’m talking about. We do not swear in this house. I am appalled. Never say that word again, do you hear me!” Eddie mashed up his Weet-Bix a bit, his lower lip protruding as he did so.. “I’m sorry mummy. I like muppets. And clowns.” “Well, let’s not tell your father about your poor
choice of language okay.” “What’s wrong with Mr Trump?” “Can we change the subject darling? We have to leave for school soon. Finish your breakfast.” “Is he a bad man?” “Well not in the strictest sense of the word. He’s just got views that many people think are wrong.” “The teachers said he could be the next President of the United States. That’s pretty cool.” “Um...there’s a bit more to it than that,” she said, without much conviction. “More what? How can a clown be president?” “Eddie, the man is a bigot and a xenophobe who has more money than sense and he’s an embarrassment to his own Republican party.” Mum was now looking out the kitchen window at nothing in particular, sipping on her double-strength plunger coffee. “What’s a bigot?”
“It’s a person who is intolerant of other people’s beliefs.” “I don’t know what that means mummy.” “Don’t worry. Nor do a lot of Americans. In simple terms, he doesn’t like people that are different from him; and other people who feel that way are jumping on the Trump train.” “He has a train? Awesome.” “I don’t think so but he does have a Boeing 757 called Trump Force One. Ridiculous really but that’s a billionaire for you. He even has his own university which is in a lot of trouble. The man’s a menace and cannot be allowed to be President.” “I want a plane and a university when I grow up.” “Yes, well Mr Trump hasn’t grown up. I mean whose foreign policy includes building a “big, fat wall” to keep out the Mexicans? And he wants to ban
Muslims from entering the US. He’s not keen on the Chinese either because they could destabilise the economy.” “How big is a 757 mummy?” Eddie had nearly polished off his Weet-Bix. Mum topped up her coffee. “It’s almost a jumbo darling. It could all come undone anyway. He may be the presumptive nominee but that still has to be formally ratified at the Republican convention next month. Et tu Brute!” “What are you on about mummy?” “They still have a chance of getting rid of this man before it’s too late. The race isn’t over yet.” “Are there others in this race?” “A woman...Hillary Clinton. Her husband used to be President.” “Does she have a 757?” “No but she’s not exactly struggling darling. For a
moderate, progressive she’s doing ok. I read she was worth around $15 million. And she has everyone from Oprah to George Soros and other billionaires in her campaign corner. Compare that to Trump who could be worth anything up to $10 billion...it’s obscene.” “So whoever has the most money wins, just like poker right?” “It’s complicated darling.” “Oh, Mummy, are you a bigot?” “No Edward darling. But I suspect your teachers are right. Trump’s a bloody muppet. Let’s go.”

Ram raiders caught
Will my card be lost for life? Get activitated By Marianne Kelly
C
ounties Manukau Police are following some very strong lines of enquiry after a spate of ram raid burglaries in the eastern suburbs recently. A number of commercial premises have experienced ram raids in which stolen vehicles have been driven through the doors and then stock loaded into other waiting vehicles. Counties Manukau east area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller told media last week seven ram-raids were reported across Botany, Pakuranga, Burswood, Flat Bush and East Tamaki. Kathmandu in Botany Town Centre was hit twice within a week. Police have already arrested three offenders for these offences and are following strong lines of enquiry. “Often these offences are linked and we are gathering the evidence on the people we believe are responsible,” says Sgt John Roberts of the Coun-
“AT now has my $15 and my card – it’s been frustrating and time consuming.” Meanwhile queues of seniors continue to line up at the Botany Town Centre Auckland Transport customer service centre to have the transport concession loaded on their SuperGold AT HOP card. They are opting to complete the process in person rather than doing it online or by post. Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart has told AT there will be a “tsunami of problems”. One man has told her AT would not accept his email address and was told a number of times he needed to change the password on his computer. “You can imagine, he is really up tight,” she says. “I think this could have been made a lot easier for our seniors.” Gold AT HOP cards can be purchased at the Botany AT service centre, Pakuranga Lotto, Paper Plus Highland Park, Bucklands Superette and Paper Plus Howick. The card can be registered online via an email address. Alternatively a form can be downloaded and posted to AT along with copies of an ID. The travel concession can be loaded on the card online, by post or in person. AT says it has “Swap to AT HOP” customer information packs that identify the options a customer can follow to obtain an AT HOP card and load a SuperGold concession. They can be ordered online or by phoning 0800 AT GOLD or 0800-284-653.
I have a SuperGold card. I don’t ever use public transport and there are many thousands of us who don’t. So I asked Auckland Transport if I didn’t register before July 1, would I never be able to get the SuperGold AT HOP card concession for the rest of my life? A spokesman says: “No, you can still apply at any time. But the concession won’t work unless your card is activated.” So, I asked, if I do register before July 1 but don’t do the validation travel within 60 days because I don’t use public transport, will I lose my $15 and my SuperGold AT HOP card forever? “Yes,” the spokesman says. But, he adds: “Get them to activate your card when you get it.” Unfortunately Howick ward councillor Dick Quax, and no doubt many others who don’t use public transport, missed the point that they must take a trip on public transport within 60 days of their concession being loaded to activate the card. If the card is not activated seniors will lose the $5 registration fee and free travel concessions. Having bought his card for $15 and registered it online, Mr Quax noticed that the $5 he understood was to be loaded onto his card did not show up on his account. AT told him he must provide his card to the AT Botany service centre where he was told it was invalid.

ties Manukau Police Tactical Crime Unit. Sgt Roberts says they had already laid charges against several offenders and more charges and arrests were likely. “It is hugely expensive and inconvenient for these businesses who are targeted in this way and we will have a number of these offenders in custody
soon,” said Sgt Roberts. Police are asking the public to report any suspicious behaviour, especially in the early hours of the morning around closed business premises. ■■ Any information can be provided to the Tactical Crime Unit on 261-1300 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
Fisherman survives 15m cliff fall A fisherman who fell off a cliff near Kawakawa Bay on Sunday is in a stable condition. The man had to be winched to safety after falling down a 15 metre cliff, according to northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips. The man, believed to be aged in his late 40s, fell from the walking track at Sugar Loaf Point, Waiti Bay at
about 10.30 am on Sunday. Mr Phillips said the man was initially reported to have suffered Status One or critical injuries. The man was then winched to safety by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and flown to Middlemore Hospital. The Coastguard was called to assist with the rescue but was not needed. Howick Volunteer Coastguard’s
operations officer Alan Martin told the Times: “Howick Rescue 1 was used as a stand-off resource to be used if there was an issue with the medivac. The boat crew had no contact with the victim. “Howick was stood down at approximately 12.30 pm.” On Tuesday a Middlemore Hospital spokesman confirmed the injured man was in a stable condition.

Tile company offers superior service M
C Tiles and Distribution doesn’t simply supply and install wall and floor tiles. The company prides itself on being a solutions based business, says company owner John Ryan. “Our team doesn’t ‘tell’ – we advise and show the customer options to provide a solution to fit their need,” he explains. MC Tiles and Distribution was started about 30 years ago. The tile importer, retailer and distributor has now grown to offer retail outlets in Howick and Albany, and a distribution centre in Pakuranga. John purchased the company three months ago which he owns with business partner Tristram Van der Meijden. John brings an extensive background in sales and marketing, including previous experience in the construction industry to the company, while Tristram has finance expertise. MC Tiles and Distribution offers distinctive, unique products in a variety of module sizes and finishes. Quality products from highly regarded European manufacturers are selected with hundreds of product lines available. There are also options from selective manufacturers throughout China for price sensitive projects. Superior service is the com-
pany’s key point of difference. Large amounts of stock are held to cater to needs at short notice. The company will even hand deliver product to a site if required. Because of its service, MC Tiles and Distribution counts among its varied clients many of the major Auckland group house building companies including Fletcher Living, Finesse Residential, Stonewood and Landmark Homes, and Taylor Construction. John says that MC Tiles and Distribution is always seeking to respond to customer demands for enhanced service options.
A recent innovation, aimed at architects and designers, is the establishment of a specialised architectural showroom at Pakuranga. Open by appointment only, the show room allows architects and designers to bring their clients to view tiles in a relaxed environment. As the show room is located next to the company’s distribution centre, tile variations and patterns can be examined and larger quantities of tiles can be laid out so the client can get a good idea of the finished result, John explains.
This show room complements the company’s retail outlets where any member of the public can purchase tiles. These outlets also offer dedicated trade centres supplying a variety of tiling accessories, adhesives, waterproofing systems and advice, for professionals and DIY customers alike. Customers also have the choice of shopping from the comfort of their own homes. The mobile division of the company is a keystone to the business and provides a hassle-free solution for the customer who is too
busy to shop around. The service covers the Auckland area and an appointment with one of the consultants is obligation and cost free. To offer clients a seamless service MC Tiles and Distribution can also provide installation. This division of the business is experiencing strong growth because of increased demand for a continuous service from sale to finished result. It’s all part of MC Tiles and Distribution’s focus on offering a solution based offering to its valued customers.
For winter ‘16 MC Tiles are introducing METAL STYLE An innovative collection of porcelain tiles from Italy that emphasizes the concept of “worn metal” as a stylistic and directional look for the home. On walls or floor the three finishes, Calamine, Revival and Corten can enhance any environment. METAL STYLE is the choice for clients that want to stand out from the crowd and express their personality as trendsetters not followers.

Keeping science real by unlocking young curious minds to be discovered. And there’s every possibility NZ’s special fungi could be prominent in the search for new antibiotics. Ms van der Spuy, a science teacher at Macleans College, and Stuart Read, a science specialist teacher from Bucklands Beach Intermediate, are coming to the end of a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE)-funded leadership programme run by the Royal Society of New Zealand.

“The purpose of the programme is to enhance the teaching of science within our schools and communities,” says Ms van der Spuy. “This is because we live in a rapidly-changing world where, regardless of their career path, everyone needs to be a scientifically literate citizen.” The teachers have spent six months working within scientific organisations – Mr Read at the University of Auckland Sports Medicine and

t’s not very often that there is a celebration and morning tea organised at the purpose-built women’s prison in Wiri. But Tuesday morning was a special day as Howick local Mary Ann France was honoured by the Auckland Region Women’s Correction Facility for her selfless work engaging women prisoners and teaching them a new skill over the last eight years. The beautifully-designed, circular prison Marae was the venue where volunteers who work with Mrs France gather after going through a thorough security check. The Quilt-Stitch group has been running Friday and Saturday sessions at the prison for the last eight years and have achieved extraordinary success, said volunteer coordinator Janice Naden, who nominated the former teacher and mother-of-six for the Volunteer Recognition Award. New junior college coming on stream By Farida Master
thought-provoking: Jeremy Kyle has received commissions from global brands including Under Armour, Dior and the UN. Times photo Wayne Martin
All the world’s a stage By Farida Master
Y
oung illustrator and graphic designer Jeremy Kyle’s mother couldn’t contain her excitement when she found a letter in their mailbox addressed to her son from basketball legend Michael Jordon. “Look, who you’ve got a letter from!” she piped up, as she handed over the sealed envelope to her son, 23, in the middle of the Times interview. Her excitement was contagious but the young illustrator and artist who was recently commissioned to do a series of artworks for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, decided to savour the moment later. However, he couldn’t resist whisking out a prized 50th anniversary game basketball autographed by the Chicago Bulls team that he received in the post a few days earlier. “I have been in touch with Michael Jordon personally and told him how he is my role model. I do believe that you can achieve the impossible—like he did. I am doing it in my own way in the
creative field,” he said confidently about breaking personal and international boundaries. “I do believe I am on the threshold of a world stage.” Apart from being commissioned by powerhouse brands like Under Armour, Dior, 2Pac Brand and Chicago Bulls, Jeremy’s latest and most challenging assignment is for the United Nations. “The UN project where all the world leaders came together has been a very meaningful one. It was for the first ever World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul on May 23-24, where the UN asked me to create a series of artworks explaining secretary general Ban Ki-moon’s vision for human kind. “The vision is called ‘The Agenda for Humanity’,” says Jeremy pointing to the artworks that has international media contacting him for his views. “When creating this series of works, I wanted to convey a real sense of unity and diversity while cultivating a sense of awe in the viewer. “I have kept the concepts simple (not abstract) yet thought-pro-
voking to ensure that all people understand and relate to the work. The series speaks of the Agenda for Humanity that articulates five values: prevent and end conflict; respect the rules of war; leave no one behind; working different to end need; invest in humanity. The New York Times along with History Channel has also been on long Skype chats with the local artist that has culminated in another major project. Jeremy was recently commissioned to do eight illustrations rebooting the all-time popular multi-generational saga in the 70s, ‘Roots’ that still inspires American art and society. Known for its poignant and painful portrayal of an AfricanAmerican family over generations, it’s inspired millions of Americans to explore and embrace their roots. Jeremy has been asked to visually communicate the artistic theme that traces personal identities, through lucid water colours. He is working on an exhibition that will give locals and the media a glimpse of his work.
The air is filled with excitement as fingers fly frantically off the keyboard. Three members of the leadership team of the new Ormiston Junior College talk in staccato sentences as they get the progress report for the Board of Trustees off the ground. There is a buzz with plenty of brain-storming, strategic planning and research happening. Colourful post -it notes stick together on the walls along with flow charts, and posters that stand testimony to the beehive of activity at the temporary makeshift office at the Ormiston Senior College. The new junior college will cater to year 7-10 and accommodate 1050 students. The frenetic building activity is proof the college scheduled to throw its gates open early next year - is well on track with a state-of-theart auditorium that can seat up to 500 people. “There is a cricket pitch, a full gymnasium with spring up floor, integrated spaces for chemistry labs, technology and robotics,” informs Vivienne Mallabar from the leadership team who has been a facilitator at Evaluation Associates supporting development of Leadership and Assessment within schools across Auckland. Learning leader (principal) Luke Sumich, his second start-up school, is showing a group of visiting educationists from Napier around. The college is a talking point of innovative ideas and methods of teaching. Kat Liu Asomua, former head of independent learning at Alfriston College and a Teach NZ Study Award recipient says: “We are very
lucky that the Ministry of Education has invested a lot in us.” The dynamic leadership team recently visited schools in Vancouver, Canada for professional development and also spent time visiting special character schools in Seattle—which are part of the Big Picture Schools. The network of Big Picture Learning schools in the United States work together in communities to reshape education. The new models of schools challenge the traditional approach to teaching. “That’s why we are not called teachers who traditionally talk down to students but are learning leaders who are involved in a professional relationship of learning together,” says Ms Liu who is completing her Master’s thesis on Innovative Learning Environment Curriculum Design. Currently, the leadership team that includes John Stradwick who has taught in UK, New Zealand and Asia and has just returned after co-leading a K-12 International School in Delhi, India, are busy building relationships with schools in the area. “We visit neighbouring schools, discuss curriculums, learning decisions and critique each other as we get the final nuts and bolts of our curriculum together. “We’ve had Washington DC-based Susan Patrick, CEO of International Association for K-12 online learning and chatted about development of education policy and learning pathways,” she says. The progressive junior college promises to make the transition for students from Ormiston Primary School to Ormiston Senior College a very easy one.

t times we may be dissatisfied with the service received from health providers. When there are areas of concern, however, it’s important to lodge a complaint. Making a complaint is an important way of improving the quality of services provided, and to receive an acknowledgement, explanation and an apology. Most providers find it useful to be aware of complaints as it is helpful to know about client concerns. Then they can take steps to
resolve, and maybe change, the way their services have been provided that will be a benefit for all clients. At times, though, the response to a serious complaint may be unsatisfactory and therefore, as a further step, help of a health and disability advocate could be sought. This service is free and covered by the same legislation applying to the Health and Disability Commissioner. Advocacy has proven to be an effective way of resolving complaints and usually dealt with more quickly than other options. Even so, if at the end of these

here is an air of festivity at the community Iftaar as 150 women in hijabs pray together after which they break their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Amongst the women at the event hosted by Auckland revert sisters on the weekend, (Kiwis and Maori who have converted to Islam) is vivacious 38-year old Zimbabwean, Amanda Davids. The Pakuranga resident, a revert Muslim since 2007 (a revert is a person who has converted to the Islamic faith), says that it was the look on a friend’s face whilst praying that had her yearn for that kind of peace. “Being the sort of person who clubbed till sunrise, wore skimpy clothes and had hair that was really out there, I was a completely different person,” says the lady covered from head-to-toe. “I was in search of something. From being a devout Anglican Christian who attended Bible classes to being a Born Again, a Pentecost which includes speaking in tongues and converting to Islam, it’s been quite a journey,” she says as women in the room break their fast with a nutritious date, that gives them a shot of energy. The aroma of flavoured rice with chicken and other delica-
cies fills the hall at the Zayed College for Girls in Mangere where the women’s-only event is organised by Ormiston residents Lina Toi, Farina Khan and Tasneem Mohammed. Sharing the story of her journey to Islam, Amanda says it was whilst teaching English at a college on Queen Street that she couldn’t resist asking a Muslim student how to tie a headscarf. “I asked her if I looked like a Muslim after I wore it and she said you are wearing a skirt and a sleeveless blouse. You may have to cover your legs and hands too,” she smiles. Later, the student slipped her a small copy of the Koran saying that her mum taught the Koran study class at Zayed College. “I attended it and later converted to Islam,” she says. A Kiwi revert, Deborah Taka, who is programme assistant with sKids Childcare says that it was her husband Hemi Taka who first converted to Islam. “From alcohol, drugs and clubbing to Islam, I first thought it was one of those phases he is going through,” she says. The mother of five admits to happily eating whilst her husband fasted. “When I realised he is so much better than he used to be, one day I read the Koran that he had left behind on the table. I started weeping and
made a decision to convert to Islam. Now I get to meet all these gorgeous Maori and Kiwi revert sisters,” she says. Noeleen Van de Lisdonk, CEO Fatimah Foundation that empowers Muslim women in Auckland, says that Ramadan is a spiritual time for the families and the community to pray together. “There is so much of unity and connection. With the revert sisters new to being Muslims, the objective is invite a wider community to join us for dinner,” she explains. Ramadan is a month for self restraint, piety and charity, says Golflands resident Munira Khanum, a financial advisor by profession. Children’s librarian at Pakuranga Library, Zayna Hussein believes that fasting is an equaliser with the poor. “We get a sense of how it feels to be hungry. “Also with shorter days, just 11 and half hours from dawn to sunset in New Zealand it is not that hard,” she smiles. “I know I can never diet otherwise but Ramadan is a good time to cleanse the system.” Ms Mohammed says that Eid will be celebrated on July 6 or 7 depending on sighting of a new moon. “Eid is celebrated with large congregational prayers at different Masjids and parks, followed by feasting, visiting family and friends.”

Transition to the new PBE standards A
new multi-standards financial reporting framework has been introduced in New Zealand by the External Reporting Board (XRB). This has resulted in separate suites of accounting standards for the following three sectors: ■ for-profit ■ public sector public benefit entities (PBEs), and ■ private not-for-profit PBEs (eg, registered charities). The framework changes mean that from 1 July 2014, Public Sector PBEs report against a new suite of PBE standards. The new suite of PBE standards is made up of mainly International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSASs), modified where appropriate for the New Zealand context. The suite also includes five NZ IFRSs and four domestic standards (FRSs). You can read more about the development of this suite of standards in the Overview of the Public Sector Accounting Standards. On transition the new suite of PBE standards was found to be highly converged with the previous IFRSs as applied by PBEs. Note 33 in the Financial Statements of Government for the year ended 30 June 2015 outlines the impact of adoption of NZ PBE Standards. For further information on the new framework see Account-
Resources to assist with the transition
ing Standards for Public Sector PBEs on the XRB website.
The Treasury has many resources that may assist with transition programmes. Treasury will continue to provide information about changes to PBE standards and for-profit standards after the transition to the new PBE standards. Visit http://www.treasury.govt.nz/ publications/guidance/reporting/ipsas
Transition for PBE Entities
As the Government reporting entity is designated as a PBE, the consolidated Financial Statements of the Government (FSG) will need to be prepared using the new PBE standards from the financial year 2014/15. This means that information reported to the Treasury must be based on the new standards. On transition we identified very few significant differences. In future years, Treasury will monitor changes to the PBE suite of accounting standards and provide advice via Treasury Circulars and our Guidance for Public Benefit Entities web page.
Transition for For-Profit Entities The following entities are designated as for-profit entities for financial reporting purposes: ■ State-owned enterprises (unless designated as a public benefit entity) ■ Mixed ownership model companies (Schedule 5 companies) ■ Air New Zealand Limited ■ New Zealand Superannuation Fund ■ Television New Zealand Limited ■ New Zealand Lotteries Commission, and
Guidance on Recognising Liabilities and Expenses ADJUSTMENTS: A number of entities are designated as for-profit entities for financial reporting purposes including Television New Zealand. Photo mapio.net
■ any Crown entities designated as for-profit. Under the new reporting framework, those entities in the Government reporting group designated as for-profit entities will continue to prepare their individual financial statements under NZ IFRS. However, the CFISnet schedules they submit for group reporting purposes, must be based on Crown accounting policies and PBE standards. As a result, where these two suites of standards differ, forprofits may need to make adjustments to their CFISnet schedules to ensure they are consistent with Crown accounting policies and PBE standards.
Companies Trusts Property and other investments
Treasury has now completed a project to transition the FSG to the new framework. This project had four phases. The first three phases focused on recognition and measurement, and the fourphase focused mainly on disclosure impacts for the first interim and first annual financial statements for the year ended June 30 2015.

The document Guidance on Recognising Liabilities and Expenses was prepared to provide a “first point of call” when making accounting judgements over when to recognise a provision for a liability of uncertain amount or timing for financial reporting purposes, particularly when that is for an obligation which is not “exchanged”. Those persons updating accounting policies or preparing financial statements under the new PBE standards may find this a helpful reference for clarifying some of the questions that arise when considering liabilities. However, this document does not directly cover the recognition of liabilities arising from conditions attached to revenue from a non-exchange transaction. Courtesy: www.treasury.govt.nz

Feedback I’ll never use the train again On Monday I thought I would go into the CBD on Mr Brown’s trains as we are all being encouraged to use public transport. I arrived at Panmure Station at 7.20am to find the sealed car park next to the station full, but saw a sign with AMETI and Auckland Transport symbols on in a gravelled area where cars had already parked in aisles like a car park. Silly, silly me. When I returned at 11.30am I was well and truly jammed in. Two cars had parked on the ends of the aisle. Cars were parked in the centre of the aisle. One car had even just turned in the entrance and parked. One car parked partially across the entrance. In fact, most cars were well and truly jammed in. I rang the phone number on the sign for AT and spent 15 minutes on the phone to be told a parking warden would come and ticket them with no mention of having them moved. Twenty minutes later I rang back to see when the warden would come. I was told there was no record of my first call. Same procedure again, three more calls and 1½ hours later found out that the land is council-owned but not designated a car park so they have no authority (why wasn’t I told this at the first call).

By this time I had missed an appointment I had waited three months to get, and could not go to work that afternoon as I could not get my car out. I had to leave my car there and returned at 6pm. Many cars were still struggling to get out; only by now it was dark with no lights in either car park. Through the ignorance of others I lost a day’s pay, couldn’t attend an appointment I will be charged for, and will have to wait another three months to get another and I had two taxi fares. Council need to get things sorted so people will use transport and drivers need to have a bit more respect for other people. Parking can be hard to find but please think of others. A friend of mine has had this happen in the other car park and couldn’t get their car out to pick up a sick child from school and had to use a taxi. I will not use the train again. It ended up very expensive owing to the arrogance of other drivers and a confusing car park sign left by council. At least at Half Moon Bay there is some parking on the streets. Take warning. This could happen to you if you do the right thing and use the train. Never again. I have photos of the cars blocking people in. I went back to look yesterday and the same cars were there. Shanley, Pakuranga
On the road to nowhere
With the average speed of Auckland motorists travelling around Auckland around 31km/h and getting lower by the day, the copious slow down signs found around Auckland’s streets might soon become, apart from being superfluous, a bit of a sick joke. I would suggest that they might serve Aucklanders better if several of them were installed in a circle around Auckland’s immigration department offices. Gary Hollis, Mellons Bay
Thank you young men
I have a nice story to tell from the Queen’s Birthday holidays. I was walking my daughter’s Jack Russell dog down Edgewater Drive. Two young men stopped and asked was I walking home as there was a pit bull walking up on his own. They didn’t want my small dog to be hurt. I thanked them and turned and walked home very fast. It was a lovely thing that they did. Jewel Mildon, Pakuranga

hen couples venture into a jeweller to discuss their wedding rings, prospective grooms can occasionally be somewhat unenthusiastic. They sit with arms crossed, nodding agreement with whatever their partner suggests, just wanting the whole experience to be over.
This is just the start of the journey and Chris Schweder is all about the journey. Bit by bit, Chris determines the personality of a Schweder client, learns what matters to them and what they like. Do they work with their hands? Do they prefer white gold to yellow, or maybe titanium? What goes with their skin tone? What size works best on their hand? Soon the guys are leaning forward and engaged in the process. A wedding ring is a lasting sign of commitment, a public declaration of love for another. By the time the bands are created, both sides of the couple are emotionally invested in what is the most important item of jewellery either will own. Jonathan Warner was completely involved in the design of his wedding ring. “I went to Schweder – Bespoke Jewellery at Village Jeweller for the
design of my fiancée’s engagement ring and we already had a good relationship with Chris. “We had a few ideas of our own – my fiancée’s wedding band was designed to match her engagement ring – while I had a few options I liked. Chris suggested curving the inside band, to give the ring more contact with the finger, preventing it from slipping and sliding around. He curved the edges of the band, which makes easing it on and off more comfortable, as there are no hard edges. “The end result looked great, but was also comfortable and practical.” Chris’ bespoke jewellery design business, Schweder, is based at Village Jeweller in Howick and he can take his craft anywhere. AB selectors need to gamble T
he All Blacks selectors must gamble if they are to find their best centre combination to help them retain their world No 1 spot ahead of the challenge posed by a rejuvenated England under inspirational coach Eddie Jones. While two wins against Wales is not to be scoffed at, the fact remains that the huge holes left by the international retirement of Richie McCaw, Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith are going to be extremely difficult to fill. Having served a long apprenticeship under McCaw, No 7 Sam Cane is getting his chance against Wales and is seen as a future All Blacks captain when Kieran Read eventually retires. There is a lot to like about Cane’s level-headedness and honest endeavour, but he’s not made the impact against Wales that dynamic substitute Ardie Savea has. Easily the All Blacks’ fastest forward, Savea has the same kind of dazzling speed that has made Michael Hooper such a try scoring threat for Australia. With the exception of inspirational skipper Kieran Read, Dane Coles, Brodie Retallick and Charlie Faumuina, New Zealand’s hard working pack is not renowned for its ball carrying thrust. Thus Savea’s promotion to a starting berth could be vital against stronger opponents. Not that the Welsh have been sluggards. Far from it with backs George North, Liam Williams and Jonathan Davies having regularly exposed deficiencies in the All Blacks defence. Equally disturbing has been the lack of composure on attack where New Zealand’s midfield has lacked cohesion and wings Waisake Naholo and Julian Savea have mixed brilliance with brittleness. So bad was Savea against North in the first test that he was dropped for the second although he’s too good a player to be side-lined for long. While it was nice to see Israel Dagg celebrate his international comeback with a good try and Ben Smith once more
demonstrate his class on the wing, Smith remains our best fullback and should start there against the top teams. As with Smith, versatility is also a blessed gift bestowed on Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie, with Barrett starring in the second test by setting up Smith for a cracking try and scoring another himself after replacing injured firstfive Aaron Cruden. We know he’s also a very good fullback. But such is his speed and skill set he’s probably capable of making a good fist of every position from firstfive to fullback. But for concussion, Charlie Ngatai would probably have been the starting second-five against Wales. And Sonny Bill Williams will be welcomed back to the fold after the Rio Olympics sevens are completed.
Agnew’s Angle
Barrett could also do the job. If, however, the selectors were prepared to gamble, he might best be suited to advance his international career as a Bruce Robertson-type centre. Put him outside Ngatai or ball distributing genius SBW and he will score a lot more tries, as well as setting them up for his classy wings. With Ryan Crotty, Malakai Fekitoa and Seta Tamanivalu having produced mixed midfield form to date, Barrett could be the answer to the riddle. With a little bit of luck, instead of being a super sub, as a starting centre, he could become a superstar. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

New attraction at fun park Rainbow’s End has announced another new attraction to be opened by the end of the year. The announcement was made at an event attended by Prime Minister John Key in his capacity as Minister of Tourism. To be named “AA Driver’s Town”, the new attraction will enable children aged 5-13 years to experience driving a miniature Suzuki Swift around a colourful, tiny town featuring traffic lights, two-way roads, roundabouts, parking spaces, car wash, petrol station and other landmarks. Rainbow’s End CEO Chris Deere said having recently added new attractions targeted at younger and older age groups, the company wanted to create something new for kids aged 5-13 as part of its ongoing programme of revitalisation and growth. “Our visitation levels have increased 62 per cent over the past five years as a result of our ongoing investment
in improving the overall experience for visitors of all ages. We expect the addition of” AA Drivers Town” to contribute to further growth in visitor numbers,” said Mr Deere. Dougal Swift, general manager AA Membership & Brand said AA hopes the new attraction will encourage positive attitudes to driving. “We are really excited to work with Rainbow’s End to launch AA Driver’s Town later this year, which moves beyond entertainment into educational play in a fun and engaging way,” said Mr Swift. “It provides a great opportunity for kids to learn basic road rules, patience and healthy attitudes to driving safely,” said Mr Swift. Rainbow’s End was recently awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence (April 2016), and late last year received the 2015 IAAPA Top Family Entertainment Centre of the World Award for Kidz Kingdom.

selection of work by international and nationally significant artists will be featured at Te Tuhi’s Winter Exhibition. Titled The Non-Living Agent, the exhibition opened early this month and is curated by Andrew Kennedy. It runs in association with the Auckland Festival of Photography. The artists explore the effects images have on the body, a sense of belonging and relationships to others. The exhibition includes a range of approaches from a drawing project that members of the public can participate in, to alluring sculptural and video works that tap into historical trauma and current realities. Featured artworks range from the New Zealand debut of James Richards’ 2014 Turner Prize nominated work Rosebud to Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc’s An Italian Film (Africa Addio) which concentrates on the decolonisation of African states. Other art works include New Zealander Dorota Broda’s Cathedral, an interactive drawing project that will evolve over the duration of the exhibition. of Barracuda restaurant, Lubna and Raad Bayos who run one of the most popular restaurants in the suburb love being an integral part of the most special day of a couple’s life after they’ve said their vows. The celebration often begins at Barracuda restaurant with breathtaking views of the Eastern Beach—a perfect setting for a wedding party with a fluid indoor-outdoor flow. There have been plenty of Kiwi weddings at the restaurant that can accommodate up to 100 people. The restaurant with a waterfront address at 32, The Esplanade caters to everything from fine dining to casual and more affordable cuisine While Lubna is currently busy helping plan a wedding theme for a for an English couple that recently moved to Auckland, she equally enjoys organising 21st and 50th birthday parties, as well as anniversaries, corporate functions, first communions and henna parties. Providing personalised service for special occasions and events is what she enjoys most, especially when it comes to making it a classy affair with white table cloth and dressing up the tables
with style. Her passion for making it `an occasion to remember’ shows, as one 21st birthday bash always leads to another big bash. “Usually 21st parties are stand-up parties where we serve canapés and there is a dancing floor with a DJ and an open bar. They are quite popular. It’s quite reasonable as it starts from $20 for four to five canapés,” she says. Mid-winter Christmas parties hosted by different community groups such as Probus Clubs are also quite popular. A special mid winter menu costs just $25.90 for a three course meal.
There is nothing like feasting on Barracuda’s classic winter warmers signature dishes like the famous seafood chowder and lamb shanks. Enjoy the warm, hearty meals to your heart’s content in the cosy atmosphere of the Barracuda on the Eastern Beach. Diners also have an option of opting for a two-course meal at $19.90 or just a main for only $12.90 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Breakfast starts from $8 with eggs on toast, which has a lot of people starting their day basking in the warmth of the sun, sipping on to their
morning cuppa as they soak in picturesque beach views. Happy hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4-6pm has locals streaming in for a tipple. Having been in the area since 2002 while both Lubna and Raad know most of the regulars in the area, they would like invite the new settlers to have a catch up with their friends at the Barracuda, even if it is over coffee/tea and cakes! Winter is a great time for interior painting
ADVERTORIAL CP0707A
While summers are all about entertaining, travel and having guests over, winter is a good time to take on an interior remodelling project. Painting the interior of the home during the winter can be a fantastic way to begin a revitalize and transform your living room, kitchen, bath and bedrooms say the experts from Mustills Painting Services. Greg and Debbie Mustill employ an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “In today’s working family scenario it so easy to let maintenance slide,” says Greg. “Unfortunately, when paintwork deteriorates it can downgrade the value of a home, and if you’re thinking of selling it’s a turn-off to buyers. “Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until suddenly one is confronted by a big and costly bill to put things right.” Greg says that they tackle every job, no matter how big or small. “We do it with the same thorough professionalism, starting with proper surface preparation and undercoating then carrying through to the final top-

A fastidious tradesman, Greg is proud of his team’s reputation for working efficiently and leaving everything clean and tidy at the end of the day. “Whether we are painting a ceiling, refreshing interior rooms or tackling a full exterior repaint, we take pride in our workmanship.” For quality paintwork, without any hassles, call Greg or Debbie at: Mustills Painting Services Ltd, Ph: 536-4356. Importantly, we don’t keep our customers waiting.” As an added bonus for customers, Mustills has a great all-year round special and is offering FREE pre-paint washing with all exterior repaints (conditions apply). “In fact, now’s a good time to plan ahead and take advantage of this special,” says Greg. And, as always before painting, Greg consults thoroughly with clients as to colour, the type of paint most suited to the job and the number of coats required. “We use all major paint brands, such as Wattyl, Dulux and Resene, and work with oil and water-based paints. We also advise on the correct sheen to use as this can make a big difference in

ous examples of properties transacting within short timeframes by property speculators. “Vacant sections within new developments are extremely popular, with the on-selling of vacant sites which have been purchased off plans providing strong capital gains.” Jonno Ingerson, head of research for CoreLogic NZ says there are two main reasons for the Auckland market dipping and then recovering. One is the rules and regulations that came in late last year aimed at slowing Auckland’s rapid rise in value. These included the capital gains tax on properties re-sold within two years by investors combined with tougher lending conditions for investors, plus the requirement of foreign buyers to have a local bank account and tax number. “The second is definitely related, and that is the temporary disappearance from the market of Chinese buyers,” he says. “This disappearance can be linked to the foreign buyer rules, but also to the Chinese stock market slump in August and the subsequent restriction of money flows out of China. “Local Chinese could no longer access funds from China so had to sit it out for a while.” It appears that both of these brakes on the market have been released, he says.

ith New Zealand’s national median price reaching a new record high, the Eastern Beaches dwelling median price for May continues to climb. After passing the $1 million mark in April, the latest Eastern Beaches median price is 28 per cent up at $1.1million compared with the same time last year, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. The national price hit $506,000 in May. REINZ spokesperson Bryan Thomson say as 2016 progresses, regional markets, such as Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Central Otago Lakes, Northland and Hawke’s Bay, are strengthening in price and sales volume, while the large main centres of Auckland and Canterbury are taking a back seat. “The growth in activity across the regions is now exceeding the influence of the Auckland market on national statistics,” he says. “This is shown in the fact that Auckland’s median price is rising slower than the national median price, and Auckland’s share of sales over the past two years has fallen from 40 per cent to 34 per cent. “That said, we continue to see strong demand across the Auckland region. The listing situation remains very tight and vendor expectations con-
tinue to be optimistic” Mr Thomson says. “The supply/demand equation remains well in play for buyers and sellers in the region. “Of some concern is the dwindling level of properties available for sale and, with winter now upon us, the number of properties coming to market is also going through an expected seasonal decline.” Auckland residential property prices have lost their upward momentum, says Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson. “The average price in May compared with that for the previous three months is up only 2.4 per cent and the yearon-year increase for May was only up 6.4 per cent. “This is well down on the 12 per cent increase we saw in the 2015 calendar year.” However QV New Zealand national spokesperson, Andrea Rush says values in the Auckland market are now 74.9 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007, 49.1 per cent up when adjusted for inflation. “Home values across Auckland have begun accelerating again. Agents are reporting a shortage of listings, with wellpresented, good quality stock moving increasingly quickly,” she says. “In some cases offers are made and accepted without the property reaching the wider market. “We are also seeing numer-

Quality play time with your children IN THIS day and age, technology has taken over our lives. We see so many busy parents rushing around with their children, pushing strollers while diligently tapping away on their phone. We need to take a step back and ensure that when we do spend time with our children, it is quality time, so put down the phone and get out and play. Butterfly Creek is one place in Auckland that is all about play and spending time with your children. With 14 years in business now, Butterfly Creek exists purely to make sure children and their families have fun. It is a true sanctuary where children can be children and the only technology you will see is the click of an iPhone as parents capture those amazing moments. See a gorgeous butterfly land on your child’s head or you can dare to touch an actual dinosaur in Dinosaur Kingdom, the largest and only animated moving dinosaurs in New Zealand. “Having fun and natural play is at the heart of Butterfly Creek and we see children as the heart

saltwater crocodiles, a tropical butterfly house with over 700 butterflies, tropical aquarium, monkeys, birds, a playground, cafĂŠ and train and more. “Every couple of years we look to improve our facilities and in
2014 we added the Dinosaur Kingdom which has been a huge hit with children and their families, he says. Families can simply come for the day and wander around or they can book a birthday party in one of three fun birthday rooms that make the children’s day an extra special one. “There is nothing else similar in New Zealand to what we provide. We are part Zoo and part Attraction Park — it is a great day out where the only focus is having fun, says John. Butterfly Creek has also become a favourite for school trips, with over 20,000 school kids visiting every year. Children can learn all about the lifecycle of butterflies or the evolution of dinosaurs or get to know more about mini beasts like wetas and spiders like the Tarantula. So whether you’re a large family with children or part of a school trip there is something for everyone. Butterfly Creek, 10 Tom Pearce Dr, Auckland Airport. PERSONAL PRAYER TO THE VIRGIN MARY
(Never known to fail)
O most beautiful flower of Mt Carmel, fruit of the vine, splendorous of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in this my necessity. O star of the sea, help me and show me herein, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me here you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. This prayer must be said for 3 days and the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thanks for prayers answered.

Brown makes NZ squad By NICK KRAUSE
C
onnor Brown was 12 when he and a few mates jumped onto racing bikes at school. Three years later, he made the New Zealand U17 development squad and headed off to Australia to race. Now 17, the St Kentigern College schoolboy has been named in the New Zealand squad to compete at the Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Switzerland in July. Brown has been selected with four other boys from New Zealand for the junior worlds. And tomorrow he’s on a flight to Melbourne as part of the squad’s build-up. The Year 13 student is the current U19 Oceania 300m champ. He’s also a top scholar, having achieved academic honours at St Kents. Brown, who has represented New Zealand as a cyclist on both the road and the track, is also a member of the highly successful New Zealand-based cycling team Skoda Racing. While he’s keen on both
disciplines, it’s clear where his heart and success lies. “Track cycling is my passion,” he told the Times. The record speaks for itself. He competed in the 2016 Oceania Track Cycling Champs and won two gold medals, first winning the 3000m individual pursuit and second with his NZ teammates beating Australia in the 4000m team pursuit. In the Auckland Track Champs earlier this year Brown, from Whitford, broke the long-standing individual pursuit record to take gold in addition to a gold in the points. At the National Champs, his medal haul included two bronze medals and one silver in the individual events and he was instrumental in leading the Auckland team to gold in the 4000m team pursuit. The teen has no time to rest. He returns from Australia next Sunday and heads straight to the world-class Avantidrome in Cambridge for more training with the New Zealand squad.
CONNOR BROWN Photo supplied
As to the future, he has natural aspirations to make it to the top of his sport. “I’m kind of just focussing on 2020 and the Tokyo
Olympics,” says Brown. “It’s a long way off but I think if I keep progressing like I am at the moment, it will be a possibility.” And there’s no reason he can’t make it given his incredible development through the age groups. Brown continues to take podium spots at national and regional level. He doesn’t hesitate when asked who his cycling hero is. “(Sir) Bradley Wiggins is a big inspiration,” says Brown. Sir Bradley is a British professional road and track racing cyclist and that country’s first Tour de France winner. The similarities are fascinating too. Sir Bradley started racing at the age of 12 too and began his career predominantly on the track, and announced his talents with a win in individual pursuit at the 1998 Junior Track World Championships. Says Brown: “He’s (Sir Bradley) got an amazing riding style. He just looks so fluid on the bike.”
