inston Peters gave an impassioned speech at the Grey Power Annual General Meeting held at Pakuranga Bowling Club on Friday morning. A large crowd gathered to hear the NZ First leader speak on issues such as housing, water ownership, climate change, immigration and the overall state of politics in New Zealand. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Winston Peters speech without a few sly digs slipped in throughout, and of that there was plenty. From calling the present parliamentary group “a bunch of morons”, to a dig at Maggie Barry and David Seymour and more. “I have never seen politics in a state as bad as it is today,’ he said. That’s a bold statement from someone who’s spent 42 years in the business. “I have never seen such lowering standards of deceit and organised spin passing for substance and policy as I’ve seen today.” He began with the current topic dominating New Zealand politics – the Todd Barclay tapes scandal.
The Clutha-Southland MP said he would stand down at the general election after allegations surfaced of him having illegally recorded a conversation of one of his staffers criticising him. As we all learnt from the Bradley Ambrose and John Banks Teapot Tapes saga of 2011, recording a conversation you are not a party to is a crime – although apparently more of a crime then than the National Party would say it is six years later when the shoe is on the other foot. Mr Peters said the latest scandal was “at best naive; at worst, plain illegal” and made even worse by lies told by Mr Barclay, Prime Minister Bill English and others in the National Party. He said there used to be a certain standard of behaviour required by people in positions of authority – and those standards weren’t always being met anymore. “Say what you like about [Sir Robert] Muldoon, [Sir Keith] Holyoake and the rest but they were nothing compared to how politicians are today” he said. As he moved onto senior’s issues, Mr Peters
solid fan base: Winston Peters had a captive audience. Photo Kelly Teed
told of how behind closed doors, “you will never hear National defend [NZ] Super,” and accused both National and Labour of flipflopping on the issue. “Only [NZ First] has stood firmly behind NZ Super and has been unbending in its stand.” He drew applause from the crowd on the topic of the SuperGold Card and how “we could be doing so much better if [National] got behind the card.” Mr Peters accused Minister for Seniors, Maggie Barry of “pretending to be
a friend” to the seniors and said she “expounded the virtues of the SuperGold Card which her own party has tried to undermine from the day it was first proposed”. These claims were “blatantly false” and another “great example of arrogance,” he said. Not one to shy away from the hard issues, Mr Peters drew yet more loud applause as he made his case against immigration and raised the concern of substandard construction and political oversight of low quality materials being used. The floor was opened up for a question and answer session – and it was quickly off to a rusty start. “Do you have someone to groom as successor to the ACT Party?” someone asked as confused looks were exchanged around the room. The NZ First leader didn’t miss a beat. “If I did, it would be a rabbit,” he said. As the microphone was passed around all corners of the room, Mr Peters easily fielded questions on climate change, homelessness and foreign inves-
tors before being riled by someone asking if he would consider abolishing Maori electorates. “Who did you vote for?” the politician demanded. “Well last time I voted for the Conservatives but this time I was going to vote for you.” “You didn’t even give me your vote and you want me to do things for you? You voted for some lunatic [Colin] Craig?” said the feisty politician, choosing to ignore the last part of the sentence. Luckily, it did pick up from there. There was laughter and lots of approving nods and quiet words of agreement and a whole lot of passion being flung around the room as the Grey Power community got to raise the issues that matter most to them. And then suddenly time was up. Mr Peters was ushered out of the room to one final round of applause and even a partial standing ovation by some of the captive audience. And by looking at the ear-to-ear grin on the wily politician’s face, you get the feeling the affection was mutual.

Characters from the literary world came to life at St Mark’s Catholic School’s Book Fair Parade on Wednesday morning. Superheroes, fairies and wizards came out to play, alongside aliens and witches, but by far the biggest favourite of the morning was Clifford the big red dog. Creativity and team spirit were at the forefront of the morning with staff and students “dressed to spell”.

We work on a very tight budget.” They welcomed the local board’s proposal. An independent person would be able to stand back and take a fresh look at the organisation to determine where improvements and/or savings could be made. “They will determine whether our programmes are meeting the expectations of the community and the extent to which we are fulfilling our contract with council,” Ms Bowers says. “Certainly, knowing that the utility costs are covered for this first year gives everyone a bit of breathing space.” Auckland Council arts and culture manager Richard McWha says council will also look to address some of Uxbridge’s other concerns around heating, air conditioning and acoustics in the For New Patients, if you bring in this advert before July 31, 2017 recently refurbished building.

munity Projects Incorporated to cover its utility costs for the 2017/2018 financial year. “Uxbridge has done a fantastic job fostering arts and culture in Howick for more than 30 years and we want to see them to continue to succeed,” said Howick Local Board member and its arts, culture and community portfolio lead, Katrina Bungard via a media release. “The strategic review, which will include engagement with the community and the Howick Local Board, will be done by an independent person and take a look at the whole operation from what programmes are on offer, what’s working well and opportunities for development.” The review will then provide Uxbridge with some recommendations so it can meet the expectations of the community, and its contract with Auckland Council, in delivering a range of arts and cultural opportunities. Under Auckland Council’s new community leasing policy the organisation is responsible for maintenance and utility costs, such as water and power. In the past, these were paid by council. “That policy change was unex-
A woman who fleeced her elderly war veteran father of his life savings has escaped a jail sentence. Carolyn Diane Alleyne, 65, was sentenced to 10 months electronicallymonitored home detention at the Manukau District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to five representative charges of theft by a person in a special relationship. She admitted to stealing $150,000 from her father, Ron Greenhalgh, who was a World War II veteran. Mr Greenhalgh was living in a retirement home after being diagnosed with dementia when Alleyne began using her power of attorney to access his bank accounts. When the funds eventually ran out and Mr Greenhalgh’s payments to cover his retirement home began to fail, Alleyne moved her father out of the retirement home into her Pakuranga abode. When Ron Greenhalgh died on Father’s Day 2016, his son described him as essentially “a homeless
man”, living in donated clothes and with no money. In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mike Greenhalgh described his sister’s offending as cold, callous and cruel – words Judge Mina Wharepouri echoed when handing down Alleyne’s sentence. At an earlier sentencing indication, Judge Wharepouri had suggested a starting point of 3.5 years imprisonment but this was further reduced due to a guilty plea, previous good character and the payment of reparation to her brother. Outside court, Mike Greenhalgh said he was relieved the ordeal was over but would have liked the sentence to be harsher. “I just look at the sentence and wonder how much that would deter someone else from doing the same thing. “At the end of the day, Dad’s gone, he was the victim in all of this and nothing will change that.” ■■ Read more on times. co.nz.

hree months after the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre made a desperate plea for help to stay afloat, the Howick Local Board has agreed to a one-off $35,000 funding grant. It also agreed to an operational review costing $30,000. The Times reported on March 30 that the newly-renovated Uxbridge centre faced the prospect of closing for good if it didn’t receive additional funding from the Local Board. In a March 20 presentation to the board, Uxbridge director Vickie Bowers and chairman of the Uxbridge Community Projects Incorporated board Cliff Halsey outlined the necessity of an extra $100,000 per year in funding to continue operations. They also requested an extra $35,000 if Uxbridge is required to pay water and electricity charges – a cost the centre was not responsible for prior to the $6.5 million renovations of the facility in 2016, mostly funded by Auckland Council. Ms Bowers estimated that without extra funding, Uxbridge would only be able to operate for another year before it would be forced to close the doors. Uxbridge has been an entertainment hub for the Howick Village for 35 years. The Howick Local Board on Monday agreed to a proposal to fund a strategic review (to the tune of $30,000 taken from various budgets) of Uxbridge Arts and Culture to assist with forward planning and to “ensure its ongoing success in delivering council’s arts and culture programmes in the Howick area”. It also agreed to make a one-off $35,000 grant to Uxbridge Com-

Our special people series continues with an interview with the lovely Enid, who was sceptical until she came for a visit. It’s been quite a year...
“I said to my son, let’s go and have a look
- we loved it...”
How did you first find out about the quality of Ryman? A friend of mine came here, I came to visit and was impressed by the place and told my son. He was worried but I insisted I wanted to be somewhere I can meet people my own age.
What options were you looking at? I didn’t really know I had options. My three children had all asked me to move in with them. How could I choose? I love them all the same. My grand-daughter had worked in some not-so-nice places and had told me “I don’t want to see you in a smelly old home!” In the end, a visit helped me to see all the options Ryman can offer, I’d highly recommend coming for a look - it’s like a palace!
How has the first year been? I love it. I don’t have to cook, I can make breakfast if I want and in the evening I can choose to make something for myself or join my friends in the dining room.
Beautiful apartment available now! Enjoy living in this spacious, one bedroom serviced apartment with everything you need to enjoy your retirement.

Plan for Howick’s future approved P
reserving the character that is Howick Village’s point of difference and improving links to local attractions are among key actions outlined in the new Howick Village Centre Plan. Adopted by Howick Local Board last week, the plan establishes a 30 year vision for the area to be “an attractive, lively and walkable village that celebrates its history and provides a strong sense of identity and community”. The final plan has been informed by several months of engagement and consultation with the local community, attracting more than 180 pieces of feedback on the draft plan. “We’ve been at schools, the local market, local events and what is obvious is people are very passionate about what they love about Howick and the village, what they want
it to look like in the future and what they don’t want to change,” says Howick Local Board’s planning, regulatory and heritage portfolio lead Adele White. “Probably the strongest sentiment was to ensure that the character, the village feel of the area not be lost.” Among the other ideas put forward through the consultation phase was a desire for a playground in Crawford Reserve, interpretative signs showcasing the heritage and stories of the area, making the area easier to get around, how to make the best use of the village square, developing a community garden and more green spaces. The plan incorporates the following themes: ■■ A character village ■■ A community village ■■ An accessible village ■■ A green village.
As well as setting out a vision for the village for the future – the plan highlights a series of actions and projects that could be implemented over the next decade either by the local board, other parts of council, the community or community organisations. Howick Local Board sponsored the plan’s development and chair David Collings says it provides a great foundation to help realise a vision for the village and surrounding area. “It capitalises on the rich history, character and cultural values highly valued by the community and we are looking forward to working with the council and community to implement the plan.” Among some of the first projects to be looked at will be interpretative signage – something already under way as part of implementation of the Howick Heritage Plan.

Swim school success A year ago, Daniel Fulton bought a rundown swim school in Burswood, with little idea of how much the renovation would cost, and whether it would pay off. Today, although he still cringes when he thinks of how much he spent, the success of his business is something spectacular. In May, Fulton swim school won the New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Association Swim School of the year award at the 2017 conference in Christchurch. “We were up against really tough competition I believe... to win it was incredible,” said Fulton. They were judged on their health and safety procedures, coaching and the services they provide. Fulton currently has about 300 students, and believes the small class sizes of four students are what helped him achieve the award. And their highly skilled coaches.

Charity Community Fruit Harvesting is struggling to gain traction in the Howick and Pakuranga area, despite its popularity in other regions across Auckland, and New Zealand. The charity, which was started on the North Shore in 2011 by Di Celliers, helps pick and distribute unwanted fruit to food banks, charities, and schools. Pre-loved boutique celebrates second birthday It seems like only yesterday the “coolest little charity shop” opened its doors in Rices Mall, so it’s hard to believe the Cancer Society Pre-loved Boutique is now celebrating its second birthday. Since opening its doors in July 2015, the boutique has served thousands of customers with the help of dozens of volunteers from the local area, and has become an integral and much-loved part of the Howick community. In just two years, the store has sold 16,000 items, 3106 women’s tops, 800 pairs of shoes and 3600 pieces of homeware. Thanks to the hard work and generosity of the people of Howick, Cancer Society has been able to provide support for thousands of people with cancer, including home visits by Cancer Society nurses, psychology services, meals, accommodation and transport to treatment. College leads in game development A
group of enthusiastic Pakuranga College students recently had the opportunity to take their game development and shine it in the spotlight at an Auckland University of Technology event. Yuewei Zhang, Luke Denvir, Daniel Deng and Matthew Creahan are members of the school’s Software and Game Development Club. On June 7, they visited the university along with six other Pakuranga College students to attend the Auckland Game Developers Meetup – also attended by industry experts and game development professionals. Pakuranga College teacher Tyne Crow, who helps to run the game and software development club, has personally been attending the game developers meetups for years and said many who attended were very impressed with the quality of work produced by the students. The students demonstrated three different games created in Unity 3D – one of the world’s leading game development kits – including a virtual reality sledding game the group has been developing. Year 11 student Luke, who is one of the creators of the VR Sledding game, said the meetup was “extremely valuable”, offering the group an opportunity to share their work with experts and receive feedback

from those who understand what makes a game successful. Since year 9, the students have worked together, learning 3D modelling software skills, wrapping their heads around game development kits and figuring out how to streamline the process of batching all created content into one project. Connecting with the community at the Meetup was part of the wider process the students have been undertaking, by engaging with online game development communities like Discord and Twitter to seek feedback on their games. AUT lecturer, Meetup organiser and board member of the New Zealand Game Developers Association, Ben Kenobi, said building connections is one of the main outcomes from the Meetup.
“It is really great to build connections between high schools and the NZGDA. The AKLgamedev Meetup conelbatius t’nsi egami fi rotceV elbissoP nects students to local developers and educators to open career pathways, not just in game development, but also in the many related areas in which the transferable skills they develop can be used.” Mr Crow said the process of developing the games has allowed the students to develop a wide range of skills required to author digital content, but also facilitated the development of broader skills like collaboration and communication through the process of team work and regular peer reviewing. The group plans to polish the game into a final product that can be sold later on.

On behalf of U3A Ormiston, I thank both, the Times newspaper and Bruce Waller, Highland Park Centre’s manager for “Gold Card Tuesday”. Thank you Times for introducing us to Bruce. And thank you Bruce for your encouragement and support. U3A Ormiston had a display on two of the “Gold Card Tuesdays” at Highland Park and were well-satisfied with the result. We met and talked to a lot of people, and distributed well over 100 flyers - so Gold Card Tuesday certainly helped us to get the word out there. We had our monthly U3A meeting today, and had several visitors. Five of them were people we met and talked to at Gold Card Tuesday - so it definitely paid off for us.
We also enjoyed meeting Simeon Brown. He is likely to be MP for Pakuranga for 40 years or so! Above is a photo of our stand with four of our members. Mike Groves, President U3A Ormiston
Is everything coming to a head? Things are seriously ‘hotting up’, you will have noticed. All over the world. Not just the weather, but extremes of behaviour in nature and human behaviour; in every walk of life. Things are occurring with greater intensity and consequences. Things never heard of before. I liken our present predicament to a garden in which anything and everything has been sewn, without care or real understanding. ➤➤Turn to page 12

Is everything coming to a head? ➤➤From page 11
Everything is coming to a head at once. The garden is overgrown and weeds choke anything of worth. If I were the gardener, I would harvest what I could, spray weed killer on the rest, and start again, or not. A similar thing occurred much earlier in earth’s history, when eight people and a boatload of animals were saved while the rest of the living were drowned in a world-wide flood. While this happening is still being argued over today, we are reaching such a point again . Now. The ‘signs’ are God’s mercy warnings. He does not want anyone to suffer or die , but rather that they would turn to Him and avoid the consequences of their ignorance. It is a matter of individual choice whether you accept this warning. It is written “When calamity befalls a city will not the Lord have done it?”. Please think carefully on this. If you fail to consider a stop sign, consequences follow. You do not get to debate the outcome. Harvey Rosieur Howick

Ferry zone still needs work The new Half Moon Bay terminal has been open for a few months now, but after the grand opening of the wharf terminal it seems to be far from finished. exit in a significant stream on the well-patronised sailings (e.g. the 5.15pm from Auckland). The flow of cars picking up passengers, cars exiting the car park and pedestrians is decidedly unsafe. At the least, more pedestrian crossings and improved lighting need urgent installation. I would be interested to hear what the council’s programme is for the development of the final safe environment here. While the architects talked about protection for passengers from the south westerly weather, the northerly rain seems to drive in unchecked. Russell Herbert Bucklands Beach
Look at the evidence
Some updating of statistics is important in the context of this letter in the issue of June 22. There is no doubt that ice age cycles have recurred over the millenia. There can now be no doubt that this cycle has been accelerated by the actions of people, especially since the beginning of the industrial age. The evidence? Your letter stated there was no noticeable rise in sea levels in the past 50 years. In fact the cumulative sea level rise between 1910 and 1960 was 3 inches (approx 7.5cm), while between 1960 and 2010 it was 4.5 inches (approx 10.5cm) (US Environmental Agency). Small increases, but more than a little significant to the scientific community. These figures are repeated in data from many sources, including that by Church & White in Open Mind. The fact that the tidal marker measurements are duplicated by satellite recordingS adds credibility to the evidence.

It’s difficult to fathom why the Howick Local Board would want to consider the possibility of providing “free” entry, by way of a targeted rate, into the area’s only public swimming pool at Lloyd Elsmore Park. A targeted rate will force those who never use the pool to bear the cost of those do. It is unclear what the rationale for this is. There has been no decrease in the number of people using the pool. In fact, patronage from 2015 to 2016 increased by almost 13 per cent to over 620,000 visits and a recent survey by Auckland Council staff concluded that one barrier to pool visits was overcrowding. Providing “free” entry will only exacerbate that and result in higher operating costs. Council staff also identified that there has been a drop in Chinese pool visits and suggested that this could be fixed by providing “free” entry to Chinese people. Sadly, picking out different ethnic groups for special treatment is all too prevalent on the Auckland Council. There has been no attempt made to determine why there has been a drop in Chinese visitations. Every day we make decisions about what we are prepared to pay for and how much we are prepared to pay. Could it possibly be that some people have decided that they would prefer to spend money on other recreational activities? Cr Dick Quax Howick Ward

Similarly, the comment that Franz Josef Glacier has been advancing since 1982. That was correct, except that since 2008 it has receded by 800 metres (FranzJosefGuides) - an experience mirrored by other South Island glaciers and the most rapid decline in length since record-keeping began. Mysterious SUV worth a look-over By Alistair Davidson
‘M
U’ in MU-X is short for ‘Mysterious Utility’, one of those odd old-school Japanese model names that lose something in the translation. The real mystery is why Isuzu MU-X hasn’t achieved greater market penetration. In the three years this large SUV has been available in New Zealand, it has made up just 10 per cent of Isuzu’s total volume. It’s not the flashest looking SUV around, and neither is it the cheapest in its class, but like a good front-row forward, MU-X is a reliable workhorse with a big heart that gets the job done. Like most SUVs, this Isuzu is perfectly happy doing the school run (it’s a true seven-seater). But hitch a big boat on its towbar or venture off-road and it shines. Isuzu builds trucks. Lots of trucks. It’s also the biggest diesel engine manufacturer in the world. That’s why this tough SUV has dual-range four-wheel drive, a full ladder chassis, and a torquey 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine under its bonnet. At the launch of the 2017 MU-X that has just had a ‘big running change’ (which is more than a minor facelift, less than a new model, according to Isuzu), Isuzu Utes New Zealand general manager Murray Greenhalgh explained that this SUV attracts three types of buyers. “There are existing Isuzu owners who have done maybe 300,000 to 400,000 kilometres

in their Bighorn or MU for example, and want another Isuzu. “Then there are the serious four-wheel-drivers who want a vehicle that can handle rough conditions. Thirdly, there’s the towing crowd. MU-X is a big, heavy vehicle that will tow 3000kg, day in and day out, and enjoy the process.” MU-X’s ‘big running change’ consists of new colours; a new grille, headlights and bumper that flow into a revised bonnet line; and a new rear bumper and spoiler. Daytime running lights are now standard, as are projector beam headlamps with autolevelling. “Isuzu Engines gave the 3.0 diesel a tickleup,” says Greenhalgh. “It’s the same kilowatts, (130), while torque has gone from 380Nm to 430Nm.” Greenhalgh also announced that emission levels have been reduced. A six-speed auto is standard. Specification remains high. “There is only one model,” explained Greenhalgh, “and it’s New Zealand build code, not (a vehicle) built for other markets.” There’s independent rear air conditioning, rear DVD player with a drop-down screen, GPS, reversing camera, full leather upholstery and power front seats. Despite the extensive upgrades, MU-X carries over the previous version’s $65,990 price tag.

t was packed to the rafters and smelled so, so good. Howick College’s vibrant International Food Festival hosted on June 9 by the school’s Ingham House raised more than $2300 for the Blind Foundation NZ – a very successful outcome for a student-run event. It’s hosted annually as a part of Culture Week, organised by the Culture Club and led by year 13 student Jac-Wye Chan. The week is filled with exciting events ranging from competitions, library displays, workshops, a cultural parade, cultural performances and culminates with the International Food Festival – an event teachers say they look forward to every year. Exotic food stalls from around the world showcased the best of international cuisine, as hundreds MULTICULTURAL: Left to right: Anna Kim, Harsimran Hundal, Jasleen Kaur, Sukhleen Kaur, Bhavneet of students rushed to taste test Kaur, Japnam Siddhu and Isha Singh. A fine taste of things to come Meeting Charlotte Layec, the new French chef at Basalt, the cornerstone of good food in Howick— stirs up a sense of anticipation. More so since the skilled and highly professional French chef is working hard to give the locals a fine taste of things to come. Having studied at Ferrandi, Paris, the French School of Culinary Arts, rated as one of the best French cooking schools, the young chef is busy working out a fresh twist to the menu, without completely changing it. The 25-year-old chef comes with the experience of having worked in a great culinary city like Paris, apart from having worked in restaurants in France and England under top chefs. She moved to Howick after her parents made New Zealand their new home two years ago. It wasn’t long before that she was appointed as head chef at Basalt, the restaurant known for good food, great atmosphere and live music on Fridays. Charlotte brings with her a repertoire of gastronomic food as well as service, catering, pastry and restaurant management. The restaurant which is welcoming space for all ages with stunning sea views, has newly introduced a new mix of different cuisines. Using fresh seasonal products, Charlotte says the classic food has a bit of a twist. “It may come as a surprise to some people.”
A sneak peak at the menu reveals Squid Ink Risotto with fresh cockles, sautéed leaks and parmesan. Creamy and full of rich flavour,

the classic Italian dish is nourishing and makes for perfect winter food on a cold evening. Another favourite with the chef is Market Fish served with cumin carrot puree, kalamota olives, roast baby carrots and blood orange emulsion. Charlotte says she enjoys it since “you never what the market fish of the day it is going to be. There is an element of surprise.” Smoked Tofu with bacon infused broth, Israeli couscous, radish red onion, button mushrooms and fried kale is another option that that Charlotte recommends. It’s delicious in its simplicity. “However the biggest change is in the desserts,” and this time she is not telling. Charlotte would like those with a sweet tooth to try the range on offer and give the verdict. Basalt’s new menu is available now. he latest QVcostbuilder data shows the average cost of building a new home in New Zealand’s four largest cities has risen on average by 3.5 per cent in the year to May 2017 and a total of 25.5 per cent since the previous peak of 2007. QVcostbuilder is an arm of state-owned enterprise, Quotable Value (QV) and provides the latest construction cost data to the property and construction industries through an online subscription web platform tool, which can be accessed on any device. Subscribers can access a comprehensive range of building costs associated with the construction of various buildings, including residential and commercial properties. It also shows the average cost of building a standard 140m², 3 bedroom, one bathroom home rose by the most in the Wellington in the year to May, up 2.43 per cent to an average cost of $258,000. This compares to Auckland where costs rose 2.32 per cent to $272,000; Dunedin, where costs rose 2.12 per cent to $254,000; and Christchurch where they rose by the least over the past year, by 1.92 per cent to $277,375. what’s the cost?: QVcostbuilder provides the latest construction cost data to the property and construction industries.
Andrea Rush said Auckland and Christchurch still remain the most expensive places to build a home out of the four cities measured by QVcostbuilder. “However, building costs rose by the most in Wellington over the past year as the housing market in the capital jumped more than 20.0 per cent. While in Christchurch building costs rose by the least as the residential rebuild nears completion and demand is meeting supply for homes in the city,” she said. “Meanwhile, Statistics NZ building consent data shows a continuing flattening or downward trend in building consents across the country since numbers peaked at a 12-year high in mid-2016. “This is in part due to stricter lending criteria from
banks making it much harder for developers to gain finance for building projects.” It also reflects the trend being seen in the housing market with the latest QV House Price index figures showing nationwide quarterly value growth has plateaued,” said Rush. “Meanwhile, Statistics NZ data shows the country’s population has grown by 97,000 over the past year: with 44,000 people moving to Auckland; 4100 moving to Wellington; 7100 moving to Christchurch and 1200 moving to Dunedin. “The downward trend in building consents and construction activity is concerning as it comes just at a time when more housing supply is urgently needed, particularly in Auckland.”

Bold black adds a wow factor to the kitchen Creating a predominantly black kitchen was a brave move that proved highly successful for Craig Cooper.
of what I wanted. I worked with Megan and she was able to enhance my original concept. The lighting that we added gives it a real wow factor as well.”
Jag Kitchens transformed a worn out, old mint-green coloured kitchen into a sleek and modern space using lots of bold, glossy black.
Craig says he enjoyed the process of planning and having the new kitchen installed.
“The old kitchen had a green formica benchtop, the cupboard doors weren’t working properly and it did not reflect the rest of the very well-presented St Johns home,” explains Jag Kitchens designer, Megan Dyer.
“They run a very good operation at Jag Kitchens. There were always other associates willing to help if my consultant was not available. They are all competent, friendly, willing to help and wanted us to have a great kitchen.”
She found working with client, Craig Cooper, a straightforward process. Both designer and client are thrilled with the stunningly sylish result.
Jag Kitchens specialise in custom-designed kitchens and has its own manufacturing plant. The staff also use a stateof-the-art 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.
“My client came in with a very clear idea of what he wanted. He had good ideas which made my job easier. Once we had all the elements in place, the key was to make sure that everything was lined up symmetrically.

visually appealing. About 90 per cent of all the new kitchens we’d looked at had been white, but we had seen a few black kitchens in the months before we started our project and thought they looked very sharp,” Craig explains. “That was the way we wanted to go.”
U-shaped kitchen in his house had been built in 1995 and was “almost out of date before it was installed.”
Jag Kitchens have an excellent reputation for designing and building for all budgets. Their advice and design service is FREE OF CHARGE.
“The result was a very modern vibe — a nice, streamlined and contemporary kitchen,” says Megan.
The splashback is in glass and the bench in a durable engineered stone. Both of these in stark white provide sharp contrast to the cabinetry, bringing light into the space.
In keeping in with the ‘black theme,’ Craig chose a Samsung fridge with a black fascia and a black rangehood.
The flooring in laminated wood in a dark brown hue, adds warmth to the kitchen and provides yet another contrast.
Whether you are thinking of a major renovation or simply planning to replace an existing kitchen do contact Jag Kitchens. All designers have years of experience and are happy to discuss your kitchen project free of cost and obligation.
The cabinetry completed the black look — Jag’s acrylic gloss in “Carbon” was used. This is

Borrowers starting to get creative “First home buyers are pitching in together with their parents and or siblings to buy a house together – this is possibly influenced by Auckland’s growing diversity – but even then it’s tough to get finance because the banks look for the weakest link. “Where in the past they might have looked at the big picture, in terms of combined income, they’re now asking ‘what if?’ questions and in a way shying away from issues that may never arise. They want to know if each individual party in the deal can support the mortgage on their own

if they had to, which can be impossible,” Ms Lockie said. Increasingly first home buyers are relying heavily on support from parents and family, including equity in parents’ property, parents’ guarantees or gifts of funds and, where they are eligible, for KiwiSaver benefits, they are accessing those funds. “But it requires at least two incomes to get anywhere in the Auckland market. Many parents are finding that upkeep of their properties, in terms of maintenance, insurance and rates, is getting tougher, so mum and dad are moving in with the children.

skilled panel of architectural practitioners and experts has revealed small homes are the standout entries as the 2017 ADNZ - Resene Architectural Design Awards season begins. Judge Michael Davis who is director of Architecture Programmes at the University of Auckland says while the overall number of entries this year is fewer than last year’s, the quality is higher. He says the small homes (up to 150sqm) category is particularly rich, in terms of quality of design. “The quality of work is exceptional’, says Michael. ‘And I think this is because a smaller home demands a lot of designer-led intention. When you are working with a smaller site and a smaller budget, the same number of ideas are packed within these constraints so you end up with a real density of quality design inside smaller homes.” New judge Melanda Slemint agrees saying innovative design produces quality. “Buildings affect people, and good ones may be loved because they have some sort of meaning, for example a connection to place or memory, an appropriateness through scale, materiality and language, and therefore substance, that tran-

New Zealand’s changing social dynamic is reflected in the co-operative approach many families and first home buyers are taking when applying for mortgage finance, but the banks – caught between a rock and a hard place by many factors outside their control – are shifting the goal posts. Director at Auckland mortgage brokers LoanPlan, Christine Lockie, says banks have tightened lending policies beyond anything she has seen in the last ten years, and most of it is driven by the Responsible Lending Code implemented by Government in 2015.

Four benefits of learning a new language If learning a new language has been sitting on your to-do list for ages, there’s no better time than now to think of finally crossing it off. Here are four substantial benefits of language learning that will convince you to take the leap! 1. Easier travels The fabled language barrier is real— as soon as you travel outside tourist areas, understanding others and making yourself understood can be quite the challenge. To make sure you get to experience all the riches a foreign
3. Improved brain function Deciding to tackle Spanish or Korean can boost your cognitive abilities and help your mind react faster and more efficiently to stimuli. Studies have even shown that language learning reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and helps maintain an overall healthy brain later in life.
country has to offer—and to avoid awkward situations—you should be familiar with the language spoken at your destination. 2. Better work relations Being able to speak to your clients in their preferred language can be a huge boon for your business relationships. It will improve not only your professional image but also your chances of scoring a raise. Indeed, speaking an extra language could boost your salary up to 20 per cent (depending on your job title).
4. Increased focus Language learning shapes your brain into a well-oiled multi-tasking machine. As you build a new mental lexicon, you’ll notice an improvement

in your ability to do several things at once and to quickly switch between tasks. Your overall focus will be sharper and your attention span, longer. Tips to reach your goal Start by determining your incentive—taking a trip, moving to another country or looking for a better job, for instance. Then, find someone to share your adventure with, and immerse yourself in the language. Be openminded, listen to others and most of all, practice, practice, and practice some more!

TESTIMONIALS:
An update on Jaimee: “She got Level 2 Math Endorsed with Merit, which she wouldn’t have achieved without the work you did with her. She is maintaining Merit for her topic tests and internals so far this year. She feels it is because you gave her a solid foundation last year which has taken her well into this year” “Thank you so much for your wonderful and helpful teaching” - Debra “I just recently got offered a place in Auckland University for all my selected courses. I could not have done it without you” - Miraj “I am sincerely grateful for all the help you have provided me whilst teaching me Mathematics. In such a short span of time I feel so much more confident” - Aakriti “I think he has got a lot out of the sessions with you, it makes a huge difference getting help from someone who actually knows how to teach” - Cody’s Mother
We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

Macleans’ top guns By Bridget Kelly A group of Macleans College students have beaten more than 300 teams, largely made up of university students, to win the highly contested Social Entrepreneurship award at the Velocity Innovation Challenge. Their 1000 word e-commerce business plan to support ethical and local small businesses caught the eye of the judges at the University of Auckland.
This is the first time this competition has been won by Macleans College students. Many of the competing students were undergraduate and postgraduates in research roles. “We are one of the only high school teams to have ever won this competition,” said member Jonathan Shaw. “We were only able to join because two of our members are part of the University’s Young Scholars programme.” The Macleans college stu-
dents were Jonathan Shaw, 17, Helen Wu, 18, Vincent Wang, 17, and Wayne Zhou, 16. Their business, Mosaic, is an e-commerce business dedicated to supporting small ethical businesses and promoting ethical business practice. “The underpinning mission of our company is to promote and develop corporate social responsibility and ethical business practices by supporting the growth and success of local, ethical small companies,” says Shaw.
HOWICK PRIMARY SCHOOL Inspiring confident life long learners Encouraging positive behaviour for learning Howick Primary School has embarked on a fantastic and well established programme called Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L). This is a school-wide programme to support school communities - leaders, teachers, students and whanau to work towards a vision of having students who are confident, connected and actively involved and will go on to be lifelong learners.
Situated amongst the beautiful scenery of Clifton Road between Whitford and Beachlands, Pikopiko Learning is the ideal Early Childhood Centre for those wanting a well-rounded early education for their children.
Each child who gets a gold token is also in a draw for a Junior or Senior prize from the ‘goodie box of treasures’. Mrs Hurley says, “We are very excited at the potential for this programme to enable children to make great choices for behaviour, earning the respect of their peers, teachers and their family and helping make the citizens of the future capable and confident life-long learners.
Teachers plan lessons to illustrate how the values are demonstrated in playground behaviour, the way the uniform is worn, interactions between students, and of student to teacher, with the expectation of affirming appropriate and positive behaviours.
Montessori at Howick Primary is also thriving with numbers growing steadily year on year.
Two of our students, Bo Mitchell and Sofia Currie are about to put their gold token--received when
There are plenty of special opportunities on offer with an artist giving weekly lessons. Children also get to learn French from a native speaker and connect with the soil through gardening - all while following an authentic Montessori philosophy for learning. Our Montessori unit is fully integrated into the Howick Primary School programme with many of the students in choirs, sports teams and other activities throughout the school. JE0877A

The slip of paper shows why they have been given the gold token. At each assembly, the gold tokens are added up to show the winning Whanau.
Associate principal Leanne Hurley and junior team leader Kristen Oliphant have spearheaded the development of this programme across the whole school beginning with the establishment of Howick Primary Values of Respect - for self, for others and for the environment.
“This is a departure from the days that focused on negative behaviours and ‘naming and shaming’ bad behaviour; instead this promotes students to aspire for better outcomes and provides guidance for appropriate strategies,” said Mrs Hurley.
Offering a curriculum inspired by Reggio Emilia, Pikopiko Learning provides an amazing experience for your child.

Proud students praise Education their school community School’s sacred journey ADVERTORIAL JE0872A

“S
tarting high school is super scary,” Year 13 Howick College student Raynor Perreau told an audience of prospective students and their parents. She then assured them the school has systems in place to make that transition easier. Year 9 student Hannah Milo agrees, recalling being walked to class by senior students in her first week, “the teachers were so understanding, and the seniors were just as approachable,” she says, adding that with the support in place for Year 9s she quickly felt right at home. Speaking at the school’s recent open evening, school leader Raynor and fellow leader Amol Kumar offered stories about their time at Howick College. Amol is proud of the strong student focus of the school, with student leaders and staff working together to create a positive school community. “For example we made videos of students who show our school 3C values (Courtesy, Commitment and Citizenship), and how these values have helped them become successful.” He cited student led initiatives such as The Big Stand and Student Council as mak-

All three agree the school curriculum offers many options to students to consider for their future. Amol says, “I would never have found my passion for engineering if I didn’t get an opportunity to try it in Electronics class first.” As part of the new Innovation Stream curriculum, Hannah is excited about the projects she has experienced so far. “The goal of the Innovation Stream is to develop the leaders of tomorrow, by getting us to be hands on with cool projects,” she explains. Committed and passionate teachers are acknowledged by the students as a big part of success, Raynor says
teachers genuinely have student interests at heart. “The support and feedback they give pushes us to improve. They care about us and want us to do well.” Nearing the end of high school, Amol and Raynor are grateful for all the learning they have experienced at Howick College, inside and outside the classroom, and feel well prepared for the real world. Their advice? Take every opportunity offered while at school; advice Hannah is keen to take. “Imagine what I can do in the next five years!” she grins. Edgewater College has started a Pasifika-based youth mentoring programme, in the hopes of connecting their students with indigenous knowledge, belief and values. The programme is called O le Malaga Paia; The sacred journey, which is inspired by Mana Moana, a post doctorial research project conducted by acclaimed poet, Dr Karlo Mila. The programme is designed to allow life-lessons from “the sea, the land, and the heavens” to inspire and
guide new generations living in contemporary Auckland. One initiative from this project includes the students having breakfast together in the mornings, which Whanau liaison William Pua hopes will bring Edgewater College closer together. “My desire is that people will come, be fed, be inspired and inspire,” said Mr Pua. The sacred journey breakfast cafe is open to students and staff, and project coordinator Catherine Croot
says that the cafe continues to grow in popularity, with accolades from the school community. The project will be seen in English drama and photography classes in collaboration with Sarah Jansen. O le Malaga Paia aims to encourage students to pursue knowledge of their culture, identity, values and beliefs. Mr Pua believes it will provide academic and cultural support, and will enhance communication between the school and families.

Students bring business to life By Bridget Kelly Two Ormiston Senior College students believe their new palette art business is some cutting edge stuff. Harjot Singh Sodhi 18, and Ethan Thompson, 17, created the business for the Young Enterprises Scheme which is part of their business class. “It’s a chance to have a business before you even leave school, so we were quite excited about that,” said Sodhi. The palette art business, called Cutting Edge Enterprise, prides itself only being completely custom-
izable and sustainable. The duo use up-cycled timber and damaged cans of spray paint to create their works of art, which sell for $15-$30. “We here at Cutting Edge truly believe that we have a solution to New Zealand’s rapidly increasing timber waste,” said Sodhi. Their customisations include logos, symbols and texts. You can choose to have a spray painted stencil, or an LED lit piece. Their biggest competition is a group of Pakuranga students, who they heard were making palette

furniture, and Industrial Design NZ who sell palette art, but at a higher price. Their end goal is to make around $1000 before tax, and Sodhi believes that they will make that before September. Sodhi and Thompson have made enough already to buy themselves a table saw, which will cut the production time down to an hour. They are also looking at hiring more students to help them keep up with future demand, and allow them to stay on top of their school work. “We started off selling to just stu-

They have sold seven in the two weeks they’ve been operating, despite Thompson battling tonsillitis. You can view and request palette art on their Instagram cutting.edgeent or their Facebook page Cutting Edge enterprise. Both boys want to continue their business once they finish school at the end of the year, and are looking into careers in finance, investment and real estate.

the right notes By Bridget Kelly A group of former Pakuranga high school students Note2A+ business is gaining traction in Auckland, and they have their sights set on going international. They’ve made $10,000 since they launched in September this year, selling university class notes online. Kobe Huang, 19, thought up the idea, which was brought to life with help from Emily Chen,19, Edson Han, 19, Yifei Liu, 20, Kevin Hu, 19, Tony An, 19, and Honghao Wu, 19. The self-described ‘A Team’ are all commerce students at the University of Auckland, except for Yifei who studies engineering. They competed in the Velocity 100 challenge last year and made the finals. “We actually didn’t go in with the intention of winning or anything like that, basically Velocity provides a good support network for entrepreneurs who want to start up their business,” said Tony An. “A lot of the teams that went through Velocity were just ideas, we were sort of the only team making real sales and I think that’s what a real business is, it’s going out there and actually doing it.” They did a test run of their business, and found that it gained traction quickly, and they were making money. “We never expected it to take off; it sort of took off on its own.” They got KAMI onboard who invested time and support, and Bruce Waller, the property manager of Highland shopping centre who provided essential insights for the group. “If it wasn’t for the Young Enterprise Scheme and Highland Park Shopping Centre, we would definitely not exist at all,” said An. They are an online retailer for study notes.
We LOVE what we do!

Students with A grades can submit their class notes and then Note2A+ will cross check the notes, and distribute them. The commerce notes for a semester, for example, are $15. Students who send through their notes make 40 per cent profit. “Once they finish a paper, all these study resources that they’ve made throughout the course they just throw away, that’s just value going down the drain. That’s where we come in; we’re retaining that value for the next set of students,” said An. Their end goal vision is to replace text books. They are working on expanding to other universities in New Zealand. “If you think of it as a pool we’re fishing from, the more we enlarge it, the more potential we have,” said An. Their biggest hurdle is university opposition. In the year it’s been running they’ve faced backlash from top students who feel that sharing notes is on par with cheating, and they feel some lecturers are hesitant about the idea. “Commercialising of study notes is a really new idea, so it does have some warming up to do,” said An.

“There are so many reasons to learn French,â€? said Alliance Française director JosĂŠ Marie Cortès at the end of his speech earlier this year, as he welcomed people to the Alliance Française French Film Festival— just one of the many French events in the Alliance Française cultural calendar. “It’s always fascinating to see the range of people who come to our classes,â€? “Tyndale Park Christian School also wants neighbours to know that we love being part of this neighbourhood and that we want to do our part to ensure Flat Bush is a great place to live,” said Blom. This is not the last time they will be doing a cleanup either; Blom is already planning what to do next. “An interesting next step will be to do some research on why trash is ending up on our sidewalks and gutters to help council come up with a solution that will enable us have a cleaner neighbourhood.”

Fifty students took to Flat Bush last Friday, in an effort to clean up the area. The students from Tyndale Park Christian School and Hamilton Christian School were surprised at the amount of rubbish they collected. In the 40 minutes they were out, they filled an estimated 30 white shopping bags with rubbish. Principal of Tyndale Park Christian School Barend Blom wanted to use this as an opportunity to teach the values of service and to give back to the community.

Burling conquers Everest I
t was in 1953 when mountaineer Edmund Hillary became the first human to conquer Everest that I, as a boy, first began to feel the immense pride at belonging to a little nation that could beat the world if it set its mind to it. I was too young to realise then that Kiwi-born Lord Rutherford was the first man to split the atom. But since, like so many of my countrymen, I have taken huge pride in the achievement of our sportsmen. After Sir Ed’s feat there was a 1956 home rugby test series win against the Danie Cravencoached supermen Springboks, clinched by Peter Jones’ Eden Park try, and his immortal “I’m absolutely buggered” after match comment. Then there was that golden hour at the 1960 Rome Olympics when Arthur Lydiard coached athletes Peter Snell and Murray Halberg to win gold in the 800m and 5000m respectively. Since then there have been many more such moments to fuel New Zealanders with pride. Right up there amongst the best of them is Emirate Team New Zealand’s magnificent Bermuda triumph in beating Oracle to lift sailing’s Holy Grail, the America’s Cup. Having come back from the pitch-pole capsize against Ben Ainslie and continuing to sail on damaged daggerboards, it has been an amazing success story for Kiwi innovativeness, design and sailing excellence.
America’s Cup heading back to New Zealand By KELLY TEED
PROUD: Team NZ helmsman Peter Burling (back of shot) weaving his magic with his crewmates in Bermuda.
With Russell Coutts and Peter Blake having won it in San Francisco in 1995 before losing it to Alinghi in 2003 when Coutts switched his allegiance, the Auld Mug has been dear to Kiwi hearts which were broken in San Fran four years ago when Jimmy ‘Pitbull’ Spithill’s Oracle crew snatched it from the jaws of defeat against Dean Barker. This time with 26-year-old Peter Burling at the helm and Glenn Ashby as skipper, Team New Zealand stormed home to an emphatic 7-1 victory, not only for the sailors and designers (who introduced the cycling concept), but for a shore crew that achieved wonders in keeping the boat afloat.
While Burling and good mate Blair Tuke are Olympic and world champions in fleet racing, they are relative novices in match racing. Yet the remarkable Burling proved a quick learner, especially in mastering the starts. Congratulations to Aussie battler Spithill, whom Coutts once described as reminding him so much of himself. A fierce competitor who uses his mouth the same way Muhammad Ali did to gain a psychological advantage, he proved gracious in defeat. Now it remains for the All Blacks to clinch a series win against the British and Irish Lions in Wellington on Saturday night following their 30-15 Eden Park triumph.
Following a six year break from competition, Stephen Barker finished last weekend’s Rally of the Far North in third overall. With new navigator Flat Bush’s Kieran Anstis and a borrowed Mitsubishi Evo 9 for the event, the only expectation was to complete every stage, rather than focus on chasing a result. “This is the first time Kieran and I had teamed up for an event and I expected we would be off the pace in the first stage while we gelled, but I was surprised to see we weren’t too far off the pace during the morning’s opening stage,” said Barker. Stage two saw the pair take their first stage win on gravel and move up to third overall. The pair completed a very high
speed stage 4 in fifth place, only dropping 3 seconds from the leader and remained in third position overall at the lunch time service break in the Kaitaia township. A lack of seat time and confidence from Barker to commit to many fast corners and blind crests throughout the afternoon’s stages saw the pairing complete the remaining three stages respectably but would ultimately cost the team second place. “The car is under-powered in the faster stages and I really needed to commit 100 per cent to the pace notes Kieran was calling to me to stay at the pace of some of the other competitors. In a borrowed car we decided to limit the risk and consolidate a fantastic third position.”
But Lee Robson would take top honours followed by Campbell. “It seems my speed is still there which is reassuring!” Last week, Anstis was selected to attend the Rally New Zealand Co-Drivers Academy. The academy was set up to help guide upcoming Kiwi talent to becoming professional co-drivers. The academy will go over all aspects of the sport from understanding regulations, pace note writing, health and fitness and self-marketing. “My goal is to ultimately be competing internationally as a professional co-driver,” said Anstis. “To be selected for the Rally New Zealand Co Drivers Academy is going to help me get closer to that goal.

Having squared their games against the Super Rugby teams with wins against the Crusaders and Chiefs, losses to the Blues and Highlanders and a draw against the Hurricanes, the Lions are hungry for success. But with Ngani Laumape and Jordie Barrett in such brilliant form for the Hurricanes after failing to make the All Blacks’ first test team, the Lions can only marvel at the depth of talent they have had to face. Yet as Sean O’Brien’s first test try showed in capitalising on the brilliance of Liam Williams and Jonathan Davies, they are better than their critics claim. But, we hope, still not good enough to topple the men in black.

Prems determined to stay positive Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s premiers have a tough road ahead following another loss at the weekend. The prems put up a spirited fight though against a determined University, going down 31-12. Prems coach Pita Alatini said his squad showed up and ready to play. “The University boys were up for it too. It was a great contest and came down to capitalising on opportunities,” he said. “ They converted and we didn’t. Now it becomes a harder road for us but it’s not impossible!. “We must take the positives from this game and get up for this weekend against Grammar Tec.” Club results

Despite the early hour of the morning, all ages turned up to see the race, with some of the younger audience members suitably dressed in pyjamas and dressing gowns. There was tension, nerves and ultimately excitement and relief as New Zealand narrowly beat USA across the final finish line to clinch the series. The 5:30am finish time wasn’t enough to deter celebrations though – free glasses of celebratory champagne were flowing as the win sunk in. Emirates Team New Zealand have already confirmed the next America’s Cup challenge will be held in New Zealand with a date and exact location yet to be confirmed.
