SURVIVOR: Guta Goldstein has told local students of the horror and miracles of her childhood.

uta Goldstein can talk about the dreaded SS soldiers; she can talk about the Jewish families spirited away – never to be seen again, the unfathomable six years she endured under the Nazi jackboot as a child, she can even talk about that hell-on-earth, Auschwitz. But she struggles, even today, to dwell too long on her beloved little sister Munia. Mrs Goldstein was born in Lodz, Poland in 1930. She had her younger sister. Her father was a textile merchant and when she was seven-years-old, her mother passed away. Her father remarried a year later. Guta had a generally happy childhood in a traditional

Jewish home. In the world outside her home, she lived in an atmosphere of discrimination against Jews and was occasionally
taunted by non-Jewish people. On September 1, 1939, Guta’s carefree childhood was ended abruptly with the outbreak of World War
II and Poland’s invasion by Germany. At the age of nine, Guta and her family, together with the entire Jewish population of Lodz, were herded into a ghetto. “Conditions inside the ghetto were abominable in every way and life was unbearable,” says Idit Forster, office manager at the Jewish Federation of New Zealand. Idit has accompanied Guta as she shares her incredible story of Holocaust Survival with hundreds of Kiwi students. Every year since 2011, the Jewish Federation of New Zealand has run the HOPE Project, bringing a Holocaust Survivor to tour NZ schools. Guta addressed students at Macleans, Pakuranga and Saint Kentigern colleges. ➤ Turn to Page 4

Do we really care about Brexit?

ust imagine what the English and Welsh rugby teams might be saying on their arrival back in the UK. They’d only been gone three weeks. And now the Brits have only gone and voted in a referendum to exit the European Union. Brexit. It’s a move which took pundits, polls, politicians, markets and probably rugby players completely by surprise. The big question here is do we really care? We should, if only for a chit-chat with someone in the lunchroom or at the water cooler or building site. Why, I hear some scream? We’re still tethered to the United Kingdom in so many ways. We export goods – and not just dairy – there. We’re part of the colony. What, you scream, has the UK has done for you? Think about young people and their OEs. And there are loads of our young people working there. What about their comedies? No-one does ‘em better. And their sublime dramas? Don’t fight me on this. And their many sports teams. What fun we have with those. The poor Welsh copped a bit of a hiding in their just-finished test series against our All Blacks. The English rugby side – hilariously led by Aussie legend Eddie Jones – trounced the Wallabies in an historic contest on Aussie soil. And to add to the Poms’ woes, the English football side has just been ejected from the European Cup. Bad habits seem to be forming here.

It’s not all bad news people. There are loads of nuggets. Somewhere. We cannot dwell on the fact the PM is going, maybe by October. So there will be a Tory leadership scrap and maybe an unelected PM will have to take over and work how to extricate the UK from the EU. It’s a clusterbomb meeting custard scenario. We mustn’t read too much into the fact the Labour opposition is also scrapping with itself. No-one wants the leader and top MPs are jumping ship because they reckon he is not The One. The quid has taken a royal pounding, the FT-SE or Footsie (like our NZX but like comparing a tomcat with a T-Rex) has plummeted. Uncertainty rules. Markets don’t like uncertainty which is why
they’ve all followed the FT-SE. The UK has yet to pull the trigger – that is, it has yet to formally notify the 28 EU members it’s bailing out. After that, the rules say the UK has a two year period of negotiations within which a basic withdrawal agreement should be made. It’s only been a few days since the referendum and many member states already have the yips. They want their old mate out, sooner rather than...you know...no hard feelings. There are depressing news reports of lies and misinformation in the Leave campaign. And stories that suggest there is no exit strategy. That the poorer towns and villages who tended to back Brexit would fall further in the mire, that the promised jobs and extra billions for the broken health system would not be coming
and that the economy would not magically transform into a golden goose and immigration – their supposed albatross – would not/could not immediately be knocked on the head. You could shake your head and walk away. Totally understandable. Or you could look for the positives, for that silver lining. Like the referendum is not binding. And more than one million people regret their vote to leave the EU, an opinion poll carried out in the wake of the Brexit decision suggests. Of the 17.4 million people who voted Leave, 1.1 million now say they wish they hadn’t. Heartwarming right. We need a kind of morning-after pill or a time machine. I leave you with a poignant quip from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in an interview with German broadcaster ARD. Juncker said he was deeply saddened by the UK’s 52 per cent-48 per cent vote. “It is not an amicable divorce, but it also wasn’t a tight love affair,” he said of the EU’s relationship with Britain.

Mum: I couldn’t bear it C
lare White, the mother of 17-year-old schoolboy Josh Martin who was killed following a collision near his school in October, was so distraught following his death she considered ending her own life. Mrs White (O’Hanlon) asked in an emotional victim impact statement on Friday in the Manukau District Court how she could ever expect to explain the extent to which the death of Josh had impacted her life. “I was struck with an intense sense of pain the day I found out Joshua had died ... that pain continues to live in me daily,” she told the court while fighting back sobs. Mrs White and a large family contingent were in court for the sentencing of local man Josef Kadlcik, 46. He was charged following the collision that killed Josh. Joshua, also known as Josh O’Hanlon, died less than 300m from the school when Kadlcik’s SUV collided with his motorbike on October 15 last year near McDonalds on Pakuranga Road at around 12.50pm. The Year 13 student was heading to KFC nearby to collect his pay cheque when the accident occurred. Kadlcik was sentenced by Judge Jane Lovell-Smith to 200 hours of community work, disqualified from driving for 15 months and ordered to make reparations of a little over $24,000.Kadlcik pleaded

guilty last month to careless driving causing death. “What an amazing young man that lost his entire life on the day of 15 October 2015,” Mrs White said in her victim impact statement on Friday. The accident where another road user thought he could pass across the road... unfortunately that impatience has brought me to the brink of suicide on more than one occasion.” Josh, she said through tears, had just achieved his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, his advanced scuba diver certificate, represented his school at the Stage Challenge as Romeo in the play Romeo and Juliet. Her son had also starred in a film in the leading male role and was recognised as best actor.

“Josh represented the school playing the tuba in the school concert band and was also awarded a certificate for his work as a peer support person and he was house leader for Kauri House and was awarded for his leadership skills,” she said. “Just before Josh died he was awarded a scholarship for Massey University but sadly Joshua will not be able to fulfil that dream. My life changed in an instant from happiness to anguish and it is going to take years to overcome that anguish and sincere pain that has engulfed my life. I have suffered multiple nights without sleep and I often wake up in the night and find myself crying.” Mrs White and husband Darren had with them in court
a framed photo of a smartlyturned out Josh in a white shirt with black tie and big smile. They also brought with them a glass orb which contained his ashes,” Mrs White told the court. “Unfortunately, Josh has had his future life stolen from him and from me and my family forever. There is no excuse for failing to give way but then there is no punishment that would do any good. Now I have seen Mr Kadlcik’s brokenness ... nothing will bring our Joshua back.” Meanwhile Kadlcik, who stood with his head bowed during the reading of the victim impact statement, looked up at Mrs White when she proffered an unscripted addendum. “I just wanted to say I forgive you...I feel your pain.” Judge Lovell-Smith accepted submissions from both the police prosecution and Kadlcik’s counsel that the defendant took responsibility for Josh’s death and was profoundly affected as a consequence of the accident. “He’s absolutely devastated that his actions resulted in the death of this young man,” his counsel said. “His remorse is extreme...words cannot express his grief.” Kadlcik, a man the judge said was of impeccable character and a devoted father and family man, had stopped at the lights and turned around in front of Josh at low speed, the court heard.

Pathway plan shelved Plans for a shared pathway along the Bucklands Beach waterfront have been shelved in favour of fixing erosion and the deteriorating sea wall. Public reaction to plans for a new and upgraded pathway from the Warren Boardwalk to Grangers Point was mixed, with many asking the Howick Local Board to address erosion issues and repair the seawall first. There was also concern about losing on-street parking on The Parade. Board chairman David Collings says the board has been advocating to Auckland Council for a regional solution and funding to address coastal erosion and will continue to push for this. Meanwhile the board has approved creating a 120-metre separated path on the road adjacent to the ageing sea wall south of Grangers Point. “This particular section is unusable for pedestrians because the sea wall is slumping, making the surface uneven so walkers have to walk out into the road and around parked cars which is dangerous,” Mr Collings says. “The board approved the need to address pedestrian safety on this part of The Parade in 2014, he says. But at that time it was decided it was a good opportunity to look at a wider vision for the area. A total of 55 submissions were received on draft plans for the pathway from the Warren Boardwalk to Grangers Point along with a petition of 215 signatures.

solemn: Macleans College students (above), like their counterparts at Pakuranga College and Saint Kentigern College, got a little emotional hearing Holocaust survivor Guta Goldstein’s story.
Times photos Wayne Martin
‘How I survived the Holocaust’ ➤➤From page 1
Her audiences, like the stories coming from their guest, were solemn. Starvation was rife and death was commonplace. Guta witnessed the premature death of her father from pneumonia caused by starvation on April 19, 1941 leaving her and her little sister orphaned. Both girls were placed in the orphanage of Marysin within the ghetto. There they contracted measles and were both admitted to the infectious diseases hospital. Guta’s dear Munia was diagnosed
with meningitis and died on May 23, 1942, aged six. Guta, amazingly, survived the Lodz Ghetto and various concentration camps, including Auschwitz. She tells the story on the infamous day when all the children of the Marysin orphanage were taken away to be killed at the extermination camp of Chelmno. Guta was miraculously rescued by her brave, courageous and heroic Aunt Golda. In August 1944, the Lodz Ghetto was liquidated and Guta, together with her aunt and cousin, were
rounded up on August 14, 1944 and deported to Auschwitz on August 17, 1944. Despite being small and undernourished, Guta inexplicably survived numerous selections and subsequent deportations. As to coping mentally, Guta said she would seize any opportunity to visualise every inch of her home, the rooms, the paintings, her family members – her happy place. “Nothing lived in Auschwitz. There were no birds in Auschwitz, no trees Auschwitz, not a blade of grass grew in this place of death,”
she told students. “This death factory was managed by Rudolf Hoess who was the Commandant of Auschwitz and by an army of his SS men and women well-trained in the task of cruelty and killing.” In September 1944 she was transferred from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen and finally to Meltheuer - a slave labour camp from which she was ultimately liberated on April 16, 1945. She was fifteen years of age. Guta attributes her own survival to a series of ‘miracles’ and good fortune. Following liberation, she
made her way to Italy where for the next four-and-a-half years she remained a displaced person. She considers herself fortunate to have been granted permission to migrate to Australia. In Melbourne, Guta met her husband, Ludwik, who was also the sole survivor of his family and together they began to rebuild their lives. They have two daughters and seven grandchildren. In 1999, Guta published her autobiography; There will be Tomorrow detailing her experiences and story of survival during the Shoah (Holocaust).
Beauty queens take titles Rural village decision appealed F A decision to refuse an application to build a rural village in Beachlands is being appealed to the Environment Court. Developers Ahuareka Trustees (Rob Bassett and Brett Russell) applied in May 2013 for a concept subdivision to establish the village on the 92.8 hectare Montgomerie Farm at Waikopua Bay. It would include 186 allotments along with ancillary services and facilities on land zoned Whitford Rural B. The property directly adjoins the Formosa Country Club and golf course, three kilometres south of Beachlands. The resource consent application was for a 160-lot village of 186 household units and apartments, a country pub with 10 guest rooms, a 300 square metre community building, two retail lots and three commercial service or office lots at 650-680 Whiteford-Maraetai Road. The existing farm house, another house and ancillary farm buildings would remain. The houses were designed with flexibility to incorporate home enterprise space, promoting work from home opportunities. A single new access road would become “shared space” roading and it would service lanes within the hamlet. Open pasture, orchards, bush areas and parks would surround the hamlet, incorporating the access road, an 80-space open car park and walking, cycle and bridle paths. The applicant said the proposed development would be self-sufficient for servicing storm water, wastewater and
potable water without the need for reticulation from external networks. The application was publicly notified in May 2014 with 46 submissions received. However the applicant sought and got direct referral to the Environment Court. As required by the Resource Management Act Auckland Council submitted a direct referral report to the Environment Court. But the applicant decided against the move and instead opted to go through the council’s hearing process. The council hearing was held in August 2015 and the decision was released last October. While in most respects the proposal would have better environmental outcomes than a complying subdivision, the hearing panel concluded that the activity was contrary to the relevant objectives and policies of the wider Whitford Rural zone regarding the overall environmental remediation and enhancement outcomes. The proposal, it said, was inconsistent with the purpose and principals of the Resource Management Act as it failed to promote the sustainable management framework required by the Whitford Rural zone. The commissioners refused the application which the applicant is now appealing. Meanwhile consent was already granted in December 2011 for a 26 lot concept subdivision at 650-680 Whitford-Maraetai Road. The consent will lapse this December 23 unless it is otherwise extended.
ormer Macleans College student Karla de Beer has been crowned Miss World New Zealand after being crowned Miss Auckland last year. Having graduated from the University of Auckland with a double major in psychology and English she is currently working as a learning and development trainer. Her chosen charity is Totara Park Riding for the Disabled. When she attended the Totara Park Pony Club and Riders Without Horses combined rally last Christmas the South African beauty said she ended up in a wheelchair for six months after a horse riding accident. “So I have an idea of what it’s like.” Meanwhile another former Macleans College student, Howick’s Tamsyn Cornwall has made into the top 20 as a finalist for Miss Universe New Zealand. Taking a ‘lawyerly’ approach to iwi ”I try to approach Treaty negotiations in a lawyerly and rational way. Sometimes people argue at a more visceral level, but when I go through the fundamental issues with folk, people say ‘fair enough’.”
– Chris Finlayson QC, Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations
By Marianne Kelly
T
alks with local iwi, business people and lawyers were on the agenda for Government Minister Chris Finlayson who was given a tour of the Howick Ward last Thursday by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. Mr Finlayson is the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Associate Minister of Maori Development, the Minister responsible for the GCSB and NZ Security Intelligence Service and the NZ AttorneyGeneral. During his visit to the Times and wearing his Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations hat he said Ngai Tai ki Tamaki Iwi was anxious to get its Treaty settlement legislation into the house. The Iwi’s deed of settlement was signed at Umupuia marae at Maraetai last November. “But they have interests in the Hauraki Collective as well and until that is ready to sign we can’t advance,” he said. “Iwi interests here overlap into Hauraki and into Auckland. Ngai Tai is a member of

Nga Mana Whenua o Tamaki Makaura - the Tamaki Collective and one of the 12 iwi of the Hauraki Collective. Their area of interest extends to Hauraki/Coromandel and the harbours and islands of the Tikapa Moana/Hauraki Gulf and Waitemata Harbour. Last July Parliament passed a law to provide Treaty of Waitangi redress for the shared interests of the 13 iwi and hapu in the Tamaki Collective covering tupuna maunga (volcanic cones), motu (islands) and certain Crown entity-owned
land within Auckland. The law recognises that the iwi and hapu have various overlapping customary interests that would not have been possible to consider separately from each other. Mr Finlayson says he’s fortunate in his job “in that you learn a lot about your country”. “The idea is to deal with legitimate claims justly and durably. Some need to be resisted.” He says once the position is described people, who may not necessarily have full appreciation of the
facts, say ‘fair enough’ when they do understand. “Increasingly,” he says, “we are becoming a multicultural society and the bicultural component is only one. “Newer New Zealanders don’t necessarily appreciate the historical significance of what the Crown and Maori are trying to do and that’s not a criticism of them. “But they have signed up to a society where the bi-cultural relationship is regarded as important. New Zealand has become a complex society.”
Rights to water Mr Finlayson is working his way with iwi through cultural and/or economic redress for fresh water. It’s been a contentious issue and in August last year the Freshwater Iwi Leaders Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Local Government New Zealand to support and encourage strong relationships and collaboration between councils and iwi. In November Finance Minister Bill English said the Government was working through what mana and kaitiakitanga meant in relation to water, but iwi were not making unreasonable demands. Maori interests, the Government and the community wanted “pretty similar things”. The big issues were nitrate pollution, the demand for water, the intensification of land use and the purity of water. “That’s not a Maori issue, that’s a general one,” he said. Mr Finlayson says from day one of the Treaty negotiations he has had to address legitimate iwi interests in water bodies. “Whenever we go onto a marae, the people always say who they are in reference to a mountain, a lake or a river. We need to address legitimate claims that come from these historical interests,” he says, pointing to some that have been never conceded and gone on for 130 years. “They have cried out for resolution and that’s what I have been doing. “In the interests of good management, we can never get a national settlement. Through the Treaty negotiations we have to try to reach something that works for everyone.” A fundamental rule, he says, is that if water interests are covered by co-governed relationships with local government, local government has to have the final decisionmaking power because it’s the local democracy representative. “Local Government is ready for this role,’ he says. “For example Environment Bay of Plenty has been dealing with 28 iwis for ages and they understand what is going on. “There are different rights and interests in water systems. But one thing this Government has never resiled from is the principle that you can have a user right over water but no-one can own it. “We are not to move away from the fundamental tenet that no-one owns water.”

Community chooses its champions A battler who has fearlessly challenged proposals that would change Howick village’s unique character has been recognised as the winner of the best citizen/ volunteer category in this year’s Howick Village Business Association (HVBA) Business and Community Awards. Gayleen Mackereth, who chairs the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association, has delivered 10 presentations to the Auckland Council Independent Hearings Panel to get Howick Village retained as a ‘special historic character’ zone in the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP). At the award presentations at Howick RSA last Tuesday Ken Scott, chairman of the HVBA, said no-one in Auckland was closer to the changes in the AUP and monitored it more carefully on behalf of the community than Mrs Mackereth. “When the original plan came out with an opportunity to put submissions in, the Howick Village Business Association was comfortable with what was proposed,” he said. “But Gayleen did put in a submission and she has since followed an arduous and changing process which was not always democratic. A huge amount of research and time has been spent to represent the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association and Howick village.”
The cake is on us
From left, Gayleen Mackereth is this year’s best Howick citizen/volunteer; best retail business, Anne Coley (left), retail manager and Steven Tong, pharmacist at Unichem Mainstreet Pharmacy; double winners, Joy Hampshire (left), retail manager and Sarah McLaren, owner-operator at Shoes on Picton. Mrs Mackereth said it had been a long and arduous process. “I can only hope that all the work has an impact,” she said. “We know we have retained single housing in Cockle Bay. We hope that we have retained the village as an important, unique place with the potential to attract tourists.” The best citizen/volunteer award was sponsored by long-standing Howick businessman, John Roy and his wife Valerie. Other sponsors were the HBVA, Times Newspapers, Chatterbox PR, the Rotary Club of Howick, and Service IQ. Winners are: ■ Best retail business: Unichem Mainstreet Pharmacy; runner-up, Shoes on Picton; highly commended, Howick Village Butcher.
■ Best professional business: Howick Mens Hairdressers; runner-up Pat Callinan Accounting; highly commended ,Velca. ■ Best hospitality business: The Good Home; runner-up, Basalt; highly commended, Muzza’s Pies. ■ Best use of technology: Velca; runner-up Howick Village Optometrists; highly commended, Spillers Hammer Hardware and Shoes on Picton; best employee, Sophie Beeson; runner-up Lee Bevan. ■ Best citizen/volunteer: Gayleen Mackereth; runner-up, Patrick Steel. ■ Supreme Award: Cachet. ■ Best employee: Donna Holdem, Darryl Walker; highly commended, Alison Bell, Sheryn Murtic.
After selling close to 10,000 items, the Cancer Society’s pre-loved boutique in Howick is having its first birthday. And to celebrate, they will be giving out presents from July 4. The folks at the store are inviting locals to come and join the fun this week, with free giveaways, great specials and the chance to win prizes. In a short space of time the team at the boutique has racked up some impressive statistics and made a great impression on the Howick community. They have served more than 5000 customers and their volunteers have given more than 3900 in-store hours. Thanks to the hard work and generosity of the people of Howick, Cancer Society has been able to provide more than 250 people with support from a Cancer Society community nurse, 750 free phone calls to the 0800 CANCER helpline, as well as 1500 meals to people too unwell to cook for themselves.
We’ve made a mistake We’ve made a mistake and we need to apologise to Elite Property Management who celebrate their 10-year anniversary on August 1 and not on June 24 as we reported in last week’s Times.

Cornish romance explored in drama By Marianne Kelly
T
erry Hooper was initially in two minds about directing Howick Little Theatre’s new production and had to think about where the plot was leading and why it was given its title, Ladies in Lavender. He thought about lavender being a sleep enhancer and realised that the two main characters, sisters Janet and Ursula Widdington, were woken from a sleepy lifestyle and, after Ursula’s tumultuous experience of unrequited love, were eventually transported back into their quiet world. “It’s a beautiful story,” Mr Hooper says. “It’s very character-based dealing with realism. And it’s about telling love stories.” The play is a drama adapted by Shaun McKenna from Charle’s Dance’s screenplay of the same name. Set in picturesque Cornwall the Widdington sisters discover on the beach below their house a young Polish violinist, Andrea Marowski, who has been swept overboard from a USA-bound ship. In the film and original short story by William J. Locke, the sisters are in their forties. But Mr Hooper says he wanted to make changes from the film – “it’s no use repeating what someone else has done. Repetition is not art, it’s photocopying.” With two HLT stalwarts, Carleena Walsh cast to play Janet, and Jo Crichton playing Ursula, it was an ideal opportunity for Mr Hooper to make a demographic change with women 10 years older than those in the film. “It’s worked a whole new dynamic into the play,” he

She comes from a musical theatre background, playing the part of Mary Magdalene in Harlequin Musical Theatre’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar earlier this year. Sarah, Mr Hooper says, has come to HLT to enhance her acting skills: “These days people in musical theatre must act well along with singing.” Completing the HLT cast is Pam Browne playing Dorcas, the sisters’ home help, and AUT lecturer Steven Arnold playing Dr Mead. The production has presented challenges to the set designers who have recreated an on-set beach, garden and Cornish cottage. A lilting classical music score has been found to run throughout the production and a quirky edge to the story comes with the regular appearance of a tradi-

tional Cornish Stargazy pie. “It’s a beautiful romantic story,” Mr Hooper says. “It’s also powerful drama and will be a story-telling evening, asking a lot of questions about what happens to people in a world of losing love.” ■■ Ladies in Lavender plays at 8pm on July 9-30, with 2pm matinees on July 10 and 17, at Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga.

Feedback Here comes the sky
What happened here? On Tuesday, June 7 a lady knocked on our door and my 14-year-old son answered. She told my son that our dog had attacked her dog and to call a vet. My son went out to our dog Mojo to find him laying on the ground and not moving. When he went to ask the lady what happened, she had disappeared. The lady had quite a big dog and our dog is a Yorkshire Terrier crossed with a Shih Tzu. We took our dog to the emergency vet where he stayed for the night and early the next morning we transferred him to the veterinary specialist clinic. He had spinal injuries that needed further investigation to see if an operation was required. We opted not to have the MRI as it was only a 50 per cent chance that he would survive the operation and no guarantee that he would be able to walk again. We still held out hope that it could be just badly bruised and decided to keep him hospitalised for a few days to see if there was any improvement. I had a meeting with local Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson some years ago. I was wanting to express my concern about the ‘social engineering’ programme which was being foisted on us under the leadership of Helen Clark at the time. Legislation which lacked public support and was, in my opinion, undemocratic, was pushed through regardless. I found I was talking to the wrong man. He said that since the passing of the Homosexual Law Reform Act (in the late ‘90s?), the ‘sky has not fallen on us!’ (I shuddered but said nothing but changed my vote next time). Hasn’t it though? The sky? Not in a literal sense but could the latest news from America be worse? Fifty people shot and as many wounded in a gay bar. The perpetrator was a ‘nutter’ certainly and Isis has claimed ‘credit’ for the horrific act, showing just how inhuman they are. America has been leading the LGBT (there are more letters some add, but that’s enough) charge, but we soon cop the flow-on with the help of their pawn, the UN, to reinforce it. We struggle to accommodate the PC changes which tell us that ‘wrong’ is now right because New Zealand is a fairly law-abiding country, albeit very apathetic. We don’t like to make a fuss, but hope things will blow away, although it is apparent that they are not going to, soon, anyway. The infiltration of schools and the teaching of wrong sexual attitudes has been tolerated so far (but I hope counter-acted by sound teaching and example in home life) but the ‘gender free’ toilets/bathrooms are an absolute joke! What has happened to common sense and the rights of the majority?

Dog amnesty deemed a success With less than a day left to run, Auckland Council’s menacing dogs amnesty is being described as “the most successful ever undertaken in Auckland”, with 676 dogs already signed up by 610 owners. Owners of unregistered dogs classified under the Dog Control Act 1996 as “menacing” qualify for
the amnesty, which offers a waiver of fines, free registration for 2016/2017, de-sexing, microchipping and a muzzle for $25. The Auckland-wide amnesty expires on June 30 and animal control officers will begin seizing unregistered menacing dogs from July 1. Auckland councillor

ore than 99,000 or 90 per cent of all Auckland dogs will be sporting shiny new blue tags over the next two months as their owners re-register them. But this year council officers will be targeting the bottom 10 per cent who “take a free ride at the expense of other dog owners”, says Auckland Council’s Bylaws and Regulatory Committee chair, Calum Penrose. Most Auckland dog owners, he says, are responsible and register their dogs during the ‘earlybird’ period that has just begun and runs until July 31. “Dog registration is a userpays service and fees cover the entire cost of keeping Aucklanders safe from dog-related nuisance and harm,” he says. “None of that comes out of rates. Every dog owner who doesn’t pay their share is leaving it to others to pay for their dogs.” Dog registration fees, he says, contribute to vital areas of animal management, including a 24-hour-a-day response to dog incidents, such as attacks
on children; beach and park patrols; animal shelters and adoptions; educating children about dog safety; reuniting lost dogs with owners; and dog safety initiatives, such as the Menacing Dogs Amnesty which has seen more than 450 menacing dogs registered for de-sexing, microchipping and muzzles. The amnesty expires on June 30 and qualifying dog owners are urged to take advantage of the offer of a year’s free registration, no fines, de-sexing, microchipping and muzzle for
$25. From July 1 animal management officers will actively search for and seize unregistered dogs that pose a risk to public safety. Dog registration fees will increase by $1 for most classes of registration, by $2 for the mid-range of fees, and by up to $3 for the highest range of services. Holders of Responsible Dog Owner licences who pay before next August 1 will receive a discount of about 55 per cent. Dog owners have until August 31 to register their dogs, after which an infringement fee of $300 applies. Fees are: Standard (if paid by August 1) $139, (if paid after August 1) $171; responsible dog owner licence holder with de-sexed dog $62 and $131; responsible dog owner licence holder with entire dog $72 and $171; desexed dog (no responsible dog owner licence held) $100 and $131; SuperGold community services combo card holder $62 and $78; special category dog, no charge; working dog $32 and $39; classified dangerous dog, 150 per cent of applicable fee.

Investing in education is the key Part of New Zealand culture is to strive to provide more opportunities for future generations. One way we can do this is to improve educational performance ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed. I’m pleased to see that last year our students achieved the best ever results in NCEA qualifications with 76.4 per cent achieving NCEA Level 2. This is a marked improvement on eight years ago. To provide students with the best possible learning environment we need to keep improving the type of environments children are learning in. We recently set aside $883 million to go towards 480 new, modern, 21st century learning environments around New Zealand, two school expansions and nine brand new schools. Locally, this will see the expansion of Ormiston Primary School and new schools like the proposed Flat Bush South East Primary and Ormiston
Junior College. New Zealand’s education system is doing well on the whole, but there’s still more than can be done to lift those that are under-achieving. As local MPs, we often also hear about the need for more support for children with learning difficulties or special needs. A $15m investment will be made into special education to increase teacher-aid hours and specialist hearing and vision equipment. This will help make it easier for students to participate in the classroom. Research is also helping to inform future education funding. We know from our social investment research that students from long-term welfare-dependent families are at greater risk of underachieving at school. Children aged between six and 14, who have been supported by benefits for three-quarters of their lives, have only a 48 per cent chance of achieving NCEA Level 2 by age 21. By
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany contrast, 73 per cent of the general population will have NCEA Level 2 by that age. Education Minister Hekia Parata has budgeted funds to provide additional targeted support into schools for students who have spent a significant proportion of their lives in benefitdependent households. Students most at risk of educational failure will then have greater access to the resources and support they need. Investing in New Zealand’s future starts with investing in education. Every New Zealander deserves the opportunity to advance in life and be provided with the best tools to do so from an early age. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Home fires under flak this winter By Marianne Kelly

any SuperCity residents breathed a sigh of relief that they could continue to use their open fires and older wood burners through last year’s winter after Auckland Council did a U-turn on a ban. But Olivia Powell of Cockle Bay is not one of them. She wants someone to take a pollution test on the air quality in Howick and Cockle Bay, especially at 7-9pm at night. “I went for a walk tonight and it is so bad the entire area is covered in smog from fires. I really can’t get over it,” she says.
“We used to live in Mission Heights where all homes have heat pumps or other types of heating. The air was lovely and fresh/crisp. This must be seriously bad for one’s health.” Last month the council confirmed there was no ban on the use of open fireplaces or pre-2005 wood burners inside Auckland homes. But it emphasised that the council’s restrictions on burning rubbish, wet wood, tanalised timber and high sulphur coal remain in effect. The Times asked the council whether it did quality tests throughout the city on winter evenings. Daniel Lawrence-Sansbury, manager natural resources and specialist input, says the council is required to

monitor air pollution levels to demonstrate compliance with the 2004 National Environmental Standards for Air Quality, as well as its own regional air quality targets. It monitors on a continuous basis at multiple sites. The South-East Auckland monitoring site is on Pakuranga Road, established in June 1988. Current information from the site says that air quality is generally good most of time. Air pollution sources are mainly from residential home heating (during winter) and vehicle emissions (particularly at the busy roadside). Information on the council’s website says the monitored CO (carbon monoxide) concentrations on Pakuranga Road meet national environmental standards for air quality. PM (particulate matter)-10 concentrations at the site usually meet national environmental standards for air quality, although they are exceeded occasionally. In many towns in New Zealand, PM10 peaks in the winter when air temperatures and wind speeds are lowest as more people heat their homes during colder weather. During the still conditions there is no wind to disperse the air pollutants, Mr Lawrence-Sansbury says. So does the council actively monitor who is burning the nasty stuff? Mr Lawrence-Sansbury says the use of fire places in Auckland is permitted, provided no rubbish or treated wood is burnt, and that the smoke is not excessive to the extent that it is considered offensive or objectionable to neighbourhood properties. “In cases where a complaint has been made from a neighbouring property, we attend and assess emissions from home heating fires. If excessive smoke is found we will work with the responsible party to establish what they are burning and inform them of their emissions level and what is expected.” Last year complaints about pollution from household chimneys throughout the SuperCity peaked at 45, 38 and 46 in May, June and July. In May and June this year complaints were 31 and 38.
GLOWING: One of the pleasantries in life is being able to enjoy the warmth and aesthetics of an open fire indoors. Photo supplied
In 2015 about 100,000 domestic fireplaces and wood burners were in use in Auckland, Mr Lawrence-Sansbury says. Of these, 31,400 were wood burners, mainly installed since 2005 and 1200 pellet fires that meet the current national air quality standards. However still in use throughout the SuperCity are 53,700 pre 2005 non-complying wood burners and 13,700 open fireplaces, most of which do not comply with the standards. In the 10 years to 2015 about 40,800 open fireplaces and old pre-205 wood burners were upgraded to lower emission home heating options, such as a heat pump, gas heating or a modern wood burner that complies with the standards.
Open fire and wood burner advice ■■ Buy and burn dry, aged firewood to minimise smoke. Wet fire wood is hard to light, burns
with more smoke and throws off less heat. ■■ Keep the fire burning brightly. This keeps smoke to a minimum and stops residue building up in the flue. ■■ Wood is better than coal. Use low sulphur coal to reduce sulphur emissions. ■■ Don’t burn wood that is painted, tanalised or treated with preservatives, such as treated building materials. These can generate toxic substances in smoke and ash. ■■ Don’t burn rubbish or green waste. It’s also the result of strong migration and a strong economy. “But I don’t think anyone gets the sense that Auckland Council ‘has matters under control’,” he says. “So the
last thing the city needs is a new ‘Soviet-style’, central planning agency.” Mr Church says there is some irony in the fact that the multi-city structure of Auckland before creation of the SuperCity would have been much better equipped to handle the current housing problem. “Under the old structure cities competed with each other for residential development and investment,” he says. “So, by now, you would have expected to have seen areas throughout the isthmus opened up for commercial and residential development in a way which would also have encouraged private investment at a local level.”

Power, Genesis and Meridian was a huge success and, at the time, solved a problem that was every bit as serious as the Auckland housing crisis.” Mr Church proposes the Government take the same approach to housing by establishing a series of competing Urban Development Authorities, possibly domiciled in different parts of Auckland, but with free rein to operate throughout the SuperCity. He says these could be Crown-owned entities, Council-controlled organisations (CCOs) or a combination of both. The creation of the SuperCity, he says, provides a stark example of why a single authority isn’t the solu-

roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive, Ashley Church, is asking the Government to consider setting up multiple Urban Development Authorities in Auckland rather than the single authority which is being proposed. Last week Prime Minister John Key floated the idea of a single agency to oversee major building projects, buy building sites, master-plan large residential developments and partner with private sector groups to deliver them. The idea was first proposed by the Productivity Commission last year. Mr Church says that competition and private investment are the keys to fasttracking the development of new housing projects in Auckland and is encouraging the Government to consider a commercially focused multiple-agency approach along the lines of the energy company reforms of the 1990s. “Most of the focus of those reforms was on price competition,” he says. “But we forget that an equally important aspect of them was a need to rapidly find new ways to generate energy and avoid “brown-outs”. In that regard the creation of Mighty River

wo south-eastern singing students are heading to an international choral festival in Canada as part of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir. Sixteen-year-old soprano Emily Briggs, a Year 12 student at Macleans College and Emily Young, a 17-year-old alto in Year 13 at St Kentigern College are members of the 60-strong choir which will take part in the International Choral Kathaumixw Festival in Powell River, British Columbia in July. The singers have been invited to the festival as this year’s guest choir. Briggs says the choir will perform one or two concerts a day which will be “intense, but nice”. “Each one will be in front of a different audience which will have a different feeling.
Something is always different because of the peoples’ reaction and the songs never get boring.” She started singing for fun when she was four. It wasn’t until she performed in a New Zealand Opera children’s chorus when she was 11 that she realised how much she enjoyed singing and wanted to pursue a singing career. “Since then I have taken every opportunity to sing I can.” Performances include singing in New Zealand Opera’s Opera Factory, Macleans College musical performances, along with playing the oboe in the school’s orchestra and concert band. She’s been studying under international opera soprano Gina Sanders for four years. “I can hear how my voice has changed in that time. lish, also Latin, Italian, French and German.” Meanwhile Young was encouraged to audition for the choir by St Kentigern’s director of choirs, Lachlan Craig, an alumnae of the choir when he was a St Kentigern student in 2007/2008. These days he’s a guest vocal coach for the choir. Emily has been singing since she was in Year 9 when Mr Craig suggested she audition for St Kent’s premiere choir and she took up formal singing lessons. Her main aspiration is to perform in large-scale musical theatre productions. “Ever since I first saw live musicals I have been inspired to perform on the stage.” Drama is one of her school subjects and she takes part in St Kentigern theatrical productions. She’s also a cellist in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orchestra However, she will start a classical degree in performance voice at Auckland University next year. And she is about to get a head start. She’s been awarded a George Turner Wilson Music Trust scholarship to start studying in university’s second semester this year under the university’s vocal studies leader, Dr Te Oti Paipete Rakene. ■■ Former Macleans College student, tenor Peter Liley will make the Canadian tour with the choir as part of the 2015/2016 New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir intake. He is currently studying at Victoria University, Wellington.

Getting behind worthy local fundraising activity is also an important aspect of being a local community shopping centre. “We may be perceived as a Noddy Town style of centre,” says Mr Waller, “but this opens the doors to a less structured administration to which the bigger malls are tied to and not able to offer casual regular support for fundraising.” Currently, the Highland Park Shopping Centre is supporting an initiative by Brian Paladin of Eurostar entertainment who is hosting a dinner-dance, auction, raffle and entertainment for Cruze Elricks ‘Can you ear me?’ campaign. It is to enable Cruze to go to the States to have a new ear. Highland Park Shopping Centre has provided support by buying a table for the fundraiser along with providing raffles and auction items as well as becoming a collection point at the centre’s management office—for both businesses and the public to donate goods/services towards the evening’s event being held at The Howick Club on July 2. The Highland Park Library is a great asset to have in the area. Working alongside Mr Waller and the shopping centre has a dual spin off for both parties. “It’s great to have an enthusiastic contact in the form of Tina Brown, Highland Park senior librarian and her consistent badgering (which is always positive and welcomed) for support, activity and incentives. It keeps
the alliance alive,” says Mr Waller. School holidays coming up in July will see kids drawing activity in the centre showcasing the Library and membership drive. Pakuranga under 21 Rugby Team: This is the second year that Higland Park Shopping Centre has sponsored the team. Supporting Pakuranga College Business Studies & Economics by mentoring and providing financial assistance for both the Dragons’ Den style presentations and practical implementation. The partnership has been an exciting marriage of convenience over the past two years. “We were originally approached by year 13 student Tony, two years ago, to assist in his Frisbee business project. It proved to be beneficial for both the school and Shopping Centre as Tony went on to win awards for the project,” says Bruce Waller centre manager Highland Park Shopping Centre.
From left to right: Frank Wu, Chayil Coupe and Jamil Ditta.
“This year, Tom Lyall Business Studies teacher and co-ordinator met up with me,” says Mr Waller, “and a Dragons’ Den style presentation by students wishing to gain start-up capital for their projects was devised.” Highland Park Shopping Centre put up the capital, presentations were held in front of a judging panel and funds for the project were allocated on a best use basis. “This type of sponsorship is real and it’s great to see the students expand their learning ability with practical, measureable and accountable enthusiasm,” he says.

“We signed with Suzanne more than 6 months before our house was put on the market (as we were building). When looking for a suitable agent for our house, Suzanne was the only one who showed up with helpful documents and market information in a well presented manner. It was an easy decision to sign with Suzanne, and we felt very comfortable and confident during the entire sales process. Suzanne and her team were extremely professional, who went above and beyond our expectations. We would highly recommend Suzanne and her team to anyone looking to sell their homes!” — Chantal and Sarah
“Suzanne was a total professional from the beginning. She was available anytime to answer questions we had and gave us honest feedback. We believe she did her very best for us and delivered on Auction day. She exceeded our expectations. We were very happy and would have no hesitation in recommending her. Her team also delivered exceptional service and were professional, friendly and great to deal with, nothing was ever too much trouble. All round a fantastic team who delivered exceptional service who we will continue to recommend. We wish Suzanne and her team a prosperous future.” — Tania and Mike
Our clients are our No. 1 priority and for us it’s not just about real estate; it’s more about people. See what our customers have to say about us!

Selectors faced with amazing talent pool W
hile the All Black selectors deserve to celebrate a comprehensive 3-0 rugby test series win against Wales, they face some crucial decisions ahead of them. Faced with an embarrassment of talent, they must continue to make smart choices or risk losing gifted, disenchanted players to big spending French, British and Japanese clubs. Never has the backline talent depth been as great as it is now despite the retirement from international rugby of icons Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith. Against Wales the two Smiths, Aaron and Ben, again confirmed their world class status and were joined by comeback kid Israel Dagg and Beauden Barrett who were sensational in the 44-6 Dunedin triumph. Such was the speedy Barrett’s brilliance that he has probably overcome the gifted Aaron Cruden as the first choice first five for the upcoming Rugby Champion-

ship against Australia, South Africa and Argentina. Renowned as a brilliant attacker, it was the improvement in his option taking, passing game and seven of eight goal-kicking that crowned his promotion to a starting berth. No less sensational was Dagg, who failed to win a World Cup spot last year, but whose fine return in Wellington was eclipsed in Dunedin where his dazzling runs almost totalled 200 metres. With Ben Smith confirming he’s as great a right wing as he is a fullback, it will be interesting to see whether the selectors keep him and Dagg at 14 and 15 respectively. If they do, that would leave Waisake Naholo and Julian Savea to battle for the left wing spot. Both had handling problems against Wales though no one doubts their attacking dynamism. Meanwhile, the midfield dilemma remains despite a solid showing by Ryan Crotty and a strong one
Agnew’s Angle from George Moala at centre when given his chance in Dunedin. Charlie Ngatai was the best second-five in Super Rugby and was unlucky that his lingering concussion prevented him from playing against the Welsh. With Sonny Bill Williams returning after the Rio Olympics, the only spot up for grabs looks to be centre where the strong running Moala deserves a second chance. That is a position where Barrett could also excel had he not shown he deserves to be the starting first-five. If all else fails, the selectors could gamble not on Naholo, tried briefly there last Saturday night, but Dagg, who has the speed and superb offloading skills to set free his wings. That way Ben Smith could return to fullback where he is
the world’s best and Naholo move back to the right wing where he looks most suited. However he will need to make hay while the sun shines in the absence of the mercurial Nehe MilnerSkudder who will challenge for his old spot back when he fully recovers from surgery. With so much talent available, the All Black selectors have so many options which can be as much a problem as it can a solution. How long, for example, does exciting Damian McKenzie have to wait for a crack at either first-five or fullback? Although the forwards don’t have the same depth, the selectors will draw huge satisfaction from the performances of new caps Ardie Savea, Elliot Dixon and Liam Squire. Coming off the bench, Savea had a huge impact in Wellington, as did Squire in Dunedin. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Warriors popup store brings in the fans
The Vodafone Warriors opened their first pop-up store last week at Hunters Plaza in Papatoetoe. Several of the big stars turned up for the occasion - Manu Vatuvei, Roger Tuivasa Scheck, Ali Lauitiiti and Bodene Thompson all signed autographs and took selfies with the many hundreds of fans. Hunters Plaza casual mall leasing manager Dean Butler, of Pakuranga, said the night was a huge success. “It’s not often the fans can get up close and personal like this, especially for the kids,” said Thompson. There’s nothing better than getting a photo or autograph with your favourite player, and the guys are great with the fans, It was a real pleasure having them here.”

PURC notch up third win in a row By NICK KRAUSE Pita Alatini is taking each game on one match at a time. It’s a strategy that seems to be working for Pakuranga United’s premier team coach. Pakuranga beat Marist 30-22 at the weekend. With three wins on the trot now, he and the team are feeling bullish. “I feel relief for a little bit and then really stoked for our group,” says Alatini, a former All Black and now the club’s director of rugby. But the going is going to be tough if the team wants to stay in the run for the top four in the Auckland premier rugby competition. “We are sitting fifth at the moment, one point away from Grammar Tec who we play this weekend,” says Alatini. “The competition this year has been so tight. We were bottom of the table two weeks ago and now, with a couple of wins, we are up to fifth.” Every team in the Alan McEvoy round has lost a game so the pressure is on. “Since we dropped the first two games, every game has become a must-win game and this week is no different. If we want to stay in the run for the top four, then a win will steer us in the right direction,” he says. “Three big rounds to go but we can’t look further than this weekend.” He says the team has managed to get some self-belief back in the group.

“I feel there is a mutual respect amongst them which has led them to be tighter but, more importantly, enjoying each other’s company on and off the field.”
ot many people can say that they get to celebrate their 10th birthday by winning a third world championship title. But that’s exactly what Sacha Earnest did on May 25 at the UCI 2016 BMX World Championships held in Medellin, Colombia. Sacha rode her way to victory in the 10 year girls’ category, having won her first world title in 2013 in Auckland, backing it up winning again in 2014 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Last year at Zolder, Belgium, she came second in the 9 year girls’ final. After a bit of a break from BMX (she also rides mountain bikes and swims), Sacha was determined to get back on top of the podium. She had a six week focused training programme after her New Zealand season of racing leading up to this year’s BMX World Championships which worked perfectly as Sacha out-skilled the rest of her competitors to dominate every race, including the final. The conditions in Colombia were testing at times as it

was hot, humid and at altitude. And the track was built next to an airport so races had to be stopped at times for low flying planes. Sacha is also a 2014 AMP National Scholarship recipient and an ambassador for the programme. She will also be involved in the 2016 AMP Scholarships with will launch on July 14.
