petitions and mouth platitudes like “dance is more than movement. “It’s a lot more than what you see,” says Morgan who has been there and danced that! “It is a mindset. When you don’t get through in a competition you shouldn’t give up. Just keep going.” Shalom interjects saying: “I love competitions. The adrenalin and the rush when the crowd is screaming, is simply amazing! It feels great to feed off everyone’s energy.” She says was overwhelmed when she heard she was selected by Ashley Medcalfe to be part of the A-team that goes to Florida in April. “I was screaming and crying,” she says. Both Morgan and she are thrilled to be competing with different nations at the international hip hop competition. They say: “We are more than happy to dance eight hours a day!

“Competitions are full on. There is a lot of endurance and strength work involved.” Elaine McKellar, head of the department of dance at Pakuranga College says: “It’s great to see them grow in terms of skills and flexibility in how they move. “I’m very proud to be teaching them and they will be our leaders for the ‘Bring It On Auckland Secondary School Dance competition’.” Shalom says: “Someday I’d like to have my own hip hop dance studio and make it free. There are so many people out there who are good dancers but can’t afford to join classes.” The passion and commitment the teenage hip hop dancers share is extraordinary. It’s as if they are born to dance. Putting into words her passion for dance, Sophie ends saying: “To me, a day without dance is a day without water.”

HE transformation is mindboggling! From a reticent, softspoken 13-year-old to unleashing power and aggression on the dance floor, Sophie de Renzy’s diminutive frame takes another persona. Suddenly she is larger than life— exuding a fierce inner strength with rhythm and grace. The new routine she’s training for is mesmeric! There’s something entrancing about the way Sophie moves. It doesn’t take long to figure out why this year 9, hip hop dancer from Pakuranga College is part of the Bubblegum dance crew led by the multiple award-winning hip hop dancer and choreographer Parris Goebel. Being a part of Parris’ dancing crew at The Palace is a badge she proudly wears. Sophie unabashedly looks up to the 23-year-old hip hop champion
and choreographer known to have worked with the likes of J-Lo and Nicki Minaj. The dedicated dancer, who is young enough to be part of the junior crew, says she couldn’t stop crying when her name was announced on facebook. It was a step closer to her dreams of being a back-up dancer to Beyonce someday. Currently, Sophie has been selected to defend Bubblegum’s title of dance champions “and if we win nationally, which I think we will, we will be going to San Diego,” she says confidently. Sitting with her in the Pakuranga College dance studio are the vivacious duo, 14-year-old Morgan Buckley and 15-year-old Shalom Teikamata. Both are part of the Insseption dance crew led by Ashley Medcalfe. They are regulars at dance com-

THE young man killed in a collision in Whitford last Tuesday morning was a devoted son, brother and friend. Klay Huxtable, 28, was heading home when his grey Toyota sedan drifted across the centre line into the path of a black 4WD driven by Dr Nikki Retford on the corner of Waikopua and WhitfordMaraetai Roads just before 6am. The 35-year-old Beachlands woman’s car was largely unscathed and the mother of three was taken to Middlemore Hospital with minor injuries. A police officer on his way to work called emergency services including the Beachlands Volunteer Fire Brigade and St John Ambulance paramedics. But Mr Huxtable was pronounced dead at the scene. Counties Manukau Police’s serious crash unit is investigating the collision which resulted in road closure for nearly five hours. The eldest of three, Mr Huxtable worked in events at Vector Arena. Speaking on behalf of his family, Mr Huxtable’s younger brother Floyd Huxtable told the Times that his colleagues knew him as a dependable worker who “thrived on hard work”. The family – including partner, Pania Wirihana, brother Vinnie Wilson and mother Helen Christian – have been “hit so hard”, says Floyd. The community and friends of Mr Huxtable rallied together, gathering at his Beachlands home that he shared with Ms Wirihana and Ms Christian’s which was just down the road from her son. “Hundreds of people have stopped by to see if our family’s okay. We’ve had flowers and visits from people we haven’t seen in 10-15 years,” Floyd says. “He was an outstanding friend and was just a natural at anything. He’s one of those natural leaders that people would look to,” he says. ➤ Turn to Page 2

Rail tunnels a step closer A
GREEMENT has been reached to get the City Rail Link (CRL) in Central Auckland underway. The deal between Auckland Council and Precinct Properties enables the new rail tunnels to be constructed through the site presently occupied by the Downtown Shopping Centre, owned by Precinct Properties, along with two adjacent commercial office towers, HSBC Tower and Zurich House in Queen Street. As a result Queen Elizabeth Square will be sold to Precinct for $27.2 million and the council will pay Precinct $9 million to provide an east-west pedestrian laneway between Queen and Albert Streets and to compensate for the tunnels’ volume. An additional $10.7 million will be paid for the additional costs of office tower construction resulting from the CRL tunnels. A new downtown civic space

Mayor Len Brown says the agreement is the key to a number of projects that will kick-off the creation of a world-class downtown area, including improvements to public space, transport facilities and urban design. Improvements include replacing the aging 40-year-old Downtown shopping centre with

Key views to important adjacent heritage buildings, including the ferry building, Customhouse and the Dilworth building will be protected. Construction of the Downtown section is expected to be complete by 2019.
Nothing but love for family and friends ➤➤From page 1 “All his mates loved him and he would do anything for them. His house was one of the centre hubs.” That loyalty also extended to his family. “He was a great brother. Everything you could ever want from a big brother that was him,” Floyd says. “I know he would die for me and Vinnie. He would always protect us, look out for us and teach us. He had nothing but love for us.” The former Howick College student had worked in commercial fishing and the building and painting industries before working in events.

NEWS BITES Dangerous fires increasing A SPATE of arson attacks across the south-east since the beginning of the year continues to be under investigation. Detective sergeant Glenn Wilkinson, of Counties Manukau East Police Ormiston CIB says 11 scrub fires have been lit in the Howick area since January. “These have occurred in local reserves and children’s play areas, usually bordering residential houses, he says. “On each occasion they have been set between 6-11pm.” The Fire Service says an increase in small arsons has occurred across the Counties Manukau East district, but a particular increase has been noted in the south-east area, including Pigeon Mountain, Bucklands Beach and Musick Point. “Recent hot and dry conditions mean that these fires have the potential to spread to the nearby residential housing, which is putting lives and properties at risk,” Mr Wilkinson says. “We ask that anyone who knows anything about these incidents or might know who is responsible to contact the police. Members of the public are always encouraged to call 111 when suspicious behaviour is noticed, especially around reserves and playgrounds. People with information on deliberately-lit fires in East Auckland can phone Mr Wilkinson on 250-3014, or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800-555-111. HREE local actors have taken out honours in regional awards held each year to acknowledge the work of theatres throughout the SuperCity. Pakuranga’s Anton Bentley and Stacey and Mark Harrison of Dannemora won three categories in the recent Northern Area Performance Theatre Awards (NAPTA). Their production, The Opposite Sex, performed by the Papakura Theatre
Company last November, took out the best overall play award. The play was nominated for nine awards and included in its six wins were Mr Bentley for best supporting actor, Ms Harrison for best actress, and Mr Harrison for best actor. Mr Bentley is head of drama at Macleans College. The award was the result of his first NAPTA nomination and win. It was also the first time he had worked at the Papakura Theatre Company. Mr
Bentley has a long-time association with Howick Little Theatre and will direct Mary’s Wedding playing at HLT next September and October. Ms Harrison grew up in Howick, attending Howick College, and has taken part in past HLT and Harlequin Theatre, Howick, productions. She and her husband Mark met at HLT 10 years ago and they often play on-stage husband and wife roles. She has been head of drama and
Community services promoted WATCH out for volunteers from the local Citizens Advice Bureau this week as they celebrate Race Relations Day and promote awareness of the services CABs offer. Pakuranga-Eastern Manukau Citizens Advice Bureau staff and volunteers will man a stand from 11am-2pm this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Pakuranga Plaza, encouraging customers to engage with the volunteers. On Saturday they will be back from 10am-noon celebrating Race Relations Day and the diversity of New Zealand’s culture. While information sometimes is a click away, with social media, Google and smartphones,
an increasing number of New Zealanders continue to turn to their local CAB for information and advice. Last year CAB volunteers nationally received more than 520,000 enquiries about issues ranging from immigration, housing and employment, to consumer rights, health and family issues. Over the same time CAB Pakuranga-Eastern Manukau dealt with 13,249 enquiries, the most common including budgeting advice, separation and relationship issues, consumer queries and disputes. Local CAB manager, Louise Boswell says people appreciate the chance to talk to someone
in person about their problems. “Although there’s great information out there, a lot of people want help to work out Louise Boswell Times photo Wayne Martin how that information relates to them, and that’s where we can help. IT’S been frazzling people, but work on a busy thoroughfare is reaching a conclusion. The rehabilitation work at Gossamer Drive was started in February to repair the road pavement which, Auckland Transport (AT) said, was cracking and rutting in a number of locations. Last Thursday the contractors poured the kerbs on Wyman Place. They are also carrying out topsoiling and reinstatement works, as well as completing 20 metres of channel outside Elm Park School. Business owners in Gossamer Drive have been frustrated with the time the work is taking. One says she and three other businesses are being affected by the roadworks with sales down more than 50-60 per cent. Another one says she was forced to close her business for three days because the works were leaving no room for customers to park. AT says night shifts are booked for asphalt surfacing works on April 7, 8 and 9.
Help for guide puppies VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed to collect funds to help the Blind Foundation breed and train guide dogs. The Red Puppy Appeal street collection will be held on March 27-28. Guide dogs give people who are blind or have low vision the freedom and confidence to live an independent life, particularly with activities like catching the bus, crossing the road and going to work. Alison Wheatley, Blind Foundation spokesperson says guide dog puppies go through two years of rigorous training before they graduate. Once assigned, their working life averages between eight and 10 years. The average time spent waiting for a guide dog is about 12 months, but it can take longer if people have specific needs. To sign up as a volunteer for the Red Puppy Appeal, go to www.redpuppy.org.nz or phone 0800-120-254.

Prasad was burnt alive By Natalie Brittan
T
HE body of Shalvin Prasad was burnt to the extent a forensic expert could not tell if it was male or female, the Auckland High Court heard last week. Shivneel Shahil Kumar, 21, and Bryne Permal, 22, went on trial early this month for the 2013 murder of Mr Prasad who withdrew $30,050, his life savings, on the day of his death while Kumar looked on. The smouldering remains of the former Botany Downs Secondary College student were found the next morning in McRobbie Rd, Franklin. The 21-year-old Dannemora resident worked at Botany Pak’n Save in the time leading up to his death. Forensic pathologist Dr Fintan Garavan described the burns suffered by Mr Prasad as “extensive”. “Up until the point of retrieving [the body’s genitals] I did not know if it was female or a male,” he told the court. Dr Garavan found extensive burns and “charring” in the head and said the left side of Mr Prasad’s upper body was largely “burnt away”. It included his left ribcage and internal organs, such as his spleen, left kidney and pancreas which were “destroyed” while

PM’s Education Excellence Awards WITH the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards now open, Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is encouraging locals to apply. The awards recognise and celebrate outstanding achievements in early childhood education, primary and secondary schooling. “Our education professionals work hard every day for our children, and I believe we need to publicly recognise and
encourage their contribution,” Mr Ross says. “The Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards do just that. They celebrate the people in our communities delivering the best teaching to children, those who raise the bar that bit higher. The awards cover early childhood education, primary, through to secondary schooling.” The four main categories are excellence in governing,
excellence in leading, excellence in teaching and learning, and excellence in engaging. Category winners will receive $20,000, and the supreme winner will receive an additional $30,000. This year the education focus prize celebrates a focus on collaboration creating learner-led pathways from early childhood to schooling. “I want to encourage people to apply for these awards,” Mr

tured as a result of the heat and there was no evidence of blunt force trauma and head or neck injury which could lead to brain swelling or unconsciousness, he said. Later, questioned by Kumar’s defence lawyer, Ron Mansfield, Dr Garavan said he could not rule out all injury due to the absence of some parts of the body. Dr Garavan described Mr Prasad’s buttocks, upper back and palms of the hands as “relatively spared”, which could suggest he was lying down at the time of his burning. If Mr Prasad had been restrained, Dr Garavan confirmed the bindings could have burnt away. Two weeks ago a fire expert told the jury the fire had been lit from a gutter by the road, rather than directly from the body, making it possible for someone who was alive and conscious to run from the fire. Several scenarios were put to Dr Garavan by Mr Mansfield, including the possibility of a fall or asphyxiation, both of which could lead to unconsciousness, and he confirmed that they were possible although he had found no evidence of both. The trial continues in front of Justice Geoffrey Venning and a jury of six men and women.
Ross says. “We have so many talented people in Botany; I have witnessed this during visits to our local schools and early childhood centres. “High-quality education provides the opportunity for any child from any background to get ahead and make the most of their life, and the teachers who contribute to this should be celebrated.” Entry forms are available at www.pmawards.education.govt. nz. Council will consider city smoke-free
A recommendation to bring forward Auckland’s Smoke-free Policy review was well received by councillors at the recent Auckland Council governing body meeting and the review will start in the coming months. The recommendation was made due to large public interest in the outdoor dining aspect of the Trading and Events in Public Places Bylaw which was adopted recently. Although smoke-free dining is not a regulation of the bylaw, more than 1300 submissions were received from the Cancer Society, Auckland Regional Public Health Service and individuals on the subject. “The panel felt keenly the passion of the submitters on this topic and the need to expedite the review of the Smoke-free Policy,” says councillor Denise Krum, chair of the hearings panel on the bylaw. “We wish to consider the wider areas the policy should cover, such as town squares and beaches. “Once the review is complete, we will be giving Aucklanders the opportunity to give their feedback on smoke-free public places.” The council currently has one of the most comprehensive smoke-free policies in the nation in terms of public places and is in the process of expanding this, she says. Phase one, including playgrounds and transport centres, was adopted in 2013 and council is now in phase two of the policy which will make shared spaces and plazas smoke-free. Signage for these areas and the beginning of an awareness campaign will start mid-year. The purpose of the Smoke-free Policy Review is to determine if a smoke-free bylaw is necessary for public places, including outdoor dining areas. The council will start the policy review in the second half of this year and public consultation needs to be undertaken to understand the region’s views on a smoke free bylaw.

Matthew Walker, the council’s general manager financial planning, says the calculator is an educational tool designed to give Aucklanders a greater understanding of the council’s budget. “The budget calculator,” he says, “is all about giving Aucklanders a chance to sit in the driver’s seat and experiment with the budget. “It demonstrates how and where councils spend money, as well as the trade-offs made when you decide to spend less or more.” The calculator, set at the proposed levels of spending in the council’s 10-year budget, looks at various spending areas – transport; parks; community and lifestyle; economy, tourism, events and culture; Auckland development, environment and regulatory. On finishing, the calculator produces three graphs showing the impact of each user’s spend on debt, assets and rates over the 10-year period. The calculator can be found online at www.shapeauckland.co.nz/ budgetcalculator. It does not include all areas of council spending and numbers are approximate. Public consultation on the council’s 10-year budget closes today. Feedback can be made through an online feedback form at www.shapeauckland.co.nz, a hard copy form found at council libraries, service centres and local board offices, or using social media.

Community event tops at retail mall C
HANGE is inevitable, according to Counties Manukau Police district crime prevention officer senior police constable Gary Bowles. Happy with the overwhelming response to Botany’s recent Community Day, he reckons that the thriving Botany Town Centre has foot traffic of almost 70,000 people on a weekend. One of the event organisers, he says that next year the community day is going to be even bigger with a carnival also planned. Held at the shopping mall, on March 7, there were around 45 community groups participating in the event.
Crew of the Howick Fire Brigade were spotted responding to a lot of queries from passersby. Richard Irving who has been a volunteer fire-fighter for the last 12 years said he’s learnt better life skills. “It’s great to get out there and help people,” he said. A builder by profession, the 29-year-old from the fire brigade volunteer team carries a pager that beeps and drops everything he is doing the moment the call of duty beckons. “There’s a sense of adventure, and the atmosphere is great! I’d definitely recommend it to anyone!”

Travelling politician on the road Black out on coast OF LATE, Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has been travelling in a brightly painted caravan. It has left people wondering if he is planning to take off on a tour around the country. Mr Ross says there are no such plans. The idea behind the teal blue caravan is that it doubles up as an office on site. “I can now take the caravan to community events so that if people want to talk to me in confidence, we can sit in the caravan and have a one-on-one discussion.” And before anyone jump to conclusions, he makes it a point to mention, “I bought this from my own money and not the tax payer’s funds.” Point noted, Mr Ross.

AN EARLY morning crash in Whitford last Friday caused a power outage affecting more than 1000 homes. A car drove into a power pole on Whitford-Maraetai Road near the Clifton Road intersection at about 4am. No injuries were recorded but the damaged power line caused a power cut to the suburbs of Beachlands, Maraetai, Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay and Waiheke Island. Power was restored to the 1143 homes affected by 7.35am. The incident was the second road accident of the week to happen on the same stretch, following a fatal crash earlier last Tuesday.

TAX returns are more complicated than many people think. What is the difference between refundable tax credits and non-refundable tax credits? What are the eligible deductions for self-employed workers? It isn’t always easy to answer all these questions and to know all the programs and deductions which could help save a lot of money. Every year thousands of dollars are lost by taxpayers because they are ignorant about the system. Taxpayers should never rely on the Government to tell them their rights about what tax credits they are eligible for. This is their responsibility which
is why it is important to know basic tax law. A range of accounting software is available. But not all programs are miracle-workers and won’t ask about personal situations. For example, some taxpayers are eligible for certain deductions if they have children, if they are registered for sporting activities, if they have a physical handicap, if they have moved for work reasons, and for many other reasons. However, accounting software is good for taxpayers with fairly simple tax positions. For example, single adults who have no assets or people on social

By Marianne Kelly A YEAR or three ago I had a fascinating chat with a chef who had introduced to his unassuming family kitchen a highly organised pantry ingredients system any professional brigade would have been proud of. Ajay Zalte, executive chef at Novotel-Auckland Airport, and his wife Raji had organised their dry foods pantry and cupboards into a cacophony of international cuisine ingredients, all carefully organised into ethnic categories. It meant that Ajay and Raji could decide “shall we eat European or Indian tonight and go to the appropriate shelf.

The Japanese-Asian shelves displayed an array of Indian dried spices in airtight jars, nuts and pulses, and Ajay’s favourite, a small mortar and pestle, dedicated to preparing cardamom and ginger tea. Above were lined up bottles of Asian condiments, such as fish sauce and Chinese rice wine. Stacks of airtight plastic containers included tapioca
(used in savoury dishes), rice flakes, semolina and a variety of flours. A European section included pomegranate molasses, Kalamata olives, HP sauce, Coleman’s mustard and Maldon sea salt from England. But in pride of place were the beautiful New Zealand products Ajay had discovered in New Zealand – fresh honeycomb, gold
kiwi liqueur, kelp, the native horopito herb dried or as mustard, Manuka honey, crayfish oil, mussel horopito oil, freeze dried tamarillo powder, and his favourite South Island saffron. It was enough for me to attack my pantry and fridge contents with gusto. Out came the plastic containers in which to sit the herbs and spices in ethnic order, another one for the oils and sauces and yet another for
the refrigerated condiments. The pantry can become a real combat zone, with dry staples spilling out of their bags, powdered spices covering the shelves, and there may even be a mouse in there somewhere. When the pantry is a total mess, nothing can be found and, when it is, it’s way past its expiry date. Here are three steps for solving the problem:

ethnic organisation Sort Before reorganizing, a major cleanup is required. Empty the pantry and wash the shelves with a non-toxic cleaning product. Take an inventory of what you have; you may find that some foods are duplicated and some are no longer edible. Sort everything, discarding expired foodstuffs and setting aside for the food bank any unopened items that you’ll never use.

Store If you want your pantry to be an effective storage space for your food, it all has to be clearly visible. Use clear containers made of plastic or glass to store your various foods. Opt for square or rectangular containers, as they stack and store nicely; round containers tend to waste space. Place your flour, cereals, rice, and pulses in airtight containers to keep them out of reach of insects. If necessary, label the containers.

LEGENDARY former Silver Fern Irene van Dyk has been unveiled as Netball New Zealand’s (NNZ) official ambassador for the development of netball, from grassroots through to high performance. Van Dyk retired from international netball last year. The 42-year-old continues to play in the ANZ Championship for the Central Pulse. NNZ chief executive Hilary Poole says van Dyk was the natural appointment due to her iconic status and long-term involvement in the sport over many years. “These is no one else as admired and recognisable as Irene van Dyk in world netball, despite her hanging up her Silver Ferns playing dress last season,” Poole says. “She was our first choice to fill the ambassador role as someone who embodies everything we value about netball and we are really delighted to have her join the NNZ team.” Van Dyk will be the face of netball throughout the country and will attend formal NNZ functions as well as engaging in the community and promoting the game at a grassroots level. “Irene has been engaged to further enhance the work we are doing at NNZ to continue to raise the profile of netball at all levels,” Poole added. “We think it’s a fantastic alignment.” Van Dyk is eager to get started in her new role. “I am so honoured and absolutely thrilled to be the Netball New Zealand ambassador,” she says. “This is a wonderful opportunity for me and I’m going to grasp it with both hands. For me, it’s a dream job.”

Cycling NZ’s base in Cambridge two to three days a week. “It will give BMX a face at Cycling NZ. We are kind of a poor cousin; it’s mainly road and track. “It will give us more leeway in the sport.” The move means Earnest has had to end his tenure as Mountain Raiders president, but he will remain a club member and rider. “The club is still home,” he says. Michael Batterton, BMX New Zealand chairman, says: “Applications were received from throughout New Zealand, along with a number of international submissions and few from within the New Zealand BMX community. “We have succeeded in recruiting Dion away from a successful commercial and marketing career in Auckland, to work within the sport which he is so passionate. “Dion and his family, Anna, Jake and Sacha, are well known in the sport, both as competitors and through their connections to the Mountain Raiders BMX Club. Dion’s success in leading the growth of the club and developing an outstanding track facility was one of the reasons why the opportunity was taken to appoint him to this position.”

ION Earnest’s passion for BMX cycling has earned him the position of the sport’s only paid staff member in New Zealand. The outgoing president of Mountain Raiders BMX Club in Lloyd Elsmore Park started as the executive officer of BMX New Zealand last week. The position was created by BMX NZ following a review and overhaul of the sport’s management structure. Among the strategies Earnest is charged with is continuing the growth of BMX, particularly at grassroots level, as well as establishing elite rider development programmes. “It’s going to be very exciting and interesting,” he says. “My job now is BMX, so I get to spend all day every day figuring out how to help people [in the sport].” In his application for the role, Earnest outlined his achievements at Mountain Raiders, which include leading the drive for the construction of the club’s new track. “My pitch for the job was based on my passion for the sport. “We’ve taken Mountain Raiders from a club of between 60-70 kids at a really small track at the back of Pigeon Mountain to now a national level track and more than 200 members. “It is one of the best facilities in New Zealand. “People come here and say, ‘this is what all tracks should be like’. “I’ll take a lot of what I’ve learnt there and what we’ve gone through to help out other clubs.” Earnest will remain based in Auckland, and will commute to

Best in East take on rest QUARTER of a second separated the top three finishers in the intermediate boys’ 1500-metre running race at last month’s Eastern Zone athletics championships. Competitors at the event at Mt Smart Stadium were vying for spots at this week’s Greater Auckland Championships. In the intermediate (14- and 15-yearold) boys’ 1500m, Macleans College’s Theo Quax was second to a Sacred Heart College runner by 0.05 of a second, in 4 minutes 15.24 seconds. With the top two finishers qualifying for Greater Auckland, third-placed Trent Dodds, also of Macleans, narrowly missed out, crossing the line in 4m 15.44s. Also on the track, Howick College’s Nicole Robertson won the senior girls’ 100m and 200m finals. N THE space of a few years, Quentin Fogarty has become one of New Zealand’s top multisport athletes. Fogarty, of Pakuranga, won the men’s 35-39 age group at Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand in Taupo on March 7. The 35-year-old was 16th overall and the third age-group athlete (non-professional) across the line. “It was awesome. I felt like crying, he told the Times. “I didn’t think I had it in me. To be the third age-grouper overall, I couldn’t believe it. Fogarty had the ninth-fastest time in his division over the 3.8kilometre swim, finishing in 54 minutes 53 seconds. He was third quickest in the 180km cycle leg, in 5 hours 2 minutes, to be in second place going into the marathon. He took the lead early on the run, which he completed in 3h 8m, for a total time 9h 11m 55s. “I didn’t think I was going to have the run endurance but I proved myself wrong, he says. “I was thinking, ‘forget about the lead and be smart’. “I was making sure I got my salt in, because I didn’t want to cramp, and taking gels when I should. “I was running scared I guess. The race was Fogarty’s seventh Ironman, after starting his multisport endeavours in 2008 with just a mountain biking back-
ground to call on. To prepare for his first longdistance event, Fogarty entered a swimming race at Mt Maunganui. “I’d never swum [competitively] in the surf before. “I got pushed under and barely got past the breakers. “I panicked. I’d never experienced anything like that before. I had to get pulled out of the water because I was freaking out. He persevered and made his Ironman debut in 2010, finishing in 11h 5m. “I’d only ever planned to do one, he says. “When I crossed the finish line, I’d had such a good time with the training. I thought I might give it another go. “The next year I dropped a whole hour off my time. “From there, I was keen as. In 2011, he placed third in the 30-34 age group at the long-distance triathlon world championships in Las Vegas, which was reduced to a bike-run after the swim was cancelled. “I was rapt and took the confidence I gained from that. “I’ve slowly worked my way up and in the last couple of years have made some gains in cycling. He placed ninth and fourth in

the past two races at Taupo, with this year’s time nearly 10 minutes better than 2014. Behind him this year were three of the male pros, and all of the female pros except winner Meredith Kessler. “Coming into town on the last lap, my coach was screaming, ‘go, go’. I heard over the loud speaker, ‘looks like we have a sprint finish for second and third age-grouper overall’. “I pinned my ears back and started running as hard as I could. “The guy in front saw me coming so he picked it up as well. I couldn’t catch him. From his modest beginnings, multisport has grown into an obsession. He trains up to 22 hours a week, which he fits around his homebased work in IT. “There are a lot of long miles, he says. “Sleep is a luxury, especially in the eight weeks before a race. Fogarty raced the famed Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, last year, placing 85th in 10h 2m, and is returning for another shot in October. “I know what I did wrong. I was nervous on the bike because I didn’t know how I was going to handle the heat. “I’ll push harder this year and see if I can get inside the top 20.
