Housing: The only way is up I

NTENSIFICATION doesn’t have to be a dirty word. By being a design-led city, Auckland can build value into intensification and look and feel like a truly global city, according to Auckland Council’s new chief economist, Chris Parker. The Proposed Unitary Plan, he says, allows for more intensification than the legacy district plans. It gives greater ability for practical reuse of land within existing urban areas and for development beyond the Metropolitan Urban Limit. “But one could have expected higher densities and more height in areas near the city centre, and the market seems to be signalling this demand too,” he says. “This has not been achieved consistently in the proposed plan.” He’s warning SuperCity residents to be aware of the risks involved in not allowing intensification of areas close to the city centre. In his first quarterly newsletter, he says the region’s strong growth is reflected in its housing market, fuelled by a mix of increasing economic

PROUDLY HOWICK! The perfect reminder of everything Howick. 100% cotton teatowel.

Farewell Tom

I HAVE known Tom Kroon and family running the musical business for many years. They have made Howick a legend, brought Howick a musical centre, teaching individuals and classes of different kinds of music. One could always go back and ask for help to understand and progress in their work. Cannot thank them enough, changed my life as well as others. When I passed the shop, I could not believe Tom Kroon is closing down for retirement, felt shattered. Howick has lost something precious, will never be regained, helping artists, teachers with qualification to teaching pupils. What has happened with this electronic computer world setting aside a human touch, than a Robot world. The comic’s years ago said robots will rule the world. Gone is the respect, all I hear today money is most important. Howick has a history, which today is lingering away. Thank you Tom Kroon, I know many would give you a reference. Hope Howick business people give you a special farewell for what you have done to the community. Was once Tom Kroon’s pupil in the past. Hope in future you will achieve your goal. Always a warm friendly smile as one enters the shop, ready to assist you, a warm atmosphere – can say no more. Violet Cox, Howick

WE ARE concerned that Auckland Council has not provided funding in its Long-term Plan for the erosion protection of Eastern Beach, Bucklands Beach, Little Bucklands Beach, Mellons Bay or Howick Beach. These are important and well-used beaches in the eastern suburbs and should not be neglected. The previous Manukau City Council budged $1 million a year to mitigate coastal erosion and this was incorporated into the rates of residents in the eastern suburbs. Since amalgamation with Auckland Council rates have increased but there have been practically no protective measures carried out to address coastal erosion issues. A recent report to the Howick Local Board by Auckland Council confirmed that these beaches needed immediate protection and this is a key priority in the Howick Local Board Plan. Auckland Council has just completed a $28 million beach reconstruction project at Onehunga Bay. Will the council please provide a public explanation as to why it did not include

Bad driving

I DROVE down Reeves Road around 6.50am today and on numerous occasions. It is getting dark lately, so I kept to the speed limit. A white car, on two occasions (over the three weeks) has raced up to my bumper and tried to intimidate me. Yesterday this idiot also cut in front of me in front of a childcare centre in Reeves Road, nearly causing me to collide with him/ her. I only write this letter as I do not want any infants/young children to be hurt. I believe this person may have been late for work and has validated this as a reason to take their stress out on every other driver on the road. If it was once I would ignore it, but now three times this person has acted irrationally. I did not get their number plate, but do have their vehicle type and colour. I will be more vigilant and have my pen and paper ready from tomorrow. It seems that in today’s busy world we forget to remember to take a deep breath and remember to set our alarm ten minutes earlier. And if you are that stressed in your employment, get another job! Come on Howick and Pakuranga, we are better than this. C Phillips, Bucklands Beach

WITH reference to your February 23 edition article “The dynamics of change. Without wishing in any way to demean or diminish the excellent work of the new principal, Yolande Franke, I would be very interested to learn just what; the previous senior staff, the Ministry of Education and even the local press were doing to permit Howick Intermediate School to degenerate to the state where; “For .... years the school’s role was decreasing, “the school ... had no access to WiFi and “Twenty classrooms are not fit for occupation. It seems to me that this once thriving and influential school must have been seriously badly managed by both senior staff and the ministry to arrive in such a state! N W Rider, Cockle Bay

the problem, and everyone blaming each other for the cause. I fear that this latest news at Auckland Council will be a repeat of the Manukau scenario, and once again the long suffering ratepayers will carry the costs, something which is no surprise. Bob Wichman, Botany

Good Samaritan

ENORMOUS computer overruns in costs should be no surprise for the mayor, staff and councillors that immigrated from the former Manukau City Council, as a similar debacle happened there with costs blowing out of all proportion a few years back. The costs went up tens of millions of dollars with no end to the excuses and no one ever solving

ON the eve of Waitangi Day after a very busy and tiresome day I stopped into the Panmure Fresh Vegetable shop at about 6.30pm on Ellerslie Panmure highway. After purchasing my products I quickly realised when returning to my car that I had misplaced my keys somewhere in the shop. I searched all places I could have left them. I then dropped my mobile phone and broke it because of the stress I was under, I felt very alone. In the middle of darkness a friendly face of a young woman appeared to me. After telling her my dilemma she kindly offered to take me home. I told her that my house key was attached to the keys I had just lost; she then said her husband is a helpful man and he will find a solution. We then went to her house and told her husband my dilemma. He then grabbed his toolbox. When we got back to the car park Prashant called the City Locksmith to make another key in order to move my car to my home. During that time that we had been waiting for the locksmith to come I asked him if he should go back home to Pakuranga and he said “no, I will stay to sort the problem. When the locksmith arrived he said he would need the car manual book (that was in my house) and because the house key was also lost I would need to break into my house. Prashant offered me his car and tools and I then broke into my house and got the manual only to find out it was useless to the locksmith. Finally the key was made and the locksmith demanded we go to the Panmure ATM to get the payment, Prashant again graciously offered his car and I retrieved the money. At 11pm after four hours of a series of unfortunate events, Prashant escorted me home. I will like to say that with the kindness of his wife and his unwavering help from truly kind hearted people these events would have felt overwhelmingly awful. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Auckland City Council for having such a kind responsible caring public servant on their team. Sara Maleki (Abridged)

Control migration

WE have a shortage of housing in Auckland but cannot build enough houses to meet the Market. I have been thinking this one through and the obvious answer leaps out to me. I read that 55,000 migrants arrived in New Zealand last year, almost double that of the previews year. The largest percentage have settled in Auckland. So the solution is to control migration until house building catches up. To think that an old man like me can solve a problem that seems to be beyond all the highly paid experts. Oh well that’s progress? Rob Walker, Howick

Nursing flows in the veins By Marianne Kelly

the care of mothers and wee babies. I’ve been a mother three times and we as mothers and nurses can help them. I feel keenly for the young mothers who can be up half the night with young babies. We can help them with support and education. “I’ve loved every facet of nursing. It flows in my blood. Mrs Adams says she must have always wanted to be a nurse. “I can’t remember thinking I would be a nurse because Mum was. But it’s not just a job. It’s something I really want to do. “I want to be like her [Mum], kind and caring. “We’re good friends. We have a lovely friendship and a nursing career together. That’s special. In retirement, Mrs Fergusson has plans to do more hours at Totara Hospice South Auckland, she may develop her garden further “and I want to see a lot of my nine precious grand-children Mrs Fergusson and her husband Kevin met when they were students and celebrated their golden wedding last year. “I feel very fulfilled with nursing. While I have put mothering first, the nursing has been the icing on the cake because it is such a caring profession. Mrs Adams points to the medals the qualified nurses wear which she and her Mum share and have been used in the profession for 20 years. “Even the new graduates are wearing the same medals now, she says. “That’s a tribute to nursing.

VEN as a wee girl, Elise Adams put bandages on her dollies, her proud Mum Christine Fergusson says, which is why she has thoroughly enjoyed working alongside her daughter. Mrs Fergusson retired last week after working as a practice nurse for the past 20 years at the Pakuranga Medical Centre in William Roberts Road. When Mrs Adams joined the practice seven years ago it was the first time they had worked together. “It’s been lovely, Mrs Fergusson says. “Both of us worked parttime so we have been able to spend between 1-3pm each Thursday and Friday together. It’s been like a catch-up at work. Mrs Fergusson has been a nurse since 1961, becoming a school nurse at Edgewater College where her children studied in 1981. In 1995 she joined the then Pakuranga Family Medical Centre which was eventually part of a three-way amalgamation with Plaza and Reeves Road Medical Centres to form the current Pakuranga Medical practice. “It’s been a very fulfilling career, she says. “I would really sell it to people to go into nursing. “But I am gob-smacked at the changes in medical care over the years. We’ve gone from wet wounds to dry and now back to wet. Once we kept them open, now we close them. But a key part of the job these days, she says, is educating people to care for themselves, especially as many elderly people remain in their own homes for longer. “In my mother’s day, she says, “it was more about picking up the pieces. “I have loved being involved in

Aladdin JR ➤➤from page 1 “But to combat those nerves, he says, “it’s important to build strong friendships with other cast members; this builds trust and confidence. Tori Chapmankopot returns to understudy Melody as Princess Jasmine, after shining as Mrs Potts last year in Beauty and the Beast JR<ital>. The love affair between Aladdin and Princess Jasmine is cut short by Jafar, the villainous Vizier, played by Nicholas Cornea, of Somerville Intermediate School, who plots to change the law so Princess Jasmine will have to marry him. To pave the way for his treacherous plan, Razoul, played by Liam Chapman of Clevedon Primary School, arrests Aladdin and takes him to a cave on the outskirts of the city of Agrabah. But that’s where the magic begins as Aladdin finds an old lamp, rubs it and releases a Genie, played by J’adore Harris-Tavita, of St Kentigern College. The cast of eight-12-year-olds are directed by Susanne Dell, the secretary of Harlequin Musical Theatre. She’s supported by musical director, Lynnette Leggett, and choreographer, Sarah Krissansen. Ms Dell says she loves working with the young people “and extracting the natural talents and abilities that are in all of them. Ms Leggett says “the theatre is in our blood and we just love doing it. And, they say, none of it would happen without the support of the set builders, lighting and sound volunteers, costume designers, sewers and make-up artists. ■■Aladdin JR runs at 11am from April 8-12 at the Harlequin Musical Theatre, Pakuranga Road. 20 years marking Easter at sunrise By Marianne Kelly

On Howick’s historic Stockade Hill in 2001, local ministers prepare for the combined churches Easter Sunrise service. From left: Rev. Richard Waugh and Pastor Hung-Yi Pan from ECW, Rev. Phil Coates from Howick Baptist, Rev. Ruth Boswell from Howick South Methodist and Rev. Ron Times file photo Bennett from St Andrews Presbyterian.

GLOBAL tradition of gathering at sunrise to celebrate the resurrection of Christ from the dead will be celebrated in Howick for the 20th year this Easter Sunday. In 1995 Rev Dr Richard Waugh was minister at the Trinity Methodist Church in Pakuranga Road and, with church parishioners, decided to have a sunrise service on Howick’s Stockade Hill, known for the spectacular sunrises experienced at the Anzac Day Dawn Parade. “Joggers and people walking their dogs would come by and join in,” Mr Waugh says. “So we thought we should involve the other churches.” In 1996 the event became an ecumenical service as ministers of most of the district’s other Christian churches joined in, eventually becoming the Howick Christian Leaders Network of Botany, Flat Bush, Howick and Pakuranga. Ever since Mr Waugh, now the senior minister at East City Wesleyan Church, Burswood, has been involved in the service where partici-

pants will celebrate the 20th anniversary on April 5. On Easter Sunday the church celebrates the resurrection of Christ from the dead, he says. “The tradition of gathering at sunrise is a global Christian festival, recognising that at dawn the tomb that

Jesus lay in was empty. The first sunrise service in Howick attracted about 30 people and Mr Waugh says between 75 to 120 people attend these days. He admits they have to be committed to rise for a 6,30am service, compounded by the clocks being turned back for daylight

Poppy appeal in need of more help By Marianne Kelly VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed to man stands for this year’s annual RSA Poppy Day appeal on April 17. RSA president Mike Cole says there are still many gaps to be filled on the collection points throughout the Howick ward. “We are very short of volunteers at the moment,” he says, “particularly people to man the stands. It involves a person for an hour or two on the one day. It’s a big day for the RSA, and the more volunteers we can get

to help us the better.” Poppy coordinator Jan Lawrence does the mammoth job of organising about 500 volunteers, but more are always needed. “We cover 18 areas with stands where volunteers sit and sell the poppies,” she says. “One stand involves four different two-hour slots so we need eight people for one stand on the day. That adds up to more than 100 people alone. Volunteers are assigned to stands at retail centres, including Howick, Pakuranga, Botany, Meadowlands, Kmart Botany, Highland Park, The

Hub East Tamaki, the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal and at Beachlands. Poppies are also currently being distributed to 42 schools and 67 smaller shopping centres. Macleans College students annually canvas the East Tamaki industrial area with poppies. Proceeds from the RSA Poppy Day appeal support veterans, along with ex-service people and their families in need. People who can offer their services on Poppy Day in the Howick ward this year can phone the RSA on 5349702 or send an email to admin@ howickrsa.co.nz.

saving. “Quite a few migrants come along now because they are used to the services in their countries. It’s quite an eclectic cultural group that attends.” The service is a stand-up affair, which Mr Waugh describes as a spe-

cial time of singing, Bible readings, sharing and prayers for the local community. “When we pray for the community we deliberately ask people to turn outwards to the panorama and pray for the people and their needs.” A short message will this year be delivered by Reverend Andrew Coyle, vicar of All Saints Anglican Church, Howick. Everyone is welcome, Mr Waugh says. “Some days we have had fantastic sunrises with people gathering before going on to their own church’s Easter Sunday service. “Our hope when we started was that the idea would turn out to be a good one. The venue is so fabulous when you think of the Anzac Service and other special events. “It’s a place of gathering, of historical significance for the Howick ward. It seems an appropriate place for Easter to be celebrated. ■■ Everyone is welcome to gather at 6.30am on Easter Sunday for the special sunrise service on Stockade Hill, Howick.

Reducing plastic bag use THE one-off use of plastic bags is being targeted by Auckland Council. The council is establishing a working group to minimise the use of the plastic bags in the Auckland region. The group will be made up of interested retailers, consumer groups, industry representatives and communities. In addition, the council will work internally to reduce use of the bags among its departments, and will also build on existing community initiatives.

The environment, climate change and natural heritage committee chair, councillor Wayne Walker, says: “Singleuse plastic bags are a wellknown source of environmental pollution in our region. What we wanted to do was to look at ways to reduce their use in Auckland. “We will now look to retailers and the communities around us to help get this group off the ground and help take even greater care of our precious environment.”

It involved a four-day bike ride through the spectacular Otago scenery, travelling along the sides of the mighty Clutha River for most of the journey. Luckily the tour was organised and everyone made it to the finish.

Time to treat the skin

GIVE your skin a treat after the long hot summer. The sun’s rays are harmful to the skin, especially the face which gets so much exposure. The Matis Vitality Vitamin C facial is ideal to nurture the skin and restore its radiance. It’s high in Vitamin C and Gogi berry which are powerful antioxidants. You will find this relaxing treatment at The Beauty Room upstairs in Rices Mall where other procedures for eyelashes and eyebrows, waxing, massage and manicures are available for that quiet moment of indulgence.

Easter exhibition brings eclectic range C

REATIVE people are getting ready for the Stations of the Cross Easter Art Exhibition opening on Good Friday. It’s the ninth annual Easter exhibition run by the Cession Community Trust. Preparation has been underway for two weeks with workshops run at The Depot, Lloyd Elsmore Park, for artists brushing up on their watercolour techniques and looking for everyday opportunities to up-cycle. Workshop tutors Maree Robinson and Keryn Bloxham have been working with local resident and artist, Jewel Turinsky who has been helping young people explore the medium of mosaics. Exhibition curator DaNae Rey-

nolds says this year’s exhibition, ‘Identify’ will offer a range of artistic pieces from traditional art forms to off-the-wall and creative. “We’re expecting painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed media artists, poets, film makers, to all reflect on the issues of identity that arise out of the universal themes of the Easter story – betrayal, shame, guilt, injustice and, perhaps most importantly, hope. Creative Communities is again supporting the exhibition, including the pre-exhibition workshops designed to encourage and resource artists to participate in the exhibition. An onsite cafe, a successful innovation last year, will provide a place for people to spend time relaxing

and processing the experience of the exhibition. A specific Children’s Stations option will allow parents to participate with their children or leave them in the care of the children’s team. ■■The exhibition will run at The Depot, Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park (behind the netball courts) from 6-10pm on Good Friday night, April 3, and 10am-10pm on Easter Saturday, April 4. It will finish with a ‘meet the artist’ event on Easter Sunday, April 5, from 5pm where a selection of artists will speak to their art. Children’s stations will run until 8pm on Friday and Saturday. Entry is by gold coin donation. More information is online at www.cession.org.nz.

20% of properties go for more than $1m O

ne in five Auckland properties have sold under the hammer for more than $1 million according to the latest auction results from New Zealand’s largest real estate group. A total of 11 million dollar properties sold at auction in the third week in March with another two sold prior achieving million dollar price tags. This, from a total of 55 properties that went under the hammer in Auckland in that week. The million dollar properties were spread throughout the city, with three coming from Howick, one from Mount Albert, two from Epsom, and six on the North Shore. The biggest price tag was achieved on a five bedroom property in the Westlake Girls and Boys school zone on Auckland’s North

Shore. Featuring five bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with a granny flat, the prime location, spacious living and distant sea and lake views helped to push the sale price up to $1,940,000. In the same week, a 7 acre lifestyle block in Puni, complete with a magnificent luxury home, was sold at auction for $1,710,000 by Harcourts Pukekohe. In Howick, a four bedroom brick and weatherboard home with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and three car garaging fetched $1,310,000. Only two, of the fifty five properties that Harcourts reported on, were sold for less than $500,000. One was a three bedroom Papatoetoe home, and the other a three bedroom do-up in Manurewa. Seventy five per cent of the properties were either sold at or prior to

the auction. Harcourts CEO Hayden Duncan says that the auction data now available on the Harcourts website gives vendors and buyers insight into how the market is performing in their area. “A number of our franchises are now making their auction results available to the public. I’d encourage people looking to buy and sell property to check in with these results each week to see how the market is performing in their area, says Duncan. “We hope to extend and enhance this service for our clients soon. By having a good understanding of the current market conditions, vendors and buyers will be able to gain a clearer picture of the true market value of the property they’re looking to buy or sell.

Light in your garden YOUR owers are abundant, your shrubs well pruned, your ower beds spectacular and your rockery inspires jealousy. Why not get even more pleasure, once the evening comes, by casting light on all this beauty? Magical evenings guaranteed. The ďŹ rst step in lighting a home garden involves installing lights of about 1.5 watts per square metre along the paths and in the owerbeds. The light should be strong enough for people to see the way without being dazzled. You can also light up your owers by installing garden lamps and install spotlights

Rudd relishes first V8 ute victory By Daniel Silverton

few of the other guys.” Rudd’s first ever race was in pouring rain at Pukekohe, and has prospered in adverse conditions since. “If you get thrown in the deep end, you learn to swim,” he says. “To date, our best meetings have been in the wet.” From fourth position on the grid at Ruapuna, Rudd outpaced his opponents with lap times at least a second

faster than next best. “It was just a matter of picking someone off every one or two laps,’ he says. “It was about getting on their tails and putting pressure on them.” He passed Peter Ward for the lead on the sixth of eight laps, but with his long-term goal in sight, the nerves struck. “I probably drove about 90 per cent on that last lap. “I thought, ‘don’t stuff it up here, don’t do anything silly’.” He crossed the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of Ward, to finally tick the ‘race win’ box. It feels great but it’s a relief as well. “When I got out of the ute, the excitement levels were pretty high with my support crew around me. “My wife had a little tear and so did my dad.” With two more podium finishes in race two and three, Rudd also notched up his first round win. “I’ve come second in two rounds and been leading races but had never managed to win a race or a round. “It’s a good feeling, something I could get used to.” Rudd is now second in the championship ahead of the third round at Pukekohe next month.

challenge has been getting range of motion back and strength back in my arm, and now is the test as to whether all those months of rehab have worked.” Also in the New Zealand team are Howick Pakuranga’s Blair Tarrant and Hugo Inglis. “We view the Azlan Shah Cup as a very important tournament in terms of our preparation for the World League 3 tournament in June,” says coach Colin Batch. “It was a tough selection process for this team with genuine

competition for places which shows that we have developed even more depth in our squad. The Black Sticks open their Azlan Shah Cup campaign with a tough battle against hosts Malaysia, who are always dangerous in front of their vocal home crowd. FTER three successful seasons in New Zealand V8 ute racing, one thing still eluded Brett Rudd. The Pakuranga driver entered the series in 2012 and quickly made a name for himself as the rookie of the year. In 2013, he was named the most improved driver, and last year he finished second in the championship and the first Kiwi behind runaway leader Kris Walton, of Australia. His ascent through the ranks was based on clean, consistent racing and steadily accumulating points. However, he was yet to experience the joy of a race win. After last season, the owner and chief executive of Pallet Supplies was set to temporarily hang up the helmet to focus on his business. But he realised time away from the race track would only make his goal of taking the chequered flag harder to achieve. “I realised I had the ute and team in place, and I’m pretty much at the top of my game,” he told the Times. “It would be silly to have a couple of years off. If I did that, I would be behind the eight ball again so I decided to box on.”

CHEQUERED FLAG: Brett Rudd, inset, and his Pallet Supplies Holden.

With Walton not competing in NZ this year, the series organisers had Rudd pegged as one of the front runners for the title prior to the first green light. In the opening round at Timaru, with no seat time since the end of last season, Rudd was ninth fastest out of 10 drivers in qualifying and placed sixth overall after the three races. “The first round was a bit rough,”

he says. “We battled with set-up all weekend and really struggled for grip. My driving was rusty and there were a few mistakes.” At round two at Ruapuna earlier this month, Rudd qualified fourth on the first day, then woke up on race morning to news race car drivers usually dread to hear – rain. “I went, ‘yeeha, this is exactly what I wanted’. I knew the rain does faze a

Manchester returns from injury EXPERIENCED goalkeeper Devon Manchester will play his first match in six months after being named in the Black Sticks men’s team to compete at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. The Azlan Shah Cup starts this Sunday and is an important part of the Black Sticks’ preparation for Olympic qualifying at round three of the FIH World League

later this year. Manchester, who plays for Howick Pakuranga, has been sidelined for six months after surgery on a recurring left shoulder injury he suffered almost two years ago. “I first injured my shoulder during a shoot-out in the NHL final two years ago, diving low and to the left with my arm outstretched,” he says.

“I popped the bone out of the shoulder and have kept having issues with it since then. I think I did it again five or six times last year. I really had no decision other than surgery to be able to keep playing. “I am really excited about getting back onto the turf after a long recovery but am a bit apprehensive as well. The main

THIS is the final edition of the Monday Howick and Pakuranga Times, which dates back to 1972. We are putting more emphasis on our Thursday and digital publications. With the deadline of the Monday paper being on Friday, prior to the weekend’s onfield action, the Monday sports section has predominantly featured profile stories of the area’s sportspeople: their successes, disappointments and what makes them tick. Fogged headlights a danger F ogged headlights not only look terrible but there is also a hidden danger in every set that is on the road. The reality is that clouded headlights don’t perform at their best and the impact of this can be serious. Fogged headlights often appear dim to other road users, making the car appear further away than it actually is. The build-up on the casing is the result of UV damage to the plastic creating a cloudy effect which, in turn, disrupts the light pattern. This hinders the light from casting effectively on the road ahead meaning reduced visibility in comparison to fully clear headlights. When it comes to night safety do you really want to take a chance on second-rate performance from your headlights? Luckily Howick Auto Painters & Panelbeaters has a new headlight recovery product available to deal with this and, importantly, the company is an approved Howick area applicator. The Headlight Recovery System enables you: s 4O PASS THE HEADLIGHT TEST FOR A Warrant of Fitness (W.O.F.) s )T ADDS VALUE TO THE RESALE OF YOUR car s )T CAN SAVE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS by not having to buy replacement headlights and tail lights – a brand new set can cost more than $800. s )T IS A PRODUCT IDENTIl CATION SYSTEM s )T HAS A YEAR 56 PRODUCT warranty
