eachlands infant Sydney Junior Tuffin, who was born with a hole in his heart, is a tough little fighter. Due to the pharmacy blunder, Sydney could be left with lasting brain damage which, according to the Herald on Sunday, won’t be picked up on for a few years. A pharmacy misread a prescription and gave him medication 10 times stronger than intended. Now that Sydney has the correct dosage, father Ben Tuffin told the Times his son is improving. Mr Tuffin and Nina Brickland welcomed their son on January 8 to discover he had a hole in his heart. According to the newspaper, a neonatal doctor at Middlemore prescribed 0.5ml a day of furosemide, a diuretic to keep the fluid off his lungs so he could grow strong enough for heart surgery. The new parents picked up Sydney’s prescription from an unnamed pharmacy not linked to the hospital and took their son home. They began administering the medicine once a day through

Sydney’s nasal tube and even had a home nurse visit daily, the newspaper wrote. Despite their efforts, Sydney kept losing weight. After taking him back to the hospital, tests showed Sydney had very low sodium levels and was dehydrated from an overdose of diuretics. Instead of the prescribed 0.5ml, Sydney had been given 5ml – 10 times the prescribed dose. “Because he was on such a high dose, every bit of food or water, it was just sucking all of it out of him,” Tuffin told the Herald on Sunday. The parents were told that because Sydney was severely dehydrated for a fortnight he could have suffered brain damage, but they won’t know for sure for a few years. “Sydney is doing really well, just his surgery to go,” he says. Although they have finally received an apology from the pharmacy, Tuffin admits it doesn’t sound genuine. “It wasn’t hand written and sounded more like her lawyer.” ■ Givealittle.co.nz/cause/help4sydneyandfamily.

1080 scare ‘financially motivated’ By NATALIE BRITTAN The man behind the 1080 infant milk formula contamination scare failed to convince the court his motive was not financial. Justice Geoffrey Venning last week ruled in the High Court at Auckland that Mellons Bay man Jeremy Kerr was under financial pressure when he wrote anonymous threat letters to Fonterra and Federated Farmers in 2014. He owed nearly half a million dollars to creditors.

Justice Venning by samples of infant ruled that the Crown formula contaminated had proved “beyond with 1080. reasonable doubt” that Kerr’s defence Kerr sought to gain lawyer John Billington financially. QC argued that money Despite his was not the “primary “altruistic” intent to driver” for his client’s change Government actions, disputing policy surrounding Crown allegations JEREMY KERR indiscriminate 1080 that Kerr’s motive was use, it was inconsistent “purely financial”. with the content of the letters, Questioned by the Crown, Justice Venning said. Kerr’s accountant Shane Hussey The letters were accompanied maintained that Kerr was in a

“relatively comfortable” even “enviable position” at the time of his offending. The 60-year-old businessman received about $100,000 in royalties a year from Feratox, a ground-deployed poison alternative to 1080. However, he spent more than $300,000 over the course of two years promoting his business, Nature’s Support, which manufactures possum fur products.

he Easter Egg Hunt run annually by the Cession Community Trust is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. A high is the return of Hip Hop the Rappin’ Rabbit to the event which has proved extremely popular since its inception in 2007 at the Depot, Lloyd Elsmore Park. “It’s hard to believe we’ve been going for 10 years,” says event creator Kristen Jones. “Which means Hip Hop is 10 years old as well. “When we started the Easter Egg Hunt we were looking for a fun, affordable event for Howick families to enjoy at Easter. And families have grown up with the Easter Egg Hunt being an annual part of their Easter celebration.” Children are set the challenge of finding six differently coloured eggs, each containing a prize. But it’s the rare golden egg that offers the major prizes that are the real target for the keener hunters. “Right from the begin-

easter fun: With 2000 eggs to find and 12 golden eggs, there’s a lot at stake.

ning we wanted to get the balance right,” Ms Jones says. “There’s the challenge of hunting for the big prizes alongside the need to include children of all ages and abilities. “With 2000 eggs to find, everyone wins a prize. But the 12 golden eggs add that level of challenge that many kids thrive on. The formula has worked now for 10 years.”

Trust manager, Juanita Masuna is passionate about the opportunity for families to play together in safe, fun ways without the usual costs associated. “The Howick community is good at having fun together,” she says. “The Easter Egg Hunt alongside our Halloween Carboot Party and Aotearoa Christmas are providing a rhythm of community celebration.

It’s something we love to contribute alongside the other great events Howick runs, whether it’s the Santa Parade or the Military Tattoo.” Cession Community sees the Egg Hunt as part of a festival of Easter events, Pastor Brett Jones says. “We kick off with this event a week out which is fun for the whole family. Good Friday we’re open-

ing our West of Eden interactive art exhibition and offering a contemplative Good Friday service set amidst the art.” The public, he says, will be able to interact with the art exhibition through Friday evening and Saturday, including a children’s art room with a ‘Meet the Artist’ event on Easter Sunday evening. “We’re hoping to create a ‘festival feeling’ for families and hopefully our golden summer will continue!” Cession Community Trust, he says, is grateful for Lotteries Board funding for the 2016 event. ■■ The Easter Egg Hunt is from 9.45am on March 19 at The Depot, Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park (behind the netball courts). Entry is a suggested $2 koha per child. More information is online at www. cession.org.nz or contact Juanita Masunu email trust@cession.org.nz or phone 021-723-369.

Computer virus hits Times

Window smashed Easy remedies

The Times computer systems were taken down yesterday after a computer virus struck its servers. The virus – released via email – has resulted in the 24 hour delay in printing the companies newspapers. The company have notified police regarding the attack by ‘ransomware’ – a malicious campaign that demands payment in bitcoin to unlock user computers. The Guardian in the UK yesterday reported that a number of major news websites have seen adverts similarly hijacked. The attack, which was targeted at US users, hit websites including the New York Times, the BBC, AOL and the NFL over the weekend. Combined, the targeted sites have traffic in the billions of visitors. The malware was delivered through multiple ad networks.

Local bus company Howick & Eastern Buses is investigating an incident in which a bus window was smashed and reportedly showered and possibly injured a group of school children onboard. A post on social media said: “For those parents that had kids that got injured on the bus from Somerville to Beachlands today you need to ring H&E buses ASAP.” “It continued: “For those not aware the rear window of the bus smashed on top of

children leaving them bleeding and glass everywhere ... other children were trying to help the injured and clean the glass up. My daughter is in shock from what happened.” Sheryll Otway, general manager of Howick & Eastern Buses, confirmed the company is investigating the incident and is talking to its driver. “It was not a back window it was the emergency exit hatch which should not be opened.” Ms Otway said.

The court heard that emails from creditors seeking payment coincided with Kerr’s request to ANZ to increase his mother’s overdraft to $50,000 from October 2014 until January 2015 then revert to $10,000. This never happened. Mr Hussey said while he did not condone Kerr’s actions, he said Kerr had other means of relieving his financial situation,

including borrowing from friends and family, ceasing company spending, getting a job and selling assets. “There were easy remedies … he made choices, not choices I would’ve made.” Mr Hussey said that it is common for New Zealand businesses to be unable to repay their creditors and Kerr had been “juggling”. Kerr will be sentenced next week and could be imprisoned for a maximum of 14 years.

One of Howick’s oldest institutions is embarking on an exciting new beginning as a Life Pharmacy. The former Unichem pharmacy (opposite Uxbridge Road, next to Paper Plus) has unveiled a bright-asa-daisy transformation that is turning the heads of shoppers. New life has been breathed into the store thought to be the first “chemist” in Howick. The pharmacy boasts a lovely wall feature in black gloss, pretty Life rose decals on walls and windows with an open, neat retail layout inside, well-lit with energy efficient LED’s. Although the changes may be dramatic, staff members remain the same, retaining a sense of familiarity and continued care for customers. Naturally, the team is over the moon with the updated interior and signage, and have renewed enthusiasm in their new environment. Owner and pharmacist Leane Steele says the consultation room is one of the highlights of the new store. “We can now discuss more sensitive health matters away from the public eye, giving more privacy and

confidence to the customer to tell us their needs.” Services such as vaccinations, the morning after pill, cholesterol and blood pressure tests, measured and fitted compression stockings can also be conducted in private. “We also offer Medico blister packing for patients who need to keep track of their pills safely and efficiently,” Leane says. Retail-wise, shoppers are sure to enjoy a great range of fine fragrance, cosmetic and skincare including the likes of Jurlique, Snowberry, Moisture Mist, Revlon, Antipodes and Trilogy. “We look forward to delighting Howick shoppers with the touch of indulgence Life Pharmacy is known for,” says Leane. With plenty of opening promotions including gift with purchase offers, there’s a whole new world waiting at Howick’s Life pharmacy. Hedge causes concerns By Marianne Kelly

P

rivate planting on a publicly-owned back berm adjacent to the boundary of a Mission Heights property has raised alarm bells among some residents. Neighbours who did not identify themselves wrote to the Times saying the property owners concerned had infringed on public land. They had planted and extended their landscaping up to the edge of the pedestrian walk, “hijacking the collar strip of land along/ behind the walkway”. “This gives the pedestrian walk no breathing space. It will be worse when the row of newly-planted green plants grow. Besides restricting the walkway, it is an eye sore.” The property owners were not home when the Times called. But their immediate neighbour Krishna Desaraju begged to differ with the residents, saying the planting was looking beautiful and

berm planting: A matter of opinion.

was fine with him as long as it was not obstructing anything. “It’s lovely to see the greenery. They have done a great job, putting a barrier strip around the planting. “But it comes back to the street being free from obstacles.” The Times asked Auckland Transport for its views on the planting. But a spokesman said: “We will not be commenting on this because of privacy issues.” However its website says that private plantings on road reserve have the potential to cause discontent between adjoining landowners who

have different views as to what is appropriate. The look and feel of neighbourhoods can be compromised by plantings that do not fit their environment. “Most private planting is brought to our attention by complaints being made by adjoining landowners.” However, the website provides a clue to AT’s attitude which takes a benevolent view of low-level planting. Current proposals under consideration allow planting in the back berm adjacent to the property boundary. But the plants must be no more than 60cm in height at maturity and encroach no more

than 60 cm into the roading corridor. Plants must have a shallow root mass so that they don’t interfere with utility structures. Fruit trees, vegetables, noxious or invasive species, or any plant which has hard, sharp or pointed leaves or thorns are not allowed. And planting stakes must be less than 60cm in height, not sharp or protruding posing a hazard to road users. The proposed planting must be in keeping with the existing streetscape and amenity values in the area. The landowner must maintain the plantings weed free and in a neat and tidy state; agrichemicals such as herbicides or pesticides must not be used. Also, when the property is sold AT can request that the area is replanted in grass. Anyone wanting to do more extensive planting that does not comply with the rules must apply for a licence which will cost $150.

Countdown will replant Countdown has defended its actions in Beachlands where it is constructing a new supermarket. It has responded to several criticisms on social media about a number of trees being felled at the site. Not all the comments were negative. Many on the website put it down to growth and progress. “Works on the site for our new Beachlands Countdown are progressing well, with earthworks almost complete,” general manager of property, Adrian Walker, told the Times. “With regards to the trees that were removed, this was consented work that was carried out to allow for widening of the road. As part of the new store’s development, we will be undertaking significant replanting in the area and this will include new trees.” The company is looking to have the store completed in the final quarter of this year. “The new store will be a great new offering for the area with a new updated format complete with environmentally friendly fixtures and fittings and a full product range,” Mr Walker said. “The new store is also expected to create around 50 new jobs.”

The young teacher who now has the opportunity to critique and contribute to the educational research that is shaping New Zealand’s educational policy says she has been developing her research over many years. “The ministry saw something in the work I was doing and thought something viable may come of it. They liked the concept of my research and are taking it seriously,” she says. Mrs Bungard finds it meaningful to empower people in the community considering her own involvement with health and also disability organisations. She lost her left leg to bone cancer when she was 11-yearsold. Her own experience has given her a deep insight and empathy when it comes to dealing with a range of people from community groups.

Dog adoption day F

ew know that in an average year, around 40 per cent of dogs impounded by Auckland Council alone are euthanised, many of them because no good home can be found. Botany Town Centre is reaching out to help dog rescue organisation DC Rescue find ‘forever homes’. In partnership with DC Rescue, Botany Town Centre will host its inaugural adoption day on Saturday, March 26 from 9am to 12 noon. The dog adoption day offers a chance for locals to meet and interact with available dogs in a safe environment and to

learn about breeds, safety and what dogs need from their owners. DC Rescue will be joined on the day by dog trainers Canine Citizen, and together they will introduce puppies and older dogs to the public and potential owners. Participants can learn how to help vulnerable dogs through adoption, fostering, donating or simply giving them attention and affection. Dog photographer Kelly Wolfe will be on hand to take photos of potential matches made on the day. Organic homemade dog treat specialists, OnePodgyDog will

have a stall for locals to purchase treats to spoil their dogs. The aim of the adoption drive is to not only help dogs on death row find their forever homes, but to educate the community. DC Rescue founder Cherie Baker says, “The best part about what we do is seeing dogs transform from scared and hungry animals to healthy, happy members of the family. “When a dog we have rescued hops into somebody’s car on their way to their new forever home, and are too excited to even look back to say goodbye, we know we’ve done our job.”

Trademark scam doing rounds Business owners with registered trademarks should be on the lookout for a bogus invoice doing the rounds. It asks for payment to list the trademark on an online database. Jeff Allen of Appliance Outlet contacted the Times after he nearly paid the account thinking it was an extension of the trademark registration. The company’s trademark Imprasio and its Pakuranga address was clearly noted on the invoice which came under the heading of IDRTM International Online Database of Registered

Trade Marks TM Publisher. The $1638 payment was to be sent to TM Publishers, Level 31, Plimmer Towers, 2-6 Gilmer Terrace, Wellington by April 14. “Imprasio is our trademarked name and all our details are easily obtainable,” Mr Allen says. “I’m unsure how illegal this is, but I really think the Police should crack down on this and should be able to as there is a postal address” The Times asked Counties Manukau Police whose spokesperson said the fraud team was not aware of the scam.

Publicity in Australia resulted when a wave of unsolicited letters from the same outfit arrived in the post of businesses who had registered a trademark. The Australian address of the company was listed as TM Publisher, Suite 65, Seabridge House, 377 Kent Street, Sydney, NSW 2000. It was concluded that the scammers hoped business people were so busy that they would pay the invoice without giving too much thought to it. Mr Allen warns other businesses to watch out for the bogus invoice.

State of Grace East is a women only funeral company that prides itself on warmth, compassion and eco-friendly practices. Despite this being a part of life that all of us will need to confront eventually, we find that many people have had little experience of organising a funeral, and little knowledge of the options available these days. As well as options for the venue of the service – we have often used Bell House and the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club as wonderful local alternatives to a church – there are options about having the person at home, about helping dress them, about eco-friendly caskets, and how the service will be held. Finding a way to personalise the service so it truly reflects who they are can lead to a meaningful and special farewell. We are finding that many people choose to prearrange their service. This may be as they wish to be clear about the costs involved, or to decrease the stress for their family at the time, but it can be a really useful thing to do. We are always happy to meet with families at their home or at our cottage to discuss the options and get an idea of what they would like. Recently we did a simple cremation service for a man that we had met nearly 3 years before and we were able

Violinist back on home territory By Marianne Kelly

A

rwen Newband has played the violin since she was a six-year-old at Bucklands Beach Primary School and these days she’s an established music teacher and performer in Britain. On her New Zealand return visit earlier this year she shared her talent with patrons at the opening night of the popular Thursdays@Seven autumn series in Howick. She was back to visit her parents Leslie and Shirley Newband, of Bucklands Beach. The Howick concert, however, was a chance to strike up the chords with former mentor and pianist Peter Watts who, with his wife Katharine, organises the annual Thursdays@Seven concerts. Mr Watts met a young Arwen when she was a student at Howick Intermediate School and she auditioned for the Auckland Secondary Schools Orchestra (now the Auckland Junior High School Training Orchestra). Mr Watts, who was conductor, spotted the talent in the young violinist and Ms Newband did a four-year stint in the orchestra. Mr Watts also conducted the Howick Orchestra, a forerunner to the current Manukau Symphony Orchestra (MSO),

REHEARSING: British-based violinist Arwen Newband was home recently in Howick to do a concert performance with old friend and pianist Peter Watts. Times photo Wayne Martin

and, at the age of 11, Ms Newband became a foundation member. She moved on from Epsom Girls’ Grammar to Auckland University where she graduated with a Dip. Mus. Hons, having played violin on and off with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO). After winning a scholarship she travelled to London where she studied under the famous violinist and teacher Emanuel Hurwitz. While studying, she was a free-lance violinist performing in orchestras such as the City of London Symphonia. Among the concertos she per-

formed were those by Dvorak, Khachaturian, Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. “It wasn’t difficult to get into orchestras then, not like it is now,” she says. “There was more work available. Also the students were mostly West European and English. Now the whole world is competing for a place in the orchestras, from China, Russia, Japan and Korea. Thirty years ago they were not there.” Instead of eventually returning permanently to New Zealand, Ms Newband says she stayed in England because “it was the way things went.”

Purpose designed freehold retirement living

loom Edinburgh is a smart new retirement living development close to Pukekohe town centre. It will be built in two stages with the first 36 one and two bedroom apartments now complete. The development is located at 100-104 Edinburgh Street in central Pukekohe, on the site of what was formerly the Pukekohe Lawn Tennis Club. This high-quality development is surprisingly affordable, with apartments priced from $410,000. At Bloom ownership is by way of a freehold unit title. Your apartment

belongs to you and you receive any profit on any subsequent resale. That’s an advantage for people over 60 looking to retire close to Auckland. A trademark of Bloom developments is a focus on low-maintenance materials. The use of brick cladding is one example of this. Other notable features include double-glazing, level access to largerthan-usual showers, generous doorways and apartment walls that are well insulated and soundproofed. The development has landscaped communal gardens, including an orchard and shared vegetable gardens. These facilities are popular with residents, and help to develop a sense of community and fellowship amongst apartment owners. The convenient location is within easy walking distance of Pukekohe town centre, with its full range of amenities and public transport.

There is the added security offered by the new development, with resident-controlled entry to the complex and to individual apartments. This security is augmented by a requirement that residents must be aged 60+ to live in the complex. Maintenance at Bloom is provided for and managed by their body corporate. The choice of materials used in construction – predominantly steel, concrete and brick – has been made with a view to keeping maintenance requirements to a minimum for many years to come. Inside, the apartments are finished to a high standard, with quality interiors. They have been designed specifically to meet the needs of mature residents, and to enable them to remain in their own homes as they grow older. ABOUT BLOOM LIVING: James and Johanna Klein established Bloom Living in 2008. They wanted to promote the concept of independent retirement living in secure communities for groups of like-minded people. They also wanted residents to remain connected to their local communities.

aige is that creamy sand colour characteristic of long-haired golden retrievers. And typical of this breed, she has a lovely temperament and is delighted to see me. She wastes no time in welcoming me to the Billings home and ignores the owner’s pleas to remove her head from my lap. A happy dog in a happy home. Sitting in the dining room with Kevin Billing, the seascape stretching out toward Pine Harbour is distracting. We’re deceptively high up here in the Mellons Bay home which Kevin and his wife Bronwyn have just put on the market after more than three decades making it what it is.

On the seaward side of Mellons Bay Road and down a right-of-way, it’s a gorgeous property which goes to auction on March 21 – the first time it’s been on the market in 34 years. The estate agents are cagey about the price and acknowledge only that it is a multi-million dollar home. And yet it isn’t ostentatious. It is tastefully decorated, inside and out. And it is generous in size without looking so. Built around the original home, it is billed as one of Howick’s signature properties. There’s no disputing this. The landscaping is really clever and everything has its place. Kevin likes his gardens, so much so Truck & Driver magazine even fea-

tured a piece on him (Kevin runs a very successful truck painting business in Manukau – think Toll, DHL, Mainfreight). He and Bronwyn have even opened up their property for many years for the Trinity & Uxbridge Garden Tours. The first one 15 years ago attracted 2700 people over three days. The couple, whose nowadult children grew up in the house, have taken two years to get the property to this point of readiness (Adam is 32 and Rachel 28). There is nothing more to do says Kevin, now 66, in semiretirement and desperately seeking something smaller for he and his wife and the seven-year-old retriever. “It’s quite an emotional experience,” says Kevin,

who is trying unsuccessfully to keep up with the fallen leaves. “We’re in our retirement years. We’ll be staying in the area.” The couple are fit and active although Kevin’s knees each bear the enormous scars of corrective operations. They have a lawn tennis court (he was club captain at Howick Tennis Club for five years) and swimming pool and petanque court too. They’re sitting on 2600 sq m of land which needs a lot of attention. “We want to chill out. We want a smaller property that’s easy to manage, something with a garden,” he says. Just don’t mention apartments or retirement homes.

It’s a special kind of magic

Help guide Auckland’s direction for 2016/2017

By Marianne Kelly

f you put the young and old together there is magic – that’s what happens, says Topsy Reynolds, activities coordinator at the Ambridge Rose Villa rest home in Pakuranga. She makes this comment as children from Stand Children’s Services (the former Health Camp) in Half Moon Bay circulate among the elderly residents at the rest home after charming them with a short concert in which Te Reo triumphs. The five 12-year-olds from throughout the Super City open their programme with Leonard Cohen’s haunting Hallelujah and He Kakano Ahau which emphasises ‘my language is my strength’. Eat your hearts out All Blacks, I think, when a passionate haka is performed. And the icing on the cake comes when seven-year-old Ngaro Cherrington performs his ‘special item’, a hula. “You are all stars,” Ms Reynolds tells the girls and boys. “Thank you for our cultural experience. It’s been magic.” The children present Ms Reynolds gifts for the residents addressed “to our dear old people – we hope you had fun”. And then the hugging, young hands gripping elderly shoulders, and mixing and mingling begins. Kaumatua Koro Percy, who leads the concert, says what he enjoys most is the young ones mixing with the elderly, “because a lot of the elderly miss their grandchildren”. “We see them [the children] come here and it brings smiles and tears to their eyes,” he says. “Mixing and mingling is a good thing, a healthy process for the children.

Time is running out to have your say on our Annual Budget. We want your feedback on rates, the Interim Transport Levy and local board activities and priorities for 2016/2017. Consultation closes 4pm, Thursday 24 March.

“The children referred to us are very vulnerable. We house them, school them and give that special love and affection that they miss out on at home. “And singing helps our children. Every morning we start the day with a prayer and singing.” Ms Reynolds says music and the children ignite the elderly residents and they get a cultural experience of Polynesian and Maori flavour. Shontaal Wright, Stand transformational teacher says being able to stand up in front of an audience to sing takes great independence and mastery. “We are getting involved in the community and making a positive difference in the lives of others. Our children know how good it feels to be generous and they realise just how much the elderly appreciate what they are doing. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Have your say by 4pm on Thursday 24 March, 2016. For more information or to provide feedback visit shapeauckland.co.nz/annualbudget or your local library, service centre or local board office. KC11423-V3

Fresh vision for Specsavers T

here’s a sight for sore eyes waiting for those who step into the brand new Specsavers Botany store which just launched this week. Only metres away from the original premises on Town Centre Drive, the new space combines the former Bendon Lingerie store and a portion of Kess salon for a bigger, better and brighter experience. Retail dispensing partner Andy Willmott says the new store addresses some of the issues that customers have identified. “We actually outgrew our previous location more than two and a half years ago and the move was in the pipeline for quite some time.” Customer feedback included no dedicated waiting area, a lack of privacy and a limited floor space for shoppers to browse, he says. As a result the $500,000 fit-out has taken on board all these issues boasting a separate

waiting area and eight individual rooms for staff and clinical use. “We’ve doubled our eye testing capacity and have brought in new technology that will enable us to perform eye exams in a specially designed space,” Andy says. “Quite often at the weekends we could be testing up to 40 people and it used to cause a lot of congestion whereas now the floor space has been relieved resulting in an improved customer journey,” Andy says. Another exciting “new toy” is a brand new piece of equipment that will help measure the thickness of the cornea thanks to an instrument called the pachymeter. “It improves the diagnostic and referral process for glaucoma,” Andy says. “In other words unnecessary referrals to a specialist can be avoided saving a lot of time and effort for many people.” Three staff members have been recruited to serve the bigger

Botany outlet and increase its capacity. The team also stands to benefit with dedicated staff and storage space for a more pleasant workplace environment. Known for its cutting edge styles from global names, the Specsavers group has recently brought to the fold the popular Superdry, Love Moschino and Karl Lagerfeld labels which shoppers can look forward to seeing in store. To celebrate the new store opening, Specsavers Botany will be offering half price exams (normally $60) and as always, FREE eye exams for AA members and lucky dip offers for customers who come in to buy new glasses. “We’ll be having some very special one-off deals to reward our loyal customers. So come on in and check out our new look!” Specsavers Botany Town Centre Dr (opp Athlete’s Foot), Botany Town Centre Ph 279-8007 www.specsavers.co.nz/botany

blind date, a gang of young blokes and a flashy American DeSoto car was the introduction to a marriage that has lasted 50 happy years. Colleen and Gary Roberts celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on February 19 surrounded by family and friends, including their son Mark from Australia and Paul from St Louis, USA. They met in 1962 when Mr Roberts was the dedicated driver for a gang of boys when they took a spin on pub crawls around Auckland in the DeSoto. One night they rolled up to the Cornwall Geriatric Hospital in Greenlane to see if any nurses wanted to come out with them. As the driver, however, Mr Roberts missed out on a partner. In order to rectify the situation, one of the nurses invited a fellow nurse, Colleen, along for a night out, which is how Mr Roberts came to meet his future wife. “It was difficult because she already had a boyfriend,” Mr Roberts says. “This was August 1962 and she was not dressed flashily and wore no make-up.” He was temporarily put on the back foot when his tentative attempt to wrap his arm around her shoulder while travelling in the DeSoto was rejected in no uncertain terms. However, as they found they “hit it off” Colleen suggested they go on outings on their own. They were engaged in 1964 and married in 1966. Gary was 25 and Colleen 21. Meanwhile, in 1965, the engaged couple were among the first to buy a brand new section in the burgeoning suburb of Pakuranga. Their house was one of the first built in Ennis Avenue and the cou-

ple remain there today. Until about three years ago Mr Roberts worked in his commercial cleaning, gardening, landscaping and lawn maintenance business, Roberts Cleaning and Gardening Maintenance. His son David has taken over the reins establishing The Fern and Bamboo Company lawn mowing service. Their daughter, now Janine Fitzgerald, also lives in Auckland. The Roberts were founder members of the Pakuranga Christian Fellowship established 45 years ago and Mrs Roberts spent 15 years doing voluntary work at the interchurch service run at the Baptist Church in Pakuranga. Through their church associations, the couple did a 12-month stint in prison ministry. However their hearts presently remain in their aspirations to establish an independent non-profit organisation that would help New Zealand veterans returning from overseas conflicts with ongoing emotional and also physical disorders. They became interested in the cause when, in 2009, they discovered the Our House organisation in the USA of which they are honorary board members.

‘N

i hao’ is how a bunch of children at Pigeon Mountain Primary School greet Chung-Yu. Meet Oliver aka ChungYu, the Mandarin Language Assistant (MLA) currently shuttling between two primary schools. Principal of Owairoa Primary School, Alan McIntyre good-humouredly says that New Zealand’s number one primary school and the number two school in the country, Pigeon Mountain Primary, are hosting the Taiwanese student who is here on a half yearly appointment as an MLA. Organised through the National Taitung University, Taiwan, this is a part of the four year co-operation between Pigeon Mountain Primary and Owairoa Primary. Chung-Yu currently

spends three days at Pigeon Mountain Primary and two days at Owairoa Primary. In the next semester he will swap days at the primary schools. Ian Dickinson, principal of Pigeon Mountain Primary who sportingly takes his senior colleague’s good-hearted banter says it is a standing joke between the two of them as to which school is the number one in New Zealand. “A lot of the population in this area is Taiwanese and the idea behind an MLA is to bring by their presence, the target language, culture and country into the classroom,” he says. “We provide opportunities for the students to interact with a native speaker, stimulating genuine classroom communications.” It’s not only trade with China that the NZ government encourages but also an

educational exchange. “The New Zealand government gives us a grant to have a sister school in China. There is a strong government

initiative and this is different from the Confucius Institute in Auckland that is dedicated to enhancing understanding between China and New Zealand,” he says. While Chung-Yu also assists teachers to improve on their linguistic and cultural knowledge, he says the focus is mainly on fun. “Apart from students learning key phrases in Mandarin, they enjoy art and craft, doing tai chi and playing with Chinese yoyo,” he says. “Amazing” is how he describes the New Zealand style of teaching. “It’s very different from Taiwan and far more relaxed. “How teachers manage students in classrooms is completely different,” he says. “They allow them to think for themselves and give students a lot more freedom.”

Income tax and provisional tax

Accounting For Everything! • Tax Returns • Financial Statements • Business Advice • GST Returns • Rentals

I

ncome tax and provisional tax are the same tax — provisional tax is just a way of pre-paying your annual tax bill. As a small business owner, you’ll pay each tax year’s tax either in one lump sum, or by way of provisional tax in several instalments. If Inland Revenue tells you to pay provisional tax, set money aside — the first instalment may have to be paid soon after you’ve filed your tax return for the previous tax year. Starting out In your first year of trading, you don’t file an income tax return until after the end of the tax year (March 31). This might be up to 11 months after starting out, depending when you started your business. Either way, you should start putting aside money for your tax bill as soon as income starts coming in. This will help ease the cash flow in your second year, when you might need to pay provisional tax for that year as well as the tax for your first year in business. You have to file your return for the year ending March 31 by July 7 — unless you have an extension, or use an accountant or a tax agent (they may get an extended deadline). Once you’ve worked out

If you just don’t pay, you’ll be charged interest and may face a penalty. Claiming expenses Include the total amounts for all your different business expense types in your return — you don’t have to provide the receipts to IR unless requested to do so, but you do need to keep them for at least seven years. Depreciation Depreciation is a way of claiming back some money on the assets you buy for your business. It’s a bit like claiming expenses, but instead of claiming against the total cost of the item, you claim for the amount it depreciates each year — that is, the value lost through wear and tear or becoming out of date. Owing less than $2500 If you have to pay less than $2500 of income tax, you’ll just need to make one payment at the end of the tax year — you don’t need to worry about provisional tax. what you owe, the due date of your first tax bill for the year ending March 31 will be February 7, the following calendar year (or it may be extended to April 7 if you have an accountant or tax agent). Put money for your tax bill in a high-interest account — the interest may be enough to cover expenses such as tax agent fees or your ACC levies. Filing your return Your income tax return is due on July 7 each year, unless you have an extension. If you have an accountant or tax agent, they may also get an extension. ■ If you’re a sole trader, file an Individual income return (IR3). ■ If you’re in a partnership, each partner needs to file an IR3 and your business needs to do a partnership income tax return (IR7). ■ If you’re set up as a company, your business needs to file a companies income tax return (IR4). Take your litter with you On Saturday March 12th, I walked my dog from Highland Park to Lloyd Elsmore and was horrified at the litter discarded on the grass areas along the pathways and mountain bike tracks. Paper I can live with. What upsets me is glass bottles, tins and hard plastics. These objects are not even remotely biodegradable but, much worse than that, they become extremely hazardous when the big council lawn mowing tractors go over them. Attached is a photo of a beer can that met a mower when the big grass areas were mowed. I picked this up between the mountain bike tracks to the side of the main walkways. The drivers often do not see these items as the grass

We are strongly opposed to any suggestion that any racebased organisation should gain control over the water of New Zealand. This includes the sea that surrounds our coast line, the rain that falls from the heavens or the ground water that comes up from below, either as water or geo-thermal. These earthly-based assets were around a few years before race-based organisations wanted to get their

is long - after all, that is why they are there. If they do see them, I don’t imagine they have the time to stop and pick up the discarded can or bottle. They mow straight over the items; in this case, a can. As the photo clearly shows, the can becomes a cutting weapon that can slash dogs’ paws, little feet grubby hands on them. The public environment is the proper place for these assets to be of benefit for all New Zealanders. John Champion Mellons Bay

and sometimes even big feet with the odd adult who likes to wander barefoot through the glass. Result? Trauma, pain, bleeding, stitches and inoculations. Glass items are even worse as the glass fragments are dispersed over a wide swath of grass. And it is all so unnecessary. There are bins everywhere. I pass 7 on my one walk, 8 on another. Come on, people, please just carry the item to one of the bins. Here’s a thought. Carry an old grocery bag with you as I do, along with my poop bags. Put the empty item in the bag and pop that into a bin as you pass. Easy. We are so lucky to live in a beautiful, safe area. Please let’s keep it that way. Michele Burstein which my mother, Margaret Dillimore, thoroughly enjoyed, thanks to the much appreciated kindness and generosity of those lovely New Zealand First ladies and McDonalds. However, mother’s actual 100th birthday was celebrated in her own home with 35 family and friends, masses of beautiful flowers, food, balloons and cards, it was certainly not celebrated “with fries”! Yes, she did receive that card from Winston! Erin Dillimore-Muir

be unpredictable. “I love bringing comedy to a bar and Ted’s [Waters] venue is a great environment, conducive to classy entertainment.” Through his kids’ entertainment company, ClownAround.co.nz he says he has always been into making people laugh. “I have done theatre and film work but the difference with stand-up comedy is that it’s immediate. You get a sense of whether people like you or not.” “It’s become addictive. I want to do it for the rest of my life.” And he is frank about his expectations of his two sons, Jude, 2, and Leonardo, just three months old. “He already knows he has big shoes to fill” – clown pun! ■■ The comedy show is at 7.30pm on April 6 at The Apothocary, Picton Street Howick. Tickets are $25.

COMEDIAN: Dave McCartney at the Apothecary comedy show.

or the past eight years Dave McCartney has been wowing kids with his Bingo the Clown act. Now he’s decided to extend his repertoire to adult stand-up comedy, not that he thinks the adult environment will be a harder forum to tackle. “Children are honest. If you are not funny they’ll walk away from you because they are bored,” he says. “You’ve got to engage 100 per cent with kids. If you’re rubbish, you’re rubbish. Adults will give you pity claps, but kids can be tougher and they like to heckle” – like the little fellow who told him “you’re not a real clown, you’re just a human”. When he was made a finalist in the 2015 Raw Comedy Quest Mr McCartney says he was catapulted into stand-up comedy. He was also nomi-

nated in 2013 by the New Zealand Comedy Guild as the best newcomer. Consequently he has an ambition to bring the best of New Zealand stand-up comedy to Howick. He’s fielding a top line-up of comedians who will do a show at The Apothecary in Picton Street Howick on April 6. Headline act will be Kiwi comedian Ben Hurley of 7 Days fame. Others include Cori Gonzalez-Maceur, of the What we do in the Shadows movie; Justine Smith, who won best female comedian of 2015 by the New Zealand Comedy Guild; Howick’s geriatric rapper, John Carr; and Mr McCartney. He hopes that he can produce a show one every three months, having run a successful one at The Apothecary last December. “I like the idea of comedy. It appeals to me and I want it to

Volumes down but prices still up the supply/ demand balance across most of New Zealand is now favouring sellers, with the implication for strong price growth moving forward.” R e g i o n a l COLLEEN MILNE areas within commuting distance of Auckland are still benefiting from buyers looking for more affordable housing or rental property, says Andrea Rush, QV national spokesperson. “Values are up more than five per cent in the Kaipara, Waikato and Hauraki Districts over the past three months,” she says. QV Homevalue registered valuer James Wilson says while Auckland activity levels remain low compared with the first nine months of 2015, the ‘wait and see’ approach that began late last year appears to be subsiding among investors and many now appear willing to re-enter the market. “Auction campaigns are still producing lower clearance rates than that of mid to late 2015, however post auction negotiations are proving successful in increasing numbers, attendance is also up and clearance rates are rising.” The apartment market, he says, continues to strengthen, in particular modern, recently com-

pleted complexes or ‘off plan’ apartment purchases. “Construction of new townhouses on brownfield sites is becoming increasingly popular as homeowners seek to stay in the same locality. This is achieved through either sub division of a parent site or the demolition of

the existing dwelling on a site. “Proximity to the public transport networks is becoming an increasingly popular variable in a purchase decision.” Harcourts chief executive Chris Kennedy says Auckland Council’s decision to revert to its 2013 version of the Auckland

Unitary Plan, which will provide for just 80,000 new homes by 2040, has not done Auckland any favours. “Close to 300,000 new houses are needed in that time period,” he says. “There will be no easing of prices while there are not enough houses being built.”

Pleasing first-five dilemma F

inding a worthy first-five replacement for All Black great Dan Carter won’t be a problem for the national selectors but determining the best man for the job most certainly will. In normal circumstances it would be the creative Aaron Cruden, but after knee surgery he’s not doing the goal-kicking job for the Chiefs, a role in which diminutive fullback Damian McKenzie is enjoying far greater success. On current form, the best bet would be Lima Sopoaga who reads the game well, distributes nicely, converts his kicks and is the best exponent of the field goal. Super sub Beauden Barrett is also a useful pivot. But when he comes off the bench his lightning acceleration allows him to make the best impact from fullback with the brilliant Ben Smith moving onto the right wing. In contrast, speedy young

Agnew’s Angle McKenzie is also a dangerous running fullback whose best position would be at first-five, a position the clever Cruden occupies for the Chiefs. Which makes one wonder what Sir Gordon Tietjens would give to have either Barrett or McKenzie available for his Rio Olympics Sevens team. That his team could still win the Canadian tournament by beating South Africa 19-14 without the Ioane brothers, Ardie Savea, Joe Webber, Scott Curry and Sonny Bill Williams after their poor showing in the previous tournament was testimony once more for Teitjens’ coaching

prowess. Personally, I’m not convinced Williams has the pace needed for sevens despite the fact he is an extraordinary ball distributer. In beating South Africa, much credit deserves to go to the elusive Gilles Kaka although it was the huge improvement at the breakdown from 33-year-old BJ Forbes, Tim Michelson and Sam Dickson that set the foundation in establishing a huge possession advantage. For sheer Super Rugby excitement, the outstanding 34-15 Highlanders triumph against the Currie Cup champion Lions was hard to top. Unlike most South African teams this Lions side prefers slick passing and penetrative running to the kicking game favoured by the others. Having beaten the Chiefs they were in striking distance when trailing 10-3 at half-time. How-

ever three glorious tries to Ben Smith, Malakai Fekitoa and Matt Faddes after the break sealed victory. Faddes, a replacement for Waisake Naholo, ended up with two touchdowns to justify his selection, the first from a perfect Sopoaga grubber, with the firstfive converting all four and adding a penalty and a dropped goal. Especially pleasing was the improved distribution of centre Fekitoa, so sharp on attack and so bruising on defence. Will o’ the wisp McKenzie scored 28 points from a try, seven conversions and three penalties in the Chiefs 58-24 thrashing of the Southern Kings. Rated by coach Dave Rennie as “a tough little bugger,” McKenzie is an electrifying 80kg excitement machine who brings crowds to their feet in the same way Nehe Milner-Skudder does. Meanwhile the Blues were a

tad unlucky to lose a hard fought battle 23-19 against the Hurricanes. But coach Tana Umaga would have been delighted with his decision to start Charlie Faumuina who had his best game for some years. The tighthead prop had a boomer, scrummaging powerfully, hoeing into the breakdowns and running strongly.

Dedication and passion

This year’s Beachlands Kids Triathlon is hoping to see over 400 east Auckland students take on the event on Tuesday April 12. The 2016 triathlon, supported by the Franklin and Howick Local Boards, will take the participants on a new course through Te Puru Park and Omana Regional Park. Participants will have the chance to track their own success with each competitor being provided with their individual results. Competitors will also receive certificates with their placing and finishing time and winners will be recognised at a prize giving. Year four-eight students can enter as individuals or in teams of two and will race in their gender and year level categories. Because the event is held on a school day, all participants are encouraged to compete in their sports uniforms while on the bike and run course. Competitors will receive a race pack with goodies from local and national companies such as Wilson Consumer Foods and Bunnings Botany, along with spot prizes from local businesses such as Bike Barn Botany who are giving away a bike. ■ Beachlands Kids Triathlon, Tuesday April 12, Te Puru Park Beachlands. J

acob Stroud might just be the next motorbike racing prodigy. The eldest son of one of New Zealand’s greatest riders, Andrew Stroud, claimed his first national superlite title at the New Zealand Superbike Championships. Jacob admits he felt a lot of pressure to win this title and the expectation to be as good as his dad has had an effect on him. “No one put pressure on me, it was the pressure I put on myself. “Being the son of a famous motorbike racer, everyone sort of expects you to do well and I definitely found it quite tricky to deal with that,” he says. Former Howickian Andrew Stroud is described by his son as an “ex-world champion” and in his career won nine New Zealand superbike titles. The 17-year-old, however, is aware how dangerous the sport is having recently witnessed a rider crash in front of him, land on his head and end up in a coma. “I just thought this could

happen to me at any time, I’ve got my whole life ahead of me I could miss out on it all in one moment.” Despite having broken his

collar bone last year after coming off his bike, Jacob says he is still hooked. “I always love the thrill of it and the adrenalin rush you

get, you can’t really get it from anything else,” he says. Jacob, the eldest of 10 children, was the first sibling to join his dad on the track at the age of 13. His dedication and passion for the sport is paying off having set a new lap record last week ahead of drivers more than twice his age. “I was the fastest of that sort of bike to ever go round, which felt real good...because the guy behind me was like 52,” Jacob says. Despite being accepted into first year Law and Communications, Jacob says this year he is focusing on one thing - racing. “This is pretty much all I wanted to do. When I was at school I was drawing motorbike pictures in my tests and stuff ...” The young racer has even been offered to race in Japan and Europe, a dream he is determined to fulfil. “A little kid from Hamilton getting onto the world stage, (that’s) something I’ve always dreamed of doing since I was two or three years old,” he says.
