School run ‘nightmare’ for parents By Natalie Brittan

P

ARENTS are battling chaos as they pick up and drop off their children at schools, locals say. Auckland Transport parking wardens are becoming a regular sight at a number of schools including Owairoa Primary and Howick Primary Schools in Howick, Sunnyhills School, and Mission Heights Primary School in Flat Bush during peak periods before and after school. Drivers who stop in front of a driveway to drop off their children, double park, park on yellow lines and indulge in similar behaviour are slapped with fines of between $40 and $60 from the council-owned transport agency. An Auckland Transport spokesperson says the rules are enforced for the children’s safety. “It’s important that the area of the school gate is kept safe at all times. We enforce at the school gate right across Auckland on a regular basis often at the request of the school or of concerned parents or local residents. Facebook user Alexandra Mason highlighted the presence of the parking wardens at Owairoa Primary School in a post on the East Auckland Grapevine Facebook page early this month, sparking debate about driving behaviour around schools. “I live on Wellington [Street], they do park over your driveway and some of them don’t even care, it is a nightmare, Belinda Knight wrote. Carley McColl commented that she saw a police officer for the first time on Wellington Street since her son started attending the school. She wrote: “I have seen cars reverse out of driveways straight into children with no care more often. More police presence obviously needed! Cara Watson wrote, calling some ticketed offences “ridiculous. “Parked too close to a driveway when you are barely stopping and clear of the driveway just not by the one metre required under the law.

INSIDE

Others asked why people did not use designated drop-off bays causing retired policewoman and Howick Local Board member Adele White to weigh in on the online debate, writing “The P2 zone at Howick is intended for just that – stop, drop and go. But how many times do you go to use it, and find there are unattended cars parked there. A great system – regularly abused! Times photographer Wayne Martin captured other bad driving habits in a video posted on Facebook. He wrote: “This is madness outside Baverstock Oaks School! You have to wonder how some people retain or even gain their licences. Couldn’t get my phone out quick enough to capture the illegal overtaking right outside the school. The children’s safety is at risk here. He says turning right from the other side of the road into school drop-off bays should be made illegal. Baverstock Oaks school principal Mary Wilson says parents are following procedures in the school’s drop-off zone and staff members and student leaders help keep drivers’ etiquette in check. However, she says the illegal overtaking happening beyond the school gate was a police matter. “We’re not traffic officers and police so we can’t stop them doing that [turning right]. But in comparison to other schools without drop-off areas we are keeping our children safe. “The unfortunate thing is 95 per cent of people do follow the rules, it’s just the very few who make it unsafe for everybody. If everybody followed the rules then they would make a safe passage to and from school. Auckland Transport and community police run regular education programmes at schools to target driver behaviour around the school gate. ■■ What do you think? TEEN COMEDIANS: Cast members of Saint Kentigern College’s rendition of Spamalot, from left, Braydon Robinson as King Arthur, Sam Elliot as Patsy and Lili Taylor as the Lady of the Lake. Times photo Wayne Martin

Recreating loved old classic THE humour of a 1970s pop culture icon is being meticulously recreated by a cast of young thespians. Saint Kentigern College is staging the musical comedy Spamalot, adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which itself is a spin on the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Braydon Robinson plays Arthur, who recruits a motley band of Knights: Kurt Hawkins as the strangely flatulent, inept

The final lead role belongs to the big voice of Lili Taylor, who was cast as the Lady of the Lake for her ability to sing in many styles and vocal registers. Head of music, Ross Gerritsen, has compiled a mixed orchestra of students, old collegians and professional musicians to piece together the 230 pages of complex music to support the cast on stage. Spamalot, a ticketed event, plays at St Kents’ Elliot Hall at 7pm until Saturday.

Return of missing bunny A

missing bunny has been reunited with his family two years after disappearing. Noah Page, 11, and sister Ruby, 7, never thought they’d ever see their big bunny Bunbun again after it disappeared from their back yard. The king-sized rabbit – believed to weigh between 2-3 kg – lived free range in the Shelly Park family’s section. Mum Angela McCamish says Bunbun – she doesn’t know the breed – eventually found a way

under the fence onto neighbouring property. “He would always come back to eat and often slept by one of the cats so we didn’t worry too much until one time he never came back, she says. “We didn’t talk about it too much so the kids wouldn’t be reminded and get upset. But the loss seemed insignificant given other more dire issues. “We have had a horrible two years, with the company we used

for our renovation going bankrupt leaving our property unfinished and me being diagnosed with breast cancer last March and undergoing surgery, chemo and radiation, she says. “A few months ago I started my morning walks again and couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw him on the grass verge, near the bush reserve. “I thought I’ll just see if I can pat him and he stayed still so I scooped him up and carried him home.

She says that other than a bit of matted fur on his belly, Bunbun was in excellent condition. “The kids were very excited – my husband, not so much, as we already have a few cats, Angela says. “The extended family have lost a few bunnies going AWOL over the years so we’re hoping they are all living a secret escapee life, And the bunny? “We had him inside for the first few nights. The kids couldn’t believe it. “It truly was a miracle.

Former publican aiding Vanuatu By Farida Master

W

hile stories of mass destruction caused by Cyclone Pam hitting the Pacific archipelago made world headlines, there were also stories of the irrepressible human spirit that surfaced. It was not only charitable organisations that reached out with desperately needed aid to the resilient islanders, but also individuals who packed their bags and caught the first available flight to Vanuatu. One such humanitarian is Kieran Meyer, former owner of the Cock and Bull pub chain, one of which was at Botany Town Centre. The Times contacted Mr Meyer on hearing that the former tavern owner who had built a house in the cycloneravaged Vanuatu had offered his own house as shelter to the many homeless villagers. On his way to Vanuatu the following day, he was trying to gather whatever resources he thought would be useful to the villagers on the geo-

graphically fragmented nation in the middle of the ocean— with no power. “Right now, I’m taking with me solar lighting, solar chargers, head lamps and torches. What we really need is tarpaulins and chainsaws. But unfortunately the airline won’t allow chainsaws. “The wiring is damaged in each of the huts and if they reconnect power it could cause electrocution. They have to be very careful. There are a lot of challenges involved.” Mr Meyer said: “It’s one thing seeing it on the news and quite another when you see the destruction in person. It is harrowing. “The roof has blown off the hospital and all their mattresses are soaking wet. “A lot of water had soaked up the hospital supplies which is always in short supply. “The hospital has very little Panadol, gloves or bandages. Everything is saturated,” he said of the cyclone that killed 24 people and displaced 3300

villagers. A community of subsistence farmers, the island nation has an uncertain future with their homes blown away. “The villagers grow their own crops in the little gardens around their house. But now there is very little clear drinking water or food for survival.” Tourism has always been the mainstay of Vanuatu and now it will take years for them to overcome the setback, he says. Once in Vanuatu, Mr Meyer sent us pictures of the property with trees that had been uprooted with winds gusting at more than 185 miles per hour. “It’s overwhelming,” he said trying to come to grips with the situation. A following email sent from his iPhone read: “A lot of clean up has been carried out. “A friend had a chainsaw and is on his way down the drive to the house.” The day before going to press another email read: Finally got a con-

nection. We are living with no power but we have water and candles and mosquito coils. “It’s funny how you take so many things for granted,” he said. “We gave our housegirl a small rectangular battery powered LED light that can fit into the palm of your hand. “I stopped by hers last night and there she was squatted down with hers and others’ kids playing snap on the dirt floor with the mum and dad and siblings sitting around them – all have a good old time and light supplied by the small light. “The ni-Vans are typically amazing, they just shrug it off and treat the situation as just another set of hard circumstances. “Destroyed schools, medical clinics, roads, jobs, food pits and more. Many of the islands rely on rainwater collection and have lost their tanks and roofs. “But they are generally happy. “Thailand has the tag LOS (land of smiles) Vanuatu definitely owns that tag!”

Heroes in public eye By NATALIE BRITTAN

“It shows that the community is part of the police and the police is part of the community.”

T

HEY don’t often have time to stop and chat, but for one day the people who work to keep our community safe will be interacting with the public. Counties Manukau Police, the Fire Service and St John Ambulance will feature at the third Everyday Heroes event staged at Botany Town Centre this Saturday from 10am-2pm. Supported by Auckland Council and the retail venue, the free annual event attracts thousands each year. A range of displays, demonstrations and entertainment by all three agencies as well as other related community organisations and volunteer groups will be on show. Fire trucks and ambulances will be at the event, along with the Armed Offenders Squad, police maritime unit, customs and many others. Attractions on offer include the Auckland Rescue Helicopter flight simulator, bouncy castles, the police competency test (physical fitness) and Safer Plates initiative run by Community Patrols NZ (CPNZ), which deters the theft of vehicle number plates by implementing specialty safety screws. The Counties Manukau Police serious crash unit and criminal investigation branch will be exhibiting their investigative skills. Police horses and motorbikes will also be present and available for photo opportunities. The Counties Manukau Police Choir will be performing throughout the day and police dogs will be present depending on availability. Counties Manukau Police community engagement manager,

Singapore founding father dies

AUCKLAND Mayor Len Brown has offered his condolences to the people of Singapore on the death of their founding father, Lee Kuan Yew. Lee Kuan Yew was Singapore’s first and longest-serving prime minister and is considered the father of modern Singapore. He led Singapore for 31 years, from 1959 when it first won self-rule, through its declaration as a republic in 1965 until 1990. He retired from cabinet in 2011 at the age of 87 and continued to play a significant role in the leadership of Singapore until his death. Mr Brown says Lee Kuan Yew was widely respected in the international realm of city-building, most notably transforming Singapore into an exemplar for modern urban and economic development. “His legacy includes the adoption of strategic land use, transport and environmental policies and programmes to transform the quality of Singapore’s urban environment in tandem with rapid economic growth,” he says. An international award bearing his name, the Lee Kwan Yew World City Prize, recognises cities for displaying good governance and innovation to bring about social, economic and environmental benefits in an holistic way to their communities; also to facilitate the sharing of sustainable urban development solutions easily replicable in other cities around the world. New Zealand’s links with Singapore are among the longest-established and closest in Asia. The two countries both have open economies and often take similar views internationally and regionally on trade issues. That relationship extends to the city level with Auckland, where close historical education, trading, investment and city-building ties form the foundation of the relationship.

inspector Richard Wilkie says the event allows people to gain insight into the roles of the different services, making them more approachable and accessible. “We want to showcase to the community that all the services work together for their safety, giving them the chance to meet us face to face,” says Mr Wilkie. He says the Maori word kotahitanga meaning “together as one” is one of the principles of the event. “It shows that the community is part of the police and the police is part of the community.” Counties Manukau Police district commander Superintendent John Tims says the police are relishing the opportunity to continue engaging the community in the work they do. “The event allows us to show everyone firsthand all the exciting things that happen behind the scenes, while keeping it engaging and fun. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and ensure they feel safe in Counties Manukau and we hope that the Everyday Heroes event will help us achieve this.“ ■■ Everyday Heroes is held at Botany Town Centre, along Town Centre Drive and in the car park opposite ASB Bank, from 10am-2pm this Saturday. Entry is free to the smokefree and alcohol-free event.

NOSEDIVED: Peter Elliot wants the owner of this radio control air helicopter that nosedived into his front lawn to claim it. Photo Marianne Kelly

Helicopter took lawn nose dive By Marianne Kelly

P

ETER and Merilyn Elliot were having a quiet pre-dinner drink at their Wellington Street, Howick home when Peter exclaimed, “a helicopter has just landed in our garden”. Given that their home is part of a multi-townhouse development it was a relief that the aircraft was not the real thing, but a radio control air helicopter which had nose dived into the lawn. The Elliots live at the Picton Street end of Wellington Street so Peter sur-

mises the craft may have been remotely driven from open spots, such as Stockade Hill or the Fencible Drive car park. “Those things are worth a lot of money,” he says. “Someone has lost control of it and I would like to return it to its owner.” As a result of the nosedive the machine’s front canopy is cracked but is otherwise intact, including its flashing lights. Anyone who lost control of their model helicopter about 5pm last Tuesday can phone Mr Elliot on 535-9210.

College makes impact at Polyfest E

DGEWATER and Howick Colleges were among the SuperCity’s secondary schools performing at the 40th anniversary of the ASB Polyfest. As well as being placed ninth in the Kapa Haka competition Edgewater College’s Nuiean competitors also took out first to third places for group and individual performances. The iconic festival held last week started in 1976 when two sixth form students at Otara’s Hilary College, now Sir Edmund Hilary Collegiate, Boaz Raela and Michael Rollo, challenged three other Auckland schools to a performance competition, a celebration of their different cultures. Four schools attended the inaugural event with the Parent Teacher Association taking responsibility for the food on the day including a hangi and opening the school tuckshop. has grown into the largest Maori and Pacific Island festival in the world, a symbol of the growing diversity of Auckland. Last week’s event involved 64 schools, 214 cultural groups, 10,000 students performing traditional speech, song and dance on six stages. The event’s original purpose was to maintain dance and other traditions among young Polynesian and Maori people. This year’s festival, held at the Manukau Sports Bowl, included Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island, Niuean and Maori performances as well as the Diversity stage featuring other cultures, such as Chinese, Fijian, Indian, Korean and Sri Lankan. Boaz Raela, now deputy principal of Tereora College in the Cook Islands, returned to Auckland for the 40th anniversary of the festival.

Jury retires to consider murder trial verdict By Natalie Brittan

T

HERE is more than one way of proving the murderous intent of the men accused of killing Shalvin Prasad, the Crown has argued in its closing statement at the Auckland High Court this week. Shivneel Shahil Kumar (21) and Bryne Permal (22) went on trial on March 2 charged with the murder of the Dannemora resident on the night of January 30, 2013. The jury yesterday retired to consider its verdict. Mr Prasad’s body was found smouldering the next day in McRobbie Road, Franklin. On the day of his death he withdrew $30,050, his life savings, from

an ASB Bank in Manukau as Kumar looked on. On Monday, Crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins alleged Kumar and Permal either knew Mr Prasad was still alive or thought they were destroying evidence of their involvement in his murder when they doused him with petrol and set him alight. The co-accused were seen at a Papakura Mobil station where Permal bought 15 litres of petrol in two petrol containers, with Mr Prasad nowhere to be seen. By that stage, Mr Perkins alleged Mr Prasad had already been attacked. “The deceased has to be somewhere and a logical place certainly seems to be in the boot of that car.” In his closing statement Mr Per-

The pair’s conversation in Kumar’s car recorded by the police is probably “the best piece of evidence that shows a joint venture,” he said. In that conversation Permal said Kumar should’ve used a different SIM card to text Mr Prasad. Kumar also turned to Permal for ideas when it came to “concocting stories to tell the police”, said Mr Perkins.

The final stage of the apartments to be built at Howick’s premier retirement village – known as the Austin apartments – was recently released for sale. And none too soon as sales to date have been extremely buoyant, according to sales advisor, Chrissie Baker. “They really have been selling like the proverbial hot cakes – more than half of the apartments released have been sold already,” she says. “There are still some lovely northfacing apartments available, but there is such interest in this village they will soon be snapped up. So, if it’s your dream to setttle here, now is the time to contact us.” Scheduled completion date for these apartments is mid-November and there is a showhome for potential owners to view. New owners can stamp their own personality on their chosen apartment by selecting the drapes and carpet they prefer from the village’s quality range. Two and threebedroom options are avilable. In addition to the spacious, openplan layout for dining and entertainment, there are options for an apartment with a patio or garden, or an apartment with a balcony for great views.

Serviced apartments allow you to live in your own apartment while still getting the assistance you need with housekeeping and meals. Chrissie pointed out that the entire development had been designed to accommodate the changing needs of residents. “They have access to the full continuum of care here. “This is particularly important if one partner in a couple requires a

ACLEANS College Drama’s first presentation this year is London’s longest-running comedy, the hilarious The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged). This irreverent fast-paced play romps through all 37 of the Bard’s plays in 97 minutes as three madcap schoolboys in tights weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare’s comedies, histories and tragedies in one wild ride that will leave the audience breathless and helpless with laughter. The cast of three seniors is comprised of Joshua Bruce, playing Batten, Sean Wheeler as Snell and Liam Wylde as

Rutherford. With lightning fast costume changes, each actor plays a myriad of roles as they create mayhem with Shakespeare’s plots. Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare’s bloodiest play, is presented as a cooking show. Othello is a rap and the Histories a game of rugby. ■■The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) plays at 7.30pm from March 30-April 1, at the Colin Prentice Auditorium. Tickets cost $5 and are available from the school accounts or on the door. They are subject to availability.

Family Easter fun T

HE hunt is on for a dozen golden eggs hidden among two thousand coloured ones. The ninth annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Depot, Lloyd Elsmore Park will be run by the Cession Community Trust this Saturday (March 28) The event has grown in popularity since its inception in 2007. The programme includes Easter party food and a special appearance by the Easter Bun(ny) Baker along with the egg hunt. Children are set the challenge of finding six differently coloured eggs, each containing a prize. But it’s the rare gold eggs that offer the major prizes that are the real target for the keen hunters. Event organiser Kristen Jones says it is important to get the balance right. “There’s the challenge of genuinely hunting for the big prizes, alongside the need to include children of all ages and abilities, she says. “With 2000 eggs to find, everyone wins a prize, but the 12 golden eggs add that level of challenge that many kids thrive on. Trust manager, Juanita Masunu

Pastor Brett Jones says the egg hunt kicks off the season a week out. On Good Friday the ‘Identify’ interactive art exhibition and a contemplative Good Friday service set amidst the art will take place. The exhibition is open to the public through Friday evening and Saturday, including a children’s art room designed to be more accessible for the littlies. A ‘meet the artist’ event will wrap up celebrations on Easter Sunday evening. EGG HUNT: Challenge to find the Photo supplied hidden golden eggs.

3-COURSE DINNER FOR ONLY $23.90

Put 300ml of water onto boil. Top and tail the beans and cut into three. Blanch in the boiling water for a minute or two. Drain the beans but keep the hot water. Put the noodles and hot water back in the pot with the lid on to warm the noodles. Set aside. Slice the schnitzel into thin strips. Season well. Heat a little oil in a pan until really hot. Fry the schnitzel in two or three batches, so it won’t stew. Don’t overcook. Reheat the pan before each batch. When just browned remove to a plate and cover. Using the same pan add the curry paste sachet, ½ the coriander, coconut cream and water from the noodles. Put the noodles aside with the lid

on. Boil the curry sauce for a minute or two. Add the other sachet and some Worcestershire sauce, a few shakes at a time until it suits your taste. Then add the capsicum, spring onions, baby corn, bamboo shoots and beans. Season to taste. Once curry returns to the boil add the rest of the coriander and the schnitzel and heat through.

Botany

Divide the noodles into 4 bowls and serve with the curry. ➤ AND MORE: Substitute ďŹ sh sauce for the worcestershire sauce. You can also add a dash of soya sauce. The juice of a lime adds freshness to this curry. You can add worcestershire sauce to any savoury dish that needs that something extra.

New World Botany are proud to sponsor this recipe. All ingredients can be purchased from in store.

Elliot our champion Bok W

HAT cruel irony for South Africa that one of their own born and bred should destroy their hopes of making a World Cup ODI cricket ďŹ nal in Melbourne against the winner of today’s game between Australia and India. Believed to be the last choice in the New Zealand squad, coolheaded veteran Grant Elliott once again proved himself the man for a crisis with a six off the penultimate ball to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in Tuesday’s rain-affected Eden Park classic. The 36-year-old ďŹ rst played for New Zealand in 2008, but was considered by some critics to be fortunate to make this year’s squad ahead of fellow all-rounder Jimmy Neesham. However, it was Elliott’s ability to remain calm under pressure and pace himself that allowed him to score an unbeaten 84 that carried the Black Caps to a pulsating nailbiting victory when chasing 298 in 43 overs. It was a result that broke the hearts of his former countrymen after skipper AB de Villiers and David Miller blasted a 65 not out and 49 runs respectively to set the Black Caps a formidable chase. With Brendon McCullum smashing 59 in typical fashion, his team’s hopes sank when Kane Williamson went cheaply for six and Martin Guptill was run out for 34 before Elliot and Corey Anderson (58) formed a valuable partnership that led to the pulsating win. It has been a great ride by a New Zealand team which McCullum says is enjoying the best days of their lives and giving their fans plenty to cheer about. With McCullum an inspiring leader, the team has responded brilliantly with left-arm swing

bowler Trent Boult the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 21 and Guptill (532) the second highest scoring batsman behind Sri Lankan Sangakkara’s 541. It’s amusing to reect that not so long ago Boult wasn’t considered a white ball bowler and there was concern Guptill’s form and conďŹ dence had deserted him for much of the last two years. However, coach Mike Hesson and his management team have remained faithful to Guptill who followed a century with a magniďŹ cent World Cup record 237 not out in the quarter-ďŹ nal against the West Indies. It is an act of faith which the players have responded splendidly to under the expert coaching of Hesson, Shane Bond and Craig McMillan in remaining true to the attacking philosophy exempliďŹ ed

Agnew’s Angle by the aggressive McCullum. Having beaten Australian with another second to last ball six, this time by Williamson, at Eden Park earlier in the tournament, this New Zealand team is playing with much of the conďŹ dence we normally associate with the Aussies. When some of the stars have failed to deliver, someone else has stepped into their place to demonstrate this is a gutsy and talented side with genuine depth and a true team ethos.

Called in to replace an injured Adam Milne against South Africa, Matt Henry didn’t take a wicket but was the most economical bowler when conceding 40 runs from eight overs. Now the hope is McCullum’s men can win the ďŹ nal in Melbourne against either Australia or India who are much more familiar with the MCG pitch. As such NZ will be underdogs. But having remained unbeaten to date they will go into the game offering respect but fearing no one.

On the way to Oklahoma City HOWICK Softball Club premier women’s player Zoe Tolhopf has been named in the Junior White Sox squad for the under-19 world championships. Tolhopf is one of two catchers in the team, and bats in the lead-off spot for Howick. “Zoe is one of those players who constantly learns, grows and at-out loves the game,â€? says Howick premier women’s coach Travis Owen. “She has a great softball future ahead of her and the

Junior White Sox have landed an excellent teammate to help them push for a world championship. The under-19 world championship is in Oklahoma City in the United States, in August. Tolhopf and fellow Howick teammates Marissa Berkes and Anita Leeuw are also in the New Zealand team competing in the Australian under-23 nationals next month. ZOE TOLHOPF

Who would be a coach? OPINION, by DANIEL SILVERTON

BETTER has stopped at the Blues. Sir John Kirwan was appointed as head coach of the Blues in 2013, and introduced the slogan Better Never Stops, appropriated from Great Britain’s 2012 Olympics campaign. Since then, the franchise has amassed a 13-win, 24-loss record, including ďŹ ve straight defeats to start this season. The lack of success has many calling for Kirwan to step down or be sacked by the club’s management. What has irked more than the results is Kirwan’s refusal to acknowledge the glaring lack of success. “We’re in really good shape, believe it or not,â€? he said, after round three. “It’s about the process and I’ve been very happy with the process this season and for me we’re travelling pretty well.â€? After another loss in round four, he was on the front foot again: “I want to be here for the next ďŹ ve years...I’m the right man for the job.â€? Kirwan’s denial mode is in stark contrast to Wayne Smith’s forthrightness when he was All Blacks head coach in 2001. A miserable Tri-Nations tournament had Smith publicly questioning whether he was the right man for the job. “It is vitally important to me that the person who leads the All Blacks into the next World Cup is considered to be the best coach in the country,â€? Smith said at the time. “I want to continue coaching the All Blacks but I will always put the best interests of the All Blacks ahead of my own desires, and if that means someone else taking over as coach then so be it.â€? Smith’s honesty was viliďŹ ed by the public, which was shocked at some vulnerability where the All Blacks are concerned. It seems a coach who can’t win on the ďŹ eld, also can’t win off of it.

Champion battles through pain By Daniel Silverton

J

EMMA Manchester’s emphatic win at the Oceania mountain biking (MTB) championships has given closure to a traumatic time of her life. In 2012, the Howick College pupil was diagnosed with severe scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that can be crippling if left untreated. Jemma’s condition was deteriorating fast, with her spine curving nearly 80 degrees. She underwent major surgery the following year to insert two metal rods into her back and fuse vertebrae from high in her neck to her lower back. She was the reigning Oceania girls’ under-17 cross-country MTB champion at the time, however, her diagnosis also came with a warning that she may never race at a high level again. But her love of MTB and desire to compete outweighed the doctors’ concerns. Less than 10 months later, she was back on the pedals and placed second in the under-19 girls’ at the national champs and third in Oceania. Neither was good enough for a girl who is used to being top of the podium. “I’ve wanted to win the under-19 Oceania title ever since I started riding,” she told the Times. “Under-19 is the year to make your name.” Last month, she travelled to Toowoomba in Queensland for the 2015 Oceania champs, to attempt to win the prize she had always sought after. “I was very nervous,” she says.

SIBLING SUCCESS: Jemma Manchester on her way to winning the Oceania under-19 girls’ cross-country mountain biking Photos supplied title. Inset, Jessica Manchester is the under-17 girls’ champion.

“I was shaking on the start line. I wanted it really badly. “It was something I was going for, and had a good chance to win, before my operation.” Fuelled by tension and adrenaline, Jemma powered to victory in 1 hour 18 minutes, nearly two minutes in front of fellow Kiwi Shannon Hope. “The race went really well. I won

the start and led from there. “To go and finally and get that goal was really satisfying. I’ve been aiming for that for a long time so it was a really good feeling to get there.” The under-17 and under-19 classes started simultaneously, with Jemma riding alongside her younger sister Jessica for much of the race. With the under-17 event finishing

a lap earlier, Jemma was on hand to see Jessica, 15, cross the line to win the under-17 title for a second consecutive year. “It was really cool,” says Jemma. “I went past and hi-fived her. It gave me the motivation to go on and win as well.” Jessica says: “She yelled out, ‘well done Jess’. I screamed at her to keep

going. We pushed each other and if we didn’t start together we wouldn’t have gone as hard.” The following day, Jemma raced in the final round of the Australian national series, which doubled as a world cup event. In a much tighter race, Jemma won by 14 seconds ahead of Australian Sarah Tucknott. “It was probably one of my hardest races yet,” says Jemma. “(We) were switching places the whole way round. There was a lot of pressure because as soon as one of us made a mistake or went to take a drink, the other would make a move.” The spine condition and surgery continue to have a major impact when she is on the bike, which makes her comeback success even more remarkable. “I still get a lot of pain when I ride now, but it’s nowhere near as bad as before my operation. “It won’t go away. The doctors have said it will always be painful. “I can’t bend the same because the rods put a lot of pressure on my back. I do a lot of core exercises to get my strength up and have painkillers and heat packs to help with it.” She hopes to compete at more international events in Europe later this year, including the world championships, and won’t be letting the pain get in the way. “The worst is over now,” she says. “I have bigger and better things to achieve.” To help with Jemma’s fundraising to race in Europe, go to givealittle. co.nz/cause/jemmamtb.
