omething fishy is going on down at the Half Moon Bay Marina. Local resident Phil Burgess is one of many whose boats are too big for the berths at Half Moon Bay Marina. So it came as a shock when he received a letter at the beginning of March ordering him to remove his boat. In the letter from The Auckland Maritime Foundation, Mr Burgess was given 28 days to remove his boat Carrera from the berth he owns at Half Moon Bay Marina. The letter stated that Mr Burgess’ boat Carrera exceeds the maximum berth length of 12 metres (40 feet) and therefore must either be altered to fit the berth or be moved to a bigger berth at another location. Although Mr Burgess accepted he had to move his boat, his main concern lies with the number of other oversized boats at the marina, many of which are bigger than his own. “Even though we’ve been thrown off our marina berth, the majority of boats down there are all too big for their marina berths and we’re the only ones being targeted,” Mr Burgess said. “Why aren’t all the other boats that are oversized on their berths being kicked off as well?” Half Moon Bay Marina manager Mark Hollier said the marina’s policy on over-length vessels applied to all berth holders. ➤ Turn to Page 3

RSA happy with flag referendum outcome Howick Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) president Ray Sangster says the club is comfortable with the outcome of the controversial flag referendum which saw New Zealanders vote to keep the current flag. “It was an individual choice and people made theirs,” he says. “People in our club had various ideas, with the older guys saying that they fought under the existing flag. But there were other mixed comments as well, in keeping with those around the country.”

The national body was “delighted, but not surprised” at the outcome of the second flag referendum, announced a week ago. More than 2,119,953 people voted, with 1,200,003 (56.6%) people voting to retain the current New Zealand flag. The result shows New Zealanders want to retain the current flag, RSA National President BJ Clark said. “We’re glad so many New Zealanders heeded the RSA’s call and made their voices heard for the second referendum – it was an inspiring, strong show

of democracy in action,” Clark said. “New Zealand service personnel sign up for a number of reasons, but one of the foremost of these is to safeguard the continuing of our way of life. “It’s heartening so many Kiwis have exercised their right to have their say, and keep the flag. The people have spoken.” With the conclusive completion of the two referenda, and numerous public discussions, it was now time for the country to focus on other important issues, Clark said.

“There are some significant lessons to be learned from a thorough examination of this process, but that is not for us to get involved in. “However, we will be watching closely to see what comes out of this.” “With this all done, we can get back to the real business of supporting our current and former service personnel deal with the impact of their service for New Zealand and remembering the service and sacrifices that have been, and continue to be made, by our people,” he said.

While on a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Holly and Ewan took a detour to Guatemala, a place Holly wanted to visit. A proposed cycleway/ walkway is of “deep concern” to waterfront property owners and many other local residents, the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Residents and Ratepayers Association says. Association chairperson Evelyn Brown says the creation of a 2.5m-wide shared pathway “impacts greatly” on the green grass beachfront reserve. “This will reduce the area for recreation access for small boats, canoeing, water board sports, training junior yachting

This is portrayed on local media as a path with pedestrians and not cyclists,” she says. “This considerable amount of space taken from the waterfront, will, in many places, cover road space, consequently about 113 car parks will be removed.” The association maintains “a very large number” of families enjoy the beach over summer, so there is a great impact on their

enjoyment, boat parking and the local businesses at Wharf Road. The issue will be exacerbated with increased demand for vehicle parking with at least 16 new townhouses to be built. “This will cause chaos with lack of street parking,” she says. “A number of cyclists like the idea of a shared cycle way foot path but at 2.5m wide, it is hard to imagine cycling beside push chairs, dogs on leads and pedestrians.” It is agreed by all a footpath is desperately

Ratepayer appeal lost

H

The Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association has recently lost an appeal to the Ombudsman regarding the refusal of Auckland Council to release legal advice they had received on alternative rating options. The association had requested a copy of the legal advice provided to council staff on the ability of council to use stepped differential rating. This has the potential to ease the pressure on high value property owners, who are paying significantly more in rates payments but only receiving the identical services provided to all other property owners. The Ombudsman ruled that legal privilege outweighed the requirement for transparency in decision making, the association says. “We are very disappointed at the decision. It seems at complete variance with the principles of open, transparent and democratically-accountable decision making required by the Local Government Act, and with other statements from the Ombudsman’s Office that there is a right of access to any document which contains policies, rules and guidelines, and that there should be only limited ability to refuse such a request”, said Laurie Slee, the association’s chairman. “As for the suggestion that we can obtain our own legal advice – we, as ratepayers, have already paid for the legal advice, but we are not allowed to see it.”

Police seek teen after Te Puru incident Police have confirmed they are investigating an incident at Te Puru Park in Beachlands in which a young girl was allegedly indecently approached by a teen on Tuesday. A post on Pohutukawa Coast Grapevine read: “This morning (Tuesday) my

7-year-old daughter was playing in Te Puru Park. She was approached in a very indecent way by aprox (sic) a 14 to 15-year-old with black hair riding a blue chopper-type bike. “Please call local police if you know who that might be. This was serious and he

might do it again. He ran away while being chased by me into the Spinnaker Bay area.” Counties Manukau District police communications and media manager Shelley Nahr confirmed police were investigating an incident which occurred

at Te Puru Park at around 9am on Tuesday. There is no description of the offender at this stage, police said. “We encourage anyone who has any information that can assist police to contact us on 261-1300 or visit your local Police Station.”

Boat owner forced to change to another marina ➤➤From page 1

“...the Marina implemented a policy that there were to be no new over-length vessels entering the marina,” he said. “This policy was implemented and has been applied equally to all berth holders, and has been very successful in dramatically reducing the number of overlength vessels,” he said. Mr Hollier said the marina works collaboratively with owners of existing over-sized boats to find a resolution. The letter to Mr Burgess offered him the option to alter the boat to ensure it fits inside the maximum berth length. According to Mr Burgess, however, the offer he made to cut the duckboard off the back of the boat and hinge it was not recognised. “The issue now is we could make that boat fit but they won’t even allow us to do it,” he said. For the last 21 years, Carrera

has been moored at the same berth despite being too big for it. “It (the berth) was sold for that boat and it was too big the day it went in there,” Mr Burgess stated. It is understood the two previous owners of the berth did not run into trouble about Carrera’s size, Mr Burgess told the Times. Although Mr Burgess bought the berth along with Carrera about six years ago, the berth licence was only transferred into his name late last year. After signing all the paperwork, Mr Burgess was required to pay a $1720 licence fee. However according to Mr Hollier, the marina’s policy states: “Upon the sale or transfer of either vessel or marina, no overlength vessel would be allowed to remain. “All affected berth holders, and where known, potential purchasers, were advised by the marina staff of these rules and require-

new location: Phil Burgess with his boat Carrera, now moored at Pine Harbour Marina. Photo supplied

ments, and that the affected oversized vessel could not remain on the berth without being modified.”

Mr Burgess claims he was not warned about this before signing the licence and paying the fee. “They really, at the end of the

day, have entrapped us because when we signed all this paperwork nobody came and saw us or even said to us ‘There’s no point you paying us $1720 to transfer this licence in your name because your boat doesn’t fit’,” he said. “They made us pay, they did the transfer then they kicked us out.” Despite the inconvenience, Mr Burgess moved his boat to a new berth at the Pine Harbour Marina last weekend and has rented out the berth he owns. Mr Burgess says he has approached TVNZ’s Fair Go as well as The Berth Owners Association but has not heard back from either. The Times also contacted The Berth Owners Association and awaits a response. ■■ Do you have an oversized boat at the marina? Have you been asked to move? What do you think? Hall hire fees still questioned By Marianne Kelly

A

decision on community hall hire fees for the 2016/2017 year has been delayed until April or May by the Auckland Council Annual Plan process. However the Howick Local Board has approved a $40,000 payment from its Community Response Fund to make up the difference between the revenue budget target for its four community facilities and the hire fees received from users in the 2015/2016 year. Community facilities portfolio leader Lucy Schwaner says the board may need to provide a similar amount for the 2016/2017 year. Jody Nicolson who chairs the Nixon Park Community Hall Committee went back to the board at its March meeting to raise concerns about the inequality of rents between user groups and said a suggestion of making all renters pay $10 an hour had been made. Ms Schwaner says the board must consider all legacy users as a group, not just the Nixon Park Hall users, “and at this point in time we have not received a formal request to consider any other option”. “The board would also need to seek advice as to whether it was possible to change the legacy hirers onto a new standardised rate. Our decision was to retain the groups’ previously agreed rates with Manukau City Council (MCC). A rate of $10 an hour would be a new rate created for a select group of users and that would contradict our previously made resolution.” She says the inequality exists because of the differing rates groups had agreed upon with MCC. The new standardised rates were created to remove the variance that existed among venues, “but we real-

ised that there were a number of groups who were paying substantially below any published rate, old and new, and so decided to retain their legacy rates to minimise the financial impact on the groups. “We have been working slowly to transition the groups onto the new rates and also to look at other venue options. I personally don’t share Jody’s concerns as the different rates can be managed.” At the February Local Board meeting elected board member Gary Boles said he was confused about why big sports clubs did not have to pay for their council-funded facilities while smaller clubs (mainly seniors) had to pay for the use of the council-owned halls. Ms Schwaner says the arrangements are not an anomaly, “rather it’s just how things have developed over the years”. “Sports clubs are often large and organised and therefore able to access a multitude of funding opportunities in order to develop the club rooms and spaces they enjoy,” she says. For example some own the building, paying for maintenance and services while paying the council a small rental for the ground lease. The halls are wholly-council-owned and used by many groups and are already subsidised by the ratepayer with the balance covered by hire fees. “Both sports clubs and community groups use facilities that are in some way subsidised by the council, whether it’s playing fields or halls,” she says. In her presentation to the board Mrs Nicolson says she hasn’t seen a queue lining up to use the Nixon Park Hall. “An empty hall doesn’t make money and encourages vandalism and graffiti.”

JODY NICOLSON

Some senior groups, she says, closed down because the rent was unaffordable. Ms Schwaner says it was a difficult time for groups when the new fee structure was established and before the issue with legacy fees was resolved. “That resulted in a few groups choosing to find alternative facilities, most notably from Nixon Park Hall. “We encouraged these groups to return at their previous rates but they declined. It was noted at the time that there were other venues available, which were possibly cheaper as well as more suited to the size of the groups. “I know that council officers did their best to work with the groups to find a solution.” The Local Board, she says, is actively encouraging the council to advertise and promote the venues for hire for oneoff events and long-term use which will minimise the subsidy the board needs to provide in the long term. “The community halls are already subsidised by the ratepayer, so the board needs to be aware of the income it receives from the halls and is now getting new regular users.” ■■ The four local community halls are Bucklands and Eastern Beaches War Memorial Hall, Fencible Lounge, Nixon Park Community Hall and Pakuranga Community Hall.

The MSA is a New Zealand-developed programme with the mission of inspiring young people into careers in IT by creating pathways to real life work experiences. The programme begins with Microsoft training high school students to excite them about technology. At the tertiary level, students are offered summer work placements at top New Zealand companies. This experience inspires the entrepreneurial spirit in a number of students’ teams that go on to develop innovative new business ideas for the global Microsoft Imagine Cup competition, now in its tenth year in New Zealand. Over the last year, Microsoft NZ has trained more than 2000 tertiary students, and placed 43

groups with 33 companies, as well as training 350 high school students in two-hour workshops in their schools. The MSA showcase event hosted by radio personalities Fletch and Vaughan – included the announcement of the New Zealand winner of the Imagine Cup competition. Also announced were the winners of the inaugural Imagine Cup Junior competition which inspires high school students across a number of NZ schools to create their own game. Microsoft NZ’s director of developer experience, Nigel Parker, says since the MSA programme began three years ago it has been successful in helping students to augment what they have been learning at university with what is needed to lead with the latest technology trends in the workplace. The Howick Radio Charitable Trust is inviting people to a special event to raise funds for Howick’s local radio station, manned by its “awesome team” of community volunteers. The night of superb entertainment at Chris and Tony Bull’s fabulous Howick venue, The Lounge, features: • Bill Perry, Vladimir Shilov and Patrick Hedder presenting British Architecture, an acoustic jazz and blues music concept and experience. • The Leila McIntyre Band, taking the audience on a soulful journey of jazz, western swing and rhythm and blues. • An auction of specially donated treasure. The unique event and show is being held to generate operating funds for the valued and well-loved local area radio station, broadcasting on 88.1FM and 107.1FM. Funds raised will be invested in important broadcast equipment as the radio volunteers look to improve and expand transmission and operation across the Howick ward. The Trust is grateful for the generosity of the community spirit of Bill Perry, one of the area’s leading musicians, for creating the concept for the event’s entertainment. Also grateful thanks go to Chris and Tony Bull for providing their cool and

Giving back to community A 19-year-old has decided to put partying aside and raise funds for cancer By Rumer-Grace Archer

C

laudia Burke from Botany is going to great heights to raise money for cancer. The former Botany Downs Secondary College student will face her fear of heights by jumping out of a plane in support of the Cancer Society. The Jump for a Cause fundraiser is giving participants the chance to skydive for free if they raise $1000 for the Cancer Society. After setting an initial target of $500 and exceeding it within a couple of weeks, Claudia raised her goal to $1500 which she hopes to reach before a group jump together in early April. So why did Claudia decide to jump out of a plane in the name of cancer? “I don’t know, I’m actually quite scared of heights but when I think about it I’m raising money for a good cause and then facing one of my fears for a good cause as well,” she says. Cancer has affected Claudia and her family closely before and, she says, affects many people she knows. “My mum’s best friend had breast cancer; she was one cell away from being terminal. So it affected my mum quite a lot having to be there for her best friend and it impacted on me because I’m the oldest child so when mum was away with her I had to try look after my siblings when I was only 16 or 17. Claudia also lost her grandfather to cancer only a year ago as well as her great aunt. “So cancer has been a big part of my life...I’ve got friends who have

lost family members to cancer and it’s kind of something that affects everybody,” she says. “I don’t think I’ve met one person who hasn’t known someone or been affected by someone with cancer so the more money that the Cancer Society has to work with to support families, whether it’s to cure them or not it, can still make a change.” Giving back to the community is an important part of this 19-yearold’s life who dreams of being a paramedic in the future. “It’s nice to be able to help people when they need it,” she says. “Sometimes I’d rather be making people happy than being rich myself” Even though she’s still young, Claudia says she has decided to “put partying aside and do something better for the community.” “Every dollar counts at the end of the day.” ■■ To make a donation towards Claudia’s skydive go to https:// jumpforacause.everydayhero. com/nz/hope-on-the-move.

Zonta volunteers’ service honoured Two of the Zonta Club of East Auckland’s nominees have received an award to mark the Zonta Club of Auckland’s 50th anniversary. Lynne Anderson has been active in a voluntary capacity in Howick and Pakuranga for about 40 years. Known for her passion for singing and music, she has lead choirs and singing groups, and assisted school students in kapa haka and choirs. She has held many fund-raising events involving her singing, having trained as a singer with the legendary teacher Sister Mary Leo. Ms Anderson has been active in the Girl Guide movement for 40 years with a significant period of that time devoted to training guide leaders. She has also been a fierce advocate for young children in her role as an Early Childhood Educator at the Faculty of

Education, University of Auckland. Gretl Bass has been honoured for her love of sewing and desire to serve which has led her to form and lead groups of women who make children’s clothing. They also make teddies for St John’s Ambulance teams who give them to young children travelling in ambulances. Her leadership has provided other women with an opportunity to serve their community. The Zonta Club of Auckland was the first in New Zealand to be established and since November 1965 the organisation in New Zealand has grown. Today 28 clubs operate between Whangarei and Dunedin, all working to empower women locally, nationally and internationally through service and advocacy.

Warp speed test L

ocal student Sarina Wang has headed to Europe with a 10-strong New Zealand team for the World Sport Stacking Championships in Germany. The team – the NZ Black Stacks – will compete against the fastest stackers in the world in Speichersdorf from April 1-3. Wang , 12, from Bucklands Beach, is a student at St Kentigern College. She plays soccer, studies ballet and jazz and is adept at playing the piano and guitar. She represented NZ at the World Sports Stackers Championship in Korea and Canada in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

More than 250 of the world’s fastest sport stackers will travel to Speichersdorf, Germany for the 2016 World Sport Stacking Championships. The world’s best stackers from 22 countries will compete in up to eight individual, doubles and relay events, including the Speed Stacks International Challenge and head-to-head relay competition to determine the fastest country in the world. “Sport stacking in Germany has grown steadily for the past 12 years” said Larry Goers, WSSA Executive Director. “Speichersdorf Germany was selected for the 2016 World Championships because of

its strong sport stacking community and Germany’s overall appeal as a tourist destination. “We’re excited to travel to Speichersdorf for this great world class sport stacking competition.”

What is sport stacking?

Sport stacking has been termed a “track meet for your hands at warp speed.” It is an exciting individual and team sport where participants up stack and down stack 12 specially designed high-tech cups in pre-determined sequences with lightning quickness. Stackers compete for time in several events and in relay teams.

Better outcomes for family cases By Farida Master

T

here is a definite acculturation problem – the process of adopting the cultural traits or social patterns of another group - with migrant populations that leads to disturbing statistics of family violence increasing amongst Indian and South Asian communities in east and south Auckland. After observing that the high incidence of physical violence and abduction committed by Indian men being disproportionate compared to their population in the area, Counties Manukau South Asian Police advisory board member, Ranjna Patel decided to work on a unique programme. With the help of Sahaayta Counselling, the idea of an early intervention safe house was proposed in an attempt to prevent future offending and abuse. The difference was that the safe house was for men involved in family violence. Gandhi Nivas, an accommodation in Otahuhu for men involved in family violence, was inaugurated in December 2014. The safe house has a team of social workers, support workers and counsellors, working on a voluntary basis.

A year later, there is a emerging trend of reduced offending. It was anticipated that Gandhi Nivas would be used mainly by Indian and Fijian men, yet one third of users have been Maori and Pasifika and the remainder, ‘other Asian’, Middle Eastern and European men. A study of the programme by Massey University’s School of Psychology has found a 43.75 per cent drop in the number of men offending after intervention, and a 57.6 per cent decrease in the frequency of offending, after intervention. The programme provides emergency housing, counselling and referral to social services for men who have either been issued with a Police Safety Order or are otherwise involved in police matters related to family violence. Massey University senior researchers, Mandy Morgan and Leigh Coombes, believe the one-year findings support the effectiveness of the innovative programme. They believe the rapid response to referrals from Counties Manukau Police, the service’s high standard of community leadership, and its culturally appropriate services, have made a difference. Gandhi Nivas board chair Ms Patel says: “For victims, it

Right care, right time G

provides a measure of safety by allowing them to stay in their own homes without having to be with the offender or wouldbe offender; for perpetrators, it provides them the immediate help they need not to offend, and to get critical counselling.” However, researchers add that more work needs to be done to confirm the downward trend on offending. “We propose a follow up study later this year when a dataset for more than 100 Gandhi Nivas clients ... can be provided,” they say. A 55-year-old Fijian Indian man who used the service in 2015 says that when he first approached them, he was alone and depressed. “But they treated me with respect and went out of their way to help me. They were always kind and gave me a lot of encouragement. I was also provided with a counsellor, who was most helpful.” Another 22-year-old Indian man says that his stay at Gandhi Nivas helped him clear his head.“It gave me place to think things through. The counselling service made me realise where I was going wrong and helped me not to make the same mistake again,” he said. Ninety per cent of men referred to Gandhi Nivas had intervention within 24 hours.

uilt is a common issue for families when they need to have an older person cared for in a rest home. Juggling employment with caring for parents, children and grandchildren can push people to exhaustion and sometimes the older person may not receive the care they need. Ambridge Rose Villa Rest Home facility manager, Jasveen Kaur says district health board assessors work with families every day and there are many things that will help with the transition into care. “We need to understand the individual as they have been throughout their life, rather than how they are when they may have developed dementia or other health concerns that require 24/7 care,” says Mrs Kaur. “If families can share with us information, photographs and stories about their loved one it helps us build a relationship with them.” A memory book is a great way for family and friends to stay connected with a person in a rest home. It helps to write a little note about their visit, include photos from the good old days and share little keepsakes. Staying in touch with rest home caregivers gives families information about an older person’s emotional day, like going on a trip somewhere or doing an activity – not just the clinical information. The needs of the older person should come first, which may mean they live in a rest home that is close

to their friends, clubs and familiar surroundings. “If mum enjoys hopping on the bus to visit the local shops, it could be a difficult transition to go to a rural rest home.” If an older person is strongly resistant to going into care the family needs to respect their rights. However, it’s important to regularly revisit the situation to see how they are coping with possible changes in health and general well-being. Call the Ambridge Rose Healthcare team now to discuss possible transition to care for your loved one. It was her love for ■ Ugie Moodley aesthetics that led Ugie Moodley to put a permanent smile on people’s faces. You know you are in great hands as you hear Ms Moodley talk passionately about state- ofthe-art technology she uses to create a smile, from prostheses the size of a little finger to that replacing all the teeth. “It is a blessing to be privy to all the new technology as it updates. “Each course attended allows us to actually work with new materials and techniques which makes being a Dental Technician at this

With over 20 years of creating dentures it is no wonder Ugie has clients locally and around the world that sing her praises.

One of them is Mae Salvador who says: “For me a smile is the prettiest thing a lady can wear. But I didn’t always feel that way. I had my previous set of dentures made overseas and I was embarrassed to smile. ■ Mae Salvador It was an awful feeling as they didn’t even work properly. When I returned to NZ, I was referred to Ugie at Niche Dental by my sister-in-law and I can now smile confidently. In fact I feel like smiling all the time. Pro tips:

• If the corners of your mouth are red and irritated and you find saliva leaking from them, you may have a condition called Angular Cheilitis. This can be treated with a tropical antifungal ointment but if the condition reappears it may be caused by the reduced vertical dimension of your dentures. • Your dentures need to be checked on a regular basis, once or twice every two years. It is like WOF for your car only your dentures become a part of you and have to function far greater feats than your car.

TEN GREAT REASONS TO

REASON 2. Local independent shops support community groups Local busineses are proportionately more generous in their support of local charities, schools and community events. Supporting local shops means a financial impact on your community.

Whilst visiting the North recently, we stayed at Kerikeri. We went by car/ferry to Russell, in the Bay of Islands. Once ashore we stopped at the site of the first capital of New Zealand, before going on to the township. Next to where we parked there was a small epitaph commemorating the fallen from successive wars. I read the inscription, ‘Lest we forget,’ with sadness, remembering the kerfuffle over our flag, instigated by our Prime Minister. We did not have time to visit Marsden Cross, although not too far away, where Samuel Marsden preached his inspirational message to the Maori people (‘Te Harinui’ - glad tidings of great joy). There came, some time later, the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (the famous historical site some 15 minutes south) bringing peace between the Maori and Pakeha people of NZ. The major motivational influence for this signing was the new-found Christian faith of many of the chiefs who signed. The Waimate North Mission House, some 10 minutes from Kerikeri, was the place where, it is said, the first Christian, Maori-Pakeha wedding in New Zealand, under European law, took

place. New Zealand, when I was a child, was called ‘God’s own country’. This was shortened over time to Godzone and then largely forgotten. We were given the inspirational anthem God Defend New Zealand. Those who do not forget, sing it as a fervent prayer. The rest treat it as a dirge except for when our flag is raised in honour of a medal winner at the games or something similar. Now it is Easter, when we remember the One who died for all humanity. God does not forget. He gave His only begotten son Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for our sins so that all who sincerely believe can be reconciled to God - forgiven - and receive the sure and certain hope of eternal life to come. Can we remember that and not simply the buns, the bunnies and the chocolate eggs? Harvey Rosieur Howick

I love my country

The so called ‘flag debate’ is already yesterday’s news. For the majority of New Zealanders there was no debate, ever. Despite the propaganda and despite the wasted public money poured into this campaign to create a ‘brand’, heartland New Zealanders voted with their hearts and I thank them for it.

I love my country and what we as New Zealanders have represented in the past and hopefully will carry into the future. It is not about a piece of cloth that waves in the wind. It is about our history and traditions and the foundations laid by our forefathers. It is about the Treaty signed under the reign of Queen Victoria which binds our unique New Zealand character and it is about the honouring of the men and women who fought and died on our behalf. Branding is all about image, skin deep stuff which I happily leave to the corporates. New Zealand is not John Key’s personal corporate for him and his cohorts to ‘play around with’. Long may New Zealanders keep their independent spirit, their sense of fairness, their common sense to know that what we have is unique and worth preserving and that our beautiful blue flag featuring the Southern Cross is one small but important part of this. Australia’s cousins across the Tasman have wisely rejected the petty proposal of the New Zealand government, and will retain their excellent banner. The Kiwis not only served under that glorious flag in war and peace, but thousands made their final journey under those colours. This year’s Anzac Day celebrations will again be graced by the historic banners under which our respective troops gave service. David D’Lima Sturt, South Australia

Rural practice attracts loyal local customers R

ick Parfitt had never heard of Whitford when he returned from his European OE 10 years ago. However, the well-established Whitford Dental Group was on the market and was just the practice the dentist who qualified at Otago University was looking for. “I originally came from Waitakaruru and after spending six years in the UK I came back and looked for a practice,” he says. “I knew I wanted one in Auckland somewhere. When I came to look it looked like a nice area. But I didn’t know anything about Whitford.” However, he and his sevenstrong team have continued to build a vital presence in the area since Rick took over the practice in 2006. So much so that former residents from throughout the North Island and as far away as Christchurch and Australia time their visits back to fit in with a dental appointment. “They wait until they come back here to have a check up. It’s good when people say they particularly want to see us,” Rick says. In an age of digital technology, Rick is especially proud of the state-of-the art technology the practice has installed. The most recent innovation is a machine that performs ‘Cerec’ restorations allowing

the practice to mill crowns and Inlays on-site. Even better for the patients, the normally long-winded process can be wrapped up in just one visit to the dentist – one episode of local anaesthesia and no bother with time-consuming messy temporary crowns. The restorations are made from a solid block of tooth coloured ceramic that matches surrounding teeth. Rick says the technology provides a costeffective alternative to older style crowns and Inlays. “We’ve had our original machine for about 10 years. But this one is much quicker. It’s top-of-the-line. We can email images to the laboratories and restore implants with it.” Assisting Rick is dentist David Cain; dental hygienist Shelley Chadwick; dental assistants

Julia Brown, Kristy Dillon, and Layla Ukaidey; receptionist Delwyn Powell; and part-time receptionist Julie Dunning. Rick says with a rural practice there is more consistency than in town where people will shop around. “We see in our records that the patients here have been with us for years. You get to see your work and how it lasts. And we can also develop relationships with people.” Similarly Rick says the team enjoys working with Times representatives who make frequent visits. The practice has been an advertiser for more than 10 years. “It gets our name out there,” Rick says. ”We’ve got a website but I like putting ads in the newspaper. I think people still like reading a newspaper.” The Whitford village location, complete with itinerant chooks out the back, is “a nice place to work”, Rick says. But he hasn’t succumbed to the semi-rural lifestyle, instead living with his young family in Mt Eden. “I love living in the city and it takes only 25 minutes to get to Whitford, driving against the traffic.” And no, he is not tempted to take up the temptation of bucolic bliss. “I was brought up on a Waitakaruru farm. I’ve been there and done that.”

NEWSPRINT END ROLLS

Despite this being a part of life that all of us will need to confront eventually, we find that many people have had little experience of organising a funeral, and little knowledge of the options available these days. As well as options for the venue of the service – we have often used Bell House and the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club as wonderful local alternatives to a church – there are options about having the person at home, about helping dress them, about eco-friendly caskets, and how the service will be held. Finding a way to personalise the service so it truly reflects who they are can lead to a meaningful and special farewell. We are finding that many people choose to prearrange their service. This may be as they wish to be clear about the costs involved, or to decrease the stress for their family at the time, but it can be a really useful thing to do. We are always happy to meet with families at their home or at our cottage to discuss the options and get an idea of what they would like. Recently we did a simple cremation service for a man that we had met nearly 3 years before and we were able to meet his wishes com-

pletely. It was lovely for his family to know we had met before, that we remembered him, and that we knew exactly what he wished us to do. This has also been a good idea for families where an elderly person may be in residential care with children who live overseas or in other parts of New Zealand. We can formulate a plan of care that will be followed out at the time of death, and the children can be reassured about what will happen, and the cost. It leads to peace of mind on many levels. When someone dies, the days following are often tiring and stressful, so having some of the important decisions made, can be a huge relief. Giant pumpkins show garden skills

Thinking about your children’s education?

B

udding young pumpkin grower Hazel McGhie has won the Mitre 10 MEGA Botany Easy As Kids BIG Pumpkin Contest with her pumpkin tipping the scales at 73kg at the weigh-in on Sunday, March 20. Young gardeners across the country have been busy putting their green fingers to work since the competition opened in October last year, planting, watering and treating their creations. Around 52 stores participated in the weigh-in, and there were 646 entrants nationwide. Mitre 10’s general manager Marketing Dave Elliott was delighted to see so many kids across the country get involved. “Yet again, we’re blown away by what our entrants have been able to produce,” Mr Elliott said. “It’s great to see so many youngsters get stuck in and test the limits of their gardening skills.” At the weigh-in there were prizes for the biggest at each store, as well as awards for ugliest and best-dressed. Winners were presented with a range of prizes, including Prezzy cards and medals.

Abuse of the elderly Many organisations and groups in the Manukau community provide help and support for those concerned about an elderly family member, friend or neighbour. Often people believe the elderly are not being treated with the care and consideration they deserve. If you feel you may require help and advice do not just accept the situation. The forms of elder abuse are many and varied covering psychological harm such as ridicule, harassment, financial, physical abuse, neglect and sexual abuse – generally anything that degrades or disrespects a person. much taller, bigger and “heaps younger than me”. “It’s like putting a rookie (but ageing) bantam-weight in the ring with a heavy-weight champion. “While it’s not a major scene, it has to look realistic and I have to give the impression I’m capable of taking him on.” Ms Watkin says she has particularly enjoyed proving that turning 60, considered by many to be ‘elderly’, doesn’t mean sitting in a rocking chair and waiting for death.” Mr Leilua says he is used to putting on plays quickly, having directed 17 comedy plays for Auckland Council’s school holiday programmes, adapting them based on the actors staging a production in five days. He’s allowed for only 25 hours of rehearsal for the hour-long By The Way It’s My Birthday. “I looked at working on this play as similar to working on a show from the golden age of

television comedy of which I am a fan,” he says. “A show would be produced in a very short space of time, such as The Honeymooners, The Phil Silvers Show and shows with Sid Caesar, Dick Van Dyke and Lucille Ball. “So this is something like an episode of I Love Lucy with several different twists, some a bit surreal, some musical.” Along with Ms Watkin, the cast, hand-picked from HLT and the Dolphin Theatre, includes Kate Tennent, Matthew Diesch, Kieran Maskell, Carleen Craig, Reeva Chapman and Doug Johnston. The evening performance of By The Way It’s My Birthday is sold out. Ms Watkin’s brother is coming from London, other family and friends are coming from Japan, Australia and from throughout New Zealand. ■■ A public matinee will be at 2pm on April 2 at the Howick Little Theatre, Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga. Entry is $5.

For a club so young and unique, they set high standards. Auckland’s only multilingual club, the Rotary Club of Auckland South hosted a fun-filled Cultural and Charity night at Te Tuhi Arts Centre recently. Packed with the who’s who of the Rotary and Asian communities including ChungHsing Chou, director-general of Taipei Economic Cultural Office in NZ and Teri Yu-Hsia Cheng, chair person of the Global Federation of Chinese Business Women in NZ, the guests were treated to yummy Chinese fare and bubble tea. The tables were named after Chinese zodiac signs and had stuffed toy centre pieces with monkeys, pigs, roosters and dragons sitting on them. A string of graceful dancers in traditional costumes set the tone for an eclectic cultural mix that included Chinese folk dances along with ballroom dancing and high energy Pacific drums and

dance. The proceeds of the evening went to Cure Kids. Rotarian, Prof Bob Elliot spoke about Cure Kids being established by Rotary in 1975 as the Child Health Research Foundation. “So far we have invested more than $37 million in research,” he said. Blending the yin and yang was John Kiria, manager of Anuanua, the talented performing arts troupe. “Time is of no essence in Cook Islands,” he said light-heartedly. You control time instead of time controlling you. And the more you drink, the better you dance!” The pulsating, foot-tapping performance had a lot of guests join in to shake their booty to the beat of mystical music. The entertaining evening with wine, food and song, ended with Teri Yang, president of the Rotary Club of Auckland South and Diamond Chen, Club Foundation chair being award the Paul Harris fellowship.

ocelyn Watkin does something outrageous for her birthday each year and when she enters a new decade she attempts something even more special than usual. This year it’s her debut performance in a specially adapted play with all proceeds going to the Howick Little Theatre (HLT). The play, however, is not Ms Watkin’s most ambitious endeavour. In 1998 she was the leader of a year-long expedition to drive around the world in two classic Land Rovers for Land Rover’s 50th anniversary. She says she succeeded in her goals to return home alive, on time and on budget. Vic Leilua who is directing the HLT play, By The Way It’s My Birthday says he thought the performance would be a great fund-raiser for the theatre and a creative challenge to put together. “Jocelyn wanted to perform in a comedy play and asked me,” he says. “It’s great that she has taken up the challenge and I have not given her an easy part either.” Ms Watkin says the last time she was front of the stage was at high school “and that was in the back line of the chorus”. “I have had to learn to tap dance. “This is something I never did as a kid, so my brain and muscles have no memories to build on. “I’ve spent most of the summer swimming, cycling, walking, and doing tai chi to help build my fitness. I’ve dropped a whole dress size.” In addition, there’s a fight scene/tussle with a man who is

hile the Super City’s apartment market is growing at a pace, a recent survey shows the aspiration for a stand-alone house is still strong. The survey commissioned by real estate company, Barfoot & Thompson has found that 70 per cent of home hopefuls are aiming for their own slice of paradise, while only nine per cent are considering buying an apartment. However, the youngest of those surveyed, aged between 18 and 19 years, were more than twice as likely to choose an apartment (22 per cent) as their first property. The company’s managing director Peter Thompson says the Auckland apartment market is growing with considerable pace. While some are being purchased by first-home buyers, there are equally as many luxury downsizers and property investors. Becoming a landlord was a more likely option for those looking to buy in the next couple of years - 15 per cent compared with six per cent looking to purchase in three or more years. For many, home ownership is still a long-term dream with 31 per cent of those wanting to buy their own home saying it is 10 or more years away, includ-

ing 14 per cent who think its 15 or more years away. Of older respondents aged 25 or older, 55 per cent say home ownership is still five or more years away, including a third who say they’ll be able to purchase after 10 years or more. “Based on these figures, the aging of the first home buyer market is likely to continue,” Mr Thompson says. “Our previous research has already shown that while the majority (77 per cent) of first home buyers in 1979 and earlier were under 30, about half (52 per cent) of those who bought their first home more recently, between 2010 and 2015, were 30 and over.” Just 14 per cent of 18-34-year-

olds who want to buy think they’ll be able to do so in the next two years. Most of Auckland’s young aspiring home owners would still consider buying in the city (74 per cent). However the surrounding regions of Waikato (considered by 15 per cent), Bay of Plenty (13 per cent), Wellington (10 per cent) and Northland (10 per cent) were the next best alternatives. Buying in Auckland also means that 43 per cent of the future market participants anticipate paying $700,000 or more for their first home, while just over a quarter (29 per cent) are expecting to pay between $500,000 and $699,000.

A leak on a property can waste thousands of litres of water. A tap that drips once every second can waste up to 33 litres of water per day. If a big jump in a property’s water use occurs compared with the previous actual reading, Watercare will send a letter or leave a high water use notice with instructions on what to do next. Sometimes high use is as simple as using more water in summer or having more people staying at the property than usual. But it’s also possible that a slow leak is not picked up as high usage. A leaking toilet cistern could have been going unnoticed for a long time and become what the householder thinks is the normal use. Steps to follow to identify whether there is a leak: ■■ Look and listen for dripping taps. ■■ Check appliances for any signs of a leak. Look behind the dishwasher, hot water cylinder and washing machine for leaking hoses, seals or taps and check for water pooled underneath. ■■ Look for damp patches in the garden, lawn or driveway during dry weather, or parts of lawn that are always green, no matter how dry the weather has been. ■■ Check for overflowing toilet cisterns by putting a few drops of food colouring in the cistern. If colouring ends up in the toilet bowl without flushing, there is a leak. You may also hear the toilet cistern constantly filling. ■■ Listen for running water within the property when no

taps, hoses or showers are turned on.

Hidden leaks

Watercare has a simple test for householders to find out if they have a hidden leak. ■■ Once the household has finished using water for the evening, check that the dishwasher and washing machine are turned off. Make sure everyone knows not to flush the toilet or use the taps through the night. If doing the test during the day, do not use any water for at least two hours. ■■ Find the water meter and lift the box lid to reveal the meter. It’s usually near or just outside the property boundary, either in a timber, plastic, concrete or metal box. Leaves and debris may need to be removed or flip up the protective cover to read the meter dial. ■■ Do not turn off the tap inside the metre box. Instead note down the reading on the meter dial, from left to right. ■■ Replace the metre box lid securely and remember not to use any water overnight or at least a few hours if the test is being done through the day. ■■ Read the meter again in the morning and replace the meter box lid securely. ■■ Compare the two readings. If there is a difference between the first and second readings, this confirms there is a leak. Watercare provides a free water advice and audit service to Auckland households. Phone 4222222 or email info@water.co.nz to sign up.

Keeping tabs on nature dling, and eliminating waste from fishing trips as they grow to understand how their actions impact New Zealand’s precious marine resources. The event will also introduce QuestaGame, an online environmental adventure game based on wildlife sightings.

Comfort for guests The powder room can be a place with surprising potential. It’s the little utility room placed strategically near the main living areas and designed especially with guests in mind. Without a bath or shower, the powder room, also called a two-piece bathroom, isn’t somewhere people spend a lot of time. But with a little imagination, this utilitarian room can be transformed into a surprisingly beautiful space. All that is needed to achieve this goal is: ■■ A stylish sink and faucets. ■■ A unique mirror, or even several. ■■ A good quality floor which could be heated, if possible.

STAINLESS BENCHES

■■ Eyes on Nature 2016 is at 11am-8pm, April 9 at Auckland Botanic Gardens (entry via Everglade Drive, Manurewa), wearable arts fashion parade is at 6-8pm. The full programme and list of partner activities is online at www.beautifulmanukau.org.nz/eye-onnature.html.

strate their skills in the ‘Out of the Water into the Frying Pan’ cooking competition, with high school students competing ‘Masterchef’ style watched by the judges and members of the public. The day concludes with the popular Wearable Art fashion show where entries from schools across Auckland will be modelled and winners announced. Throughout the previous week educator-led sessions, facilitated by the Trust’s environmental partners will engage students on their journey to learn more about ‘Water for Life’. With event partners Sustainable Coastlines and Roots Creative Entrepreneurs, 1500 primary students will transform recycled plastic drink bottles into self-watering hanging gardens. These will be suspended on three giant ‘C’ sculptures symbolising the event’s acronym ‘CCC’. The resulting living sculptures will be showcased at the Family Day. Environmental partner, LegaSea, will focus on fishing for abundance by not wasting the lives of fish, not putting waste into the fishing environment and not wasting edible parts of the fish. The theme is ‘Water for life – Cool, Clear, Clean’, aimed at encouraging young people to become custodians of New Zealand’s waterways and its life forms. Environmental organisations from throughout New Zealand are partnering with the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust (MBCT) to host the event which is supported by the six Auckland Southern Local Boards, Auckland Council and Auckland Botanic Gardens. The week-long event will be attended by 1500 primary-aged children from South Auckland schools, culminating in a free Family Day on April 9. Open to all Super City residents the day will involve events and activities to entertain and educate young minds. In addition to the hands-on activities offered by Eye on Nature’s programme partners, New Zealand’s ‘Wild Boy’ Brando Yelavich will share insights into his epic journey walking New Zealand’s coastline. School Holiday Programmes A fun place to party for all ages ADVERTORIAL CD237603

IMAGINE a world where everything is big, bright, colourful and bouncy.... Then, discover it’s not just a figment of your imagination any more, it’s a reality! Thanks to Bounce & Beyond, youngsters can enjoy a giant inflatable wonderland and indoor playground. It is a maze of slides, obstacles, zorb balls, climbing walls and wrecking balls. And if that’s not enough, check out the boxing ring, jousting arena, carousel, monster truck, horizontal bungee run, obstacle course, human fly Velcro wall, Toddlerland, and royal thrones. Bounce & Beyond promotes the concept of family bonding, therefore offers parents the chance to join in, instead of just watching. For this reason, the inflatable section is divided by age groups - so babies, toddlers, children and adults

can play in a safe, friendly environment. In particular, Toddlerland has a mini slide just high enough for the littlies, as well as palm trees, little creatures and more. Under-threes can roam in their own bumble bee-themed picketed section with rocking horses, dollhouses, bean bags, cushions and large toys. As for thrill-seeking children and adults, there are plenty of challenges to overcome. Tackle the six metre high climbing wall, roll around in Zorb balls, knock someone off their platform with a wrecking ball, or have a pain-free sparring session using oversized boxing gloves in the boxing ring. “We ensure we have lots of staff on the floor to supervise and ensure everyone has a fair turn,” says the management team.

And even the toilets are themed and decorated accordingly - a duck, ladybird and mouse keep things wonderful. There is also a dedicated crafts and colouring corner for children to sit down and have a quiet moment. Bounce & Beyond is open seven days for everyone - mums, grandparents, coffee and day care groups, school trips and more. They also cater for corporate groups and teambuilding activities after hours. An on-site cafe offers muchneeded refreshments with good quality coffee and Italian gelato. Upstairs, there are private Birthday Party zones available for hire from $99 per room. The Bounce & Beyond team can help with everything from decorations to accessories, table settings and event-coordination. Parents can choose to bring their own food and drinks, or select the

food from their party function menu for $15 per child. Party guests will also receive a reduced entry fee to Bounce & Beyond, so that’s activities and entertainment sorted. So bounce your way

to Bounce & Beyond today. Bounce & Beyond, 10a Kerwyn Ave, East Tamaki. Phone 274 3374. Open seven days, 10am-5pm weekday and 9am-5pm weekend. www.bounceandbeyond.co.nz

UPDATE: NZ Open Swimming Champs

27 — Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, March 31, 2016

Howick Pakuranga Swim Club (HPK) sprinter Daniel Hunter came within a blink of reaching the Rio Olympic qualifying standard when he set a national record in the 50m freestyle heats on day two of the 2016 New Zealand Open Swimming Championships yesterday. The 21 year old was timed at 22.31s to be only 4/100ths of a second outside the qualifying mark. He did go under the 2008 record of 22.37 set by former Olympian Orinoco Fa’amasusiliBanse, who also competed in the championships after several years out of competitive swimming. HPK’s Ewan Jackson pushed fellow Commonwealth Games representative Matt Stanley to the limit.Stanley managed to secure the qualifying standard for the Rio Olympics in the morning’s 200m freestyle, clocking 1:47.68. The men’s 50m backstroke went to Hunter in 25.87. Junior world champion Gabrielle Fa’amausili (United) took out the 50m backstroke in 27.97 ahead of HPK high performance squad swimmer Bobbi Gichard. In Para-Swimming action, HPK’s Tama Solouota placed second in the men’s 100m backstroke. Results: Men 200m freestyle: Matthew Stanley (Matamata) 1:48.34, 1; Ewan Jackson (Howick Pakuranga) 1:48.56, 2; Mitchell Donaldson (Parnell) 1:50.05, 3. owick Pakuranga’s (HPK) para-swimmer Tupou Neiufi took out first place in the women’s 50m backstroke at the New Zealand Open Swimming Championships in Auckland over the weekend. Los Angeles-based Glenn Snyders (North Shore) won the 50m breaststroke national title for the 12th time in 27.34, holding off Howick Pakuranga’s Matt Shead in a close battle. Shead’s clubmate Mario Koenigsperger was third. Another HPK swimmer Tama Solouota took second place in the men’s 100m breaststroke. Meanwhile, in Tuesday morning’s sessions, in the non-Olympic women’s 50m backstroke, the World Junior champion Gabrielle Fa’amausili was predictably the swiftest qualifier by almost a full second. The 16-year-old United Swimmer Club recorded a handy 28.36, some 0.96 quicker than Bobbi Gichard (Howick Pakuranga). In the men’s 50m backstroke, Corneille Coetzee (North Shore) topped the qualifiers. His time of 26.33 was 0.17 quicker than the next best Daniel Hunter (Howick Pakuranga). Robinson, who trains on the Gold Coast like Boyle, was timed at 8:31.27, a personal best, to be nearly three seconds under the qualifying mark. There are 256 swimmers from 56 clubs competing at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre at AUT Millennium, with heats from 10am and finals from 7pm through to Friday. Finals will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 3.

We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

We are only 6 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

Chiefs stars just keep on shining DONOVAN GROBBELAAR

Grobbelaar earns maiden century Howick Pakuranga’s Donovan Grobbelaar took himself to a maiden first-class century after his impressive batting efforts for the Mondiale Auckland Aces over the weekend. This eclipsed his previous best of 99 and the Aces went on to build the biggest domestic total ever recorded at the Basin Reserve with 598. Auckland managed to secure the Plunket Shield with a round to go thanks to a draw against Wellington. The side were very nearly able to secure the shield victory with a win but had to be satisfied with a draw that also gave them the title. Auckland hasn’t held the first-class title since 2008/09 season and will head to Napier in the final round to try and maintain their unbeaten season.

atching pixie-sized Nehe Milne-Skudder and Damian McKenzie perform Houdini feats where angels fear to tread has been one of the delights of the rugby scene over the past two years. Unfortunately World Cup All Black hero Milner-Skudder and Highlander flyer Waisake Naholo are out of action for much of the current season with injuries but 80kg McKenzie’s star is shining brighter than ever for the Super Rugby table topping Chiefs. Brave beyond belief, McKenzie has the dazzling acceleration that has made Beauden Barrett such a tryscoring super substitute for the national team. But McKenzie is more creative than Barrett and a more accurate goal-kicker. That the injury-plagued Chiefs could return from a horrendous journey to South Africa and Argentina to wallop the Force 53-10 says as much for their fortitude as

it does for chief coach Dave Rennie who has lost the services of assistants Wayne Smith and Tom Courtney. Add to them no fewer than 13 players, Sonny Bill Williams and Liam Messam to the NZ sevens squad, and 11 others to injury, including champion lock Brodie Retallick. Yet they still lead the championship on 19 points, one clear of the Stormers and Highlanders, with the latter having recovered well from their first round loss to the Blues. A feature of the Chiefs’ latest triumph against the Force when they scored 43 second half points, was that secondfive Charlie Ngatai continued to sweetly fill the gap left by Sonny Bill by scoring four tries. A NZ Maori captain and still only 25, Ngatai is making a strong case to fill the even bigger hole left by Ma’a Nonu who performed such heroic deeds in unison with Daniel Carter in ensuring the All

Blacks successfully defended the World Cup. Another contender is the reliable Ryan Crotty who has just returned to the Crusaders. But Crotty doesn’t have Ngatai’s attacking flair or his long, raking punt. Meanwhile the diminutive McKenzie continues to bemuse opponents and amuse fans with his cheeky incisive darts, whether it be as first receiver from second phase play or counter attacking from fullback. Although his goal-kicking against the Force was not up to his usual standard, he compensated with two of the Chiefs eight tries. However, the team can expect a much tougher battle against the Brumbies in Canberra on Saturday. Meanwhile the Black Caps cricketers will be eager to maintain their World T20 winning streak in tonight’s semi-final against an England team that has run hot and cold. As astute captain Kane Wil-

liamson reminds us, T20 is a fickle game. However, if Martin Guptill can continue to plunder runs and spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner continue to extract turn, the Black Caps are in with a chance of making the final. Having beaten hosts India, Australia and Bangladesh, they deserve to. With top batsman Guptill rested in the last game, it is pleasing to note that his form in the previous two would have had Indian Premier League franchises regretting their failure to hire his talent. Meanwhile, having made $10 million before her 19th birthday, Lydia Ko is peaking nicely heading into the first major championship of the season by winning the Kia Classic in California by four strokes from Inbee Park. In doing so she registered her 11th LPGA victory. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
