Bomb threat made to Howick Primary By NATALIE BRITTAN
T
he bomb scares that are plaguing schools around the country are now very real for locals. Police were called to Howick Primary School in Willoughby Ave at about 12.30pm last Thursday after a sinister call was received similar in nature to threats made around the country the day before including Dunedin, Tauranga and Wellington.
Principal Leyette Callister said she could not reveal much apart from police responded quickly and everything was back to normal at the school. “No children were in danger at any point,” she said. Inspector Jared Pirrett of Counties Manukau East Police said the situation was defused and “everyone was safe and sound”. “The school did well and went through the normal exercise plan. Police responded as normal prac-
tice and cleared the school ground and followed normal procedures around this sort of threat.” Mr Pirrett said while local police attended the scene, police around the country also received a handful of similar calls. “We’re conducting an investigation to find out who’s responsible for causing stress to teachers, parents and children.” Glendowie School in Auckland, Kerikeri High School and Kaitaia Intermediate School in Northland
reportedly received threats also. A police statement said initial enquiries indicated the calls originated overseas, despite displaying a New Zealand number. Similar incidents have occurred overseas in the United States and more recently, Australia. So far, no actual threat to any school has been established. However, until any actual threat can be ruled out, police are taking calls seriously and assessing a suitable response at each school.

Spirits ran high at the Highbrook Fun Run, raising an impressive sum of money for charity. The third Waipuna Conference Suites Fun Run or Walk, organised by the Highbrook Rotary Club, drew 475 runners last Wednesday and raised more than $20,000 for the Middlemore Foundation and other local charities. The 10km run was won by David Chamberlain with 40.01mins with Shereen White, last year’s 5km winner, the first lady home with a very fast 44mins. The team prize was won by Fisher and Paykel. First home in the 5km run was Andrew Sexton, who has won the event every year, with Fiona Cromie the leading female. The team prize went to the ANZ bank. In the 5km walk Aaron Johnson was first home, with Lisa Coetzee the first female. Highbrook Rotary Club president Brendan Kelly said, “It was a great day for everyone involved, the Rotary Team, sponsors and runners. It is beginning to build momentum in the local calendar and is a lot of fun for all involved raising money for some very worthy causes.” Search for Highbrook Rotary on Facebook for more (#highbrookrotary).

hree years ago, two car enthusiasts shared a vision of gathering a fleet of British and European classic cars from throughout the Super City and showcasing them in south-east Auckland. Pakuranga’s Laurie Hayward, from the Jaguar Drivers’ Club, (Auckland) discerned a need in the wider regional car scene. Meanwhile Reverend Dr Richard Waugh of Highland Park and senior minister at the East City Wesleyan Church, Burswood, also a Jaguar Drivers’ Club member, organised an informal car show at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga in December 2014. He found the venue to be suitable for a much larger event. That ‘larger’ event will become a reality this Sunday as close to 450 cars from throughout the region and their owners will strut their stuff at the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show. About 7000 people are expected to attend the free entry event. “This show is free to the public which is different from every other car show,” Mr Waugh says. Neighbouring Howick Historical Village will open its gates for a gold coin donation instead of the usual $15 adult charge. “That’s a fantastic gesture. The show will be for all ages and it will be accessible to all,” Mr Waugh says. Funds raised from the event will go to the heritage village. Mr Hayward reflects on the beginnings saying, “We thought we may attract 200 cars. “But it’s caught the imagination of a lot of the clubs.”

BRIT & EURO CAR SHOW: Key members of the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show organising committee, from left, Laurie Hayward, Marion Clements (secretary) and Reverend Dr Richard Waugh (chairman) with Mr Waugh’s 1954 Jaguar.
Mr Waugh says the number of cars entered is an indication of how successful the show is going to be. “We expect 7000 people to come along. We are grateful to the community groups who have been so supportive, and the generic sponsorship we’ve received. It’s been a labour of love.” Primary sponsors include the Howick Local Board which has given $4500 for the event infrastructure; Protecta Assurance for public liability insurance; Jo Clements freelance graphic designer, who has designed the website and publicity material; and Times Newspapers for advertising and editorial sponsorship. Other supporters include Arts, Community and Events, Howick/ Franklin Local Boards; Alan Cutting, graphic designer; Clive Butler, Butler Classics; East Auckland Scouts; Howick & Districts Historical Society; Howick MenzShed; Howick Village radio which will broadcast live from the event; Mark
Ellis/Ray White; and Auckland Council Parks Department. On the eve of the biggest car show the south-east has seen, the organisers are confident it will become an annual event. The show’s organising committee is Rex Benns and Darryl Bretherton (MG), Paul Bradley and Andrew Wakelin (BMW), Ken Williams and Graham Collie (Mercedes-Benz), Marion (secretary) and Mike Clements (Triumph), Laurie Hayward and Richard Waugh (Jaguar), and Philip Horrocks (Ferrari). ■■ The Brit & Euro Classic Car Show will be held at 10am to 3pm this Sunday (March 6), at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga. Entry is free. Man wanted for brutal daylight attack
Two little eggs wait
By Natalie Brittan
T
Police are looking for a man in relation to a brutal attack in broad daylight. Detective sergeant Richard Bull of Ormiston CIB says the incident happened on Wednesday, February 10 at 10.45am at a Paparoa Road residence. “Our victim was home alone and that particular day was quite a hot one and she left her front door open to have a bit of air.” He says the victim had gone upstairs and she returned to find a man inside her home. “They faced off against each other and he simply said ‘money’ quite calmly.” The victim said she didn’t have any and quickly backed away from him, Mr Bull says. “What’s concerning to me is that offenders when normally confronted they’ll turn tail and run but this man has actually turned aggressive and charged at her.” Mr Bull says the woman was grabbed by her hair and shoulders, forced against the wall and hit multiple times causing bruising to her face and a split lip which smeared blood onto the wall. The alleged offender then grabbed her T-shirt which ripped and allowed her to escape. “She ran away and locked herself in the bathroom. She
By Marianne Kelly he shock of being diagnosed with breast cancer when you are 28 years young is hard enough. But Alexia Casbolt is finding strength in two strong little embryos tucked away in a freezer, future-proofing her and her partner Warren Stevens from the even greater shock of not being able to start a family for five years. A week before Christmas Ms Casbolt was diagnosed with the aggressive grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma/hormonal receptive breast cancer. She was quickly admitted to hospital for a full mastectomy of the right breast on January 13. Testing of her lymph nodes came back positive on two nodes. So she has just started a five-month course of chemotherapy, oestrogen suppressant drugs and radiation. Ongoing medication will have to be taken for five years. “The scary thing is that the drugs shut down the ovaries so I will go straight into menopause at 28,” she says. For this reason she and Mr Stevens immediately embarked on IVF treatment for embryo-cryopreservation which resulted in the two eggs. “There is still five years to wait before I can carry those eggs,” she says. “That was the most shocking thing to discover. But the number one aim is to get better and it’s amazing that we have those two strong little embryos tucked away. More than anything, that

then listened to him as he wandered around her house looking for items for several minutes,” Mr Bull says. Mr Bull says the alleged offender then left with nothing, which is rare. “The fact that he hasn’t attempted to flee, assaulted her, and in nature and tone became more aggressive, does cause a bit more concern as to what might happen in the future. “We’ve done pretty extensive area enquiries but we’re aware there will still be people we haven’t spoken to. We’d be more than interested to hear from anybody who saw anything they thought suspicious either at that time or before and afterwards.” People with information can call detective sergeant Richard Bull on 261-1300.
progress. “Warren’s family are my family and we have our friends. We have bought our house and this is my home now, the country I fell in love with.” Plans were to marry at the end of this year and start a family. But now the focus for the couple is to get through the next five years. “Warren is going through everything the same as I am,” Ms Casbolt says. “He’s dealing with it and we are a great team. I call him superman. “He is the calmer of us. I am the storm, he’s the calm.” Meanwhile Ms Casbolt is grateful for the support she is receiving from the team where she works as branch manager at Tile Space in East Tamaki. The company has left the option of working when she is well enough up to her. She’s also a plus-size model for K&K Fashions who say they will welcome her back, even though she will be sporting a prosthetic breast. “It’s nice that there are companies out there where this doesn’t matter. I could be the first mastectomy model.” Mr Stevens mother Lee has set up a ‘givealittle’ web page to help the couple with the cost of extra treatment, recovery costs and, most importantly, lost income so that they can afford to stay in their home. ■■ Ms Casbolt’s web page is https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/ lexineedsangels and her video diary updates are at www.youtube. com/watch?v=yf5RxZxAdAW.

was the toughest thing to handle.” The cancer diagnosis came out of the blue and Ms Casbolt says she cried more about not being able to have children. “Now I know I will have them. But it’s crazy that it is not decided by me. It takes the power away from you as a woman. “ Ms Casbolt met Mr Stevens when he was doing a traditional OE visit to England. Four years ago he brought her back to New Zealand to live. “I left family and friends in England,” Ms Casbolt says. “But my parents were here for Christmas and worked through the diagnosis with me. Fatality in offing at intersection By Marianne Kelly
B
eing told there has been no fatality in 15 years at a Half Moon Bay intersection that causes regular car smashes, often requiring an ambulance, has raised the already near-boiling ire in Keith Ingram. In a response to Auckland Transport (AT) officials who recently accompanied him to the busy Sunderlands Road/ Prince Regent Drive intersection with Pigeon Mountain Road, the chairman of the Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association (HMBRRA) says the reason for not making fixes at the intersection a priority is not an excuse, nor is it acceptable.
“Our fear is that we may soon break the duck and when we do it is likely to be car versus mobility scooter.” So far AT has rejected suggestions of traffic lights or a roundabout at the intersection and does not accept that the alignment of the island on Sunderlands Road for crossing traffic is a hazard. Its decision to put down a high friction surface to reduce traffic speed, Mr Ingram says, will only add to road noise in a sensitive residential area. It’s also planning to install metering signals on Pigeon Mountain Road to manage the traffic flows during peak hours. But, Mr Ingram says, flashing red lights may simply channel
traffic through the marina car parks and access roads to get into Argo Drive and Takutai Avenue, causing further risks to public safety. Driving behaviour is responsible for 90 per cent of the problems and AT is doing nothing to curb that, Mr Ingram says. “Essentially speed and poor knowledge of the road rules and bad road etiquette is the main problem. The police say 70 per cent of drivers turning left from Prince Regent Drive into Pigeon Mountain Road don’t stop. “Only for the grace of God has there not been a fatality. Yet we did have one, but the person died three days later because of complications so it was not counted. “We’ve got to slow the traffic
down and we’ve suggested making the isthmus a 30 kilometreper-hour speed limit. “Everyone supports it, even the truckies.” The isthmus, he says, includes Stand Children’s Services (the former Health Camp), many areas of infill housing, 64 new properties in Compass Point Way, but the infrastructure to feed the growth has not improved. Prince Regent Drive is a designated bus route. But, he says, it’s also part of a rat race from Takutai Avenue to Glenmore Road where residents can avoid numerous sets of traffic lights before they hit Pakuranga Road. “The police know about it,” Mr Ingram says. “But they say it’s too
dangerous to stop the motorists when they are seen speeding and they have to chase them.” The HMBRRA has recommended that AT impose the 30-an-hour speed restriction, starting in a 500 metre radius from the intersection up each of the three roads. But in a response to the Times last December AT said the area would not qualify for a reduction in the standard 50 kilometre-anhour speed limit under the Setting of Speeds Limits rule, set by the Ministry of Transport. They’ve told Mr Ingram the legislation would have to be changed. He retorts: “So get started on the legislation change now!”
Speaker thieves turning up volume in East Auckland By Natalie Brittan
KC11496
A school has lost its speakers for the second time and police believe the trend of teens blaring music on bikes is responsible. Ormiston Senior College had four of its outdoor speakers used for public announcements stolen more than a week ago, just days after replacing three stolen over the Christmas holidays. Executive officer Diedre Lane says the thieves stole an industrial ladder from a building site to reach the
speakers located on the external side of the building and positioned around eight metres high or higher. “Before we replace them we need to find out how we can secure them – with cages or something that we make it more difficult to remove,” Mrs Lane says. The school has had to foot the bill because the speakers are not worth the insurance excess. Sergeant John Roberts, of Counties Manukau East Police’s tactical crime unit, says the thefts mimick an overseas trend where large

speakers are placed on push bikes to be used as makeshift stereos. More than 80 thefts of this nature have been seen across Auckland with three or four recently in East Auckland, including the Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre in Lloyd Elsmore Park. “What happens is they [youths] put speakers on bikes and have sound-off battles,” Mr Roberts says. “We’re actively trying to encourage the community to identify their speakers and make it harder to steal.” Mr Roberts says this includes
using technology such as SelectaDNA which marks property with an invisible ink unique to each pack or keeping a record of serial numbers. “It is a significant cost to schools and community groups as these speakers can cost upwards of $1000,” he says. “We want to send out a message that anyone riding around with thousand-dollar speakers on their bikes will certainly be attracting police attention.” People with information can contact sergeant John Roberts on 261-1300.

College gymnasium shaping up P
akuranga College’s brand new 1600m² multipurpose, double gymnasium is taking shape. The facility is on target to be handed over by design and build company Indesco at the end of August. The school will then commence the fit-out of classrooms and installation of audio visual equipment. Situated next to the existing gym and more than twice its size, the new building will be equipped
with a sprung hardwood floor and will accommodate two fullsize basketball courts. The main area is expected to be used for a number of activities including basketball, badminton, volleyball, dance and gymnastics, as well as school assemblies. The $4m facility will also feature four changing areas, administration offices and equipment storage plus first floor classrooms and a covered terrace offering uninterrupted views across the school playing fields.
more cash needed: Pakuranga College has managed to raise enough money to complete the basic gymnasium structure but it urgently need the support of the community to pay for the internal fit-out. Photo supplied
Indesco’s David Stewart of design and build company said flexibility is a key part of the building’s design. “The facility will be acoustically adapted so that it can be used as a 1000 (person) capacity auditorium. The floor will also be reinforced to accommodate retractable bleacher seating and the first floor will feature moveable partitions to allow it to be used in a variety of configurations.” Local sports groups will also benefit, like the Eastern Basketball Club which was started at Pakuranga College by former associate principal Richard Dykes using funding from Counties Manukau. It now run by Auckland Basketball Services (ABSL). ABSL eastern co-ordinator Bernadette Hing said they are excited about the new gym. “There is a real shortage of suitable venues in this area. Basketball is the fastest growing sport in New Zealand and we now have
50 teams. More space means that more children will have the opportunity to be involved in the sport.” Pakuranga College is currently working hard to raise funds to fit out the gym. Principal Michael Williams said the school has managed to raise enough money to complete the basic structure.

A publicly funded job scheme is benefitting an East Tamaki business that is growing as quickly as it can find suitable staff. Seedling NZ produces and distributes interesting toys and innovative activity kits for children, with its export business now extended into 20 countries. Seedling was founded by chief executive Phoebe Hayman in 2007 as a home business and has expanded to an East Tamaki commercial premises that is manned by 32 staff members and includes a retail store. Finding suitable employees is always a challenge for businesses, though Seedling has had many successes using the CadetMax scheme, says general manager Brenda Margot. Leah Gates, the general manager employment for the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, says CadetMax is a partnership programme between the chamber and the Ministry of Social Development that aims to place young people into entry level and work experience positions. “CadetMax matches businesses with talented young people who have a positive attitude, strong work ethic and the ambition to succeed,” she says. An interested visitor to Seedling recently was the Minister for Social Development Anne Tolley, who was on a busy day’s tour of the Botany electorate arranged by MP Jami-Lee Ross. They met Ms Margot, Ms Gates and former CadetMax placements and now staff members, Lauren Mascalle, Reuben Manuel and Leah Salt. “Anne and I were intrigued to see how the cadets were working out for Seedling,” says Mr Ross. “What we found is it’s a win-win situation for the employer and the cadets. Seedling gets the ideal employees it’s looking for, and the cadets get the good stable jobs they’re searching for. “Seedling is an encouraging and supportive employer. It wants its staff to be happy in its work, which leads to very positive results in productivity.” Ms Gates says CadetMax is a free service to chamber member businesses, which includes pre-employment screening, assessment and training to ensure the candidates are work-ready. They also receive ongoing mentoring in their first year of employment. CadetMax has helped more than 700 young people get their careers started since 2008.

Personal music devices seem to be the culprit and while ear buds are probably worse than headphones – key advice is that you should always be able to hear background sound when listening to music. For those of us more advanced in years, protecting the ears is also important. When mowing the lawns, using power tools or other noisy machinery – it just makes sense to wear plugs or earmuffs. Once hearing is gone you can’t get it back. Sometimes hearing is reduced simply due to wax build up. The best advice when the ear canals fill with wax is to have them suctioned under a microscope when available. This is safer than water syringing and is much less likely to result in complications. Many people should avoid ear syringing including those with deafness in one ear, a past burst ear drum or recent infection. The visible part of the ear, the pinna can also be prone to disease. Skin cancers frequently arise on the ear – and men are far more likely candidates than women. Squamous cell cancers are particularly common and need urgent attention as they are more likely to spread to the lymph nodes than from most other areas. A wide hat, as well as diligent application of sunscreen into all the folds of the ear are essential. Another lump on the ear goes by the fancy name Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis. This is a painful but benign condition usually caused by sleeping on the same side each night. If in doubt, see your doctor. Hearing loss is common, frustrating and potentially expensive. Doctors can recommend audiologists and ENT specialists when appropriate. Protecting the ears to avoid future troubles is a good investment! Yours in good health – Dr. Bryn Thompson, Lead Clinician

ADVERTORIAL JH10980
Full focus on community service T
he East Auckland expert with the all-round talent to get the best results for his clients is the gentleman real estate agent, Peter Young JP. Whether it’s for a buyer or seller, Peter knows how to seal the deal. He’s the friendliest and most professional of real estate businessmen, who not only cares for his clients but the community in which he lives, being a member of the Justice of the Peace Association New Zealand (JP). He’s been a keen volunteer and contributor on many community projects and initiatives, and the one he’s most proud of is his efforts in creating the beautiful, spiritually enlightening Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush. He’s also the senior advisor for the Buddha’s Light International Association (NZ), for which he was the highly-respected president for six years. Because Peter has exceptional sales and marketing skills, combined with his commitment to providing first-class service, a large number of customers return to do business. It’s also due to his integrity and efficiency, knowing exactly what his clients want. “There is no better testimonial for excellent service than repeat business and referrals,” Peter says proudly. Real estate transactions can be complex and a stressful time for the people involved, but Peter has the knowledge and ability to ease their minds and concerns. He’s been a top agent for Auckland’s leading realtor Barfoot and Thompson since 1998, working on hundreds of residential and rural deals. And he has the skills and knowledge of how to assist and direct property developments, being a successful residential property developer himself in Dannemora, with his own company, Lumbini Ltd. “It was a small farm that I subdivided into six parcels of land,” says Peter. “It’s a very smart development, which I spent a lot of time considering everything that a home and property owner would want, such as access and connection to all the modern-era utilities.” Peter has run twice for the Howick Local Board in Auckland Council elections in 2010 and 2013, narrowly missing out in the strongly contested Botany subdivision. He remains determined to become an elected representative and says he will stand again as a candidate for the Howick Local Board in this October’s localbody poll. “I believe I have a lot to contribute and want to be able to serve all of the people in my area, especially the ones who are new to it and want a sense of belonging to a place that is welcoming and working positively together,” says Peter. “Our area is growing fast with so many homes being built especially in Flat Bush and Ormiston. We must respond by providing the best in new public services and amenities. “We have a job to do and lead a new community to come together, as we have done in Dannemora since the 1990s.” Peter was born in Hong Kong, where he started out as a consultant in foreign exchange, commodities, and business

investments, and transitioned to being a successful advertising executive for Yellow Pages for 10 years. It’s during this period that he recalls a “very famous” advertisement script and campaign that he developed for a transportation company that’s still fondly remembered in Hong Kong. Peter is fluent in English and the Chinese languages of Mandarin and Cantonese, and has spent periods working and living in Taiwan and Indonesia, where he was also a Rotarian. But the time he had in the bustling and vibrant environment of the world’s most populous city, Shanghai in China, in 199298, commenced his outstanding career in real estate. He still carries his No. 3 card of the Shanghai Real Estate Institute, only the third issued by the esteemed organisation, and built up a company, E House, which operated in Shanghai and Fiji. He was also the Associate Professor of the Real Estate College of Shanghai. It was the early days of an open real estate market in China and the highly experienced Peter had the responsibility of teaching his colleagues how to sell and negoti-
ate property purchases, a role he thoroughly enjoyed, building up a team of 100 sales people who reported to him. With all the business knowledge that Peter Young JP has accumulated in the different environments he’s operated in over a long and distinguished career, there is no other better equipped real estate expert to manage a client’s requirements. He’s valued and trusted. One of Peter’s neighbours, Jon Davison, had land he wanted to sell in pleasant, semi-rural Point View Drive, East Tamaki Heights, engaging the all-round talents of Peter to market his property. “I got a fantastic result, one that I would not have got through any other agent,” says Jon. “Peter has the expertise, lots of happy clients, and he’s easy to deal with. “He was also good in handling all of the council matters and had access to all the necessary information, which he was able to explain clearly for me to understand. “I thoroughly recommend Peter to anyone who is selling a property and enjoyed having him secure the result I was very happy with.”
Fun family barbecue
It was a beautiful summer’s day and the families turned out in big numbers for the annual Botany Summer Barbecue, hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. Hundreds flocked to the Old Flat Bush School hall and grounds for the family-oriented event on Sunday, February 14 (St Valentine’s Day), which provided entertainment, a tasty variety of food and drink treats, and an opportunity to gather together in a delightful historic location. Leading Barfoot and Thompson real estate agents Peter Young and Robben Li showed their strong commitment to the local community event by providing free carnival rides for the excited children. Another major sponsor for the day was their friend, Colin Zheng, of ANCO Properties Development. Peter says: “As local businesses, it’s important that we give back to the people who show their tremendous support to us. “It’s our great pleasure and privilege to be a part of Jami-Lee Ross’ fantastic free Botany Summer Barbecue each year. “To see the families and children smiling, laughing and enjoy-
ing the carnival atmosphere makes it all worthwhile. They had great fun and so did we.” Peter, who is highly regarded as a kaumatua (respected elder) in the East Auckland community, encourages all older people who have the time and skills to contribute and volunteer in their communities. “It’s so important to have our experienced people passing on their knowledge to the younger people and children,” he says. Colin, whose company ANCO Properties Development has been constructing homes in the Flat Bush and Botany areas for the past five years, says: “I believe that if we are doing business with local people, then we should also try and do our best in bringing these new communities together. “This is a wonderful place to live and work and it will only get better as it grows and flourishes.”
Teaching next generation
The community of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple is very important to Peter Young and his family. To be able to celebrate the successes and achievements of the children at its Chinese School was an enjoyable experience for him last November. Fo Guang Chinese School opened 13 years ago with 25 students. It has now expanded to more than 20 classes and a roll of 300 students. Subjects taught include Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Pre-School Chinese, Adult Chinese, Mathematics, Finger Arithmetic, and Drawing. “Parents have full confidence in the teaching expertise of the Fo Guang Chinese School, as they see their children’s education improve in the respective subjects learnt,” says Peter. “Venerable Master Hsing Yun has always emphasised a vision to propagate Buddhist teachings through cultural activities and fostering talent through education. “The new facility of the Fo Guang Chinese School is an enjoyable learning environment for the children, led by the School Master, Venerable Man Shun.”
Smile – it’s dessert time
Encouraging friends and associates to create their own businesses and set up in the East Auckland area has long been a philosophy of Peter Young. He’s helped many people along the way and he’s particularly pleased with the opening of a fabulous new dessert restaurant in Somerville, Howick. Friends of Peter are proud to bring the first franchises of Smile Dessert to New Zealand, one of which is now serving sweet Asian delights at the Meadowlands shopping complex. Peter is excited about the new dessert restaurant that was opened by him and Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross on December 5, with a special ribbon-cutting event that was celebrated by a troupe of Chinese dragon dancers. “There are more than 1000 Smile Dessert franchises all over the world, so to have the first ones in New Zealand being established in Auckland is really fortunate for people who love the finest dessert cuisine,” says Peter.

Ferry consent just a band aid By Marianne Kelly
R
esource consent to build a new passenger ferry wharf at Half Moon Bay has been granted. But while many of the submissions to the hearings concentrated on the related parking difficulties, surrounding infrastructure was deemed to be outside the scope of the consent. In their decision the independent hearing commissioners have voiced their frustration. The only land plan Auckland Transport (AT) submitted as part of the consent application was for pedestrian routes. The commissioners say they
News bites Chapel Road crash Two people were taken to hospital with moderate injuries after a crash in Flat Bush. Emergency services were called to the two-car crash on Chapel Road near the St Paul’s Anglican Church and Sir Barry Curtis Park at about 2.30pm on Monday. A 27-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, both
are aware that AT elected to compartmentalise consents required for the overall ferry terminal upgrade and development, seeking mainly the coastal permits at this stage. “While we appreciate that this option may be driven by funding constraints, we observe that, unfortunately, it does not promote assessment of the ferry terminal proposal in an holistic manner, where all related potential effects (such as traffic and parking) can be considered together,” they say. However, they say that while the new wharf may lead to increased ferry patronage, this could occur as part of the vehicle drivers, suffered moderate injuries. The road was closed while emergency services worked to clear the scene. Auckland Council was called to clean up the oil on the road.

existing ferry terminal operations. “We acknowledge that Auckland Transport is aware of the existing parking demand within the Half Moon Bay marina area, and recognise that a consequent commitment by AT was made in the course of the hearing to continue to engage with the community to address this issue as funding permits.” Keith Ingram, chairman of the Half Moon Bay Residents & Ratepayers Association says he and the residents have been frustrated for so long now and it’s showing. “The parking infrastructure is part of the problem.” In January the Times reported its sudden closure and a bride was left out of pocket after putting down a deposit for her February wedding. KPMG liquidator Vivian Fatupaito says the liquidators’ first report will be out in a few weeks’ time and that she understands Kaihea is currently overseas. “The company was liquidated on petition of the IRD and they’re just in the process of submitting their claims.”

Event attracts almost 600 By Marianne Kelly
W
ith close to 600 people taking part in last year’s popular Howick community fun walk and run, Howick Rotary has reversed the route for this year’s event. Activity will still start and finish at Stockade Hill, but Colin Monk of the Rotary organising committee says participants can expect a more scenic journey. The route heads from Stockade Hill down Mellons Bay Road and along Marine Parade to Howick Beach. Participants will jog past the Coastguard headquarters and up to Cockle Bay Road. When they reach Cockle
Bay, youngsters and walkers wanting a shorter journey will hive off through a detour through reserve between Windross House and the Litten Road shops. The short course is 6.9 kilometres. The serious runners will continue along Pah and Sandspit roads to the Litten Road shops on an 8.1-kilometre extended course. Everyone will then head down Paparoa Road, and Cook and Picton streets back to Stockade Hill for prize giving and a barbecue. The route provides some breathtaking views around Howick and across the harbour, while the extension to the course will challenge
some over a longer distance and additional hill work. “Because the numbers were so high last year we discovered safety issues, such as kids cutting corners,” Mr Monk says. “When everyone reaches the Litten Road shops, there will be a pedestrian crossing to use.” Rotary warns that all roads will be open to all traffic at all times. It is not a race, and participants are asked to be patient and courteous to motorists and other walkers. Last year, Mr Monk says, there was a good turnout from schools. For the second year all children participating will get a medal which, Mr
Monk says, proved popular. There will be intermediate and primary school cups up for grabs, along with spot prizes. “We have had a good response from sponsors,” Mr Monk says. “We want to encourage more younger people and families. This is a family event.” Recipient of funds raised and a top-up from the Rotary Charitable Trust will again be Coastguard Howick. About 15 Coastguard volunteers will be on hand to help with marshalling duties around the course. In total more than 40 volunteers, mainly Howick Rotary members, friends and family, will see the

Car vs pole A car accident outside Botany Town Centre on Thursday left a pole significantly damaged and caused traffic congestion. The incident was reported at 7.52am where the driver of a silver Toyota allegedly collided into a lamp post, partially blocking the intersection of Haven and Te Irirangi drives. The driver, who witnesses described as female, was uninjured and talking to police. The vehicle was towed away and the post was being evaluated for damage by servicemen.

Short film clinches award A
Howick actor’s short film has finished in second place at a prestigious film festival. Raj Singh stars in a short film called The Dream of the Driver set in Auckland which was chosen to be one of 16 finalists from hundreds of entries to the Tropfest New Zealand competition. Tropfest is a long-running international event touted as “the world’s largest short film festival”. The finalists debuted to an audience of thousands in New Plymouth at the weekend and the results were announced on Monday. This year’s theme or ‘TSI’ (Tropfest Signature Item) was ‘dream’. In the movie, Raj plays the role of an IT worker moonlighting as a taxi driver whose dream begins to unravel. No newbie to the acting stage, Raj’s portfolio includes scores of short films, advertisements, theatre productions and arts performances. The Indian-born talent’s latest role connects with him on a personal level. “This is something that really resonates on a day-today basis from the people I meet as a business consultant.” He says the movie lends insight into the lives of hard-
working immigrants who lose sight of other priorities, becoming lonely and vulnerable. “You’re so inclined to work towards money you forget you have certain personal and physical needs.” Raj hopes the audience will be able to empathise. “When you look at the back story and find out the reason they work so hard I hope they will develop a soft spot for those in those situations.” Filmmaker Yamin Tun who wrote and directed the seven-minute long The Dream of the Driver says she had always wanted to enter Tropfest New Zealand and was inspired when she saw Raj’s work.
“It’s great because Raj’s really keen to create work and often people have limited time. It was really wonderful, he really engaged with the idea.” The project manager for arts agency Creative NZ, says it was a very real, emotional journey. “I hope people will say ‘gosh that’s the story of my life. I really know what that guy is going through’. I hope it resonates and that it’s real for people.”

Botany winner goes for gold An unsuspecting local family man who shopped at Countdown Botany has won $10,000. The prize is part of Countdown’s Go for Gold swipe-and-win Onecard promotion. The promotion which ends on March 6 gives Kiwis the chance to win $10,000 gold every day, and four trips for two to the Rio Olympic Games are up for grabs— when
they shop using their One Card. Shoppers need to spend $20 in-store or online and swipe their Onecard. Winners can choose the value in cash if they win like the Botany winner did. Winner, Steven from Botany Downs says: “Thank you very much for the opportunity that the money has given us. We will use it to go to the

However, for the last two years ill health has prevented them from travelling. “Winning the $10,000 will now mean that both of us and possibly even our children can go and spend time with them.” Countdown is calling winners daily.

H
owick RSA poppy day coordinator Jan Lawrence forgot about her duties at last Sunday’s Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo, enjoying the comfort of an RSA shade cloth, not knowing that she was the recipient of the 2016 Times Veterans’ Community Service Award. “It was very humbling and lovely,” she says. In the days running up to the event, Mrs Lawrence, who is also on the RSA executive, was told all sorts of porkies, such as she couldn’t get poppies to the site because the tent was broken to the fact that someone was already organised to bring the van down. When the day came she
was escorted to the shade where she joined a number of people, including Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and Howick Ward councillor Dick Quax - “it was like a who’s who”. “A lovely girl”, sitting alongside her turned out to be Emma Smith, deputising for her mum and Times managing director Reay Neben who was unable to do the presentation. “It was all so nice I forgot about the RSA and what I was supposed to be doing,” Mrs Lawrence says. “It was completely out of the blue and absolutely super. let him forget that he said it was ‘one day’.” She does a mammoth job of organising about 500 volunteers and when the Times talked to her about her award she had already been on the phone getting Poppy Day plans in action. Volunteers are assigned to stands at retail centres, including Howick, Pakuranga, Botany, Meadowlands, Kmart Botany, Highland Park, The Hub East Tamaki, Half Moon Bay ferry terminal and at Beachlands. Then poppies must be distributed to schools and small businesses “and there are hundreds of them”, she says. Also included are Macleans College students who distribute more than 500 poppies throughout the East Tamaki industrial area.

Surgery Closer to Home Botany Junction
Ormiston Weight Loss Service (OWLS) OWLS is intended to offer the community a surgical choice and clinical support to assist people in taking ownership of their health and moving forward to a better place of wellness. Bariatric surgery assists in weight loss and may be recommended as a last resort when diet, exercise and medication have not been successful and if obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and type II diabetes have worsened, among other problems. The surgical treatment reduces the risk of death from obesity. Many obesity-related conditions such as type II diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, joint pain, lipid abnormalities and high blood pressure, are either completely resolved or substantially improved. The aim of the surgery is to reduce the food-holding capacity of the stomach so the patient has a feeling of fullness after eating very little. Without hunger pangs, people tend to lose interest in overeating and are more likely to stick to a low-kilojoule diet. Despite the benefits, bariatric surgery is not a quick-fix cure. Weight loss still depends on a moderate healthy eating and exercise plan. Patients who follow postoperative diet and exercise instructions can expect good results. However, patients who are unable to make the lifestyle changes needed will not lose the desired amount of weight despite successful surgery. Most patients achieve good to excellent weight loss results following gastric sleeve surgery, typically this is 50-60% of excess weight. Patients lose most of their excess weight in the first year and can lose more weight over the next 6-12 months. Weight will usually stabilise after this. There can be some weight regain, but this is usually minor. There is no amount of weight loss that is guaranteed.
An appropriate candidate for weight loss surgery is: ■ Morbidly obese, which is at least 45 kilograms overweight for male and at least 36 kilograms overweight if female with a body mass index (BMI) or 40 or more. ■ A relatively healthy adult aged 18 years or over who can tolerate the stresses of surgery and anaesthesia; however, patients outside of the usual age range such as younger teenagers or the elderly may be considered in select cases. ■ Serious about losing weight and has tried to lose weight in the past. ■ Prepared to make the necessary lifestyle changes following surgery. ■ Not a heavy drinker. ■ Not pregnant. ■ Not afflicted with a metabolic condition that causes weight gain such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland). For two to six weeks before surgery, patients are required to follow a low calorie diet. The patient may be referred for a psychological consultation to help prepare for the surgery and to ensure they are in a position to make a success of the significant changes that will follow. Most patients are on a liquid diet for the first week post discharge. The surgeon and dietician may recommend a pureed diet for a few weeks before the patient can start on solid foods again. When patients choose OWLS for their surgery, they choose the most experienced surgeons, and are cared for in the well-established facilities of Ormiston Hospital located in south/ east Auckland. The team at Ormiston offers a multidisciplinary approach leading up to and following surgery. How does your garden grow?
Keeping locals in the loop ami-Lee Ross
T
he weekend just gone saw another successful Howick in the Park and Military Tattoo, superbly organised by our local councillor Sharon Stewart and the Howick Lions. A big congratulations to them. A noticeable addition to the event was the number of mayoral candidates running around. New entrant Vic Crone spent most of the day meeting locals, as did Mark Thomas and Phil Goff stopping by between events. The few months before an election is often called the silly season – where the election is front and centre, and politicians don’t always act in the most rational manner. Arguably the term “silly” could be applied to much of the past three years of the Auckland Council, but none more so than last week’s consideration of the Unitary Plan and intensification. I am no shrinking violet when it comes to Auckland growing. We must allow some intensification and greater density to accommodate growth. However, this should be decided with the public being involved and consulted. Apparently not, if you’re the Auckland Council. Here’s the sad story from last week. The Council first pushed forth with increased density plans that would have rezoned large chunks of Auckland to allow for more houses and apartments without any public consultation. It then withheld key information and maps from people. It then
The hard working members of Botany Downs Primary School Enviro Club are currently reaping the rewards of last year’s work, and photographer WAYNE MARTIN was there to capture it. With a lot of help from the property manager Phil Jones and the Enviro teacher Mrs Reid, the Year 5 and 6 children have planted fruit trees and veggies in the new raised garden beds. The school believes that having a garden is really important so that the children can see where the food comes from, learn how easy it is to grow and understand the many health benefits the fruit and vegetables bring; particularly in the fast food world we live in . The children are excited to pick the produce and are currently eyeing the watermelons, corn and cabbages in the garden.
MP for Botany faced the wrath of angry ratepayers once the plans were scrutinised. Then it finally was left red faced as councillors entering the silly season pulled the pin and forced the Council leadership to abandon plans all together. The shemozzle of a process understandably left ratepayers confused. I worry for the state of Auckland housing. We need greater land supply to address escalating prices, but Aucklanders have a right to know where more townhouses and apartments will go and how to give their view. The way Auckland Council conducted itself left locals out of the loop and without a voice. Crucial decisions were taken behind closed doors on a 30-year planning document in an attempt to avoid sunlight as an effective disinfectant. Vic, Mark and Phil have an uphill battle in front of them. Whoever is successful needs to work hard to restore trust in New Zealand’s second-largest public entity. They also need to pull the planning department well in to line. Current and future homeowners deserve more stability and certainty than they’re getting. A
local lad has claimed the top design scholarship in the country. A slick digital submission scored Botany Downs Secondary College (BDSC) student Jacky Zheng the highest marks in New Zealand. He also scored an Outstanding Scholarship in Design and Visual Communication, which puts him in the top one per cent bracket in New Zealand. Megan Cunningham, design teacher at the college, says it was a gamble that worked. Having just returned from a professional development course in July, Ms Cunningham sold the idea to Jacky to make a video presentation instead of an art work submission for his Year 13 NZQA exams. The college submitted a digital video – a first for the school. From sci-fi design and fantasy to illustration, texturising, animation, character modelling, set design, 3D characters and special effects, it’s difficult to comprehend how the 19-year-old has worked with such dexterity and finesse that would give any top video game designer a run for his money. “When I was young, one of my favourite fairy tales was the Ugly Duckling, which teaches you that every individual is unique,” says the highly skilled student who breathed life into the ugly duckling giving it power, speed and strength in the 180 second video game he created. Set in a futuristic environment the main character called Louise which means ‘famous warrior’ can swim, walk and fly which allows the players to explore both the land and underwater, with only the sky as the limit. The young programmer even went as far as visiting the mysterious Forgotten World Highway to shoot reference pictures for his set design.

“I wanted to create an environment that looks deserted yet creates excitement with a looming sense of danger,” says the unassuming lad who plans to do his Masters in animation and architecture at the University of Auckland. Ms Cunningham says she is really proud of him. “He is one of the most dedicated, passionate and hardworking students I have ever worked with and he thoroughly deserves all this attention and praise he is getting for his success. “I feel very lucky to have been able to teach such a motivated student and have enjoyed working with him over the last five years.” Dip Acharya, head of technology at BDSC is equally thrilled that Jacky is one of the four students in the college who has won an Outstanding
Scholarship in Design and Visual Communication 2015. The others are Calvin Hui, Shirley Ho and Kirsten FisherMasters. “Jacky has broken a few records in DVC at our school, he was the first student to achieve a scholarship in DVC at year 12 in 2014 as well as the first student to achieve an Outstanding Scholarship for 2015,” says Mr Acharya. “His brief for last year’s work was to design and model a restaurant for Lake Rotorua. “The work he submitted for his scholarship entry included a portfolio of design sheets, a presentation board of his final outcome and an animated CAD model of the restaurant design,” he says. “Jacky is an amazing young man with a lot of talent. I wish him well for his future studies in Architecture.”

Feedback It was a denial of democratic process Thank you for your online article “Upzoning squashed” (Times online, February 26). As one who attended this marathon six-and-a-quarter hour Auckland Council meeting, I was staggered that a number of council, and a few of the public given speaking rights, erroneously thought the row was over intensification per se – the essential building of more dwellings in our rapidlygrowing city – and that the anger came from the nimby brigade. This brought derision and disbelief from the public gallery, as the nub of the issue was quite simply council’s denial of democratic process: behind closed doors council had introduced a swathe of ill-thought out zoning changes, without giving homeowners a remote chance to reply. In Howick, that meant allowing a potential Great Wall of China of apartments to be built along the highest contour on the seaward side of the village, effectively destroying all of the public’s sweeping Gulf views, which epitomise this legendary area - all of this without consultation. Mercifully the majority threw it out, and future generations of local people will thank council for uphold-

‘Cute’ creature is aggressive Re ‘Soaking up the sun’ (Times, February 25). Interested but alarmed to read your piece on the ‘friendly-looking sea creature’. However a word of warning – the creature shown is a leopard seal and they are not friendly. They are aggressive and have certainly killed one diver in the Antarctica (not a Kiwi, a British scientist a few years ago). Their bullet shaped heads are unmistakeable and they are one reason why penguins hesitate to enter the water (the other reason is killer whales). Treat all seals with respect and view at a distance. When viewing fur seals on South Georgia we were warned; you may feel you can out-run them, but trip up and you have a dangerous and very heavy problem on top of you. Jeremy Sutton-Pratt
Call for more beach access for dogs I have walked dogs on the Howick beaches for 40 years and could be very rich if I was paid for the rubbish children, parents and others have left behind. Why do they have advantages over responsible people who not only clean up after their dogs but also after them? Marion Byrom

It represents to me, not just some far-flung colonial empire but the best of virtues espoused over more than 150 years. Whether it represents a sense of justice, the vitality of our language, the freedom of non-bigoted religious life, the importance of education or the enjoyment of rugby, cricket or theatre and even sheep farming, we have a lot to owe especially those that served two World Wars carrying British passports. Some might malign, for instance, Sir George Grey and the outcome of the Maori Wars but who would be aware of his efforts to found 19 native schools in South Africa or the three unsuccessful efforts for Aboriginals in South Australia? Few would also be aware that he founded Auckland Grammar School not just for the elite zone that now exists but opened it for all students in the South Pacific. Our sacred flag shows who shaped this country and where it was shaped. It wasn’t somebody fleeing from a republic or a goosestepping dictatorship. It was from that flag in the corner. To change the flag on some whim or fancy is to spit on our ancestors who helped make New Zealand what it is today. John Holms One of 1.1 million Kiwis residing in Australia

Bryant Marine for seafarers With the world’s best harbour at our front door and the promise of a drier, milder autumn, now is the time for boaties to ensure they are ready to take advantage of every seagoing opportunity. It’s the perfect time to look at buying that new aluminium or fibreglass boat or having your boat’s motor thoroughly checked by the expert staff at Bryant Marine located at the Half Moon Bay Marina. Ray Bryant is well-known in the boating fraternity for his technical expertise with outboard and inboard motors and as a supplier of products and service for the Mercury brand. He also has one of this country’s leading authorised MerCruiser Repower Centres, supplying parts, motors and stern legs throughout New Zealand and the Pacific. Customers come from all over New Zealand or Ray (or one of his expert technicians) will travel to them. His last ‘working’ tropical trip was to Rarotonga. The Upper North Island agent for Kiwikraft and Aqualine aluminium boats, Bryant Marine is also the North Island agent for fibreglass Barchetta boats made in the South Island by leading international boat designer, Scott Robson. The showroom has some very good-looking boats displayed and the staff there can provide information on all the models available.
Ray established Bryant Marine on the marina in 1987. Since then he’s had to move premises on three occasions to allow for the development of his business. He loves the convenience and atmosphere of the Half Moon Bay setting – especially now with the vibrant new restaurants and supermarket. He has a staff of four including experienced technician, Andy Rushton, who has worked there for 11 years. “The marina is really a one-stop shop for the boating world – here we have boat builders, boat painters, riggers, electricians and many others involved in the industry. The

different businesses work in well together – we enjoy good relationships.” The current location of the business includes a workshop, showroom and reception area and is conveniently located five minutes from the boat ramp, close to hardstand and haul-out facilities. “It’s a very nice setting at the heart of the boating world,” Ray says. A boat broker is also based at the office to help customers keen on investing in new and second-hand larger boats. Ray, himself, is a qualified automotive mechanic, who started his working life on trucks and industrial equipment.

“I got sick of working on big, dirty and heavy things and decided to concentrate on a career as an outboard motor technician.” In the early 80s, Ray was based out of Townsville in Northern Australia, his work taking him to many exciting locations. “I worked on boats right around the Australian coastline,” he says. However, he has also had racing experience and was part of a Kiwi team in 1996 representing New Zealand at World Offshore Racing near Mar de Plata in Argentina. With his almost life-long love of boats Ray, and his team, can be

felt like I was going on a blind date – except with a tableful of people. Is that what it’s like these days? Online social groups all clamouring, ‘pick me, pick me!’ There’s Neighbourly, Tinder, Table for Six, Meetup, Facebook of course, and countless more all offering a range of social networking services to suit any palate. But that was not how I met Jess Kho, avid home chef, blogger and beaming host with recipes galore up her sleeve. Jess had invited me, a reporter at the traditional paper, and my plus one to sample a home-cooked evening meal in her Golflands home. Having never done anything of this sort – aside from the odd blind date or two – I was intrigued and that’s how the photographer and I found ourselves standing outside a house filled with parked cars. Mingling in the typical suburban household were friends Jess had met through Meetup and Neighbourly and others. The effervescent yet eccentric Jess told me her real motivation was to “connect” with people who loved to cook, by welcoming them into her home for a dining experience, collaborating with them or serving weekly

takeaway meals. In fact, Jess’ neighbour, a regular client who picks up takeaways on a weekly basis, says her three young boys love her creations, the ayam masak merah (a spicy tomato Malaysian chicken dish) in particular. I learnt that my host hails from East Malaysia (Borneo) and that she never really learnt how to cook until coming to New Zealand many moons ago. Now with her three children all grown up, Jess wanted to invest her time and energy in the kitchen. It began with curry puffs and ham and cheese pastries, the first two starters of “a six course degustation”,

Jess proclaimed. They were followed by a Chinese style pork hock main with copious amounts of herbs, spices and Chinese wine accompanied by fried rice. A traditional Chinese New Year dish, according to Jess, even though she doesn’t really like pork. A beef rendang and coconut rice was the second main course and the final flourish was a fish pie made from Australian fish hake which Jess took great pains to obtain from Botany Pak’nSave and served with the puzzling combination of celery sticks with mayo on top. Dessert was a beautiful looking black forest cake brought by a guest. They reminded me of home, of casual family and bring-a-plate gatherings, which is not a bad thing. But for a few minutes during the dinner I fancied myself an MKR judge (preferably of the Rachel Khoo variety) gently but firmly telling Jess what I really thought of the food and rating it out of 10 (six from me, a selfconfessed food snob). If you have an open mind, an adventurous palate and don’t mind strangers, then Jess’ concept could be right up your alley. Think of it as dining on a grassroots level – not fancy, off the beaten track, and with plenty of heart. These days, it’s very fashionable at eateries to sit at a communal table next to a stranger anyway, so why not practice it in someone’s home? Who knows, it could be the next big thing. It’s not quite my cup of tea, but I wish Jess all the best of luck. As for those who are curious, check out www.kiwihomechef.com

Outstanding international pianist Christopher Hinterhuber returns to New Zealand from Vienna to perform Brahms’ 2nd Piano Concerto with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra. The concert is the first of the 2016 season for the MSO which steps into its 23rd year. It will also be a celebration of a 10-year recording bond between Mr Hinterhuber and MSO conductor, Professor Uwe Grodd. Mr Hinterhuber is a professor at the University of Performing Arts in Vienna and has won several top prizes for piano competitions in Leipzig, Saarbrucken, Pretoria, Zurich and Vienna. Some will know of his work in 2002/2003 when he was a rising star at major European concert halls and Carnegie Hall, New York. MSO’s concert, the Vienna Masters, will showcase Brahms’ 2nd Piano Concerto, a dramatic piece intertwining raptures of the greatest love songs, with the intimacy of lullaby. Mr Grodd has included Haydn’s Symphony No.101 known as Clock Symphony because of its ticking rhythm in the second movement and described as a joyfully

Up-zoning squashed By Marianne Kelly
A
fter a widespread furore, Auckland Council has voted to remove ‘out of scope’ zoning changes from the proposed Auckland Unitary Plan. Howick Ward councillors, Sharon Stewart and Dick Quax were among the 13 who voted to withdraw the contentious changes which were not directly supported by any public submissions. Neither Mr Quax nor Mrs Stewart was a member of the council’s Unitary Plan Committee that supported the out-of-scope recommendations. For the Howick Ward these included up-zoning the upper section of the seaward slopes of Howick between Bleakhouse Road and Tanglewood Place by two jumps, from ‘single housing’ to ‘mixed housing urban’; also a stretch along both sides of Pakuranga Road from the Pakuranga Plaza to Lloyd Elsmore Park which was moved from mixed housing suburban to mixed housing urban. Mr Quax isn’t surprised at the widespread Super City furore over the stealth in which up-zoning was introduced to Auckland Unitary Plan deliberations. “I have been predicting
VIEWS THREATENED: Lookout from Stockade Hill.
since 2011 that there would be problems.” He believes the out-ofscope zoning was slipped in because council officers became aware that there was no way they could fit 280,000 houses within the 2010 MUL (metropolitan urban limit). Independent reports written when the Auckland Plan was released and reviews of Auckland Council’s 2012 study on the city’s capacity for growth found a 400 per cent difference between the number of extra dwellings council planners projected could be achieved and the independent studies. The council’s study said there was an extra 188,164 capacity for infill residential dwellings and 272,150

if redevelopment occurred within the existing urban areas. But the later independent studies showed that without major re-zoning only 45,000-60,000 dwellings could be provided in intensified form in the next 30 years. Without major re-zoning and sticking to town centres and corridors could provide 90,000-120,000 extra dwellings. The rub came when the independent report said that with major re-zoning in most current areas another 200,000-270,000 extra dwellings could be provided – “requiring huge political resilience”. Mr Quax says: “The reports showed that the numbers the council pro-
jected was unachievable and could only be done with widespread major upzoning, The community would react and the councillors would have to be hard-nosed. “That the plan is unachievable has largely been ignored by the planners and some of the political arm of the council. “When, last NovemberDecember, the council slipped in last-minute outof-scope zonings it was done on the advice of council officials, “Mr Quax says. “When I asked what the reasoning for out-of-scope recommendations was, the officials’ response was ‘we are using our best professional judgement’. I find that appalling. This is not a political process, it’s being run by planners.” It resulted in a two-tier process. One tier was the draft Unitary Plan which was consulted widely. But the ‘out-of-scope’ changes that the majority of councillors have now thrown out were made with no public consultation and no chance for the people to submit. “All these changes could be done by way of a plan change when the Unitary Plan becomes operational,” Mr Quax says. “It would give everyone affected the chance to have a hearing.”

Building consents still on the rise Latest Statistics New Zealand building consents figures are the highest in more than a decade. Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith says national consents at 27,132 for the year and 2538 for December show residential construction is booming. “The doubling in the annual rate of new home construction from 13,500 in 2012 to 27,000 in 2015 is unprecedented,” he says. “This is the longest sustained growth in residential construction in New Zealand history and is now topping $1 billion a month. “The December consent figures of 2538 are equally encouraging, as it is usually a quieter period with holidays. Last month’s figures were one of the strongest Decembers ever.” Dr Smith says he is particularly encouraged by the progress in Auckland. The annual rate of new house construction in Auckland of more than 9251 in 2015 is up 21 per cent on 2014, and has been growing at more than 20 per cent every
year since the Housing Accord was entered into with the Auckland Council. Auckland consents included 1919 apartments, up 68 per cent on the year before; 1399 townhouses, flats and units, up 43 per cent; and 5185 houses, up 10 per cent. Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the increase in the number of apartments consented proves what Aucklanders already know, that people want affordable choices in the types of housing available. “More and more Aucklanders want to live close to transport links, work and amenities,” he says. “That’s why apartments and town houses are so appealing and why the CRL is so important for Auckland’s future. “It also reinforces the need for agreement this year on the Unitary Plan, the single set of planning rules to guide Auckland’s growth over the coming decades which has affordable housing and integrated public transport at its core.”

owick Residents and Ratepayers Association (HRRA) is going into bat a second time to have the ‘special character’ status of Howick recognised in the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP). President Gayleen Mackereth says the notified AUP said, in the case of the Howick special character business overlay, particular attention is to be given to the intimate scale of buildings in Picton Street, the views to and from Stockade Hill and from the Ridge Road entry to Howick. However, in a subsequent planning document the special character overlay for the Howick business area was deleted. In its latest submission to the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan (PAUP) Independent Hearings Panel (IHP), HRRA says it wants Howick, as the oldest European settlement in Auckland, aligned with all the other ‘historic character’ areas in the AUP. “We reject re-zoning as a precinct,” the submission says. “We request that our evidence be reviewed so that Howick can be rezoned in its rightful place alongside the other ‘special historic character’ areas of Auckland, as it
overlay’ for the Cockle Bay old ‘Heritage’ zone and the ‘single housing’ zoning of this area remain as it stands in the notified PAUP and that the ‘special character’ status for Howick Village in the IHP interim judgement be formalised and entrenched. In its interim guidance on special character and pre1944 controls in the PAUP the IHP said Howick should remain a special character area for the purposes of the PAUP process. The HRRA submission also asks that Howick Village be rezoned as a ‘local centre’ as the zoning to ‘town centre’ is inappropriate for the intimate scale and size of Howick Village. In a recent interview with the Times Mayor Len Brown said the IHP was giving some guidance and the council was part of the negotiation as any other submitter. “On that basis we can still not say anything until the process gets to the point in May-June where we find out what the panel [IHP] will be recommending. We need to respect the process, just tai ho and breathe. “Everyone recognises the high level of heritage in Howick. That’s as much as I can say. “In the end we will strike the right balance, respecting the heritage of the village.”

HPK retain junior title Howick Pakuranga (HPK) took out the honours as the leading swimming club at the New Zealand Junior Championships in Auckland. The club won the title for a second straight year in convincing fashion at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatics Centre at AUT Millennium last weekend. They finished with 1129 points ahead of United (Auckland) on 705 and North Shore on 563. The
female competition showed considerable depth with four HPK swimmers among the medals, led by 11-year-old Laura Wesseling with two wins and a third. There were 19 different swimmers to win gold medals and 44 on the podium. HPK earned most of their points tally in the male competition where they had six swimmers among the 31 to medal, led by 12-yearold Ryan Oliver with seven medals.

After many years of rolling up, the Times team is in the lawn bowls winner’s circle. The four of senior sales account manager Janine Hickmore, former editor PJ (Phil) Taylor, and club bowlers Jeff Sparkes and Keitha Harrison delivered the Times’ first championship victory in the popular Bucklands Beach Bowling Club’s business house tournament on Tuesday evening. Sixteen very competent business house sides battled it out over six glorious weeks since mid-January in the most-friendly of community styles. It didn’t matter who won but how you played the game, is the unofficial code. The Times recorded 10 wins and two loses in their 12 games, with the defeats each being by a point. The fours are mostly made
he future is looking bright for the Howick Gymnastics Club. The arrival of new centre manager and competitive coach, Tania Gavilan, in December last year will see the club grow in size and talent. With current membership topping 600, the club is at full capacity and the waiting list for new members is growing rapidly. The need for a bigger gym for the club has been noticed by the Howick Local Board who has made the case for a new facility a priority. “We’re at a good point at the moment because they’ve seen that we need a bigger gym to continue growing not only for recreational (gymnasts) but we’ve also got very talented gymnasts who could compete internationally so we just need a bigger gym with bigger facilities,” Miss Gavilan says. With a bigger club, Howick Gymnastics will be able to expand their programmes and offer more spaces for gymnasts. “There’s a big waiting list at the moment and we would love to offer gymnastics to all the people who want to do it,” she says. “It’s a really good start for any other sport, they learn the basics like flexibility, strength and it’s been studied and proved that girls who start in gymnastics
when they are young succeed in other sports later on. “We want to provide that for everyone.” A bigger gym will also help nurture the talent already in the club, Miss Gavilan says. “We’ve got 10 gymnasts who are at the highest levels but we’ve also got our own 50 competitive gymnasts from five years old to 13 years old.” The Spaniard has a background as a competitive gymnast herself having been on Spain’s national team. She has gone on to coach in a number of clubs including the Eastern Suburbs Gymnastics Club in Glen Innes.

Tavita to coach U18s This year the Howick Hornets Rugby League Club welcome back their “inspirational coach” Jason Tavita. Mr Tavita, a former Howick Hornets premier player, has returned to the club to coach and mentor the under 18s after finishing his playing career at Richmond. Since winning the First Division Fox Memorial tournament for the first time in 2011, the under 18s have had a run of unsuccessful seasons. With a new coach on board and with the club boasting the biggest roll of players ever, the under 18s are hoping to
improve their game this year. “The club is widely recognised as a family oriented club that punches well above its weight. “Jason Tavita is providing through our club, a conduit to his players, an opportunity to play at the highest level,” Junior Club Captain Denie Allan says. According to Mr Allan, the team is “stacked with potential super stars” including Mr Tavita’s son Dylan Tavita and nephew Chanel Harris-Tavita who are both in the Warriors development squad.

Blues make super start S
uper Rugby Blues fans will have regained faith in their team after its outstanding 33-31 win against the defending champion Highlanders at Eden Park last Friday night. It was a great start to the season under new head coach Tana Umaga and followed three encouraging wins in pre-season games. However Umaga is too smart to allow this to go to his head and has urged his players to take it one step at a time in what promises to be a tough season. Still it was heartening to see the manner in which the Blues forwards hoed into their work in the absence of suspended skipper Jerome Kaino who will return to lead them against the Crusaders in Christchurch next Friday night. Although beaten 27-21 by the impressive Chiefs in the absence of Israel Dagg and Ryan Crotty, the Crusaders scrum remains a powerful unit which will severely test the Blues pack. However, with the Blues backs displaying a cohesive flow against their highly-rated Highlanders opponents, they should maintain that edge against the Crusaders. Especially pleasing was the fluent combination between halfback Bryn Hall and Ihaia West which measured up well against classy All Blacks Aaron Smith and Lima Sopoaga. West did miss two easy early pen-
Agnew’s Angle alties but he also scored 18 points from four penalties and three conversions and set up Melani Nanai’s try with a beautifully placed chip kick. In 20-year-old openside flanker Blake Gibson, the Blues have a hot prospect whose outstanding try after breaking Ben Smith’s tackle was an absolute gem. Good, too, to see lock Patrick Tuipulotu enjoy a powerful game after missing most of last season upon undergoing surgery. In Gibson, Kaino, Steven Luatua and Akiri Ioane, Umaga is immensely blessed with classy loose forwards. As expected, prop Charlie Faumuina and centre Rene Ranger made strong impacts upon coming off the reserves bench. It was a win that suggested the Blues are gelling nicely under a new coach following a long lean run in which poor decision making, passing and catching didn’t do justice to the individual talent of some gifted backs. Under Umaga it is back to basics as he seeks to give true meaning to the importance of building a real team.
The Chiefs had cause to celebrate their gutsy come from behind win against the Crusaders and delight in the brilliance of pint sized fullback Damian McKenzie who taunted the defence with his evasive running and stopped 130kg Namani Nadolo from scoring with courageous tackle. It was also pleasing to see clever Aaron Cruden make a good comeback after missing most of last season through injury and witness big centre Seta Tamanivalu have his best game after surprisingly failing in the few appearances he was given last year. The team that made the biggest impact during the first round was the Brumbies who combined beautifully to humble 2015 runners-up, the Hurricanes, 58-10. With brilliant Nehe MilnerSkudder one of the few to keep his reputation intact, this was a poor performance by the Hurricanes which went beyond the loss of superstars Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith. Having leaked seven tries, their defence needs to improve dramatically. However the Brumbies are a dangerous, well-balanced team whose clash on Friday night against the Waratahs should be an absolute cracker. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author
