QUICK PUZZLE NO. 7696
Farewell good people, and thanks Opinion, by CHRIS HARROWELL
I
T’S been an absolute privilege to work for the past ďŹ ve years as Times Newspapers’ arts and police reporter. When I joined the company in March 1, 2010, I was fresh out of the one-year Graduate Diploma in Journalism course at Auckland University of Technology in Central Auckland. Almost ďŹ ve years to the day, I’ve left the position in search of new challenges. I had no idea what to expect when I started out, and, like many new reporters, was thrown into the metaphorical deep end. The ďŹ rst piece of advice I received from a colleague that Monday morning was to phone Howick Police station and ďŹ nd out what incidents its ofďŹ cers had dealt with over the weekend. Five years later I was still phoning ofďŹ cers at the stations in Fencible Drive and Ormiston Road, Flat Bush, several times a week to see what’s been going on in the area. Covering the police beat, I’ve reported on crimes including armed robberies, burglaries, car crashes, fraud, and assaults, among many others.

I’ve also covered some of the most serious crimes committed in Auckland in the past ďŹ ve years. I’ve interviewed a number of heartbroken families overwhelmed with grief at the death of a loved one, whether it was from a tragic motor vehicle crash or a violent crime. It can be tough to see what they’re going through up close, but it’s a real honour to be able to share their messages of love and loss with the community. One of the many things I’ve learned in this job is that the police ofďŹ cers who serve in this area are fully focused on bringing down crime. Many of them live in SouthEast Auckland also and they genuinely care about its residents’ safety. It says something about those ofďŹ cers that I’ve never met one who was grumpy, unhelpful, or didn’t seem to love what they do. As arts reporter, I’ve never stopped being amazed at how many talented and creative people live in East Auckland. It has seemed at times that there are more musicians, painters, sculptors and artists of other stripes here than in any other part of the super-city.

GOOD TIMES: Chris Harrowell with Te Radar.
It’s a privilege to have helped bring you, our loyal Times readers, the news about what’s happening in your street, neighbourhood and suburb. Our newsroom was comprised of a small but hard-working team of reporters dedicated to getting information from the people who have it to those who need it. Day-in and day-out for the past ďŹ ve years we’ve covered what’s going on with the police and crime, the arts, education, sport, the Auckland Council and the Howick Local Board. the newspaper. As well as the successes, I’ve enjoyed over the past ďŹ ve years, I’ve made some mistakes. One of the worst was incorrectly referring to a military aircraft that ew during World War II as a ‘jet’. A number of readers were quick to point out, by phone, email and letter, that I was gravely mistaken, and kindly suggested that I needed to brush up on my history. I appreciated that feedback. It served as a good reminder that people in the news business need to be on our game each and every day and that the details are always important. Thanks for reading.

‘Money at any cost’: Court By NATALIE BRITTAN
TIMELINE OF EVENTS
T
HE frequent exchange of cold, hard cash amongst other evidence will be detailed at the trial of the duo accused of burning and killing of a young Dannemora man. Papatoetoe men Shivneel Shahil Kumar, 20 and Bryne Permal, 22, went on trial in the High Court at Auckland this week for the murder of 21 year-old Shalvin Prasad. The former Botany Downs Secondary College student was a fulltime worker at the Botany Pak’n Save supermarket in the time leading up to his death on the night of January 30, 2013. The charred remains of his body were found the next morning in McRobbie Road, Franklin. In his opening argument Crown prosecutor Aaron Perkins alleged the death of Mr Prasad was motivated by financial means. “A young man has died because Kumar, in part, wanted his money at any cost,” he said. The Crown will present CCTV footage, phone, text and bank records, witness accounts, forensic evidence as well as interviews with the co-accused during the trial. One particular conversation between the co-accused in Kumar’s car which had been bugged by police was a “rather telling conversation,” Mr Perkins said. Following a phone call from the police saying they had found Mr Prasad’s phone, the pair’s reaction is “powerful evidence,” he said. On the day of his death, Mr Prasad withdrew life savings of $30,050 in $50 and $100 notes from the ASB bank branch in Manukau while Kumar waited outside. Later that night he met Kumar and Permal at Permal’s workplace, Frucor Beverages, in Wiri.
Anger at driver licence test delays
JANUARY 30
THE Auckland Chamber of Commerce has slammed as unacceptable the long delays people face for driver licence tests. Michael Barnett, head of the Auckland chamber, said a 12 week driver licence test booking delay “is unacceptable and denying young people the opportunity to get a job”. The chamber says there are no available spaces for practical tests for restricted and full licences in Meadowlands, Manukau, Penrose and Pukekohe between now and April 30 while vehicle inspection company VTNZ is not taking bookings beyond May 1. “Around 70 per cent of job vacancies require the applicant to have driver’s licence,” he said. “Employers can’t be expected to wait three months for someone to get a licence – that job will go elsewhere.” Worse still through was that many young people were driving around Auckland without a licence, he said. “When they get caught they can’t pay the fine and it makes it harder for them to get a job,” Mr Barnett said. In mid-2014 the wait time to do a practical test was four weeks At the start of the year it was eight weeks, he claims. “Stretching the waiting time out to May at the earliest makes a mockery of efforts by organisations, including within government, seeking to solve Auckland’s high youth unemployment by giving them the opportunity to gain job-ready skills,” he says.
1.46pm CCTV footage shows Mr Prasad and Kumar arriving at ASB Bank in Manukau. 9.19pm Mr Prasad arrives at Frucor Beverages in Wiri. He leaves his car parked there and gets into Kumar’s vehicle. 9.52pm Mr Prasad sends a text to his father, saying he will be home at 10.30pm instead of 10pm initially.

Mountains to be alcohol, smoke-free T
he creation of a new policy declaring Auckland’s Tupuna Maunga (ancestral mountains) generally alcohol and smoke-free was approved this week. The policy recognises and respects the spiritual, cultural and community significance of the Tupuna Maunga, the Tupuna Maunga o Tamaki Makaurau Authority said. It will be drafted over the coming weeks and come into effect when explanatory signage is placed on the mountains. “The Tupuna Maunga are taonga to be cherished and respected. The sight of cigarette butts and discarded bottles/cans is not conducive to the living connection our communities have with these important places, said authority chair Paul Majurey. “The alcohol and smoke-free

policy is another of the Maunga Authority led measures to enhance the relationship between people and the Tupuna Maunga. And, it is pleasing this initiative has the unanimous support of the Mana Whenua, Auckland Council and Crown co-governance partners who lead the Maunga Authority. At present, 11 out of the 14 Tupuna Maunga administered by the Maunga Authority have Auckland Council alcohol bans under bylaw controls which apply to all public places, including the Tupuna Maunga. The existing council bans expire in October 2015 but are currently being reviewed by the council in accordance with new thresholds for bans under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

There are a number of vast differences between Hargreaves’ former workplace and his new setting. Macleans is decile nine compared with decile one Wesley. “People say, ‘wow, that is a big difference’, says Hargreaves. “I did that other way going from Otahuhu to Macleans. They want to belong, they want a sense of purpose, and people to believe in them and support them towards their goals. The former deputy principal at Macleans College started as the principal of Wesley College in Pukekohe this year. Steve Hargreaves joined Macleans as the head of economics in 2002, after four years at Otahuhu College. He became part of the school’s management in 2005 as a house leader before being promoted to deputy principal in 2009. “My thinking when I first went teaching was that you actually have the most influence on students with face-to-face interaction in the classroom, Hargreaves told the Times. “But I quickly realised you have more influence further up the school hierarchy because you can influence teachers who can influence students. “You can make policy and strategic decisions that influence the whole

It is different, but [I’ve found] I love chapel. The singing is unbelievably good and it’s quite uplifting hearing the chaplain give a message in the morning. “That is something I did not expect. Wesley is renowned as one of New Zealand’s finest rugby schools, which Hargreaves, who was co-coach of Macleans’ First XV, is looking forward to witnessing on a week-toweek basis. “They have a fantastic rugby reputation. It has a great spirit and a long and proud history. I know I’m going to enjoy watching the First XV play and I think [my rugby background] helps me fit into the school culture.

And because the surface is firstrate, Mr Shaw believes Auckland Bowls should be considering using it for future centre championships, as well as the club’s own champs. Despite it being a busy community facility, not only for lawn bowls but for groups to use the clubrooms each week, it’s surprising to learn there were no financial contributions towards the new green from the Auckland Council via the Howick Local Board and Auckland Bowls, despite applications being submitted. The feedback on the green has been favourable, says Mr Shaw, including from the 20 teams that just battled it out in the very friendly annual Metlifecare business house tournament that ran for six weeks from January 20. The friendliest little bowling club in Auckland always makes the business teams very welcome and Tuesday evenings won’t be the same until early next year.

Howick Auto Centre & Electrical
ADVERTORIAL 127513
H
owick Auto Electrical has been part of the local scene for nearly 50 years and the reputable business has definitely moved with the times. Not only does it offer the latest cutting edge technology in diagnostic and scanning tools for auto electrical issues, but is now effectively a onestop-shop for mechanical diagnostics and repairs, car air-conditioning and marine requirements. “We are no longer just involved with auto electrical work, we are focused on the ever changing nature of car repair technology,” explains owner Craig Wallen. “The business has changed and Howick Auto Centre will continue to do so too. We will continue to keep up-to-date and our staff are constantly attending training courses to learn about what’s new in the industry. “We definitely have the most upto-date workshop in the area – especially when it comes to our scanning and diagnostic tools. We have all the most recently developed and best in this equipment, and will continue to invest in technology.” Manager Dion Lowe has been a well-known face at the business for more than 18 years, and heads a team of six. “This team includes automotive technicians and specialists in mechanics, auto electrics and air conditioning,” he explains. Howick Auto Centre & Electrical’s, marine electrical domain also caters for boaties. With a reputation for technical expertise, reliability and quality service in all facets of the marine electrical industry, their work covers trailer boats through to luxury launches and yachts. The company carries out installations, repairs, fitting and work on solar-charging units. In addition, the business deals with all types of cars from small Japanese models to the large and prestigious European marques, including BMW/Mini, Audi VW, Mercedes and others. It offers offering top-quality service and big savings on bills.
N Howick Auto Centre and Electrical, from left: Sally, Mark, Tammy, Dion, Shane and Craig. “We can service anything,” Dion says. “There is no need to waste time going all the way into Auckland city to see a dealership, we have all the equipment and very experienced mechanics to do what the dealerships do and at a competitive price.” But there’s more. Recently, a very classy purple 1970 Dodge Charger was attracting a lot of attention outside the workshop. This is another interesting arm of the business – the mechanics particularly enjoy working on classic cars and hot rods and have a solid reputation in this specialised work. The business also has its own special line of batteries under the brand of DMS Batteries, these being made to order for the Howick Auto Centre’s workshop. Howick Auto recommends service intervals
to clients and sends reminders. Dion heartily recommends clients should have their vehicles serviced regularly. For example, he says a car’s airconditioning system should be serviced every two years. Replacement of a receiver dryer filter will halt corrosion and damage to seals and this can prevent leaks and improve the cooling system. “Many people believe their airconditioning has stopped working because it has just run out of gas, but this may not be the case. An air-conditioning system should not need re-gassing because the system is factory sealed. If the gas has gone there is usually a leak in the system and fixing it could be as straightforward as replacing a small o-ring.” Craig says as car manufacturers find new and innovative ways to build
cars, the ability for people to fix their own cars is becoming a thing of the past and the need for an up-to-date workshop is becoming a must. “We understand that vehicle servicing is a necessary evil and we like to keep the stress out of it for all our customers,” Craig says. What’s more, when people get a WOF for their vehicle from this team, they can be sure they’re driving a safe car as the Howick Auto Centre team is meticulous about safety. “Howick Auto Centre has its own diagnostic brake rolling machine, which will always go on to check the wheel alignment and shock absorbers. We always do it properly and pride ourselves on our safety,” Craig says. “At Howick Auto it’s not just about getting the pass on the WOF, it’s about certifying a safe vehicle or advising the repairs to get your vehi-
cle up to the national standard.’ Both Craig and Dion are Howick locals, and they enjoy the friendships fostered by dealing with Howickians. “We provide a breakdown service and will happily pick up a local customer and deliver them back home if they are having work done on their cars.” All staff members are warm and welcoming. And that’s evident from the first phone call to the team’s bubbly receptionist, Tammy Leher. She’s adept at making customers feel totally at home. The business has won several national awards from the Motor Trade Association (MTA) for its dedication to both electrical and mechanical excellence. It is also AAaccredited, working in conjunction with car insurers and used car dealers in the area.

The story is similar when it comes to movies. While 83 per cent of those surveyed go to the cinema, significant numbers are streaming (36 per cent) or downloading (31 per cent) unauthorised material. “More than half of those who admit to unauthorised downloads (17 per cent) say that

YouTube is an almost universally popular source for listening to music with 87 per cent of those surveyed saying they use it, followed by their personal music collections (81 per cent). Spotify has also made an impact with 43 per cent of young Kiwis surveyed using that source.

Youths bypass legal channels ALMOST half of young New Zealanders admit to unauthorised streaming of television programmes and almost a third indulge in unauthorised downloading of movies. Those are among the findings of a 2014 Colmar Brunton survey which looks at the habits of Kiwi youth when it comes to music, technology, television and films. A national spread of 16-29 year olds completed the online survey, which has a maximum margin of error of plus or minus six per cent. This permits the parents to enrol for the playcentre education course and work through all levels from 1-5. All courses are free for New Zealand residents. Playcentres largely rely on volunteer parenttime to run sessions and manage the centre which is one of the reasons why the fees are kept low. “Unlike kindergartens where the ration is 1:15, the ratio is one parent to two or three children, says Ms Wright. Talking about the life-changing learning experience at the 50-yearold playcentre, the mother-of-two says: “It’s a great opportunity for mums to spend quality time with

In the outdoor area at the Cockle Bay Playcentre, Anna Harema is demonstrating how to juice oranges to three-year-olds Ebony Suasua, Alya Wright and Michaela Wickam. On the other side of the table is mum Mel Suasua making bread with little Ebony and Alya. The playcentre philosophy encourages the children to decide which activities they’d like to participate in. They say it takes a village to raise a child. The playcentre philosophy veers around it. A lot of young mothers feel they have lost the ability to educate their children like they used to 50 years ago, feels Shannon Wright. “They believe that outside professionals can do it better and are in a hurry to resume work. In the Playcentre Awareness week that runs from March 5-10, president of the Cockle Bay playcentre at 17 Pah Road is determined to give the power back to the mother, thus recognising parents as the first and best educators of the child. HE Auckland Council says online rumours of fake animal control officers scouring the super-city in search of pet dogs to steal are unfounded. The council confirms its Animal Management staff and motor vehicles are legitimate and dog owners should not be concerned. Rumours began several weeks ago on a number of Facebook pages caused by concern about someone impersonating a council animal control officer in Waikato and stealing pedigree dogs. Photos of genuine Animal Management staff and vehicles have been posted on social media websites, claiming they are imposters. Such actions hinder officers when they respond to a dog issue and can also place them at risk. Animal Management manager Tracey Moore says: “It’s important our staff can do their jobs and continue to protect the public from unsafe dog situations, and provide other services such as returning lost dogs to their owners. “We understand dog owners and the public need to know they’re dealing with legitimate Animal Management officers.

Have your say on the future of Auckland Auckland is the country’s fastest growing region. So we’re facing big opportunities and equally big challenges. We need to balance investment in our city, communities and transport with keeping rates affordable. To get this mix right, we need you to have your say on Auckland’s 10-year budget. You can provide feedback on regional and local issues in person at a ‘Have your say’ event in your local area. These events will be attended by councillors and local board members, and replace traditional hearings. Come along on the day to have your say. Tasers on belts? “The time has come for Police Officers to be equipped with Tasers on their belt when they are attending calls for service, as the seemingly weekly serious attacks on Police Officers continue with today’s attack on a Police officer at the Foxton WINZ office, Police Association oresident Greg O’Connor said this week. “It is no longer good enough for the Police hierarchy and politicians to say that, in general, assaults on Police are down when serious assaults continue to rise at this rate, said Mr O’Connor. “Once again a Police Officer attending a routine piece of policing has been seriously injured in a situation where he has been ill-equipped – not having either a Taser or a firearm on his person or in his vehicle.

ith two weeks to go, more than 6000 Aucklanders have now provided feedback on Auckland Council’s 10-year budget and the city’s transport issues are top of the agenda. Submissions so far show that 54 per cent of respondents are in favour of the Auckland Plan programme, with 26 per cent supporting basic transport programme. On funding options, 34 per cent prefer a motorway charge versus 29 per cent favouring a rates increase and fuel tax. More than 650 people attended the Auckland Conversations event which focused on the transport funding proposals, and more than 7000 people have viewed a short video that outlines the transport options included in the 10-year budget. Auckland Mayor Len Brown says he is delighted so many people are getting involved, but that with two weeks to go before
Auckland celebrates St Patrick’s Day Tuesday March 17 is St Patrick’s Day, but in true Irish tradition this year’s St Patrick’s Festival is going to be celebrated ... early! Instead of Tuesday 17, St Paddies Day ... The Parade and Fleadh (festival of Irish culture, actually pronounced flar!) is on Sunday March 15! Be first in the world to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and be on Queen Street at 12pm on Sunday 15 March for the Hugh Green Group St Patrick’s Parade when the world turns a little green.
Police parade Counties Manukau Police will be putting its best foot forward in Pukekohe on Friday March 6 for the annual Counties Manukau Police District Pay Parade and Awards Ceremony. The event will be attended by Police Commissioner Mike Bush, who was previously District Commander, Counties Manukau. Mayor Len Brown and local Members of Parliament will also be in attendance. Counties Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent John Tims says the occasion is an important tradition. “The Pay Parade is a great opportunity for to present at our best for the community of Franklin and the wider Counties Manukau District. Everyone in the District works together to achieve the best outcome and the parade will demonstrate that sense of unity. The tradition of the Pay Parade comes from the requirement for Police officers to march to the local magistrate’s office every fortnight in their dress uniform and pass inspection before getting their pay packet.

NEWS BITES Youth mentors wanted YWCA Auckland is seeking mentors for its Future Leaders programme to make a difference in the lives of young women. The four-year programme sees young women paired with a volunteer mentor, to provide skills development, new experiences and opportunities to support them in achieving their goals. Flat Bush resident Kendal Collins worked as a school social worker before becoming a Future Leaders co-ordinator. “A bit of experience with youth, whether it be with your own children, in your work environment, or through your studies, would be perfect [to be a Future Leader],” she says. Mentors are asked to commit to at least two years in the programme, to ensure continuity for the young women, many of whom have not always had reliable adult role models. Mentors over the age of 25 are encouraged to phone Kelsi Cox on 522-8219 or send an email to kelsi@akywca.co.nz.
Pedalling the length of NZ EMPLOYEES of The Big Red Shed are taking part in a cycle relay the length of New Zealand to raise funds for Plunket Playgroups. The team of 120 kicked off the relay in Cape Reinga last Wednesday (March 4) and will finish in Bluff on March 17. People can support the ride by adding a dollar to their purchases at The Warehouse or online at www. pedalforplunket.org.nz. The funds will go towards Plunket’s Community Playgroups, allowing Plunket to keep current groups going and look to launch more in communities that need them. Plunket chief executive Jenny Price says Plunket’s playgroups are funded solely through donations. “We hope people get behind the race, so we can offer even more children a place to play and learn, and support more parents, whanau and caregivers to nurture happy, healthy Kiwi kids.” As well as the relay volunteers, The Warehouse team members in stores, distribution centres and the Auckland support office are aiming to cycle more than 120,000 kilometres on bike machines to raise funds for Plunket. If this figure is achieved, the total distance cycled by team members will equal three times around the world.
THE Keep New Zealand Beautiful organisation, along with Resene and the Ministry of Justice are excited to be collaborating in the second nation-wide Keep New Zealand Beautiful graffiti free week. Local community groups will join forces to paint out unsightly walls across New Zealand. Many Kiwis will get involved with Graffiti Free Week – when individuals, businesses, schools and groups get out into their communities and help to remove graffiti from their patch. This year’s Graffiti Free Week runs from the March 16-22. Groups and individuals can join an organised event in their area, or they can set up their own event and publicise it on the Keep New Zealand Beautiful website for others to get involved in. Groups and individuals can join any organised event in their area, or they can set up their own event and register it on the Keep New Zealand Beautiful website for others to get involved in.

Goodman announces $28m Highbrook project G
OODMAN (NZ), the Manager of Goodman Property Trust (“GMT” or “Trust”), has announced three new development projects, comprising two industrial facilities and an office building at Highbrook Business Park to accommodate strong customer demand. The new commercial and industrial facilities, which have a total project cost of $28 million, will add 11,140sq/m of lettable area to the Trust’s investment portfolio. The additional space is expected to generate $2.2m of annual rental once fully leased and income producing, providing an initial yield of 7.9 per cent. Goodman (NZ) chief executive officer, John Dakin, says a positive business environment is supporting the rapid expansion
:
of Highbrook Business Park. “With the award winning estate 100 per cent occupied, sustained customer demand is the catalyst for these new development initiatives,” he says. The new industrial developments include a design build facility for tool specialist machinery house, an existing customer at Highbrook whose business growth has necessitated a doubling of its floor space to 4600 sqm.
Photo supplied
The second industrial facility is being developed on an uncommitted basis to meet demand. The new 3400 sqm warehouse provides another option for midsized customers seeking high quality business premises. The success of the initial development stages of The Crossing and a shortage of available office space at Highbrook have also spurred the commencement of a new 3140 sqm office building. Located on a high profile site
fronting Highbrook Drive, the three storey office is already attracting strong customer interest more than 18 months ahead of its expected completion. “It’s extremely pleasing to be commencing a subsequent stage at The Crossing, less than two years after completing the initial development,” says Dakin. “It reflects heightened levels of development activity right across the portfolio, with over $110m of new projects announced since March 2014.” The current development workbook also includes a recent commitment from Downer EDI for a new 1160 sqm warehouse at Connect Business Estate in Penrose. The customer will take a 15 year lease over the compact industrial facility which has a total project cost of $2.2m.

Entranced by island of red eagle By Daniel Silverton
B
EFORE being given the enviable brief of covering an international golf tournament in Langkawi, Malaysia, my knowledge of the South-East Asian nation extended to three things: great food, world No 1 women’s squash player Nicol David, and the country’s catchy ‘Malaysia: Truly Asia’ jingle. But as I was to find out, Langkawi is the type of place a city-bound Kiwi can make the most out of, without having spent hours researching or meticulously planning. Malaysia Airlines flies daily from Auckland to capital Kuala Lumpur year-round, which is perfect for a last-minute winter escape and also provides the flexibility to stay as long as you like. During one of the friendly exchanges at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), a broad smile comes over the locals as I explain I’m a New Zealander going to Langkawi. It turns out that’s because the most widely known fact about the holiday destination of Langkawi is the entire island is duty-free, and the most widely known fact about Kiwis is we
like a beverage or two. I learn later on that the first stop for experienced travellers to Langkawi, located about 30km off the west coast of the Malaysia-Thailand peninsula and a 45-minute flight from KLIA, is often to stock up on fridge supplies before checking into their hotel. Upon touching down, I realise that might also be because Langkawi Airport is international in the same sense Hamilton or Rotorua is, and doesn’t have the range of shops or lavish surroundings of KLIA. So if you’re after high-end goodies, best to grab those on your way to or back from your Langkawi adventure. Langkawi is one of 104 islands that form the archipelago in the Andaman Sea and has a population of about 65,000. Stretching approximately 30km across in each direction, everything the island has to offer is within a short drive or taxi ride on comfortable roads. With work to do, I skip the bottle store and head straight to the official hotel of the golf tournament, the purpose of my visit. In 25 years, the number of hotel
rooms in Langkawi has grown from 200 to 10,000 and the beachfront Sheraton resort has some of the finest. The luxury chalets and shared villas are either in a beach or forest setting, are incredibly spacious and the staff were some of the friendliest I’ve met. And after a relaxing swim in the hotel pool, there’s nothing better than jumping on the hotel shuttle back to your room to save you the long walk – you are on holiday, after all. The golf was being held at Langkawi’s two full-length courses – The Els Club Teluk Datai and Gunung Raya Golf Resort – with a third, 99° East, offering nine holes. In The Els Club, Langkawi is home to one of world’s most scenic and beautifully presented courses, designed by four-time major winner, South African Ernie Els. Gunung Raya is named for the peak towering over the course, which is sculpted upon 300 acres of former rubber plantation land. It’s at The Els Club that I have my first up-close encounter with the island’s wildlife. A number of breeds of monkey
roam Langkawi like the roads and hotels are built for their benefit, and likewise the golf courses. Relations between me and the primates took a turn for the worse when a family of dusky leaf monkeys crossed the cart path and I somehow got between them and the alpha male. The little fella let me know very loudly that he wasn’t happy and put up a brief but slightly frightening chase to ward us away – all of which gave the locals a good laugh when I told them the story on my return to the clubhouse. A more controlled experience of Langkawi’s natural beauty can be found on a cruise of the River Kilim geothermal park. Traditional longboats take you on an exploration of protected mangrove forest and its many inhabitants – the experience is something like a wild zoo with canals. Langkawi means island of the red eagle in Malay, and seeing the impressive birds being fed is the first stop on the cruise. Further along the narrowing river and suddenly the boat is surrounded by monkeys.
Some cruise operators got near enough to the mangroves for the monkeys to board the boat, but to my relief, our captain was more wary and kept out of reach. He did get a little too close to a mangrove python snake for my liking though. The cruise also takes in the Gua Kelawar bat caves and stops at floating fish farms, offering the chance to feed a stingray and see some native species of water dwellers. The final stop is at one of the river’s floating restaurants, which like the rest of Langkawi and as you might expect, specialises in delicious seafood dishes. For a different perspective of the island, I ride the 700-metre high cable car up Machincang Mountain for breathtaking 360-degree views of this beautiful part of the world. But with the golf tournament coming to a close, so was my time in Langkawi. At the end of the trip, I’ve added friendly people, beautiful scenery and unique experiences to the list of things I know about Malaysia. ■■The Times travelled to Langkawi courtesy of Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines.

Looking back, 20 years ago... From the files of the Howick and Pakuranga Times, in 1995 Hi-tech signals change
February 27: Bookworms couldn’t wait to get in the doors when the brand new Pakuranga Library opened last Monday. After a Maori blessing ceremony for the staff the doors of the new facility in the Pakuranga Galleria opened to the public. Throughout the day, a steady stream of locals made their way inside to inspect the premises and look at the $50,000 worth of new books. Other new features include six extra computers and a comprehensive security system – a first for Manukau City libraries. Every book has a special device that sets off a signal at the door if the book has not been issued at the desk. And a soon to be introduced self issuing system is expected to be warmly welcomed by bookworms in a hurry. Members will be able to “swipe their own cards and avoid having to queue at the main desk. Professional movers were brought in last week to move the books from the old premises in the Plaza Pakuranga and an official opening takes place in March.
Scouting trio make history
February 23: Three young Howick men have made Minerva Adventurer group history by each earning the distinguished Queen’s Scout Award. Roger Talbot, Greg Simmons and Alex Stammers, all 18 year olds, were presented with their awards by the Governor General, Dame Catherine Tizard at a special ceremony at Government House last weekend. It is the first time any boy has been honoured with the award in the Minerva pack’s 27 year history, says leader Judy Talbot. “And, to have three at one time is a great achievement, she says. “There is a huge amount of hard
work involved, but their level of commitment has been amazing. “I think the most difficult aspect of the award for the boys, especially at their age, was the 86 hours of community service they had to perform. The three friends have risen through the ranks of Cubs, Scouts and Adventurers together, and this year joined the Waipu Surf Club to train as life savers.
Hanging on for prize
March 2: Six determined competitors armed with games, books and plenty of chat have their hands on a Campbell’s freezer – and their sights firmly set on a $10,000 prize for whoever hangs on the longest. The Newstalk 1ZB endurance contest is part of a grand opening for Mark Campbell Discount Appliances at the Highland Home Centre this week. For the next four days the friendly rivals will eat but hopefully not sleep at the new store while keeping a firm grip on the freezer. A five minute break every hour will give some respite from their task. But, the big challenge for each one will be to stay awake and hang on longer than the others so one can claim the super prize of $10,000 worth of appliances. Store owner Mark Campbell says he hopes family, friends and the public will come along and support the contestants.
Nude awakening
AUGUST 14: A naked man brought traffic to a standstill on Pakuranga Highway on Friday morning. Police were called to the area around Gossamer Dr at about 9am after receiving several phone calls about the stark naked, six foot tall, solidly built man seen wandering along the highway.

Sowers Trust behind youth and families T
he Harcourts Foundation, the charitable arm of Harcourts real estate group, has this week presented The Sowers Trust with a cheque for $3000 that will go towards the purchase of a vehicle for their community workers. The Sowers Trust has been supporting youth and families in Manukau East for more than 35 years, mentoring, equipping and empowering at-risk and in-need youth and families to achieve their potential. As part of tryst’s programmes, community workers provide personalised support to youth who may be going through a specific crisis in their lives, and provide
ongoing support to individuals and families that are in need of help to restore and repair their lives. Trust manager Jenny Naley says The Sowers Trust programmes provide members of the Manukau East community the support they need to stay on a positive pathway. “When individuals and families go through a difficult time, it can be very isolating and people often feel as though they have no one to turn to for help. “Through youth mentoring and the wrap around care that we provide to families, we can provide the professional and volunteer support that’s needed to help them through
these challenges. As part of the work carried out by The Sowers Trust, community workers travel to schools, homes and other locations to meet with young people and their families. Ms Naley says that the contribution from Harcourts will be a significant help towards purchasing the vehicle. “Our ability to be mobile in the community is fundamental to the success of our programmes. “Having our community workers go out to the youth and families in need, is a demonstration that someone cares about their situation and wants to help them, and that’s a big first step.

NEWS IN PICTURES Each year, youngsters at Cockle Bay Primary are given essential skills in and around the water as part the Waterwise programme at Howick Beach. Year 5 and 6 pupils are introduced to water safety and given increased confidence by learning knot tying, kayaking and sailing in Optimist yachts, under the watchful eye of trained volunteers. Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN was on hand to witness one of the sessions last month.

Y DEFINITION perfection is ultimately imperfection – a bit like not knowing happiness if you haven’t experienced sorrow. Put these conundrums in the hands of Canadian playwright, Norm Foster and you have theatre which challenges from go to whoa. Howick Little Theatre’s opening production for the 2015 season, The Love List keeps the audience on the edge of their seats as the convoluted plot weaves its way through the minds of statistician bureaucrat Bill, played by Simon Shreeve, and the past-it novelist, Leon, played by Brian Keegan. The plot, on the surface, suggests a fairly simple debate between the two mates about the characteristics that define the perfect woman. When she turns up on the doorstep they under-estimate the almost supernatural powers embodied in Justine, played by Katherine Mewett, as she displays everything they wish for – until it starts to backfire on them. Shreeve and Keegan are a perfect foil for one another, taking the audience through a roller-coaster of one minute hilarious clichÊs to moments of deep analysis, such as the idea that it’s the imperfections that make a man or woman perfect to the person who loves them. Or the fact that asking for space, but never taking an interest in where a partner has been going, inevitably leads to an unexpected affair in an endeavour to oblige. Katherine Mewett keeps the audience riveted as she careers from one female characteristic to another – ambitious then insecure, tolerance then mean jealousy, allowing space then cloying needi-

ness. And then there’s number four on the love list! Foster’s clever writing reveals the everyday dilemmas that face us all in the challenge to reach perfection in ourselves and the person we love. But just as quickly he knocks them down in the realisation that the dream is unattainable, in fact undesirable. How he goes about delivering these important messages remains with the wonderful HLT cast to
reveal. They and director Vic Leilua have done a superb job in bringing a funny but complex script together which, in conjunction with the playwright, will leave a legacy. After seeing this play you will look at all the positive things in your relationship. The Love List, a ticketed event, plays at Howick Little Theatre, Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga, at 8pm until March 21, and at 2pm on March 8.

Potenďż˝al Community Health Hub services could include: Exisďż˝ng services • Accident and medical services • Specialist consultaďż˝ons • Maternity services including birthing and post natal accommodaďż˝on • Home healthcare services • Children’s dental clinic New Services • Extended accident and medical services to include for example ‘observaďż˝onal care’ for children as a precursor to discharge home or transfer to hospital if needed • Extended specialist services for example dialysis services, cancer care • Older adult assessment, treatment and rehabilitaďż˝on beds • Residenďż˝al services for older people • Rehabilitaďż˝on services and allied health such as physiotherapy, occupaďż˝onal therapy and social workers • Palliaďż˝ve care –including Hospice beds • Extended home nursing and healthcare services • Community mental health services • Interpreter and translaďż˝on services • General purpose areas for health and community groups • Other agencies and organisaďż˝ons At this stage, there is no change planned for the services that Counďż˝es Manukau Health currently provides on the site i.e. the DHB will conďż˝nue to provide the Botany Downs Community Maternity Unit, Botany Dental Clinic and home health services.

In February and March 2014, Counďż˝es Manukau District Health Board (Counďż˝es Manukau Health) sought community feedback and expressions of interest in relaďż˝on to a proposal to sell vacant land at 260 Botany Road, Botany and enable development of a Community Health Hub on that vacant land. [Idenďż˝ďŹ er: NA113A/716] Through the proposed Community Health Hub, Counďż˝es Manukau Health is intending to improve local access to publicly (Counďż˝es Manukau Health) funded services. The community feedback received from the 2014 consultaďż˝on indicated that residents would like there to be more publicly funded services available locally. Having considered this feedback and proposals from parďż˝es who would like to develop and operate the Community Health Hub, Counďż˝es Manukau Health is now intending to sell the full site at 260 Botany Road including the adjacent vacant land, subject to the Minister of Health’s approval. The disposal of the site would be on the strict condiďż˝on that it is developed for health purposes as a Community Health Hub that aligns with the community’s needs.

O most beautiful flower of Mt Carmel, fruit of the vine, splendorous of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin assist me in this my necessity. O star of the sea, help me and show me herein, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me here you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. The prayer must be said for 3 days and the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thanks for prayers answered.

MATHS, ENGLISH, SCIENCE & STATISTICS TEACHER NCEA – Cambridge – IB • Year 3 to University Decades of experience. Makes it fun! Bill Porter B.A. M.Phil (Hons) Auckland University
Some amazing achievements by my students: Sachini 92% (A* pass) for IGCSE Maths.
Emily
88% (A pass) for IGCSE Maths. Students normally sit this exam in year 11. These 2 students were only in Year 10!
Kairui
Excellent for all three Maths externals for NCEA Level 3. “We are so happy for him, and thought we’d better share this with you, because you are the one who really helps with his achievements! Thank you again!”
Luis
Excellent for Level 3 Maths. Merit for Level 3 Physics. Luis has been accepted for an engineering course at university.
Arran
Now a Bachelor of Engineering “Hi Bill, just thought you might like to know that Arran has finished his Bachelor Of Engineering Technology at Unitec. He has been getting great grades (A’s) and has landed himself a great job at a civic engineering company at year’s end. We would like to thank you for the expert training and tuition which we believe was material in Arran’s success.”
Enrol now and take advantage of discount rates for paying a term in advance (see next column). Parents should note that NCEA students are doing ongoing internal assessments during the term which count for credits in exactly the same way as do end of year exams so these should be taken very seriously, especially by those students seeking merits and excellences. Enrol now to do practice tests and to find out what the examiners are looking for when you write your answers.
NOW ENROLLING FOR TERM 1
TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Barking up wrong tree
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, March 5, 2015 — 23
Agnew’s Angle
M
UCH as I detest the manner in which Dean Barker learned of his sacking as skipper of Team New Zealand, he is barking up the wrong tree if he believes he deserves the position of right. The fact is Barker, 42, has been involved in three failed attempts to wrest the America’s Cup from the Russell Coutts-run, billionaire-sponsored Alinghi and Oracle syndicates and it’s time to give a younger talented sailor a crack at his job. As an Olympic silver medallist and world champion in two different classes, Peter Burling, 24, looks to be the man for the job provided Team NZ’s technology expertise can match Oracle’s. It certainly did that when it led 8-1 in the last campaign in San Francisco until chief executive Coutts, skipper James Spithill and their crew achieved the most stunning comeback in cup history to retain the trophy 9-8. Coutts was smart in appointing young gun Aussie Spithill his skipper. Even when his boat lacked Team NZ’s boat speed up to the halfway stage he usually won the starts. It didn’t help Barker’s cause that his boss Grant Dalton called a lay-day at a crucial stage which allowed Oracle Team USA more time to sharpen its speed after trailing 1-7. Furthermore it seemed Dalton’s ego was the main reason he decided to be a grinder ahead of a younger, ďŹ tter man in most of
SPORTS BITES Emblen joins under-20s NEW Zealand Football has announced the appointment of Neil Emblen as assistant coach of the men’s under-20 side. Emblen, the former All Whites assistant and interim head coach, joins the management staff led by coach Darren Bazeley as the team continue preparations for the FIFA under-20 World Cup in New Zealand later this year. New Zealand Football High Performance Director Fred de Jong said Emblen’s understanding of the local landscape was one of the key reasons for his appointment. “Of all the candidates who applied for the role, Neil’s skill set and his experience were the best fit for the position, de Jong says. “He has worked within our environments for a number of years in several different roles and he is also familiar with the playing group at this age level. His blend of knowledge and experience will make his transition into the coaching staff a smooth one, which is important given the [under-20] World Cup is only a few months away.
Age group policy ON THE PITCH: Junior members of Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club had a once-in-a-lifetime experience last Saturday. the races. While Dalton’s ability to raise sponsorship is a strength, reports he earned about $2 million a year from the last campaign didn’t endear him to the public, especially when taxpayers contributed $36 million. Furthermore, while Auckland has been granted hosting rights for the challenger series, the ďŹ nal in Bermuda won’t hold much appeal for corporate sponsors who most certainly will be aware the infamous Bermuda Triangle is where ships and aircraft have mysteriously disappeared. So has Dalton’s credibility after Barker learned of his demotion as skipper from a Newstalk ZB report which Team NZ stated as “inaccurateâ€? because it intended to retain him as a performance manager and
in a coaching role. It could be the right decision given young Burling’s outstanding record in smaller boats. But it will be a shame, although understandable if Dalton remains aboard as CEO, if Barker doesn’t lend his experience to the cause. As a skipper he gave it his best shot and remains a popular humble man, well respected in the yachting world. However, unlike his predecessor Coutts, he’s not a winner. Hopefully Burling can be. Meanwhile, thanks to the heroic roles of Trent Boult, Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson the Black Caps onewicket cricket win over Australia at Eden Park was their ďŹ rst World Cup ODI triumph against them
since 1999. Bowler Boult’s swing earned him 5-27 after Vettori put the brakes on Australia’s early scoring and McCullum’s courageous 50 runs off 26 balls gave the visitors some of their own medicine and Williamson completed his unbeaten 45 with match-winning six. However, with Mitchell Starc magniďŹ cent in scything through NZ’s batsmen to capture six for 28 with his in-swingers, too many Black Caps showed their vulnerability to pace. Ross Taylor, Martin Guptill, Grant Elliott and Luke Ronchi can do better and will need to when it comes to the playoffs. In four matches, Taylor’s disappointing total of 29 doesn’t do justice to his talent.
PLAYERS representing New Zealand at agegroup level will no longer be required to pay a contribution towards their participation in national sides. In the past, the national body had asked for a contribution from players towards the costs of running the international programmes for the under-20 and under-17 teams. But New Zealand Football High Performance Director Fred de Jong says the organisation is now in a position to withdraw that policy. “Previously New Zealand Football has required a payment from those involved in our age-group sides to ensure the costs of providing the highest possible standard of programme could be met, de Jong says. “With significant developments in our internal structures and resources in recent times, we’re now in a position to remove that requirement from the players involved in our age-group programme. The New Zealand men’s under-17 side recently qualified for the FIFA under-17 World Cup in Chile in October while the men’s under-20 side will compete in the FIFA under20 World Cup at home in May.

Neck problems – Do you have it?
T
oday’s modern living means hours of driving and hunching over workstations, this can play havoc with your neck. So it is not surprising that neck pain is the second most common condition that brings people into their chiropractor. Millions of people experience neck pain and related arm pain at some stage in their lives and therefore seek chiropractic care. It results from abnormalities in the soft tissues – muscles, ligaments, and nerves, as well as in the bone and the joints of the spine. The most common causes that chiropractors identify are soft tissue abnormalities from injury or prolonged wear and tear. In many people it is also the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders and arms. When neck pain is caused by muscle strain, you may have aches and stiffness that spread to the upper arm and forearm. Shooting pain that spreads down the arm into the hand and fingers can be a symptom of a “pinched nerve or nerve entrapment in the neck. When a nerve is “pinched in the neck, numbness, weakness and possibly pain of the hands or arms may occur. Other common reasons people will consult with a chiropractor include whiplash, RSI (repetitive strain injuries) or overuse, degeneration and wear and tear, and postural problems, also headaches and migraines.
How Does the Body Work?
Your body is controlled by your nerve system, much like the electrical wires in your house. In every electrical system you have a circuit breaker box. In that box you have individual circuits that control specific rooms of the house, much like your nerve system controls specific parts of your body. If you were to blow the circuit that leads to the kitchen, nothing in your kitchen would work. You don’t have a proper electrical supply; you have to physically turn the circuit back on. In your body, you have a circuit breaker box known as your spinal cord. It has a series of 24 circuits known as vertebrae (spinal bones). Between each vertebra a nerve exits out to your body sending information and nerve impulses to all your muscles, organs and glands. Much like the electrical wires of your house. Much like a circuit breaker after a thunder storm, if your body suffers a physical stress – like a car accident, fall, or even poor posture, that stress can cause one of these circuits to blow. Headaches, migraines, neck and shoulder pain are all BLARING ALARMS telling you that you have blown a circuit. Chiropractic helps reconnect the circuit!

SPORTS BITES Auckland bowls champ NEIL Fisher is the Auckland men’s lawn bowls champion following an exciting and tense final last month. Fisher, from Howick Bowling Club, and St Heliers’ Barclay Lee fought out a nail biting finish on the greens at Carlton Cornwall. In the first-to-21 final, Lee went out to an 11-4 lead, before Fisher fought strongly to be 15-11 ahead. Barclay came storming back to even up the score at 15-15. With the wind getting up slightly and Lee not adjusting to the change quick enough, Fisher went on to win 21-18. Fisher had qualified for the knockout rounds with victories in all three matches in his section. In the post-section he beat some big names, including Nick Krajancic and NZ Open winner Rob Ashton.

Howick improving in nines By Daniel Silverton
T
HE Howick Hornets are moving up the podium in rugby league nines tournaments. Fresh from finishing third in the Counties Manukau Nines last month, the Hornets were runners-up in the inaugural Auckland Rugby League (ARL) nines held at Whitianga last weekend. A squad of 17, made up of premier, reserves and agegroup players, made the trip, to take on the Papakura Sea Eagles, Northcote Tigers, Otara Scorpions, New Lynn Stags and Manurewa Marlins. “We took down a young team with a lot of new players, says Howick coach Andrew Wharton. “We had six 17- and 18-yearolds. In the first day’s round robin, the Hornets had wins over Manurewa (26-4) and New Lynn (36-12), losses to Papakura (12-28) and Northcote (4-14) and a 16-16 draw with Otara. Wharton says the Hornets went in with a simple game plan: “Shift the ball around and use it. The results qualified Howick for the top-three championship round the following day, along with fellow Fox Memorial premiership sides Papakura and Northcote. Howick were tied in the standings with Otara, but progressed on points for and against. However, the five matches on the opening day had tested Howick’s depth.

“They were sore boys, says Wharton. “We had a few little niggly injuries. Howick started day two with an 8-30 defeat to Papakura, who had earlier beaten Northcote 18-12. This meant the winner of Howick and Northcote in the concluding match of championship
round would proceed to the final. The Hornets led 4-0 at halftime and ran out 12-4 winners. In the decider, Papakura, yet to be beaten in the tournament, started strongly with a try in the opening set, but were reduced to eight men by the sin-binning of captain and star player George
Edwards. Howick were unable to capitalise though, and went into halftime down 0-16. “Papakura had a lot of experienced players and some quicker guys - they had a lot of speed, says Wharton. “We still had a chance of winning. If we could control the ball a bit better and defend well around the ruck, we’d be able to contain them. Howick closed the gap early in the second half through a 30-metre try to young hooker Luke Armiger. Papakura then extended their lead, before Howick’s Jess Keven rounded out the scoring with a well-deserved try. Despite the 10-20 loss, Wharton was pleased with his team’s performances. “The outcome was good for us. The young players all learnt a lot and got a bit of experience out of the competition. “It was more just to get a bit of team bonding and take the boys away. They got a lot out of it. “The competition was run really well. ARL sponsorship and events manager Troy Hardy says the tournament was played in great spirit, and expected it would grow significantly in coming years. “This is the start of something special and from the feedback received we believe the tournament can only grow from here. For Howick, Andy Matano was named the best back, Luke Armiger the best forward, and Jess Keven the top rookie.
