REFOCUSED: Linda Darby-Coring ready to make the most of her Cannes world premier opportunity later this year.

W

hen Linda Darby-Coring read the email announcing that her short film After Wonderland had been selected for a world premier spot at this year’s Cannes Short Film Corner, she could hardly focus! The arts co-ordinator at Pakuranga College couldn’t believe she had received an immediate response to her submission that will now receive global recognition. The Cannes Short Film Corner, part of the 68th Festival de Cannes 2015, is an area where accredited guests and film buyers as well as film festival programmers, producers and sales agents gather to watch selected short films. After Wonderland is based on a

true story of a rebellious youth. The 10-minute film is a realistic social drama with strains from Linda’s own life, skilfully woven into the script to provide a hook for a gripping storyline. “It’s set in the 1960s and has a strong focus on family dynamics, says the talented filmmaker who has made eight short films. “I love creating a world of film and adapting life experiences to it. After Wonderland tells the New Zealand story of an only child, Alice, who struggles hard to stay visible in her dysfunctional family. She falls for the temptations of Dylan who leads her to a kind of wonderland away from the dark truth of her parent’s grim life. As the wrong choices Alice makes begin to unravel and threaten her

life, her distant father emerges from his metaphoric rabbit hole to reconcile the damage. Alice sees this as a thread of hope to help her deal with her pain and grief. “My life experiences helped me to grasp the light and darkness and understand the intensity of life, Linda says. Having previously studied art at Brigham Young University, Hawaii, she is passionate about film making, especially when it comes to design and wardrobe. The mother of three finished her Masters degree in Screen Production at Auckland University in 2014. After Wonderland is her Masters screen project. She is especially thankful for her supervisors at the University of Auckland, Professor Annie Goldson and Dr Shuchi Kothari who men-

tored her, and the university for the equipment she was provided with. “Our cast and crew were incredibly talented, says Linda who now plans to do crowd sourcing so she can travel to the world premier which runs May 13-19. While there she will make the most of the trip by connecting with fellow filmmakers, and will pitch a new script for another short film project in 2016. “I will also be submitting my film to more short film festivals that celebrate films at an international level, she says. “And that’s just the beginning! ■■NOTE: If readers would like to help Linda Darby-Coring travel to Cannes in May, go to Get this Kiwi filmmaker to Cannes at www. pledgeme.co.nz.

The opening of a new state-ofthe-art Nosh Food Market on Pakuranga Rd in July/August this year is expected to create 20 new jobs. The new 630 sqm store opposite the Pakuranga Plaza shopping centre is Nosh’s eighth and will showcase a new layout for the brand. Nosh is a market-style concept in food shopping bringing together butchery, bakery, delicatessen, the greengrocer and focusing on quality fresh food and produce at affordable market prices. Nosh general manager Rod de Vries says he expects the new Nosh will be a flagship store generating some 20 jobs in the area. He says there are two drivers behind Nosh’s move east of the Tamaki River. “Pakuranga Road is a busy gateway to the eastern beaches of Auckland and we see the opening of a branch there as a great opportunity to grow our reach into an area where the residents are typical of Nosh shoppers. “We believe it’s also a great time to reinvigorate the Nosh brand by showcasing a more modern layout and Eastern Bays residents will be first to get a taste of the new face of Nosh. The market is expected to open in July or August subject to progress of the fit-out.

Mall shops targeted Sports and lifestyle stores at Botany Town Centre have been targeted by thieves. Three break-ins have been reported at both the Nike and Hunting and Fishing New Zealand stores during the past month. Botany Town Centre retail manager, Elizabeth Williams says there is an ongoing investigation and the mall is working with police. “We believe them [the thefts] to be part of a pattern of targeted crime in Auckland. We have increased our security measures and are working with retailers to make store-specific improvements to security.

ife’s serendipitous moments come in different forms. While making capsicum jelly with the senior students at Riverhills Primary School an advertisement in the Times popped out at principal Christine Mason. On this occasion, she had asked her pupils to lay out old newspapers on the cooking bench to catch food droppings. Then, while instructing them on how to use garden produce for making capsicum jelly an advert asking for writers to record the life histories of people who led interesting lives, caught her eye. Interest piqued, she asked a student to put the paper aside. Later that day, she couldn’t resist going over the advert and it set the thought processes rolling. Christine silently wondered what life outside the school gates would be like.  â€œAs my mother says of me, ‘she’s been in school since she was five!’.â€? But that advert beckoned. However, after being in the teaching profession for 40 years, Christine says it was a bit daunting to take the leap of faith. “I’ve always felt that I would know when it was the right time to leave.â€? Yet it still took some soul-

searching to her to decide it was time for a change. â€œLast year, I asked myself some hard questions – should I move on or am I going to keep going till I am 65? I didn’t want to be like some others who just like to sit on the seat for years.â€? Christine decided it was time to practise what she had always preached. “I always tell my students that life is about taking risks. Get out of your comfort zone and see what is out there.â€? Finally, she took the plunge. “I had a meeting with the lady who was seeking writers who could tell other people’s stories, especially those who had led very different lives.â€? Christine also felt it was time she paid more attention to her home and hearth. “I have a decent block with animals in Clevedon, which needs looking after and this would fit in perfectly with my new job.â€? She now reckons that the change of lifestyle after being principal for 16 years at Riverhills Primary will mean she doesn’t have to lead such a regimented lifestyle. “I won’t have to be bell-oriented,â€? she smiles. After seamlessly running Riverhills Primary nestled in Waikaremoana Place, Pakuranga Heights, this dedicated principal will hand over the

hoping to see 100 overs, but then our bowlers applied the pressure. It was very exciting; it may have only lasted little more than 50 overs, but at least that gave me a chance to get on with the gardening!, he quips. As the Times went to print, the Black Caps were set to take on Afghanistan, although the team was still to be named. Big Mac [Brendon McCullum] and the boys will play their final pool match on March 13; whether this game proves a Bangladeshi banana skin, or a most welcome ‘black’ Friday remains to be seen. “I would love to see our Pakuranga guys playing but, either way, it certainly would be an upset if Bangladesh won, Mr Parker-Nance says. “However, cricket is a funny old game and anyone can beat anyone on their day; it only takes one ball to claim a wicket and 10 to win a match.

While fans have already been treated to a feast of leather and willow action during the Cricket World Cup, there may yet be a case for fresh pace. Despite the Black Caps three-pronged pace attack making short work of opposition batsmen, Gary Parker-Nance, Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club general manager, says local lads, Kyle Mills and Mitchell McClenaghan may still pitch in. “We would love to see our players selected, but the current guys [Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Adam Milne] have taken their opportunities and deserve to be there, he says. “I’m sure [Mills and McClenaghan] will be

chomping at the bit to get out on the pitch and if the door opens slightly, they’ll be ready and willing to bang it down! With an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the quicks, the Black Caps appear very much on the front foot. However, quality is also waiting in the wings, he adds. “Considering Mitch was one of the fastest to take 50 ODI wickets [equal second, in 23 games], and Kyle has vast experience [170 ODI caps], not being able to crack into the starting team shows how well the others have been performing. “From a strength and depth point of view, it’s quite a luxury for the selectors. Kyle Mills’ brother (chief executive, NZ Cricket Players’ Assoc), Heath Mills adds that

all members of the 15-man squad have parts to play. “It’s always good to see Howick athletes doing well and they are both keen to get out there, but at the moment they are just working hard to help the team wherever they can. “The impressive thing when talking to the guys is that they’re all pretty relaxed and enjoying the experience. However, they are certainly not getting ahead of themselves, which has been good to see. They know there is still a lot of work to be done. Although Mr Parker-Nance has rated the Black Caps’ chances since the beginning, he was most impressed by their recent win over Australia. “I switched on the telly,

Women unite to combat isolation of motherhood A

n enterprising Howick mum Bronwyn Bay has created a new movement, ‘It Takes A Village’ to combat the isolation of motherhood and help East Auckland mums support and connect with each other. After battling post natal depression herself and struggling with feelings of isolation, Bronwyn took the step to create a support network in her area. “The only way to create a community that trusts and looks out for each other is to actually start looking out for each other and trusting each other,” Bronwyn says. The vision of the initiative appealed to many mums with the Facebook group (Village Mums) now at over 700 mothers. “Mums have been able to organise coffee groups and play dates via the group, as well as reaching out to each other for support when in need – it’s been really great to see,” Bronwyn says. According to www.depression. org.nz, depression is more common among females (one in five females, compared to one in eight males) and social isolation is listed as one of the major lifestyle factors that contribute to its cause. “Isolation is quite a problem particularly in cities, because people are often quite disconnected from each other. People don’t know their neighbours and parents are doing it all on their own despite being surrounded by people,” says Bronwyn. As well as creating a space where mums can support each other via the online forum, this go-

getter likes to create events that bring mums together to form new friendships and connections. “We do clothing and toy swaps, seminars on parenting and budgeting and cultural celebrations, too.” In September last year Bronwyn put on a MumsBiz expo to drum up local support for the many mothers in the group who were running in-home businesses. “That was a lot of fun,” she says. “We had a room of 40 mums showcasing their products and services, and they’ve now created their own support network.” Bronwyn currently works full time as an administrator at the University of Auckland and has worked previously as an event co-

ordinator and sales in support. “My skill set involves being able to mobilise people and get things done,” she says. “I’ve been able to extend my ability to be a support person to my community and mums have been starting to open up to me, sharing their deepest fears and heartbreaking struggles.” Listening to the heartaches of her local ‘mum community’ inspired Bronwyn to launch a Mothers Unite Conference due to take place on Sunday, March 15 at the Zen Garden, Whitford. “I wanted to create an event that could bring these heavy hearts together in unity – an event that could help participants see that

they are doing an amazing thing by being mums, that they are always doing their best, that they are worthy of receiving love from themselves and others and how to let go of those crippling expectations and beliefs of never being good enough.” The conference features six speakers sharing their personal stories of struggle and how they rose above them. They will also share tools, advice and knowledge with the mums so they can live more empowered and fulfilling lives. Registration for the conference can be purchased via the Mothers Unite! Website www.mothersunite.net.

The latest quarterly health target results show Counties Manukau District Health Board (DHB) is making good overall progress, says Health Minister Jonathan Coleman. “Counties Manukau DHB is continuing to improve its performance on the Government’s national health targets. These results are a credit to the health professionals in Counties Manukau,” says Dr Coleman. “The latest results show Counties Manukau DHB has continued to deliver a high number of elective surgeries, surpassing the 100 per cent target by 12 per cent. DHBs across the country are focused on reducing waiting times for elective first specialist assessments and treatments, such as hip replacements. Counties Manukau DHB increased its performance on the shorter stays in emergency departments target up to 96 per cent. In primary care, 96 per cent of smokers were offered advice or support on quitting. Results have been reported for the first time on the new, faster cancer treatment health target. “Nationally, two thirds of patients with a high suspicion of cancer received their first treatment within 62 days of referral,” says Dr Coleman. “This is comparable with other countries when they first introduced a similar new target. I know we will continue to see steady improvement towards the target of 90 per cent by June 2017.” The latest health target results can be found at www.health.govt.nz.

withdrawing the money Mr Prasad had said the money was for a family emergency. She said she told him to be careful. CCTV footage of the transaction was played in court.

T

he murder trial of two men accused of burning to death a Dannemora man almost reads like a suspenseful crime novel. Shivneel Shahil Kumar, who turned 21 behind bars last Wednesday, and Bryne Permal, 22, have spent the past week in the Auckland High Court where they faced a series of witness testimonies, mobile text records, forensic evidence and video footage. The pair was charged and arrested with the murder of Shalvin Prasad two weeks after Mr Prasad’s smouldering body was found in McRobbie Road, Franklin on the morning of January 31, 2013. The previous day, Mr Prasad had withdrawn $30,050, his life savings, while Kumar watched. The 21-year-old former Botany Downs Secondary College student worked at the Botany Pak’n Save supermarket in the time leading up to his death.

KEY WITNESSES

Ravindra Prasad Mr Prasad’s father, Ravindra Prasad appeared in court last Tuesday and told the jury how Kumar had repeatedly borrowed from his

Shalvin Prasad

son, extracting more than $8000 since 2010. He said the accused denied ever taking that money which led to the Prasad family pursuing legal action. Shalvin Prasad sent his father a text on the night of his death, saying he would be home at 10.30pm after playing pool in Manukau. He was, in fact, meeting with the coaccused. Later that night Ravindra Prasad checked his son’s bank account and discovered $30,050 missing. He called the police after failing to locate his son. Joanne Galvin Bank teller Joanne Galvin told the court last Tuesday that on

Atina Sila Permal’s work colleague Atina Sila told the jury last Wednesday that Permal had asked him to take an envelope containing more than $300 cash and a bank card for safekeeping. After joking he [Mr Sila] would take some of the money, Mr Sila said Permal ended up giving him most of the cash. CCTV footage of the petrol station where the co-accused allegedly bought petrol to set Mr Prasad alight was also played in court on Wednesday.

Dave Ansted Last Friday Newmarket tattoo artist Dave Ansted told the court that the accused duo eagerly spent $350 each on tribal-type tattoos with Permal returning a week later to spend an additional $400 on an extension. Papatoetoe jewellery store worker Muniappa Gounder also testified to the pair forking out nearly $1000 on jewellery. The trial continues in front of Justice Geoffrey Venning this week.

SEAFARERS: Some of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet during leg three from the United Arab Emirates to China. Photo supplied / Rick Tomlinson

Respite for ocean race crews THE full complement of competitors taking part in the greatest test in world sailing has arrived in Auckland. The Volvo Ocean Race fleet sailed into Waitemata Harbour on February 28, with just eight minutes separating the first three boats. Crews now have less than a week to prepare themselves and their craft for the most treacherous stretch of the race in which they’ll encounter strong winds, mountainous waves, and freezing temperatures. The Auckland stopover is between legs four and five of the eight-leg race, which started in October and will finish in June. In total, the craft will cover a distance of 39,895 nautical miles. Leg four started in Sanya, China on February 8. Spanish syndicate MAPFRE was the first to complete the 5264 nautical mile voyage to the City of Sails, followed by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Dongfeng Race Team. After being lifted onto cradles and stripped of their masts for maintenance on arrival, the boats will be back in the water and fully rigged today. They will be docked at the waterfront until Sunday, with members of the public able

to get up close to the highperformance, 65-foot monohull machines at the race village. The upcoming fifth leg is the longest of the race at 6776 nautical miles, and also one of the most notorious. Crews have to navigate the Roaring Forties, ice and tropical systems and must round the hazardous Cape Horn on their way to Itajai, Brazil. There are six boats still in the running, representing Sweden, China, United Arab Emirates, The Netherlands, USA/Turkey, and Spain. The seventh entry, Denmark’s Team Vestas Wind, skippered

by Kiwi, Chris Nicholson, ran aground during a storm in the Indian Ocean during the second leg. Three New Zealanders are amongst the remaining crews: Dave Swete and Ryan Houston are aboard Team Alvimedica and Daryl Wislang is on Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Each boat has eight sailors, except for the all-woman entry, Team SCA, which can have up to 11. Two crew members must also be younger than 30. This Saturday, an in-port race will be held, before the crews carry on their journey the following day.

Grab your gumboots, buzzy bees and hokey pokey ice cream and head down to Howick Village for some Kiwiana fun, 9am till 1pm this Saturday, March 14. Howick Village is celebrating all the little things that help make New Zealand unique. The Kiwiana Day features a range of fun activities, including live music, dancing and entertainment, face painting, Sammy the Steam train rides and Bingo the Clown for children as well as great shopping for those seeking a bargain. Howick Village Radio is joining the celebrations and will be broadcasting live from Picton Street. In its fourth year, the annual community event is organised by the Howick Village Business Association. Town Centre manager, Jenny Foster says the day is very popular with families and shoppers who enjoy the entertainment, shopping, cafes

and Saturday morning market. As part of the event, shops along Picton Street, Cook Street, Moore Street and Uxbridge Road will compete for the best Kiwiana window display. Shoppers can try their skills in the Kiwiana slang competition in selected retail stores and be in to win dinner for four valued at $200. Three double movie passes are also up for the taking! Place completed entries in the competition boxes at Hot Topic, Spillers Hammer Hardware or the Howick Information Service by 1pm on Saturday. Kiwiana embraces the classic images and items that have given New Zealand its unique character. “It may be an old cookbook, a pair of gumboots or jandals, pictures of sheep, retro caravans or a Pavlova dessert with kiwifruit on top says Mrs Foster. “With these in mind, we’re making Howick Village as Kiwi as!

Room to live comfortably COMFORT is a key element when decorating a living room. Since so much time is spent there watching TV, entertaining friends, or reading, it’s vital to opt for comfortable armchairs and sofas that are as stylish as they are inviting.

We can transform your benchtop & splashback with our Trend Surfaces stone range, along with replacing old cupboard doors with new! Specialising in new kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.

The style of the room determines the style of the furniture. Some armchairs and sofas ďŹ t better in a retro decor, while others have a decidedly contemporary look.

When choosing a chair or sofa, consider the general size of the household occupants. Tall people may need a deeper seat or a higher back. For short people, too high a

back may result in the head being uncomfortably forced forward. No head rest at all may prove wearying in the end. Think about materials too. Leather is ideal because of its strength, durability, ease of maintenance, and timeless beauty. These days, leather textures are more sophisticated and colours come in a wide range of classic and contemporary choices. Matte or glossy ďŹ nishes and ribbing or contrast stitching also make for an abundance of options. However, fabric armchairs certainly have their place.

With a huge variety of materials in solid colours or patterns to choose from, it is easy to use a single chair as a feature, mix and matched with leather or to opt for a full fabric suite. If the room is big enough, consider incorporating a sectional sofa where the various sections can be ďŹ tted together in different ways. Such pieces can often be adapted to awkward spaces. You could also opt for a few light pieces of furniture that adapt to the particularities of the room and provide a beautiful arrangement of colours and fabrics. How you use the living room will

determine the orientation of armchairs and sofas — cluster them around the TV, the ďŹ replace, or to foster conversation.

For armchairs and sofas to be comfortable they should have a solid back which is sufďŹ ciently upright to give good back support. They must also have a seat that is not too low and armrests ďŹ rm enough to promote good posture.

Vanilla would have been fine, but it was decadent chocolate that took one Mount Eden couple’s home from standard to stunning.

It has been life-changing, adds Kirsty. “People can come in and out of the kitchen easily now and my husband and I don’t bump into each other quite so much anymore. It’s more enjoyable, less frustrating and everything fits and matches.

Kirsty Wilson and Bill Dyall were on the hunt for a new kitchen after deciding the price of moving was too high. “Our home had been built in 2004 but we found the kitchen wasn’t terribly good quality, says Kirsty. “The cupboards had become water damaged from just normal wear and tear and looked like Weet Bix! An awkward peninsula jutting out at the front added to their dilemma, essentially closing the kitchen off. A library manager accustomed to research, Kirsty spent a couple of years searching for the right kitchen company to remedy these problems. “I found that Jag had the best website, she says. “It was the most helpful as far as advice went. The products were all grouped together and I didn’t get the impression that a kitchen would cost bags and bags of money. It turns out Bill was in agreement with his partner as someone at his workplace had a Jag kitchen and could vouch for its quality. So off the couple traipsed from Mt Eden to Jag Kitchens in Botany’s Danske Mobler Home Centre, meeting designer Liz Martin.

“And we even have a whole drawer for the cats! Times photos Wayne Martin

Jag designer Liz Martin (right) with Kirsty Wilson who is delighted that this spacious kitchen is everything she wanted.

“She had some really good ideas, says Kirsty. “For example we would never think of putting the wall oven on the other side of the kitchen and she helped us turn a narrow corner into an on-bench pantry. Liz says having a few variations allowed the couple to explore and decide on elements that showcased their personalities. “It’s a kitchen that has been opened up completely with a lot of depth and character. And that’s just the beginning. Dark brown woodgrain cabinetry and a reflective composite stone bench with speckled detailing and waterfall end combined with curved, dark taupe metallic handles to create an elegant first look.

But the devil is in the detail. A deep Blanco Silgranit sink, two revolving Mondo corners, separate spice and oil drawers and a standalone overhead cabinet sporting an effortless Aventos folding flap by Blum, further emphasise there is much more than meets the eye. Best of all, the kitchen is an extension of the house itself. The dark drapes are a perfect match for the cabinetry, and the rustic styling of the dining room create a fetching contrast thanks to a dining table made

from recycled wharf timber, vintage suitcases as well as an antique-style cabinet. “The dark colour scheme marries exceptionally well with the originally white house, says Kirsty. “It’s such a light house and a lot of sun streams through the windows overlooking the garden. Of course, there’s no ignoring the functionality of the kitchen either. “It’s such a good design that you

Natural wood furniture and flooring with soft area rugs will offer a combination of smooth and fluffy textures, which is always easy on the eyes. You could even be daring and add touches of fur, lace, and wool. These materials are unusual, but they add cosiness to a room.

Be particularly careful when choosing the furniture, flooring, bedspread, and window coverings; make sure they add warmth to the decor but don’t result in a clash of colours and restlessness. For example, a padded headboard gives a comfortable look and cushions and soft throws invite relaxation. Another great way to add warmth to a room is to use ceiling to floor curtains and draperies which cover the entire width of the wall.

For the bed, create multiple layers with covers, quilt, bedspread or plump duvet, and cushions. Scattering a few rugs on the floor is another great idea or place a fabriccovered bean bag where it’s easy to just flop down with a book and a blanket.

Depending on the base colours, add touches of yellow, burnt orange, or warm red as an accent to softer neutral tones but if you have opted for a deep or vibrant feature wall, use light, neutral shades with touches of the base colour to soften the overall effect. I love Autumn with the beautiful vibrant hues and the crunch of the leaves underfoot. With such a hot summer, I think most will welcome the cooler evenings. We are excited to host our first informal seminar for this year on ‘Thinking Ahead to Your Golden Years’ being held at the Highland Park Library on Wednesday 25 March from 10am-12noon. Various experts will give tips and advice to help with your decision to move from the family home into retirement living. On hand will be a legal person to chat about issues such as your rights, wills, POA; a financial person to discuss investments, managing your money; a health expert; and Dannemora Gardens to discuss the village, amenities, etc. We would love for you to join us. Please RSVP to Suzanne on 027 494 2405 by Friday 20 March. We have had great results on the homes we have sold recently, and continue to have a steady stream of new listings. See below for some new properties on the market. Remember, if you are looking at selling your home, our fees are extremely good value for money at 2.95% + gst up to $390,000, thereafter 1.95% + admin fee + gst. We get a lot of positive feedback from potential vendors on our unique marketing package, which includes a free TV Advert when you list your property with us.

BUYERS CHOICE

Real Estate with Integrity

“Choice in the under $500,000 category remained strong. At the same time, sales in the million dollar plus category in February, at 174, remained constant with sales numbers in January, he says. “Property selling in the $750,000 to $1m category was in high demand. [This consists of ] properties often located in well-established suburbs which have older, quality homes where value can be added through remodelling and renovation.

Goddard out to do better By Daniel Silverton

Nominate the region’s best By Daniel Silverton

T

HE second annual Howick Sports Awards are set to continue on what was a successful inaugural event. The awards were initiated by Howick Local Board to raise the profile of sport and sports clubs in the Howick ward and recognise the success and dedication of athletes and volunteers. “With the largest population by ward in the Auckland region, some of the best sporting facilities and passionate and successful sportspeople living and competing in the area, it seemed like a fantastic opportunity for the board to establish an annual Sports Awards event to celebrate sporting excellence,” says John Spiller, Howick Local Board’s sport and recreation portfolio holder. The awards process and ceremony were organised by Counties Manukau Sport. Around 100 nominations were put forward across the 10 categories, and more than 150 people attended last year’s awards night at Pakuranga United Rugby Club.

“I thought that the inaugural event was very well supported and attracted a good cross section of codes,” says Mr Spiller. “There was a high calibre of nominations, very deserving winners and the event ran smoothly with everyone having a great time.” Barry George, of Counties Manukau Sport, says: “The inaugural awards created an opportunity to see recognition at a local level. “The standard of finalists was very high and as with most sport-

ing awards choosing the winners was not an easy task for the selection panel.” The board and Counties Manukau Sport received positive feedback regarding last year’s first hit out, from both awardees and attendees. “We certainly hope for a larger event this year and that some of the codes that weren’t represented last time get involved by way of creating opportunities for their stand out players, coaches and

administrators to get nominated,” says Spiller. On the back of Howick’s initiative, the Times understands the Papakura Local Board is implementing its own awards. “I hadn’t heard about the Papakura event, however, it’s great that other boards should run their own sports award nights and if the Howick Local Board’s endeavours have helped to motivate and pave the way for them that’s just wonderful.”

Selina Goddard is seeking redemption. The 20-year-old, formerly of Howick, is competing in the World Junior (under-25) Bowls Championships at her home club, Broadbeach, on Australia’s Gold Coast this week. Goddard represented New Zealand at the tournament last year, placing fourth in her singles and mixed pairs sections and missing out on the post-section by one place. Of the four Kiwis who were selected last year, only Goddard and her pairs partner are making a repeat appearance. “I was surprised because I didn’t think I would get picked to play in this again,” she told the Times. “There are so many up-an-coming young players in New Zealand now, I thought they would give someone else a chance. “I was really happy to get given the opportunity.” The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, in the women’s triples, has a steely drive to better last year’s result at the world juniors. “I wasn’t too happy with my performance last year and I know what I need to do to improve. “I’m going to be out to get in this time.”

Unpredictable meets explosive By Daniel Silverton

IXED martial arts (MMA) competitor Ev Ting is about to knuckle down in the biggest fight of his life. Ting, of Pakuranga, is fighting in this Friday’s Age of Champions event in Malaysia, promoted by One Championship, Asia’s largest MMA organisation. The 25-year-old is taking on Cary Bullos, of the Philippines. It will be the 11th fight of Ting’s professional career, with eight wins and two losses so far, after going unbeaten as an amateur. The method of Ting’s victories have been varied, with four knockouts or TKOs, one submission and three by way of decision. His losses were via submission and decision. “My style is very unorthodox, which makes it hard for anyone to train and compete against me, Ting told the Times. “My fighting is unpredictable and most times off-beat to my opponents, and I like to strike very hard. Bullos has a seven win and two loss record, with none of his fights going the distance. “My opponent is a very dangerous fighter, says Ting. “His strength of being wild and explosive will also be his weakness. As well as having similar records, the featherweight pair is evenly matched physically. Bullos stands at 1.7 metres and weighs 61 kilograms compared with Ting’s 1.72m and 65kg. The bout is a pivotal one for Ting, who is unbeaten in his two ONE FC

MMA, Emelianenko also nearly caused him to throw in the towel. “The worst and scariest moment for me so far in MMA was seeing Fedor and Anderson Silva losing for their first time, he recalls. “This was a shock and it made me think about retiring because of it. “Then after a few weeks of digesting, It just made me realise that this young sport is always changing so it was either I evolve or dissolve. Ting, who trains at Auckland MMA in Pakuranga, has remained in Malaysia since his last fight, and undergone a testing build-up ahead of facing Bullos. “My preparation has been one of my best yet for all my fights. “I have worked with a lot of different fighters and coaches including travelling to Vietnam to train fulltime with world class athletes. “So basically my fight camp started a long time ago, now it is just a matter of being smart and embracing the grind. Stadium Putra, also the venue of Ting’s last fight, has a capacity of 16,000 people, with Ting and Bullos squaring off sixth on the nine-fight card. “It is an amazing atmosphere, especially when you drop your opponent and everyone is screaming, says Ting. “All the hard-work is done and it is kill or be killed. No one will be able to help me in that cage but myself. Ting’s coach, Auckland MMA’s Hamish Robertson, is confident of the result going Ting’s way. “I’m expecting Ev to finish him in the first or second round [of three], by knockout or submission.
