Flat Bush resident is urging locals to be alert after her handbag was snatched from her lap while she was sitting in her car. Sushma Sharma was sitting in the driver’s seat while parked on Arronmore Drive outside Texture Cafe in Flat Bush last Wednesday evening when a man opened the passenger door and grabbed her handbag strap. The man, who is described as aged late 20s or early 30s, around 182cm tall and muscular with a round and chubby unshaven

face, wrestled the bag out of Ms Sharma’s hands before fleeing in a grey/green coloured SUV which was parked with its engine running behind Ms Sharma’s car. Ms Sharma was out with her 9-year-old daughter and 2-yearold niece who had gone back into the shop at the time the bag snatch happened. Ms Sharma has been left shaken after the “terrifying” incident and says she no longer feels safe in the community and in her home where she has lived happily for the past few years. “He [the offender] was so confident...the community is not safe,”

she said, “The public needs to be aware and alert.” She said a substantial amount of cash and jewellery was inside the bag when it was stolen, as well as her and her daughter’s passports, chequebooks and her iPhone 6 amongst other valuable information. Ms Sharma is praising the work of Ormiston Police who she says responded swiftly and took her statement. Police area prevention manager Senior Sergeant Steve Richards says people should avoid carrying large sums of cash on their person if possible. If it is necessary to do

so then people should be aware of their surroundings and who is around when approaching their vehicle. “If you notice anyone around who seems suspicious then pop back into a store and watch them from the store. If you need to, call police on 111 to report any suspicious behaviour,” he said. He says it’s also a good idea to lock your doors as soon as you get into the vehicle, or simply unlock the driver’s door if possible, and to avoid placing the handbag anywhere that would be easily reached by a would-be offender.

They have targeted a five kilometre radius from Chapel Road encompassing Ti Rakau Drive in the north, through East Tamaki, Flat Bush, Clover Park and Otara.

s Akshay Kakkar was asked more frequently by his parents to pick up takeaways, especially when guests arrived, he decided there had to be a better way which might also earn some money. The result is a start-up on-line food delivery service, Quick Jandal, which has been formed by Akshay and three other Year 13 Ormiston College students. The business is based on a mobile app through which users will be able to place an order from one of Quick Jandal’s signed up restaurants or takeaway outlets. The venture is part of the nationwide Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. The team will take part in a Dragons Den event at the end of this month and hopes to launch the app at the start of next month (June). Akshay, who is the group’s chief executive, says he thought it would be convenient and make his life easier if there was a service that could do his parents’ takeaway pick-ups for him.

So far the business has signed up 10 restaurants covering a variety of cuisines including Thai, Indian, and pizza. Operating hours will be 10am10pm. The team expects to hire delivery people who will drive their mopeds, but they will also personally do deliveries in the weekends or when they get time off school. Akshay says Quick Jandal hopes to continue the business operations after the Young Enterprise programme ends in November.

Tyres slashed overnight on Pakuranga street C

hatsworth Crescent residents had their Sunday morning plans disrupted as they awoke to discover many cars on the Pakuranga Heights street had been the victim of tyre slashing overnight. Roy Dormer’s car was one of those targeted in the event which he said was “kind of uncalled for”. It was an unwelcome reception for Mr Dormer, who has only lived in the street for a week. He was driving to church in the morning when he heard a funny noise and discovered one of his tyres had gone flat. Upon closer

inspection, he discovered the tyre wasn’t just punctured, but had been finely cut. “I thought I’d been targeted [because] the car was on my property inside the gate line. I called my flatmate and his car had been done then he looked down the street and most of the cars had been done.” While only one tyre on Mr Dormer’s car was slashed, other residents weren’t quite so lucky. “One property had three cars on it and two tyres on each car [were done]” said Mr Dormer. “I’ve lived in the area before and never had any issues.”

He said the incident has left residents “pretty uneasy” about leaving their cars parked on the street. Another Chatsworth Crescent resident estimated around $2500 worth of damage had been caused from what he saw, plus the inconvenience of not having a car to get to work. He said the unknown culprit remaining on the loose is unnerving. Area prevention manager Senior Sergeant Steve Richards said Ormiston police are aware of a “number of vehicles” that had their tyres slashed on Chatsworth Crescent in

the early hours of Sunday morning. “We have not had any similar reports in other areas that we are aware of at this stage however this type of behaviour is unacceptable and obviously very concerning to residents.” Snr Sgt Richards said frontline police staff were aware of the incidents and would be carrying out extra patrols in the area. Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour should contact police immediately on 111. Information can also be provided to the Ormiston Police Station on 2502800.

Watercare launches pipe inspections By Laura Brookes Watercare has launched an inspection of public and private wastewater pipes from every house in Mellons Bay in an effort to reduce wet weather overflows. The work is part of an Auckland-wide programme to decrease the volume of stormwater entering the wastewater network, which is a major contributor to wet-weather overflows. Since September last year, wet-weather overflows have been problematic for Mellons Bay residents who have been waiting on Watercare to take action. In heavy rain, the amount of stormwater that drains from an average single roof is the equivalent to the wastewater flows from more than 40 households, said Watercare network manager Anin Nama. Residents will be notified via a flyer dropped into their letterbox ahead of time to let them know what to expect. Watercare teams will be

testing wastewater pipes, stormwater downpipes and gully traps from around 2000 houses over the next month using a white, cold, non-toxic smoke to pinpoint problems. Mr Nama said teams will also carry out a visual property-by-property inspection looking for faults or defects, as there are instances when smoke may not identify the problem. Last week, 15 faults were found across 200 properties where a completed inspection had taken place. Any houses identified as being non-compliant or with illegal connections will receive a letter from Watercare and Auckland Council to the property owner requesting the problem to be fixed as soon as possible. Defect notices will come out within two weeks of inspection, said a Watercare representative. The council will then seek a statement proving the repairs have been done, or alternatively the property

owner can provide council with a photograph as evidence of completion. Watercare representative Maxine Clayton said she hopes to see property owners step up to do their part toward fixing the problem. “People tend to think council should do it all...but everyone has a part to play in this,” she said. Within the month, a new level sensor will also be installed inside a manhole at Mellons Bay beach to provide Watercare with forewarning when an overflow is about to occur.

By Laura Brookes He was a well-respected police officer, family man and a pillar in his community. Forty two-year-old officer Jeremy Field died at his Beachlands home from natural causes on Sunday, April 30. He leaves behind wife Jane Field, who is also a police officer, 12-yearold daughter Faith and 10-year-old son Preston. More than 1000 people gathered at Elim Christian Centre East in Botany on Thursday, May 4, to farewell Mr Field in a ceremony that included a rousing haka. The service was followed by a private cremation. Counties Manukau east area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller, who spoke at the funeral, said the dedicated officer was an integral part of the local community. He was a parent representative on the Somerville Intermediate School BOT and had links with many local sporting teams, including Pakuranga Jaguars Rugby League Community Sports Club. Building trust between police and the community, particularly

with teenagers, was something Mr Field was especially skilled at and passionate about, she said. “He was a fantastic officer, involved in all facets of the community.” “He will be missed.” Mr Field joined the police force in 1998 at the age of 23 years and graduated from the Royal NZ Police College the following year. During his career in the police force, he worked mostly with Counties Manukau east, covering Howick and Ormiston. For the past 12 months, he worked as officer in charge of the Counties Manukau district custody unit. A death notice in the New Zealand Herald written by his devastated family paid tribute to the much-loved husband and father. “Taken far too early. Thank you for sharing your life with me, you are my soul mate and I will love you forever. You were always there for us, you were our rock. A loving and giving husband and father. We miss you so much. Love always, your wife Jane and our beautiful children Faith and Preston. xx”

China’s most wanted are living right here By NICK KRAUSE

C

hina’s anti-corruption authority has released the names and details of their most wanted suspects – and three are said to come from this area. The information includes the names, gender, ID card numbers, former titles, suspected crimes, dates of arrival in the country and travel document numbers of each person, according to a statement from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI). That office is in charge of fugitive repatriation and asset recovery under the central anti-corruption coordination group. The information includes possible hiding places of 22 corruption suspects who have fled overseas. Half of the 22 have fled to the US, New Zealand and Australia, Xinhua news agency reported. Four of the fugitives are believed to be living at Auckland addresses – one man allegedly in Cockle Bay, another man in Half Moon Bay and one woman in Eastern Beach. The

fourth suspect is said to be in One Tree Hill. The three people sought from this area include Jiang Lei of Cockle Bay (second on the most wanted list), Chen Xingming of Half Moon Bay (fifth) and Xuan Xiuying of Eastern Beach (tenth). A police spokesperson told the Times it will not comment. “In general terms we can say that New Zealand Police is part of Interpol – the global network of law enforcement jurisdictions,” the spokesperson said.

“On occasion New Zealand Police conducts enquiries on behalf of overseas jurisdictions. We do not however comment on matters involving investigations being run by any overseas law enforcement jurisdiction.” Meanwhile, Lei, the CCDI claims, is a former executive deputy president and secretary-general of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and former President of Automobile Sub-Council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT). It says he

is suspected of embezzlement and allegedly took advantage of his position with the CCPIT to transfer large amounts of public funds of the organisation into private accounts of his relatives for property purchases. It says he fled to New Zealand on in April. Xingming is said to be a former director of the strategic research and planning section of China Power Corporation and is suspected of misappropriation of public funds. It claims he transferred large amounts of public funds of

Serious crash in Flat Bush One person was seriously injured following a five-car crash on Saturday, May 6. Police and emergency services attended the serious crash in Flat Bush. They were called at 8:30pm evening after a five car collision at the intersection of Te Irirangi Drive and the company to the private accounts of persons relating to him. He is believed to have come to New Zealand in June 2002. Xiuying, the only woman among the four suspects said to be in New Zealand, is listed as a former director of the Zhuhai Jinglian operation branch of the Guangzhou subsidiary of Nanfang Securities Company. She is alleged to have misappropriated public funds and concealed overseas deposits. CCDI claims Xiuying, when serving as director of the Zhuhai branch for securities trading of Guangdong Trust Investment Company of the Agriculture Bank of China, instigated accounting staff not to record large amounts of funds and diverted these funds to the company

Ormiston Road in Flat Bush. One person was reported to have critical injuries and was transported to hospital. The intersection was closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit investigates. Police said investigations are continuing. under her control. She later allegedly gained enormous profits from selling shares of the company under her control. CCDI says she came to New Zealand in August 2002. The South China Morning Post reported that China launched its antigraft operation “Sky Net” in 2015 to tackle corruption, track down overseas suspects and bust underground banks. On April 17, the 40th person on the list of China’s 100 most wanted corrupt fugitives was brought to justice, it reported. By the end of March 2017, the “Sky Net” operation had brought 2873 people who had fled overseas to justice. A total of 365 people are still at large and 581 others remain missing, the Post said.

Silver medal for young butcher at Aussie comp By Laura Brookes

H

e put his knives on the table for his store and country and walked away victorious. Beachlands resident Daniel Johnson has been awarded the silver medal for overall performance at the Lifeline Young Butchers competition in Perth, Australia on April 23. He competed as the New Zealand representative after being nominated by Retail Meat New Zealand. The 22-year-old newly qualified butcher was given three hours for meat manipulation with an additional 30 minutes to cook and present a dish. He was competing against two butchers from the UK and five from Australia in the charity event designed to raise

money for Lifeline, providing support for people living with mental illnesses. “It was life changing and the greatest experience of my life... it was mind-blowing at

the time,” said Daniel. “I wasn’t going over there for fun – I went with a focused mind, and to represent my country and my store to the best of my ability.”

He’s worked in the butchery trade for five years now, starting out as an assistant at a privately owned company and most recently joining the team at New World Howick in late 2015, where he completed his apprenticeship through Foodstuffs. The keen butcher knows a thing or two about the competition scene, too. In 2016, he placed runner up in the Competenz Apprentice Butcher of the Year competition and joined the judges table at the Devro Preliminary Finals for the Devro Sausage of the Year competition in October. This year, he competed in the Meatstock Butcher Wars, and looks forward to showcasing his skills further in the future.

Uni snatch late victory Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s (PURC) premiers are rueing missed opportunities after going down 27-29 to University at the weekend. It is the side’s first loss of the season. PURC’s director of rugby and premier coach Pita Alatini said: “It’s always heart-breaking to lose a game on a final play but it’s fair to say we had more than enough opportunities to win the game. The key for us is to learn quickly of our areas of work ons and get onto them for the week before we hit a determined East Tamaki team who will be desperate after their loss to Otahuhu.”

Teens dig deep to lend helping hand By Laura Brookes

I

t was a bluebird day, and quite frankly, the kind of weather you’d expect would send teenagers on holiday flocking to the local beach. Instead, 38 students joined seven Rotarians at Sunnyhills Primary School to give the school a makeover – courtesy of Rotary Pakuranga in partnership with Pakuranga College’s Interact Club and Rotaract Pakuranga. Over the course of a few hours, the groups repainted two coats on the school fence and lay mulch around new gardens before winter sets in. Rotaract president and

civil engineering student, Alex De Guzman, said she had interesting conversations over the course of the day with Interact students who were curious about university. Co-presidents of the Interact Club, Crystal Leung and Sam Chen, credited Interact as a fantastic platform providing students with opportunities to help and serve within the community – some of whom attended Sunnyhills and were keen to give back. The sentiment was echoed by event organiser and Pakuranga Rotary member Sylvie Wilkinson. “With so much talk about the current selfish teens glued to devices, this will-

ing community service is quite refreshing and delightful,” she said. When Mrs Wilkinson discovered the school needed

garden work done, she thought the school holidays would be a perfect time to bring the groups together for a combined working

bee, and invited Rotarians to assist on the day by providing a little know-how. “It’s the first time we’ve done a project like this with all three levels – school, uni and oldies. The thing that delighted me so much was the willingness of the two groups of young people to give up a day of their precious holidays and get out there to help others. We read so much about this age group having their thumbs permanently attached to some type of device, so to have this many of them here working hard and getting grubby should serve as a comfort and a joy to the older folk in our community.” Sunnyhills’ Dean of

Learning Sue Venville expressed her gratitude on behalf of the school and said they were “so grateful” for the work that had been done that day. The gratitude was mutual, said Mrs Wilkinson, who spoke of how delightful it was to work in collaboration with the school. “Sunnyhills has been wonderful over the working bee. They sent us all their Health & Safety briefing, the Principal emailed her thanks all the way from Korea, the PTA brought us morning tea and the caretaker was there to guide us all. It is very gratifying to pull out all stops for such a well run and appreciative school.”

Do you understand the concepts of financial planning and management? It’s a topic Albert Kwok believes should be understood better. He’s preparing to release his ‘guide to personal financial planning and management’ later in the month. The 70-page guide highlights important areas of the financial and management industry, covering aspects such as insurance, retirement and investment, as well as teaching people about managing cash-flow. “Many websites these days don’t really tell you how these areas work,” Kwok said. “I want to give people an easy read, teaching how different areas of finance and management link with one another.” Kwok also said he’s been working on the book for just about 3 years, taking into account his 35 years of experience from practicing insurance. “I’ve handed the guide to two groups for feedback: peers in the industry and people who have no clue about the subject. The feedback has been very good.” The book will be launched on May 27, held in the Botany Library between 12pm and 2pm.

Colin: That’s not on By Farida Master

N

inety-year-old Colin Stonex is in shock after having a nasty fall caused by loose gravel chips on the newly sealed Kilkenny Drive in Dannemora. His neighbour Tweety Tang spotted him sitting on the footpath with blood trickling down his face, hands and knees. Ms Tang and the lawn mowing man working on Mr Stonex’s section at the time called for an ambulance and rushed him to hospital. Ms Tang, who lives on Kilkenny Drive, says this was an accident waiting to happen. “I was afraid that someone would be badly hurt ever since Auckland Transport did a bad job of resurfacing a long patch of Kilkenny Drive in the month of March,” she says. “It was done on a stretch that was smooth and didn’t need it at all. They have put chip seal over the old asphalt without sealing the chips properly.” When Ms Tang called Auckland Council on April 10 to complain about the “half-done job”, she was upset to hear that the road inspectors had passed it saying it’s complete. “That’s not on!” she says. “Our patch of the road from 110-211 Kilkenny Drive looks terrible. “There are old people moving on mobility scooters, children on their push bikes, motorists who have had cracked windscreens and

chipped paint caused by flying chips and pedestrians being injured.” Outraged, Ms Tang put a note in letterboxes asking if residents down the road were happy with the resealing and if something should be done about it. Another resident, Di Silke, suggested that they circulate a petition which has secured around 250 signatures. It will be presented to the council. “There is a significant increase of traffic noise and loose stones causing safety hazards for cyclists and children going to Point View School,” Mrs Silke said. “We want Auckland Transport to pour hot mix to smoothen out the road.” “Colin is a very able bodied 90-year-old and it was a shame to see him badly injured. We don’t want more accidents like these to happen again.” Auckland Transport spokesman Mark Hannan said this

section of Kilkenny Drive was been resealed in accordance with Auckland Transport road resurfacing guidelines and AT was satisfied with the performance of the new chip seal surface. “The existing asphaltic concrete surface was completed in 1997 and was in need of resurfacing to keep the sealed surface waterproof and maintain good skid resistance,” he said. Mr Hannan said resurfacing roads with chip seal is common practice throughout New Zealand and is endorsed by the NZ Transport Agency. “The Auckland Transport road resurfacing guidelines require that low vehicle volume residential roads that were previously paved with asphaltic concrete at the time of development are resurfaced with chip seal,” he said. “Some extra noise and loose chip is to be expected from a new chip seal surface and this usually diminishes over time. The new surface has been swept frequently by the contractor until bedding down.” ■■ After the story was published online Mr Hannan said in a post: “Auckland Transport had no idea about the extent of Mr Stonex’s injuries from his accident. As a result we provided technical information about the work on Kilkenny Drive. We have now asked the Times for Mr Stonex’s details so we can offer any assistance we can in his recovery.”

Good in the Hood gets underway Kiwis will help address needs in their neighbourhoods, when they vote in Z Energy’s Good in the Hood this month. Good in the Hood is a community funding programme that awards more than a million dollars every year to around 800 groups doing good for people or the environment in the area around their local Z. Every Z service station has chosen four groups to support in 2017 and will share $4000 between them. Locals will determine what percentage of the funding goes to each group by voting with an orange token each time they shop at Z in May. Kennerley Retail Investments community champion, Melanie Kennerley, told the Times the need that each group is addressing will be labelled on the voting booths, so locals can see the impact the funding will have. “Some community groups have explicit needs they are seeking funding for eg keeping community nurses on the road for Totara Hospice,” she said. “For all groups, it assists them in doing the amazing work they do in the community on a daily basis.” Hunua MP Andrew Bayly is right behind the programme. “These are all well deserving charities who work hard for us all,” he said. “I particularly want to acknowledge Wayne and Melanie Kennerley, the retailers of these Z Stations, who enable four hours of community service a month for each of their stations and their ongoing generous support of the community.” ■■ Visit www.z.co.nz/goodinthehood

Niue principal inspired after visit to college By Laura Brookes

t’s not every day Howick College has the privilege of hosting the principal of Niue High School, but last week, Charles Ioane landed in New Zealand for exactly that reason. Accompanied by careers advisor and PE teacher Moira Jackson, Mr Ioane was hosted by the school as part of an educational support and mentoring programme, where he shadowed Howick College principal Iva Ropati for a week. It was an action-packed week, he said, as he witnessed how Mr Ropati leads the school community and gained a better understanding of the New Zealand education system. “It’s information overload, but it’s been very good. “When we were first asked to come, I couldn’t see it. [Back home] we have 200 students, 30 staff... this school has so much more. I couldn’t see the benefit that could come out of it - but I’m very happy we did come. It’s different, but the teaching and learning is the same, and we’re prioritising what we can take out of it.” In Niue, Mr Ioane’s family are well-known for being

teachers. With an extended legacy of education in the family line, he said it was natural to step into the role. Putting his hand up for principal was a different challenge, meaning he would need to step back from teaching in the classroom, but he’s taken it in his stride with a goal to do the very best he can by his students and staff. “[When I first became principal], I wanted to build on what was already there and make improvements where we could; not tear down what’s been done before. It’s also our aim to instil in [students] a sense of wanting to come back and invest in the

island long-term. “It’s been amazing seeing the opportunities available for students here. It’s inspiring. “[In Niue] we do the best we can with the resources we have, and it’s always about the students – giving them opportunities to be what they want to be. That big picture is the most rewarding for me.” Mrs Jackson, who also has a strong family history in teaching, said the high level of respect students have for teachers is a “very special” factor of her work back home. She echoed Mr Ioane’s gratitude for the week spent with Howick College staff – particularly the careers

All of the above is at no cost to you.

The Hauraki Gulf is next in line to come under the same type of ‘power sharing structure’ as the Tupuna Maunga Authority (the group controlling access to the volcanic cones , One Tree Hill, Mt Eden etc). I refer to the Sea Change Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan which could also give effective control to Iwi over all other users of the Hauraki Gulf - commercial and recreational fishers, transport operators, sailors, kayakers, swimmers, marine farmers and even event organisers. While the objectives to address the underlying causes of habitat degradation, poor water quality and fisheries depletion of the Hauraki Gulf are admirable, the devil is in the detail. Underlying the whole scheme is a 50/50 co-management proposal of localised areas, called Ahu-Moana marine zones. These zones could cover every inch of the coastline of the Hauraki Gulf and its islands, extending from mean high water mark out 1km. The plan contains a number of alarming proposals. For instance, it recommends that the Ahu Moana committees would eventually have the power to prohibit recreational and commercial fishing in ‘their’ zone, wholly or partially over any area, and over any or

advisor, who she credited for managing a “very dynamic” role and doing her part to set students up for successful futures. With hopes to implement a careers programme at Niue High School, Mrs Jackson said there are many aspect of the college’s careers department she can glean inspiration from. Howick College principal Mr Ropati considered it a pleasure hosting the two educators, and said he learned a lot from their expertise. “Our context may be different but in the end we are both searching [for] leadership strategies that work best to accelerate student learning. “He shared some highly successful strategies for dealing with special needs students. In his school he had a student with Downs Syndrome and explained how he integrated the student into the wider school without any labelling or deficit stereotyping. The student was completely embraced and accepted just as any other student would be in their school. “I found the conversations very beneficial and look forward to future interactions between our two schools in the future.”

all fish species, on the basis of cultural values (i.e. no need for scientific evidence). Clearly, both the city and the gulf need to be protected from exploitation, pollution and over-development but the public also needs protection from an undemocratic power structure. However, in addition to implementation of the plan, there are Treaty Settlements taking place involving at least 19 iwi and hapu which are expected to result in even more 50/50 iwi-council/Crown cogovernance arrangements. The political landscape is indeed changing. Imagine the commercial value of controlling the whole Hauraki Gulf, its islands and foreshore. Arthur Moore, Pakuranga

Safeguard village character Thank you for publishing our letter to the Howick Local Board calling for them to ensure that the Howick Centre Plan, which puts so much emphasis on a “character and community village”, includes a description of what the village character really means. We are sure that many residents do not see hav-

ing 18-metre-high buildings within the geographical boundaries covered by the plan as the village character they wish the board to promote. We are still waiting for a formal response from the board. We have, however, received informal support from some board members. Our association is also calling for the board to require the final plan to include action plans to achieve the goals that acknowledge the value of views from Stockade Hill and which support maintaining an appropriate scale that reflects the village character. We have asked them to ensure that priorities are evidence-based, and that adequate cost-benefit studies have been completed. For instance, what evidence is there for widespread community support to demolish the Information Centre in order to create a village square, and what will be the costs and impact? Finally we are asking the board to ascertain what added value council officials can add to future development that is not available from local citizens. Any commercial board of directors would ask such questions. The principles of good governance requires the Howick Local Board to do the same. L D Slee Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers

Young swimmers inspired after camp A

group of top young local swimmers has returned invigorated and motivated from a national swim camp. Six youngsters from Howick and Pakuranga qualified for a place in the 36 member Jetstar Super Swim Squad Camp held at the weekend in Auckland. Coaches at the Camp included former Olympian and Commonwealth Games swimmers Dean Kent, Steven Kent and Andrew McMillan along with Paralympians Nikita Howarth and Rebecca Dubber. “Being around these enthusiastic and motivated budding young swim stars is a really inspiring experience for myself and my fellow coaches. If this is the next wave of swimming talent, New Zealand is in good hands,” said head coach Dean Kent. Leanne Asiata, mother of Danielle and Samuel Asiata, said: “The camp has been amazing and the coaches are awesome They are definitely motivating the kids to keep swimming!” Meanwhile Ella Crowe

This gives us all far more options to invest in growthfocussed policies and projects We are building more infrastructure like schools, hospitals, housing, public transport and roads. With the $11b of new spending in new capital infrastructure recently announced by Steven Joyce, we will be able to invest further into the country’s progression. This news is very welcome, and I will be pushing hard for important projects for our area like AMETI and East-West Link to see greater investment going forward. Steven Joyce also signalled new lower debt target – to reduce net debt to between 10 and 15 per cent of GDP by 2025. And although our debt to

In two weeks, Minister of Finance, Steven Joyce will be delivering his first budget speech. Recent announcements on Budget 2017 have shown that he is following closely in the footsteps of his predecessor, Bill English. He is focused towards delivering a budget surplus, to ensuring stronger economic growth for New Zealand, and to improve the lives of all Kiwis. New Zealand has now changed from being a place people wanted to leave, to a place that Kiwis want to return to. And we all want to ensure people continue to return home. It was not that long ago that we were running a budget deficit of $18 billion as we maintained Government services during challenging global times. However, hard work around the country has seen

A total of 137,000 new jobs were created in the past 12 months, and unemployment has fallen to 4.9 per cent in the March 2017 quarter. Job growth continues to be faster than population growth. Wages also grew by 2.1 per cent over the year, taking the average annual wage to $58,935. With a strong economy and low net debt, we will be able to respond to whatever the future has in store for us. New Zealand will have the capacity to absorb not just one but a couple of big shocks at once if we need to.

Success story for Shakespeare students By Laura Brookes

tage blood, ominous scenes and dangerous witches – it’s all in a day’s work for the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare team from Howick College. The team recently took out the top spot in the 15 minute category of the Shakespeare’s Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ) University of Otago Sheilah Winn South and East competition, held at Botany College on Sunday, April 2. Created by Howick College head of drama and expressive arts, Jillian Dryden, the school’s interpretation and performance of Macbeth won over the judges, and

will now be performed by the team in Wellington in June for the national competition. Team member Lachlan Stanghan said the competition offered an incredible chance to be part of the wider drama community and to see how others interpreted their pieces. “It was like an impromptu community formed around Shakespeare,” he said. The team of eight year 13 students who competed were Madi Hewett, Erica Harrison, Jessica Bennett, Sabina De Lange, Scarlett Edwards, Sebastian Rowse, Kimberley Langevad and Lachlan Stanghan.

Choral Society mix it up Pakuranga Choral Society presents a concert of contrasts – sacred and profane. The sacred side is represented by Howard Goodall’s setting of “The Lord is My Shepherd” (best known as the TV theme to “The Vicar of Dibley”) and Mendelssohn’s beautiful “Hear My Prayer”. These two works will feature soloist Emma Roxburgh (soprano). New works from conductor David Hamilton and organist Michael Bell bring brand new music to the audience.

These works introduce our baritone soloist Clinton Fung, returning from performing in last year’s Christmas concert. And the concert is filled out by part one of Carl Orff’s rousing “Carmina Burana”. Sensitive concert-goers may be reassured that part one of this work is more about spring and new life, than about profanity and bawdiness, and opens with the well-known “O Fortuna”. ■■ Sunday, May 21 at 2.30pm, All Saints Church, Selwyn Road, Howick. $25 general, seniors $20, students $10 Door sales.

Decide for yourself: VAXXED film returns to Monterey Cinemas Howick The controversial documentary Vaxxed: From Cover-up to Catastrophe launched at a premiere in Auckland on April 2. Covert screenings around NZ have been listed on social media ticketing platform Eventbrite, with venues

kept secret until three hours before the film starts. After one sold out screening already at the Howick Monterey in April, another is planned for Sunday, May 21. The film proposes a link between vaccines and autism and suggests

a cover-up by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). When UK parent Polly Tommey, co-producer of Vaxxed, went on public television and asked if any other parents had a child who suffered autism symptoms after

vaccination, like her son had. A quarter of a million parents contacted her. Vaxxed was initially selected to premiere at Robert de Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival in New York last year and was to be introduced by the acclaimed actor but it was pulled at the last minute.

Maths team wins international spot By Marianne Kelly

A

Macleans College team is one from two schools selected to represent New Zealand in the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge organised by the International Meeting Management Corporation. Teams were given five full days during the Easter holiday or over a weekend, to complete a problem involving the implications of jet-lag and ambient temperature on an international conference. Three Macleans teams tackled the problem with Year 12 students, Sashi Peiris, Owen Wang, Zijun (Allen) Hui and Yang Fun Yun making the cut. A team from Whangarei Boys High School is also a New Zea-

land finalist. The students were asked to organise an international meeting to discuss the effects of jet lag after the participants’ recent travel from their home country to the meeting location which may be in a different time zone or in a different climate and time of year – things that may affect the meeting’s productivity. They were required to help solve the problem by creating an algorithm that suggested the best place or places to hold a meeting, given the number of participants, their home cities, approximate dates of the meeting and other information the meeting management committee may request from its clients. New Zealand entries were

judged by a panel of Auckland University of Technology (AUT) lecturers. New Zealand co-ordinator for the event and AUT mathematics lecturer Kerri Spooner says the teams spent four consecutive days working on the problem without any outside help. “It’s like being at a maths camp for the week working on solving a real life problem,” she says. “It is great to see students having a go at solving real world problems with mathematics which is the essence of mathematical modelling. “The quality of the submissions was high, being tough on the selection panel to make a decision on the final two.” Papers will be judged early next month.

MASTERFUL: Some of the WMG gold medal winners. From left: Patrick Garratt, Jim Beban, Steve Morris, Marilyn Simpson, Richard Poole, Annie Hawaikirangi and Kaipara Solomon. Photo supplied

WMG success for Koru Tennis Club By NATHAN MORTON Success is not an unfamiliar term for Koru Tennis Club; however this past season may go down as its best yet. The Pakuranga tennis club’s participation in the recent World Masters Games saw the club walk away with a staggering 14 medals, achieved by 11 of the club’s players. Gold medals were awarded to Annie Hawaikirangi, Anna Jacob, Kaipara Solomon and Marilyn Simpson, who competed in various grade levels of the competition. Many players also collected a range of silver

and bronze medals in the games. Koru members also took part in the annual Fisher Cup competition, an annual end-of-season contest dating back to 1944. The final game saw Koru Tennis Club clinch the trophy from a strong Bucklands Beach team, winning the contest for only the second time in their history. This success appeared to reach the junior level as well with the Koru junior 16’s taking home various wins. Various other competitions were witness to Koru members claiming accolades in

the 90th Aotearoa Maori Tennis Championship and TNZ Seniors National Teams event. To cap it all off, participation in the Auckland Senior Interclub Competition by seven Koru teams, led to the local club placing in the top 3 of this premier Auckland competition for a second year running. Club president, Raz Iugan, said: “The achievements capped a wonderful season for the club. Although we may be one of the smaller clubs in the Eastern Suburbs, we certainly punch above our weight!”

ach week Hurricanes wizard Beauden Barrett continues to produce magic that confounds opponents and leaves rugby fans in awe of his talent. Was there ever a better first-five? Dan Carter, Andrew Mehrtens, Grant Fox and Carlos Spencer all brought something different to the position to have New Zealand supporters debating who was the best before Carter got the nod. There has also been some great overseas No 10s like Australia’s Mark Ella and Stephen Larkham, Wales’ Cliff Morgan, Barry John and Phil Bennett, France’s Jo Maso and Ireland’s Jackie Kyle and Mike Gibson, who also starred as a second-five outside John when the 1971 Lions won their test series against the All Blacks. None, however, had the array of attacking skills possessed by Barret although Fox, Carter, Mehrtens and John were far superior goal-kickers. Until last year when Carter moved to France and Aaron Cruden was injured in the series against Wales, Barrett was the super sub who came on late to use his sidestep, swerve and searing pace to score tries. Invariably he played fullback. But when the gifted Cruden got hurt, Barrett took his chance with such brilliance that he emulated Carter’s 2015 feat in being named International Rugby Player of the Year. When it comes to razzle dazzle, noone does it better than Barrett whose tactical nous has grown at a rate that must give the national selectors huge satisfaction. Last season we delighted in the thrilling breaks he made and were astounded at his ability to get the perfect bounce from his chip kicks to either score or set up tries. This year his mastery of the crosskick has been unbelievable in setting up tries for Vince Aso, Ngani Laumape, Corey Jane and not so little brother, 1.95m tall Jordie. On Saturday night in Christchurch against the unbeaten Crusaders, he

Agnew’s Angle faces a bright young talent in Richard Mo’unga in what should be the best Super Rugby clash of the season, weather permitting. While NZ selectors Steve Hansen, Wayne Smith and Grant Fox are renowned for their loyalty to those who have performed for them in the past, on current form Laumape, Aso and Jordie Barrett should be candidates for their squad to face the British and Irish Lions. Laumape leads the Super competition try-scorers with 11, one more than Aso. Among the four who have scored seven is Crusaders newcomer George Bridge who is a talented left wing with no kinks in his armour. Among those on six tries are David Havili (Crusaders) James Lowe (Chiefs). Julian Savea (Hurricanes), Reiko Ioane (Blues) and Waisake Naholo (Highlanders). From that lot the Hurricanes rate as easily the top try-scoring NZ team with 27, followed by the Crusaders (13), Chiefs, Blues and Highlanders (6). Jordie Barrett, who went on last year’s northern tour as an apprentice, has been an outstanding fullback for the Hurricanes though second-five remains his preferred position. He’s also a better goal-kicker than brother Beauden despite having an off day in the 41-22 defeat of the Stormers. With TJ Perenara and Jane also in top form, the Hurricanes have the slickest backline in the competition. However they lacked the forward power to beat the Chiefs in their only loss of the season. Hence they need to be wary of the Crusaders in what should be a Saturday night thriller. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author
