She often travels to the borders of South Sudan – a nation where civil war broke out in December 2013 ignited by a political struggle between president Salva Kiir and former vice-president Riek Machar. In July 2016 the conflict

stepped up a notch, and with the additional outbreak of famine, the situation in South Sudan is now considered one of the world’s greatest humanitarian crises. It is estimated 901,000 South Sudanese refugees have crossed into Uganda due to the ongoing conflict that has forced more than two million people to flee their homes. “We’re seeing people literally

t was 1946 in Suva, Fiji, and Shiv Prasad had his eye on Yashwant Chaudhary. At least, that’s how she likes to start the story. Last week, the loved-up couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Bruce McLaren Retirement Village – a milestone Yashwant never imagined they would reach together. “We’ve been really lucky so far [in health and life]. I never thought we would make it to this.” They were only 21 when they married in an elaborate, traditional Hindu wedding hosted at Yashwant’s parents’ residence in Nausori and both pursued careers in the education sector. Yashwant graduated as a primary school teacher from Fiji Teachers College in 1946 and devoted herself to this profession for 36 years. In her teaching career, she was a pioneer at promoting special needs education and was proactive in promoting equal opportunities for women. Shiv attended Auckland Teachers College in the mid 1940s and went on to serve in the Fiji Ministry of Education for 41 years, taking up various roles including head teacher, senior

Seventy years down the track, the couple have two sons and a daughter, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren – and they’ve learnt a thing or two about what makes for a good marriage. “Give and take... and be happy. The important thing is happiness,” said Yashwant. “You’ve got to listen to each other, too.” Since immigrating to New Zealand in 1987, the couple

said another. Daughter Yashwini Krishan said it’s been lovely to watch her parents fully embrace their new environment at Bruce McLaren, and credited the “incredible” staff team for the care they have provided since then, particularly village manager Warren Herring and clinical manager Nicky Rijns. She told the Times her parents’ example of marriage and commitment has taught her well. “Mum and dad’s long journey has taught us to be honest in a relationship, be tolerant and to be appreciative of each other’s qualities.”

Sky Tower Stair Challenge raises $1.25m A team from the Howick Volunteer Fire Brigade (HVFB) raised close to $10,000 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) by racing up Sky Tower. They got in behind the top individual fundraiser not in a team, Maaka McKinney, too. McKinney raised $16,430 after he spent three weeks cycling up the South Island and walking up the North Island before tackling the stairs on the day. He was greeted with an emotional haka on the morning of the event. A group from the HVFB Richard McLaren, David Paisley and Kaileigh Howard - joined McKinney on the last mammoth 50km leg from the Bombay Hills to the Sky Tower. They kitted up in their

fire gear, joined by a crew from the army, police and ambulance,” a spokesperson said. “The 50km walk took them about 12.5hrs, they rested every fews km for 5 minuntes, rehydrated, ate and checked those increasingly-sore feet. “The camaraderie, spirit and support in this pack march was a very humbling experience. “They arrived at the Sky Tower with fire fighters lining the streets, cheering in adulation of Maaka’s phenomenal feat.” The walk was then followed up by stellar sub-20 minute stair climb - 51 flights, 1,103 steps wearing 25kg of kit breathing apparatus. Three other Howick Volunteer Firefighters

completed the climb, with station boss Eamonn Guinan having to withdraw “with a serious case of man-flu”, with rookie firefighter Ben Hussey taking the day with a 14.55 climb. Others to compete were Steve Flett and Ollie Griffin, and Howick career FF Andrew Tomlinson third with a scintillating climb time of 9.50. Howick VFB collected $9892 for LBC from corporate sponsors, friends and a good chunk generously donated from the patrons of the local bars Grangers, Applejacks, The Barrel Inn, Corner bar, The Good Home, Goode Bros and Doolans, and the public. Nine hundred firefighters from communities around New Zealand as well as Australia, USA, Chile and Croatia took to

the steps of Sky Tower. The 2017 target was set at $900,000 which was achieved four days before the event with the figure landing well beyond the target. The firefighters have dedicated huge amounts of their personal time over the past six months to exceed their fundraising efforts in 2016 with the top fundraising spots highly contested. Simon Oliver from New Plymouth West Volunteer Fire Brigade who raised $25,976 was named the top fundraiser for the second year in a row. The team that raised the most money was Auckland Airport Rescue Fire with $62,218. The brigade who raised the most money based on the number of firefighters in the team was

Tamatea Rural Fire Force with $21,505. The current top record holder for speed is Josh Harrison from Mount Wellington Station who has kept his first place spot for seven years running reaching the top of the tower in 9 minutes and 20 seconds. In second place was William Garnett from Auckland Airport Fire Rescue who completed the climb in 9 minutes and 38 seconds, while Andrew Tomlinson from Howick Station came third. The fastest woman up the tower was Rebecca Wright from Otara Station with a time of 13 minutes and 59 seconds. For a full record of race results visit www. firefightersclimb.org.nz

Restoration on the cards I

t’s been more than a year since Matthew Brajkovich started work on restoring the Cockle Bay domain, and now he’s asking for the support of the community. The long-time Cockle Bay resident has major concerns about the domain in its current state. From the gorse in the ground to a confrontation with the resident wild cat, to the presence of possums and the increasing likelihood of a huge willow breaking the bridge when it falls, there’s a lot that needs fixing, said Mr Brajkovich. Fortunately, there’s a group willing to step up to make a positive difference. Mr Brajkovich has pulled together 30 community members with a passion for turning the domain into a ‘true local hot spot’ for all to enjoy, including residents with connections to local schools. He envisages the domain as a thriving habitat for wildlife, a space families can enjoy and a place where locals can feel they play a part in looking after a community asset. “In ten years, we could look at this and go ‘wow, look what we did!’ and that would continue - for the next generation, and the next.” First up on his to-do list is clean up and pest management, followed by planting native trees, removing the willows and growing vegetable summer crops on the John Gill Road side of the domain. He’s got plenty of ideas to put into motion, but gaining council approval to make the changes has been difficult, admits Mr Brajkovich. He hopes an increase in community support for the project will hurry along a positive outcome. “Trying to get the council to let people do things is the biggest barrier. There’s an atti-

tude of complacency that it can wait. “We’ve got people who are willing and ready to go, we’re just waiting on council to give us a yes.” Having previously worked in industrial construction, Mr Brajkovich said he understands the reservations council may hold regarding health and safety, but said he keeps that at the forefront of his mind when working, and hopes council can reach an agreement with the group giving approval for the work to take place. “The problem is most people get fatigued and then decide to take shortcuts, and sometimes when people haven’t

done a lot of physical construction work in the past, they don’t even recognise when they are getting fatigued. “That’s why whenever we work, it’s for a maximum of four hours. That’s enough for one day.” Earlier this month, Mr Brajkovich found a mother duck and her little ducklings, and has credited the removal of hedgehogs and rats from the domain as the reason for their return. He’s now encouraging locals who are keen to be involved to join the Facebook group ‘Cockle Bay Domain community restoration and garden project’.

Sybil celebrates 100th with grace By Marianne Kelly

A

sked her age, 100-year-old Sybil Fortune says “21 and a hell of a lot of months”. With grace and humour, Mrs Fortune relished the celebrations in Howick last week with family and friends. At 100, she says she doesn’t feel any different. “I’m just accepting of it and I have had a very good life.” She was a music teacher. But, with World War II underway, she was seconded to the Ministry of Supply in Wellington where she met her husband Bart Fortune. A descendent of the Fortune family who came to Howick to farm in the 1850s, he was sales and promotions manager at the Wellington outpost of RCA (the

Radio Corporation of America). He took a key role in the formation of TANZA Records with the mission “to assist New Zealand artists” and producing its first record Blue Smoke in 1949. Sharing their love of music, the couple held concert parties for troops, particularly the many American servicemen stationed in New Zealand between 1942 and 1944. They were married in Wellington in 1948. Steeped in the American big band era (Mr Fortune was road manager for American singer Nat King Cole’s New Zealand tour in the early 1950s) the couple filled their home with music. They loved Frank Sinatra and Artie Shaw. Their son Gavin says his Dad “was locked into the clas-

sics”. “They were all marooned on the Frank Sinatra era. But when the big band era finished he couldn’t cope with rock ’n’ roll. Mrs Fortune, however, relished its arrival and on her birthday confirmed to the Times “I love the Beatles”. “Their lives revolved around music,” Gavin says. “On weekends I heard Swan Lake before any of the other kids.” When Mr Fortune finished work at RCA, the couple did a stint on a sheep farm at Dargaville, a time Mrs Fortune recalls as she commands her son to “get in behind” for the Times photograph. They moved to Auckland in 1956 building a house in Waipuna Road, the site of the Capri Clinic

today. In 1971 Mr Fortune retired as sales manager of Alex Harvey Metal Containers. The couple sold their Waipuna Road house and moved to Piha where Mrs Fortune remained until 15 years ago. Mr Fortune died in 1998. Mrs Fortune’s family say she loved Piha, swimming every day and she loved tennis. She also established a special rapport with the local children, always asking open-ended questions. Some of those children, now grown-up, were among the guests who celebrated the centenarian’s birthday last week. A special treat was to see her grandson Roger and his great-granddaughter Matilda who came from Newcastle, New South Wales, along with her second grandson Steven, of Auckland.

Couple and their faith take on Uganda’s war and refugees because of the vicarious trauma, but I do feel like after doing this for a few years now we’ve got a good support system around us.” Despite the dismal circumstances, Mrs Manson said some of the people on the frontlines of the crisis still hold out hope for a future defined by peace and not war. The avid writer, who often pens her experiences on the couple’s blog timandhelenmanson. blogspot.co.nz, has witnessed first-hand the positive difference Tearfund is making on a global scale and said she has faith in the difference everyday Kiwis can make by supporting its work. “What I want to do for these people is to help them and do whatever I can with my humble skill to bring them some light today. “Whether that’s a water trucking or whether that’s food or whether that’s trauma counselling in the long-term, I feel like by writing about it and sharing it with Kiwis, we do help in some way. “We really love it, and we really believe that this works.”

kilometres out of Mosul on the Syrian border where ISIS invaded in August 2014, killing more than 6000 people in one day and taking thousands more captive. Three years on, heartbreaking scenes of destruction still permeate the defeated town, said Mrs Manson. “It’s really bleak. They hope to return to their homes, but I’ve got pictures from Sinjar. I wouldn’t even know where to begin – that town is just annihilated. “There’s also a lot of fear. People are worried they’re going to get caught because ISIS say ‘we will come and find you, and if you escape, we will kill everybody that you know’.” Harrowing tales of abuse at the hands of ISIS, teenagers forced to wear suicide belts and children gifted grenades as birthday presents are only a fraction of the unimaginable horrors Mrs Manson hears about in her communications work for local and international non-profits. She told the Times the couple speak often to counsellors and keep in regular contact with their families back home to deal with the confronting reality of their work. “Hearing the worst of humanity’s stories and going to sleep at night can sometimes be a challenge

The former Pakuranga couple settled permanently in Uganda three years ago, where Mr Manson works as country director for Tearfund’s partner Tutapona – a not-for-profit organisation providing trauma counselling for victims of war and refugees. With a desire to be positioned alongside the most traumatised people in the world, setting up operations in Uganda and Iraq was a very intentional move, said Mrs Manson. “It’s really strategic [for us] to be in Uganda, surrounded by countries that are in such war. “Then in Iraq it’s very strategic too because you’ve got ISIS on your doorstep. [Tutapona] are working right in the heart of this area where people are coming out of Mosul. They’re working with people 24 to 48 hours out of being released from being sex slaves with ISIS. “These people are fresh out of captivity [and] they’re at the worst end of the spectrum that you could expect because their trauma is so fresh... they have posttraumatic stress disorder to an extent we have never seen. Most of them have suicidal tendencies.” The mother-of-two recently returned from Iraq where she was based in Sinjar – a town located three

’ve always wanted to travel to Cuba. Cheers to you, Howick Little Theatre, for helping me tick that one off the bucket list – 1950’s style. I’ve chosen three ways to describe HLT’s must-see production of Our Man in Havana, because if I’m honest, one simply doesn’t seem like enough. Hilariously witty, exceptional in presentation and wonderfully engaging. The spy satire filled to the brim with humour tells the story of Jim Wormold – an underemployed vacuum cleaner salesman in 1950’s Cuba who is struggling to pay for his teenage daughter’s extravagant lifestyle. When the British Secret Service request his services as their man in Havana, he simply can’t afford to say no, but in a comical turn of events worthy of a Mr Bean-style spinoff show, it becomes painstakingly obvious Mr Wormold doesn’t have a clue how to be a secret service agent. From improvised excuses in his dealings with Cuban police, amusing sales pitches for vacuum cleaners and an innate ability to escape being poisoned by his rival, Mr Wormold keeps the entertainment

levels rocketing sky high as he journeys through what it means to be their man in Havana. With a half-eaten Kapiti icecream in hand, I sat in the middle of the packed theatre, watching actors young and old showcase an exceptional standard of versatility, talent and passion. Director Pam Browne once told me she wanted the show to provoke thought through comedy rather than a direct statement of facts, and that’s exactly what she’s done with Our Man in Havana.

She’s pulled off an outstanding performance – seamlessly intertwining the storyline and cast with technical excellence to create a theatrical masterpiece you don’t want to miss. If Cuba’s not on your bucket list, that’s cool. I wouldn’t dare hold it against you. But if you’re down for a good laugh in 1950’s Cuba, I suggest you add a travel stop to the temporary bucket list, and get along to Our Man in Havana, showing at Howick Little Theatre until May 27. You may just find you’ve changed your mind.

ngagements, weddings, enduring commitment, new arrivals and just because – it’s all about love. And often, the symbols of that love are beautiful pieces of jewellery that are crafted with the same love by an artist who can capture that unique story. When Chris Schweder launched Howick Village Jeweller in 1985 his vision to was to push the boundaries of jewellery design, test the limits and create pieces that embrace love. He took his first jewellery designs to the world from a shop tucked away on the ground floor of Howickville – the village’s groovy 1980s undercover mall. He remained true to his vision and his flair for crafting award-winning jewellery from precious metals and gems found it’s way into the hearts of jewellery lovers, both

locally and throughout New Zealand. As the business grew Village Jeweller had a couple of moves to the south-eastern end of Picton Street and now, they have a new home at 59 Picton Street, the former location of Silks Jewellers. Chris and his team have almost come a full circle – with the new shop being only a couple of hundred of metres from where Village Jeweller started out. They are excited to combine all that was great about Village Jeweller with the success John Lovell achieved with Silks Jewellers. “The last few months were an unbelievably massive undertaking and surrounding ourselves with solution-based thinkers kept me remarkably calm,” says Chris. “There will be an on-going transition during the next year and we have included the visible workshop where customers can

watch our craftsmen at work.” The process of making an original or repairing a treasured piece has always captivated Village Jeweller customers. Chris has always worked with artisans who share his dedication to jewellery design and throughout the years he had three young craftsmen who were New Zealand’s top apprentices. From 1985 to 1995, Chris pushed himself and entered jewellery competitions where he frequently won national awards. There were wedding shows, home shows, solo exhibitions at Uxbridge and Artec – all raising Chris’s profile. His talent was recognised and for five years Chris mentored all jewellery apprentices in New Zealand until 2010. Village Jeweller developed a skilled team and in 2013, a significant change was defining Village Jeweller as a separate entity from Schweder Bespoke. Village Jeweller offers quality ranges from leading local and international jewellery designers whereas Schweder Bespoke is all about Chris’s boutique design service. Both are located at 59 Picton Street. Quality, innovation and inspired elegance remain important to Village Jeweller and exciting ranges that were successful for Silks Jewellers have been added as well as some new exclusive ranges. Call into Village Jeweller today and explore its stunning new home.

Denim is a hard wearing fabric that never goes out of fashion and is a popular choice to many people. My idea is to design and produce one-of-a-kind bags that no-one else has. “This fits in with my philosophy of not wasting pre-loved items. It is satisfying taking something nobody wants anymore and using my skills to create something attractive and useful,” Joanne continues. “It reduces landfill and hopefully encourages people to think of ways to make the most of what we have.” Joanne’s bags are fully lined with a variety of pockets for all purposes and each is individually crafted. handyman who enjoys restoring pre-loved brass, silver, bronze and copper items many of which have been discarded or forgotten. Using cleansing agents, polishing sticks and brasso, a wide range of items are brought to shine on a bench polisher or buffed and finished by hand. “I don’t charge an hourly rate,” states Paul. “I put in whatever effort is necessary to ensure the desired result is achieved. My biggest thrill is to see the finished item restored. I enjoy watching the reaction of people when they get their treasures back in considerably better condition than when they first brought them in.” Rona Marsh, a resident of Half Moon Bay and a regular visitor to Classy Crafts, had a brass plate in her possession which had blackened over time and she considered throwing it away. After chatting with Paul she decided to leave in his care. A fortnight later much to her delight the plate was returned in beautiful condition revealing an intricately engraved pattern in the brass and insets of silver and copper which had hitherto been hidden. “I was absolutely blown away,” Rona Marsh explained. “The restored plate is beautiful. I am gifting it to my daughter and am so glad I didn’t throw it away.” So if recycling is your thing, why not visit Classy Crafts indoor market, open 9am to 1pm every first and third Saturday of the month, at All Saints Community Hall, 30 Cook Street, Howick. You won’t be disappointed.

Inspirational Source Cafe V

isiting Source Café is a special experience. It’s not just about the great coffee, food and friendly service, but it’s about the stories around this ethical and sustainable business. And now Source has a full liquor license, you can enjoy evening meals there on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The café was opened in November and is owned and operated by business partners, Nik Webb-Shephard, Michelle Pratt and Nicola Prendergast. The two women also own the neighbouring childcare business, New Shoots. Nik is CEO for the New Zealand’s Child Labor Free (CLF) – an organisation with the vision of creating a world free of child labour. The CLF Team has also been involved in establishing an early childhood centre in Kolkata for children whose mothers have opted for freedom from the sex industry. This project is in partnership with a group called Freeset, who make the Source Café uniforms as their new source of employment. Inspired by unique innovations and sustainable efforts the three partners saw on an overseas trip with CLF, they decided to launch the café together. Everything from the food through to the furniture at Source is, ethical, upcycled, recycled, Fairtrade or organic. “We try to be as sustainable as possible,” Nik says.

SPECIAL EXPERIENCE: Top left, the Source of Granola and Green Machine Smoothie; topright, Source Café owners Michelle Pratt, Nikki Prendergast and Nik Webb-Shephard; below left, Source Café by roadside; below right, a fully stocked Photos Wayne Martin & supplied selection of daily onsite baking.

Source’s menu (printed on recycled paper) includes a rundown on the origin of their key products – such as honey from Longhill Farms in Waiomio, bacon from Freedom Farms in the South Island and artisan breads from Sean Armstrong’s

Loaf. On this menu are some exciting breakfast options such as The Elvis Waffle (crisp waffle, caramelised banana, peanut butter, bacon, maple syrup and vanilla mascarpone) or Source Granola (house baked granola with gin-

ger, turmeric, cinnamon, nuts and fruit served with Raglan coconut yoghurt and stewed fruit). The lunch and dinner menus are also innovative, while the all-day Kids Menu has some real winners. The cabinet food is prepared

on site and has some fascinating takes on old favourites. The wine list features a selection from Byrnes Wines of Kerikeri, while the beers are sourced from McLeods Brewery in Waipu and spectacular hard shakes include a delicious chocolate milkshake spiked with whisky and a vodka blended banana milkshake. In a lovely setting with a good parking area, Nik describes the décor as “raw, exposed, inviting, warm and honest.” And with upcycled chairs from an old hall, mismatched knives and forks, and lots of lush green plants, this sums it up. And there are stories everywhere. On the cutlery containers, a story details how many of the tables as well as the walls and counters of the café have been made from macrocarpa – the most eco-friendly timber produced in New Zealand. There’s also information about L’affare of Wellington who supply Gusto Blend Fairtrade coffee and Matakana’s Morris & James who made the special light fittings from hand-dug clay. Yes, Source Café really is an experience. While it is already well embedded in the local community, Nik and the team have great plans for more community engagement activities there. Hyundai for new Botany dealership T

wo new high-end car brands will soon call Botany Downs home as the finishing touches are put on a large new dealership on Ti Rakau Drive. Armstrong Motors managing director Rick Armstrong has confirmed that Hyundai will sit along Mercedes-Benz in the new complex. The 11,000m2 site boasts nearly 5500m2 of floor space and Mr Armstrong says it was always built for two brands. “We now have two exceptional franchises for the site that complement each other really well, and it will create a new automotive centre that east Auckland has lacked up until now,” said Mr Armstrong. Student freed from old bank vault It’s not often emergency services have to enlist the help of safe crackers, but there’s a first time for everything as fire crews found out on Sunday. A young music student had become trapped in an old bank vault in the old National Bank building on William Roberts Rd in Pakuranga.

The building, now owned by Auckland Council, is now used as a music studio, however assumptions that the safe had been decommissioned turned out to be incorrect as the student found out the hard way. The man became trapped in the 15sqm room at 2:30pm after the door automatically locked behind him.

kg

The man was eventually rescued with the help of the New Zealand Fire Service and a “safe cracker” who opened the door with a complicated code. The man was only trapped for around an hour and is not believed to have ever been in danger due to an air vent which food and water could have been dropped into.

Migrant Connect to help ‘settlers’ SOLUTIONS, with the Citizens Advice Bureau

R

elocation is always stressful and disruptive. Whether one is moving to a new school, a new office, a new house, a new suburb or a new town, it brings with it apprehension of the unknown. But when someone migrates to another country which is unfamiliar and completely different from what he/she is accustomed to, the apprehension and fear rises manifold. It’s totally another ball game. Adjusting to a new country is a challenge and a steep learning curve for most people. No matter how much planning you have done, it can be difficult to know where to start once you step off that plane. There are million questions to be answered. Organisations such as Citizens Advice Bureau is there for free and trusted advice. Migrant Connect at CAB is singularly focused on helping new migrants. All new migrants go through the different stages of the Settlement Curve and it is helpful

if both the migrants and people helping them, like Migrant Connect @ Citizens Advice Bureau understand that going through the highs and lows of settlement is very normal. This is how the settlement stages go: ■■ FUN – excitement with the move to a new country. ■■ FRIGHT – a bad experience, small or large can trigger dissatisfaction and negative feelings. ■■ FLIGHT – having second thoughts and regrets and maybe thought of wanting to leave and go back home. ■■ FIT – adjustment to a new life, feeling settled. The time is takes to ‘feel settled’ varies from individual to individual. Migrant Connect, a part of the Citizens Advice Bureau makes every effort to make the transistion as smooth as possible. Volunteers who are well trained, compassionate and armed with an access to vast resources try to make the migrants feel at home in NZ. Migrant Connect helps with the nuts and bolts of starting out a new life in New Zealand.

Scammers use fake purchase orders Police are warning business owners to be wary that scammers are currently using forged District Health Board invoices to swindle Kiwi businesses out of goods. It is a similar scam to one which operated earlier this year, where scammers were sending out fake purchase orders, police said. In this latest scam, using false email addresses, scammers have been sending forged purchase orders to businesses requesting the purchase of various items. While the domain will look similar to the legitimate organisation, it will differ slightly with the use of full stops, dashes, or a slight rewording of the original name. The purchase order directs the businesses to send the goods to a New Zealand freight company, which is then instructed by the scammers to forward to an overseas address. Police are aware of one shipment from Christchurch that has made it out of the country and is destined for the UK and Asia, but there may have been more incidents. This was not related to the

current DHB purchase orders that have been identified. With the co-operation of overseas domain registering companies, several domains have been shut down by police so far, however it appears that the scammers have now registered a domain similar to a New Zealand DHB. “We are currently aware of three

false District Health Board purchase orders that have been sent to separate New Zealand companies requesting goods for delivery to a freight company,” said Detective Sergeant Michael Cartwright, of the New Zealand Police Financial Crime Unit. “We believe that all District Health Boards could be at risk of being targeted

and, due to the large number of suppliers health boards have, we are concerned that this has the possibility to affect a large number of different businesses throughout New Zealand. Poor English in the initial email is a common identifying factor for the scam, and the purchase orders will often have false phone numbers and email addresses on them. “We ask that anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this scam, or anyone who has received a suspicious sounding email, please reports it to us immediately,” said Det Sgt Cartwright.

PINK RIBBON BREAKFAST

Host a brekkie for breast cancer research in humble kitchens and posh hotels, with just a few friends or more than 100 guests coming together. Breast Cancer Foundation hopes to top last year’s total of over 3200 breakfasts across New Zealand, which were attended by 90,000 people and raised $1.7 million.

Celebrity cook and author Nadia Lim, who has fronted this year’s campaign, said she is delighted by the response so far but urges even more people to get involved. “Having recently met some incredibly inspiring women who’ve survived breast cancer, I’m even more motivated to help raise funds that will save lives,” Nadia said. “I encourage everyone to get involved, hopefully inspired by some of the recipes I’ve developed especially for Pink Ribbon Breakfast!” She has released a scrumptious recipe for Pear Tart (attached) as a taster of the six exclusive recipes that hosts will receive when they sign up at www.pinkribbonbreakfast. co.nz

Proceeds from this year’s Pink Ribbon Breakfasts will go towards breast cancer research, with a focus on support for clinical trials, immunotherapies, preventing the spread of cancer, improved clinical practice for better patient outcomes, and treatments for advanced breast cancer. They will also help provide breast awareness education as well as support for patients. Evangelia Henderson, chief executive at Breast Cancer Foundation NZ (BCFNZ), said funds raised will help BCFNZ push for new frontiers in early detection, treatment and support. Missing man confirmed deceased in Whitford Police confirmed on May 12 that a male found dead on a property in Whitford was missing man John Prangley. Mr Prangley, 55, left his Whitford address on Thursday, April 13. Police said on April 28 that he did not take any personal belongings with him and had not made contact with family or friends which was out of character for him. On May 10, police said they were at the scene of a sudden death at an address in Whitford. They did not believe the death was suspicious. The matter will be referred to the coroner. Mr Prangley’s family has asked that they be allowed to grieve their loss in private and do not wish to be contacted by media, a police spokesperson said.

On Tuesday this week while patrolling Cockle Bay in my role as an HFO (Fisheries Officer), I came across four people filling buckets of sand from the beach and placing the buckets into the boot of their car. I explained to them this is not allowed and the sand was returned. This is not an isolated case and I have seen this before. Taking sand from the beach contravenes a council bylaw but new residents to NZ may not know this. Maybe our council could run an education campaign to new settlers. Barry Wood, Cockle Bay

Re travel from Half Moon Bay Marina. Were you aware travel on the Gold Card starts when you swipe your card? I found out the hard way. I was catching the 9.15am ferry to the city. The terminal is new and so I gave myself plenty of time. I swiped my card and made my way slowly down the long walkway. I anticipated I needed 10-15 minutes before the 9.15am departure for boarding. Coming back just after 3pm for the 3.30pm ferry, my card was declined due to insufficient funds. Come on! This is my Gold Card - I don’t need money to travel. Checking at the office, I was told I swiped my card at 1 minute before the 8.50am deadline that day, so travel starts from when you swipe, not when you travel - (since when)? I was told I had to go to Britomart to sort this out, but I would miss the ferry home. I am not well and needed to just get home, so I paid the extra $7 over and above what was taken from my card already that morning. I could have been stranded had I not taken some cash. Is this just another way for AT and ‘friends’ to devalue the Gold Card and catch us oldies out? I complained and was told that as I swiped on one minute early, my complaint was declined. How many other Gold Card holders are going to be caught out here? From memory, the swipe machine is not at the entrance of the terminal at, say, Devonport, but closer to the boarding ramp. Why so far away here? Name withheld ■ Auckland Transport’s Media Relations Manager Mark Hannan responds: We’re sorry to hear about this case, the letter writer appears to have tagged on just before the cut-off time. The SuperGold public transport benefit kicks in from 9am on weekdays. The time a customer tags-on with their AT HOP card is deemed their travel start time, as the customer tagged on at 08:49am, this is his travel start time.

COMMUNITY: Members and partners of the Pride of Howick Service club celebrating the club’s 25 years’ anniversary with lunch at Villa Maria restaurant. Photo supplied

Pride of Howick celebrates 25 years Following the meeting of a small group of Howick women who wished to help the community, the Pride of Howick Service Club was formed in August 1991. The group became an incorporated society and later a charitable organisation. The club logo says ‘Caring for the Community’ and this has continued to be our focus over the past 25 years. The money raised and donated over this time has totalled more than $110,000. What a marvellous contribution to the community from a small group of people. Over the years, donations have been made to many local charities including Totara Hospice South Auckland and the Howick Foodbanks, NZ Foundation for the Blind, Hearing Dogs, Kidz First, the Westpac Helicopter Trust, St John Ambulance However, we know some SuperGold passengers do require more time to board the vessel safely so we have relaxed the requirements to let them tag-on for this ferry service from 08:50am. This should be plenty of time for someone to get from the gateline and safely board the vessel before it leaves at 09:15am. Auckland’s SuperGold customers also enjoy the “PM Peak” benefit, their SuperGold concession allows them to continue travel free of charge between 15:00 – 18:30. This benefit is not enjoyed by SuperGold customers in other parts of New Zealand.

Cheap as chips

The article published in the Times on May 11, “Colin: That’s not on”, has raised my hackles (again) over Auckland Transport’s insistence on resurfacing suburban streets in chip seal. The responses from Auckland Transport’s spokesman, Mark Hannan, did nothing to placate me. By Mr Hannan’s own admission, the asphalt concrete (hot-mix) surface on Kilkenny Drive was completed in 1997. It lasted 20 years! How long is the new chip-seal forecast to last before it requires maintenance? Mr Hannan also stated that the resurfacing in chip-seal is done in the interests of maintaining “good skid resistance”. Perhaps he would care

and Christchurch Earthquake appeal plus other needy organisations and local requests for help such as the Guy Latham Trust. There is also involvement in street collections for the Foundation for the blind and Red Puppy Appeal and other appeals for volunteer support. The group has the social side too, as you can see from the photograph where we are celebrating our 25th anniversary at lunch at Villa Maria Estate (winery) recently. We meet once a month for lunch with a business meeting following and enjoy the company of partners at our special functions during the year. Anyone wishing to join the club or seeking further information is welcome to attend our meetings. Please phone Patricia on 534-9509 or Joy 274-0071. to explain, therefore, why street junctions, road bridges, (often susceptible to ice), and roads with higher volumes of traffic, are surfaced with hotmix. Is skid resistance unimportant here? Mr Hannan further claims that the resurfacing of Kilkenny Drive was carried out “in accordance with Auckland Transport road resurfacing guidelines”. Perhaps the guidelines need revisiting. Citizens of some countries are executed in accordance with the guidelines of their governments, but that doesn’t make it right! Chip-seal is noisy, messy, ugly, damaging, and shortlived. There is only one advantage of chip-seal over hot-mix, and that is cost. Just admit it! Graham Pilgrim, Golflands

Open letter to Auckland Transport For at least the third time of asking, would Auckland Transport please arrange for the street sweeping of Faldo Drive, Golflands. Both “shoulders” of Faldo Drive are covered with a thick scattering of stone chips since the sloppy resurfacing job carried out by Fulton Hogan on March 21. What does one have to do to get any action? Do I have to come and borrow the street sweeper myself? Graham Pilgrim, Chairman, Eastpark Residents’ Association

Local legal expertise in the heart of Howick

ADVERTORIAL JH11631A-V3

It took the very first page of a well-worn Bible to remind James Donovan of the year he set up his legal practice in Howick — 1969. The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan has seen many a Howick resident pass through its doors, as with any rite of passage. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving the difficulties they may have with property, family and business affairs, and know how they should best protect their assets for their

standing legal practice as somewhere they can look to for reliable advice when complications arise from business activities such as taxation, trusts and leasing premises. There is virtually nothing these excellent legal experts cannot do or resolve; as James says: “There is no substitute for experience.” Barrister and Solicitor, Michelle Donovan has joined the practice with many years experience in Public Law. Registered Legal Executives Leonie Hogg and Michelle Bailey have more than 20 years experience each in the legal arena also. Together with the stellar support from first point of call and Legal Secretary Janine Clarke, and accounting expertise from Grace Wang, the legal practice is well known for its invaluable advice and services to the community. All staff members live locally and James Gavin Donovan has captured the essence of a Howick business, thus receiving referrals that have lasted for generations. The North Shore final is on Friday June 9, the Auckland final is on Saturday June 10 and the Manukau final is on Friday June 16. Auckland solo-duos will compete on Saturday June

The regional events for both Smokefree Rockquest and Smokefree Pacifica Beats run until July 7, with the top regional bands and solo/duos submitting video footage for selection to play off at the Smokefree Pacifica Beats national final on Friday September 1 at the Dorothy Winstone Centre in Auckland, followed by the Smokefree Rockquest national final on Saturday September 2.

everal local musicians have taken another step forward in the Smokefree Rockquest challenge, New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, original music, youth event. It was a big weekend for young Kiwi musicians with around 100 bands competing at the North Shore, Auckland Central and Manukau Smokefree Rockquest heats on Friday and Saturday. The bands Dm7 and Identity Crisis from Ormiston Senior College, Minimal silence from Howick College and Haze from Saint Kentigern College were among the 12 Manukau-based bands to go through. And the bands Skwid and Silvera, registered in the Auckland Central region, were in the top 12 and featured musicians from Saint Kentigern College and Pakuranga College respectively. Smokefree Rockquest founder and director Glenn Common said the level of performances at the heats was heartening and showed entrants were getting more support for contemporary music from their schools and making use of online resources. “Between now and the regional final, their preparation work is part of the process that makes Smokefree Rockquest and Pacifica Beats such valuable learning experiences for young people,” he said. “The top bands from each of the heats going on to their final need to practise hard, craft their set, get their supporters rallied and make good use of networking

Rental pressure shows less in Central Auckland, Franklin/ Manukau, and Pakuranga/Howick (2.8 per cent, 3.2 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively). For new tenancies only, average weekly rent rose 7 per cent to $571 in Q1 2017 up from $533 in Q1 2016. This compares with per annum increases of 6.1 per cent, 2.4 per cent and 4.6 per cent as measured for Q4, Q3, and Q2 of 2016. “There are fluctuations in rent for new tenancies; however, rent for new tenancies is rising. “Landlords typically own one, maybe two properties. Residential property is a conservative investment and landlords don’t like increasing rent. They prefer a trustworthy longterm tenant who pays the rent on time and looks after the property. When a property is vacated, this is a far better time to balance costs versus incoming rent.” ■■ Rent for one and two bedroom properties continue to lead increases The largest rent increases in terms of property size were for one and two bedroom homes for the past two quarters. For Q1 2017, one bedroom properties averaged $348 per week (up 5.5 per cent from $330 in Q1 2016), and two bedrooms $437 (up 5.1 per cent from $421). A three bedroom home averaged $531, rising less than 1 per cent on last quarter ($525) and 4.3 per cent on the same quarter in 2016 ($509), while 4 bedroom homes brought in $666 (up 3.8 per cent from $641) and 5+ bedroom homes averaged $826 (up 3.7 per cent from $796).

The vacancy rate for properties on Barfoot & Thompson’s portfolio of more than 14,000 rental properties remains at 1-2 per cent, which equates to properties being empty for around 5 days in between tenants. This has been the case for more than a year. In Auckland City, which encompasses the central and eastern suburbs, as at May 8, there were just 209 homes available for rent through Barfoot & Thompson. Most central suburbs have three or fewer properties for renters to choose from. The situation is replicated across the rest of Auckland. On the North Shore there are 77 properties, in Waitakere 71, and in Manukau 133. “We are Auckland’s largest private property management provider. The number of properties we manage has been increasing 9 per cent year-on-year, so it’s not a matter of fewer listings; rather there are simply not enough rental properties to go around,” Ms Barfoot says. ■■ Average rent rising faster for new tenancies Average Auckland rent continues to rise at a relatively reasonable pace despite the high demand for rentals, increasing property sales prices, and more restrictions on finance for buying properties. Across Auckland, renters paid around 4.6 per cent more on average in the January to March quarter (Q1) of 2017, compared with the same quarter the year before. Average weekly rent across all property types and locations was $531, up from $508. Average rent rose more in South Auckland (6.4 per cent), and slightly

he Auckland rental market is showing signs of being under pressure according to the latest data from Barfoot & Thompson Auckland’s largest property management company. Vacancy rates remain extremely low, the average rent for new tenancies has increased at a faster rate than the overall average, and Barfoot & Thompson is seeing record online registrations to view properties. “The Auckland rental market is under strain. Both landlords and tenants are beginning to feel it”, says Barfoot & Thompson Director Kiri Barfoot. Barfoot & Thompson’s data shows that for every rental property that becomes available on average there are 44 prospective tenants. Barfoot & Thompson received 107,268 enquiries between January and March this year. “We introduced online booking for rental property viewings in 2015. Tenants are able to enquire about a property anytime and questions can be responded to around the clock. It has streamlined the entire process for renting by opening up communication, giving automatic reminders for viewings, and providing an easy link for people to apply for a property with no paper forms required,” says Ms Barfoot. “The system has also given us data on rental property demand. On average around 20 people register online to view a property, but we’ve seen incredibly high demand in some instances. A record 105 people registered online to view a single rental property in Epsom recently, which was unprecedented.”

Blue oasis springs up in nature’s backyard When dreams have been dashed, it can be easy to fall into the rut of once bitten twice shy.

After a bad experience with one kitchen company, one homeowner wasn’t sure if she was ready to take the plunge just yet – until she found Jag Kitchens.

Surrounded by the beautiful native forest of West Auckland, it’s just the calm oasis Jade had been waiting for.

But Jade Reidy was determined not to give up on her hope of a new kitchen.

What’s more, the entire process from design to installation has been equally smooth-sailing.

“My old kitchen was probably about 25 years old and had been leaking – it was beyond help and it really was time for a new one.”

“Everything was so efficient, it was really pleasurable and it gave me a lot of confidence to pursue the goals I set out with. “A girl only gets a kitchen once or twice in a lifetime – and I’m fortunate I got the right one in the end.”

Having been disappointed by the people she approached to help with the project initially, Jade proceeded with caution – until she stumbled across the Jag Kitchens website. “I could see they really understood the whole process and wanted to make it simple for their clients which made me confident in moving forward with the whole project.” Even distance was no obstacle for the Huia local who travelled more than an hour to Jag Kitchens’ Botany showroom in the Danske Mobler Home Centre. There, she met with designer Angela Purdy who further restored her faith in the kitchen industry. “She was bubbly, enthusiastic, and got really excited about the project. Having someone capable but also personally interested in making your dream a reality was really important,” says Jade. That positive note also flowed

water flowing through the kitchen.”

“Aesthetically, we used a recycled rimu benchtop for the front part of the kitchen and for a bit of contrast, we featured a stone bench for the other side which has worked really well.”

The hue also pays homage to the home’s origins as a nauticalthemed bach by the Manukau Harbour.

Having put up with the existing kitchen for nearly 20 years, and having spent the past year brainstorming, Jade had a clear idea in her mind of how she wanted the new space to look.

However, the stand-out has to be the colour, both Angela and Jade agree.

“That blue is the same blue people used for their bach back in the 1950s, so it’s a twist on heritage meets contemporary,” says Jade.

“It’s the best part,” says Jade. “We chose a Carribean Blue tone which has the effect of

“It’s a very restful and gentle colour which ties in nicely with the rest of the house.”

With a few tweaks and input from Angela, Jade’s concept was realised with great result. “We played around with the positioning of some of the drawers – because we can customise the measurements,

fter record national median prices in March, prices are stable and sales volumes fell across New Zealand during April as the market moved past the traditional March peak and into a typical cyclical April, according to the latest figures released by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). On a seasonally adjusted basis, the national median price rose 1 per cent indicating that the decline in the national median price for April was less than expected for this time of year. This is further confirmed by the REINZ House Price Index (HPI) of market activity levels, which was launched last month. Month-on-month activity nationwide was up 0.4 per cent, Auckland up 0.2 per cent and outside Auckland up 0.8 per cent, indicating stable market activity. Over the last three months, nationwide activity was up 1.4 per cent, in Auckland up 0.8 per cent, and outside Auckland up 2.5 per cent Three regions hit new record high median sale prices in April 2017 as the national median price rose 10.4 per cent to $540,000 year-on-year. Regions seeing record median prices were Waikato (up 22.3 per cent year-on-year to $489,200), Wellington (up 18.8 per cent year-on-year to $537,000) and Otago (up 12.7 per cent to year-on-year to $381,000). The number of sales for April 2017 was 5845, a seasonally adjusted drop of 9 per cent compared to March. Year-onyear, sales volumes declined 31 per cent, reflecting impacts on market activity such as the combination of an exceptionally wet April plus school holidays, Easter and Anzac Day. REINZ CEO Bindi Norwell said the data for April shows that the market is reasonably stable, despite the impact of a number of factors on activity right across New Zealand. “These include severe weather in April - one of the wettest on record - and the combination of Easter (which

Sales volumes drop There were 5845 unconditional residential sales in April, representing a 32 per cent decline on March and a 31 per cent decline on April 2016. Importantly though, the overall tone of the market remains broadly positive, with price and sales volume drops broadly typical in April,” said Norwell. “The Auckland region has seen a continued increase in the level of inventory with almost 2500 more homes for sale in April compared to 12 months ago and the number of weeks of inventory now the third highest in the country. “Auckland’s median price increased by 3 per cent since April 2016, which suggests that Auckland is further through the property market cycle than the rest of New Zealand, which continues to see strong sales volume and price growth and an accompanying decline in inventory levels.”

Inventory up in Auckland, down everywhere else The number of properties available for sale continues to decline nationwide, with 1028 fewer houses for sale in April compared to 12 months ago, although the number of properties for sale in the Auckland region has increased by 2468 (+39 per cent). Compared to April 2016, the number of listings fell 3.2 per cent in Canterbury, 13.2 per cent

Median prices firm, continuing to be led by the regions The national median house price rose $51,000 (+10.4 per cent) year-on-year. Compared to March, the national median house price eased $2500 (-0.5 per cent). Gisborne and Nelson/Marlborough recorded the largest percentage increase in median price compared to April 2016, at 23 per cent, followed by Waikato at 22.3 per cent and Wellington at 18.8 per cent.

Days to sell moving higher The number of days to sell eased by one day to 34 days from March, and eased two days compared to April 2016. Otago had the shortest days to sell at 26 days, followed by four regions at 27 days (Gisborne, Manawatu-Whanganui, Wellington and Otago) followed by Nelson/Marlborough at 28 days. Taranaki had the longest number of days to sell at 44 days, while in Auckland the number of days to sell was steady at 35 days compared to March, up three days to 35 days compared to April 2016.

Million dollar homes show largest increase in volumes Between April 2016 and April 2017, the number of homes sold for more than $1 million fell by 23 per cent to 826 homes to equal 14 per cent of all dwellings sold. The number of dwellings sold under $500,000 has declined by 1714 between April 2016 and April 2017.

Hooping for a cause By KELLY TEED

N

ine hours of almost nonstop hula hooping with just one bathroom break is quite a feat – one that Amy McAuley has done before and intends to do again. Two years ago, the local Powerhoop group did a Hoopa-thon in Pakuranga Plaza to fundraise for charity where the Powerhoop NZ owner accomplished the feat. This year, she’s hoping to beat her own record. The group will be putting on a show at the Howick bandstand on the corner of Uxbridge Rd and Picton St on Saturday May 27 beginning at 9am and going until late hoping to raise as much money as possible. It’s just one of many fundraising tactics to help them reach their goal of $10,000 for the New Zealand Breast Can-

cer Foundation. Ms McAuley is passionate about raising money for charity. She introduced Powerhoop into New Zealand four years ago, after training as a Powerhoop instructor in Scotland and what started off as one class a week in the Howick Salvation Army church, has grown into nine Powerhoop communities around New Zealand. Each year, they collaborate together to fundraise for a variety of different charities. For the Pink Ribbon Breakfasts will be held up and down the country by Powerhoop members while local businesses have also jumped on board to sponsor prizes for silent and online auctions. The Heart Foundation is also getting some love, with Ms McAuley’s group walking (while hooping of course) around the Ellerslie Race-

course. While they’re serious about raising money for well-deserving charities, they certainly know how to have a bit of fun while doing it. Also in the works is a cheeky nude calendar to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation – a cause close to Ms McAuley’s heart. “For years I suffered from [negative mental health]. I had Post Natal Depression, I had an eating disorder, I know how bad life can be without exercise in life and I know how much it saved my life and helped my mental health and wellbeing,” she said. “We’re really all about using the power of the group. We’ve got an incredible community in Powerhoop with women of all ages, shapes and sizes, and some men as well, and we love coming together to raise money for charity.”

esign & Build South East is a guide covering building issues in southeast Auckland. From Howick, Pakuranga, Ormiston, Pine Harbour, Beachlands and Maraetai, to Manukau, Takanini and Papakura, this annual magazine covers an area where demand for homes is at a premium. This special publication looks at buyers’ options within these unique communities from apartment to family homes; suburban to coastal lifestyles. We examine buying off-the-plan, subdividing large sections and opting for a smaller lifestyle block. Home renovation, landscaping, architecture, local infrastructure and more will come under the spotlight and there will also be a strong focus on town developments and the growth of amenities. With numerous choices available, we ask what are the real points of difference that building companies and home services offer? To help showcase your business we are offering an editorial bonus. Submit your editorial contribution (of approximately 250 words) to be run with all bookings over a half page – subject to the editor’s discretion and as space allows for smaller bookings. This full colour, glossy information guide aims to aid in the decision-making process. The publication will be available for pickup throughout south-east Auckland and online at timeshouse.co.nz.

O star of the sea, help me and show me herein, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me here you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. The prayer must be said for 3 days and the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thanks for prayers answered.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, May 18, 2017 — 27

Few fans singing the Blues S

inging the Blues isn’t offering much joy to coach Tana Umaga and the Aucklandbased Super Rugby team’s fans. While six wins from 11 games is slightly better than their league counterpart Warriors’ four from 10, they still sit bottom of the NZ franchise. Their problem is not so much lack of individual talent as a lack of cohesion despite the best efforts of Umaga and forward coach Steve Jackson. The tight five is solid, especially when Charlie Fauimuina starts at tight-head prop, and rangy Scott Scrafton is coming on nicely as powerful Patrick Tuipulotu’s locking partner. With loose forwards of the calibre of Steven Luatua, Akira Ioane, Jerome Kaino and Blake Gibson, the pack doesn’t lack strong ball carriers. That is also true of a backline that boasts the likes of Augustine Pulu, Sonny Bill Williams

and George Moala inside champion wings Reiko Ioane and Matt Duffie who, on current form, rate among the best in the country. Furthermore any team that can afford to leave an attacker of Melanai Nanai’s class on the reserves bench must have incredible talent to choose from. So why are they not performing with the finesse we are seeing from the Crusaders and Hurricanes? In the past it has been fashionable to put it down to the lack of a top class first five of the calibre of Beauden Barrett, Aaron Cruden, Lima Sopoaga and Richie Mo’unga. However the main problem is that the forwards are too slow to provide quick ball from breakdowns, thus allowing opposing defences to swamp their backs before they can gain momentum. Certainly nuggety halfback Pulu has added attacking punch in close. But hopes that play-

maker second-five Sonny Bill Williams would provide much needed cohesion and set up tries has failed to materialise. Which is understandable given the little time he has played since

suffering a bad injury at the Rio Olympics. Nevertheless. more urgency from the forwards at breakdowns would provide the backs with more space to emulate the eight tries they scored in their 50-32 demolition of the Cheetahs. Highlights of that match were a stunning try by Akira Ioane and a double from little brother, Reiko. Meanwhile the impact new coach Brett ‘Razor” Robertson has had on the unbeaten Crusaders has been stunning, culminating in their last round 20-12 win against the Super Rugby defending champion Hurricanes. In a match in which flanker Matt Todd scored the only try against a team that has chalked up a prolific try-scoring record, that performance personifies the Crusaders tight, in-your-face defence. More importantly, it demonstrated their forward dominance despite the absence of the injured

Pakuranga nails strong win Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s premiers recorded a credible 32-20 win over a dangerous East Tamaki side at the weekend. The win places PURC on the top of the competition alongside University.

Pita Alatini, the premiers coach and PURC’s director of rugby, is pleased with the result which secured five points and puts the prems in a good frame to be in the top eight for the next round. “This East Tamaki

team is one to watch out for,” he said. “They play a wellstructured game plan as we found out in the first 20 minutes when we were 13-0 down. “We fought back to secure the game but we made it hard for

ourselves through our unforced errors. “We will address those issues this week before we head to Orakei to play Grammar Tech this weekend. It’s going to be a tough grind as they were heavily defeated by University.”

Kieran Read and suspended Sam Whitelock. It also illustrated their incredible depth when 20-year-old, 1.99m Tasman lock Quinton Strange made such a strong impact off the bench. With the Crusaders tight five so dominant in the set pieces, standin captain Todd led an impressive loose forward presence until he left the field with a concussion. With Ryan Crotty directing the Crusanders backline attack and firing in a couple of accurate cross-kicks, there wasn’t much good ball available for the Barrett brothers to prosper. However combative halfback PJ Perenara showed his class behind a beaten pack with a typical tenacious performance and second-five Ngani Laumape made two strong breaks in breaking the tackle of the hugely promising Richie Mo’unga.
