lucky escape: The woman driving this car somehow escaped unhurt from this accident on Point View Drive.

Car fells power pole By Marianne Kelly

A

car lost control and hit a power pole on the last corner of the windy semirural Point View Drive before reaching the straight leading to Chapel Road. Police and fire crews were called to remove the pole which fell on the car on Monday morning. However the female driver escaped unhurt. Anne Sutcliffe, who lives just

down the road from the corner, has seen it all too many times before. “We’ve never counted, but so many vehicles have lost control on this corner over the years,” she says. “We’ve tried to talk to the council about it but all we get are cosmetic things such as signs reducing the speed limit. “They need to alter the road. “I see so many of these accidents and I often wonder if it is the people coming up the hill

that are causing them, especially those driving those really big cars. Big vehicles, she says, often straddle the double line going up the hill and, because the road is so narrow, the oncoming vehicles swerve coming down and off the tarmac. Mrs Sutcliffe is also astounded at the number of people who tried to push their way through, in vehicles and on foot, despite flashing lights and cones across

the road, especially considering the power lines were down. “Drivers and pedestrians should always exercise extra care around power lines, especially when so many emergency vehicles were flashing their lights. “They should never attempt to go through unless indicated to continue. “We had vehicles here with lights flashing but people still tried to get through.”

The Eastern Beaches median residential dwelling price reached a heady $1 million in April, according to latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. It climbed 20 per cent to $1.05 million compared with $873,000 in April last year. And pressure being exerted by Aucklanders looking to purchase in other regions is starting to show. The ‘Halo Effect’ is showing up for the first time in regions such as Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Canterbury/Westland and Otago, while regions such as Waikato/ Bay of Plenty and Wellington continue to be influenced by the phenomenon. Colleen Milne, REINZ chief executive says the biggest lever that can be pulled to reduce the pressure on house prices is to create more housing supply. “Our current monthly data shows a chronic lack of supply, not just in Auckland, but increasingly across the regions. More properties are selling than are being listed.” ■■ Eastern Beaches includes Beachlands, Botany Downs, Bucklands Beach, Cockle Bay, Dannemora, East Tamaki Heights, Eastern Beach, Edgewater, Farm Cove, Half Moon Bay, Highland Park, Howick, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Maraetai Beach, Mellons Bay, Northpark, Pakuranga, Shelly Park, Sunnyhills and Whitford. ■■ See full story in Our Homes Today, page 16 ■■ See Auckland Mayor Len Brown’s reaction to the exodus from the Super City in search of cheaper prices in the regions, page 5

hildren can be cruel. Byron Elrick realised this when he saw other children making fun of his three-year-old son Cruze at a birthday party. “The worst is that none of the parents stopped their children from making fun of him and staring at him,” says Mr Elrick. “Looking at my boy, he is perfect to my eyes,” he says emotionally. Cruze Elrick was born with a condition called grade 3 Microtia and Atresia on his right ear. Microtia is a congenital deformity affecting the outer ear (pinna) where the ear does not fully develop. Microtia is often accompanied by Atresia, which is the absence or closure of the external auditory ear canal. “It’s been a long journey as my wife and I struggled for six years to have a baby. We only found out about this condition after my son was born. Prior to that we didn’t even know it existed. It didn’t show up in any of the scans,” says Mr Elrick, a technical manager by profession.

After doing a lot of research and communicating with doctors in New Zealand and overseas, they found Dr John Reinisch a specialist in the US who can create an ear for their son. Dr John Reinisch performed 141 such surgeries in 2015. “My wife and I want to provide the best opportunity for Cruze so that it can help develop his speech, learning, hearing and all the things we take for granted. “I’m willing to go to the end of the earth for my son” says the father-of-three. He has taken the initiative of starting a Give a Little page https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/canyouearme to raise funds for his son’s ear surgery. He is determined to have a big ear for his son before he starts school at age five. The procedure Cruze will go through is called Medpor ear surgery developed by Dr John Reinisch. A Medpor technique gives a child a functional and realistic-appearing ear created from his own skin and flesh. The fees for both the surgeries excluding their cost of stay and travel are $120,000.

It was through close friends that the Elricks got introduced to local builder and entertainer Brian Paladin. In order to raise funds for little Cruze, good-hearted Howick residents Mr Paladin and his wife Kaye are organising a good old fashioned Dine and Dance at the Howick Club on July 2. Brian has been singing locally on a regular basis at the Howick Club. “People can buy tickets for $65 each which will not only give them a lovely buffet meal at the Howick

Club, but they will get to enjoy a repertoire of songs from the 60s through to today,” he says. Currently, they are working to get a celebrity guest to make an appearance and even do a few songs. There will be raffles and an auction also. “Cruze is such an adorable child and it is such a worthy cause, I believe every parent would be able to relate to this cause by putting themselves in the position of Byron and Lindsay who want to save their little boy from any

bullying or teasing when he starts school and give him the best possible chance at life,” he says. Mr Elrick says that he is really touched that so many people all over the world including the Paladins are hosting events to raise funds for their little boy.

Bands make regional finals Local youth bands from Pakuranga College, Macleans College, Saint Kentigern College, and Howick College have been selected for the regional finals of the 2016 Smokefree RockQuest. After playing off in three heats, bands Cyatic from Pakuranga College, 18 Strings from Macleans College, Haze from Saint Kentigern

College and Minimal Silence from Howick College will now play for first and second place and other awards at the Manukau regional finals on June 17. Over 90 bands from the Auckland region played off at the Dorothy Winstone Centre in the first round of the regional heats over the weekend. Founder and director

Glenn Common said the standard keeps going up as entrants get more support for contemporary music from their schools and have access to online resources. First and second placed bands from each regional final submit 15 minutes of their best performance on video, to go into the judging pool for the national final.

‘He deserves jail’

League stalwart dies

A local man has admitted a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of popular teenager Joshua Martin

By Ivan Agnew

A

grieving mum believes the man who admitted careless driving which caused the death of her son should be jailed. Clare White was at the Manukau District Court on Thursday when 46-year-old Pakuranga man Josef Kadlcik pleaded guilty to the charge relating to the crash near Pakuranga College which claimed the life of her son Joshua Martin on October 15. The Year 13 Pakuranga College student was on his motorbike heading to KFC to collect his pay cheque when the accident occurred. Ms White’s attitude has changed somewhat. A month ago she told the Times: “It must be awful for him. I feel for his family. His son went to the same school as Josh. It’s a terrible thing to happen to anyone.” However Ms White seems now resigned to the fact the punishment may not be severe enough now that the driver has admitted his guilt and so is unlikely to be handed down a

custodial sentence. “I wanted the court to honour Joshua’s life. I was disappointed he won’t get a prison sentence. What’s Joshua’s life worth,” she said.

“It just doesn’t seem fair...(it’s) a slap with a wet bus ticket.” Kadlcik is to be sentenced on June 24. Ms White will read her victim impact at that hearing.

Howick has lost one of its special characters with the sudden passing of Tony Moore, aged 69, who died at his home last Saturday. A former tireless second rower for the Howick Hornets senior rugby league team, he later coached the seniors having done stints with the club’s junior sides. In recognition of his services Tony was made a life member of the Howick Rugby League Club. He was also a life member of the Howick Sport and Social Club and its president until the time of his death. He managed the Howick Squash Club when it was situated in Moore St before it moved to Meadowlands Drive and was a member of the fun loving Dirty Dozen, a group of friends who

pursued sporting activities and other social events. A man who lived life to the full and enjoyed a sing song, a punt and a pint, Tony was a popular personality who made many friends. “If rum isn’t the answer you’re asking the wrong question,” was a quote typical of his Billy T humour. His service is on Friday at 1.30pm in the All Saints Chapel, Purewa Crematorium, 100 St Johns Road, Meadowbank.

is passion is intoxicating. It’s very difficult for Mike McGrath, teacher of hard materials technology at Farm Cove Intermediate, to say goodbye to the spacious workshop he has walked into every morning at the sound of the school bell for three decades. But this is the last time this week that he will be at a place he belongs to, his second home, as he retires from school. City exodus a positive By Marianne Kelly There was a time when Auckland was criticised for sucking people out of the regions, says Auckland Mayor Len Brown. “Now we are seeing some of them leave to live in other parts of the country and we are criticised for that.” As more people, especially baby boomers, cash up their properties and move out, Auckland is being dubbed “the most leaveable” rather

than “the most liveable” city. And existing residents of popular regional centres are looking sideways at what is being called “the halo effect” as increased demand reduces volumes of properties on the market, consequently driving prices up. Mr Brown is positive, saying “it’s fabulous and is showing how we can contribute to the rest of the country.” Auckland, he says, is showing significant child birth growth, strong

local and international immigration growth and there is high interest to come to the Super City. It’s the nature of the way things are in a booming economy. Three years ago, he says Auckland was losing its best talent overseas. “Now people are pouring back in. I celebrate that. There are increasing opportunities in commerce, sport, housing choices and that’s why people are coming home. You’ve got to love that.”

he ever so macabre goings on of an ‘ideal’ American family are coming to life at Macleans College as 100 students prepare for their biggest performance of the year. The Addams Family played on Broadway in 2010-2011. But the Macleans team has lightened the production, from the over-the-top American approach to a more dark yet light-hearted Kiwi interpretation of the famous musical comedy. It’s the first time newcomers to the Macleans staff, head of drama Dr Jane Luton and director of performance music Steve Miles, are collaborating. The Macleans production, Mr Miles says includes lots of laughs, stunning harmony singing and a very tight (14piece) orchestra. “I’ve worked with a lot of adult theatre shows not up to this standard,” he says. Dr Luton says the audience will be “immersed in the experience”. “There are surprises in there but also a lovely message about family which we have been working with and enhancing.” They say they were looking for something that would appeal to the students – a contemporary musical – also a balance between music and

acting. They have brought on board a larger cast than the score calls for so that more students have an opportunity to be on stage. Apart from the 35-strong cast, they are also buoyed by the large support crews such as lighting and the props team which is introducing a few surprises on the set. “It’s great to see a team so heavy with students and not a lot of school staff pushing it,” Mr Miles says. Dr Luton says: “I love the story. It’s an amazing production and the students are so willing to give of themselves. “They are going through a good learning process and having a good time.” With the services of chore-

ographer Gina Miles, the cast has also learned the dance steps extremely quickly, she says. The cast includes: Addams family - Ben Fisher (Gomez), Hannah Reynecke (Morticia) , Emily Briggs (Wednesday), Rama Yogakumar (Uncle Fester), Lewis Luo (Pugsley), Tyson Kempton (Lurch), Zoe Jansson-Bush (Grandma). Quiz night raises funds It was a ‘pink and black’ event at the Howick RSA on May 14 for Bellyful’s Quiz Night. A full house, many wonderful sponsors, supporters, volunteers, family and friends attended and made a memorable and fun evening. The venue was packed out with good fun and challenging questions from Clint, the quiz master while great efforts were made to dress up for the event. Winning table of the night was Reaching Low Depths, each winning a goodie bag worth more than $200 each. Well done to Sharon Kelly for winning the big Baby and Mum raffle worth more than $350. More than $4000 was raised which is equivalent to 1073 meals or about 15 cookathons – 375 families in East Auckland will receive meals from this money. Main sponsors of the night were: Howick Tyres and Alignment; Stems from Home; Phoenix Cosmetics Howick; Mary and Richard Langridge; Adelina Photography; Sue Thomas, Harcourts Pakuranga; Jan McEwen Beauty Therapy; Anton Huang, Ray White Howick; Creating Wellness Pakuranga; Botany MP, Jami-Lee Ross; Woodbine Marine; Jaye’s Dance Half Moon Bay; RSA Howick;

‘Gang story wrong’ By Nick Krause

P

akuranga College has denounced a media report claiming young gang members waited outside the school with weapons, seeking to attack a student. That erroneous news story – published in the NZ Herald last week - was wrong, the school claims. That paper’s story follows revelations in the Times that a group of drunk teens calling themselves the Green Gang intimidated a Northpark family, turning up at their home wearing bandanas demanding to see their teenage son. Last week the Times reported that a social media post claimed: “So have just heard there’s been another incident at Pakuranga College involving the green gang. A bunch of girls in the “gang” waited outside the college with wrenches up their sleeves in an attempt to attack a young girl. Luckily other students got to the girl and got her to the office before the gang got her.” The Times reported that it was likely to be untrue however the Herald suggested otherwise. The college subsequently issued a statement countering the Herald’s story. The statement reads: “It has been reported in the NZ Herald in an article titled, ‘Green Gang’ threatening students,’ ‘that most recently, a small group of youths waited with

wrenches hidden up their sleeves for a Pakuranga College student to leave school. However, the girl was intercepted by another student and taken to school officials, who notified the Community Constable.’ This is not accurate, as we have undertaken enquiries and no school official was approached as stated in this extract. We have no record of any such incident involving Pakuranga College students. The article goes on to make reference to the activities of teenagers in the community calling themselves the ‘Green Gang’ and reference was made to our board chair person’s comments, who referred to multiple incidents involving the ‘Green Gang this year,

which have been referred to the Police’. We also wish to correct this statement, as the board chair, Trevor Middleton, was referring to instances in the community. Pakuranga College is aware that there have been a number of incidents within the community involving a group of teenagers and we have met with Police to discuss the activities of this group and to better understand what if any risk they pose to students at our school. We take the safety of our students extremely seriously and pride ourselves on providing a safe environment. We would encourage any parent whose child is the subject of intimidation from others within the community, to report to us and the Police.”

Great choral works Settings of two of the most splendid choral songs ever to come from the Christian Church will be performed by the Pakuranga Choral Society this Sunday. The works will be conducted by David Hamilton teamed with soloists Rachel Alexander and Sarah Court, organist Michael Bell and accompanist Valerie Sowerby. The full choir will sing the Te Deum, a magnificent

kg

hymn of praise in a vivid and rhythmic setting by John Rutter. The second work will be the moving and emotional Stabat Mater by Pergolesi. This work became extremely popular through the 19th century, while Pergolesi, in his short life, was seen to be a ‘trend setter’, even pointing a way to the immortal Mozart at the end of the century. ■■ The concert is at 2pm on May 22 at All Saints Church, Howick.

Family business runs with the times Y

ou could say that optometry runs in the blood of the Jenkins family. Since the early 60s they have operated in Howick Village as Howick Optometrists and their presence as an independent operator in the 21st century remains paramount. “We are proud to be independent and stand alone,” practice manager Frith Jenkins says. “It’s hard work to do that though. It’s not stubbornness, it’s pride and we’re still here.” In 1963 Bryan Jenkins brought his family to Howick from England where he bought an existing practice. From a house at the top of Picton Street – now Resthaven Funerals – Mr Jenkins senior and eventually his son Graham ran the business. Graham, a dispensing optician with more than 40 years experience today, started working in the practice in the early 70s. Optometrists in those days were not allowed to have a retail frontage. Strict import controls protected the country’s two frame manufacturers. The optometrists’ professional body decreed that the industry should show a ‘professional’ face to the public allowing only a brass plaque displaying the partners’ names and the hours of business.

udget Day, May 26, is fast approaching and alongside a key focus on the economy, Budget 2016 will ensure we keep meeting the needs of families in health and education. Pre-Budget announcements so far include an extra $39 million is being invested in Pharmac for 2016/17, and an additional $124 million over the next four years. Some $11 million will also be injected into Pharmac’s annual budget by district health boards. Pharmac’s budget this year will be a record $850 million, a $200 million increase since 2008. The boost in funding will allow the government agency to provide more people with access to new medicines. It also gives Pharmac more options on new medicines it can fund. Funding medicines that help people live longer and better lives is what Pharmac is all about. Last year, more than 70,000

ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany Kiwis benefited from 41 new and widened access medicines. One of the drugs Pharmac intends to fund is Opdivo, used to treat advanced melanoma. We have the highest rate of melanoma in the world, a serious illness that affects about 350 people each year. Other drugs to be funded include treatments for Hepatitis C. They’re a major advancement in the treatment of Hepatitis C, with cure rates of more than 90 per cent. In Education, an extra 1250 students will get help from teacher aides with a $15.3 million Budget funding increase for in-class support. It will ensure students with a range of learning difficulties can receive support suited to their

individual learning needs. We’ve consistently focused on raising the achievements of all our children, ensuring we’re delivering better education services meeting the needs of every child. This is the second phase of honouring the Government’s commitment to provide teacher aide support to 4000 more pupils with special learning needs. These young ones don’t always meet the threshold for intensive special needs support, but we recognise they need help to learn and make the most of the opportunities they have at school. Teacher aides play an invaluable role in our classrooms. They work alongside our teachers to enable students with additional learning needs to become more independent and confident. That’s how we want all of our people to feel. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Supporting children to be familiar with the diversity of their community was the theme of a cultural evening held recently by the Riverhills Early Learning Centre in Pakuranga. Children attending the centre come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, including Indian, Chinese, Sri Lankan, South African, Samoan, Maori, European, Filipino and Iranian. “We respect and value

the cultural backgrounds of all the families,” says head teacher Dona Pathirana. The children attended the event in individual cultural dress and sang songs to embrace each others’ differences. All parents participated in cultural dress and contributing food from their countries. “We worked closely with them to gain an understanding of what they

think is important for their children,” Ms Pathirana says. The early childhood sector in New Zealand, she says, represents children from many social and cultural backgrounds. “Its curriculum Te Whaariki embodies values of respect for ourselves and others. It aims to ensure that children are empowered in every possible way, particularly in the development of belonging.”

A bunch of losers

Re “Are these your kids?”, (Times, May 12). Of course it’s a bunch of stereotypical losers who are trying to be cool by copying the gang culture that is so endorsed in rap music in today’s society. What a f***ed up 21st Century we live in, they will be surely on the benefit when they’re older. Rose

Re “Are these your kids?” (Times, May 12). I’m from this area and damn proud to say so. If these kids aren’t sorted out fast and hard by the police before they actually do something, then they are in danger of being ‘sorted out’ by any of the many proud members of the Howick public that may take offence to their actions around town at any given time. We are a bigger gang, and we will defend ourselves and our kids

if the police do little to quell this immediately. If they are carrying weapons like it’s reported then only they can be to blame for what harm comes to them, should they continue to act tough and torment innocent kids. If the police were doing their job, they’d be locked up at the start of the week when it became public knowledge who these kids are and the violent danger they threaten to pose to others. Josh

Ban bad humans, not dogs

The blind bigoted stupidity of the “Ban the Dangerous Breed” gang angers me deeply. There is only one dangerous breed - human beings. I would love G. Barrington (Times, May 12) to witness the results of the vicious beatings and cruelty to which “fighting dogs” are subjected. They are forced through pain and fear to fight and be aggressive. They react this way because that is what their vicious, brutal owners force on them from the time they are tiny pups. All dogs are blank canvases as puppies. In those vital, early stages, those unfortunate dogs in the hands of humans who enjoy being “macho” (for macho read - enjoy innocent animals being forced to bite and tear at other dogs because, apparently, blood and suffering of animals is exciting), teach their dogs to be aggressive. The dogs are prevented from socialising with humans or other dogs. They are taught that humans cause pain and terror. Their natural instincts to love and be loved are destroyed and, yes, sometimes the dog is “broken”. They can’t be fixed because of what they’ve been subjected to and have to be put down. Most, however, can be rehabilitated. I despise those who abuse dogs. Banning breeds did not, does not, will never work. It was tried with various breeds in the past and failed. Try banning irresponsible, cruel and abusive owners. That might work. All dog owners need to be registered as fit to own a dog. All cases of abuse should be reported and the abusers should never be allowed to own a dog again. And, yes, I know what I am talking about. I have been a registered, responsible dog owner for over 30 years, first in Christchurch, then Waitakere and now Auckland, and all my dogs have been cross-breeds including staffy crosses and my current pit bull-cross. She is now 12-years-old and

has never bitten or attacked any human, other dog or animal. She is gentle and timid and is still afraid of men. Why? She was born to a family pet, a Labrador female, fathered by one of the head of the household’s fighting pit bulls. At four-months-old she was thrown into a dog fighting ring as a bait dog. Men hurt her, beat her, threw her around like a sack and terrified her by screaming abuse at her. She would not fight and was “thrown away” as useless - their words not mine. No, G. Barrington, banning breeds will not work. Banning dangerous humans from owning dogs might. MP Burstein Highland Park

Drunk driver gets away with it Last Friday night, a driver misjudged the curve in our road (Sandgate Ave) and hit my parked car, damaging it badly. The resulting collision brought most of the neighbours out to investigate. The driver didn’t stop. Initially we didn’t realise he’d hit my car and so wandered up to make sure he was ok. He was still in the process of parking his car a few houses up the road so we went to talk to him. He was so drunk he was having trouble getting out of his car, could hardly stand or even talk properly. I asked if he was ok, and he mumbled something about hitting my car, before his wife sent him inside. We called the police who said they would deal with it. Nothing happened. I rang the police on Sunday, stupidly thinking they may have gone direct to the driver. Nothing was done. Now I’m without a car until the insurance company fixes it which could be weeks, and he’s got away with drunk driving. Needless to say, his car isn’t there but I wonder how many other cars he hit between Botany Town Centre and Sandgate Ave? Brent Simpson Botany Downs

Re “The big fireball mystery” (Times, May 5). I saw it and assumed it was an aircraft, because of the speed it was moving and the direction of the trail. Took pictures of it as well. I live in Mellons Bay, so a tad closer than Beachlands. Val Rippey

Invite to gardens celebration

Seven figures reached

Close to 100 botanic and public gardens and arboreta across New Zealand and Australia will hold a world-first mass open day on May 29. Auckland Council’s Botanic Gardens in Manurewa East will join 72 others for the day. Event ambassador and manager of the Auckland gardens Jack Hobbs says the open day is designed to celebrate botanic gardens and gives New Zealanders and Australians a chance to see how these important public gardens conserve plants. “We depend on plants to enhance our environment and our lives,” he says. “At Auckland Botanic Gardens we hold a huge collection of more than 10,000 plants that thrive in our local conditions. These are the best kinds of plants for Aucklanders to come and see before choosing plants for their own gardens.” Special events planned for the Manurewa open day include guided walks with tree expert Mike Wilcox and workshops on choosing trees hosted by Jack. “Every tree has its own story, from the hardy

The council’s biodiversity team will also be on hand to give free, expert advice on how to build biodiversity in home gardens. ■ The Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand Open Day is at 10am-3pm on May 29, at the Auckland Botanic Gardens, Hill Road, Manurewa East. he Eastern Beaches median residential price broke the $1 million barrier in April, according to latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures. It climbed 20 per cent to $1.05 million compared with $873,000 in April last year. There was also a turnaround in volumes with a 12 per cent increase to 214 dwellings sold compared with 191 the same time last year. However pressure in the Auckland market is spreading across the country with record median prices for the first time occurring in Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Canterbury/Westland and Otago, while regions such

as Waikato/Bay of Plenty and Wellington continue to be influenced by the ‘Halo Effect’. Colleen Milne, REINZ chief executive says the biggest lever that can be pulled to reduce the pressure on house prices is to create more housing supply. “Our current monthly data shows a chronic lack of supply, not just in Auckland, but increasingly across the regions. More properties are selling than are being listed.” On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of sales in the Auckland region increased by 17 per cent, indicating that the drop from March was far less than normal, she says. “The Auckland region has seen a rebound in sales over the past two

months, with continuing strong demand across most of the region,” Ms Milne says. “The listing situation has tightened again, with the number of weeks of inventory dropping back to 10, a near record low. Demand remains strong and the adjustment period after the introduction of new LVR rules is over.” QV New Zealand says home values across Auckland are on the rise again, ending a downward trend in some parts of the Super City housing market over the past six months. Carpets can make all the difference to a home, creating style and ambience. And no one knows the wonders of a good carpet better than Factory Carpets and Vinyls in Panmure. Furthermore, now is the time to invest in new carpets as the long-standing business has joined the Flooring Foundation network, New Zealand’s largest body of independent carpet retailers backed by leading brands, Godfrey Hirst and Feltex. With eco-friendly, durable and luxurious options available at Factory Carpets and Vinyls, there is something for every style, budget and lifestyle. For that reason, and because of the high standards delivered by Factory Carpets, astute property managers are regular customers. They need carpet that is competitively priced, looks good, is durable and is laid in rental homes at exactly the right time. In addition, Factory Carpets supplies an extensive range of short ends and end of roll remnants for hot prices. Owners, Wendi and husband Colin – who hail from Howick – and partner Mike, have been in the business for more than a decade and with Colin and Mike’s expertise as carpet layers, the business has seen the benefit of their experience. In fact, the carpet laying team has recently received prestigious national certifications and is at the top of its game. Of course, Factory Carpets is also known for its ever-growing varieties of solution-dyed nylons which have proven quality.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, May 19, 2016 — 23

Sopoaga makes strong case D

eciding on who are the two best first five-eighths in the country will be the toughest task facing the All Blacks selectors in naming their test rugby team to tackle France next month. If Steve Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox continue with their loyalty to incumbents, Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett would be the favourites, especially with Barrett turning down a chance to play sevens at the Rio Olympics. However with Cruden (50%) and Barrett (62%) failing to impress with their goal kicking in the Super Rugby competition, there is a strong case to be made for Lima Sopoaga whose success rate is 75 per cent. The next best Kiwi is the exciting Damian McKenzie who, like

Barrett, can cover first-five and fullback. What makes the importance of having a champion goal-kicker against Wales so crucial is that their shooting star Dan Biggar is a deadly accurate master. While Cruden and Barrett remain outstanding players, the case for Sopoaga continues to strengthen, especially when one considers the advantage he enjoys in regularly playing with test halfback Aaron Smith. Not only is Sopoaga the superior goal-kicker but his all-round game and tactical nous has been excellent. And his crosskick for Waisake Naholo’s first try for the Highlanders against the Crusaders last Friday night was perfection. With the Crusaders, Chiefs and Highlanders all on 37 points, just

one clear of the Hurricanes, the performance of the NZ teams has been amazing. Never have they shown such incredible depth. Friday’s thrilling action-packed 34-26 win by the Highlanders was the game of the championship with the winners narrowly denying the Crusaders two tries before staging their magnificent fight back. Against a scrum that fielded six All Blacks, the Highlanders pack didn’t concede an inch despite not having one All Black. Certainly Elliott Dixon, who can play all three loose forward positions, is knocking on the door. Furthermore, their backs are sublime with Aaron Smith, Ben Smith and Naholo superstars and Malakai Fekitoa showing signs of returning to his 2014 form. However it was centre Matt

Faddes, in his maiden Super Rugby season, who was the surprise packet in scoring two stunning tries that combined speed and verve. While the Hurricanes enjoyed a comfortable 29-14 win against the Reds in Wellington despite the absence of several stars, the Blues were woeful when thrashed 43-5 by the hungry Lions at Johannesburg in a spineless performance that has provided coach Tana Umaga with a massive headache. He’s got plenty of men blessed with power and pace, but too few who possess the discipline and smarts with which to mould a champion team. Having started with a victory against the defending champion Highlanders following three preseason wins, the Blues showed promise.

Agnew’s Angle Unfortunately it was a false dawn with players too often performing as individuals instead of gelling as a team. Meanwhile, having lost to Argentina 29-19 in the Paris sevens quarter-final and 29-19 to South Africa in the Plate semifinal, the NZ sevens team certainly don’t look like Olympic gold medal prospects ahead of South Africa and Fiji. While the return of the Ioane brothers did much to sharpen the attack, the team have badly missed the injured Tim MIkkelson and DJ Forbes who could be back for this weekend’s final London leg. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

or some people, running a marathon is a feat in itself. But Brett Meyer from Cockle Bay decided to run one in one of the most remot parts on earth, the North Pole. The dedicated marathoner cannot get enough of extreme sports, having already completed several marathons, the Kepler Challenge Run several times, four Ironman events, and a few half Ironman fixtures; the North Pole Marathon in early April was just next in line. But this still leaves the question unanswered – why would anyone want to run 42 kilometres at the North

Pole? “Why? Because it was there to be done. I guess because it’s extreme, it’s unusual, it gives you the opportunity to get to one of the remotest places on earth, and because you can,” Meyer answers. “If you had to think of if you would ever get to a pole, it’s unlikely in most people’s lives. And then go run an event like a marathon at the pole is just extraordinary,” he says. “It’s nothing you could possibly imagine and yet it’s everything you imagine so it’s an incredible and humbling experience when you finally get there.” Meyer, in fact, was so distracted by the reality of

where he was that he didn’t even realise he finished in fourth place with a time of five hours 42 minutes. “When you’re out there for a while every single moment that you’re running you just think of what a privilege it is to be in a special place like that. Just the enormity of where you are sort of rams home” Meyer says. While running on snow and ice provided its own challenges, the biggest risk to the competitors was the cold. “Every couple of laps you would go through the medical tent and be examined by the Russian doctor who would then see whether you were physically okay to continue.”
