he was 26 years old when the diagnosis came. It was February 11, 2013, and the words ‘triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma’ meant life was about to dramatically change for Eva Wong. Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common form of breast cancer, and at grade three, the tumour was already fast-growing. It was the beginning of an arduous battle. It was the kind of battle Eva never expected to face. With no family history in breast cancer, it was a shock to return from a camping trip and discover through self-examination the dull ache she had been experiencing
was due to a three centimetre lump in her breast. She booked an appointment with her doctor who initially thought it may have been an infection, because tumours are not often associated with pain, but after the tumour was picked up through an ultrasound, Eva was immediately referred to a breast surgeon. Two weeks later, she underwent a full mastectomy and TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis) flap reconstruction, which takes a portion of the underlying abdominal muscle to reconstruct the breast with the patient’s own tissue. Six rounds of chemotherapy and five weeks of radiation fol-
lowed during a tumultuous time in Eva’s life that she says felt like being stuck on a moving train with no way to escape. “When it’s all happening, you really don’t get a chance to breathe,” she said. “It’s like being on a train with lots of stops and you can’t get off. You’ve just got to keep going and going through the motions until it’s over [but] I had faith in the surgeon, and my faith in God cemented everything. I trusted that it was all going to be okay.” Four years on, the Pakuranga resident is cancer-free, a devoted wife to husband Joshua and proud mother of 15-month-old son Joseph. When a patient goes through
chemotherapy, a couple is usually offered a free round of IVF treatment due to difficulties conceiving, but Eva and Joshua decided to try for a baby naturally. It wasn’t long after they got married in April 2015 the couple fell pregnant with a healthy baby boy. “Being able to have Joe first time round was a miracle,” she said, her statement filled with gratitude. She’s thankful for the support she had around her during her struggle with cancer – including her parents who flew up from Christchurch to be there during and after her surgery – and wants to see more awareness of the issue for young women. ➤ Turn to Page 11

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, will hold a public meeting in Beachlands this month. The controversial MP for Northland will deliver a speech at the Beachlands Memorial Hall on Sunday, May 21 at 1:30pm. NZ First Hunua Electorate spokesperson Jon Reeves said Mr Peters has a long association with the district. “He has been around the Howick and Hunua area for a long, long time and started his career in politics out there,” Mr Reeves said. “Some of our NZ First

He said he got involved with the association because he was unsatisfied with the way some things were being run and his involvement has evolved since then. Mr Faulkner believes he has been involved with some significant changes in the
industry and has more to work on. Having owned his business, Faulkner Construction, for 36 years, he immensely enjoys the role. “With carpentry or building, you’re making a mark on the landscape. It’s always going to be there,” he said. He now also enjoys seeing talented apprentices come through the system.

and clear that Pohutukawa Coast residents want change. With Winston Peters in Beachlands it’s an opportunity for concerned residents to raise questions with the leader of New Zealand First.” Mr Peters will be joined with some other NZ First MPs and a representative of Young New Zealand First, the youth wing of the party which, Mr Reeves said, has grown rapidly throughout the country over the past 18 months. Doors will open to the hall at 12:45pm and entry is free.

Family part of Dad’s team By Nick Krause
E
ven as lymphoma cancer tightened its deadly grip on Bob McMillan, he was certain he could make his planned trip to the North Pole. The local identity, the man behind luxury car specialists Team McMillan BMW, died on Monday aged 74. Formerly of Mellons Bay, Mr McMillan – full name Robert Ivory McMillan – passed away at home on May 1 surrounded by his family. He and his wife Kerry lived on Bleakhouse Road
for many years and raised their children in the area Anna (is now 45), Scott (44) and Andrew (37) . In 2014, Mr McMillan sold his 50 per cent stake in Team McMillan to spend time in retirement travelling with his wife. The couple sold a Parnell property in 2015 and moved into a Remuera apartment. Son Andrew told the Times he worked with his father from 2007 on his return from Sydney after six years in the automotive industry. He remained there until his father sold up. “All of us children had worked
with Dad whether it was washing cars or putting away nuts and bolts,” he said. “Dad’s business was a massive part of family life.” “His retirement gave him the opportunity to fulfil his bucket list of travelling a lot more with Mum. They did some extensive travel including a trip to North America to see my brother.” Mr McMillan was scheduled to go in six weeks’ time to the North Pole with his wife and 10 days ago was trying to convince the haematologist the trip was very much still on. He was an
adventurer and philanthropist. To celebrate his 70th birthday he ventured to Antarctica and Shackleton’s hut. He received the bad news regarding the seriousness of his condition on Easter Sunday. In that final week of his life he was brought back to visit Mellons Bay and Eastern Beach of which he was very fond, Andrew said. His philanthropic endeavours with Mrs McMillan were extensive and very private, said Andrew. A service is on Friday, May 5 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell at 2.30pm.

World Masters rugby player has surgery By Nick Krause Steve Ioane, the Ponsonby player who collapsed in a game against a Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) side in the World Masters Games clash last week, has been under the knife and is improving. Ioane, a relative of All Blacks and Blues star Rieko Ioane and his brother and Blues team-mate Akira, suffered a medical event during the Pakuranga Presidents v Ponsonby EPs game last Thursday. A Ponsonby Rugby Club representative yesterday told the Times Ioane suffered a heart attack and had surgery on Tuesday and is “on the mend”. PURC general manager Stephen Hackett – who also played - said Ioane was substituted a few minutes before half-time and collapsed as he left the field. An ambulance was 100 metres away, he said. The score was nil-all at that stage and Michael Biddick, the PURC president and coach/captain on the day, decided the side wouldn’t play on and awarded the game to Ponsonby which went on to play for the gold medal which it won. Pakuranga won its finals game on Sunday to take bronze. “Michael made the call and everyone supported it. The Pakuranga boys showed good spirit.” The club had a “whip-round” and made a donation to the Ioane’s family too. Biddick said the move was made purely in the spirit of rugby and the World Masters Games. “Everyone agreed it was the right thing to do (even though) it cost us the gold,” he said. “They were very appreciative of the stance that we took and certainly made it known. “We’re happy where we ended up. There’s more to life than winning a game.’

Plastic and reconstructive surgery that instils confidence It’s a well-established fact that New Zealand’s plastic surgeons are among the finest in the world both in the past and present. Local people are fortunate to have one of their most experienced, Dr Martin Rees, based two days a week at Marina Specialists, in the Compass Building at Half Moon Bay Marina. He has lived locally for about a decade. After many years at Half Moon Bay, Mr Rees now lives in Whitford, so he is readily available to his patients. A Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon, who has been in private practice since 1988, he founded the Auckland Plastic Surgical Centre in Remuera in 1996. His two practice partners are Dr Tristan de Chalain and Dr Alessandra Canal. With the assistance of Dr Bruce Page, Mr Rees established the Marina Specialists in 2009. After graduating from Otago Medical School in 1972, Mr Rees began his plastic surgical training at Middlemore Hospital under the tutelage of Sir William Manchester passing his final exam for his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1979. Advanced specialty training in Britain and Australia saw Mr Rees develop and publish new tech-

Returning to New Zealand in 1985, he co-founded the Cranio Facial Clinic at Middlemore Hospital, specialising in cleft/cranio maxillo facial surgeries. His pioneering work with facial and jawbone distraction technology has enabled Mr Rees and others to effectively treat previously untreatable conditions. The main focus in establishing Marina Specialists was to provide efficient and quality Plastic Surgery for the Howick district locals. “It has been very, very successful
with over twenty specialists working there, now. Last year a second plastic surgeon, Dr Amber Moazzam, joined our team. We also have two excellent theatre nurses on site (Alayne and Marianne) and we work alongside dermatologists, Dr Paul Jarret and Dr Karen Agnew. “People appreciate the convenience of the Marina location and enjoy being there in a very nice destination – complete with shops, cafes, restaurants and excellent parking and boating facilities,” he explains. The bulk of Mr Rees’ work at Half Moon Bay covers skin cancer. “Not surprisingly, located in a haven for boaties, we frequently
treat skin cancers, including Melanoma, Squamous and Basal Cell Carcinomas.” His field of expertise also encompasses cosmetic facial, breast and abdominal surgeries, liposculpture, cleft lip and palate, cranio maxillo facial, micro-vascular and hand surgery. His main interests now are facelifts, blepharoplasty (eyelids), rhinoplasty (noses), otoplasty (ears), hand and skin cancer surgery. “Minor surgeries for skin cancers, hand surgeries and minor cosmetic procedures can be done under local or intravenous anaesthetic in the Marina Specialists Theatre,” he says. “While I can do consultations and after-care for major surger-

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, May 4, 2017 — 5
Metlifecare buys part of Pakuranga golf course By Farida Master Retirement village operator Metlifecare is to buy a chunk of Pakuranga Golf Course on which it plans a $140 million development. The NZX-listed company announced on Friday the conditional acquisition of a 2.38 hectare site at the Botany golf course. The Times understands that the property stretches from the entrance of the parking lot of the 18-hole course to the motel at the corner of Botany and Cascades roads (the practice fairway) and includes the golf driving range, 100m to the north-west corner. The property was sold by Elim Christian College which bought it as a strategic investment from the golf club around five years ago. The plan was to develop the property into an international sports field once the college had enough funds. The golf club sold part of its property to the school to help pay off increasing debt. Metlifecare chief executive Glen Sowry told the Times the golf club site provides an opportunity to develop a high-quality village in a prime area. “It’s a wonderful location and we are working through the sale. Certain conditions need to be met and once that is resolved, we will be working on detailed planning and resource management,” he said. “We will be working on the master plan and design in consultation with the golf club. We hope to have built it in a year’s time.” Mr Sowry is confident of the high demand in the area despite three Metlifecare villages - Highland Park, Pakuranga and Dannemora -
being in close proximity. “We have also considered the existence of a number of other retirement living options in the wider area and our projections show that there is sufficient future demand,” he said. “What gave us the confidence is that the Eastern beaches has a very high density of home owners who want to move to retirement villages. There is an excellent demographic profile and ticks all the boxes. “We are confident that the uniqueness of each of our villages, high-quality: Glen Sowry, chief executive Metlifecare.

combined with the outstanding Metlifecare residential living experience, will ensure that they remain highly competitive.” He said the site fits its vision to create unique villages which integrate with their local surroundings to become retirement destinations. “The fabulous outlook over the neighbouring golf course offers us the opportunity to build a country club-style village in an area exceptionally well serviced with nearby local amenities including shopping, sporting, recreational and medical facilities,” he said. The proposed village is likely to include around 160 units in a two-level development which will include independent living units, serviced apartments and care. Mr Sowry said the purchase is subject to third party consents being obtained - the conditions are expected to be satisfied by June 9, with the settlement date being the later of July 28 or 10 working days after the purchase becomes unconditional.

Elim Christian College to expand in south Auckland Elim Christian College sells two prime properties which were part of the school expansion plan in Botany By Farida Master

lim drops plans, sells land. The Ministry of Education is of the opinion that Howick and Pakuranga are not growing communities. At least, not at the rate other areas are growing, says Murray Burton, principal of Elim Christian College. After four years of negotiating with the Ministry for permission to increase their student roll to provide places for their huge waiting list, the college has finally discarded its plans for a new strategy. The initial plans of a proposed new education facility for 850 senior students on the 1.28ha block of land (Times, October 20, 2016) has been aborted. The property at 159 Botany Road, at the corner of Botany and Cascades Roads, saw a ‘for sale’ sign go up some three weeks ago. A piece of 2ha prime land at the Pakuranga Golf Course also belonging to the school went up for tender last week. “No matter what we said, and despite the long waiting list of students wanting to
enrol at our special character school, the Ministry was not keen to give us the nod,” says Mr Burton. “So we auctioned off half of the land on 159 Botany Road that was part of a strategic investment by the proprietors of the school, whilst keeping the parking.” Mr Burton confirms the tendering process of prime land at the golf course. It was once meant to house a purpose-built sports facility with international hockey and soccer fields as well as tennis and netball courts. “We agreed to take note of the analysis from the Ministry and maintain the roll of 1000 students instead of increasing to 1800 like we had earlier planned,” he says. As part of the new plan, the junior campus in Golflands designed for years 1-8 will now be redesigned to fit an innovative middle school from Years 7-10. “It means we will now have Years 1-10 on the junior campus. There are plans to build a brand new senior college (years 11-13) at the rear of the property at 159 Botany Road,”

he says. “Much of the current premises where the senior campus stands will be used for expansion of Elim Christian Centre. Mr Burton also outlined other plans which include opening of a new school to join their existing church campus in Pukekohe. “In our discussion with the Ministry, they mentioned that the growth rate in South Auckland is tremendous. “Areas like Pukekohe, Takanini, and Drury have intense growth and they asked us to consider taking Elim education to Pukekohe where we could provide state-integrated education,” he says. “We thought about it and realised that there are increasing numbers of students from that area who come to our school so it would be a strategy worth developing. “It’s exciting to explore a new area of growth.” The college is in the process of purchasing land in Pukekohe. “There is a lot of work to be done and it’s all go at the moment,” he says.

GRAND OPENING Come along to Jaye’s Dance, Howick opening day on Saturday, May 6 from 10:30am to 2pm
Exciting year ahead for Jaye’s Stacey Williams Director, Owner and Principal Ballet Teacher

S
tacey opened Jaye’s Dance, her first studio in Half Moon Bay Marina back in 2012 and since then she has grown the school to nearly 700 students.
“Of course I didn’t achieve this on my own, my staff is amazing and they will be with me at the new studio on Picton Street along with a few new faces,” says Stacey. Alex La’auli Lima is Jaye’s new Principal Hip Hop teacher/choreographer. His talent and experience within New Zealand and overseas is extensive. Alex wants to push Hip Hop to a higher level this year and is looking forward to working hard with kids and teens in the open and advanced classes. Kirsten Dodgen, also formally from The Palace dance studio will be taking Hip Hop classes. An exciting year ahead for Jaye’s Dance. “One of the great things about having two studios is that we are able to offer more advanced and specialist classes. Our extremely talented new choreographers will help take our most advanced dancers to the next level. “We want to encourage all dancers even those from other dance schools to come along to our open and advanced classes to upskill,” she says. Jaye’s offers a number of various classes for both male and female from ages two

years up to teens. The adult classes which are run by Sara-Jane Morgan will also be expanding into the new studio including new classes such as Total Barre and Contemporary. Jaye’s classes are catered for all levels of skill and most importantly everyone is made to feel very welcome. Their studios are friendly and exciting and strive to achieve the best in every dancer. They help all their students to be confident, accomplished and creative. They also have exciting new classes such as musical Dance Theatre with Natalie Sangster. Even though they are not an exam based school, Jaye’s go by an inhouse ribbon earning syllabus which the students work towards each term.
“Terminology and technique are very important for any dancer” says Stacey “My teachers have a strict class structure that they have to follow in order to make the classes jam-packed, full of interesting and fun things to learn.” They also have competitive crews, troupes and individuals who have achieved many awards over the past few years. The new studio on Picton Street is in the heart of Howick next to Jetts Fitness, this new location is super convenient and easy. The design is modern and fresh with a new professional dance floor. It will be open 7 days a week and they will continue to expand their offerings of classes. Come along to the opening day on Saturday, May 6 from 10.30am to 2pm.

Winter is definitely here, and viruses causing influenza are more active in cold weather. Influenza isn’t just a bad cold; it can be very serious and can kill. Each year many people are unable to attend work or school due to feeling generally unwell with fever, sore throat, coughing etc. Even worse, people with a chronic illness such as asthma, lung or heart problems or diabetes can end up being admitted to hospital due to severe complications. Luckily, we now have tools to minimise the adverse effects. Immunisation is your protection. It helps improve your body’s defence against influenza and it is free for those most at risk. Please check with your general practitioner and get immunised before it attacks. Our Flu vaccine has arrived, we are running walk-in clinics Monday-Friday 11am-2pm. You can also book an appointment on 538 0083. Early vaccination is key to making sure you are protected. It takes 10-14 days to take full effect.

When people do purchase cheaper items that they can afford, they cannot afford regular maintenance so when the car breaks down — there is a big bill. They often do not go to the dentist, and when they do, they need a lot of work done. They delay visiting a doctor, so get more unwell, as do other members of their family. Some of these comments have been taken from ‘Window on Poverty’ NZ Association of a CAB, June 1997, this

People see something they like in a street side van and all too easily, become persuaded by the salesperson with – “it only costs this much each week to purchase”. They do not realise the price of these items are often much higher than in the shops. Home shopping encourages quick decisions. Suburbs with lots of people on low income are subject to lots of temptation. Pamphlets and advertising flyers are put in letterboxes, people often do not compare prices and are happy to sign up for credit as they are able to get what they want. We ask ourselves - “Why do people live outside of their means?” It is clear from some of our clients that visit the Citizens Advice Bureau that people want to have what everyone else has e.g. new laptop, latest cell phone, smart television, newer car. Some folk think - well I am poor today, will be poor tomorrow, so why not treat myself. Sometimes when feeling miserable, people want a warm fuzzy so will buy something they cannot afford or need. Children often put tremendous pressure on parents to have ‘brand’ items; parents want their children to get ahead in life and to be accepted by their peers so they relent. Being poor costs money, e.g. monthly instalments cost more than one annual lump sum payment.

Macleans production goes all-out feline By Nathan Morton
I
t’s one of the most wellknown musicals of all time – a production watched and beloved by many. Now, locals will be given the privilege of experiencing the stage musical CATS live, as Macleans College prepares to put on a show to impress. Macleans has a reputation of producing high standard performances every year, with its portrayal of The Addams Family gracing the college stage last year. This year’s production will once again be directed by Macleans director of performance music Steve Miles, who has been teaching at Macleans College for two years. Come step into 1950s Havana
It’s a spy satire filled to the brim with deliciously witty humour coming to you this May. Presented by Howick Little Theatre and directed by Pam Browne, theatre show Our Man in Havana is based on the story of Jim Wormold – an underemployed vacuum cleaner salesman in 1950s Cuba who is struggling to pay for his teenage daughter’s extravagant lifestyle. When British Secret Service asks him to become their “man in Havana”, he simply can’t afford to say no. There’s just one problem – he doesn’t know anything! In Clive Francis’ adapted version of the original Graham Greene novel, this hilarious story becomes a wonderfully funny and fast-moving romp. Mrs Browne says preparations for the show began early this year, and she hopes the play will provoke deep thinking in audience members. “This directing opportunity is really at the other end of the spectrum; this is a comedy drama with a diverse variety of characters played by eight actors in 45 scenes. Preparing a play is an extended process of absorbing artistic and technical creation from the whole team. “The play develops as a thriller through some lovely comic scenes.” Our Man in Havana screens May 6-27 at Howick Little Theatre.

All sass in burlesque show With an all-new cast, some of the country’s finest vaudeville talent and a live band, the Bananarama Burlesque Show is shaping up to be one spectacular night out. The fun-filled, sassy performance, on May 20 at Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre, beauties: Headliner Bonita Danger Doll harks back to the in this month’s burlesque shows of Bananarama Burlesque old, where beauties show at Uxbridge. and comedians Photo supplied shared the stage, guaranteeing everyone a good time. That was the motivation behind the original production of the show, says producer and owner of Va-Va-Voom Productions, Natalie Hugill, who was inspired by the American burlesque shows of the 30s and 40s. Advance shows of Bananarama Burlesque at Uxbridge sold out in 2015, and now they’re back, Ms Hugill expects tickets will disappear just as fast as they did then – but don’t bring your kids to this one. It’s an R18 show – with variety, creativity and pizzazz – and even better than what it was in 2015. “It was a brilliant night and so much fun last time, and this one is going to be fabulous,” said the Whitford resident, who also stars in the show as Lilly Loca. Hosting the show at Uxbridge is a nostalgic experience, she said. Ms Hugill grew up in east Auckland and first took up drama classes at the centre as part of the Howick Youth Theatre, and now is looking forward to returning to host this month’s burlesque comedy. Tickets cost $29 for general admission, or grab yourself a table seating including a goodie bag and bubbles for $45.

It’s making sure you get to know your breasts and what’s normal for you, and when something isn’t normal, go and see somebody straight away. “You don’t even think to do selfexamination at that age... but it’s highly treatable when it’s caught early.” That’s Eva’s motivation for hosting her first ever Pink Ribbon Breakfast this Saturday, May 6, so that more women like her can be helped in the future. She’ll be making her favourite paleo treats for guests, and is hopeful she can raise $1000 toward the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) after beating her original target of $500 earlier this week. he housing market nationally continues to show signs of normalising, with prices in most regions stabilising, according to real-time data from realestate.co.nz. In Auckland, there were 31.7 per cent more properties available for purchase in April 2017, compared to the same time last year. This jump in housing stock is good news for buyers, with more choice on offer. “Auckland appears to be in a ‘wait-and-see’ mode right now,” says Vanessa Taylor, realestate.co.nz spokesperson. “A cooling in demand and an increase in the number of properties sitting on the market indicates that potential buyers are taking their time and exploring all of their options.” The same can’t be said for the rest of New Zealand, with most regions recording an overall decrease in available housing stock. A total of 12 regions recorded a drop of more than 25 per cent, compared with a year ago. The tighter stock position outside of Auckland is reflected particularly in the Hawke’s Bay, where stock is at an all-time low and the asking price for lifestyle properties is at an all-time high of just over $1.2 million. “Hawke’s Bay has had an attraction for many people for some time and this has been accentuated in the recent past,” says Taylor. Other areas that recorded an all-time low in stock include Gisborne, ManawatuWanganui, Northland and Taranaki. The Wairarapa and Manawatu-Wanganui regions in particular are feeling the supply pinch, with the total number of properties available for purchase in April down 47.1 per cent and 40.3 per cent respectively. Other regions with significant declines in housing stock included Northland, Coromandel, Hawke’s Bay, Central North Island, Taranaki, Nelson, Marlborough, Southland and Otago. Auckland is the only region with total stock up on a year ago and asking prices in the region are virtually unmoved since March this year (up 0.1 per cent).
Residential housing demand down on average Nationally, demand for residential housing has gone down by 13.8 per cent over the past three months. Demand in Auckland is down the most at 31.1 per cent over that period, followed by Waikato at 19.3 per cent. Other regions with a noticeable cooling in demand include Wellington (down 13.4 per cent), Bay of Plenty (down 11.3 per cent), Canterbury (down 9.4 per cent) and Central Otago (down 9.2 per cent). However, demand for property climbed in the Wairarapa (up 31.7 per cent), Southland (up 24.5 per cent) and Gisborne (up 19.4 per cent) over the past three months.
Asking prices stable in most regions The average property asking price in April moved only 2.1 per cent above the previous month nationally, up to $643,460. In most regions,
movement was negligible. The exceptions were the West Coast (up 23.8 per cent to $314,761), Wairarapa (up 14.8 per cent to $425,571) and the Coromandel (up 13.8 per cent to $714,965).
New property listings fall Compared with a year ago, the number of properties newly listed for sale in April dropped 5.3 per cent. “The tight market situation in the Hawke’s Bay is illustrated by the fact that compared with a year ago, new listings in that region in April were down 26 per cent,” said Taylor. Otago, which was down 22.9 per cent, and Southland, 34.2 per cent lower, were among other regions where listings were negative. The Central North Island was one stand-out region where new listings were up significantly, with an increase of 40.7 per cent compared with the same month in 2016.

Feedback Come home Kiwis
I refer to the Australian citizenship changes that were recently reported on. My suggestion to the 200,000 Kiwis who arrived in Australia since 2001 and are not eligible for the pathway to citizenship would be to return to New Zealand. This would help slow immigration down as Kiwis can then fill job vacancies that are currently being taken by immigrants. The tax you pay in New Zealand will eventually be returned to you in benefits that every taxpayer in New Zealand is entitled to. As Godzone, New Zealand is the country that just about everyone wants to come to and which you can call ‘home’. Moreover, being a Kiwi living in New Zealand makes you a patriot! Come home to where you’re wanted! Margaret Scott Pakuranga
Wrong structure there
I was among those residents who, during the earlier round of consultation, suggested the council include redevelopment of the Howick town square as a part of the Howick Village Centre Plan. I did suggest eventual demolition of the Information Centre could be part of this. I would like to thank Gayleen Mackereth for raising awareness of the war memorial sta-

tus of this building. However, I believe a redeveloped square still has strong merit. I am not suggesting the building be demolished tomorrow, that would be a waste of a solid building but this is a longterm plan - 30 years. Some time in the coming decades, it could go. It is simply the wrong structure in the middle of a lovely town square. We need to look ahead to what we can do to ensure Howick continues to be a thriving happy place. I have no local business connections and my thoughts are not towards commercial gain, but rather creating a vibrant setting for local people’s lifestyles - perhaps with a touch of character like one sees in town squares in Buenos Aires for example. By all means, relocate the excellent information service, perhaps to the library building as part of a civic zone. The war memorial could be relocated and redesigned in a way that respects the past, while allowing the citizens of Howick to look forward in regard to our slice of urban life. Wayne Erb Mellons Bay
Dictator won’t succeed
I refer to the article about North Korea and its evil intent and how the US expects ‘the rest of the world would assist in getting rid of oppressive
regimes’. Where was the US in the WWII when Japan was invading South East Asia and Hitler was terrorising the rest of Europe? It wasn’t until Pearl Harbour was bombed that the US got into action and mainly for revenge against Japan. The US wasn’t the saviour of the world in the Second World War as they wanted to make it look like. Now that the US has allowed Japan to re-arm and working with Japan against North Korea, the entire world should be on alert. North Korea will not come to anything as was the case with Lon Nol, Pol Pot, Marcos and every dictator in South East Asia and around the world. Margaret Scott Pakuranga

Might be best to make haste slowly Joseph I
t’s good to hear Joseph Parker spied flaws in Anthony Joshua during his world IBF and WBA heavyweight championship triumph against Wladimir Klitschko in London on Sunday - but exploiting them will be a much more difficult task should he get the chance. Before 90,000 enthralled Wembley fans, both Joshua and Klitschko were impressive in surviving knockdowns before the referee stopped the fight in Joshua’s favour in the 11th round. What added to the appeal was the dignified respect each awarded the other before and after the bout in contrast to the trash talk that too often sullies the sport. Meanwhile Parker should successfully defend his WBO crown in Auckland against Romanian Razvan Cojanu this weekend after Hughie Tyson’s late withdrawal
TIMES FISHING GUIDE:
and, at 2.01m, is 8cm taller than Parker’s 1.93m. With so many British heavyweights performing well, London has become the new boxing mecca. And that’s where Barry and Parker are keen to head in the knowledge that there is indeed gold at the end of that rainbow. Sometime soon, however, Parker will need to face either Joshua or Wilder. And that will be the supreme test for the personable Kiwi who believes he is a better combination puncher than the onedimensional Joshua. He will also have been surprised that having knocked down Klitschko in the fifth round, Joshua tired badly when he was floored in the sixth. However he did finish strongly to claim his KO victory in the 11th. It showed, if proof was needed, that while his stamina may be suspect, Joshua
and is eager to have a crack at Joshua. This despite the punching power that has won the Brit all 19 of his professional fights by knockout. But having won 18 by KO in his own 22 pro fight unbeaten record, Parker backs himself. However he has yet to face giants with the punching power of the Brit and Ukranian who will probably have a rematch before the winner defends his two belts against Parker or WBC champion Deontay Wilder. Giant American Wilder wants to put his WBC title up against Parker’s IBF crown. But Parker’s shrewd manager Kevin Barry wisely sees Britain’s popular Tony Bellew as a better, presumably safer option. It makes sense because as a former light-heayweight, Bellow doesn’t carry the muscle power of Wilder who has won 37 of his 38 fights by KO

has plenty of courage to match his punching power. Another thing that makes him an awkward opponent is that, like Klitschko, he is a southpaw who leads with his right and likes to bang with his left. It’s healthy that Parker wants to unify world heavyweight boxing by going toe to toe with Joshua in the belief he also has a big punch and faster hands. But against explosive punchers like Joshua and Wilder he needs to keep working on his defence and boxing smarts. For while punching hard can knock opponents out, not getting hit stops them doing the same to you. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author
