Vigilance paying off By MARIANNE KELLY

ecurity vigilance in the East Tamaki business community is paying off with offenders being prosecuted and sent to prison. Last November two prolific ‘stair dancers’ – thieves who walk onto commercial premises on the pretext of looking for a job or visiting a staff member – were caught, successfully prosecuted and are now behind bars, says Jane Tongatule, general manager of GETBA (Greater East Tamaki Business Association).
“The business community has become increasingly vigilant in spotting and reporting suspicious behaviour,” she says. “The regular email security alerts we send are helpful in reinforcing this message,” she says. GETBA’s ANPR (automated number plate recognition) cameras, which convey almost instantaneous stolen vehicle ‘hits’ to Police District Command Centre, have proved to be useful as a deterrent, but also in assisting the police to locate stolen vehicles and apprehend offenders as stolen vehicles are often used to commit

crimes, she says. The association, in partnership with local police, provides onsite security audits for local businesses that have been burgled. GETBA crime prevention manager Poutoa Papalii, and local community constable Stewart Green visit East Tamaki sites by appointment and provide a report with recommendations to improve security. “When we last did a follow-up on the audits, 85 per cent of those businesses who had implemented the recommendations had not been re-victimised,” Ms Tongatule says.
In a mid-2015 member survey, crime prevention was perceived as one of the most valued services provided by GETBA, she says. “GETBA has a long-standing comprehensive crime prevention programme, including initiatives that are unique to our area. For example, most geographically based business associations employ a security company to patrol their area. “GETBA has instead developed a security managers’ network that is made up of a number of security companies servicing the area, ➤ Turn to Page 5 local police.

A little cat called Shandy, who went missing just over two years ago, became Half Moon Bay Marina’s much-loved moggy, capturing the hearts of the many people who looked out for him until he was reunited with his owners last month. Shandy tells Marianne Kelly his story.

hristmas Eve 2013, a perfect time to have a kip in Leone and Rob’s trailer boat parked out the front. But whoa, it feels like I’m on the move. Got to get out of here. Good, it’s stopped. I’m out. Boy the boats down here are big and flash. A nice man has taken me home to Takutai Ave, but three day’s rest is enough. I’m off again. January 2014 has arrived but I don’t know that Leone and Rob are walking the streets looking for me. Might as well make myself at home down here at the marina. Here’s dinner all laid on by Sue and the kind people of the Cat Coalition. And there’s a motel. Contrary to popular belief I don’t belong to the motel. But if I sit on the bench in front I might be offered the occasional bed. But how about all these nice people who want to look after me and bring me food – among the many, Rose, Andrew, Murray, Rory, Christine, Glen who brings me dental biscuits, Maria, Sandy and Clive. Not so sure about this dog Archie though. He wants to be friends but I’m hedging my bets dealing out the occasional swipe. But Isabelle’s dog Amina is rather sweet. Rose knows what I like, bringing me Whiskers cat treats and I’m happy to oblige with lots of purring, kisses and head butting. She’s right, I am a loving puss. A

AT HOME: Shandy made himself comfortable at Half Moon Bay Marina.
Canadian man who’s repairing his boat stops to stroke me each morning which makes me purr loudly because it feels so heavenly. Now where’s she taking me? To the vet, but no I am not microchipped. I’m back at the marina and it’s started to rain. I’m cold, hungry and wet but Rose is taking me home to shelter until the weather clears. She’s brought me back again. But what’s my picture doing on that real estate board? How cheeky, and when do I receive my royalties? Time cruises by and I seem to have been adopted as the marina cat. Logan, who has worked here for four years, is very kind and he’s
and jump on Leone’s lap. What’s this, a new loo? But Leone has left the lid up because she knows I like to drink from the toilet. And who’s this new tabby ensconced downstairs? He’s called Mr Bones and he’s pleasant, so I’ll tolerate him if he keeps out of my way. I’m back sleeping on the bed between Leone and Rob. This beats the marina, but I’ve left so many friends behind. Andrew and another lady, I’m told, still walk the marina hoping I might return. I hope the Canadian man doesn’t miss me too much. I used to hunt rabbits when we lived at Papamoa and Leone says I’ve survived because I’m a hunter. Rose used to tell people: “If you are feeling blue or neglected, just go down to sit with the cat at the marina and you will come back feeling better.” People, she says, were attracted to my strong will and ability to take care of myself and others. She’s right. I’m proud of my loving and comforting nature. It was only right that I should spread the love and look how many people have come to know each other as a result. ■■ The Half Moon Bay folks continue to search for Beowulf, a twoyear-old male tabby with no collar but is microchipped and desexed. nick-named me Alex, which is fine by me for the moment. Cynthia has volunteered to pay for flyers to find Leone and Rob. But it’s April 10, 2016 and Leone spots me. She comes back with the cat cage to find 10 people waiting with me. I’m home in Waller Avenue but it’s all strange so I’ll sneak under the barbecue. The back section is deserted so I’ll hide down there. They’ve brought me up to the garage for a couple of nights but I’m glad Leone and Rob are letting me do my own thing. What’s that flash of light? It’s all come back to me. My name really is Shandy. Quick let’s get up the stairs

Comforting traumatised kids Helping society’s forgotten women is something a committed pair of Howick and Botany residents have in the bag – the pikau bag. Mary Ann France and Kim Callard formed Comfort Kidz, an organisation dedicated to helping traumatised children, and they have harnessed the energies of prisoners and retirees to help them do it. Male prisoners at Northland’s Ngawha have been taught pikau bag making. The drawstring duffel bags, which can double as pillows, are packed with toiletries, towels, clothes, books and other items, and given to the Multi-Agency Centre, a Middlemore Hospital facility dealing with traumatised children, bringing together health, welfare and police
– though no uniforms are permitted. “We are trying hard to keep up with the demand, because far too many kids are at the centre every week, and that is a horrible reflection on our society,” Ms France said. Women from the Wiri correctional facility are being taught quilting, the finished items also given to the centre – commonly known as MAC, as are the recycled woollen blankets Ms France beautifully cuts down and trims with satin to create comforters for the children. Ms Callard, a former fashion designer, says it’s been a privilege to see prisoners wanting to contribute something positive. Both women have been passing on their skills and their pikau and comfort
blanket project has recently been backed by the Rotary Club of Highbrook, where Ms France is a member. To speed up the production line, fellow Rotarian and Botany House of Travel director Katrina Cole allowed her premises to become a factory for the day. Quilters, including professional pattern-makers and textile designers, and women from the retirement villages, made around 200 pikau bags on Sunday. While fabrics have been donated, the pair need volunteers, and woollen blanket and cotton cord donors. The relentless workers are also looking for someone to donate labels they can stitch on the Comfort Kidz blankets saying: “This is mine” – where a child can add their name.

Police look into Green Gang scare P
olice are looking into an incident in which drunk teens – possibly from a gang – are alleged to have terrorised a family in Northpark. A post on the Not So PC East Auckland Facebook page said: “Last night (Thursday night, Northpark) at about 7.40pm we had a knock at our door from the “Green Gang” looking for my 15-year-old son who is constantly being harassed by them. “Four of them stood at the door with their bandana’s around their faces asking to see my son. When
my husband asked for them to remove them they kept asking for my son. They were drunk and clearly on something else. The rest of the group were standing on my driveway,” the worried mum said. “When my husband was asking what they wanted with him, they then turned and started walking away. My husband followed as he wanted to ensure that they didn’t come back but I then heard a girl, her name is Brianna, saying “He is gonna die tonight” referring to my son.”
Police told the Times they received no 111 call. “Police are aware of an incident at an address at Northpark on Thursday April 28 and a community police officer has since followed up with the occupants of that address,” police told the Times. “There is no investigation, however community officers will be working with the young people involved to resolve the matter.” Meanwhile the concerned mum said the youths were no older than 15 and “clearly up to no good”.
FREE orthodontic consultation
“This is not the first time that my son has been threatened by this gang. One of my neighbours called the police after she heard all the commotion going on but we are yet to see or hear from the police,” she said. “ Where is the support for our teenagers when we need it. Clearly there is an issue here and if the police had bothered to show up last night, they would have been able to find these kids roaming around the streets and dealt with them all, (whilst they were all still drunk and high).
“I am tired of my son having to walk around constantly looking over his shoulder during the day and now not feeling safe in his own home. We are yet to actually find what the actual problem is and what they are wanting from him. He has no ties to them and does nothing to do with a gang. She said the so-called “Green Gang” is known to police. “Something has to be done before it is too late. I don’t want another child to go through what my child is going through or for my child to be harmed in any way,” she said.

The big fireball mystery I
ntrigue is mounting following the sighting on Saturday of a mysterious bright light in the north western sky. Times staff member Clare McGillivray snapped this photo from her Beachlands home on Saturday night. At first she thought it was just the setting sun reflecting off a wispy cloud but wondered if it was a meteorite as it appeared to leave a large trail as it dropped through the sky. “It took about 10 minutes from first sighting to disappear behind the clouds. During this time it grew from a squiggly line to a straight streak. It appeared to be falling out of the sky or maybe streaking across the atmosphere. Pretty amazing to see,”
she said. And she wasn’t the only one to have spotted the orange streak. There were numerous comments from apparent witnesses on the WeatherWatch. co.nz site. One wrote on the site on Saturday: “Strange light over West Auckland. So about 5.45-6.00pm this evening (30/04/16) I was working at Auckland hospital and hap-
pened to look out one of the windows facing towards west Auckland. “In the far distance I saw what looked like just a bright light and I just assumed it was a plane or something and carried on working – then a few minutes later I looked out and saw that the light now appeared as though it was falling from the sky, it was a very bright orange colour (to be fair there was a sunset this
evening) however it pretty much looked as though it was a fire trail or something – at first I thought perhaps a plane was falling out of the sky however there was no smoke. It lasted for maybe 10-15 mins before disappearing behind some clouds. Very strange.” Another local called it a fireball. “Just watched a bright orange light falling from the sky. On getting our binoculars out it was definitely a fire ball with a large orange streak following it. Stunning and amazing to see. We are in Whitford, south east Auckland and we were looking in a northerly direction.” ■■ Did you see it or get it a picture or video? Email editor@ times.co.nz

“Others include community patrols and body corporate representatives, along with loss prevention managers from some larger East Tamaki businesses. “This group meets monthly and shares intelligence that is invaluable in the collaborative pushback against crime in our area. We have also recently mapped the locations of CCTV cameras which face the road on willing properties within
the East Tamaki business precinct so as to assist the police to apprehend offenders. It has to be a collaborative effort.” GETBA, she says, also educates and informs business owners about ways to reduce their premises’ vulnerability to crime by ‘hardening the target’. We have developed a number of crime prevention resources that have been distributed to businesses and are also accessible through GETBA’s website.

Business burglaries
At the end of 2015 reported burglaries in the East Tamaki business precinct had reduced by 65 per cent since 2006, and burglaries have been trending down since.
GETBA realises “burglaries still happen”. The association’s general manager Jane Tongatule says the impact on businesses that have been the victim of burglaries, both emotionally and financially, is huge. “The real cost goes much further than the immediate effect. “We would, however, like to see the police better financially resourced and the Justice system take a firmer stance with offenders.”

The cenotaph is mainly the result of the effort of returned serviceman John Harris who worked hard to ensure that the locals had their own RSA memorial. Welcoming the assembly, Reverend Neil Hamilton at the Dawn Service and later at the Civic Service said: “Memorials like the life-size model of the one proposed for the community in Beachlands remain shrines for the nation’s grief , erected as places where bereaved families and communities can go to pay their respects.” While most people gathered at the service agree that the new shrine does the community proud, not everyone shares the sentiment. Some residents with a panoramic view of Sunkist Bay are not too happy. This hasn’t stopped the former British Army paratrooper battling on and galvanising support from prominent members of the community. Mr Harris says that while there have been talks of building a memorial in Beachlands for a while, he decided to put it into action. “Last year when we introduced the service for the Gallipoli commemoration, we had to go to Clevedon to place our wreaths. This year we can have them here,” he says proudly pointing to the border of poppies installed by school children. With the help of a committee that includes a member of the Subritzky shipping family, local iwi, Manukau Beautification Trust, Air Training Corps and the Duder family, the memorial was built five weeks ago. After Mr Harris designed a model with the inscription of the poem `Spirit of Anzac’, he was told the temporary structure would cost $2000. “I didn’t know where that money was going to come from until the Manukau Beautification Trust came forward and paid for it,” he says. “Now we as a committee will work with the community and the council towards fund-raising for a permanent memorial that will cost around $50,000.”

Carpet layers become leaders in retail trade F
ourteen years ago Colin Dunning and Mike Wyber who worked together as carpet layers came to the mutual conclusion that it was time to spread their wings. Among the retail outlets which used their skills was Carpet Savers in Panmure. When they heard it was on the market they decided, along with Colin’s wife Wendi, to buy the business which at that time specialised in seconds and roll ends. Then in 2008 another business the two carpet layers had worked for, Factory Carpets was on the market. Buying it involved a move just around the corner. These days the 800 square metre property is the hub for a busy flooring business. The biggest proportion of their trade from day one has included property managers, such as real estate companies, Barfoot & Thompson, Crockers Property and Ray White. “They have been our clients for years,” Wendi says. “In that way we have been quite lucky and it is the biggest part of our business.” However their retail trade spreads far and wide. “We mostly do house
loads,” Wendi says. “It seems to be every 10 years that people decide to change their carpets. So we have many repeat customers. “It’s a steady retail market. There are no swings and roundabouts.” While they get the odd purchase from Auckland’s North Shore, much of their retail work is in the Eastern Suburbs, such as Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St Heliers. In the other direction their team of carpet layers can at any one time be working in Pakuranga, Howick and as far south as Manurewa and Pukekohe. Factory Carpets carries the Godfrey

Cow comes home There was no mournful mooing to be heard but there were lots of excited exclamations of crime solving when some local heroes found a long lost cow. Recently, young Farm Cove party-goers had finished celebrating a fifth birthday at the Doull household and decided to burn off some energy at a nearby suburban reserve. When they ventured into their favourite bush hideaway, they discovered a rather lonely looking cow. There was much excitement and the children raced back to the house to tell Danielle and Graeme Doull. “We still had about 10 children at the party and everyone traipsed up to the park to watch Graeme bring the cow home,” Ms Doull says. The fake farm creature is a
model cow and everyone was perplexed at how it had turned up in the neighbourhood park. Within a few hours of social networking, the mystery was solved and volunteer detectives identified the cow had been rustled from Ambridge Rose Villa earlier this year. And, to prove it really is a small world – Ms Doull knew a family member of the owners of the Pakuranga Road rest home and she gave her a call. The owner of Ambridge Rose Villa, Allan Sargeant promptly visited the Doull’s home, armed with some dairy delights to thank the rescue squad. “Everyone is udderly thrilled the youngsters found the cow and the family tracked down her home,” says Mr Sargeant. A rurally nice ending!

Hirst range of solution dyed nylon (polyester) carpets which includes the Feltex brand. Wendi says they deal with mainly cut piles which don’t fade and are easy to clean. Three years ago they were among the first carpet businesses in the country to join the Godfrey Hirst Flooring Foundation. The manufacturer, the largest in New Zealand, set up the foundation for independent outlets. “Because there are so many of us we can get better prices, they run joint advertising campaigns and it allows us to compete with the big Australian chains,” Wendi says. Colin and Wendi are longtime residents of Howick and they are avid supporters of their local newspaper the Howick and Pakuranga Times. “We live in Howick and it’s our local paper,” Wendi says. “So we have advertised in it for as long as we have been here [in Panmure]. It gets our name out there. “We’ve dealt with a number of people from the Times over the years and they are all good to work with.”

Coolness to the air DR TOOT Autumn weather has arrived and there is a slight coolness to the air. Consequently market day now starts in the dark for set up so all is ready for shoppers at 8am. Fresh autumn produce, including pears, kiwifruit, raspberries and juicy fresh oysters are now available. Our Anzac flags adorned the village streets for Anzac Day and our poppy display ‘appeared’ in Fencible Walk Park. The Dawn Parade is a great time for remembrance and this year was no exception. A wild weather forecast put a damper on Town & Country Day, but the sun arrived and Howick Village was a great place to be. The market, always popular, had the added attraction of Ceroc and West Coast Swing dancers and proved popular. Businesses in town themed their windows for the day with Cachet, Spillers Hammer Hardware and High Tide receiving prizes for their displays.
The shopping promotion saw Trish McLaughlan win a dinner party for six in her home prepared by professional chef Gary Francis. What a wonderful night they had! This weekend is Mother’s Day so take the opportunity to take Mum out to lunch or dinner at one of our fabulous eateries. Best Business Awards, where we celebrate our shining stars in business, is coming up in June. Members of the public are invited to nominate their favourite over a range of categories. Details and nomination forms are online at www.howickvillage.co.nz. Last year the introduction of Best Citizen category was possible, thanks to local businessman and resident John Roy. Think about who you would like to nominate as an outstanding citizen. SHINGLES
Shingles is the condition when someone who has had chickenpox gets a similar rash on one side of the person’s body. It is due to the Varicella Zoster virus which travels down a nerve and presents with small vesicles/blisters along the skin area the nerve supplies. Shingles most commonly occurs in people older than 60 but can occur in younger people and in some occasions happens as a response to the body’s immune system being stressed. Some reports say the life-time risk is 1-in-5 people to get shingles. Usually a person has only one attack but some can have up to three separate attacks. Before the blistering rash appears on the skin a person may experience pain, itch or tingles in the site 1-to-5 days prior. Fever, headache and chills are common other symptoms. Those people in contact with someone with shingles who have NOT had chickenpox could develop chickenpox from exposure to shingles. Shingles is slightly less contagious than chickenpox. Ideally if someone has the beginnings of shingles an antiviral medication called Acyclovir on a newly funded medication Valaciclovir can be used. The earlier this is started the better. Complications of shingles include post-herpetic neuralgia (pain) which can be managed with pain-relieving medications in most instances. There is a vaccine called Zostavax which is available for adults aged over 50 to prevent shingles and reduce the risk of postherpetic neuralgia. This vaccine has been used overseas since 2006. There is a charge for this vaccine, talk to your doctor to see if it is suitable for you.

ew Zealanders will be the first to hear orchestral music inspired by a 19th century conman and a giant of 20th century literature when the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra premiers two works. Aotearoa Plus will feature Grammy Award winning conductor and composer Bramwell Tovey leading the orchestra from a honky-tonk piano for the international debut of his orchestral work Time Tracks. The new music draws on his 2011 opera The Inventor which tells the true story of Sandy Keith, a scam artist turned ship bomber who killed dozens of people in a dock explosion in 1875. Tovey says Sandy Keith’s personality mixed affable charm with violence and orchestral music is well placed to tell his dark story. “Here’s a man who blew up a ship, killed nearly 100 people then shot himself, and lived for five days until he died. Quality, ingenuity always in demand A
ll New Zealand businesses – large, small and innovative – need markets to sell in to, and this year we’re seeing many wins in the international trade arena. We’ve signed the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), NZ’s largest trade agreement, worth $2.7 billion a year to our GDP by 2030; and agreed with the European Union, our third-largest trading partner, to start working toward free trade agreement negotiations. Red meat producers have gained a huge competitive advantage due to China recognising our halal regulation and certification regime. It’s a market that bought 33 per cent of our total halal-certified meat in the year to last September. We have also opened doors for our agriculture businesses in China by signing the Agricultural Growth Partnership. The partnership is about sharing New Zealand’s agricultural expertise and creating more commercial opportunities in areas such as livestock technology, animal health and disease control. Additionally, three Kiwi businesses achieved significant access to lucrative Chinese markets. Fonterra celebrated its partnership with Beingmate

through an environmental cooperation project and the development of the Anmum brand in China. Alliance meanwhile will have exclusivity of supply for branded products into several high-end Chinese hotels, supermarkets and restaurants. Zespri also celebrated the start of the new kiwifruit sea-
son in China and its new status as importer of record in China. In 2018, our economy will be boosted by $50 million thanks to a successful bid by Tourism New Zealand to bring 10,000 Amway China executives to holiday in Queenstown under its corporate rewards scheme. The tourists will arrive during Autumn 2018, bringing a steady flow of income to Queenstown over four consecutive months. This sends a strong message that we can be a big player in the incentives market and it’s another chance to show off the great tourist locations New Zealand has to offer. China is already our second-largest and fastest growing tourism market – generating $1.5b in 2015. This contract will grow that market. Trade is fundamental to New Zealand’s future economic success. The TPP is a crucially significant trade deal for our nation and that is why I am holding a public meeting to give locals an opportunity to discuss it on Thursday, May 19, at Pakuranga Golf and Country Club, 199 Botany Road, Botany, from 7pm. Delwyn’s involvement began in 1988, when her then 8 year old son was 40% burned in an explosion. As a result she established the Burn Support Charitable Trust www.burns.org.nz. Alan was severely burned in a commercial plane crash in 1963 in New York. Rescued from his seat (hanging upside down in the subsequent fire), he lost the top of his head, his ear, eye, nose, a thumb and several fingers. He spent the next five years in hospital undergoing 52 surgeries (now numbering up in the high 70’s), accumulating a medical file one foot thick and dying twice. Over the intervening years, along with establishing a worldwide organisation ‘The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors’ (www.phoenix-society.org), he developed many concepts, theories and strategies to help disfigured people cope with the many problems and challenges facing them in their day to day lives. He has summarised these in his book ‘The Beauty of Disfigurement – How to Cope with Looking Different’.

ne of the legacies of the Roast Busters case is the prospect of New Zealand’s first sexual violence court, said Dr Jackie Blue, Equal Employments Opportunities Commissioner. The former National MP, who is passionate about issues of equality, was a guest speaker at the Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS) third Community Safety Breakfast meet held at the Howick Club on Wednesday. “Specialist judges have training in the areas of domestic and sexual violence, which is really helpful compared to the times when the victims easily got re-victimised,” she said. While the West Auckland teen group that called themselves Roast Busters bragged about their conquests by posting online videos of having sex with drunk, underage girls got away without facing any charges, a sexual violence court would have held the abusive young men accountable, albeit in a different environment. Giving an overview of different initiatives, she spoke about another pilot sexual violence prevention programme for school children from ages nine to 13 in around 40 schools in New Zealand. “They will be taught about healthy relationships and what is not acceptable,” she said. Pointing out that cases of reported violence to the police are only the tip of the iceberg, she shared a personal experience. “You don’t have to belong to a particular background to be a victim of violence. I was a general practitioner, 29 years of age, and a victim of violence,” she said. She also referred to the female MPs in Parliament who bravely came out in the open last year, revealing they were victims of sexual violence. “There may be people in this very room who must be victims of violence. “Unfortunately our laws have not stopped violence against women but now there are companies like Warehouse that have introduced a family violence policy which entitles extra leave entitlement and other support services to victims,” she said.

Story of animals By Marianne Kelly
A stylised version of The Jungle Book will be presented by the senior members of the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre. It’s a version of Rudyard Kipling’s original story written for the stage by John Hartoch. Leads include Amanda Pu (13) playing the snake Kaa, Sophie Fooks (13) as the tiger Shere Khan, and 13-year-old Michael Wighton playing the abandoned ‘man cub’ Mowgli the boy. The rest of the 24-strong cast will play creatures of the forest and will interchange from the chorus to narrators. Director Kelly Scott says there is a lot of emphasis on the achieving the physical characterisation of becoming the animals. Amanda says she has had to concentrate on speaking slowly with emphasis on an ‘sss’ to emulate the hissing snake. She’s also had to learn to use a puppet head as the snake’s mouth. Sophie says she’s done a lot of work, remembering to use her hands to drop low to the ground as a tiger. “Also I’ve had to make my voice low and growly. I’m the villain so I’ve had to work on a threatening presence on the stage.” Meanwhile Michael says the boy, an orphan raised by wolves, “can be a bit whiney at times”. ■■ The Jungle Book is performed at 7.30pm on May 26 and 27, at 4pm and 7.30pm on May 28, and at 2pm on May 29. It’s suitable for children five years of age and upwards. For more information phone HCYT on 5374943 or email hcyt@xtra.co.nz.
Elias eyes more adventure E
lias Worrall-Bader has returned from the 2012 Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeaders’ Forum determined to go on a Peter Blake expedition. “This year the expedition was on the Auckland Islands and I’ve heard completely amazing and unimaginable things,” he says. “Next time it could be in the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands or the Kermadecs, and I furiously aspire to get on this trip. From there I’d hope to be part of Blake Ambassadors which would further my science university degree and give me access to Antarctica.” The Year 12 Howick College student joined student leaders from throughout the country at the forum in Nelson last month. Some of the activities included kayaking in a marine reserve with orcas. He tramped through Brook Waimarama
Sanctuary, the largest sanctuary enclosed by a pest-proof fence in New Zealand, and the Abel Tasman National Park. The young people joined representatives from the Department of Conservation (DoC) in a hypothetical marine reserve debate in which Elias joined a team arguing for tourism and “we triumphed”. “We were also welcomed onto the local marae, taught much on Maori culture and treated to an excellent hangi,” he says. The students were able to question respected marine health scientists at the Cawthron Institute which, Elias says, was “incredibly enlightening, especially in the field of ocean acidification, a very pressing issue often lost under the blanket of climate change”. Elias made a presentation on science’s role in the future of

environmentalism to Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith. In correlation with Sir Peter Blake’s values, Elias says the forum concentrated on pro-
moting leadership. “From this forum I have learnt an astounding range and depth of things that I hope to employ, both within Howick College in my position in the environment committee and as a student representative, and in the larger community.” The forum chaperones, he says, were an ongoing source of inspiration, the project manager Jacob Anderson a former house captain at Howick College. “This invaluable experience also further instilled in me a love for the environment and yearning to preserve it, something I will carry through my life. “Fellow delegates from around New Zealand were also amazing in themselves as company, each completely unique with a different and inspiring background.”

service and advocacy. Guests included District Governor Janette Irvine, past District Governor Maureen Heine, and other members of the District Committee. Members of the newlyformed Macleans College Z Club helped to cater for the guests. Entertainment of provided by a student lion dance group and a string quartet.

SUPPORTING BOTANY TOWN CENTRE FOR 15 YEARS
Could a shopping centre be the focus of a sense of place, purpose and wellbeing in our communities? For many locals, Botany Town Centre is just that. It has been the heart of our community for 15 years – and as the centre celebrates its milestone fifteenth birthday this month, we take a look at what makes the place tick.
A
n estimated eight million people visit Botany Town Centre each year to shop, eat, run errands, take part in the many events and celebrations it has hosted over the years, as well as spending time with family and friends in a safe and friendly environment. Botany Town Centre takes a leaf out of the true town centre concept, and has become more than just a shopping centre to its community – it is known as an urban oasis amongst a bustling and vibrant suburb for its extensive gardens, greenery, fruit trees and open spaces. The centre is uniquely positioned to play host to a multitude of cultural festivities and occasions, which have not only left an imprint on locals’ hearts, but created bonds and many fond memories for regular locals. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has an affinity for the centre and has been a tremendous support for the many initiatives. Jami-Lee says, “For 15 years Botany Town Centre has been a vital part in the growth and development of the local community. It has transformed over the years from just a shopping centre to somewhere locals can come to enjoy the space, eat and meet friends.” The centre’s annual Community Day, which accomodates four dozen local organisations and service providers, speaks directly to the needs and aspirations of the community’s melting pot of cultures. Mark van Wijk, Community Day organiser and ongoing Botany supporter says, “The community-minded spirit that is evident at Botany Town Centre has enabled people to

Locals of all ages get the chance to interact with their two- and four-legged heroes, while learning about the dayto-day activities of emergency services. As well as the yearly favourites, Botany Town Centre is focused on ensuring the interests and needs of all in the community are met through a variety of events and support campaigns – from hosting Sensory Santa sessions (which provides a safe environment for children with sensory disorders to interact with Santa in a quiet environment), movie premieres, outdoor cinema screenings, busking competitions, local talent shows and, in a recent shopping centre first for New Zealand, a Dog Adoption Drive that made national news.
Botany Town Centre invited DC Rescue Dogs to help bring together dog-lovers and homeless pups and educate people of all ages on dog safety. The dogs were rescued from overrun Auckland pounds and introduced to would-be adoptive families in a safe and accessible environment. The adoption drive saved 15 dogs from death row and locals made generous donations of kennels, bedding and food. Botany Town Centre continues to work collaboratively with its community to develop initiatives for residents to get the most out of the Town Centre, its busy bus hub and to make the area an even better place to live, work and play.

Making the most of the leaf-lined streets surrounding Botany Town Centre, the annual Summer Fun Run and Walk (now in its eighth year) is a key date in the calendar for many locals – more than 500 people take part annually. The event boasts a number of veteran participants and offers a boost for people of all fitness levels, with the option of walking or running a 5km or 10km circuit which starts and finishes at the centre. proud to be a part of Botany Town Centre
All progressive communities are sustainability-minded, and Botany Town Centre’s work towards a greener future dates back to the centre’s opening in 2001, and has grown through multiple community campaigns and business sustainability initiatives. A prominent milestone was the centre’s 1 + 1 = TREE campaign, which funded the planting of thousands of native trees by local schoolchildren. The (literally ground-breaking) initiative had an indelible effect on the child participants, who can be proud that the trees they planted stand maturely 10 years on.

says of the garden, “A project like this was a first for New Zealand shopping centres, and we loved going back to our roots as a community hub and re-centralising the green and botanist ideals of Botany Town Centre. It’s now being used not just as a food producer but a tool for education by in-centre childcare services and some of the surrounding schools. “We also have the Heritage Roses behind New World and near Briscoes and we continue to support bird life by maintaining our storm water pond near Te Irirangi Drive.” Indeed, the centre’s sustainability focus is in its foundations. New Zealand’s largest retail development when it opened 15 years ago, the centre accommodates environmental principles relating to building orientation, storm water management, and measures to reduce light production and water use alongside optimizing energy performance. For its efforts the centre earned a coveted International Council of Shopping Centres award for Design in 2003, making it the only southern hemisphere winner that year. The centre’s approach to environmental social governance (ESG) management encompasses strategies to reduce waste, energy and water use. A comprehensive waste recycling strategy is in place and over the last 5 years Botany Town Centre and its retailers have diverted over 3,900 cubic metres of cardboard, office paper, loose plastic film, containers and glass from the landfill. This is equivalent to one and half Olympic sized swimming pools of recyclable material! Botany Town Centre supports this service through complimentary mobility equipment, while a selection of cafes provide free coffee or tea. A pattern for success in the digi-fashion age
F
rom the on-trend and fashionable array of apparel stores found in the appropriately named Fashion Pavilion, to the everyday, fresh and hip style found down The Lane, Botany Town Centre is arguably one of Auckland’s foremost destinations when it comes to updating the wardrobe. The centre’s resident stylist, and self-confessed ‘mum of the burbs’, Kerry Finlay is a known and welcome presence both in-centre and on Botany Town Centre’s website through her popular seasonal trend blogs. Of her role as the centre’s stylist, Kerry says, “The biggest and most satisfying part of my role is in taking the fear out of shopping, by bridging the gap between shoppers and retailers. Feeling confident that you can get your clothing purchases right, and knowing that you don’t need to spend loads of money is the best skill that I can impart. “I’m a Howick girl and a mother of three, so I really do feel at home at Botany Town Centre, and love the sense of community there. It’s such a treat when wandering around the centre to have a shopper come up to me raving about a piece of jewellery or clothing that I had previously recommended.” Fostering young creative talent in the community has also been
a priority for the centre, which is evident in the recent Botany Design Awards which gave aspiring local fashion designers the opportunity to pursue their dream careers. Young entrants were able to showcase their designs at the centre and past winners have received career kickstarters in the form of scholarships and industry work experience. The centre’s fashion-forward focus also embraces the vast digital world. In 2013, Botany became the first shopping centre in the country to launch a predominantly digitally focussed competition in which the winning candidate could shop for free, in turn creating ‘shopping haul’ video blogs about their clothing, accessory and homeware purchases. The centre was thrilled to appoint the winning vlogger, Britney Hazeldine, as an ambassador and resident vlogger. Britney creates regular collaborative YouTube videos showcasing her shopping excursions to the centre. The competition and subsequent appointment helped to kick-starting Britney’s career; she says “It’s been really fun for me, it’s such a good way to connect to the community, especially the centre’s younger customers.” Through her work with the centre and her own website, Scout & Company, Britney’s online presence has grown dramatically.

owner Sewing Bee Clothing Alterations, Dry Cleaning and Curtain Making at Botany Town Centre, has an amazing collection of 5000 colourful threads that is a match for any clothing alteration garment and over 1000 heavy cotton threads for jean alteration. Having worked with one of New Zealand’s top designers as a pattern maker, Gigi offers

Gigi has a lot more plans up her well-tailored sleeve as she is excited about starting sewing classes for young girls. “I plan to have them in three batches from the elementary to pattern making and tailoring for the elderly,” she says as she wants to share her knowledge with the younger generation. Become a trained patroller with Botany Crime Watch and help us build a safer community.
Zealand Institute of Education and MSL Training, Lollipops Educare, Our Place Educare and the weekly Botany Tots storytime session, the centre accommodates every facet of life. As the saying goes, ‘behind every great community is a great library’ and the Botany Library holds an impressive range of books, CDs, DVDs and other collections. It is also frequented by book lovers of all ages during the much-loved kid’s club and adult’s book clubs. Locals will also find the library is home to a Justice of the Peace service. Creating an enjoyable and safe environment for local families is a vital part of the mix and the centre has enjoyed an ongoing working relationship with the community constable. To ensure the community remains safe and has access to support when needed, the centre has sponsored tenancies for the Botany Crime Watch Patrol and the recently re-opened Citizens Advice Bureau. Over the years the Centre has hosted many local schools, charities and community groups both in Town Square and also in The Conservatory where the various groups have been able to access the free community site to raise funds or highlight their cause. The ongoing relationship with these groups and the Botany community is at the heart of what Botany Town Centre is all about.

s people and society grow and change, so too should the focal points of our communities. For those in the eastern suburbs, Botany Town Centre has assumed the role of community custodian for the past 15 years. It has grown with the community, listened to its needs and matured into the vibrant civic heart it is today. Can a town centre create an emotional connection with its community? Botany Town Centre seems to have found the success formula through not only its design, layout and range of shops and services, but by ensuring everything it does and stands for in the community has heart and purpose. There is more to this centre than simply being a place to browse the shops and grab a coffee – it’s a place of commonality for the surrounding far-reaching and culturally diverse suburbs. Central to its ethos as a town centre and in addition to a vast retail offering, Botany Town Centre plays host to a range of vital services and amenities that are relevant to a multicultural, constantly diversifying area. “We have been shopping at Botany Town Centre for 3 years, we enjoy how accessible the layout is and well positioned the shops are.” – Sarah
We spent some time chatting to the Botany community and asked them what they love most about coming to the centre. This is what they had to say!
at Botany Town Centre
“I have been shopping at Botany Town Centre for years, more than 10 in fact. I started coming here when I worked at one of the retail stores in the centre and have never stopped. My family and I love the outdoor areas and coming to the community garden.” – Mandy “We have been coming to Botany Town Centre for a number of years. We live quite far away but always like to pop back to the centre. We were just saying to each other how well set out everything is, it definitely beats other shopping centres in our view which is why we choose to travel here. We love the gardens and outdoor area... oh, and the coffee!” – Graham
“I have been shopping at Botany Town Centre for 6 years – I’m usually here every week, 3 times a week. My kids have virtually grown up here. My favourite thing is the outdoor open space down Garden Lane, it’s my family’s little hang out. We attend many of the events that take place here, like the recent dog adoption day.” – Nina
KC11639
“We’ve been coming to Botany Town centre our whole life! We busk at the centre every second week and some of the money we raise is donated to Red Cross. Our favourite memories of the centre relate to our performances here thanks to the vibe and the people – we have never had a negative comment. We remember the centre’s Busk-a-thon competition and would love to see this return!” – Ben “We have been coming to Botany Town Centre since we were babies, so at least 15 years. We love the selection of shops and the food! We come here every week, and our friends live near-by so we can easily just catch the bus into the centre.” – Jack “We have been shopping here for 15 years – it’s our local. It’s very accommodating to our kids and we love sitting upstairs and having coffee and knowing that our kids are safe. They always have things to do for our kids! We recently came to the Panda Party and it was so much fun. I have also had my children’s birthday party here so it’s a place that holds many fond memories.” – Mayada KC11638

My son’s life is at stake here
I
’m writing about my concern for some of the building practices that are currently happening around the Pakuranga/Howick area. Next to our property they are developing a small private lane and have planted seven new two-storey houses and have kept one existing house from the 50s. So instead of having two neighbours, we now – or will in the very short future – possess eight new households on our back fence. If the construction and the continuous swearing wasn’t enough, or the fact that these houses are, yes, technically one metre off the boundary (not including the eves), it’s pretty intimidating having two storey buildings looking into your once-private courtyard. The law states that the construction site must be secure but I witnessed last night when I went to check on my chooks that the whole back fence was missing, They have taken liberty and removed it. It concerns me that we are now exposed to the Pakuranga Highway and that this gaping hole is facing my four-year-old’s bedroom which has access via a door to the backyard. My dog, my chickens, can now freely roam the pleasures of morning grid-

lock and what about the safety of my pre-schooler? I bet when my dog is run over or the ranger takes it to the pound, I will be the one charged, and when my kid gets bowled by a car on east Auckland’s busiest roads, will the developer pay for his funeral? I am disgusted at the lack of respect or communication from the developer – a child’s safety is at stake here. Karin Smal, Frames Today
A pact with the devil?
According to Wikepedia, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the least corrupt), only 46 coun-
tries out of 169 countries make it past five. New Zealand ranks nine. Five out of the 12 countries signed up to the TPP rank five or below which means there is a massive amount of corruption not only within the TPP but worldwide which begs three questions. 1.Why is NZ not ranked 10? 2 Have NZ along with the other six least corrupt countries made a pact with the devil signing the TPP agreement? 3 Is there a better way of running a country than democracy, dictatorships or republics? hat if it happened in our lifetime, asked D.T. Morgan, director of Harlequin Musical Theatre’s production of the classic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. With a clever turn of costuming and characters he’s done just that, revolving the plot around a media scrum of reporters with I phones, television cameras and the
veteran journalist writing in a notebook. D.T Morgan says with the rise and fall of most rock stars, at first the media love them; then the people love them. But when the media turns against them so do the people And so the edgy production that has wowed global audiences for more than 40 years has been turned into a scintillating story of the last days of Jesus Christ more than 2000 years ago in 2016 terms. It’s Bryce Kehoe’s second show and first leading role. With a superb command of pitch he takes Jesus through the range of emotions from a flare of anger at the money lenders and merchants in the temple to the final “it is finished” as he hangs on an all too realistic cross. powerful portrayal as Judas, the man who will betray Jesus, dominates throughout, but none more so than the lead-up to his suicide. It’s a spine-tingling performance as his voice descends into a piteous cry that Jesus has murdered him. The harrowing scenes are tempered by Sarah Venville’s pure tones as Mary Magdalene declaring Everything’s Alright, the bouncy energetic choreography of Kimberley Cousins’ dancers, and the ebbs and flows from the seven-piece band. Sam Iosefo’s booming voice as Caiaphas, the poncey antics of Quintin Anderson as Herod and Rory Finnemore’s heartfelt portrayal of Pilate provide a commanding presence of authority. The cast of more than 40
actors, singers, dancers and musicians fill the theatre, not just with the memorable Lloyd Webber/Rice score, but at times with raw emotion that carries the audience and demonstrates the depth to which these performers have absorbed their roles. It’s a breathtaking interpretation of one of the greatest stories ever told. ■■ Jesus Christ Superstar plays at 7.30pm until May 14 with a 4pm matinee on May 8 and 2pm on May 7 and 14 at the Harlequin Musical Theatre, 563 Pakuranga Road (behind the Howick Community Centre), Pakuranga. In support of New Zealand Sign Language week the theatre is inviting deaf and hearing audiences to an interpreted performance on May 11.

he most recent South-East SHA identified in the 10th and last tranche of SHAs is two Housing New Zealand properties in Whitford Road, Northpark The development of numbers five and seven Whitford Road, just around the corner from Union Road, is intended to provide up to six new social housing dwellings and construction is expected to be complete within two years. However, plans for the sites are not final because Housing New Zealand is currently assessing its coordinated land development strategy in Auckland to better use its significant land holdings. Detailed site and design investigations are underway across all its SHAs.

The seventh tranche includes land adjacent to the Voda-
fone (formerly Telstra Clear) Events Centre in Manukau. Gaze Property Partnerships plans to develop number 834 Great South Road and number 10 Pacific Events Centre Drive into more than 800 new houses including retirement living, potential student accommodation and/or hotels. The development, called 8 Pacific, involves a currently vacant master-planned area of 9.2 hectares. Housing types are expected to range from smaller two-bedroom terraces, townhouses and apartments to larger four- plus-bedroom homes. Construction is targeted to start as early as possible in this year’s earthworks season. Gaze intends to have the first residential housing ready for habitation by the end of 2017. Nearby employment opportunities include the growing Wiri industrial area, the new

An undeveloped property at 178 Point View Drive, East Tamaki Heights, drew criticism from local residents when its zoning was changed to Mixed Housing Suburban under the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan and was subsequently announced as an SHA. Development has now started. In a response to Times questions, Elizabeth Wells, SHA programme director consenting, said the Point View Drive developer was granted consent for 68 residential lots and was providing seven for the affordable component (10 per cent) which meets the Order in Council requirements. The size of the lots for the affordable dwellings ranges from 142 to 241 square metres, she said.
Out-sourcing needed for surge By Marianne Kelly Demand for building consents in the Super City is so high that Auckland Council has enlisted consents teams from Wellington and Porirua to help manage the workflow. Consent demand has been relentless, says Auckland Council’s building control processing manager, Doug Naylor with a record 23,220 building consent applications received in the past year, up by 12 per cent. Mr Naylor has been involved with building consent lodgements for 27 years and says this is the highest surge of applications he’s seen in that time. The Wellington and Porirua City Councils have been contracted, initially for 12 months, to avoid unnecessary delays with Auckland applications. The increase in consents has been partly caused by the

of the Accord, but are now averaging 290 a month. Over the next 14 years more than 94,000 new greenfield and brownfield dwellings and sections are known to be in the development pipeline. At the end of 2015 there was 6.5 years of ‘ready to go’ zoned and bulk serviced greenfield land in Auckland, just below the desired average seven years supply set by the Auckland Plan. Although this supply is being consumed by new development, it is being replaced with SHAs such as Huapai, Whenuapai and Scott Point which are now live zoned, have bulk infrastructure and are beginning to develop. A further 3.95 years of greenfield supply is being processed through plan variations at places such as Flat Bush, Oraha and Crows Roads and Redhills to add to the ‘ready to go’ supply and maintain a seven-year average.

establishment of 154 Special Housing Areas (SHAs) across Auckland with a potential yield of 56,000 new houses. The latest monitoring report and release of the 10th tranche of SHAs shows that 27,708 new houses and sections have been achieved compared with a target of 26,250. Building and Housing Minister, Dr Nick Smith says the longest and strongest growth period in Auckland since the Auckland Housing Accord was signed is averaging 26.5 per cent. “We now have an all-time record investment of $3.4 billion in residential housing in the latest annual data to February,” he says. The most encouraging aspect of the latest report is the surge in the number of new sections now flowing from SHAs, Dr Smith says. These numbers averaged 52 a month in the first two years

However, information on the real estate website said the 20 lots currently up for tender ranged from 5661662 square metres. SHA information on the Auckland Council website says the Point Drive subdivision will involve similarsized sections against the existing urban area, with gradually larger sections moving up towards Point View Drive. It’s being developed by Intersection Properties with assistance from Ross Reid Contracting. It will include significant landscaping and identified building platforms. Large trees will define the ridgeline, consistent with the rest of the ridgeline, and a public pedestrian pathway will be created through the development to Point View Drive.
Tranche two
The Flat Bush strategic area forms a dog leg from the eastern suburban boundary off Ormiston Road, extending west along the south of Flat Bush School Road through to rural land along the northern side of existing development in Redoubt Road. A plan variation was lodged in December 2014 to rezone this area to Mixed Housing Urban, Mixed Housing Suburban and Neighbourhood Centre zones for a potential of 1700 sections. It’s intended that some of this area be developed into approximately 4467 new sections and dwellings.
Tranche one
Tranche one involves two SHAs on Flat Bush School and Murphy’s Roads. ■■ A block of land to the
north of Flat Bush School Road and east of Brookview Drive is controlled by Auckland Council CCO, Auckland Council Property Limited (ACPL). It’s earmarked for approximately 400 new household units and sites offering a mix of housing types. The land is vacant. It is zoned Terraced Housing and Apartments under the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan. ACPL says the site will help to achieve Auckland Plan objectives and help consolidate the future of the adjoining Ormiston Town Centre currently under development. ACPL will enter an agreement with a private sector partner to develop the land. ■■ A development at the corner of Flat Bush School Road and Murphy’s Road
at Flat Bush running north to Ormiston Road is for approximately 275 new homes or sites, expected to be developed over three to four years. The land currently consists of large rural residential blocks. It is zoned Mixed Housing Suburban and Terrace Housing and Apartment Buildings under the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan. The development is expected to provide a mix of housing types, matched to current shortages. It will be an extension of quality residential development already taking place at Flat Bush. Resource consent was granted in March 2014 at 231, 245, and 252 Murphys Road, Flat Bush for works associated with Stage 1 of the Tamaki South East Branch sewer extension.

Girls are Div 3 champs S
aint Kentigern College have stolen the limelight in the New Zealand Secondary Schools water polo national championships. In the division 3 competition in Hamilton last week, Saint Kentigern girls’ premier team pulled through with a narrow win against Hamilton Girls’ High in the final to take the title of national champions. After an inauspicious start to their campaign, losing the opening match 4-10 to Hamilton Girls’ High, Saint Kentigern bounced back with three straight victories over Carmel B, John Paul College and Takapuna Grammar. Making their way to the semi-final, a close win over Diocesan B saw Saint Kentigern through to meet Hamilton Girls’ for a rematch in the final. Abbey Keyte and Christina Middlebeek-Harrison were named among the five most outstanding players of the tournament. Having already placed fourth in the Auckland competition and third in the North Island Championships, the premier boys’ water polo team achieved the best result in the College’s history in the national competition in Wellington.

Saint Kents trounce Scots The blue powerhouse that is the Saint Kentigern College 1st XV Rugby team are on top of the scoreboard yet again having won the 2016 Presbyterian Schools’ Quadrangular tournament with a commanding victory over Scots College. Despite being so early in the season, Saint Kentigern College have proved themselves as serious contenders for the National Top Four finals after demolishing Scots College 57-3 in the tournament final last week. This is the biggest win in the final since Saint Kentigern beat Saint Andrew’s 86-3 in 2014. With a 24-3 lead at halftime, Saint Kentigern showed few apparent weaknesses against a strong but unprepared Scots side. Sterling on the money C
laims by Australian commentator and former Kangaroo rugby league great Peter Sterling that the Warriors lack mental toughness cannot be disputed. Too often they sing the same old tune about learning from their mistakes and then go out the next week and repeat them. And too often the media direct the blame at coach Andrew McFadden. The latest saga, when five players had a late night out on the town in the wake of their humiliating 42-0 Anzac Day loss to the Melbourne Storm, shows their off-field attitude also lacks professional pride. Not only were they stood down for the team’s heartening 26-10 win against St George Illawarra, but Manu Vatuvei, Ben Matulino and Bodene Thompson were banned from Kiwis selection and Sam Lisone (Samoa), Konrad Hurrell and Albert Vete (Tonga) from contention for
Agnew’s Angle the Pacific tests. All, but designated driver Hurrell, admitted taking prescription drugs and energy drinks. Also missing from the Kiwis will be gutsy Parramatta star Kieran Foran who has reportedly headed to an overseas rehabilitation facility after being admitted to hospital in Sydney last week for an overdose of prescription medicine. While the Kiwis have sufficient depth to cover the absence of Vatuvei, Matulino and Thompson, they don’t have a backup at stand-off half of Foran’s class to contain the danger presented by the brilliant Jonathan Thurston. The prospect of second rower Tahu Harris marking the classy Thurston instead of Shaun Johnson or versatile Kodi Nikorima doesn’t inspire confidence in a NZ triumph even though Harris is a gutsy,
hard-working player. With Jesse Bromwich to lead them in the absence of the injured Simon Mannering, the Kiwis will seek to dominate through their forwards. Meanwhile Saturday night’s Super Rugby clash between the table topping Chiefs and defending champion Highlanders in Hamilton should be a cracker following the Chiefs 24-22 win against the Sharks and the Highlanders 23-10 victory against the Brumbies. It was the gritty showing of forwards Michael Leitch and Brodie Retallick that set the foundation for the Chiefs hard-fought win against the defensively strong Sharks rather than the mercurial brilliance of backs Aaron Cruden and Damian McKenzie. That they could still win despite the non-availability of 15 squad members that includes stars Charlie Ngatai and Jamie Lowe, speaks volumes for their team unity under the leadership of head coach Dave Rennie. With Lima Sopoaga scoring 18 points from a try, two conversions and three penalties, it was the Highlanders’ tena-
cious defence that got them home against a Brumbies side that won the rucks 138-35 and possession 73-27. Especially pleasing was the strong tackling, searing break and perfect pass for a Ben Smith try from centre Malakai Fekitoa. However the best-performed NZ team was the Hurricanes who crushed the Lions 50-17 at Ellis Park with a commanding performance that suggested centre Mike Proctor could join Ngatai, Fekitoa and Ryan Crotty as a contender for an All Blacks midfield berth. Although last in the NZ conference, the Blues deservedly beat the top placed Australian side, the Rebels, 36-30, scoring six tries, none better than fullback Lolagi Visinia’s solo effort in which he beat several defenders. They should back that up with a win against the Kings at Port Elizabeth on Sunday despite losing the gifted Ioane brothers back to Gordon Tietjens NZ sevens squad.
