Midnight Madness took hold in true block party style last Friday as thousands hit the streets in search of great bargains, food and entertainment, culminating in a unique atmosphere only Howick could pull off. Highlights included the switching on of the Christmas tree lights at Stockade Hill, the Christmas light display at Fencible Walk Park and Santa, street food, a bed giveaway, plenty of street entertainers and musicians to set the tone – and, of course, the chance to make a start on Christmas shopping. Treaty settlement concluded By Marianne Kelly
A
deed that settles the historical grievances of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki has been signed by the Crown. The deed of settlement was signed at the iwi’s Umupuia marae at Maraetai. It includes an acknowledgement and apology for the acts, omissions and historical breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi committed by the Crown, says the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Christopher Finlayson. Ngai Tai ki Tamaki is a member of
the Tamaki Collective and one of the 12 iwi of the Hauraki Collective. Their area of interest extends to Hauraki/Coromandel and, in particular the coastline, harbours and islands of the Tikapa Moana/Hauraki Gulf and Waitemata Harbour. Ngai Tai ki Tamaki suffered severe Treaty breaches that rendered them virtually landless by the late 19th century. In the decades following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the Crown acquired large tracts of land in the iwi’s rohe and confiscated 20639 hectares of land
from the East Wairoa area. “We can never fully compensate the people of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki for the wrongs they have endured,” Mr Finlayson says. This settlement, however, provides a basis for Ngai Tai ki Tamaki to develop a much stronger future and an opportunity for a genuine partnership with the Crown.” Cultural redress is focused on sites of immense cultural and historical significance to Ngai Tai ki Tamaki and includes the vesting of 16 Crown properties. It was a part of the weeklong celebration of Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights that symbolises the triumph of good over evil. Held at the Acorn Meadows Education and Childcare Centre at Cascades Road, it included children drawing diyas (oil lamps) a powerpoint storytelling session on the origin of Diwali, creating henna patterns and painting rangoli designs.

Live the high life with urban gems from Hi Mart F
uturistic household gadgets may be the norm in East Asian countries but New Zealand’s not too far behind now that a Korean specialist store has arrived in Botany South. Hi Mart, an importer of topselling Korean homeware and kitchenware in Bishop Dunn Place, Bishop’s Gate, has been wowing locals with high-tech household offerings since it opened a few months ago. A reputable name amongst the Korean community, Hi Mart was first established 16 years ago on the North Shore to help those settling in New Zealand replicate a lifestyle of comfort they’ve experienced abroad. Hi Mart managing director John Ko says Flat Bush is an excellent location for the new store. “It’s become a real melting pot of cultures and the demographic is one that is open to embracing a different, more efficient lifestyle.” And it’s not just Asians who are intrigued by the products Hi Mart offers, says John. “Globally, there’s been a rise in demand for Korean products. We’ve been to lots of expos including The Home Show in Auckland recently, and the response we received was overwhelming. “More and more people are looking at better quality products that are made from quality mate-
rials with the ability to multitask.” A commonplace theme in every Korean household is bathroom thrones/bidets with multiple mechanisms and functions creating a sense of luxury. Hi Mart stocks a wide variety of models to suit different budgets and lifestyles and friendly staff members offer guidance on the best option for customers. Boasting heated seats with sensors, temperature-regulated water, and drying, self-cleaning, soft close and water saving facilities, these incredible masterpieces of technology promise total comfort and hygiene. High quality and high performance, the bidet manufacturers are some of the most reputable providers of bidets in the world. Utterly affordable and easily installed, the bidets are sure to impress visitors and answer the demand for a more modern lifestyle. Then, imagine coming home and sinking into a chair that will work away all the stress and tension of the day. Hi Mart’s range of massage chairs is some of the most popular in Korea. Rewarding users with multiple health and mental benefits, these magnificent pieces of furniture make it easy for people to access instant relaxation right in their living room. When the relaxing is done, step
into the kitchen where Korean innovation has created numerous delectable dishes that have made its cuisine so renowned. Especially with the recent popularity of K-pop culture, this niche retailer is answering the demand for specially designed cookware helping people recreate Korean favourites. Rice cookers are a valuable commodity in most Asian households, and Hi Mart takes it a step further with its new-generation line of appliances. “We sell high pressure cookers which enable cooks to create perfect, fluffy rice that has just the right balance of sticky and soft that people love so much,” says John. “And thanks to cutting-edge technology, the rice cookers can cook virtually anything, including stews and casseroles saving precious time in this busy day and age.” The cookware department continues to stand out with the double-sided pan innovation a real hit. Made by one of Korea’s leading specialists Happycall, the pan, which looks like a sandwich press with a handle, allows people to flip fried eggs and other food items with ease, minimising smoke and spillage. Then there are the one-pot wonders that Happycall is renowned for. Designed for Asian foods
which tend to be saucier, the coating is superior to most nonstick surfaces on the market. “The hardy surface is non-stick and non-scratch,” says John. “Thanks to its intelligent design the pressure is maintained in a vacuum-like environment, retaining moisture and nutritional value of foods cooked.” Another essential part of Korean food are specialised kimchi fridges which can also double up as a second freezer in large Kiwi households. “There’s a reason Koreans love kimchi fridges. They keep food fresh for much longer than generic fridges and a scientific cooling system.” As a result, no more throwing out vegetables and essentially, saving money, says John. Interest-free payment options are available for the fridges, up to 12 months, and Hi Mart offers FREE installation. All appliances have been modified to suit New Zealand sockets and certifications have been carried out by registered technicians and are approved by manufacturers. “We offer a comprehensive warranty for products sold, and if it’s faulty, we’ll fix it,” he says. “We’re big on customer service experience here at Hi Mart. Making sure our customers know which product is best for them, how best to use our products as well as after-care service are our

End of charity era
The signs are all there By Farida Master There is a distinct stink of milk bottles as the environmental warriors at Macleans College are busy trying to create a kayak out of recycled plastic bottles. The enviro group is planning to participate in a ‘Plastic bottle Kayak’ competition to be hosted by Forest and Bird at Eastern Beach. It’s after school hours and yet everyone is fired with enthusiasm trying to work on the design element involved in making a floatable raft or a kayak from recycled bottles. The dedicated enviro group headed by teacher Susan van der Spuy is constantly working on new projects and ideas that make the communities we live in more clean and environmentally friendly. Recently, new educational signages in two areas near the school stream have been installed. The cheerful and informative signage has come out of their hard earned money. “The students used the prize money of $1000 they won in the March Monitoring month competition

organised by Wai Care where schools tested the water in their local streams,” says Ms Spuy. “Since each sign costs $800 they topped it up with fund-raising.” The signage informs the public about the ecology and importance of the small waterways to urban life and local ecosystems. Year 11 student Libby Christopher who has just returned from San Francisco where she was honoured with the Action for Nature International Young Eco Hero Award for protecting the Maui’s dolphin says: “The main problem with the stream is working with plastic pollution and invasive weeds.” The 15 year-old who has been with the enviro group for the last three years says that the students have been
testing the pH levels, water quality and the kind of aquatic life, the red algae that lives in the stream. “After testing it we have found that it is not as bad as we thought but it still needs a lot of work in terms of prevention and healing the stream. We need to keep working on it.” Fortunately all the hard work has paid off. As we go to press the Macleans College Enviro Group has been awarded the ‘Ros Nicholson Award for Native Ecology 2015’ by the Howick Local Board and Local and Sports Parks South. The award is in recognition of the high level of commitment to the ongoing restoration, protection and enhancement of both the stream and terrestrial ecosystem.
iligent supporters of a worldwide children’s charity are bracing themselves for individual lifestyle changes when the Save the Children shop in Howick is closed as part of a national shut-down. Last September the Howick Save the Children branch committee of seven and its 33 volunteers received a letter from the charity’s national president telling them that all the shops throughout the country would close, except Kaiapoi in Canterbury. The reason given was that the amount of revenue all the shops were producing didn’t justify the time the national office paid staff was putting into the shops’ administration. “It is very sad,” the Howick committee’s president, Val Osborne says. “It will leave a big gap in our lives. I’m not sure if they realise the shops are the face of Save the Children in New Zealand. It’s going to be hard to keep a presence.” Before the shop in the Picton Street Plunket building closes on December 23 the Howick group will celebrate close to 40 years of service to the cause. At that stage Mrs Osborne says the volunteers will ascertain if there is support

for continuing fund-raising, such as a regular quiz evening, cake stalls and the odd morning tea. In the late 70s the shop operated in the then brand new Howickville shopping mall building (now The Terraces). It was a gypsy-like existence as they moved from shop to shop when they became vacant until new tenants moved in. In 1980 the group opened a shop in a small room beneath the Howick Library, which then operated in Fencible Drive, and remained there until a new library was built in Uxbridge Road in 1997. Trading started in new
shop premises in the Picton Street Plunket building on June 9, 1997 and the then Mayor of Manukau City, Sir Barry Curtis officially opened it the following day. Cynthia Crick remembers the days at the Howickville complex and remains an active member, as is Ellen Thom who was president for 14 years from 1984 until 2004 when Mrs Osborne took over the role. “We would like to publicly thank our customers, most who regularly come in to browse,” Mrs Thom says. ■■ All shop stock will be sold at half marked price from November 30.

t’s becoming known as the ‘Hilton’ of Chapel Road and Howick Ward’s newest retirement village is well into the swing. A capacity crowd filled the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village’s bar/restaurant complex to listen to one of New Zealand’s most venerable military bands on a recent Sunday afternoon.
The Band of the Royal Regiment of the NZ Artillery was the guest, providing an entertaining repertoire of popular and military items. With 150 years of unbroken service in war and peace, the band is New Zealand’s oldest with a continuous playing history. With about 400 people already in residence, the retirement village is on the home run with construction of the last stage of units expected
to be complete in the middle of next month. The complex includes twobedroom independent and one- bedroom serviced apartments and a rest home, hospital and dementia unit on three floors. Ancillary facilities include the bar/restaurant, library, snooker room, gym and heated swimming pool, private cinema and a wellequipped ‘man cave’ for the DIY specialists.
Artist finds balance with own work By Marianne Kelly After close to 10 years of concentrating on teaching students and selling art works in the USA, artist Tony Clarke is staging an exhibition of his works at his Pakuranga studio. Until the New Zealand dollar crept to its latest dizzy heights against the US dollar, Mr Clarke exhibited at one of the many galleries established in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. When he started he was resident artist at the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre. “More recently my teaching has taken over,” Mr Clarke says. He currently has 70 students. “But now I have got the balance between teaching

and painting right and have turned my attention back to my own painting.” Consequently he is planning his biggest local exhibition in 10 years. The eight paintings are those he has chosen from workshop demonstrations given to his students over time. While painting for the
US market he concentrated on an important niche for wildlife portraits. One of the more traditional portrait style works in his exhibition is the head of a bobcat, “a very popular style in the States”, he says. But he’s extended the USA wildlife theme into a style he calls cross-over realism and abstract. A painting of three wolves in different poses and environments reflects visits to animal parks and observation of spectacular rock formations. ■■ Tony Clarke’s exhibition will be held at 10am-4pm on November 23-December 4 at the Tony Clarke Fine Arts School, 9 Ben Lomond Crescent, Pakuranga, phone 577-4004 for more information.

Midnight antics L
ocal police patrolling Midnight Madness in Howick last Friday were conveniently on hand to sort out a group of rowdy teens. Sergeant Brett Meale of Howick police says a group of teens were involved in a “push and shove” at about 11am on Picton Street. “We separated them and sent them on their way,” Mr Meale says. Apart from that minor incident, there was a small scrub fire lit that night, he says. “It was a good night.” Police have the following advice for the upcoming party
season: ■■ Avoid advertising parties on social media ■■ Supply alcohol responsibly; parents and guardians of minors must provide express consent and low and non-alcoholic drinks and food should be available. Supplying alcohol to a minor (under 18) is an offence and can result in a fine of up to $2000. ■■ Reduce the risk of unwanted guests by: l Limiting the number of guests at a party to a manageable size l Organising transport for
guests to arrive and get home l Notifying neighbours about the party’s start and end times ■■ Should trouble occur, contact your local police immediately, or in an emergency call 111. ■■ People can email partypackscm@police.govt.nz for party safety tips and crime prevention advice. Include your name, address, contact details and the time and size of your party. Party packs can also be obtained at Howick and Ormiston police stations.
Henk gets the last laugh A man who has fought, at considerable financial and health costs, to have a tree on his neighbour’s property cut down, is getting the last laugh as recent high winds brought down a substantial branch. Henk Van der Vliet spent more than 10 years fighting to have the large gum tree next to his property removed because the roots were clogging up his sewer drains and the tree constantly shed branches over his house. He spent more than $20,000 repairing damage to his drains, roof, ceiling

and carpet over the years, says Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart who helped Mr Van der Vliet negotiate frustrating bureaucracy and legal channels. “The tree had the last laugh, but Henk will have the
last say which will be ‘I told you so’,” she says. Luckily the huge branch didn’t fall on anyone or damage private property. Mr Van der Vliet has since moved to live with family in the South Island.

BUSINESS
10 — Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, November 19, 2015 ADVERTORIAL JH10592A
Moving on to another New World As part of the business profile series in the Times, we speak to a local supermarket operator embarking on a new journey.
Hungry for Aviemore A
W
hen Penny Ashton takes stock in her supermarket this Sunday it will be for the last time. The owner-operator of New World Botany will be leaving the area and heading up north to open up a New World in Whangaparaoa, which launches on December 8. She says the past five years have been a great journey. “I have a fantastic team of people behind of me and to have served such a great community has been a privilege.” Although the Farm Cove resident is sad to leave, she knows there are new beginnings ahead. After five years at New World Botany and three years at New World Panmure, Penny has forged strong bonds in this part of Auckland. However, her background with the Foodstuffs supermarket collective and the hospitality industry has spanned a quarter of a century. In 1984, Penny started a Huntly cafe with some friends called Penny’s Place, which, today, is still the trade moniker she goes by. She later sold the cafe, got married, and began working
too – walls are adorned with beautiful artwork, bright pops of colour look inviting and Edison light bulbs add another dimension to the contemporary space. Cabinet food is attractively displayed – pies, quiches, filo parcels and sandwiches are all lovingly handmade on-site. All dressings are homemade as well; patrons will definitely find no fake additives or flavourings on the premises. The made-from-scratch philosophy continues to the bakery department too. Glorious slices of cheesecakes with rich, fruity flavours are a specialty at Aviemore Cafe. Family-friendly, the cafe offers nibbles for the littlies including mini club sandwiches, chicken nuggets, mini pizzas, mini bagels and pasta. Gluten-free options are also available. A hidden gem with much to offer, this new hotspot is sure to curry favour with locals’ tastebuds. Pop in today, take advantage of the special below or check out Aviemore Cafe on Facebook!
bright little cafe is attracting patrons by the dozen with the lure of fresh food and coffee. Located in a cheerful spot which once housed a roast shop, Aviemore Cafe in Highland Park is serving up in-house baked treats as well as a comprehensive breakfast, brunch and lunch menu. From traditional brekkie fare such as eggs benny, and brioche French toast to more hearty lunch options such as grilled salmon, roast chicken, lamb burger and steak sandwich, the menu brims with choices. Incredibly affordable, meals are generous, fresh and made from scratch. Experienced chef and owner Tony plates up his creations with a whole lot of heart. An AUT-trained culinary graduate, the passionate entrepreneur has risen through the ranks at well-known and hotels such as The Langham and Rendezvous. With 16 years under his chef’s hat, Tony’s mission is to create simple, fresh, nutritious and delicious food that is elegantly presented. “I’ve always dreamt of opening my own establishment,” he says. “I’ve explored fusion and continental styles and love being creative in the kitchen.” And the cosy decor is inventive

as a branch manager for Coca Cola in Hamilton. “Then someone said to us, ‘why are you working so hard for these companies when you could be doing something for yourself?” Together with former husband, John, Penny owned and ran the Morrinsville, Matamata and Devonport New Worlds before setting out on her own in Panmure. She says she has accomplished great things with people a highlight of her time in Botany. “It gives me great satisfaction to invest in people, help them reach their potential and retain them in the Foodstuffs family.” Of course, it helps that Penny loves what she does. “I’ve always said ‘the day I don’t want to come to work is the day I hang up my boots’.”

The hands-on boss says she’s filled with pride when she surveys the store “seeing my shop looking neat, bright, full and clean”. A tireless supporter of the community, Penny ensures New World Botany contributes to local causes from Howick Pakuranga Netball Club, Women’s Refuge and Salvation Army to local schools and colleges, Botany Secondary College Golf Day, the Pakuranga Golf Club Hospice fundraiser and more. This hardy community spirit has, in turn, served the store well, says Penny. “Last year’s leaky building repairs was a bit of a testing time but we managed to get through with very little impact on our turnover.” Through it all, Penny has always backed the Times. “We have a magnificent relationship with the Times. Kelly [our account manager] has always been good to us and represented the paper well. “Advertising is a great thing and it helps get our message across.” While Penny will be sad to leave, her message is: “At the end of every journey is a new beginning.”

RSA into a new era
RSA gifted new set of wheels
By Marianne Kelly
A
change of the guard at Howick RSA is gearing up to take the organisation further into the 21st century. Howick Local Board vice chair and local marriage celebrant Adele White has been appointed as patron, replacing the late World War II El Alamein veteran Watty McEwan, who died last May, aged 96. President of three years, Mike Cole, under RSA rules, has stepped down, and vice president for the past three years, Ray Sangster, has moved up to the role. Mr Cole says Ms White’s appointment as patron ticked all the boxes. “I looked up to see what was required of a patron and thought about what the modern RSA needed,” he says. “I had known Adele for a long time, of her former police service and the fact that she had served overseas in the Solomon Islands. “The purpose of a patron is to help the organisation get noticed, lend credibility and a politician can open doors. So it ticked all the boxes.” Ms White’s late father, Basil Findlay, who died in 2001, served in the Air Force in World War II and was an active member of Howick RSA throughout his life. Given her Dad’s involvement, Ms White says “it felt right”. “At times like this I wish he was around. He would have been immensely proud,” she says. “While the patron is more of a figurehead role, if the occasion arises I will be more than willing to contribute and to bring a female perspective.” Mr Sangster is the first associate member to become president of the Howick RSA. “I became involved when a mate of mine was in the Territorial Force, and he insisted I come in for a beer. The next thing I was involved in the fishing section.” The rest was history. “I think having Adele on board is very in keeping with where the club wants to head. We want to become more focused on younger family people, and for them to feel it’s a place they can come to.” Mr Sangster is also chairman of the club’s refurbishment committee, which has been looking at further development of the RSA building in Wellington Street. With an upgrade complete in the upstairs main area, eyes have shifted to the downstairs basement. It’s seen as another revenue stream, Mr Sangster says, for example to be used for functions such as 21st birthdays, conferences, even small weddings. “My other focus is to see how the Poppy Trust is working for the veterans,” he says. “We know that there are returned servicemen in our catchment area but we have no record of them. We see them on Anzac Day and then they disappear.” According to RSA rules, all ex-service personnel, spouses and partners, dependents and widows/widowers of ex-service personnel in need are eligible to apply to the RSA for welfare funds. They don’t have to be members of the RSA and they can be any nationality, for example British, US or South African.

Some of New Zealand’s leading young musicians will perform in Howick’s Thursdays @ Seven Spring Series today. The musicians hail from the Pettman National Junior Academy that offers the chance for exceptional young musicians to develop their skills and challenge themselves nationally and internationally. Coached by inspirational cello teacher Edith Salzmann, they will present music by Villa-Lobos, Bach and Piazzolla. The Thursdays @ Seven concert is at 7-8pm on November 19 at All Saints Anglican Church, Selwyn Road, Howick. Admission is by donation. For more information phone 534-6864.
NEW RIDE: Buy Right Cars general manager Qiuchee Wong handed over the keys of a new Toyota Vellfire to Howick RSA president Ray Sangster recently, outside the Howick RSA in Wellington Street, Howick. It was a timely gift as the old welfare coach had come to the end of its life. It will be used to ferry members to and from hospital and as a courtesy vehicle for locals at the weekend.

Put stop to plate theft
PAKURANGA TOWN CENTRE
Community Open Day
SHARE IN OUR FUTURE.
A
fter a 15-minute shop at Kmart in Botany, a man came back and found someone tampering with his vehicle registration plate in broad daylight. His story is one of many that Community Patrols of New Zealand (CPNZ) local representative Graeme Walmsley hears speaking to people who replace their licence plate screws as part of the Safer Plates initiative. “Most of the people who come to us have either experienced [number plate theft] or have friends and family who have,” he says. Mr Walmsley, who was involved in the initial launch, backed by Howick and Pakuranga Crimewatch Community Patrol (now Howick and Pakuranga Community Patrol) and Howick police in 2013, says it’s been a huge success. “We’ve changed 3600 plates across the district, 2400 of which are in the Howick-Pakuranga area.” In fact, the programme has spread beyond East Auckland. “It’s been so successful that CPNZ have provided a budget to

assist patrols to roll it out nationally,” Mr Walmsley says. In recent months, vehicle plate theft across Counties Manukau has seen a slight increase, according to police. Stolen plates are commonly used to commit petrol theft although they may also feature in other crimes. The Safer Plates programme replaces conventional screws with uniquely grooved screws that can only be removed and installed using a special set of tools. People can replace their screws at a cost of $4 per car, with all proceeds going to CPNZ patrols.

hanghai as a city is the living, breathing cliché of “East meets West”. Fourhundred-year-old Chinese tea houses live in the shadows of some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. The road and walkway along the east bank of the Huangpu River is known as “The Bund” and is like stepping back in time to the late 19th and early 20th Century when Europeans came to China to trade. They built huge embassies, hotels and trading houses in the European architecture of the time. I could for a moment believe I was on the banks of the Thames, the Rhine or the Seine. Across the river is the new financial district of Shanghai, a showcase to the world of the highest, the brightest, most daring and expensively designed buildings in the world. Joining the two sides of Shanghai together is a tourist train ride that goes under the river and regales its passengers with a laser light, music and balloon man show, telling the story of Shanghai. I didn’t understand much of its symbolism but I would recommend it for uniqueness! We left Shanghai on a 12-hour sleeper train bound for Xian, some 1400km inland. On the platform ultra modern 380km/h Germandesigned bullet trains wait alongside old locomotives that have been connecting Chinese cities and towns for half a century. My train is something in between with comfortable four berth beds and our national escort provided us with a packed lunch for the journey. Xian is very old; one of China’s original capital cities, it dates back over 3000 years. I took a bike ride around the 12km city wall that was

reconstructed in 1370 and it is still fully intact. There is an amazing Bell Tower that stands in the middle of the busiest intersection, modern vehicles made to divert around this ancient monument. The remarkable engineering feat of the brick Great Wild Goose Pagoda still stands 64 metres high since it was built in 652AD without the aid of cement. The city has been home to many Chinese emperors, including the first Emperor Shi Huang who commissioned the construction of his mausoleum in 246BC. To protect him in the afterlife, a terracotta army was built to guard his tomb. Over the years that followed subsequent emperors all wanted their dynasties to be remem-
bered as the greatest and thus buried or destroyed much of the previous ones. In 1974 five farmers digging a well unearthed a terracotta warrior. In the past when such a discovery was made superstition would take hold and the find would just be covered over. However, these farmers kept digging and so far around two thousand warriors have been uncovered from what is thought to be an army of more than six thousand. The pits that are being excavated by archeologists are enclosed in a huge aircraft hangar-like structure. The main pit holding the 2000-strong Terracotta Army is an amazing sight. Life-size generals, warriors, archers, horsemen, char-
iots and cavalry horses stand in battle formation, each one unique. Musicians, acrobats and funeral processions have also been found in the pits. Some pieces have been found intact but most required the arduous task of being reconstructed, piece by piece. A reminder of how recent this discovery was is the daily book signings by one of the original farmers. Luckily all the farmers had the same surname and have mastered the same signature. All the signed books are genuine but get there soon as the farmers are now all in their eighties! The visit to the Terracotta Army will remain with me forever and certainly surpassed my expectations.

Ingredients:
• 200g Pams prunes • 330ml beer, stout or cold tea • 150g Pams mixed peel • 400g Cinderella sultanas • 400g Pams currants • 250g Pams butter • 250g Chelsea brown sugar • 2tsps Hansells vanilla essence • 6 eggs • 300g plain flour • 3 tsps mixed spice • 70g chopped walnuts • 100g dark chocolate bits • 1 pomegranate Also need: baking paper
Method:
Heat oven to 160ºC (not fan bake).
Blitz or chop the prunes and mix with the cold tea or beer. Put into a large bowl with the dried fruit. Leave to soak. Double-line two cake tins – 23cm round or 20cm square - with enough baking paper to come a couple of centimetres above the top of the tin. Lightly oil the tins first so the paper sticks closely to the sides. Beat the butter, sugar and vanilla until creamy and then add in the eggs one by one. Mix in the flour, mixed spice, nuts, chocolate, soaked fruit and liquid. From the bowl pour into the cake tins. Bake for 2-3 hours. Feedback Gone to foreign investors
What Jami-Lee Ross left out of all these amazing deeds his government has achieved is to pay off their massive accumulated debt. They have allowed prime pieces of New Zealand’s most productive land to be sold to foreign investors. Not to mention their betrayal of the next generation of genuine NZ first-homebuyers wanting to live in Auckland, where they will find the most choice pieces of real estate in the hands of foreign investors or wealthy new immigrants who have them as holiday homes or renters or are simply empty for the super rich to shifting failing foreign currencies into lucrative land-banking ventures. Gary Hollis Howick
Good SATs needed
Gary Hollis’ young friend seems to have been misinformed (Times, October 22). The acceptance process into USA universities is particularly odd and is out of line with pretty much every other country. They require all candidates, their own and those from overseas to sit SATs (I think meaning Standard Achievement Test). They simply don’t rely solely on any assessment system. To get into the Ivy League or

other prestigious universities in the USA, you need good grades from here – but there is no hope without good Standard Achievement Tests, good essays and good recommendations. There is no scope in the USA for preferring Cambridge over NCEA, or over the other system used here, International Baccalaureate. The same situation applies to varied systems from any other countries. Students assessed by the NCEA system have definitely gained entry to the University of Pennsylvania, which does indeed sit up there in the highest echelons of USA tertiary education. No New Zealand student need feel disadvantaged by sitting NCEA, though gaining entry to top level universities (in the USA and elsewhere) is indeed a complicated business. Judy Lawry Golflands
A pricey loo
Two million dollars for the tiny toilet block at Eastern Beach? You have to be kidding. And to add insult to injury, a property developer’s signage all over it. The profit from this venture alone could have paid for it many times over (hopefully they have). Gary Hollis Howick

‘We fear Howick’s future’
Howick people must unite! In the latest move, the Council in its evidence on the Independent Hearings Panel website has stripped Howick of its overlay protecting the seaward side of the Village from intensive development (the Heritage 7 zone under Manukau), has deleted demolition protection for most pre-1944 buildings in the area and has removed any special Historic status for Howick Village, suggesting it become “a precinct”. This flies completely in the face of the victory (albeit temporary) secured for Howick Village by Howick Residents and Ratepayers Assn when Justice Kirkpatrick’s IHP interim guidance
ruled that Howick Village should remain a Special Character area. It appears that all protection from rampant inappropriate development for our communities is being removed. No attention is being given to our residential/community character and minimal protection is being given to built and natural heritage. Worse still, plans are afoot to remove all single housing zoning in Auckland, thus placing the onus on residents to prove that our single housing area – already a fraction in size of the area of single housing originally designated under the Draft Unitary Plan – meets the newly restrictive criteria which could see the
status of the Howick/Cockle Bay lose all protection and be upgraded to Mixed Housing Suburban zone. To be zoned Single House Zone, the area must have “identified natural and built heritage values”. The only other criteria is that the area is subject to flooding or instability or is unable to be adequately serviced. If our area does not meet these criteria there will be no single housing area, and the seaward side of Howick could be opened up to intensive development (sections of as low as 200 square metres, terrace housing and so on). We find it very difficult to understand how our representatives can believe this is what we want when we and many others have been very clear over a number of years on what we, as a community, expect. We need to ensure that the degree to which this proposal to destroy our way of life and our communities is unacceptable to us, is understood at all levels. Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association and Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association are fighting this with all their might, but unless all the people in Howick rise up now and contact their local representatives, we fear for the future. Gayleen Mackereth Chairperson, Howick Residents and Ratepayers Assn

High temperatures and busy holiday routes of summer put extra demands on both car and driver, says the New Zealand Automobile Association (AA). ■ The most important thing for summer road trips is to get your vehicle fully serviced. There are plenty of top quality motoring experts advertised on these pages that will be only too happy to carry out the work you require. ■ Wet keys: It’s easy to lose car keys in beach sand or take the remote control for a swim and then find that car doors won’t open. Salt in seawater can ruin electric circuits and render transponder keys useless. ■ Tyre punctures: High temperatures aggravate existing rubber damage. Under-inflation adds to the problem causing friction and more heat, which can cause punctures and blowouts. Check tyre condition and pressures, adjusting for extra load. Check caravan tyres for cracking and renew damaged tyres before use. ■ Overheating: High temperatures can aggravate cooling system problems. Low coolant level, leaking hoses and broken electric cooling fans can all result in overheating and expensive damage. If the fan’s broken, it will soon become apparent when you meet slow moving traffic and the engine temperature soars. Check the

coolant reservoir level regularly, and look out for wet or white staining on coolant hoses. ■ Summer fuel saving: If you have to carry luggage on the roof, use a roof box to reduce drag. Alternatively, load luggage on a roof rack as low as possible and wrap tightly in plastic sheeting. If you’re staying in one place for your holiday, take off the roof rack or box when you get there. You’ll save fuel on day trips. Open windows cause extra drag. Try air vents first, particularly on motorways. Once air conditioning has cooled the inside of the car, you can turn it down or off. Don’t start it if doors or windows are open. Increase tyre pressure if carrying extra passengers or heavy luggage. Using a windscreen shade and opening up the car will help to cool the inside. Opening windows while you drive out of a car park will lower the inside temperature before you start the air conditioning. ■ Fatigue: Fresh air, exercise or turning up the radio may help for a short time but are not as effective as breaking a journey over three hours with a 20-minute break; on longer journeys, take a break every two hours. Remember, it’s illegal to stop on the motorway hard shoulder, except in an emergency.

One in four Kiwi men happy and healthy Only one in four Kiwi guys claim they’re the happiest and healthiest they’ve ever been, according to new research released this month by the Movember Foundation. And the ‘grass is greener’ mentality seems to be in full force with 51 per cent of our boys believing they’ll be happier and healthier in the future. The Movember Man Files, an inaugural study in New Zealand by the Movember Foundation, takes a closer look behind the Mo to uncover attitudes and insights into men’s health across the nation – revealing what makes them tick when it comes to their health and what they do (or don’t do) when they get ‘sick’. Robert Dunne, New Zealand country manager, Movember, says the findings show. Men need to embrace and prioritise their health sooner rather than later. “Our guys aren’t living in the now and their attitudes towards their current and future health and happiness reflects this. “Maybe they’re waiting for New Year’s resolutions to start their health kick and set some change in motion, but there’s no time like the present to start addressing men’s health now by taking part in Movember,” he says.
The research shows that only 10 per cent of Kiwi men would take immediate action for a mental health problem, versus 22 per cent for physical health, and they’re not always talking to real people. The all-knowing Dr Google sits just 1 per cent behind health professionals when looking at who they turn to first for help on mental health issues. And our staunch Kiwi males are not reaching out to other men for help with only 4 per cent opening up to their mates about feeling low or depressed, preferring to talk about politics, money and their careers. While men may still view talking about mental health as somewhat taboo, they approach physical health far more willingly, being 16 per cent more likely to seek help from their GP for physical health issues than mental health issues. “Movember is all about encouraging our Kiwi lads to grow a Mo to spark a conversation and get them talking about their health. We all know that beards have enjoyed a bit of a comeback recently, with 13 per cent of Kiwi men now donning a chin covering, but moustaches are rarer facial adornments, having homes on just 5 per cent of our men,” said Dunne.
It’s a hair-raising business The Seaside Meats men have let the fuzz flourish on their top lip for many years in support of men’s health awareness month, Movember. The biggest challenge is paying attention during very early morning grooming time and remembering to stop that razor from habitually gliding over the mo domain. Herb has had particular difficulty breaking the habit this year but he is on track now. Nardo’s stache is thriving, while Malcolm is going for the full facial paleo man look.

stunning house in Clevedon has won the outdoor living category of the National House of the Year Master Builders Awards announced last weekend. Described as a harmonious marriage between old and new, the Faulkner Construction house is comprised of two new pavilions bordering an existing H-shaped house. It’s sited on a levelled hill top surrounded by lawn and driveway. The palatial residence is part of a large estate. The design has two functions. A recreational element includes a swimming pool, pool pavilion and tennis court, while a utilitarian wing houses a garage, store rooms and office. The outdoor living area is set against the backdrop of the Clevedon Scenic Reserve. It features a 12 metre swimming pool, spa pool, pool pavilion and tennis court. The project is described as a true work of art, respecting tranquillity, privacy and being totally at one with nature.
Construction pace quickening The longest and strongest sustained growth in residential construction in Auckland’s history is underway, according to Building and Housing Minister, Dr Nick Smith. The pace of residential construction, he says, is at a 10-year high and is continuing to grow. “We are making solid progress in lifting the pace of residential construction in
Auckland, with the latest annual building consents at the highest level in 10 years, at 8721,” he says. “This compares with the low of 3485 after the Global Financial Crisis and amounts to compound growth of 27 per cent, 28 per cent, 31 per cent and 18 per cent in Auckland’s house build rate over the past four years.” The number of
people employed in the construction industry has increased from 48,000 to 75,000 over the past four years, Dr Smith says, and GDP data is also strong. He rejects a claim that only 102 homes have been completed out of the Government and Auckland Council Housing Accord 39,000 target, saying that it is incomplete, misleading and selective.

Let the best do the rest Summer’s nearly here and if the home to-do list shows no sign of shrinking it’s time to call in the experts who have all grounds covered. drop in the number of residential property sales in the Super City is reflected in the south-east with Eastern Beaches dwelling numbers sold down 22 per cent in October to 157 from 200 the same time the year before, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. REINZ chief executive, Colleen Milne says the drop in the number of sales in Auckland in October is the result of a softening of demand over the past few months and the new IRD and bank account rules introduced at the start of October. “However the market has run harder than usual through the winter, thus a settling period is not unexpected. “The fundamental supply and demand drivers of the Auckland market remain in place,” she says. “The result for October is indicative of the market adjustment phase as it adapts to these new requirements.” QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush says Auckland values continue to rise, fuelled by high net migration and record low interest rates, with some areas up by more than 30 per cent over the past year. The average value in the region is now more than $900,000, she says.
NEW POLICIES: The wind seems to have been taken out of housing sales. Times file photo
“While anecdotal evidence suggests that the market may have cooled somewhat in anticipation of regulatory measures being introduced by the Government and the Reserve Bank, there is still no sign that this is having any impact on rising values in the Super City region.” Home values across the Auckland region, she says, continued to show “massive value increases over the past year”. Manukau values rose 9.5 per cent over the past three months alone and a “massive” 27.5 per cent year-on-year
with the average value now $783,791. However, QV homevalue operations manager northern, Jan O’Donoghue says activity appears to have eased a little which could be due to uncertainty caused by the introduction of new changes aimed at curbing investors in the Auckland market. “The new policies seem to have taken the wind out of the sales of the Auckland housing market over recent weeks,” she says. “However values are still rising so it may take some time before we know if these moves

• The first stapler machine was invented during the 1700s for King Louis XV of France. Each of the staples used was handcrafted and inscribed with the royal court’s insignia. • Before the name stapler, the device was called ‘Hotchkiss‘ after the American company that had created them. • The most advanced stapler is the circumferential stapler that is used by surgeons to bind bowels sections together. • Stapleless staplers have been in existence since 1910. These don’t use metal fasteners, but rather punches a small flap of paper and weaves it secure. • In the beginning the stapler was such an unknown feature in the office that companies would buy only one, and often 500 people had to share just one stapler. The first office staplers were not easy to use because they had loose or paper-wrapped staples.

Storybook kitchen comes to life There’s always enough food to go round the table at the Fouhy household but space was a different story.
With an ever-growing household, a bustling family kitchen in Mt Albert was bursting at the seams. Jag Kitchens stepped in to help creating a beautiful space for many new memories.
“We needed our kitchen to stretch!” says Dianna Fouhy.
“She’s been absolutely patient. She listened, gave me ideas, showed me options I’d never have thought of and helped me research. She’s just been a joy to work with.”
“It’s always been a happy kitchen but it could be a bit tight,” says Dianna.
Then, Dianna’s husband, Kieran, thought about removing the adjacent laundry. “Just one day this time last year he said ‘what if we took it out?’” says Dianna. Putting their plan into action, the Fouhys considered someone who would enhance the well-loved kitchen yet maintain the character of their 1920s home. Jag Kitchens in Botany Town Centre’s Danske Mobler Home Centre was the family’s choice. “Our daughter’s boss recently had a Jag kitchen put in, and

they were really pleased with it,” says Dianna.
fine china, some inherited from Dianna’s mother.
Meeting Jag Kitchens designer Liz Martin, Dianna devised a design with input from the whole family.
The warm, welcoming space is bathed with natural light streaming in from white French windows contrasting with deep, royal blue walls reminiscent of Dianna’s parents’ house.
Liz says it was about letting the artistic household express its personality. “I love that there’s art everywhere and just helped Dianna piece together all the elements.” Although modern appliances and functions feature, the heart of the home has not lost its quaint, quirky charm. Modelled after the tongue and groove detailing of the former laundry, it boasts an elegant rimu island, generous drawers, as well as a 1.5 wall oven.

The inspiring athlete from Howick has bounced back from injury to take first place in the Masters II category at the Auckland Power lifting Novice competition. It was in 2012 that Ms Jeffery, in her mid-50s, started her journey to fitness, losing and dropping two dress sizes. After learning about the importance of weight lifting, she began to lift weights at home and was quickly addicted. However it wasn’t until her daughter convinced her to join CrossFit in 2013 that the real love affair with power lifting began. Ms Jeffery entered her first novice competition in mid2014 at age 58 and another

competition in October of that year. With her eye on the Nationals in 2015, Ms Jeffery was not expecting to hit a wall when a past injury resurfaced. “I saw a specialist and was told I should have an operation. I was so disappointed,” she said. After the operation in February 2015, Ms Jeffery was una-
ble to start back at CrossFit for six weeks and even then was limited in what she could do. “It was frustrating but I had so much support from all the coaches and my workout buddies that I soon got back into it and accepted my restrictions,” she said. After recovering from surgery, Ms Jeffery has now achieved a new personal best with her bench press (54kg) and deadlift (110kg) and has her sights set on breaking an Auckland record next year. Ms Jeffery’s trainer Carli describes Ms Jeffery as an “incredible 59-year-old athlete”. “People literally see her training and competing and are motivated to do something themselves, she truly is an inspiration,” Carli says. Ms Jeffery is not stopping there, aiming to compete at the 2016 nationals at 60 years old.

Run, run as fast as you can By Rumer-Grace Archer Bucklands Beach Intermediate runners astounded their parents and teachers running a combined total of 300km at the Taranaki Steelformers Around the Mountain relay over the weekend. Not only did they win the school challenge event for the second year running but
the Hypersonics placed sixth out of the 54 teams including adults and business groups. The Hypersonics team were so fast they broke the school record by 63 minutes with a time of 11h45m. Year 8 student Amy Edwards-Maas from the Supersonics, who ran her longest distance of 11.7km in under an hour, said although it was tiring, it was exciting.
“The atmosphere was really cool and everyone was supporting each other and it was just a really nice environment,” she said. Deputy principal Mark Stevenson said the weekend exceeded expectations. Bucklands Beach Intermediate was one of three Auckland teams in the event completing 150km with 21 legs 5-11km long.

Suburbs go back-to-back By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER Suburbs made history at the biggest instalment of Auckland Club Sevens on Saturday winning the Men’s Sevens title for the second time with a thrilling victory over host Pakuranga. College Rifles followed suit winning back to back in the Women’s division while Papatoetoe took out the Under 20s title in the huge day of competition with a total of 77 matches across four grades. Returning to Pakuranga for the second time since 2010, the tournament included the Women’s and Under 20 grades for the second year and introduced the Under 85kg grade for the first time. “In 2014 we introduced the Women’s and Under 20 grades to make it a more inclusive event,” said club rugby manager Lewis McClintock. “We’ve extended that with bringing in the Under 85kg grade, hopefully the competition will continue to grow and we can create a festival of sevens, showcasing a range of clubs and grades.” The competition was used to identify potential representative players for both the Auckland Men’s and Women’s teams.

Taylor at assertive best
Agnew’s Angle
I
n scoring a record 290 test runs at Perth for any visiting batsman to Australia, Ross Taylor showed he is much better when he plays assertive cricket instead of being conservative. That is something which his ailing mentor, Martin Crowe, would have applauded as Taylor and the incredibly gifted Kane Williamson, 166, led New Zealand to a first innings to overcome Australia’s 559. At 31, six years older than Williamson, Taylor showed he is far from a dead duck and still has plenty to offer. Using eye drops to rectify a problem faced in the lost first test in Brisbane, Taylor returned to his commanding best, timing shots sweetly and executing them with power. His 290 is the third highest score by a Black Caps batsman behind Brendon McCullum’s 302 and Crowe’s 299, both at Wellington’s Basin Reserve. Taylor also ranks second in averages (46.65) among Black Caps who have played 20 or more tests behind Williamson’s 48.82 and ahead of Crowe’s 45.36. Interestingly, upon making his debut at Eden Park in 1973 with a century, Rodney Red-

mond had an average of 81.5 but only played the one test. With Crowe having scored a NZ record 17 centuries, Taylor is now next best on 13, one more than the 25-year-old Williamson whose future as a batsman and likely captain looks incredibly bright. His 166 at Perth followed his 140 in Canberra. Blessed with a wonderful temperament and superb technique, timing and placement are the keys to his success. Williamson doesn’t attempt to hammer the ball in the manner of the aggressive McCullum (who has a 38.74 average) but he accumulates runs at a good rate and his patience continues to pay dividends. Having been thrashed by
208 runs in the first test at Brisbane, New Zealand’s fight in Perth was highly commendable but both venues’ flat pitch was a bowler’s nightmare. The shocking state of the Kookaburra balls, which had to be replaced at regular intervals, was also a disgrace. While Tim Southee overcame his injury scare, the Black Cap bowlers failed to perform with the venom showed at the World Cup ODI when Tim Boult and Southee were lethal during Shane Bond’s too brief reign as bowling coach. Certainly the flat Aussie pitches have not helped though Mitchell Starc still bowled lightning bolts at the Wacca when taking four for 119 in New Zealand’s first innings.
Although David Warner has a big mouth for a little man, he remains one hell of a batsman. It may be a coincidence but since Bond’s decision to leave the national team to ply his trade in India, Boult, Southee, Corey Anderson and Jimmy Neesham have had injuries. Meanwhile full marks to coach Stephen Kearney for making no excuses after the Kiwis lost their rugby league series to England 2-1 after the hosts lost their final game 20-14 at Wigan. Certainly captain Simon Mannering and brilliant halves Shaun Johnson and Kieran Foran were badly missed but newcomer Kodi Nikorima showed the vision and ball skills at both hooker and halfback to suggest he is an exciting prospect for the future. Overall it was a dour contest with England’s strong defence negating a Kiwi team’s attack that dropped too much ball. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
