arewell Bill Mudgway. So said a host of community figures who gathered at Howick’s All Saints Anglican Church on Monday. They were there to celebrate the life of the man behind the microphone, finally silenced with his death at the age of 93. The funeral was attended by local body politicians, representatives of Howick RSA and Howick Pakuranga Grey Power, and many more whose lives had been touched by this gregarious man. His brother, Tony Mudgway, said he was a genuine people person. “His enthusiasm rubbed off on you. You never saw him down in the mouth.” Former Howick Borough Council Mayor, Morrin Cooper described Bill as a “man of the utmost integrity, loyalty and diligence”. In more recent times he
turned his interest to participation in the local community, serving on the Pakuranga Community Board, volunteer broadcasting on Howick Village Radio, compering the annual Howick village Santa Parade, the Howick Lions in the Park and Military Tattoo and the Stockade Hill Christmas lights switch-on. And, while he was not a Rotarian, he was honoured with Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellowship Award. “I used to frequently say how healthy his silver hair was looking,” Mr Cooper said. “He replied saying ‘snow only falls on the highest peaks’.” Former motorcycle Speedway rider, Bob Andrews met Bill when he arrived in New Zealand from Britain in 1962. One year, Mr Andrews said, when Bill was opening the envelope to introduce the person about to be inducted into the Speedway
Hall of Fame, Bill discovered it was himself. “You should have seen the surprise on his face He was a pleasure to know and my life is richer from knowing him.” The tales of earlier days were told in an email from a former Radio I Eye in the Sky pilot, Captain David Morgan, now chief flight operations and safety officer for Air New Zealand. “Bill was always courteous, never had a bad word and was never riled if there were operational problems,” he said. After sleeping in one morning, a pilot arrived at Ardmore Airport to find the aircraft ready for takeoff with engines revved up while Bill, the former World War II pilot, sat calmly waiting in the passenger seat. When the weather was too foggy to get into the air, Bill’s answer was to park the aircraft

outside the terminal, open the terminal windows wide and start the aircraft. “Bill said it would make the broadcast sound authentic and the public didn’t know,” Mr Morgan said. Bill’s funeral service came to an appropriate conclusion as the sounds of the Last Post rang out through the church and Howick RSA past president, Pat McClenaghan recited The Ode honouring the World War II veteran. In April last year The Times asked Bill the question, what did the war teach him? “That’s a lovely question and a hard one to answer,” he said. “To be grateful for every minute and hour.” Mr Morgan said: “All pilots [who flew with him] will look back on their early aviation careers and be grateful to Bill. “We can all agree, he is now truly the Eye in the Sky.”

ichael Metuakore, currently living in Howick, never thought his first job as a dancer would be for an international pop star. The 24-year-old had only two days to prepare and get to the auditions in Las Vegas that landed him a job as a backup dancer for world famous singer Jennifer Lopez. Auditioning alongside 300 other male dancers, some who had danced for Lady Gaga and Chris Brown, Metuakore says the experience was incredibly nerve-racking. “It was the most intense process a dancer can ever experience” he says. The passionate dancer was one of only seven males selected to perform in Jennifer Lopez’s residency show at Planet Hollywood. His determination and pure talent made him the only international dancer in the pack and one who has never had a job as a dancer before. “It’s crazy, this is my first job,” Metuakore says. However, this isn’t the first time the charismatic performer has had his talent noticed.

Rotarians deliver funds for aid in Nepal Two Pakuranga Rotarians have returned from earthquake stricken Nepal after presenting club funds and personal donations to their local guide. the Langtang area west of Everest was devastated in the April 25 earthquake. Mr Ward visited Nepal two years ago trekking with Tsering and, after the earthquake, was concerned about the devastation to Bridim. As a result the Rotary Club of Pakuranga raised $1350 from club funds and personal donations. Mr Ward presented them to
Tsering during his recent trip to help with the rebuilding. Bridim consists of 56 houses, all of which were damaged to some extent by the earthquake. The villagers rely for their income on trekkers passing through and staying over for bed and breakfast. Because of the earthquake damage, their income has been
eliminated. Tsering is the key village leader in Bridim and says the funds will contribute towards rebuilding the village’s community centre, as this is now the hub for villagers to cook and have meals. Mr Ward is expecting Tsering to give him suggestions for further aid where Rotary and individuals can help.

For the love of dog
News bites Poachers caught
Times reporter Marianne Kelly looks at the tragedy of unwanted dogs and efforts of the people who re-home them in part II of a series
O
ne of the over-whelming messages to the Times regarding Karma – the dog which was euthanised - was clearly that she was a loving mother to her puppies and that many humans could take a leaf out of her book. Auckland Council Animal Management manager Tracey Moore says there is a big message in the fact that Karma had puppies. “This was a stray dog which became pregnant by another dog. If dogs are de-sexed we don’t have these really sad situations – puppies born and nowhere to live. “There are far, far too many unwanted puppies being born in Auckland. We actively encourage dog owners to have
their dogs de-sexed.” She says there are also proven health reasons that show that de-sexing a dog – or a cat – is the right thing to do. There is a behavioural impact as well because aggression and the need to go wandering is limited. Consequently Animal Management is actively supporting the Hurrah campaign which provides de-sexing programmes for a gold coin donation. The organisation microchips the dog as well, a treatment also required under the law. The council donates the microchips and it’s one way, Ms Moore says, to make a big difference. Dog control officers who are
sent to bring in dogs reported wandering by members of the public have to be extremely resilient, Ms Moore says. “They are almost never dealing with people in a happy situation. We look for people who are really good at dealing with other people, especially in conflict situations. They deal with some nasty dog owners. But they love working with dogs, going out and about picking up strays and returning lost dogs to their homes. “Also they deal with a public safety aspect because dogs wandering and out of control are a liability, particularly for children,” Ms Moore says. “I see it as a community role because we have to keep Aucklanders safe from dog nuisance.
“It’s not just aggression but can also be barking. “Our officers need to be able to negotiate between owners and neighbours because prolonged barking is a nuisance under the act. “Dogs are allowed to bark,” she says. “But when it is too much it becomes a problem so our officers talk to owners to manage it, to see that the dog is getting enough exercise, is being properly treated or whether there are other issues.” An education approach is used at the start, she says. But Animal Management can issue penalties, such as a noise abatement notice. “In the extreme we can seize the dog, but that’s a last resort.”
First double decker bus run from the east By Marianne Kelly I’d rather be sitting here than down there said Auckland Mayor Len Brown from the comfort of Howick and Eastern Buses’ first commercial double decker bus run from Botany to Britomart yesterday. He was referring to a queue of cars sitting stationary in
pouring rain on Ti Rakau Drive. “This bus looks great, people can work on board, it’s relaxing and safe.” Building the new AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative) busways were a priority over cars, he said. “We need to clear our roads for buses, trucks and commercial vehicles,” he
said. “We have a clear focus and it’s succeeding, with an extra 20,000 people using public transport every day.” Sheryll Otway, Howick and Eastern’s general manager said the introduction of the bus heralded a new era for public transport. It’s a big day for the company, all our passengers and future passengers,” she
said. With the introduction of UBS charging points and eventually on-board WiFi and info-tainment systems buses would become passengers’ offices. Howick Local Board chairman David Collings said introduction of the double decker was well timed with AT’s public transport review currently underway.

Honorary fishery officers caught three fishers with a substantial haul of scallops and other seafood at a boat ramp on Bucklands Beach on the night of October 26. The recreational limit for scallops in the Auckland area is 20 per person a day. The Ministry of Primary Industries compliance officers are investigating a number of potential offences in relation to the incident.
Woman in hospital Traffic on Ti Rakau Drive came to a standstill on Sunday after a serious accident left a woman critically injured. The crash happened at about 8.15am at the intersection of Greenmount and Ti Rakau Drives in East Tamaki when a car and 4WD collided. The serious crash unit is investigating and the road was closed for several hours.
Manhunt following shooting Police are searching for two men in their early 20s after a shooting in Highland Park that left a man shot in the leg. There are warrants GEORGE for the arrest of MCDONALD Manurewa man George McDonald (pictured) and an associate. People are urged not to approach the pair who is believed to be armed and dangerous. Instead they can call Counties Manukau Police on 261-1300 or the anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800555-111.

RSA moves into a new era
News bites
By Marianne Kelly
A Pakuranga cafe has carved out a place in a national competition. The Aroma Shed Cafe in Cascades Road, Pakuranga is one of 78 finalists in the NZ Cafe of the Year competition 2016 and is vying for the title of Best Classic Kiwi Cafe awarded by the Restaurant Association of New Zealand. Results will be announced on December 7. Go to www. nzcafeoftheyear.co.nz for more details.
A
change of the guard at Howick RSA is gearing up to take the organisation further into the 21st century. Howick Local Board vice chair and local marriage celebrant, Adele White, has been appointed as patron, replacing the late World War II El Alamein veteran Watty McEwan who died last May aged 96. President of three years, Mike Cole, under RSA rules, has stepped down and vicepresident for the past three years, Ray Sangster has moved up to the role. Mr Cole says Ms White’s appointment as patron ticked all the boxes. “I looked up to see what was required of a patron and thought about what the modern RSA needed,” he says. “I had known Adele for a long time, of her former police service and the fact that she had served overseas in the Solomon Islands. The purpose of a patron is to help the

organisation get noticed, lend credibility and a politician can open doors. So it ticked all the boxes. For me it was all about the RSA and what the appointment would do for it. It was all about going forward.” Ms White’s late father, Basil Findlay, who died in 2001, served in the Air Force in World War II and was an active member of Howick RSA throughout his life. Given her Dad’s involvement, Ms White says “it felt right”.
“At times like this I wish he was around. He would have been immensely proud,” she says. “I can also see that the RSA is at a turning point and it is time to attract new members. “While the patron is more of a figurehead role, if the occasion arises I will be more than willing to contribute, and to bring a female perspective. It may be that over the next few years there will be many changes and it will be nice to be a part of them.”
Mr Sangster is the first associate member to become president of the Howick RSA. “I became involved when a mate of mine was in the Territorial Force and he insisted I come in for a beer. The next thing I was involved in the fishing section.” The rest was history. “I think having Adele on board is very in keeping with where the club wants to head. We want to become more focused on younger family people and for them to feel it’s a place they can come to, rather than the old perception.” Mr Sangster is also chairman of the club’s refurbishment committee which has been looking at further development of the RSA building in Wellington Street. With an upgrade complete in the upstairs main area, eyes have shifted to the downstairs basement. It’s seen as another revenue stream, Mr Sangster says, for example to be used for functions such as 21st birthdays, conferences, even small weddings.
Development identified for regeneration The new Ormiston Town Centre development and nearby Flat Bush sites, along with the Pakuranga town centre and council-owned sites in Howick are included in the Super City’s new urban regeneration agency’s plans.

his time of year is not only a great time to springclean your home but it is also a great time to ensure your health is in top shape – and what better place to start than to have your eyes tested. New Zealanders are going blind because the diseases that rob them of their sight are not being detected early enough to prevent blindness. In fact, in New Zealand it is estimated that 20 per cent of those registered blind are so from preventable causes. Compared to other countries, New Zealanders, it seems, are poor at having regular eye exams. Poor eye sight doesn’t just mean difficulty performing dayto-day tasks but can also mean loss of independence, increase in falls and other accidents and can also lead to depression. The eye is one of the most complex organs in your body and it relies on many intricate structures for you to see clearly – even slight changes can have a large effect on your vision and can be symptomatic of broader health issues. “It’s actually quite hard to notice when your own sight deteriorates as change often
occurs slowly,” explains Kristine Jensen, owner Optometrist at Eyes of Howick, “so an eyetest at least every two years is the only way to pick up on changes in the eye quickly.” Early detection of vision problems is one of the key preventers of serious and irreversible damage, and any change in your vision should be checked. Changing vision can be related to vascular, neurological, or medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, so it’s key to get an optometrist to test your eyes regularly even if you don’t want or need glasses. Kristine Jensen and Teresa Hsu are the highly skilled and therapeutically qualified Optometrists at Eyes of Howick and believe in spending a good 45 minutes testing your eyes. “I believe anything less is a compromise so you can rest assured we take the time to get to know you and your visual requirements so we can provide you with the best advice or visual solution if required.” If you can spare 45 minutes of your time once every one or two years then you should visit Eyes of Howick for their trusted
eye test services which cover everything from… • A detailed eye health exam – using the latest in diagnostic technology to check for conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. • Assessing your vision – to make sure you can see clearly at all distances. • Recommending the best vision correction for you – whether it’s new glasses or contact lenses or simply a discussion on how to optimise your eye health. To make it easier for you and your family to have your eyes tested we are running a 2-for-1 eye exam offer in November. Simply mention this offer when you book your appointment for you, a friend or a family member and you will only pay for one exam! Simply phone Eyes of Howick today to book your appointment.

Body found in motel The body of a 34-year-old woman was found in a room at the Golflands Motel, Botany Road on Tuesday afternoon. Celebration of inventiveness William Bradley of Saint Kentigern College won the People’s Choice Award for TV planner at the 15th annual Bright Sparks Awards – in association with Vodafone NZ – last Thursday night. Stephen Waters, general manager strategic engagement at The Skills Organisation which founded the awards in 2000, says the competition is a true celebration of inventiveness. “The awards give bright young Kiwis a platform to show their ingenuity and emerge as future leaders in the New Zealand electro-technology industry.”

SKIN CANCER
The Howick Village Business Association is proudly supported by:
www.portofino.co.nz
A Day...
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand. Our skin cancer rates are among the highest in the world. In fact, the incidence of melanoma in New Zealand and Australia is four times higher than in Canada, the US and the UK. Research suggests that 2 in 3 New Zealanders will develop a non-melanoma skin cancer during their lifetime! More than 300 New Zealanders die from skin cancer each year. Light skin type, a large number of moles and excess sun exposure (particularly episodes of sunburn), especially in childhood and adolescence, are the major predictors of skin cancer risk. According to the recent National Melanoma Summit 2011, New Zealand’s melanoma incidents are increasing and our death rate in women for 2003-2007 was 40% higher than in Australia. Our high ultraviolet (UV) levels and low ozone layers account for these staggering statistics. There are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It can spread rapidly and can be life-threatening if left untreated. Melanoma starts in skin cells called melanocytes. These are the cells that make melanin, which gives skin its colour. Most melanomas are caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Non-melanoma skin cancers are far more common than melanoma. However, they tend to be less serious than melanoma (as long as they are treated). The two main types are basal cell cancers and squamous cell cancers. They usually occur on areas of the skin that have been in the sun. They tend to be related to a person’s lifetime or “cumulative” exposure to UV radiation. Get to know your skin by checking it regularly. Make sure you check your entire body. That way you can notice any changes that could mean skin cancer. If a freckle, mole or lump is changing in size, shape or colour or you have a sore that doesn’t heal, do see your doctor for a check. Skin cancer is diagnosed by physical examination and biopsy by the GP. Often photos are taken and kept in your medical records for comparison at a later time. Bridging 100th year

he’s lived all over the world, and now calls Howick home, but she still misses good Swiss cheese. Howickian Joan MacPhee celebrated her 100th birthday on October 21 with a fondue party at home followed by a celebration at the Howick Bridge Club on Pakuranga Road a couple of days later. Sydney-born Mrs MacPhee has lived in America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Christchurch before settling in Howick. The centenarian says she has been travelling since she was 18 months old. “At one point we lived in Chicago, America during World War I.” Mrs MacPhee (née Cunliffe) arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand as a child. As a young woman she went to England with her mother, Grace Cunliffe who was halfEnglish. “And then she didn’t like it when she got there. It was too cold!” says Mrs MacPhee. So mother and daughter went to Durban, South Africa where Mrs MacPhee worked for New Zealand South British Insurance (now NZI). She was later transferred to East Africa where she was in charge of recruitment. In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania she met her husband-to-be, Kenneth MacPhee, at a party. “He was tall, dark – very

good looking as a matter of fact!” she says. The couple was married by the district commissioner of Dar es Salaam on July 3, 1948 and Mrs MacPhee had her only daughter, Sarah, in Durban. The MacPhees lived all over Africa including Tanganyika and Mrs MacPhee stayed home to look after Sarah. In 1955, Mr MacPhee was transferred to Hong Kong where he worked as a judge and the family lived a busy life on the exclusive Victoria Peak. When her husband retired, they left Hong Kong for Switzerland where they lived for nearly 20 years in a beautiful house overlooking Lake Geneva with a vineyard.
“Once people knew we had a house in Switzerland all sorts of people came to stay!” says Mrs MacPhee. Later, Mr MacPhee moved to Kent and died in 1981 while Mrs MacPhee remained in Switzerland until a family visit to New Zealand in 1989 convinced her to return in 1992. She volunteered for 10 years at the Howick Information Centre, played golf, tennis, bridge and bowls, and also learnt to play the violin and viola. With one great granddaughter, and another just born on Tuesday, Mrs MacPhee says she’s fortunate to have come this far. “I think it depends on your genes and good luck.”

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, November 5, 2015 — 9
34 pumped up years The Times continues to thank the businesses who have supported us over the years. This week we speak to ‘Mad’ Mike Johnson, the driving force behind Howick Tyres and Alignment in Wellington Street.
I
t’s not often one goes from changing tyres in the workshop to saying vows at the altar, but that’s exactly what ‘Mad’ Mike Johnson did. “The day we moved to Wellington Street I got married the same day so I only worked till noon!” says Mike. As a result November 28, 1981 marks double celebrations for Mike and his wife, Carol Johnson – their wedding anniversary and the day Howick Tyres and Alignment set up in Wellington Street. The young couple had just bought their first home in Bucklands Beach and were putting in the hard yards at work. They then sold their house in 1986 to purchase Howick Tyres and Alignment which Mike had been managing up until that point. Born just “a 100 yards away” from the premises, Mike says his love of talking to people landed him in the tyre trade instead of in the mechanic’s bay. After more than 30 years, he still loves what he does. “I’ve always said the day I wake up and don’t want to go to work is the day I sell the business.” Howick Tyres was renamed to Beaurepaires Howick in
1999 and recently reverted to Howick Tyres and Alignment but Mike remains the same. The father of three adult children says he’s always done “mad” things such as making Minions from tyres and giving away tyre-grown potatoes with every tyre sold but he’s also earned the nickname ‘Jabberjaw’ along the way for his gift of the gab. However, it’s also earned him respect as the earnest tyre man locals can trust. “I had a young girl barely out of her teens come in the other day and say ‘granddad told me to come here’. And that’s what we’re about. “Whether it’s ladies, teens, children, we treat them all the same and they aren’t scared to deal with us.” And there’s no “big bad men” lurking in Howick Tyres’ immaculate workshop which has been freshly painted, neatly maintained and even a carpeted alignment bay. “I’ve got a great team of guys working with me. I’ve always believed that if you look like a professional, work like a professional then you are a professional.” The Howick Tyres team will

even pump up tyres for their customers every six weeks free of charge to ensure they get the best out of their tyres. “My theory is the longer your tyres last the happier I am and it means people will come back.” A proud supporter of local charities and schools including Bellyful which provides meals for new mothers and families with an illness (Carol helps out in regular cook-athons), Mike goes the extra mile for people. That’s why the relationship Mike has built with the Times has been important. “I’ve never advertised with a different paper. It’s always been the Times. Reay and Brian [Times directors] are such Howick-minded people who support the area and I love that about them.”

Cool down for summer with a revitalised heat pump A
cool cat has arrived in the eastern suburbs, bringing cleaner air, smaller power bills and all round satisfaction. Airify, the nation’s only heat pump cleaning franchise is now bringing its service to locals in time for summer thanks to local franchisee Usman Irshad. After working for more than 10 years as an operations manager for a global corporation, Usman decided to move in a new direction and be a part of a reputable franchise. “I thought it’s a really cool service and I was impressed with the benefits it brought to the workplace and home.” Boasting more than 20 years’ experience cleaning and servicing heat pumps, Airify is the go-to company for anyone with a heat pump. In recent times, the need to keep heat pumps in shipshape has been well publicised on shows such as Fair Go and has been endorsed by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). “People should clean their heat pumps every 12 months in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.” In doing so, consumers will reap the benefits of a well-maintained heat pump for years to come, says Usman.
USMAN IRSHAD
“People often notice a huge difference after the Airify experience. Their heat pumps increase about 30-40% in efficiency and they can end up saving 35-60% on their power consumption whilst increasing the lifespan of their heat pump.” In fact, it is imperative that people act now if they want to enjoy a sweat-free summer.
“A lot of people switch from heating to air conditioning and because of the amount of dust and pollens drawn into heat pumps during winter and spring it can block the unit causing it to leak. That, in turn, causes that terrible bad sock smell that nobody wants lingering around for summer!” Dust also triggers issues such as allergies and asthma, exacerbating any respiratory issues apparent in young children with developing immune systems. Furthermore, there could be drastic consequences if heat pumps are neglected, warns Usman. “We would expect a wellmaintained heat pump to last for 20 years. However, studies have indicated that a poorly maintained heat pump will only last for about six to seven years.” In addition, as seen in Fair Go, outside units can become infested with cockroaches which are attracted to the warm, dark hiding places within the unit. “We’ve seen some terribly
costly faults and repairs as a result of this,” says Usman. “That’s why we rely on the Airify cockroach treatment which is a sure solution to rid these determined little critters from ruining your summer.” Airify technicians are all trained to a national standard and receive specialist knowledge from industry experts. Through consistency, reliability and a proven track record, Airify comes highly recommended by leading heat pump manufacturer, Mitsubishi. Technicians spend 45 minutes to an hour on each unit using
patented specialist equipment to thoroughly clean and sanitise every nook and cranny. Affordable and convenient, Airify enables families to live healthier, cleaner and more efficient lifestyles. “We always say to our customers that ‘you’ll save on power what you spend on service’. And the repeat business we receive is a testament to the fact that our customers know the value of caring for their heat pumps.” A fully mobile service with handy online booking, all Airify technicians carry a mobile EFTPOS/credit card machine for card payment convenience. Home owners receive a complete service record and gentle reminders when their heat pump is due for a check and the friendly Airify team prides itself on doing a proper job. “We’re a family-run business and always aim to exceed all expectations when it comes to servicing heat pumps and educating customers.” To book a full heat pump clean with Usman and his team of professionals, contact Airify now and breathe easy for summer! RAVE REVIEWS ➤ “Efficient friendly service, cleaned my heat pump and gave me advice on how best to use it. It’s made a huge difference to its performance!” – Lisa ➤ “The pumps look brand new, and when we operated them early the next day the house filled with the most aromatic warmth. We shall not hesitate in letting friends know of our experience, and look forward to a return visit next year and thereafter.” – David

hey called him every name they could possibly think of. He was held up against the precipice of a staircase with the strap of his bag, ridiculed, harassed and bullied. But the final straw that broke Angus Slade was the time a student stuffed plastic down his throat while the teacher looked away. “I almost choked and couldn’t breathe. I ran to a water fountain and tried to drink some water but couldn’t. Finally I managed to gulp it down,” said 16-year-old Angus who was invited from Wellington as a guest speaker at the Big Stand, an annual antibullying assembly in Howick College recently. Sharing his horrifying story of shame he said: “I was in a very dark space and had suicidal thoughts. But the school didn’t treat it as a problem. “I wanted to die because someone wants to joke away.” His parents decided to home school him for a year and a half after which Angus felt confident of facing blue skies again at a different school. “Look at every history book and it tells you that the world is full of bullies. Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional,” said the young speaker who now has the confidence to face an audience and encourage other students to openly talk about being bullied.
BRINGING THE courage: Angus Slade and the members of The Big Stand.
Photo Farida Master
The turning point in his life was making the award-winning video against bullying that won him international attention. Angus got the chance to meet the Google bosses in Sydney after his video went viral. He says the worst thing he could have done was to break down in class. “I had a lot of stuff going on with my aunt in the UK being diagnosed with cancer and mum going to visit her in UK.” Life in school was hell which is why he believes that “doing nothing and looking the other way is a major problem.” Christabel Williams, Year 10 student at Howick College sang a beautiful rendition of the song titled Blood from Stone and was accompanied by Sabastian Munro on the guitar. It was her way of expressing her pain and coming to terms with the bullying issues that deeply affected her self esteem at intermediate school.

The college’s pipe band, the Auckland under-19 regional champions for the past six years, has been invited to perform alongside the world’s best marching bands and cultural groups at the Tattoo in February. It will be the first time the band has performed in a military tattoo or a performance of this scale. The 20 senior band members will join a cast of more than 1200 musicians and dancers performing to a potential capacity crowd of 100,000 people over the four nights. Piper and teacher Andrew Lightfoot says performing as part of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a once-in-alifetime opportunity. “We are fortunate that it is an international event happening locally. This is happening for us at the right time of the year.” Mr Lightfoot says the band’s selection may have been based on its traditional pipe band approach, for example using the traditional uniform and approach to marching. “We take a more traditional rather than a concert approach, although we do concert routines some times, but not forgetting our military roots.” Piping and drumming has been part of the school’s repertoire since it was founded in the 1950s. It remains a strong
part of St Kentigern’s culture, with pipers playing at the weekly school assembly and chapel service, as well as all significant school events. They also perform at community occasions, such as Anzac Day ceremonies, the Auckland Santa Parade and tour overseas every three years. They regularly take part in piping and drumming championships. Across St Kentigern’s co-ed college, boy’s and girls’ schools, about 100 pupils take part in piping and drumming under Mr Lightfoot’s tutelage. ■■ More at www.festival.co.nz.

Somerville students wish upon a tree By Rumer-Grace Archer
they are children, they are very aware of the world. “In the spirit of age they have a full conscience about their role in the world,” he says. After creating his first wishing tree in Brazil, Dr Teles has taken his project to a number of countries creating Wishing Trees in Portugal, Germany and Greece and now New Zealand.

omerville Intermediate students had their wishes come to life two weeks ago. Brazilian professor Paulo Teles brought his interactive sensorial installation art and technology workshop to the school to produce the Wishing Tree. The Wishing Tree, Dr Teles describes, is a multimedia interpretation of an oriental legend about a tree that has the power to fulfil the wishes attached to it. His idea was to build a tree made of realised desires in the form of recycled objects, which were at one point in time wished by someone. The students and teachers at Somerville chose to build a Pohutukawa tree out of rubbish from their school lunches. Wishes produced in the form of drawings, written signs, and audio and video clips were attached to the tree and projected on a screen. Distance sensors, adapted by Dr Teles from recycled car parts, attached to the tree rendered it interactive and the students’ movements and gestures around the tree projected and changed the animated images, sounds and video clips on the screen in front of them creating a fascinating multimedia experience. Dr Teles conceived this project in 2012 at the University of Campinas after thinking about how he could apply his knowledge in art and technology in schools and art education. At the heart of the project is the Dr Teles’ idea of EduCommunication, which he describes is a form of education in which people produce their own knowledge. He believes the age group of children from 9-14 is ideal because although

Folkloristic musical contemporary works A vibrant programme of folk-influenced contemporary music will keep concert-goers on the edge of their seats at the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s next concert. Bold Worlds: Fire and ice, features two works especially written for the conductor and guest soloist. The programme includes Peru Negro by Jimmy Lopez, which was composed for the Bold Worlds conductor, Peruvian maestro Migual Harth-Bedoya and Kimmo Hakola’s Clarinet Concerto, written for world-renowned Finnish clarinettist Kari Kriikku. Inspired by traditional songs of Afro-Peruvian music, Peru Negro has been reviewed as being like a ‘tropical storm’, with particular tribute to its ‘outgoing composition, boundless in energy,
with much brass and percussion, fierce rhythms and a smashing ending’. In 2001 Kriikku premiered Hakola’s colourful klezmerinfluenced Clarinet Concerto to critical acclaim. Kriikku has been lauded as a ‘physically flamboyant player of Olympian virtuosity’ and last played with the NZSO in 2009. The final piece in the coming programme is Concerto for Orchestra by Witold Lutoslawski. It pays tribute to Polish folk music and is considered the crowning achievement of the folkloristic style in Lutoslawski’s work. ■■ Bold Worlds: Fire and ice is presented by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at 7pm on November 6 at the Auckland Town Hall, Upper Queen Street, Central Auckland.

The BIG Christmas Sale!
Joy through art By Natalie Brittan
D
eath may have followed her all her life, but through art, Adrienne Jury found life. The long-time Pakuranga artist retired in September after more than 32 years of teaching at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts in Pakuranga. In 1982, with an invalid husband and five young children to feed, Ms Jury had to find a way to make ends meet. Her father had died from a heart attack earlier, and her mother had her own needs. Born in Christchurch, Ms Jury went to the Canterbury College School of Arts (now the University of Canterbury’s School of Fine Arts) in Christchurch on scholarship. She first began teaching children art after school and on Saturdays in 1982 before going on to teach adults and becoming the artist in residence about five years later. She taught at the site in Reeves Road which housed the Fisher Gallery and the Pakuranga Community and Cultural Centre, the home of the Pakuranga Arts Society.

The two were combined in 2001, resulting in the public arts centre known as Te Tuhi. “It’s changed a lot and they promised me it wouldn’t!” Ms Jury says. While Ms Jury continued to find joy at work, life at home remained grim with her husband dying from a hereditary stroke disease in 1988 and three of her four sons inheriting the same condition. Her adopted daughter remains healthy and has two grandsons who are often the subjects of Ms Jury’s paintings.
After her husband, Ms Jury had a partner, who later died of cancer. Despite the sadness in her life, Ms Jury’s art thrived winning the Iris Fisher Art Award and gaining numerous prizes in her lifetime. She says her time at Te Tuhi has been lovely. “Work helped a great deal. I suppose it was the art that really kept me going because I felt I wasn’t rubbish. “I’m proud of myself that I’ve made it because it was pretty awful a lot of the time.”

ishermen and women will throw a line out into the ocean for a good cause next Sunday, November 15, at the Bucklands Beach Lions Club Fishing Contest. What’s more, the public will be able to bid on the fish that catches their eye at an auction held later that day at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club in Half Moon Bay. With an impressive line up of prizes up for grabs including a half day fishing charter, a trip to Waiheke Island, a learn-to-sail course, two liftout boat washes, as well as goodies from Top Catch, Hunting & Fishing Botany, Burnsco and Big Fish, there’s every reason to enter. Organiser Roger Robinson says all proceeds from the charity event will go to the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club’s youth sailing programmes and activities which benefit sailing teams from St Kentigern, Pakuranga, Macleans and Botany Colleges. “We’ve run fishing fundraisers for more than 11 years, raising more than $100,000 for young people in our community,” says Roger. “We’ve had some pretty big snapper in the past, some up to 6kg.” Roger hopes people will turn out to support the event either by entering the competition or attending the auction. “With the generosity of the public and the fishing community we hope to continue supporting our youth.”

ll around the world, the sea and wave action is a problem with erosion and it amazes me that a firm can charge $347,000 for design costs. To me, the solution is to disperse the force of the waves as opposed to building a wall that the waves smash into, causing more problems.
Come on guys, it has been done many times before. Open your eyes and come up with a design at a reasonable cost. What do I know? (I’m) just someone with two eyes and common sense but no university degree. Barry Wood Cockle Bay
Super idea not best solution
MP Jami-Lee Ross is right not to agree with Grey Power’s proposal (Times, October 21) to limit recipients to only those who have lived in NZ for 40 years. Grey Power’s concern about the diminishing superannuation funds is legitimate. Their proposal though is not the best solution. Many who are on Super may have lived in NZ for over 40 years but have never paid taxes because they have never worked their whole lives, such as those who are on benefit and a lot of housewives or people on disability. How fair is it to those who have lived less than 40 years in NZ but who have worked 39 years and 11 months, and paid taxes all those years, and not be eligible for retirement money? The best approach is to rework the superannuation scheme where tax contributors are paid according to the amount of taxes they have paid. And for those who have not paid taxes, well they can continue to collect a flat weekly benefit which they have collected all their lives anyway. But at age 65, it will just be called Super instead of benefit. People who paid taxes shouldn’t be receiving the same amount of retirement benefit as those who have never put money into the system such as the case right now. Our tax dollars go to pay for everyone’s superannuation, welfare and disability payments and many more. Madge Kho Howick

Re: “It’s a dog’s life” (Times, October 15). I agree with Christine Duncan. I used to walk before work each day and it is as she said. The dog has been there since a puppy and what was grass is dirt and that is what the dog is on all day. I have just returned from walking my dog past there. The lab barked but is obviously tied up on a short lead as I could only see it by a large tree. (It) didn’t come the short distance to the fence. I have never seen it off the chain and I can hear it howling and barking when there is stormy weather, this can be day and night. I worry when Guy Fawkes is here that it will break loose and get run over. Noelene Bowen Half Moon Bay
Peace is possible
We live in a war-torn world where governments war against governments, men and women are killed all in the name of protecting their nation and their people. The price of a human life is insignificant in the eyes of both enemies; they kill with no compunction what so ever. We, in NZ, fund a military
system which is designed to kill our enemies. Likewise the enemy has its military system which is designed to kill us, their enemies. This is insanity of immense proportions blurred over by our unquestioning politicians, defence department appointees and priests of all persuasions. These seem more concerned with keeping their salary package than finding enduring solutions, while the blinded apathetic public is lulled into complacency by the endless TV diversions. Just so long as our consumptive lifestyle is unthreatened and all goes just as it did last week, last month, last year, last decade – it’s okay. The taxes you and I pay support this insanity. It doesn’t bear thinking about. “Love your neighbour as yourself” and “do unto him as you would have done unto you”, these are pivotal truths which spring out of Christianity [and many other religions] as a profound understanding of our human nature. When we deny truth, its unique position in our lives, we deny ourselves a solution to these murderous events of violence and hate rising in our country and in
the world, certainly in the Middle East. Knowing the truth does set us free. Deception, hypocrisy and the use of violence burden us all. There is a better solution. Ian George, Howick
Remove the poor dog right now
I agree wholeheartedly with everything Shelagh Glynan wrote (Times, October 22). This is not acceptable or responsible animal ownership. These owners are not being “lovely” to this poor dog. Where do concerned, sickened and frustrated people like me go to seek help for this animal? I tried SPCA and Animal Welfare for Karma dog recently, with no help until it was too late to save her. This dog should be rehomed immediately. The laws of the land have little power to stop animal mistreatment at its root and is ineffectual at nipping this type of behaviour in the bud. No second chance for these “lovely” people I say, because they do not have the passion for the dog to be part of their family. It is a disposable ‘fad’ which, when the novelty to walk it once a day has become
a chore, they will simply abandon it (Karma; sounds familiar?). This is happening everyday somewhere in NZ yet we pride ourselves on being a caring nation. J.Suter Half Moon Bay

Experts In Our Field
Smiles all round for the holiday season
ADVERTORIAL JH10251A
It’s been a stellar year for PDP Denture Studio and it’s only about to get better with clients flashing new smiles in time for Christmas. The high profile denture specialist in Pakuranga’s Edgewater Drive has been at the top of its game for nearly
20 years thanks to its commitment to excellence. Founder and award-winning Clinical dental technician, Leah Taylor, is looking exceptionally radiant this year for all the right reasons. The newly elected vice president of the New Zealand Institute of Dental Technologists (NZIDT) coordinated the organisation’s national conference held in Auckland recently. “We had lectures from world experts in our field and learnt about what is happening in the industry overseas. “After that, we
held a ball and rolled out the red carpet for a glamorous evening Hollywood style,” Leah says. The success of the event speaks volumes about her abilities not only in the clinic but in other matters too. Well-respected among her peers, Leah is on the mediation committee for the NZIDT handling disputes and providing guidance for other Clinical Dental Technicians. She has been invited to lecture at the University of Otago’s school of dentistry and is only one of two practitioners in Clinical Dental Technology to be selected to be on the accreditation panel for the
university’s postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. Not surprisingly, Leah’s reputation precedes her in
the public domain as well. “We have clients from all corners of the world including the UK, US and from islands as remote as Tokelau!” In fact, word of mouth remains the greatest contributor to PDP Denture Studio’s success. “We never fail to surprise our lovely patients with a beautiful bunch of flowers when they’ve referred us,” Leah says. The renowned practice offers comprehensive denture services from full to partial or Implant retained dentures, as well as mouth and snore guards.

We all know how good he is, we just haven’t seen it for a while and it was in this crucial time that he made some really crucial decisions and kicks. He picked up the team and sort of said “come on, follow me” and, making that decision, he got that drop goal and that penalty. So he is very

’m one of many who are incredibly proud of our team. It was so fantastic so see them finish the job just like skipper Richie McCaw said. One person who deserves recognition is coach Steve Hansen. What he’s done for the team is incredible and his ability to instil in them a sense of calm during what could have been a very stressful time. Leading that team, he had complete belief in them and knew how the All Blacks should act and carry themselves. He is a very smart man. Watching him last week in interviews, he’s been so relaxed and so calm and that was a really great sign. You could see it in the boys too, how calm and comfortable they were and it shows just how important that mentality is in a game like rugby and even more so in the Rugby World Cup. Earning World Rugby player of the year, Dan Carter definitely proved he’s a star. We did get a bit rattled in the second half when the Wallabies scored those tries but you could see him stand up to the challenge.
WORLD CHAMPIONS 2015 Thank you for a fabulous competition!
deserving of this award. Captain Richie McCaw was outstanding. I think of lot of people agree he’s one of the best players ever and he knew what to do in those crucial moments. When it comes to the All Blacks, there’s something different about them. They know how to play the whole 80 minutes – they can lift that intensity. Right now, they are the best team, the best group to represent that jersey. Hansen has done an unbelievable job with the squad and they are just going to get stronger despite some experienced players leaving. With some of these new and younger players in the team, Hansen will build them up to be just as successful. It’s up to them to take that opportunity.

It’s all over! I think we need six quiet recovery weeks after that, wow. Right from the start of the tournament it seemed like the football-mad English were ready to welcome the rugby world with open arms. Jumping behind all the minnows like Japan made the event so good. We went to Richmond fanzone to watch the final against our old foes from across the Tasman. There were an estimated 10,000 people there and all we could see were black jerseys with a few brave Wallabies supporters in gold spattered through the crowd. People were scrummaging and
doing line out lifts all through the crowd. Such a fun and exciting atmosphere. After a nervous week of waiting, 5 minutes into the game we knew our boys in black were here to play and we could settle into it. We thought everyone was just superb. Every player had played their part and nailed their roles with excellence. The Ben Smith send-off was probably the correct decision and it invited the Aussie’s back into it but otherwise the All Blacks were a class above. We are so proud of the boys and watching them lift the Rugby World Cup again sent the masses into a rapturous cheer.

• 3-4 kumara, peeled • 2 tbs Maille mustard • 4 lamb shoulder chops • 1 tsp Gregg’s rosemary, chopped finely • 1 tsp Gregg’s garlic granules • 2-3 kiwifruit, peeled, diced • 2 beetroot, peeled and grated • 425g Pams mango slices, diced • 1 broccoli Also need: salt, pepper, olive oil
Method:
Heat the oven to 180OC. Cut the kumara into four or six pieces depending on the size of the kumara. Place the kumara pieces on a baking tray and mix with mustard and a little oil. Season and roast for 30-35 mins. Season the chops and add to the kumara to roast or barbecue until cooked. Chop the rosemary and garlic together so a little finer. Put into a cup and add 1 tbs of boiling water to soften for a minute or two. Mix the kiwifruit, beetroot, mango, rosemary and garlic with some olive oil and season well. Cut the broccoli into flowerets and cook in a little water until just cooked. Serve the kumara, broccoli and the roasted lamb with some salsa on the side. ➤ AND MORE: • Serve with a rocket salad instead of broccoli. • Add some fresh chopped chilli to the salsa. worth it: Invest in a good mattress that is neither too firm nor too soft.
SC3463-V2
ADD ROOM, ADD VALUE
Decor for sleep Invest in a good mattress that is neither too firm nor too soft and that will give you a good night’s sleep. If you have the budget and the space, opt for a king or queen size bed so there’ll be enough room for both of you to be comfortable. Light, however faint, can affect your sleep even though you may not necessarily be aware of it. Make your room completely dark by putting in drapes or opaque blinds. Bedroom lighting should never be too bright, so be sure to choose
bulbs that give a warm light. Colours influence mood as well as the ability to sleep well, so painting the walls of the bedroom a soothing tone is always a good idea. Pastel shades are perfect. Don’t put your bed near the door or against a wall with a window. Follow these simple tips and rediscover the pleasure of sleeping soundly. Of course, these decorating tips won’t be of much help if your partner snores!

t’s common knowledge that watching television in the bedroom is a no-no. But some opinion has it that it’s not a good idea to read in bed either. Instead, organise a reading area that includes a comfortable armchair. For a good sleep, remove all unnecessary items and accessories from the room so as to create a soothing, relaxing atmosphere rather than one that always makes you want to clean up.

Shopping around for power R
esearch is showing that people over the age of 60 are the least likely to switch electricity providers and could be missing out on a better deal with their power. So the Electricity Authority has set out to bust some of the myths that are putting people off from shopping around for their power. If all eligible Kiwi households had switched to a cheaper deal last year, they could have collectively saved $281 million or an average annual saving of $162, the authority says. Switching power providers is straightforward. The authority says 90 per cent of New Zealanders who have switched found it to be an easy process. It involves checking whether the current deal is the best one on the website www.whatsmynumber.org. nz, and then clicking through to Consumer NZ’s website www. powerswitch.org.nz to start the switching process. Alternatively once the cheapest provider is established, that retail company will sort the switch over the phone. Choice of the electric-
ity supply depends on the performance of the local distributor and Transpower, the company that operates the national electricity grid. No matter which electricity retailer is chosen, the reliability of supply will be the same. When switching providers, there is no danger of the power being cut off during the process. The only thing that changes is the provider that is sending out the bills. The new retailer takes care of the switching process. Many different electricity retailers offer different payment options to make it easier. Some offer a way to level out all the payments over the year. This can take the sting out of the winter months when power bills tend to increase. Some providers accommodate prepaying so that spending can be more easily controlled. Some allow weekly payments rather than monthly. Payment options can also be discussed with a current provider and should be considered when shopping around. It’s worth checking because retailers are not all the same. There are 29 retail brands oper-
ating in New Zealand, with at least seven different brands on offer in every region. All providers offer different deals to suit different people. There are also additional ser-
vices, loyalty programmes and other rewards to consider. ■■ The best deals can be checked online at www.whatsmynumber. org.nz. People who are not confident online can visit their lo-
cal Citizens Advice Bureau. The Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau is at the Library Building, Aylesbury St, Pakuranga, phone 576-8331 or 0800-367-222; email pakuranga@cab.org.nz.

Solar energy is easily harnessed L
ast year’s residential solar connections less than 10kW grew to 1336 in Auckland, the most of any region in the country. Nationally, close to 4500 residential connections had been made by the end of the year, according to the New Zealand Electrical Authority (NZEA). Combined, they have the capacity of 15.8MW. In percentage terms, the upper South Island regions of Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough had the highest uptake rates, NZEA says. In Tasman, 0.86 per cent of residential energy connections have some form of solar generation.
Big changes in solar power buy-back rates occurred in 2014, with most retailers choosing to more closely align these to wholesale power prices. Buy-back rates are the amount electricity retailers will pay for any electricity generated by consumers’ solar systems and exported back into the local network. The NZEA says these 2014 changes have significantly reduced the economic viability of large solar installations on residential properties. “However, if most of the solar power can be used on site, then the change to buyback rates will have little effect

on an individual’s pay-back period for solar investments.” In February 2014, Vector introduced a trial scheme for customers to lease a combined battery and solar panel system. By using batteries, solar energy can be stored and then used during evening peaks. Vector is able to control the units remotely, and this may allow some improvements in network efficiency, the NZEA says. “This scheme was very popular for Vector customers, and the 250 units allocated for the trial were quickly acquired by customers.”

Cheng eyes LPGA tour By Rumer-Grace Archer After playing her first year of professional golf, Liv Cheng has returned home to Howick for November in the hopes of finding support for the next step in her career. Liv Cheng Having won the inaugural KFC Golf Scholarship at the beginning of the year, the former Macleans College student had an impressive start to her first professional golf year with the Australia Ladies Professional Golf tour (ALPG) in Australia and New Zealand.Among her goals, Cheng had her first win at the McLeod ALPG Pro-Am, made the top 10 ALPG money list, and also made both cuts for the two European events RACV Ladies Masters and NZ Open. Aiming for the LPGA tour next year, Cheng says it hosts “essentially the best players in the world” including Auckland rival Lydia Ko. “At this level, there isn’t a lot of room for mediocre, you have to be playing well...there are 144 other girls out there every week who want it just as bad as you do,” she says. For Cheng, qualifying for the LPGA is not simple and the three-stage Qualifying School is incredibly expensive. Having just recently made it through stage two, Cheng will

be playing stage three in Daytona Florida in December, hoping to make the Top 20 and gain full LPGA status. Making the most of her month at home in Howick, Cheng has organised a golf fundraiser on November 10 at the Pakuranga golf club to raise money for travelling and entry fees which she would not be able to afford on her own. Cheng will also be playing the Anita Boon Pro-Am as part the ALPG at the North Shore Golf Club on November 12 and 13. Hoping to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, the 22-year-old will also play in the Ladies European Tour in Morocco in December to help increase her world ranking. After starting golf at the age of 10, Cheng received a golf scholarship to Pepperdine University in California in 2010 where she decided golf was something she wanted to pursue as a career. “Golf as a profession requires a lot of sacrifices, however, it also comes with plenty of privileges and I’m truly grateful everyday that I get the opportunity to wake up and do what I love.” ■■ The Golf fundraiser with Liv Cheng is on Tuesday November 10 at the Pakuranga Golf Club. $25 Individual Stableford, #1 and #10 tee times 12pm-1pm, sign up in the Proshop.

Like father like son By Rumer-Grace Archer
M
itch Clark is on the rise in rugby league after following in his dad’s footsteps, signing for the Bradford Bulls in Yorkshire this year. The last time we spoke to the former Botany Downs Secondary College student in 2012, his league career was just taking off after signing to play for the Penrith Panthers in Sydney. When an opportunity came up to play for the Bradford Bulls, a team his father has played for, Clark says he leapt at the opportunity. Having played last season for Doncaster, the 22 year-old has already noticed how different the style is in the UK, but is taking on the challenge with enthusiasm. “The way they play is quite different, they are very big and lift weights and so it was quite physical and hard condition wise training in the cold and snow,” he says. Despite the snow and occasional frozen field, Clark left a lasting impression and was named Doncaster’s forward of the year for 2015. What Clark enjoys the most about playing league, he admits, is not the physical side but the opportunity to build friendships. “It’s hard to explain. “Over in the UK, especially

Kiwis playing over there, they all link up together and you get good mates out of it,” he says. Rugby League has always been a part of the family with his dad Trevor Clark having played professionally in the UK, including the Bradford Bulls, for 12 years. After starting young with the Howick Hornets Clark has followed his dad’s path closely confessing he is “probably my biggest role-model.” Playing for the Penrith Panthers in the 2013 Under 20s grand final against the Junior Warriors has been a highlight

for Clark, along with the opportunity to play for the Junior Kiwis against the Kangaroos in Sydney a week later. Starting the pre season with the Bradford Bulls in early November, Clark says it will be full on straightaway with weights and fitness testing. Clark is particularly eager to be back after a risky tackle resulted in a broken arm in August leaving him unable to finish the season. “I had to get a plate and six screws; I missed the last eight weeks of the season. As soon as I start back it’s going to be full on,” he says.

All Blacks bow out on a high Agnew’s Angle
A
s one of the doubting Thomas’, I am delighted Dan Carter bowed out of international rugby with a World Cup winning performance and man of the match honours in their 34-17 triumph against Australia. That the International Rugby Player of the Year award should follow for a man who has amassed a world record 1598 points in 112 tests seems apt for a man who notched 99 wins when wearing the silver fern. In truth, apart from a great 41-13 Eden Park victory against the Wallabies, the injury plagued first-five was only a shadow of his former self. But once he hit the World Cup play-offs, he was sublime in playing a leading role in the defeats of France, South Africa and the Wallabies. In becoming the first team to win back-to-back world crowns and the first nation to win the Webb Ellis Trophy three times, these All Blacks deserve to be rated the best ever.
All made magnificent contributions. But firstly this was a TEAM performance under the guiding hand of chief coach Steve Hansen and cohorts Wayne Smith, Ian Foster, Mick Byrne and Mick Cron. Hansen’s loyalty to ageing veterans Richie McCaw (34), Carter (33), Ma’a Nonu (33), Conrad Smith (33), Jerome Kaino (32), Keven Mealamu (36) and Tony Woodcock (34) was repaid in full in what for all, with the possible exception of the captain, was their last campaign in the All Black jersey. With McCaw leading the forward charge with a herculean effort, Kaino making bonecrunching tackles and Kieran Read superb at the lineouts, the All Blacks loosies overcame the challenge of highly rated Wallabies Michael Hooper, Scott Fardy and David Pocock. Hard working locks Sam Whitelock and Brodie Rettallick and front rowers Dan Coles, Owen Franks, Joe Moody,
SONNY BILL WILLIAMS
Keven Mealamu and Charlie Faumuina reserved their best for the playoffs. With halfback Aaron Smith providing a fast and accurate service, Carter was the master tactician, ensuing his team won the territorial battle with astute kicks, tackling superbly and feeding the rampant Nonu with well-timed passes. Conrad Smith, as always, was a smart, unselfish centre and fullback Ben Smith and wings Julian Savea and Milner-Skudder were lethal attackers.
Coming off the bench, brilliant offloader Sonny Bill Williams, speedy Beauden Barrett and Tawera Kerr-Barlow emphasised the team’s incredible depth. Williams’ generous gifting of his winner’s medal to a boy who had been harshly tackled on the field by an over-zealous security guard was a nice touch, especially when he didn’t know the tournament officials would give him another. At 30, Williams would seem the obvious replacement for the mighty France-bound Nonu if he is available after his Rio Olympic
Sevens quest. If not, then it could be an interesting battle between Ryan Crotty, Richard Buckman, George Moala and the gifted Canterbury newcomer, Rob Thompson, who has signed for the Highlanders. Malakai Fekitoa looks to be the likely replacement for Conrad Smith at centre. With Barrett, Aaron Cruden and Lima Sopoaga eager to fill Carter’s berth, the country isn’t short of talented first-fives. With coach Hansen stating he’s likely to retire after the 2017 British and Irish Lions tour, it will be interesting to see whether McCaw does likewise. If not, Sam Cane, Matt Todd and Ardie Savea will be eager to fill the breach. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author.
