hen you look at the 11 candidates who have been elected to represent the Howick Local Board area for the next three years, what do you see? Familiar faces and names, people who have spent a lot of time serving and leading our communities, candidates passionate about the area we live in. All of those answers are true but when I opened my laptop on Saturday afternoon and looked at the local election results, I saw 10 white Europeans. I saw three candidates who have been elected for a second term (six years) and seven who have been elected for a third (nine

years). I saw a few career politicians who have been representing the people of this area for even longer than that, from before the Super City amalgamation in 2010. But what I didn’t, and don’t, see in those 11 candidates is the changing communities of Botany, Howick and Pakuranga. This is despite a major increase in candidate competition and variety in 2016. Howick was the third mostcontested ward in Auckland this year, the Botany and Howick subdivisions were two of the top 10 most-contested local board seats, and Pakuranga was not far behind. Yet we have only one new face this term and he is the only non-

European representing our area. According to the 2013 Census, 55 per cent of the usually resident population in the Howick Local Board area identify as European. But what about the rest? What about the 38.8 per cent who identify with an Asian ethnic identity? Or the 5.2 per cent who identify as Maori? Or the 4.6 per cent Pacific peoples? These census figures show there are also people who identify with more than one ethnicity, and I haven’t even mentioned those who identify as Middle Eastern, African or Latin American. And remember, that data was collated three years ago. Those ethnic percentages (which equates to tens of thousands of

CLEAR BRACES

non-Europeans) are bound to be bigger next census. There were at least eight nonEuropean candidates standing for the Howick Local Board and the Howick Ward in 2016. One got in. Is that a reflection of the residents who live here? Think of your neighbours, the people you see at the supermarket, the kids your children go to school with. Whether you like it or not – and I realise a lot of people in this area don’t – Auckland is changing. Botany, Howick and Pakuranga are changing too. Actually, they already have. Our local leaders should be able to understand and relate to the changing population ➤ Turn to Page 3 they represent.

haron Stewart and Dick Quax – both Independents - have won back their seats on council for the Howick Ward in the local body elections. And they will share the council chamber with new mayor Phil Goff (Independent, 186,445 votes received) who easily romped home ahead of nearest rival Vic Crone (Independent, 110,926). Perhaps more surprising was third placegetter Chloe Swarbrick easily claiming third greatest number of votes in Auckland (28,545) ahead of John Palino (22,280). Mrs Stewart was comfortably returned (17,839) followed by Mr Quax (15,446). Collectively, they picked more votes than the other ward candidates combined. Looking at the Howick Local Board, there was just one change amongst the nine seats split over three subdivisions. In the Howick subdivision John Spiller (Vision & Voice, 6176), Adele White (Vision & Voice, 6168) and Mrs Stewart (5939) got in however Mrs Stewart will have to drop this role as she is a full-time councillor again. Fourth-placed Jim Donald (Ratepayers and Residents, 4748) takes the seat and gets back in. In the Botany subdivision, Peter

Young is the only new face on the Howick Local Board and clocked up the highest number of votes there (Vision & Voice, 4991) and will join a pair who were returned – Lucy Schwaner (Vision & Voice, 4852) and Bob Wichman (Vision & Voice, 4824). In the Pakuranga subdivision, Vision & Voice dominated again with a one-two-three. Katrina Bungard (5906) and David Collings (5665) are returned in the seat and Garry Boles (4534) takes the third seat, formerly held by Steve Udy who retired. Mr Boles was previously seated in the Botany subdivision. “I’m really pleased the community got behind me. I really appreciate it,” Mrs Stewart said. She also revealed just how nervous she was with the strong selection of candidates, which prompted her to run for both council and the Howick Local Board. “When I saw Bruce Kendall, [the other being colleague Dick Quax], I thought, ‘Gosh, another Olympian,” she said. “I wanted to serve the community that I love. “I’m delighted and looking forward to serving the community.” The celebrations tonight will be special, she said. “I’ve told everybody that if I don’t get in, there’s going to be a lot of food to take to the City Mission.”

Mr Quax, who is delighted to have been re-elected - won’t be sitting on his laurels. “I feel very excited and humbled by the support that I have received from the Howick Ward,” he told the Times. “I have a number of priorities as far as governance is concerned.” He and Stewart work as regional governors and so also have broader concerns although the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) is high on the list of priorities. “The continuation of that and working closely with Auckland Transport to ensure that the infrastructure that’s going to have to cope with the intensity of houses.” How you voted

As to the unitary plan – the city’s blueprint - he is “very concerned” with density up Pakuranga Road. “Region-wise, (it’s important) continuing the work from the Manukau City days, making sure we have an adequate supply of land for affordable housing.” The issue of whether the Auckland port should be moved is another unresolved matter. “Infrastructure financing is another thing of interest to me,” he said. “Over the past few years we’ve disregarded new ways of financing – bonds rather than rates or development contributions.”

This result doesn’t reflect our community at all ➤ From Page 1

The Howick Local Board area is not 91 per cent solely European. Not even close. So why are 10/11 of our representatives of predominately, if not total, European heritage? And that’s not new. Last term 11/11 were European and the term before that it was 10/11. Our leaders have stayed the same for six, nine or even more years, while the communities they represent have changed. So what, you might say. Keep

race out of politics. The people who have been elected are the most qualified candidates for the job. Well, that’s wrong too. Most of the non-European candidates who ran this year are just as qualified, if not more, to be on the Howick Local Board or represent the Howick Ward on the Auckland Council. Many of them have lived here for more than 10 or 20 years – some longer than that. They know this area and its people well. They have successful careers, kids in local schools

and plenty of leadership experience. They are equally as passionate about our communities. So, if we are keeping race out of politics, why weren’t they voted in? One answer lies with the people who vote or, rather, those who don’t. Preliminary results show voter turnout was less than 43 per cent in all three Howick Local Board subdivisions this year. That’s a lot of people who didn’t vote. Over the next three years, we need to fully engage these non-voters in the

funding; whether the port should stay; give local boards greater power and ability to fund more local initiatives, perhaps through targeted rates.”

sure the residents and ratepayers are getting value for their rates money – as well as the building of Ormiston Library, the town centre, swimming pool and the ongoing development of Barry Curtis Park.” Lucy Schwaner: “With good Local Board leadership we will be a united Board that is proactive in engaging the Mayor, our local councillors, community organisations and ratepayers in Howick.” Bob Wichman: “The newly elected Howick Local Board has the proven experience to provide an even stronger representation for our community.”

local political process because – according to research conducted by Auckland Council before, during and after the 2013 local election – they are most-likely the same people who are not being represented. Individuals aged between 18-24, members of Asian and Indian ethnic groups, and those who have been in Auckland for less than a year are the people described in the 2013 Auckland Council report as being less likely to vote in the Auckland local elections. Those more likely to vote

were described as being 55 and older, male, European, and those who have been Auckland residents for 10 years or more. Other local and national studies before and after have found similar demographic results – non-Europeans, new residents and young people are less likely to vote. Naturally, people vote for candidates they can relate to, people they know and are comfortable with. So if older Europeans who have lived in this area for more than 10 years are the ones most likely voting, then of course our elected representatives are going to mirror those demographics. We have until 2019 to change that and what better way to start than by engaging young and nonEuropean residents who are eligible to vote, as well as those who have recently moved into our area and are here to stay. They also deserve to have local leaders they can relate to. Email scott@times.co.nz

High quality, farm fresh produce at Fig and Plum I

t was an emotional moment for Clay Pryce and his dad Stuart Pryce when the doors to Fig and Plum, prominently located at the crossroads of Vincent and Wellington Streets, opened last week. Seeing a steady stream of people walk into their brand new fruit, vegetable and fine food store was a dream come true after six months of hard work, plenty of research and sleepless nights that went into translating their dream into reality. “Our business model is based on quality produce and personalised customer service,” says Stuart who has been a grower and exporter of fresh produce in Hawke’s Bay. “Our three children have grown up in the fruit capital, familiar with orchards, they know what fresh produce is all about.” Stuart and Cheryl moved from Havelock North, Hawkes Bay, to be nearer their children, Jesse, Clay and Gracie. Their grandchildren, Aria and Ollie, are regular visitors to Fig and Plum. The family owned business is run by Stuart and Clay, along with their partners Cheryl and Angelique. Clay stresses the fact that quality is of utmost importance to them. “We have over 500 items in here and everything is hand selected. There have been many

long hours spent sourcing directly from the growers and hand-picking produce of the highest standard to ensure that the customers get the best,” he says. An array of organic milk, artisan roast coffee and dry products (some organic) and free range eggs are on offer along side freshly sourced fruits, vegetables and flowers grown locally. Unlike the impersonal shopping experience in a supermar-

ket, customers are personally greeted. They are keen to go the extra mile to better the shopping experience. “We are here to give people what they want,” says Clay of the family owned and operated shop. While the name of the shop Fig and Plum was conceived by mum Cheryl, everything else you see in this shop from the shelves to the painting, is done by us, says Clay

with pride. As a way of showing appreciation, Fig and Plum is offering a free coffee voucher to customers who spend over $40. “We are giving our customers a card for a free coffee at the Apothecary cafe in Howick, which again is a family owned business. “We may even work with our local butcher at some stage to create a sense of local community,”

says Stuart who has a strong community sensibility. And going by the rave reviews on social media that have been circulating in the short time that Fig and Plum has opened, it looks like the community has embraced the boutique fruit and vegetable shop to its fold. entrepreneurial focus to build the business and increase customer satisfaction. “We wanted to move to Pakuranga for the schooling and to provide good education for our daughter Sangita and son Prajay,” Mr Patel says. Sangita has lived in San Fransisco, USA for the last 16 years. Meanwhile the move paid off with the Patel’s son Prajay last year giving up a successful banking career in New Zealand and Australia to return to manage the business. It freed Mr and Mrs Patel to live a normal life. But it hasn’t stopped their daily routine of coming into the store to oversee the later hours of the day. “When we made 25 years I asked myself, will I make 30,” Mr Patel says. “I did. But working seven days, it’s tough.” Since the Patels bought the store it’s been extended in size twice and now provides its customers with a wide variety of services, to an extended fresh produce and flowers range; a postal agency; fax, printing and copying services; Lotto sales; delicatessen goods, beer and wine, seasonal goods and an increased range of grocery.

arly this month (Friday October 1) Kanti (Ken) and Manjula (Mandy), members of their family, friends, Foodstuffs North Island executives, along with past and present members of staff and a cluster of loyal customers, celebrated 30 successful years at the Patel’s Four Square supermarket in Pakuranga. The occasion was recognised at the top of the Foodstuffs organisation with North Island CEO Chris Quin in attendance at the store on the corner of Reeves Road and Gossamer Drive. Mr Quin shared some kind words about the huge commitment and passion the Patels have for their community and the importance of the Four Square Group to the country. Also special to the Patel family was the attendance of one of their most loyal staff of 22 years, Norma Pateman, now retired. “It was a customer celebration gathering,” Mr Patel says. “We were so happy to see Norma here and so many of our customers. The Eastern Suburbs is home to this businessman and his children who have helped run the store from a

Many customers have commented that the store is part of their daily lives and treasured memories. Mr and Mrs Patel say they appreciate the hard work and dedication the team delivers on a daily basis. “People are at the core and customer service is paramount to us,” they say. Mr Patel came to

Obtaining his NZCE(Civil) qualification at Manukau Technical Institute (MIT), he was destined for a career as a civil engineer when some friends, already established in the grocery trade, encouraged him to pursue the rewards that running his own business would offer. When the decision was made to move into the grocery business, the Patel’s found the long-established Pakuranga Heights store. Mr and Mrs Patel set to work extremely long hours with an

It’s a classic case of mistaken identity and one that locally-owned business Online Carpet is desperate to clear up. A few weeks ago popular consumer affairs show Fair Go ran a story about a business named Carpet Online – a story that was not a good look for that company. But the episode, which aired on September 26, has also led to people thinking Online Carpet – which is located at The Hub in Botany and is a completely different company – is the one allegedly at fault. After the show co-owners of the Botany-based business, Ryan Croawell and Cam Irvine, both received texts from clients saying they were “very disappointed”. Mr Croawell, 29, said other clients have approached him while he’s been out on jobs and people have mentioned it when they’ve come into the store, as well as over the phone. Mr Irvine, 32, said they don’t know how much business they are missing out on because of the mix-up. “There will be people we don’t hear from who don’t come in because of what they’ve heard.” The producer of Fair Go has apologised to the Online Carpet team and has supplied them with a letter to show people. “We have never aired a story about your company ‘Online Carpet’ – in fact we’ve never even received a complaint about you guys,” he wrote. Mr Croawell said they have worked really hard to keep a good reputation and this incident has started to damage that. Local word of mouth has always been important for them, he said.

“We should not have to go through this again,” Mrs Mackereth says. “But now here we are again asking exactly the same question of views of the Gulf and Rangitoto from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve.” She is urging people to write to members of parliament and Prime Minister John Key to press the issue. The HRRA is planning to contact Mr Goff directly. Howickians willing to support this urgent cause can make donations to “The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association” ASB Highland Park account number 12-30890123712-02. HRRA’s givealittle page is at www.Givealittle.co.nz and search Stockade Hill or https://explore.givealittle.co.nz/ search?q=Stockade+Hill. More information is online at www.facebook.com/groups/ howickratepayers. PETITION To emphasise the strength of opinion on the plan changes more signatures are needed for the HRRA’s petition which can be signed at www.Change.org and type in the “Search” button “Stockade” for it to come up for signing. Those who do not have access to a computer can sign the petition at the Howick Information Centre, Spillers Hammer Hardware, Silks Jewellers, Michael’s Emporium, Unichem Picton Street, and the Salvation Army Shop.

businesses. Only 60 more signatures are needed to get 2000 online responses. Along with the petition the HRRA is asking for public donations to help cover the costs of lodging an appeal in the Environment and High Courts against Auckland Council. Its proposed plan changes would allow multiple 13-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Parkhill Roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill. HRRA has been told it could cost up to $60,000 to take the appeal the whole way, says Gayleen Mackereth who chairs the HRRA. This week $8480 had been raised, including $2273 donated on a givealittle page. “HRRA needs much more money to fight the battle in the courts,” Mrs Mackereth says. “Barristers are very expensive. We know Howickians are passionate about this issue, but we need everyone to spare us what they can. “We have recently been contacted by an overseas professor who, some time ago, wrote a paper as a visiting fellow of Auckland University,” she says. The title was ‘What is the Value of Rangitoto?’ in which the professor and a fellow author provided a robust case for conserving the view of Rangitoto from development, particularly high rise developments.

Do not knock please SOLUTIONS, with the Citizens Advice Bureau

WOFs @ $30 FULL SERVICE FROM $120 • Exhausts • Brakes

Everyone has an implied right to enter your property and knock on your door touting goods for sale, offering to trim your trees, paint your roof and other services which you may not require. In fact, you may prefer to get the work, if necessary, done by a more reputable source. A number of these door knockers are insistent and pushy people and their sales pitch may last a long time before you can get them to leave. In the worst-case scenario, you may agree to accept either the goods or services they are offering or selling just to get rid of them. One of the ways to deter them from even knocking is to put up a ‘do not knock’ sticker on either the front door or a gate leading into your property. If they ignore this sticker, which can be picked up from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), they are likely to be trespassing. If so, you can give them a verbal warning as there is no

legal requirement to give them a trespass notice in writing and then inform them that you will call the police if they do not go. Consumer NZ says everybody has an implied licence to enter your property and knock on your door. But you have the right to take away this licence. You can revoke a salesperson’s licence to enter your property by displaying a ‘Do Not Knock’ sticker. If a doorto-door seller ignores the sticker, they’re likely to be trespassing. CAB Pakuranga advises people to be aware that some door-to-door sellers use the ruse of telephone marketing to try to persuade you to make an appointment so you can inspect the product they are selling. Often they will use the lure of a free gift or by merely having a glib tongue. You have the right to refuse. However, if you do buy goods or services and the value is more than $100 you have the right to cancel the deal for any

reason. The seller must tell you so verbally and in writing. You can then cancel the goods or services within five working days of receiving the written agreement. Establish a paper trail recording details, noting the dates of the visits and the transactions. CAB has a team of volunteers who can provide further clarification on door-knocking and other things which may be causing concern . Call in and collect your ‘Do Not Knock’ sticker. ■■ Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, rear food court entrance, Botany Town Centre, phone 271-5382 or 0800-267-222 for free, confidential and informative help.

Howick College has always taken a strong stand against bullying. The ‘Big Stand’ which is a yearly event in the school calendar is a clear reminder for students to stand up for those who are being bullied. It’s not ok to be singled out and ridiculed is the message repeatedly hammered out. The college recently launched an anonymous reporting initiative called YourVoice. It is part of our ‘Big Stand’ approach to eliminating bullying and anti-social behaviour from the community.

Iva Ropati

“I continue to be impressed with our students’ desire that no child suffer from bullying and their commitment to that end,”

says principal Iva Ropati in the school newsletter. “The students were asked last year how we could make it easier and safer for students who observe bullying to report the behaviour. “Out of that discussion a new system of anonymous on-line reporting was born. Students can now safely, anytime, anywhere report without any fear of possible reprisals. “By strengthening our resolve we continue to make a huge impact not just within our school but community wide.”

Changes to dog rules By Marianne Kelly

C

hanges to dog access rules in the Howick Ward are mainly the result of the need to protect birdlife and ecologically sensitive salt marsh and intertidal bird habitats along the ward’s coastline. There are few other changes in the main recreational dogwalking areas. The Howick Local Board’s decisions are the result of recent hearings on proposed changes. They were reported to the governing body on September 29 to make amendments to the Auckland Council Policy on Dogs 2012 and the Auckland Council Dog Management Bylaw 2012. Dogs are already prohibited on foreshores including Wakaaranga Creek to Bramley Drive, Tiraumea Drive Reserve, Mangemangeroa Reserve and Pohutukawa Avenue Esplanade to The Sandspit because of the risk dogs present to wildlife in significant ecological areas and wetland habitats for birds. Five more foreshores have been added – Bramley Drive to Lagoon Drive (Pakuranga Road), Dayspring Way to Pandora Place, Mattson Road Esplanade Reserve to Freemantle Place, Freemantle Place to Ennis Avenue Reserve and Elm Park, Frank Nobilo to Burswood Esplanade, and Chisbury Terrace Reserve on the Mangemangeroa Creek. Contrary to speculation, the board has not made any changes to access on the Pakuranga Rotary Walkway. Dogs will continue to be allowed on a leash on the walkway reserve to Bramley Drive Reserve and the esplanade reserves and parks from Bramley to Lagoon Drives. They continue to be allowed on a leash in the Mangeman-

geroa Reserve (including bush walks), the esplanade and reserves along Pohutukawa Avenue Esplanade Reserve to The Sandspit, and the Musick Point Esplanade Reserve next to the golf course. To protect wildlife, the Chisbury Terrace Reserve is now restricted to under control on a leash. Tainui Reserve, adjacent to the northern end of Cockle Bay is also an on leash area because it contains a wellused playground. The board says as a thoroughfare, dogs should be able to access the area under control on a leash. Dog owners continue to be allowed to run their dogs off leash at the Wakaaranga Creek Reserve, esplanade and parks from Dayspring Way to Pandora Place Esplanades (including Millen Avenue Esplanade), the Tiraumea Drive Reserve, the esplanade and reserves from Freemantle Place, Stonedon Reserve to Ennis Avenue Reserve, and the Frank Nobilo to Burswood Esplanade. The board says no wildlife or public safety and comfort concerns are raised in these areas. For the same reason, the board has added the Musick

Point Esplanade Reserve foreshore area to the off-leash areas. A combination of on and off leash rules for Murphy’s Bush and Point View Reserve have been retained with open grass areas allowing for off leash and bush areas and bush walks restricted to on a leash. The time and season rule for the main beaches has been changed to before 10am on summer mornings, core summer hours 10am-7pm and summer evenings after 7pm. The summer season will start and finish with daylight saving changes. Winter mornings, winter core hours and winter evenings will be off leash. Rules for Eastern Beach north of the northernmost water pipe and Mellons Bay Beach west of the water pipe remain off leash areas with no identified wildlife concerns. Dogs are also allowed under control off a leash at any time at the beach and foreshore northwest of the Howick Beach boat ramp, including when they are prohibited on the rest of the beach in summer. However the board has made changes to identify the high use beach areas subject to the time and season rule from adjacent areas where dogs will be allowed under control on a leash. These include Cockle Bay’s adjoining reserves in the north and south; areas adjacent to Howick Beach including Howick Beach Reserve, the Eastern Beach caravan park adjacent to Macleans Park and the Warren Boardwalk on the southern end of Little Bucklands Beach. Another 100 parks and reserves are designated for dogs allowed under control off a leash. Dog access is also subject to Auckland Council’s regionwide rules.

Springtime brings on magpie patrols By Marianne Kelly

T

Serving lunch from 12pm every day. For details visit lonestar.co.nz

LOCATION 588 Chapel Road, Botany Town Centre, (next to Hoyts Cinema) Auckland. KC11960

he spring nesting season habit of magpie swooping has hit Howick Domain over the past few weeks and four-year-old William Gray has the lacerations to prove it. William and his mother Gemma are among the regulars at the domain playground on the corner of Moore and Howe Streets. They’ve noticed the aggressive behaviour of the magpies. But when William moved onto the grassed area one magpie swooped in resulting in lacerations close to his eye. He’s fine and the scratches will heal,” Mrs Gray says. “But it’s as if the birds have claimed the entire Howick Domain with their patrolling. They are terrorizing young families. “It’s a shame because we live in a townhouse and for my kids this is like their back yard.” The Times<ital> arranged to meet Mrs Gray and William at the Domain and within minutes of William setting off to the play area he was again swooped on. It gives credence to the advice not to be surprised if a bird comes back for another attack. Australian magpies have an incredible memory and will attack the same people again and again. At the same time three-

year-old Patrick Saunders was dive-bombed by a bird as he ventured onto the Domain’s playing fields. Auckland Council has erected a temporary sign saying: “Please be aware of aggressive magpies. Magpies nesting in the area during breeding season.” Malcolm Harrison, the council’s senior regional biosecurity advisor – animals, says magpies are a well-established bird within New Zealand’s natural environment. “As many of our parks have trees that magpies find suitable for nesting in, we often encounter problems when the birds become territorial during the spring breeding season,” he says. “The common behaviour of these birds to swoop on or dive bomb unsuspecting targets can be disconcerting for the public who use

our parks at this time.” Unfortunately, he says, there are no easy solutions to removing the problem. “The birds are intelligent and thereby notoriously difficult to trap, leaving the only effective means of control being to shoot the birds which is not an appropriate activity to conduct in a central city park. “There are also ethical considerations about how appropriate it is to control the birds for exhibiting natural behaviour.” For these reasons he says the council advises that members of the public remain conscious of their environment when in the parks and, if significantly concerned with the magpies, carry an umbrella or other means of providing protection to the head area. “Wearing a hat will greatly deter dive bombing behaviour.” Mapie breeding season, Mr Harrison says, starts in late July and most birds have nested by late August. Chicks fledge at about four-five weeks at which time the adult magpies will stop defending (and dive bombing) their territory as aggressively. Some magpies can breed as late as December, but this is by far the minority, he says.

Joe takes on the world at oyster fair The Times spoke to Joe Kalasimi when he won a dream trip to participate at the 62nd World Oyster Opening Championship in Galway. Now that he is back with a trophy, here’s another pearler of a yarn By Farida Master

C

lutching a special oyster knife, Joe Kalasimi couldn’t believe he was competing at the world stage as international champions fiercely battled for the title of World Oyster Opening Championship at the 62nd annual Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival in Ireland. A little nervous to be in the midst of skilled oyster shucking champions, the simple Samoan,

an employee of Clevedon Coast Oysters, realised he was not used to working with Bluff oysters. Joe who has just returned from an all-expenses-paid trip to the Japan Oyster Opening Championships followed by a trip to compete at the world’s biggest oyster event in Ireland says: “This was my first time at the world championship and the oysters were very different. We work with Pacific oysters at Clevedon Coast Oysters. Bluff oysters have

harder shells, are flat and are very different to open. But we had very good oyster shucking knives with a curved spoon attached at the other end of it. That helped.” The competitors at the championship were not only judged on speed but also on technique and presentation with penalty points for flesh cutting or blood spill. FOR LIFE

The Dussehra festival celebrates the Hindu god Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana and the triumph of good over evil. According to Ramayana, an epic of ancient India, Lord Rama won over the lovely Sita for his wife, only to have her kidnapped by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. Dussehra is the culmination of the nine-day Navaratri festival. Maa Shakti Charitable Trust of Maa Durga Temple is celebrating Dussehra on October 15 at Barry Curtis Park, Flat Bush, from 2pm-8.30pm. Apart from a host of cultural activities there will be Ram Leela— a children’s play recreating the significance of the festival. There will be plenty of food stalls, fun rides for kids with a bouncy castle, and the burning of the effigy of Ravana, the mythological evil king who was defeated by the righteous king Rama on Dussehra. Devotional songs followed by the fun garba/dandiya dance and a display of fireworks, makes it an event worth attending.

Let’s get walking Make your Walking Stars a healthy one

Every year, Walking Stars’ 21 kilometre half marathon gets bigger and better and 2016 is no exception. To ensure participants are Walking Stars-ready, renowned nutritionist Claire Turnbull will be joining Cancer Society online to give her tips to a healthy walk. Claire will share nutrition tips and tools to getting half marathon ready – from what you should eat before the walk, the best snacks to take on the walk and the key foods for ligament and muscle support post-walk. The Walking Stars webinar will be posted on the Walking Stars Facebook page.

About Walking Stars Walking Stars is New Zealand’s original nighttime walking half marathon, bringing people together to light up Auckland’s vibrant CBD. Starting early evening, the walk takes you on a starlit tour of Auckland’s finest landmarks whilst raising vital funds for cancer research and care services. With more than one in three New Zealanders being diagnosed with cancer-related conditions in their lifetime, Walking Stars is a great way to make a difference for people facing a cancer diagnosis and to celebrate the lives of those who have been affected by cancer. The money raised through Walking Stars will go towards breakthrough lifesaving research and offers a helping hand to cancer patients and their families at a time in their lives, when they need it most. You can choose to power walk, stride or stroll, but no running! ■■ Walking Stars - Saturday, November 26 from 8pm. Support this week’s Pink Ribbon Appeal The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation is asking Kiwis everywhere to support its Pink Ribbon Appeal this Friday and Saturday. Collectors will be shaking their pink buckets on the streets and at shopping centres around the country, aiming to raise funds for research into new targeted treatments, medical equipment for our hospitals, life-saving awareness and education programmes, and support for women going through breast cancer. “We have thousands of volunteers who have generously committed

their time to this week’s appeal,” says NZBCF chief executive Van Henderson. “Now we need Kiwis everywhere to drop a coin in the bucket – your gift helps us work towards our long term vision of zero deaths from breast cancer.” With breast cancer the most common cancer for New Zealand women – eight women a day are diagnosed, and one in nine women will be diagnosed in their lifetime – almost everyone knows someone affected by the disease. Research shows that the earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the outcome, so the NZBCF

AWARENESS

The cold, hard facts Breast cancer affects one in nine Kiwi women over the course of their lifetime. Eight women, on average, will hear news today that they have breast cancer. Seventy per cent of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, and 80 per cent of women who die from it, are aged 50 years or older. While women over the age of 50 are most at risk, younger women get breast cancer too. Six per cent of breast cancers in New Zealand occur under the age of 30 years. Although it’s uncommon, men also get breast cancer. On average, 20 men are diagnosed in New Zealand every year. Around 3000 New Zealand women and 20 men are diagnosed every year. The risk of breast cancer increases as women age. Around 75 per cent of all cases occur in women over 50 years. Maori women have, on average, a 33 per cent higher incidence of breast cancer than non-Maori women. Maori and Pacific women are also at greater risk of dying of breast cancer than other NZ women. Over a 10 year average, Maori women have shown to have a 65.4 per cent higher mortality rate from breast cancer than non-Maori women. Pacific women in New Zealand are more likely to die of breast cancer than other non-Maori New Zealand women despite having a similar risk to other women of developing the disease. More than 600 New Zealand women die from breast cancer each

mammograms. “A mammogram can mean the difference between relief and despair,” says Mrs Henderson. “Women should consider annual mammograms from age 40, then have mammograms every two years from age 50. If you’re under 50, you need to be breast aware – know the normal look and feel of your breasts so you can report changes to your doctor.” ■■ Visit the Foundation’s www.anychanges.co.nz site for more information about signs of breast cancer and how to check your breasts.

year. Mortality rates have dropped by 27 per cent since 1994 - a function of greater breast health awareness, the introduction of the national screening programme for women 44-69 years and more cancers being found earlier enabling successful treatment. Regular mammograms find cancer early and save lives. The 10 year survival rate is 92 per cent if a breast cancer is found through a mammogram compared to 75 per cent if the cancer is detected by chance/ self examination because the cancer is generally more advanced when a symptom appears. The national screening rate is around 70 per cent of women aged 50-69 years and 64 per cent of Maori. Around 374,000 women have had a mammogram through Breast Screen Aotearoa in the two years to Oct 2014. As indicated in the following table, a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer increases with age. Approximately Seventy five per cent of breast cancers are diagnosed in women 50 years and older. While breast cancer is less common in women under the age of 40, women in their 20s and 30s can get it too (approximately 6 per cent of cases are in this age group). Recent research from Australia, and the United Kingdom shows a one in nine lifetime risk of a woman being diagnosed with breast cancer; however, the USA is showing a trend towards a higher incidence with a 1 in 8 to 1 in 7 lifetime risk. This isn’t fair

I find it curious that people who voted in the election for the mayor, council, wards etc were not necessarily NZ citizens. Why is it that non-NZ citizens can vote and possibly change the lives of NZ citizens as a result of their voting. Surely control of the local bodies of NZ should be in the hands of its citizens and not be able to be influenced by the citizens of other countries To me this seems to be just another example of how slack our governments are and have been in protecting the rights of its citizens. Arthur Moore Pakuranga Editor’s note: From www.elections.org.nz Who can vote in the local elections? Anyone who is correctly enrolled can vote in the local elections where they live. Also, voters who own property within a local council area, but who usually live outside this, can apply to go on the ratepayer roll. They will then be able to vote in the area where they pay rates, and the area where they live.

I can’t see that the Kardashian robbery has any newsworthiness to it. Why are we bombarded regularly with such trashy news about various self considered “stars”? Assault and bigamy

I was amused to read in the NZ Herald of October 4, the article about the Pakistani man who used a hammer on his wife. He made the statement: “If I did wrong I should be punished for it but not my whole family.” Using the word “if” in his statement, one can tell that he is not repentant, has not judged his own actions to be wrong and hurtful and does not think he deserves punishment. Whether a hammer is used or not, beating up your spouse is not acceptable – it is assault and deserves punishment. He does not want to be deported and wants to raise his children in NZ because opportunities would be greater here for them. Opportunities to watch their father beat up his wife/wives? With a model like that, they will be brought up thinking it’s all right to beat up your spouse. By the way, since when was NZ marital law changed to make it acceptable for a man to have more than one wife? And I’ve always thought that bigamy is against the law in NZ. Margaret Scott Pakuranga

The South Auckland branch of Forest & Bird (which also covers East Auckland) is hosting a climate change event at Hawkins Theatre in Papakura this Sunday, October 16. Last week New Zealand ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change. From a local standpoint, the main issue with climate change will be sea level rise. Some 10,000 homes are threatened by sea level rise, but the first homes to go will be those of coastal wildlife like dotterels in areas such as Firth of Thames. A unique fusion of both Chinese art— the oldest artistic tradition in the world—seamlessly blended with the western style of painting, makes his artworks a stand out. A resident of Pakuranga, the award-winning Asian artist who was born in Zhejiang Province of China will be showcasing his work at the Auckland Museum lobby, level 2 on October 15 at 2pm. The newly appointed Auckland Mayor Phil Goff along with Botany Member of Parliament Jami Lee Ross and Howick Local Board member David Collings will be there along with other community leaders, to honour the prolific 67-year-old artist showcasing 38 artworks. For the uninitiated, landscape painting is regarded as the highest form of Chinese painting. Artistic impression of views from a coastal farms on the 90 Mile Beach, alternated by a burst of vivid colours depicting the geothermal activity in Rotorua, treescapes in Panmure, Pancake rocks in Punakaiki, seagulls on the Kaikoura coast beach, make captivating artworks. Vice chairman of the New Zealand Chinese Painting Research Society as well as a council member of New Zealand Chinese Artists Association, and council member of New Zealand Artist Association, a number of museums in China have displayed his works of art. The artist who moved to New Zealand five years ago has converted his garage into a studio, and continues to paint day and night. Nine days of foottapping Garba dance A

s the countdown to Diwali, the biggest Hindu festival begins, the Indian community across the world celebrates the festival of Navratri (meaning nine nights in Sanskrit). Traditionally, the nine-day festival honours nine different forms of the Indian goddess Durga and is marked by special rituals and festivity. And then there is lots of dancing. Hundreds of brightlydressed men, women and children swirled in unison at the event organised by the Art Of

Living Foundation at the Howick Leisure Centre on Friday and Saturday. It was a sight to behold as everyone danced with fervour to the beat of the Indian drum called a dhol and to the tune of Bollywood songs. During the festival, Goddess Durga, the destroyer of all evil, is worshipped as celebrants energetically dance in concentric circles. Navratri not only symbolises the victory of good over evil but also celebrates the spirit of Indian culture in its

Let’s talk about All Blacks depth T

o give an example of the All Blacks rugby depth, only Ben Smith among the seven All Black backs who beat South Africa 57-15 in Durban on Sunday were starters in the 2015 World Cup final triumph against Australia. The missing stars were Aaron Smith, Daniel Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Julian Savea and Nehe Milner-Skudder. Replacements TJ Perenara, Beauden Barrett, Ryan Crotty, Anton Lienert-Brown, Waisake Naholo and Israel Dagg have been a revelation. Although Perenara doesn’t have Aaron Smith’s speed of pass he’s a feisty, dangerous attacking halfback and a vigorous defender. Barrett doesn’t possess Carter’s goal-kicking accuracy but he’s a lightning fast, freakish attacker whose tactical appreciation and all-round skills have sharpened remarkably. The biggest surprise, however, has been the outstanding midfield combination of Ryan Crotty and 21-year-old Lienert-Brown whose excellence has left SonnyBill Williams, Malakai Fekitoa, George Moala and Charlie Ngatai facing a difficult job challenging them. Nevertheless the unlucky Ngatai was the best midfield back in the Super Rugby championship before suffering a bad concussion that put paid to his test pros-

pects. And, at 31, SBW remains an amazing ball distributor. All are individually talented. But the question is whether they have the same chemistry that has made Crotty and Lienert-Brown such a revelation? Not only do they combine sweetly to set up tries for the back three, but they are outstanding tacklers who offer opponents few chances. With fullback Dagg returning to the international fold and demonstrating his versatility with good performances on the wing,

competition for places there will heat up when Milner-Skudder recovers from injury to join him, Naholo and Julian Savea for starting berths. As a champion fullback Ben Smith, at 30, is playing the best rugby of his career, combining brave defence with an exciting, daring attacking game. Much of the credit for the team’s success deservedly goes to Steve Hansen and his harmonious coaching staff. Add to that fellow selector, the astute Grant Fox, and it’s clear that they have

chosen and developed the best players the nation has to offer. Another factor is the consistency with which their reserves make an impact over the final quarter. In fact against the Boks, the team scored an amazing 28 of their 57 points within the final 10 minutes with four converted tries. Playing a big part in setting up two of them and scoring one himself was Liam Squire who demonstrated the same earthshattering dynamism we have come to expect from Ardie Savea.

In realising the attacking impact Squire could bring to the All Blacks, it didn’t bother Hansen that he lost his starting Highlanders No 8 jersey to workaholic Luke Whitelock. Meanwhile, the forwards have also played their part in dominating the set pieces and developing their passing skills. Kieran Read has led the team well with plenty of support up front from Dane Coles, Brodie Retallick, Sam Whitelock, Jerome Kaino and Sam Cane before he was sidelined because of injury. Although it has been a convincing unbeaten run for this team in the Rugby Championship, the demise of Australia and South Africa has been hugely disappointing in failing to provide meaningful opposition. While the All Blacks did beat the Wallabies 34-17 in last year’s World Cup final, they battled hard to overcome the Boks 20-18. How quickly times have changed.
