local who has seen what she believes to be multiple cases of animal cruelty is concerned about the welfare of a chained dog in Half Moon Bay. Bucklands Beach woman Christine Duncan passes by a black Labrador tethered to a tree on her regular walks each week. “I’ve seen that dog since it was a puppy and it’s been months and months, could even be a year now.” Mrs Duncan says it’s particularly bad when there’s rain. “It’s on mud so in this weather,
it’s all wet and filthy.” She says next to the dog there is a kennel that has fallen over and is far from weather tight. “It’s really gruesome. This should not be happening in this day and age.” Mrs Duncan says the Chained Dog Awareness group and the SPCA are aware of the canine’s plight but the owners were not home when they visited. To her knowledge, the Chained Dog Awareness group has visited twice, and the SPCA has visited four times as a result of reports from other people. “[But] the dog is still there in
exactly the same conditions.” She says the SPCA felt its “body condition was good”. Mrs Duncan says she has twice witnessed people trying to drown dogs at Bucklands Beach and has reported the incidents to the SPCA but is not confident anything has been done. “Nobody follows up. They’ve lost the number, lost the job or the inspectors are not available. It just makes you wonder.” SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen says Mrs Duncan’s experience was unusual for abuse of that nature, and her allegations will be investigated.
Times photo Natalie Brittan
She admitted managing the complaints can be a challenge but jobs were prioritised. “We only have six inspectors that cover from Wellsford to Port Waikato so they have a huge area to cover.” When the Times visited the Half Moon Bay property in question, the dog was chained but looked healthy. A neighbour, who did not want to be named, says she couldn’t be sure, but the pet looked loved. “We have no concerns whatsoever. The dog is walked every single day and its owners are lovely people.”
Shellfish poachers lay low After last year’s highs, it seems shellfish poachers from the eastern beaches are starting to get the message. Latest statistics show 35 infringements were issued at Cockle Bay, 32 at Eastern Beach, six in Duders (Umupuia) Beach, Maraetai and 68 at Kawakawa Bay. While there are three more months left until the end of the year, the figures will have a lot of catching up to do if compared to the total 110 infringements at Cockle Bay and 147 at Kawakawa Bay last
year. That same year, a woman and her mother were caught with 1100 cockles and nearly 1000 oysters at Cockle Bay. The woman was prosecuted this year resulting in the forfeiture of her luxury Audi car. The official cockle gathering season at Cockle Bay is now over, closing from October 1 and reopening on May 1. Honorary fisheries officer Barry Wood says the ban seems to be working so far. “It’s been really good going
from 200 plus on the last day [of the cockle collecting season] to two [infringements] on the first day of closure. It’s just like turning the tap off.” He says now that the well sign-posted ban has been enforced for six years it seems people are getting the message. However, there may still be those who will push their luck, Mr Wood says. “There will be more probably at long weekends when people from South Auckland come up. The
temptation for them is just a little bit great.” The Asian community which makes up the majority of collectors is now well aware of the rules, he says. All shellfish gathering is banned at Eastern Beach and a two-year closure was enforced at Duders on October 26 last year. The Ministry of Primary Industries has a list of fishing rules on its website www.mpi. govt.nz and people can also download an NZ Fishing Rules app on their smartphone.

onsidering Justin Bieber had just hit town, it’s not surprising that a budding young singer had “pop star” in his mind when asked what his musical career ambitions were. But nine-year-old Elliott Fox has already carved out a niche, having just finished a five-day season in the Freemasons NZ Opera Chorus for the spectacular production of Tosca at Auckland’s Aotea Centre. So it’s also not surprising that a Broadway musical may also be in his sights. “Mum says I have been singing since I was a baby,” he says. Mum, Carly, agrees, saying “he came out singing and has been singing for as long as I can remember”. The Pigeon Mountain Primary School pupil has a string of vocal achievements behind him. He was a student at Aimee Gray’s music school until she recently returned to London to complete her MA Practice of Voice and Singing. Agents lodge complaint against Times Harcourts has complained that an article published in the Times on September 24 with the headline “Going up: $120,000 in 3 months” called into question the professional ethics and performance of Harcourts Howick agent Anton Huang and was racially discriminatory. The Times disagrees with Harcourts’ reading of the article. It was not intended to make any allegations about – or cast any aspersions upon – the character or performance of any of the parties involved in the property transactions, including Mr Huang. As

far as the Times is aware, these are unblemished. Nor was it the Times’ intention to cause offence to the Chinese community, which forms an important part of New Zealand society and the valued readership, and staff, of this newspaper. In fact, the author of the story is MalaysianChinese. The views expressed in the article that are the subject of Harcourts’ complaint are the opinions of a third party rather than of the Times. The Times published them on the basis that they form part of a wider and very
topical ongoing national conversation about the terms upon which offshore investors should be permitted to purchase property in New Zealand. Feedback from our readers suggests that this is an issue of interest to them. In the interests of balance, Mr Huang and the owner of Harcourts Howick-Pakuranga, David Clifton, were contacted for comment before the piece was published but declined to do so in any detail. Harcourts has subsequently taken issue with the fact that the Times did not contact its
CEO, Hayden Duncan, for further comment, after the author of the article was informed by Mr Clifton that Mr Duncan would love to talk about the issue of overseas buyers. The Times remains committed to fair and balanced reporting of issues of relevance and interest to all members of our community. We aim to provide articles that stimulate debate and discussion, and thank Harcourts for bringing to our attention its view that the intention and purpose of this particular article could be misconstrued.

Old bridge’s 150th birthday An important local structure is being given the celebration it deserves this Sunday after 150 years of service. The Tamaki River Bridge, or more commonly known as the Panmure Bridge, was officially opened to the public on October 20, 1865, to ease the congested ferry service along the Tamaki River. The first major swing span bridge in the North Island and longest surviving structure of its kind, the overpass was built by Australian contractors McNeil and Wilson at a cost of about £15,000 pounds. Its primary function was to link the two villages of Howick and Panmure. Toll charges were applied at a cost of two pennies each for pedestrians, pigs, sheep and goats, and up to two shillings for a cart drawn by two horses. While the timber portion of the bridge was demolished in 1916 and replaced by a new concrete bridge, the iron swing span remains today. In 2013, Auckland Council carried out preservation work at a cost of $100,000 and the bridge has heritage

status. Former Auckland Regional Council engineer John La Roche says the structure forms an important part of East Auckland’s history. “I think it’s very important that historic pieces of engineering are recognised. It was quite a major engineering feat for its time and needs to be preserved.” Mr La Roche says the type of material contributed to the bridge’s longevity. “The steel was wrought iron rather than mild steel, which is more corrosion-resistant and has enabled it to last 150 years in the marine environment.” To mark the bridge’s anniversary, Mr La Roche and his brother, Alan La
Roche, together with the Howick and Panmure Historical Societies, as well as the Institute of Professional Engineers (Auckland), have organised a public event. ■■ A celebration will be held on Sunday, October 18, at 12pm, outside Panmure Bridge Marine, 2 Pakuranga Road. Activities include guided tours and picture displays, an official welcome by Mayor Len Brown and addresses by Waitemata Ward councillor Mike Lee and Howick historian Alan La Roche. A book published by John and Alan La Roche called The 1865 Tamaki River Bridge Panmure will be on sale for $5. Parking is available at Kerswill Place or Millen Avenue.

ShakeOut a success
News bites
unnyhills School has got its ShakeOut drills sorted. Students at the primary school went through the motions yesterday with Howick Ward councillor Sharon Stewart, who is also the chair of Civil Defence for Auckland Council; executive director of the Chip-In Foundation Tom Morton and Howick Local Board deputy chair Adele White. Chip-In undertakes community-based projects raising awareness of the risks of natural disasters. A national ShakeOut earthquake drill was marked today at 9.15am. Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye says Monday night provided a timely reminder that New Zealand isn’t called the shaky isles for no reason, with a 5.8 magnitude quake just east of Pongaroa, Hawke’s Bay.
Motorists had to deal with back to school traffic this week with several crashes occurring on Monday. One person was taken to hospital with moderate injuries after a two-vehicle crash just after 8am on Reeves Road, Pakuranga resulting in a 40-minute road closure. Later at about 8.40am, a two-car crash blocked the busy intersection between Chapel Road and Maghera Drive in Botany.

“On average, we have around one earthquake every half hour in New Zealand, or 20,000 earthquakes a year. Around 250 of these are large and close enough to feel,” she says. More than 1.25 million people on Monday had signed up for ShakeOut, but many more are expected to participate today. ShakeOut is geared to getting every New Zealander to drop, cover and hold - the best thing to do during an earthquake to save lives and reduce the risk of injury. “While Thursday is a drill, we never know when we may have to drop, cover and hold for real. That’s why this drill is so important,” says Ms Kaye. “By making drop, cover and hold our instinctive reaction as soon as we feel shaking start, we can give ourselves a much greater chance of getting through an earthquake unscathed.”

It just adds another dimension to orchids” he says. Winning battle against crime Kiwis have the right to feel safe and secure
W
e were determined to drive down the escalating crime rate when we were elected as the Government seven years ago. New Zealanders deserve to feel safe and secure in their homes and suburbs. This has always been one of the great aspects in the Kiwi way of life – living in one of the safest countries in the world. We want to preserve this culture and reputation. Our strategy for reducing crime and victimisation is working, which has led to the lowest levels of reported crime in decades. Personal and household crime has reduced considerably by a third over five years, says the latest New Zealand Crime and Safety Survey (NZCASS), a comprehensive public victimisation report. It collects information on a variety of personal and household offences such as assaults, sexual assaults, threats and burglaries.
It also shows that threequarters of Kiwis did not experience any of those crimes compared to five years earlier. There has also been a drop in most of the offence categories, including the number of violent interpersonal offences and the number of people who experience them. The most encouraging result is that a majority of people believe that crime is not a problem in their neighbourhood, and that they feel safe walking in their local streets after dark. It shows that our approach is working: having a strong focus on crime prevention and reduction, better support of police and putting victims first. We must now continue to address the problem that some areas of our society experience disproportionate levels of crime. The number of adults appearing on charges in courts is at also its lowest level since records began in 1980/81, while there has been a considerable
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany
drop in the numbers of children and young people appearing in court since the peak eight years ago. The fewer people we have appearing in our criminal justice system, the better. Fewer people in court provide clear evidence of less crime on our streets and a less congested court system. It’s saving taxpayer money, improving the long-term outcomes of vulnerable Kiwis and keeping our communities safer and happier. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Prepare boat for summer N
othing says that summer is nearly here more than a long weekend on the water. With Labour Weekend just around the corner signally the start of the boating season, it’s the time for boaties to be checking their boat is ready and hasn’t suffered from the winter blues. Have you checked the trailer over? Lubricated where needed and got the registration and warrant of fitness sorted? The most common reason for Coastguard callouts at this time of the year are mechanical breakdowns – common issues are batteries and fuel. Batteries can be badly affected if they are ignored dur-
ing the cold damp months. Working on the basis that “if the motor starts at the ramp equals she’ll be right” has been the downfall of many. A professional check could be well worth the small amount of time required and allows you to check the connections at the same time. Fuel is another worthwhile check– is there enough of it? Also worth checking that it’s not stale or contaminated with water or a diesel bug. When was the last time your motor was serviced? What about the “Boaties Best Mate” – your Coastguard membership – have you got that sorted, is it current? For only $115
a year you enjoy peace of mind every time you head out on the water knowing Coastguard’s got your back. How are your lifejackets looking? We recommend that you service your Inflatable lifejackets annually, you can do this yourself in a few simple steps. Check to make sure you’ve got enough fit-for-purpose lifejackets on-board for everyone and that they’re in good condition. Don’t forget that communication is key out on the water, if we can’t hear you it makes it tricky to get there to help you. Test your VHF Marine Radio with a simple radio check to Coastguard Radio. To help you get the best out of
your boating and find out what you don’t know our popular Boating Education Courses are a great place to start. We recently had a student that accompanied his partner on a Day Skipper course. He wrote: “despite 30 years of boating, I was blown away by how much I learnt” this really says it all. For those ladies who would like a better understanding and to gain some confidence, our ladies only “Suddenly in Charge” seminar may just be the ticket. Three friendly lady tutors will run you through practical and useful presentations covering safety equipment, handling

emergencies and hands on rope skills. Our next one is scheduled for 7pm on Thursday 12 November at Orakei. ■■ Visit www.coastguard.org.nz or phone 0508 RESCUE.

Fresh spring catch with The Big Fish
ADVERTORIAL JH10439A
As the weather warms up, those looking at a sensational season on the water could well be in for a spectacular haul. Thanks to fresh products in-store at The Big Fish in Cascades Road, Pakuranga, fishers, kayakers, divers have everything they could possibly need for summer. New to the store, Paddling Perfection joins the kayak section with a quality range of sea kayaks and paddling equipment. It’s also a great opportunity to view some of New Zealand’s leading handmade composite kayaks – the SeaBear, Breaksea and Euro-X. Also on display are some new, fun thermoform plastic kayaks great for beginners – The ADVENTURER and easy to paddle fitness/fun kayak, S14 from Star Kayaks. Owner Kim White will be available most Saturday mornings to discuss kayak needs and offer advice. Test paddles are also on offer. What’s more, a wider range of entrylevel sit-on-top kayaks will be brought in to enable people to get on the water and enjoy the fun of kayaking or fishing at a competitive price. Started by Bucklands Beach resident Phil Appleyard nearly 20 years ago, The Big Fish has built up a solid reputation for a comprehensive range of top stock. It is also well-known for having a big

selection of bait on sale. “We are all mad keen on fishing here at The Big Fish and so the staff offer great practical knowledge,” says Kim. The Big Fish also has a fishing club, which was launched about the time it started and now has about 250 mem-
bers. The club, which meets monthly and also organises competitions and other events, is affiliated to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. New members are always welcomed along to share fishing information, know-how and possible stories about the “one that got away.”
Some very impressive fish specimens, which obviously didn’t get away, have been moulded into very impressive fibreglass moulds to decorate the shop. There’s also a photo-board with an impressive line-up of photographs of fishing success stories.
The fishing side of the shop covers a huge range of equipment – ranging from the New Zealand-made Predator fishing system through to a big selection of rods and reels. The Big Fish is a leading stockist for locally-made off-shore rods – ranging in price from about $150 through to about $700. It also stocks Ocean Kayaks, charts, buoyancy aids (lifejackets) and all other fishing requirements. Within the shop is another little shop which specialises in diving equipment. This section is run by Rebecca Ledingham and Dennis Hyde, who are both experienced divers and dive instructors. “We supply everything you could possibly need for snorkelling, diving or spear-fishing,” Rebecca says. “It’s a nice, friendly local business with a real variety of stock and good prices. Anything we don’t have, we can usually have it in store within a day if needed.” Fishing is becoming very familyoriented with many regular customers at The Big Fish now introducing their children to the pleasure of hours of fishing off their boats or wharves so call by for all your fishing needs and much more. Treasured valley under threat
Broomfields residents are worried about the proliferation of pests. MARIANNE KELLY takes a look at the problem in this first of a two-part series
R
eal estate agents call it “prestigious”, but residents on the scenic Broomfields Peninsula between Howick and Whitford are up against a problem that is anything but prestigious as hordes of possums, rats and even stoats are on the march destroying native foliage and bird life in their path. These animal pests, which can cover miles at night, are also taking their toll in the treasured Mangemangeroa Reserve, managed by the Friends of Mangemangeroa (FOM) in partnership with Auckland Council. And while FOM is in discussion with the council’s Local & Sports Park (South) about what their programme for pest control in the reserve entails, the issue spreads wider to surrounding private properties and some Broomfields Peninsula residents are worried. Jenny Foster, who is also the Howick town centre manager, lives in Whites Road and says neighbouring residents are reporting increased numbers of possums and now stoats.
“I have lived here for 11 years and saw a stoat at my back door for the first time a while ago. Now we have four feral cats on the property. “There are possums, rabbits, stoats and rats and pukekos are running rife,” she says. “We have lots of covenanted stands of native bush and the kereru and tui population is amazing. We’ve also got moreporks. But we are not seeing the same bird numbers over the last 12 months.” Neighbouring residents in Whites Road, Wayne Kidd and Don Pye say they have experienced pest problems on their properties since they settled there, 20 years for Mr Pye and 40 years for Mr Kidd. Mr Kidd has established a bait station at the bottom of his property which he sets with poison as soon as spring arrives and he sees that fruit trees have been attacked. “I have phoned the council saying the possums are coming from the reserve.” Mr Pye says he sometimes traps 13 possums in a row. “Once I start trapping and
catch one, I just keep setting the traps. “They eat the roses, the fruit trees and the pohutukawas. We used to have wood pigeons but they are gone because the possums eat the eggs.” Auckland Council spokesmen Biran Singh and Garrick McCarthy say the council is responsible for managing pests on public parks and reserves but not on neighbouring private property. “If there is a localised increase in pest densities in the area, then it could be possible to establish a community group to support the pest control programme on the public reserves.” There are many education programmes throughout schools, events and the media providing a platform to inform and educate the public about pest control processes and methodology, they say. “A member of the biosecurity team would be happy to come and meet with FOM or the community to provide this platform in person.” ■■ Part II will run next week.

Bless Howick Baptist
My husband Shelton was a resident in the Howick Baptist Health Care for over five years. After a stroke in 2010 he was brought there from Middlemore Hospital almost paralysed. The physiotherapists there were able to put him into action and within a couple of months he was walking with the help of a walker. I thought it was a miracle. He was able to join us at home whenever family gathered for a small function, even for a short time. He also participated a couple times at important temple events. Three years later he was confined to a wheelchair. Probably

¾ days in comfort care was excellent beyond description. When I was almost living in his room, everyone saw to my comfort as well. Every two hours the nurses and carers in charge would pop in, turn him into a comfortable position, give him whatever medication to soothe him. Hats off to everyone at Howick Baptist for their dedication to patients. It was indeed my husband’s second home. Lastly, a big thank you to all. May you all be blessed with good health, strength and happiness.

I wish to thank the doctors, admin staff, nurses, carers and those helping in the pantry for making Shelton’s life happy there. He was well cared for and looked after. In his final year he was totally dependent on the hoist for he could not use his legs. They lifted him to be with utmost care. He was showered, cleaned, shaved, powdered etc all with patience and care, even when he pushed them away with irritation sometimes. They understood and forgot those instances. The final

study at university, NCEA has the distinct advantage of being a blend of "internal assessments" and "external assessments". This mirrors the system at university, where grades gained from essays, laboratory work, field trip reports etc are combined with end of semester exam results for the overall grade. In this respect, the Cambridge system of relying totally on the end of year exam for a results offers a less useful preparation. Add to this the considerably wider range of subjects which is offered by NCEA compared with Cambridge and the preference for many well informed families is, quite reasonably, for NCEA. None of these three, deservedly well respected, schools offer Cambridge and yet every year they have students who progress on to study in universities all over New Zealand and also at the most prestigious universities in Australia, UK, USA and elsewhere. Students who have progressed through the NCEA system continue to gain strong results in scholarship challenges, both from the NZQA exams and through competitive awards in a huge range of locations. t is important for parents and the wider community to understand that NCEA is accepted as the New Zealand qualification by any other country which is part of the "modern" education world. The details of the system are not necessarily known by the individuals in each other country. This situation also applies elsewhere, for example with the details of every (different) qualification system which is used in different Australian states. Importantly, each country recognises the system of each other country, so the equivalent levels of achievement are listed for immigration purposes, university entrance and so on. A significant difference is in the case of the USA, for which everyone will need to sit the SATs to gain university entrance qualifications. As for the "Chinese immigrants" who Gary Hollis (Times, October 8) asserts pay all that money to gain Cambridge, he is not seeing the whole picture. First, I do wonder whether he is aware that Westlake Boys High School recently announced its intention to withdraw from the Cambridge system. He also seems to be unaware of all those families (from every

This is mathematical crime I would appreciate it if Gary could re-explain his mathematics as it makes close to no sense. I’ll put this in a way that Gary can understand. Although one can easily reduce 100 “two-and-a-half times” (which is the equivalent of taking 40 per cent, mind you) to 40, one cannot compensate by multiplying four by “two-and-a-half times to the 10 per cent”. This is because basic mathematics dictates that ‘if the denominator is changed, the same changes must be made to the numerator’. If we “reduce two-and-a-half times” as Gary suggests, we would still end up with the (correct) value of 1.6. Additionally, Gary’s column diagram has no mathematical significance whatsoever. Just because one can put two columns next to each other and shade up to 4mm doesn’t indicate that the shaded quantities are mathematically equal. Gary’s logic is the equivalent of saying that a pear is an apple, purely because the two fruits are sitting right next to each other. This is bordering on a mathematical crime and I find it astounding that this mathematics is actually being considered. If you are still not convinced,
just put “4 per cent of 40 per cent” straight into Google. Voila. Brian Yeom Half Moon Bay
Give up on the maths
I’m sorry Gary, but Greg (and most probably Brian) can’t understand your attempt to justify why 4 per cent of 40 per cent is 10 per cent. You argue that quote, “If in the fraction, four over a hundred is reduced two-and-a-half times to 40, then the four must be compensated by being multiplied by two-and-a-half to the 10 per cent”. Gary, take it from me, (a former head of mathematics) that to find an equivalent fraction to four over a hundred, you have to reduce (divide) both the numerator (4) and the denominator (100). You don’t divide the numerator and multiply the denominator. Thus dividing (not multiplying) the 4 by two-and-a-half gets us back to the original 1.6 per cent. QED. You have also written on the flag debate. Please continue to write on non-mathematical issues! Greg Hawkins Farm Cove Editor’s note: Correspondence on the maths problems is now closed with this excellent elucidation from a mathematics HOD!
Poor Karma deserved more I am writing about your story on Karma a few weeks ago. My mum and I were so brokenhearted over this story as many others would be. That little girl struggled for nine months, had her babies, struggled, but was such an amazing, wonderful little mum, then lost everything – her babies and then her own innocent life. What my mum and I will never understand, I am sure like many other loving, caring animal owners, is why she was not given a chance to a new life? Reading other letters in your paper, there were loving, caring people that came forward to help Karma, had no chance to do so, then Animal Management could do this to her. (It) is a total disgrace. People said she was scared, not vicious, and went with these people without a fight. That, again, broke our hearts. Karma deserved to live her life like so many other innocent babies, not lose it without (being) given a chance. Something must be done. It is devastating and disgusting. So much love to Karma and her little ones. God bless. Karen Gallon Half Moon Bay

Bus network launch By Marianne Kelly
I
ntroduction of a new public transport network for the Super City aims to challenge people to give serious thought to making a journey by bus and/or train. Auckland Transport (AT) is about to roll out its proposed network for the south-east and central suburbs for consultation. Anthony Cross, AT’s public transport network manager says Aucklanders have been in a default position over public transport so AT is starting to challenge it. “The default Auckland response has been that it’s too hard,” he says. “We have a lot of sympathy for that reaction about which bus they can take and where they can go. “But we are stripping away the complexity so they can’t use that as an excuse anymore.” The biggest change is an allday service, 7am-7pm, seven days a week, at least every 15 minutes, which AT says, means that passengers can throw away the timetable and just ‘turn up and go’, even on weekends. Buses will operate outside the hours 7am-7pm, but possibly will be at reduced frequencies. These routes are: 55: Howick to Auckland City, via Pakuranga and Panmure (also serving Newmarket, Auckland Hospital and

City universities). 53: Botany to Panmure, via Ti Rakau Drive and Pakuranga. 31 (proposed southern network): Botany to Otara, Papatoetoe and Mangere. Transfers will be necessary for long journeys and access to a wide range of destinations. Apart from the frequent route from Howick into the Central City, other services will finish at Panmure Station where an easy transfer can be made to frequent bus or train services to the Central City and other destinations. Increased frequency of trains, running every 15 minutes, will encourage bus passengers to disembark at Panmure to travel on to the city, AT says. The other key part of the
changes is the introduction next year of a new simplified system that calculates fares based on how many zones are travelled through as part of a journey. Passengers will not be charged more for transferring during the journey as the entire journey will be treated as a single trip. “We are putting an effort into making sure as few people as possible are disadvantaged,” Mr Cross says. “Most will have the same fares and a lot lower. For example a bus journey from Bucklands Beach to the airport will become one zone. “Passengers might have to do the journey on two buses, but the fare will be less and there will be more choice because buses will be more frequent.” ■■ Changes in the south-east are expected to be implemented in 2017. ■■ Howick/Pakuranga public information events will be held at 6-10pm on October 10 at Pakuranga Night Market, Pakuranga Plaza (under the Warehouse); 10am-1pm, November 2, Fencible Lounge, Uxbridge Road, Howick; 9am3pm, November 14, Pakuranga Plaza; 4-7.30pm, November 25, Half Moon Bay ferry terminal. Have your say by filling in the Freepost feedback form on the brochure distributed to all householders; complete the online feedback form at AT.govt.nz/newnetwork; join the online discussion forum at AT.govt.nz/newnetwork.

Sea stalwart turns 60 It’s not always been smooth sailing but after 60 years, one community group is glad to mark its diamond jubilee at the very same site where it began. The Bucklands Beach Sea Scouts was initially founded as a land scouting group in 1955, later transitioning to a Sea Scout Group thanks to the leaders’ and members’ affinity for the sea. The first hall was built on the edge of Bucklands Beach Domain in Morrow Avenue, using pine and macrocarpa timber from Pigeon Mountain and milled by ES Pidgeon Sawmills, which stood where Placemakers is today on Pakuranga Road. he last 30 minutes of the All Blacks’ match against Tonga was the best half they’ve played. Tonga however played well, they played really well. They put the All Blacks under a lot of pressure and made them work hard for those tries, but the All Blacks still managed to show some class. All Blacks meeting France in the quarter final is a blast from the past. It will be tough but I have complete faith in our team and, of course, I want the best outcome for them. The boys know what’s at stake and they will pick the pace up and do everything they can to win.

GOOD TIMES: The All Blacks performing a haka prior to a Test match against France in 2006.
I think the best team we can have will include skipper Richie McCaw, because Richie’s just Richie. I’d also like to see Victor Vito and Sam Cane in the mix. Fast forward to the
semi-finals, I can imagine we would play South Africa. To be honest, they’ve been playing below par lately so if they do make it through, it will be a chance for the All Blacks
to switch on and show their strength. One team to keep our eye on is Australia. They have been outstanding and are probably the team we need to be most worried about. Regarding some of the other quarter finalists, everyone’s thinking Ireland will win. They have definitely proven their strength but I think even Argentina have what it takes. They have been under the radar but, honestly, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they pull through.

Growing summer bounty – with Palmers Pakuranga Spring is in full swing in October and has to be one of the most exciting months in the gardening calendar. It is the traditional time to start putting down tomatoes and other summer vegetables, and with the temperatures rising the growth of everything just takes off. In the flower garden, if you’re growing roses now’s the time to take action to ensure that they thrive and look their best. Spray with Yates Shield to prevent fungal diseases and pest damage on your precious blooms, and give them a good feed of Palmers Rose Fertiliser as they start on the biggest growth period of the year. It’s also a good time to plant any new roses using Garden X Compost and a slow release fertiliser like Novatec to give them the best start in life. Prune back any flowering shrubs around now, and feed acid loving plants like camellias and azaleas after flowering with an acid fertiliser. It’s also now warm enough to sow the seeds of your favourite flowering annuals straight into the ground, so grab some alyssum, cosmos, marigolds and sunflower seeds and get planting. Carnations, dahlia, petunia and gerberas are still best sown into trays for transplanting at a later date. This is an essential time to turn your attention to your kitchen garden, so prepare the area first with plenty of Watkins Organic Compost dug well in and a dressing of Palmers Blood & Bone and Palmers Sheep Pellets. Sow vegetable seedlings straight into the ground including beans, spinach, radish and courgettes, and tomatoes really hit their stride now the warmer weather is here. Plant new seasons herbs like basil, chives, coriander, parsley and rocket, for fresh zingy

hether you prefer prints that draw the eye or the timeless elegance of neutral colours, a big choice of products for window treatments is available, such as the popular natural fibre drapes, blinds and solar shades. If drapes are preferred, it is advisable to choose silk or linen. If the walls and furniture are extremely colourful, balance the overall look with drapes in neutral tones. If the decor needs brightening up, choose drapes in vivid colours. Neutral shades blend in perfectly with a classic decor, while bright colours and patterns are eye-catching and a perfect complement to a modern decor. Blinds are making a comeback. Eco-friendly, affordable, exotic and easy-to-maintain bamboo blinds have it all. To protect the house interior from the sun, go for solar shades which fit well with uncluttered, modern decors. Shutters also add a special touch. Deciding on drapes, shades or blinds depends on preferences, including the type of decor.

f you want to sell your home as quickly as possible, start by making it more welcoming for buyers. Good lighting is the secret, so don’t be afraid to open curtains and blinds to create as many sources of light as possible. This will also make rooms seem larger. A spotlessly clean home is essential, and don’t forget to eliminate any bad smells, such as animals, cigarette smoke, food and dampness. A good cleanup never hurts, but this is even truer when it comes to selling a house. Declutter the rooms while keeping a certain sense of ba-
lance. Make sure it’s easy to move around in them. Think about storing furniture and objects that make rooms look crowded or that could turn off prospective house buyers. Also, depersonalise the house by removing personal items such as family photos. Highlighting the most beautiful features of the house is another important aspect of home staging, such as fireplace, mouldings and panelling. This will give the house more character and make it stand out from other properties on the market. Be sure to do any small repair
jobs and replace wall colours with more neutral shades, if necessary. The first thing potential buyers see is the outside of your home, so replace any torn window screens, and wash the siding, doors and windows. Above all, remember to keep the front and backyards looking neat and tidy. The best way to maximise the chances of selling is to look at the property from the point of view of a potential buyer. That’s right. It’s already time to start detaching yourself from your home and get mentally prepared for moving on.

Fresh paint for spring – call the experts A
s the spring to do list around the home builds up, refreshing the interior and exterior becomes a top priority. Naturally, a fresh coat of paint is often the way to go. But as now is the prime time for recreation, homeowners who prefer to enjoy their spare time relaxing may be better off leaving their painting jobs to the experts from Mustills Painting Services. Greg and Debbie Mustill employ an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “In today’s working family scenario it so easy to let maintenance slide,” says Greg. “Unfortunately, when paintwork deteriorates it can downgrade the value of a home, and if you’re thinking of selling it’s a turn-off to buyers. “Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until suddenly one is confronted by a big and costly bill to put things right.” Greg says now is the ideal time for painting houses, fences, garages and other buildings. “We tackle every job, no matter how big or small, with the same thorough professionalism, starting with proper surface preparation and undercoating then carrying through to the final topcoat and finish. Importantly, we don’t keep our customers
waiting.” As an added bonus for customers, Mustills has a great all-year round special and is offering FREE prepaint washing with all exterior repaints (conditions apply). “In fact, now’s a good time to plan ahead and take advantage of this special,” ■■ Derek’s says Greg. And, as always before painting, Greg consults thoroughly with clients as to colour, the type of paint most suited to the job and the number of coats required. “We use all major paint brands, such as Wattyl, Dulux and Resene, and work with oil and water-based paints. We also advise on the correct sheen to use as this can make a big difference in high traffic areas, wet rooms, or where exterior walls are exposed to the worst of the elements.” All Mustills clients’ receive an on-site consultation and FREE, written, no-obligation quote so there are no surprises. BBQ, rain or shine with Fresco
Expert Praise Bucklands Beach local Derek Shortt was recently in awe of the work completed by Mustills Painting Services Ltd on his waterfront property. A former general manager for ASB’s corporate property division, Derek has a very discerning eye and has been in the industry for 49 years. “Our house is weatherboard, with a flat roof and aluminium windows,” he says. “The painting job included lots of detailed work ‘cutting-in’ around the windows frames and sills but the painters were extremely thorough, very tidy in their work and always responsive to our requests.” Derek also found the team punctual and respectful. “They never painted in bad weather and always planned their work by following the sun round to ensure that surfaces were cool to work on. And there was no loud music!”

• 10-12 Pams 20cm bamboo skewers • 500g chicken breast (boneless/skinless) • 2 tsps Gregg’s cumin seeds, ground • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 2 oranges, juice and zest • 350g Sunrice brown rice • 1 bunch asparagus, woody ends snapped off • 420g Oak garden peas (mint), drained • ½ cup fresh mint, chopped • 190g Pams pesto Also need: salt, pepper, olive oil
Method:
Boil the jug and soak the skewers in boiling water. So they won’t burn when cooking. Cut each chicken breast into 5- 6 strips. It will depend on the size of the chicken breast but each strip should be about the size of a chicken tenderloin. Place the chicken into a bowl with the cumin, garlic, ½ the orange zest and a little oil. Season well and put to one side, covered.
Answers under Public Notices in the Classifieds section.
LIVE DAY
Cook the rice as per instructions, using the orange juice as part of the liquid. Thread the chicken onto the skewers. Cook the chicken skewers as you normally would (BBQ, pan fry or grill). This should take about 5-8 minutes each side. Keep turning until well cooked.
Put a pot of water onto boil. Cut the asparagus into 3 pieces and blanch for 2-3 minutes putting the stalk pieces in first. Drain the asparagus well and mix in the peas and keep warm in the pot. Mix the mint, remaining orange zest and pesto through the well-drained rice and lastly fold through the

Reserve early and have a great Christmas f you are in charge of organising a Christmas party for your family, a group of friends, your company, or just a romantic dinner for two, do yourself a favour and reserve early — that means right now! Why the rush? It’s true that there are still a few weeks before all those Christmas parties begin, but there are plenty of reasons why you shouldn’t procrastinate on this. By looking now for the ideal restaurant, bar, pub, reception hall or hotel for your party, you’ll have many more possibilities to choose from as you search for a place that will suit your needs. Another advantage of making early reservations is that you’ll be able to

choose the nicest room or the bestplaced table, an undeniable privilege during this busy time of year when places are snapped up quickly. If you get on the ball now, you won’t end up with the table that no one else wanted, like the one next to the main entrance or the kitchen. Either one of those scenarios are enough to ruin the party mood, whether it’s a romantic dinner for two or a huge reception. If you reserve now, you are more likely to be treated well, as a good customer. One last reason to get busy: if you reserve early, the success of the party is sure to earn you a ton of compliments!

o one can deny that cellphones are one of the greatest innovations to hit the market in the last 25 years or so, particularly now that they are no longer those massive contraptions that were first introduced in the 1980s. In fact, it’s hard to find people these days without a cell phone surgically attached to their ear. We use cell phones at work, at play, while we’re eating…and sometimes when we’re driving. Let’s not mince any words here – talking on a cell phone while you’re driving is extremely dangerous. Hard-core cellphone users claim that they can eliminate this danger by using a “hands-free” cellphone, which allows the driver to talk without having to hold onto it. Others say that hands-free cells are just as dangerous as conventional models.
Indeed, talking on a phone and talking to a passenger is not the same thing; your passenger can see what you see and adapt the conversation accordingly. Your boss can’t see the little girl who just ran out in front of you to chase her ball, so he’ll just keep on screaming at you. Talking on cell phones while driving has already resulted in countless accidents — many of them fatal.
If you absolutely have to talk while driving, first pull over and then have your conversation. If you insist on using your cellphone while you’re driving and plan to do any traveling in your car this summer, you might want to seriously reconsider. It’s illegal. Using cellphones while driving became illegal in November 2009, but since then there’s been a 273 per cent increase in detection, a New Zealand
media report claimed last month. Police ran a two-week nationwide push in September to educate road users about the dangers of driving distracted. Research done last year for the New Zealand Transport Agency found 60 per cent of people admit to using their phones while driving, according to a news report in January. Nearly 30 deaths since 2007 were blamed on cellphone use in cars. Please remember that driving a vehicle requires your full attention. Just because you are an impeccable driver, it doesn’t necessarily mean that those around you are as well. You might suddenly and unexpectedly need to make up for their lack of driving skills. The question is – can you do that while talking on a cell phone?

Golf course given layout change H
owick Golf Club’s beautiful course at Musick Point is undergoing a makeover. The course layout has just been changed for the first time in at least 30 years. Alistair Rowe, the golf club’s board chairman says the main changes involved re-numbering some holes with the old 1st becoming the 10th, the old 9th becoming the 1st and the old 8th becoming the 9th. “There have been a couple of changes in the middle of the course to accommodate this, but our 17th and 18th holes, which
are two of the best finishing golf holes in Auckland, and which have spectacular views from Waiheke Island to Coromandel, have been retained in their old positions on the card,” he says. The objective of the change was to get the 1st and 10th tees, and the 9th and 18th greens all adjacent to the clubhouse. “This allows for more convenient nine-hole play, and for members and visitors to have the opportunity to obtain refreshments, and use the locker room facilities at the half-way point,” says Rowe.
“It also places the 1st tee next to the main putting and chipping practice green.” The re-numbering work – including reprinting the cards – has been completed. There will be a new pathway constructed to enhance the movement from the new 15th green to the new 16th hole. It will be done as time and materials are available. “We hope that the changes will make the golfing experience better for all who play at the Musick Point course,” he says. New signage improves visitors’
navigation, and those who wish to play only nine holes will have a choice of a slightly shorter (more par threes) par 33 half, or a longer par 36 half. Both halves start and finish at the clubhouse. As to cost, new tee marker numbers and directional signs were very generously provided by a member, Brian Macken, and installed by member volunteers and our own course staff, says Rowe. The new path will cost around $3000, but construction will be combined with improvement of
the drainage in that area Most feedback has been good. “The ladies in particular are happy with it as it means they now have two par 5s on each half, and decent bathroom facilities at the half-way point,” he says. For Twilight golf, a nine hole competition with a two-tee start starts and finishes at the clubhouse so the long walk to the 10th tee, or back to the clubhouse from the 9th green, is a thing of the past. “The course is in great condition, with excellent greens and spectacular sea and island views.”
Auckland East roll to third straight win By Rumer-Grace Archer Auckland East has repeated Roller Mills history in the final against Bay of Plenty with both teams winning by draw - the same result as 20 years ago. The Roller Mills is the pinnacle of junior rugby with the best year seven and eight players from the upper North Island provincial unions vying for the Roller Mills Shield in a
week long tournament. This year’s Auckland East team featured five boys from the Pakuranga United Rugby club – Dylan Almandoz, Jason Honour, Regan McGregor, Chicago Doyle and Harrison Smith as co-captain. With Auckland East having won the tournament for the last three years in a row, this year’s team were out to continue the legacy. The team,
coached by Bond Tagaloa along with Brian Ofamo’oni and Sam Tuia trained three times a week for 10 weeks to prepare for the tournament. Sticking to Roller Mills rules, a 13-all draw in the final crowned Bay of Plenty and Auckland East both tournament winners.

Milner-Skudder All Blacks ace W
hereas the All Blacks must overcome the mental barrier of Rugby World Cup defeats in 1999 and 2007 in their upcoming quarter-final clash in Cardiff, France’s biggest concern will be containing elusive wizard Nehe Milner-Skudder. In normal circumstances, Richie McCaw’s men should be confident of overcoming a French team comfortably beaten 24-9 by Ireland and one which has two fewer days to recover. But first the All Black forwards need to emulate the ruthless efficiency of an Irish pack that dominated France and denied them possession. Certainly their backs are a class above. So far Milner-Skudder and Sonny Bill Williams have been the game-breakers with each possessing a snappy step and passes that create tries for others. With Daniel Carter lifting his game in the 47-9 defeat of Tonga and Milner-Skudder setting up Ma’a Nonu’s 30th try in his 100th test, there is reason for confidence despite some fumbling moments in pool play. Now faced with sudden death playoff, McCaw’s men should sharpen mentally and physically to overcome France before a likely semi-final against the ruthless Springboks who have

bounced back strongly since their shock opening round loss to brave Japan. South Africa should beat injury-ravaged Wales who made Australia defend magnificently before grabbing a hard-fought victory and Australia should have too much class for Scotland. However expect Six Nations champions Ireland to face a titanic tussle against Argentina who now have the backs to capitalise on the power play of their
forwards. While it was fitting to see Tony Woodcock celebrate his 114th and final test as an All Black with a try, the hamstring injury which ended the veteran loosehead prop’s career came as no surprise following the problems he has suffered in recent years. However, the All Blacks have been fortunate that thus far he is the only serious injury they have suffered although the scrum has not been as dominant as it has

been in the past. That should not be too big a problem against the disappointing but unpredictable French. But it could be should they face South Africa and likely finalists Australia whose once powder puff scrum has transformed into a real juggernaut. Apart from Carter, the big improvers against the rugged Tongans were Jerome Kaino who revelled in the tough stuff and the workaholic Sam Whitelock. With McCaw rested, tireless Sam Cane once again showed he will be worthy No 7 replacement when his champion captain retires. However, retirement will be the last thing on McCaw’s mind as he sets himself to lead his men in defence of the Webb Ellis Trophy. It won’t come easy given the improvement made by the Wallabies and Springboks. But McCaw likes nothing better than a fierce battle. In Kieran Read he has an able lieutenant although uncharacter-
istic fumbles lead to the suspicion that he may be suffering the after effects of past concussions. Hopefully, that is not the case because Read has been a major player in the All Blacks success story over the past four years under the astute mentoring of chief coach Steve Hansen. Having claimed that the All Blacks have purposely failed to show their hand to this point, now is the time for them to reveal their true worth, are ready to rumble and force opponents to crumble. Let the battle begin. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer, columnist and author
