Piling foundations for the new Half Moon Bay ferry wharf are complete. The Downer construction team will now move on to installing the marine foundation and the pontoon. The fitting out of the wharf and the installation of the permanent concrete deck will start from this week. Auckland Transport says the new pier will give more shelter to passengers and will have storage for bikes. It is due to open in early 2017.

Vacant site revived By MARIANNE KELLY
A
three-hectare site in residential Bucklands Beach, blighted by years of controversy, is about to head into happier days with plans to establish a boutique retirement village. Last May BeGroup New Zealand purchased the Thurston Place property from the Whenua Haumi Roroa o Tamaki Makaurau Limited Partnership which acquired it in August 2015 from the Ministry of Education under the Right of First Refusal (RFR) provisions of the Nga Mana Whenua o Tamaki Makaurau Collective Redress Act 2014. The site formerly housed the Waimokoia residential school which was closed in 2009. It then became the focus of fierce resident resistance when, in 2010, the Ministry of Education proposed to build a secondary day college for children in CYF (Child, Youth
and Family) care. “We instantly saw value in the site for what we do and pulled out all stops to secure it,” says Guy Eady, BeGroup’s managing director. “Our research showed there were not a lot of options [for retirement] on the peninsula. “From a demographic point of view we believe the market needs a retirement facility. For anyone who lives on the peninsula and wants to stay here, there are limited choices.” BeGroup operates The Falls Estate in Whangarei and is currently developing Rawhiti Estate on the site of the former Rawhiti Bowling Club in Remuera. It’s currently applying for resource consent for the Half Moon Bay development. Stage one will involve 60 independent living apartments and associated communal areas including a heated indoor swimming pool. The rest of the site will be devel-
oped for more retirement apartments, a rest home, hospital, and memory loss care unit. The company hopes to make a start on stage one in the second half of next year and anticipates an 18 month to two-year build. The total cost of all stages is anticipated to be more than $100 million. Consultation with the local community has started, the company’s chief property officer and Cockle Bay resident, Brett Meyer says. “We had a meeting with the Pigeon Mountain Primary School board,” he says. “The school is a direct neighbour and we’ve agreed to continue to allow for a school off-loading place on the Thurston Place site but it will be controlled so that it’s a safe drop-off place for children and parents.” The company had its first meeting with immediate surrounding
neighbours three weeks ago. “We introduced ourselves to them and told them of our intentions for the site,” Mr Meyer says. “We are committed to keeping them informed as we continue to come up with concepts.” The aim is to have the residential apartments replicate the appearance of a sequence of detached houses on several levels, but all connected on the lower level. Mr Eady says the philosophy is to create an asset for the community, “a place where elderly people can congregate and live, where a lot of people will want to visit them. It will be a special place.” Currently members of the public use the site as an access linking with walkways to the Half Moon Bay ferry and BeGroup hopes to incorporate a “controlled access” walkway into the village design.

owick residents can expect a leaflet in their letter boxes over the next few days urging them to give generously to the Save Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve appeals. The Times is sponsoring the leaflet drop which is supporting the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) fight to save iconic Hauraki Gulf views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve. The appeal is raising funds to help cover the costs of lodging an appeal in the Environment and High Courts against Auckland Council. Proposed plan changes would allow multiple 13-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Park Hill roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill. Money raised so far totals $9633, of which over half was spent to lodge the appeal. So far the largest contribution has been from Howick
Local Board elected member Jim Donald with $1000; and other $500 contributions from Times managing director Reay Neben; Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart, and prominent Howick businessman John Roy. Gayleen Mackereth who chairs the HRRA says more large contributions are essential to continue the fight against allowing incongruous apartment buildings and ‘integrated residential developments’ forming a dense wall opposite historic Stockade Hill through the up-zoning of sections along the ridge line in the Cockle Bay ‘single house’ zone. “Although we are dealing with only a minute number of sections, predominantly along Mellons Bay Road, which will scarcely have any impact on housing availability in the area, they will have a huge impact on our previous views,” she says. “Housing Corporation NZ and the council seem intent on opposing us, hence the need for litigation.” The Judge has asked the council

TIMES APPEAL to outline its stance on up-zoning in a test case by October 28, Mrs Mackereth says. “HRRA will then have only five days to reject or accept their interpretation of the Unitary Plan as it applies to our appeal, pending further action,” she says. “This means a tremendous amount of voluntary work by us to prepare our submission for the legal team representing us. “We urge everyone to write to the local and national newspapers, to your MP and Prime Minister John Key expressing how the loss of views and incongruous developments opposite our historic Stock-
ade Hill site and our War Memorial Cenotaph at the entrance of our village, will affect you personally. “We know those who signed our petition are passionate about keeping the views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve and we beg those people to put their hand in their pocket (if they have not already done so) to give generously to enable us to protect these precious views in perpetuity.” ■■ Howickians willing to support this urgent cause can make donations to “The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association” ASB Highland Park account number 123089-0123712-02. ■■ PETITION
More signatures are needed for the HRRA’s petition which can be signed online at www.Change.org. Type in the “Search” button “Stockade” for it to come up for signing. The online petition will close soon. Petition forms are still available at the Howick Information Centre for hand-written signing.
Teen cards massive score to win tournament Pakuranga’s Rose Zheng won her first event on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour at the weekend. Zheng carded a brilliant final round score of seven-under-par at the 2016 John Jones Steel Harewood Open in Christchurch on Sunday. She finished the event at 17-under-par, with her nearest opponent seven shots behind.
“It feels great, I have never felt like this before,” Zheng, 14, said of her convincing win. “I’ve never played this good in a tournament before, I’ve never been this far under par!” She said it was just about being consistent and waiting for birdies. “I didn’t go searching and it paid off.
“I can’t describe how happy I am and hopefully it will keep going from here.” Zheng will travel to Wellington next week to compete in the Cobra Puma New Zealand Women’s Amateur Qualifying event.

birthday girl: Enid Sinclair Frangos celebrated with her daughter Sandra Miller at Pepperjacks, Pine Harbour. Photo Janet Keeling
100 very happy years By Marianne Kelly Drop by the Maraetai Wharf Cafe any morning and there’s a good chance a sprightly lady will be there enjoying a coffee and reading the morning’s newspaper. Enid Sinclair Frangos, who turned 100 recently, regards herself as “part of the furniture”. When her daughter, Sandra Miller goes on her regular walks along the beach, she drops Enid off at the cafe. “It’s a lovely beach and a lovely atmosphere,” Enid says. She’s self-sufficient in her little home behind Sandra and husband Glenn’s Beachlands house. She makes her own breakfast and lunch while Sandra prepares an evening meal. Reaching 100 is one of those facts of life, according to Enid. “I don’t really think about it. Life has its ups and downs,” she says. But she thinks it’s mostly a case of “good living”
with good food and a glass of wine. “I’ve been keeping busy,” she says. In fact it was only eyesight failure six months ago that put a stop to her knitting for her large family. Enid is a country girl and her life has been all about farming and family life. She grew up on a Waikato sheep farm at Naike, west of Huntly. She eventually met and married Kemon Frangos whose parents came to New Zealand from Greece and eventually took over a dairy farm two miles up the road from Enid’s family. She moved to the dairy farm when she married Kemon. But fishing and the sea lured and the couple moved to Bucklands Beach in 1965 when Kemon retired. He died aged 75 in 1991. These days Enid enjoys the company of her four children, 12 grand-children, 22 greatgrand-children and four (plus one to be born soon) greatgreat-grand-children.
f any Macleans College students had dreams of stardom on the world’s opera stage they were firmly brought back to earth by one of New Zealand and the world’s greatest divas, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. It’s more than 25 years since Dame Kiri visited the school which has named one of its ‘houses’ after her. At a special assembly on Monday morning the soprano related how her mother’s continuing vision as she grew up was that she would be an opera singer. “So I did become one,” she said. “It’s been a most fun time, but it is mainly about work, work, work and more work. “I dream about work, about the exercises and about being better each day. I am 72 now and for 50 years have done nothing but hard work. I don’t ask you to sacrifice things, but working is very rewarding.” She also had a firm word about the role of social media in young singers’ lives. “The availability of knowledge is massive. But at the moment I look at a young singer who has learned a work from YouTube and I say ‘I can’t teach you’. You don’t learn by rote from a recording. You leave it behind and put your own self into it. We didn’t have YouTube when we started out.” She described the time she stepped in to a Metropolitan Opera performance at late notice saying, “I don’t know whether it was foolish or brave”.
“You have to have a lot of courage to do this,” she said. “You have to know that you will be fine and have courage. In my world, people don’t give you lots of accolades,” she said. “Covent Garden told me I was quite good but they offered me a five-year contract which provided me with the best teaching and advice. My instinctive decision was to take that chance and I was guided through my education for five years with top quality teachers. “It gave me strength. It must have been the Ngati Porou in me.” She said starting the Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation in New Zealand was aimed at helping and financing young New Zealanders in their opera careers. “It is a long haul and there are successes. But if you train to be an opera singer you don’t necessarily come out being one. We ask ‘is

someone going to stand up to the rigours of the operatic world’?” Events, such as those at Macleans College, she told the Times were about “what the kids get out of them”. “I want to inspire them. They have seen me doing well and I want them to see it in their own field.” She visits New Zealand usually twice a year, this time performing a recital in Auckland last week and working with her foundation students. Asked if she would like to return more regularly, she said she always wanted to live in two places. “I have things to do in England and I can’t be in both places all the time. While I am healthy, I will continue this work.” Retirement, her PR manager told the Times, was not in her vocabulary.

A royal feast for the kings D
arbar means a grand reception in a courtroom of an Indian ruler. Now that Darbar Lounge has opened its doors at 23A The Parade Buckland’s Beach, the restaurant with breathtaking views of the waterfront promises the best in hospitality. Having opened its doors on October 1, the Indian restaurant is fully licensed and specialises both in classic Indian cuisine and tandoor dishes. Highly recommended are the juicy and succulent Seekh Kebabs, lamb mince seasoned with aromatic spices, rolled onto a skewer and roasted in a charcoal tandoor oven; the melt-in-the mouth Malai Tikkas, tender chicken fillets marinated in cashew buts, fresh cream, garlic, ginger and cheese are also a must-have. The moist Fish Tikkas slathered with thick yogurt and a subtle blend of roasted spices and herbs that enrich the fish without overwhelming its delicate flavour is equally delightful. The piping hot-melt-in-the-mouth naans are the good accompaniment with the Chicken Tikkas and can be topped with ingredients like fresh garlic and coriander. The slow-cooked lamb folded into a Kashimiri-style Lamb Rogan Josh or the Madras Chicken, a traditional South Indian style curry cooked with coconut spices curry thickened with coconut milk and spiced with roasted chillies, ginger and garlic, takes you on a culinary journey. It gives the feeling of partaking in a royal feast presented by the Mughal emperors in their darbars. Malai Kofta a sweet version of vegetarian croquettes is made with cottage cheese and steeped in a spice-infused tomato puree. Vegetable Kofta, Chole Masala, Butter Paneer, Dal Tadka, there is plenty for the green eaters on this menu. A selection of Indo-Chinese dishes feature in the Chef’s Special. The most popular ones being the tongue-tingling Chilli Chicken and Manchurian Chicken an Indo-Chinese style vegetable/chicken balls cooked with green chillies, onion, capsicums and special Manchurian sauce.
Vikram Madaan director Darbar Lounge says that the chefs make full use of local produce for their menu of old favourites for curry lovers. Mr Madaan has 20 years of retail experience and is keen to add a personal touch to the new hospitality business. The 80-90-seater restaurant with hard to beat views is available for birthday, Christmas parties and special occasions.
It also serves freshly squeezed juices to boost your energy levels as well as smoothies and a selection of salads to feel fresh and stay healthy. Darbar Lounge currently has an introductory offer of $10 meals on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Indian restaurant provides a perfect spot for an intimate dinner for two, family dining or a catch up with friends.

School expansion awaits ministry nod By Farida Master
T
here is a sharp contrast between one section of Elim Christian College junior campus in Golflands that is buzzing with activity, while the other half of the property is in a state of disrepair. Big containers, mounds of dirt and construction debris give the impression of building activity being suddenly stopped in its tracks. Irked neighbours in the adjoining property to the school have drawn attention to the building material lying unused. There could be health and safety issue, complained one of the neighbours to the Times. On being contacted, Murray Burton, principal of Elim Christian College is honest about the stalled progress: “I understand it’s rather unsightly and my apologies to the neighbours,” he says. The 2.5 ha of land where the junior campus now stands used to be soccer field that belonged to Auckland Council, he says. “We leased the land from the Crown and with permission, built on it. However, after the first phase of development we were informed that we cannot continue with the next phase of expansion.” The Ministry of Education is doing some number crunching and while Mr Burton says that being a former principal of State schools he well understands that “the Ministry first consid-
ers the numbers in State network. But as a state-integrated school we are a very different school with families choosing us because of our special character,” he emphasises. Mr Burton takes pains to explain that increasing the roll of Elim Christian College to date hasn’t reduced numbers in existing State schools by any more than 2-3 per school. The school has the intake data to prove it. “We’ve currently got a waiting list of 400 students with addresses that want to enrol in our school but unfortunately, right now, there’s no space to accommodate them. We can only pay for the building if we take in 300-400 more students in our junior campus.” The frustration is palpable since in 2011, Anne Tolley, the then Minister of Education, granted a roll increase to a maximum roll of 1000 to enable the Junior Campus to be constructed, accommodating years 0-8 students. However, a subsequent roll increase application was turned down and the school is currently awaiting the nod again from Minister Hekia Parata, to start on the second phase of building that has been stalled for a while now. “The school has been functioning at half its capacity and we hope to get the consent soon,” says Mr Burton. “Recognising the beauty of Golflands, we didn’t want to build two-storey on the junior campus and the architect’s
plans have only enhanced the suburb and its values. Our junior campus showcases a very modern learning environment and we are a good example of stewardship—our investment will save the government building costs of over $50m.” In an attempt to future-proof the school, the proprietors have bought over an adjoining property at 159 Botany Road, where the senior college will relocate, allowing the church to expand. The proposed new education facility for 850 senior students is on the 1.28 ha land at the corner of Botany and Cascades Road that is currently being used as a car park and a social service facility by the Elim Christian Church. The school has also bought 2 ha of prime land at the Pakuranga Golf Club where they plan to have a purposebuilt sports facility with an international hockey and soccer fields as well as tennis and netball courts. But none of that is possible till they get permission to enrol more students at both the junior and senior colleges. Currently, the senior campus from year 7-13 accommodates only 650 students whilst the junior campus has 320 students. The college anxiously awaits the heads up from the Ministry of Education to increase the total roll to 1500 initially and then later to 1700 students, which in turn would pay for the expansion of the school.

Haute furniture designs for hot nights Freedom Furniture has launched a pop-up store at Botany Town Centre. Following a successful pop-up concept in the Westgate complex that led to a permanent site in July, the 600 square metre pop-up store has been curated by the Freedom styling creatives to bring shoppers the best in key room updates both big-ticket and small, as well as the latest in outdoor offerings for the BBQ season. Debbie Ridling,
managing director of Freedom Furniture NZ, says the retailer has a number of limited edition and new ranges it will offer up to the outdoor shopping precinct. “The Botany area has been on our radar for a long period of time, so we’re very pleased that this space has become available just in time for peak Christmas trading and the hot nights ahead.” The Botany pop-up store is open at 588 Chapel Road for the next six months.

Preet & Co purchased the offices from Harcourts Eastzone Realty, which was coowned by real estate veteran David Clifton, who is moving on after 17 years with Harcourts. One of the skills Preet prides himself on is the ability to recognise talent in people, and he is thrilled to be working with the team of sales consultants and property managers already established in the Howick, Meadowlands and Pakuranga offices. “They are a hard-working, passionate team and they do their very best by their clients,

which means they are a perfect fit for Harcourts Preet & Co.” It’s been a whirlwind of success for Preet since founding Preet & Co in April 2012. He opened the Harcourts Manukau office with a team of four people and then went on a recruitment drive for people to join Preet & Co. Within 12 months one of his team, Harsimran Singh, was named the “Rising Star” of Harcourts in Auckland, as well as runner-up for the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand’s Rising Star award.
By September 2014 Preet was ready to expand and he opened the Harcourts Otahuhu office. Two months later he launched Harcourts Botany. This year he purchased the established Harcourts Ellerslie office, and just this month Harcourts Howick, Meadowlands and Pakuranga. “All my team have incredible talent and truly want to give the very best service to our clients. It’s our goal to create clients for life by delivering a result which surpasses expectations every time,” Preet says.

By NICK KRAUSE Preposterous thievery has left a Farm Cove woman looking for answers and the return of much-loved statue. Maria Ross cannot fathom how thieves were able to nick the larger-than-life showpiece in front of her Fisher Parade home. The statue of Marilyn Monroe, a former Hollywood screen siren and model, stands at more than 1.8m (6 feet) and weighs around 80kg. Ms Ross, 54, said the “well-known and loved statue” was stolen from her home on either Thursday night (October 13) or Friday morning. “It would have taken two or more people to get her into a truck or trailer,” she said. “I’ve spread the word through social media, friends and family and I’m hoping that word will get around and she will be returned.” She has also notified police.
PERPLEXED: The stolen statue of Marilyn Monroe stands at more than 1.8m (6 feet). Photo supplied
The statue had become something of a neighbourhood landmark, it seems. “She was famous there for the last year,” Ms Ross said. “The neighbours love her. Everyone knows Marilyn. We have people stop and take photos with her. “I’ve met lots of the neighbourhood people thru
chatting on the street when I’m outside doing stuff to my place and it’s Marilyn that is the focal point.” As to her fascination with Monroe, she said she has always had a rock ‘n’ roll themed house. Her last home in Fratley Ave appeared in the Times. “I’ve always been into themes as I had one of the biggest Halloween houses in Auckland and you guys have also done some great stories on that,” she said. “I open my downstairs up to the public every year to raise money for Kids with Cancer. “All inside is rock and roll so Marilyn fit in great.” She is willing to forgive and forget if the statue is returned. “If they or anyone who has her would like to drop her back home, that would be appreciated.” Or they could contact the Times editor@times.co.nz to arrange for it to be picked up - no questions asked.

into the carving to achieve the final desired shape. After firing the piece in the furnace the jewellery is 100 per cent metal. This method offers a great deal of creative freedom in the designs he produces. The couple also put
considerable time into sourcing unique pieces from overseas countries that will not be found elsewhere in New Zealand. And they buy in locally designed jewellery from other New Zealand suppliers. The Howick store is their
only retail outlet, along with an online shop launched six weeks ago. They also wholesale some of their stock throughout New Zealand. David has been creating unique designs for more than 40 years, expressing his creativity in many mediums, including pottery, lighting, glasswork, acrylics along with his jewellery. He says he always strives to produce pieces that will be a long-lasting delight. The New Zealand environment is his inspiration and he uses the different mediums to play with light, colour, textures and form which gives the end product life. ■ More information is on David’s website: www. davidtaskerjewellery.co.nz.

Jewellery designer David Tasker is looking forward to presenting his unique pieces to Howick, and at affordable prices. He and his wife Jenny have opened a shop in Rices Mall, having moved on from their Downtown Queen Street store after the building it was in was demolished. “We are looking forward to meeting people and getting feedback about what they are looking for,” David says. He has designed a large proportion of the stock on show and recently started developing a new method of making his jewellery. This involves using extremely small particles of copper, bronz, silver and gold which he forms into unique shapes by hand. Most of the time is put

Equipped with their Gold Cards, Mr Eady says the ability to jump on a ferry and travel directly to Auckland will be a nice benefit for the residents, while the westerly side of the site will afford views over the Half Moon Bay Marina and to Auckland. “To find a good sized site in the middle of a residential mature suburb is not something we find every day of the week,” he says. “Our business needs scale to be able to run the village services so we need a site big enough for it. That’s why we’re excited.” Also, Mr Eady says, retirement village residents generally make good neighbours. “This is because it will be their home as much as if they were living anywhere else in Bucklands Beach. They don’t drive fast and, by virtue of their age, are very neighbourly.”

Cat survives ‘throw’ from moving car A
cat apparently thrown from a moving car is on the mend although mystery surrounds the incident and who the moggy’s owners might be. The cat was seen to be “ejected” from a light blue Suzuki Swift-type hatchback window as it crossed the Pakuranga Bridge heading towards Panmure at about 3:45pm on Tuesday. Nicole Robertson, senior vet at the Greenlane Veterinary Centre and Cattery, said a woman following the hatchback was heading to work when the incident happened. “He is now under our care after a member of the public witnessed the event and retrieved him off the road,” said Nicole Robertson, senior vet at the Greenlane Veterinary Centre and Cattery. Despite the ordeal, the male cat seems to be in reasonable

spirits. Miss Robertson said puss is a very affectionate neutered young/middle aged short hair grey/brown tabby. He is not microchipped. The cat’s rescuer, intent on saving the cat, was unable to recall how many people were in the vehicle and didn’t record the registration. She was also uncertain of the precise make and model of the car. “We x-rayed his hind leg. There’s considerable damage,” Miss Robertson said. “We put a splint on his hock
as there is bad ligament damage. He also has some superficial grazes.” The protocol with cats brought in was to hold onto them for a week to allow owners a chance to re-claim their pets. There’ll be no worries if no owner comes forward as they have been “inundated with offers” to re-home the cat. As to what happened, the vets are keeping an open mind. “The witness said he flew out the (car’s) back window. We’ve got to keep an open mind.” She said it could not be ruled out, for example, that the cat fell asleep in the car, took fright and leapt from vehicle upon awakening. “He’s obviously a well-loved cat; he’s very affectionate and trusting of humans.” ■■ Please contact the vet clinic if he looks familiar. Another low voter turnout, but up slightly from last election By Scott Yeoman The final and official local election results show voter turnout for Auckland was 38.54 per cent this year. This was up on the 2013 turnout of 35.5 per cent but was once again a far way off the 2010 turnout of 51 per cent.Like the overall Auckland result, the voter turnout for the three Howick Local Board subdivisions all rose this year from 2013, but were still low.The Botany subdivision had a 36.9 per cent turnout (+2.8 per cent), Howick had 43.1 per cent (+3.5 per cent) and

Campaign Pakuranga had 40.7 per cent (+3.4 per cent).Preliminary results excluding special votes show the national turnout was 41.8 per cent. This was up 0.5 per cent from 2013 and down 7.2 per cent from 2010. In Auckland, plenty of people left their vote to the last day, with around 18,000 votes hand delivered to ballot boxes on the Saturday morning before midday.

Auckland Council’s governance director Phil Wilson said the council’s aim was to show leadership by tackling head on the decline in New Zealand voter participation. “As the country’s largest local government with more than a million voters and an increasingly diverse and fast growing population, we have to address the barriers to voting.” He said Auckland Council will discuss the barriers to voter and candidate involvement as part of the government enquiry into elections next year.

Love caring for babies and young children? T
he Stems FROM HOME team is continuing to thrive locally and with spring now in full swing, they are looking to put the call out for enthusiastic parents with a passion for children to support local families with their childcare needs. Founded by teachers Stephany Wofinden and Emma McAlister, the home-based childcare and early childhood organisation has branched out beyond all expectations since its inception in 2011. Working on the premise that when educators are happy, children are happy, Stems invests abundant time and resources in its close-knit team. From the very beginning, educators are given support including initial nursery equipment, along with access to continued resource sharing and friendships. A big bonus for families as well as Stems members are FREE weekly playgroups which are diverse and varied, giving little ones and educators a chance to socialise and explore in a fun, encouraging, family environment. The highly sought-after weekly ‘garden-nature playgroup’ remains popular, as are the music and movement group, weekly pre-school sports and in Terms 4 and 1, little tots take to the water with pre-school swimming lessons organised and run by Stems. As part of the educators’ ‘home-
based’ individual programmes, the team has access to child first-aid training, regular evening learning workshops and social activities as well as public liability and statutory liability insurances – all for FREE! And if that’s not enough, educators are supported with an annual resource grant which goes towards more educational resources to help them better run the programmes built around their children’s interests in their own homes. “We have a real mix of educators from trained ECE teachers and mums with their own children, to those who have been involved in alternative careers who have decided to follow their passion and work with babies, toddlers and young children with the solid support (and proven reputation) of the Stems team,” says Emma. Offering a wealth of benefits for those with their own young families, this career path is a fulfilling and a life-changing one for all who embark on this journey. Embracing the traveller’s life
Bianca Brunschwiler, 24, and Brett Sweden, 27, have been travelling the world for four years and now have a strong following via social media. Last year Bianca furnished some fun reports from the Rugby World Cup in England. Here’s a letter from Ecuador.
B
ianca and I are New Zealanders born and raised in Howick. We are currently travelling the world and writing about our adventures online through our travel blog and Instagram account (www.kiwisoffcourse.com - @ kiwisoffcourse). Our main focus is sharing information about the destinations we have been, hopefully making it easier for other Kiwi travellers to follow. Our family and friends are our biggest fans. They are constantly encouraging us with our work and we are glad at least someone is reading it. It was originally set up to keep in touch with our family back home, then expanded to friends asking for advice. Now we have a lot of support from the Instagram community and travellers asking us questions about where to go and our recommendations at various destinations. We are so thankful that we have a lot of support from travel companies and the press lately, helping boost our followers to more than 8300 which has been very exciting for us! And it’s growing daily,
thanks to being recently featured on websites like Daily Mail and MTV. We 100 per cent recommend travelling as a couple. It is the best thing we have ever done. Sharing all these magnificent experiences together is something we can fondly look back on in the future when we are old and grey. That said, sometimes there will be friction. When living in each other’s pockets 24/7, you can step on each other’s toes, especially when you are as clumsy as me. It’s important to work together and pull your own weight, keep everything in perspective – you’re travelling after all, so take a good look around and take some time out every now and then, just have some ‘me time’ to keep fresh. We plan to return home hopefully around the end of January or early February. It will be nearly four years away from home, so we are really looking forward to spending time with our families and hanging out in our favourite country – New Zealand. No place like home after all. It won’t be long until we are off
again chasing the summer sun in our Asia trip.
We have three tips for all travellers: 1. Information is power. Learning about where you are travelling will save you lots of money, time, and hassle. It also helps you to have the direction to be independent and not miss out on something amazing because you simply didn’t know about it. 2. Learn to save. It can be difficult when we all have student loans, car repayments, and the trips to the pub every weekend. Pack your lunches, don’t shout rounds you can’t afford at the bar, and learn to be frugal with your money. These are all tips for before and during travel. 3. Living in the moment is essential. Enjoy the best part of your life with your own eyes. After finding your angle and snapping some great shots, it’s time to take it in and simply enjoy being on the top of an ancient temple and not at an office desk. Bianca and Brett
Village consults on its future Howick Historical Village is undertaking a strategic planning exercise to ensure that it is well placed to present Fencible and early settler history to the public of Auckland and national and international tourists. The museum, which opened in Lloyd Elsmore Park in 1980, appointed a new village manager last year. New President Rob Mouncey said: “With the appointment of museum professional Ian Day as our new village manager last year and changes in region’s museum sector with MOTAT and the Auckland War Memorial Museum developing their own future plans, it was timely that the village undertook a similar exercise.
“As is normal when undertaking a review like this, the suitability of the current branding and name is included as the media channels for the village to promote itself have changed dramatically in the last decade.” The review will also include updating the collections policy, visitor experience, restoration and conservation programmes and of vital concern future funding.
“A substantial part of the museum’s funding comes through a contract for services with the Howick Local Board and with the help our comparatively small staff and many volunteers, the village delivers a substantial level of public good to the Auckland region,” Mr Mouncey said. “To preserve what we have for future generations and realise the full potential of the village will take greater levels of investment than we have previously been able to get our hands on. “Following the internal preparation of the strategic plan including meetings with staff and the society members, we will be sharing our vision and goals with the public.”

CHILDCARE
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, October 20, 2016 — 13
IN THE HOME
FUN WITH FRIENDS Connections In The Home has been operating from Howick for almost four years now and is getting prepared for another great year as they plan for 2017! Co-owners Vicki and Sarah (pictured), have been friends and colleagues for over 25 years now and absolutely love what they do each day with Connections. Vicki and Sarah are both incredibly proud, passionate and excited about their business and the people involved – children and adults! They have the great pleasure of interacting with children, educators and families each day. Nurturing relationships as they grow within the Connections ‘family’ is important to both Vicki and Sarah and they love to watch both children and adults alike form strong friendships. They value getting to know Educators and families - it creates a team of support, fun and laughter and they see it as an absolute pleasure.
SARAH Everything I have learnt and experienced during my 25 year career in early childhood leads me to the importance of relationships. When our babies and young children feel safe and loved then the learning can begin through play, hands-on experiences and amazing environments. For the past 14 years I have seen this in action on a daily basis in home based care. It’s about the people, respect and love… and if the adults experience that too then it can only be of benefit to our children. This is our aim, our mission… and we LOVE it!’
VICKI When I think about what ignites my passion and makes me smile – it’s the young children that I have the privilege of working alongside every day. I love the way children play and explore their world, having the opportunity to grow and emerge into healthy, confident and independent young people. With over 20 years’ experience in Early Childhood education, I see children as our future, and our role is to educate them in a safe and nurturing environment and to provide a positive and a rich experience that develops their journey into young human beings. The relationship we have with children and their families are one of positivity, kindness, and compassion.
and stories) in Howick, Crazy Craft & Indoor Action Sports both in Pakuranga and ‘Little Kickers’ in Meadowlands. We also extend our programme by organising regular trips and outings that are often guided by the educators sharing the children’s interests! Our programme throughout 2016 has been so much fun so far with Term 4 under way… lots to look forward too! The team has started to plan for 2017 and we are so excited! Our FREE support for educators and families is available to all involved in the Connections ‘family’. The Howick based team of five includes four experienced and qualified early childhood teachers who work alongside the Educators to extend each child’s programme through home visits and regular outings, and a wonderful Howick based office administrator whose knowledge and experience is reflected in her support to both Educators and families. Our Howick based ‘Connections Cottage’ is an absolute haven and we enjoy music sessions, professional development, team meetings and lots of little visitors with their Educators who pop in on a regular basis to say hi, ask for advice and support or just sit with us for a while!
Considering your Childcare options? If you are looking for childcare now or for 2017, and you want peace of mind when you go off to work, then make contact with us… we’d love to support you in finding that magic person for you, your child and your family.

Wealth of legal experience

Settling into a first home can be complicated, but not for thousands of Howickians who have placed their trust in the experienced hands of James Donovan. The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan was established in 1969 and, through the years, it has become the preferred choice of families for generations. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving the difficulties they may have with property, family and business affairs, and know how they should best protectPage their assets 1 for their children and for their future.” The extremely competent team at this Howick institution also offers all-encompassing law services including trusts, wills, estates, matrimonial property, and residential and commercial conveyancing. Many know to come to this well-established solicitor for traf-

Local businesses recognise this long-standing legal practice as somewhere they can look to for reliable advice when complications arise from business activities such as taxation, trusts and leasing premises. There is virtually nothing these excellent legal experts cannot do or resolve; as James says: “There is no substitute for experience.”
Registered Legal Executive Leonie Hogg has more than 20 years’ experience in the legal arena. Together with the stellar support from Legal Secretary Lea Rogers, and accounting expertise from Lesley Haslip, the legal practice is well known for its invaluable advice and services to the community. hirty new terraced residences are to be created on what was formerly the site of the White Horse Tavern in Pakuranga. The new development, called East Link, is on Ti Rakau Drive. The three storey mixeduse development will have a selection of upmarket food and beverage outlets plus convenience retail on the ground floor, with roomy two storey terraced residences above. East Link terraced residences are just a convenient 200 metre walk from Pakuranga Plaza shopping centre with its full complement of retail facilities. The location is perfect to enjoy the weekly Pakuranga night markets which bring a vibrant and vast array of ethnic eating options to the locality every Saturday night. Prospective buyers of the off-plan East Link terraced residences can choose from a two or three-bedroom configuration - all with outdoor decks: ■■ A three-bedroom, two-anda-half bathroom residence with a total area of 106 square metres ■■ A three-bedroom, two-anda-half bathroom residence with a total area of 98 square metres
Don’t let yourself or any member of your family suffer needlessly with personal issues (anxiety, depression, etc.)
NO COUNSELLING – NO MEDICATION NO NEW AGE NONSENSE Consider there are over 450.000 people in NZ on medication for urban living: Spacious terraced residences in the East Link residential complex in Pakuranga - occupying what was the former White Horse Tavern site - are now on the market for sale. Prices for the freehold East Link terraced residences in Ti Rakau Drive will range from $769,000. Sales of the East Link terraced residence began on October 8 - with an on-site office open daily from 11am to 6pm or by appointment. The terraced residences are bigger than comparable apartment developments in the innercity – and have been designed to broadly cater for all buyer dynamics, including families,
singles, investors, first home buyers and “down-sizers”. Each East Link terraced residence will come with a covered carport in the gated upper level car park and secure environment positioned above the retail units below. A limited number of additional car parks are available for residents to buy for $30,000 each. Tenancies to occupy the street-level retail and hospitality sites are currently being negotiated and are expected to open concurrently with the handing over of the apartment keys to their new owners. East Link terraced residences are scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2017. The project is being undertaken by East Link Limited – a subsidiary of privately-owned New Zealand company Synergy Property Group.

Thanks Times
The Golden Jubilee celebrations at Howick Intermediate couldn’t have gone better. We had a mix of alumni from Howick District High School and the intermediate. Former student and holocaust survivor Bob Narev and his wife Freda attended along with an old school friend. The celebration assembly, high tea and the Mix n Mingle provided variety for people. We had ex-staff who came from other parts of New Zealand and even Australia. Thank you Times for helping us to get the word out there. The daughter of the first principal of Howick Intermediate, Helen Hamblin attended the Jubilee function after seeing your article in the paper. Her maiden name was Maxwell and she was a student from 1945 -1947. Her father was principal of Howick District High School at the time. Yolande Franke, Principal, Howick Intermediate
I’m disappointed
Fifty years ago this month as a seven-year-old I arrived, along with my family, to live at 24 Mellons Bay Road, Howick. I attended Mellons Bay Primary, Howick Intermediate and Pakuranga College. Our family sees ourselves as Howickians and have been involved CP0816-V6

in many organisations within the area. This week our family home went on the market. During the process of preparing the home for sale, my family have become very familiar with the proposed plan changes for the area in Howick between Bleakhouse Road and Park Hill Road (including our own property). While I am very much for looking after the unique feeling that the Howick Village and its surroundings has, I am astounded and disappointed at the message that is being put out by both the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association and your paper about these plans. For those who live in this band of properties affected, they will know that there is already a number of homes that are three storeys high and none have blocked the view from Stockade Hill. This campaign is scaremongering at its best. I don’t believe land in this area should be able to be cut up for four homes such as has happened in Moore Street, however, two homes at the proposed height will not affect any views from Stockade Hill. This is very valuable real estate, and if people take time to look at what is already there, they will see how a number of these properties have already been developed and, due to the
lay of the land, no views have been blocked. What really annoys my family is the statement in the appeal to the Environmental Court, submitted by the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association, which states all 65 affected property owners in this area are against the proposal. How would they know what we think? Not one member of this association has ever spoken to anyone from our family! I am aware of one other family in the affected area that has submitted their own appeal. Before signing any petition or giving any money to a campaign, I suggest people do their homework, take a walk on Stockade Hill, look at the properties already there and see that the proposed maximum height in the plan as it currently stands, will not affect any ones views. erforming the bhangra dance in front of a small group of colleagues and respected members of the community is harder than performing for 10,000 people at the big Diwali event on the weekend . So said community liaison officer Tineke Laing at the Diwali celebration hosted by Counties Manukau Police on Tuesday afternoon. Colleagues at the event included police officers sporting Indian outfits and turbans with some of the officers draped in a sari worn over their uniform). Members of the Corrections department had also turned up in Indian regalia. District commander superintendent John Tims addressed the event saying that the Indian festival of Diwali is all about reflecting on the past and looking forward to the future. $1.8b surplus a long way from GFC R

esponsible economic management is paying dividends with a second surplus delivered by the Finance Minister. The $1.8 billion surplus for the year to 30 June 2016 builds on a $414 million surplus in 2014/15. It is a huge turnaround on a deficit of more than $18 billion New Zealand faced five years ago following the global financial crisis (GFC) and devastating Canterbury earthquakes. The Crown accounts show tax revenue increased $3.8 billion during the year, outpacing spending growth of $1.6 billion. They also show we’ve got government expenses under 30 per cent of GDP, the first time since 2006, and net debt has stabilised to 24.6 per cent of GDP. We are now just one of a very small group of countries that has the Government books in surplus and a growing economy. Surpluses give New Zealand real choices. For example – paying down debt, ongoing investment in public infrastructure like hospitals and schools and better public services, and resuming contributions to the New Zealand Super Fund. And if economic and fiscal conditions allow we
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany
can begin reducing income taxes. New Zealand’s economic outlook is positive with consumer confidence growing, businesses investing, exports up, and tourism and construction booming. Our economy is growing at more than 3 per cent, with more jobs, and rising wages thanks to the entrepreneurship and hard work of New Zealanders supported by the Government’s economic plan and responsible financial management.
In the last three years 250,000, jobs were created and we now have the third highest employment rate in the OECD group of developed countries. The average annual wage is up 25 per cent since 2008, more than double the rate of inflation. Low inflation means wage gains going into people’ wallets rather than cost increases. However, we need to keep in mind that there are a lot of risks globally and that’s why it is important to get our debt levels down. If you borrow through tough times, you need to repay during good times so the Government is committed to maintaining rising surpluses so we can reduce net debt to around 20 per cent of GDP by 2020. Looking to next year, Budget 2017 will make positive longterm choices to strengthen the economy and our communities. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Feedback A battle of ideas
Editor’s note: Offensive? On the contrary, it asks the very relevant question why, with a clearly changing demographic, they are still under-represented. He goes further to suggest – on the basis of available Census data etc – that engaging these non-voting segments of our community will help get them to the ballot box. They all have a right to vote and be represented don’t they? We’re also not sure which blog you’re referring to.
Nothing’s wrong
I have to disagree with Scott Yeoman’s opinion (Times, October 13) about an unfair distribution of ethnic groups on Howick’s local board. Many of the ethnic groups he mentioned are new immigrants and are yet to fully understand the New Zealand way of life, family values, cultural values, environmental values, historical and political issues and complex Treaty issues as an example. Most
have come from different environments with quite a different perspective on all of the above issues. The point being these new citizens need time, a generation of it, before they can fully understand the implications of such a position of responsibility. All of the ethnic groups mentioned are highly intelligent people with a lot to offer and within a generation will have gained enough knowledge about our way of life to compete with and represent us not as Asians, Indians, South Africans, Brits or Aussies for that matter but very, very proudly as fair dinkum, genuine, all-round New Zealanders. The success of a multi-racial society depends on it. Gary Hollis Mellons Bay
Take part in the process
Re Howick representatives (Times, October 13). With the greatest respect, these people have been VOTED IN. Maybe these new immigrants need to participate in the voting process? Or should we go down the Auckland Council road and have nonelected (Maori) representatives? Personally, I think not and, just so I don’t get labelled as a racist (as is the PC line), my heritage is Ngapuhi. Alan Bowman Howick resident of 30 years
Democracy in action
In response to the article entitled ‘What’s wrong here?’ by Scott Yeoman (Times, October 13), I believe nothing’s wrong here. This is what is called democracy at work. Mr Yeoman seems to be suggesting that there is racism at work here and, by his reasoning, I would be a racist too as six out of my seven votes would be classed as European. However, nothing could be further from the truth. My criteria was simply this: I chose people who I viewed as having the same outlook and values as me – that is conservative, so I automatically cut Labour and Green Party from my list. Unfortunately for them, that meant quite a few non-Europeans fit into this bracket. This is what we call democracy in action and the Kiwi way no matter what your race. Elizabeth Edwards Howick
Europeans remain at forefront It was nice to read your article entitled ‘What’s Wrong Here?’ (Times, October 13) regarding the candidates running to represent the Howick Local Board and the over-representation of European candidates. I thought it was a very keen observation you made. When the leading mayoral candidates were invited to Massey University before the elections, I also commented to a colleague that if you look at the candidates, they are all white. My take on this is that the non-voters’ reason for not engaging is: (1) although easier perhaps than what they are used to in their home countries, the system of voting is unfamiliar; (2) if they voted a non-European, what chance would he/she have of getting through? It almost feels like an ‘old boys’ club’ where people would, of course, vote for the dominant ethnic group, in this case white. Although Botany, Howick, and Pakuranga are becoming more diverse in ethnic makeup, the European candidates remain at the forefront and will (continue to) do so unless, as you pointed out, there is more engagement with young people, non-European groups, and new residents to the area. Great article. Thank you for pointing it out to our community. Dr Lilia Sevillano Massey University, Albany

The opinion piece by Scott Yeoman ‘What’s wrong here?’ (Times, October 13) is regrettably top heavy on criticism of the successful candidate’s gender, age and race and ignores the respective positions on the issues that are important to the Howick people. It was noticeable that some candidates were absent from the campaign, no signs, no explanation of their position on the important issues affecting the community and a lack of face to face engagement. Sitting at a laptop abusing your rivals on a blog no one reads or cares about can’t beat wearing out shoe leather and having to answer prospective voters in a face to face meeting. Nor does hurling racist and ageist comments about do anything to inform the voters of a candidate’s position. Two non-European candidates represented political parties Greens and Labour that have never polled well in general elections in the Pakuranga or the Botany Electorates which make up the majority of the Howick Ward. Their political philosophy just isn’t popular in our area. Clearly, the voters of Howick agree that politics is a battle of ideas and that is the reason the candidates who won were successful. The focus by Scott Yeoman on age, race, and gender is offensive and belittles the voters of Howick. Dick Quax and Sharon Stewart

Dogs on the beach
Being within a few minutes’ walk to Mellons Bay Beach, I consider myself, family and the neighbourhood blessed to see daily this tucked away small beach overhung by flowering pohutakawa. But it’s spoilt by up to – some days - 30 dogs at a time having unleashed access, running up and down the beach throughout winter months. We and other locals avoid the beach altogether because of this unacceptable situation. And during the summer months we now want to enjoy this special beach with family and friends (and) have to work around dog-allocated access hours. With regards to the so-called access hours, (it) pretty much gives all the rights to the dogs. To all the owners, please follow the rules - no access during certain hours so at least we can have a quick dip in peace . David G Mellons Bay

Taiwanese cultural fiesta coming to Aotea Square The soothing sounds of strings are featured in the first of the Thursdays @ Seven spring concert series. Ensemble East (pictured), led by violinist Yid-Ee Goh, looks to the classical and romantic periods with music by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Beethoven’s first published works were trios for piano, violin and cello, which contain some of the composer’s most beguiling music. The third of these trios will be performed in the Ensemble East concert which also features Tchaikovsky’s rarely-heard string sextet Souvenirs de Florence, partly inspired by the composer’s visit to that city. The second concert features NZ Barok, a national treasure, truly stylish Baroque string ensemble presenting fresh performances of historic works. Many of these are inspired by dance rhythms, and all feature clear and intricate part-writing. Principal soloist is dazzling Australian violinist, Rachael Beesley. ■■ Both concerts will be at 7pm, Ensemble East on October 27 and NZ Barok on November 3, at All Saints’, Selwyn Road, Howick. Admission is by donation at the door.

rom early this year, Stella Lu, a resident of Flat Bush has been a part of the preparatory committee that is hosting the New Zealand Taiwan Day, a two-day festival at the Aotea Square, on October 22 and 23. As one of the major cultural festivals supported by Auckland Council, Taiwan Day provides an opportunity to experience an array of performances, food, music, folk dance, craft and indigenous culture. Ms Lu says that according to historical studies, the ancestors of the New Zealand Maori may have originated from Taiwan over a thousand years ago. They sailed their wakas through the winds and waves to reach this beautiful land of the Long White Cloud. Thus, Taiwan and New Zealand have long established an intimate connection. Residents of Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and Ormiston who are part of the Taiwanese Hwa Hsia Society, Taiwanese Women’s Association of New Zealand and Taiwanese in New Zealand Association Inc., are a big part of the festival says Ms Lu, one

Market growth slowing
Regional housing market
lthough the Auckland real estate market has paused for breath during the wet school holiday period the Eastern Beaches dwelling median price continues to rise, up 15 per cent in the year to September compared with the same time last year, according to latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures. The median is now $1.107 million compared with $965,000 the same time last year. However numbers of dwellings sold is down 35 per cent to 137 from 211 the same time last year. Median days to sell in Eastern Beaches continue to be static at 34. Over the past 10 years the average number of days to sell in September in Auckland has been 33 days. REINZ spokesperson Bryan Thomson says the New Zealand real estate market seems to be in a two-speed mode at present with Auckland pausing for breath ahead of likely new spring growth. “We are also seeing anecdotal evidence that first home buyers in Auckland are now favouring new builds as a way of getting finance in light of the new LVR restrictions and the ‘carve out’ for new home construction.” Auckland auction transactions dropped 13 per cent to 56 per cent of national auction sales, compared with a year ago, reflecting reduced

inventory levels. The QV House Price Index shows the Auckland market increasing 15 per cent year on year and 5.8 per cent over the past three months. Values are now 88.7 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007. When adjusted for inflation, values rose 14.5 per cent over the past year and are 60.2 per cent above the 2007 peak. However, QV says there are early indications the rate of growth in the market is starting to slow with the annual growth slipping 0.9 per cent over the past month. QV national spokesperson, Andrea Rush, says prices in parts of Auckland have stabilised since the new LVR rules requiring a 40 per cent deposit from investors purchasing existing house stock
were imposed. “We are also seeing a shift in demand from the investor housing stock to properties with higher density development potential which suggests some buyers may be getting the message that upward growth around existing town centres will eventually happen under the new unitary plan.” Activity in the upper end of the market, above $1.5 million, and in the new build market (where the 40 per cent LVR doesn’t apply) also remains strong and strong value growth continues in this part of the market. Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson says the combination of tighter mortgage lending restrictions and perceptions that residential property is
fully priced continues to slow Auckland housing activity. “In September new listings were down and sales numbers and prices were restrained,” he says. “With the arrival of spring, housing activity normally lifts, but it has not been the case this year. “Rather the market continued the trend which first showed in July of prices increasing at a much slower rate than in the past twothree years.” Harcourts chief executive Chris Kennedy says the traditional spring “wake-up” in the market is beginning to make itself felt with stock levels up slightly on August’s figure and that trend is expected to continue as warmer weather lures more vendors into the market.

Entertainment space for all
A
games room in a home is the perfect place to entertain young and old. Children will be able to use the space to play with their toys and create colourful crafts. Adults can make the most of the room by adding a big screen television and gaming console, or even a pool table. Regardless of who will benefit from the space, certain criteria should be taken into consideration when designing a games room.
Location and lighting
The basement is the ideal location for a games room. For optimal lighting, it should have at least one window to let in some natural light. Other options if this isn’t possible include installing pot lights and a dimmer switch. Paint in lighter colours to help accentuate the light. They will
make the room more feel more spacious. Massive and dark-coloured furniture tends to disrupt the flow of a room, so try to avoid these as much as possible.
Furniture and finishing touches Dividing the space into different activity stations is a great way to make the most of a games room. A cosy nook can be created for watching movies and playing video games, a kiddie corner with toys and costumes, and a craft station with a table, chairs and art supplies. It’s important to outfit each area with the appropriate materials. This means washable surfaces for creative undertakings, soft furnishings to protect against injuries during more rambunctious games, and comfortable furniture for lazing about.
DESIGN: Regardless who will benefit from the space, some criteria apply to all.

Decorating mistakes to be avoided when choosing A home decorator can be a valuable asset when it comes to decorating your home. However, undertaking a creative endeavour on your own can be extremely rewarding. Here are three common mistakes to be avoided when decorating your home by yourself.
The big picture
Choosing the right back-
splash for the kitchen or ceramic flooring for a bathroom can be difficult. The motif selected may look good on its own, but not so much once it’s laid next to hundreds of identical tiles. A good way around this is to print several larger images of the chosen design from the manufacturer’s website. Lay these copies down directly on the floor to get a better idea
of how the overall finished product will look. Don’t forget to choose tiles according to their intended use: Porcelain is more durable than ceramic and therefore better suited for high traffic areas.
It’s not all about money
Price shouldn’t be the only determining factor when it comes to decorating your home.
Equipping the bathroom with an inexpensive faucet is a good way to save money. However brass faucets, while more expensive, will last a lot longer, regardless of the quality of the water. Similarly, big sales and low prices are enticing when buying furniture. But making purchases without measuring first will cause headaches down the road.
Less is more
Keep it simple is a really good rule for decorating your home. An over-abundance of small elements can leave a room feeling tacky and cluttered. Instead, have one focal point to draw the eye’s attention and then complement it with a few light touches scattered throughout the room to add style and depth.

Growing plants upside-down in hanging containers is nothing new, but the idea gains in popularity every year thanks to its many benefits for the gardener and the plants. Many enthusiasts swear by this technique, which produces a hearty harvest with minimal effort and space required. The two most common species grown upside-down are tomatoes and cucumbers, but other vegetables, such as eggplants, beans and peppers, are also suited to this type of gardening. A variety of herbs and flowers also produce great results in a hanging garden. Hanging gardens are much easier to maintain than traditional ones. Since the plants are at eye level, there’s no need to bend over for watering or picking fruit. And you can say “goodbye” to tilling and weeding, as neither are required. Plants grown using this space-saving technique tend to be more vigorous and have better, stronger roots. Furthermore, their fruits don’t touch the soil, which reduces the risk of rotting and pest attacks. All you need to grow upsidedown veggies, flowers or herbs is a large container, a mix of soil and fertilizer and something to hang it all up with. Drill a hole around five centimetres in diameter in the bottom of the container. Stick the plant’s stem through the hole,
CONTAINERS: Tomatoes are a great choice for an upside-down garden.
from the inside of the pot, and cover the roots with soil. Hang it up somewhere that receives
enough sunlight, and voila! You’re all set for gardening success.

areas, wet rooms, or where exterior walls are exposed to the worst of the elements.” All East Auckland Painting Ltd., clients’ receive an on-site consultation and FREE, written, no-obligation quote so there are no surprises. A fastidious tradesman, Greg is proud of his team’s reputation for working efficiently and leaving everything clean and tidy at the end of the day. “Whether we are painting a ceiling, refreshing interior rooms or tackling a full exterior repaint, we take pride in our workmanship.” To give you house a facelift with a fresh coat of paint for Christmas, call Greg at:

As the spring to do list around the home builds up, refreshing the interior and exterior becomes a top priority. Naturally, a fresh coat of paint is often the way to go. But as now is the prime time for recreation, homeowners who prefer to enjoy their spare time relaxing may be better off leaving their painting jobs to the experts from East Auckland Painting Ltd. Greg Mustill employs an experienced team whose skill and knowledge are second to none. They offer a diverse painting service ranging from simple repaints of single rooms through to full interior or exterior work including doors, windowsills, surfeits and roofs. “In today’s working family scenario it so easy to let maintenance slide,” says Greg. “Unfortunately, when paintwork deteriorates it can downgrade the value of a home, and if you’re thinking of selling it’s a turn-off to buyers. “Peeling or grubby paint can make people wonder if there are bigger maintenance issues at stake. Also it is much more effective to keep on top of small jobs than put off maintenance until suddenly one is confronted by a big and costly bill to put things right.” Greg says now is the ideal time for painting houses, fences, garages and other buildings. “We tackle every job, no matter how big or small, with the same thorough professionalism, starting with proper surface preparation and undercoating then carrying through to the final topcoat and finish.

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, October 20, 2016 — 31
Sports bites Wins for Howick Softball Club The Howick Softball Club premier women’s side beat the North Harbour-based Roosters 7-0 at Rosedale on Saturday. This was the first game under their new coach Stan Doney. Meanwhile, the premier men beat Eden Roskill 4-1 at Rosedale on Sunday and the premier reserve men beat Eden Roskill 2-1, also at Rosedale on Sunday. This weekend the premier women and premier men are competing in the Bears Classic Tournament at Starling Park in Ranui.
Judo success The Howick Judo Club attended the New Zealand Judo Championships – held at the Auckland Netball Centre in Saint Johns at the weekend – and had plenty of success to celebrate. Macleans College student Koen Visser, 17, not only won two medals at the event, but he also gained his black belt at the weekend.
Results: Junior Men: Koen Visser (U73kg) won Bronze. Cadet Men: Koen Visser (U73kg) won Gold. Senior Boys: Ali Al-Ani (U32kg) won Silver, Niek Visser (U50kg) won Bronze, Alex Macmillan (U55kg) won Silver, and Amir Mahadi (U60kg) won Gold. Junior Boys: Willem HewitsonTownley (U45kg) won Gold. Senior Girls: Alessandra Bianco (U55kg) won Silver. Junior Girls: Jezzabella Bianco (U32kg) won Gold.

Kiwis lack playmakers I
t’s a shame the Kiwis rugby league team can no longer produce ball distributing forwards of the calibre of Ron Ackland, Kurt Sorensen and Mark Graham who were masters at setting up tries. Instead they have settled for tough guys who tuck the ball under one arm, barge into tackles and die with it. That is one of the reasons why Australia easily won last weekend’s Perth test 26-6, scoring five tries to one. It didn’t help either that coach David Kidwell left his most penetrative forward, Jason Taumalolo, sidelined for much of the second half. Blessed with speed, the powerful Taumalolo is a great talent. Unfortunately he is not going to reach his potential in the the Kiwi jersey unless he can find willing team-mates with the skill to put him into gaps with slick passes. That inability is also what stops Shaun Johnson becoming a truly great halfback in the mould of an Andrew Johns. Like Johnson, Johns was

a brilliant running halfback. Unlike him, he was also a superb ball distributer. With his deceptive swerve and snappy sidestep, the speedy Johnson has scored some of the greatest tries I have seen. But he is not the regular game-breaker he should be because he doesn’t have the confidence to back himself at crucial times. He also has the unfortunate habit of cruising sideways instead of beating defenders straight on. Which is a pity coming from a player so enormously gifted. Johnson’s tactical kicking falls far short of Australia’s Cooper Kronk and most other NRL premier halfbacks. That, and an inability to set up smart plays on the last tackle, cost the Kiwis dearly in the Perth test. Certainly they will need to improve dramatically to be competitive in the Four Nations tournament. Meanwhile the All Blacks are headed for a tier one world

Agnew’s Angle record 18 consecutive test wins when they tackle Australia at Eden Park where they last lost 30 years ago. It’s a record they deserve after a shaky first up first test against Wales in June followed by a succession of convincing victories against them, Australia, Argentina and South Africa. If a world team was to be named today, Dane Coles, Brodie Retallick, Kieran Read and Jerome Kaino would be certainties to start in the forward pack. Just as Aaron Smith, Beauden Barrett and Ben Smith would be named in the backline. Other candidates would include Sam Whitelock, Waisake Naholo and exciting youngsters Ardie Savea and Anton Lienert-Brown.

As a game-breaker, Barrett has been sensational both for his country and the Super Rugby champion Hurricanes. Retallick has probably succeeded the immortal Colin Meads as our greatest lock, just as the two Smiths are this country’s best halfback and fullback. Before the emergence of Read, both Buck Shelford and Zinzan Brooke had an army of supporters claiming they were our greatest No 8s. But Read’s lineout prowess and ability to steal ball from his own team’s kick-offs has given him the edge over both. With Ireland (twice), Italy and France to come after Saturday’s test against Australia, the All Blacks should extend their unbeaten run. The pity of it is that they don’t play England until 2018. However next year’s British Lions should be strong when they tour here although they face a tough itinerary. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

Rugby-mad Troy loves netball By Scott Yeoman
T
roy Korewha loves sport, all kinds of sport, and as far as he’s concerned, he will play what he wants. So when a teacher at Baverstock Oaks School in Flat Bush asked him in 2013 if he wanted to join the school netball team, he jumped at the chance, no questions asked. Three years later, the 10-yearold with the long locks is still the only boy in his team and is often the only boy in the game, or whole competition. But he doesn’t care. “It’s fine,” Troy says. “It’s just fun.” His team plays at the Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre (HPNC) at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Saturdays. Last year they got the runner-up trophy for their competition and this year they were first equal. Troy plays goal attack and he’s good at it. His team had the highest ratio of goals for their grade in 2016. He says he enjoys the busy nature of his role. “I get to run around more. I get into the mid-third and my [goal] third and I’m a goal shooter – I get to stay in the circle.”
Troy isn’t the first boy to play netball at HPNC – far from it. But his mum Sharlene says that there has still been a mixed reaction from other teams’ parents about Troy playing. “They do think it’s probably a little odd that there is a boy on the team but we’ve faced that. “I always say, don’t give up. I don’t let anything like that deter him.” She says for the first two years, Troy was the only boy playing in their HPNC competition and this year it was just him and another boy from Baverstock Oaks School, but they play in different teams. Troy is fully aware of the mixed reaction to him playing netball. The bright year six student has even had a few comments about it from kids at school. “They say it’s only for girls.” But his response to these kinds of comments shows you Troy is mature beyond his years. “I think stuff in my head but I don’t say it,” he says with a confident grin. He loves the game. He has team posters all over his bedroom walls and will be at Eden Park on Saturday to cheer on the All Blacks. But for now, Troy, who turns 11 this weekend, will continue to enjoy his time on the netball court. They won 35-0. There were even a couple of other boys taking part in the competition. Ms Korewha says Troy has always been well supported by his team and his teachers. She is proud of his devotion to the team and sport. Last weekend he was at Vector Arena supporting the Silver Ferns, face paint and all. “I love it that’s he’s stuck it out for three years and just gets out there and does his job,” Ms Korewha says. “He takes it really seriously. He’s committed to the team, never misses practices, and turns up on time.” And, she says, he’s made some great friends along the way. Email: scott@times.co.nz
