fter failing to contact the

owners multiple times, Auckland Council’s Animal Management team euthanised the dog called Karma because she was a pit bull terrier-type breed, unhealthy and unpredictable. So it’s hard to maintain composure when I meet the council’s Animal Management manager, Tracey Moore to find out how difficult it is for the people who have to make such hard decisions and how these decisions are made. This is an emotional area, Ms Moore says. “The job is so difficult and public perception involves strong opinions and emotions. It’s polarised. There are people who say dangerous breeds shouldn’t be allowed and the other extreme of very caring people who want to

save everything.” The role of the council, she says, is to follow the law. The Dog Control Act 1996 lists “menacing breeds” as the Brazilian Fila, Japanese Tosca, Dogo Argentino, Perro de Presa Canario and the “menacing type” American Pit Bull Terrier (including American Staffordshire Terriers). Auckland Council deems these dogs an exception and will not rehome them. It’s not surprising, Ms Moore says, that Karma, after being abandoned, mistreated and living on the streets for such a long time, would be fearful and defensive around people – “a horrible result of the circumstances”. There are so many mixed breeds such as the pit bull, she says, and some are clearly defined. But some fall in the middle, so decisions on these dogs are signed off

by animal control staff members. “It’s not ever easy. These decisions are not taken lightly. “I can’t think of another job that people will do when they look after a creature which is in the shelter for at least seven days. They look after the dog, feed it, exercise it and at the end know it is going to be euthanised. It’s hard on our people. “Karma was not very well so she was made comfortable and looked after. “I know many people disagree with the discrimination of breeds. A dog being a pitbull-type doesn’t make it a bad dog. But it’s a legal classification and the act directs that we measure by breed or by type.” Several of the animal management team are trained in a robust dog behaviour system based on industry best practice,

Ms Moore says. Dogs not claimed by owners and falling outside the “menacing type” classification go through a temperament test to decide whether they are eligible to be re-homed. Some dogs, Ms Moore says, because of their temperament, are not suitable for re-homing to the general population and not to families. However, sometimes they can go into professional work, such as in the Police or Corrections agencies, and they can be trained to work. A big effort is made to find homes, and in the past year, 98 per cent of dogs assessed were found permanent homes. “It’s the part our staff members love. There is nothing better for our people to see a dog come in, they look after it and see it going to a loving, forever home.” ■ This is Part I of a series.

stable condition. Police have spoken to the victim who was unable to identify the person who shot him. Counties Manukau East Police’s head of CIB, detective senior sergeant Kevin Tiernan, believes that the man was shot with a shotgun and a party at the bar had spilled out onto the street. “Police arrived at a very chaotic scene,” he said. “We

have seized three vehicles that are linked to our investigations and are reviewing CCTV footage. We are conducting a number of inquiries.” He said there were a lot of people outside the bar and there may have been fighting before and after the shooting involving various weapons. Surrounding vehicles and bar property were damaged

as a result of the incident. Bar management declined to comment. Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident and may have captured it on camera. A programme to change the way young people behave on the road is being boosted with funding to extend it to east Auckland schools. Road Safety Education offers a one-day programme called RYDA for senior high school students. It aims to change their thinking as drivers and passengers. To date, more than 36,000 students across New Zealand have graduated from the RYDA programme since its introduction in 2007. In

the same period the road toll in the 15-19 demographic dropped by 64 per cent. The Ministry of Transport released figures last week showing that 247 people were killed on New Zealand roads this year and had increased for the past two consecutive years. In 2014 the road toll was 212 and in 2013, 197. In contrast road toll statistics are down for youth. Auckland schools such as Baradene, ACG Strathallan,

and Kings Colleges are participating in the programme in Term 4. Last week sponsors BOC Gases and NZ Steel, with Rotary, committed to partially funding the programme for schools in the Eastern Bays area. Road Safety Education NZ programme manager Simone Randle says a fatal accident in Pakuranga involving a Year 13 student highlights the importance of teaching young drivers and passengers how to reduce risks.

Evidence suggests young people are most at risk of a serious crash in the first six months of becoming independent drivers. “But the loss of a single life is one too many,” Ms Randle says. “Every month in New Zealand on average, five young people aged between 15 and 24 years of age die on our roads. “These accidents are a tragic loss for friends, family and whole communities.”

European car show launched By Marianne Kelly

who’s who of the British and European car clubs in the greater Auckland area are collaborating on an event that will showcase the region’s classic ‘Brit and Euro’ cars. Representatives of more than 60 clubs are currently being contacted and are expected to participate in the show planned for next March at Lloyd Elsmore Park, opposite the Howick Historical Village. The idea for the event was the result of two car enthusiasts thinking along the same lines at the same time. Pakuranga’s Laurie Hayward and others from the Jaguar Drivers’ Club (Auckland) had discerned a need in the wider regional car scene for an event focusing on British and Euro-

pean vehicles. At the same time Howick’s Reverend Dr Richard Waugh, also a member of the Jaguar club, organised an informal car show at Lloyd Elsmore Park last December and the venue was found to be suitable for a much larger event. An inaugural committee meet-

ing was held last June and a number of officers from influential car clubs became involved. The committee has established a number of unique features that will distinguish the car show from others and result in it becoming an annual event. Eligible cars must be of British

and European origin including Mercedes, Aston Martin, Triumph, Mini, Jaguar, MG, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Citroen, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Porsche and Volkswagen. While the preference is for ‘classics’, all interesting cars will be welcome and can be in a range of conditions. Mr Waugh says the show is not a concours event. Entries will come from the greater Auckland region and non-car club members will be welcome to display their car(s) in a specially designated area. Entry will be free to the public with donations sought for an annual nominated charity. The 2016 funds raised will go to the Howick Historical Village which will support the event. Costs to run the show will be covered by sponsorship and any surplus will be carried over to

future events with no participating car club having any direct financial benefit. The Auckland Classic Brit & Euro Car Show organising committee is Rex Benns and Darryl Bretherton (MG), Paul Bradley and Andrew Wakelin (BMW), Ken Williams and Graham Collie (Mercedes Benz), Marion and Mike Clements (Triumph Stag), Laurie Hayward and Richard Waugh (Jaguar) and Philip Horrocks (Ferrari). The chairman, Reverend Dr Richard Waugh can be contacted by phoning 533-9400, 273-9044, email rjw@ecw.org.nz. The secretary is Marion Clements, phone 535-6213, email marionclements@xtra.co.nz. CLOSING

As part of our business profile series, the Times continues to thank those who have supported us over the years. This time we speak to Bruce Waller, the man on the go in Highland Park Shopping Centre

H

e may only have one leg, but Bruce Waller (right) does a lot more running around Highland Park Shopping Centre than most managers would. Now in his eighth year of managing the retail hub, like the hands on its iconic clock tower, Bruce does not like standing still. “I tried to retire but I’ve always been active,” says the 69-year-old with plenty of spring in his prosthetic step. “At one point I even drove buses! I thoroughly enjoyed it.” After a stellar career of launching and managing major shopping malls around Auckland and the country including 277 in Newmarket and Milford Shopping Centre on the North Shore, and the Golden Centre in Dunedin, it’s safe to say Bruce knows what makes a good shopping mall. “I’m known as the old man in the industry!” he says grinning. Born in Whakatane, the 69-year-old has travelled all over the country and Australia making a name for himself before moving to Botany to be closer to his current pride and joy. His effervescent nature shows in his interaction with both tenants and shoppers alike. “I’m very enthusiastic and a people person. That’s our point of difference at Highland Park. I’m big on walking about and checking on everyone instead of sitting behind big

ivory towers surveying what’s happening below.” Any problems are sorted out in a jiffy. “If my tenants have any problems, they see me there and then. We can’t let them sit on it and bottle it up – it just makes things worse.” And it’s this hands-on approach that has led to the transformation of a place once known as “noddy town” into a quirky, varied and evolving landscape home to a great many businesses from massage and beauty parlours, to dry cleaners, a plethora of eateries, health food stores and a supermarket. Bruce has hatched a number of plans for the centre in the coming months. “We’re going to have an undercover marketplace with about 30-40 craft and produce stalls that we hope will be up and running by June next year.” This is all in addition to a new building extension housing shops and office space which have all been leased. And with Christmas just eight weeks away, Bruce’s

unique ‘Santa’ idea will be in full swing soon. “We’re going to have Santas with their own real beards dressed up to the Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus, and Santa’s workshop themes. “Then we’re going to pick six lucky shoppers and on Christmas Day, Santa will visit them in their homes to give them presents under the Christmas tree.” What’s more, Bruce will ensure these three Santas will be available to community groups to hire for free. Along with a few Santa inflatable dancers and a few Christmas decorations, that will be the festive season all sorted. Importantly, Bruce is and always has been all about giving back to the community. “We lend our premises to the Justices of the Peace for free, and sponsor Pakuranga Rugby Club and the schools’ business ventures especially Pakuranga College. We also support the Howick & Pakuranga Community Patrol and we make our offices available for the community constables when they need it.” And that’s where advertising with the Times has been really helpful, says Bruce. “We are totally local and that’s why we’ve been very dedicated to the Times for all these years. “It’s a true partnership and we’re very community involved in every sense of the word.”

Art supports young sailors

News bites

By Rumer-Grace Archer

Motorists swinging out of holiday mode were faced with congestion during peak hour traffic on Tuesday morning with two crashes happening one after the other. A crash occurred at about 8.30am on the bridge blocking the city-bound side of the South Eastern Highway and a few minutes later, another crash involving three cars occurred near the intersection of Pakuranga and William Roberts Roads. No injuries were reported and police were called to the incidents.

B

ucklands Beach Yacht Club’s seventh annual art exhibition next month will raise money to support the club’s budding young sailors, some of who may represent New Zealand in the future. Graham Pettett, exhibition organiser and artist, believes that fundraising for the sailing academy is a worthy cause for this reason as the club has produced a number of world class sailors in the past including Olympic sailors Barbara and Bruce Kendall. The sailing academy’s learn to sail programme creates confident young sailors who spend most of their time on the water learning basic sailing and boat handling skills

before learning to race. Sailing academy administrator Sarah Jane Fairley says the kids are always eager to get out on the water and especially love getting wet. She hopes at least one of the kids will become an Olympic sailor in the future. Money raised from the club’s art exhibition will go towards funding the Sailing Academy’s junior learn to sail and learn to race programmes. This year’s art exhibition will feature 53 local artists and 170 paintings covering a wide range of topics, including work from former Pakuranga resident Lindsay Muirhead. The art exhibition will be held at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Ara Tai, Half Moon Bay from November 4-8.

Squawk, the Boogie-bird’ takes off As the well-loved Zoo Boogie characters boogie up a storm on stage this Saturday, one colourful new addition will spread its wings to join them. Fresh from their performance at the Salvation Army’s global conference in London, Howick children’s entertainment group Zoo Boogie is back on form with

a new show and a chirpy character by the name of ‘Squawk, the Boogie-bird’. Squawk is an elusive, purple-breasted bird voiced by Tom Wardle. Zoo Boogie master Blair Dale, or Zookeeper Dale on stage, says he is a bit of a maverick. “For the most part of the show he hides off the stage and pops up behind

me. He’s a little bit naughty and tries to lead the other animals astray,” he says. “Then at the end of the show Zookeeper Dale has a talk with him and realises he’s just lonely and wants to be part of the family.” Formed in 2011, Zoo Boogie was the brainchild of Mr Dale after seeing a performance by the Wiggles.

It has since become a popular fixture in Howick and around the country and is a registered charity. ■■ Zoo Boogie – The Good Choices Show will be staged at Salvation Army East City on the corner of Wellington and Waterloo Streets, Howick at 2.30pm on Saturday, October 31. What an offer to triumph over! This Halloween brings scary sights of well-endowed women in ill-fitting bras. But fear not, the talents of veteran bra fitters Judy Bruce from Lily Whyte and Sue McKeown from Triumph will banish all bra crimes to remain in the drawer until the

next clean out. Make a date with the good witches at Lily Whyte Lingerie next Tuesday from 9am-6.30pm – they’ll wave their wand conjuring special treats and giveaways throughout the day.

It may be Halloween this Saturday but it’s also NZ Bookshop Day! Of course, we’ll be celebrating the proudly independent Readaway Books, where all book lovers have regularly received their literary fix for decades.

Whoops! Last week’s caption named Peggy Lovell in our photo of the Pink Ribbon basket when it was actually Pat Kinnon – sincere apologies.

HAVE YOU FOUND THE ONE?

Readaway Books will also be hosting a meet and mingle with local authors on the day. Plus, pick up the All Good colouring in sheet and enter the competition to be in to win a local prize or $500 worth of Booksellers tokens!

Surplus another step forward

ami-Lee Ross

F

our years ago, following the Canterbury earthquakes and Global Financial Crisis, John Key and Bill English set a target of achieving a surplus for the 2014/15 year. The final numbers are in, confirming the Government’s books are back in surplus. This is a significant milestone and one we can all take great pride in. The $414 million surplus in the year to 30 June 2015 is a huge turnaround on a more than $18 billion deficit New Zealand faced in in 2011. It makes us one of the first developed countries to get its books back in a strong position following the Global Financial Crisis By setting a path back to surplus and running a clear economic plan to support growth, more jobs and higher incomes, our country is seeing more opportunities for New Zealanders and their families to get ahead. Getting back to surplus is an important part of building an economy that is far more productive, more efficient, and more globally connected than ever before. Our economy recently registered its 18th consecutive quarter of expansion to deliver annual growth of 2.4 per cent

in June 2015. We’ve also had 11 straight quarters of job growth, with 69,000 more jobs in the last year. The average annual wage is now over $57,000 for the first time – $10,000 higher than in 2008. We’ve recorded five years of positive household savings – the first time this has happened in a generation. Low interest rates are helping households and businesses as well as our high labour market participation and strong employment rate. We’re rolling out ultrafast broadband across New Zealand, investing in infrastructure, and in research

MP for Botany and development. We’re also opening up our country to more global markets through agreements like the Trans Pacific Partnership and Korea/ NZ Free Trade Agreement. The outlook continues to be for ongoing moderate growth delivering jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders. Providing we stick with the plan that’s working for New Zealanders we can build on the good progress we’ve made over the past seven years. Jami-Lee Ross Member of Parliament for Botany

Millions SPCA

Board to challenge the latest announcements by the Auckland planners that significantly reduce or remove planning protections in Howick originally afforded by the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan. Council planners have redefined the Single Housing Zone; changed policies in ways that were not foreshadowed in the Draft and Proposed Unitary Plan, which formed the basis on which residents could make submissions; removed requirements for open space safeguards and references to privacy; and no longer considers residential amenity value or special character as protections that should be included in the single housing zone. Earlier heritage protection for the city as a whole is also being removed. The current Residential Heritage 7 zone for the seaward side of Cockle Bay, Howick and Mellons Bay was removed in the Draft and Proposed plans, and was replaced with single housing zone development rules and a Howick East overlay to safeguard the existing 700-square-metre site requirement. Council now proposes to reduce the minimum size of section for development. Council proposes to provide revised planning maps on October 30. Those who have already made submissions then have only five working days to respond to the Independent Hearing Panel. We accept the need for Auckland City to accommodate increased population, and the need for some changes to previous District Planning provisions. But now we see Auckland planners removing safeguards that previously existed in the Draft and Proposed Auckland Unitary Plans

Where is the money going? Re: It’s a Dog’s Life. (Times, October 15). The SPCA only has six inspectors. Where do the millions of dollars raised each year go? I understand they have costs, but you would think if they can afford to advertise on TV and radio, there’s money in the kitty. But no, they keep asking and they take the money that can go to a smaller rescue (group) whose animal welfare standards are a lot higher than allowing a dog to be a life-chained dog. Samantha Green Email

Dog has voice

This dog now has a voice. Thank you so much for printing the article about the dog chained to the tree (Times, October 15). You have started a conversation, and I hope, awareness of this dog’s plight. I am horrified to read the letter from Jackie Henry saying that this dog has been chained to this tree for 11 months. I have had positive feedback from the article, and people have said this is totally unacceptable. In a perfect world, I think Jackie’s letter should be front page news. I will be ringing the SPCA tomorrow and I hope a lot of your readers do the same. Thank you again - you are giving this dog a voice. Christine Duncan Bucklands Beach

Planning problems

Council planners lose all integrity. The Cockle Bay and Howick Residents and Ratepayers Associations are joining forces to request elected councillors Quax and Stewart and also the Howick Local

Honouring and Celebrating Life

(PAUP), for instance through the policies and objectives of the Single Housing Zone. We have always contended that a number of these protections were inadequate, but now even these have been substantially removed. References to private open space and low density suburban residential character and amenity are no longer retained. People who made no submission because they relied on earlier versions of the plan, with associated safeguards, are now disenfranchised because they no longer have an opportunity to express their views. Add these changes to the initial proposals that Council staff be given delegated authority to approve non-compliant planning requests, even under the originally proposed rules, and our confidence in Council planners is now zero. This is a complete failure of natural justice. The changes must be challenged more widely. Howick risks losing all its special identity and character, with people overlooking each other in the same way as new properties at Flat Bush and Murphys Bush with only one metre side and rear yards, and reduced front yards. Property values will be decimated. The two associations wish both councillors and the Local Board to take a stand, and require council planners to stop making significant changes that cannot be supported by evidence of substantial community support, or challenged by those who until now had relied on proposed safeguards. Laurie Slee, chair of the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association Gayleen Mackereth, of the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association

Light Party for all hile there are talks of a newly discovered asteroid larger than a skyscraper that will dangerously whiz past the Earth on Halloween, fortunately there are more positive aspects to Halloween that St Columba Presbyterian Church is busy working on to make it an event to remember. For all those who find Halloween a bit spooky and scary, here’s a brighter and more cheerful alternative. St Columba Presbyterian Church on Ti Rakau Drive, Botany, will be hosting a ‘Light Party’ on Saturday, October 31, from 4pm to 7pm. Instead of dressing up as witches, ghouls and ghosts, children can come dressed as superheroes, princesses, fairies and cowboys.

party time: Senior minister, the Very Reverend Garry Marquand, left, and children and family ministry leader Alex Tracey look forward to hosting the annual ‘Light Party’ on October 31. Times photo Wayne Martin

The Light Party is a big step away from the negative connotation of Halloween. It takes the gruesomeness out of it. Now in its 11th year, there will be plenty of entertainment with carnival games, bouncy

castles, rock wall, face painting, rides, talent show and plenty of fun activities. St Columba children and family ministry leader Alex Tracey, who has been involved with the Light Party at St Columba for the last five years, says: “If you have kids, parents and grandparents please come along and join the party. “There is nothing like sharing the community spirit in a festive atmosphere. “For those who don’t have young children and live in the neighbourhood, please do come along. “We welcome not only the church people but also our community and neighbours. You can enjoy the food sold at the stalls; there will be plenty to eat.”

Good handbag imperative Helen Moulder and Sue Rider have collaborated to write a new show, Gloria’s Handbag which will play at Howick Little Theatre in the course of a New Zealand tour. The play opened in Wellington at Circa Theatre in March last year, and since then Ms Moulder has been touring New Zealand, New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, and has returned to New Zealand

for more performances. Gloria’s Handbag is the story of a 97-year-old who suddenly spends $11,000 on a designer handbag. The purchase not only meets with disapproval from her son, but sets off a series of unusual events which transform Gloria’s remaining days and enable her to send a message to the future. The play is the third Ms Moulder and Ms Rider have

brought to Howick Little Theatre, the other two being Meeting Karpovsky and Playing Miss Havisham. Ms Moulder plays all the characters in the magical mystery with music from The Magic Flute. Ms Rider directs the production. Gloria’s Handbag plays at 2pm and 7.30pm on November 7 at Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga.

RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015

ABs have the strength across the board

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, October 29, 2015 — 17

FOR ALL YOUR FOODIE NEEDS DURING THE RUGBY WORLD CUP Delicious platters, chips & dips, fresh rolls and bacon & eggs for those early morning games.

Times reporter Rumer-Grace Archer talked to former All Black Pita Alatini this week about the All Blacks’ winning game plan in the semis and why he’s not worried about the looming final against Australia determined they were and the boys definitely dug deep to win this one. It was quite phenomenal, especially as South Africa didn’t let them play the way they wanted to play. South Africa really likes to slow down the game and play to their strengths – the forwards. So the game became really physical rather than a faster paced game with lots of running.

t was a tense game to watch but in that second half, the All Blacks came back with a game plan. Focusing on attack and finding space, they brought the intensity they needed to take control of the field.I know I’ve said this before but, again, the All Blacks finished off their opportunities and this is really important. I think you could see just how

Unlike other teams who may have struggled with this, the All Blacks have flexibility and the skill set to actually play both ways. Their game plan became territory, so lots of kicking even if it didn’t always go to the right place. It put the pressure back on the Springboks. It was fantastic to see Dan Carter in form and again Brodie Retallick, Jerome Kaino and Ben Smith were quality players in that game. I’m actually not too worried about the final. Both teams definitely deserve to be there, Australia have played extremely well. I believe the All Blacks have the ability to win and they will come out with their best on the night. Their advantage is the strength they have right across the board. If they manage to improve some of their minor weaknesses there’s no doubt they will be outstanding.

sport. This is true of Argentina especially, with how they really tried to break Australia with an expansive, open, running game. As for the final, we all feel like the two best teams of the competition have made it through. While we trust Shag and are

backing our boys to take home the cup, we know that on Saturday they have a massive job to do. I have butterflies already. I can only hope the All Blacks can cope. ■ Bianca Brunschwiler is from Howick and lives in London.

We watched the semi-final game at the Walkabout sports bar – Aussie-owned and well-known for watching sports, especially rugby. The atmosphere was pumping as soon as we walked in, the bar was filled with South Africans and New Zealanders gearing up to watch the game and trading some friendly/competitive banter. It was really cool that both groups were so passionate and excited, capped off by both national anthems being drunkenly bellowed full of pride. Being an All Blacks supporter the pride comes so easy through watching the way they try to play. Ben Smith was always dangerous and Ma’a Nonu looked like he was being shot out of a cannon every time he went for a run. It has been such an exciting tournament watching the attacking-natured teams prosper can only be good for the

To make the satay sauce, whisk or blend the peanut butter with 4 tbs hot water, soy sauce, sesame seeds, ginger, garlic and sweet chilli sauce. Set aside. Cook the egg noodles as per instructions on the packet, then drain and set aside in the pot, covered in cold water so they don’t stick together. Heat some oil in a pan and when really hot add the mushrooms. Cook until just soft remove from the heat and set aside. Heat a little more oil in the pan add the chicken and cook until cooked through. Add back in the mushrooms, along with the drained noodles and lastly the spinach to heat through. Add salt and pepper if needed. Before the spinach has wilted too much, mix the sauce through and serve.

Colours for every new generation E

ach generation of people have their own preference when it comes to the colours they use to decorate their surroundings. The baby boomers – born from the early 1940s to the early 1960s – are extremely active and place high importance on pastimes and hobbies. They are looking to get the most out of life and aren’t afraid to surround themselves with comfort and luxury. The favourite colours of this age group tend to be more conservative and represent the traditional values cherished by this demographic. They use colours as a way of creating a relaxing environment that wards off stress. They like classic styles in positive colours. The X generation – born between the early 1960s and

early 1980s – are characterised by their flexibility, realism and go-getter attitude. They’re looking for a warm, comfortable ambience, and objects from

various cultural backgrounds play a big role in their decor. This generation prefers a neutral palette that’s offset by touches of Latin-inspired colours that make a rich and bold statement. They combine metallic shades with spice and cherry tones. They appreciate the soothing comfort of greens. The Y generation, described as the digital and Internet generation – born between the early 1980s and early 2000 are energetic, ambitious, independent and individualistic. They like darker colours, such as olive, khaki, brown, military green and dark blue. However, they also like to include the influences of special effects from technology and entertainment in the forms of luminous and complex colours.

How to jazz up your bathroom Rejuvenating the bathroom involves personalising it. Install a large, stylish mirror to make the room look brighter. It’s best to install lights on both sides of the mirror so a face is not obscured by shadows. It’s also a practical little trick for when makeup

is being applied in the morning. Hang a favourite picture on the wall or display an object that relaxes people. Opt for darker shades for both the floor and the walls. For a Zen style worthy of a spa, go with white, cream

or beige and add brightly coloured accessories. Choose a vanity with drawers, and install a pendant light. Choose a bath/shower combination rather than a bath and separate shower and opt for quality faucets made of solid metal.

Jag serves up modern opulence It was the oven door that broke the camel’s back for homeowners Jennifer Seed and Kerry Linkhorn. “The oven door wouldn’t close. It was pretty haphazard,” says Kerry. “You’d put something in the oven and you’d never know if it was going to cook. So we used to joke we couldn’t have a new oven until we’d replaced the whole kitchen.” The kitchen was just the tip of the iceberg, however. Living in a gracious century-old Mt Eden homestead in need of tender loving care, Kerry and Jennifer knew they had a mammoth task ahead of them. The two rooms adjacent to the kitchen were knocked down to create a living area that flowed onto the kitchen with light flooding in from ample windows and bi-fold doors leading to a sun-drenched deck overlooking the swimming pool. With a grand vision in mind, Kerry and Jennifer approached Jag Kitchens designer Liz Martin for the job. “We’ve been friends with Liz for a long time and wanted to work with someone we knew well,” says Kerry. Their conversations have translated into a tremendous transformation that is the result of friends working together on the same page.

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin but thanks to gentle guidance from Jag Kitchens, a grand old dame received a breathtaking makeover to be proud of.

generous rubbish inserts. Negative detailing adds an extra dimension to the already stunning space. Enjoying the finished product, Kerry and Jennifer couldn’t be happier. “It’s practical and feels like a kitchen. We had great faith in Liz and in her ability and she didn’t disappoint. “It’s a thing of beauty that we’re sure will continue to amaze people many years from now.”

Jag Kitchens’ designer Liz Martin (centre) with Jennifer Seed (left) and Kerry Linkhorn.

“It simply evolved,” says Liz. “The layout was pretty defined by the space and we just went from there.” Bright white cabinetry reflects the sunbeams and open shelving above the hob displays well-loved cookbooks, wine and other decorative items. But the real star of the show is the ivory granite island running across the room with a deep golden crackle effect. In fact, Jennifer liked it so much she decided to use it as a splashback. “I love the busyness of it and the randomness of the pattern which is what makes it unique. It looks like a picture. Who needs art when you’ve got such

a beautiful piece of art hanging on the wall?” says Jennifer. What’s more, it’s functional. “You can spill things on it, it doesn’t get damaged and you don’t see the mess.” Matching brown pendant lights made from recycled cardboard glow above the bench, bathing the kitchen in a warm glow at night. Equipped with a pull-out pantry, stainless steel bench,

induction hobs as well as brand new appliances (yes, a new oven!), the kitchen is every entertainer’s dream. The couple’s adult daughters who cook regularly love it too, says Jennifer. “It’s a special space that caters for more than one cook. We had 30 people here one night.” There is a galley-style work area along the island boasting ample drawers, an on-bench pantry, an extra sink and

Electricity competition growing By Marianne Kelly

A

t the end of last year, residential electricity consumers had the choice of 27 retail brands, backed by one of 17 independent retailers. It was a new high. Having new retailers enter the market is a sign of healthy competition which is great for consumers, says the New Zealand Electrical Authority (NZEA). New retailers can help raise consumer awareness about options and act as an incentive for existing retailers to offer competitive prices and improve their service quality levels, or else risk losing customers. The NZEA says growth of small competing retailers has an important effect on competition as they create a competitive fringe, which restrains and disciplines the behaviour of the traditional, bigger players. Auckland consumers had up to 21 brands to choose from, the most in the country. For example, new retailer Ecotricity entered the Auckland market offering zero emissions electricity in 2014, along with Tiny Mighty, Flick Electric and Opunake Hydro. Auckland was the largest regional market, with 29.2 per cent (510,474) of national residential connections. Average residential consumer demand in Auckland was 7,118kWh, the highest in the North Island. Competition between existing retailers is

strong. Switching rates remained high in 2014, while the average possible savings were low, indicating that consumers made the most of the savings available to them. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) conducts a Quarterly Survey of Domestic Electricity Prices (QSDEP). In 2014, the QSDEP showed a 2.41 per cent increase in the average residential electricity price for a consumer using 8,000kWh annually. However, this increase was

making the switch: Switching rates remained high in 2014, while the average possible savings were low, indicating that consumers made the most of the savings available to them. Photo supplied

made up of a 6.95 per cent increase in the lines component. These charges are set by Transpower, the monopoly company that operates the national electricity grid. Its prices are regulated by the Commerce Commission. There was a 0.57 per cent reduction in the ‘energy and other’ component of the residential price. These costs are set through the competitive part of the industry and are regulated by the NZEA. Ultimately, no matter how many brands are available, the

performance of the retail electricity market relies on consumers being willing and able to shop around for electricity, the NZEA says. In 2014, 385,596 consumers switched retailers. Just over half of all consumers have switched electricity supplier once or more in the last five years, and this proportion is increasing across almost all regions, the NZEA says. “It is encouraging to see consumers becoming more active and being more prepared to switch for a better deal. The increase in consumer awareness and activity means retailers offering more value can gain market share. In turn, this increases competition and we all benefit.” The ongoing ‘What’s My Number’ campaign evolved in 2014 from a focus on switching to checking. The campaign encourages all consumers to compare their options, whether or not they actually switch retailers. “Checking regularly that you are on the best deal by being active with your current retailer helps continue the competitive pressure in the electricity market,” the NZEA says. “We encourage everyone to check regularly, the benefits are real.” Close to 100 per cent (77%) of consumers believe it is worthwhile reviewing which provider can offer them the best deal, but only 30 per cent are likely to shop around.

Cowboy builder habits tackled

A

uckland Council has been highlighting examples of shoddy building practice to show how it is actively monitoring compliance with the Building Act across Auckland. Building Compliance Manager Ian McCormick says builders are given an opportunity to remedy poor work, but they must meet the standards of the building code or the council will not approve the work. “If it doesn’t meet the building code, it doesn’t get our sign off. We are very clear about this with builders and developers. “We’re called to inspect over 3000 construction sites a week. The majority of these are well run and any issues that we detect are minor and easily addressed. We have some outstanding building practitioners in Auckland. However, we are seeing an

increasing number of sites that suffer from a lack of effective supervision. “Given the high level of activity at present, we need to ensure developers and builders understand that there is no room for shortcuts, and that we will be actively monitoring their work. Auckland is in a period of high building activity, and so it’s more important than ever that we make sure the high standards required by the building code are maintained for the future. “It is not our intention to identify the sites or developers. But we are making sure that non-compliant work is remediated before any Code of Compliance Certificate is issued. “We’re doing this at a range of sites across the region. In all of the cases highlighted in our videos, remedial work is underway and being moni-

tored by our qualified building inspectors. “That means the developers have a chance to put it right, and we can all have more confidence that high building standards are maintained at a time of high building activity. “It’s important to note that the building code addresses how a building should perform structurally over its lifetime, not the quality of finish. “This is not something we are empowered to control. Therefore, as in all purchases of services and products, you need to select your designer and builders carefully.” Mr McCormick says Auckland Council has, for some time, been concerned about construction standards, and has embarked on a collaborative programme with key industry organisations to improve quality.

one with nature: Creating a Zen garden requires looking at the space as though it were a living picture. Photo blog.lingualift.com

Designing a Zen garden A Zen garden is all about simplicity: stone, wood, gravel and sand alongside dark green vegetation, all of it meandering and gentle. If you are dreaming of an intimate backyard in which to meditate and be at one with nature, a Zen garden is for you. But even if such a garden exudes simplicity and natural lines, nothing should be left to chance. Creating a Zen garden requires looking at the space as though it were a living picture. Existing elements must also be taken into account when transforming the garden. For example, stones can be added to the lawn to create paths that wander from the shade of a tree to a meditation bench, or to a pebbled dry garden that’s dedicated to the contemplation of a statue.

Water is essential in a Zen garden. It represents rebirth, peace and enchantment. So, whatever the size of the garden, think about installing an arrangement where water can trickle or circulate. A lily pond, waterfall or even a fountain will do. The vegetation should be dominated by shrubs and foliage plants. Flowering plants can be used but always discreetly – light touches of yellow, orange or white scattered here and there, nothing complicated, nothing flashy. One exception is the use of chrysanthemums. With their abundant flowers, skilfully placed chrysanthemums add incomparable splendour to a Zen garden. And a few hanging lanterns will diffuse some soft amber light after sunset.

Pocock poses the bigger danger T

he David Pocock-Michael Hooper axis poses the biggest threat to the All Blacks in their defence of their rugby world crown against the Wallabies at Twickenham on Sunday. Whereas the All Blacks matched the Springboks’ brutal physicality in their 20-18 semifinal win, this time they face an Australian team that has revitalised its scrum and has strike power right across the board. It is their speed at recycling ball which plays a major role in the All Blacks success story, with 34-year-old Richie McCaw being the turnover king for most of his illustrious career. He remains a gutsy champion and a great leader. However the younger Pocock and Hooper are a major threat because they are faster, with their speed allowing them to get

to the breakdown quicker. Australian coach Michael Cheika’s decision to convert Pocock from an openside flanker to No 8 was a masterstroke which played a major role in clinching his team the Rugby Championship when they beat New Zealand in Sydney. Although the All Blacks avenged that with a brilliant 41-13 Bledisloe Cup victory at Eden Park, it should not be forgotten Pocock was on the bench when Cheika made no fewer than six changes to his side. Sunday’s final should be a classic between the two best teams in the tournament with each capable of playing brilliant 15-man rugby. It was Australia’s success at the breakdowns and their rushed defence which brought them victory in Sydney before the All

Agnew’s Angle Blacks outclassed them in Auckland. In winning their World Cup semi-final 29-15 against Argentina, the Wallabies scored four tries and kept the Pumas try-less. Two of wing Adam Ashley-Cooper’s three came from perfect Matt Giteau skip passes. It’s Giteau’s experience, smarts and vision which has done so much to improve Australia’s ability to take the right options although the danger of Israel Folau has been diminished by an ankle injury. Fortunately, Daniel Carter has

timed his run to perfection with strong, confident games for the All Blacks in the playoffs against France and South Africa. Ben Smith has been magnificent, Nehe Milner-Skudder has blossomed and Sonny Bill Williams has made a huge impact off the bench. Jerome Kaino was back to his best with his try and bonecrunching tackles against the Boks when locks Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick mastered their formidable opponents. With Ben Smith winning man of the match honours, his team deserved their hard fought win upon scoring the only two tries of the match. Once again, when it came to the crunch, their defence was brave and accurate. With McCaw, Carter, Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith about to play their last test, the All Blacks

have the ability to send them off in style. But it is unlikely to be easy against classy opponents not lacking in self-confidence under coach Cheika’s one year reign. However Cheika still has a long way to go to match Steve Hansen’s amazing record as head coach of 47 wins, two draws and three losses. Not only does that illustrate the worth of Hansen and his fellow coaches but it says much for the character and composure of his players, led by the often wounded but seemingly indestructible McCaw. Going into his amazing world record 147th test, with the world title at stake, it seems only fitting he should be crowned king. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and novelist. ➤ More Rugby World Cup, Page 17

‘Wingless’ wows at karate champs By NATALIE BRITTAN

P

akuranga fighter Jase Smithyman has karate chopped his way to the top – with no arms. The 25-year-old man who was born with no arms earned a silver in the kata (pre-defined moves in a sequence) category and a bronze in the kumite (freestyle) category at the recent GKR karate national championships in Avondale. Drawing more than 200 competitors from all over the country including Wellington and Christchurch, the event was a success for Smithyman. “It was a lot of fun,” he says.

“I’m pretty stoked. I worked pretty hard. It was my first NZ tournament so I’m really happy to get some medals.” Having just picked up karate in May of this year, Smithyman credits his sensei (teachers) for his performance. “They’ve trained me really well and did an amazing job. They’re really selfless humans. They’ve adapted things that I’m allowed to do and made me move differently to everybody else.” The slim-built competitor says being quick on his feet was an advantage, dodging opponents who were bigger and taller than him, including one who was six foot four (nearly two metres) in

height. “He beat me in the end but I was really tiring him out.” Training at dojos (martial arts centres) in Pakuranga, Bucklands Beach and Manurewa six hours a week and more than 10 hours a week at home, Smithyman wears a yellow belt with an orange tip (7th kyu-ho). With the ultimate goal a black belt, he aims to enter more competitions in the meantime. “I’m hungry for it now. I’m going for a double gold next time!” He says the atmosphere of the competition was great. “I hope regardless of whether people get medals or not they’ll still compete. It was a really cool day.” Smithyman made waves earlier this year after his video shaving with his feet went viral and has appeared on the Paul Henry Show. People can watch his videos on the YouTube handle Wingless. Meanwhile other local fighters fared exceptionally well. Jessica Patterson won gold in the senior female open kata, a gold in the senior team kumite and bronze in the senior female open kumite. Zion Lee took out silver in the instructor division, kumite.
