he Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) is shocked that a Housing New Zealand counterappeal in the High Court leaves it having to find additional funds for its appeal to save Howick’s iconic Hauraki Gulf Views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve. HRRA has already paid a barrister several thousand dollars to lodge an appeal in the High Court against Auckland Council plan changes which would allow multiple 13-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Parkhill Roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill. Mrs Mackereth says the HRRA is shocked and feels “appalled that an organisation whose mission is ‘we provide high quality, subsidised, rental homes to peo-

ple in the greatest need for the duration of their need’ should be intent on enforcing the Government’s mandate of intensification of Auckland at all costs”. “It is grossly unfair that a state organisation, which has access to unlimited finances for court costs, would oppose a tiny volunteer organisation like ours merely trying to carry out the will of the people and preserve our Howick views for posterity,” she says. “We are frantically trying to raise money to pay the next bill,” Mrs Mackereth says. “We feel that fighting against this counterappeal will add to costs.” So far $6900 has been raised which will cover the initial costs, she says. “Now we need to raise $23,000 more for the next steps. The first of these are on October 14. “We have been told it could cost

r John Malcomson has tended to thousands of patients over four decades, has delivered babies who became patients and was general practitioner to four generations in a handful of Howick families. After 40 years as a GP in Howick, last month he left his practice for the last time. The first order of business? A much-anticipated holiday in Europe with his wife Cris. He estimates he has seen more than 10,000 different people over the years. Serendipity, in no small part, ensured the couple who came from the UK for a year-long adventure, stayed on a little longer. That was in 1974. Everything since, Dr Malcomson (69) said, is a bit of blur. It helped immensely in those early days that Cris was a nurse – “a typical Shortland Street arrangement” as he puts it. Cris is a Kiwi (her great grandfather Len - she thinks - Adams was a drummer boy in the Maori Wars). “She was doing her nursing OE when we met in Sussex,” he said. “She brought me to New Zealand for a year and somehow or other we got stuck.” Fresh from Birmingham, and yet to start their family, they found work relatively easily as they were able to pitch for locum medical positions as a doctor/nurse team. For a couple of years that took them to Riverton, 30km west of Invercargill, and to the Hauraki Gulf, experiences he now deems

“very educational”. “I’d seen things on Waiheke Island I’d only read in text books,” he said. “I was a young, green grad in a new country.” He recalls setting up practice in Picton Street, below the bus company in Crawford House, now a reserve. How he got there falls to timing. Cris’s father Gordon Menzies was an accountant for Drs Keith Simcock, Trevor Young and John Betteridge and he introduced the young Englishman to them. “Keith Simcock took me under his wing and organised a series of

locums in the area for me and that’s how we came to know Howick,” he said. Dr Simcock died a few years ago. Doctors Young and Betteridge still practise and remain friends. Starting at the practice, where he joined Dr Mike Hooper, came at nerve-wracking time. Just a few days later daughter Penny (now Peskett) was born. He visited Dr Hooper, 88, at a retirement village in Glendowie before heading overseas. Four decades has brought with it innumerable memories. For some six years he delivered

babies at the Howick Maternity Hospital, located in the same building as Gulf Views Rest Home in Selwyn Road. “I think I was still looking after one or two of those babies when I retired,” he said. The surgery has always been busy. “My list size would have been around 1200-1400 over the years,” Dr Malcomson said. “People come and go; they are born and they pass away.” Their practice was initially at 12 Picton Street, below the Crawford Reserve, where the bus company ➤➤Turn to page 10 once was.

It’s a robot revolution T

he annual interschool robotics competition between Howick College and Pakuranga College took place recently and created quite the buzz. Competition organiser and robotics teacher at Howick College, Francois du Plessis, said since the competition started in 2014 it has grown rapidly in popularity. “It almost seems as if there is a robot revolution underway, with more and more schools offering robotics as part of their coursework and encouraging their students to be innovative and pursue science and engineering.” He said the aggression and skill of the robots has improved over the years and the tasks that the robots have to complete change every year. “This year, robots were placed

in the competition ring and had three minutes to detect and to knock opposing robots out of the arena, without human intervention.

“The robots had to be fully autonomous, deploying sensors and complex algorithms to find the opposing robot, and at the same time staying in the arena

by detecting its edge.” This year the winning robot was designed and made by Aiyush Jani from Pakuranga College, who took home a Raspberry Pi mini-computer as the prize. On top of the “SumoBot” competition, there was also a line following competition for year 11 students. The students had to design and construct wheeled robots that were able to autonomously navigate their way on a series of complex tracks. The winning robot was the one that reached the other end of the track in the shortest time. The overall winner of the line following competition was Reuben Yu from Howick College, followed by Nageesh Sharma from Howick College and then Mikael Coupe from Pakuranga College.

Prime warehouse development rising in the heart of the East A

rare opening in one of Auckland’s most coveted locations is about to make its mark on the business community. Built on a sprawling 1.25 hectare site, 417 East Tamaki Business Park is a brand new development in the heart of East Auckland’s industrial precinct. Featuring 25 solid concrete units of various sizes, this highly sought after space is set to attract investors, small to medium sized owner occupiers and tenants. Developed by the family-owned National Asset Group, the business complex at 417 East Tamaki Road is in good hands. Director Greg Large says it was a matter of seizing the opportunity to create a freehold offering in a predominantly lease-only market within the densely built East Tamaki area. “In this location it is rare to come across a vacant piece of land in a light industrial zone of this size, so we saw a gap in the market to create brand new light industrial units.” As major transport investment from the Government continues to pour into the East West Connections project, the location has never looked better. “It’s close to a strong residential catchment and boasts easy links to main arterial routes of Te Irirangi and Highbrook Drives. It’s a truly unique opportunity within the East Tamaki corridor,” says Greg. Boasting easy access in a modern, secure and gated compound, all units come with high roller doors, ample parking, and a dedicated devanning area for ease of loading and unloading containers and trucks. Greg says demand has been overwhelming. “We sold out Stage 1 (more

than 50% of the units) within a month before even putting a shovel in the ground.” With rents rising and interest rates at an all-time low, now is the time to act to secure this limited opportunity, says Greg. “The cost of land and construction is increasing, and chances such as these are diminishing day by day.” Only four units are being released in Stage 2. Plans have been approved, consents have been granted and earthworks have begun, with the project slated for completion mid-late 2017. Established for more than 20 years, National Asset Group will bring this latest venture to its

portfolio of successful achievements which include residential and commercial developments across Auckland. The group was founded in the 1990s by Greg and his father, Terry, who comes from a background working with some of the nation’s most respected developers. Having served many local owner operators, the company is well-tuned to the needs of its target audience. “We’ve designed it with small to medium businesses in mind. Locals who want to work closer to home will find this a very attractive proposition,” says Greg. “There’s a huge shortage of this product for small to medium

sized business owners looking for freehold ownership opportunities.” Investors, too, set to gain from this clean, open space with low vacancy rates across the district. “The demand for quality premises is outstripping supply and the strong competition from neighbouring units put landlords in a strong position to reap the rewards of rental growth over a number of years.” Close to the suburban beaches of Howick, Bucklands Beach and Half Moon Bay, the units also support recreational lifestyles and hobbyists, creating a home for motorhomes, boats and classic vehicles. In line with a family-friendly

lifestyle, a large, purpose-built childcare centre has taken up the flagship approximate 3000m2 site fronting the development. Business is booming in this quarter, and just a glance at neighbouring firms from local outfits to multinational corporations will confirm that East Tamaki is the place to be. “The opportunities are endless,” says Greg. “We foresee a great future for prospective buyers and tenants and will work hard to deliver and exceed their expectations.” To join an elite group of discerning buyers who have staked their claim in 417 East Tamaki Business Park or take a tour through this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, call: Bayleys Mike Mainkovich, 021 779 117 Marty Roestenburg, 021 943 517 Knight Frank Michelle Kennard, 021 162 5063 Josh Franklin, 021 990 174

monthly column designed to inform and enlighten on various Cosmetic Medicine topics, with Dr M Morunga of Face Doctors Botany and Remuera. This months column is on the Vampire Face Lift®

QUESTIONS: Q: What is the Vampire Face Lift®? A: The Vampire Face Lift® made famous by Hollywood and Kim Kardashian represents the greatest advance in cosmetic medicine this decade. Q: How does it work? A: The Vampire Face Lift®? is a combination of FDA approved Dermal Fillers and Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP which the doctor skilfully places into areas of the face to rejuvenate, lift and brighten. Q: Tell me more? A: Dermal Fillers are hyaluronic acids or carbohydrates, we already have this everywhere in our skin, but they diminish with ageing. PRP is naturally occurring, to get we take blood from the arm and centrifuge it, separating out the straw coloured component. The straw coloured fluid is called Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP, this PRP has concentrated growth factors that stimulate tissue, blood vessel and nerve growth when injected. When PRP is combined with Dermal Fillers we see new tissue growth that lifts cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionettes, thereby reducing lines and wrinkles, and because there is an increased blood supply, skin texture and colour also improves. nce upon a time – a little alien arrived on earth – he grew up with a loving family and learnt to walk and talk. But, as he grew he started noticing that the people around him did things differently. They were all – well a little bit weird. They said things he didn’t understand and wanted to do things that were really awful, such as – going to crowded places or eating at restaurants where the food smelt strange with people who talked too loud. He started to wonder if he had been born on the wrong planet. But he hadn’t – he was a human boy with Asperser’s syndrome and that little alien is me. Asperger’s syndrome is a disorder where the brain is wired in a different way to the “average person”. It is estimated to affect around 31 million people on this planet. We sometimes

like to call ourselves Aspies. So, what is life like for an earth dwelling Aspie like me? I’m just as smart as everyone else but can find everyday things quite challenging such as understanding and reading social situations, dealing with crowds and loud noises and managing what experts call “special interests”. This little alien can have trouble coping with loud noises. When I started school I found the school bell, well, terrifying. The average human just thinks of it as a noise to remind you that maths is over. To me it felt like big hands reaching into my brain and squeezing it till my eyes popped out. In order to cope I had to develop strategies. I was told exactly when the bells would go so I could cover my ears instead of losing my

eyeballs. While aspies can find some things hard, we also often have special interests that can make us really good at something. When I was young, I was obsessed with branding; my first words were ‘Vodafone’ and ‘Telecom’. I used to pay heaps of attention when brands would change so when ’Z’ bought ‘shell’ and started to re-brand, I would beg Mum and Dad to drive past every day to check on progress and researched it constantly, I still love brands but my main interests are computers and gaming. Steve Jobs had many Aspie traits, AND an obsessive interest with computers. We all know how that turned out. Planet Aspie has lots of heroes who succeeded because of their obsessions – like Temple Grandin with animal rights and Clay

Marzo (one of the world’s best surfers) and many other musicians, scientists and entrepreneurs of our time. Now that I know a little bit more about my Asperger’s, do I still feel like I was born on the wrong planet? I would probably say that earth is growing on me. Tony Attwood (a clinical psychologist known worldwide for his knowledge of Asperger’s Syndrome) says Asperger’s is like being left handed in a right handed world and I’m learning how to cope on a planet that’s different to how I would like it to be all the time by learning strategies and trying to grow in courage. We are all so different in our own unique ways and I hope that through sharing my story, we can learn to help each other and accept one another’s differences because, just maybe, everyone has a little alien in them after all.

Theatre doors open A special arrangement of a light-hearted New Zealand band composition written in the 1950s will be a highlight of a concert presented by the St Andrew’s Big Band which will swing into Marilyn Bakker action tonight at the newlyrefurbished Uxbridge Theatre. No! No! No! was composed by the late Albert James Arthur, later re-arranged, played and recorded by the Don Hunt Orchestra at The Music Studio, BBC Television, London in 1995. Recently his daughter Marilyn Bakker, a local author and follower of St Andrew’s Big Band, looked at a way of providing a new arrangement for this enthusiastic young band to play. The preparation of all the parts for each of the individual band members was completed by Ryan Youen, an acclaimed music preparer and orchestrator. Mrs Bakker says her father, who died in 1999, had a tumultuous upbringing and grew up into a romantic, sensitive and introverted person. Ecstasy and melancholy, physical pain and suffering, happiness and tragedy, poverty and relative richness were facets of his life. But, she says, he retained hope and the belief that the world was a beautiful place and expressed this through his music and poetry.

Outgoing Auckland Mayor Len Brown makes his final visit to Howick before the 2016 local body elections.

Tidy village spruced up for summer events Howick village has been tidied up for spring thanks to a crowd of enthusiastic volunteers. September 24 was Town Centre Tidy-up Day in the village and a large number of volunteers turned up to work under the guidance of the Manukau Beautification Trust. Jenny Foster, Howick Village Business Association (HVBA) manager, says Barbara Carney and her team from the trust are “amazing at these tidy ups and

left the town looking great.” Outgoing Auckland Mayor Len Brown was on hand to meet the volunteers who were treated to a late barbecue lunch as a thank-you for their efforts from the HVBA. As spring weather takes hold, seasonal producers are returning to the Saturday Howick Village Market with fresh strawberries already on the tables. They’re coupled with favourites such as oysters, fresh fish, and avocados.

Today in New Zealand 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The number one cancer amongst women, everyone will be impacted somehow with breast cancer – a colleague, a friend, a family member or you. If it seems more common, it is a true phenomenon. While researchers don’t know exactly why, it is thought more breast screening, an ageing population, later childbearing, increased obesity as well as increased alcohol intake amongst women may be contributing factors. Many women think they are at low risk if there are no family members with breast cancer however, 90-95% of women diagnosed have no breast cancer in the family. Despite increased detection the good news is less women are dying from breast cancer. This is a result of better awareness and earlier detection. But we can do more. According to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation 30% of eligible women aged between 45 and 69 aren’t even enrolled in the free breastscreening programme. Mammograms are extremely useful but can miss cancers too. Any lump in the breast is important and needs to be investigated with a matter of urgency. Women of all ages need to have a good chat to their doctor about breast screening as breast cancers can occur at any age. Keeping fit and slim and consuming less alcohol may reduce your risk. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Make it your mission to have a breast check, enrol in the Breastscreen programme by phoning 0800 270200 or encourage someone else to do so. A friendly dental centre with extended hours

With Dr Zhuo being fluent in Mandarin, the team at Kilimanjaro Dental Centre can communicate in over 10 languages.. Together with registered specialist orthodontist, Dr Prashant Zaveri, the team covers comprehensive services from general dentistry to orthodontics. Michael adds saying that another big plus is “Anita is very good with children. We have a very supportive environment at the practice.” The centre is ACC registered and WINZ quotes are given as well. Kilimanjaro Dental Centre is contracted to the Ministry of Health to provide free dental care for adolescents up to the age of 18. The centre also provides free dental care to patients referred by the Auckland Regional Dental Services – the community or school dental clinics. The big plus about the dental centre is that it is a family practice located in a great neighbourhood with plenty of parking. “With the same people looking after you over the last 13 years there is a sense of comfort and you don’t have to tell your history. We know it,” says Dr Zaveri. A word of advice from Dr Zhou is don’t put off your visit to the dentist for later. “Treat the problem in its initial stage to save you more pain and money,” he urges.

Taking the day off to go to the dentist, can be a pain. There are not many dental practices that offer the convenience of flexible hours. Patients now have the option to enjoy extended hours at Kilimanjaro Dental Centre located at Kilimanjaro Drive, Northpark, thanks to a very capable and professional new addition to the team, Dr Michael Zhuo. Qualified from the University of Otago in 2012, Dr Zhuo has worked both in Auckland and in Thames. Having attending to farmers, office workers and stay-at-home mums, Dr Zhuo has worked with a wide range of patients, fitted into the role very easily at the Kilimanjaro Dental Clinic. The friendly, young dentist who puts patients at instant ease took on a lot of responsibility from day one, says long time owner of the clinic Dr Anita Zaveri who had to fly to the US almost immediately after Dr Zhuo joined the practice. “We share the same mindset and working philosophy,” she smiles saying. Michael who is full time with the dental centre, also works on Saturdays from 9am4pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays till 7pm, depending on the requirements of the patients or if there is an emergency that needs to be attended to immediately. “This is very convenient for patients who are aware that they can be attended to after hours as well. “He also does Intravenous Sedation (IV) for really nervous patients,” she says.

Spicing up the classroom skills By Marianne Kelly

D

esire Truter was an early adopter of computers back in the days of floppy discs. But she only used things she found useful rather than embracing all the bells and whistles. So it’s significant that the Edgewater College English teacher has been awarded the NEXT Foundation Expert Teacher Award for her studies at the Unitec Mind Lab. She recently completed her post-graduate certificate in applied practice (digital and collaborative learning). The award recognises her commitment to up-skilling herself in order to best equip her students with skills needed for 21st century careers. Ms Truter came to New Zealand from South Africa 16 years ago. With 34 years teaching experience behind her she came to Edgewater College as a relief English teacher and has remained there. “I heard about the Mind Lab course and its innovative teaching ways. I was always looking for ways to spice up the subject. English can be dull and boring,” she says. “It all sounded so new and difficult and slightly scary. My knowledge of the technology was limited and it wasn’t a walk in the park because I was out of my comfort zone. “But I was confronted with all these different ways of using the technology and it opened up a new world.” Since finishing the course last April Ms Truter and her students have been exploring innovative ways of using technology. An example is a traditional study of a novel including the plot and the characters. The challenge she put to them was to create a study

guide and online activities they would provide to fellow students in remote rural communities who would have more limited devices. They produced a multimedia project. Among the tools they created were a website, Kahoot games, power point presentations, U-Tube mini movies with clips that explained content and electronic worksheets. “They went to town on it,” Ms Truter says. “It was a new way of teaching a novel. Rather than taking notes about stuff thrown at you, this was learning by doing. I didn’t restrict them. They created interesting information about the novel and they loved it.” She says the face of education is moving forward with the teacher’s role to guide students about how to use the technology. Parents, she says, are wary about online dangers. “So we have constraints, teaching our juniors digital safety and the teachers monitor them closely. We have a firewall of things they can’t go into. “Within those parameters we encourage them to explore outside the classroom.” Ms Truter says she intends

kg

to continue her study for a Masters in Applied Practice next year. “It will give me academic clout such as for publishing things or creating new programmes. It might teach me a few more things to make the classes more effective. This is all about my students, but I also love learning things for myself. “The kids are brought up with the technology, but this is making learning fun for them,” Ms Truter says. “They don’t get to learn with technology all the time. “Classroom work has been with good old books and paper. But these approaches in the classroom have been an interesting innovating for them and me.She says she’s encouraging her colleagues to use digital technology in the classroom as much as possible. “We can’t be still working in the old school way. We need to bring it in whether we like it or not.” ■■ Launched in 2014, NEXT Foundation plans to invest $100 million over the next 10 years to create a legacy of environmental and educational excellence for the benefit of future generations of New Zealanders.

or the second year running students at Macleans College Hillary House have raised a large cheque for the Himalayan Trust to help recovery from last year’s devastating April 25 earthquake in Nepal. Last June the children of Kiwi icon Sir Edmund Hillary, Peter and Sarah, received a $12,000 cheque, the most the House had ever raised for the Hillary family’s Himalayan

Trust. Recently the House presented $11,000 to the trust which was the most it had ever raised because last year’s donation included $5000 from a school-wide mufti day. Because Sarah and Peter Hillary were in Christchurch taking in part in the tractor drive from Piha Beach to Mount Cook fund-raiser to restore and conserve Sir Ed’s hut in Antarctica, this year’s

cheque was presented to Prue Smith, chief executive of the Trust. She spoke to the students and showed them pictures of work underway in Nepal. This year’s fund-raising was again the result of motivation by Year 13 student, Jessica Russell who encouraged fellow students to remember that the recovery in Nepal would take a long time and not to forget the people there.

“When (Dr) Jack (Lin) and I moved to Fencible Drive six months ago we leased the building to Crawford House and they’ve had their signage on it for several months. They needed the extra space.” The obvious differences in medical practice revolve around more sophisticated technology. In the early days, his wife would field the calls and if she needed to contact him on his rounds would phone a patient’s home. “It worked because it had to,” he said. “Mobile phones make it easier to keep in touch with people, computers have enabled us to keep much more sophisticated medical records, medical imaging, laboratory tests and so on are much better than when I first graduated,” he said. “I remember the first ultrasound scanner arriving at the maternity teaching hospital in my final year. The experts

could see a baby. All I could see was snow. Now we can tell the gender of a baby from a very early stage.” One thing that has stayed the same since the days of Hippocrates and will never change is that patients are individuals with their own personalities, hopes, aspirations and fears, he said. “This is what makes medicine, particularly general practice, tick. It makes the job challenging, frightening, exasperating, interesting, stimulating, heart-warming and professionally rewarding all at the same time.” The memories are many. “My wife Cris worked with me for 18 years in Howick as our practice nurse. She retired two years ago to help our daughter with our grandchildren,” he said. “We’ve always enjoyed working together and managed to separate our working from our domestic lives.” (Daughter Penny, in How-

ick, has three children and son Ian, in London, has two). He will miss the collegiality and the daily buzz of work and intends keeping up those friendships. “It goes without saying that I have enjoyed a very happy professional life with Jack Lin and our dedicated professional, nursing, managerial and reception staff. I know I’ve left behind an excellent team in good heart.” Part of his legacy will be setting up East Care and the East Health PHO 28 years ago with a cohort of doctors - who are good friends to this day – Dr Henry Doerr, Dr Betteridge, Dr Young, Dr Bruce Kidd and Dr Graeme Kidd among others. “I’m really pleased with that. We started off as amateurs and became professional medical directors.” Apart from travelling, he wishes to do more tramping, cycling, amateur photography and astronomy. And there are the grandchildren.

Farewell to you Dr Malcomson Dr Henry Doerr has been a good friend and colleague to Dr John Malcomson for many years. Dr Malcomson has finally retired, having worked full-time as a Howick General Practitioner since 1977 (although he worked in various locums in Howick practices the year before as well). Says Dr Doerr: “A longstanding joke, if you will, which John is heartily sick of, is that I always note that, as he’s a few months older than I am, and as he started in General Practice

two weeks before I did in Pakuranga, John has always been the older and more experienced doctor between us. “More importantly, his patients will affirm his competence and compassion and John has always loved the challenge of keeping up to date, being particularly active and interested in Continuing Medical Education. He also was involved in the foundation of East Care (now 28 years old!) and served several terms as a director, including a term

as our Chairperson. “He is also very well read, with a particular love for science, especially physics and astronomy, and a deep appreciation and love of classical music. He used to be a fine longdistance runner and has loved cycling but now he prefers day tramps and we look forward to more adventures along those lines with his increased free time. Not surprisingly, he is a family first sort of fellow with two adult children and five grandchildren.”

New take on timber suits kiwi lifestyle K

iwi indoor/outdoor lifestyles are resulting in a swing back to hard flooring and a company started as a oneman band 22 years ago is positioned well for the trend. Steve and Nicole Heald own and manage Just Hardwood Floors which has a show room and warehouse in East Tamaki. They are one of a few companies that offer solid timber flooring options, such as traditional tongue and groove or parquet timber flooring. But they have shifted their focus with the trends to prefinished engineered flooring. “People are heading towards engineered timber flooring and laminates,” Nicole says. “They are better suited to the indoor/ outdoor lifestyle and laminates are a more durable surface to live on. “The engineered timber flooring market has really taken off and the demand is huge now. People have a better understanding of what an engineered timber floor is.” Steve trained as a timber flooring installer and went out on his own in business 22 years ago and it was only eight years ago that he came off the tools. These days he’s the hands-on general manager. The van he started out with has given way to a showroom and warehouse

Steve and Nicole Heald

and Steve and his fully-qualified team take special pride in training apprentices. “He’s one of the guys,” Nicole says, “and has been on the tools so he understands the work.” Currently the company is made up of 11 people including seven installation staff who travel nationwide. Not many companies offer solid timber, engineered timber and laminate flooring, Nicole

says. Solid wood is a traditional hard flooring option, she says, but more expensive and some types can be incredibly difficult to source. As a result, their focus has changed to the engineered products. The company now imports its own engineered plank called Euro-PRO which it coats with its own range of polyurethanes and oils from Italy, still allowing for a customised job for each client. Euro-PRO is a 20mm thick plank with a 6mm top layer of oak and a 15mm plywood backing system. The company can pre-coat the flooring at its East Tamaki-based warehouse or do a traditional site finish. “Alot of people still go for a classic look, in the natural warmer tones as they tend not to date,” Nicole says. “But a timber or a laminate floor adds warmth and ambience and suits peoples’ indoor/ outdoor lifestyles.” Just Hardwood Floors has been a regular Times advertiser since the day Steve opened the company doors. The association has provided a solid marketing presence but, Nicole says, times change. As it shifts to a national focus and technology changes, web-sites are becoming the way forward.

Tourism growth for New Zealand

COUNT DOWN: To date some 24.4 per cent of Auckland’s eligible voters have returned their ballots and that number is likely to swell rapidly as the cut off looms.

T

ourism is big business in New Zealand and winter 2016 has seen record numbers of visitors spending the most they ever have throughout the country. Every region showed an increase in visitor spending over the last year with Auckland growing by 7 per cent to $6.7 billion. To have sustained such strong growth into and throughout the winter months is confirmation that New Zealand can be a successful holiday destination all year round. Statistics New Zealand recently reported that in the 12 months until the end of August 2016, visitor arrivals in New Zealand reached a new all-time record of 3.36 million – that’s up a significant 11 per cent compared with the year to August 2015. This increase was particularly driven by visitor arrivals from countries such

round a quarter - 24.4 per cent – of Auckland’s eligible voters have returned their ballots and that number is likely to swell rapidly as the cut off looms. It’s now too late to mail your vote to ensure it arrives by the deadline for receipt of all votes in the local body elections of midday Saturday, October 8. But you can still vote. To make it as easy as possible to have your say on who leads Auckland for the next three years this is what you need to do: Find out about the candidates – go to showyourlove.co.nz and do your own research and comparisons of what the candidates’ thoughts are on key issues or read the booklet that came with your voting document Read your voting document carefully. Make your choices for mayor, ward and local board councillors (and in some areas licensing trusts) by ticking the boxes. You also need to vote for district health board members by a different system – the single transferable vote. You number the candidates in order of preference.

Campaign

showyourlove.co.nz has information on these candidates too. You still have time. You can: Drop it into a ballot box at your local library or one of nine service centres or if you are in Britomart on your way to work you can deliver it to the Love Bus – you’ll spot the painted kombi van and giant love heart parked at the Queen Street end Check the handy interactive map to find a post box or library ballot box on http://showyourlove. co.nz/howtovote#map-section Return your vote by slotting it into a giant heart shaped ballot box at libraries at Orewa, Takapuna, New Lynn, Britomart, Manukau, Pakuranga and Pukekohe. ■ If you are not on the electoral roll you can still vote if you enrol by 4pm Friday, October 7 and register for a special vote. Call the Electoral Office on 0800 922 822 for more information.

as China, Australia, the United States and Malaysia. Visitor arrivals are forecast to grow by 5.4 per cent a year to reach 4.5 million visitors in 2022, up from 3.1 million in 2015. This is good news for local businesses and the economy as a whole. However, whilst it is a positive that more people are coming here to visit, it is also important to provide funding and infrastructure to help support communities maximise their tourism growth potential. Within the Government, John Key has taken on the role of Minister of Tourism himself – that’s how important he views tourism for our economic future. He recently announced that the Government will invest $20 million over four years to further support tourism across New Zealand.

ami-Lee Ross

MP for Botany He also stated that the Government is making $8 million a year available to boost innovation and productivity through the Tourism Growth Partnership. This initiative focuses on driving strategic changes required to overcome constraints to growth in the tourism sector. It invests in infrastructure and innovative projects which in turn aim to lift the value of international tourism. The tourism sector is continuing to perform well each year and provides a substantial boost to our economy. As locals, we already know this New Zealand is a world class experience for everyone. Sixties years come to life at RSA concert American music to the fore

T

he Howick RSA was packed with excited people hungry to hear the music hits of Creedence Clearwater Revival last Saturday night. It’s amazing to think that in 2016 locals are still enthusiastic for the huge catalogue of songs made famous by Americans John Fogarty and CCR back in the late 1960s. And, from the first song played by Bad Moon Rising, a mighty fine Kiwi CCR tribute band and appropriately titled, the floor at the Howick RSA was full of dancers. It stayed that way all evening as Bad Moon Rising delivered an authentic CCR experience, rolling out all the classics, including Proud Mary, Born on the Bayou, Down on the Corner, Suzy Q, Fortunate Son, Green River, Who’ll Stop the Rain and Bad Moon Rising (twice). One of the highlights was when the crowd was encouraged to sing to the rafters the lyrics to Midnight Special, a song originally written back

Adventurous violinist Anne Akiko Meyers performs one of America’s newest and innovative violin works with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) at its next Bold Worlds concert series. This will be New Zealand’s debut of American DJ and composer Mason Bates’ energetic Violin Concerto. One of the world’s most celebrated violinists Meyers is known for her passionate performances, deeply poetic interpretations and commitment to commissioning new works. Bates describes her as “incredibly fiery and virtuosic” saying she “can float a melody in the most natural musical way”. The concert will open with Steve Reich’s 1986 work Three Movements. The popular minimalist composer describes this work as sound palettes inspired “by the changing lights as clouds move slowly across the sky”. Continuing the American theme, Chicagoborn conductor Fawzi Haimore will perform his debut with the NZSO, leading Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No.9 From the New World. ■■ The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will present its Bold Worlds concert at 7pm on October 7 at the Town Hall, Central Auckland.

n enticing selection of top entertainment will continue the celebration of the newly-refurbished Uxbridge Theatre. Renovation of the former Presbyterian Church is part of stage two of the $6.4 million redevelopment of the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre in Uxbridge Road, Howick. The festival continues on Friday October 14 with the return of comedian, writer, columnist and television presenter Urzila Carlson. With six sold-out solo seasons at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival behind her, she will be joined on stage with funny man Nick Rado, a multi-award winning presenter, producer, writer and stand-up comedian. The following night, Saturday, New Zealand’s dream team of female vocalists, Lady Killers, including Tina Cross, Suzanne Lynch and Jackie Clarke, will take to the Uxbridge stage. The group’s sound crosses genres from pop, R&B, jazz, gospel, country to a whole lotta rock and gleefully name-checking iconic artists such as Queen, The Beatles, Neil Young, Neil Finn and Dolly Parton. The following Thursday, October 20, Miho Wada will present Miho’s Jazz Orchestra which she formed in 2011. It’s been described as one of the most entertaining jazz acts in New Zealand. Miho will bring an energy packed pocket-sized orchestra to Uxbridge with its special brand of uplifting, feet-tapping tunes mixed with melancholic, romantic melodies. Their unique sound combines Afro-Cuban flute, J-Pop, and stylish contemporary jazz with a pan-Pacific flavour. The festival will close on Friday October 21 with Nathan Haines’ first performance at Uxbridge. He will join guitarist brother Joel Haines for an evening of genre-bending original material with an electrified band featuring Michal Matryniuk on synthesisers and keyboards, Cameron MacArthur on bass and Stephen Thomas on drums. Create waterefficient gardens Spring is time to get back into the garden when the temperature is rising and things are bursting back into life. Whether planning a big garden or some potted plants on a window sill, making smart choices when selecting plants and their placement and watering techniques means you can create a garden that thrives in dry weather. Watercare says a ‘waterwise’ garden will have a positive effect on the water bill and offers some simple tips to reduce the garden’s water requirements.

Plant wisely

Many things influence a garden’s water requirements. But an easy way to help reduce the amount of water needed is choice of plants. A local garden centre can help with selection of the right plants for a garden, as well as advise about the best time to plant them. For example, make sure to plant vegetables well before the summer heat so they can establish a deep root system to access moisture deep down in the soil. Tomatoes and squash

are especially quick at growing such roots.

Plants that do well in dry conditions Spring is the best time to re-seed bare patches of lawn. Consider droughtresistant lawn seed mixes that contain varieties of perennial ryegrass and fescues. Be aware that some varieties of grass are designed to dry out and go yellow in summer. They will recover in autumn. It’s also better to let grass grow a little longer in the summer. It will stay greener than a closelymown lawn and need less watering over dry periods as it strengthens the root system and shades the root zone. Plants that do well in dry conditions include salvia, succulents, clivia, libertia and arthropodium. Factors influencing the need for water in the garden include soil type. Clay soils absorb water slowly but are prone to compaction. Sandy soils do not retain water well, but are easier to work. Some plants require a high volume of water to stay healthy and looking good.

utalitarian look: Expose raw materials, pipes and electrical wires for an industrial style. Photo supplied

Update decor with an industrial interior design

I

ndustrial style has taken home decor stores, showrooms and retailers by storm in recent years. Characterised by its exposed pipes and bricks, wood and metal surfaces, and vintage furniture, this trend has brought an undeniable touch of flair to homes. The industrial interior design style replicates the utilitarian look of abandoned factories that were eventually converted into unique and creative living spaces. Emphasising the use of materials from yesteryear, this trend incorporates industrial furniture, old handpainted signs, worn couches, brick

walls and ferrous metal to define its decor. In addition, building materials are exposed, windowpanes are huge, cement tiles cover both the floors and the walls, and electrical wires are visible—anything to reproduce that raw and unfinished look. Industrial interior design typically lends itself well to living rooms and kitchens. Relax comfortably in an area outfitted with worn leather couches, iron shelving and decorative elements worthy of any respectable second-hand shop. Or prepare meals surrounded by

high metal stools, low-hanging pendant lights and big bay windows. Chances are this style will make its way to the rest of the house, for example finishing the bathroom with exposed brick, or baring the support beams in the bedroom. The nuts and bolts of industrial style is to use the right materials in the design, such as weathered wood, metals like iron, zinc and copper, as well as brick and cement in their most basic form. Lighting is another priority. Be sure to install big windows that let in a lot of natural light as well as glarefree light fixtures.

to consider all eventualities, and make sure it includes a dispute resolution process.”

Matters the syndicate agreement should cover off include:

• What happens if one partner wants to sell before the others? • What happens if different partners are investing different amounts? • How will any maintenance and operating costs be divided? • How will any capital gains or losses be divided? • How will the mortgage be structured and repaid? • Is the group buying as a company, an individual or tenants in common? Mr Kennedy says it’s about having all bases covered.

“In the end you’re in a partnership, and while they can start off smoothly, partnerships can turn bad very quickly if people disagree. “But, despite the need to be thorough and transparent about your agenda in setting up a property-owning syndicate there is still a lot of merit in using this method to gain entry to the property market” he says. The best way to set up a syndicate for joint property ownership, Mr Kennedy suggests, is to limit the number of people involved and to give it a fixed lifespan that everybody agrees to. “The more people who are involved the harder it will be to keep everybody on the same plan,” he says. “I’d suggest two or three is ideal, or perhaps two couples. “And by agreeing to a fixed period of time you can focus on reducing the mortgage as quickly as possible, maximising your equity, so you’re in a position to make purchasing your own property your next step. “The longer you stay in a shared ownership agreement the bigger the likelihood that peoples’ plans will change.” Buying that property, he says, is the hardest thing to do.

orming syndicates is being suggested as a way for first-home buyers to get a foothold into heated property markets. Chris Kennedy, Harcourts NZ chief executive says buying property in conjunction with a group of others is a common structure in the commercial property world, where groups of individuals often pool resources to purchase properties. “There’s no reason why it shouldn’t also work for residential properties,” he says. “We’re already seeing a rise in the number of home ownership partnerships between parents and their children, to assist the younger generation into their first home. I imagine, as key markets around the country remain heated, we will start to see more groups of individuals working together to get that first property.” The trick to a successful property syndicate, he says, is doing research and making sure of a water-tight partnership agreement so there is an agreed course of action should any problems arise or circumstances change, Mr Kennedy says. “As well as making sure you know and like the people you’re buying with, you need

The Community House is administered by the Board of Howick & Pakuranga Community Houses Inc, with support from Auckland Council and the Howick Local Board. The Howick & Pakuranga Community House Board is currently in the planning stages to revitalise the playground at the rear of the building. It is this playground that over the years has helped many preschoolers to explore, climb, gain confidence and make new friendships before they move onto the nearby kindergarten and then to the primary school which is located just next door. Big game against Makos Three Pakuranga United rugby players have been picked for Auckland’s important home game against Tasman tonight. With only a couple of weeks left until the Mitre 10 Cup semi-finals, Auckland has a lot on the line against the Makos at Eden Park. Sam Prattley will start at prop and two of his Pakuranga club mates, James Lay and Ben Nee Nee, have been named on the bench. Pakuranga’s Joe Edwards is still unavailable due to injury. Auckland beat Otago 54-17 on Saturday to keep their Mitre 10 Cup dream well and truly alive. Auckland coach Nick White said the win was a big confidence booster for the team. “It was really important that we played well because in reality we hadn’t put a performance out all year. “It just showed when they get the detail right, play to the structure and back themselves, they can play some bloody good footy.” There are only two games left before the semi-finals and White said Auckland need to win tonight’s home game and collect some points to give themselves a chance to make the semis. “Tasman are in the same boat as us, they need to confirm their top four place as well so the match will have a bit of heat in it.” Auckland is currently tied for second on the table with Taranaki – both with 27 points – and Canterbury is leading with 35 points. Counties Manukau (25) and Tasman (22) are not far off the pace. Auckland’s last game before the semifinals will be against Taranaki in New Plymouth next Thursday. ■ The Auckland v. Tasman game will kickoff at 7.35pm tonight at Eden Park.

Lienert-Brown dazzles S

unday’s 36-17 win against Argentina in Buenos Aires was not a great All Black test but one 21-year-old international rugby rookie Anton Lienert-Brown will never forget. For during it he proved he doesn’t only deserve to be there but could be for many years to come, as either a second-five or centre who runs and tackles well, takes smart options and offloads beautifully. With so many All Black stars withdrawing from international rugby after last year’s World Cup, finding suitable midfield replacements for Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith was always going to be the selectors’ most difficult task. Sonny Bill Williams and Malakai Fekitoa looked the most likely candidates had not SBW opted for the Rio Olympics sevens where he suffered a bad Achilles injury. With Charlie Ngatai making a strong claim with a brilliant Super Ruby campaign for the Chiefs until sidelined with a serious concussion, consistent Ryan Crotty slotted into the second-five berth where he has been better than solid. joining the injured ranks after a fine game against Wales in the June Dunedin test, Fekitoa became the regular centre. But while he did offer strong defence, he failed to create tries with his pass in the manner of a Conrad Smith. Given his chance on Sunday Lienert-Brown took it magnificently, scoring the first try and assisting in three others to complete an outstanding performance. With Joe Moody and Liam Squire sin-binned and the All Blacks regularly penalised in an atrocious second half,

although he risked disqualification for hitting his opponent after he’d already dropped him in the third round. However having shown no heart for the fight after Parker’s speed and power decked him four times, Dimitrenko was lucky his purse was not withdrawn. It was an impressive showing of speed and power by Parker, who has set his sights on a world title fight and is now ranked first in the WBO and IBF rankings behind champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua respectively. At this point with Fury likely to be stripped of his titles, Parker’s promoters’ preference is a December WBO title bout against No 3 ranked Mexican Andy Ruiz in Auckland with Joshua expected to defend his IBF crown against veteran Wladimir Klitschko in London. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

there were few chances for the visitors to maintain their momentum when dynamic No 8 Facundo Isa led the Pumas brave fight back. Another rookie to impress was 120kg, 23-year-old lock Patrick Tuipulotu who added power to the second row in concert with Brodie Retallick and combined with PJ Perenara to make a bone-crunching, try-saving tackle. The lively, much improved Perenara was another to relish getting a start after playing second fiddle so long to the classy Aaron Smith. Having clinched the title after just four rounds, the All Blacks should complete the Rugby Championship by beating South Africa this coming weekend after Morne Steyn scored all the Boks points in their 18-10 defeat of South Africa. Meanwhile speedy young Auckland centre Rieko Ioane continues to press his claims for an end of year tour of America, Ireland and France, having scored six tries in his last two Mitre 10 games. It was great to see boxer Joseph Parker in such devastating form when demolishing giant heavyweight Alexander Dimitrenko in Manukau on Saturday night

Baseballers to USA Four local baseballers are this weekend off to Arizona in the United States, where they will be showcasing their talent in front of hundreds of college and professional scouts. Kyle Anderson (16), Dylan Irwin (19), Elliot Johnstone (18) and Kazuma Nakano (17) will be in the southwestern US state for about two weeks taking part in the Arizona Senior and Junior Fall Classics. The New Zealand invitational team is made up of 20 Kiwi ballplayers from around New Zealand and Australia. The Arizona Senior and Junior Fall Classics, created in 1995, are held each year and give mostly North American players the opportunity to demonstrate their ballplaying ability in front of top baseball scouts from across the US in the hope of signing a college or pro contract. The Arizona Classic events also give young players the opportunity to compete against top competition from all over North America, as well as against top players invited from countries around the world.

The events were started by Seattle Mariners international scout Ted Heid and his family. Baseball New Zealand chief executive Ryan Flynn said these young New Zealand baseballers will probably not get a better opportunity to play in front of this number of scouts in their lifetimes. “Opportunities like this tournament don’t come around often so it’s important for these players to prove there is plenty of baseball talent in New Zealand – for themselves and the programme as a whole.” The team’s head coach, Baseball New Zealand development officer Dan Tan, said: “We see American collegiate baseball as a great pathway for our players, and this showcase allows them to play in front of a large number of recruiters at once.” The next two weeks will be nonstop baseball games for the Kiwi athletes and the team will also take on local junior colleges and play against older players who have already been recruited.

Meyer ready for fight L

ocal Brazilian Jiu Jitsu star Brandon Meyer is currently training six to seven times a week as he attempts to defend his Pan Pacific title in Australia next month. The 12-year-old, a year seven student at Farm Cove Intermediate, won the Australasian Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) title for his division at the Pan Pacific Champs in Melbourne last year. He will return to Melbourne at the end of November and attempt to do it all over again. “I’m really lucky to train under amazing coaches who have made me able to go up against other top competitors,” Brandon said. He trains at Auckland MMA in Pakuranga and has been BJJ national champion for his grade for the past two years. Brandon said although he still gets a bit nervous before competing, he enjoys the challenge. “BJJ is all about out-moving the other person. It’s like human chess. It’s great being part of a growing sport.” After the Pan Pacific Champs, Brandon is hoping to pick up sponsorship which will allow him to compete in the 2017 Kids World BJJ Championships in the United States. When he’s not training or competing in BJJ, he is in the wrestling ring. He picked up wrestling to improve his “takedowns” in BJJ and every Friday he travels to a gym in Te Atatu to train. For the last two years, Brandon has been the top wrestler in his division at both North Island and national levels and won the Most Scientific Wrestler Award for 10-13 year olds at this year’s nationals. He will be hoping that all this extra training will bear fruit next month when he faces up in Melbourne.
