akuranga’s going to the dogs, literally. Between January and August, 135 canines were found loose on the streets of Pakuranga out of a total of 399 reports in the eastern suburbs, according to Auckland Council figures. In that same period, 44 fines were issued in relation to the dogs picked up totalling $11,100. August saw the highest rates of strays, and Pakuranga was again the worst across the district. Auckland Council’s animal management manager Tracey Moore says the council wants to have a positive relationship with
dog owners. “If a dog is picked up for the first time, we issue a warning, rather than a fine, and can help educate the dog owner as to ways of preventing the dog from wandering.” This includes property inspections to ensure the dog can be left securely with tighter rules for menacing breeds, she says. “Unfortunately, many of the dogs that we pick up do not have microchips or registration tags to identify them or their owner.” The lost pets are advertised on the Auckland Council website and also on www.petsonthenet. co.nz If no owner comes forward after seven days, the Auckland Council
Whitford Dental Group
takes ownership and finds a new home for the dog, but if it is not suitable for re-homing, it will be euthanised. When people come across any strays they are encouraged to think of safety first, says Ms Moore. “But if they are able to contain the dog in some way they should,” she says. “We [often] get calls that a dog is in someone’s garage. If they can tie the dog to a lamp post or put it in a garden shed it helps. We can get there within an hour to pick it up.” However, more importantly owners should register and microchip their dogs, says Ms Moore.

“... Sometimes dog collars come off. Under the Dog Control Act 1996 most dogs must be microchipped so that we can scan and find the details to find the owner. Having the dog registered and microchipped is the easiest way and it is the law.” ■ Under the Dog Control Act 1996 the following dogs must be micro-chipped: Dogs registered for the first time after July 1, 2006; dogs classified as “menacing” or “dangerous” after December 1, 2003; unregistered dogs impounded after July 1, 2006; registered dogs impounded twice after July 1, 2006; and imported dogs if the microchip does not comply with New Zealand standards.

team, more sponsorship and equipment. His ultimate aim is to open the first eye clinic in the Sagarmatha National Park. The Waking Dream Collective was established in 2013 by three New Zealand emerging women filmmakers, including Ms van Heerdon. Its goal is to tell captivating and unique stories from the margins and give a voice to those not often heard on screen. The filmmakers say their work is not just to entertain,
but to challenge and make audiences think about themselves and their place in the world. As the team of optometrists arrive in earthquake-torn Kathmandu and head to Lukla to begin their trek, the film will follow their trials and triumphs and look at foreign aid programmes in Nepal. “At a time when Nepal is arguably in more need of foreign aid than ever, this documentary is coming at a crucial time of re-assessment and change in terms of who the world provides aid to this region,” Ms van Heerdon says. dinner on October 11. Before they shake, rattle and roll at that all-star show, they’ll be all shook up on the Howick Club stage on Friday, October 9. It’ll be a special night for the gents in the spotlight, as they’re backed by Sharplin’s legendary Cadillacs band. Sharplin, the president of the Variety Artists Club, says it’s always a highlight to play with Devlin.
Sharplin appreciates how special it is to have known Devlin for so long and to have been up close to learn from all his elder’s talent and experiences. Devlin was, of course, New Zealand’s first fullblooded rock n’ roll king, generating fan adulation and roused emotions that were accorded to Elvis Presley and The Beatles. “He’s an entertainer through and through
and he’s still got that stage magic, that stage presence,” says Sharplin. “To work with him is a real buzz, and he can still make a room move. I’ve played in Howick many times and the Howick Club is great room to work in. We look forward to making it move again.” ■■ Johnny Devlin and Tom Sharplin play at the Howick Club on Friday, October 9 at 6pm.

After working in the industry, both women, with fellow filmmaker and graduate, Mojan Javadi decided to help found a collective to support women filmmakers. “Sadly the numbers of women in the industry in all areas, but particularly in directing, are still very low, Ms Golbakhsh says. “But if we, men and women, can support new and emerging women filmmakers to make more content and get their voices heard, then perhaps we can help change that.” Although mainly selffunded, the Nepal documentary is supported by the charity, Eyes for Everest, and through Westpac’s Boosted website for the arts. Plaza masterplan aiming high By Natalie Brittan
M
ore concrete plans have been laid for the rise of ‘Vim Valley’ with the help of a former Singaporean politician. Pakuranga Plaza was purchased last year for $96 million by Singapore-based GYP Properties, a subsidiary of directory publishers Global Yellow Pages, which is chaired by recently retired politician, Mah Bow Tan. As the mall celebrated its 50th birthday last week, the new owners unveiled their masterplan featuring up to 1000 residential units, a hotel and an entertainment complex with integrated transport as part of Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) plan and community facilities. The four-hectare site and surrounding Auckland Council-owned property will be redeveloped at a cost of more than $500 million. The development will be phased out in three stages, expected to begin in 2017 and be completed by 2030. Mr Mah says the Howick Local Board and Auckland Council’s vision to convert one of Auckland’s oldest malls into a true town centre struck a chord. The 67-year-old has been flying to Auckland once a month and has been consulting with the local board, iwi as well as the community which called to “preserve cultural heritage and envi-
ronmental links”. When asked if Pakuranga is ready for apartments, Mr Mah says he has great confidence. “Quite a few of the shop tenants came up to me and said when can I put my deposit down – and [members of] the local board!” The development is GYP Properties’ first and only project of its kind. “We are concentrating on this. If we do this well then I think it allows us other opportunities. We need to get this right,” Mr Mah says. Despite the scale and ambition, Mr Mah and his associates remain undaunted. “I’ve tackled bigger projects than this. It cannot be done all at once so it will be staged. It may look big overall but if you look at it in bite sizes it’s manageable.”
‘Masterplan’ troubles
The Pakuranga Plaza masterplan may sound grand, but there could well be a few spanners in the works. Long-time local Grahame Hamblin, of the former Hamblin’s Pharmacy in Pakuranga Plaza, owns four shops in the mall facing Brampton Crescent in the privately-owned row housing NZ Post. The former Appliance Outlet on the corner of Ti Rakau Drive and Reeves Road is also privately owned.

While Mr Hamblin concedes the centre needs a major upgrade, he says the proposed masterplan is not the way. “It will wipe away the casual shopping which Pakuranga was built on.” He believes the wider community needs to be consulted. “They seem to have forgotten that Pakuranga is a big area and they are catering for the people
who live in Half Moon Bay, Gossamer Drive [etc].” Mr Hamblin says communication has been poor.“We don’t really know what’s going on. There’s nothing concrete there that we’ve been notified about.” Mr Hamblin says the one thing he knows for certain is the 20-storey building which, he was told, was going to be 100 storeys initially. “They want to turn it into a Singapore mall instead of a Pakuranga town centre,” he says. Back in 2001, Mr Hamblin was embroiled in a similar debate, where then owners, Westfield,

wanted to develop councilowned car parks. The proposal was quashed after Mr Hamblin and other retailers mounted an opposition, supported by then Howick Board member and current Howick Local Board chairman David Collings who is surprised that the developers had not consulted the landowners. “We’re neither for or against [the developers’ masterplan]. Because we’re in the middle of the [planning] process we’re supportive of working alongside them and are going to push for various community outcomes.”

TPP significant: MP B
otany MP Jami-Lee Ross welcomes as “significant news” the controversial Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal which was this week finalised after years of negotiation. “It is an agreement that will deliver substantial benefits to New Zealand by reducing costs and barriers to trade with 11 other Asia-Pacific countries,” he said in his regular newsletter. “As a country, we need to trade with other nations to increase our wealth. NZ won’t get rich selling things to ourselves and we need to sell more of our products and services to customers around the world.” Improving access to international markets is part of the Government’s wider plan to create a stronger economy, with more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders. The TPP agreement will help to make that happen. “TPP is very positive for New Zealand. Successive governments have sought free trade agreements with the US and Japan for 25 years,” he says.
“We already export $28 billion worth of goods and services to other TPP counties. This agreement will create new opportunities to build on that and diversify our export markets.” As seen with other trade agreements, the reduction in tariffs leads to a significant increase in exports from New Zealand to those countries. With China, Kiwi exports rose from $2bn to $12bn after the 2008 China FTA. “It was disappointing that we could not achieve a more comprehensive agreement for our dairy exports. We did achieve the best possible outcome for dairy that could be negotiated and this involved negotiations up to the eleventh hour,” he says. “But while absolute tariff elimination was not possible, TPP is still unquestionably positive for the dairy sector.” For example, all tariffs on cheese to Japan will eventually be eliminated, and tariffs on infant formula into the US will be eliminated over 10 years. Once fully implemented, New Zealand will save $102 mil-
lion a year in tariffs on dairy exports. Many concerns raised previously about TPP are not reflected in the final agreement, Mr Ross says. “Consumers will not pay more for subsidised medicines as a result of TPP. “This is because Australia and New Zealand fought hard to maintain the Pharmac model of funding medicines and won.”

Fun with financial literacy Learning was put into good use for a class of entrepreneurs at Our Lady Star of the Sea School as they prepared for the school’s annual gala. Split into groups, they came up with product ideas which they designed, put together, worked out budgets and pricing and produced support advertising collateral. When the Times visited, the groups were waiting with their sales pitch at the ready. Projects ranged from Bootles, a device to keep boots upright, Eggheads – “they’re ready for adoption” one creator said, and 100 per cent recycled crayons melted into a variety of shapes called Mo Ho Krazy Krayons. “Light ‘em up” involved tin cans filled with water which was frozen, allowing the team to drill holes in the side and, after removing the melted ice, lanterns were placed inside. Three layers of different coloured balloons were
used for Squish-a-me stress balls, while two students, who had never sewn before, made matching beanies and scarves to be sold individually or as a set. A new take on Christmas were the Bookmas trees - folded magazine pages formed into the shape of a Christmas tree and decorated with glitter. Glitter Globes took advantage of different shaped jars into which were placed old toys or $2 shop specials, covered in glitter and glued to the bottom of the jars. Teacher Trish Webb said the project was part of the children’s maths programme, attaining financial literacy and putting their learning into use. “It was a about working together and showing resilience. If things were not going to plan, they came up with something else. “We had the gala coming up and it’s the first time we’ve done this to make money for the school. The children were committed from the start.”
Money raised from the gala will be put towards a new performing arts centre, says Sue Yandall, the school’s executive officer. Activities will include bouncy castles, adventure games, face painting and crazy hair. Families are being encouraged to create authentic ethnic food for the food stalls and home baking will be sold at the cafe. Students have been filling Jolly Jars with a variety of items from food and lollies to pencils. Quick Fire raffles will also be run with generous prizes, Ms Yandall says. “Term three has been dedicated to the gala and it is a good event for the parish and the school community. It’s a day where parishioners who may be ex-parents, still associated with the church but may have grandchildren here.” ■■ Our Lady Star of the Sea School gala day is at 10am2pm on October 17 at the school at 14 Oakridge Way, Northpark, Howick.

Portofino is a family of local restaurants focused on delighting every guest with a genuine Italian dining experience. We are proud to serve fresh, simple, delicious Italian food, complemented by a great glass of wine, served in a comfortable, home-like Italian setting where everyone is welcomed as family and friends...
Well, look who dropped by in Howick! Auckland Mayor Len Brown was seen last week checking out the new art gallery at the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre which he expects to be “sensational” when complete. “We are getting a lot for our money here,” he said at the conclusion of a tour of the construction site. “The arts community will love it. It is going to give them capacity for more exhibitions and not just locally but for the region.” His entourage included Howick Local Board chairman, David Collings, the council’s project manager Jody Morley, and Uxbridge director, Vickie Bowers. The $6.4 million redevelopment has already revealed the shell of the new gallery, featuring precast concrete cleverly disguised with a wood panelling effect on the exterior, along with the start of a studio block on the former Keall House site at the rear. Part one of the project also
includes a cafe, which Mr Brown said would be extremely popular; an administration building, meeting room and a studio courtyard. Uxbridge art classes have been temporarily shifted to the councilowned former Howick Police Station in Moore Street, while administration staff members are in an office off the existing hall and theatre. Ms Bowers said staff members and classes were expected to move into the new building next March. Stage two will follow involving a restoration upgrade of the existing theatre in the old church facing Uxbridge Road and the hall to the rear. After the Uxbridge visit, Mr Brown took a stroll through the village accompanied by the Howick Village Business Association chairman Ken Scott, HVBA manager Jenny Foster, and Mr Collings.

Feedback New trees are welcome
Not all residents of Bucklands Beach (Times, September 17) agree with the statements made by your correspondent. This writer, for one, challenges several of the statements made that in my view are misleading, if not false. 1. It is the house on the property and not any future tree growth that is the major obstruction to any views of Rangitoto from Hattaway or Morrow. 2. The views of Rangitoto from The Parade will not be impeded by the two trees at any time in their life cycle. 3. The photo with the letter is taken from Hattaway Ave itself so is a view only pedestrians or motorists will have. Surely they can walk or drive the less than 50 metres to The Parade and have unobstructed views of Rangitoto and Musick Point from the seaside reserve and parking. The Musick Point area is characterised by pohutukawa, and several mature specimens have

been removed recently. Having two new pohutukawa is a positive in this writer’s view. Finally I believe that this new house and the property in question have been built and landscaped to a very high standard befitting the Bucklands Beach area. If all properties in this suburb were of similar standard, we would be the envy of Auckland. Beware of the Rule of Unintended Consequences. Allen McCormick Bucklands Beach
Why is this a big deal?
I was wondering what the significance was of the article about the sale of a Golflands house by an investor who profited $120,000 in three months? (Overseas buyer nets $120,000 by Natalie Brittan, September 24) Did the buyer break any laws? Recently, a neighbour’s house on Clovelly Road was purchased by a “genuine” Kiwi investor, I mean white European and not
Asian, Maori, Pacific Islander or Indian or Latin American. Her parents could have come from England or other parts of Europe. She spent three months fixing up the place and sold it for a profit of at least $80,000. And, the agent who sold it was also a “genuine” Kiwi and made a profit as well from the sale of that property. Now the new owners, who are also Kiwis, but have lived there for less than a year, are talking about selling the house because they think they can make a profit of at least $100k. Is there anything wrong with that? Would that be newsworthy for the Howick Times? This phenomenon is repeated hundreds of thousand times over in this crazy market. A lot of people, regardless of their race or ethnicity, sold their houses when they could not refuse offers close to $1m or over. They made huge profits. So did Tony and Pat Eversden and their genuine Kiwi agents.
We live in a capitalist free market economy after all. Until there are such laws that prevent buyers from profiting from the resale of their houses, the Howick Times should be writing in a non-biased way about investors - regardless of their ethnic origins. To do otherwise, like what Ms Brittan did, just feeds into the anti-Asian, anti-foreigner and antiethnic bias unnecessarily. Madge Kho Howick
Our transport system is in trouble
Auckland transport is one of our city’s biggest problems. There is a waste of money and human resources in public transport through duplication of routes, inefficient timetables, bad placement of bus stops, lack of priority lanes and priority for buses at traffic lights and a dysfunctional road system. There is also vast excess of noise and pollution, and it is a waste of time.
We need to improve our transport because Auckland’s population is ever-increasing, just like the housing prices, and we need to supply better transport for the people of Auckland. There should be a better placement of bus stops, for example. There should be an increased number of bus lanes so that the buses can arrive on time. Traffic can slow down transport. A good way to solve this is by putting in bus lanes in the motorway and on busy roads. Also, even modifying the traffic light system to get the traffic flowing more smoothly. Some people may say it will cost a lot of money. Yes, it will, but it will be cheaper now than later. We shouldn’t delay this project. You can help us get this message across to the Auckland Council by signing the petition on https:// www.change.org/p/aucklandcouncil-auckland-transport. Shivneel Singh Year 10 Howick College

our front page article on the Syrian refugee crisis (Times, September 17) was a sorry example of biased opinion masquerading as journalism. The writer may be entitled to express his opinion, after all that was one of the reasons our gallant men and women crossed the oceans to join the allies in the World Wars, as well as other more recent conflicts. However it is surprising that this piece did in no way try to improve our understanding of a very complex political situation, nor did it offer a compassionate viewpoint one might expect from someone who too has lived through horrendous political upheaval and had to escape their own homeland to avoid persecution. A community newspaper should be able to provide a higher standard of journalism, otherwise it might as well just stick with advertisements. C Pipe and K Karayiannis Whitford
Retire in style. LIVE WITH EASE Retirement should be a time to do all the things you like. At DANNEMORA GARDENS we make that happen. In this wonderful East Auckland village you will enjoy elegant living and a vibrant community atmosphere. It is a place where there are always fun activities going on and there are a great bunch of people to enjoy them with. However, you can still enjoy complete privacy and peace in the comfort of your home. The great location also makes life easy. Botany Town Centre is literally just down the road, which means getting to all the shops, services, eateries and entertainment is a breeze. It really is so easy - which is just how retirement should be.
Editor’s note: The writer, our journalist Marianne Kelly, expressed no opinion at all but rather reported the views of Mr Roy on this issue. His views – or those of anyone else – are welcome whether or not we or our readers agree with them.

I have often wondered why the Chinese immigrants are willing to pay so much to ensure their children gain the Cambridge qualification rather than the NCEA one. The answer came when I went into the websites “where will the NCEA qualification take you and where will the Cambridge one take you?” The Cambridge list of countries was far greater than the NCEA one. So it is right and proper that secondary schools should offer both. Gary Hollis, Howick

Your comments were derogatory
An opinion expressed in this newspaper (regarding whether fleeing Syrians are migrants or refugees) certainly gives another the right to disagree and express his own opinions on the subject. It does not give the right to another to question the writer’s opinion on many other matters, especially in the nasty derogatory way used by Mr Crane (Times, September 24, “Is his white privilege threatened?”). It is doubtful that Mr Crane knows Mr Roy or much about him, as Mr Roy certainly does not know Mr Crane nor his opinion on the original subject, as he did not actually express it. Valerie Roy
Re Vector Shareholding
Your correspondent in the Herald September 19, Mike Shingle of Bayswater is totally correct. Mr John Collinge, barrister and solicitor, has had a convenient brain fade. Mercury Energy became the AECT on August 27, 1993. Mr Collinge became a trustee and a board member briefly of AECT. So his impartiality is certainly questionable. However I would say that his approach is naïve and sounds like it is driven by his past lack of acceptance in his director roles within the energy sector and that he still appears to have a grudge to bear. What is clear is that both North Harbour and Waitemata sold their Vector equivalents cheaply , but did so that their electricity rates were lower, whereas Auckland’s Vector, not owned by the council, then built its assets and acquired more enabling it to pay future dividends to the old Auckland energy users. Its divi-
dends should actually be much higher than they are! Why now, should Vector pay dividends to area energy users who have benefitted through low energy rates etc for years from past infrastructure sales? In terms of his wild and risky recommendation that Vector be put in the hands of Auckland Council, that is even more ridiculous, given that Auckland Council cannot even manage the Auckland Port assets for the benefit of Auckland taxpayers, given that they wish to destroy our harbour through further expansion, and even consider selling it to offshore buyers. Furthermore, given that they have sold the majority of the shares in Auckland Airport, one should be aware that Vector shareholders should decide very carefully before they sell their shares to offshore buyers. Any council should protect the assets and not try to sell everything to finance more ridiculous schemes by shortterm mayors who have delusions of grandeur. When Auckland Council is finally decentralised and we go back to the old local bodies, these assets will be returned and Mr Collinge will still be having brain fade and tilting at windmills. Aircraft noise
Howick has always been a very peaceful place to live. Unfortunately over the last few years, our skies have been crisscrossed with big jets either approaching or leaving Auckland Airport. I was always under the impression that there was an agreement when the airport opened that the aircraft would fly up the Waiheke Channel. As I go about my work in the
eastern suburbs, I am aware that there are few places which escape the noise of aircraft arriving from Australia or leaving to go to distant shores. The airport has now been authorised to undertake a trial for wide body aircraft on a new flight path over Howick to Auckland Airport. Including departures and arrivals, we have counted more than 12 aircraft flying overhead. In the morning there is a stream of aircraft leaving the airport under power and in the afternoon when the Australian aircraft arrive, a stream of aircraft making their approach. The noise is of such a level that when talking to someone outside the conversation is stopped until it passes. I understand that in areas of Howick now any renovations to houses have to include provisions to stop aircraft noise. Looking at the web sites showing the flight paths from Australia, it is clear to see that prior to flying over the NZ coastline, aircraft make a deliberate turn to fly over Howick. One has to asked why can’t they fly up the centre of the Waiheke Channel. I believe the additional fuel usage would be minimal. Warwick Day, Cockle Bay

Learn languages in your own time
I am starting to wonder if schools want the Maori culture to become extinct. I don’t think foreign languages should be taught in schools. I actually feel it’s a bit racist. If students want to learn a language other than English, they or their parents should pay for lessons outside of school. There is now a shortage of people in New Zealand who can speak Maori – a national language of New Zealand. Name and address withheld

At a distance of forty-two days, by Wellington-based artists Jenny Gillam and Eugene Hansen, in collaboration with Adrian McCleland, is the result of a long-term research project with scientists from the Institute of Natural Resources at Massey University. Serving as both art and genomic science, the project involves an investigation into a rogue colony of female native New Zealand stick insects that became established during the early 20th century in the Tresco Abbey Garden, part of the Isles of Scilly off the southern coast of the UK. to the Isles with entomologists Steve Trewick and Mary Morgan-Richards to observe the insects, of great scientific interest because of the length of time the all-female colony has been reproducing without male involvement. In the Te Tuhi foyer a vivarium contains stick insects of the same species found in the Isles of Scilly. The Latin word vivarium translates as ‘a place of life’ and is a container traditionally used by scientists to observe flora and fauna. A replica of the Portacom building where the insects are currently kept in Palmerston North under quarantine restrictions and artificial lighting, together with a cardboard box of quarantine clothing, can be seen in the gallery. Fur-
ther gestures to cultivation, containment and control are indicated by ultraviolet grow lamps and examples of irrigation. The human control and classification of nature is further explored in a wall work which lists the scientific names of plants that were transported from New Zealand in 1908, destined for Tresco Abbey Garden. It is likely that the stick insects originally travelled to the Abbey Gardens with this shipment of plants but were not discovered until much later. ■■ Running in conjunction is Cultivate it as you will [Carnegie’s New Zealand 1902-2015]. Academic programme underway
124579-V15
Ten former Pakuranga College students have returned to their old school to tutor those facing this year’s NCEA scholarship examinations. The new academic coaching programme is run by The Learning Collaborative, an Aucklandbased company run by a group of Auckland University undergraduates, including the 10 former Pakuranga College students. The sessions, which started on September 19-20, are available to all students sitting NCEA exams. Participants are being coached in effective revision and exam techniques. Importantly the sessions offer high potential students the opportunity to benefit from the experience of tutors who have been recently successful in the scholarship process. Daniel Snell, head of Intensive Courses, says the group set up the Learning Collaborative last year

because its members felt there was a lack of affordable support for the NCEA scholarship exams. “As an organisation, we believe that education should be about understanding, not rote learning. As a result, we aim to develop the students’ thinking skills, as well as their exam technique. “This is why we are delighted to be working with Pakuranga College, because of its focus on ‘learning
through understanding’.” The college’s deputy principal, Paul Bennett, who is organising the programme, says the college is delighted to get involved and allow local scholarship students the opportunity to improve their chances of success in 2015. ■■ More information about The Learning Collaborative is at www. thelearningcollaborative. org.nz.

Coastal erosion a work in progress S
eawall upgrades have been completed at Howick Beach and near completion at Mellons Bay in an ongoing Howick Local Board mission to protect local beaches from erosion. Howick Local Board members John Spiller and Garry Boles say they’ve seen recent situations where a number of factors combined at once creating havoc at popular local beaches. “As well as ensuring people can access and enjoy our beautiful coastlines, we also want to reduce the impacts on coastal residential areas,” says Mr Spiller. “We are taking a common sense approach with ongoing monitoring and measured responses. Seawall upgrades
and sand replenishment in particular can help control how far the tides push in.” Mr Boles says sand replenishment and relocation will also take place in early summer at other beaches as required, including Eastern Beach. “A substantial amount of work has been done over the last year and in addition to continual monitoring, $762,000 has been dedicated toward specific projects for the 2016 financial year,” he says. “We’re also advocating for a regional approach to managing coastal erosion. It’s important we’re coordinating our activities across the region because tide levels and surges here are greatly influenced by what’s going on in neighbouring areas.”
The Howick Local Board has allocated $803,000 toward coastal erosion measures for the 2016 financial year including: ■■ Eastern Beach annual sand relocation - $69,000 ■■ Erosion protection sea wall at Pakuranga Road (Fisher Parade Esplanade reserve) $600,000 ■■ Erosion protection seawall for Bramley Drive reserve through to Tamaki Bay Drive Reserve - $33,000 ■■ Howick Beach sand top ups and boat ramp clearing (coastguard access) - $20,000 ■■ Complete sand top ups at the southern end of the Cockle Bay sea wall to reduce pocket erosion - $20,000 ■■ Coastal asset renewals at Cockle Bay - $20,000.

It’s organised by the Botany Charitable Trust which provides support to young people and families in the Botany area. Chairman Peter Woodcock says Mr Setchell seldom performs in the Auckland area and the trustees are hoping for an audience that does justice to the organist’s reputation and skills. Mr Setchell is associate professor of music at Canterbury University where he tutors in organ music. He is also the curator of the Rieger pipe organ in the Christchurch Town Hall, currently under repair. Recent international performances include a tour in Australia, concerts in St

Hearing Health Your questions answered Bridget Sewell Audiologist, Bay Audiology Pakuranga
Why do I have trouble hearing in noisy situations? Loud cafés, restaurants and social get-togethers present a real challenge for people in terms of how easily they can understand speech. Much of this is due to how the pitches of different speech sounds interact with background noise. Many consonants that we use in everyday speech are high pitched soft sounds such as ‘t’, ‘s’ and ‘th’. By contrast, vowels and other consonants like ‘m’ and ‘n’ are not only louder, but are lower pitched and carry across a room much easier than the high pitched ones. Unfortunately for us, our ears are tuned in such a way that these low pitched sounds will usually cover the higher pitched ones, meaning that we can miss the beginning and ending of words. If someone has a hearing loss, their ears and brain are less able to filter out sounds as easily, so even more listening effort is required. This can make a person feel pretty tired by the end of the night! A number of strategies can be used to help. Move away from the source of noise, be it a noisy bar or jovial table of people and seek out a place with less hard reflective surfaces that cause echo. Position yourself so the noise is behind you and the person you want to hear ahead of you.
If you suspect that you are having more difficulty hearing than you have in the past, call Bay Audiology Pakuranga now on 09 576 7206 for a FREE hearing check.

Work contracts SOLUTIONS, with the Citizens Advice Bureau
O
ne of the most important documents required by a young person starting out in the work force is an employment agreement. This is a contract between employee and employer, covering hours of work, rates of pay and holidays. Every employer must provide a written signed contract and which is legally binding. If breached by one side not doing what has been agreed, the other side can enforce the agreement by going to the Employment Relation-
ship Authority (ERA) whose role is to resolve employment problems by looking into the facts and making a decision based on the merits of the case and not on technicalities. There are minimum rights and entitlements which are also legally binding whether or not they are specifically mentioned in the agreement, such as entitlement to four weeks’ annual leave, a minimum wage and fair treatment. These apply to all employees who are members of that union, usually with a pay scale for different jobs. Fixed term, casual or part-
time work could also be offered. However, such workers have the same rights as other employees, except their jobs will finish at the end of a fixed-term or they are on call to attend work if and when needed. People needing help or advice on employment agreements, or any other matters which may be troubling or worrying them can visit, telephone or email the Citizens Advice Bureau where welltrained volunteers are happy
to provide a listening ear and help resolve any concerns. ■■ Solutions is a regular column from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Library Building, Aylesbury Street, Pakuranga, phone 576-8331 or 0800-367-222; email pakuranga@cab.org. nz. Advice is free, confidential and informative.
Bold and brassy through history Howick Brass will present a concert as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival on Sunday. The varied programme outlines the importance of the humble but hardy brass band throughout the history of Auckland. The concert covers the founding of Auckland 175 years ago, through to the reverence of a military sunset ceremony and onward to the jazz age and rock ‘n roll dance craze that swept Auckland in the
mid 1950s. The concert will open with a traditional Maori introduction featuring a set of Polynesian conch shells instead of the traditional brass band instruments, in order to depict the coming together of the tangata whenua of Auckland (Ngäti Whätua o Orakei) and the pioneer settlers to form Auckland. ■■ The free concert is on Sunday, 4pm at All Saints Church, Howick.

Volunteer programme enriches lives HBH Senior Living Care & Village is well known for its staff who go the extra mile to care for their residents. The same can be said for its volunteers. From arranging fresh flowers, serving morning tea and running bingo sessions, to painting nails and vibrant murals, the volunteers at HBH add colour in a variety of ways to the residents’ lives. Volunteer Programme coordinator Kim Thwaites says the volunteers come from a range of backgrounds. “Many are retirees, some are new to NZ and there are a lot of younger people offering their time too.” Winnie Hsu, a student from Macleans College says, “Visiting HBH is my favourite way to spend Saturday mornings as I love to chat and share my music with the residents of the Rest Home, who have become true friends to me.” Heather Plummer started volunteering at HBH after her husband became a resident, “I love being able to give something back after the amazing support and care my husband received during his time at HBH. The staff are fantastic and the residents really appreciate everything we do.” HBH has around 130 volunteers who donate their time – an hour or more once or several times a week. The Volunteer Programme is an HBH offering where care goes both ways – enriching the lives of the residents, as well as the volunteers. The team at HBH are always looking for more volunteers, so if you’d like to help they’d love to hear from you! To find out more, please phone their Volunteer Co-ordinator, Kim Thwaites, on 09 538 0827 or email volunteers@hbh.org.nz.

rom the outside, it’s an unassuming enough looking building. But go inside and the Highland Park Community House is a buzz of activity, offering the opportunity for a myriad of small groups to pursue their interests, from English conversation to scrabble. Small is the operative word as the house offers three meeting rooms which accommodate 12, 20 or 50 people and a consultation room suitable for one-on-one conversation. It’s an ideal venue for groups that do not need the facilities of large community halls. Sue Thompson is the house manager, providing a cheery ‘meet-and-greet’ presence at the reception and the brains behind a complex booking and accounting system designed to juggle the demands of one-off to regular monthly events. She’s been in the job for three months and is backed by an enthusiastic volunteer management committee. While the building in Aviemore Drive is owned by Auckland Council, it is over-
ple playing scrabble instead of spending the afternoon at home alone,” she says. She’s assisted two days a week by her assistant Jenny Chang who also provides the additional benefit of speaking fluent Mandarin. Unsurprisingly, many of the activities are geared at helping new migrants, for example English conversation and Mandarin for children. But the rest cover the gamut, from Plunket talks, evening craft, patchwork/quilting, to Tai Chi, yoga for all levels, and a weekly get-together for the over 60s titled Korean positive ageing. ■■ Howick and Pakuranga Community Houses Inc is extending a welcome to interested members of the public to attend its annual meeting at 10am on October 16 at the Highland Park Community House, 47 Aviemore Drive, Highland Park. Dr Byron Kemp
Structure & function for a better lifestyle Is your house in order? More importantly, is your health in order? Just as homes need regular maintenance, so do our bodies which are exposed to trauma and stress, both physical and emotional. But too often, people look to short term fixes, adopting a “band-aid” approach for symptoms and health concerns without addressing underlying issues, says Dr Byron Kemp of Botany Chiropractic Centre in Botany Road. “Symptoms are important – however, symptoms can often be secondary to primary functional issues of the spine and nervous system. Rather than delivering short term cures, we offer a lifestyle change,” says the

low-stressed lives still fall 17 times an hour before learning how to walk. “But with specific structural care to improve their body function they become stronger, more adaptive, more functional and better equipped to handle whatever comes their way.” The same applies for adults. “We have this idea that growing old is an inevitable slow, continual, detriment to our health but it isn’t necessarily true. People who look after themselves can still have a healthy, functional lifestyle well into their golden years. It’s what we do as we age that determines how we age.” Dr Byron was a familiar face at Botany Chiropractic for many years before taking over two years ago from
founder Dr Murray Findlay who is still based at the practice and lectures at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic. A graduate of the internationally renowned New Zealand College of Chiropractic, Dr Byron is a staunch believer of the science and philosophy of his work and has been regularly receiving chiropractic care for himself for the past 12 years. An avid crossfitter, the Bucklands Beach resident knows firsthand the benefits of keeping the body in optimum condition. And he is more than passionate about his work, recounting a recent highlight. “A couple came to us after experiencing years of pregnancy troubles. Seven failed pregnancies over six

When there are shifts and changes in framework and structure, floorboards can start to creak, windows won’t close correctly and cracks start to show in the paint – structural issues, leading to symptoms.” In order to maintain better health and function and to prevent problems escalating, it’s essential to start chiropractic care, which adjusts and corrects any misalignments in the spine, sooner rather than later, says Dr Byron. s a somewhat outsider on Rugby World Cup politics, after reading a lot of opinion columns, interviews, and the overbearing number of articles all vying for the best news angles, it’s become one big mind game and it’s hard to see clearly. First with Japan beating South Africa and then Australia booting England out of the cup for good, it’s been an emotional rollercoaster. We cannot deny that some of the top teams are caving under pressure;
even the All Blacks have not been as impressive as we hoped. People are starting to panic and jump to conclusions, completely unaware of how calm coach Steve Hansen is. I can’t help but feel there’s this aura of negativity like it’s forbidden to talk about how well our team played. Regardless of how much we win or lose by, every team should be supported by their country. And I think this is where we have

been failing most. Like Pita Alatini said, we should be showing our team’s genuine support rather than critiquing every failure. And I say this about all countries, not just New Zealand. While England may hide in shame, I hope New Zealand will always be proud of the All Blacks no matter what result they have.

Taking Howick to the Rugby World Cup A group from Howick have sent in some great photos from the Rugby World Cup in the UK. Bianca Brunschwiler sent images from the All Blacks v Georgia game last weekend at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. “There was a great atmosphere during and after the game - the indoor stadium was so loud and all of Cardiff was a massive celebration,” says Bianca. “All the Welsh love Kiwis and Georgians – well done to Georgia on scoring a try (NZ won 43-10). “Now that Australia has beaten England, there is a lot of support here for the All Blacks to win. “We have a very good reputation in London as well,” she says. “We’ve met a lot of other Kiwis living in London and who also have travelled from home to support New Zealand. “The atmosphere here is just amazing.” Their Howick contingent is there on two year visas working in London, using it as a base while travelling Europe.

Celebrate locally W
ith just 10 more weeks till Christmas, it’s time to think about the perfect venue for hosting end of year celebrations. To this end, we’ve rounded up a selection of local restaurants, bars, cafes and eateries that will make the decision (hopefully) a lot easier. From budget-friendly to luxury dining, there’s something for everyone. The list is as follows:
Te Tuhi Cafe
Housed in Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, this Pakuranga stalwart has a sunny courtyard which is ideal for big groups. Also known to be kid-friendly with oodles of space for the littlies to romp, it’s easy to keep the youngsters and adults in a jovial mood. When it comes to dietary requirements, this familyfavourite is known for its glutenfree baking and meals.
Howick RSA
The Howick RSA has long been known for its generous portions, genuine atmosphere and live entertainment. A well-loved and supported institution, this is a feel-good venue with traditional Christmas flavours.
Catering by Debbie
This one’s a little bit of a secret in Howick. Nestled in Moore Street, this newly zhushed up space by an experienced caterer is sweet and a little bit quirky. An affordable, suburban location providing a fresh, delightful menu prepared on-site, Catering by Debbie has lots going for it. With an inspiring high tea menu featuring dainty morsels such as lamingtons, lemon meringue tarts and pinwheel sandwiches, the hosts have set the table for a successful event.

There’s always something going on at this lively hub too, including the weekly pub quiz, dining specials and live entertainment.
Grangers
GRANGERS
Cruising on towards the Pohutukawa Coast, there’s no missing Pepperjacks by Pine Harbour Marina. This well-run operation is especially geared for summer celebrations thanks to its gorgeous waterfront location. A few surprises can be found in the menu too, with the famed ‘onion mumm’ a feature.
The contemporary, hip crowd will be well taken care of at Grangers and its stylish surrounds at Half Moon Bay Marina. Offering unfettered views of the sea, this good-time local is also next door to its Italian sister Mezza Luna which caters for small parties and celebrations. Method:
Preheat the oven to 180oC. Put the potatoes on to boil and cook until about 1/3 cooked. Peeled or not as you prefer. Then drain them well and add the onion, lemon, garlic, thyme, a good glug of olive oil, salt, pepper and gently shake to fluff up the outside of the potatoes and cover them in oil. This fluffiness is what makes great the roast potatoes. Place on an oven tray and roast for 35 minutes or until cooked and golden. Turn if needed so the onion doesn’t burn. Cut the skin from the chops and remove some/all of the fat. Place the skin in the oven to cook with the potatoes. Heat a pan on med high and cook the pork chops until done. Place the beans on an oven tray. Drizzle some olive oil over the beans, and roast for 10 minutes or until just starting to brown. Then remove from the oven and keep warm. Serve the pork with the potatoes, beans and some crackle on the side. Crumble over some feta and enjoy. Alternatively you can serve with a tsp of Dijon mustard.

➤ AND MORE: • You can substitute oregano for the thyme. • Leaving the potato skins on retains a lot of goodness. • If you aren’t a fan of feta try some mustard instead.

Getting a professional touch Buying tips
Ask the salesperson for a demonstration model and get them to make an espresso so that quality can be checked before buying. Check the milk-frothing mechanism to make sure a good-quality creamy froth can be created without large bubbles. Make sure the controls are easy to operate. A digital display is better than indicator lights.
Getting started
To remove factory flavours, flush a litre of water through a new machine and push a cup of hot water through the steam wand. A standard espresso shot is 7 grams of coffee in 30ml of water. This can be amped up by adding more coffee or reducing the quantity of water. Use fresh water only. Discard any water that’s been sitting in the tank for a few days. Adjust the grind fineness until the machine produces 30ml of espresso after about 20 seconds. This time, called “extraction”, doesn’t include the few seconds of “preinfusion” some machines go through. The best temperature for brewing is about 91 to 92 degrees C. If the brewing temperature is too hot, the coffee can have a bitter flavour; too cold and the coffee
could be under-extracted, producing a watery coffee lacking in flavour. Warm up the cups by leaving them on the cup warmer (if there is one) or running hot water into them. Froth milk immediately after making an espresso. Don’t let the coffee cool. Aim for small creamy bubbles. Banging the jug on a table and swirling it around several times will remove the larger bubbles. After frothing the milk, clean the nozzle with a sponge that’s not used for anything else. Run a small amount of water to cool the internal parts of the machine, otherwise the extra heat can burn the grind of the next cup of coffee. For a “long black”, add an espresso shot to hot water rather than extracting it for a long time. Over-extraction causes bitterness. Drink the espresso within a few minutes of it being made.
Tips for the home barista
Two main varieties of coffee beans are Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans generally make a higher-quality coffee. A true espresso is made from darkly-roasted and finely-ground beans sometimes called “Italian style”. But this can be misleading, Consumer says, as some labels are not dark or ground finely enough. When using a manual or semiautomatic espresso machine, Consumer recommends buying a grinder. Avoid cheaper grinders that don’t give control of the fine-
was passed through the filter for too long. If a good crema is still impossible to achieve, check whether the coffee chamber is dirty.

ness. A good burr-type grinder provides the right fineness and control. For best results grind just before making the coffee. Keep beans fresh by buying in small quantities from a store that has a high turnover. Use beans roasted no more than 10 days ago. Keep them in an airtight container somewhere cool, dry and dark. Don’t refrigerate or freeze. For milky coffee, use fresh homogenised milk. Full-fat milk produces the best quality froth. Low-fat milk will produce more froth, but it tends to separate more quickly. Invest in a thermometer that fits inside the frothing jug. Milk should be about 65 to 70 degrees C. Any hotter and it will burn.
Crema
Espresso has a creamy, pale, golden froth on top of the dark brown coffee. It’s called the crema, and Consumer says it’s one of the most important things that
distinguishes espresso from other types of coffee. Crema is actually caramel. The high temperature and pressure in an espresso machine caramelise the sugar naturally present in coffee, aerate it and expel it with the espresso. Perfect crema should be thick and stable, and preserve the coffee’s flavour, aroma and temperature.
Perfecting the crema
If the crema is light, inconsistent, thin and dissipates quickly, the coffee has been under-extracted. It was probably too coarsely ground or the water temperature was too low. If it’s dark and has a hole in the middle, there’s either too much coffee in the filter basket or the coffee was compressed into the filter basket (a process known as tamping) too firmly. If it’s white with big bubbles, the coffee was probably overextracted because the hot water

Use fresh, homogenised milk. Full-fat milk produces the best quality froth. Low-fat milk will produce more froth, but it tends to separate more quickly. Use a stainless steel jug, half full of milk straight from the fridge. Turn on the steam and purge any water from the wand. Stop and put the wand into the milk just below the surface. Angle the jug and turn the steam on to full. Move the jug around to create a whirlpool effect, keeping the nozzle just under the milk level and well under the foam as it develops. When the foam has risen to almost twice the original milk level, drop the nozzle down to heat the milk. Keep heating until the jug is almost too hot to touch. The froth should be creamy where the bubbles are so tiny they can't be seen, and the surface should look shiny, almost glasslike. After frothing the milk, bang the jug on the table to remove larger bubbles from the froth, swirl it around a few times, bang again and pour it on the top of the coffee straight away. The milk and froth should be poured out of the jug on to the crema. There should be no need to spoon it out.

Build consent numbers high T
he annual number of building consents in Auckland has reached an eight-year high, with 8615 consents issued in the year to August, the highest since 2007. The 741 consents for the month of August is the highest number of consents issued in Auckland in any August since 2004. The Statistics New Zealand figures follow the release of the latest Auckland Housing Accord Monitoring Report, which shows the longest and strongest period of growth in consents ever in Auckland, while the National Construction Pipeline report projects 80,000 new homes for the city by 2020. Meanwhile, warnings by Finance Minister Bill English that there is a risk of a house price crash caused by an over-supply of housing, eight years after the initial shock in demand, are being challenged. Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley
Church says such claims, based on USA studies, are “the economic forecasting equivalent of reading the entrails of chicken... the American experience in the years leading up to 2008 was basically a comedy of errors.” Mr Church says New Zealand has tight controls around lending, probably too tight, and the Auckland housing crisis is underpinned by real demand, not an artificial boom created by the banks as was the case in the US. He rejects Mr English’s claim that a price crash is inevitable, saying the Auckland market has a history of levelling off after boom periods, with prices going nowhere for a few years then starting to rise again when the next boom kicks off. The New Zealand Planning Institute also challenges Mr English’s claims, saying that he could consider a raft of issues that could make a difference to the affordable housing issue.

O star of the sea, help me and show me herein, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me here you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. The prayer must be said for 3 days and the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thanks for prayers answered.

Having relieved them of the Super Rugby crown, Australia look the best balanced team on the evidence of this World Cup to date. Their scrum embarrassed England and in Pocock and Michael Hooper they have the two fastest fetchers in an area where Richie McCaw ruled so long as king. McCaw is still playing well. But, like a few other veterans, he’s not as fast as he once was. In cherishing experience, old blokes will tell you that “you can’t put an old head on a young pair of shoulders.” True, but an old head on a slow www.times.co.nz/classifieds
pair of legs is not good either. I’m not advocating McCaw should go because he remains a champion player and an outstanding captain. Nevertheless the extra speed Pocock and Hooper possess make them a dangerous axis. Admittedly having lost to Australia in Sydney, the All Blacks hammered them at Eden Park in their best display of the season. Meanwhile congratulations to amazing skipper Johnathan Thurston whose golden point drop goal climaxed a magnificent 17-16 NRL championship win for North Queensland against Brisbane.

‘Shag’ has birds-eye view Agnew’s
I’m glad coach Steve ‘Shag’ Hansen isn’t worried about the All Blacks mediocre form in the World Cup because I suspect most of their fans most certainly are. A shag is a duck-like bird which spends much of its life swimming under water where, one would suspect, it has limited vision. Were it not for the laconic Hansen’s remarkable record, critics might suggest he suffers the same fate. The truth of the matter, he confides, is his team has purposely not revealed any of its best moves in pool play, preferring to keep them for the play-offs. Having drawn the easiest pool, the All Blacks struggled against an improved Argentina and were not convincing against rugged Namibia and Georgia. Eighteen handling errors against the latter is not acceptable from any team at whatever grade the game is played. Stunning tries to Waisake Naholo and Malakai Fekitoa and a hat-trick by Julian Savea were highlights in what otherwise was a substandard team effort against tough, courageous minnows who showed no respect for the
Angle
All Blacks reputation. Whereas No 8 David Pocock is shaping up as the danger man for the impressive Australians, former great Daniel Carter continues to look only a shadow of his former self for the All Blacks. Whereas Wallaby first five Bernard Foley zipped across for the first two tries in his team’s 33-13 elimination of hosts England, Carter was not only flat in general play, but his goal-kicking wasn’t up to scratch either. While it was great to see Naholo in full flight in scoring his try, his failure to treasure the ball later indicated his lack of match play. Deciding between him and Nehe Milner-Skudder when it comes to the playoff matches should have the selectors scratching their heads and risking splinters. Deep down the All Blacks will know they need to play much better if they are to retain the Webb Ellis Trophy.

Shi off to champs By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER
H
e may look small but his strength is not to be doubted. Steven Shi from Manukau is training to lift big at the powerlifting commonwealth championships in Canada in November. Shi, a personal trainer at Les Mills Howick, first discovered the sport of powerlifting while at work. “I was working and saw a girl powerlifting upstairs and she was dead lifting 100kg and she was a really small girl. “I was very impressed and I asked her ‘what are you doing?’ she said powerlifting. “It sparked my curiosity from there” Shi said. Powerlifting, Shi describes, is a three-lift sport comprising of squat, bench press and dead lift with three attempts allowed at each lift. “It’s a strength sport, who can lift the most amount of weights kind of thing” he said, not to be confused with body building. Three years later, Shi has already earned himself the title of national champion for the men’s open weight age group under 66kg category. Last year Shi attended his first international competition, the

Asia Oceania championships in Melbourne, where he realised he still has a long way to go. “I was still too new, I was good in New Zealand but didn’t really stand a chance internationally and I knew that. “I went for the experience and to share the platform with the best in the world,” he said. With the Commonwealth championships quickly approaching, Shi has been training incredibly hard, with nine training sessions a week, each two-three hours long.
The challenge for this 23-yearold, however, is not the training, qualifying or competing – it’s getting there that is proving to be the hardest. Shi has organised a public fundraising event featuring acrobatic performances, the New Zealand Calisthenics Athletics team, and attempts at some obscure Guinness World Records. ■ The event is at Les Mills Howick on Saturday, October 17, from 12pm to 3pm, with a gold coin donation barbecue starting at 11am. Details at www.eventbrite.com.
