Educators lose their cool with Minister By FARIDA MASTER
M
any school leaders have expressed outrage after Education Minister Hekia Parata introduced the Community of Online Learning (COOL) last week. Local principals are dismayed by the radical change in what they describe as trivialising education with the introduction of a new legislation that allows any student of schooling age to enrol in COOL – meaning students can enrol with
an accredited online learning provider instead of attending school. While giving the students a wide choice through initiatives like partnership schools is seen as a giant stride in digital learning, the move has got teachers up in arms especially since the new privatised education model allows any registered school/tertiary provider to apply to be a COOL provider. A strongly worded press release from the New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association
(PPTA) quotes junior vice-president Jack Boyle saying: “New Zealanders care about quality education for our tamariki, and we expect education policy to be well-considered and based on sound evidence. When our Minister of Education starts flapping around, changing the approach to legislation at whim, we all have cause for concern.” The issue is a very complicated one, says Allan Vester, chair of the NZ Secondary Principal’s Council and principal of Edgewa-

ter College. He said the COOL is already in operation in the USA. “It sits alongside the Charter school movement. Feedback on those schools and COOL show there is considerable doubt about the effectiveness of either. “If they are set up as a supplement to what our schools offer, they are likely to be supported. On the other hand, if they are set up to replace traditional schools for significant numbers of students, there will be serious concerns. ➤ Turn to Page 3

THE FUTURE: Pakuranga College computer studies student Cameron Irwin using the school’s brand new state-of-theart virtual reality headset and hand controllers. Times photo Wayne Martin
At 3.30pm on a Thursday afternoon, you don’t really expect to find high school students still hanging around in a classroom. But when the Times visited Pakuranga College last week that is exactly what it found. Digital technology teacher Tyne Crow had his hands full – his classroom buzzing with eager teenage students tapping away on HP computers. Mr Crow explained that they had recently received a state-of-the-art, high definition virtual reality (VR) headset and pair of hand controllers. The students are not just playing around with the new technology, he said, they are programming original content for it. “They are just really, really enthusiastic and want to get into it. “We’ve already got students studying programming and web development, but with this we’ve...

iscal responsibility is featuring high on the priority list of candidates who, recently took up a Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association invitation to put their case for becoming the next mayor of the SuperCity. Howick’s Fencible Lounge was packed to capacity to find out what the candidates for the Auckland Council mayoralty had to say. The line-up included Victoria Crone, Phil Goff, David Hay, John Palino, Mark Thomas and Chloe Swarbrick. The ex-Cabinet Minister for 15 years, Mr Goff said getting
better value for money would be his key focus and fiscal responsibility came first. Ms Crone said it was easy to talk about efficiency, but she was the only candidate with governance experience over a billion dollars. “I have done the numbers myself. I’ve gone through the annual reports long-term and annual plans. “There is a lot in there to be had and I know how to get it.” Mr Thomas is deputy-chair of the Orakei Local Board and said he would use council experience to get a better deal. “I’m part of a local board and councillors’ team who scrutinise this.” Mr Hay is a public service
career bureaucrat, including a stint as policy analyst for Manukau City Council and at one time for The Treasury. He said he would use existing council teams to go through the books. Mr Palino has also hired a financial expert to go through the council’s books and has already noted that 22 per cent of the city’s money is spent on the payroll. Meanwhile Ms Swarbrisk said the cost of the council getting things done was “ridiculous”. “They are spending $1.2 million to get people engaged in the election. I’m running a campaign with no money and I intend to look at the way the council is spending money.”

Q: What is the Vampire Face Lift®? A: The Vampire Face Lift® made famous by Hollywood and Kim Kardashian represents the greatest advance in cosmetic medicine this decade. Q: How does it work? A: The Vampire Face Lift®? is a combination of FDA approved Dermal Fillers and Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP which the doctor skilfully places into areas of the face to rejuvenate, lift and brighten. Q: Tell me more? A: Dermal Fillers are hyaluronic acids or carbohydrates, we already have this everywhere in our skin, but they diminish with ageing. PRP is naturally occurring, to get we take blood from the arm and centrifuge it, separating out the straw coloured component. The straw coloured fluid is called Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP, this PRP has concentrated growth factors that stimulate tissue, blood vessel and nerve growth when injected. When PRP is combined with Dermal Fillers we see new tissue growth that lifts cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionettes, thereby reducing lines and wrinkles, and because there is an increased blood supply, skin texture and colour also improves. Q: Who can do the Vampire Face Lift®? A: This procedure is specific and protected by the US Patent and Trademark office. Only licensed providers such as myself are sanctioned to perform the procedure. Appointments can be made at the Botany Specialist Centre 260 Botany Rd, Botany. Local Body Elections 2016 – Now we’re you’re talking
Tell us what you want from your candidates By Scott Yeoman
L
ast Thursday the Times started a crowd sourcing campaign to give our readers an opportunity to drive the debate surrounding the upcoming local body elections. We asked you what the most important issues in your neighbourhood were, what you wanted the Howick Local Board and Howick’s two Auckland councillors to improve on this term, and what questions you wanted the candidates to answer. Terry and Lynda Osborne responded to us on Facebook, asking: “What are they going to do about the amount of rubbish in our streets?” Gayle Unkovich – also using Facebook to share her thoughts – highlighted “transportation and reduction of council wastage” as the two most important election issues for her. Heres are three of the more-detailed responses that arrived via post and email during the week.
Support for the arts
“As a keen follower of artistic pursuits in the Auckland and eastern districts in particular and as an active musical participant in the Manukau Orchestra, what practical financial help and support would an aspiring candidate want to do for organisations such as ours? “It is noticeable that drastic cuts in funding from the various council boards require an explanation as to their political agendas which formally embraced the arts wholeheartedly. “Has there been a change in council and local body thinking and if so what is it?” Barbara M. Jackson, Pakuranga
Protecting the view from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve “I would like to know what each candidate intends to do to stop intensive development of three to three-and-a-half storey apartment blocks destroying public views from Stockade Hill and the Crawford
Reserve, Howick. “We are in danger of losing our iconic 360 degree views from Stockade Hill and our magic sea vista as we crest the hill into Howick. Crawford Reserve was bought specifically to preserve these views in perpetuity.” Robert McCallum
A Living Wage
“Could you please ask the Mayoral, Howick Ward Councillor and Local Body Candidates to indicate if they support and will vote in favour of the following policies: “1. A Living Wage for directly employed staff and workers employed on a regular and ongoing basis by contractors at Auckland Council and its CCO’s, including Auckland Transport, and will act in accordance with this commitment on election to office. “2. As a first step, that the 2017 renewal of cleaning services is undertaken on the basis that the successful tender will

“A real risk is that the very students who most need the support and guidance a school can offer will be those who end up in a COOL,” he said. It is a concern for many, he said, that there is a possibility that a COOL could be run by a ‘for profit’. “When a profit motive exists there is increased risk of corners being cut and financial mismanagement. I believe that if this initiative has any chance of providing a quality educational experience, the accreditation process will need to be extremely rigorous.” Michael Williams, deputy chair of NZ Secondary Principal’s Council and principal of Pakuranga Colleges says that while using technology is important, he doesn’t believe it will replace teachers. “My main objection to the ‘COOL’ concept of full online schooling is that it trivialises education as mere content acquisition. It ignores the important part of our curriculum document: key competencies, values and principles,” Mr Williams said. David Ellery principal of Somerville Intermediate points out that schools play a vital role in educating the child. “Intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally, to help them become well rounded citizens who can thrive in our society,” Mr Ellery said. “They provide a vast array of learning experiences and opportunities for children that can’t be offered through an individual online learning programme. “For a very small number of students who, for some reason, can’t attend a regular school, online learning is a helpful option - we have it with The Correspondence School. “It’s absolutely key that these COOLs are run by properly trained educators who can meet the needs of children at different ages and stages of their development,” he urgeds. ■■ faridam@times.co.nz
employ staff on no less than the current Living Wage. “3. A sub-committee of the Governing Body of Auckland Council be established that includes representatives of the Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ to inform, monitor, and support implementation of the Living Wage.” David Hall, Howick Now it’s your turn to be heard. Progress on crash corner in Botany By Scott Yeoman
R
ehabilitation work started on the crash-prone roundabout on the corner of Aviemore Dr and Cascades Rd in Botany last night to the delight of nearby residents. The Times revealed last month that people living on the corner were desperate for action after a string of near-misses. Cars were regularly losing control negotiating the roundabout, with some vehicles crashing into and through fences, parked cars and even houses. One of the concerned residents, Patrick Toon, who has been very vocal about the issue, summed up the news in two words – “about time”.
“We’re glad to see some progress on it, but we’re just disappointed it’s taken so long. It’s well overdue,” the 75-year-old said. Stage one enabling works started last night, according to Auckland Transport (AT). The first of three stages, it will involve marking out the underground service locations prior to the installation of the subsoil drainage works, which is scheduled to start on Sunday night. Stages two and three, scheduled for January/February 2017, will involve pavement rehabilitation and final asphalt surfacing. A spokesman for AT told the Times the rehabilitation work was deferred from the 2015/16 programme and had not been brought forward.
UPDATE: A pamphlet given to residents by Auckland Transport and Fulton Hogan to advise them of the rehabilitation road works. Times photo Scott Yeoman
He said AT’s road safety team is also proposing to install some shoulder “hatching” and “SLOW” road markings at the roundabout. This was timed to coincide with the maintenance work, he said. “The shoulder hatching will be

“...got the largest 3D development engine in the world and it’s all free to use – we’ve got an educational site license.” That site license is for Unity, an industry-standard game development platform. Mr Crow said his students have been creating their own content with Unity using what they learn within the programming projects from their courses and then applying it to virtual reality. The new HTC Vive headset and hand controllers give
students the chance to engage and interact with their creations. The product has realistic and high-speed hand tracking and an extremely high resolution and field of vision. With the hand tracking feature you can pick things up, fire objects in the direction you are pointing and even throw and catch things. And all in a virtual reality – a realistic environment created using software-generated images, sounds and other sensations. “It’s a whole new way of
interacting with computers,” Mr Crow said. He said it gives the students transferrable skills and inspires plenty of self learning along the way. “When we give the students a tool like this, that they’re really motivated to learn, we have them coming in at lunch time, after school and teaching themselves how to use it.” Pakuranga College funded part of the new HTC Vive using prize money it won at the NZTA Game Development Competition. But with its high price point – $4500 all up including the PC
marked around the corner, and it is expected this hatching will help to provide better delineation around the corner and most importantly create a sense of constriction to encourage slower speeds for motorists exiting the roundabout. “Red raised reflective pavement markers will also be installed to discourage vehicles driving over the shoulder hatching. The proposed ‘SLOW’ marking should also help to encourage lower speeds.” Meanwhile, Mr Toon said residents are still hoping for the introduction of a speed hump and a 50km/h speed limit. The speed limit is currentlsy 60km/h. The design of the roundabout is also still a concern, he said.
Mr Toon thinks AT’s proposed changes will make a difference to the situation, however, especially the new asphalt road surface. As for what brought about the changes, Mr Toon said: “Maybe they’ve read the articles in the Howick and Pakuranga Times and this has got them to push it ahead.” He said he has spoken to many engineers over the years and they have told him they would go away and speak to somebody to see if it was possible to fast-track the work. “But nothing’s ever happened. It seems funny that now we’ve got it in the paper and spoken to a couple of local council people, something’s happened...within two weeks.”
needed to run it – the school obviously had to chip in. Money well spent, deputy principal Billy Merchant said. “This is what we’re trying to do here. We’re trying to make learning real, we’re trying to make it authentic and by getting on board with the latest innovations, it’s just a winwin.” Mr Merchant said VR is the future without a doubt. “It’s not a gimmick. The application of this across so many different sectors is just huge.” But it’s not just VR technology that the school is investing in, it also has about six 3D printers and even a robotics division. There are six staff members
covering this rapidly growing field of study. This means modern career opportunities for those students that excel and one that is heading that way is Cameron Irwin. The 15-year-old was the first to get his software development project working on the Vive. “It’s a real novelty to be able to develop for something that is cutting edge,” the year 11 computer studies student said. Cameron said he feels “incredibly fortunate” to have the opportunity to use the Vive and Unity. Very few high schools in New Zealand have access to that level of VR technology, he said.

Both Iris and I have worked at public hospitals so we are experienced in helping children and adults with complex hearing issues.” During September, Focus Hearing is offering Howick residents the opportunity to experience a ‘fantastic new hearing device’. “It uses revolutionary new technology that helps your brain make sense of sound by separating speech from noise in a way like no other hearing device. It lets you shift your listening focus from one speaker to another, even in environments like restaurants or shopping centres where it is hard to hear,” Daniel says. “It is also the first hearing device that connects to the internet. You will be able to use it with a number of internetenabled products and services, and it also connects wirelessly to smart phones and other devices for phone calls or to stream music,” Daniel adds. Daniel invites you to book a FREE, no-obligation demonstration of this new device at his Open Day on 19 September. He is also offering 3 years of FREE annual reviews and batteries for any hearing aids purchased during

ike Turinsky is a man of the street. If he is elected onto the Howick Local Board at the upcoming Auckland Council elections he intends to stay that way. The youth worker and chief executive of the Young Life NZ Trust is taking a second tilt at representing the Botany subdivision on the board. “The decision to run again has not been taken lightly,” he says. “I’ve thought about it a lot. I decided after the election three years ago that I would stand again,” he says. “The phrase I used last time that I would not be political, really resonates with me. I learned that sticking with the practical and being careful not to wade through extra political pressures really helps me to stay focused on the main thing. “When you hang out with youth you can’t be political. They will call you out.” While a lot of good things have happened in the last three years, Mr Turinsky says he hasn’t seen much youth development from the local board. “Good things have happened, but only for a small proportion of youth,” he says. “I don’t like ‘feel good’ youth development. Volunteers needed to trial this new advanced technology at our Open Day Shopping, restaurants, meetings, and family get-togethers. These situations can all be hard to navigate when you have a hearing loss. But they don’t have to be anymore. We call it a complex listening environment. You call it “socialising”. Finally there’s a hearing device that lets you hear what you want to hear, even in the most complex listening environments. With it you can participate in multiple conversations, not just the one in front of you. Just like you used to do. We’d like to tell you about it.
Come to our Open Day on Monday 19 September and try out this new hearing technology.

Despite good progress and improved public awareness, approximately 160 NZ woman develop cervical cancer and 60 die from this preventable disease each year. Cervical cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells on the cervix. It is caused by certain types of High Risk Human Papilloma virus (HPV) that is passed on by sexual contact. The best ways to prevent cervical cancer are to never smoke or discontinue as soon as possible, avoid being sexually active at an early age, minimise the number of sexual partners and use condoms. Furthermore, the HPV vaccine currently offered to High School girls protects against 2 high risk HPV strains that cause 70% of Cervical Cancer if given before sexual activity starts. A 3 yearly cervical smear test reduces your risk by 90.8%. Any woman that has ever been sexually active aged between 20 and 70 should have cervical smear tests. Whether you need smear tests after a hysterectomy depends on your personal smear history, the reasons for the surgery and whether it was a total or subtotal hysterectomy. It is important to talk to your smear taker. Sometimes you may need a smear more than 3 yearly, because of abnormality, some inflammation or lack of enough cells. Your smear taker will be following evidence based guidelines. If you are over 30 and have been having annual smears because of a previous abnormal result, your smear taker will offer a HPV test which may possibly reduce the frequency of future testing. A cervical smear test is an important health check. Ideally this should be a dedicated consultation rather than an afterthought. Many practices have a nurse smear taker service which is often more comfortable for woman, offering easy accessibility and often low cost or free for eligible patients. Don’t delay – this Cervical Smear Awareness month – make sure you are up to date. Crawford Medical provides Nurse Led Smear Clinics on the following days and times. We have day clinics available Monday, Tuesday, Friday 12-5.30 pm , and Wednesday evening 5.30-6.45pm. Yours in good health – Nurse Stephanie Vance, Operational Nurse Manager

Local Body Elections 2016 – Now we’re you’re talking
“I am here for the people not politics” By Farida Master
H
ow many chickens can you raise in your backyard? And how many cockles are you allowed to catch? Rosa Chow, standing for the Howick Local Board elections, Pakuranga subdivision knows the answers. “It’s 12 chickens, though earlier you were allowed to keep only six. But you can’t keep roosters. And the number of cockles you are legally allowed to catch is 50,” she laughs saying. Having served the community since she moved to New Zealand 20 years ago, Mrs Chow says she understands the local as well as the Chinese culture and is in a position to serve the community well. “There are a lot of Chinese builders who need to be educated on how they can work together with the police. They need to be informed about the resources available, their rights and responsibilities,” she says. “We’ve been educating local construction workers and builders about ‘Snap’ - registering serial numbers of building tools on the police website

so that stolen tools can be easily traced.” An educationist who has been tutoring Business and Money Management for the last 12 years at Te Wananga in Pakuranga Mrs Chow says she has the advantage of being fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese which enables her to reach out to a cross-section of society. As chairperson of the Asian Council on Reducing Crime she is actively involved in reducing crime. “We educate Asians about the Auckland Council bylaws that affect daily lives and also involve older community members
who are visiting their children in group patrolling. It helps keep the community safe as well as give them the confidence to get out of their homes to do community work. They feel good working alongside the police,” she says. Working with different government agencies to understand the expectations and problems on both sides of the spectrum with regards to international students, is another subject the former public health nurse in New Zealand is involved with. “We are strategising to find out how best we can meet the expectations of both the students as well as the local communities that host them. “Just as locals have particular expectations of migrants, the well being of international students needs to be looked after. They come with a lot of expectations and then are overwhelmed when things turn out differently,” says Mrs Chow, who is also on the Macleans College school board. Some of the other initiatives she is keen to organise include `Cop Time’, where locals can have an informal chat with policemen.

Lois a key part of the village family Lois Abram, a well loved figure at the Howick Historical Village for 16 years, passed away last month. ecently the Pakuranga area saw the passing of a unique lady, Lois Yvonne Abram, wife of Mario and mother of four fine children. Lois came to the Howick Historical Village in about 2000 and offered her services to work with Richard Lees in the education of children. She loved being part of a team and her practical, unruffled, nature made her a great asset. Lois was an excellent seamstress, and as well as making her own costumes – 1850s dresses – she also sewed for many other staff members and volunteers. Beneath the gathered skirts of these dresses, women of that era wore petticoats, numbers of them, and Lois prided herself in having more than anyone else. She would teach the lesson about ‘clothing’ using dolls, with all their pantaloons, and petticoats and pinafores and then supervise the children using the dress-up clothing at the village. Then she would show all her own petticoats with pride to the children, who found this incredibly fascinating. As she

happily. Nothing fazed her, even when a child dropped his jumper in the Mill Pond. In waded Lois to rescue it, and doing so, slipped over and got a thorough soaking. Luckily it was summer! The village offers a number of 1850s style outdoor games and she would encourage the children; “If I can do it with snow on top (she had white hair), you can do it,” she would say. She was an expert on stilts, stalking round with great ease. I thought I was an expert too, and one Live Day we had a team challenge between all the volunteers. We were made to go on opposite teams, and the last lap saw Lois and I both racing out like Usain Bolt. We went so fast, skirts flapping, and neither fell off - we felt like Olympic Champions at the end. There are many children all over Auckland, and visitors on Live Days, who will remember Lois, with her ready smile, her love for making things and her enthusiastic participation. We were privileged to have her as part of the village family.

Cars and bikes parade for dads By Marianne Kelly

With a twin cylinder engine making 106bhp the bike can reach race track speed of 256 km/h (160 mph). “I bought it sight unseen from Wellington on TradeMe, Mr Anderson says. “I’ve done some track days on it but I also road-ride it socially with friends. I’m slowing down now.” As well as a line-up of cars and bikes, this Sunday’s Fathers Day event will feature model engineering exhibits which, Mr Waugh says, demonstrate the precision detail and hours put into the task: “It’s men showing their talent”. People with cars or bikes that they would like to show can turn up on the day, he says. Everyone is welcome. ■■ The Fathers Day ‘blokes and cars/bikes’ event will be at 9am-12.30pm this Sunday at East City Wesleyan Church, 219 Burswood Drive, Burswood/Botany. Free morning tea, barbecue and hot drinks will be available. More information phone 273-9044, email office@ecw.org.nz or online at www.ecw.org.nz ■■ Plans are also well underway for the second Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show which will be held at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga early next year.

showcase of cars and motorcycles are being groomed to strut their stuff this weekend at the East City Wesleyan Church annual Fathers Day ‘blokes & cars/ bikes’ display. “With a feast of the Olympic Games behind us, this is an opportunity for blokes and cars/bikes,” says Reverend Dr Richard Waugh, senior minister at ECW. “We will also hold a special Fathers Day service, encouraging dads to be all they can be. “Everyone is welcome and our service will be tailored in an inspirational way to the important role dads have in family life and in our wider society. “This is one of our community outreach events. It’s a regular fixture and people have come to expect it.” Malcolm Anderson, of Howick, is grooming his Porsche Cayman S and Italian Ducati 748R bike for the event. The qualified fitter and turner spent a number of years as a machine plant designer at Fisher & Paykel, but returned to his trade establishing his mechanical engineering business targeting
niche precision markets. His interest in vintage bikes was encouraged by his father. For more than 30 years, he has been a keen participant in classic motorcycle racing on his two British Velocettes. But these days, he says, the interest is more about archiving information about the bikes and their history. “The bikes are getting more fragile and valuable and there is a great amount of preparation and engineering work to keep them going. “That’s the reason I wanted a nice car, the sort of thing I can take out to drive without having to work on it first.” So in 2006 he bought the Porsche. It has a “flat six” 3.4 litre engine delivering 300 bhp giving a top speed of 256 km/h (160 mph) on a race track. “It’s my toy car. I don’t use it for business,” he says. “As I am getting older I’m not so keen about being out on motorcycles in the wet and cold.” However, for those dry, warm, summer days, he boards his Ducati bike which he bought in 2002. It’s legal for riding on public roads. While it was made specifically for world super sport racing, the Ducati was subject to a homologation rule which requires manufacturers to produce a certain number of production models eligible for racing class.
With a choice of Independent Apartments, Villas, Serviced Apartments and a Rest Home, Pakuranga Park Village now has something for everyone.

t’s January 2009 and the then Manukau Mayor Len Brown tells the Times “I’m over it”. His fight to save Manukau City as an entity in its own right is now tempered with the reality the Royal Commission is likely to recommend that Auckland be turned into a SuperCity. He says he must “temper his passion to fight hard for Manukau and its people” He also accepts Manukau was “born out of statute” and the council must respect the will of Parliament. With the tumult of two terms as Mayor of the SuperCity behind him, Mr Brown is now about to hand over the mayoral chains to a successor after the Auckland Council election in October. In his final mayoral chat with the Times he reflects that, having not long come out of hospital after a heart attack, people put him under considerable pressure to stand for the big job because of the concern that local communities needed to be heard. “They were worried that we would become too corporate and there may still be a way to go on that with the CCOs (council-controlled entities), which find it difficult to get down to local level. “The Howick Local Board
len brown
has done very well here in being close to the local community. But many are still working things out.” Hopes were high that one single council and its organisation would come up with one vision and plan. He has no doubts that Auckland Council has achieved this transformation and is delivering on it. “There was so much to do and I had to choose things that were extremely important. So transport became a singular focus and I’m really proud of where we have got to with that. “There are still 670 vehicles a day coming onto the road network. But it’s offset with 9000 extra users of public transport a day on rail. That’s huge for Auckland. After decades of building the network around cars, we are reversing the focus so that
people have a choice of bus, rail, ferry and also cycling.” He’s pleased to see a start on the new Half Moon Bay ferry pier and has no doubt that the AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative) busway between Panmure and Botany will be fast-forwarded. He’s full of praise for Nick Meyer, Botany Down’s enthusiastic proponent of light rail to the south-east, who has personally delivered to him a petition of 3000 signatures. “The debate now relates to how to address busways and decisions on light rail will be fast and decisive,” he says. The ATAP (Auckland Transport Alignment Project) and the Housing Accord which allows for fast-tracked Special Housing Areas (SHAs) have been given added impetus

by amalgamation into the SuperCity, he says. “It’s not just one mayor and the council. “Now we sit with leaders of the Government in a much more focused and efficient relationship,” he says. There has been a significant mind shift in attitudes about Aucklanders’ ability to get out of their cars, he says. “We were asked how we could get 10 per cent growth in public transport use over the last six years. We’ve grown now to 17 million people annually on rail, it’s nearly doubled. “They [Government ministers and officials] can see that was bunk and ignorance of our history. Before we ripped up the tram lines in Auckland thousands of tram trips were made every year. “Trams were a significant and efficient transport option.” Mr Brown is hoping that the culture of how to say yes and help people will grow among the council’s 8500 employees. “I don’t think we’re there yet. This is a bureaucracy and we tend to go by the book, more focused on saying ‘No’ rather than ‘how can we help you?’ When local government changes were made in Melbourne the advice was ‘give a fast yes or a fast no’. That is a culture we have yet to embrace.”

P
eople rethinking their life and where they want to be are likely to find some morsels of wisdom in Howick Little Theatre’s (HLT) production, How to be Happy. The English satire involves five characters who many people will identify with, director David Blakey says. “All the characters are incredibly interesting and I am sure most know people like that,” he says. “The play is set in England but the events could happen in New Zealand. “Members of the cast undergo major changes, all rethinking their life and where they want to be. The end message is that people have to make conscious decisions to be happy.” Writer, David Lewis, sets the play around Paul, played by Jerry Miller. With one book How to be Happy under his belt and known on television as Mr Happy, Paul has descended into despair as his books don’t sell and his marriage to Emma collapses. While he’s remarried to Katy, he’s glum about Emma’s remarriage to a rich advertising executive Graham who, unlike Paul, is not a good listener. Mr Blakey describes Paul and Emma’s daughter Daisy as the play’s catalyst. “Daisy is the most manipulative of them all,” he says. It’s Jerry Miller’s second HLT show and the part of Paul

is a bigger role than any other he has undertaken, Mr Blakey says. New to HLT are Onewhero Society of Performing Arts actors, Donna Taylor and Mike Morrow playing Katy and Graham, their first roles in metropolitan theatre. Similarly it’s a first at HLT for established Auckland theatre actor Katie Fullard, playing Emma. With Daisy coming up to her 18th birthday, Mr Blakey says he is pleased with the way 15-year-old Macleans College student, Zoe Jansson-Bush has taken to the role. “At the audition she came over as having life and vitality and the look of an 18-yearold,” he says. “The audience is going to love her as Daisy, even though on occasions she is not a sympathetic character. “During the play the audience will start to understand where the characters are coming from. In the final scene, I hope they will
be fully empathetic and tuned into what is going on in the last few moments. This will have an uplifting effect.” ■■ How to be Happy will be performed at 8pm on September 10-October 1, with 2pm matinees on September 11 and 18, at the Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga.

Howick apprentice is runner-up in the Auckland Registered Master Builders Carters 2016 Apprentice of the Year. Matt Hendl, of Howick, 25, is employed by Meadowbank company, Building Elements. The winner of the award is Pokeno carpentry apprentice, Kadin Murray, 20, employed by Licensed Renovations, while third place was awarded to 21-year-old Kees van Lieshout, of Pukekohe who is employed by AJ Carpenters. Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly says the competition not only celebrates the quality of New Zealand’s carpentry apprentices, but also helps to promote the opportunities that an apprenticeship in the trades has to offer. “The construction industry is going through an unprecedented period of growth,” he says. “We need more people to join the trades across all levels. The Apprentice of the Year competition is a fantastic way

National sales manager Rob Watson says the competition holds an important place in upholding the reputation of New Zealand’s building industry. “Apprentice of the Year is a fundamental element of Carters’ investment in partnering with and ensuring that New
Zealand’s apprentices are highly skilled, mentored and educated,” he says. Winner, Kadin will now compete against the winners from the other nine regions. As residential property prices reach dizzying heights in the Eastern Beaches real estate zone it’s intriguing to find that a choice riverside Pakuranga section could have been bought for 875 pounds (about $1500 in today’s money) in the early 1960s. Howick’s purveyor of many things, Wally Rice, has kept a large print advertisement of the Pakuranga Park Anchorage development, dubbed as 100 choice riverside sections priced from 875 pounds. They’re described as “new, high status, close in”. Marketed by Fletcher Trust, Penrose, they are billed as being on the expansive Tamaki River within just under half an hour commuting distance of Auckland City. “A rapidly developing area of better class homes where values are bound to appreciate,” the ad text says. Amenities include areas set aside for full shopping facilities, sports grounds and
a tree-shaded reserve. The sections are on pleasant quiet cul-de-sac crescents with parking bays and terminal turn-arounds provided. Safe area for children and through-way paths link reserves, shopping, school and recreational areas. The sections, the ad says, are located right on safe small-boat anchorage with full water-sport facilities. Riverina Primary and Pakuranga High School,
along with St Kentigern College, are all located close by. Provision for another primary school is also allowed in the estate. Most sections, the developer says, are flat and all are above street level. All sections are adequately drained for dry all-season under-foot conditions. Electric power, water and sewerage reticulation is provided through the entire estate and it has rich virgin soil for the keen gardener.

Indirect lights brighten rooms H
idden light sources are the perfect idea for any lighting design project in a home. Whether it’s under beds, along baseboards or above cabinets, flexible, indirect LED lighting strips can be installed virtually anywhere. These light emitting diodes are a good alternative to direct overhead lighting and they’ll provide any room with warmth and character. The traditional use of direct overhead lighting can feel cold and sterile. What’s more, the glare from these lights is rarely forgiving when it comes to a house’s blemishes and imperfections. LED strips, on the other hand, are easily installed, use little energy and have a long lifespan. They’re also perfect when looking to add a calming atmosphere or creative flair to a room. LED light strips can be placed under beds, couches or the edge of a podium bath; under or above kitchen cabinets; under office shelves; around a deck or pool. Unlike their compact fluorescent counterparts, LED bulbs give off a warm glow and virtually no glare. Tailored to indoor lighting, they evenly distribute the light to help bathe the room in soft and welcoming colours. This will help make the room feel bigger and will bring out any stylish architectural elements.
Outdoor bliss at Shades Direct There’s no denying that even at the height of summer, Auckland weather is unpredictable. This is just one of the many reasons why protection from the sun, wind and rain is essential all year round. Its frame can be powder coated in your colour of choice and when an Outsider awning is purchased from Shades Direct, clients can expect the same dedicated service from start to finish, dealing with the same person from the point of sale right through to installation in the home. If an Outsider awning doesn’t seem to fit in with a particular home decor, home owners are in luck because Shades Direct offers plenty of other outdoor shade solutions in a variety of colours and styles including outdoor blinds (both PVC and
vinyl mesh), shades sails and folding arm awnings. The best part about the service at Shades Direct is that you’re dealing directly with the manufacturer and because of this, prices have never been better! Great kitchen in new Beachlands home Gillian believes that the kitchen lies at the heart of every home so design is important, especially where the kitchen is open plan.
Everyone who walks into Gillian Richardson’s home at Jack Lachlan Dr, Beachlands, compliments her on her kitchen.
“Every time I walk into a home I am looking for ways to revamp the design so that the whole space works best, where to position each of the design elements and create the most efficient working triangle.”
The proud owner had put in a lot of time into researching her dream kitchen when they first decided to build their new home in Beachlands. That research has certainly paid off. “Everyone who walks in here says it’s a lovely kitchen,” she says “but you need to do your homework first, and think about what you like and how you normally like to work in the kitchen before you consult a professional designer.” In Gillian’s case the owners of Jag Kitchens had been family friends, so it was an easy decision to go with them. The kitchen would normally have been part of their contract with the building company and it included just a basic plan so they asked for it to be deleted so they could organise the kitchen themselves. “I wanted some different features so I had looked at various websites and decided on the features I wanted to incorporate. For instance, I liked the idea of a cupboard at the end of the island with a wine rack on each side of it” Gillian was certain that it was going to be white cabinetry, but she wanted a profiled style of door. “It looks a little more

traditional and adds more class – a little different than what most people would choose for a new home” Tucked behind the kitchen is a scullery that accommodates a microwave, bar fridge, storage for pots and pans as well as other kitchen equipment. This allows the front area of the kitchen to stay clean and uncluttered. Gillian says her two-yearold granddaughter likes the idea of a microwave at a low level under the bench top in the scullery as she enjoys watching her Nana cook. The
power points concealed at the side of the island benchtop, makes it convenient to work at the centre island with small appliances. There is plenty of room for both Gillian and husband Bill to work in the kitchen together. The “Black Galaxy” granite benchtop add a touch of luxury and beautifully pulls all the
elements together. Jag Kitchens design consultant Frances Fothergill, who worked with Gillian through the kitchen process, says that she was once a client herself. “I got my kitchen designed by Jag Kitchens, and I’ve always had a bent for creativity and design,” she says of her

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Too few berths for AB stars N
A LOVE OF SAILING: Howick Sailing Club’s Nadine Robberts, 13, with her new Starling yacht and its previous owner, Ian Gordon, who donated the boat to her. Times photo Scott Yeoman
Starling surprise ➤ From Page 24
Nadine, who lives in Dannemora, said the news came as a complete surprise to her. “My dad said that someone had donated a boat to me and I was pretty confused,” the Somerville Intermediate student said with an excited giggle. She loves being out on the water and taking risks while out there. Nadine also enjoys the challenges associated with the sport. “If you do a gybe and the wind changes direction or something, then you have to know what to do to get back

without falling in.” Howick Sailing Club member Malcolm Wyllie said he hopes the introduction of the yacht will lead to a growing number of Starlings and junior sailors at the club. Registrations for the new season are currently open online, along with “Learn to Sail” programmes held during the school holidays and on Sundays. There will also be a registration and information/open day on Sunday, September 11 from 1.30pm at the HSC Clubhouse on Howick Beach.
ew Zealand rugby has never enjoyed greater depth. However keeping the best of the rising stars in face of lucrative offers from abroad could become a major problem. Take the situation at first-five where Beauden Barrett’s brilliance has seen him upstage a still very gifted Aaron Cruden for the test starting berth. Will Cruden be content to remain a reserve? And how long will 2015 Super Rugby Player of the Year Lima Sopoaga be content to be ranked No 3? Which of course probably leaves the electrifying Damian McKenzie ranked No 4 among the first-fives and third behind Ben Smith and Israel Dagg among fullbacks in the eyes of the national selectors. Just about any other country in the world would pay a fortune to have any of the above mentioned as their starting No 10. Meanwhile while New Zealand is not going to be able to find midfield players of the calibre of Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith overnight. Those who have filled the gap have done a good job. No 12 Ryan Crotty was outstanding in the Sydney walloping of the Wallabies before having to be replaced in the second half and 21-year-old Anton Lienert-Brown was just as good in his Wellington
test debut. But for a bad injury sustained at the Rio Olympics, Sonny Bill Williams would probably have been the selectors first choice for the Wellington match. Meanwhile, having sharpened his passing, hard-hitting Malakai Fekitoa deserves the centre spot. However the best midfield back seen in Super Rugby before he suffered a bad concession was Charlie Ngatai who is equally at home wearing 12 or 13. The wing situation remains strong despite the bad shoulder injury which left World Cup hero Nehe Milner-Skidder sidelined for the season, Julian Savea struggling for confidence and dynamic Waisake Naholo hamstrung after scoring a dazzling try in the Sydney test. Replacing Naholo on the right wing was versatile Israel Dagg who scored two tries, the second a beauty when he sidestepped two defenders. With Aaron Smith undoubtedly the world’s best halfback, New Zealand has strong back up with the likes of TJ Perenara, Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Brad Wheeler. The same applies to the loose forwards where in-form Steven Luatua can’t crack a test squad that includes Kieran Reed, Jerome
Agnew’s Angle Kaino, Sam Cane, Ardie Savea, Liam Squire and Elliot Dixon. Having served a long apprenticeship in the shadow of Richie McCaw, Cane has grabbed his chance in the No 7 jersey well to hold off the challenge of Savea who, with Barrett and Dane Coles, was a key player in the Hurricanes Super Rugby championship triumph. Having defeated the awful moaning Aussies, the All Blacks should find Argentina made of sterner mettle, having pipped South Africa to avenge their first test loss to the Boks. Meanwhile the Silver Fern netballers exceeded expectations with a 26-goal win against England in Auckland despite the absence of injured Maria Tutaia and Anna Harrison whose replacements, Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Jane Watson, rose to the occasion splendidly. None, however, had a better game than athletic goal shoot Bailey Mes whose speed and accuracy was outstanding. While Australia will undoubtedly be much stronger than England, this was a confidence boosting win under new coach Janine Southby and inspirational captain Katrina Grant. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Trusted Starling finds a new home By Scott Yeoman When Ian Gordon found the old Starling yacht he had used as a teenager, still tucked away under his parent’s house, he decided it was about time someone else had a go with it. The 55-year-old sailed the Starling between the ages of 13 and 17 at the Kohimarama Yacht Club. “When I gave up sailing in that, [it] got stuck under the house and it was at my parent’s place for 30-odd years,” he said. “Then when they passed away, I had to sell the house and clean it out and came home and thought, well I’ve got to do something with this boat.” Mr Gordon, who lives in Howick, decided to donate the yacht rather than sell it. “It was a good boat to sail in, quite an easy boat. It’s too good to be firewood or something like that. I thought, it’s got to go to somebody, somebody will want it.” He was right. “I just so happened to be walking along here [Howick Beach] and thought I would come down and see the Howick Sailing Club because I only live up the road,” Mr Gordon said. “It went from there really.” Enter Marc Frewin, a key figure behind the current regeneration of the 83-year-old Howick Sailing Club. Mr Frewin knew that 13-year-old Nadine Robberts, who had joined the club and started sailing a year earlier, was looking at buying her own boat for the upcoming season. He organised the match.

Hornets lose by whisker Howick U85kg side comes close to taking final after great comeback By Scott Yeoman
T
he Howick Hornets Open Age Restricted (OAR) side suffered a devastatingly close loss at the weekend, falling one point short in what was a dramatic championship final. The U85kg side came up against Hibiscus Coast at Thompson Park in Mt Wellington on Sunday and limped away with an 18-19 defeat, despite a courageous comeback. Hornets OAR coach Kris Craft said his team started well, getting early points on the board and “working the grind with great completed sets and also great field position”. But after the first try, Hibiscus Coast kicked off and kept the Hornets down in their own half, making the most of favourable wind and field conditions. “They had us on the back foot for most of the first half as I think the players were feeling the impact of defending for most of the starting
40 minutes,” Craft said. “As soon as half time came around I just said to the players, we now have the favouring conditions so let’s try focus on the game plan, retain possession of the ball and kick to the corners with a solid defence.” It was 12-6 to Hibiscus Coast at half time and after the break they scored again, increasing their lead to 18-6. But the Hornets boys didn’t give up. They scored
twice to tie the game up. With time running out, Hibiscus Coast kicked a drop goal to nudge ahead, 19-18. In the final two minutes, the Hornets advanced 70m down the field and were stopped 20m short of the try line. Their last ditch effort – an attempted drop goal – failed, just shaving the post. Craft gave full credit to both teams. His last words of the season were for his
boys, however. “I’m so proud and privileged to have coached all the players as it’s been such a great season with some great times,” he said. “We all have grown such great respect for each other that has formed a great friendship with each other that we will now have forever.” The Hornets OAR team will travel to Sydney for a five-day tour this month.
