Old man robbed F

ive thugs who allegedly invaded the home of an elderly Pakuranga man leaving him bruised in the early hours of Saturday morning stole his new Suzuki Swift which was found on Sunday with six people in it. The 85-year-old man was taken to hospital by St John Ambulance paramedics with minor injuries and was discharged later that afternoon. Counties Manukau Police’s CIB closed off the area and forensic evidence technicians were seen examining the property in Millen Ave

on the day of the robbery. A neighbour who did not want to be named said he was asleep when the victim knocked on his door asking for help after the incident which happened at about 2.45am. He appeared to have suffered head injuries and his new Suzuki Swift car and TV had been stolen but he did not seem distressed, said the neighbour. “He was more angry that someone had been in his house.” Counties Manukau East CIB head, detective senior sergeant Kevin Tiernan, said that five peo-

ple were involved in the robbery and search warrants are being conducted today. On Sunday night, the stolen car was located and six teenagers, four of whom were under 17, were found in the vehicle. They were charged for being unlawfully in a stolen vehicle but not the assault and robbery, said Mr Tiernan. Sensible Sentencing Trust youth advocate and local Jess McVicar issued a release following the attack, saying anyone guilty of home invasion should be treated as

a terrorist.“People should be safe in their home – especially the elderly – anyone committing home invasion should face the full force of the law and be charged and sentenced as terrorists.” Ms McVicar said there has not been enough information released to the public. “Once again, the system is protecting the criminal. I do realise it is an on-going investigation but we should know the colour and number plate of this car so that anyone who spots it can inform the police.”

GOING UP: $120,000 in 3 months By NATALIE BRITTAN A couple is stunned to hear their former Golflands home has sold for $120,000 more than its original sale price after just three months. Tony and Pat Eversden’s family home of 25 years sold for $1,030,000 in May and went under the hammer early this month for $1,150,000. Mrs Eversden says Harcourts Howick agent Anton Huang had organised a pre-auction offer from a buyer and they had accepted it. However, it was many weeks after the settlement that the buyer discovered that the hot water had been disconnected from the mains. Mrs Eversden says his actions did not reflect that of someone who intended to live in the house. “How do you live in the

house in the middle of winter with no hot water? It sounds pretty fishy to me.” Not long after, the house was again listed in August by Mr Huang. “I was told the reason for selling it was because [the buyer] had a job on the North Shore so it’s too far for him but I don’t know if there’s any truth in that,” says Mrs Eversden. Mrs Eversden, now living in Tauranga, says while the figures don’t bother her, she is worried about locals being pushed out of the market. “It’s not right. Kiwis just cannot get on the property ladder. “I’m not happy [the buyer] hasn’t lived in it. It’s going all over Auckland and I didn’t think it would happen to me. This Government isn’t doing anything for me.” She says the Government

should be making sure that people who purchase houses live here for a start and believed the man who bought her house was an overseas buyer. Chinese real estate agents are pocketing the profit easily too, says Mrs Eversden. “[Kiwi] real estate agents can’t speak the language so it’s Chinese selling to Chinese. These real estate agents must be laughing all the way to the bank!” When the Times contacted Mr Huang, he said he was under “strict” instruction not to speak to the media but he got the impression that his client had intended to live in the house at the time of purchase. “The market has moved up so much and people have different requirements,” he says.

Harcourts Howick principal David Clifton declined to comment about overseas buyers but said Harcourts CEO Hayden Duncan would love to talk about it. In July the Labour Party released figures leaked by a Barfoot & Thompson employee claiming that nearly 40 per cent of home buyers at an Auckland agency were Chinese. The two-year ‘bright line’ capital gains tax is scheduled to come into force next week, on October 1, which means buyers who sell a residential property that is not their main home within two years of purchase will pay tax and will be required to have an IRD number. TIDY PROFIT: Above, this Golflands home has increased more than $100,000 in price in just over three months. Times photo Wayne Martin

Darling and the pirates, the rest of the cast will double up performing half of the performances. It’s a good opportunity for more students to have an opportunity to play the roles, says the director Fiona Bailey. “It’s a huge challenge rehearsing everything twice. There are a lot of deja vu moments trying to get both casts doing the same things.” As well as suspending Peter Pan in the air, she says the set, which covers the Darling family house, Neverland, an underground house, a pirate ship and a mermaid lagoon, is challenging. Sixteen-year-old Macleans College student Jehangir has been with HCYT since he was eight and has read

the book and watched the movie of Peter Pan. “The character is very innocent, but with the lost boys he is the man of the house. So it’s hard to get the two sides of the character,” he says. Wendy is played by Jennifer Cheuk, 15, who has been with HCYT since she was four. She says she’s been working hard on the role because Wendy is not the most feminine and motherly so it is a challenge to portray her. “I watched two movies, the Disney one and the other using human characters. It was good getting into the character. I really like Wendy. She’s a bit precocious at times.” Nathan Brown, 15, from

Ms Bailey says the cast has been excellent. “Sixty is a lot to have in one room but they are all fantastic, wellbehaved and focused. “It’s such a lovely story about Peter who wants to stay a child. In today’s day and age children grow up so quickly so it’s nice to retain that innocence and joy, and a love of life,” she says. “It’s a good family story, suitable for the entire family five years and up.” ■■ Peter Pan plays at 1 and 4pm on October 1 and 2, at 10am, 1pm and 4pm on October 3, and at 11am and 2pm on October 4, at Harlequin Theatre, 563 Pakuranga Rd, Howick.

STUMPED: Pohutukawa stump on a Pakuranga Road berm after Auckland Council’s decision to remove trees to make way for double-decker buses.

AT has made a financial contribution to Auckland Council’s planting programme for planting new trees to replace all the trees being removed. The Howick and Eastern

ifteen double-decker buses will take to the south-east’s roads next month, ringing the death knell for 19 trees, including two pohutukawa, in the eastern suburbs. The pohutukawa located on Kilkenny Drive, Dannemora, and Pakuranga Road, Pakuranga, were not fully mature but were considered to either have their main stem or most of their canopy within 0.5m of the kerb, says an Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson. A survey was carried out to identify trees east of Panmure that encroached within 0.5m of the road at ground level and 4.25m high (the height of a double-decker bus). Around 450 trees were identified as a risk and most required just a minor prune. “In some areas trees overhang the road, and if a double decker bus was to collide with a major branch it could have significant consequences,” he says. However, removal of trees is a last resort and AT worked with arborists to identify practical alternative solutions but none were found for the cases. Where possible, AT will avoid the need to prune or remove trees, says the AT spokesperson. For example, the mature pin oak trees in Cockle Bay Road, Cockle Bay were saved by installing road markings to formalise a parking lane meaning buses won’t need to drive close to the kerb.

Outsourcing payroll could be the best thing some businesses have ever done, and now with a local business offering two months’ service for free, it can only get better. So what are the pros and cons of outsourcing accounting and payroll needs? Usually they vary depending on company size, says Eric Neal (pictured), owner of Ace Business Solutions in Botany. “For smaller companies, processing the payroll in-house is often a question of having the right person to do it without compromising valuable time,” he says. “If the owner or his/her partner can do the admin, is computer savvy, enjoys crunching numbers, has a grasp on bookkeeping and has the time and energy, then processing their own payroll is probably the best option.” Medium-sized companies often employ a dedicated payroll person making an in-house solution viable. However, an important factor to consider is confidentiality, says Eric. “Would you be happy if someone else in your company knew how much everyone was earning or other detailed financial information? Another advantage of outsourcing payroll is that dedicated payroll providers familiarise themselves with laws regarding wages and sal-

Can Mr Whippy be a Kiwi? By Rumer-Grace Archer University of Auckland student Julie Zhu’s quirky short film Mr Whippy, a final project for her Honours in Screen Production, follows a Chinese Mr Whippy driver from a pub to a fish and chip shop in his attempt to fit into the Kiwi image. The 22 year-old from Botany thought of the story idea after spotting a number of Mr Whippy trucks with Chinese drivers and thought it was interesting to see a Kiwi icon juxtaposed with an immigrant figure.

Ms Zhu believes this story is important because she feels New Zealand often praises itself on having good race relations while there are still instances of racism every day. “One example of the everyday racism that occurs here in the film is a scene where Mr Whippy goes to buy fish and chips and a pakeha customer walks in and asks Mr Whippy if they are still open, assuming that because Mr Whippy is Chinese, he is an employee of the takeaway shop,” Ms Zhu says. This story resonates with Ms Zhu’s Chinese family, having

moved to New Zealand when she was four years old. “I am often praised for my Kiwi accent, but my parents who still retain accents even after two decades here do not share that privilege. “They are still seen as foreign,” Ms Zhu says. She is grateful for the invaluable support from local

businesses, especially Mr Whippy, and local residents for providing her with filming locations around East Auckland. Ms Zhu is making a call

Sailing club set ablaze By Natalie Brittan

CHARRED: Pakuranga Sailing Club was damaged by a fire on Sunday morning. Photo supplied

arm Cove locals hoping for a lie in on Sunday morning were woken by sirens from fire trucks racing to a fire at Pakuranga Sailing Club. Fire fighters were called to the blaze in Bramley Drive just before 7am, along with two appliances from Howick Fire Station and one from Mt Wellington. Howick station officer Richard Knight had just started his shift when the fire broke out and was involved in the aftermath. “We think it may have been caused by a heated object that was left on the deck after a func-

tion the previous night,” he said. No one was in the building and after about an hour, the last of the flames were snuffed out with fire service workers remaining on scene until 9.30am. Mr Knight said there was fire damage to the decking and kitchen areas upstairs as well as the boat storage area downstairs, with smoke damage throughout the building. Pakuranga Sailing Club captain Graham Crooks told the Times that the Auckland Council-owned building was a “big charred mess”. The club has been operating from the site since 1964 and the Young Mariners and

Scouts groups joined shortly after it was rebuilt around 2000. Mr Crooks said he was waiting for a report of the damage from insurance assessors. “The council do their own insurance so we’re fortunate from a building point of view that we will be re-housed quickly and effectively.” Club members have been to retrieve and clean their own privately-owned boats which were unharmed and stored in an attached dinghy shed, said Mr Crooks. But the biggest loss has been the club’s three patrol boats, which were destroyed in the fire

including the committee boat (a 5m Boston Whaler), rescue boat and a disused rigid inflatable boat (RIB). Mr Crooks is unsure as to the cost of the damage and would not comment about the function that was held at the club as insurers were still investigating. “I’m pretty gutted because the club’s been my life and joy,” said Mr Crooks. And the same goes for commodore Wayne Barnes who is currently overseas. “Wayne’s going to come back to awful news,” said Mr Crooks. To see more photos of the damage, visit pakurangasailing. weebly.com.

Most of us can’t wait for summer to arrive. So check out a timely illustrated talk by Auckland artist Juliette Laird entitled ‘Dreaming of Summer’, which was inspired by the story of 733 Polish children of Pahiatua who came to New Zealand in 1944. A phenomenal art installation featuring hand-made branches attached to living trees is a metaphor for the way people find a way of making homes in a new country and culture.

No ‘premier parks’ By Marianne Kelly

R

emoval of the ‘premier parks’ designation by Auckland Council should not be of concern to southeast residents, says Howick Local Board chairman David Collings. “Nothing’s changed,” he says. “It’s about the use of the parks which is why Barry Curtis Park was elevated so high in the hierarchy because it is the biggest in the ward involving sport and passive use.” The term ‘premier park’ was part of the former Manukau City Council parks strategy, ‘making connections’. They included Mangemangeroa Reserve, Barry Curtis, Macleans, Point View and Totara Parks, Murphy’s Bush and Pigeon Mountain.

The designations were taken over when Auckland Council was formed. However, now they are labelled as local and sports parks under local board control. Mr Collings says the ‘making connections’ document was based around establishing a continuum of walkways. Allan Riley, chairman of the Friends of Mangemangeroa is concerned that removal of the ‘premier’ designation coincides with budgetary and maintenance cut-backs. But Mr Collings says funding is assets-driven. “Barry Curtis Park will be given more funding because it’s a bigger park. The bigger the asset, the more operational money will be available. “Nothing will change, unless something of high mainte-

nance was to go into Mangemangeroa Reserve. It doesn’t mean we see the reserve as any less precious than other open spaces. “It’s a substantial esplanade reserve, but that doesn’t mean it is seen as any different. Even a neighbourhood reserve in a cul-de-sac can be just as important for different reasons as is Barry Curtis for its passive and sports use or Mangemangeroa because of its environmental value. Auckland Mayor Len Brown says spending on parks hasn’t changed. The level of investment in parks has been maintained. “But each local board has a different focus. If they want to determine a level of premier parks and funding around them, then they can.”

surprised: At Howick Rotary’s charter night 54th birthday dinner at the Howick Bowling Club are, from left, Times photo Reay Neben Rotarian Geoff Thompson, Valerie Roy, Howick Rotary president John Savory and John Roy.

Double surprise for Val and John It was a double and unexpected surprise for the Roy family at a special charter night dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Howick on Tuesday. Businessman and former Honorary Polish Consul to New Zealand John Roy and his wife Valerie who

has been long-involved in the community were each presented the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship award for services to the community. Both were surprised and thrilled to be recognised by their community. “It was difficult to keep it a

secret from John,” says Mrs Roy, as she had been asked to make sure he was there to receive his award. Supported by 13 members of the Roy family, the real surprise was that Valerie was recognised as well for her services to the community.

crowds cheered wildly, is now a sepia-toned snapshot of the past. With all the Health and Safety regulations in place, there was a brake put on the long-held tradition of rolling down the bylanes of Howick in a trolley without a care in the world. However, the school gala that has earned the reputation of being one of the best in the city continues to garner the excitement and rate high

as a popular attraction. Like every year, a huge turnout is expected at the gala on Saturday, September 26 from 10am to 2pm. The modern day take on the trolley derby this year is the ‘trolley grocery grab’ at the local New World Supermarket. One lucky winner will get a chance to race around the supermarket, with a chance to fill up their trolley in a set time.

DID YOU KNOW? Although rugby is relatively unknown in the USA, believe it or not they are the current Olympic champions (beating France 17-3 in the final the last time rugby was an Olympic event in 1924). USA is also the most successful rugby team in the Olympics – they won the event twice in four Olympic Games (in the 1920 Antwerp Games and the 1924 Paris Games). France holds the most medals as they won the first Olympic title in 1900, and added two silver medals to their tally in 1920 and 1924. Australia was crowned the winners in 1908. Rugby 7s will be part of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

e’re all benefitting from faster healthcare and utilising the available assistance to improve the quality of New Zealanders’ lives. During the last quarter to June 30, more than 250,000 New Zealanders were admitted to, discharged, or transferred from an emergency department (ED) within six hours, meeting the Government’s health target for the second consecutive three-month period. In the Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) area, the rate was 97 per cent, which is a great result and reflection of the excellent work and care delivered by its ED staff during the sickly winter months. More people are also receiving colonoscopies, with 36,076 performed nationally over the past year to June. There has been a huge improvement in the amount of urgent colo-noscopies being performed within the 14-day target, from 55.2 per cent to 74.8 per cent, which shows real progress. One area that’s particularly pleasing is the uptake

They’re now offered by 98 per cent of general practices across Botany and the country, which gives coverage to 99 per cent of the nation’s 13-year-olds and younger ones. The total number of Kiwis aged 13 and under to benefit from the expanded scheme of free GP visits and prescriptions is now more than 750,000, and the number of doctor’s practices offering the service is more than 1000. The success of this new policy illustrates our commitment to supporting families in giving their children the best start in life. Removing the cost of taking a child to the doctor is making a real difference to thousands of families.

Richard Lindon (1816 - 1887) and William Gilbert (17991877) started making balls for Rugby school out of hand stitched, four-panel, leather casings and pigs’ bladders. Both men owned boot and shoe making businesses located close to Rugby school. They turned their skills to the making of balls for the boys of Rugby school. It is the shape of the pigs bladder which is reputed to have given the rugby ball its oval shape. The balls also varied in size depending upon how large the pig’s bladder was. In those early days it was necessary to ask for volunteers to inflate the ball for it was not a job that was sought after. The pigs bladder would be blown up while still in its very smelly ‘green state’ solely by lung power down the snapped stem of a clay pipe which was inserted into the opening of the bladder.

Students from a local school have proven they have the gift of gab after winning top prizes. Three out of five speakers from Our Lady Star of the Sea School in Howick won first prize at the annual Auckland Primary Principal’s Association speech competition held for students years 5 to 8 recently. Year 5 student Jaiden Beltran came first in Tagalog; year 6 student Katherine Cao came first in Cantonese; and year 6 student Somi Park came first in Korean, and the other two students were finalists in Mandarin and English. English language assistant Jan Botherway says it’s a great achievement for the school. “We are very proud of them and all our speech participants. We would encourage all schools to be involved in this competition in 2016.” Ms Botherway says the school understands the importance of students keeping their mother tongue and encourages them to use it as much as possible.

others in Howick, Orakei, Albert-Eden, Devonport/ Takapuna, are being forced to pay rates way above the average residential city rate of $2365, and that is due to the council implementing a very low Uniform Annual General Charge (UAGC), which we all pay equally, of $385. The other components of your rates that we in Manukau pay equally are the Uniform Rubbish Charge of $225.56 and Transport Levy of $114. The balance of your rates are then levied on your Capital Value. So the higher your CV, the more rates you get to pay! Legislation allows the UAGC to be set at a maximum of 30 per cent of rates revenue which equates to around $950. However, the council has set the UAGC at around only 12.5 per cent of rates revenue, which means more of your rates (the general rate) are based on your property value and which therefore causes huge differences in rates across the city. If the UAGC was raised to the maximum, instead of a rates bill of $4300 pa, Mr Champion’s rates would be more like $3475. Average residential rates are - Otara $1665, Papakura $1676, Manurewa $1702, Howick $2549, Devonport/Takapuna $3200, Orakei $3752. Maureen Forrester Cockle Bay

ast Wednesday at 12.30pm we parked our car at the top of our driveway to get the mail out of our mailbox. As it happened, our grandson was playing across the yard and we talked to him briefly. As usual, we left the car door open for that short exercise. However, on this day, an “opportunist” drove through the streets. He saw the open door, stopped the car and grabbed a handbag with credit cards, driver’s licence and a number of personal items, literally within speaking distance from us. It is unbelievable what makes these culprits think they can do to people that worked hard for their possessions. We have CCTV cameras and have provided footage to the police. We would appreciate if you

Is the refugee issue a matter for Islam? Your front page article (Times, September 17) belatedly addresses (in part) questions which should have been raised before now. Why should we be so quick to ‘put up our hands to help’ without first seriously considering the possible ramifications and the cost? We have been manipulated by the international news media. We have been told on television that the world has been shocked by pictures of a little refugee boy who drowned, along with his mother, when their boat capsized. Really? Why should that capture the world’s attention if all the horrors that have gone on before have supposedly not? Our kneejerk response (as expected) was to demand that our Government should increase drastically our immigration quota without a second thought. Your article is one reason for further thought. My initial question was “Why are not these people fleeing to where they should be most welcome and where they should be most comfortable? Muslim countries! Why is Saudi Arabia willing

to spend a fortune on building Muslim mosques - at least 200 of them - in the ‘other’ countries in which they settle? Islam could house them with the least disruption, and would they not prefer to remain among Muslims? There is a word in the Koran which means ‘biological jihad’ (warfare). Simply by increasing their numbers through normal reproduction they can obtain eventual control of a country (and that is Islam’s ultimate purpose) by peaceful means when they have sufficient numbers. Some, such as France, have almost reached a tipping point now. It has been claimed that many of the ‘refugees’ are simply terrorists. Islamic sources are already claiming this. What screening process could possibly elicit this? There are many who claim hardship now in this country. The Government is in no hurry to help them. How can we accommodate countless numbers of refugees without simply ignoring the present needy? Would we give preference to the refugees over the equally needy? That would happen. Harvey Rosieur Howick

Not all refugees may be genuine It was very heartening to finally have someone speak out against the so-called refugee crisis (Times, September 17). I agree wholeheartedly with Mr Roy that these socalled Syrian refugees are not all genuine refugees. We must carefully screen who amongst these are truly deserving of our help and who are not. John Key should not have immediately buckled under public pressure to upping the refugee quota in New Zealand. We need to use our heads and not let common sense be swayed by emotive, one-sided photos and stories written by irresponsible journalists. The other side of the story is not being told - about how many of these ‘refugees’ are attacking locals, stealing and demanding things which they absolutely have no right to do. Beggars cannot be choosers but the attitude and arrogance at which they are demanding to be let in does not bode well for the future of the EU countries. I am not saying that we

should not show compassion; but compassion must be tempered with using one’s head and being cautious. Lilia Sevillano Howick

Is his white privilege threatened? Re: ‘Syrians not refugees’ (Times, September 17). So an old pale, male (rather stale) guy is professing to know what these Syrians have been through - just to make sure that his white privilege isn’t threatened. I wonder what he has to say about immigrants from India and China who are legal, tax-paying members of New Zealand society. How about he addresses the real issue that two Western nations (who believe that they’re the world’s watchdogs) started an illegal war in Iraq that destabilised an already volatile region of the world over false reason to find “weapons of mass destruction”. Disgusted by this man’s judgment of people who may be suffering real hardships just like he did. Ryan Crane Email

• 50g Tararua butter • 4 tbs flour • 450ml milk • 200g Meadowfresh grated tasty cheese • 300g Budget lasagne • ½ cauliflower, chopped into small florets • 2 x 185g Pams tuna, drained • 1 bunch chives, chopped • 400g Wattie’s flavoured tomatoes • 1 bunch of spinach Also need: salt, pepper, olive oil

Method:

Heat the oven to 180ºC. Roast the cauliflower instead of boiling. It can cook while the oven warms up and you make the sauce. Just drizzle a little oil over, season and roast for about 15 minutes or until starting to brown. Then remove from the oven. Melt the butter in a pot. Heat the milk in the microwave until warm/hot. Add the flour to the butter. Stir and slowly add the hot milk till smooth. Turn down the heat and add the cheese. When it has melted turn off. Season. Mix together the cauliflower, tuna, ½ the chives and 4 tbs of cheese sauce. Put half across the bottom of a small oven proof dish. Add a layer of lasagne with half the tomatoes. Add the rest of the tuna mix. Add more lasagne sheets and pour over rest of tomatoes. Add the remaining cheese sauce on top and bake for 35 minutes or the lasagne sheets are cooked and the top is browned.

Cook the spinach and serve with a generous amount of lasagne sprinkled with chives. ➤ AND MORE: • You could pre-boil the lasagne

sheets and roll up some filling in each sheet to make cannelloni. • If you don’t want to roast the cauliflower, then boil some water and blanch the

cauliflower till just soft. It needs to be a little firm. Then drain well and season. • Add some pitted olives and capers to the tuna mix.

quarter of Kiwis argue about the cleanliness of the bathroom on a regular basis with those they share their homes with, according to a consumer satisfaction survey that looks into the habits of Kiwis and their use of bathroom cleaners. Jose George, general manager of Canstar New Zealand, which conducted the survey, says this statistic is most likely also caused by the fact that half of New Zealanders rate the bathroom as their least favourite room in the house to clean. “There could also be an element of different standards of cleanliness coming into play in houses with many different people using the same bathroom.”

People under the age of 30 are the most likely to only clean their bathroom when it looks visibly dirty (eight per cent) compared with those aged between 60 and 69 at two per cent. Close to two-thirds of Kiwis clean their bathroom on a weekly basis (65 per cent) and a smaller portion bust out the bathroom cleaner fortnightly (14 per cent). The number one bathroom irritability is a tie between finding hair in plugholes and finding someone has urinated on the toilet seat (29 per cent). Leaving a wet towel on the floor rather than hanging it up is a distant third when it comes to irksome bathroom habits (16 per cent) and a small number of Kiwis (12 per cent)

are annoyed when the toilet paper is facing the wrong way. Unsurprisingly, it’s the men who are most annoyed at having to unravel hair from their shower plug (31 per cent) compared with women (27 per cent), while the tables have turned when it comes to the toilet seat. Women are more likely to be bothered by finding a wet toilet seat (37 per cent) than men are (20 per cent). Close to 60 per cent of Kiwis say they always try to avoid public bathrooms (58 per cent) with women (61 per cent) more likely than men (54 per cent) to avoid using an unfamiliar toilet. Those under the age of 30 are most likely to steer clear of public loos (67 per cent).

ife insurer and retirement savings provider AMP says 62 per cent of respondents attributed lack of funding while 33 per cent didn’t know where to start and 31 per cent were afraid. The independent survey was conducted as AMP launched its 2015 Scholarship programme aiming to help talented, passionate and determined Kiwis who are ready to do their thing. Jeff Ruscoe, AMP’s chief customer officer says it’s a shame to hear that people are missing out on achieving their dreams because of a lack of funding, not knowing where to start and fear. “The reality is these are absolutely legitimate concerns when going outside the comfort zone. But with enough help, planning and sheer grit, we know that many people can achieve their goals,” he says. Over the last 17 years AMP has helped more than 160 Kiwis achieve their dreams, by providing $2 million worth of scholarships to everyday New Zealanders,

ADD ROOM, ADD VALUE THE OUTSIDER

SPELLBOUNd: Farm Cove Intermediate Area Two and Four students were spellbound as ‘Nanogirl’, aka nanotechnologist, Dr Michelle Dickinson, talked about her work that involves manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular and supra-molecular – in other words absolutely tiny – scale. She said: “You must believe in your dreams, whether you want to be an architect, an engineer or an author.” Times file photo

providing them support and funding so they can do their thing and own their own tomorrow, Mr Ruscoe says. The survey also revealed that New Zealanders are real go-getters and aren’t shy when it comes to putting

that famous Kiwi “can-do” approach into action, with 74 per cent of respondents saying they have pursued a dream or significant goal, up five per cent on last year. Incredibly, he says, out of the respondents that had

pursued a dream, nearly nine out of 10 (88 per cent) said their dream was successful. Most attributed this success to “perseverance and determination” (77 per cent), “hard work” (67 per cent), “time” (36 per cent) and “family support (33 per cent), demonstrating the resilient and hard-working nature of the Kiwi culture. Age was also no barrier, with three in four people (76 per cent) saying a dream can be achieved at any age. The survey findings show that Kiwis aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves. And the results also disclosed how selfless people are, with nearly three in five (59 per cent) saying family members, friends (30 per cent) and the wider public (27 per cent) would also benefit from them achieving their dream. When asked where they would go if they needed financial funding to pursue a dream, most respondents said a bank (59 per cent), family (34 per cent), or the Government (23 per cent).

He has been getting great grades (A’s) and has landed himself a great job at a civic engineering company at year’s end. We would like to thank you for the expert training and tuition which we believe was material in Arran’s success.”

We are only a few weeks away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well

I use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

SCHOOL HOLIDAY EXAM PREPARATION CLASSES SEPT 28 - OCT 9

TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

he hopes of more than 47,000 New Zealanders are dashed, after the last man standing in the TAB’s One Punt at a Million competition was eliminated on Monday. Canterbury security guard Russell Walker stunned the nation after he became the only New Zealander to correctly predict the results of the first five games in the tournament, including Japan’s shocking 34-32 defeat of South Africa. For the 22-year-old to stay in with a shot at the million bucks, Uruguay had to defeat Wales in Cardiff on Monday. Sadly that was not to be. Wales won 54-9. But the Rugby World Cup dream is not over for Russell Walker. To reward him for

his brilliance, the TAB is sending him on an allexpenses paid trip to the Rugby World Cup semifinals and final with 2011 RWC hero Stephen ‘Beaver’ Donald. TAB bookmaker Mark

Stafford says the TAB had no plans to put up a consolation prize. “That was all it was originally going to be – one punt at a million.” “But an incredible effort is worthy of an incredible

reward; the fact that Russell managed to pick what can only be described as one of the biggest upsets in sporting history is amazing and deserves some recognition,” says Stafford. Walker will join Donald and 300 other All Black fans on the ‘Beaver Fan Flight’ through All Black Tours. Donald says he can’t wait to give Walker what promises to be a truly unique rugby experience. “It’s going to be epic. Practicing my commentary skills at 40,000 feet and sharing some yarns with this young lad will be a great way to start the trip of a lifetime.” Stafford says while he didn’t expect the competition to end so early, the TAB is delighted with the buzz it’s created.

Expect the unexpected Times reporter Rumer-Grace Archer talked to Pita Alatini this week about the first Rugby World Cup matches over the weekend Japan beating South Africa has been the best thing for this Rugby World Cup. Not good for South Africa obviously but in terms of the buzz around the tournament now, people are taking note. The Japanese were desperate for a first win in the RWC and they had a plan and stuck to it for the whole 80 minutes. With regards to the All Blacks’ first game, I mentioned that Argentina would be tough first up and they definitely were. People sometimes forget that RWC is very different from normal test matches. The carrot is much bigger and, so too, the audience, therefore the teams will want to be at their very best in every game. Copping those yellow cards, ABs captain Richie McCaw and centre Conrad Smith both agreed that it was definitely a “brain explosion” moment and it makes them human I

guess. However, I believe nothing serious happened to the team. They were up against a very committed Argentinean side that were out to win. They were definitely rusty and probably a little anxious at times but when they broke through, they showed the class they possess. This is one of the strengths of this team. They are able to fight through the tough times to get the result. Fitness is definitely a factor in their success. Like we saw, as teams tire, the All Blacks manage to find another gear and lift the intensity. There is a lot of steel in our squad and we will need it as we draw closer to play-offs. For their next game against Namibia, I think the team will be focusing on accuracy and finishing off the opportunities they create. They would

not have been happy with their basic skill level like catching, passing and decision-making, so will be looking for improvement there. Furthermore, there will be the stiff competition amongst the boys to get a start in the upcoming games. I did hear coach Steve Hansen say previously that everyone will get game time in the first two games so hopefully we can expect the boys

Pit a Alatini Rugby World Cup that get their chance to impress. In terms of some of the other teams playing better then we may have expected, especially Tonga v Georgia, it goes to show that every team nowadays have the resources to prepare well to compete at the RWC. I was disappointed at the Tongans going down to Georgia but at the same time the Georgians played very well. I did expect a bit more from the Tongan side as they had a good build up leading into this game. Other results were pretty much as expected except the Japan game but I’m happy the RWC has kicked off and look forward to more upsets - except against the All Blacks. ■ Do you know anyone at the RWC? RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, September 24, 2015 — 27

Jimmy: “I was the Cup’s keeper” By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER Jimmy Biggam from Bucklands Beach is incredibly proud of the accomplishments he has made in his lifetime. Having worked in the New Zealand television industry for “40-odd” years, he has had experiences people could only dream of. The chatty Scotsman worked as a World Cup keeper of sorts, handling the Web Ellis Cup and ensuring it got safely on and off the field and locked away “so no one stole it” he said. Now that the 2015 Rugby World Cup is underway, we hope that cup is not too far out of reach for the All Blacks. During the first Rugby World Cup which was held in New Zealand in 1987, Biggam was a production manager, in charge of officially starting the game.

He recalls being told to “hurry up and start the game already”, often joking around with his co-workers. Biggam also worked at many other domestic and international rugby games held in New Zealand. It was in 1973 that he started his career in New Zealand Television working for TV2 with hosts such as the so-called ‘mother of the nation’, the former news presenter Judy Bailey and also worked on a number of entertainment shows including the Billy T James comedy show. Biggam was part of the TV crew when the Royal Family visited New Zealand in 1983 and has personally met the Queen, even though she mistook him for someone else. Although some of his memory may be failing him now, Biggam says “those kinds of things you never let go of.”

Sonny Bill rides to the rescue of rusty ABs W

hatever one’s views of Sonny Bill Williams as a rugby player even his fiercest critics had to concede he was the shining knight who saved the All Blacks’ honour in their Rugby World Cup clash against Argentina on the hallowed turf of Wembley on Monday. This on a day the near 90,000 mob booed future knight Richie McCaw when our revered leader tarnished his armour by foot tripping an opponent. It was, said coach Steve Hansen, a dumb act with which McCaw wished he had not done. And that was Hansen’s verdict for Conrad Smith too when the centre also copped a yellow card. It was a rusty All Black performance before Williams came off the reserves bench to lead the charge only for Nehe MilnerSkudder to drop a great offload from him that should have led to a try. Earlier at least three others were bombed because of sloppy passes

Agnew’s Angle

or dropped balls. This was definitely not a vintage performance from a team eager to defend their world crown. However it is to be hoped that the selectors don’t lose faith in the electrifying Milner-Skudder for failing to capitalise on Williams’ brilliant offload for he still has much to offer. As a match, however, it paled when compared against the magnificent Japanese 34-32 triumph against South Africa which surpassed David’s slingshot slaying of Goliath so many years ago. Still it did serve as a warning that anything is possible as Georgia also showed in their defeat of Tonga. Just as in the Rugby Championship loss to Australia in Sydney the All Blacks failed to cope well when caught flat-footed and bereft of ideas against

the rushed defence of Argentina. Daniel Carter kicked his goals and generally took good options. But he was too content to be a link rather than attempt a break after his outside backs struggled to penetrate. While Julian Savea, Conrad and Ben Smith had solid games, halfback Aaron Smith was the only one to really play to his true ability before Williams and fellow substitute Beauden Barrett provided the necessary spark. Nippy Aaron Smith’s try was beautifully taken and Sam Cane got the other from an overlap to make up for his earlier dropping of Willlams’ pass. Wyatt Crockett, Charlie Faumuina and Cane lifted the forward effort on a day skipper McCaw, Kieran Read, Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock toiled manfully against a very good Pumas pack. But the real heroes of the first round were Japan, superbly coached and captained by Eddie

Jones and Michael Leitch respectively. Jones, a former Australian coach who helped Jake White mentor the Springboks to World Cup glory at the 2007 tournament, has produced a super fit Japanese team that scrums well, tackles tigerishly and has smart backs who move the ball sharply and possess plenty of pace. Leitch’s decision to scrum rather than settle for an equalising penalty goal in the final minute was a brave one which reaped its just reward with the match winning try. The Japanese’s joyous reaction to that gave the lie to the old belief that Asians are inscrutable and not given to displaying emotion. However that shock result should provide a wake-up call to a proud Springboks side hell-bent on making amends when it counts most.

Saint Kents race to gold By RUMER-GRACE ARCHER Saint Kentigern College proved their cycling skills at the Auckland Secondary Schools Road Race at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura this week. A total of nine students represented their college at the event, with two senior teams and a junior

girl’s team. Seniors Cameron Low and Isabella Richards both won gold in their races closely followed by Liam Ward and Hanna English placing second. Both senior three-person teams also made their school proud by winning gold in both races. The junior girl’s three-person team humbly placed third.

arter Hall from Maraetai is a 10-year-old taekwondo prodigy. He was the only Kiwi to compete in the Australian National Taekwondo Championships last month, winning gold medals in junior patterns, sparring in his weight division and in speciality (flying kicks and jumps). Carter was also invited to join in the sparring competition for a higher weight group and won a bronze medal. To top it off, he also won best overall junior coloured belt and has recently been graded up to a red belt. The inspiring Beachlands School student started taekwondo when he was seven years old at the Ji Shin Maraetai Club under the instruction of Brett Kimberley and now also receives coaching from Mr Carl van Roon from van Roon Martial Arts. Carter not only enjoys the art of taekwondo but also the opportunity it provides to meet new people. “It’s fun to learn cool moves and build friendships,” he says. Taekwondo is undoubtedly a huge part of Carter’s life,

he trains twice a week at his Ji Shin club, has one-on-one training with Mr van Roon and is part of a group cadet squad training in the weekends. The Hall’s garage at home is

even kitted out as a Dojang so Carter can practice taekwondo at home. Carter has high hopes for the future, aiming to represent New Zealand at the world championships.
