GALA SUCCESS: Cars lined the streets outside the annual Owairoa Primary School gala on Saturday and inside the school gates, it was a fabulous festival of fun. Good fortune prevailed too with the weather. The nasty storm which struck on Saturday didn’t arrive until mid-afternoon. Times photographer Wayne Martin went along and captured the colour. he Village Jeweller in Picton Street, Howick was one of 10 premises ram raided at the weekend. Store owner Chris Schweder said the culprits made quite a mess but, because very little jewellery is left in the cabinet at night, he and his team lost about $1500 of silver jewellery, “ so all very pointless”. “I feel great comfort that the huge expense and fanatical efforts I made 20 years ago when I developed the store and our rigid systems for safety and security reduced the loss,” Mr Schweder said. “With extensively reinforced steel fronts, this prevented the car going right into

the shop and causing a ridiculous amount of wreckage.” A police spokesperson confirmed they are investigating a ram raid which occurred at the Village Jeweller on Saturday morning. “This forms part of a wider investigation into 10 ram raids carried out across Counties Manukau on Saturday morning and we are now in the process of identifying which of these may be linked. “We are currently following strong lines of enquiry and can’t make any further comment at this stage.”

Trailer thefts on the rise T

water craft become an increasingly sought after commodity. “The numbers of trailers that have been stolen indicate that this is an organised endeavour and the offenders are mobile, prepared, and motivated,” he said. To combat this, police have issued some preventative counter measures: ■■ Ensure trailers are stored out of sight (where possible) ■■ Are secured to a fixed object by chain or purposebuilt device ■■ Invest in a locking/clamp mechanism that secures a wheel(s) ■■ Trailer hitch/coupling locks are also recommended ■■ Alarms can be fitted to trailers and small tracking devices can also be fitted ■■ Paint the trailer in a distinctive colour so it can be easily identified

hieves are targeting more and more trailers in the area prompting police to issue a warning. Inspector Jared Pirret, police area prevention manager for the Counties Manukau East Area said the east area is currently experiencing an “unexpected surge” in the number of trailers being stolen. Exactly 30 trailers have been stolen in the last three months in the East Area almost half of the whole districts total of 62. “These trailers are generally being taken from driveways and front lawns at residential homes right across the area,” he told the Times. “Unfortunately, these trailers have often a jet ski, boat, or other type of vehicle attached so it’s a double blow for owners.” Mr Pirret warned that with warm summer months almost here, trailers and

■■ If not using the trailer – remove a wheel(s) and secure the wheel somewhere out of sight ■■ Permanently mark the frame of the trailer to assist with identifying it later ■■ Take photographs that can be used to identify the trailer if stolen If owners of trailers are intending to leave them unattended for some time due to being away, it is worth securing it somewhere else so it can be monitored e.g. family, friends or

work place, Mr Pirret said. “We had a success recently with a trailer being recovered after the owner recognised their stolen trailer on the Trade Me site and reported it to police,” he said. “East Area staff conducted some enquiries and recovered the trailer at a Glen Innes address the same day.” “Sell sites” on the internet are a known method for thieves to move trailers on and profit from their

offending. “If you have had property stolen, it is always worthwhile to check these sites for your property as you are more likely to recognise it by photo/description,” the inspector said. “If you do suspect you have found your stolen property on a sell site, please contact the police. Do not attempt to recover it yourself.” If a trailer is stolen, Mr Pirret encourages the owner to immediately report the theft to the police and provide as much information as possible about the trailer as well as photographs which are extremely useful for identification purposes. ■■ If you have information regarding a theft of a trailer or any other crime, you can report it to the Ormiston Police station or by phone on 250-2800, or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Local Body Elections 2016 – Now we’re you’re talking

Campaign

And then there were three I

t’s hard to trust politicians. There are a load of reasons they are frequently on the list of those people we frown upon. Like real estate sales agents, used car salesmen or journalists. Politicians ask for it right? We cast shade on them all. They don’t have a chance. Before they even open their mouths we have dismissed whatever it is that’s going to spout forth. Much mistrust. It comes with the territory. And so it was with equal doses of intrigue and cynicism and very little expectation, I took a seat with well over 100 others at a mayoral forum on Monday night. The irony the meeting was being hosted in a house of God the East City Wesleyan Church (ECWC) in Botany - was not lost. A week before that, St Mark’s Catholic Church held a local body elections meeting. Is politics losing that air of grubbiness, that whiff of compost? ECWC’s Life Growth Community Trust, which has organised political candidates’ meetings for a dozen years, separated the wheat from the chaff. The four invited “heavyweights” of the 18-odd mayoral candidates became three even before the meeting began. David Hay did turn, up but not as a panellist. He appeared briefly to apologise to those who had

already cast votes for him. Hay has effectively withdrawn from the mayoral race and announced his support for Phil Goff. He left Goff, Victoria Crone and John Palino to it and that wasn’t a bad thing. The pace of the evening’s programme was managed with military efficiency (and a buzzer) which made it a sprightly rather than cumbersome stroll through the political aspirations of the trio. Facilitated by the church’s Lloyd Wong, it was slickly orchestrated. If these three mayoral aspirants were sick to death of hearing the same questions again about transport, affordable housing, infrastructure, selling off/ retaining assets, council largesse, the City Rail Link, Rural Urban Boundary, budget blowouts and the unitary plan, they sure didn’t show it. It was two hours of non-stop questions with bitesize morsels thrown back for the audience to try and digest. And unlike the theatrical and

often irritating parliamentary question time, there was never any of that yelling over one another or the interjections or stupid guffaws. Contrived? Perhaps, but the audience got to hear short, sharp answers to addressing this city’s problems (see above). Given the fact we were about

half way through the postal voting period, it was surprising how many at the meeting had still not voted. A show of hands indicated possibly 80 per cent had still to vote. They were waiting for this. At the close of the meeting another show of hands was called for, this time for how many had made a decision. Around 60 per

cent had. That’s democracy up close and personal. Is there a way to encapsulate the proceedings succinctly? Not really, although one audience member noted it was like being at an accountants’ forum. I’m uncertain whether they were used intentionally either but Goff used the expressions “walk on water” and “religiously” more than once in the chapel. Crone, quick off the draw all night, was trying to keep it real –“Government has to have the balls,” she exclaimed. And then they blurred into one, - “efficiencies”, “transparency”, “accountability”, “planning”. Disparate trains of thought. Not really. Broadly speaking, they were pretty unified in message and about delivery and about the future. Yeah there were stances we’d expect of the candidates, for example on the thorny issue of the Treaty of Waitangi and council. Or the sale of assets like the Auckland Airport shares, Watercare or the Ports of Auckland. And as we near the business end of the elections, it’s only natural to consider just who will take up the heavy yoke of office. Fortunately I conducted an uberscientific poll on the night, measuring applause (not just volume, but frequency) following each of the candidates’ myriad deliveries. Goff wins easily, followed by Crone and then, back a bit, Palino.

n initiative among the head prefects and senior leadership teams from six south-east secondary schools has resulted in raising enough money for seven Lifepod incubators. The students from Macleans, Botany, Pakuranga, Elim, Sancta Maria, and Ormiston Senior Colleges raised $14,231.31 from mufti-days and events. At Sancta Maria College they presented a cheque to Sir Ray Avery, the pharmaceutical scientist, inventor and social entrepreneur who designed the low-cost, robust incubators which are sent to developing countries.

Sir Ray told the students the global distribution of Mondiale Lifepod incubators would save millions of babies’ lives, giving them precious time to develop into healthy children through the use of innovative Kiwi technology. “The East Auckland schools are truly an inspiration raising upwards of $14,000, enough money to purchase seven Lifepod incubators,” he said. “If the East Auckland Schools are representative of the generosity and social consciousness of today’s youth, then the world is in good hands.” An organising group of head prefects and senior leader-

ship teams of the schools came together at the start of this year to develop a community initiative and support project. They decided to fund-raise for Lifepods and also mounted a ‘Love East Auckland’ campaign. More than 200 students from the schools went out into the community on September 17 performing random acts of kindness, such as giving people small items or gifts and written messages of support. The year’s initiative involved more than 10,000 students which the student leaders hope has laid the foundation for years of future service to the local community.

Dramatic requiem opens summer

TAKE THE ANNUAL

One of the most popular and dramatic requiems of all times will be performed in Auckland as summer approaches. Bach Musica NZ will perform the Verdi Requiem. It will boost its chorus to more than 100 with guest singers from the National Youth Choir, the Graduate Choir, other solo professionals and the Hamilton Civic Choir. Its orchestra, enlarged to full symphony orchestra size, will showcase eight trumpets, a bass drum, tuba and piccolo part for effect. The performance will be conducted by Rita Paczian with internationally renowned soloists Morag Atchison (soprano), Catrin Johnsson (mezzo), David Hamilton (tenor) and Joel Amosa (bass). Verdie premiered this obituary for a treasured and admired friend and poet with a modest orchestration of a

120-voices strong chorus and 100 instrumentalists which later, on tour via London’s Albert Hall, expanded to 1200 singers. True to Verdi’s love to stretch the boundaries of classical composition technique as well as political and religious standards, this ‘operaesque’ piece was regarded as rather controversial in its time. However, once the Messa da Requiem found its way to the most prestigious churches as well as playhouses, all doubt vanished and this compositional milestone

has proven to be more than just an ode to a friend, but, as George Marek calls it, “a prayer for peace by a man who had devoted his music to conflict”. ■■ Bach Musica will perform the Verdi Requiem at 5pm on October 9 at Auckland Town Hall, Upper Queen Street, Central Auckland.

Billboard vandalism a racist act By Scott Yeoman

H

owick Local Board candidate Rosa Chow has had an election billboard defaced by a racist vandal in Pakuranga. Someone wrote “Kiwi?” across one of her election signs on Pakuranga Road in spray paint on September 16, and it wasn’t the first or last billboard of hers to be vandalised during her campaign. Mrs Chow, who is standing for the Pakuranga subdivision in the upcoming local body elections, shared her story with the Human Rights Commission after she was alerted to the defaced sign by a resident on Pakuranga Road. Before that incident, Mrs Chow had one of her billboards stolen on Gills Road and the replacement sign vandalised a couple of days later. She reported it to the police. Then the day after the Pakuranga Road defacing, she noticed one of her billboards had been vandalised on Reeves Road and the next day saw that

another one had been stolen from Waller Avenue. On September 21, one of her billboards was found vandalised on Ussher Place in Pakuranga Heights. She told the Times last week that her initial reaction to the vandalism and theft was disbelief. “Why would anyone take away my sign, of all those erected at the same location? I know such things happen during election time but it never occurred that it would happen to me.” Mrs Chow said she is trying to serve her community and can’t understand why someone would try to stop her from doing that. She and her husband Thomas, who has been erecting all of the signs and inspecting them every morning to make sure they are stable, are both “really angry”. Mrs Chow said they know that these were not random acts. “It is costly, but we are not deterred by these despicable acts by people who have no respect for others.”

as a parent. She joined the Asian Council on Reducing Crime in 2008 and has played a strong role in the introduction and development of foot patrol teams, bylaw trips, education talks and safety forums. Mrs Chow had her own answer to the racist vandal’s question. “I am Kiwi, I am Chinese, I am local,” she said. A police spokeswoman told the Times that vandalism of election boards was “unfortunately occurring across Auckland right now” and was not confined to the Pakuranga/Botany areas. She said an inspector had met with Mrs Chow last week to discuss the incident. A spokeswoman for the Human Rights Commission confirmed that they had also spoken with Mrs Chow. “She has not made a formal complaint but has instead shared her story about the racist billboard attack with us as part of our “That’s Us” (www.thatsus. co.nz) anti-racism campaign.”

A small sign costs about $60 and a large one about $120, Mrs Chow said. Meanwhile, the ignorant vandal’s question – “Kiwi?” – has a very simple answer. Mrs Chow immigrated to New Zealand in 1997 and has lived in Half Moon Bay since then. She is a New Zealand citizen and has

Appeal to protect our views begins to gather momentum Donations have started to pour in for the Protect Stockade Hill Views Appeal and the fundraising effort will ramp up in the coming weeks. The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) has lodged appeals to the Environment and High Courts against Auckland Council’s decisions on the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP). The HRRA is now calling on Howick locals to help support its fundraising appeal to fight the plan changes which threaten views of the Hauraki Gulf from Stockade Hill and Ridge Road. Chair of the HRRA, Gayleen Mackereth, said lodging the appeals has already cost the association thousands of dollars. She said being a small organisation, it needs support. “The HRRA are prepared to take this on, this action for all the people of Howick now and in the future, with help from the public.” Mrs Mackereth said contributions both large and small have been steadily

Every contribution is appreciated.” She said it is imperative Howick keeps its superb views from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve for posterity. “We must fight hard to stop the present zoning allowing three storey apartment buildings forming a wall blocking our views on the seaward side of Stockade Hill.” One way the HRRA is planning on raising money is by hitting the streets with donation tins. The tins were donated by Resene following the Christchurch Earthquake and have been used for various fundraising efforts in Howick, including the Red Cross appeal to raise funds following the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines. Pat tells of older clients calling the workshop, uncertain if their warrants of fitness had expired, or that Kev Hobbs their cars wouldn’t start. “Kev would do the right thing for elderly people and just drive up there and get them going and there was no charge for that,” said Pat. Meanwhile, Kev’s Autos will continue to operate under new and skilful management. “Kev knows the customers will be in the very capable hands of Jarred Fox.” Local lad Jarred, the new director of Kev’s Autos, is well qualified and trustworthy and up to the task running what is now a well-loved business in the district. All the best on your retirement Kev and for continued success Jarred.

Kev Hobbs is a legend, not just in Howick Valley and surrounds, but Auckland as well. After 36 years, Kev of the illustrious garage Kev’s Autos is retiring leaving a legacy of loyal and satisfied customers. Such is quality of his work that three generations have chosen to rely on Kev’s Autos for their automotive needs, a loyalty that is so strong that people also come from outside of the area. Howick ValJarred Fox ley has forged its own close business environment, says the company’s bookkeeper Pat. “Loyal customers come from near and far,” she said. “There’s a happy little community within the valley...you could wander next door and borrow anything.” It’s been Kev’s rapport in business that has won loyal fans. “He’s highly thoughtful, honest and trustworthy.”

Spring weather calls for a spring clean in Howick Village Volunteers came together on Saturday 24 September to support The Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust’s (MBCT) annual sweep of cleanups in Auckland’s Southern region town centres, as part of the Town and Local Centre (TLC) Clean-up Initiative. Howick Village was the first of eight Town Centre Clean-ups to be beautified, including three additional before Christmas by MBCT - Hunters Corner, Old Papatoetoe and Otara. “TLC” was initiated this year by Len Brown and based on a similar programme which ran successfully for several years in the former Manukau City. Some 73 volunteers gathered on Saturday morning to weed, wash, paint and tidy the area in addition to planting 44 punnets of annuals, 38 easy to maintain plants and collecting 680kg of rubbish followed by a Kiwi BBQ celebration. A diverse cross-section of volunteers from the Howick and Eastern Communities came together including Somerville Rotary, Z Kennerley Limited, Point View

Girl Guides, Captain Musick Scout Group and a number of local residents turned up. Mayor Len Brown was on hand to present community volunteers with certificates of appreciation for their work. David Collings, Adele White, John Spiller and Katrina Bungard from Howick Local Board showed support for the Clean-up by pitching in. Howick Village Business Association Manager, Jenny Foster, says “a huge thanks for our Town Centre tidy, MBCT and your team put in a massive effort to make it all work – as always”. MBCT Relationship Manager, Barbara Carney, says the Trust loves working with the community, inspiring civic pride. “It is most rewarding seeing the local residents and community groups giving of their valuable time to make a difference and hopefully will encourage a change in behaviour towards others caring for our environment,” says Ms Carney.

Howick Village was the first of eight Town Centre Clean-ups to be beautified.

A fashion extravaganza On the eve of Wednesday September 21 the red carpet was rolled out. Belle Boutique & Lily Whyte Lingerie entertained guests to a fashion extravaganza at Apothecary Bar & Cafe in Howick as a fundraiser for charity Zonta Club of East Auckland. The models paraded high fashion garments and accessories from New Zealand labels Sabatini, Mild Red, Staple + Cloth, Trelise Cooper, Augustine and Nyne. The show opened with

exquisite lingerie in jewel, emerald and black from the “fantasy” collection. It was a show stopper, says Judy from Lily Whyte Lingerie. A night of fine food and wonderful ambience with Karen Legg from Avonrose Florist in Rices Mall creating a flamboyant array of floral beauty including table decorations with tiny seed lights. An exotic fan dancer and charity auction concluded the evening during which more than $3000 was raised. Oh what a night!

space and a team of “good people who just genuinely care for their customers”. “Howick’s lucky to have them. This award really does bring a lot of prestige to the salon but they deserve that. I know they’ve worked really hard to get to where they have.” To top off the August awards evening Bridgette also won a nationwide Instagram competition, winning a return trip to the UK to visit the Herb UK factory in the south of England and rub shoulders with some of the UK’s top stylists in London. “It really was a big night for me and to be honest I’m still in shock. It’s pretty wonderful when all the hard works pays off in this way.”

Howick hair salon Off the Fringe has been judged New Zealand’s best by international hair range Organic Colour Systems. At a glitzy award dinner in downtown Auckland last month Off the Fringe saw off competition from around the country, winning the night’s biggest prize – Organic Colour Systems Salon if the Year 2016 – and the prestige that goes with it. Salon owner Bridgette Young said the salon had won prizes in previous years, but never “the big one”. “I just couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know what to say and I still don’t really. It’s such a big deal for us, for my wonderful staff, and it’s so nice to say to people here that you can get the country’s best in Howick.” The award was presented by Raoul Perfitt, owner and managing director of Herb UK and the Organic Colour Systems range, who had high praise for Bridgette and her team. “As a company we focus on making the safest, cleanest and most organic hair products in the world. But at some point we have to hand them over to the stylists – it’s them putting the product in people’s hair,” Mr Perfitt said. “The better they are, the better for the customers and Bridgette and her team have shown they are the best. They really are worthy winners of this award.” Herb UK Australasia group manager Vicki King said the secrets to Off the Fringe’s success stemmed from hard work, a beautiful salon

Please use the proper spelling of programme in your newspaper as you’ve got in the article. It does not look good when you spell things incorrectly in headings – and this isn’t the first time!

article in the Times (September 22) regarding the public meeting at St Mark’s Catholic Church last Monday night. Scott nailed it when he wrote about the empty seats. In my opinion, the absent candidates didn’t think Pakuranga residents had priority over their excuses. It’s a pity the incumbent councillors didn’t think it was necessary to turn up. It would have been interesting to hear them answer a few of the questions. Secondly, thank you to St Mark’s for holding the event. We appreciated it. It was well run and the timing for the candidates’ statements was strict and fair to everyone. Thirdly, thank you to the candidates who did turn up and speak to us. Thank you for thinking our vote was worth you coming out on Monday night. We have since voted and have only voted for candidates who were at that meeting. Unfortunately we couldn’t vote for everyone, but we appreciated you being there nevertheless.

Living the Dream — Retirement

Older workforce highly regarded in New Zealand N

ew Zealand has come near the top of an international report judging how well it treats the growing number of people over-65s who are still working. A report by the financial company PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) shows nearly 40 per cent of New Zealanders are working until they are 70 and that number is rising. Its report, ranking 34 OECD countries, puts New Zealand in second place behind Iceland in how it treats older workers. It heaped praise on the country for harnessing the economic power of older workers. As well as more over-65s working, PwC said New Zealand had a great record for allowing them flexible conditions, and a relatively low gender pay gap. It was also about their skills being better appreciated, said a partner for the company, Scott Mitchell. “They are as useful, if not more, especially when they can be in a flexible working environment,” he said. “Just because you become an aged worker, the mere fact you’ve got someone who’s been there and done that and has maturity – they can be fantastic coaches.” There are several reasons why older people keep working, said a co-director of the Retirement Policy

praise: Forty per cent of Kiwis are working until they are 70. and Research Centre at Auckland University, Susan St John. “Among them of course is the problem of outliving savings and needing to provide extra because there’s a greater awareness that New Zealand’s Super scheme, while generous, isn’t enough for many people,” she said.

People should be judged on what they are able to do, rather than a ticking clock, said former All Blacks doctor and current chief medical officer for Sovereign, John Mayhew. “There’s no evidence that work is bad for us, it may be better in fact. As long as someone is physically and mentally able to do the job they want to do and they enjoy it then carry on,” he said. “For most of us there’s no magical cut-off at 65. “I think we should push the retirement age up.” PwC’s report also calls for the government to look at the retirement age, but Ms St John said just because more older people are working, it did not mean it should go up. “That is a real can of worms because many people are not capable of staying in the workforce and raising the age puts them on a work benefit, for example,” she said. Ms St John said it was worth noting statistics do not take into account older people who spend much of their time in unpaid caregiving roles – that could mean simply looking after grandchildren. The government’s statistics show of all over-65s, one in five is working. That is expected to rise to one in three in 20 years’ time.

A Times Newspapers Supplement, September 2016 — 13

When I’m 64 … I’ll still be working The raising of the age of eligibility for New Zealand Superannuation from 60 to 65 during the 1990s has had a marked effect on the age we now retire. The Beatles song, When I’m 64, penned by Paul McCartney about getting old, seems oddly premature nearly 50 years after its release. Most 64-year-olds would scoff at the suggestion they were on the brink of dotage and this is more than borne out by the numbers of us who are still in work long after collecting our Gold Card. According to the last Census, nearly 130,000 seniors aged 65 and over are in full or part-time employment. Statistics show they were most likely to be managers or professionals. Within the managers group, the most common types were ‘farmers and farm managers’ followed by ‘chief executives, general managers, and legislators’. Within the professionals group, education professionals were the most common with office workers and labourers making up the rest. As well as participation in paid work, older people make positive contributions to their communities through volunteer work or helping their families with childcare, in fact most seniors are involved in some unpaid activities.

If someone you love needs care, we can help. In every little way.

When you’re older or unwell, we know the little things can make all the difference. That’s why here at HBH, we put caring first, every day and in every way. PUTTING PEOPLE ON THE ROAD

Age is just a number - and it’s going up

T

he only way is up for the longevity of New Zealand residents aged 65 years and over. Kiwis born today can expect to live on average over eight years longer now than those born in 1980. All across the world, companies, governments and communities are scrambling to harness the energy and meet the needs of an aging population . The number of people over age 60 is already close to 1 billion and is expected to double by mid-century to nearly a quarter of the planet’s population, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. And as they age, they’re likely to spend more to maintain their active lifestyles than any previous generation in history. If you are nearing retirement or

are already there, you will need to think how to spend the extra years you can now expect to live—30 years more than in 1900—and how to pay for them. Your children and grandchildren should also start planning for lives that may be remarkably different from those of their parents. Careers that extend over five or six decades may require multiple phases of education and training, and paying for health care into old age will necessitate new financial solutions. History has never before experienced such a demographic shift and which is guaranteed to transform how we, our children and our grandchildren live. At the last census New Zealand had 607,032 residents aged 65 years and over, an increase of 22.5 per

lives. All the more reason to start making preparations earlier than you think to enjoy those longerthan-ever golden years. To help you make the most of your retirement, Age Concern Manukau has developed the Triple A programme to provide participants with resources and information to create an action plan for positive ageing. Through a series of workshops held at the charity’s offices at Cambria Park Homestead, Papatoetoe, the programme aims

to empower people approaching retirement by providing them with a comprehensive, holistic plan for all aspects of life after work. A workbook guides you through a series of modules designed to help you think about retirement. Topics covered include how you want to spend your time, financial, family, legal matters, what, where and who you want to live by, personal risk management plans and tools to help make your own individualised plan. Without an action plan for the next stage of their lives, Age Concern believes people approaching retirement are left with fewer choices if their circumstances

cent since 2006. Fast forward 25 years and that number is projected to double when our senior population will reach one and a quarter million. Previous generations were expected to age politely and cope with the aches and pains that defined retirement. But today people are not just committed to living longer but to living better. Longevity has not only increased life spans but has also granted many more years of good health. This is expected to create a greater demand for home health workers and assisted-living facilities to enable people to live independently for many years. Correspondingly, the number of people in nursing homes is expected to decline.

WOFs not just for cars B

y and large, older drivers are some of the best drivers and take good care of their vehicles. This is reflected in lower car insurance premiums for over 55s. However, while our cars pass the warrant of fitness with flying colours the same cannot always be said of the drivers who may be affected by changes in vision, reaction time and flexibility. This can affect safe vehicle handling and pose a risk to all road users. A safe road system has skilled, competent, alert and sober drivers travelling at safe speeds in safe vehicles on safe roads that are predictable and forgiving of mistakes. The NZ Transport Agency has developed Staying Safe – a refresher workshop for senior road users. Coupled with the advancements in car safety technology there’s no reason why you shouldn’t remain behind the wheel for any years to come. It’s important to choose the safest car you can afford that suits your needs. The better the fit between you and your car, the more comfortable, in control and safe you’ll be. The choice of a car with in-built safety and technology features suited to the physical capabilities of the driver, e.g. rear-view cameras to assist with reversing, will improve safety. The NZTA recommends you choose a vehicle with high

Stretch your mind and body to stay young You don’t have to run marathons to maintain your fitness as you age but regular exercise is a must if you want to live life to the full. Fortunately our area has a plethora of lovely parks to walk (or jog) in, swimming baths, tennis and bowling clubs aplenty and no end of exercise classes to suit all ages and fitness levels. Health and longevity are primary goals of both tai chi and yoga and several classes run in our neighbourhood. At the Te Tuhi centre in Pakuranga, FlyingMoon Yoga practices Yoga Asana, a light exercise class to stretch, relax and improve your immune system, to achieve good health, weight loss and improve confidence, flexibility and peace of mind. This class is suitable for beginners through to the experienced. Saturdays, 10.30 - 11.45am, contact Cindy on (09)577 5381 or 021 268 4986. The smooth, gentle movements of Tai Chi is said to aid relaxation and help to keep the mind calm and focused. A community class is held at Te Tuhi on Fridays between 10am-11.15am. Anyone can join, classes cost just $6 per person and they teach people how to achieve better balance, stability and co-ordination through a series of exercises. Studies have shown that these exercises may improve arthritis. Contact Madeleine Lynch on 021 378 882. Website: www.taichichen.org. Wanting to add more years to life and more life to your years? Exciting new research suggests that chiropractic may help you do just that! As you age the demands of life’s journey have a degenerative effect on your body, and in particular your nervous system. In some cases, your independence might be lost. But here is some exciting news! Studies show that older people who receive regular chiropractic care have improved general health and well-being, and are more active and have greater mobility. A recently published trial, by award winning New Zealand researcher Dr Kelly Holt PhD, has shown that 12 weeks of chiropractic care in a group of older people improved their sensory and motor function, which is an important factor in reducing the risk of falls. Self-reported quality of life was also significantly improved.[1]. “Statistics show that falls account for more than 80% of injury related hospital admissions in people older than 65 years, and they are the leading cause of injury related death in older adults” says Dr Tanja, one of the chiropractors at Creating Wellness (Pakuranga). Another recently published New Zealand study, presented at the World Federation of Chiropractic Congress in Athens, showed that

older people receiving chiropractic care reported improved quality of life. This study also showed that people felt significantly better both mentally and physically.[2] This can mean more time for and enjoyment doing the things that you love: gardening, golfing, walking, and playing with the grandchildren. Dr Janette says, “the people in this study were aged between 69 – 80 years of age, which just goes to show that it is never too late to make the choice to improve your health, function and wellbeing” Of interest in both these studies was the time-frame for improvement. There were fewer changes noticed in the first 4 weeks of care, however as chiropractic care progressed the improvements seemed to just keep getting better. This just goes to show what we all know in life; for true results, great outcomes take time and commitment The team at Creating Wellness are actively involved in research and help train future chiropractors at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic. They know first hand just how beneficial

chiropractic care can be in improving the function and quality of life in the people they see. They have been taking care of the East Auckland community for over 10 years and have seen the same improvements in people over and over again. Our approach is primarily lighter force adjusting suitable for all body types. Chiropractic is an important part of living life to the fullest potential for as long as possible. Don’t wait until it’s too late to make sure you are functioning at your best! Book your appointment today!

leading Pakuranga practice is giving people more reasons to smile. At PDP Denture Studio in Edgewater Drive, Pakuranga, patients may arrive feeling down but leave with a big smile on their faces. Founder and award-winning clinical dental technician, Leah Taylor, says: “A smile is the first thing people see. It affects how we speak, eat and communicate.” Leah, the Vice President of the New Zealand Institute of Dental Technologists (NZIDT), says: “It’s quite rewarding being able to change people’s lives.Especially for those who haven’t been feeling their best for a long time.” Established for nearly 20 years, PDP Denture Studio has helped patients from all over the world including the Australia, UK, US and the Pacific Islands. They specialise in comprehensive denture solutions from full to partial or implant retained dentures, as well as mouth guards and snore guards. Using the very best European materials and cutting edge technology, PDP Denture Studio’s work is satisfaction guaranteed. Most importantly, the PDP Denture team assists with long term care of dentures. “We don’t just make and

fit dentures. We also help existing denture wearers with services such as relines, repairs and cleaning,” says Leah. As people age or experience weight loss, the jaw shrinks (ridge resorption) and dentures may become ill-fitting, at which point they may need to be relined. “We can reline dentures within a day. We also offer a while-you-wait denture cleaning service that takes just half an hour,” says Leah. “We perform a full oral check and while the denture is being cleaned. We also give our denture cleaning clients a goodie bag with everything they need to look after their plates.” The state-of-the-art Renfert Sympro machine thoroughly removes any plaque, debris or staining that has accumulated. Leah heads a team of professionals all trained at the University of Otago including head of dental laboratory Julie Lim and dental technician Natalie Hyland. As well as being a guest lecturer at Otago University, Leah will also be heading to Fiji in October to be key note speaker in Dental Technology at the Fiji Oral Health Workers Conference as part of the Smiles for the Pacific Charity.

Dawning of a new era I

n many ways Dawn Dowling is typical of a modern woman of retirement age. She still works, enjoys great health and looks fantastic - and has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon. Yet it’s her vitality and youthful looks that cause most incredulation when people learn where she lives. Just before Christmas last year Dawn moved to the Bruce Mclaren Retirement Village in Howick. Her spacious apartment is beautifully appointed, furnished with taste and decorated with interior designer detail. She’s created a home of distinction that could happily feature in a glossy magazine and one which many of us would give their eye teeth to move to. So why does her address cause such surprise? “There appears to be this myth that village life is tantamount to moving to an old peoples’ home, but I live no differently here than you do in your home,” said Dawn. Which isn’t strictly true: how many of us enjoy luxury resort-style facilities which include a bowling green, indoor heated swimming pool and spa, gym, library and movie theatre as Dawn does. Not to mention a busy social calendar full of interesting activities and events, from line dancing and guest speakers to winery visits, bowls coaching, zumba and pilates. There’s also regular social outings, shopping trips, monthly morning tea and a weekly happy hour where residents enjoy complimentary drinks in a spacious lounge. “You can become involved in as many of the activities as you want but its all about life balance and keeping your outside interests along with your family and friends. “Security and having the gardens and home maintenance cared for by friendly staff is a huge benefit.” Dawn says many people delay making the move to a retirement complex for a raft of reasons including financial concerns and a misguided perception that they were for ‘old folks’. “People leave it far too late to move, making the transition difficult to settle into their new home. Some never settle, spending years saying ‘will l, won’t I’ which causes huge stress in itself. “Leaving it so late also means that their family has to make the decisions, usually due to ill health. Or worse deciding yes then nothing suitable is available. You must keep control of your life. “Plan for your retirement and

where you want to live in the next 10 years, don’t wait till you have no alternative. “There are no negatives to retirement village living.” Dawn has been a successful real estate agent for the past 15 years after running her own recruitment agency. “I have been selling people into retirment complexes for years and always knew I would move into one myself as I know the huge advantages of living in one. “A lot of people have said to me ‘how come you live there?’, which I take as a compliment. “Age is just a number or mindset, it’s all about attitude and living the dream one has worked and planned for. “I’m busy with lots of things and love spending quality time with my friends and family. Retirement is on hold – working keeps me young.”

Buying a unit at a retirement village: What do you need to know?

N

ew Zealand, like most of the developed world, is currently experiencing the effects of an ageing population. This means a greater demand for residential property that caters to the lifestyle requirements and social demands older people need. In response, many New Zealanders are purchasing units in retirement villages to ensure their needs are met. New Zealand a retirement dream Figures released by Statistics New Zealand show that the number of people aged 65 and over has doubled since 1980. It is also forecast that New Zealand’s population of 65 and over will double once again by 2036. This is expected to be heavily influenced by the volume of baby boomers that move into this 65 and over age group between now and 2036. However, unlike what the media says, it is not all bad. In fact retiring in New Zealand is considered by many to be better than anywhere else in the world. For instance, the 2016 HSBC Expat Explorer ranked New Zealand joint first for expat experience, citing its healthcare and quality of life the best the globe has to offer. New Zealand’s exceptional social agencies and the sheer beauty of its natural features make it the ideal place to retire. Yet, as people age, they need housing that caters to their unique needs. To accomplish this, older New Zealanders need to purchase property

that is secure, easily maintained and close to health and transport services. One of the best ways to achieve this is by acquiring a unit at a retirement village or similar facility. Yet, there are a number of specific legal considerations that come with this course of action. Legislative protections for buyers While buying a unit in a retirement village can be a daunting task, the government did introduce a legislative safety net in 2003. The Retirement Villages Act 2003 (the Act) and its concomitant regulations help protect residents and prospective residents from financial and emotional loss. The legislation outlines a number of provisions in relation to the obligations of both residents and operators. One of the most important provisions of the Act is the Occupation Right Agreements (ORA) between operators and residents. An ORA is a legal document that gives an individual (or couple) the right to occupy a residential unit situated within a retirement village for the remainder of their life, or until they choose to leave. It specifically sets out the terms and conditions that are required by the Act and the Retirement Villages (General) Regulations 2006, which sets out a code of ethics for operators. The Code of Practice 2008 sets out the minimum rights and obligations of retirement village operators and their residents. It provides a number

EMPTY NESTERS Do you have enough to be financially secure in your golden years? Are you on track to kill your mortgage before you retire? Will you then have time to save enough for retirement?

RETIREMENT: It’s a time to relax, not to be caught up in legal issues. of minimum requirements that all operators must comply with. The Code covers 10 specific areas which include, but are not limited to: • Staffing arrangements at the retirement villages • Safety and security of residents and units • Complaints process • Maintenance arrangements • Communication pathways with residents These conditions are meant to be reflected in the ORA that individuals sign before they move into their unit. Retirement is a time to relax, not to be caught up in legal issues. Is legal advice important when signing an ORA? One of the legal conditions of entering into an ORA is the requirement to have independent legal advice. Intending residents must seek legal advice completely

independent of their retirement village operator. The intending resident’s lawyer will explain the general conditions of the agreement and its legal implications. To do this, you need to ensure you have the right advice from a lawyer experienced with ORAs. Alongside this, a lawyer will be needed to witness the person’s signature as well as certify that the intended resident received an explanation of the ORA in terms they have understood. If the certification is not properly attained, the resident’s agreement could be void and may lead to issues further down the track. If you are looking at purchasing a unit within a retirement village, it is imperative you seek quality advice from a lawyer experienced with ORAs. Contact Wynyard Wood today to ensure that you understand your rights and obligations under an ORA.

Free support for hearing loss journey A

free national hearing loss service, with local clinics all around Auckland, is helping people manage the impact of hearing loss on their daily lives, ease frustration and even isolation. Hearing Therapy is a Ministry of Health-funded service where people can get one-on-one support from a hearing therapist, available all around New Zealand, including clinics in Highland Park, Tamaki Campus and Hunter’s Corner in Papatoetoe. Local hearing therapist, Debbie Brown, says the people she works with are often at the start of their hearing loss journey - feeling like they might need some help, which could possibly include hearing aids, but not sure where to start. “We can help right from the start with an independent and free hearing evaluation, including finding out how you are finding daily communication, like hearing in groups or café settings, or on the phone,” says Debbie. “We don’t sell or fit hearing aids but we can give you information about all the different types, organise a referral to an audiologist or GP

ravel is booming right now and this is particularly true for people in their ‘golden years’. They’ve long said goodbye to the nine-to-five grind, the mortgage has been paid off and the kids have finally left the nest. If there’s one thing retirement guarantees, it’s time. Lots of it. And many are choosing to spend it on taking more holidays, mostly overseas. According to Sue Matson, Flight Centre NZ general manager retail, while Australia and the South Pacific are still top destinations, today’s retirees are travelling much more further afield. “A cruise in Antarctica is no longer out of the question; neither is a holiday in South America, a food and wine tour through Europe, or a multigenerational trip to the United States. “For seniors, the bucket list is rated as even more of an accomplishment. For the adventurous, there are mountain climbs and thrillseeking activities, but for many it’s simply the chance to experience a different culture, or take in some of the world’s most famous tourist sites.” Multi-generational holidays have become an increasingly popular way for families to spend quality time together with generous grandparents often footing the bill. Kids, parents and

grandparents are packing their bags and heading off on a family getaway that suits all generations. Cruising is one of the most popular forms of travel for more mature customers, offering great value for money and an easy ‘unpack once’ holiday. “Seniors have long understood how easy and economical it is to travel by cruise ship. “The chance to visit several exotic destinations on one holiday has great appeal, while an all-inclusive price means cruisers can save hundreds on the total cost of a holiday,” said Sue. House of Travel Howick handles a large number of bookings for locals over 55. It has noticed some destination hot spots among retirees with a European river cruise top of many bucket lists. Cruising of all kinds is a perennial favourite from round the world voyages to an island hopping cruise round the Greek islands and the Med, the Caribbean or closer to home round the Pacific islands and Australia. For those who want to keep their feet on the ground, the prefect greens of Maui’s golf courses makes Hawaii a popular choice with direct return flights to Honolulu a bonus. Touring the Canadian Rockies and cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage are the choice of

seniors seeking a combination of magnificent scenery and extraordinary experiences. Sue Matson says all-inclusive packages are a popular option for retirees. “It means you don’t need to worry about a thing once you check in with all your meals, drinks and activities pre-paid, pre-booked and ready to go. “From relaxing beach retreats, to European adventures, all-inclusive packages take the stress out of planning a holiday.” Small group tours geared towards specific age groups from 45 to 75 allow travellers to enjoy a flexible itinerary tailored to the preferences of those in the group. “People enjoy being able to go beyond the typical tourist attractions and being able to interact with the local people. You linger longer in the areas you enjoy, share home-cooked meals with families and visit remote areas that are often closed off to large tour groups.” ‘Voluntouring’ is perfectly suited to seniors looking for adventure and an emotional connection to their travel experience. No surprise it is growing in popularity as a great way to stay active and to create a meaningful travel experience. Motivated by a desire to give back to the community, seniors can choose from many different types of volunteer programmes across the world.

Eighty thousand New Zealanders are involved in a new Otago University study to reduce over-medication harm. Side effects from medications cause around 15 per cent of hospitalisations among the elderly and overseas studies suggest one in five prescriptions may be inappropriate. “It’s very hard when each drug has 10 side effects and somebody’s on 20 medications to work out whether they’re possible side effects from which drug,” said Dr Hamish Jamieson, Otago University researcher and geriatrician. The study is comparing patient outcomes on a nationwide health database with results from a newly-developed electronic

measure called the Drug Burden Index, or DBI, to see if the DBI can accurately predict which elderly are most at risk of drug harm. Early overseas trials indicate a high DBI is a good predictor of falls, fractures, loss of independence and even death. Researchers say if the Drug Burden Index does predict adverse side effects from drugs, it could allow doctors to electronically calculate the risk before medicines are prescribed to the elderly, preventing harm and saving lives. A high DBI calculation score would throw up a red flag on the doctor’s computer. “So the patients and clinicians can see that and use that to together decide if continuing to use these medications is appropriate,” Dr Jamieson said. If not, the patient can be taken off that drug or prescribed another. A pilot project with GPs and pharmacists might be underway by the end of this year.

gleefully joining in with our Beatles Medley. Friday was a highlight for us all. At 2pm we practiced in a local church with three other choirs – from America, Canada and Australia - to prepare for Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus to be sung on the grand stage that night. At 4pm we joined the Parade of Nations marching through the village of Llangollen with thousands of people lining the streets five deep in places! They cheered as we walked by singing Pokarekare Ana, the National Anthem and Te Karakihi – complete with actions. This was very exciting and we were filmed on Welsh TV with Bruce Murray being interviewed as well. A total of 22 countries participated in the Eisteddfod and the colourful costumes, the amazing singing we heard over the course of the week, especially at the evening concerts, was unforgettable! As the grand finale to Friday evening’s concert, we had the joy of singing the Hallelujah Chorus on the main Eisteddfod stage in front of 4000 people. An amazing experience! Saturday morning and our final pop up in the Daily Mail

Theatre. Again we had an appreciative audience who rocked out with us as we performed our Jersey Boys medley. The fundraising we did before we left New Zealand enabled the group to visit many wonderful sights in Wales in addition to the locations where we performed. The City of Auckland Singers were treated with respect and wonderful hospitality while in Wales and we were proud to wear our black New Zealand Polo shirts which were kindly donated by the Thames Music Group after we performed in Thames in May. Singing is an art form which needs no translation, and being among people from other countries who love to sing as much as we do was an incredibly life-changing experience. For our final concert this year we plan to go out with a bang on November 5! You might even hear the Sky Fall! We have a couple of crackers in our choir and a few sparklers too! Come along and guess which ones they are! There will be further details published closer to the concert. Lyn Stevens

It is really special being part of a choir! Even more so when you get to travel to Wales and represent New Zealand as a performing choir at the 70th Llangollen Eisteddfod. We made so many memories which will last a lifetime. The City of Auckland Singers arrived in Wales on Sunday July 3 and by Monday morning we were on a bus heading to Chirk Castle to perform a 30 minute pop-up concert in a lovely courtyard where we had an appreciative audience. They particularly enjoyed You’ll never Walk Alone and Skyfall. Tuesday and off to Liverpool! Imagine singing at the Beatles Experience Museum – All you need is love and we could certainly feel that from the audience! It seemed like only Yesterday that we were home in New Zealand. On Wednesday we headed to the ruins of Conwy Castle and climbed up to a splendid setting for our concert. It was so memorable singing with people around us and lining the parapets adding to the atmosphere. Thursdays pop-up concert was at Powis Castle in the beautiful Orangerie gardens, with people being drawn by our singing and joining others already listening. Lovely surroundings and acoustics drew the best from our choir who lifted their voices joyfully! All the Things you are and Riversong were popular. On Friday our concert in the Daily Mail Theatre was a great success with the audience

roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church has repeated his call for the Reserve Bank to exempt first home buyers from the Loan-to-value restrictions following news that more than one million Kiwis are now locked out of home ownership which he describes as a crisis. New figures from Statistics New Zealand show that 78 per cent of those currently renting – or 458,000 households - have a net worth of $120,000 or less which means they cannot afford the 20 per cent deposit on the average New Zealand home required under the Reserve Bank rules. The main barrier to first home ownership, he says, isn’t housing affordability or the cost of servicing a mortgage. “It’s the LVR restrictions. That means that a generation of Kiwis can say goodbye to a first home because of an artificial barrier, created by the Reserve Bank, to solve a problem which almost certainly doesn’t exist.” He says the LVR restrictions on first home buyers were originally introduced as a precaution against the possibility of a housing market crash. But almost two years on prices have instead kept increasing.

“This was entirely predictable,” he says, “and we said so when the LVR rules first came in. Talk of an imminent crash was always nonsense. “Even figures out of Treasury show that the New Zealand market hasn’t had a significant fall in house prices in over 45 years and is unlikely to suddenly have one now.” Mr Church says the LVR restrictions on first home buyers have been a devastating failure and have, instead, ended up creating a ‘perfect storm’ in which property investors have been able to snap up homes that might traditionally have been bought by

Kiwi families. “The situation is now beyond ridiculous and it’s time for this ill-conceived experiment to end.” Mr Church wants first home buyers exempted from the deposit rules and the power returned to the trading banks to decide whether or not someone constitutes a good credit risk and what deposit, if any, should be required. “That’s the situation that prevailed prior to the imposition of the LVR rules and it worked well for the country for several decades and through several property downturns – so the sky isn’t going to collapse if we do it again.”

A classic 70s transformation storage. “It makes working in the kitchen much easier as I don’t have to constantly bend down.”

The first thing to do was pull down the walls. This was arranged by her son in law who had previously used Jag for his own kitchen renovation.

There is a spice rack that sits comfortably in one of the drawers.

The transformation is breathtaking. A traditional 70s kitchen has been converted by Jag Kitchens into a modern, open plan space with a panoramic view of Rangitoto Island in the seaside suburb of St Heliers.

Johanna Peters, left, with Jag Kitchens consultant Caroline Charman. Times photos Wayne Martin

The benchtop is an engineered stone - Silestone “Blanco matrix” a lovely neutral light colour makes the kitchen appear more spacious.

Johanna Peters moved backed into the spacious two-bedroom apartment which had previously been rented out and is thrilled with the look and feel of the beautiful new kitchen that has been designed by Caroline Charman of Jag Kitchens. The project required a total renovation, completely removing everything from floor to ceiling. It was stripped back to a bare shell and re done from scratch. The end result is practical and functional - a classic design that will never date. A designer with Jag Kitchens for the last 12 years, Caroline has literally redesigned hundreds of kitchens – it is her ability to see how a space can be transformed if walls are removed and that gives her clients the confidence to take that next step. Using the 3D design software she was able to explain to Johanna how the kitchen would

look with the wall removed. Johanna also got to see the dynamics of extra bench space, a pullout pantry and bigger drawers. The style makeover features a raised timber countertop in Yaka that fits beautifully with Joanna’s furniture. It is this that ties the kitchen to the remainder of the room. The kitchen cabinetry is a traditional style of thermoformed door in Dezignatek. One of Johanna’s favourite

features is the eye-catching splashback done with mosaic glass tiles. The metallic and iridescent finish of the mosaic tiles adds a luxurious as well as an elegant touch to the kitchen. “Opening up the kitchen

completely has totally transformed the space,” says Caroline who has a keen eye for detail and structural lines. Most of the kitchens is drawers which Joanna loves. They give her easy access and maximises

We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

“Thank you so much for your wonderful and helpful teaching” - Debra “I just recently got offered a place in Auckland University for all my selected courses. I could not have done it without you” - Miraj “I am sincerely grateful for all the help you have provided me whilst teaching me Mathematics. In such a short span of time I feel so much more confident” - Aakriti “I think he has got a lot out of the sessions with you, it makes a huge difference getting help from someone who actually knows how to teach” - Cody’s Mother

We are only 6 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

Lawn Bowls Two Howick lawn bowlers have the started the new season by winning the Auckland 2-4-2 mixed pairs competition at the weekend. Bryan Chapman from the Howick Bowling Club paired up with current Auckland representative Linda Ralph for the Auckland Centre event. Ralph, who lives in Howick, used to play for the Pakuranga Bowling Club but is currently playing for Carlton Cornwall. By winning the Auckland Centre event, Ralph and Chapman have qualified for the New Zealand finals in Dunedin in March next year. They will be representing Auckland Centre at the event. This was Ralph’s fifth Auckland title and she was awarded the much coveted “Gold Star”.

School Rugby Three Saint Kentigern College rugby players have been named in the 2016 New Zealand Schools and Barbarian Schools teams. No horse? Not a problem T

otara Park Pony Club is inviting children who don’t have their own pony to a special school holidays course. The Pony Lovers 101 programme is an introduction to pony ownership and pony management. Renee Leslie, programme co-ordinator says the course is a “fabulous opportunity for children without their own pony to have fun learning hands-on”. Similar courses have been run by the pony club in previous years. Last year’s course was full with more than 30 children attending. The club was originally Howick Pony Club in Bells Road, now Lloyd Elsmore Park. As development took over, the club moved to Botany before it became built up. The club moved again to

Somerville Road on the late Archie Somerville’s farm and merged with Manurewa Pony Club about 15 years ago to become Totara Park Pony Club. The holiday programme will run for four days with children 11-14 years participating on October 3-4 and children 10 years and under participating on October 5-6. “This is the perfect programme to encourage young children to find out if they really are committed and keen to take on the responsibility of pony ownership,” Ms Leslie says. ■■ The Totara Park Pony Club introduction to pony ownership and pony management school holiday course runs at 9.30am-3.30pm on October 3-6 at Totara Park Pony Club, 251 Redoubt Road, Manukau. It costs $175. Phone Renee Leslie on 020-4052-3227.

Women’s sevens anyone? Pakuranga United Rugby Club are trying to get a women’s sevens team up and running this summer. Premier coach and director of rugby Pita Alatini has secured a couple of coaches to take the team and he will be on hand to overlook and help

when required. He said training started on Tuesday and another training session will be held tonight at Bell Park at 6pm. “If we get good numbers then they will play in our club tournament at the end of October.”

Alatini, a former All Black, said he has wanted to start a women’s sevens team at the club for a while now. He said if there are enough keen players for the club tournament in October, they would look to take part in the Auckland club competition the following week and

then see from there what other competitions are available. “It’s a very exciting project but we will just see our numbers...and then go from there. “If all goes well we will look to continue on to a 15s team or the newly proposed 10-a-side team for a development side.”

Big boys fall harder H

eavyweight boxer Joseph Parker will be hoping there is truth in the adage that “the bigger they are, the harder they fall’ when he fights 2.01m giant Alexander Dimitrenko at the Manukau Vodafone Events Centre on Saturday night. It’s a risky bout against a dangerous 34-year-old Ukrainian who has superior height and reach and has lost just two of 40 professional fights, 24 by knockout. But at 24 and with a 20-0 win record, 1.93m Parker is nobody’s patsy and proved that when deservedly beating the talented Carlos Takam in his last fight despite Dimitrenko’s claim that it was a home town decision. That assertion has angered Parker who regards it as disrespectful and is eager to let his fists do the talking when he fronts the Ukrainian on Saturday night. However manager Kevin Barry will be counselling him against being too eager and for him to keep his cool after his charge did have stamina issues against Takam. Like Parker, Dimitrenko is a good mover and has a busy straight left. But he doesn’t have the same speed or lethal left hook-right cross combination

Agnew’s Angle Parker has. While Dimitrenko’s record is impressive, his second and last loss was to Kubrat Pulev when he was sat on his pants in May 2012, after tiring badly in the latter rounds.Although that final punch didn’t look particularly lethal, it did keep him out of action for 26 months. Since then Dimitrenko’s confidence has been restored with four wins on the trot, three by TKO, and a unanimous points decision. Meanwhile with Tyson Fury claiming mental depression for failing to defend his world crowns against former champ Wladimir Klitschko on October 29, promoters are keen to have a unification fight between Klitschko and IBF titleholder Anthony Joshua as soon as possible. That would be cruel justice for the controversial 28-yearold Tyson who boxed smart to relieve Klitschko of his titles and looked destined to earn many millions defending his titles. It

could also put mandatory challenger Parker’s chances of getting a crack at Joshua’s IBF crown on the backburner. However that is a distraction he doesn’t need when facing Dimitrenko on Saturday night in what should be an intriguing battle. The odds are the Kiwi will get his challenge but it could take longer than he had hoped. Meanwhile Cronulla will be hoping a Sydney crowd will roar them to victory in their NRL final on Saturday against a Melbourne Storm outfit that pipped Canberra 14-12 in last weekend’s semi-final. Moving the ball smartly, the Sharks’ strong running and backing up was impressive in their James Maloney-inspired 32-20 win against the North Queensland Cowboys who looked jaded following their nail-biting semifinal win against Brisbane. The difference in the second clash was once again the class of Storm captain Cameron Smith and clever halfback Cooper Cronk who stayed cool under pressure. Led by Paul Gallen and Andrew Fifita, there is plenty of fire in that Cronulla pack and the grit of standoff half Maloney and bril-

liance of fullback Ben Barba to test the Storm’s mettle. But with Kiwis Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor offering strong support for Smith up front, the Storm don’t buckle easily and

have a wonderful record in playoffs under the astute guidance of passionate coach Craig Bellamy. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
