Wondering when that next assignment is due? The answer is now literally in the palm of your hand. A trio of Macleans College students have come up with an app designed to help students manage their classes and assignments. Developed as part of the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme by Year 13 students Kerman Kohli (18) and his teammates Andreas Knapp (18) and Keerthana Ananth (17), the Ed.life app makes it impossible for students to lose track of assignment deadlines. As Kerman elaborates, the app includes a “calendar with all your homework tasks and your timetable”. The app can also give students alerts about their next class and which room it is in. The app even allows students to their teachers’ details. The app was launched in February of this year, and is available for both Android and iOS devices. “We have about 4000-5000 monthly active users all around the world. I think about 30 per cent are in Japan,” Kerman says.

isher & Paykel Appliances – the iconic fridge maker – is just weeks away from letting go the last of its staff and shutting the gates on the East Tamaki factory for the final time. In April the company briefed staff on plans for the closure of the factory which manufactures a range of small refrigeration products. The briefing followed

a period of consultation with unions representing factory staff, with further feedback on the closure process sought over the following weeks. The factory in April was operating four days a week and employed 186 staff. Spokesperson Matt Orr told the Times the phased closure of the factory has progressed as planned in continued consultation with staff and their union representa-

tives. The first phase was completed in July, with 42 staff being made redundant with 11 staff redeployed internally. The second phase is due in November, with factory decommissioning thereafter. “While this first phase has been another difficult milestone in the process for all involved, we’ve been very pleased with the supportive response from other local

employers and their interest in recruiting affected staff,” Mr Orr said. “Fisher & Paykel has so far been approached by approximately 30 firms to investigate job opportunities with staff, and we are aware of a number of people moving into new roles. “In particular, a recent job fair hosted by the company was well attended, yielding several new job ➤ Turn to Page 3 opportunities.

iscal responsibility and tackling Auckland Council’s management policies are among promises being made by mayoral candidates for the upcoming SuperCity election. Restricting rates money spending to core services was on the minds of people attending a meeting organised by the Grey Power Howick/Pakuranga Association. Victoria Crone said she would control spending on all fronts and cap rates to an average two per cent increase. “Debt is getting out of control and we need to pay it back faster. I will be targeting additional surpluses to do that,” she said. Auckland Council, she said, was “trying to pull the wool over our eyes” about staff numbers. Total staff costs were up 50 per cent in five years. “I don’t want to fund growth through your pockets but instead look at public/private partnerships. Phil Goff said there was a need to focus on core services but rates would not pay for all of them. “We have a deficit of $17$20 billion in infrastructure and we are not going to try to find that out of rates. We must say to central Government that we are not going

to pay for the city’s growth out of our rates. The Government gets the benefit and we get the costs. We need a strong voice in Wellington because I don’t believe we are getting our fair share.” Mr Goff questioned the tiers of management at the council and said he would be demanding that the chief executive deploy people efficiently and cut duplication and waste. John Palino said ratepayers should not be paying for Auckland’s growth, only core services and depreciation of those services. “They won’t open the books about staff numbers,” Mr Palino said. “But I have found the payroll is 28 per cent [of costs] when an average is 22 per cent. It’s not fair to just raise the rates. If I find the money we will need to give it back [to ratepayers].” Transport would be the number one priority, Mark Thomas said. The council has too many analysts and planners, he said, promising to move staff members into roles supporting roads, rail, busways and building houses. “We have to come back to core issues. We wrestle with the Len Brown 10-year budget and I will be looking for a better deal.” David Hay said he did not believe in taking money

SuperCity legislation which requires an Independent Maori Statutory Board but were prepared to limit the unelected members’ powers. Penny Bright: “I don’t support unelected people having a vote. It’s not democratic.” Victoria Crone: “The board has been legislated for. But I do not believe they have to have representation on any of the committees.”

from fuel taxes and spending it only on transport. “It’s inflexible and an unstrategic and uneconomic way to use revenue. We must take and apply the money where it is needed most.” He also referred to the former Manukau City Council “highly efficient flat management system” compared with “the Auckland Council model of long narrow deep tiers of management”. “The staff numbers are not the problem, the structure is,” he said. How much rates money being spent on independent contractors was not forthcoming, Penny Bright said. “I’m going to have a small team of forensic auditors go through the books and find out where every dollar is

spent or invested. “The creation of the SuperCity was for the one per cent of property developers, speculators, land bankers and money launderers. The law is not being followed. It’s being ignored.” She was critical of the four layers of pinstriped council staff and contractors that had to be navigated before finding labourers doing the real jobs. “I call it ‘contracteacracy’, an infestation of private sector people acting as public servants. They’re used to looking after their shareholders, not you ratepayers. When I am the mayor I will clean it up and ensure the rule of law is upheld.”

Phil Goff: “If a person has a vote they need to be an elected councillor. But part of the challenge is to ensure that we are representing the whole of the community. What was imposed on Auckland with the board was wrong.” David Hay: “I believe Maori have the right to a seat at the table. But the framework can be improved by legislation. Being represented by a non-voting system is wrong. There should be Maori wards.” Mark Thomas: “It’s wrong to mix elected members role with non-elected. I’ll have the two Maori representatives on one committee. They don’t need to vote [with the governing body].”

‘We’re making a stand’

F&P factory nears the end

By Scott Yeoman

T

ania Mahoney says fresh faces and fresh ideas are needed on the Howick Local Board and that means a changing of the guard. “I wanted to stand against them,” the 50-year-old accountant said of her decision to run for local office for the first time. “I’ve lived in the Pakuranga and Howick area for over 35 years...so I’m passionate about the area and I didn’t want to let the same board get in.” Mrs Mahoney’s Labour Party running-mate Allan Hawea, 57, feels the same way and said there is complacency on the Howick Local Board. “They’ve been in so long and the expectation is that they’ll be there [again] because of the demographic of the ward,” he said. Mr Hawea, who lives in Flat Bush, said change is needed for things to improve and so he and Mrs Mahoney are running for a seat on the Howick Local Board in the Pakuranga subdivision under the Labour Party banner. Mrs Mahoney said she would like to see the community spirit that used to exist in Pakuranga 30 years ago be reignited. “We can come together as a community to do that.” But she said for this to hap-

interaction: Tania Mahoney and Allan Hawea are running for a seat on the Howick Local Board, Pakuranga subdivision, under the Labour Party banner. Times photo Scott Yeoman

pen, more accessibility to the local board is needed. “We want to be able to interact with the community, not just be hidden away in the office.” Mrs Mahoney also wants more connectivity between the Howick, Botany and Pakuranga subdivisions – more working together, as well as working with Auckland Council. “Having a disconnection between council and the board is not helping our community,” she said. Domestic violence and mental health issues are also a big concern for her and she said she has seen a lot of both while doing community work as a volunteer. “I believe that a lot of the issues that we have to address at a local board level impact on that.” For example, Mrs Mahoney

said, the widespread transport issues in Howick, Botany and Pakuranga and the unnecessary stress it puts on families every day. Mr Hawea, an Anglican minister and Treaty settlement manager for local iwi, comes from a family where social service has always been very important and he said it continues to be a major motivation for him personally. “No matter what socioeconomic level they are, there are people who have needs in our community who are hurting.” For example, the elderly in Howick. “In Howick the stereotype is that because they are materially well off they don’t have these issues but there are elderly people who are really struggling.” Social needs and concerns

are everywhere, Mr Hawea said, and he wants to help find solutions. He said typically there is an expectation that Maori candidates should stand for seats in places like south Auckland. “But there are a lot of reasons why someone like me could also stand in the Howick Ward.” One of those reasons, and one that is important to both Mr Hawea and Mrs Mahoney, is the cultural diversity of the community being represented on the Howick Local Board. They said that is currently not happening. “As a Maori, I’m a bridge builder,” Mr Hawea said. As for concerns about party politics getting involved in local governance, both Labour candidates said they have heard the opposite. Mrs Mahoney said she has spoken to people that have concerns that candidates running as independents are not making their party lines clear and that this is confusing voters about who to vote for. “With this [Labour ticket], it’s transparency and we’re showing what values we align to.” Mr Hawea agreed. “I believe the policies of the Labour Party are good for our communities,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s a matter of transparency.”

“We continue to stay in touch and work with those staff still seeking employment.” Managing director and CEO Stuart Broadhurst announced to staff in April that the closure had nothing to do with their performance. “The business has enormous respect for this team – past and present. Until now, the factory’s staff have staved off the inevitable. However, the harsh reality is this factory is no longer sustainable due to the lack of scale and cost-competitiveness the facility and its products face in today’s global whiteware marketplace,” he said. “This factory would have closed much earlier, rather than experience a series of downsizings over recent years, if not for the loyalty and commitment of this team.” Mr Broadhurst said Fisher & Paykel’s approach to this announcement reflects the history of its strong relationship with staff, and the commitments the company has made. “Staff and their union representatives have been kept up-to-date through numerous consultations since as early as 2007, when this outcome was first indicated.” Fisher & Paykel, which was taken over by Chinese whiteware giant Haier in 2012 and subsequently delisted from the NZX, will continue to produce specialist componentry and production equipment in New Zealand, but will no longer operate this type of consumer whiteware manufacturing. In future, upgraded models of some of these refrigeration products will be manufactured utilising existing capacity at Fisher & Paykel’s plant in Thailand and through the wider group in China.

Howick Heritage Quiz is another fundraiser they are working on. “Our school has had so many firsts; the quiz will have questions on local as well as school history.” Wiping the dust off old school photographs, Ms Franke is keen to create a wall display that will showcase the tradition of the school. She has even got in touch with the local marae to find out more about a beautiful carving that sits regally in the school premises. “I was told it was carved by the local marae to mark Koanga Festival, the very first Maori festival held at the school,” she says. Connecting the past with the present, the school that is in the throes of making huge strides from a traditional to a progressive one, is currently offering an opportunity for people to leave a legacy. “If the alumni would like to donate, a donation of $100 will enable us to purchase a chair for the school hall. A plaque with the donor’s family or company name will be put on the back of the chair,” she says.

ekindling old connections, sharing stories and honouring its heritage is how Howick Intermediate, one of Howick’s oldest schools’ plans to mark its 50th jubilee year. To be celebrated on September 15 and 16, principal Yolande Franke is keen to give the students a sense of belonging as it connects with its history and tradition. As part of the 50th jubilee there will be an inaugural Howick Heritage Day with a school assembly that grandparents and friends of the school are invited to. “Being established in 1937 as Howick District High School so many people have been a part of this school or have sent their children here. In 1965 it was re-established as Howick Intermediate,” says Ms Franke. “We want to encourage everyone to come along and share their stories with us.” Having unearthed one of the old diaries of Mr Barton, a former principal from ’65-67, Ms Franke is currently leafing through it. “In those days principals had to keep diaries with detailed accounts of day-today happenings. It’s fascinating going through it. I’ve even read the opening remarks from the Minister of Education,” she

Her father became mayor of Howick – W. Mumtrepreneur wants to help other mothers By Tim George Like many mothers, Clare Williamson felt the pressure to go back to work after the birth of her second child. However, she did not want to take a menial job with fewer hours. She wanted to do something she was passionate about. Inspired by her first daughter’s experience with abnormal gut flora, she set up her own business, based around her own line of natural health products using essential oils, called Essential Mum. “Sharing my products and helping mums with the knowledge about how to live a more natural way of life is my small way of making a difference. However, along this journey I found myself wanting to do more,” Clare says. Clare had read many stories about other mothers who started their own businesses, but found herself wondering what happened to “the amazing women who are falling through the cracks”. Through her business, Clare met many “inspiring women with ideas and passion” who were unable to fulfil their own entrepreneurial desires because of financial pressures. Inspired by these mothers, in July Clare began a course to become an accredited life coach. “I wondered what the difference would be if I could

coach these women into their own businesses and help them to achieve balance between this and motherhood.” Clare now wants to expand her business to include coaching other ‘mumtrepreneurs’ so that they can achieve their own dreams. Her next step is to apply for an AMP People’s Choice Scholarship to finance this next step. “I have done what I can with what I have and if I am not successful I will continue in this way, but everyone should dream big, right? Especially when a dream is to make a big difference!” Anyone who is interested in helping Clare achieve her dream can vote for her on the AMP Scholarship website.

t’s hard to believe but in 2017, Howick celebrates 170 years of European settlement and there are plenty of locals who are preparing to put the region on the tourism map. It’s thought Maori lived in the area for about 1000 years and in 1847 the first retired soldiers came from Britain and formed the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps, with some settling in Howick. Life was tough in the antipodean coastal area but throughout the years the Fencibles built communities, families and businesses that founded Howick, as it is today. The village atmosphere has grown throughout the past 170 years and the wealth of heritage creates a unique opportunity to bring both domestic and international visitors to the area. The Howick Village Business Association says 170 years is a lot to shout about and they are well underway with plans to launch their new programme, Visit Howick, on November 1, 2016. People planning a trip to Auckland and looking for real New Zealand experiences will be able to access information via online networks and promotional activities that will capture their attention.

A highlight of the programme is a tour van driven by Howick’s very own town crier dressed in his regalia. The van, supplied by Chris and Tony Bull from The Lounge, is ready and waiting to collect people from around Auckland and to deliver them to great places where Howickians love to hang out. Local tourism operators are working on packages that showcase activities, history and Kiwi experiences that will bring visitors to Howick. This includes fishing charters, unique museums, Howick market and great local dining – the opportunities are endless. The things the locals love are sure to impress visitors. Howick’s business association has watched the growth in the tourism industry and wants to be part of New Zealand’s leading export earner. With the World Masters

Games coming to Auckland in April, 2017 there is no time to lose in planning for the potential influx of visitors. It is the world’s largest multisport event and with more than 25,000 competitors – Visit Howick plans to entice some of them to the wonderful Howick Village and other local great experiences. The business association proposed a plan to boost tourism to Howick during the Manukau City Council era but when all Auckland councils merged into one, it is believed the plans disappeared off the table. Visitor, experience or tourism businesses are encouraged to jump on board Visit Howick and use the marketing programme to reach their target audience. ■■ For more information contact info@visithowick.co.nz.

This flag flying is due to a devoted person in our community – Andrew Adams. Come rain or shine Andrew rises early in the morning and hoists the flag to whose celebration day it is, and in the

evening is back to bring it down. Andrew is one of the many silent, unassuming, passionate people in our community who we would like to thank. We are extremely grateful for making our

part of the globe a place of reflection, to remember our forefathers who went before us in the World Wars. We are so very thankful we are all here to enjoy the now. We thank you Andrew.

Local rangers make the panel Three local rangers were recently selected joined a newly-established GirlGuiding New Zealand Ranger Advocacy Panel to speak out publicly on issues affecting girls across New Zealand. Some of the topics on the minds of the nine Ranger members, aged from 13 to 16 years old, included Helen Clarke’s bid for Secretary General at the United Nations, family violence, cyber bullying and gender inequality. Let’s fix Hobsonville

Blenheim, which has a population of 30,600, has built an airport now capable of taking international flights and soon will be. The North Shore, which has a population of 205,605, doesn’t even have one. Hobsonville, in terms of domestic and international flights, is dysfunctional but with a bit of initiative could be made into one. This would go a long way to solving the Southern Motorway congestion problems and could even do away with the need for a second harbour crossing. Such a venture would be forward thinking and make a lot of traffic flow and economic sense. Blenheim has also built a huge sports stadium and a cultural centre, both the envy of the rest of the South Island. Their rates are less than a quarter of what Aucklanders pay. So how do they do it? In the not too distant past, the council and mayor invested in a slice of forestry which is making such a good return rates could almost be done away with. That is the kind of mayor and council that Auckland so desperately needs. Gary Hollis Mellons Bay

It is truly a sad day to see Steve Udy standing down from the Local Board. His wealth of life experience was seen regularly when he got his teeth into issues supporting the community, and stood up to the bureaucrats to get issues sorted out for the Howick ratepayers. Steve and his talent will be missed by the residents of Howick, especially the roading issues which were his passion. I was quietly hoping that Steve might have stood again and joined with John Spiller and myself and really helped to make the wheels spin even faster. Hopefully he will enjoy his extra spare time on the waves, where I believe he spends most of his leisure hours. Bob Wichman, Botany

understanding of issues affecting girls and their ideas for bringing about change, the panel – which includes three local rangers - marks a milestone for GirlGuiding’s transition to being ‘girl-led’. The three local panellists were Charlotte Howard (15) Wakaaranga Rangers, Sunnyhills; Mikayla MaddenSnoad (14) Pakuranga Rangers and Briana Valgre (14) Pakuranga Rangers. The rangers immersed themselves in the national workshop which was held in Auckland last month.

Animal lovers beware

I wish to thank the young couple who witnessed and cared for my pedigree Bichon puppy, who was knocked over on Saturday, August 27 at 7.40am in Bradbury Road, Howick, by a hit-and-run driver. Monti had been maliciously allowed to escape by a bully, who trespassed on my property, cut the lock which secures his gate during the gale force winds on Friday night, August 26. Monti is recovering at the vets following extensive surgery for a broken leg, hip and cracked pelvis at considerable cost to me. Zenda Smith

Skills lacking

I would like to bring to your attention the recent install of fibre broadband connection to my friend’s house in Ullswater Place, Half Moon Bay. The fibre cable is exposed (pictured) on the street side and not buried, where it could be damaged by kids or when mowing the lawn. The contractors are taking shot cuts to save money for the service provider Chorus. Fibre installation is a major infrastructure project in our country and the workmanship and quality is of lowest standard and the staff employed to do the work are not skilled to do the work. Local Body Elections 2016 – Now we’re you’re talking

Wayne Huang:

Standing for the people By Tim George

W

ayne Huang once worked three jobs while studying full time. If there was a definition of the word driven, Mr Huang would be it. Mr Huang is running for a seat on the Howick Community Board in the Pakuranga subdivision. “I can see a lot of potential, [but] we can do better,” Mr Huang says. His key focuses are on community safety and accessible government. “When I came here 17 years ago, I felt very safe. Even in the night time, walking along the street.” If elected, Mr Huang wants to install CCTV cameras to cut down on crime, particularly along the Tamaki Estuary. Accessible government is particularly important to Mr Huang. With the Auckland Unitary Plan underway, Mr Huang says it is more important than ever that local government keeps the community informed of the policies it will be undertaking.

wayne huang: Wants less lip service and more action from local government. Times photo Scott Yeoman

If he is elected, he wants to make sure the Pakuranga Town Centre grows as a place for business, keep rates to a reasonable level and use his experience as a businessman and an immigrant to improve the community both economically and in terms of cultural integration. “These people are our great asset. How we can unlock that potential to serve our community? I think that’s a big challenge and I have the unique skills [because] I was a

migrant.” Running as an independent, Mr Huang believes his lack of party affiliation will enable him to be a more effective representative for his community’s interests. A first generation New Zealander, Mr Huang moved to New Zealand from China in 1992. He has resided in Pakuranga for the last 16 years. He has a Masters in Commerce from the University of Auckland, and runs the Institute of Commercial Education in Highland Park. As well as being a successful businessman, Mr Huang has a lot of experience in local government. Previously, he served as deputy chairman of Manukau Council’s Botany Community Board from 2007 to 2010, and on the Howick Local Board from 2010 to 2013, in the portfolios of Economic & Business and Ethnic Affairs. As part of his focus on community safety, Mr Huang took part in a Safer Plates event run by Community Patrols of New Zealand last Saturday at the Institute of Commercial Education at 13 Aberfeldy Ave.

arrived in New Zealand 25 years ago. “But now it’s time to stop talking and start doing things,” he says determinedly. “Our current councillors are very nice people but one has to be tough if you want to improve transport and law and order.” He speaks passionately about speedways, monorails and shuttle buses from shopping malls to railway stations. “We can get rid of a lot of traffic problems if we build a multi-storey car park at Botany Town Centre or Pakuranga Plaza and allow people to park without the fear of cars being towed away. This would allow people to park their cars and hop on to a shuttle.” Talking about finding solutions to the traffic congestion on motorways he suggests: “We can build a speedway beside motorways for people who travel the long distances.”

oing from the number of people who wave out to him as he is being interviewed by the Times just outside the Botany Library, one can safely say that Paul Young is a very popular man. Standing in the upcoming Auckland Council election as councillor in the Howick Ward, this is not his first tryst with politics. In the Botany 2011 by-election to replace Pansy Wong, Mr Young formed the New Citizen Party and scored third highest after Jami-Lee Ross and Labour’s Michael Wood. However, this time he is standing as an independent and is not putting up any signage. “People who know me will vote for me,” he says confidently. “All I am telling people to do is register to vote. “In 2011, 60 per cent of the Asian community didn’t vote or were not registered,” he says. A photographer and event promoter by profession, Mr Young is winding up his digital photography business of 20 years at the Somerville Shopping Court to focus on his political career. From inviting international artistes for events at SkyCity to currently organising the Richard Clayderman Concert, he has been involved in community events ever since he

When it comes to law and order, Mr Young says he is an old hand at informing people about their responsibility and the right way to go about reporting crime. He has been a go-to person at the Somerville Shopping Court— for those who are concerned about their safety. Having being a part of the Asian Council for Reducing Crime he says: “I always go with my camera or ask my staff to shoot pictures of the number plate of the cars that keeps circling the complex in an attempt to target shopkeepers. I then call 111 and inform them of suspicious activities,” he says, recalling the times dodgy-looking characters have fled the scene after spotting him with a camera. “We need more surveillance cameras that can trace criminal activities easily. “Our rates have gone up but where is the money going? With the increase of around 45,000 immigrants who bring in more money, how come there is only one policeman added in proportion to the population increase?” He also feels strongly about the fact that there is a lot of dense housing planned in Ormiston, “but where is the parking? Why are we not planning ahead?” These are tough problems he would like to provide the solutions for if elected in the council, he says.

It’s going to be a reality down at Half Moon Bay Marina as the boutique marina supermarket ups its range of gourmet foods. Juliet Monaghan and Chris Harris are the owner-operators of Fresh Choice Half Moon Bay and they are on the constant lookout for new trends. When their turn came to comply with the Liquor Act’s new requirement to present liquor in one location, it freed up space to house a range of specialty items, until then buried in the grocery aisles. Now people can browse in one spot through a range of items, such as artisan chocolate, Tuscan panforte and almond biscuits, locally-made oat cakes, Matakana Chocolate Brown and the snails. “We’ve always had a strong interest in gluten free and unique specialty foods,” Juliet says. They’re currently thumbing through a Coeliac Societyapproved list of gluten-free products. And they’ve joined a group of 20 Fresh Choice stores throughout the country who are planning to carry an exclusive range of lamb and beef provided by an organically-certified sheep and cattle farm in Nelson. “As we got to know our customers we were encouraged that they want these foods,” Juliet says. “But we also offer value for people who look for regular grocery items at a good price.” Chris describes the Half Moon Bay business as similar to a country store, owneroperated with freedom to

introduce all manner of treats and goodies. Having just celebrated the store’s fourth birthday Chris says it’s seen as community focused and owned. “The community talks about it as if it’s theirs and we want that,” he says. “After two years we realised the community was regarding it as their store. When we had shop lifting incidents recently we spent time telling the community we had this problem and identified the suspects. Locals engaged in this and assisted us in getting rid of them “Initially we were a soft target because we were unknown. But we’ve tightened procedures and they [suspects] are not keen on coming here.” Being situated on a marina is unusual, Chris says. “The catchment is much smaller because we are at the end of a road with no passing traffic. “We have to work harder to turn into a destination and the challenge from the get-go was to be in the uppermost of people’s minds, for them to want to come here.” They are well known for

their community efforts, including a monthly $500 donation (doubled for two months of the year) to local community groups and for their annual birthday bashes. “We try to make a song and dance about it,” Chris says. “We like our staff to embrace it and put out personal invitations. We’ve had bands playing in here – shopping doesn’t have to be boring.” And Chris and Juliet are not stopping at the marina, with plans underway for a larger Fresh Choice in Epsom expected to open next year. They’ve also hired an executive chef who is currently reviewing the Delishimo cafe menu, especially gluten, dairyfree and vegan offerings. Local is an important reason why they choose to promote their store in print media. Social media, Chris says, is tricky for supermarkets to deal with because it can be full of pitfalls. “The print way in the Howick and Pakuranga Times is more effective in dealing with our customers because the medium is in a local context and we like the local input.”

ast month we played host to 16 Pacific nations in Christchurch to negotiate the final terms of the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations Plus (PACER Plus) agreement. The Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region in the world and New Zealand is uniquely placed to take a leading role in pushing that economic growth. PACER Plus aims to create jobs, raise standards of living and encourage sustainable economic development in the Pacific by encouraging free trade in the region. Taking a leading role in economic growth and sustainability in the Pacific is part of our plan to deliver solid economic growth and higher incomes for New Zealanders. Much of our work in the region focuses on the sustainability of the region’s seafood industry and we are using our expertise to drive innovation in the industry.

Seafood exports reached nearly $1.8 billion for the year to June – 15 per cent more than the previous year. But it’s no longer enough to just produce the best. You also need to be the best producer. Consumers want to feel good about what they are buying. That’s why the Government and industry are co-investing in the Primary Growth Partnership, including the Precision Seafood Harvesting and the Mussel Spat programmes to create a better, more sustainable industry. Working with the sector we are committed to ensuring our seafood industry is not just the best, but the most sustainable too. The industry is benefitting from this year’s Budget package to support innovation. We

are investing up to $25 million over three years to support the establishment of new privately-led Regional Research Institutes to encourage growth outside of our major cities. Along with our ultra-fast broadband programme, this package is laying the foundation for an expected 3.4 per cent growth rate over the next two years and has helped lift wages by 25 per cent since 2008. It’s a clear sign focusing on building international trade relationships and building a solid, growing, innovative economy is delivering real results for families all over New Zealand. Year 13 student Nichola Niemack says she wouldn’t have got the job as a qualified barista at A & J Cafe at the Half Moon Bay Marina had it not been for the training she got at college. Seventeen-year-old Olivia Truscott who also works as a barista at Vector Arena points out that the life skill that she learnt at school looks good on her CV.

“I work at Vector Arena as part of the Gateway programme but I can only do it because I learnt the skill of coffee making at our college. Now we have a once-a- week roster to make coffee at the school cafe. “Though you get burnt quite a lot in the beginning, it’s a great feeling being able to cater to individual needs of clients who want more foam, strong coffee or coffee shots,” she says.

Riffs and raps dominated the stage over three nights of young rock music action in this year’s Auckland finals of Rockshop Bandquest. Forty bands played off at the Dorothy Winstone Centre from Thursday through Saturday, with the top bands each night winning credit with The Rockshop to the value $400 each for their school. Rockshop Bandquest is for bands of two or more members, and this year has drawn over 150 entries from intermediate or primary schools, which play a short set of covers or original songs. Now in its sixth year, founder and director Glenn Common says he’s noticing an increase in the level of sophistication and performance skills of kids at intermediate age. “They’re watching YouTube, they’re following aspirational heroes in the Kiwi music

t’s not very often that students of hospitality and food technology get to run their own cafe at school. But for Pakuranga College, the longstanding dream was translated into reality recently at the official launch of the school cafe. Marking the special occasion were principals of local schools Brent Jenkin, principal Wakaaranga School and Stephanie Young, deputy principal Farm Cove Intermediate who were there to support the opening of the cafe. Principal of Pakuranga College Michael Williams looked very pleased as it meant ticking off one more meticulously planned development, with the next one on the list being a swanky new gym. The atmosphere at the cafe was upbeat as students Jayden Roberts and Sophie Lu strummed the guitar, welcoming guests to have a taste of freshly made coffee and tasty bites. Savouries and sweet treats like chocolate éclairs, brownies, apple tarts and mini quiches were laid out under the expert guidance of Sheena Prankerd, HOD Hospitality,

Market day madness Howick College’s school houses organise fundraisers through the year to support their chosen charities. MacDonald House supports Ronald McDonald House – a charity for Kiwi families who are away from home with a hospitalised child - and organised a lunchtime market on August 5. Stalls included pre-loved books, arts and crafts, henna tattoos, games, photo booth and food. They raised around $1000. “Helping with fundraising encourages students to show citizenship to support their communities and participate in leadership activities,” said Howick College

unique opportunity for singers aged between eight and 18 years with a passion for performance and singing is on offer to ignite interest in opera and classical vocal music. The 10th Opera Idol Song Contest is aimed at school students throughout Auckland. It’s been produced annually by the Opera Factory Trust since 2007. Over its history the competition has shown the talents of young singers in training, many who have entered tertiary training, become finalists in prestigious local and international competitions, entered emerging artist programmes and also developed successful careers in New Zealand and overseas. Singers will be accompanied by professional pianist Rosie Barnes and this year’s judges include itinerant teacher Christine Hallett, and Andrew Conley, a professional opera singer in New Zealand and the UK and also a founding member of Opera Factory. Prizes include money towards their ongoing studies and other performing opportunities

through Opera Factory Trust and extended networks. This year entrants will also be invited to participate in a school holiday workshop ‘Opera Chorus Sing-In’ following the contest. They will get the chance to learn some famous opera choruses and work with professional tutors and singers to prepare the music and semistage the selected items. Opera Idol- the Finals is at 7pm on September 9 at St Marks Church Hall, 95 Remuera Road, Remuera. Email admin@operafactory. com or phone 921-7801.

In order to serve `time-poor’ clients better, owner Kraiya Archvarin has introduced a QR code that you can scan with your smart phone and order food online. You can either visit their user friendly website www.theelephant. co.nz that displays an array of photographs of mouth-watering dishes, starting with tongue-tingling entrees that make you want to eat them instantaneously, or then scan their QR code which has been reproduced here. “It makes it easy to make the online payment and also mention the time you want the food ready by,” says Kraiya who wants to ensure that the food is hot and ready to be collected by the customer. “This makes it easier for someone who is returning from work and wants a takeaway. They can quickly drop by to collect the food without the hassle of having to wait for their order or to make a payment,” she says. “It also gives the clients a chance to visually see the dishes instead of

lose to 50 accredited volunteer interviewers, eight volunteer interviewers in training and another six doing administration or clinic reception dedicated more than 10,000 hours of service to the Pakuranga-Eastern Manukau Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in 2016. In her annual report, retiring chairperson Kim Godinich says people volunteer for different reasons. “But the reason I keep doing this is because of the many interesting people I meet and the rich and varied experiences, and personalities, that make up our volunteers and our clients,” she says. One of the biggest changes in the 2016 year was the re-opening of the CAB’s Botany agency in

new premises. The agency had been closed for more than a year and, she says, the organisation is grateful to AMP and the Botany Town Centre management which have provided the new offices rent-free for the next five years. CAB Pakuranga was chosen as one of seven CABs in Auckland to offer a service for new migrants. The Immigration New Zealand initiative provides workshops on topics relating to easier settlement. They have included financial literacy, employment, water safety, positive parenting, job search and starting up a New Zealand business. CAB Pakuranga has employed two people part-time to organise, network and administer the workshops. They are part of CAB Migrant Connect.

The Pakuranga CAB received $12,800 from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment to run the workshops.

Building values reaching peak While the value of building work put in place for the 2016 June quarter is at record levels, actual building activity is now close to 2004 peak levels, according to latest Statistics New Zealand data. The value of building work grew 5.5 per cent in the June quarter, following 5.7 per cent growth in the March 2016 quarter. The actual value of building work for the June 2016 quarter was $4.9 billion, up 21 per cent from the same quarter in 2015 and the

highest since the series began in 1989. Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) chief executive, Warwick Quinn says this should come as no surprise to anyone given the amount of recent media coverage and the Government’s initiatives to spur residential construction in Auckland to help address housing affordability concerns. However, he says, it can be

misleading to look solely at the value of work in place as a single measure for building activity “While there is no disputing the value of work in place is at record levels and the construction market is booming, the actual number of residential buildings being consented is still some way off previous highs, particularly in Auckland,” Mr Quinn says. When comparing the latest results to the June 2013 quarter, residential building

activity has increased 45 per cent. But there has been a 74 per cent increase in the value of work in place while the average cost of each residential housing unit (new dwellings and apartments) has increased 20 per cent since 2013. “The growth in apprentice numbers is more closely aligned to the level of actual building activity and not the value of that activity,” he says. “While New Zealand is at record levels in terms of the value of building work in place, training levels are similar to where they have traditionally been when

■■ The Botany Agency received 1036 enquiries with the top 10 categories: Relationships (11.44%); conditions of work (7.94%); rental housing (7.27%); citizenship and immigration (6.59%); legal services (6.19%); consumer law (5.79%); income support (3.1%); budgeting and general financial difficulties (2.9%); communication (2.56%); law enforcement (2.29%).

compared with the number of builds. New Zealand is currently building about 29,000 new residential units a year and BCITO has a similar number of carpentry apprentices when New Zealand had that number of new builds before the global financial crisis. “Demand for apprentices in all areas of construction remains strong and looks to remain that way for some years to come,” Mr Quinn says. “This was indicated in the National Construction Occupations Projections Report and the National Construction Pipeline Report.”

educing costs is one of the biggest issues in home renovations so it is important to plan well. The more detailed the plans, the less time and money wasted. It’s also important to check to see if you’re eligible for a tax credit or a financial assistance programme. If you’re reasonably handy, you could do some of the work yourself. Ideally, you should always budget a little extra money for

when unexpected costs come up; around 10 per cent of the budget is a good guideline. ■■ Choosing the right expert: Before choosing specialists for a renovation project, be sure to ask lots of questions. It’s important for you to know how many hours the job will take, if they are specialists in this type of work, if they have a licence and if their work is guaranteed. Above all, don’t hesitate to ask to see some of their previous jobs.

■■ Do your own renovations: If you prefer to do the work yourself, don’t forget to find out about council regulation. ■■ Ask yourself whether you plan to eventually sell your home and would like to increase its value. If so put all the effort into the kitchen and bathroom. A new roof, hardwood floors and a fresh coat of paint could also increase the home’s appeal and give a good return on investment.

So many exciting workshops at holiday programme Choosing the selection of workshops to offer those aged 6–16 years-old for the Uxbridge school holiday programmes at the Uxbridge Arts and Culture, Howick is never a difficult task. It is an absolute joy encouraging creativity and teaching art to children and our dedicated team at Uxbridge feel privileged to be able to share these great opportunities with your kids. In October, we’re offering children keen on photography a oneday “Point and Shoot” workshop, perhaps in time for Christmas camera gifts from Mum and Dad! Kids passionate about fine art

can choose from a ‘Do-Yoo-Doodle’ workshop, a ‘See it, Draw it’ workshop or our popular new option, ‘Henna Painting and Design’. Meanwhile, if your child likes to get a little messy then our ‘Crazy Clay and Glazing’ workshops are a great choice and are very popular. Making a comeback in October is our ‘Gorgeous Garlands’ morning, where children get to make beautiful hand crafted garlands for any special occasion or to hang in their room. And something brand new to Uxbridge is our action-based holiday workshops.

‘Is the Force with You’ and ‘Circus Fairies’ both include a wonderful combination of balancing and strength, agility and nerves, skills and tricks and there’s lots of interactive challenges and games. The Uxbridge holiday programmes keep getting bigger and better and much of the success can be credited to our experienced and passionate tutors who nurture, motivate and inspire children to create. If your child enjoys their holiday experience, Uxbridge also has a wide range of afterschool art activities which you can view and register in at any time.

Community shares its fruit S

tudents from Howick Intermediate have found a small way to give back to their community. Teacher Bo Hensley said the initiative Fruit from the Community to the Community was started by Olivia Montgomery, a Howick resident, who saw the amount of fruit not being picked and used, but just hanging on trees in east Auckland. “She placed an advertisement on the East Auckland Grapevine offering

to pick fruit and give it to people who needed it. Olivia had so many responses that she was unable to pick it all,” Ms Hensley said. This where Room 6 Howick Intermediate students come in - a small group, accompanied by Ms Hensley, is available to pick the fruit. “Another small group then use this fruit to create marmalades, jams, juices and preserves, using the school’s Food Specialist facilities,” she

We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

“Thank you so much for your wonderful and helpful teaching” - Debra “I just recently got offered a place in Auckland University for all my selected courses. I could not have done it without you” - Miraj “I am sincerely grateful for all the help you have provided me whilst teaching me Mathematics. In such a short span of time I feel so much more confident” - Aakriti “I think he has got a lot out of the sessions with you, it makes a huge difference getting help from someone who actually knows how to teach” - Cody’s Mother

We are only 6 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

Market madness Page 15

Fencibles mark 20th anniversary In 1995, Pakuranga Town AFC and Howick AFC – two local clubs established in the 1960s – joined forces to bring top senior football back out east. A year later, Fencibles United Association Football Club played its first season in the blue and red stripes. As part of the club’s 20th anniversary celebrations, a special exhibition match is being held tomorrow night at the William Green Domain in Highland Park. Kicking off at 7.30pm, the Pakuranga Town AFC old boys will take on the Howick AFC old boys for the inaugural Danna Mandry Trophy. The trophy is named after the current club secretary who has been with Fencibles United since the amalgamation. Club president Pat Cannon said Mandry had been a fantastic servant to the club.

With about 2000 playing members, Fencibles is now one of the biggest football clubs in New Zealand and has male and female members ranging from five years old to some in their 60s. r Cannon said he hopes the event will instil some history and pride in the club, which has slipped down the senior grades over the past few years. Nearly all of the old boys playing tomorrow went on to play for Fencibles in some shape or form when the two clubs joined and many of them are still members. First team players and management staff from over the years will be at William Green Domain tomorrow night to show their support and catch up with familiar faces, as will many other club members, past and present. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

O

nce again the world champion Aussie Diamonds have pipped New Zealand’s Silver Fern netballers at the post by winning the inaugural Quad Series final in Melbourne 60-55. There is, however, genuine hope for a Ferns team despite the fact goal shoot Bailey Mes got the yips in the final quarter when the Diamonds defence tightened the screws at one end of the court while 1.93m Caitlin Bassett ended up scoring a remarkable 53 goals for the game down the other. With debutant goal keep Jane Watson and the relatively new goal attack Ameliaranne Ekenasio rising to the occasion beautifully in earlier games, there was much to admire about the Ferns’ performance, though Bassett’s 12cm height advantage was too much for Watson to cope with in the final. With coach Janine Southby encouraging a confident swift passing game, Ferns shooters Mes and Ekenasio had been voted the most valuable players against England

Meanwhile more young women golfers are emerging to challenge Lydia Ko for the world No 1 spot. Lydia could manage no better than fifth in the Manulife LPGA Classic at Cambridge, Ontario, this week despite shooting a bogey-free third round 64. Having won a silver medal behind Inbee Park at the Rio Olympics, Ko’s putter hasn’t allowed her to add to her four wins on the LPGA circuit this year, one behind Thailand’s big hitting Ariya Jutanugarn. At 20, Jutanugarn is just one year older than Ko while Canada’s Brooke Henderson, at 18, is a year younger.
