uckland Council has thrown its weight behind protecting the views from Stockade Hill. The move, a victory for the vociferous and dedicated supporters of the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Assocation (HRRA), has seen council put forward a change to the Auckland Unitary Plan (called proposed plan change 3) that seeks to protect views of Rangitoto, Hauraki gulf and the Islands from a public open space – Stockade Hill, Howick. In a notification released today by council’s John Duguid, manager – plans & places, the plan change proposes to delete an existing local public viewshaft that originates from the base of Stockade Hill and introduce a new viewshaft and a building height restriction area into the Local Public Views Overlay that originates from the top

of Stockade Hill. “In accordance with Section 86B (3) of the RMA (Resource Management Act) the proposed plan change rules have immediate legal effect. Submissions on the proposed change close on September 7. Meanwhile, the HRRA is pleased council has “at last moved to put into place viewshaft protection for our outstanding views from Stockade Hill”. “It has taken a year of writing, an expensive High Court battle ,

meetings with Council Planners over Stockade Hill and official reports plus many hours spent collecting signatures online and in the street from the public in support of this protection ( 6500 signatures ) to get this result,” said HRRA chair Gayleen Mackereth. “HRRA is very grateful for the support of Howick and Pakuranga Times to help raise public awareness over the issue.” An HRRA campaign run with the Times to raise funds for the
legal battle raised more than $31,400. “There is still a way to go to go re the Plan Change and we are disappointed that the Mixed Housing Urban zoning is likely to remain,” said “But Howick residents can heave a huge sigh of relief that the Plan Change means council supports that this view is significant and important to Howick and its community and that it needs and deserves to be protected.”

he search is on to find the person responsible for shooting a cat with a slug gun in Beachlands last weekend. A givealittle page has been set up as a reward fund, which will be paid to anyone who provides information that leads to the conviction and prosecution of the person responsible. The page was set up by Manukau After Hours Veterinary Clinic after staff treated one-year-old tuxedo cat Richie, who arrived at the clinic in a critical condition, struggling to breathe, lethargic and refusing to eat. An X-ray showed three slug gun pellets underneath Richie’s skin, one of which had punctured a lung causing internal bleeding. Niki Hotter, Manukau After Hours Clinic staff member, says they suspect the attack was deliberate. “One pellet could mean it was an accident, but three means that somebody was most likely aiming at Richie. I would hate to think there is somebody out there that is using our cats for target practice.” Hotter says slug gun wounds are becoming an increasing problem, with another cat arriving at the clinic a few days after Richie with one slug gun pellet under the skin. She says she hopes this isn’t the outcome of negative attitudes towards cats. Beachlands resident and Richie’s owner Gillian Richards says she is devastated to know somebody intentionally hurt her pet. “I was shocked and mildly angry when the vet told me there was one slug gun pellet, but when I heard there

were three and it was quite apparent that it was deliberate act to hurt him, I was furious and sickened to think that someone would do this,” she says. With Richie now recovering at home, Richards says she is determined to find out who is behind the attack. As well as helping track down the perpetrator, the After Hours vet clinic contributed significantly to the cost of Richie’s more than $2000 treatment. Hotter says the givealittle page is having great success with more than $1500 already raised and donations coming from as far away as an SPCA officer in the United Kingdom. If the reward is not claimed, Hotter says the funds raised will be donated to Paw Justice to help with other cruelty and neglect cases. Local police and the SPCA are also following up on the case. https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/helpforrichie
Bedroom goes up in flames Occupants of an Ormiston house have escaped a house fire unhurt. Firecomm, the NZ Fire Service communications unit, told the Times the fire was at a two-storey home at 394 Ormiston Road on Sunday at around 5pm. One bedroom was involved and all persons were accounted for, FireComm said. This latest fire brings back memories of an horrific fire in December
in Plantation Avenue in Ormiston which shocked the community after it claimed four lives 47-year-old Sri Lankan refugee advocate Kailesh Thanabalasingham, his 39-year-old wife Bhamini, five-year-old son Bareth and 65-year-old mother-inlaw Umaddhevi.

Councillors Dick Quax and Sharon Stewart have expressed satisfaction with a proposed plan change to protect the views from Stockade Hill. “A report to council acknowledges that Stockade Hill is a significant heritage site and the Landscape Architect engaged by council noted that Stockade Hill provided 360 degree views,” the councillors said in a joint

statement to the Times. “However, the views to the west and southwest are constrained by existing vegetation. The report recommends that the views out to Rangitoto, Motukorea (Browns Island), Motutapu, Motuihe, Waiheke and Motukaraka as well as Musick Point and Beachlands be protected.” Cr Stewart said that while the proposed plan change is not everything she had hoped for, it
is a major win for the community. “I had hoped that the recommendation might have been for the 360 degree view protection but I have read the report and believe that the most important views have been protected.”

at the getaway car window before he collapsed. Paramedics performed CPR on the owner for about 20 minutes, Walters said, before he was rushed off to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition. The store owner’s nephew, Charhampal Singh says “[Robert] saved a life on Friday and we are very grateful.” Singh says they will be improving the shop security as well as installing security cameras outside the store. This is not the first time the store has been targeted.
The Gossamer Liquor store was robbed at gunpoint in February which Counties Manukau Police posted on Facebook at the time. “It’s hard to survive. We have to be constantly alert, watching outside, being prepared for who will come into the store. It’s major pressure,” Singh says. “We can’t do much if there is somebody suspicious in our store. Often there are two or three of them and there is only one of us.” Singh says the only way to prevent these robberies is to have an increased police
presence in the area, particularly at night. “At night time it’s really dark and quiet in this area, it’s easy for robbers to attack. We need police patrolling this area more often than they do, which would help a lot in scaring attackers away” Howick Police Sergeant Brett Meale says Police have spoken with the driver of the getaway car. “We are following some lines of enquiry to identify the two males who entered the liquor shop and stole the liquor,” he says.

ACCIDENT
Six thieves made off with an undisclosed amount of jewellery after breaking in to Michael Hill at Botany Town Centre early Monday morning. The store was cordoned off and a security guard was stationed in front of the store on Monday before the broken window was boarded up. Detective Senior Sergeant Karen Bright said three vehicles were used in the burglary, which happened around 2am. Botany Town Centre manager Bronwyn Anchor said the thieves were able access the store with vehicles by driving through a strengthened gate. She declined to say how often burglaries occurred at the Centre but said generally between two and seven security guards are on site at one time. The vehicles have all been located by police. Police are investigating and are asking anyone with information about the burglary or stolen jewellery to contact Counties Manukau Crime Squad on 261 1300 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Pakuranga local is being hailed a hero for his quick thinking following the Gossamer Liquor store theft. Robert Walters arrived at the store on Friday afternoon, just minutes after the theft, to find the store owner collapsed on the concrete outside the store. “I saw glass all over the road and when I got out of my car, that’s when I saw a man collapsed on the ground,” he says. “He was having a heart attack.” He says when he arrived the storeowner had a weak pulse and didn’t appear to be breathing. “My instincts just kicked in. I yelled for help and the other store owners ran out. Neither had a phone so I used my own to call an ambulance. I started performing CPR and John, the neighbour from next door, ran out and assisted in the CPR, which the ambulance driver says might have been what saved his life.” Walters, who has completed basic first aid training in the past, says emergency services advised them to keep up the compressions until the ambulance arrived. Walters says according to a neighbour, the store owner had run out after three suspects and thrown a brick

Mothers’ support group takes off By Therese Henkin
A
fter a challenging day with her newborn, Sarah Rodgers was thankful to get out of the house for a short stroll to the mailbox at the end of the driveway. It was this trip to the mailbox, Sarah says, that sparked the idea to start a Mums N’ Bubs In-home support group, which has gained lots of support and interest since it was officially launched recently. “It was my first week at home with my little boy on my own. My husband had gone back to work and I was just having a really difficult day.” I met this elderly lady who was delivering newspapers, and I started chatting to her. She told me she was retired, but delivers newspapers because she needed to fill her days with something positive,” the mother of nine-week-old Joshua says. “I started to realise I had several neighbours who were retired and at home all day, and I wondered if they would like to spend some of their free time with me, a new mum who sometimes needed a little bit of help and company.” After asking around at her antenatal class if other mothers would be interested in

having women from the community pop in to help them out, she says the response was overwhelming. Sarah soon joined forces with her friend and mother of two Emma Reid to create the Facebook group Mums N’ Bubs In-Home Support – East Auckland. “All mothers need help at some stage, whether you have no support at all, or you are surrounded by friends and family most of the time. Adjusting to life at home with your newborn is hard.” Sarah says that even though she knew her husband would
be home at 3pm and that her mother would be visiting in a couple of hours to drop off dinner, she was still feeling overwhelmed. “It made me wonder how many other people were feeling the same way as me, especially those who don’t have the same support network that I have,” she says. The pair wanted to create a safe space for women to come forward and ask for help, without being judged. “It could be asking for help with anything. Email: mumsnbubs.eastauckland@gmail.com

rush-stroked with creativity, colour and everything else that an artist can ever dream of, Art Supplies recently opened its new store in Howick. Centrally located at 8/10 The Terraces, Wellington Street, (behind Monterey Cinemas), the opening of Art Supplies is great news for all those who have been frequenting it in the Howick-Pakuranga area for the last 20 years—and more recently at the Meadowlands Shopping Centre. The new location which is adjacent to the southern end of the Rice’s Mall has art lovers heave a sigh of relief to have a literal playground of mediums, right in their midst. The only dedicated store of art supplies for both, student and professional artists in east Auckland, Art Supplies is a one-stop-shop for canvasses, oils, acrylics paints, brushes, pencils and every art supply on the spectrum. Art Supplies has products for customers just starting to explore their artistic creativity through to the accomplished artist. The student range is more affordable. The store personnel, Caitlin Main who has been with the store for the last three and a half years and Missi Moretz, a trained graphic designer are very knowledgeable and passionate about art and crafts. They are happy to pass on the information to clients and believe that there is nothing more satisfy-
ing than spending time with clients understanding how their latest project is progressing and providing support when required. You think of it and they have it. A comprehensive range of products is available in-store but if you cannot find the item you are looking for, Caitlin and Missi are able to suggest alternatives or source the product for customers. “Understanding that customers are on a lifelong adventure to develop their talents and skills, we enjoy introducing them to new products and techniques,” says Caitlin. There is plenty of parking available, allowing customer’s time to come in and browse the broad range of products available in-store. Customers are also able to shop online at Artsupplies.co.nz and have their purchases delivered or picked up instore. Art Supplies, 8/10 Wellington St, Howick. Phone 533 6219.

HBH committed to village By Kelly Teed
H
BH Senior Living has taken over possession of Stevenson Village. The social housing complex hit headlines last year when it was put up for sale in October, raising concerns over what would happen to existing tenants. HBH Senior Living chief executive Bonnie Robinson says they purchased it because they wanted to ensure low cost housing for older people would remain in the Howick area. “We thought if a developer bought it and housing was lost [then] you’ll never get it back in the Howick area.
“We are committed to keeping that level of social housing on site and everything is staying the same – we’re currently refurbishing some of the units that were vacant when we took possession and slowly filling them up with new tenants,” she said. Robinson said they are looking to improve the number of services and activities available on site and are encouraging tenants to think about what they’d like to see. Stevenson Village was established in 1997 and offers independent living apartments, rest home and hospital care facilities. It had a CV of more than $9 million in October.

Market Day
Living in an amicable and friendly basis with our neighbours is a bit of a problem for some people in our modern society, change of neighbours and tenants, a busy lifestyle, cultural differences; all tend at times to be an issue when problems arise. One of the most common difficulties we have noticed at the bureau is problems over fences and boundaries. For example, putting up a new fence without talking to your neighbour can cause friction if not handled properly. Repairs to existing fences is also a common problem and both issues can escalate to a serious level causing anxiety and sleepless nights to the parties concerned and has at times led to neighbour wars, an outcome to be avoided at all costs Ideally, your neighbour and you should be able to resolve any problem by discussing it together. If for example you both agree to replace the existing fence due to its deteriorating condition, you’ll need to come to an agreement about building the fence, as well as details such as how high it should be, what building materials it will be made of, and how much to spend on it. Then document and sign to avoid any issues arising in the future. Repairing a fence is generally the responsibility of the owners (not the tenants) of the property. If you share a boundary you will share equal responsibility for the work on a boundary fence. However, it should be noted that if the fence is damaged or destroyed by the occupants on one side of the boundary (e.g. damage caused by the roots of their trees), then they would have to pay for all of the repairs. If one neighbour wants to repair the fence out of their own pocket, or pay a greater share of the cost (e.g. because they want a more expensive fence than the other neighbour) then they can - if their neighbour is happy with this arrangement. Here again though another problem could arise if you and your neighbour cannot agree and a fence is then erected on your side of the boundary at your cost, then the neighbour or a new owner of the property can at a later date insist on a boundary fence being built on the actual boundary line and you would have to share equal costs. As you can see, what seems to be a simple exercise putting up or repairing a fence can have unwanted consequences. If you have any problems or issues in this or any other area, please contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau by visiting us, email, phone or fax our experienced volunteers will be able to help you. ■■ Solutions is a regular column from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau, Phone 576 8331 and Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, phone: 271- 5382 or 0800-267 222 for free, confidential and informative help.

t is not very often that you see a roomful of people having breakfast with hearing protectors on. Around 30 people gathered at The Lounge on Friday morning for a breakfast hosted by Chris and Tony Bull, the creative couple behind the boutique event centre in Howick. As a part of the Silent Leadership Challenge hosted by The National Foundation for the Deaf, the breakfast was
hosted for companies including Bay Audiology Howick, Total Focus, Echo Barrier, Supply Force, Bull Electrical and Spillers Hammer Hardware that participated in the challenge. People struggled a bit to savour the lovely brekkie and have a conversation across the table with the hearing protectors on. Thank you for the support On behalf of Pillars I would like to thank you very much for your wonderful support and assistance recently given to Pillars. The newspaper article has gone a long way to recruiting new mentors for our wonderful children. We had a fantastic response to the article, thank you very much for this opportunity. Children of prisoners need hope and guidance to grow up to be healthy adults. They need a safe place to live, care and protection during their parent’s absence, comfort and affection, food and access to health care, an education, their public status and private self image preserved and an opportunity to reach their full potential. I thank you once again for your generosity and support that you have provided Pillars and our families. Verna McFelin, MNZM Chief Executive, Pillars

After reading the article about illegal parking on Cascades Road (Times, July 27), I thought I would mention another ongoing problem at the other of the road - the pedestrian crossing. To cross the road from one side of Pakuranga Road at that intersection is a terrifying experience for me. Buttons only exist on one side of Pakuranga Road, not the other. Had a driver not honked their horn at me to tell me when to cross, I would have been stuck on the traffic island longer, still frightened for my life. It’s a poorly-designed crossing and another area at high risk for accidents. A Perkins Pakuranga

Despite making the offer to pay back everything she has stolen from the tax payer this does not excuse her crime. Currently she is paid by the taxpayer so how is she going to pay back all the money she fraudulently stole from the same tax payer who currently pays her wages? The question we must ask ourselves is do we, the voting public of New Zealand want openly dishonest people running this country? I believe the answer to this question is obvious – NO we do not. The honourable thing for Metiria Turei to do is to step down from the position of coleader of the Green Party and leave parliament. They say there is honour among thieves. Let us see how honourable Metiria Turei really is. Come September 23, hopefully the voting public will cast

Alison jubilant over road’s new fixture A
lison Ivill loves her neighbourhood. And her neighbourhood loves her right back. When the Times popped over to see her in Cockle Bay, she was deep in conversation with the driver of the garden refuse truck. It didn’t stop her waving at every car and bus that passed her stretch of Pah Rd. Everyone waved or tooted back. In all likelihood, the widow is probably well known way up to Howick Village and beyond as she is mad about walking and clocks up an astonishing number of kilometres each day. Her fitness and joyous demeanour belie her condition though. Alison has bowel cancer. Her excitement, and the reason the Times visited, was all over a fence - a new, galvanised fence many hundreds of metres long. It has replaced a decades-old rusty, rickety affair she reckons is as old as her house which was built in 1966. “It was disgusting. It was all rusted with no top rail,” she says. “When I saw the two council guys first arrive I put a challenge to them...I said I’d like to see a fence up before I died. I don’t know how long I’ve got to go.” Alison, who was guarded

about her age and described herself as a retired old lady, was pleased as punch that the job was completed in a matter of days. Impeccable, she says.
“These guys were really great. I still can’t believe council did something in such a short time, especially in Howick.”
Pokemon is back! Just when you thought the Pokeman craze had died, there have been groups of people spotted in the last 10 days glued to their cell phones. Even the winter chill couldn’t put off the Pokemon enthusiasts on Wednesday evening standing transfixed outside New World at
the Botany Town Centrethey were on a Legendary Pokemon hunt! Monday morning saw a motley group of middle-aged people with a smattering of youngsters outside Basalt in Howick. One of them who found time to look up from the screen said: “This is a great way to meet new people.”
For the love of dance The much-anticipated Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival brings primary and intermediate schools across the local communities to showcase their dance moves and fancy footwork. There was a lot of excitement as this year 13 schools were organised by Our Lady Star of the Sea on Monday and Tuesday, August 7 and 8. Another 17 schools were hosted by Cockle Bay School on Wednesday and Thursday, August 9 and 10. The events were held at Elim Christian
College auditorium. Cockle Bay had two groups participating this year, says Kristen Bell, drama and dance specialist teacher and one of the main organisers of the festival. “Year 3 and 4 danced to Funhouse, and Year 5 and 6 danced to a medley of songs covering different genres, from Fame to Jump, a dance to captivate the audience. “Both groups are taught as part of an enriching dance extension programme at Cockle Bay School,” she said.
Students knit for a cause By Therese Henkin A local school is hosting a knit-athon to help keep the community warm. The knit-a-thon is part of a new Student Volunteer Army (SVA) initiative to encourage volunteering and community work among primary school students. Room 22 from Our Lady Star of the Sea School has teamed up with the SVA to knit as many granny squares as they can, which will be stitched together at the end of the term to create blankets for those in need. The class, which only learnt how to knit last week, has already knitted more than 61 squares. They have recruited parents, teachers and community members to help donate knitted squares to the cause. The students spent a little time

They hope to encourage many more volunteers to help knit squares through social media, the school website and their knitting event. ■■ The knit-a-thon is on Friday, September 22 in the school hall. Waiheke home and a Grey Lynn renovation have taken out this year’s Supreme Awards in the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year competition. Pitch Construction Limited won four regional awards with a Waiheke home, including the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home over $2 million Award. The company was also awarded the Outdoor Living Award for the same property. Broswick Builders Limited was awarded the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme Renovation of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation Award over $1 million. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award and the Sustainable Home Award. Judges called the winning House of the Year a work of art. “With outstanding craftsmanship and exceptional finishing, this cliff top home – built on a very difficult and narrow site –
is a place to relax and enjoy,” they said. “The seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living morph together, presented with a variety of materials and colour. This provides a superb backdrop to the finishing touches by a very discerning owner. “The home is determined by the central outdoor living, covered courtyard. This contains an open fire, outdoor dining and lounge areas, BBQ, and swimming pool, that separates the guest pavilion from the main living pavilion. The views from these areas is to die for. “With attention to detail in every area of the home, it was quite simply faultless, and a deserving winner.” Judges said the winning renovation was a traditional Grey Lynn cottage located close to the street, and gives little away to what’s happening behind. “Both old and knew blend in an interesting way making the home full of surprises,” they said. “Exquisite detailing both
inside and out, a mix of quality materials, along with exposing some of the structure internally, clearly shows everything has been thought through and executed perfectly. “A new master suite, a large kitchen, living, and dining area make this a very comfortable home. A joy to inspect.” The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on August 5 at SkyCity. The winning builds were celebrated by members of the Auckland Registered Master Builders Association and members of the local construction industry. There were 32 Gold Award winners from the Auckland region, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists. National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on November 25 at SkyCity in Auckland.

Massive Co take show on the road M
assive Company is taking its beautiful 2016 show, The Wholehearted, on a national tour in September and October. After a successful premiere season at Auckland’s Q Theatre and Mangere Arts Centre – Nga Tohu o Uenuku, from which reviews described the work as “joyous, poignant, hilarious and expressive”, “relatable, humoristic” and “resonant”, The Wholehearted will embark on a 6+ stop tour of the country, including Whangarei, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hawke’s Bay, another Auckland season and more locations yet to be announced. An honest portrayal of the extreme power of love, The Wholehearted was developed through conversations with the local community, asking them to share their personal stories of affection and dedication. The result is a heartwarming devised theatre work that spans generations, genders and cultures. The Wholehearted explores what people do in the pursuit of love and how love changes us. In the authentic style Massive Company is renowned for, The Wholehearted weaves together stories of devotion
from the very young to the very old, as well as first crushes, Captain America and “mean moves” (Theatrescenes). A brilliant ensemble of actors devised this energetic and powerful new New Zealand play, under the expert co-direction of Massive Company’s artistic director Sam Scott and long-time company member Scotty Cotter. The ensemble comprises established actors Bree Peters (Shortland Street, The Weight of Elephants), Milo Cawthorne (Power Rangers, When We Go To War, Once on Chunuk Bair), Scotty Cotter (The Rehearsal, Awatea, Shortland St) and and Kura Forrester(Perplex, What We Do In the Shadows, Supercity) alongside rising stars Pat Tafa(Westside), Denyce Su’a (Get It Girl) and Villa Lemanu. The effervescent cast delivers a diversity of skills, personalities and perspectives. Massive Company’s Artistic Director, Sam Scott, says, “We make our shows for those who love to feel the impact of their theatre experience; who want meaning and connection through seeing stories that make them laugh and dream around their own lives. We make theatre for those who want less injury and more
beauty in the world. “In this tricky, topsy turvy world of ours, The Wholehearted is a great antidote. This show is transformative and fills its audiences with joy and hope about living.” For 26 years, Massive Company, one of New Zealand’s most innovative professional theatre companies, has uncovered hundreds of stories from the community and developed them into powerful theatre works full of vigour and heart. Massive Company unites young and emerging theatre artists with established practitioners, giving newcomers time and space to flex their creative muscle through devising, performing and directing. The work they produce is distinctly Kiwi, genuine and contemporary.

Form and perception Zoe Hoeberigs Manager Curator Malcolm Smith Gallery This August we have new works by Reece King on display at Malcolm Smith Gallery. Reece King is an Auckland-based painter whose works explore form and perception. His practice centres on a consideration of nature and using this as a beginning to develop meaning through colour and visual principles. His works are complex and dense. The exhibition, Heavy Reserve, also features a suite of drawings that show his relentless experimentation with composition and line. Alongside Heavy Reserve, we have several ethereal weavings by Christopher Duncan in Uxbridge Showcase. Duncan, who owns the fantastic TUR Studio, is a fibre-based artist specialising in intricate and delicate textiles. His work complements King’s with its focus on composition and line, however the soft palette he employs adds an intriguing contrast to Heavy Reserve.
by painter Russell Hollings, An Artist’s Journey. It was two of Hollings’ abstract paintings that stood out first to the new gallery owners revealing to them an artist with a wonderful understanding of colour and tone. Hollings’ abstracts feel subtle and considered yet are the most difficult for him to produce. Each piece takes months. Hollings relies mostly on memory and describes them as “resembling a battlefield during their creation”. An Artist’s Journey is Hollings’ 38th solo show, for which he does limit himself to only abstract works but will showcase his extensive experimentation across his four main styles of painting - landscape, plein air, abstract and still life. Hollings is always striving to create pieces with a lasting resonance, “translating a subject into paint is challenging and often mysterious, and with 50 years’ experience it doesn’t get any easier”.

Supporters stand firm behind Hornets By Alex Braae
F
rom the hill overlooking the rugby league fields at Paparoa Park, The Firm are making their presence heard. The Firm - a tongue in cheek reference to gangs of English football hooligans - began over a Sunday barbecue as a loose supporters group for the Howick Hornets Rugby League Club. It has since become a driving force off the park. Members help out with fundraising for the junior teams at the club, and have enjoyed watching the most successful Hornets season across the grades since 2011. They have some of the best seats in the house at Paparoa Park, parking up plastic chairs high on the hill around the half way mark. Member Dave Evans says despite the sometimes salty language that comes out of their section, the atmosphere they create is positive. “You’ve got to have a crowd, and you want it to be an interesting crowd, but it’s still a family crowd as well.” Howick has traditionally been a stronghold of rugby union, and the Hornets have at times struggled for money, sup-

porters and players. Junior Club Captain Denie Allen says in recent years The Firm’s sponsorship has contributed to wet weather gear for junior coaches and managers across the club, warm clothing for junior players and formal attire for representative teams. Allen described the contribution as “just a whole lot of stuff.” “We had a big working bee over Christmas, and The Firm offered to pay to put up scaffolding and stuff like that.” “To be fair it’s also about trying to get a bit of buzz around the club. It’s trying to get people down and involved in the club.” added Evans.

The growth of The Firm has coincided with a strong season on the field for Hornets teams across the grades. Under 13 and Under 15 level teams made Grand Finals, the Under 20s placed 2nd on their open weight grade ladder, and the Premiers and Reserves are secure in the top four of their respective divisions. The Premiers are guaranteed a place in the playoffs, and will be hoping to win their first SAS Fox Memorial trophy since 2011. To do so, they will need to overcome the table-topping Pt Chev Pirates, who stopped the Hornets with a ruthless 32-16 victory on Saturday.

When the Pakuranga Athletic Club, commences its new season on October 18th it will be 50 years, since its first athletic meeting was held. In 1967 a group of parents, with children attending Riverina School, felt the need for an athletic club in the rapidly expanding suburb. Help was sort from the Howick Jaycees who organised a letterbox drop, calling for a public meeting to be held. At this meeting attended by 40 members of the public, the Pakuranga Athletic Club was formed and a committee elected. The first meetings were held at Ti Rakau Park and over the next 13 years the club went from strength to strength. During the 1970s officials were catering for 600 children on club nights. In 1980 the club moved up the highway to the newly formed athletic oval on the developing Lloyd Elsmore Park. A Harrier Section was formed in 1977 and a Joggers Section 1982. Clubrooms were opened in 1984, after extensive fundraising and help from council, under the shared responsibil-

preparation can make all the difference; after all, many of those requests for assistance were for simple mechanical or electrical issues. Has the boat been serviced with extra attention being paid to batteries, the electrics and ensuring the fuel isn’t stale or contaminated? Perhaps it’s also time for the crew to have a freshen up too? Every boat should have at least two crew with basic boating knowledge and the ability to call for assistance if required. Coastguard’s Day Skipper and Maritime VHF Radio Operator courses are ideal for equipping you with the skills to enjoy your boating safely. In addition, a significant number of calls from boats could be avoided if the skipper had a little more mechanical knowledge. The Coastguard Engine Operator courses focus on correct operation, user maintenance and basic trouble shooting of common inboard or outboard engines. The knowledge gained helps skippers look after their investment, and have some steps to follow if they experience engine issues. By getting your boat and your skills sorted now, you can enjoy stress-free boating as we come into summer.

New club coach Aaron Hicks will soon be running a community tennis programme for 6 weeks at Howick Primary and Mellons Bay Primary School which is the result of Local Board funding received for this purpose. Club Open Day is on August 27, 1.30pm-3.30pm with heaps of oncourt activities organised by club coach Aaron Hicks for all those who would like to give tennis a go this summer season. nce again during the last year the Howick Tennis Club midweek ladies have excelled and held another fundraising tournament with the $4750 proceeds being donated to Totara Hospice. Together with neighbouring clubs over the past 22 years, more than $80,000 has been raised for the Hospice. While not a lot of tennis was played on the day of the tournament due to the bad weather conditions, those present opened their wallets and contributed generously to this very worthwhile charity. At the recent Tennis Auckland Awards Evening the midweek section won the Rae Reynolds Trophy for best interclub results for the season, involving the pre

ith a nick-name ‘Razor’ it is little wonder that breakdancing Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has a happy knack of surviving close shaves. And so it was in Sunday’s emotionally-charged Super Rugby Ellis Park final against the Lions before 62,000 frenzied Johannesburg fans who believed their team could add the Crusaders’scalp to that of the Hurricanes. That they came so close after Kwagga Smith was red-carded in the 38th minute for tackling David Havili in the air said much for their quality. But it also spoke volumes for the character of the Crusaders who won their eighth Super crown and first since 2008. They are also the only team to have won a final on foreign soil and have done it twice. It was magnificent defence that ensured success in a hard-fought 25-17 victory. And in Sam Whitelock, Kieran Read, Matt Todd, Ryan Crotty and Israel Dagg, they have a group of quality leaders who know how to handle a crisis in the heat of battle. Renowned for his lineout work, Whitelock’s tackle count rivalled that of Todd and All Blacks skipper Read and his captaincy has been outstanding since taking over the Crusaders role from the

latter. Fittingly, second-five Crotty was named man of the match for another faultless performance sandwiched between highly promising Richie Mo’unga and Jack Goodhew, who look set to serve the side with distinction for many years. Dagg was once again outstanding in fielding long-range kicks and replying with interest. And strong-running fellow wing Seta Tamanivalu took his chance well to score the first try before Good-
hew and Read added the others. Assisted by Leon MacDonald, Jason Ryan and Brad Mooar, Robertson and his fellow coaches have provided the Crusaders with a better balanced all round game to achieve a title that eluded previous chief mentor Todd Blackadder. Having been the only team to beat the Crusaders in this year’s Super championship, the high scoring Hurricanes can hold their heads high too. With midfielders Ngani Lau-

mape and Vince Aso combining to score 29 tries this season, the Hurricanes have superior strike power. But they don’t have the same cool-headed leadership group or disciplined defence under intense pressure. However with the Chiefs and Highlanders also enjoying some magic moments and the Blues improving before their disastrous humiliation against the Sunwolves, the future looks bright. However beware of a Springboks test team if they can provide
much of the brilliance and steel that has been the hallmark of the Johan Ackermann-coached Lions. Meanwhile, the country can bask in the glory of Tom Walsh’s shot put triumph in emulating the feats of discus thrower Beatrice Faumuina (1997) and shot put star Valerie Adams (2007-911-13) in winning world athletics titles. A likeable 25-year-old Timaru builder who had previously won a world indoor crown and claimed a third placed bronze medal at the 2015 Rio Olympics, Walsh was amazingly consistent. It was sad to see popular superstar Jamaican sprinter Usain Boult bow out of athletics with a third placed bronze in the 100m and wonderful to see 5000 and 10,000m Olympic gold medallist friend Mo Farrah finish a champion on track before he sets his sights on the marathon. Both have enriched the sport with spectacular deeds which have won them international acclaim and enthralled fans. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
