Daylight robbery By JIM BIRCHALL
A
brazen daylight robbery, the second similar incident in the past month, occurred at Meadowlands on Saturday. According to a witness who did not want to be named, up to five Caucasian teenagers, four male and a female, approached a middle aged man in the vicinity of Countdown inside the mall. The man was carrying a bag containing his wallet, along with
groceries and cigarettes he had recently purchased, when it was snatched. The offenders fled into the car park where, what the informant believes to be two male Polynesian accomplices were waiting in a silver 3 Series BMW, leaving the scene a short time later. Another male involved in the incident was seen re-entering the mall’s foyer to collect the female suspect. The witness believes the offenders may be the same teenagers
reported to be involved in violence and intimidation-related crimes throughout the eastern area. The person believes the group is organised and was targeting people who had recently used the ASB ATM adjacent to Countdown, however this is purely speculation at this stage. Sergeant Tim Riley, acting response manager, Counties Manukau East Police, confirmed officers had attended an incident in Somerville at 5.20pm on Saturday November 9. Police were called fol-
lowing a report of a theft at Meadowlands Shopping Centre. The victim was approached by a group of people, described as teenagers. The group spoke with the victim before grabbing a shopping bag, containing a wallet, before fleeing to a nearby vehicle. “Police were called soon after and responded to the location,” he said. “A number of area enquiries were also conducted. Our investigation is still ongoing into this incident and

at this stage no arrests have been made.” Howick Local board member Bo Burns witnessed an incident with similarities to Saturday’s on October 28, where an Asian woman’s bag was snatched by some young offenders. The St Mark’s Catholic School principal admits she still gets a little teary-eyed when she reflects on her decision to retire after leading the school for 17 years. “Though I won’t miss the 15 hour work days and the massive responsibility of having a vision and making so many decisions a day, I will miss the relationships I share with all the stakeholders including the students, staff, teachers, board of trustees, Parent Teacher Association and the community.” She says a principal could make up to 60 decisions a day. “That would include two to three major decisions a day,” says Rivers. She believes the school is in a very good place after four to five years of consecutive outstanding Education Review Office reviews and top Catholic Special Character Reviews “After 17 years it’s time to step down and hand over responsibility and the privilege to another. I think it is the right time for the school and me, both professionally and personally as our school has continued to flourish whether it is in the academic field, cultural, arts or sports.” A former chairperson of the Howick Pakuranga Principals’ Association, as well as chairperson of the Auckland Catholic Primary Principal Association, the award-winning principal says that every principal faces a burn out in 20 years. She admits to having a conflict of emotions. “Sometimes I get all welled up and think I could have another two to three years in me. “We have a lifestyle block in Whitford and

New app rises in east E
ast Auckland has its own app. Created to open up all that is on offer on this side of the Panmure Bridge, the free app can be downloaded to either Android or Apple devices, it is designed to give users instant access to everything from things to do and where to spend your leisure time to what’s going on in the region and local news. The East Auckland app, developed by locally-owned company Times Media, provides a compass in a sea of metadata which simplifies access to contact details and information relevant to visitors and locals, irrespective of age. It provides ready access to just about anything you might want to know or find under easyto-navigate icons with a plethora of touch screen points, For example, under Amenities, the app provides information for banks, childcare facilities,, drycleaners, petrol stations, laundromats, libraries, parks, police, retirement, retirement villages, schools, places of worship and even public loos. Users will find address details and, where applicable, an instant map pinpointing the location of the amenity or business or group. Some of those listed who have
chosen to expand their offerings have additional information and images as well as direct contact details. Times Media’s managing director Reay Neben says the East Auckland app is an innovation made to make busy lives a little simpler not only for visitors but those who live, work, eat, play and are active in the Howick, Pakuranga, Bucklands Beach, Botany, Ormiston, East Tamaki, Whitford, Clevedon and Beachlands, Maraetai areas. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re a busy mum, a couple looking for a place to eat or stay, or a family wanting to know what’s happening this weekend, the app’s appeal is that it can give you a really simple springboard to everything in our wonderful communities,” she said. “It features everything that’s happening in our community right down to the news in this area. Just download it and have a look and a play with it. “There’s everything there and, if there’s not, please let us know. The app is live now and we’re having a tremendous response. “It’s easy to download. If I can do it, anyone can. This app will appeal to all ages.”
Needles, wig found in park A resident stumbled upon a bag containing needles, a wig, condoms and mail addressed to several different people, when walking a dog on a usual morning excursion in Orangewood Park, Howick, on Tuesday (November 12). The person contacted his wife, who shared the photos on a local social media page. She is concerned about kids being exposed to the needles, a scenario she describes as “a parent’s worst nightmare”. The bag was found in close proximity to an area where a school walking bus starts off on its journey in the mornings. In the past she has noticed empty beer bottles and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) canisters strewn across the park. The bag was handed into Ormiston police.

Aroha Funerals: care and love at time of grief ADVERTORIAL CP2988A
State of Grace East has changed its name and is now called Aroha Funerals It is still being run from the same lovely cottage on the Ellerslie-Panmure Highway with the same group of warm, compassionate women that are committed to ensuring families are supported and listened to during this time. The name Aroha came from owner Janet Mikkelsen who used to work on the palliative care team at Starship Hospital. The team there had an end of life document that they would work through with families to help with decision making for their child. It is called Te Wa Aroha which translates to ‘A time of love’. Janet felt that phrase also embodies the work she and her team do as funeral directors. They support people to make decisions and care for their family member in a way that acknowledges the love that has been shared through their lives. One of the new funeral directors – Morgan – lost her mother to breast cancer 2 years ago. The mosaic heart which is part of the logo was from the memorial candle they had made for her mother, and represents many things – a life of many parts, the myriad of relationships people have over a lifetime, a heart that is shattered by a loss of someone, a piece of your heart always remaining true to someone – people will take different meanings from it. At Aroha Funerals the staff believe that death and dying are hugely significant times in our loves. While death
From left: Rachel Nash, Lynda Casey, Robyn Watson, Janet Mikkelsen, Morgan Smith and Gillian Craig. is a natural part of life, it can still be a difficult and emotional time for those experiencing it. Saying a final goodbye can be of the hardest things to do. They believe it is important to honour and celebrate
someone’s life but also to remember that in amongst the celebration, there is sadness and grief. They feel privileged to work alongside families at this important time, and to help them ‘tailor make’ a funeral or

farewell, to suit both the loved one who has died and the people who are living. They are committed to making the process as natural and gentle as possible and will help to create an occasion to say goodbye, in a way that is unique,
individual and heartfelt. They offer a range of services and options to help families and know that no single approach is right for every family. A funeral is unlike any other event; it must encapsulate so much, in such a short period of time and still reflect who the person was in life. An important aspect of this work for the staff at Aroha Funerals is their commitment to eco-friendly practices. Like many of us, they are part of the movement to be more aware of our finite resources and to find ways to minimise our negative impact on the environment. They have many caskets that are made of NZ sustainable produced pine, they drive an electric care, use local florists, caterers and crematoriums and generally do not embalm people – using cooling methods instead. They welcome visits and phone calls from people wishing to know more about funerals or to make plans. Knowing about the options available, writing down some ideas, and meeting the staff can all help put minds at rest. Reducing stress at a difficult time is what the staff aim to do. Game on: a virtually exciting reality In a classroom of Rive Block in Pakuranga College, exciting things are happening. The creation of software for virtual reality gaming has gripped the imagination of students at Pakuranga College. A VR game created by Yuewei Zhang, recently won the Year 13 student $1000 at the Media Design School Bright Awards, with an additional $3000 in prize money going to the College. Organised by New Zealand’s most awarded tertiary digital design institute, the awards recognise the creative talent of high school students from across the country in a range of disciplines, including graphic design, animation, photography and game development. This year Pakuranga College entered the Game category and took home all three awards in this group resulting in it being named the Bright Awards ‘School of the Year’. Vicky Tasker, content and communications manager at Media Design School commented: “Pakuranga College should be enormously proud – we were blown away by the calibre of work (and their utter domination of the Games category) It is a really amazing reflection on the school.” As winner Zhang prepares to move on to start an engineering degree, his position as king of the school’s Game Development Club will be hotly contested by a number of younger students, most of whom took home highly

The $3000 prize money will be invested in upgrading the college’s virtual reality equipment to ensure the best possible opportunities for the creative minds of the future.

isher & Paykel Healthcare recently celebrated its 50th anniversary by hosting an event for 2500 employees at their facility in East Tamaki. Teams from Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands and the Philippines provided lively and colourful musical entertainment, along with employee performers selected for the company’s international talent showcase. Awards were given for long service, upholding the company values, continuous improvement and reducing the environmental impact of the business. Comedian and actor Pio Terei served as the master of ceremonies. “This event is about celebrating our people and recognising their hard work and commitment to our success,” said Lewis Gradon, CEO of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare. “We’ve grown into a globally trusted brand and our products are now used by more than 14 million patients each year,” he said.
Originally founded in 1969 as a division of Fisher & Paykel Industries, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare was built on a vision to emulate the body’s natural humidification processes. The company’s first humidifier originated from a prototype made from a modest fruit preserving jar. “Today, we still have a growth mindset. We seek out the world’s best experts and learn about world-class practices, but then we go above and beyond to do something different, something better. We’re looking ahead beyond 50 and how we can improve care and outcomes for millions more patients over the next 50 years and more,” said Mr Gradon. The healthcare division of Fisher & Paykel Industries was separated in 2001 and listed on the New Zealand stock exchange. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare has around 4800 employees and its products are sold in more than 120 countries.

DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT ADVERTORIAL JH15477A
Spoilt for choice with new menu My significant other and I were looking for an intimate, but casual, seaside setting to have dinner and celebrate our anniversary. We had heard good things about the new menu on offer at Half Moon bay favourite, Grangers. As the evening sun started to melt away we were shown to our marina-side table, and met with an effusive welcome from a charming waitress, who took our drink orders from the wide-selection of beers on tap and pointed out the new seating which provided unobstructed views over the emerald water. The menu had us spoilt for choice. It was adorned with fresh seafood, and three different cuts of steak. A pleasant maitre’d informed us of the perfect accompaniment to seafood was the Squealing Pig rose’. After some thought, I ended up going for the garlic prawns, and was not disappointed. My partner (who is vegetarian) opted for the goat’s cheese filo, filled with a divine tomato & olive tapenade. A pleasant northerly wind draped over the bay, and before long, it was time for the evening’s main event. I ordered the 21 day aged rib eye, which was cooked to absolute perfection. My date was bowled over by the visual symphony of the Buddha bowl, which contained a parade of crispy tofu, roasted beetroot, spiced butternut, and quinoa, lightly drizzled with the aptly-named green goddess dressing. From the brief opening ‘on-stage performance’ to the denoument at the end, we are hooked straight away with hilarity and danger in equal measure as famed Sherlock Holmes actor William Gillette hosts some fellow actors at his isolated home for a weekend of fun and games, which don’t turn out quite as expected. After one of his guests is stabbed to death, Gillette assumes the persona of his beloved detective to solve the crime. Right to the last seconds of the play we are confused, delighted and eventually surprised! When the lights come up on William’s elegant Connecticut home, we are treated to an astonishing set, superbly designed with period detail by David Gifford and his talented team, including decor by Laurie Mills, subtle lighting by Hanneke Beets, and Michael Sharp’s highly evocative sound, providing the perfect 1936 scenario for this award-winning comedy thriller by American playwright Ken Ludwig. Staging effects and fine acting from every one of his actors combine to create a brilliant theatrical experience. The whole process helps develop the discipline needed to achieve goals and helps build selfconfidence and the ability to work in a team. These days, one of the big challenges budding guitarists face is simply the overwhelming amount of information available online, and the resulting lack of structure. “Many students are bought a guitar as a present only for it to sit in the corner gathering dust. Taking the first step and having proper lessons (as opposed to online or

YouTube!) is the key to understanding how powerful playing a guitar can be.” “The good news is that it’s not rocket science – yes, there are challenges on the way, and not everyone is going to be the next Jimi Hendrix, but I firmly believe that anyone can develop the skills to play guitar well. It just takes the right teaching, persistence and following the advice given.” With its friendly, supportive atmosphere, experienced teachers and an unparalleled range of opportunities for students to apply what they’re learning, Auckland Guitar School is able to provide a unique experience for Howick guitarists from its Picton Street teaching studio. n Visit the school’s website www. aucklandguitarschool.co.nz, or call on 09 533 5246 to book a free intro session and find out how to transform your guitar playing!

One of the beautiful things about playing the guitar is developing a lifelong skill that is fun, challenging and deeply rewarding. There’s always something new to learn, there are always more skills you can add to your playing and as you get older, it’s a great way to keep your brain active. Auckland Guitar School owner Dylan Kay explains: “You can take a guitar anywhere – to the beach, to play with friends… The social aspect of sharing music with friends and family is huge – we have many families involved in lessons here, and often it’s because a kid starts, and the parent sees how much fun it is and wants to join in!” For kids, the research is very clear – guitarists do better in school. Playing guitar improves maths skills, co-ordination and multi-level thinking.

Blue Edge the key to improvement H
owick College recently celebrated another graduation of 11 students from its Blue Edge programme. Blue Edge is a programme run in collaboration with the NZ Police, Howick College, One More Rep Fitness and Young Life Trust. The programme was initiated at the college under the leadership of Eric Wall, deputy principal and Lyall Carter, Howick College’s Youth Worker, at the start of Term 2. Mr Wall acknowledged that they had a gap in their school pastoral programmes that did not meet the needs of some of its students. The college has always had a close working relationship with the police and the employment of Mr Carter was the catalyst they needed to successful engage these students. Six months on, they have successfully graduated 35 students from the programme. The programme focuses on developing each identified student’s personal

Fresh leadership for east Auckland Last Monday two important meetings took place in east Auckland that will affect the leadership of our community. The Botany National Party met and selected Christopher Luxon as the new National Party Candidate for the Botany Electorate, and the Howick Local Board met for the first time since the 2019 Local Body elections and elected Adele White as the new chair of the Howick Local Board. Both of these selections are very important for the east Auckland community and bring fresh leadership to our community. Christopher Luxon is an exceptional candidate for the Botany Electorate. Christopher has had a very successful business career and has now set his sights on what he can do to make a difference for the people of Botany and New Zealand. His experience will be invaluable in our caucus and in Parliament and Botany will be well-represented by Christopher if they elect him as their next MP. As the neighbouring MP to Botany, I am excited to be supporting Christopher as he seeks to be their next representative in Parliament and I am looking forward to working alongside him and advocating on the issues that
MP for Pakuranga
Simeon Brown matter to east Aucklanders, such as transport, housing and law and order. I am also looking forward to working alongside Adele White as the new Howick Local Board chair; and the entire Howick Local Board. Adele is well-known and respected for the work she has done in east Auckland as a police officer, marriage celebrant, antenatal pregnancy trainer and, of course, as a local body politician. I also want to thank outgoing Local Board chair David Collings for the dedication and hard work he has put into the Howick Local Board area during his time as chair. David has made a huge contribution to east Auckland and I know he will continue to do so as a returning member of the board. East Auckland is a growing part of Auckland with many challenges and opportunities, and I know that by working together between central government and local government we will be able to tackle these challenges and ensure the best outcomes for our community.

Toastmasters talk way into record books N
ational Toastmasters organisation which included members from the Howick, Pakuranga, and Elim chapter recently attained a Guinness World Record. 171 Toastmasters gave 381 speeches one after the other, for 127 hours 31 minutes 43 seconds, this was attained by a nonstop effort over a week of 24 hour days of speaking. Some people spoke for 5 minutes and others spoke for over an hour. Local representation came from Deborah Gleiser, Greg Longstaff, and Mari Finn of Howick TM Club, Christine Alcott and Alun Chisholm of Pakuranga TM Club, and Greg Barnes and Kulesh De Silva of Elim TM Club. Alun Chisholm put in a massive effort to get the challenge over the line “I was there mostly at night 10pm through 6 am, maybe for 68 hours of the 127½” and added “living nearby was a help”.

Downsizing pays off for many seniors. While many retirees opt to remain in their own home as they age, others choose to downsize to an independent apartment, not only for the modern facilities and companionship on offer, but also because it broadens their financial options.
Local toastmasters were involved in the successful Guinness World Record attempt. Photo supplied
The event was a resounding success for Toastmasters and a showcase for an organisation who aim to help people improve their public speaking and gain confidence. Toastmasters come from all sections of society, from every country, whether they be students, lawyers, business owners, politicians, tradesmen and job seekers.
By the time they retire, many people have the bulk of their life savings tied up in their family home. By downsizing to a smaller (and less expensive) apartment, seniors have the opportunity to consider other investments to help fund their dayto-day living, or to add a decent chunk of money to their KiwiSaver fund. What’s more, larger, older homes often mean bigger bills for maintenance and repairs, whereas living in an independent apartment within a retirement village is maintenance free. Which means fewer unexpected bills – and no more problems finding and booking reputable tradespeople to fix a problem. Downsizing can also free up some cash to enjoy those ‘golden years’ – to travel, visit family, buy a new car, or enjoy outings And of course, a modern, low-maintenance
apartment frees up more time to ‘lock up and leave’ and enjoy life, instead of doing gardening and chores. “Freeing up finances is certainly one of the reasons seniors choose to move into our independent apartments,” says Bonnie Robinson, CEO of HBH Senior Living in Howick. “With no unexpected maintenance bills and modern, well insulated apartments, residents find it easier to budget.” “Some older people have lost a partner, or struggle with the costs and maintenance of a large family house – with no money left over to do anything else but sit at home,” she continues. “They move in to an apartment and suddenly, they’ve freed up their finances to enjoy life. In fact, 95% of our apartment residents wish they’d made the move earlier!”
Downsize your home. Upsize your lifestyle. HBH’s apartments offer the freedom of independent living, with help on hand if you need it. So why not make the move? Like our other residents, you may just love it.

The Rotary Club of Somerville event that featured a host of performances, a flash mob and the auction proved a great success. Okay, who wants some Christmas cake? T
he famous Lions Christmas Cake fundraiser is on again. Bucklands Beach Lions have taken possession of more than 200 Christmas Cakes which will be sold in the coming weeks. Roger Robinson, President of Bucklands Beach Lions, says the cake sales have run since 1971. “These cakes are still made to the much-loved original recipe and not sold anywhere else. he said. And that original recipe – the cakes are made with more than 50 per cent fruit – was developed by Ernest Adams especially for the Lions fundraiser.

New Treatment for Men The P ShotŽ (Priapus Shot) is a new treatment designed to deliver lasting improvements in sexual function in both healthy men and in those who have reduced activity due to: • Aging • Erectile dysfunction • Diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and blood vessel disease • Injury to the penis, spinal cord or lower back • Prostate, testicular, bladder, bowel cancer, surgery, chemo or radiation therapy • Medicine side effects The P ShotŽ uses the patient’s own blood platelets to activate growth factors that can improve penile function.

The packaging has been freshened up but nothing else has changed. Millions of dollars have been raised over the years – and it has all gone back to the clubs and into the com-
munity projects they support. Roger says they hope to raise over $800 from the cake sales which will go into the Bucklands Beach fundraising pool which last year exceeded
$15,000 for distribution to many groups and causes in the local community. These included local schools for annual prizegiving awards, supporting KidzFirst children’s hospital, providing prescription eyeglasses for young school children, helping to fund disabled children on the Spirit of Adventure and many others. In Lions, 100 per cent of the money raised from the public goes to support these community projects. ■■Want to help a great cause? Contact Roger on r.robinson@ xtra.co.nz for your Christmas cake.

Brownies in Half Moon Bay, led by volunteers sourced from the ranks of Brownies, Pippen’s and Guiding units have created a work of art that lightens up a vector transformer box located on Glenmore Road. Unit leader Louisa Cooper says the project is a “great example of teamwork within an organisation that has been helping girls and young women to follow their passions and learn independence, along with the opportunity to learn practical
skills for the outdoors, since 1928. The project was completed over two terms, with the help of sponsors such as Resene, Bunnings Botany and PSP Ltd in East Tamaki. The mural is made up of 72 panels that collate and seam into an image of an apple tree, making for an eye-catching addition to the east Auckland landscape. â– â– To get involved in Guiding as a volunteer or to enrol a child, visit girlguidingnz.org. nz

t is an exciting time for the nation’s most prestigious polo tournament, with the announcement of BMW as lead sponsor for the 43rd NZ Polo Open, to be held in Clevedon on Saturday February 22, 2020. The NZ Polo Open has earned its reputation as the sporting and social event of the summer, set in the picturesque Auckland Polo Club grounds, attracting big crowds and showcasing competitive polo at its best. “We are thrilled to have BMW as our lead sponsor,” says Lucy Ainsley, executive director of the BMW NZ Polo Open. “Our 2020 event is shaping up to be the best yet and our partnership with BMW will take the event to the next level, with more side-line action and extra glitz and glamour. It has been a fantastic few months planning. I can’t wait for everyone to see it come together in February.” The NZ Polo Open is a highlight on the global polo circuit for professional polo players and the calibre of sporting talent tak-
ing the field in February will be exceptional. Six teams will compete for the coveted trophy and along with NZ’s best, polo players will arrive from England, Argentina, Australia and South Africa especially for the tournament. Side-line highlights will be the much-anticipated BMW versus horse race and for those keen to dress to impress, entries are open for Fashion on the Field. The Ladies Veuve Clicquot magnum dash and the Men’s Rodd and Gunn dash will give the crowd a chance to compete on the field. The Flagship VIP Polo Lounge (320m2) is open to public sales for the first time and will offer a similar experience to England’s ‘Royal day at the polo.’ George FM will host the afterparty on the Chukka Lawn and for music fans attending Six60 there will be a bus from the polo grounds to Western Springs “The BMW NZ Polo Open offers spectators an exhilarating polo experience second to none and is the perfect place to

Go Bus drivers out on strike
G
o Bus drivers in Auckland took strike action yesterday as relations reached a new low with their employer. FIRST Union said it follows a week where the company cancelled regular wage bargaining and “arbitrarily suspended unionaffiliated drivers, rejected mediated bargaining and endangered the safety of striking workers”. Drivers from the East Tamaki (the depot is at 352 East Tamaki
Road) and Airport Go Bus depots withdrew their labour from 4am yesterday for 24 hours. “This follows weeks of nondisruptive protest that included free fares strikes, partial strikes and repeated attempts to negotiate with both Go Bus as the operator and Auckland Transport as the service provider. Go Bus have also (Tuesday) declined Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s offer to attend mediated
bargaining with drivers. FIRST Union said that bus drivers were left with no other option “after being met with total hostility by their employer and receiving no response after writing to Auckland Transport”. “These drivers tried peaceful strike action and were met with arbitrary suspensions that targeted union delegates and anyone else holding out for fair wage bargaining,” FIRST Union said.
“Both Go Bus and Auckland Transport have tried to pit drivers against the public, which is irresponsible and disingenuous - none of them have taken these actions lightly, and they care about their jobs and their passengers. “What they forget is that these drivers are the public, too - they’re low-waged workers fighting for a fair deal at work and regularly scheduled wage bargaining that doesn’t devolve into the zero-sum
game that Go Bus have tried to force during one-sided negotiations. Auckland Transport need to wake up and recognise that Go Bus are acting unlawfully and unethically – they’re funded to provide a proper service for the city but instead they’re undermining experienced drivers to keep wages low and pocketing the rest of it while their buses are under-maintained and their drivers are underpaid.” Go Bus was asked for comment.
An experience of a lifetime at Silicon Valley Sixteen Farm Cove Intermediate students have just returned from a trip to Silicone Valley. They were given personalised tours of Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Intel, Nuro, Ad Astra School and Apple as they travelled to Silicon Valley, San Francisco and Los Angeles, recently. Highlights of the trip included meeting Niki Caro, director of Whale Rider and the soon-to-be released, Mulan, and being inspired to be ‘imagineers’ at the Walt Disney Studios. The 10-day educational experience focused on business, innovation and technology (experience) named BITE. A key message students took away from the experience was to combine

Feedback Children’s hearing so important I wonder how many primary school teachers are aware of this deficiency which may exist in a child under their care. It occurs in a baby in the case of an awkward delivery in which damage (which is reparable) to the sensory nerve that lies between the receptive mechanism in the ear to the auditory reception and interpretation section of the brain. This results in the child only hearing the middle sections of a word in the classroom or, in other words, a garble of sound. To such a child the classroom becomes a war zone to them and typically will shut off although, in many other areas, they will behave like a normal child because their intelligence is no different from any other child. In the case I am aware of, from about the age of five through to eight, it is quite noticeable when in their presence they will emanate a persistent low hum in response to the communication around them which, to the uninitiated, can be very annoying but to those trained to recognise, it is nature’s warning signal. Under the care of a trained professional by a series of cranial manipulations and aural exercises, normal hearing can be restored that is if it is picked up early enough. The child I mentioned was lucky the age of eight was early enough for the APD (Auditory Processing Disorder) to be repaired and is attaining good grades in most subjects at secondary school but at a cost of $10,000 per annum for two years to a trained professional. My plea here is to early childhood primary school teachers to be aware of and know what you are looking for in such children under their care and if one suspects one might have an APD child, get help immediately. Statistically one in 20 children is thought to have APD.

Support our Kiwi banks
I read with interest the report on ‘How Kiwis are sending a $5 billion cheque to the Aussie banks every year’ and how ‘huge numbers of Kiwi customers don’t know who owns their bank’. Also a few paragraphs down was the glaring statement that ‘the government does most of its banking with ANZ even though it owns Kiwibank’. Stunning statements, all of them, as to the disinterest of Kiwis to the wellbeing of their own country with the government taking the lead. I used to be a customer with ASB, BNZ and Westpac. When ASB was sold to the Aussies, I was really disappointed. I then found out that the ASB in New Plymouth didn’t want to be part of the sale so not long after, I closed my account with the ASB and found a way to open one with the TSB when I was in New Plymouth. Not long after I closed all my bank accounts with the Australian banks, particularly after a couple of friends were made redundant by one such Aussie bank even though they were sending millions of profits made in NZ back to Australia.

Climate is changing naturally I agree with Gary Hollis (Times, Nov 7) that our summers seem to be getting shorter and colder and our winters seem colder and longer than usual. Like most people I initially accepted global warming which has now been changed to climate change. However, I decided to research it for myself. What concerns me most is the unhealthy paranoia adopted by today’s schoolchildren who are convinced the world will end next week.
Carbon dioxide: The earth’s history shows we have had 6 and 10 times more CO2 than we have today. None of the major climate changes in the last 1000 years can be explained by CO2. It cannot be said that carbon dioxide will drive climate – it certainly never did in the past. It is true that since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased but CO2 is 0.04 per cent of all the gases in the atmosphere and plants use CO2 for their growth and development which is a natural reducer of this gas. In contrast, volcanoes produce more CO2 each year than all the factories, cars and animals put together and there is always a volcano erupting somewhere in the world.
CO2 versus sunspots: If one looks at a graph of the earth’s temperature for 120 years since 1860 and then overlays a graph of sunspot activity, the graph lines coincide exactly. If you My hat off to the NZ banks I bank with – Co-Operative Bank, Heartland Bank, Kiwibank Bank and TSB Bank - for their courage and the wonderful, helpful staff in their banks. I’ve never felt so good knowing that they will not have to face blatant discrimination when it comes to their jobs as they are contributing to the success of this country. Also I make it my point to recommend the NZ banks, businesses and services to my friends, encouraging them to keep the profits in this country for their future generations.

Kate is wrong
Kate Hawkesby (NZ Herald, Nov 6) “pale, male and stale” political commentary demonstrates: ■■ No 1: The prejudice of ageism. Why characterise people in their later years as stale? This was tagged to male. Do we accept that if it were a female then she would be stale as well? What is stale? ■■ No 2: The prejudice of racism. The NZ population is majority pale i.e. white. Is it therefore not unusual that there are mostly white people in parliament? As well, possibly, other cultures take
look at CO2 levels overlaid over earth’s temperature for the same period, there is no correlation. The effect of sunspots has been clearly overlooked in this whole debate and there is currently a NASA rocket on this very mission. I would add to this that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is political and its conclusions are politically driven and does not have the stamp of authority of an international organisation. Climate change has become a great industry, soaking up much government funding and employing thousands of people around the world. Universities now offer courses in this topic and researchers use climate change as a reason to gain funding to study any topic that can be remotely related to climate change. In contrast to IPCC, satellites, weather balloons and ground stations all show cooling since 2001. The mild warming of 0.6 to 0.8 degrees celcius over the 20th Century is well within the natural variations recorded in the last millennium. My conclusion is that the world’s climate is changing but naturally and slowly and nothing man can do will alter that. However, we must stop polluting our planet with plastics and chemicals as much as we can but I do not see it as a reason to create such mass hysteria.
Celia Martin, Howick
more, or less, interest in politics and this affects the composition of the governing body. ■■ No 3: The prejudice of gender. If more men choose to enter politics because that is their interest – and women choose to enter other fields – then there will naturally be more men in politics and more women in their chosen fields e.g. more men choose to do engineering and more women choose to do medicine – both take the same amount of brains. As a consequence there are more men in engineering and more women graduates in medicine, nowadays. It is called freedom of choice – or liberty. I am surprised that the Human Rights Commission does not take more notice of such a clearly thrice-bigoted phrase – or is such open bigotry against a specific group (defined by age, gender and colour) perfectly acceptable these days? Are identity politics a rehabilitation of bigotry? I suggest we judge people on their character and actions not on skin colour, gender, age or other characteristics that we are all born with. Don’t reset the clock and social behaviours back to less tolerant and less opportune times.

Warriors loss Raiders gain R
ugby league fans will be wondering how Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad slipped through the NZ Warriors fingers, having been released by them in February after being confined to reserve grade in 2018. This season he scored 11 tries and averaged 160 running metres a game as a penetrating fullback for the Canberra Raiders on their way to the NRL Grand Final. Hence Kiwis coach Michael Maguire quickly slotted him into his national team and Nicoll-Klostad repaid the favour with strong games in the 12-8 and 23-8 triumphs against Great Britain. It wasn’t a particularly strong British side but Maguire deserves full credit for fielding a fit, powerful Kiwis combination that did the basics well and defended tenaciously. Having recalled veteran Benji Marshall, the proud Kiwi relished the captaincy and played smart footy. Having been dropped for the first game against Great Britain after a poor performance in 26-4 loss to Australia, Shaun Johnson redeemed himself in the second when he danced through the defence for a superb try. As hookers, Brandon Smith and Kodi Nikorima distributed the ball smartly from dummy half and led by rugged Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in the

absence of Jesse Bromwich, the forwards ran hard and straight. Renowned for his toughness and willingness to carry the ball in places angels fear to tread, Waerea-Hargreaves was also a major contributor to the Kiwis defence when the Brits threatened the try-line for long periods of their last game. Once again speedy Roger Tuivasa-Sheck made big metres with his powerful bursts from the back. However it is about time moves were introduced to put him through gaps that could produce tries rather than leave him to be a lone ranger.

Overall it is a promising team that will develop further if kept together. Ken Maumalo remains and outstanding left wing and Jamayne Isaako looks sharp on the right with the bonus of being a good goal-kicker. The double triumph against the Brits was a big improvement on the disappointing 26-6 June loss to the world champion Kangaroos. Meanwhile having avenged last year’s 28-22 World Cup quarter-final loss to Tonga after leading 20-16 at half time with a resounding 34-14 win this year, the Kiwis were no match for the Kangaroos.
However Tonga bounced back magnificently to beat the Aussies 16-12 before 25,275 red flag waving fans to remind all-comers they are a genuine force to be reckoned with. Brilliant captain Jason Taumalolo has led the comeback since leaving the Kiwis before the 2018 World Cup while Australian-born Andrew Fifita followed suit. Other New Zealanders to show their allegiance to Tonga through their parental heritage were David Fusitu’a, Konrad Hurrell, Michael Jennings, Tui Lolohea and Sio Siua Taukeiaho. Taumalolo and Fusitu’a in particular were a huge loss for the Kiwis. However they are a great aquisition to proud, boisterous Tongan fans who are the best and loudest league supporters on the planet. Recent results have shown that Fiji and Papua New Guinea have made huge strides forward too whereas Samoa have slipped backwards. Meanwhile Sonny Bill Williams has made the Six Million Dollar Man look cheap after accepting a two-year $10 million Canadian offer to play in the British league. At 34 and taking into account his long injury record, I reckon he’ll spend more time off the field than on it. ■■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

unnyhills School students have created a fun new hide and seek game that helps promote bee care. The students were excited to welcome beehives to their school recently. As a GreenGold Enviroschool, the beehives form part of their efforts to help create a sustainable future. “Did you know most of the plants we need for food rely on pollination by bees?” says Vera Akitson, a year six student. With the bee populations declining, to promote bee care, such as not spraying pesticide, the year five and six students have created Bee Rocks. They’ll be hiding the small stones, painted like bees and covered in messages about how to care for bees, in public spaces in a 3.2 kilometre radius around Sunnyhills School, in which their bees will fly. Why Stop Men Dying Too Young? • The state of men’s health is in crisis. • Gender is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of health. For men, this is not good news. This has received little national, regional or global acknowledgement or attention from health policy-makers or health care providers. • Too many men are “toughing it out,” keeping their problems to themselves and suffering in silence. It’s time to break that silence and stop men dying too young.

Baroque wedding cake Best in Show
Baha’is celebrate bicentenary
A
baroque-inspired wedding cake has won the Cake Art Competition at inaugural Pettinice Cake Show held in the Pakuranga United Rugby Club recently. Created by hobbyist cake decorator, Tracey Van Lent of Auckland, the cake features fine detailed painting on Pettinice fondant, sculpturing, and finishing with delicate, edible gilding. This is only the second time Van Lent has entered a major cake show competition; having done well in Australia last year inspired her to test her skills against some of the best decorators in New Zealand. “Last year I entered my first big cake competition (International Cake Show, Australia). I’d never even visited a cake
On October 29 and 30 the Baha’i faith all over the world celebrated the bicentenary of the birth of the Báb, (a title which literally translates to ‘Gate’– a gate to spiritual truth) whose prophetic message prepared the way for the coming of Bahá’u’lláh, founder of the Baha’i faith. His mission was to prepare the way for Bahá’u’lláh, who would usher in an age of unity, peace and justice. The Baha’i community of east Auckland marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Báb with devotion, a brief film and dinner at the Howick Club on Tuesday evening. Photo supplied
show before that! I came home with a first and second place. That was very validating but, more importantly, it was just the whole process of entering, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, being involved in the show and the demonstrations, meeting like-minded people and soaking up the whole cake show atmosphere that had a huge impact on me. I think I learnt more that weekend, through that experience, than I had in the entire previous year. “I’ve become a huge fan of cake shows since then, and was wishing there was something closer to home, so when I heard about the Pettinice one, I don’t think anyone could possibly have been more excited and enthused than me.”

Skipper Andrew Morrison joined Bill Walsh and the pair took the score up to 180, before Morrison was sent back to the pavilion for 66. Things didn’t get any better for University, as Walsh and Brian Barnard batted positively, putting on 113 runs, taking Howick Pakuranga into a first innings lead. Bill Walsh was dismissed for a chance less century which included 14 fours and a massive six over long on. The Alpacas batted on, finally declaring at 367/9. Barnard scored a swashbuckling 86 in 80 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes, with Danru Ferns 33* playing a nice cameo at the end. University played out time and was 60/0 at the close. The match ending in a draw. After HPCC secured first innings points. BBAFC bring home 2 cups B
ucklands Beach AFC (BBAFC) has had great success at the U19 Napier National Tournament with the men winning the Satellite final 4-0 over Stop Out of Wellington and the women’s team – in their first year there - clinching the plate final 2-1 over Palmerston North. BBAFC sent their U19s down to the U19 Napier Nationals over Labour Weekend. It was the fourth time that the BBAFC had sent a men’s team to compete in the Satellite competition and the first time for their women’s team. Both teams came home with trophies, capping off a very successful year for the club. This years men’s team was
coached by Men’s First Team head coach Rudy Mozr and Director of Football Sander Waterland. The first day saw them with wins over Stop Out 3-1, Seatoun 2-0 and a draw 1 -1 with Kapiti Coast. Second day and they won their first game 9-0 over Wainuiomata which finish top of their pool with a game in hand. They were able to rest key players and drew the last pool game 1-1 with Taradale. The quarter final had them in a tight tussle against local team Napier Marist. A single goal proved enough for victory. Semi-final was an early 8am kick-off against in form hosts Napier City Rovers, going on to win 2-1.
SERVICE DEAL CODE: BOTANY
This put them into the Satellite final playing on the main pitch at Napier City against Stop Out. Stop Out were tired having had to go into extra time in their semi-final win. BBAFC were able to put away a couple of quick goals and go onto win the final 4-0. It was a great team effort with all players contributing to an outstanding result for the club. Special mention to Thomas Golding who won the Golden Boot for the tournament scoring 8 goals in 8 games, including a hat-trick in the final. The women’s team was coached by Charlie Hunn and entered the unknown of tournament football. Their first game saw them go down 1-0 to
last year’s champions Hamilton Wanderers. A very respectful result. They then drew 1-1 with Petone and a highlight was a 1-0 win over Ellerslie who fielded a couple of New Zealand representatives. A 2-0 win over Kapiti Coast put them into the Plate final against Palmerston North which they went on to win 2-1. An exceptional showing by the girls with an average age of only 16-and-a-half. This holds BBAFC in good condition for next year as their Women’s First Team will play in the AFF/NFF Conference competition for the first time having gained promotion this season having won Women’s AFF Div 1.

fter starting on the front row for the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Altima Andre Heimgartner has shared with Bryce Fullwood across the PIRTEK Enduro Cup was brought home in eighth position after 500km of tough racing on Sunday. While an undeniably strong result for the Melbourne-based driver from Dannemora and his co-driver, the top eight finishing position does not tell the full story of the speed and potential shown by the #7 and its drivers across the weekend. That potential was clearly on-show during Saturday’s proceedings, with the pair impressing during the qualifying races. Heimgartner first qualified the car for the co-drivers race in P3. Fullwood then brought the #7 home in third in that race before Heimgartner would finish the main drivers qualifying race in P2 – a Supercars career-best result for the 24-year-old which also secured the front-row starting position on the grid for Sunday’s big race. “We had some fantastic car speed in the #7 this weekend. It was great on Saturday to secure second – my best

Supercars result so far – in the main drivers qualifying race and with it, lock down a front row grid spot for the Sandown 500,” Heimgartner explained. Fullwood was the starting driver for Sunday’s Sandown 500 and in a strong display retained second on the road until the first round of pit stops, where he unfortunately incurred a 15 second time penalty for speeding in pit lane. Fullwood continued on in the car after the first stop before returning to the lane from sixth position on lap 56
to hand over to Heimgartner, who was forced to wait out the 15 second penalty before being able to re-join the field in 20th position. Heimgartner quickly went to work to move his way up the field to eventually bring home a top eight result. “Things were looking really strong early on Sunday, but unfortunately a mistake in the pit lane saw us served with a 15 second time penalty which really knocked us around. “We weren’t going to give up though, we pushed through and did all we could
to salvage a top eight result which was very rewarding at one of the biggest events of the year. Heimgartner and Kelly Racing will next be on-track with the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 across November 22-24. Before they head to New South Wales for that season-ending event however, they will travel to South Australia’s The Bend Motorsport Park for the final round of the TCR Australia Championship – held as part of the Shannons Nationals – across November 15-17.

Church got on the scoresheet, touching down on the left-hand flank after an impressive pace-filled gallop more reminiscent of a winger than an openside. The future is bright for the 17-year old, who is in his last year of school. TheTimes caught up with Cam and asked him what his plans are after he finishes? “I am starting a building apprenticeship next, while training in the Auckland academy before and after work,” says Cam. Church has aligned himself with the University Club and has been part of the Blues under 18 academy programme this year and is “eyeing selection for the under 20 side next season”. His list of favourite players includes fellow loose forward Ardie Savea, halfback TJ Perenara, “and of course, Richie McCaw”. Here’s hoping Cam can emulate the achievements of New Zealand’s most capped player and revered captain. He is certainly one to watch.
