Should English be official? By JIM BIRCHALL
H
owick local Gayleen Mackereth has started a petition to make English one of the three official languages of New Zealand. Most people are probably under the impression that English is an official language, due to it being the official language of this county until it was removed in 1987, when Maori became an official language. English has remained a de-facto official language since then. It is accepted as such within legalese.
NZ First MP Clayton McMillan was involved in a push to recognise English alongside Te Reo Maori and Sign Language. The bill is still under consideration. Gayleen argues: “While 96 per cent of the people speak or understand English, and the school system and all major communication in this country is in English, it seems strange that English is not an official language together with Sign Language and Maori” “English is a key to our economic survival and for many people, the
thing which connects us to other people throughout the world and attracts students and tourists to our shores.” “If English is not an official language, how can we ask new immigrants to reach a certain level in a language which is not an official language? How can we accept a court judgment written in English if the official language is Maori/Sign Language?” “There has been grave concern for the loss of Maori language and over the last 30 years many steps

have been taken to rejuvenate the language There is a huge push for school students and others to learn Maori nowadays. This is echoed in official publications and on television. TVOne, in particular, begins and ends programmes in Maori and incorporates extra words in Maori during the broadcast. Many official publications now use Maori words as headings and use Maori in the main text un-translated,” Gayleen says. “Regularly, these words are not italicised to distinguish them as
belonging to another language, but left in standard text, unlike Japanese which uses a different alphabet for loanwords, or earlier publications by British authors where French words were often incorporated but in italics to distinguish them from English in the text. “This makes it particularly difficult for us trying to teach new immigrants what is and what is not in English and doubles the difficulty in resettling.” ■ What do you think? owick Brass is celebrating 60 years in the business. Band president Max Christiansen said Howick Brass has been an integral part of the community since 1959, starting out as the Howick Citizens Band through to Smiths Locksmiths Manukau City Brass in the 1990s and 2000s, up until the present day where the band has returned firmly to its roots as Howick Brass Inc. It was formed to serve the community 60 years ago by an enthusiastic group of local community volunteers. “The band has grown over the years to not only serve Howick but also the majority of the east and south Auckland regions, with our students, academy band and senior band members coming from Panmure, Glen Innes through Otara and as far south as Papakura,” said Max. The ensemble of around 35 musicians is now firmly established as a strong and well-recognised community initiative and continues to serve the Auckland/Manukau area from year to year at civic services, community concerts, various parades and other notable performances. Howick Brass Band performs at around 45 play-outs per year. The most notable include the popular Carols by Candlelight on Stockade Hill, carol services around the Howick area, and the How-

ick Anzac Day services. The band also works with local groups to add a diverse range of entertainment to community events. The band has had much success in developing strong and committed musicians. Younger members of the band have had the opportunity to participate in the National Youth Brass Band, New Zealand Secondary Schools Composite Band and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. More experienced members have even had the privilege of being selected for the National Band of New Zealand. In an effort to make the world of “brass-banding” more accessible to a younger audience, Howick Brass has recently launched an academy band programme which provides free group lessons to beginner and intermedi-
ate brass musicians, helping them learn and develop the art of brass playing. There are currently 10 - 15 members each week, with ages ranging from 6 to 15. “In addition to local community engagements, Howick Brass Band enjoys participating in the National Brass Band Championship each year,” said Max. “In recent years the band has had significant success at these events, winning 1st place in the C Grade at the 2018 contest in Blenheim and
2nd in the same grade at this year’s contest in Hamilton.” The band achieves similar results each year at the Auckland Bands Association district contest. As to reasons why members play in Howick Brass, Max said the most important one is that they love music and they love playing music. “You wouldn’t give up this much time in a week if you didn’t. We all come from different playing backgrounds. “We have some extremely good players in this band and we have some players who are still trying work on the basics but everyone is patient with each other (usually) and we all help each other out to give better performances.” There are many families involved with the band too. “A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of welcoming back a returning grandmother at rehearsal - three generations in one band,” said Max. “There is a sense of loyalty and camaraderie that you get with a sports team. It is generally a bad feeling you get

when you have to ring in sick or work late or you have to look after the kids that night. “Our lives have become increasingly busy and we all try to make this work for the good of the band. There is a sense of contributing something to the community not just at concerts but play-outs for Anzac Day and Carols by Candlelight are very important to the people in the band and to the people in Howick.” As to the future: “Our goal is working with the local Howick community towards developing local facilities as an art and cultural centre within a vibrant village atmosphere.” ■■ Rehearsals and learner classes take place at the band rooms weekly at the Howick Domain on Wednesday nights 7:30pm. he Christmas holidays are upon us but not everyone leaves Auckland. For those of us who choose to spend most of our time at home, between sharing food with the family and catching up with rest, some of us will get out and about with friends or family, even for a few hours. That’s where the East Auckland app will be helpful. Created to open up all that is on offer on this side of the Panmure Bridge, the free app can be downloaded to either Android or Apple devices. It is designed to give users instant access to everything from things to do and where to spend your leisure time to what’s going on in the region and local news. The East Auckland app, developed by locally-owned company Times Media, has had a great response so far with downloads growing exponentally. The app provides a compass in a sea of metadata which simplifies access to contact details and information relevant to visitors and locals, irrespective of age. It provides ready access to just about anything you might want to know or find under easy-tonavigate icons with a plethora of touch screen points, Users will find address details and, where applicable, an instant map pinpointing the location of

Geof Roberts has always been interested in Jaguars and this March he will be bringing three splendid examples to the annual Brit & Euro Classic Car Show at Lloyd Elsmore Park. The Times asked what got Geof initially interested in Jaguars? “I have always liked cars, but in particular the Jaguar XK 120 (produced in the early 1950s) and the Mark 7.” Geof’s favourite he has owned is the 1987 V12 X J S, and counts the series 4 (with a 2.8 litre motor and 3.6 litre gear box) as the first ‘bad’ buying mistake. Geof will be bringing along his wife’s 2019 Jaguar XJL, a 2013 Jaguar XF sport brake and a classic

Held on Sunday, March 1 at Lloyd Elsmore Park, from 10-3, this year’s non-competitive public event has already signed up 774 cars and 21 bikes for the 2020 show. With the number expected to climb and better last year’s turnout. “With plenty of food and a live broadcast from EAST FM it will be a memorable and highlight event for every age and culture.” Says organiser Richard Waugh ■■ Brit & Euro classic car show ■■ Sunday March 1, 2020 ■■ 10am-3pm ■■ Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga ■■ www.briteurocarshow.nz

Christmas lights to dim as Peter hangs up Santa hat By JIM BIRCHALL
P
eter Harding of Bucklands Beach, has been putting on a huge display of Christmas lights on his property for around 30 years. He also dresses up as Santa and throws lollies out to the kids who’ve come to see his display. Each year he stocks up with
a whopping 300 kilos of sweets, provided off his own back. This Christmas will be Peters’ last bringing goodwill to all. Now is the time for him to give it away due his advancing age and the scale of the job. The display and Peter’s generosity will be sadly missed by locals, as it has been a commu-
nity feature for so long and the origin of many happy Christmas memories. Meanwhile, Times photographer Wayne Martin captured a few more homes in the area which have decorated big-time for Christmas! Merry Christmas from the Times and have a safe and peaceful time.

Solar energy – warm to the idea! Howick shopping centre launches solar power initiative
The owner of a boutique shopping centre and a solar electricity innovator have developed a business model that overcomes obstacles for centres wishing to make better use of renewable energy. The initiative is believed to be the first of its kind in New Zealand for this type of centre. Broadway property group started talking with specialist solar supplier Solar Group NZ, about ways to make this possible. With this project they pioneered a new model especially designed for shopping and commercial centres called Solar Grid Share. With Solar grid share the owner invests in and installs the Solar system, essentially becoming an electricity supplier, providing electricity, via a single power meter, to all its tenants. The tenants themselves receive a better deal, and the Howick • 09 534 1619 Howick • 09 534 1619 knowledge that they are using kipmcgrath.co.nz/howick Howick 534 1619 Howick•• 09 09 534 1619

It’s a hugely positive investment in terms of our asset, and provides a better deal for our tenants.” Reducing carbon emissions is clearly a priority”, says Roy Netzer, managing director of Solar Group. It was amazing to see that within a couple of weeks all of the tenants in the Moore st building were onboard and Solar Grid Share was born.”

ne of the biggest challenges our community is facing is a lack of transport infrastructure and a clear and concrete vision being delivered. The Government’s announcement of $12 billion for new infrastructure should be welcomed, however considerable detail is still required. This year I’ve been working on delivering the new Botany to Airport Busway, which will run along Te Irirangi Drive. I’m working with the Transport Minister on this project and have made the argument that we need to see a Parkand-Ride facility in Botany as part of this busway and the Eastern Busway. The Minister has instructed his officials to investigate a Park-and-Ride as part of this work. This is an area where being an MP who sits in the middle of politics, with relationships on both sides of Parliament, means I can effectively work in the best interests of local projects. Another part of Botany’s infrastructure that needs an urgent upgrade is the Chapel Road Bridge. This unsafe crash hotspot was built more than 60 years

ago to rural standard but is in a rapidly growing urban environment. It’s near a number of schools, the premier Barry Curtis Park
and the Ormiston Town Centre under construction, and needs to be widened, straightened and have pedestrian and cycling facilities installed.
I’m pushing Mayor Phil Goff and Auckland Transport to carry out the necessary work to the bridge. A few days after the Government announced its $12b spend, the National Party released its own infrastructure policy document. I read all 56 pages and couldn’t find a single mention of any local projects for Botany. The long-running tradition of the two major political parties forgetting east Auckland will continue if there’s no loud advocate working for Botany and delivering on local issues. Every major party MP from Labour or National will always have to sit back and put their party first, ahead of local needs. The freedom to now speak up means I’ve been able to achieve more in the past year as an independent voice than I did in eight years as a National MP. Finally, I’d like to wish the people of Botany a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to continuing our ongoing conversation with Times readers about a wide range of subjects important to our community in 2020. Jami-Lee Ross, Botany MP

‘AT continues to ignore community’
F
ollowing the delivery of a petition calling on Auckland Transport (AT) to remove the T2 lane from Pakuranga Road, which was signed by more than 1500 locals, AT’s response leaves no doubt about their lack of interest for what the community thinks, says Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. “Since the T2 lane was installed on Pakuranga Road many months ago I have had hundreds of local residents who use the road on a daily basis come to me with their concerns, particularly around the potential for a bad accident to occur,” he said. A lot of the concern has been centered on the section of the lane between Cascades Road and Gossamer Drive, and the 50m allowance that has been provided for traffic turning left out of Cascades Road and traffic turning left into Gossamer Drive. Since the lane was first proposed, residents have tried to warn AT that the 50m allowance is not enough to mitigate the risks. “In their most recent
response, AT claims they are simply lining up the lane with the same rules applied around the city, but transport cannot be a one size fits all approach,” said Brown. “AT also claim that the lane has improved travel times for buses and multi-occupant vehicles without affecting single-occupant vehicles in general traffic but can only provide vague percentages to back this up. “Even then, their data shows the lane has made almost no impact either way, so I continue to wonder why it was needed in the first place.” The response also indicates that planning for the Reeves Road Flyover, which was delayed a few months ago, should be ready for consultation early next year. “I will keep a close eye on developments in this space to ensure AT delivers the project within the timeframe they have given,” he said. “I also recently raised concerns with AT about reports I had received from locals that the T2 lane was now being
monitored by cameras. AT confirmed they had begun a programme of monitoring the lane to ensure compliance but that, for now, they would only be warning noncompliant drivers.” They have however stated that formal enforcement will begin after a ‘grace period’. “This will ultimately be another revenue-gathering exercise for AT, who know how difficult it is for drivers on Pakuranga Road to comply with this lane particularly between Cascades and Gossamer,” Brown said. “This will ultimately make the lane less safe than it already is, as drivers will now be worrying about being ticketed outside of the 50m clearance.” “I remain unconvinced that AT has the best interests of our community at heart when it comes to their decision-making around transport issues, and I will continue to advocate for the solutions that Pakuranga needs to fix our longstanding traffic issues.” ➤➤AT responds, Page 27
Get snapping for Arts Out East project Arts Out East has announced its first project in 2020, which is led by film and digital photographer Brendan Kitto. He hopes to connect all generations through a nostalgic experience that uses both old and new practices and indoor and outdoor spaces. His project simply titled ‘Howick’, revisits his early years of growing up in the region as a millennial, shining light on the importance of history and documentation during a time of growth and redevelopment. It’s therefore most suited for Brendan to have reached out to Rices Mall owner and proud Howickian Wally Rice to house his film photography amongst the mall’s already existing history cabinets and notice boards. Brendan’s installation will not only compliment the space, it will also encourage the regulars and the new, to partake in an east Auckland bus stop exploration, to go into the draw to win an Instax Film Prize Pack.

t is hoped more Kiwis will be opting to include a colourful grazing platter packed with delicious fresh produce as their centrepiece for this year’s Christmas table. The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust general manager Paula Dudley says a growing number of people are committing to a plant-based diet or at least making a conscious effort to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year. “This is the perfect occasion to get creative with your Christmas table, as this time of year we have an amazing array of choices including sweet cherries, strawberries, ripe tomatoes, new potatoes, avocados, asparagus and fresh herbs. “You’ll be amazed by how much more energetic you feel by eating a platter like this at Christmas instead of less healthy options” says Dudley. Colour is the key to compiling an attractive
toasted pumpkin seeds and walnuts plus a wedge of lemon or lime to create an impressive festive display. Merry Christmas!
ABOUT 5+ A DAY Did you know that eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables has also been linked to an improved mood? spread, so opt for plenty of bright reds, yellows, greens and a splash of beetroot hummus that will really get your taste buds going. Cherries and strawberries are synonymous with Christmas given they’re in peak season. Strawberries are rich in antioxidants and are a good source of vitamin C, manganese, folate and potassium. Avocados are one of only a few fruit which contain fat. This healthy monounsaturated fat helps to lower blood cholesterol and increase satiety, so you’ll be less tempted to go back for
second (or third) helpings on Christmas Day. Asparagus will provide your daily dose of folate while new season potatoes are a must-have with any festive meal. They’re high in fibre and a terrific source of vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin C, niacin and pantothenic acid. “Did you know that eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables has also been linked to an improved mood? So if you want to inject a bit more Christmas cheer into your friends’ or family’s lives, this is a great way to do it,” Dudley says. Top your platter with some
The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust was established in 2007 for the benefit of all Kiwis, especially children. The Trust is committed to increasing the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables for better health in all New Zealanders. We encourage all Kiwis to eat five or more servings of colourful, fresh fruit and vegetables every day for good health. Our key messages are in line with our Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation’s recommendations. The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust is funded by voluntary contributions from New Zealand’s pan produce industry. ✦ Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest @5adaynz #5adaynz

Simon Gault, one of New Zealand’s favourite chefs, has released his latest cookbook just in time for Christmas. We’ll feature a couple of his recipes each week right up until Christmas.
Pina colada mess ►1 ripe pineapple ►1 2 meringues (recipe below) ►1 quantity of Simon’s Rum (or Brandy) Sauce (recipe below) ►2 cups Kara UHT coconut cream (refrigerated for at least 2 hours — see below) ►3 pistachio nuts ►m int sprigs, to garnish
MERINGUES
► 6 egg whites ► 2 cups caster sugar ► 1 tsp vanilla essence ► 1 tsp white vinegar ► 1 tsp cornflour
Serves: 6
SIMON’S RUM (OR BRANDY) SAUCE
I
use the coconut cream that comes in UHT packets. Put it in the fridge for at least 2 hours before using; this separates the solids (which go to the top) and the water (which remains on the bottom). Scoop off the solids and this is what you whip. It takes 10–12 minutes to fully whip. This is my take on the traditional Eton mess; it sure looks a mess but, seriously, this is the most wicked flavour combination. I think it might just become your favourite summer dessert. Remove the pineapple skin and cut the flesh into bite-sized wedges. Place in a bowl. Roughly crush the meringues and add to the bowl with the pineapple and Simon’s Rum (or Brandy) Sauce. (You could add
KC14584-V2
some extra pistachios at this stage if you like.) Scoop all the solid coconut cream into a bowl and discard the coconut water. Whip the solids for approximately 12 minutes, until soft peaks form and it resembles whipped cream. Pour the pineapple-meringue mix onto a serving platter and swirl through the coconut cream. Using a microplane, grate the pistachio nuts over the top of the mess and garnish with mint sprigs.
► 1 cup cream ► 2 egg yolks ► 1 tbsp sugar ► 3 tbsp dark rum or brandy bowl of ice ► ½ cup cream, whipped to soft peaks
Preheat oven to 120°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Very gradually add in the caster sugar, continuing to beat until thick and glossy. Beat in the vanilla essence, vinegar and cornflour. Place spoonfuls of the mixture onto the prepared tray.
Bake for 45 minutes, allow to cool and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use them.
SIMON’S RUM (OR BRANDY) SAUCE In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup cream until small bubbles appear. In a separate glass bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until pale and fluffy. Pour the cream over the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Return this to the saucepan and cook over a very low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until the sauce coats the back of the spoon (or it reaches 82°C). Add the rum or brandy. Cool the pan in a bowl of ice and once chilled fold in the whipped cream. ► Extracted from Summer with Simon Gault, published by Penguin Random House NZ, RRP $50. Text © Simon Gault, 2019. Times Newspapers Christmas Supplement, Thursday, December 19, 2019 — 5
God’s got skin in the game For Christmas 2019, the Times asked Pastor Brett Jones, executive member for the East Auckland Ministers’ Association, for a personal reflection on Christmas.
I
’ve always had a fascination with words. My parents instilled in me a love of books and reading. It’s one of the things we’ve passed down to our own children, who read almost as much as they eat! There’s a beauty in words. A precision. Just the right word for the right moment. But sometimes a mystery. Words which drift in meaning over time and depending on context. I find myself endlessly fascinated with the origin of phrases. Recently, I found myself researching a phrase, “skin in the game”. It sounds dangerous before you even know what it means. And if it was inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, then dangerous would be right. In this play, Antonio stands as guarantor for a loan to his friend Bassanio and promises a pound of his own flesh as collateral, to be exacted by the lender Shylock, if Bassanio defaults on the loan. That’s having skin in the game.
When Jesus entered human history, God put skin in the game. God put himself in harm’s way. And it cost him a lot more than a pound of flesh. If you’ve put skin in the game you’ve taken risk, you’ve taken responsibility. You’ve realised that the outcome is so important, that you’ll put yourself in harm’s way to get it done. When Jesus entered human history, God put skin in the game. God put himself in harm’s way. And it cost him a lot more than a pound of flesh. The first 13 verses of John 1
paint a picture of God’s revelation of himself to humanity. And we discover the God who doesn’t merely speak creation into being, he is himself the Word that gets it all started. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made
that has been made. There’s a beauty in these words. A precision and a mystery. John reveals the life and light that flows from that moment of creation. You and I have a sense that we are not alone in the world. Creation speaks to us. Our inner lives crave a sense of connection to what is beyond us. But something is coming. Someone is coming. Someone who will bring light to everyone that we might make sense of our place in the world. God is about to invest in humanity in an unprecedented way: The Word became flesh. The Word who was God and was with God and who made everything was appearing in the flesh. God was putting skin in the game. We will never fully know the cost of that investment. We have some sense of the horror of the Easter Cross. But what about this moment, the moment of becoming flesh? Where God who is “other”, the uncreated God, joins his creation in a moment of selfemptying. That’s a lot of God to
squeeze into a tiny baby! The fully divine God becoming fully human with all of the accompanying limitations, pain and vulnerability. It’s a big deal. It’s skin in the game. God put skin in the game when he became like us. And if you’ve put skin in the game you’ve taken risk, you’ve taken responsibility. You’ve realised that the outcome is so important, that you’ll put yourself in harm’s way to get it done. So what was God so concerned about? The Word became flesh, fully human so that we might become fully human. The fullest realisation of our humanity is simply this: to know and live the reality that we are children of God. So this Christmas as we recall the birth of a child, we might reflect on who we are as children of a God, who loved us so much he put skin in the game. The East Auckland Ministers’ Association comprises more than 65 churches in the Howick Ward area and would be glad to welcome you to a Christmas service this year.

Attention partygoers ... look out for your mates this festive season
R
oad safety charity Brake is appealing to party goers and organisers to ensure everyone in their group gets to and from celebrations safely. As work Christmas parties and other celebrations are in full swing and with many people planning parties for this weekend, Brake is reminding everyone to plan their travel and, if driving to events, making sure the designated driver stays sober. Brake’s Driving for Zero campaign urges drivers not to drink any amount of alcohol or take any drugs before getting behind the wheel. The charity also urges family and friends to speak out and stop a loved one drink or drug driving. Figures show that in 2017, alcohol and/or drugs was a factor in 111 fatal and over 1100 injury crashes resulting in 130 deaths and over 1500 injuries. Research shows that drinking any amount of alcohol can affect your driving.
of confidence and means drivers are more inclined to take risks and believe they are in control when they’re not.
BRAKE’S KEY MESSAGES ON DRINK DRIVING:
If you’re driving home from celebrations, it’s vital you take your responsibility for people’s safety seriously. Caroline Perry, Brake’s New Zealand director said: “As a charity that supports people bereaved and injured in crashes, we witness the suffering that drink and drug driving inflict, and appeal to everyone to help put a stop to it. Drink and drug driving deaths and injuries are cruel and needless, ending and ruining lives and leaving behind traumatised families to pick up the pieces. “We want everyone to enjoy the
holiday season and get to their destination safely. If you’re driving home from celebrations, it’s vital you take responsibility for people’s safety seriously. It’s a fact that even small amounts of alcohol or drugs inflate your risk of crashing. Even if you feel okay after a drink, the reality is that if you get behind the wheel you’re putting yourself and others in danger. The only safe amount of alcohol to have if you’re driving is none.”
FACTS Drivers with even 20-50mg alcohol per 100ml of blood are at least three times more likely to die in a crash than those with no alcohol in their blood. This is because even small amounts of alcohol affect drivers’ reaction times, judgment and co-ordination. Alcohol also makes it impossible for drivers to assess their own impairment because it creates a false sense
• Never drink any amount of alcohol if you’re driving • Never drink if you’re driving early the next morning • Plan ahead and make sure you can get home safely by using public transport, booking a taxi/rideshare, or having a sober driver who sticks to soft drinks. • Don’t accept a lift from someone who’s been drinking. • Take responsibility for others: never buy a drink for someone who is driving, speak out to friends who plan to drink and drive, and if you’re hosting a party help your guests to plan a safe way home before the party starts.

Owairoa School student in LA at Golden Screen Awards
By FARIDA MASTER
I
t took 11-year-old Sophia Cai six auditions to bag the role in Warner Bros shark-thriller, The Meg. But never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that she would be at the JW Marriott LA Live Centre making an acceptance speech as she won the Golden Screen Awards Best Actress, in Supporting Role Award. The Owairoa School student, who has recently returned from LA, won the award for her performance as Meiying in last summer’s blockbuster The Meg that also won the Best Film Award at the 2019 Golden Screen Awards in the American/Chinese co-production section.
Sophia says the biggest challenge she faced whilst shooting for the joint venture with an international star cast led by Jason Statham, featuring Ruby Rose, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Winston Chao and NZ actor Cliff Curtis – was being a good swimmer. “It was quite scary when I had to jump off the boat in the middle of the ocean. The scene required two helicopters crashing on our boat and we had to jump into the ocean to save ourselves,” she says of the film which revolves around a prehistoric shark, Megalodon. “They have mats at the side of the boats and you are supposed to jump onto that. But I nearly fell off the side of the mat and luckily there were stunt men in the water, waiting to rescue me,”
she says. On location for four months, Sophia says that she was eightand-a-half years old when she shot the science-fiction action thriller. “I was one of the actors who was longest in the film with the main characters... since a third of the people got eaten by the shark,” she says. Having acted in a couple of commercials, TV shows and a feature film Summer Only We Know, the 11-year-old moved to New Zealand two years ago. Born to a Chinese mother and British father, Sophia says they moved to Auckland because her
dad was a bit homesick. “We also moved because of health reasons as there is no pollution here,” says the talented young actress who speaks fluent English and Mandarin. Sophia’s mum Shelly points out that acting in movies is just a job to be done for Sophia. “It’s not like she’s a star.” Her younger daughter, nineyear-old Elena, is also starring in Disney movie Mulan to be released next year; while Sophia has been signed up by Creative Artist Agency (CAA), one of the top four Hollywood talent agencies based in LA. Apart from pursuing acting,

Sophia wants to be a director/ screen-writer some day. Her mother adds, “Sophia understands that all good actresses waste a lot of their time waiting for the right role. Being an actress is based on looks which don’t last forever. She’d rather make the transition from being passive (waiting to be chosen) to active by becoming a creative person and creating opportunities for herself.”

AT: The T2 lane is working
I saw the article in the Times today (December 12) and a comment by Simeon Brown that Auckland Transport only provided vague percentages around the impacts on travel times. Below is the information that we have provided based on our data collection with clear, robust percentages, the most telling that travel times for general traffic along Pakuranga Road have only been 3 per cent slower month-on-month than prior to the T2 lane being installed and there has been a 7 per cent increase in bus patronage during peak travel times despite significant construction activity as part of Stage 1 of the Eastern Busway. This is one of the largest roading projects in Auckland and a significant amount of planning was undertaken to provide more travel options and minimise the impact on the local road network while work took place. The T2 lane, along with new express bus services and a Park and Ride service at Lloyd Elsmore Park were some of these critical measures taken to minimise the impact of construction of Stage 1 of the Eastern Busway by offering more travel choice in the areas of Panmure, Pakuranga and beyond. The data collected from our traffic monitoring programme show that the objective of minimising impacts of construction and providing more travel options to the public is being achieved. If we did not introduce measures and options such as the T2 lane, new express bus services and maintaining traffic lanes
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, December 19, 2019 — 27 Your opinion matters to us. through the construction site then there would be greater travel disruption caused by construction to the travelling public. Some key results from our traffic monitoring programme include: ■■ The impact on journey times for single occupant vehicles has been minimal since the lane was introduced. Specifically, our data shows that journey times of single occupant vehicles have been an average of 3 per cent slower monthby-month. This is a positive result given the extent of construction activity and reduced construction related speed limits on the local road network. ■■ AT have seen improvements to bus journey times and increased bus patronage of 7 per cent during peak travel times since construction started. The new 728 and 729 express services that have been introduced to support the T2 / Buslane are the largest contributors to the increase. ■■ AT have also been reviewing journey times across the wider east Auckland area, including Waipuna Bridge and Lagoon Drive and there has been very little impact on journey times for single-occupancy vehicles or public transport as a result of construction of Stage 1. For October, journey times for the wider network have been 4 per cent slower than prior to construction. Again, a positive result given the amount of construction activity on the road network in the area. ■■ Our observations have been that multi-occupant vehicles and buses using the T2 lane have experienced faster journey times.

Lions send supplies to Samoa The local Lions District has flown $9500 worth of emergency supplies to Samoa to help with the measles outbreak up there. Christine Ford from the Lions Club of Bucklands Beach co-ordinated the project.
■■ Traffic has been able to merge and turn in / out of side streets safely and efficiently Stage 1 of the project remains on schedule for completion in 2021. We have seen some positive behaviour change over the past few months with more people shifting to public transport and making changes to their journeys and we thank the people of East Auckland for this cooperation and patience. The $1.4b AMETI Eastern Busway will bring rapid transit travel options to one of Auckland’s fastest growing areas with a congestionfree, high frequency, busway that will carry more than 7500 passengers during peak hours between new stations in Botany, Pakuranga, Panmure and onwards to other parts of the region. When com-

It was also indicated that consultation on the Reeves Road Flyover will take place early next year. The response referred to in the article actually stated that we will have a clearer view of the timeline for construction of various elements of future Eastern Busway stages, including the flyover, early next year.

Third set of lights is crazy
I would like to congratulate the unimaginative and ideologically blind planners at Auckland Transport (AT) for putting a set of traffic
lights outside the bus terminal on Ti Rakau Drive. There are now three sets of lights in a row within about 100m and a forth that exits from Greenmount Drive on to Ti Rakau at the middle set of lights. The already-bad rush hour traffic has been magnified immensely. It has added 20-odd minutes to my journey and I suspect thousands of others have been greatly inconvenienced as well. AT does not care. Their ideology makes them deliberately deaf, dumb and blind. There were other alternatives than just throwing in another set of lights. However that would mean putting a little thought into things, something AT seems incapable of. To add insult to injury, there have been many occasions when no vehicles have been entering or leaving yet the lights have changed to red. Go figure. Today, even though the lights were green, a bus turning left into the terminal could not pull in fully as another bus which had just gone in could not move forward either. This meant that even though the new lights were green, only one lane could be used. This was a usual occurrence before the lights and is an even greater aggravation now. Well done AT, you have really outdone yourself this time. I see that Facebook is alive with annoyed commuters over this ridiculous situation. May I suggest, instead of bleating on Facebook, send your messages directly to AT and Auckland council.

Celebrating 70 years of marriage Long-time Pakuranga residents Owen & Margaret White recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Originally from Wellington, Owen (96) and Margaret (93) moved to Auckland in 1981 and have been residents at the Pakuranga Park Village for the last 16 years. They met on a blind date and within two years married on December 3,1949. Owen enjoyed his career as an electrical engineer and Margaret

Re “Sex assaults at school” in Howick and Pakuranga Times on December 12. The ridiculous headline as above is sleazy reporting at its worst. The Board of Trustees (at Shelly Park School) and the school principal have updated the parents at all times. The complainant also contacted the police and then the (Independent) Police Conduct Authority and Oranga Tamariki and the Min-
as a clerical/secretary. When asked the secret formula for a long-lasting marriage, they both replied that their backgrounds were similar and that they appreciated each other’s talents. The couple, their daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons enjoyed a restaurant lunch in Cockle Bay on Sunday and an afternoon tea with friends at the Pakuranga Park Village on the following Tuesday which was their actual anniversary day. istry of Education. All found that the school had handled the matter well and there was no further action needed. The complainant has also used social media to vent and denigrate the school principal and board chair so all and sundry can now know who it is and therefore the young child’s name. I believe there should be a prompt apology from the editor of the HP Times to the hard-working caring school staff and Board of Trustees for seeming to denigrate their excellent work.
serious assessment. The parent to whom we spoke strong believes neither the school nor the police (and other authorities) have handled the situation adequately. That’s a bona fide news story. There’ll be no apology for reporting on such an awful matter.

New visitor a real tweet-heart Last week a lovely little cockatiel landed on the shoulder of Edgewater Village’s Maintenance Manager and hasn’t left! Since her arrival she has landed the highly sought after role of ‘Wellbeing Officer’ for both residents and staff, who are loving getting to know their new feathery
friend and describe her as very “chirpy”. As you can see by the photos, she is very busy! Some of her tasks include helping the admin staff and sitting on the shoulders of other staff members throughout the day – offering her wellbeing tips. The bird is yet to be named; maybe our readers can help with suggestions? ■■ E-mail your ideas to jim@times.co.nz
Classy decade for craft market I am privileged to have been involved with the iconic Classy Crafts Market for up to 10 years. I salute the volunteers and helpers at the market, also the many crafters who excel in their specialist craft products, the key element of the market being buy NZ made and shop local. Times change, I’m sure these crafters, many being local, will be around Howick Village for years to come. Well done Classy Crafts.

Howick’s indoor Classy Crafts market to close Classy Crafts, Howick’s indoor market, is to close. For almost 10 years, Classy Crafts has opened its doors on Saturdays at All Saints Community Hall in Cook Street. Classy Crafts will be opening the doors for the last time this Saturday from 9am-1pm but will not be re-opening in 2020.
Initiator and convenor of Classy Crafts, Ruth Hammond, acknowledges the long-term support of Margaret Sexton who has used her considerable skills in marketing and promotion and assisted new stall holders with the presentation of their products. “I would like to thank Margaret, and our team of volunteers who had a
vital part to play and were always there to support the smooth running of the market,” said Ruth. “Additionally, I would like to say a big thankyou to the people of Howick and surrounds for their support. It has been an absolute joy to meet so many lovely people.” There will be tears and many hugs exchanged between the
Classy Crafters after 1pm when the market closes for the last time. “Take the opportunity to purchase some last minute Christmas shopping and to pop in and say goodbye to your favourite stall holders and obtain their business cards,” said Ruth. Desirable Christmas raffles will be drawn on the day.

Peter Snell as fast off the track as on Agnew’s Angle
Howick’s Kieran Anstis has announced he will work with top Christchurch-based driver Dylan Thomson for his 2020 New Zealand Kieran Anstis Rally Championship. Thomson has worked with partner Amy Hudson since making his rallying debut in 2016 but Hudson purchased a rally car of her own. Anstis comes well credentialled as a graduate of both Motorsport New Zealand’s Elite Academy and Rally New Zealand’s co-drivers’ academy. He also sitting alongside some of New Zealand’s top rally drivers, including an NZRC podium at the final round of the 2019 season, Rally Waitomo. “Amy started talking about taking a year off earlier this season when she bought herself a rally car and it’s nearly ready to run so we both figured it’s as good a time as any,” says Thomson. “The opportunity to work with Kieran came up and I think we’ll make a good combination, we’ve both got similar ambitions and expectations for 2020 and moving further forward.” Anstis says they are both chasing similar goals and targets. “I’m really looking forward to working with him and the team next year.” After a season learning the four-wheel drive, Specialised Auto Services Subaru netted third overall.
T
hree Olympic and two Commonwealth gold medals and world records for the 800m, half-mile and mile made Peter Snell our greatest track athlete. His recent death in Dallas, Texas, age 80, leaves a nation to mourn a humble Kiwi who had the world at his feet. He was the greatest of inspirational athletic coach Arthur Lydiard’s large stable of middle and long distance champions. Snell was just 21 when he won gold over 800m at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Within the hour Murray Halberg won the 5000m with a typical gutsy run. Snell beat great rival George Kerr to win the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games halfmile before completing the mile double and added the 800m-1500m double at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He also broke the world mile record of Australia’s unbeaten Herb Elliott in Wanganui with a 3m 54.4s run and added the world 800m and half-mile records at Christchurch’s Lancaster Park.

Both those performances were on grass, not the faster allweather synthetic tracks. I first met Peter in Greymouth in the early 1960s where he won a half-mile and later attended a dance at the St John’s Hall. Later that night he came up to me and asked, “What are doing after the dance, Ivan?” “I’m thinking of taking that girl home,” I said indicating a tall, pretty girl in a tartan dress with whom I had danced.
“Nah,” said Peter. “A few of us are going to the Albion pub for a few drinks. Why don’t you join us?” Those were the days of six o’clock closing but West Coasters were notorious for ignoring liquor licensing laws. I wandered alone to the Albion, later renamed Kings after owner and former All Black captain Ron King, and met a group of athletes but no Snell. Eventually he wandered into the bar about an hour later. “Where’ve you been Peter?” I asked. “I just walked home the girl in the tartan dress,” he said. Not surprisingly Steve Hansen has endorsed the selection of Ian Foster to fill the vacancy he left as head coach of the All Blacks. Loyalty has been a major part of Hansen’s incredible success and was shown by the big brass in staying loyal to Graham Henry after the 2007 Rugby World Cup disaster when the All Blacks performed poorly in losing their quarter-final to France in Cardiff. That loyalty was rewarded
when the All Blacks beat the same team by just one point in the 2011 final to allow Henry to retire a winner. Hansen’s record since has been phenomenal. His biggest disappointments was the 2007 World Cup, when he was an assistant to Henry and the controversial drawn home series against the 2017 British Lions and Ireland. In the first the referee missed a forward pass from which France scored. However that couldn’t excuse a poor All Blacks performance. As a long time assistant, Foster has also enjoyed a great run and is, as Hansen verifies, a much better coach today than when he struggled with the Chiefs in Super 12 before new Australian coach Dave Rennie won them two titles. However my biggest fear is that a major rugby playing nation will snare brilliant Crusaders coach Scott Robertson whose three consecutive Super titles were not considered good enough for the All Blacks job. ■■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
